Review Uncle Man's Restaurant & Takeaway - Auckland Central

First time trying Malaysian food so I don’t really have a baseline. Having said that, everything I did order I enjoyed (apart from the Fishcake that came with the meal…mainly because it was not what I expected and was too…”fishy” for my liking…so I cannot discredit them for that). I would go back to try other things off the menu.

An absolute pleasure dining here. The food was amazing 🤩.. I would say this is the best Malaysian restaurant I’ve ever been. The portion size was reasonable and its worth visiting this place. The restaurant has a great vibe and food is just amazing.

Came in for lunch and got the Wan Tan Hor and Nasi lemak with beef rendang. Both dishes were nice and went down well. They didn’t pack that much of a flavour punch, however decent for what it was. Customer service was great and efficient. Food came out very fast.

This place came out in my search for Malaysian food around town. The pictures and the variety of food look pretty decent so I decided to check them out. I came here for lunch and got the mee goreng with kopi tarik. The food and drink came out pretty quickly. You can choose the spicy level of the mee goreng and I chose "spicy"; it came out exactly the way I hoped! The portion is good for one hungry (but not starving) person. It tasted good, reminded me of char kway teow but in noodle form. It came with lots of bean sprouts, chicken, 2 slices of fish cakes and 2 prawns. The kopi tarik is also decent. Taste-wise, I was a little surprised. It wasn't exactly the taste of kopi tarik that I'm used to, but it's not a bad taste. Overall a good place to get your Malaysian fix.

Very popular place. I’ve had this place marked on my google maps for like 5 years, and I finally went in. I came here because I wanted to eat Laksa, but decided I would have the Nasi Lemak with Beef Rendang. The roti seems like the poplar dish here, I wanted one, but felt that would be too much food for my self. The Nasi Lemak Beer Rendang was amazing, the flavors on the beef was the classic beef Rendang, I haven’t had it in long time, but the all the memories came back. The Rice with the Peanuts and the dried anchovies are so good. Tasty! Tasty! Tasty! Two Thumbs up. Free Wi-Fi for guests. I got seated by the door, which was COLD, and had lots of traffic, because this place is very popular and people are coming and going. I noticed that the floors vibrates every time someone walks on it, so the floor is rumbling the entire time I was there. I want to come back for more dishes here.

Best random decision I made in a 3 months long trip! The food is affordable, absolutely delicious, portion size was big aswell and the staff was the nicest people I encountered😁 10/10

Legendary Malaysian restaurant in Auckland for a reason. Delicious, you crave it whenever you think about it. Dishes are executed so well. A favourite of my Malaysian partner's family.

Tucked away in a corner, this restaurant is worth discovering. I particularly fell in love with their dessert, as I have a sweet tooth. Roti Bom and Roti Tissue.

Very good customer service.👍I love their milk tea and Malaysian coffee👍Roti is reasonably priced as well👍They also have a bathroom for customers to use🥹👍they also have open Wi-Fi👍I’ll revisit there to try other dishes sometime The music is a bit loud for me though. And I hope the curry bowl won’t be put on top of the roti when being served

Exceeded our expectations. An excellent 👌 place to have your dinner 🍽️. If you like Thai Food, you should definitely go to the Uncle Man's K'Road restaurant. We ate the Bergedil and the Wat Tan Hour. Both super delicious 😋. The Wat Tan Hour was amazing 🤩. We finished it with the feeling of asking for a second one. 😊

The food was great. The Satay chicken was the best in Auckland for us, made me remember back to southeast Asia home. Lamb was dried and not hot. Roti paper was too sweet for me. Restaurant was full and staff quite nice. Overall, not bad. you should come to try. 👍🏻

Felt you r eating at kedai makan kampung baru coz attended by freindly malay staff who speak fluent Malay slang..ordered tasteful spicy nsi goreng which chef put lots of sliced chicken, prawns and get big portion too..hv to bring back haif portion for later meal.. at reasonable price also. Alhamdulillah 15min walk to Ponsonby Mesjid.

Authentic Malaysian food! Have tried most of their menu at this point. Roti Tissue is the best dessert with condensed milk! Also recommend their Roti Canai, Laksa and Kuey Teow. Iced lemon drink is also a must!

Love the service Love the food Massive portion sizes Value for money Got the beef rendang with two massive rôtis. Freshly made. Flaky. Lots of layers. The teh tarek is just as I remembered it from Malaysia. Authentic.

Cheap, delicious Malaysian food. I was curious about this place for a long time but usually it is always full. This time I went around 5 pm on Sunday. They had a Malaysian ginger beer made with coconut water, it was delicious. I tried the cheese roti (around $13) and chicken skewers (around $16). Both were very tasty. The service was fast. The restaurant was clean. For 2023, the prices were reasonable.
Ken Wai
Very great Malaysian food. Close to what we had back in Malaysia.
Muhammad Taqiyuddin
Good staff. Delicious foods. We like the kwetiauw. Nasi Lemak is okay. The Martabak was too curry to my liking.

Tried out Malaysian food for the very first time. And OMG! It was DELICIOUS! We ordered Roti Canai w/ chicken curry and Nasi Goreng (chicken only). Roti Canai was just out of this world! (1 person serving) Nasi Goreng is a 2-person serving. Will definitely come back for more 💕 #MuslimFriendly #Halal

If you love malaysian cuisine then this a must try out place. Authentic malaysian dishes available. A part of the restaurant is currently under renovation. But still they have the dining option for small number of groups. We were starving and all the way walked to the restaurant. Prices seems really less. We ordered, -2 lamb biriyani - texture was good and the lamb is well cooked. The tenderness is good. The best is biriyani wasn’t much oily. The vege salad was soo good and it gives a kick to the biriyani taste. One portion is more than enough for a person. -Nasi goreng - it was superb and well cooked. The texture and the flavor is rich in taste. They have even put more prawn pieces which is very rare in other restaurants. One portion is more than enough for two people. -Teh tarik haliya - was upto the perfect balance of ginger and sugar. It was a big cup. The staff is really friendly and so pleasant. This is a halal certified restaurant.

We came here for a casual dinner before town using zomato gold, and had heard great things about the roti and it definitely lived up to the hype. The chicken laksa was packed with chicken, fish cake and noodles along with a creamy, delicious soup. Such good value for the price, and when you use zomato gold it's even better! It was packed for a Tuesday night, and rightfully so. Definitely coming back here soon!

This is our "go to" Malaysian restaurant. Very disappointed with today's food. We ordered nasi lemak with chicken curry, it tasted like normal plain rice, chicken curry just spicy, not like before, full of flavor. Won Ton Hor was another item we ordered, portion were a bit small, all I can taste was sesame oil, $15 for 2 prawns on the whole dish, seriously! Curry puffs and roti were the only dishes were normal.

Uncle Man is an institution. Forget about mediocre malaysian places that try to be what this place is. You won't find a better mee goreng or roti canai anywhere else in Auckland. The service is friendly but the wait times can be a little while but trust me, it's worth the wait.
I_like_pickles
Grabbed a Laksa for dinner and was surprised by how filling the Laksa was even though the bowl seemed rather small. The Laksa was so filling and the broth was so tasty.

The roti was really well done but definitely on the more expensive side. It was over $4 a piece, definitely more expensive than some other restaurants.
I was looking forward to the Malaysian food at Uncle Man, because of its high reviews. Seriously, I don't understand why people review their nasi lemak as high as five. First, Nasi Lemak should be Lemak, should be jasmine rice rather than basmati rice, so the rice is moist and greases coconut flavour. The chilli paste was sweet without spicy. Serving portion is excellent! Fried Chicken and Teh Tarik are the closest to Malaysian. The tofu stuffed with veg was good, but the satay sauce was disappointed. Seriously, Malaysian food is about spices and hot. It would be best if you improved your sauce. 🥴
Josephine
One of the best authentic Malaysian cuisine in Auckland

I was really disappointed with my last visit. I ordered mee goreng which is my usual order and unfortunately there was barely any chicken, maybe only 3-4 tiny slices of fish cake and there was no prawns at all. The mee goreng was also pretty bland compared to what I've had in the past. Also gutted the queen street branch has closed down, I always received good service there. Sadly you don't get your moneys worth anymore.
Ming Lee
Large portions and homely food. Not a place for a first date as everything is quite Malaysia kopi tiam vibe. Brother rates it as one of the best nasi lemak's in AKL and he's eaten a lot.
Coral
Lots of yummy things at Uncle Man's. I had the Chicken Laksa and Roti Tissue. You see the cook hand-roll the rotis by hand which is awesome. Can't wait to come back.
Ming-the Merciless
Disappointed with the food.... 3 adults with 3 different mains and 2 starters. The mains portions were small and a bit on the bland side. It was fairly full of customers and it was hot and stuffy inside - could do with either air con or better ventilation.
JDub
Great value for money, tastes great always. Good variety on the menu. I always recommend Uncle Man for Malaysian and it hasn’t disappointed anybody that I know.

Liquor licence would have made it even better.

The place is a bit dingy, but the food here is really good. We got the seafood laksa. The soup was really nice. We also got the kuey teow goreng. This had a lovely smoky flavour. Well recommended.

I’ve been wanting to come here for such a long time but who can be bothered to go up to k road.

Service: 6/10
The people who served us were very polite but it was quite hard to get their attention.
They were kind enough to tell us that their kitchen was closing so we had the chance to order some last minute dishes.
The food took quite a long time to be served but I understand that they were a little busy.

Food: 8/10
My friend thought this place was way better than papparich but I’m not so sure.
The laksa was very creamy but it’s slightly spicier than I expect which kinda masked the coconut flavour. The noodles were cooked to perfection though.
The wan tan hor was very creamy and the noodles were flavourful and chewy.
The medium mee goreng was popping with flavour. I definitely recommend this if you can take the heaviness.
The roti was my highlight. It was very crispy and the beef Rendang was so tender it was falling apart when I tried to pick it up.

Ambiance: 5/10
The store isn’t the newest or most modern thing I’ve seen but at least it’s clean.
It was very hot inside and I couldn’t stop sweating because there was no fan or air conditioning.
It was also quite dark which can provide a calm atmosphere but I would still like it to be slightly brighter.
The kitchen and the crowd can also make this place pretty noisy.

I enjoyed the food but I’m still not sure whether I like this place or papparich more.

Great food. Excellent prices.

Love this place we have tried almost the whole menu now

This is more Indonesia taste then Malaysian but we enjoy the nasi lemak, nasi briyani, satay, roti canai always. Well done and keep up good taste!

The service was impeccable. We ordered chicken nibbles (starter), teh tarik, prawn sambal nasi lemak and seafood laksa.

