Review Tokoyo Japanese Restaurant & Sake Bar - Albany

june ranyard
We hadn't been here for over 6 years due to moving locations. Being back in Albany we came to Tokyo for dinner. So pleased we did. The food was absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. We ate do much more than normal only to have all the lovely food. The young man doing the service told us it was the same chef over all this time. It feels authentic. Friendly staff, great food at a fair price. They also do sushi to takeaway. Try Tokyo in Albany. I don't think you will be disappointed.

We came to this restaurant by coincidence and it was a lovely place. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The food was delicious, we ordered Chicken ramen it was tasty and full of flavor . Karage chicken was delicious šŸ¤¤, the best for me is the prawns & veg. tempura I will have it next time. Bento box was very good and tasty, the portion was very good and rich in flavor. Highly recommend this restaurant

Love this place! I go there to grab some sushi for lunch a few times a week. Great quality, fresh and affordable. Service is always amazing! Highly recommend! They even offer 20% off sushi after 2.30 pm.

Love going there, now easily the very best Japanese food restaurant I have been to in Auckland & we have been to a few. It's one of those gems that make you want to return ,work your way through the menu & try new things. service , price & portion size are great, you will Not leave hungry or disappointed .

Returned again and really enjoyed! Will return :)šŸ˜€ {Last visit-Previously have really enjoyed coming here. Tonight was a major disappointment unfortunately. Warm food. Warm water. Warm green tea. Luke warm service. Not what we have come to expect from our previously very enjoyable visits. Likely to try again hoping that it was just an off night tonight.}

When you look at the price for two people at a cafe, coffee, cold drink, & a meal, being between $50 - $70, then this place is well on track for value for money. 3rd or 4th time here, ordered 3 entrees, 2 wines, 2 fizzys, 3 mains, $66 for the whole lot, and not small portions. Price is ā€˜veryā€™ good for what you are getting. Lovely hard working staff, always running around keeping on top of everything. Food is top notch for a small north shore outlet I wouldnā€™t have expected inner city nighttime restaurant standards in the first place. Perfect place for an an alternative lunch to all the regurgitated generic meals across the cafe industry. Awesome atmosphere, comfortable, welcoming. Food comes out promptly & is hot. Didnā€™t notice a toilet, but there is plenty of parking. Easy access for accessible needs. Definitely worth changing up lunch & coming here. Have not tried it for dinners. Cheers, see you again.

Requested for no rice Pork Katsu. Quality was good. Service was great!!

The best Japanese cuisine we have ever had. Beautiful food, great atmosphere, we had a little wait but they accommodated us with extra food. Friendly staff. Reasonably priced too. Will we definitely be back!

Great plum wine, yummy food. I guess that staff is nice: not much emotions spilled by their Asian waiters... Would be even better having cushions on the rock-hard chairs, and playing some nice japanese tunes.

Very welcoming stuff I love their service and the food is always fresh and delicious. After 3pm they run 20% off for the sushi menu šŸ˜

Lovely meals at a Tokyo restaurant. Very fresh salmon sashimi and a bento box. Kids friendly and the meals are always a high standard with fresh ingredients. It is very clean. Highly recommend Tokyo for a lovely lunch and dinner out.

We go here sporadically and always have a nice meal. The beef tataki is far too large and indelicate. The sashimi is always lovely though. The service is always super fast and friendly.

This place is my favourite Japanese place, but I would really love it if they bothered to offer more at dinner, especially their ramen. Their ramen is better quality than browns bay, I don't understand why they would just offer it at lunch. Please fix this Tokyo! You are missing a large group of people who love ramen. You could get more customers if you realised this and did something about it. Most people aren't in the area at lunchtime. Please fix this! Amazing food but needs to do a bit more for their customers to really exceed and be popular :) Also do uber eats. Uber eats, and ramen. Thanks

very bad service! <br/>1. No water provided as entering<br/>2. No spoon provided with soup<br/>3. No plate provided<br/>4. Bones in the sashimi

Very nice food, good vegetarian option, attention for details

Great bento boxes and sashimi platter. All presented so well and very yum!

Came here for a late lunch on a stormy spring day. Was a lovely little place to escape the weather and the decor was sweet yet a little outdated, as was the presentation. This is not necessarily a bad thing though and I think it adds to the charm.<br/><br/>The menu had a good selection and between two of us we ordered miso soup, garden salad, salmon sashimi, vegetable tempura, made to order roll sushi and canned drinks. The food was nice, honestly I cannot really fault it at all however it was nothing special considering it came to around $35 each and we didnā€™t exactly leave feeling full.

We have been here a few times but the last two times (including tonight), there was a shortage of workers and a huge crowd. There was an obvious delay in food and service.Ā <br/>Main reason for my low rating is that, I feel there needs to be some learning around hygiene as the waiter served water for three of us with his fingers in the glass and probably in our water, instead of bringing it with a tray (which I saw him do with other patrons).Ā <br/>I asked for a change of water and he huffed away as though I was wrong to ask for clean water. I am quite disappointed and feel bad about the whole experience; 1) having to point out the unhygienic manner of serving, 2) to have feel bad for having to do 1. Just a bad feeling for dinner. Sad because we used to go there quite often.

