Review Sri Penang - Auckland Central

Celia Chan
Been wanting to try for a while now and so glad I finally did! It exceeded expectations and topped one of my other favourite, and similar Auckland Malaysian restaurant. We managed to get a table without booking (though Monday night) and the lady that served us was also super friendly. We got 3 dishes and an extra rice between 2 people and it was more than enough - we got sambal kang gung (malay veggie not on the menu but we asked if they had stock!), rendang beef, and stir fried spicy squid. Everything was super delicious and even my partner who is Malaysian said it was really good. 100% recommend.

The food is so good! I’ve traveled all over the world, and this is one of my favorite restaurants ever! I’m only in Auckland for a short time, but I keep going back. I know if I come back to Auckland it will be my first stop.

CLAY POT CHICKEN RICE - A must have dish here. The clay pot chicken rice is served in a big sized clay pot, which comes out nice and hot. As time passes the rice at the bottom becomes deliciously golden and crunchy. Generous amount of vegetables and chicken. Abundance of ginger and garlic flavours. We also had the Beef Rendang following glowing reviews by everyone. It was nice, but I think I had too high expectations of the dish. Staff were friendly despite being very busy. Will be back again!

My first day in New-Zeland, it was 12 o'clock, I was starting to feel hungry, passed by restaurants that surprisingly to me where still closed I noticed this one, and read on their store window that they had been named on Condé Nast Traveler Magazine's world food map, what a reference! I went in without hesitating then, loved the laid-back atmosphere, brought by the place itself, staff and customers As it was my first time ever at a Malaysian restaurant, I decided to ask staff for recommendation, as long as it would not be spicy, and went for Mie Goreng, a typical Malaysian meal, made of fried noodles, chicken, seafood, egg, tofu and vegetables Happy to recommend Sri Pinang!

Beef Rendang lived up to its expectations. Food overall was fantastic. Took forever to come though. An hour wait for starters was too long while we witnessed others eating. Service is minimalistic. Food is divine. Very noisy tiny space.

Friendly staff and food was well cooked. Lunch menu is reasonably priced. Highly recommended and will be back again.

We love Sri. We may actually be lifers! We’ve been regularly visiting Ange and her team for 15 years. This is our go to place for a casual meal whenever we don’t feel like cooking, and when we want to show friends a bit of what makes Auckland great for us.

I’m Malaysian, from Kuala Lumpur and it was my birthday on the 18th Aug. My darling husband, decided to treat me to Malaysian cuisine and we headed out with our good friends, and a lovely couple for dinner. The place was packed full of Westerners which truly meant they loved spice, and the ambience was super cosy. For entrée we ordered: • Tofu salad - that comes with julienned carrots & cucumbers, bean sprouts, ice berg lettuce with Kewpie sesame sauce it was 👍🏽 • Spicy veg mini Curry puffs - It was crispy and flaky on the outside, with soft, mushy masala potato on the inside. So so good! Mains were: • Pinang Fish curry ($38.50) for a whole fish - it was 👍🏽 but there wasn’t enough salt. This differs based on preference maybe if they served salt & pepper on the table, there’ll be nothing to pick on. • Eggplant sambal were amazing - Totally a crowd fave. My husband loved it and I felt there was dried shrimp in it but it was ticked as Vegan (V) so I’m not sure but it was yummy. For Dessert we’d: • Sago with coconut milk 5/5 😍 • Banana fritters with ice cream (As my birthday cake) & that was a big WIN! Simple yet yum 🤤 Overall 4 stars, I could have given 5 if the waiting time for our food didn’t take long (took us an hour of waiting time). All the best to the lovely staffs ❤️

This restaurant is my favourite I always come to whenever I feel like well cooked malaysian food. As a regular visitor I tried most dishes and they are all incredibly tasty and reasonably priced. Roti is amazing. Fluffy and crispy. All curry dishes are super tasty including beef randang. Claypot chicken rice is another favourite of mine. If you want authentic wholesome food this is the place to come! Owner and the staff are all very lovely and always make you feel welcomed. Booking is recommended as it is usually very busy on Fri and Sat nights.

I have been hearing about this place for a while now and today I got the chance to visit this gem of Auckland. A must try roti canai and chicken curry! It's like a warm hug to the soul. The roti is aromatic and fluffy which melts in the mouth and the curry has a beautiful hint of coconut. Add up the spice levels as per your taste. I also ordered the mee goreng another good dish. Not very oily like alot of other places (which is bonus). The service was outstanding. It was great to see happy and friendly faces. The server gave us some good suggestions while ordering. Will surely visit again! P.S : they have some great lunch specials!

Lovely personal. Beautiful food. I had a won ton soup that made me miss my grandmother food. The lemon chicken was nice and powerful. And the springrolls took me the my days in Malaysia's beaches. They didn't earn a client but a friend :)

Had great meal. Staff were very helpful as 2 of our 3 person family have allergies. Had beef rendang, roti, chicken cashew nut, Malaysian tea, sago coconut dessert, all tasty and came quickly. Will go back.