We started off with the chicken nibbles which came with a sweet chilli dipping sauce. We found the nibbles flavourless and neither of us enjoyed it nor did we want to finish it. My friend ordered the seafood laksa and I could barely find fault in it, it tasted similar to what I would get back home. I ordered the nasi lemak, the meal was extremely dry and this was made worse by providing very little sambal. I told the wait staff that the meal was dry so they kind enough to provide me with a bit of chicken soup which made my meal edible.

I would recommend the laksa here but not any of the rice dishes. The price was definitely reasonable.

Being a Malaysian myself, I think there are better Malaysian restaurants in Auckland.
Manik Bhatia
Great place at great location! Amazing food. must try all the dishes. However "MAGGIE GORENG" is their specialty. Quality food with reasonable prices. Great customer service even though during peak hours. Been there so many times and did takeaways - Always amazes with food! :-)
Pig Cat
Dinner worth full marks. Everything is perfect. Excellent Malaysian cuisine of many options. Nicely presented. Not expensive at all. Usually fullyseated.

Lunch worth 2 stars only. Milk tea tasted like bland water. Dishes were below their standard at lunch time. Just like two completely different restaurants.

Will come back at dinner time only.

Cairan Merissa
ordered food without seafood, served with it (allergic) - no apology from them
Adrian Saw
The food is good but:
1) the place is way too smokey to the point where if you sit close to the kitchen you feel smoked out by the cooking. Doesn't help that they have the roti frying station at the front of house. You will leave smelling like you work in the kitchen each time.
2)My last visit- the food was too slow. I was in a hurry and had to leave at a fixed time. I asked for an estimate of how long I would have to wait and it went way past the 15-minute that I was told. When I approached to cancel, I was told it was even cooked and had to wait for a further five minutes to being cooked. If you have a successful business like theirs you would think increasing their kitchen capacity would make sense. After all, they increased their sitting capacity by doubling the space and taking over the next door.

But for God's sake sort out the ventilation and spend some money to upgrade the kitchen to create a much better environment for the customers.
Lily
Uncle Man’s do the best roti canai’s I have ever tasted, you can choose from different options of curry, but the Dahl one is the best in my opinion. It’s so hard to branch out and try other things here when you already have your favourites, but I would definitely recommend the Roti with Dahl, the Laksa and the Nadi Goreng
K
Best Malaysian place for roti canai, beef rendang, maggi mee goreng, nasi lemak and all the Malaysian drinks. Their specials are so good too
Louise
One of the best, if not THE BEST Malaysian place I’ve had in New Zealand! I’ve been recommended this place by my Malaysian friends so many times, and I finally went. I LOVE IT SO MUCH.

We got the Kwey Teow, beef rendang and chicken curry with roti. And literally I have nothing to complain about! The price is so reasonable (they also do Monday-Thursday lunch specials), and the portion sizes are so big!
We also decided to get roti tisu and roti kaya, which were both amazing! The tisu was light and crispy and the roti kaya is exactly as you’d imagine. The roti is super fluffy and the sweetness from the kaya perfectly balances it out.

I also got the teh tarik which was pulled really well and everything was blended very nicely. Perfect for a cold winters day!

Personally think I’ve found my new favourite Malaysian restaurant! 😍
MCP
One of the best malaysian joint in Auckland! Their kwey tiaw goreng and mee goreng always so good! They also come in a very generous portion for the price. Their roti is also good and fluffy!

Came here as recommended by a Malaysian friend.
It’s a restaurant on k road. Was very difficult to find parking on a sat night !! Nevertheless we got there, but was 20 mins late as we couldn’t find parking...

Food was hit and miss, ordered curry chicken roti , not good, curry was watery and roti was not crispy, beef rendang was nice, char kuey teow was nice , but then the laksa and wa tan hor was not great either ...

Though price are very reasonable, we probably won’t be back as there are better options in central and east Auckland for similar price.
Hungry Teddy (20% Zomato Gold, Use : HUNG2716)
Cheap, authentic, and delicious Malaysian food. The roti canai was great. The set comes with two roti canai and a curry of your choice. The kwetiau was nicely flavored too. You can choose mild or spicy one. We ordered the spicy one. It wasn’t properly mixed, so some portion were spicier than other. It was still nice though. Priced around 15$ per person.

My partner and I have recently started exploring Malaysian food(after trying some at KL) and so far have found it exotic yet giving the vibes of cross cultural amalgamation that south east asia is famous for. Uncle Man's restaurant we tried after reading really good reviews and a good rating. The outlet is located on a very busy road and near an intersection(no good parking a first timer should expect). We ordered for the takeaway, very busy sat eve and many people were waiting to be seated, 30 mins waiting time was for the takeaway.

The food turned out good, Char kway teow flat noodles with tofu prawns and chicken a bit small portion for the price and we got only two prawns in total??, spicy hot( for the young kids not recommended) but very good. We enjoyed it. The other dish we tried was chicken satay skewers with peanut sauce, nice juicy grilled chicken pieces with sweet sauce made a good combination. Overall a great experience, we will try more dishes.
Jeannette Salim
The food tasted amazing and it's hard to find better value for a dinner out. I would recommend the beef rendang with rice, roti is a bit bland.
Lisa
Food: Portion size is okay. Nasi Lemak was salty. Finished rice and still had half of the main left.

Atmosphere/Interior: old. 1970s feel. Small tables but spacious to walk around.

Service: Friendly.

Parking: K’ Road. that says it all.
Robin Tay
Beautiful Malaysian food served. The roti canai is soft and fluffy. Just too good to the original from Malaysia. Curry laksa itself was too spicy and oily. The satay was nice but any dish that was made with roti with the dhal or chicken curry was just delicious. Even the murtabak was spot on.

Okay well quick update, since my last reviews in 2015 I’m vegan now. When I say vegan, I still eat chocolate and Mac n cheese, as well as fish, you could just call me a conscious eater ;)
Went here with my (Younger) boyfriend for a nice meal, having walked past a million times, but never going in. Had heard rave reviews, but was low key horrified when our curry puffs came out and were still cold in the middle. Not the goods on a brisk April Auckland evening. they heated them back up for us which was lovely, but the damage was none the less done. I got a tofu mi goreng, that did it’s best to lessen the pain of the frozen curry puffs. Not bad, but nothing to write a Zomato review about. While I’m on the topic, don’t go watch that lady Gaga movie with Bradley cooper, it’s trash. Back on topic, my mans had something with meat in it so I refused to try, but it looked oily AF. To top it off, the tables were particularly sticky, like wooden floors after a house party. In all, probably won’t be back, Unless it is my boyfriends shout AGAIN, I happened to forget my eftpos card, hehe.
Xox, food hon.

Nasi Lemak with prawn sambal 6/10
I heard amazing things about this place but perhaps it's just not flavours I'm used to liking. The prawn was very spicy, the anchovy was very salty and rice just slightly hard. This is my first nasi lemak so I don't have the right to judge if this is good or not. Just not flavours I'm a big fan of. But I'm definitely going back to try their roti. As I was waiting for my dish I saw a few ordering them and it looked super fluffy and keen for the sweet tower shapoed roti with sweetened condensed milk 🤤
Brandon Huang
Oh my lord. Uncle Man is a legend. There is no cuisine that beats Malaysian, and goodness, this is the best Malaysian food Auckland has to offer.

One bite of their Nasi Lemak with Beef Rendang and you'll be in heaven. Succulent, tender beef cooked for hours until the coconut milk has reduced to a rich, oily, aromatic paste. Spicy, intensely savoury sambal ikan bilis to coat your mouth in pure deliciousness.

One spoonful of their decadent, flavourful seafood curry laksa, with perfectly cooked noodles, seafood, everything. Kicks the back of your throat, but holy guacamole you can't get better than this.

And all for the lowest price you'll find anywhere.

Uncle Man's takes top restaurant in Auckland. No argument.

Usually get the usual nasi lemak but was feeling adventurous today and got the biryani with lamb - what a good choice. The lamb shank is very generous in size and tastes so good. Got cheese roti which was a nice change. The satay and teh ice which were alright.
Lance Tie
It's become a weekly regular for me. The roti and curry, satay and the teh tarek takes me back to my trips to Malaysia as a youngster (authentic).

Uncle Man's is a great casual lunch option for those working nearby. Menu has good range with a variety of spice levels, so there’s something for everyone. I also like that they have daily specials running from Monday to Thursday and they offer a loyalty card too.

The nasi lemak was filling for $11.50 (when it’s the daily special). Pretty classic with a balanced proportion of ingredients. The curry wasn’t too spicy and the sambal wasn’t overpowering either. Their fried kuay teow was also amazing: flavourful, good portion for $13, and even came with prawns.

On my most recent visit, my wat tan hor was nice but a little too salty for my liking. My friend enjoyed her lamb biryani – which was massive and came with a decent looking salad.

For a shop on K Road, they have a surprising amount of space. It’s fairly busy at 1pm (which means they don’t clear the tables quickly and it looks a bit messy), but there always seems to be enough seats. I noticed that the service was quite fast at 1:30pm.

Overall verdict: filling, tasty, and good value. I’ve been here 3 times and am always happy to come back! Keep up the good work!

Feeling a bit peckish, fanced one of my favorite dishes namely Mee Gorang, was not disappointed with my take away good sized serving, extremely tasty and authentic, highly recommend, looks like they have or are opening a branch at Eastridge which will be great as the whole waterfront are suffers an appalling low standard of food outlets, especially Asian, will be a welcome addition.
Darren Big Belly
Authentic Malaysian food alert!!
Portions are generous and full of flavour. Definitely recommended.

The only thing I didn’t like was the deep fried potato thing. That’s probably just a matter of preference.

Really nice Malaysian food with lots of seating! Came at 7pm on Valentine's Day, ordered, got our meal in less than 10 mins, so quick!!! Bought the lamb skewers, nasi goreng, curly fries, fried banana with chocolate sauce and chicken rice. Really good portion with the mains. The chicken was tasty and succulent, the fried bananas went well with the vanilla ice cream, the nasi goreng was surprisingly well flavored with a chili kick and the lamb skewers had a nice peanut taste. Would love to come back and try the roti dishes and the chicken curry laksa!
Natasha R
Fabulous food every time I've been here. Lovely staff and incredible hand made roti. Definitely a must if you love authentic Malaysian cuisine!

Came here with a group of 4 of us. The service was great and the food came out pretty fast. Food tasted authentic and the overall ambiance of the restaurant was nice. Pricing was reasonable as well and we left pretty full.

The food here is tasty. I especially like the Roti Canan as it is very nice with the butter and chicken curry and the roti is not oily at all. The Mee Goreng is quite tasty but I would have given Uncle Man a higher score if it could be a bit less salty.
Tony Wan
Had lunch here on several occasions. The restraurant was pleasantand the service was friendly. The food was tasty but on our recentvisit to the restaurant the food was quite salty. Apart from this if youare looking for some Malaysian food, this place is recommended. Just tomention, parking may be quite a problem.

