Review Mamak Malaysian Restaurant - Auckland Central

Love love love this place authentic, delicious Malaysian food. The best option is to get some small plates and one big plate and try a little bit of everything. So much flavor. The staff was very nice and food came quickly and was fresh. Definitely worth a stop in Auckland!

CURRY CHICKEN NOODLE - A must have dish here. Served in a massive bowl, full of flavour, veges and heaps of chicken within. This is a flavour punching delicious curry Noodle dish. You must have this here. Sambal chickens flavour was good, but was very diluted, hence would recommend a skip on it The staff were friendly. The environment is a bit out dated, but it still is a delicious dining experience so you forget about the environment. Will be back again!

A simple Malaysian restaurant with choices of authentic Malaysian dishes. I enjoyed their Char Kway Teow and the chicken bites. Also, their teh ais was icy cold—perfect for hot weather!

I ordered roti canai, but it tastes really different to Malaysia, the roti is too thick. Hmm

I had dinner here with my family, we were so satisfied with the yummy Malaysian food . Portions are big real value for the price . Staff was friendly. We’ll definitely return to Mamak.

Fast delivery of of food to the table. Everything was tasty especially the Satay and sauce. Discount for cash was a bonus. Atmosphere a little noisy and lacklustre but makes up for it with everything else. Well worth the stop if in central Melbourne.

For tapas, I would recommend trying soft shell crabs and sambar fish balls and for mains Seafood laksa & Nasi Lemak. For drinks, you have to try the Malaysian coffee (kopi).

I’ve been coming to this place since 2015 and still have the same quality and taste of food since then. This place can easily be jampack. Luckly when we went its not that busy. They have quick service and staff are nice. Food is always superb!

Best laksa in Auckland. Chicken is cooked perfectly and the food is hot. The chicken noodles are super yum as well. Great prices and genuinely good food. I go here almost weekly. It’s got the hole in the wall vibe but is clean and great service. Small but fantastic! This review has made me decide to go tonight.

I had the chicken curry and it was delicious. Photo is of my colleague's laksa. Can't wait to go back and try something else. Reasonably priced for the CBD too.

Came here for the Laksa. Pros- big portion. Can be shared for 2. Seafood laksa is the same price of chicken. Good value for money Cons- the laksa is a little bland. I have expected more considering people have been raving about it. Overall: would i return back for Laksa? Probably not. I would probably check some other options

Serving sizes are pretty big here (I managed to have half for lunch and the other half for dinner) and the food is good. Service is quick and staff are friendly.

Best Malaysian food ever. Must have a visit if you’re in Auckland. Friendly customer service. No reserved parking for customers but has off road parking available near by. Big portions of food per plate. Has indoor and outdoor tables to enjoy food. Highly recommended. :)

Ordered via Menulog for pick up. Got a Nasi Lemak with Beef Rendang and a Seafood Laksa. I would happily say it's the best Laksa I've had in New Zealand. It was creamy and had the perfect blend of flavours. The noodles were springy and the seafood was fresh and not chewy at all. Never skip on the tofu, these morsels sponge up all the juices for a delicious mouthful. Cannot wait to have it again!

Tried their vegetarian nasi goreng, delicious and spicy. Teh Tarik is a bit too sweet for me. Seating area is limited though.

It is quite tricky to find this place. We had mee goreng mamak and teh tarik. The mee goreng did not look and taste exactly like mee goreng mamak, though it helped to overcome our craving for it. A bit pricy but the portion is big. The teh tarik was good. The staff was good and kind. Highly recommended.

My friend and I came here one evening for a dinner instead of working out. I did not regret it though because this place was yummy. This is not the first time I have been here of course, but it has been a while since because I was trying out a lot of new places. However coming back here feels like coming home.

I ordered mee goreng along with the salt and pepper squid. I forgot what my friend ordered as her main but she also got the malaysian tofu salad - which I devoured without hesitation. It was hot and cold dish at the same time, a little sweet, tangy and salty, with pillowy and crunchy from the peanuts. MY TOTAL FAVOURITE

The mee goreng was a massive portion. I could not finish it all to myself yet I already have a very big appetite. I think the portion would suit at least 2 person setting where they can share food along with other items. This was not a let down at all because for the price I paid, the food was delicious and it was a generous serving that I ended up packing some food for my lunch the next day- WIN!

Everything was nicely seasoned that I couldn't stop eating it until I couldn't breathe anymore, you know what I am sayin' lol. We had alcohol (my pick was a cider) with that which was great because I love alcohol with high carb food, a cheat is always great with another cheat HAHAHA.

Now on to the disappointment - the salt and pepper squid. It was chewy, actually too chewy that it was hard. It felt like my jaws were having a workout, and it was completely forgotten. I never even took it home.

In the past occasions I have been here, I believe I may have ordered the Teh and Milo Ais, Chrysanthemum Tea, and Root Beer - both are yummy but I think my favourite drink with Malaysian food is now cider. Omg I would so transform Malaysian food into bar food. Is that feasible? I don't know.

In terms of food, since it has been a while, I couldn't fully recall exactly what it tasted like. I had their nasi goreng, vegetarian mee goreng, satay chicken and spring rolls. However, none of those occasions left a bad taste to my mouth that I would never go back again. Same with this experience, if I was invited to go and eat there again, I so would. I might try out their sambal beans next time though - remind me. hahaha

If you appreciate the flavour from 'wok', this is the dish you need to try. First time in New Zealand, I tasted 'breath of the wok' in the stir-fried noodle. Just a little pricy.
Emma
Have come here a couple times now and the experience has been consistently great. The side dishes are all great. Presentation is nice and I like the boxes that they come in. The stirfried noodle dishes are all great and come in really big portions. Definitely recommend for sharing too.

I love Malaysian food and really enjoy it every time I come here. The laksa is amazing and so are the curries. The seating area is a bit small but the food definitely covers it! Will return!

Delicious food and good size servings, the curry chicken roti was my favorite. We also ordered the me goreng and sambal chicken which were also very tasty. I like that water was provided free of charge.

I assure you that Mamak has the best ever Mie Goreng noodles in Auckland! Their special sauce is not too strong with just the right amount of seasoning and spices. The prawns are perfectly cooked, not over nor under. The portion size is also very big; even though I eat quite a lot, after finishing this I was quite full. Definitely would recommend to people who have only had instant mie goreng noodles and would like to try a fancy mie goreng dish! :)

Ordered spicy mamak mie goreng for takeaway and it tasted like back home! Ha nice! Sometimes when i want spicy, New Zealand spicy is not spicy. But they make mie goreng really spicy which is an exact what i wanted.
G1k
I've tried the laksa, roti, KTM and nasi goreng but nothing beats their Mee goreng. They have good portion and meals are cheap. I get takeaway often and sometimes dine in. Their beer prices are also cheap. Food is served quickly and service is great.
MCP
Good Malaysian restaurant in chancery! Very nice ambiance, shop also clean! Their nasi lemak is one of the best in town! Their sambal is to die for

Great food and service! Really loved it. Inside was full, me and my friend have to sit outside. The staff was very friendly and turnned the heater on as soon as we seated. I have ordered the Ktm soup, it was the best seafood noodle soup that I have ever had!

Did this place change management? I remember this place being really good, but I hadn’t been here for a while and now it tastes completely different.
The staff were very nice and friendly which was a plus. However my chicken curry with roti was a disappointment. The curry was very oily and had no real kick to it. My roti was very generous in portion, but way too crispy . It was almost like a cracker and not what you’d expect from a roti.
Unfortunately portion size won’t be enough to bring me back to this place.

Tasty malaysian food. We got the beef rendang and mamak noodle. A little bit spicy. Food costed around 15$. You can get free water here. Portion is pretty good. It can get crowded during lunch. Place is quite small, but there are couple of seats inside and outside the restaurant.

I think they may have changed owners/management? The food tastes different now. It does not taste authentic malay anymore - tastes more chinese now?
The mee goreng was not the traditional dry & wok-fried dish, instead it came out wet with sauce. The chicken curry with roti lacked flavour too.
Onto the good points: Service-wise, it was very good. We were served promptly and the food came out fast & portions were large. However, unfortunately we wont be coming back due to the change in the taste of their food.

Quality of food is good, as is price, and if you go when its not busy its pleasant enough. However, tables and chairs are worn and wobbly and with the large group of 9 i went with they simply couldnt manage our order which took over an hour to deliver. Suggest stick with them for takeaway only.
Asianfoodie
Had the KTM soup, roti, and the Nasi Goreng. Portions are always very generous and the flavours are great! Some people may find it a bit salty and the rice noodles for the KTM soup were overcooked so they were too mushy

Ordered the C5 Char Kuay Teow + Mee, it took approx 20mins for the food to arrive at our table, it was very busy on the day but it definitely did not disappoint! It was such a huge portion, it was delicious and overall experience was great! Clean little store and staff are nice.