Came here with mum and dad today - looks like we have a new favourite haunt! Ordered some roti canai with chicken curry, a plate of char koay teow and the famous beef rendang, and none of these dishes disappointed. Washed it down afterwards with a sago dessert which was extremely decadent too. Angie is such a lovely host, and so are her colleagues too. Will definitely be back here when I next visit with the missus from Melbourne! Re: the comments about the atmosphere - we don't need the full Malaysian experience as that involves a monsoon drain and mozzies 😂 this is fine as is 👌

Awesome food. Favourite is Char Kueh Tiaw. Had to order an extra one. Chicken rice chili sauce was perfect. Would be really authentic if they had free soup with the chicken rice. The Roti was amazing. Tastes like they made it fresh. Not the frozen type.
Chaitra Somasunder
They serve one of the most authentic Malaysian food in Auckland! The staff are super friendly! The lady who owns the place is so humble and down to earth, loved how she was so interactive and connecting with the customers. The restaurant itself has a very homely vibe and great for a dinner date! :) The food was very yummy! We ate so much that I barely got pictures of everything we ordered. Lol. Everything we ate was recommended by the owner and we loved each and every single dish we ordered! Not a very expensive place. Would highly recommend everyone to try it atleast once! Be sure to book a table and find a car park coz the restaurant is on kroad and finding a car park could be tricky!

Oh my I just realized that I walked into a legendary restaurant of Auckland city! This narrow long shape restaurant is full of Malaysian flavours. The lady owner is so passionate about what she is doing and this has been continuing for more than 20 years I guess. Very delicious, very homie feeling, I am loving it!

I walked in randomly without booking on a Saturday night, the place was really busy but lucky we were able to get a table. The staff was super helpful and friendly. My friend has a few allergies and they did their best to accommodate for it. The food was good, massive portions we ended up taking half of it away.
Victoria Rose Mullan
Amazing. A party of four of us shared many dishes. Too many to name but I'll pick out a few- The Roti was the best I've ever had. We had the golden prawns, they were incredible, a special treat. The curry puffs were also delicious.

Love Sri Pinang so much. This is easily my favourite Malaysian restaurant in Auckland and I've been coming here since the mid 1990's! Angie has always been an excellent host and all her staff have always been so friendly over the years. Some of my favourite dishes are chicken curry laksa, roti canai with curry, char kuey teow, nasi lemak and beef rendang. I'm also very fond of some of the desserts e.g. the rambutans and sago served with rich coconut milk...yummmm 😋

This place seems to always be busy with a strong loyal customer base. It is a BYO with cheap corkage. We had the nasi lemak and the wat tan hor which were both average. Wat tan hor was a good portion size. We ordered some rotis to try in addition but they never reached our table. We cancelled them after we had already finished our meal. After we left, we calculated the total bill to find that we had actually paid for the rotis which was unfortunate.
ReneeN
My favourite dinner spot! Great food and a cheap BYO. The roti curry is only $10 and absolutely delicious. Lovely owner and wait staff too.
Samantha Green
The food was delicious and the service was outstanding, can’t wait to come back and try more dishes. The garlic squid was the best dish I have ever eaten.
Sharon Louie
I went to Sri Pinang for lunch with my family and it was a great experience. The owners were nice and chatty who really enjoyed interacting with their guests so the service they provided was really top notch. The atmosphere was alright, a bit too dark for my liking. The food was relatively inexpensive and the portion size was quite big too (especially the Hainanese chicken rice). We ordered from the lunch special, my brother got the nasi goreng and the chicken satay, I got the Hainanese chicken rice and my mum got the prawn noodle soup.

The Hainanese chicken rice was pretty delicious. The sesame tasting sauce on the bottom of the chicken was so flavourful especially when the rice soaks it up. That was probably one of my favourite parts of the dish. The chicken was moist and juicy, generous pieces too! However, my mum said her prawn noodle soup was too sweet for her preference.

One of the better Malaysian restaurants in Auckland, I would be back but parking is kind of a pain.

Came here for a byo and the food was insane. Very few places allow you to bring in a box of beers so it is a welcome change. Fried rice was a notable standout here!
Crackerjacker
One of my absolute favourite places to go for lunch. The staff are wonderful, the food is exceptional and to make it better it’s so cheappp!!

I absolutely love and adore Malaysian food. Since coming up to Auckland from Wellington its hard not to finish every meal at a Malaysian restaurant and say “ Damn that was alright, but its no Little Penang though”. Sri Penang was one of the few places where I’ve actually refrained from using the the above phrase.

I had come as a group to celebrate one of the guys getting a job, and we also wanted a BYO place.

FYI just to be clear I still rate Little Penang better but Sri Penang is very close. In terms of where Sri Penang did well was their golden battered prawns and curries. The gueo teow was alright and the shrimp toast was a little disappointing we were expecting something a bit more interesting than fried prawn on crackers.

Overall though an enjoyable experience, great BYO spot and one of the better Malaysian eateries in Auckland.

Showstopper: Battered prawn and curries.