Just a note, the photos shown are from our earlier visit.
Petra Ong
The most authentic Malay food in Auckland, served with a laid back ambience. Try their roti canai, mee goreng and nasi lemak. It tastes just like back in the kampung!
Quinn Mai
Great food with generous portion and decent price. Friendly service. It didn’t take long to get my food served. Good place to stop by for a quick meal.
Gerald Chan
Being a Malaysian myself, a friend of mine recommended me to try this place out and I am glad I did. The Roti Canai with Chicken Curry was delicious; the Roti itself was easy to tear and had a good fluffyness to it. It's taken me a long while to search for a good Teh Tarik in Auckland and I believe I finally found it; the Teh Tarik tastes exactly how I'd have one back in Malaysia and it definitely makes me feel at home.

While the place itself is small, there is no doubt that the ambience makes you feel comfortable. The workers are really nice and food comes out not too long.
Ayaan Shaikh
Great little spot with massive portions for the price paid. Absolutely love how authentic the food is, all their staff are very knowledgable about the food as well (we asked someone to show us how to eat their dish the right way!) their weekend special was out of this world, huge servings for a meagre $17, was barely able to finish it all. If you're around K road, check this place out!
Adrian Lim
Been here many times and I have yet to be disappointed with the quality of the food. It's very close to what you'd get from a mamak in KL. Prices are also fairly reasonable.
Jade
This is a really good restaurant that offers great Malaysian food. The only downside is that they are very slow and sometimes never comes to take your order as soon as possible and even make you sit there for a long time unattended. There were many occasions where I had to walk up to the staff and tell them I needed my order taken and had to wait a long time before they take your orders. Other than that the food is good and authentically Malaysian.
Pop Kawn
This place is bomb af. The place seems small and may get a little crowded but none of that matters once you try the food. So far I've tried the roti canai with both chicken curry and beef rendang, chicken laksa and char kuay teow. They were all delicious and flavorful! The roti was made perfectly too, just right. I was surprised by how quickly all the food came out, the wait wasn't long at all. If I could ask for anything more from this place it would be a liquor license so I could have a beer to go with the food. 5 stars, great place.

Excellent and genuine service, good portion of food yet affordable price, great and tasty food, what more could I ask more? :) would definitely be back!

I would give them A on their service , when we are paying normal $10 for our food , I would expect the quality of the food to be the same as the price .

I don’t know why this curry chicken tastes so dull and watery , literally tastes like curry+ extra water
Dissapointed
Ilona Halim K.
Me and my partner (who is Malaysian) really enjoyed the food. I ordered the seafood laksa, which at first looks small but actually is a really generous serving and I almost couldn't finish. My partner ordered the nasi lemak w beef, and it was so good we decided to try out one more dish to share, so we ordered roti canai. Everything was very delicious and authentic, tasted exactly like the food back in Malaysia. They were reasonably priced too for the amount of servings you get. Best Malaysian food in town!!!
Little Borneo Girl
This is the place to come for authentic Malaysian food (typical Malay food & Halal). Best roti freshly made in front of you. A variety of hawker food at reasonable price. We love this restaurant.
Shannon Em
We loved this place!! The food was the best Malaysian food we’d tried in Auckland, particularly the delicious beef rendang and roti. Portions were so generous in comparison to price. Can’t wait to work our way through the menu!!

I LOVE THIS PLACE SO MUCH! Their roti canais are delicious, the char kway teow is soo good and I love their bee hoon soup. They have the nicest milk tea, honestly this is my favourite place to get malaysian food and their prices are really affordable, and the staff are so nice and friendly!!!

Uncle mans is like a 2nd home to me. The meegoreng is just what i could always use. Always the same goodness. Idk how you gould find any negatives about this place.
One of the best place to have cheap food. But quality is higher than other Malaysian food outlets in AKL. Went queen street and k road both outlets. Food are tastier in kroad than queens road one.

Great place and atmosphere. Hands down one of the most authentic Malaysian food around. Have tried almost everything on the menu including the Azizi burger(not recommended). Rendang, roti, mee and maggi goreng, mee rebus, nasi lemak is a must try.
Uncle man made me loving Malaysian cuisine. These three things I must recommend to all foodies - Mee Goreng, Seafood Laksa, and Roti Canai with added butter and chicken curry. They just make them so tasty! One recommendation for the restaurant is that they could offer smaller portion of Satay chicken or Satay lamb, I think three or four stewers would be enough for two of us as starter. The environment is average as it is just a small restaurant but service is good. People working there are very friendly.
Jessie Tan
Authentic Malay Malaysian food. Legit roti making skill and real tasty mamak mee goreng. Bring you back to Malaysia instantly. Where you can taste the wok hei. If you want add on a sunny side up would be even more perfect. 😇

Absolutely delicious food. Particularly the Nasi Lemak - rendang, laksa and the Roti Canai are favorites. Good service and good value. One of my favouritecheep and cheerful lunch spots.
Love this place! Been here twice now and it is simply great food at a great price with great service. We came as a large group and it was busy so food was delivered slowly one by one however nonetheless it was delicious and we had a great time.

Overall a positive suprise. We had the Mee Goreng, the Kuey Teow Goreng and the Nasi Biryiani Ayam.
Our food came quickly and they were very tasty in flavour and texture.
Fast and friendly staff.
Highly recommended

Best Malay restaurant ever! Always eat Nasi Goreng here! and my husband gets the chicken or lamb biryani! I would really like to try the rose milk tea, but maybe next time! Heard it’s good.
Bianca
Char kway teow was ordered. Seafood. Good amount of seafood, beansprouts nice n crunchy. Was a little light on the serving size though, was a bit spread out on the plate. Heat was good and I liked being asked if wanted mild /med or hot. Plenty of options that they can also make as vegetarian (including a laksa) which can be very tricky sometimes. Main gripe was just that servicing size was a bit small, everything else was better than 3 stars. It's downstairs in a food court with other dining options around.
Misscocolitten
We are pleasantly surprised by this place, the decor is very basic but the food is amazing! We had roti, Char kway teow and their daily special the flounder, all of which were packed with flavours. The service was quick and friendly too. Highly recommend.

Regular staple for solid Malaysian flavours and delicacies , had the lamb shank biriani plus ice coffee which hit the spot all the time ! Also watch out for the daily lunch specials for reasonable deals - highly recommended !

My partner and I had a really nice dinner here on Sunday. Highly recommend potato patty as a starter! They are crispy and golden on the outside and are super yummy!

Came here for dinner. The place isn't anything fancy, it's basic and just how I like my Malaysian restaurants. I ordered the rendang, their version of roti and curly fries. The roti and curly fries were as expected. The rendang wasn't the best I've ever had, however it's as expected and enjoyable none the less. What gives this a four is the affordable price. Come here for an affordable Malaysian experience.

I’ve been here over 5 times, good for meeting up friends or taking the whole family. Always great! Real value for money. Authentic taste. Try their Teh Tarik spiced tea.
Amanda
The best lamb briyani and nasi ayam!! The chicken nibbles are nice too. The virgin pina colada was too funky for me. Overall it was cheap for a lovely authentic food.
Khloe
Portion is good. Good value for money. Food is ok, pretty average. Seating is quite crowded. This place is slightly overrated. Ok for a quick lunch.

Recently, we paid a visit to a highly recommended restaurant on K Road, Uncle Man. They serve really good Malaysian food with an authentic menu which tickles your taste buds. We were seated straight away and just had to wait for them to put two tables together as we were a group of 8. The staff are friendly and were willing to take any questions we had. I ordered Kuey Teow Goreng, flat fried rice noodles tossed with vegetables, fish balls, chicken and juicy prawns. This is my favourite dish whenever I go to an Asian restaurant. This was probably the best one I've tried but the downfall was, which kind of ruined the eating experience was that I ordered at the same time as the rest of the table, but my dish was 'forgotten?' My dad had to go ask again if it was ready which it wasn't. By this time, everyone at our table was near finished. I was kind of in a rush to finish after that because we were going out after that. The dish was a large portion which I couldn't finish, but it had a really good balance and the prawns they used were super juicy and were not too fishy, which meant they were super fresh. A good medium level of spice made this dish delicious.

read the full post on azanagoesbananas.weebly.com

Been here several times..I tried one if their dishes which was on special..can't remember what it was but it came with chicken and also a dry rendang..soo good(pictured on the green serving dish).. went again yesterday with a friend.. we had nasi lemak each.. with beef rendang, sotong and prawn petai sambal! Always soo good. Never fail to satisfy my craving for authentic malaysian cooked food. Oh and the kopi tarik and the teh tarik less sugar is a must!
David
Uncle mans has the best roti in Auckland and for that alone it’s worth a visit! Their roti canai with chicken curry is a must have and there’s great lunch specials throughout the week. The decor is a little uhh crazy with some weird ‘art’ on the walls but who’s looking at the walls when you’re shoving delicious roti into your mouth!
Sammarougi007
Best Malaysian food in town. Great atmosphere, food was served on time, and the staff were all friendly. Perfect for satisfying your authentic Malaysian craving.
Asianfood4life
Hands down the best quality and cheapest Malaysian restaurant in Auckland. If you're looking for Malaysian food in Auckland, go here (seriously!). I've been here 5 times and I must say I've never been disappointed - the staff are polite, food is served very quickly, has good flavour, good portions and quality for the price and tastes closest to food in Malaysia. Their take on classic Malaysian dishes like nasi lemak, mee goreng, seafood laksa and roti chanai are amazing. Plus their rotis are fresh and handmade! Their rojak mamak was very filling I had to takeaway the dessert xD Loved the curry puff and lamb skewer entrees too. They have dessert of the day as well, I loved the kuih ketayap and apam balik (can't wait to try more Malaysian desserts there). I've had their teh tarik and it was a tad too sweet for me, so next time I'll ask if they can add less sugar :-) Their prices are so affordable, so as a student I always come here with my friends! I once came with a friend who's vegetarian, when she asked the waitress if they had vegetarian noodles she said they were able to make most of the noodle options vegetarian :) Highly highly recommend this place. Plus their food is halal so if you're looking for good halal places in Auckland, this is one :-) I visited on Tuesday 12th but sadly there was a notice saying they were closed from the 11-13th, and also from the 18th to the 20-something (22nd I think), because of the holiday season, so you better make time to visit this amazing eatery! Cheers :D

Best Malaysian Restaurant in Auckland! The Char Kuey Teow and Mee Goreng dishes are my favourite, never disappoints. There is Uncle Man Express in the foodcourt of Metro which is just as good.

