Review Hak Ka Hut - Albany

One of the best places to have cray fish, not because of the price but their experience in cooking them. We had them in sashimi and with yee mee noodles. At $260/kg you dont want anyone to mess up!

Have been here several times. Just back for lunch 3 days ago. We still like their dim sum. The quality was consistent with a good portion. Seating was comfortable and service was friendly. If you are around the area and looking for yum cha, I recommend you to try this place. I think you will not be disappointed. 25 March 2022 Came back for dinner recently. The food was just as tasty. The quality remain consistent. Will be back.

Delicious food!!! Specially Beijing duck with pancakes, steam fish, BBQ lamb ribs, fried Tofu. Dessert tofu.... So awesome. Real canton Kejia style

Went on a Saturday for Yum Cha. Food was great. It took us a while to get served but eventually a lady came round to serve us. She gave us a pen to tick what we wanted on the menu. The food came out really quickly and probably took less than 10 mins. We got 6 different things and total was $48.

Have been here before Covid-19. It's good to be back as there was no queue. Food still appetizing as ever and service was quick and attentive. We'll be back again.

All dishes taste nice, but especially the yum char dishes. Very large variety and all tasted fresh. Service was lightning quick for the yum char, and staff were all very friendly. Well worth coming back to.

We had a yum cha meal with friends who knew the menu well and ordered a lovely variety of dishes. Everything we had was really well made and delicious. The egg tarts were amazing. The stand out for me was the pork Siu Mai.
Jason Lau
One of my favorite yum char places because the owners and workers are very friendly. Food is good and price is reasonable. Very hard working owners. đŸ’Ș

Hak Ka Hut is an excellent restaurant. I went with my family and was impressed. Well worth your time for an authentic Chinese banquet. Even better if one or more of your party knows the delights of Chinese cuisine.
Ronald Romano
Good experience. Would need upgrades.

Tasty food with fair pricing. Can be a bit crowded at times so be sure to call to make reservation first. Will come back again and again... Below shows pecking duck and eggplant
Too Hard
Currently serving the best Chinese food on the north shore, it's a BYO and the staff have limited English but the foods second to none

It's not in the photo but we loved the beef ribs!! The peppery taste was very nice. The chicken feet were a bit dry compared to other yumcha restaurants'. It's very full and busy so we couldn't get what we wanted as things would run out quickly.

Decent Yum Cha lunch however the rude, abrupt and unfriendly service spoils this place. Customers provide money to your business - why would you not treat them with politeness ? - i dont understand and will not be returning because of this.
Daisy Pun
The service is poor especially the lady boss.

My favourite yum cha on the shore. I've lost count of how many times I have come here. I can confidently say their dishes are consistent and always fresh. Their fried chicken wings are also to die for. It gets PACKED during peak hours, you are warned.

this traditional dim sum place expand their restaurant. after Beihaiyucun closed, they became the only one in Albany area.
seafood is good in dinner time. lunch is crowded. but food inproved a lot, got much more options.
don't like their service, but like their food there, we dont have many choices, right

Come here for yumcha as usual but have terrible experience this time. Food was average and service is not good at all. In the start we order the tea and they gave some other type of tea, asked for few times and the feedback is they are not wrong, nothing for changing. Not coming back again.

Googled it. Went within googled time, entered through the opened door which appeared to be a furniture store room. A lady was sleeping on a bench seat, we entered a back room and 3 men were playing cards, what you want? They said, I asked if they were open and they replied next door. We went next door and were told closed. False advertising and abrupt/rude manner of dealing with people.

I loved their yum cha. Would definitley recommend and would love to visit again. Their prawn spring rolls were amazing. Also loved their Custard pineapple baked buns!

I had dined in at this place several times and we always had waited for an available table because in all of those occasions the place is packed with customers, they even had tables outside the premises in front of other businesses, this is how popular this place is. Tucked at the end of William Pickering Drive, this place is not hard to find, it’s easily accessible especially for those who work in Albany. We usually dine in here on Sundays just after mass as it’s on the way home and this is what we had on our most recent visit.