Always a great meal at Mamak at a reasonable price and good portions. Customer service is also always good. Only thing is that the interior is pretty standard - what you’d expect at a cheap-eat place, and the toilet is a shared one outside that you need to get a key for to use.
Jenny Kim
Ordered the mee goreng and salt & pepper squid.
I’ve had the mee goreng before at Takapuna Mamak, this dish has plenty of squid and sprouts, which makes it worth it.
Also, the portions at Mamak are super generous, I couldn’t finish my meal and I have quite a big appetite too.
It was my first time trying the salt and pepper squid appetiser, the portion was big for this too. The outside batter for the squid was very crispy but the squid itself was very soft and cooked perfectly. - a new favourite for me at Mamak
I enjoyed both dishes but the highlight was the salt & pepper squid!!
(sorry, I was too hungry to get photos 😂)

Best Malaysian food ever. Must have a visit if you’re in Auckland. Friendly customer service. No reserved parking for customers but has off road parking available near by. Big portions of food per plate. Has indoor and outdoor tables to enjoy food. Highly recommended. :)

Ordered curry laksa, fried squid and goreng with my friend. The broth of the laksa is thick but not as rich as the one i've tried anywhere else but the chicken was very tender and tasty. Fried squid is not rubbery and soft to eat, I really love it. And this place is really packed during lunch time so better be early or quite late 😂

Food - 8/10
Ambience - 9/10
Cost - 10/10
Staff - 10/10

Excellent service and delicious food at great prices! I loved my Sambal Chicken, and the Laska was equally good according to my friend. HUGE portion sizes though - took us over an hour to finish!! The dumplings were a bit bland in my opinion, but other than that everything was perfect!

I'm not an expert in Malaysian cuisine, it was my first time eating Malaysian dishes. I absolutely loved it! I had the Mamak mee goreng and the roti curry chicken......DELICIOUS. Both full of flavour. Portion size is good for the price.
Tomo
Simply the best sambal sauce I ever had in Auckland. Tender juicy chicken and gorgeous sambal sauce makes me eat lots of rice. It’s just too good that I could just eat rice with the sauce.
Iimmm
I love all the menu.....

The taste is really nice, but the place too small for me,its not kids friendly ...

But overall its dosen't matter for me ;)

3.5/5 Taste
4/5 Display
4/5 Quantity
3.5/5 Customer Service

Pretty good Malaysian Restaurant in Auckland

Their laksas are one of the best. Perfect soup, big portion and good quality fillings.
Other dishes were not so my style every time I tried them.
I’ll just stick to laksa
#fatlyfe
This place doesn’t disappoint and is definitely worth the mula!!!! I had the chicken curry and roti canai. The roti was massive and was almost like there was 2 pieces rather than one. I did struggle to finish but all that means is I have now sorted lunch for tommorow #winning the chicken curry noodles were also nice but a huge serving again! The meals can almost be shared between two.... cheap date feels

I love Mamak! Seafood Laksa, Tofu Salad, Nasi Goreng (Sometimes Nasi Lemak) with a beer - Sorted! I just want to order more and more because everything tastes great. It’s a small busy little restaurant but there always seems to be a seat available. I also love glowing and bustling little Chancery Square where it’s situated. A definite recommendation if you’re in the mood for Malaysian food.
Heyfoodie
I was wondering about this place since they've got 4.2 rating on zomato and everytime I pass this place by it is so packed. Seafood laksa and Nasi gorang were ordered. Laksa was qutie ok, but I felt like both I orderd were lacking seasoning. Even Laksa has two spicy marks (three was maximum) according to menu, not spicy at all to me. I haven't tried Malaysian style Nasigorang in many places but If I'm craving Malaysan food, I'd definitely choose to go to 'Uncleman restaurant' which is one of my favorite restarantes in Auckland. But if you're looking for something cheap and filling, this place would be perfect.

Central, convenient and bustling.

Those are my first and final thoughts before and after eating here.

First thing I realise is how busy this place is,15 min wait for table, 10 min wait for food. On a normal lunch hour, you should probably come a bit early if you don't want to end up engulfing your food due to time limitations.

Food, it's good, not amazing, not bad, just good. I actually quite like the seafood laksa I ordered, except they didn't use rice noodles, only the egg noodles. That was a bit of a shame but it tasted ok.

Otherwise I can't really complain or rave about this place, it's an option to eat if you're in town and you want some Malaysian for lunch, just be prepared for a wait, it gets really busy here.

This is one of my favourite restaurants as I have been here few times. They serve delicious food and the place seem to get packed very fast. My favour dishes from them were the sambal chicken on rice. The sambal was very fragrant and not very spicy. The portion size us generous and their laksa is something that definitely needs to be tried it was so yummy.

Best Mie goreng & Laksa Malaysian restaurant in town. Everything is just perfectly cooked & seasoned. The portion is very generous too. I also ordered rhe salt & pepper squid which is also nice. Service is fast and staff are super friendly. Highly recommended!
Rachel
Their menu is not extensive but they do decent malaysian here. Fast service, big portion and sometime thats all you ask for. They get very busy at lunch time though so get there early!

Called to make a phone order, they said 10 minutes it took 30. then they charged me extra for additional extra I made to my order then didn't even add it in. Useless
Kicky
Eat the fried rice noodle, the presentation is good, tidy but the taste is not my favorite. I would say the sambal only taste better. However the host is good and crowded during lunch time.
Jack C
For years I have come to this restaurant just to satisfy my craving for one thing.

Nasi Goreng!

And for years, the taste have not changed at all. It is still in my opinion THE BEST fried rice anywhere in New Zealand.

Of course the other menu items are also good. I just love my fried rice a bit more. For a mere 14 dollars, you get a plate piled with enough fried rice to make you go wow. The fried egg on top is just a great touch to make it visually appealing.

Other killer combo is their Roti paired with Chicken Curry. Absolutely delicious.

16 June 2018, hard to find here,
My husband order Mamak mi goreng, he give 3 star.
I order KTM soup , which is the only non-spicy meal show on the menu. I say very delicious , may be is because I'm too tired after walking around in the city, finally get a meal, everything taste delicious.
May be come again to taste the other meal.
Just one things, we ask the staff where the toilet, they give us a key, walk out turn left , touch the sensor then the door open.
Sehaj Mehra
If you aren't Asian but would still love to explore the flavours of savoury with sweetness and mild hotness, this is the place to go. Quick service and helpful staff. They will guide you on what to order and how to go about it. The food isn't spicy at all and is subjective to likeliness.

Mamak always makes my tummy happy! Big portion of food for decent prices. Came here after work for yummy food! Food came from kitchen really quick too.!!!
The Poor Foodie
Very tiny place but their food is a hidden gem!
I’m a big fan of laksa and their seafood laksa is yum! And the price was very friendly also ($14)
Will come back to try other food!

Good enough that we went back the next night. Highlights r sambal squid balls, veg nasi goreng, char kway teow and soft shell crab. Beers r well priced n a nz cider too. Wine a bit expensive tho. Service is a+ friendly, quick and efficient. Outdoor area with patio heaters or indoor. Just a little bit of salt needs to be added to the batter for the soft shell crab and the salt n Pepper calamari and I'd look at changing the accompanying sauce to a sambal or something else salty instead of the sweet chilli. Anyway great size serves, great value and great location. Thanks to all the team for 2 awesome meals! :)

Sadly, I was dissapointed by my visit to Mamak. My food was really lacking seasoning. There was no flavour or salt. The only thing i could taste was oil. I really wanted to like this place but i won't be returning😞.
Shannon
Good place to go if you are looking for something cheap and filling. Food was tasty but very carb heavy and not so much of the good stuff.
Nice atmosphere sitting at the outdoor tables, Chancery was buzzing on a Tuesday night.
Jennifer King
The food was horrible . Roti was so hard, and fried noodle was so oily and salty! It tasted quite different from few years ago! Quite disappointed!
Sandra Judy French
Quick and easy Malaysian food! Had a lunch meal here- stuffed roti telur (onions and egg) with chicken curry and dal, while my friend had chicken curry and rice. Spot on on taste.
Don’t come looking for ambience here, but good Malaysian food that’s easy on the pocket too.
Vivian C
A great experience every time, with extremely quick service, low prices and excellent flavours. Only down side is that indoor seating is a bit cramped.
Mega
Busy! The Veg Meeting Goreng was good, broccoli good, dumplings great. Asian and local beer choices available for $6.50+. Prices were cheap, portions big.
Dxlche
Tucked away near the staircase of Chancery, this little restaurant is a hidden gem of Auckland city. They have a wide range of Malaysian delights and their curry rice never ever lets me down.
Their drinks are extremely reasonably priced here too, around $5 for the mega glasses of milk tea/ milo shown below. I also believe their Heineken is around $6.
Went to this place 2 nights ago, as my favourite Uncle Man's (hands down best and cheapest Malaysian restaurant in Auckland) which I always go to, was closed and I was craving Malaysian food. I must say the high average rating of 4.0 on Zomato and all the good reviews fooled me big time. Like big time. First off service is meagre, the waiters are very quiet and bored and when I asked the waitress for some water, she took my glass but never came back with the water. I ordered mee goreng and teh ais. The teh ais was good, as it was not overly sweet. However the mee goreng was flavourless - the noodles were DROWNED in oil and chilli as a substitute for flavour. I take spicy food but I just felt that they excessively used oil and chilli a a substitute for REAL flavour. Seriously though - they were the oiliest and greasiest noodles I've had in my ENTIRE life! Soaked in oil literally. The portion was quite big too so I ate half and took away the rest, but as I was heading home I felt SO nauseous. I felt nauseous for hours on end, my stomach was churning so bad and so I couldn't sleep until 5am. Because they put TOO MUCH oil in their noodles! Thirdly be informed that this restaurant is very tiny inside, I was seated on a very small table and sitting on the couch/wall side and literally 50cm away from the next person, he bumped into me accidentally when getting up. So if you're coming with friends don't bother as people are literally right next to you so that's awkward in terms of conversations. As someone who has visited Malaysia several times I know what Malaysian food should taste like. Not like this certainly! Please take note and order the mee goreng at Uncle Man's/Angie's Kitchen instead, it's what a mee goreng should taste like - authentic, with flavour and not drowned in so much oil to make you feel sick after eating it!! I've seen other similar reviews about their noodles - so be warned, I advise you not to order their noodles!! I can't speak for the rest, but I can say that their drinks are okay.
Stephanie Tan
Definitely one of my favourite Malaysian restaurants. The food is simple but flavourful. They offer vegan options and accommodate other dietary requirements. The service is good. Prices are quite affordable.