Good service, friendly staff.
We order Wat Tan Hor($12.50) ,
and kuey teow goreng ($12.00)too salty.
My husband order teh tarik.($4.00)
I order a drink name [Spider] (A&W root beer with scoop of ice cream on top. ($4.50)I feel expensive.

Friendly prompt service. There were quite a number of tables filled despite it being a tuesday lunch time, I could only imagine how packed they would be during the weekends.
They have an extensive menu that is very budget friendly with most of the mains being priced around $12. We ordered the mee hoon goreng and kuey teow goreng and were surprised with the outstanding portion size. Great authentic flavours in both dishes.
The teh ais was delicious and perfect for when we went, which was a hot sunny day.
The best Malaysian restaurant I've been to in Auckland so far and was a great experience overall.
Partha Mukherjee
The best Malaysian place in Auckland in my opinion.
Not very expensive, average pricing but really good authentic Malaysian food, the staff is friendly but the only downside is that the service is very slow and there always seems to be some sort of miscommunication between the kitchen staff and wait staff. As couple of times they didn't even serve me what I wanted looked like they forgot or misplaced my order or something.
Toby Marris
The roti is a must - wonderful and flakey - i ordered roti canai, curry puffs and stuffed tofu - all fresh , hot and tasty - and really more than i should hav eaten . Setting is clean and tidy, and its good value for money.

Been recommended here by a friend, said food here is very authentic. Rendang beef and roti was very nice, not too sure about the laksa, soup was soso for us. They charge 50 cents for Sambal, which is quite unusual for Malaysian restaurants, I guess that’s a way to stop people from wasting food. Service was good, price point is very good, will probably go back to try other dishes.
James
Good prices. Serving sizes are bigger than average, and the food has heaps of flavour. Staff are friendly. Food did take a while to come out, but it was worth the wait. They don't sell alcohol though.
Mei
This was my first time in this well known restaurant. I had the seafood laksa which was mild and flavoursome, just the way I like it. There were both egg and vermicelli noodles with the seafood. My friend enjoyed her chicken laksa. Keuy Teow was rates 3.5 with loads of soy sauce. Generous plates. Mee Goreng was also nice. We had Gadar Gulung was to go. It is like a green coconut pancake which was a nice surprise. A highlight was watching the roti chef spin the dough in midair and catch it with the other hand. Will try the banana roti next visit.

Stopped by for a birthday lunch. We had around 10 people so we booked ahead.

we were seated and were able to order when we were ready.

Didn't have to wait too long for food (around 20 minutes) but it did take a bit of time for everyones food to come out.

I had the chicken laksa and it was tasty. Nice broth and noodles.

Best part of the roti tissue that we shared for dessert. Biggest problem with it was the small portion of condensed milk so we couldn't douse the while thing with it.

Really nice food and quite cheap to boot. Keep an eye out for the lunch of the day which is only $10.
Alas
This place serves reasonable authentic Malaysian food. For two people $30. The satay is pretty good. The roti chana's are up there. Their desserts are pretty good. They need to stay away from serving non Malaysian food though.
Noms Burger
I visited to just try the Roti Canai and it lived up to the hype.
The Roti are big and flakey, plus they are made fresh. The Curry Chicken or Beef Rendang are tender while loaded with flavour.

My Malaysian friend said this place is very authentic and highly recommended the Roti Canai.
Troy Choi
As a person who lived in Malaysia half of my life, I have been to many different Malaysian restaurant in nz, and without a doubt I can say, this restaurant is real Malaysian food then any other restaurants I've encountered. It has the same taste, flavour, fragrant of Malaysia. I would highly recommend for people who has homesick for Malaysian food.
Heybigsy
One of the best Malay meals I've had outside of Malaysia - would highly recommend the Roti Bawang and the Kuew Teow. Friendly staff and nice vibe. Amazing price for what it is - our meal cost $28 for 2 of us.
Nasirudinyusoff
The food is in a big portion and yummy. A should try place. The price is affordable. Lots of varieties from malaysian food, chinese food and western food.
Kirsten
Was craving for South East Asian food, and wanted to explore K Road and their eateries! Uncle Man's was the place to go! Realised they had a lunch special, which was the Roti Canai with Chicken Curry! It was quite busy when we walked in, the only way to get the staff's attention was by raising my hand! The food took about 15 minutes to arrive at our table, however, the curry was absolutely full of flavour. I could taste the coconut milk that they used to make the curry! I've heard that their roti is handmade as well! The portion was huge for me. I was struggling to finish the second roti! I will be back to try more of their dishes!
Najwaroza
Satisfying my craving over nasi lemak. The best squid sambal I've ever tasted in New Zealand. The ambience felt when you enter the restaurant; would remind you to the kedai kopi and mamak restaurant back in Malaysia. Surely will repeat again.

Wow this place is so good! Came here with a friend, ended up ordering 2 more takeaway dishes - nasi goreng is our favourite, they don't skimp on the shrimp, portion size is good too. Love the kebabs as well, nice smoky flavour (though not a fan of the dipping sauce). Good value for money, one dish can be shared between two. Think I'll be a regular here from now on
Ann Castillo
Serving tasty and flavorful food with huge portions make Uncle Man one of the most value places to dine in. Place can be quite busy so food may take a while to be served.

My friend introduced me to Uncle Man about 5 months ago and I got hooked. Affordable comfort Malaysian food is their specialty. It's always crowded at dinner service, plus the locale is not ideal. Nevertheless food is authentic according to my Malaysian friends. My go-to dish would be Chicken Laksa. Perfect potion and taste balance for me. The Mee Hoon Goreng is pretty good as well. Also Roti Kaya with ice cream is a must, it's so so good I can't stop eating. Recommended!
Trin
This place is officially my favourite Malaysian restaurant!

We ordered the megoreng, Mehoon goreng and roti canai. The dishes were full of flavor!

Highly recommended!
Christina
I have been a regular to Uncle Man's since being introduced to it by my Malaysian friend 3 years ago. The service and quality of the food remain outstanding, and although menu prices have slightly gone up, it's still very affordable and worth it.
For anyone visiting for the first time, I recommend their Roti Canai, Mee Goreng, Lamb Briyani and Chicken Curry Laksa. Their Nasi Lemak and curly fries are also delicious.
Overall, highly recommend Uncle Man. Generous portion size, affordable price, authentic flavours, great service and warm welcoming casual atmosphere.
CocoOnFire
Authentic Malaysian meals by Malaysian chefs. Taking my friends here for late dinner, we rang before we arrive to make sure no need to wait as there is always people waiting for table there. Once again never disappointed, my friends all love it. Roti Tissue - light and crispy. Lamb Briyani - tender enough with matching chilli sauce. Roti with curry chicken - their roti is the best in town. Steak - the kids love it. Laksa - I reckon chinese Malaysian makes the best.
Teh Tari - Malaysian milk tea.... love it so much.
My friends already planning to come for all their different kind of roti next time.
Ellynn
I feel like me and my friend can be the official spokesperson of this place. They have the best Malaysian food in Auckland. I usually get the Mee Goreng or the Maggi Goreng. I have also tried their drinks and they were good too. I LOVE this place and recommend this alot.
Yenzi
Food and price are alright. Fried noodles was alright, just bit salty and roti was bit thick and not cook through. Curry chicken was quite disappointing, almost flavorless.
LSnag
My family thoroughly enjoyed the delicious nasi lemak, maggie goreng, roti canai with beef rendang and virgin piña coladas. We will definitely be back!
Dennis Kee
I am Malaysian. I grew up eating Malaysian food and i know how each dish should taste like. I can tell you this cafe serves the most authentic Malaysian food. The chef is a malay. I recommend sticking to malay food like nasi lemak, soto, nasi Ayam, biryani rice, satay and mee goreng. My favourite is nasi Ayam, one of their trademarks. Very friendly staff. Very very reasonably priced, far better value than papa rich. Highly recommended. And for my muslim friends, this is a halal restaurant.
Greg Potter
The food is always great here. Fast service, good value, and friendly staff. I usually get the noodles, which come with chicken, fish ball and prawn
Kho Lidya Merina
Me and some friends had a dinner here. It was lovely.

Foods were delicious (4/5), with comfortable ambient (4/5), the service was great as well the foods didn't take a lot of time to be served (4/5).

Definitely recommended and will come back again , especially for the curry laksa :)
Annie Low
Definitely my favourite spot for Malaysian food! Ultra love their FRIED EGG NOODLES "mee goreng"! Super goooood! So much love for their "teh tarik" too!!!
Clement Loh
Probably the only place in Auckland where I can get roti like that make it in malaysia. Satay is also quite good too and the only place in Auckland so far that makes the traditional rice cubes for it too
Katerina
Finally managed to dine there. No regrets. Came for dinner and it was not busy at all. The food is delish with lot's of flavour . I am giving 4 stars for taste and service only. Its cheap and cherfull. Super simple place with friendly stuff. My laksa was very good. Generous portions that's for sure. Parking can be tricky one as its in K Road
Jeremy W
The best food is always found in the simplest of places. This is definitely one of them. I've heard good reviews through friends about this place so I just had to try it. I ordered the Maggie Mee Goreng and the Mee Rebus as they came highly recommended. Both of them certainly didn't@ disappoint. The Mee Rebus was done perfectly and is as close to the quality found in Malaysia. The gravy was tasty and the green chilli mixed with the noodles certainly brought out the burst of flavours and aroma.

The Maggie Mee Goreng is by far the best one I've had in Auckland period. Others that I've tried were either too oily or were fairly blend in taste. This one had good texture in the noodles, wasn't oily and the spicy flavour was done almost to perfection too. It was a little on the salty side hence why it's "almost perfect".

The teh tarik was perfectly done and was certainly a good size cup compared to other places which charged the same price but in a glass that is half the size.

The place itself has a very simple setting which is very typical of a Malaysian stall back home. Ample seating but the down side of this place, like the rest of the shops on K road is the lack of parking. If lucky, you might be able to score a roadside parking on K road. If not, be prepared to park a little further and hike your way there. It's definitely worth it however.