Roast duck was really really impressive when it came freshly straightly out of the oven. Beaten most of roast ducks in Auckland Chinese restaurant. I also liked their egg tarts, BBQ pork cakes and fried daikon cake. What else, beef with bone was extremely yum.

Decor and dining ambiance was not very good. So don't expect a quite and orderly place to Yum cha. You need to grasp the chance and yell out to staff, I want that one! Mine! Or the last one crispy roast duck will lie on the table of someone else.

This is the BEST yum Cha place in Auckland. The portions are big & prices are good. The prawn dim sum is amazing here - the prawn pieces are massive & juicy. I’ve been coming here for the past 5 years & the prices & portion has remained similar. the customer service is pretty bad and most the staff can’t speak English but the food makes up for it đŸ€©đŸ„°đŸ˜

Really love the prawn dumplings and it’s the reason why we keep coming back! Service could probably improve specially if you are seated next door and away from the main restaurant.
Asianfoodie
A close yum cha place that I frequently go to. They have really nice dumplings and staff members are really friendly. I took a while to choose what I wanted but they patiently waited and explained about the food when I asked. Would recommend :)

Come here for yumcha and the occasional family dinner. I'd recommend this place if you want some Chinese food on the North Shore. It's your typical Chinese restaurant experience
FoodieBeast
Quite a regular at this place. Not bad, good food, ok price. Good for yam cha. Service can be a struggle as not many wair staff speak English.

Reasonable priced and authentic yumcha~ Love it~ Although, the piggy bun is not runny as it should be... The other downside is that the place is tiny, and if you going there in the weekend you will have to wait for a long time...

The perfect lobster for the perfect dinner.

Service: 7/10
Don’t walk into a chinese restaurant expecting impeccable service.
The owners actually gifted us some desserts and appetisers. They are also quite friendly and like to communicate with the customers.
The food here always comes out at a reasonable pace so you never get hungry waiting.

Food: 8/10
They probably have some of the most delicious and fresh lobsters in the North Shore. The meat was tender and the noodles were chewy.
The sweet sour pork had a crunchy outside and the sauce wasn’t too strong.
The eggplant wasn’t as tender and soft as I wanted it, it should’ve been cooked for longer.
The shrimp balls were super crispy and light.
The vegetable dish contrasted the heaviness of the other dishes so it didn’t feel too greasy.

Ambiance: 6/10
The restaurant tends to get extremely stuffy and uncomfortable at dinner times, because there just isn’t enough space.
The tables are always clean and tidy with new table clothes.
The lobsters and seafood are on display so you can see that they are actually fresh.
From the outside it’s not really that noticeable that’s it’s a chinese restaurant except for the chinese sign.

This is definitely one of the best places for lobster but not ALL of their dishes are superb.

Solid yum cha option in Albany. We used to have another favourite close by which has now closed â˜č they put extra tables outside on the weekend when other businesses close so they can get the crowd through quicker. Yum squid, and all the dumplings! Really cute themed dumplings too (animals and festive seasons).
Amy Chen
For a busy place this was very unorganised. There was no number system to get a table, the customers just pushed in front and the owner did nothing to prevent this. The ones that wait patiently simply just could not get a table. Food was average and not worth the poor service.

Been here twice, first time was a long time ago for yum Cha and it was a all right experience. Kind of take it or leave it.

Years later, my parents recommend this place to us for dinner and we decided to give it some go. Once again, take it or leave it experience. It was a very busy Saturday night, the place was packed. Lucky we made a booking. After squeezing through then over crowded tiny space we were arrived at our table. In my opinion there were way too many tables for the tiny space.

Service was good, friendly and helpful. The owners were very helpful in their recommendations of dishes and very attentive.