We have been here several times. Have always enjoyed it hence coming back for a birthday dinner.<br/>Unfortunately the food was not up to par of the other visits.<br/>Clearly the waiter was sick as he was constantly coughing and rubbing his nose on his sleeve.<br/>It was hard not to just walk out.<br/>Paying cash they were unable to give full amount of change due to no float.<br/>

It was a quiet night so we got seated and our orders taken very quickly. Food was alright and came out after 10-15 minutes. Would go back if we were in the area and were craving Japanese. Little pricey for the portions.

Had an amazing dinner at Tokyo. I ordered chicken misoyaki main and my friend ordered salmon dinner box. We thought both were delicious. I want to come again next time and try out more foods in the menu.
Jasmine N
Came here for dinner with friend few days ago. We ordered teriyaki chicken box and teriyaki beef box each box comes with so big portion that is more than enough for two people. Service is excellent. Highly recommend this restaurantā˜ŗļø

Came here for a quick late night dinner and ordered the Katsu Chicken Curry. Food itself was average, nothing outstanding. Paid $21 for a sub-par meal, way too over priced for what you get. They really need to look at the other Japanese restaurants that do well. Donā€™t think I will be returning anytime soon. Service? Below averagešŸ˜
Vika
Went to try yakisoba. Small portion but quite expensive price and the taste was not even average. Total waste of my time and money. Do not go there again
Grace
Average Japanese Restaurant, Pricing is standard and portions are a little disappointing. The food itself wasn't bad but everything was just extremely small.Ā  Service was not great, did not even give us water to drink. Ordered the Katsu Chicken and sushi set which was $14 pricey for what you get, would be better if you just went to the mall for sushi, to be honest.

<br/>I went to Tokyo a couple of weeks ago with an old work mate and was impressed with the food, so we went there for lunch today. The place is a bit of a Rosedale institution as it has been there for many years. We chose the Tempura box and the Chicken Katsu Don. The Chicken Katsu is the best that we have had and we have had many. The Tempura box (of mixed prawn and vegetable tempura) included the standard rice, sushi, gyoza, and salad, with a few little tasty extras - this was also very good. Both meals of course included a bowl of miso soup. The serving of the Kirin beer in a frosted glass is a lovely touch, and the beer was ice cold and refreshing. The service was very efficient and professional, and the food was delivered very rapidly. Overall very good food at a very reasonable price.

Awful tasteless chicken lumped on top of salad and forgot to include the miso! Total rip off for the expensive price. Won't be ordering from them again.
Ryan
It was so delicious. I recommend the theriyaki chicken dinner box. I really enjoyed the experience at Tokyo japanese restaurant. Will be returning again

I really like Tokyo. Food is amazing, well presented, the staff are okay... The only downside of Tokyo is that's it's always empty! It's amazing and nobody is in there, just feels like a desert. Needs more exposure for the quality of it.

I frequently have lunch here. The food is simple, nicely presented and tasty. Staff are friendly, thoughtful and always make me feel welcome.<br/>I like this place.

Used to enjoy this restaurant very much used to be high quality food and reasonable price kind staff wow factors<br/>But now this place in trouble $15 lunch box with horrible quality and staff never seem happy

We stumbled upon this place when the nearby Japanese restaurant was closed for renovations. I ordered the Tokyo Special Tempura with extra rice. There was a lot but it was $25. I really liked it. The service was ok

I love this place. The food is amazing and well priced. The staff are lovely and we go there so much they remember our order now which is awesome. I have nothing bad to say about Tokyo at all. I always get the Teriyaki dinner box and it's fresh to death. I always feel satisfied afterwards. Definitely the best Jap I've had.

Went there for lunch had the unagi and sushi lunch set ... food is very bland ... there's not a lot of it either very low quality meal . Another Chinese group trying to do Japanese food and struggling . Staff are pleasant but it's just not great food .
Ray Jay
Not a great experience here the food was pretty average and my friend ordered ramen with extra pork which cost $19 and the pork came out a bit rubbery , the teriyaki chicken was $15 and it was full of rice and not a lot of chicken with a plain flavor , other than that the staff were nice and the decor is your expected Japanese style. I recommend if you were to come here for lunch to make a booking as it gets quite busy. Expect a wait for the food and not everyone to get it at the same time.