Fully recommended and deserving of such high rating. 👍🏼👌🏼
MegWantsVeg
Great authentic experience, nice roti canai and noodles. Some adequate vegetarian options available. Parking can be difficult considering the location.
Yvonne Huang
This hidden gem on K road, absolutely authentic Malaysian food with full packs of flavor. I had the seafood curry laksa and I enjoyed it. Will definitely return and try other dishes. Shout out to the friendly staffs and keep up with the good work.
Spencer's Reviews
Pleasant dining experience, booked prior to dining for a work do, had the Sweet and sour sauce and food was served hot and reasonably. Service was very friendly as well.
Bhavya
Ordered their Nasi goreng. It was ok, nothing great. Slightly disappointed as I was expecting better going by the reviews they had previously
Diner8Here
This Malay place is just as popular as Newmarkets Seleras and has the best of 3 worlds of malaysian, chinese and kiwi so bring yer mates who are this, order a dish each and share et. Popular with home sick malays i notice with waitress dressed in traditional tunic. I mistakenly ordered the maggie goreng which is fry egg noodles instead of the kuey teow which is the rice noodles, silly me again, oh and the banana roti is yummy as, see pic..
Got to meet the proprietor too, believe to be the son and is a kind host too, Cheers uncle👏
KBoy
Had a wild munch here at about 3:30pm on a Sunday. Ordered a Nasi Goreng, Chicken curry with roti and a vermicelli noodle soup.
Flavours second to none. Service was top dog and almost no wait time. I blinked and food was on the table. Can not fault it in the slightest. Highly recommended

K' Rd has become foodies heaven and Uncle Man certainly is one to be exited about.

As soon as you walked in, you feel like you stepped into a little corner of KL. Malay speaking staff, bits of Malaysia everywhere and the smell of delicious food being cooked.

Prices are very reasonable and portions are big.ni ordered tskeaways and was ready very quickly. Can't wait to go back to try everything on the menu.
Arvin Raymond Dsouza
The food was flavourful, quick and friendly service and if you crave some good malaysian food - this is one of the place you can go to and have a good meal.
The place is really small and gets busy. So it can be useful if you check with the restaurant, if you have a large group.
Rana El Haddad
Had the best chicken satay ever! Love the rotis and the friendly staff. Definitely the place to go for malaysian food! Portions are big and you get value for money. In just one word, this place is QUALITY!
Hannah
Truly excellent mee goreng and roti. To die for. And very reasonable price. I was recommended this place as being best Malaysian in Auckland and was not disappointed
Ffionachua
I love Malaysian food and uncle man's one of the most authentic places in auckland (apart from the random burger and fries side menu they have... which technically doesn't stray too far from Malaysian food, as 'roadside burgers' are quite a big thing in Malaysia).

I've tried their roti canai, mee goreng, and Rojak mamak, Kway teow, mi hoon soup, and everything has been top notch so far.

The restaurant setting is quite intimate, with a small corner for couples, a few tables for a typical group of 4 and a Long table to fit a big group. Although not flash, the place is quite clean and has a typical Malaysian restaurant/cafe feel to it. Definitely worth a visit!

Vinmanrules
Bang for buck, this place is quite unbeatable if you're looking to eat authentic mayalsaian food. The people were friendly and service was reasonably quick. I recommend the roti chanai.
Debin Sabu
I had a beef randang from this place.
The dish was a bit sweet. Did not taste like the orginal one. The Rotis were really good . The staff were supper friendly . Might go again to this restaurent may be not for the beef randang.
Keith
I love it when you find good Malaysian food in town, and if only I worked in town and could have the pleasure of locking in a regular lunch here like Jason Linnell !
The roti is one of the specialties and there is a good range of menu items with the usual fried rice/noodles, curry chicken etc. Some not as authentic as others but no real complaints about the food.
The only problem I had eating here is fighting with my toddler who wanted to indulge in too much roti!!
Jason Linnell
It's a touch over 12.20pm on a Wednesday working on K'Road...and that means, it's Uncle Man chicken curry and roti day. Locked in the calendar week after week! The roti is hand-made and cooked in front of your (ever bulging) eyes. The curry is fragrant, viscous and just plain delicious.

But there are other days! Nasi Lemak day with the beef rendang is another one to lock in the calendar. All served with friendly smiles and well wishes - thanks UM
Jasmine Tay-Paepae
The best place for roti canai in Auckland. Freshly made, nice and soft. It goes well with the curry chicken too. The nasi ayam is nice too. Service is good as well. It is always busy when we go so make sure you book. Reasonably priced.
LISA NAM
visit them often. nice and tidy restaurant, very fast services and friendly people there! I love their foods! 💕If you want to try REAL Malaysian food then this is the perfect place😎! 👍

First time, here, had the Chicken Biryani. Not that i know much about Biryani, but this was like a deconstructed one, compared to an indian one. Chicken in a lovely curry sauce, fresh side salad, crispy deepfried shallots, and cashews ontop of the chicken, and a upside down bowl of rice.

First up this was a large portion, almost 1/4 chicen, on a big plate, great salad with a typically sweet vinegar dressing. It came with sambal, but more of a chilli sauce, not the belachan, or shrimp/chilli sambal that i have had at the other malasian places i have been to.

However long story short, it was great, chicken, rice, chilli sauce, cashews, deepfried sallots, awesome, all worked well together and for $12.50 or $13.00 great value for money. Shop is unpretentious, but you could taste the love in their food. Looking forward to trying the Roti Canai, looked like it had heaps of butter in the mix.

Definitely going back..

Got recommended here by my friend and holy crap it was delicious. For three people, we ordered a Mee Goreng, Chicken Biryani, Chicken curry Laksa, Roti canai and a mug of teh tarik (Pulled milk tea).
The Mee Goreng was delicious, flavoured very well with spices, however if you do not like oily food then this may not be the option for you. The Chicken curry laksa (which I had) was also nice. I'd of like the chicken more shredded though instead of in chunks. My sister ordered the Chicken Biryani rice-very huge serving- The chicken was very well seasoned and flavourful, definitely should try :D
BUT... the star was definitely the Roti Canai, unlike the usual oily and dense Rotis you see, Uncle Man's version is delectably flakey and chewy. I could definitely eat it for a whole day :D Overall the portion sizes were generous and we all left with our bellies full of amazing cuisine :D
Can't wait to come back and try more!
I'm Hungry
Been here twice in a week. Totally loved the food. Best Malaysian in Auckland. Service and staff are so lovely and super fast. Tried chicken curry, chicken biryani, nasi lemak and seafood laksa. All were awesome!Just adding - have made several trips after - Mee hun goreng, tahu sambhut, kaey twey goreng are very good too
Sajjadur Rafat
my visit at Uncle Man was on a rainy day while I was dying to eat something protein as i needed something very badly. I am a Muslim, so I can't really eat from anywhere and I had to find something Halal to eat every time. When I saw this store and Halal sign, I went in there and ordered Nasi Ayam, which was supposed to be 'chicken rice', what i find out later is just rice and some vegetables and a small portion of chicken. really hated it.
Deen Khan
The food here is good. Roti canai with daal is amazing value for money freshly made roti and flavoursome daal. Service is hit and miss..very cold staff...hence the lower rating..go for the food not the service.
Aldous Wong
I went there three times. Every time l went there l always ordered Chicken Curry with Roti Canai and satays - first time l went there they did give me Chicken Curry with Roti Canai but second time l went there l ordered the same thing satays was good but my chicken curry wasn't even chicken curry l didn't know what the hell is it there wasn't any chicken and it wasn't even chicken curry no meat just a few small square sizes of carrot and potato than l went in third time my chicken curry turned into beef rendang (without even asking me) with roti canai l told myself l will never go back there again

Quiet at 5:30pm on a Tuesday night. Quickly served and friendly waitress. Ordered 3 dishes and 1 to take away $51.50 in total so reasonably priced. Portion quite generous. In terms of taste, it's nice but didn't wow-ed me. We ordered chicken laksa (lacking salt, only few slices of chicken, alot of noodles), briyani rice (generous serving, like the rice and chili sauce, chicken thigh abit too much spices for me), and beef rendang roti canai (rendang again the spice too overwhelming for me but the meat is tender). Highlight for me was actually the roti canai.
JiEun Jenny Kim
Due to the high rating of this place, I was excited to check out this place. However, very disappointing!

Firstly, the food was nothing to be amazed about. I had their laksa which was the worst! Their char kuey teow was less than average. At least the satay chicken and banana split was decent enough to eat.

Secondly, horrible staff. The place was packed and we waited for a seat to be open. Since it was just my boyfriend and myself, it was much easier for us to score a seat than the group of 6 that had come before us. When a space opened up, we sat down but were forced to move because the person we told we were waiting on seats wasn't of "high authority", thus our wait on seats were "invalid". So another 30 minutes we waited.

The whole experience was horrible! And I wish we hadn't wasted our money since the total bill came to $70. May give this place another try but definitely not in the near future.
Debbie Gibson
Best Malaysian food in Auckland! Authentic, delicious and satisfying. Cheap pricing, generous portion size, me and the hubby are regulars (come here once or twice a week) and they never disappoint! Friendly staff, love the warm environment and ambience. It is like being home in Malaysia again. Will definitely return week after week and recommend this place to everyone wanting authentic Malaysian food! Amazing fresh rotis, Mee goreng and the best Briyanis in town!
Fountain Abbey
Awesome 😊 love the food here. It is SO tasty and so well cooked. Just yum. The people are always really friendly too. The roti cani is particularly delicious, and the roti very light.
Vanessa
First time here today. It's a tiny place with very little seating. It's a public holiday and there's alot of people there during lunch time. Food was good. Service speed was average. Ordered the murtabak, chicken laksa noodle, mee rebus, onde onde and a glass of bandung. The mee rebus was spicy and flavourful. The rest was equally as good.
Aiman Iqbal
On fridays, restaurant publish operating hours until 10pm. Arriving at 9.35pm after a long walk, i can't even get a takeaway of fried rice. All they willing to do is noodles dishes which I don't eat.

I have heard good ratings for this restaurant from friends, looks like I'm disappointed this time. Would love to try their food next time I have the time.
José Ignacio Petitpas Ramirez
I been there 3 times, i finally found a good place to eat roti canai with authentic sambal sauce, i love everything from this place, just wish it was bigger, many times i had to only take away cause is always packed due to it populatiry and great customer service. Inshaallah you could open early in the morning to have malay breakfast as well.
Max Freemynd
If you are a foodie looking for an authentic Malay experience then you cannot find better than Uncle Man. It's not a place to impress a date or clients. But if you want amazing flavors for a small budgets then you're in the right place.
Polash Shariful Hasan
Been there for dinner. Halal Malaysian food. Loved their food. Had chicked laksa, wonton, fried rice, sambal squid. Good taste. Reasonable price.

I have walked back and forth past this place for months not going in, but finally did, and wish I had sooner. They have Martabak! One of my most favourite things from Indonesia/Malaysia. This one is Roti Martabak, also they have sardine roti which is to die for. I also got their lamb and feta salad which out does most European places. My mouth is watering just thinking of these things. I will definitely be back for more. Highly recommended.

food quality for cost is definitely worth a visit alone!!!
not the most appealing in terms of looks but great food and quick service make up for it

Uncle Man, one of the few places in Auckland where you can get a decent Roti Canai :) Tucked away in a little shop along Kroad, this tiny store sits less than 50 people and is almost always packed with customers craving some good mamak Malaysian style food. I've been here twice already for dinner and both times I've ordered the roti canai with chicken curry alongside other dishes. The best part about Uncle Man is that you can actually watch the uncle make and flip the roti itself on the hot stove; really reminds me of back home. Now down to business..