Highlight was their roast pork! Beautifully presented with amazing colours. The meat is juicy and melt in your mouth while the crakling was nice a crispy. Delicious!! Weered Hak Ka tofu-- a bit disappointed as it tastes white blend and lack of sauce. The home made tofu was nice though. The soy sauce fish fillet was good and love the broccolis that came with it. For keen fried rice was average, lack of flavours. The Gai lan with ginger was nice but cut too chuncky. The complimentary soup as starter was yummy and the fruit in the end was a nice refreshing touch.

If you are in the area and wanting some hearty Cantonese food then this is a good option, make sure you make a booking. But since we live on the other side of town, not sure if it will be worth a trip out just for that.
Bright One
We have been to there for Yum Cha for a few years now. It's always quite good in terms of the cheap price with a wide variety of choice. However we felt the standard of Yum Cha has dropped dramatically since a few months ago. I'm not sure if they have changed the chef recently. It’s really disappointing to see an establishment we loved so much not live up to its expectations anymore.
Angela Hollinger
Sat outside and seems the food was only being served to people inside. Then moved inside and still nobody came near. A couple at the next table also not getting served. Don’t know whether they were short staffed or couldn’t be bothered. Had to ask for some food, which when we did get it was cold. Told the waiter who then proceeded to microwave it. Not impressed as my friend is going through chemotherapy so reheated seafood not a good idea. Won’t be back.

Good to go early in the morning. staff will allow to order for your own. but very crowd after 11:00. you will only see vegetables if you sit outside
Chun Zhang
Eaten here few times. They have wide variety of dishes. From sashimi (salmon, baby lobsters) to traditional Chinese food. Good quality food. Price is above average.
Duke_meko
Wanted to try out their yum cha as I had heard good things but was overall disappointed. The food was generally tasty but not well prepared. The yellow tripe was not washed properly and the dumplings had been over steamed or were not fresh so the skin was stuck to the paper. The service was the worst part. We tried to order dishes (as there was not enough food for 3 people coming out) and one guy just told us no, shook his head and said no. Despite other tables placing orders. The second said later. The third took our order and we never got it. I saw a woman ask for takeaway containers 4 times before finally being told to get it herself. Our empty dishes were cleared once only. There either needs to be more staff or they need better training.
Jade Lin
Average food but hey it’s the closest yum cha place from our home. So when we crave yum cha and cbb driving too far then oh well. Service depend on how busy they are really. But usually ok la
Lucykim0626
Food was average but you cannot expect much of ambiance and quality of services. Too noisy inside the restaurant. Good to have serving staff who can speak English.
Alex Zhao
best Chinese yum cha restaurant you can find auckland. They are always busy becasue of their great taste.
Prawn dumplings and BBQ meats are great.

I popped by to have a snack with my mum. Horrible customer service and i dont think i will go again. Its more about the mood and the pleasing atmosphere that makes people come but this place I would personally say was not the "place to go". However, the foods were average.

My favourite Yum Cha in town. But always crowded, we need wait for the table. Great food, heaps of varieties. Love the siomai, crablets and pork bun. Actually i live everything :)

Went here for Yum Cha on sunday - so busy we almost had to physically fight for the table we booked ( I seriously recommend booking!). They aren't amazing at Xiao long bao or the rice paper dumplings ( prawns and chives) or the custard tarts, but their chicken feet were amazing - plump and juicy, nice rice rolls with youtiao and rice rolls with Bbq pork, great daikon / turnip cakes, decent Bbq pork buns and shu mai. Service was half good, ambience not great, I suggest trying to get a seat outside if it's decent weather so it feels less stressed during your meal. I'd recommend this place :)

Came to Hakka Hut last week and our experience was actually pretty good. We ordered their combination BBQ platter (roast pork with crackling, roast duck, barbecued pork), sizzling beef ribs and chicken cashew. We were first served with a bowl of soup each before the main comes. Their BBQ platter was good and reasonable size for the price, sizzling beef was yum, chicken cashew was alright bit still good. We were also served a bowl of white tofu with sugar as dessert which I lovee. Will come back to try more of their dishes.