Overall Grade: B+
Ang Sarap
I like this place, it is never pretentious, a simple restaurant tucked in end of K’Road that serves home cooked style delicious Malaysian dishes. I known this place for more than 5 years now when one of my colleague back when I was working around the Mt Wellington area invited us to dine in here, at first I did not understand why he would drive around 9 km’s just to have lunch but when I tried their dishes it started to be clear.
LilianMonaghan
The food was really delicious. We ordered BBQ pork, chicken curry and devilled chicken curry. Highly recommend devilled chicken curry, omg so good. BBQ pork was very tinder and flavourful. We thought curry will come with rice but nah you need order extra. The only thing that we think they need to improve is the serving speed. We waited for more than half an hour to get our curry.
Abby Gibson
Been coming here since I was a baby with my parents; great food and staff/service, can be a little loud if you come during busy times but that just goes to show the quality of the restaurant
Fairfoodie
Angela has been running this business for 29 years and it still produces the best roti curry around. Rendang beef and Mei Goreng also divine. It’s noisy, loud and warm. Love this place.

Food: Fried noodles with chicken was delicious. Good Malaysian restaurant.

Atmosphere/Interior: narrow and worn down. clean. Nicely dressed tables.
If food is worth it, ambiance does not matter much to me.

Service: Friendly.

Parking: Auckland city. Walk or bike. Don’t take your car.

Found this place in Zomato and surprisingly, it has a lot of good reviews so maybe it’s worth a try. Ordered the pork bbq fried rice and roti, and they’re worth every dollar. The serving is reasonable for the price. Will be surely coming back to try their other dishes.

Sri Pinang’s lunch menu is affordable and offers a range of Malaysian favourites. I met my friend here for lunch on Thursday at 12pm and it wasn’t too busy (although they do take bookings if you want to be safe).

We were both in the mood for fried kuay teow (flat rice noodles with egg, chicken, and some veges), and I like that you can tell the kitchen how spicy you want it. I went for the mild just to be safe, and it was super flavourful without being spicy. My friend – who is used to eating spicy Asian food – said her ‘medium’ wasn’t actually that spicy, so I would probably opt for medium next time. Our portions were also pretty good for $13 (I think the lunch prices a slightly cheaper than the dinner prices).

Service was friendly but ambiance was a bit dingy – so mood-wise it might be better for dinner. But overall, I enjoyed my time at Sri Pinang and would be happy to go again to sample their laksa or nasi lemak.

A little gem on k rd. Great staff. Yummy food. Good options for vegans. It is a small restaurant but cozy. Not expensive and it’s BYO! What more could you ask for!

Favourite place for a low-key midweek BYO with a couple mates. Great local business with delicious Malaysian cuisine. Can get busy so recommend calling ahead.
The Mee Goreng & Beef Rendang are tops.
Satisfying time and again 💯

Cheap and cheerful location and to be fair the place isn’t much to look at however the food is superb and the prices are very reasonable. Highly recommended - make a visit!

The staff were super friendly and definitely one of my fav Malay places in the city! We ordered the mi goreng, lemon chicken and roti which were all delicious, and the $1 corkage is always a bonus. Pretty small restaurant which is super pack on a Friday night, so make sure to book a table. Would definitely go back

Before gentrification of K. Road takes full effect over the next decade, it’s important we stop and take stock. Lift our heads up from our silicone obsession and pay attention to the little guys. The underdogs, the guys fighting tooth and nail not to become the next Auckland hospitality statistic.

Sri Pinang, from what I hear from a fella I recently purchased a butchers block from, is an Auckland institution. His born and bred Auckland family have been going there for decades apparently, so it’s fair to say Sri Pinang have been putting up the good fight! After trying out Canton Café in Kingsland earlier this year and being told Sri Penang is cut from the same cloth, it'd been on my radar.

BBQ Pork with flavour reminiscent of Peking Duck, Shrimp toast with enough crunch to rival any kids breakfast cereal advert, Angel Wings (stuffed chicken wings) were plump, golden and moreish. Mains were a melting pot of classic Malay flavours (I apologise for that terrible cliché, but it’s true), topped off with the most luscious and crispy Roti I’ve ever had, this Roti is perfection (I don’t use that term lightly when it comes to food).

Sri Pinang is BYO and with a bottle shop across the road, there’s no chance of falling short on the wine front. The middle aged lady running FOH (I wish I'd gotten her name) has the sweetest temperament you could ask for, she makes you feel like you're dining at her house.

Table of 4 for 3 courses + enough red wine to ensure your Saturday morning plans are in tatters? $46 per head.

Thoroughly recommended.

Nothing beats their $1 corkage. The food was simply delicious, the price was OK, the staff were energetic.

The place is very tiny though so booking is always recommended.

My favourite restaurant in Auckland hands down. Great food at a reasonable price and lovely staff. Been eating here since i was a kid and will continue to until it shuts or i die.
August Hislop
Had been recommended to try this restaurant by many friends and wow it did not disappoint. Best nasi goreng i have ever had (and i eat lots of em), boyfriend ordered the beef rendang which was also amazing especially with roti. Definitely will be back to try more of the menu!

We are back once again for another family dinner in this dimly lit legend. Chicken and beef satay for starters with deep fried tofu for the vegan. The satay skewers came with the peanut sauce on the side which suited the two people with peanut allergies. They offered a sweet chillie sauce instead which was fine. For the mains, we had salt fish with eggplants, curry chicken with the best roti, kuey tiow, me goreng and okra. We had 3 sago puddings tonight! This restaurant is frequented by one of the diners since it opened!