Roti Canai with curry: 2 pieces of roti canai with a small bowl of curry chicken; $12.50. Although the price is really steep for such a little amount of curry ( and no dahl), the roti canai itself has the perfect amount of fluffiness and flakiness. My biggest complaint would be the stinginess of the curry size, however a must try if you're wanting to experience authentic roti canai.

Satay chicken: 6 skewers with a generous serving of peanut sauce, some rice cubes, red bawang(onion) and slices of cucumbers ; $12.
Another must try at Uncle Man, they managed to nail the charcoal flavours of the chicken whilst maintaining its moisture. Once again, the only complaint I would have is the small amount of cucumbers and onions it comes with as the chicken does require an aspect of freshness between each bite. STILL, really tasty.

Soto Ayam: Chicken and cubed rice in chicken soup with crispy shallots and beansprouts ($10.50). Another must try at Uncle Mans! This I have no complains in regards to size, and the flavor of the soup paired with shallots , shredded chicken and bite sized rice cubes was perfection! My go to dish if I feel like having something less heavy and oily.

Overall, Uncle Man offers delicious authentic Malaysian food . The shop may not be the most glamorous you'd fine and the prices are slightly high for the servings you get, but everything is made up for by the taste and quality of each meal.

Must try: roti canai with chicken curry AND soto ayam
Michelle Chua
Went there when it was so busy. Lack of staff but the woman that served us was so friendly and I'm happy with her hospitality. I would recommend Uncle Man after Papparich cause I think they are both similar. Gives me the Malaysian feel. And it is also cheaper at uncle man. So yes, love the food!
David Palfreyman
Really good authentic Malaysian. Not a fancy place but boy is the food good. And cheap at the price most of the mains are $12-13 and so delicious. Beware, hot is hot. Suggest you get mild if you're sensitive to spice! I'll definitely be back

First time I had food here was from lantern festival and I really liked their satay so I searched where the shop is. Can't believe I've walked passed the shop many many times but didn't notice it was restaurant there.

I had satay chicken (of course ^.^ ) and roti canai with beef rendang. Satay chicken was really well marinated though they were little burnt. Peanut sauce was thick and yummy! Roti was made fresh to order and the beef rendang was really tasty. I really had good time there. I can't wait to go back and try other dishes!!!

Seafood laksa was so good, I pretty much finished the whole bowl and all the broth. So good for cold weather. Curry puffs was alright, could be tastier. The fried noodle - guay tiew (something I can’t remember full name) was really good.

Amazing Food! Cafeteria Style. Closest to Malaysian taste as I have eaten in NZ.

Service is fast!

Teh Tarik glasses are big, wish they had smaller glasses and charged less for it.
Variety is lacking but I am very happy with the selection!

Food is delicious! Had the fried meehoon and Maggie goreng, tasted amazing. It's also inexpensive and the service is great. Looking forward to trying out more dishes here.

Came here on a rather busy Saturday night - there was barely any space to sit, but some quick thinking managed to get me a table. Understandably, service was a bit slow and they could have paid more attention.

I ordered the chicken biryani since the waitress mentioned this was the most popular dish. A pretty good deal at $13.50, I was quite surprised by what I got - a big portion of chicken in curry with rice, a sauce and a small salad. These went together quite well and I left feeling quite full.

Apart from traditional Malay food, Uncle Man's also serves dishes that lean more towards Chinese and European cuisine. I will be looking forward to trying these the next time I'm in the area.

Lately I've been craving Laksa... So in search for the best Laksa in town, we decided to visit Uncle Man's due to its high rating on Zomato.

To start, we ordered the 2x roti with dhal. The roti was nice and flakey but kind of average. We then ordered 2 chicken curry laksas. My partner really enjoyed his dish and so did I. However, I feel like I've had better laksa from other restaurants in the past. Anyway, I was soooo full by the end of the dish that I literally couldn't stand straight...

All in all, the service was friendly, food was good and prices are cheap and cheerful. Totally happy to visit again.
It's a good outlet for nice Malaysian food at a rather decent price. I'd have marked half a point down for the ambience, but at the prices they have on the menu you can not complain. Food is as you'd expect it. The Roti is made fresh (at least it was on the three occasions I visited them).
The star for me though, is the unmissable desert they do not have mentioned on their menu (they do have a picture of it) - DADAR GULUNG!!! You go to this place, you have to try this sweet little thing. I personally like it a lot and these guys do it to near perfection.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This was my first malaysian food experience and I can say it was really worth it.

I had Nasi Goreng, which is a fried rice with seafood, egg and fried garlic. It was really tasty, altough there were only a few prawns and the egg could be Sunny side up.

The meal is definitely well served, and the price is really good. A good dinner there would cost around $12.

Cheap and cheerful! Dinner for two, for $20.. Doesn't get much better that! Uncle mans is a little hard to spot along the busy main strip of K road but there is a reasonable amount of seating inside.

The service was very minimal, but we wouldn't expect anything else considering the price. The restaurant was quite busy, most tables were full but our meals still arrived quickly.

We ordered to start Tahu Sumbat and the vegetarian Kuay Teow Goreng as our main. The starter was very well portioned, we thought the satay sauce smothering the tofu was delicious. Our main was also well portioned and full of flavour. Both dishes were enough for two people.

Overall we were left full, satisfied and pleased with the price. Great for a quick, cheap meal.

This is a MUST-GO place if you love malaysian/singapore cuisine!! Authentic malaysian style cuisine- tried wat tan hor, char kway teow, mee rebus, mee goreng, assam laksa, roti with curry chicken... none has disappointed. Assam laksa barely had fish pieces in it, but i ate it all up nonetheless because of the great flavour. Sirap bandung drink is my fav! Simply reminds me of eating at hawker centres back home. Most weeks i have a craving to come back!

This place though! We ordered their roti canai, mee goreng, mee rebus, nasi dagang and some other rice dish I didn't really care for. Our waitress, Eira, was so lovely and patient with us. That was something we really appreciated! I've visited many 'authentic' malaysian restaurants within Australia and NZ in the past 10 years and can definitely assure you that Uncle Man is hands down THE RESTAURANT TO VISIT if you're looking for LEGITIMATE, AUTHENTIC MALAYSIAN FOOD here in Auckland. I'd highly recommend their roti canai, mee goreng and mee rebus. Those three dishes completely blew me away. Crispy, fluffy, light and authentic roti canais that are made there and then from scratch, and aren't too oily! Their freshly brewed and grounded kopis are also state of the art, and for an amazing price! We got about 300mls of kopi for $4 - now that's a bargain! Never thought I'd see the day a malaysian restaurant outside of malaysia produce dishes that are almost identical in taste to what you'd expect from a typical hawker store in malaysia. My expectations were frankly non-existent having been let down time and time again by a bunch of so called malaysian restaurants here in Auckland and on the Gold Coast that were, at best, mediocre and could hardly be considered Malaysian! I know right! I feel your pain fellow malaysians. But worry not! uncle man's got your back now! Also thought I'd mention that their staff are polite, customer service oriented and efficient. In terms of hygiene, they are nothing like your typical hawker centre so that obviously is a huge bonus! Who wants stray cats peeing nearby as you enjoy your laksa? Haha, in all seriousness though, GO FORTH AND YOU SHALL HAVE NO REGRETS. PEACE.

I have been meaning to go and visit these guys for food for a while now. Always had snack or just a takeout teh tarik.
I ordered the chicken rice, the dish was quiet big and filled me up just right. The rice had heaps of flavour but in a kinda aromatic subtle style, the chicken was crispy on the outside but found it was liking a bit of flavour, was heavily under seasoned for my liking, (I love salt) the chilli sauce made up for that with a punchy noms flavour buzz. Will be back to try other things.

Cold water, nice price, taste delicious. I ordered Mi Gorang. This is the first time I eat Malaysian food and it is successful. I want to come here again.

My husband took me to this restaurant saying that the roti and chicken curry is the best dish that they offer, I however ordered Me Goreng. I must say both the dishes were the best, I have tired Me Goreng at a lot of different restaurants, but none of them match to Uncle Man's taste or even their food presentation. The chicken curry which came with 2 rotis was absolutely wonderful as well :D I started going here from September 2015, I would love to go here for dinner, but sadly they're closed until 14 January I believe, but will be going back very soon! If you guys love malay food, this place wins the first place! Do check out this restaurant! I must say however they dont have much seating range, (you'll find it in a corner on K'road).

My friend spoke about uncle man's quite a few times knowing that I like eating fluffy and crispy roti. We finally got around to trying it and I was not disappointed. The roti was absolutely delicious, fluffy, crispy and not too oily. I had it with the curry chicken and the bonus was that the chicken was boneless. It's so frustrating and inconvenient getting huge chicken pieces with bones in them so I thoroughly enjoyed the one at uncle man's we also had the satay chicken, the Penang laksa and the chicken laksa. Both the laksa's were slightly small quantity wise and the flavor of the chicken laksa was quite mild which was a shame. The Penang laksa is a strong fish based flavor so if you don't like fish don't order it as the fish flavor really takes over. The chicken satay was absolutely delicious. One of the best that I have had! The prices are quite reasonable and although from the outside it looks like a whole in the wall kind of place, its definitely worth a try.
Travels4Food
This place's chef is a Malay and that isn't commonly found in most Malaysian restaurant. They do make their roti canai the authentic way. Dough flipping and all. So the roti is just like the ones in Malaysia and very flaky just the way I like it. Unfortunately the other half which is the chicken curry is far too salty and not quite the same as when an Indian chef cooks it. But otherwise not too bad. It's a little hole in the wall that does remind you of a classic Malay mamak like it is back in Malaysia
Jo Y
Extremely authentic Malaysian cuisine. I had the seafood laksa and a roti planta. The roti was right up there with the best I've tested, and the Dahl was outstanding. The laksa was really tasty with a reasonable amount of seafood, but a little too many noodles and not as much broth for my liking.
Miss Kiki
This eatery is tucked away on K'Rd and not the easiest to find. We came here on a Tuesday early evening and craving Malaysian food.
We ordered Teh Tarik to drink , Beef Rendang and roti to eat as well as egg gravy noodles.
The best Rendang I have ever had was at a street stall in Penang - this Rendang comes very close. Full of flavour and not shy of spice.
While the roti was beautifully flaky - it was nice to see someone standing there rolling it out fresh and that it is made to order.
The noodles were good too, but in this case the Rendang was yhe better dish.
I am hoping to come back to try the chicken curry.
MikeL
Recommended to everyone. The Rojak Mee and Satay are very authentic Malaysian food. Roti Canai also very good and original. Must try! Best in town!
Zephell
Pretty generous portions, yet our expectations were maybe too high. The roti is freshly made in front of you. Sort of mediocre curry, and only one type. It wasn't spicy at all. The staff didn't crack a single smile the entire time we were there.
TinaS
Disgusting!!! I m really angry at uncle man. They say they open at 1030 so we got here at 1100 with our baby. And the door is closed. There is this guy sitting inside and when we knock the door, he didn't even want to acknowledge us. We stood outside in the rain. I tried calling and took 5mins to answer. And guess what he said? "Oh we are not ready. Come back at 1130". What an appalling service. Will never come back no matter how good the food it is! Don't put up the sign saying you open at 1030 when you don't intend to!