Came here today for yum char. Service was casual, walk in and look around and tables of 4-6 people. Slow service at start.
Food was on trays and not trolleys only because it is a small place.
Pork ribs were done beautifully and meaty, pork shumai was not oily at all. Har gow (prawn steam dumpling) was fresh prawn and rice roll pastry was yum.
Was different and small place but if I am going to Albany I would go there for lunch as North Sea has CLOSED.
Reasonable prices too.

Last time I ate here was two years ago so a lot may have changed. When I ate here all the food was fresh and delicious - probably my favourite yumcha place for food alone. It was also one of the cheapest yumcha places around and offered great variety. They also have a good range of teas available and don't charge you extra for different teas. The service can be a bit patchy at times especially during busy times so be prepared to get your own sauces and it is best to arrive earlier than the busy lunch hour or make a booking. Must try's are the siumai, prawn dumplings, chicken feet and prawn toast. Some other delicious items include the omasum, rice rolls, xianshui jiao, deep fried squid, egg tarts, taro pudding which almost has a creme brûlée surface, tofu sheet wrapped meat, deep fried prawn wonton, and bbq pork buns depending on your taste preferences. Some of my favourites are the sweet refreshing steamed rice cake and deep fried prawn wontons. There is indoor seating and outdoor seating on clear days. The inside can sometimes get quite cramped.

I've been here for yum cha and dinner, and while I can't remember any stand out dishes I do remember having a good experience each time I went.

Flavourful food for decent prices. Good service, but it can get busy at times. It's a good restaurant to have up your sleeve if you frequent the Albany area.
Jack
Flavours very authentic. Service is quick and efficient. Very limited seating capacity. Suggest takeaway as it can get quite busy during dinner time.
Kishore Mitra
Went there at lunch time and there were plenty of space. Not a lot of variety (food) to go around but they were quite frequent with the same stuff. The taste wasnt incredible either. Very reasonable pricing though. Overall, okay but not the best yum cha experience in Auckland by a country mile....
Haden
The service here is actually offensively bad so I simply won't be returning. I don't expect silver spoon service but treating people like humans isn't that hard right?
Nathalie
Dined here Saturday lunch very busy luckily we booked. The place is super crowded and very hard to move around. Yum cha was "okay" not the best in Auckland but price wise very affordable. They did not have much choices and it took them a while to go around with food. The sio mai took about 20mins to go around. Overall good cheap eats but there are better yum Cha places.
Ray Jay
Came here for yum cha today and it was an enjoyable experience , the place is very busy so I would recommend booking in advance , the food has good taste and the prices are what are expected for good yum cha. $47 for 6 dishes with 2 drinks.
Sabrina Chae
They are ALWAYS so busy!! Everytime I come here the place is fully packed! The food is good, the service is not too bad. They do serve the best four season bean dish I have ever tested in Albany
Angela Gray
We came here because a friend had recommended it to us. We noticed that the quality of the food wasn't that good compared to yumcha in birkenhead or the wairau one. And despite the bad reviews of the service, we had no problem! - although we did have to grab our own sauces. It was definitely busy which created that nice atmosphere and we had to share a large table with 3 other groups. A little pricey.
Adrian Brookes
this has got to be the worst hovel in new zealand i should of noticed the D RATING in the corner of the window, not only has it got filthy kitchens, the staff are rude and couldnt give a stuff, maybe the chinese just dont care where and how there food is cooked
Flora
Great food and bad service.
I believe it's one of the best yum cha in north shore for food quality. If you are expecting good service, then choose somewhere else. Busy is one of the reasons, but I saw lots of other busy restaurants with polite staffs.
Michelle Hwang
Have been a fan of there for about 3 years. Willing to spend 40mins on the road to have typical dim sum dishes there. All items are tasty. But booking is essential and it's better to be there by 11:30am on weekends.
Alex
They served us raw pork dumplings. Don't think I need to elaborate any further. Pretty bloody awful.