From the outside (and even in the inside) this place doesn’t look like much. I went with some friends who booked a table at 6:30. When we arrived we were the only ones there for a while time, but once it hit 7 people started to trickle in until they were pretty much full. Once I tried some food I understood why. Attentive wait staff, great flavoursome food - great for sharing. Very reasonably priced with good portion sizes if you want to have some leftovers for lunch!
James
Been meaning to come here for a while, finally did it last night and happy that I did. We just turned up, but it was very busy for 6.30 on a Monday so it's probably best to book, as we got the last table.

The staff are super friendly and sweet, and even enjoy to joke with you, made us feel very comfortable being there.

The food serving sizes are really good, we couldn't finish and we had plenty of left overs! The BBQ Pork fried rice is some of the best I've ever had. It's BYO wine and beer too which is nice.

Only downside is that the dishes came out one by one, with a few minutes inbetween each dish. Not sure if this is normal or because it was busy, but it was all piping hot.

Will be coming here again soon!
Karen Betsubara
It is not about the decor. It is all about the food. BYO license and it is busy and noisy. You need to book.

Although Angie is a great host! If you don't know what to order she will help you decide. Or, in my case tell me what I won't like.

They make all their own pastes, the roti are fluffy and oh the food is to die for.

The sago pudding is a great way to finish the meal.

Love the place.
Thomas Wilcox
Can't believe the amount of highly rated reviews. Grotty set up with poor food quality. How the hell is this place rated 4. The only reason I'm giving this a 1 is because I cannot give it 0!

Amazing service from the servers loved the food!! The head server walked us in to the restaurant from the car provided us a very cozy table!! Good food good place!

We, a family and friends of had dinner at Sri Pinang this week. Our booking was at 7 PM and our table was reserved and were seated at the table by 7:00 pm. No Hassle of waiting for the previous patrons to complete their dinner. Service was very good. The staff opened our wine bottles without any fuss. The mains came right on time as we were midway through our wines. The flavours in all the dishes were amazing. The okra and fish curry had great flavours and tastes of lemon grass, tamarind, ginger. It was great. Sambal was wow. Very dish we ordered were fantastic. Portions were good. Cleanliness was good. It is a small restaurant with the minimum trappings and very good food. Very good service. Price are right. Will visit again.
Himanshu8787
Great service by the staff. Good food at good price. However, the food lacked a bit of authenticity. I ordered the fried egg noodles and it was heavily loaded up with soy sauce and lettuce. It would have been great if the dish was balanced right.

If you are looking for a good cheap eat, have a go.

Ambience - 3
Food - 3.5
Staff & service - 4
Money$$ - 3.5

Great BYO perfect for a cheaper night out with a group of mates.
Worth booking a table in advance because of the tiny $1 corkage fee I think it's the most popular BYO in Auckland! It always seems to be busy!
We went on a Saturday night with a group of about 8, we were shown to our table and orders taken quickly, food arrived prompt also.
Big menu with lots of choice for everyone, vegetarian friendly.
The portion sizes are very generous. A starter and main to share is definitely more than enough.
I'd read before going that a must try was the roti curry - so obv we did. Aaamazing. I now see what the fuss was all about

Would defiantly go back again! :)
Brad Vidovich
First thoughts a nice cozy place and light decor. My friends and I went in for a lite meal and got a few entrees, the satey was amazing we had all of them. We received great service and will be back
Bhavya
Got the laksa...it was nice and hot, taste, I felt, was a bit lacking. The restaurant was quite busy, so maybe their other dishes are better.
Ida
I've been there twice now for BYO and it's a great vibe. Very delicious food, big portions & friendly staff. Only $1 corkage is a bonus. You get your money's worth here!
Lucyeatsakld
Absolutely love this place! Always guaranteed good food and a good time. It gets really busy around dinner time, especially on a Friday night so definitely make sure to book. The food is authentic Malay with AUTHENTIC spice, so be sure to really specify your tolerance levels. The mains are decently sized portions - two mains and two entrees was more than enough to share between four people, having rice and roti to soak up the beautiful sauces and curry. And with Sri Pinang being BYO it was a perfect way to have a great meal without blowing your budget.