Absolutely amazing Malays Malaysian food. Had nasi tomato with ayam masak merah and Mee Rebus. Authentic flavours that you will get in Malaysia especially in pasar malam. Also tried their taufu sumbat with satay sauce. The proper satay sauce, not those that you add peanut butter to make the sauce (yikes). Definitely recommend this place and also will come back again. Hopefully next time, they have keropok lekor!

Beef Rendang is probably the best I have had in NZ so far. Spectacular. Prices.. Also spectacular.. Location is obscure but who cares cos the curry is spectacular. I would recommend highly.

The best authentic Malaysian restaurant in Auckland cook by real Malays. Perhaps also the best Malaysian restaurant in the whole of New Zealand. It will bring your taste buds straight to Malaysia! Nasi lemak with chicken curry and milo ice :)
Razelle Icaro
One of the best Malaysian restaurants I've been to so far! I ordered Med Goreng and it had rich flavour. Another thing I liked about the service is that they customize the degree of spiciness depending on the customer's preferences. Prices were reasonable too, definitely a must try!
Ruby Jilani
You know the roti is fresh as they make it right in front of you! Food is flavoursome especially the dhal with the roti. Portions are small but the prices reflect this. Definitely going back to try some more things but sticking to the Malaysian menu...really don't get the European menu souns like microwaved or deep fried
JJJiiiiAn
Tiny Malaysian restaurant on K road! You can see how The roti was made freshly in front of you. It tasted as good as it looks. Don't be surprised if u find yourself smell like a roti afterwards. Hehe. Btw, The seafood laksa & nasi goreng were just so-so.
Rojas
Great chicken laksa that taste a lot more authentic than most other Malaysian places. Service is friendly with minimal wait time for food, topped of by good quality food. My current "go to place" for laksa.

Fantastic Malaysian Mamak food in central Auckland. They do very delicious ROTI! You can see the chef in action - flipping and turning the roti :)

Our rating based on Roti, Mamak Maggie goreng/Mee goreng and nasi goreng (fried rice):
Taste: 4.5/5
Flavour: 5/5
Authenticity: 5/5

P/S: I think their spiciness level is much higher than other restaurants. I recalled that I had their medium spicy noodles the last time and it ruined my meal because it was overly spicy for me ( I usually can handle up to medium). So just be warned. :)

****
3rd time here
This evening we had a group of 13 people. As usual, everyone enjoyed the food here. Roti is as good as always. They had Mee Bandung on special today - really authentic and yum. My Maggie goreng is perfect today (ordered non spicy)! :)

If you're after good authentic Malaysian food, and don't mind a simple/humble ambiance...Uncle Man is your answer!
Mary Underwood
It's nice to find an authentic restaurant and to be able to see the food being made in front of you. Ordered the beef redang and roti. Roti very large and crispy.
Iced milo not quite the same as singapore. Warm glass and not blended might pay to chill the glass?.
I'd love to try the different meals on offer and will be back. I would have rated higher but overall service let it down. Was barely full when I was there yet someone who came in after us has his food before us.

Being from Malaysia, I'm always looking for the best Malaysian restaurant. As there are many styles of cooking a similar dish due to the cultural diversity, it is quite hard to find a restaurant that matches your idea of home.

When you walk into this place, you know you are in a Malaysian restaurant as you can see the Malaysia flag flying proudly and they also have up on the wall all the different State flags :)

This place is famous for the roti canai and other roti varieties served in mamak stalls back home, such as roti telur (egg), roti bawang (onion) and my favourite - roti planta (margarine). They even have roti tisu which is a thin cone shaped roti and roti banana! They are all freshly made and flipped behind a glass counter by this one man. This is different compared to lots of malaysian restaurants that serve frozen roti for the same price. The roti is served with choices of dahl, curry chicken or beef rendang. The beef rendang tasted slightly burnt but I would say they were all pretty good!

Then I ordered my staple - maggi goreng and teh o ais limau, which I must admit were disappointing. The teh o ais limau (Ais Lemon Tea) was way too syrupy, which made it taste like sugar water and the lemon (which should have been a lime to be authentic) had no flavour. The maggi goreng was a generous serving and tasty but was just not made the same like home.

The other dishes we had - Mee Rebus and Seafood laksa were all very authentic and tasty though, not forgetting the teh tarik (pulled tea)!

Even though my usual dishes were not the best, I still highly rate this place because to me, it still feels authentic. Plus, I think it is a Malay chef, hence I think they will make authentic Malay cuisine (like the mee rebus!).
Next time if I do go, I'll probably make a point to try Malay food like Satay, Nasi Lemak, Soto Ayam, Mee Hoon goreng and they even have onde onde (coconut dessert with palm sugar). Yummy! :)

I enjoyed eating here. The kuey teow fried noodles weren't bad, but they're different to what I'm used to. The texture was sort of like scrambled egg with noodle, with a hint of sweetness/chilli in the way that a pad thai is a little bit sweet. The chicken laksa was good; a generous serving of noodles and soup with nice garnishings (fried tofu, half a hard boiled egg, and bean sprouts). For $11.50 per dish, it's not bad for town prices. I'm impressed with the authenticity of this place; it's great to see roti being flipped behind the counter. Hoping to come back soon; the rendang on our neighbours' table gave me food envy and the roti chanai looks delicious.

REVISIT:
Finding a few of the fried noodle dishes lacking in that hot charred flavour but the nasi goreng is delicious. The sour penang laksa noodle soup is also quite nice for a change. Milo milk was a bit expensive - at $4 a glass, there is way too much ice and not enough liquid.

Warisan is the Malay word for heritage. And it’s pronounced Uncle ‘Mahn’. Uncle (or pakcik in Malay) Man’s is a Malaysian restaurant serving up traditional Malaysian food, plus some extras on busy K-Road. Unlike most (if not all) Malaysian restaurants in Auckland, Warisan Uncle Man’s is run by Malays, so the Malay cuisine here is expected to be top notch.

The rojak mamak ($12) comes with noodles, tofu, potato, prawn fritter, coconut fritter, boiled egg, cucumber and bean sprouts smothered with peanut sauce. I was disappointed with this. I have never seen noodles in a rojak mamak, and the texture combination tasted wrong. The dish was too wet, and the prawn fritter was really battered prawn, instead of a traditional crispy fritter with unshelled school prawns. The saving grace was the delicious peanut sauce.

The roti canai here is made to order. I noticed that the roti dough is quite dry, they don’t use much oil to spread out the dough, and the dough is not stretched very thinly. While the flavour was there, the roti canai is not flakey, and is a bit stodgy. The dhal had good flavours.

The satay ayam (chicken), which were served with ketupat (cubed rice), onion, cucumber and a piquant peanut sauce was delicious. I have missed having ketupat, which is a traditional side dish with satay. The chicken satay was tender, full of lemongrass and turmeric flavour and chargrilled to perfection.

The special of the day was lontong ayam ($12). This is soto ayam with ketupat (cubed rice). I really enjoyed the taste of the soto ayam soup, fragrant with spices (turmeric, lemongrass, galangal) and thickened with coconut cream.

The mee hoon goreng ($11.50) is a huge plate of vermicelli fried with egg, prawns fish balls and chicken. This was spicy, a bit too spicy for me.

The chicken nyonya curry laksa ($11.50) tasted okay. I’m not a fan of curry laksa, though the broth flavour is good.

The teh tarik was done very well, a good balance of tea, milk and froth.

We rounded off our meal with a roti tisu ($7), a tower of crispy roti brushed with butter and sprinkled with sugar. Roti tisu is eaten with sweetened condensed milk. The thicker roti works well for roti tissue.

Food in the restaurant is authentic Malaysian, will definitely be back to try they other dishes. Price is reasonable as well. The only down side it there service was a little slow and kopi tarik was below par.
Ryan
Authentic Malaysian. Laksa was really good, also ordered some roti - handmade right in front of you. Good sign of a decent Malaysian place. Roti really flaky and buttery. Prices are very good and service friendly. A local for us.
Candii Cao
A very busy small restaurant with delicious food. We had two adults and two children and we ordered several dishes between us. My favourite was the lamb satay and the roti dishes. We saw the chef making the roti and I knew the roti would be fresh and crispy.

Uncle Man is a small restaurant, and run with the whole family involved including the help of their Uncle who you’ll easily spot as the man making fresh, flying roti next to the cashier/kitchen.
The menu has Malaysian as well as European and Chinese style options. This review might be a liiiiiittle biased as my friend is the family behind this restaurant but I kid you not, it's pretty darn good.

We ordered a few dishes but the highlights for me was the Satay Ayam- 6 chicken satay skewers with cubed rice, cucumber, onions and peanut sauce ($12.00). The satay sauce was addicting as all satay sauces are. It’s the kind of sauce you should be bringing a tub with you everywhere to add to everything you eat. The cubed rice was… interesting…

The part I was looking forward to the most: Roti Canai- plain roti served with dhal curry($7.50). Soft tissues of roti freshly made to order with a full view of it flying through the air like pizza dough. They have a small list dedicated for their Roti. My friend took a dessert roti home and we were extremely stuffed but it smelled so tantalisingly good, I was full of regrets. Of not being able to eat it, that is!

Sarah Reynolds #challenge

Being a Malaysian myself, I believe that Uncle man's is one of the few places that makes good Malaysian cuisine. It is the closest you will ever get to the original Malaysian food here in Auckland. We actually had a chat with the owner who is also Malaysian and he is very polite and friendly. I recommend ordering the roti tissue if you're thinking of trying it out.
Mat Randomplay
Highlight for me.here os the roti which is make live and direct in front of you. The freshest. Nasi lemak is my fave, although admittedly I haven't tried too many others around town. Great daily lunch specials. They were a bit slow when they opened but seem to have sorted that out now.
Zac Suvalko
My Good Malaysian friend Dan took me here for lunch today, Have to say I was super impressed, If your a Roti fan this is definitely the place to go, as the Roti are made fresh to order and you can see the whole experience. I go the Roti with the Chicken Curry on the side and was a perfect meal for a winter warmer!