We came here with friends, i had Nasi Lemak - Beef Rendang. A lil bit spicy for me. But still love their food. Big servings and reasonable price.

This place definitely has the best Malaysian food in Auckland! They have a great selection, full of flavour, huge portions and you barely have to wait.

I've been here twice and we have ordered a range of dishes - roti curry chicken, beef randang, curry chicken laksa, mee goreng & chicken satay. I can't say I was disappointed with any of it. The portions are huge so we ended up taking a lot of it away. The flavours and level of spice was amazing.

The only downside is they are often busy and have very limited indoor seating. I'm not a huge fan of sitting outside especially as there is a shisha place next door. You can make reservations though if you are planning on going there.

I would definitely recommend to anyone who hasn't tried 😊😊
Ian Pann
had the vegetarian meegoreng and it was good. nice portion size and was served fast. customer service was good. the noodles was flavoured well, but just found there to be a little bit too much onions in the it
Kevin Wong
Heard about this place few times but never saw it till a mate showed us. It's right down the back and can br easily confused with the Al fresco dinner next door. Food is crazy good and feels very authentic. Roti is off the chain good. Laska is also good, not noramlly a fan of coconut cream curry but this one was one of the better ones. New lunch time eatery found!

A friend told us about this amazing Malaysian restaurant. We ordered so many dishes and really pigged out ! The chicken curry , prawns, fried rice and satay was just to die for . Will definitely revisit on my next trip to Akl

Food:
Excellent portion size, good taste n great value for money.
During our visit we tried the soft shell crab, roti with chicken curry, nasi lemak. Everything was great n the rotis were world class.

Service:
Very attentive n friendly service

Ambience:
The restaurant is nestled in a nice corner of Chancery square with some outdoor seating as well for the smokers. Indoor seating can get a bit cramped up during busy time. But again that's a fun in itself.
I don't think they do reservation but usually the best time is to go around 6 or after 8pm. Lunch is usually busy throughout the day

I M a regular here n one of my fav Malaysian place... only request plz bring back the Roti Tissue dessert
Aimee.
The actual restaurant is quite small with not that many seats. However the food here is authentic. I loved the roti chicken curry- the roti was super fluffy and yum. The nasi goreng was also delicious and full of spices and flavour. However some of the other dishes were quite greasy and oily and didn't taste that great.
Thom
Great homey Malaysian food in the cbd. Place is small but generous food portions, with what i would say is the average price for Malaysian restaurants in Auckland. Personally not impressed at all with their rendang. Side dishes are yummy.
HRS
arguably the best roti curry chicken that taste so much like home made food. the roti canai are soft and light while the chicken curry is full of flavours. the the tarik or chai is delicious and refreshing. it is slightly on the sweeter side so if you don't like your chai sweet then do not try this. this place is perhaps one of the best Malaysian places in Auckland.
Jade0289
Update:

Their Mee goreng is beautiful! Everything of this plate was just perfect! OMG, I couldn't stop eating this after I tried the first bite.

The Nasi goreng was nice too. But it would be better if it had more spicy flavor in it.

The tofu salad was simply deep fried tofu with sweet chilli sauce on it. It wasn't bad but I doubt if we are going to order it again.

My favourite spot when I'm craving Malaysian food!

The space is small and don't expect fancy interior here. But their food is absolutely awesome and the portion is very generous!

This small space was super busy, packed with people. But I really enjoyed dine in here-- made me feel like sitting in Malaysia and enjoying authentic Malaysian food!
Ellynn
I found this place when I first got to Auckland. My mom and I love this place as it has decent prices and portion sizes. I always left this place feeling so full. The beef rendang is always good and the noodles are always delicious.

Love this place! Been here a number of times in the past. As far as cheap eats go, you can't go wrong ($13 - $16 p/main) and large portion sizes.

Had the Mamak Mee Goreng, the dish was nice but could've done with more heat (i asked them to make it hot) but their hot still seemed very mild (i have also experienced this in the past here, so you'll need to ask for extra chilli on the side - be warned, the chilli sauce is a lil. oily). For $14 you're not going to get many prawns as expected, but overall the dish is tasty (baring in mind that for a noodle dish it is quite sweet).

My partner had the chicken curry and although it was little oily and the sauce was somewhat thin, the portion size for this dish is decent (think 3-4 small whole thighs). Overall the flavour was tasty but it could've had a bit more puch.

The place itself is tiny but when we went there were seats available (only outside, so lucky it was a nice day)! The waitress that served us was nice (nothing special) but having been here before i don't expect much from the service anyway (you wouldn't come here for the service, you'd come here because it's value for money).
First time and always look forward coming here, been Malaysian myself. Nasi lemak beef rendang not authentic and taste average , kway teow noodles very oily and deep fried tofu just so so. Staffs are very friendly and attentive. We sat outside with couples of table, the heater was on but the guy staff come and turn it off, presumably must be the owner..mayb to save some bucks..quite disappointed. Have to say the photo's do looks good tho, not worth going all the way to city just to patronize there as it's quite pricey as well.
Jessica Bush
This is my first time to have the dinner there. it's Awesome, I like the Laska that is creamy and cheap in city. I would like to try their roti next time my bf.

Came here for lunch. The experience for the service was pretty good, but the food was below average. We ordered Char Kuay Teow + Mee which is fried noodles, and Nasi Goreng Tom Yam which is fried rice. The noodles tasted quite salty but the prawns were nicely cooked. The fried rice dish was the main disappointment as the overloaded pineapples did not mix well with it - the dish was salty as if the chef dumped a whole lot of soy sauce; it was spicy; and it was sour. It looked tasty when the dish was served because the presentation was appetizing, but the taste was the complete opposite. Also afterwards, my stomach did not agree to the fried rice. $30 for two is ideal.
Taste - 3/10
Size - 8/10
Price - 7/10
Service - 6/10

Came here with a flat mate that think this is the best malaysian restaurant in Auckland. Was skeptical as I have tried a few nice places around Auckland already.
It's not really comparable as they are more of a faster individual style meal compare to other restaurant that I have been to are more ordering dishes and sharing!
I had the char kuey teow + mee which was nice as it had that nice charred taste from a wok. But very cheap on the prawns or meat. Think I had 4 prawns and the rest were just the noodle.
Service was rather crap; normally I don't have expectation for any customer service in an Asian restaurant. But if offer that kind of service at least do a good job.
Had two girls talking loudly in Chinese next to me about how "they were getting too old for going out" while I was only 1m away from them. Asked for chilly paste and never came and just stood there in the same spot and kept on talking.

Food 3/5 meh... good enough for the price, but I can get it almost everywhere in Auckland.
Service: 2/5

Terrible service+average food. Laksa soup base was cold. Told waitress about it and she said OK I'll tell my chef. And never gt back to us again. I'm not happy with that and I will not waste my time to come back again.

I'm basing this review on the last time I ate at mamak and the time before. To give them the benefit of the doubt I've rated a 3 , as the first time was good. Unfortunately the second time all the food was very oily and he noodles were dropping with oil, the nasi goreng was alright though.
ShoRt
Super quick service and they were kind enough to let us sit and eat slowly even though they were about to close.

I ordered the char kueyteow mee and it was quite tasty. However I feel very thirsty afterwards. Generous portion and nice big prawns! Friend ordered the fried rice and looked pretty good too.

Good place to have some Malaysian and enjoy the Chancery vibe.

Very nice food and friendly people. First time tried was very happy. In deed ordered over the phone to pick up. Recently had an accident when i explained my condition that cant take stairs, a very nice girl came with my order to drop it to my car. Very good customer service. Well done.

Tasty food but a little greasy. Fairly large portions and reasonable prices make the meals value for money. Fast and friendly service. Informal stool seating and tables fairly close to each other makebthis a place for a quick meal.

Mamak has been one of my favorite places to eat since discovering it a few years ago and having returned several times, I can say with certainty it offers consistently tasty, authentic Malaysian food.
Food
Char Kuey Tiao is one of my all time favourite dishes and out of all the Auckland eateries I've tried, Mamak is the only one that does it justice. Mamak's version is unique in that it offers a combination of the typical flat rice noodles with a bit of egg noodles as well. It's packed with the usual good stuff - egg, shrimp, etc. and an adjustable level of spice. A surefire winner where you can't go wrong.

Another big winner is the Chicken Laksa which has the perfect blend of cream (coconut) and oil (chilli). It gives you enough bean sprouts, noodles and chopped and boneless chicken. A reliable choice that hasn't failed to impress which also happens to be the best laksa I've tried to date.