if you're after central, cheap and cheerful this is the place to go.
I_like_pickles
I love this place. Affordable. The restaurant owner is super friendly and she really treats you well. The food here is authentic and full of flavour. The only slight negative I have, is a find the food a tad oily but otherwise it's awesome.
Make a reservation if you want to come here for dinner...
Lexi
I've never had a worse dining experience. My friends and i, 14 people, decided to go for dinner. Firstly, we were told on arrival (at 6.30, before we could sit down or greeted we were told that we had to leave at 8) Between then and 7pm we were told multiple times that they needed the table because they had double booked it and the kitchen was closing at 9pm (which makes no sense because if we are sitting there and cannot order, how are they going to serve the people walking in while we were going back and forth with this). When we asked to cancel our orders since we didn't want to spend our Friday night racing through our food like as though the staff were doing us a favour by letting us eat there, we were told the orders were already placed and so we would still have to pay for it. After a long tedious argument and a continuous contradiction of statements from/between the steward and the lady at the door, it was agreed that we could order what our hearts desired. The ordeal was so putting off, 3 of my friends even refused to order dinner. We felt like our money was wanted, but not us. Never before have I felt as awkward in a restaurant as I did at this place.
Secondly, the food was EXTREMELY below mediocre. We heard really good reviews about the place and so chose to go there. However, the food failed to live up to expectation. Despite me asking for my food to be made spicy, it was so bland that I had to just leave the whole thing (waste of my money and not only my time).
As a Chef, I understand that the environment in a busy restaurant can be extremely stressful for the staff. However, that being said, the service and food put together was appalling and unacceptable. There is NO EXCUSE for treating your customers with anything apart from respect and greeting/serving them with a smile, more so if they are nothing but nice in return.
CUSTOMER SERVICE IS KEY TO RUNNING A BUSINESS IN THIS INDUSTRY.
Please train your staff to deal with customers. The food being subpar is not even an issue here. SO RUDE!!
Audric Kam
OVERVIEW: A small unassuming restaurant , which was busy even on a Tuesday night! PROS: The pricing was reasonable, especially for dinner. The customer service was also excellent. CONS: To be frank, the food was lacklustre - the portions were barely sufficient and the flavours were dull.

This place is always so packed and it's hard to get a table at dinner- always a good sign. We ended up ordering alot of entrees and sharing and it was so insanely cheap. The portion sizes are huge. There's heaps of vegetarian options and they can change things to make them vege friendly.
Avi
A little disappointed. Came for a quick dinner with my wife. Ordered beef rendang, gado gado, fish curry. Rendang was ok. Tender. But I've had better in Auckland. Gado gado was not too bad. Fish curry was really not good. Fish tasted poor quality like a sprat. Flavour was not my cup of tea.

Service was friendly. Room was just ok.
I came based on reviews. It wasn't terrible but I won't be back. There's better Malaysian options in town.
Michael Lorrigan
Best Malaysian food anywhere in town. The roti curry and the nasi goreng are delicious. The host is very welcoming and the service is always brilliant. Highly recommend if you are looking for the best Malaysian cuisine in the city.
Monty Oberoi
I have been going to this place for almost 5 years now. Just Close your eyes and order anything and it will be good .This place is always super busy but Angela is a great owner and exceptional service.

BYO and corkage is $1 per person only.

A small cosy Malaysian restaurant on Kroad that is clean, presentable and has reasonably good food.

Because it is small and very popular, be sure to book in advance and be prepared for time restrictions.

Great place to go if you have never tried Malaysian food. We had the stuffed tofu for entree (not bad), The char kuey teow was surprisingly yummy. Sambal eggplant was slightly too sweet for my liking. And the beef with spring onion was nothing to shout about (even though called spicy onion in the menu, I'm pretty sure it should be spring).

Overall, not bad Malaysian food, good ambience and reasonably priced too.Elena Ching

Walked in last night on the off chance of getting a table, they told us to come back in an hour, so glad we did as the food was amazing , had mixed entree, Beef Rendang,Laksa,Chicken Curry & Mi Gorang OMG the noodles are amazing!
Gutted that we did not ask for a doggy bag now as I have food envy and can`t believe we left some behind!
Pictures coming soon as going back for more tonight but takeaways this time.

I was really looking forward to trying this place, as Malaysian food is my favourite.

I came here quite early around 5.45pm for an early dinner, the place was empty of course, being so early and the first thing the lady asked me was 'do you have a booking? we are fully booked tonight.' I found this a little rude, my first impression was that they weren't warm or friendly.

Anyhow I just said 'thats fine' and presumed I would need to leave as I didn't have a booking. However they managed to give us a table.

We ordered chicken laksa, seafood laksa and the spring rolls to start. The spring rolls were delicious and very different, not just your standard/typical spring roll. They served it with hoisin sauce, which was so good with it.

The laksa on the other hand was absolutely terrible!! I do not recommend ordering it, the taste of the soup had a strange flavour to it - it was too watery and just didn't taste authentic.

Prices are fair for $15 - $18 a meal, however I personally prefer other Malaysian restaurants.
Fiona M
This place was amazing. An unassuming hidden gem. My fiance and I went on a Saturday as soon as they opened for dinner and were told we could dine but they needed the table within an hour as they were fully booked. Yes, it's that popular. We had satay sticks, roti, mi goreng and a rendang curry with rice. The food was lovely, fresh and came out quickly. It's BYO which I love and our total bill was $50. We took the leftovers home and got another 3 meals out of it! The staff were lovely, particularly the lovely little lady. Our new fave.
Peter John Ashford
The staff Xmas lunch was super! 15 of us, and the food just kept coming. Everyone said that they really enjoyed the food quality, and the ambience. One staff said that it was the best Goan fish curry she'd tasted in years
Travels4Food
Malaysian food which has been slightly westernised. Not the cheapest Malaysian you can find. Nor is it the most authentic. But otherwise the char Kuay teow and the Mee goreng taste nice. Ask for the noodles to be spicy and it'll give you a bit more of an authentic taste to it.
Amit Tripuraneni
An institution in itself and Angie is such a gracious hostess. Hainanese chicken rice is the best I've had in Auckland and you can't go wrong with their chicken curry either. Gets super busy in the evenings and worth making a reservation beforehand if going with a big group.
Wendy Zhou
Really famous place in this community, have to book table if you can't show up earlier enough for lunch or dinner!! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟hainan chicken was FANTASTIC, specially those sauce....OM! I also tried laksa and spicy fried rice noodle, they all really good!
Auckland Food Tours
This place is an institution of K'road. It serves excellent food and gets very busy so its best to book,
I went with a vegan and we were easily able to get the vegetarian dishes adapted for a vegan (no butter/cream/dried fish) and they still tasted delicious.
We has the sambal okra, stir fried spicy tofu and chicken mee goreng, all outstanding. I've come here multiple times and its always good, the roti and curry are particularly tasty.
Tip: Parking is a nightmare, try down the side street just past the restaurant