Came in not knowing what to expect. Ordered a mee goreng and family ordered nasi lemak and found it was quite authentic with real flavours. Service was good and they understood our vegan requests as my mum is a vegan. Overall, a good place if you want to eat tasty and not to mention very generous portions that are at a good price.

I've often heard of people raving about Uncle Man but, if my friend hadn't dragged me to this place, I don't think I would have ever found it by myself!

The interior is cosy and clean. I'm told that service is usually quite slow but our food is quick to arrive.

I ordered a nasi ayam while my friend ordered the beef randang. My chicken rice was full of savoury goodness and while the grilled chicken was tender and flavoursome. The accompanying soup looked quite oily but was actually quite nice and refreshing. My only criticism is that I felt that the side salad didn't quite fit in with the rest of the dish.

Cheap, delicious, fast service, friendly staff... It's a poor mans rich hotel... All the soups mains starters are very tasty...nice place for food lovers with Malaysian Cuisines..

Recommended by friend to try the Roti Canai and Roti Tissue. Really enjoyed both of them.

Customer Service: 6.5/10
Food: 7/10

Atmosphere: 6/10

Date: April 2015

I am from Malaysia. If you are looking for authentic Malaysian roti canai, Uncle Man is your right choice. Roti here is made in front of you in the shop. Roti canai is served in two pieces and with dhal. With some extra charge you can either enjoy curry chicken or beef rendang (a kind of very tasty beef cooked in dark brown dry curry). If you prefer something difference try roti planta or roti tissue (a very thin type of roti make to stand up in a cone shape usually served with condensed milk).
Their mee goreng (fried noodle) is very good too. If you want to challenge your taste bud, ask for "pedas" (spicy!). Must not leave Uncle Man without trying the Teh Tarik (tea).

Edit 9/8/15 - Ate here for dinner tonight but will have to lower my initial 5 star rating. While I do have a soft spot for this place and still one of my favourite Malaysian restaurants, objectively we didn't have the best experience tonight. We ordered Roti and Mee Goreng. It was a busy night and we waited about 15-20 minutes for food (this was fine), however the Mee Goreng came out first, we then waited another 15-20 minutes for the Roti, so long in fact that we had finished the Mee Goreng. We watched while the Roti sat on the counter for around 5 minutes, we actually had to point out to the waitress that it was there and we were waiting for it. She wasn't rude but we didn't even get a sorry. Understand it was busy and typical asian style service where sometimes meals come out at different times, but my partner had finished his meal and was waiting for awhile before I even got mine. It put me off a bit.

Excellent authentic Malay food in Auckland, reading the reviews below of fresh made roti - we were not disappointed. We didn't speak for a good few minutes after receiving our dishes (a good sign!)... inhaling the sweet and spicy laksa broth and buttery roti, we could not get enough.

Definitely a hidden gem, great prices, no fuss, good quality food. When are we going back??

p.s coming from a family with malay background and used to home cooking, this hit the mark - 5 stars well deserved

Honestly, some of the best restaurants are in places you'd probably never think off. I've had Malaysian food before but man, this place blew me away. What it lacks in decor and presentation it certainly makes up for it in taste. Ordered the beef rendang and mee-goreng. wow what a treat that was. Don't let their menu confuse you with its Malay, European and Chinese dishes. Stick with the Malaysian side of the menu and you're all good.
Annette Wong
Their roti canai is really something to brag about. Its made FRESH (not frozen and heated like many places do). I love their concept of specialty desserts and I favour their durian and sticky rice hot pudding. Great casual dining experience tucked away in the CBD

Here is the best Roti canai in Auckland, the one and only one.....we love it as the roti is never oily....outstanding service each time. We had the satay and I must say the satay chicken was moist, generous and succulent, definitely grilled to perfection on the charcoal grill.... with the best sambal satay......we have not tested satay so good in a long long time in Auckland. Keep the good work Eddy and the team!
Amit Tripuraneni
Hidden gem on K road. Their sambal is lip smackingly delicious with the perfect combination of hotness and sweetness. The roti is made fresh and goes great with their dhaal or chicken curry. Only took away half a point as couple of pieces of prawn didn't have their black vein removed but they still tasted great. Teh Tarik (Pulled tea) comes in a humongous serving and tastes just right - not too sweet. It's become one of my regular haunts now.
Katherine Witchman
Excellent meal! Amazing to see the roti being made on front of us and great entertainment for the kids. Everything from the satay to the Coconut Rice with Rendang was beautiful. Normally I would be skeptical with other menus being available (European, Chinese) but it also means there is something for everyone and young kids can be catered for easily. A reasonably priced cafe with authentic Malay food. We will be back!
Daniel Power
Most Malaysian restaurants outside of Malaysia are 'Malaysian Chinese' cuisine. Uncle Man is authentic 'Malaysian Malay' cuisine which is rare, and they've nailed it!

Taste: 5/5 most authentic beef rendang you will find. Hand made roti, a very rare authentic tasting experience (most Malaysian restaurants here serve frozen roti which is far inferior). Mi goreng also very authentic.
Decor/Ambience: 3/5 pretty basic. What you'd expect for a cheap eat on K'road
Value: 4/5 Great portions and value for money
Overall: 5/5 Fantastic food for a great price. Uncle Man is a must eat cheap eat if there ever was one!

Tips: For even better value, come and try their lunch specials, which is a different meal each day of the week for only $9.90

Tip #2: MUST try their Roti and curry, undisputedly the best in Auckland!!

Saw this place by chance and was a little apprehensive given they do chinese, malaysian and european food. Service was relaxed and friendly, we ordered the Penang Laksa and Nasi Lemak w beef rendang, teh halia (ginger tea) and milo ais (iced milo). Food came really quickly and was delicious. Rendang was tender and the sambal was good, ikan bilis (little friend anchovy things) were crispy n salty.the way thwy should be. Laksa was good, theres not a heap of fish or mint and vietnamese mint but its still really tasty. Drinks were also good, added bonus was that they werent crazy sweet as malaysian style drinks often are. Cheap and cheerful, our bill totalled $33 for two!

Awesome char kuey teow and roti. Nice and spicy char kuey teow and the roti is super light and puffy. Defo will go back! Really authentic as well

An unexpected and great find! :) When I first read about this place on Zomato, I was wondering how on earth I had managed to miss a Malaysian restaurant within such close proximity of Sri Pinang. Turns out they're not in a standard shop, but hidden in a small alcove with a narrow entrance.

Stepping into Uncle Man brought back nostalgic memories of 'mamak' haunts back in Malaysia. They even have a roti canai prep area by the counter, where you can see the 'Uncle' flipping the roti around. We went all out and ordered more than we probably should've for two people - nasi lemak with chicken curry ($12.50), murtabak ($11.00), and roti planta ($5.00). I would've gone for the keropok lekor too if it had been available - sadly it seems to have been removed in the new menu.

The nasi lemak was pretty good - fragrant coconut rice with all the right condiments and good sambal. I wasn't a fan of the chicken curry that accompanied it, though, as the curry was too mild for my taste and I prefer bone-in chicken pieces. The murtabak - a type of roti stuffed with meat and onion - was decent, and very filling. And I loved the roti planta - roti canai with sugar and 'planta' (a type of butter) in it. I was quite impressed by how it still maintained the distinct taste of roti planta while being less greasy than the ones back home. The dhal curry that accompanied both the murtabak and the roti was excellent too, just the right taste and consistency.

Would definitely return to try their other dishes. Also, as an honourable side mention, their teh tarik (pulled milk tea, $4.00) is among the best I've had in New Zealand.

Roti is really good! Made right in front of diners. The char kway teow was really salty though.

I popped into Uncle Man's on my lunch break and tried the Thursday special, which was Nasi Lemak. The person at the front counter was friendly and provided me with the Wifi password when asked (she entered it into my phone)

While it took a while to get the food, which is not ideal over a 1/2 hour lunch, the food was hot and tasty, and the plate was a beautiful representation of Malaysian cuisine. You could tell the food was fresh and had just come out of the kitchen

I would definitely return to try some more dishes on the menu, but this time I would allocate more time to enjoy!

Another good Malaysian restaurant to visit. Loved the hospitality and simplicity of it. Coming from Malaysia, I crave good home food and rest assured, I get my Malay dishes here tasting oh so good!

We went along to try this place out after reading a review about it online. The four of us tried quite a few dishes on the menu including the roti canai (with dhal) which we really enjoyed. You can watch the chef make it which is all part of the experience, and it is definitely a superior product to the frozen/reheated ones that a lot of Malaysian restaurants in Auckland use. One person tried the mee rebus which she said was very nice, although a little on the sweet side for her. Another had the Johor laksa (a special) which was tangy, though quite fishy (quite similar to an Assam laksa). Another of our group had the nasi lemak which he enjoyed - the sambal was flavourful and spicy. I had the char kuay teow which was a bit disappointing - I found it quite sweet and lacking the "wok hei" which you would expect in this noodle dish. Even though we were full, we decided to try the roti tissue as we have not seen this at other places in Auckland. We really enjoyed this and were glad to have ordered it - it was crispy, light and sweet, drizzled in condensed milk.
The service was friendly, although a bit slow - the food took a while to come and they did forget my teh tarik and had to be reminded.
This is an authentic Malaysian restaurant (coming from a group of Malaysian Chinese people) and the roti, whether it be the savoury or sweet version, is a must try (although if you have a sweet tooth, I really recommend the roti tissue!). Next time I will give the char kuay teow a miss and just get the roti.

I had been to Uncle Man today and tried their mee rebus, teh tarik (pulled tea) and satay. They are tasty and would definitely come back to Uncle Man next time. Great and polite staff too. Highly recommend this place to other Malaysian food fans.

When I heard through the grapevine that Uncle Man makes roti canai to order, I just had to give this place a go, though I am generally suspicious of places that sell food from a multitude of cuisines, in this case Malaysian and European (think spaghetti bolognaise, fish and chips, salt and pepper squid).

We stuck to the Malaysian options, and really enjoyed the watching the roti being made, as well as eating the layered bread afterwards. The flavour and texture of this were more than acceptable, though it seemed less oily than the roti canai we have had elsewhere (I suppose that makes it more healthy). The flavour of the chicken curry was also good, but we would have preferred more of a gravy, with fewer chunks of meat. Unfortunately, the curry was clearly reheated in the microwave, and not very thoroughly warmed either.

This place should have the guy making rotis at the window out the front, so passers-by can also enjoy the spectacle, and keep a pot of curry on the stove. But hey, it's still new - we are looking forward to returning to try a few more items.