Other mains I've tried are Nasi Goreng which while perfectly adequate was hardly memorable (though I don't recall this ever having been the case anywhere); Nasi Lemak Beef Rendang which was good but beef not as tender as I would have liked and the Curry Noodles which were a bit of a letdown.

The appetizers however, were very forgettable. The dumplings were light on the filling and felt like Korean dumplings - thin, crispy skin but empty on the inside. The curry puffs were a bit too starchy and fried chicken not very crispy and juicy. The chicken skewers though were moist and tasty and spring rolls light and delicious.
Ambiance
The place is very cramped and often full but service is extremely quick. It's not as comfortable as other Asian places and the seats are just stools without backrests. Service can vary from acceptable to cold - sometimes I feel they do not appreciate my business.
Overall
Any flaws the restaurant has as a whole are forgotten when digging into the noodles that rest in front of you. Underwhelming appetizers are sort of negated by how filling (and reasonably priced) some of the mains are. There are plenty of things to try on the menu but once you find that main you love, you'll wonder why you'd even want to try anything else and will keep coming back for more.

The roti here is amazing! The chicken curry roti is the fav dish I've tried so far.
The chicken bites were a little disappointing, a lot of fat and coating but not a lot of chicken.
Service is prompt and friendly.

The restaurant is small and doesn't have a huge amount of seating. Come early or get it takeaway.
ANKIT
A beautiful Malay restaurant in chancery square. I m big fan of Malaysian cuisines
Because they are collaborating with Indian dishes that makes them more delicious. I went with my friend
We had chicken laksa & Roti canai bawang that was so delicious.taste of spices were balanced.staff was very friendly.I will surely suggest this place to everyone that like chicken laksa.100% money worth
And I will surely come back : )

I have been to Mamak 4-5 times. Service and quality is not only excellent but consistently excellent which is impressive.

Food arrives quickly even when busy, always piping hot and generous portion sizes. The Sambal Chicken, Roti Chicken Curry and Beef Rendang are some of my recommendations. Very delicious!

The other thing I appreciate is that the dishes are made proper spicy unlike a lot of restaurants who make it 'kiwi spicy'.
Tavita Milford
Their spicy Sambal Chicken is by far my favourite from this restaurant. The first and last time I was here was during mid-semester break in semester 2 last year. Thought it was a good idea to go somewhere fancy for once and came here instead. One of the greatest decisions ever made

I haven't been to mamak for years! But since i read the review by I_like_pickles i was inspired to go there.

Anyway we went there for lunch the other day with a couple of girls from work.. and the food was just as lovely as I remember it. I had the seafood laksa this time because i have not tried their laksa before.. usually I would always get the nasi lemak or their murtabak with dhal..
One of the girls had the nasi lemak with crispy chicken bites, and the other girl had the tofu salad. All of us enjoyed our food!

The laksa was so creamy, although the coconut cream was not too thick. I enjoyed the sambal, it definitely hit the spot. Although it was a hot summer day for spicy soup, i thought it was worth it. I had ice cold teh tarik afterwards and it was delicious!

The only downside is that the place is quite small so make sure you book or come in early. Overall mamak is awesome!! Good value for money, and tasty food! Highly recommended!
Great price, great food and always a go-to place in town for my Malaysian fix. Love the vibes in Chancery - only the outdoor seating sometimes gets a bit cold at winter.
I_like_pickles
In the chancery square is Mamak. This place gets so busy at meal times you have to wait for seating. The restaurant is quite small so you have to wait a while.

Service is pretty quick so you really have to wait on how quick diners are and whether or not they stay and chat after their meal.

They do have some seating outside but the seating area is pretty basic lol. The food is worth the basic seating haha.

Top picks:
Teh tarik beverage.
Roti canai- I loved all the side dips and sauces it comes with.
Nasi lemak- flavoursome with all the sides and condiments
Laksa- thick creamy and tasty soup
Raymond Tiong
I found Mamak a bit pricey for what you end up getting. It used to be one of the top places to go in the CBD for Malaysian food, but now I would much rather go to Papparich.
Gianina Castro
Yummy food BUT in my last order the portion was a lot less than before. I told them about it and they just said no its the same. I asked if they weigh it and they said yes. The lady was quite nice but gave me no explanation (i.e. a decrease in the portions), I had to prod and ask. They didn't even ask to see what they had given me. Such a shame I really like their food.

Went along for a lunch, had soft shell crab which was good, and then Char Kway Teow. was a bit surprised to find round egg style noodles in it with some flat rice noodles making up a small amount.
Having said that it tasted good, and would go back, good food at a cheap price :)
Praneeta
One of the best laksas i may have had. This place should really consider expanding out of that tiny eating area on chancery square. Well presented, delicious and great value for money
Bella Qian
Really loved the place! Saw good reviews on here so decided to give it a shot. Tried the spicy curry chicken and the beef rendang. The curry chicken was amazing! It was filled with flavour and the roti they served with it was out of this world. The beef rendang was watery and bland but the rice they served with it was good. If you go, definitely order something with the roti.

Been wanting to have Malaysian food for a while, so decided to pop in for lunch on a cold rainy day. We were seated quickly, and I must say, the staff were nice and service was efficient. I ordered the Char Kuey Teow, which is a popular stir fried noodle dish in Malaysia. Since I can't eat spicy, I told them to change the spice level to mild. When my food came, it smelled so good and the portion was perfect. The noodles were nice, and there were prawns and meat included, etc. It gets real busy during lunch hour, but Mamak is definitely a place to try!
Brianna
Amazing restaurant or take-away.
Have been a couple of times now and have been absolutely blown away every time.
Staff is wonderful and very into it. When explained dietary needs, they are very hospitable and filled with information about what you can get and what can be altered in the particular meal to suit your desired preference.
Quick service and wonderful pricing with good portion sizes. My meal came within 5-10 minutes fresh and with amazing flavours. I shared an entree of Curry Puffs with a Vegan version of the mee-gorang, a smokey dish with marinated flavoured tofu, lavished with noodles and strides vegetables.
Highly recommend!

A good place to have a quick, nice and tasty Malaysian lunch in the city.
The food is nice (above average) but a little bit more depth in flavour will make their food to another level.
Diner8Here
best of malay, muslim and indian as name means, hear is quite popular in Aussie land with queues out da door and came down here got a table easily to try the soft shell crab entree snack and quite scrumptious indeed to the taste and mild spice.
Roger Dalton
A little disappointed, was expecting alot given the 4 rating, had a beef rendang and my partner ordered the seafood laksa. Beef rendang was nice, but lacked depth of flavour in the curry, also was a little watery. I like mine with a bit more spice. The laksa looked great, again lacked depth. The stock or laksa base lacked the coconut cream flavour that me and my partner are used to compared to a couple of other places i have been to like Selera in New market. Also my partner ordered the Roti, which didnt deliver either. We also had the salt and pepper squit which was lovely tho. Sorry but didnt hit the spot for me and my partner. Service was great tho, quick and helpful.

Previously this restaurant was ran by this Malaysian husband and wife their service and foods were so awesome but when l got back from oversea l went it recently l realised the owner was different the foods were not good and the services bad . I really the old owners who ran this restaurant. They were perfect but these bunch of Chinese are horrible. Foods are bad service is bad.
Jason Fernandez
Dishes are hit or miss. Generous portions and reasonable pricing given the location. The laksa is quite authentic and full of flavour. The murtabak however was a huge dissapointment - boiled tasteless meat devoid of any spicing or flavour.

Service is generally fast and efficient. Certain staff could do with a lesson on basic customer service. It wouldn't hurt to at least acknowledge your customers, greet them with a smile instead of a long and grumpy face.
S Ansari
Awesome Malaysian food! Loved the nasi lemak and the mee goreng. There is a bit of waiting to get a table, depending on what time you are here for a meal. The lunch hour I guess is the busiest. But the food never the less delicious. Good service, friendly staff.
Jeremy W
It's been awhile since I last had lunch here and frankly I'm not sure why it has taken me this long to come back. The food was very tasty and the Roti was freshly made. The dishes were authentically made and service was very fast. I ordered the Mamak Mee Goreng and the Roti together with Teh Tarik. All were done at a good standard.

The only downside of this place would have to be the restaurant size and the amount of seating area. Due to the lack of space inside, seating can be a little tight. There are seatings outdoor but that tends to be quite tightly spaced too.

Overall I would recommend this place if you are after a simple lunch or dinner. The price of the dishes is fairly standard for the CBD and there is a good variety of Malaysian food to choose from. It might be challenging to have a meal here with young children due to the tight spaces.

Certainly recommended. 👍🏼

We had a leaving lunch for one of the crew members and we all had an voracious appetite.

When we came in to the restaurant, we noticed that many of their tables had 'Reserved' signs on them, so we thought the restaurant was fully booked. What we found out, however, was that they just put the sign on the tables to make the place look full. When we asked if the place was booked, we got given a table straight away.

Aside from that puzzling situation, our group loved our dining experience at Mamak. We ordered a chicken curry, satay chicken curry, chicken murtabak and a char kway teow. Our orders took around 10 minutes to come out and our food looked absolutely scrumptious.

Our meals also came in large portions which were packed full of flavour and, to my delight, piping hot.

Showstopper: Murtabak and satay chicken were fantastic.