Superb food, very good nasi lemak and also some nice chicken curry.
It's byo which is nice but also would love if it was a bar inside as we never knew it's byo only.
But hats off to welcoming staff and manager.
True value for money.
Vincent Warner
Loved this place. Nothing fancy. Great rendang, great pork. Even the lamb was good - I'm not normally a lamb fan. Is BYO so great for cheap date night and very friendly staff.
Katerina
Have been going there for ages. You do need to make booking and if you are lucky to make it on the day it's great. It's family business and staff is very welcoming. It's a small place there and it has a good vibe. Very well priced.
Food is authentic, full of flavou
Parking is not a problem there and you can bring your own vine.
Must go if you like Malay food.

This place is really sweet and has a really good vibe about it . It was warm and welcoming as we arrived. I think this may have been family owned because we felt engaged as they helped us order our vegetarian dinner options.

We felt the service was good and reminded us of actually being in Malaysia. The food was full of flavour and really authentic. We ordered the vegetable laksa and the spicy veggie dodol with rice and roti. The dodol was new to us but enjoyed trying something different. The laksa was very good and tasty.

The prices were affordable as well, for the two of us it came to about $30 without drinks. Would like to visit again to try some other dishes!

Malaysian food is close to my heart. With Sri Pinang and uncle mans both on K road, you're spoilt for choice. The food was great and well priced. Will be back soon.

Great food at a great price - so good in fact, that our group was dragging the chain to leave LOL! I had the Beef Redang, with roti... scrumptious! The service was prompt and staff friendly, considering how full the restaurant was. Bookings definitely recommended. We will be back! (I've gotta try that Sago pudding!!) t- Well done team!!

Delicious food and lovely staff. I will definitely come back again! Very reasonably priced also. Delicious!
Despite being in a questionable location next to a adult DVD shop, this restaurant is potentially one of, if not the best Malaysian restaurant in Auckland. In fact the only drawback there is to Sri Pinang is the diminutive eating area and general lack of tables, resulting in long wait times. As for food, several Malaysian friends have described it as generally authentic, but toned down for New Zealand's tastes.

Absolutely love this place! Amazing value and lovely owner. The roti curry is amazing, I crave it every time I think of this place! The Sambal Chicken, Beef with Special Sauce and the Nasi Goreng are delicious too. It's also BYO which is a +
Make sure you book though as they are popular, for an understandable reason :D
A+++

Best Malaysian in Auckland. The Garlic Prawns are not to be missed! The mee goring is also fantastic. Quite a small place. Friendly quick service. Good prices.

K Road is dodgy but not Sri Pinang! The restruant itself is quite small with around 10 tables. The interior is dark like a meth lab and certainly the dining tables and interior could do with some refurbishment, but ultimately it has this 'old' vibe which is a nice contrast to newer restraunts. We decided to order some Malayisan staples such as Nasi Goreng, Kway Teow, sambal chicken, roti curry and satay. The food here was reasonably priced and had good proportion sizes. The nasi Goreng was very good and had a nice work flavour. Kway Teow was more chinese style but I felt it was a bit too eggy and not enough flair. However the sambal chicken was a standout because it had that deep malaysian flavour but was sweet and tasty! The curry and satay were decent and tasted very nice as well.If you're heading around K road, I think Sri Pinang is a great place for a feed.

Best Malaysian, if not Asian (if not restaurant) in Auckland. Curry and roti are to die for and I could eat here every day (I could even bathe in that curry lol).

Owners are just a delight and whenever we take people for dinner they will return with, or without us; hence u need to reserve a few weeks in advance.

Came for dinner with a group of friend. Service was really good and friendly as staff patiently explained to us what's on their menu.

Ordered the laksa noodles, nasi goreng, chicken redang etc. All was really good and portions were huge! I strongly recommend the nasi goreng though, each mouthful was really flavourful!

Everyone enjoyed their meal and we left with a full tummy. Strongly recommended.

What a fabulous little restaurant. Some of the best Malaysian food I've had in Auckland. The food was absolutely delicious and full of flavour. Portions are generous and very well priced. Highly recommended.

Been here a few times, always packed (which is a great sign)! Food is always delicious and served up pretty quick. You can choose the heat you want in your meal and they're pretty accurate - which means everyone can enjoy there chosen meal. I've tried a few different dishes but just can't get past the curry chicken with roti - epic!