If you're looking for yum cha try somewhere else.
Toru Tres
Food is great I have to admit. Some staff are good and some are rude. You should try if you dont mind poor customer service. My friend asked for a hot chilli souce then one of the waitress responded " Im too busy, get it yourself!"
Annie Ren
Really delicious yum cha at Hak Ka Hut. As an experienced foodie in yum cha, I gotta say their standards are very high, their dumplings are very well-seasoned with a nice, smooth texture, while their pastries are also crispy and light. Downside is that it's ALWAYS really busy, booking is strongly recommended (even if you are going as a 2! Sometimes you have to share one of those large round tables with other people, which I don't really like...)
A Tale Of Two Tummies
Food ordered:
Sio Mai
Prawn Dumplings
Steamed Pork Buns
Deep Fried Tofu
Chicken Feet
Roast Duck
Steamed Chicken Buns
Fried Prawn Cakes
Deep Fried Squid
Sesame Balls

Bill: $200+ (10 people)

I got taken here for another work lunch. I love yum cha restaurants and hadn't been to Hak Ka before, so I was stoked to discover a new place (especially so close to work). HK had the typical dim sum cuisine and with so many of us, I got to try a bit of everything. The highlight of this place for me has to be the deep fried prawn cakes with dipping sauce. Absolutely sublime. All of the food I got to sample was delicious, though some of the dishes could've been so much better with the soy and chilli sauce provided by other similar establishments. We did request these sauces, but we were given two tiny bowls of soy sauce (between 10 people) and no chilli sauce. All in all, this was a welcome discovery and I would certainly come back here again when I feel like a change of scenery... but it wouldn't quite replace any of my go-to places for yum cha.
Auckland Food Tours
Delicious Yum Cha. Its always an indication of how good a place is if its always busy, so go early or late as this place gets packed.
Good selection of the usual Hong Kong style Yum Cha, tasty and filling.
Be prepared to go help yourself to chili sauce and soy as they never seem to have enough staff (out front at least) the food comes around quickly though.
Its noisy and fast paced...a good place for a work lunch.
Candii Cao
Came here on a busy Friday night but we manage to get quite a spacious table. The food was very delicious except for the beef vermicelli pot (the vermicelli was like crumbs). Service was minimal but not rude. For dinner we had complimentary soup and dessert.
Miss Kiki
I'm surprised by the bad reviews, maybe we were lucky the day went. We came here on a Sunday for Yum Cha, it was crazy busy but we were lucky enough to get a table for two.
We took our usual favourites - shiu mai, chicken feet, prawn dumpling and bbq pork bun. And another dish with pork and egg in a black sauce.
Everything was good, I wouldn't say it's better than any other yum cha but also not worse. I did find it a bit expensive, maybe it's the yum cha prices on the shore?
Whiskyncigars
Good service. Attentive owners and fast movement of dim sum waiters. Food is pretty good.. Expensive compared to south and east akl but if you live out west or north shore... It costs you more to travel east or south.
Quality is good. Food was good.. No the best But definitely pretty darn good.
FlyingMonkey
I don't care how good the food is or how fast the service is, their hygiene B really worried me when I was there with my family.

Actually I have been here for yumcha before, just once 2 years ago. And their durian desserte gave both my mum and I diarrhea. It tasted off. But we didn't think much at the time. Back then their food hygiene was A. Now downgraded into a B...

When we walked in, the restaurant had a weird stinky fish smell, and the glass spinning tray on our table was real dirty, dirty to the point with heaps of greasy marks that built up little fat bumps here and there. We asked a waitess to wipe it. I had to reclean my cups,spoons,bows....etc. I was spooked with goosebumps. Not a good start.

Ive been told that this is one of the best restaurant at albany and that its always packed. It's true except for the part of being the best restaurant. They catter for a lot of regulers. They dont mind dirty??? What??? My family was not impressed tho. Our seating space was so squashed I'm sure we wont be able to escape during a fire.