Overall Grade: B+

Place is small but is always busy and food tastes great, would recommend for a casual lunch. I got the kuey teow and wasnt too oily and good serving size.

I tried the nasi lemak curry chicken and enjoyed every moment of it. The curry chicken was delicious, and the sambal added the extra boost. The portion was very filling. Their fried soft shell crab is definitely recommended
Manic Diner
Dined here last night for the first time. As I entered the restaurant, I was immediately hit with the delicious aroma of spices and sauteed meat - I don't know what was cooking at the time but whatever it was smelled good!! I had the curry chicken noodle which was extremely tasty and full of flavour with just the right amount of heat. The chicken portions were generous and tender. I couldn't finish it..the portions were huge and it was so filling! I saw a waitress whizz by with a Milo dinosaur drink and wished I had ordered one. The restaurant was packed, would have preferred the outdoor seating for space and comfort but my friend was cold so had to tolerate being packed in like sardines indoors. This is clearly a popular establishment for lovers of Malaysian food. Would definitely dine here again but next time, I'm sitting outside and ordering a Milo drink!
Teena
Went there with a group of friends. I ordered the Char Kuay Teow + Mee. Everyone got their food while I waited for another 5 to 10 minutes before I got mine. Appreciated that they apologised for the wait. I was happy to wait thinking that good things got to wait but it wasn't worth the wait. The dish was really salty and tasted quite burnt. I had two bites and just gave it up. Disappointed and definitely would not order this again.
Ridad
Unlike their Takapuna branch, food here was really not that great. However it was the service that was appalling and ruined the experience for me. They get very busy so it seems like the only thing they want from you is to get you out. Won't be going back.
Javier Yebenes
Great place for a quick weekday lunch. Value for money is really good and you will never regret paying too much for what you get.

The restaurant itself is really small and not fancy, but the outdoor seating adds another 7-8 tables to the inside 5-6.

Service was very good and all staff looked after my table very well.

Food was delicious and all portions were generous, it's perfect for a big guy's lunch.

I will be back for sure.

Booked a table for two on saturday night. When we arrived we were seated quickly, the place was buzzing. Seating is not very comfortable and too cozy. We ordered chicken mee goreng (hot) and salt and peoper squid. Food arrived in aboit 10 minutes- the noodles were great but not spicy at all. We did not eat our squid as it was very mushy and almost uncooked inside. No seasoning at all- just tasted like a deep fried mystery.
Reasonably priced and centrally located so that is a plus.

Hands down the best Malaysian restaurant in the heart of city 😉 I come here at least once a week for either dining in or takeout. My favourites here are Chicken Laksa and Roti Curry Chicken 😊The KTM soup is also a must-try for the cold days ❤️ if you want something mild, try the Mamak Nasi Lemak Beef Randang, if you want something spicy, try the Sambal chicken or if you just want some finger foods, order the Soft shell crab and Chicken satay. Of course you can never go wrong with the classic fried rice Nasi Goreng 😄 Mamak also serves very tasty vege dishes and great Malaysian milk tea. Since the ownership changed, the food and customer service is not the same, but they are bouncing back strong. Love love love it here 💓 Highly recommended!!!

I ordered vegetarian mee goreng and I loved what I received. The staff is friendly and the place is nice to dine in. I will definitely visit again when I'm in the region.

Once in a rainy day, I was craving for Malaysian food and tried this restaurant.
The service was good, waitress are friendly, foods was quick, and the taste quite authentics with a good price👍🏼 Definitely will come back.

Great food, decent prices, friendly staff.

Smallish venue.

Half and half indoor outdoor in Chancery.

Had the laksa and curry chicken noodle - rich, flavourful, spicy and the curry chicken had really tender and juicy chicken chunks.

Also had ais coffee - sweet and creamy.

Good value for money although slightly more expensive for malay food.

3.5 Yums

Great cheap eat restaurant! Generous servings, amazing appetisers. Lovely service. Have only been once, it's a bit out of the way from our usual spots (Britomart/Ponsonby)

Very satisfied with serving size, lovely price and good taste. Service is quite warm-hearted. The deep fried tofu dish was very yummy. Did I achieve 140 characters?
I've wanted to dine here for so long and tonight I finally had the chance.

We approached the small eatery and were greeted kindly by the waitress. I ordered the chicken curry with roti and my partner ordered the chicken laksa. We thought my dish was average but still nice. The laksa on the other hand was definitely more enjoyable. It's probably the nicest tasting laksa I've tried thus far.

All in all, Mamak is a nice little place to visit for a quick Malay dinner.
Thegreeats
Cheap, hearty portions, great taste!
Located at the edge of chancery
Very busy and limited seating
Wish they expanded !
Their meigoreng is delicious and it's massive you could almost share between 2
Definitely recommend !
They recently opened another in takapuna as well so if you're in the shore no need to come all the way here :)
Kenzi Yee
Recently came and i must say the food quality has definitely dropped since they changed owners. We ordered their Mamak nasi lemak with beef rendang - it was too watery and not aromatic enough. Also had their curry chicken noodle which was TOO oily and we actually had to ask if we could drain out the oil. And last but not least, we had their roti canai. The roti itself was decent but their dhal was completely tasteless. Would not come back here again.

06-DEC-2015 : Been here a few times over the years and is one of the better Malaysian food places in town. This time I had the Roti Telur Bawang and Chicken Satay. The good part is that the roti is freshly made but the condiments / sauces could be better. The curry sauce was weak and I did not like the dhal mixture. The Satay was nice and could do with more sauce. My friend had the Mee Goreng and he said it was very good.

Come here lunch time on a week day and this place is pumping people in and out. Very popular.
I dined here when it first open and remembered that the food was good, so when I ate here a few weeks ago, I had high expectations.
I ordered the roti canai with chicken curry and mamak mee goreng.
They told us that there will be a 20 min wait for the noodles which we were fine with.
It didn't feel like it took 20min it felt much faster.
The noodles were good, saucy and full of flavour and what you would expect of a well made mamak mee goreng.
The roti canai was ok - the dhal was so watery and bland, I think it's a big mistake putting it on the plate. You can't scoop it up with the roti because it is the same consistency of water. The curry was also ok - I think my opinion of it is not as high as what it would of been if it wasn't for the dhal on the plate.
I would like to try the laksa, but my expectations will be a little bit lower next time.

I think bit over priced place.. Food was very average.. Nothing very special.. Went with frds so it was good time.. They need improve their service for sure...
Benedict Uy
Delicious range of Malaysian food. I found that the batter on the soft shell crab had a nice taste but it got quite soggy. The fried noodle/kweh teow was really nice. The sambal that they had was really good. The best part was the milo dinosaur. Large portions of tasty food which doesn't cost a lot.

I'm a big lover of Malaysian food, especially Laksa and Mamak has not failed me.

Although during dinner hour, Mamak is extremely busy and most of the time you will have to wait for a seat and service can be a little slow. The restaurant is quite small but cozy.

They're portion sizes (especially for laksa) is big and very filling, worth the price. And the food tastes delicious.

William Vilas Boas
Staff need so more training... Two times I came in and finished having something didn't ask for! Really good in the past! I used to share as a good choice to my friends and now I am embarrassed with the low quality! I don't know if the management team has changed, but is not the same!
Food 24/7
MAMAK is definitely the place to go for decent authentic Malaysian food, with friendly staff and reasonable price. We Both ordered Curry chicken Roti $15.50. Generous portion of tender Chicken and mouth watering curry sauce! It came with two pieces of Roti which were cooked perfect !!!! A must go !!!!!

I am sad to say that one of my favorite Malaysian places has be sullied due to an encounter with bad service.

As a regular customer to Mamak, I was suddenly shocked at the rudeness of one of their staff. I kindly asked one of the staff a question about the dish and I got a reply that was both extremely disrespectful and rude. The food here is great and the staff are generally always nice but after this one occasion I do not think I will come back again. It is very important to offer good service in the restaurant industry as both great food and service are needed for a pleasant experience.

This place is super busy! You'd be lucky to get a table without waiting for a while. The place is very small and quite crammed. There is outdoor seating too.

We ordered the spicy soft shell crab for entree. Was amazing! So good! My friend ordered the roti curry chicken and damn, that roti was good! Nice and fluffy. Potatoes were nice too. Would be nice if they were cut a bit smaller. I had the satay chicken rice. Was good. The chicken tasted nice. Had this nice crispy coating over it.

The only downside is, everything on the menu spicy besides like one dish which isn't for you if you're don't like or can't handle spicy food. And also, don't come here when you've got an ulcer in your mouth! Bad idea!! 😂😓

Service wasn't bad considering how busy they were. Food arrived quite quickly. And very good portions.

Overall, would definitely come back -esp with my Malaysian friends as I think they'll like it here. It seems quite authentic to me.