Sri Penang's lunch menu is immensely good value. We came as a large group and were served almost immediately (pre-ordered our meals so we wouldn't have to wait).

I really enjoyed my Nasi Lemak which, I'm told by my Malaysian friends, was very authentic. Others around the table were similarly impressed with their dishes. The only complaint was that the Prawn Noodle Soup wasn't as flavoursome as it could have been.

This has got to be one of the best dining experiences in Auckland. Not only is the food amazing but the staff and especially the owner are the most helpful knowledgeable people I have ever encountered The customer service is brilliant they will also go the extra mile for you making any modifications or suggestions to their menu to suit your tastes or for that extra special dining experience. The food is awesome reasonably priced and good portion sizes. Highly recommend

Where do I even start this review? Sri Pinang has my mouth watering just thinking about it... Their chicken yellow curry and the beef with mushrooms are to die for. The staff is extremely nice and the owner makes sure she works every table by saying hi and welcoming all customers. All dishes are very affordable and due to it's quality and fame, it might be a struggle to find a table. So, make sure you have a booking done 2-3 days before!

Hadn't been to Sri Pinang for many years, but joined a social food group and went along for on Valentines Day. The staff were all very welcoming and the décor very pleasant. Started with the Chicken Sweet corn soup which was hot and delicious. The Nasi Goreng was huge and the best I have ever tasted. Have been raving about it ever since. Highly recommended and will return soon with other friends

I've been going regularly to Sri Pinang for many years, and I have NEVER had a bad experience or tasteless food. The excellent, friendly and professional manager Angie runs a restaurant which reliably delivers courteous service and delicious food in a well maintained simple dining space. The only thing I'm not happy about is when I don't make a booking in time and can't get in, although they do their best to accommodate. Great place. Try the Tamarind fish (uniquely delicious) or the aubergine dish for yummy vegetarian food. Love their chicken curry too.

This is one of my favourite lunch time eats the Mee Goreng is the best in Auckland and $1 per person BYO wine or beer makes this a Friday favourite

What an amazingly surprisingly pathetic service from the owner; I am so shocked with this experience that too with the owner, I have heard a lot of times that people forget about the services when they grow and succeed in their business, and this was the perfect example.
Asked to change the table because the base of the stable was not stable enough and that too when there were 4 tables available, first the lady owner made such a bad face upon asking to move to a different table and then didn't even bother to retain us being the customer. How could you do it with someone who literally recommend everyone to go to your restaurant, and who comes to your place for past 5 years. I will never go to Sri Pinang ever in my life and never recommend. Sorry guys you dropped the ball, you need to know that customer service is life blood of any business, I am sad to write this when the food was my favourite.

Simply the best Malaysian restaurant in New Zealand. The owner is so friendly and memorises every person who visits. So when you return - she remembers you name instantly - how bout that for customer service.
Restaurant is always busy - friendly service from everyone - and the food -omg - out of this world. Reasonably priced. Make sure you visit Sri Pinang - you will always want to return.

Lovely meal. I had the fried kuay teow which was tasted just like home (except the pork scratchings of course hahaha)... my friend had the beef rendang.

Absolutely beautiful. Friendly service and reasonably priced. :)

Love, love, love the roti here! Best roti I've had in New Zealand infact. Lots of tasty things to choose from here but I find it hard to stray from the roti curry - delicious, flakey roti. Very cheap byo (Inc. Beer). Decor simple but service very welcoming and food so good.

great place read a heap of reviews about it and finally checked it out and wasnt dissapointed.. bought our own booze from across the road had a big meal at a great price. cant complain. will be back again soon

I love this place. The food is divine/the service friendly and accomodating.
Really recommend the Penang Fish curry with whole fish - wonderful tamarind flavours or Laksa for lunch with the flakiest roti or Roti Chanai.
Great for a couple and just as lovely with a table of 7 all ordering different things.
And it's one of those places where the owner will suggest things for you to try and she is spot on!
The setting isn't 5 star nor are the decorations but once you smell the food you cease to care. BYO (yippee).

I have been eating at Sri Penang for 21 years now ( since it opened its doors ) and the food and service have been of the same high quality EVERY time I have eaten there. Best Beef Rendang and Roti in Auckland!!! Keep up the good work Angie, love ya!

love this place and the very kind and friendly female owner. she remembers who we are and what sort of things we may like. if i own a restaurant, i would like to be like her:) Their price and menus are very nice too.

By far my favourite Malaysian restaurant. Note: I am not Malaysian, so can't comment on how 'authentic' the food is. The star for me is definitely the roti, but other favourites are the chicken laksa, nasi lemak and char kway teow. A great place for lunch, with generous portions at very reasonable prices.

My Husband and I love this place so much that we go here at least once a month, the food is amazing, I have never been dispointed, I have recomended this Restaurant to so many people and eveyone has enjoyed - Try the stir fried spicy tofu and the beef randang with Roti YUM A+++++++++++++++++ Its such good Value for money and the Manager is lovely. Simply delicious!!!!