Service was fast and food was actually not bad. But the oil that they use was bad. Hopefully it's not gutter oil omg you hear rumours. I just ate plain rice most of the time. I can't trust my food. I was paranoid. Our waitress was coughing a lot as well....she should be here if she's sick...

I hope they would read this and improve their standards please. It's embarrassing.

Not ever gonna return again. Not ever gonna tell my family to go there again. No way.

We visited Hakka Hut for dinner on a busy Saturday night. The restaurant was very busy and there was barely enough room for everyone to move around. The service was relatively quick and the food was good, although I thought that the portion sizes were quite small for the prices.

Compared to other restaurants, the first course of peking duck didn't have very much duck but the second course was more generous. My favourite dishes was the stir fried beef with gailan and garlic steamed prawns.

We were recommended the Taro and Pumpkin Casserole but the combination of savoury taro and sweet pumpkin was quite confusing.

For a detailed review, visit: lucyeats.blogspot.co.nz/2015/08/hakka-hut.html

Nice yumcha place in albany, but always busy. The price is comparatively cheaper than other place. I like their durian dessert very much....

I came here with my landlod and his family on a busy Saturday noon for Yum Char. Their beef meat balls taste not dry at allbut rather fresh and succulentwhich is quite a surprising dish. It is believed one of the best place for Yum Char in Auckland. Despite I haven't yet tried any other Yum Char in Aucklandit did taste better than what I could get in Palmerston Northmoved from PN to Auckland not a long time agoThe food is reasonably priced and the service was alrightnot stood out though.

I have been here a few times. But man, each experience seem to get worse and worse. Came on a Saturday night, we rang up and asked if they were busy. They said no. When we showed up, the whole place was overflowing , and there were people waiting outside. As it was already close to 8, we were definitely not impressed. We managed to get a table that's squashed amongst massive tables and there were little to no room for sitting or people to walk by. There were so many unused chairs around (from the last big group that left) and they just left them around the restaurant. It was so cramped and chaotic, we felt so stressed just to be sitting down. Cleanliness was also not a strong point, we watched them pour leftover hot tea onto the table and cleaned the table with the table cloth beneath the spinning glass table. And then she took the dirty table cloth and put it on top of the seats. We also felt under pressure to put our order in as they kept coming back and asking if we were ready to order and we said not quite. We went with the crispy pork, which had way too much fat and hardly any actual meat. The long beans which were alright but there was something sour that they've added which made it tastes really weird. The tofu was the only normal dish but it was quite bland. I only liked the top part which had mince pork with some sauce. The biggest regret was ordering their chef recommendation: taro and pumpkin casserole. It sounded promising and we thought we would give it a go. I've never come across a dish like this before. I swear it's more of a dessert than a dish as it was sweet and kind of soupy but it was so thick it was like a thick gravy. We all had a taste and didn't even touch it after that. What a waste! Anyway, the list goes on but just to say I won't ever come back here again.

Good food at reasonable prices. Have been here few times for Yum Char and they have been good experiences. I wouldn't call this place most fanciest but their food is very good.
I came here in the weekend for yum char and oh my god I cannot tell you how awful it was. We were seated quickly inside but it went pretty much downhill from there. They have this strange setup where as soon as they come out of the kitchen they go clockwise and we would have been one of the last people to be served and of course that meant that the only things that came to us were the leftovers that no one wanted. Sometimes it would just be the same thing coming over and over again (which was also not very often) We spent close to 45 mins there and had only got 4 dishes! And that was only due to the fact we were so hungry we took what they had left on their serving tray! The only reason why I waited so long was because I placed an order 3 times for food and each time the server was like, oh you haven't gotten that yet? Won't be long. And so they would take an order and then that would be promptly forgotten. I was ready to walk out an hour later when they finally turned up with our dishes but at that point I was really over it.

I will never ever go here again and will not recommend this place for yum char. It was an awful start to my weekend!