Makanan memang enak 😌🙏🏼
Miss2thfairy
I hardly bother with Malaysian cuisine however this place is quite nice. I have been several times. I believe the pictured dish is the best. Huge portion. Not many areas of seating.
Gemma
This is a great place if you're looking for some spicy, or not so spicy Malaysian food! The dishes are all huge, and only cost around $12 each! You definitely get your moneys worth! I've tried their Mee Goreng, mild, and it comes with egg, prawns and bean sprouts. I've also tried their Nasi Goreng, Nasi lemak (fired rice) which have quite a sweet and sour taste, but i don't mind it. I've had their chicken satay curry. This was nice, but quite spicy for me.
Overall this place sells, cheap, big, tasty malaysian food, but the restuarant is only small, so we normally get seated outside as theres not many seats inside. This can be a hassel in the winter, when its freezing cold outside!
HJ
Tucked away in Chancery lane, right in the heart of the city. Expect to wait for a table during peak times as this place always seems to be busy. We waited for a little while but it was well worth it. The service is good and the staff are relatively friendly despite being rushed off there feet. My partner and I ordered the Malaysian tofu salad entrée and the Vegetarian Nasi goreng main. The main was on the smaller size compared to other Malaysian places we have been too, but was sufficient enough for dinner. The food is really tasty and packed full of flavour. The seating arrangement here isn't the best but is ideal for a small groups. I would happily go back here. This would be great in the summer eating in there out door area. One of our favourite Malaysian places in town!

Craving roti? How about a spicy sambal chicken? Mamak hits all these points and more. Tucked away in its little corner in Chancery, this place always delivers. It's Malaysian done well. Great prompt service makes the most of the lunch rush.

One of the best sambhal chicken I've ever had.
Loved the shrimps, the nasi goreng and the roti canai
The wait was a bit long but worth the time waiting for the quality of food and I wish they open a restaurant so will visit them more.
Drinks are bit expensive Infact more than the food
So better concentrate more on food
The overall experience was truly great
Will love to go there again
Paola Gee
Again, like all of my Mamak visits, I was impressed with the good portions and how quick the food came out. Today we had their char kuay teow, chicken curry roti and the soft shell crabs.

Although the char kuay teow and chicken curry were good, I feel that there could be improvement in the flavour- tasted a bit bland and not as flavoursome compared to the other dishes I had in my last visit. The soft shell crabs however was delicious. There was a lot of meat, the batter was flavoursome and it was cooked well.

I would still return to Mamak thanks to their good portions and relatively good price and ambience but I hope they make some improvements in the flavour department!
FoodLoco
This place is pretty average. There are better Malaysian places in city.
I only go here when I am out with big group of people because a restaurant has nicer ambience than food court.
Pricey, average tasting food.
Hoori
It has once of the best Malaisian food in Auckland and price is very reasonable, the place is small and usually full. I always enjoy having food there , but with having such a bad customer service I'm not happy to go there so often, they didn't give us extra spoon to share one food for two! And the staff are not friendly at all and always in hurry to get your order and don't have time to answer your questions!
Samantha Gemmell
Been wanting to try this place for a while now. We wanted to try the laksa but that was sold out so we ended up getting the roti curry chicken, mamak mee goreng, and fried chicken. The curry chicken and mee goreng came out super fast which was good and flavours were also very nice. Only downside was the fried chicken and tea that was ordered didn't come at all. I also asked for a side of jasmine rice and received coconut rice instead. We then asked about the fried chicken and tea and was told that we didn't order it and that our order had been finished already. We asked for the guy that took our order but apparently he had gone home already....Then 10 mins later he was back serving other tables etc...... Awkward lol!

We got the fried chicken in the end but it was pretty average and the chicken pieces were really dry so we hardly even touched them :/ a little bit disappointing overall to be honest......
Prasath
Small yet a packed joint. Great tasting food. Chicken sambal awesome and truly spicy to my liking. Fast service at a really reasonable price.

Best Malaysian cuisine I've had! Like it soooo much! Four of my friends and me went there for lunch at noon and the seats were all full. We ordered all the cuisines that are recommended on the menu list cos we had no idea which one to pick. Every dishes looked so delicious. As a result, they were all good and worth a try for every one.
I will definitely go here again!
Audrey
I had the fried rice in mamak's recently. To be honest I was quite disappointed in the fried rice as the tastes and vegetables were quite strange and untraditional. The egg was lovely though :) havent had egg like that for ages and i missed it. The tofu was disappointing as the texture was heavy and not quite light as it should be. Overall was a so-so experience.
Maye Elle
I love laksa & definitely see this as one of the top places to go for a laksa
Rojas
Having lived in Malaysia, quality Malaysia food is hard to come by here. Mamak offer one of the best Malaysian options in the CBD. Im a huge fan of their chicken laksa, great combination of favor that isnt too salty mixed with ample servings of chicken and noodles.
Katerina
I love going there for lunches. This small place is always full of people, constantly busy for a good reason . Love their chicken curry and roti, full of flavour dishes. Well priced dishes.
Zoe Huang
Although the restaurant is small and hidden, it’s quite busy at lunch time. All the tables are occupied. My friend ordered Char Kuay Teow ($13.5) with noodle, squid, prawn, egg & beansprout serving on a strip of banana leaf. The dish smelled very nice and the taste was a unique mixture of salty, sweet and spicy. I ordered curry chicken Laksa noodle soup ($13.5). The bowl was as twice big as my face! The chicken was tender and the curry Laksa was milky and not very spicy for me. Both dishes are highly recommended as well as the restaurant.
Annie Ren
Had my first authentic Malaysian cuisine at this place. It is situated at the Chancery and this place is always so busy! Luckily, we only had to wait for a little bit before we got a table for two and fortunately it's inside too! I imagine that it would be really nice to sit outside in summer, but not so much in winter as it was very windy and cold.I have to say I didn't expect much before I tried their food but their Mamak Mee Goreng really blew me away! I've always been a noodle fan and also since this dish got the name "Mamak", I expected it to be one of their most special dishes. The noodle was really tangy, combined with ample prawns and fritters. The sauce was thick and seeped through the noodles. It was really yummy but slightly too salty for me. I also tried the Roti Curry Chicken as I've always thought Roti's an Indian dish. I have to say their roti was thin, crispy on the edges and soft in the middle. It's also got a sweet wheat scent. To compliment the meal, the Teh Tarik is a most-have! As I've mentioned earlier, personally I found their food a bit too salty, so having a nice warm pulled milk tea to compliment with the food was great!Overall, I would want to go back to have their curry puffs and the Nasi Goreng. :)
Josh Law
It's got to be a toss-up between Mamak and KK as the best Malaysian in Auckland. Mamak wins on atmosphere and the soft shelled crab! It is slightly more catered to Europeans, which makes it a comfortable place to eat at.
Jemimah
First tried this place in 2013 and loved it, trying the mee goreng.

Honestly, I have not been back since March due to a few bad experiences. On a couple of occasions, we were put off due to some of the rude new staff.

One time, we had arrived prior to the kitchen closing, and had ordered chicken curry noodles, where the chicken was lukewarm, a put off.
Another time had decided to try their char kway teow and what was given was something else, using rice noodles that would be used for pad Thai as well as egg noodles, not very authentic.

I will give them their curry laksa. Every time we have had it, it's been beautiful, both the chicken and the seafood versions. However, have been put off coming here.
D
I was expecting the Mamak that I'm familiar with from Sydney and Melbourne when I first came here, and this Mamak seems to be more of a mom & pop joint. That of course is not a bad thing, and the food was quite good! Satay chicken skewers were tender and delicious, and while the roti canai dipping curry wasn't as flavourful as I expected, still made for an excellent meal. Will definitely be coming back
Jess Pendergrast
Mamak is authentic Malaysian food that is highly recommended by everyone that goes there. It is located in the cosy Chancery area.

We ordered the roti canai ($11), spicy sambal chicken ($14.50), “Mamak” nasi lemak ($14.50) and a side of garden broccoli ($8) to make the meal a little healthier. The food was incredible, full of flavour and cheap. It’s perfect if you are on a budget, a student or just want some delicious food without spending lots of money.

For dessert we decided to try Teh Tarik ($4) which is a hot Malaysian tea beverage made from black tea and condensed milk. It’s one of my absolute favourite drinks so make sure you try one if you find yourself at Mamak.

Highly recommended – I can’t wait to return again soon to get my tea and Malaysian cuisine fix.

Mamak, which is a word of Tamil origin used in Malaysia to describe the Muslim community whose forebears migrated from South India at least a thousand years ago. Therfore, creating a fusion of Malaysian and Indian style of cooking that is absolutely wonderful.

What a perfect name for this small food place yet packed with foodies in Chancery,Auckland. The name is so well represented that if you are after some good old fashioned, malaysian street food. Then, Mamak is the only place for you. Yes, an authetic malaysian street food style cooking that is just absolutely delicious!

It has been our second time here at Mamak and the food has always been great. There’s a lot of options in the menu but we went for our favorite Nasi Goreng. This time we paired it with the spiced fried Mackerel which was divine. The flavors of the mackerel with spices on it was just appetizing. It had a nice crunch with just the right amount of kick at the end of every bite. The Nasi Goreng has always been an instant favorite when I first tasted it. The whole mixture of the dish is perfect, from the rice to the seafood and mixed veggies. It all comes together creating a great simple dish. They also offer drinks such as “kopi”which is black coffee with condensed milk, very tasty. As well as their popular milk tea that really goes well with their food. This tea can be very sweet though.

The atmosphere here in Mamak is like being in a humble restaurant served with an abundance of homely food that’s just very satisfying. You can just hear the buzz of people chatting and enjoying their food. It’s very unpretentious kind of feel. You just go there mainly to enjoy a heart warming meal full of flavor. And that’s all there is to it.

Authentic Malaysian food! Was recommended to this eatery by several friends and love the food here!