Used to like this place alot but they've definitely gone downhill now. Totally unauthenthic and an absolute waste of my time and money. We had the Grilled Assam Fish which was simply fish slapped on with the assam from a bottle and cooked - horrible and have never tasted in while I live in Malaysia (and I'm a Malaysian so I should know). The roti - go and buy Kawan brand in the supermarket for better roti. And don't even ask me about the Sambal Brinjal/Okra; again no taste of sambal at all and not even midly hot when I had specifically asked for Malaysian hot. Would never go back again.
Amy
Great value for money. Clean and tidy, informal atmosphere. But best of all is the outstanding food. We had mee goreng, sambal chicken and roti. Was so much that we couldn't finish it. Prawn crackers were real - not that coloured fake stuff. Flavours were authentic and delicious. Roti was like none other i'd ever tried. make sure you order one at least. By far my favourite Malaysian restaurant in Auckland now.

Sri Pinang is a regular for us. We love it!
The food is so yummy, lots of selection.
Great service and a warm and friendly manager.
Good value for money.
Also it's BYO so you can bring a bottle with you which makes it even cheaper.
Andrew Lee
Friendly staff, great authentic Malaysian food for a reasonable price. Best curries I've tried so far.
Andrew Tidball
One of my favorites! Efficient and friendly service. Especially from the owner who knows my name now! Vege dodol entree is a staple in my order - always delicious! Other faves include kway tau noodles, nasi goreng and/or beef rendang. Always very busy and vibrant - may not be the fanciest of decor - but the food and atmosphere is excellent! Pretty sure there are two dinner sittings 6 or 8 pm - if you have a show or something to go to after dinner go to the early sitting for a speedy service, but if you dont wanna feel rushed book in for 8pm. Booking essential!!

I have been coming here for years and it is still great! I usually come for lunch during the work day but they are open evenings as well, and are byo with only $1 corkage per person, so would be a great dinner option as well.

The menu is Malaysian and I have tried a few things over the years, which are all great and everything is super cheap. My hand down favourite thing is the Roti curry with extra roti. The Roti curry is a simple chicken curry which you can tailor to your taste in terms of hotness it comes with a Roti, this is never enough Roti for me, so I always get an extra ;).

The Roti's are amazing, I have never find another place which does them as good, they are flaky pastry/dough into a flat round bread. Not sure how they make this yummy goodness but for them alone I go back time and time again.

Sri Pinang is a wonderfully authentic Malaysian restaurant on K’Rd serving up rendang and sambal to home-sick Malaysians and spice-hungry Kiwis. The filthily cheap corkage fee is as much an attraction as the food itself, of which their chicken curry and flakey roti are highlights. If you still have room, finish dinner with their sago coconut pudding, a fragrant concoction of coconut and palm sugar caramel.
For a full review and dish recommendations go to http://cheapeats.co.nz/sri-pinang-restaurant/

The first thing that strikes you about Sri Pinang is the efficient service. Then you meet the host and proprietor, Angie, and you understand why this unassuming place is packed night after night, even after 21 years. Angie’s warm and engaging nature makes her the perfect host and she is truly the heart of Sri Pinang.

Coincidentally, the night we visited was Merdeka day, the anniversary of Malaysia’s independence (31 August 1957). This year is rather special; the celebration coincided with the Muslim New Year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri, resulting in a double celebration of Merdeka Raya.

We settled into our teh tariks and our entrée of roti curry. The teh tarik had a good tea flavour, but could do with more milky creaminess. We enjoyed the chicken curry, which came with the crispy roti, had good robust curry flavour with generous pieces of tender boneless chicken.

The sambal okra was sublime, our favourite dish of the evening. I’m Malaysian, but I normally shy away from sambal. It’s not an easy flavour to get right, it can be too salty, too pungent or too spicy. Sri Pinang’s sambal was perfectly balanced; the belacan was fragrant and mellow, the chilli was spicy without going overboard, the sweet/salty ratio was perfect. The fresh, crunchy okra made a great vessel for the sambal.

Pinang fish curry (whole or if you are bone-adverse, also comes filleted) came in a claypot, with thick pieces of snapper and chunky vegetables (okra, green thai eggplant, tomato, onion and pineapple) enveloped in a delicious thin, spicy, sour-ish curry. The fantastic curry gravy was slurp worthy. My dining partner, whose mum comes from Penang, declared this a very good version of a Penang fish curry.

The garlicky, bean-flavoured stir-fried spicy chicken was good but could not stand up to its more wonderfully spiced neighbours. Watch out for the pieces of dried chilli among the onions, courgettes and garlic scapes.

A phrase by Todd Kliman (dining editor of the Washingtonian magazine) echoed in my mind at this point “I paradoxically knew I had ordered too much, and yet, somehow not enough”. I had ordered too much food, but certainly not enough to give us a complete feel for the culinary pleasures of Sri Pinang.

We managed to find room to tuck into the banana fritter partnered with a scoop of passionfruit ice-cream and drizzled with mango sauce and the sago coconut pudding. Unfortunately, the banana fritters was on the oily side. The sago pudding was deliciously cold, smooth and creamy, the taste highlighted by the treacle notes of the palm sugar syrup.

Sri Pinang is a must visit for a taste of excellent Malaysian cuisine; there are some remarkable dishes on the menu. If you get stuck, be sure to ask Angie for recommendations.

http://easyfoodhacks.blogspot.in/2011/09/sri-pinang-newton-auckland.html