Due to good review we decided to visit on dads birthday<br/>Interior was simple and sophisticated<br/>Good location right by the beach<br/>Great service<br/>However very average food !<br/>Hefty pricetag for the quality of food<br/>We spent 220 for 4 people and the sashimi was not that fresh and the foods were all very ordinary and a little salty<br/>Best thing i had tonight were their king prawn tempura<br/>If i had 220 to spend again at a japanese restaurant unfortunately it wont be here :(<br/>Ordered their 45 dessert platter as a suprise and that was amazing tho ! Thank you very very much for that<br/>Writing beautifully written-highlights were the tiramisu and milk pudding, rest were very average

I would have given this place 5 stars but had to take major points off because of the super long wait. We had to wait an hour before our food came. (And I ordered a Salmon teriyaki, nothing too fancy). But in fairness, the chef gave us complimentary appetizers due to long wait (though it just wasn't enough. Maybe sushi would have been a better choice?) And no, the place was not packed. Besides us, there were probably 3 other small groups.<br/><br/>I said sushi would have been a better choice as a "sorry for the long wait" food because we were starving! We thought since it wasnt packed, wait wouldnt be too long ... and spring rolls plus those spicy dumpling-like food wouldnt be enough for 5 people, really.<br/><br/>Now, the food. Everything was amazing except in this case, the salmon teriyaki lol. I wished I ordered my friends' ones because it was really yummy!! (I highly recommend tofu main meal and honey chicken).<br/>I'd say pass on the salmon cause it's very bland and it's just not worth the wait. Ummm as for the serving, the rice is soooooo small. It wasnt even a full cup. Probably 1/3 cup if you compress it down. I would ask or complain about their serving size if I had the guts or just pay $2 more if I'm rich. Oh and the miso soup is the bomb! Quite a different taste compared to other japanese restaurants I've been to.<br/><br/>I know this has been a very long review but if you had all the time in the world and like to chit chat while you wait for the food (for like an hour) then go ahead, eat here because the food is good! <br/><br/>I'll ~probably~ come back but with the long wait and expensive price ...... Maybe not any time soon. <br/>

One of my favourite Japanese restaurants. Service is always good and food is so fresh! Only downside is that it is quite expensive for what you get. Still really recommend as is light and fresh

I been their loyal customer for the past 7 years .. And every time I went only for the Tokyo box .. their food Not good as before, and the portion seem to be smaller .. I noticed the staffs change over at first i thought food should be still great ... But after I went few times I noticed my favorite chicken teriyaki the soy sauce taste different ... Previously the box include also sashimi now is gone .. No more radish ..and the even the sushi taste so so .. Honestly bit disappointed ... They can be better :s

Good food by Korean owners and staff. A bit expensive to be honest. But still giving 4 stars as we were satisfied with the food, service, and overall experience.

Visited this lovely little place for lunch and left as a very happy customer. The misoyake chicken was good & really enjoyed the beautiful flavours. It comes with a good portion size for the price so well worth it. I had the Misoyake chicken and sushi set which was more than enough for lunch and a very satisfying meal. <br/><br/>The place is tastefully decorated and the staff are very friendly and you get service with a smile. Highly recommended. <br/>

This is my once a week lunch place. Good Japanese food and beautiful tempura. Service is prompt and always with a smile. Portions good, food tasty and service above average. Highly recommended.

Took a Japanese student here for lunch - very good, friendly service, nice and clean, very relaxing environment.<br/><br/>Food was great and very reasonably priced.<br/><br/>The student I took along said that it would be very popular if it was located in Japan, that makes for a great recommendation as far as I am concerned.<br/><br/>Will definitely be back and look forward to trying them for dinner.

I really love this place. After having beef tataki here me and my partner visit this restaurant for dinner at least twice a month. My partner loves salmon misoyaki. Always ask for the extra sauce. She usually does not eat spicy food but this misoyaki sauce is just right for her. Staff are always friendly to us.

Great food and fast service!

Favourite Japanese restaurant on the Shore! Staff are friendly and very accommodating with any changes you require to any of the dishes. The 15$ lunchbox is a great deal and you get a lot for the small price! Would also recommend the Teriyaki Beef &amp; Misoyaki Chicken. Have been dining here for years and we are always happy to visit Tokyo's for lunch or dinner.

After trying this place out a couple of times in the past few months my partner &amp; I have started to go there at least once a week for lunch. With Japanese being our favourite cuisine we have been to almost every Japanese restaurant and takeaway on the shore! No doubt about it Tokyo is the best out of all the Japanese places on the North Shore! The Tokyo lunch box that they have is great value for money, its only about $15 and we struggle to finish it. My girlfriend is really fussy and the staff always accommodate for us, by offering to swap the raw fish &amp; sushi with extra chicken, salad &amp; tempura! I'm not fussy but prefer salmon over tuna and they have no problems in giving me extra salmon instead! If I didn't work night shifts i would love to try out their dinner menu, <br/>Try this place out, I guarantee you will love it!
Jonjon
I am vegetarian and most of the japanese restaurants I've been to only do fried stuff or tofu.<br/><br/>But here they did fried vegetables and I thought it was quite nice and they had vegetarian dumplings too. <br/><br/>I liked the atmosphere although it can be a bit dark, but the staff there was really nice and I enjoyed the experience
Frank Marinthe
I have been having lunch once a month at Tokyo for the last 5 years and it has always been perfect. Super reasonable prices and great food. I highly recommend the simple Tokyo lunchbox at lunchtime and the diner menu is really excellent, a bit more pricy as you would expect but more sophisticated, truly great!
Jessica Bell
Have been here many times over the past couple years and they never disappoint! Our favourites are the agedashi tofu and veggie gyoza, yum yum! The service is always friendly and efficient. Don't forget to order a teapot of hot sake!
Jacqui
Try the Beef Tataki. Yummy!