Laksa so good that we each got one 😁

Well priced and I can understand the hype! Best to get on early and each time I've come here restaurant is always full and people lining up outside waiting for the next available table!

Definitely recommend and be back for more 😁

I would have given it a 4, or even higher, if it weren't for the bad-tempered waitress. She was unkind and almost confronting.
I understand that Mamak is a very busy restaurant during lunch times, and that the staff would want to have little interaction as possible with each customers, but when we arrived it was little after 11:30, and there were only two other parties other than us, who'd already ordered. So I don't understand why she couldn't just calmly, and politely address us which I see at all other restaurants.
As more people came in, I noticed that the certain waitress was similarly rude to the other customers, demanding impatiently and putting pressure on them to hurry up. It was a let down, since the other staff looked quite polite and cheerful.
One more thing with the service, since it was my first time there, I wasn't aware that credit cards weren't accepted for prices below $30. Therefore, I had to pay an extra dollar....

Now talking about the food, it was DELICIOUS. I tried the Roti Curry chicken, recommended by many people; the roti was so enjoyable with its fluffy and crunchy texture and the curry chicken was perfect, containing a lot of chicken and potatoes. Absolutely stunning!!
My friend tried the Mamak Mee Goreng (the noodles) which I thought was too sweet and thick, and had a lot of portion.

Overall, I was a little disappointed with the service, but since the roti was so spot-on, I'd love to go back again and try the other rotis.

Highly recommended by a work colleague for almost a year we set out together to sample the goods. A full eatery is a good sign for me but usually if filled with Asians and on this occasion it was not - mainly decked out with local office workers from the area. No worries I thought as we squeezed into a tight corner and ordered laska. Unless you enjoy eating lunch with someone else right up your backside and and another almost touching your left elbow as you scoop to eat...awkward. However I did enjoy the dish and there was plenty of it but once upon a time I worked around K Rd down the road from Sri Pinang and that place still rips my nightie in the laska department tbh. Service was fast. Atmosphere abuzz. Staff eager to get their diners nourished and moved on for other diners. It was by far busier than its neighbouring eateries...It's good and without hyping it up I say you be the judge ?

Finally made it to Mamak after hearing a lot of good things about it. I had a delicious nasi lemak, the crispy little fishes were out of this world good. Super busy on a Friday night, but the staff were efficient and had it all under control. I would totally recommend this place, it's a great cheap option in the city.

Excellent value for money. 2 meals and drinks $35 total..
I had roti chicken curry - very tasty
So good we went back a month later.
Don't expect high level of service. The people are very nice, but rushed off their feet. It's about the food and I'd wholeheartedly recommend it.
Came here for lunch with a group of friends and lucky we came here just before the lunch time rush so we managed to get a table. This place is always full so you really need to be quick! We actually came back twice in a week! We were lucky to get a table every time.

Food was great full of flavour, the only thing that could be improved on is to put more ingredients in their mains. I ordered the chicken laska for the first time and ordered Chicken curry noodles and both were full of flavour, perfect amount of spice but was lacking a bit of ingredients. I had 2-3 pieces of chicken, beans spouts and 2 potatoes. Would be nice if they can add some dry tofu in it too. I felt like I was just eating plain noodles. Other than that there was nothing to fault. The satay chicken sauce for the skewers was on point, could fully eat that as a main with rice. Definitely recommend trying this!

Pricing was real good especially for the location.

Dined with a friend as this place was recommended. I have en egg allergy and I think they would have probably been ok if I just up and died on their floor. Absolutely the worst service I have experienced. Went through all the hoopla to order a dish with rice noodles and it came out with a boiled egg on top. They popped it back to the kitchen (I could see the dish the whole time) a chef left it here for a few minutes, then removed the egg and placed it back for service. Ridiculous. Its not hard to just omit egg from a rice noodle dish. To be honest the flavours were nothing to rave about either. It was OK, you be the judge but do not go if you have an allergy.

The best Malaysian food we've had outside of Malaysia!. We went here on our last night in Auckland - I wish we'd come earlier. The food was fantastic. I had the Nasi Goreng and my husband had Mee Goreng. We were so close to asking the diners next to us if we could just try some of their roti! They didn't look like they were going to finish it!...... We decided not to :(

A friend and I went here for a late lunch around 2pm. We ordered a me goreng to share, soft shelled crab, and an ice teh/milo. The service of the waitress was very fast, friendly and efficient and food came out very quickly after ordering (as there weren't any other people ordering). The me goreng was spicy and very saucy, each bite being more flavoursome than the last. The soft shelled crab was very crunchy and basically melted in the mouth, it was very good. The teh was a great compliment to the food (not too sweet). I highly recommend this place for a bite to eat, if you're looking for good and authentic Malaysian food!

Mamak used to be an amazing authentic Malaysian dining establishment until it was bought over by Chinese owners a few months back. If you have dined there recently you are NOT eating authentic Malaysian cuisine! Their meals are pretty atrocious - their spicy dishes have an overwhelming aroma of hot chilli/oil to cover the lack of taste you should get with noodles. We asked for the char kuey teow without the mee noodles and they told us no because it's traditionally eaten like that (which definitely not true)

If you want authentic Malaysian food, do not go here. It is no longer the place it used to be.
Savio Valladares
One of the best Malaysian food you could find in Auckland, the food is great and so is the service, seating is very limited so always would recommend Take Away but if you're to find a seat its well located in the end of chancery restaurant so not too busy with people moving aroundThe Satay Chicken Skewers are just yumm and the Mamak Nasi Lemak is absolutely worth trying. Pricing is real good for the location and quality of food but I believe they could be bit more generous with portion sizes. PS This place is always busy so be prepared to wait or pre order
Amit Tripuraneni
Service can be hit and miss but the place is always busy on account of the reputation they've built up. Spicy soft shell crab is the bomb and the Nasi Lemak is authentic. Portion sizes are serviceable, so wouldn't consider it value for money. Good to visit for sure.

Been here a couple of times but third time was not third time unlucky. Here's why:Table availability ; GoodWaiter service : Poor, friend ordered fried flat noodles non spicy but order came out as extra spicy. He spent the night picking the chilli off his meal.Food : Was okay until I bit into a small metal nut! It was hidden in the Nasi Lemak I ordered, was lucky I didn't break a tooth or shallow it.Overall : When I presented the said metal nut the response from the cashier was a shrug of the shoulders and an offer of what do you want us to do about it, a replacement meal by chance? No thanks, in the end I didn't pay for the meal but still paid for the drink I had.We think the nut fell off a lid? Wonder who ate the bolt?? Sorry but cannot go back to this place nor recommend it.

I've been going to Mamak for a few years now and every single time I go there it always constantly surprises me how good the food is. Mamak is affordable and tasty. I would recommend this to anyone!

Although it might take a while to get seated most of the time, as they seem to be always busy, it is worth the wait.

Have been here a couple of times for dinner. As the turn over is pretty fast, naturally the food also comes out really fast. The service is very good also.

I loved their curry and roti, but the deep fried tofu was probably not the best I've tried.
Vivek
Food :Good in quality though the quantity is bit less for what you pay for . Everything you try here is especial and different from other Malay restra in and around city.

Staff is really friendly and open to feedback .

Service: Good ( 5-10 minutes or maximum 15 minutes on a super busy day)
Ambiance : Open corridor so its nice for people who love food court styled sitting.

Price: Average

Anybody who loves Asian food and wants to try mild spicy food will enjoy eating here. Please note that dinners can be super busy here so make a booking in advance.

We used to come to Mamak a lot for great Malaysian food, but over the last several months we've just seen the quality of food and service drop from its usual high standard. We've gone back several times thinking it was just a one off and that they would return to cooking great food, unfortunately it continued to disappoint.

They used to be the only place in Auckland that would do an authentic Teh Ais and Ice lemon tea but the drinks we had were less than flavoursome. Their Laksa is watery, tofu overcooked, the softshelled crab has lost the crispiness, and how can an Asian restaurant serve unsavoury rice (gelatinous and watery) and then laugh when told about it?

Yes, you do get a lot for your money, but the quality isn't the same since the change in ownership. We miss you Jeffrey!

How disappointing!!! Made a booking for 8 people. Normally they don't make bookings but for more then 6 people they do. Confirmed twice. Got to the restaurant. My family got there before me and told them that they are too busy and they can ither wait or go somewhere else. The waitress was so incredibly rude! When asked how long we needed to wait she said 'I don't know' despite making a booking and confirming twice! The service was so rude. This is not the first time I've had to deal with this same rude waitress. How embarrassing! Never going to step foot here nore Ewell there be any recommendations to come here

We went based on Metro's Cheap Eats - been to about 10 listed so far. Have enjoyed them all except this one. The food looked nice and at first taste was enjoyable BUT at that very moment the chef (standing about 3 metres away) sniffed up a huge amount of snot and spat it into a rubbish bin beside him. We simply couldn't eat the food after that. I paid the $41.50, told them why we were leaving without eating, they shrugged and we left.

Unsanitary and disgusting!
Laura Hunt
I've been here twice now and I absolutely love it! The food is seriously delicious and you get so much for your money.
I came here for dinner and we managed to get the last seat in the place! Tonight we had the curry puffs, satay chicken and mee goreng. All the dishes were really good and had the perfect amount of spice that didn't ruin the flavour.
I'm keen to go back and try more dishes, everything that came out of the kitchen looked amazing.

If you're a huge fan of Malay food, then Mamak is an excellent place to get your fix. While it's set up for patrons to get a quick meal and get out it's still quite a pleasant resto tucked away in the corner of Chancery Square. Excellent food and great service. (Just one thing to note though and that is that there are no high chairs or kid meal options).

Rating out of 5 (5 being the highest):
Food – 4
Ambience – 4
Presentation – 4
Service – 4
Environment – 4

Popped in for dinner with my partner the other night and we shared a wonderful meal with the best chicken and best squid! Cute atmosphere, lovely staff! Will definitely be returning!

A real favourite and at very reasonable prices. This is a real gem in chancery court. It is always busy so be prepared to wait a few minutes for a seat especially if you are in a group. The wait is quite worth it for the pleasure of Malaysian goodness. They took away the heaters outside with only one at the front. Need those heaters back please on a cool evening otherwise inside would simply be too small.
Louise
My go-to restaurant whenever I'm in town. Quick, cheap and most of all, delicious. I'm a fiend for the Roti Curry Chicken, but my other favourite is the Beef Rendang. This place is always busy for a reason! You may have to wait for a table if you're in a big group, but I usually get a table for 2 straight away.
Paul O
This was excellent. A cold spring evening pre-Vector gig, a seat inside at Mamak, umami-laden salt and pepper squid (sweet chilli sauce a little to sweet), a sambal chicken with a lot of real fresh flavour and some very satisfying Mamak mee goreng. Hard to fault overall. A little less sugar perhaps but pretty darn good.
Update: 2nd visit was a non-starter. Too cold and windy to sit outside. I reckon if you have more seating outside your restaurant than inside, you need to have heaters. In the 10 mins we shivered fruitlessly waiting for our order to be taken, two other outside tables got up and left. Better customer care needed, even at these prices.
Update #3. Back again this time service was very poor. Is it really too much effort to greet customers, rather than just gesture towards a table with surly face? The sambal chicken was very one-dimensional - no depth of flavour like I had experienced in a previous visit.

Love Mamak!
I think the food here is absolutely delicious, the nasi lemak is my favourite and i always find a big crowd at lunch time!
I have also tried the chicken curry with roti about 3 months ago, which was also very delicious!
Neila
Very authentic food even to the orange plates! The Laksa is perfect, slightly spicy which I like. The roti is perfect crunchy and soft on the inside. The drinks are very flavourful.

Is well placed in the heart of the city.

Quite popular amongst students and tourists. Food is relatively good however very limited choices.

Generous meals size and is pocket friendly too.

I'm a big fan of Mamak, would just crave for it every now and then. Went there today with my sisters for lunch and realized they had a changed of ownership. Ordered our favorite dishes and Teh tarik but was VERY disappointed. It just tastes different and no longer authentic like it used to be. Food were very salty and greasy, we ordered HOT Teh tarik and it came out warm-ish. Service was very disappointing as well, the background music and the noise of staff chatting amongst each other behind the counter was too overwhelming. We were wanting to leave in the middle of it because it wasn't a nice atmosphere to be in. Very upset tummies today
Hiral Patel
I went to dine there today, there were no seating available, which was a bummer. My Co-worker and I decided we will get takeaways, food just doesn't taste the same when it isn't on the plate in the restaurant. Still nice, but it would of been better if we dined in :)

I personally don't see the amount of hype around this place, although situated in a nice place, Mamak itself is incredibly crowded in its table placement and a little bit too disorganised for a pleasant meal. I know they might have tried making the place an 'authentic' Malaysian eating experience by doing it this way, but the experience we had in general wasn't too impressive.

Mamak doesn't take reservations for small groups, so if you're planning to make it for lunch, be there at 11:30-11:45 or be prepared to miss out on a seat before waiting an hour or two. I enjoyed the The Tarik (literally translated as 'pulled tea') and Ice Milo (iced hot chocolate) before the mains arrived.

My partner and I ordered one Nasi Lemak with Beef Rendang and one Roti Canai, while two other friends ordered one Char Kuey Teow and Nasi Goreng (of which I tasted a spoonful).

The Nasi Lemak with Beef Rendang in general was alright, but my main criticism is with the Rendang, which was too sweet, dry and chewy. the Roti of the Roti Canai was alright, but the dahls that accompanied it were too lacking in flavour. Of the small amount of Char Kuey Teow that I tasted, it definitely was bland and not authentic.

I would have rated Mamak more highly if it wasn't the feeling of a stomach ache right after having the meal (potentially even slight food poisoning?) that three people of our party of four experienced for the remainder of the day. Not sure if this place was having a bad day due to the hoards of people, as the servers also looked quite stressed, rushed and were uninformative.

All in all, I probably won't be back until I hear at least a handful of comments from my friends that this place has made their list of favourites. I don't recommend coming here if you're looking for authentic food - take it from a Malaysian and Indonesian.
Charissa
Authentic Malaysian place! Good food and can get very busy! Limited space and wish they would expand premises. Good takeaway option and eat at nearby plaza/ garden
Simone Cooper
Cheap and delicious. The laksa is huge and very flavoursome.
Onkar
Great food and authenticity is present. Nice friendly staff and will have a chat with you if they're free. Their tea that is the authentic Malaysian tea is just to die for.

Vegetarian options available upon request.
Rosemary Young
What is the hype around this place? I certainly did not think there was much to rave on about. Food was average, you get better at other places. The roti wasn't as chiffron as people say. The laksa was watery and noodles over cooked. Mee Goreng was dry and noodles slightly rubbery. Were they just having a bad day?
Bettina Tran
Another one of my go to Malaysian place. Love their chicken curry, beef redang, laksa and pulled tea. It's so good but slightly pricey but understandable given the location
Zuber Mohammed
I haven't been here for a while, but i thought i'd post my rating today because the last time i had gone there i was blown away by the food and service.

Went there with 4 of my cousins and we tried 4-5 different dishes, they were all very nice.

Highly recommend their Soft Shell Crab. Try it, you won't regret it!

We came here for dinner a few days ago and both ended up ordering the chicken curry with roti. (I had dhal as well).

The service was quick.

The atmosphere was buzzing and for a second it felt like, I was probably in Malaysia.

The food was delicious and the flavour of the spices was outstanding.

In the past, I have had, what I consider to be among one of the best Laksa's in Auckland here as well.

This was definitely a four star experience.
Merv Lowe
Visited this place 4 times. Consistently good, ingredients are fresh, and the servings are good-sized. Quite an extensive menu, the laksa is spicy without being too hot. The prices of the drinks are reasonable and there is an interesting array to choose from (Volcano Milo being one). Service is efficient; more perfunctory than friendly. On a warm, sunny day; most pleasant to be seated outside. 4.5 Stars

If you searching for an authentic Malaysian restaurant that serves tasty Malaysian Indo-Chinese-Malay food, then Mamak is by far the best that we can recommend. They make real "Roti Chanais". This is a big difference unlike other Malaysian restaurants that we have frequented that just heat up the Kawan Roti Parathas and serve along with the curry.

We tried their Roti Telur as well as Nasi Lemak. Highly recommended and it falls under the cheap to moderate places to eat. They are usually busy and we have consistently encountered unfriendly service.

The second time that we visited we tried their Murtabak with beef filling. The accompanying curry was soaked in oil and the replacement chicken curry was equally soaked in oil. The cabbage dish as well as lentil dish were cold (and seemed like straight out of the refrigerator).

Since the restaurant was closing at 2:30 PM and we (along with others) were still being served - they insisted that they will not take any further orders and were hurrying up to wrap up the afternoon session. Felt uncomfortable as it clearly indicated their business attitude ahead of customer service.

If you would like to try Malaysian food but can bear unfriendly service, you can try this place. I will not be going again.
Lito Banal
Big servings and really good value for your money. I can say that the quality will be average, but definitely a place to be whenever you wanted to have a quick meal. Convenient parking at the basement as well. Just hope the the refurbishment works in the area will be finished soon.
Jamini Pulyadath
I've been to Mamak 3 times now and absolutely love the food here. Mamak was recommended to me by a Malaysian friend who claims the food is very authentic. Love the beef murtabak and the sambal chicken. Have introduced my other friends to this place and they rate it very highly too. The only downside is that they don't take bookings over the phone which is understandable as they're always busy. Only means that we sometimes have to wait for a table but it's totally worth the trouble! Though it's not on the menu, I always order the tissue roti with condensed milk for dessert. It's the only Malaysian place I am aware of that makes it! Overall, highly recommended for a hearty and inexpensive delicious meal in the city.
Keith
Great place, is always busy on any day and patronage is always a good sign. The curry laksa and char kuay teow is great :) My parents are Malaysian and love it. Have been frequenting this place since it has opened. Reason for 4 stars is that it is crammed inside, can be cold outside as the heaters are not always on (but maybe I am just a girl) and often there's a bit of a wait since it's always so busy. Would be great if there was more indoor seating. Some dishes could be improved slightly but not complaining as the majority of dishes are pretty awesome and it's great having such a place to go to in downtown Auckland!!
Bella Donna
I'm a huge Mamak fan, usually end up there once every week or two. I was born and brought up in Malaysia, return there regularly for holidays and the food in Mamak is much better than any meal I had when I was last there. The sambal is fantastic and the roti canai the only roti I've had in Auckland that isn't sickly sweet. I'm a bit addicted to the Nasi Lemak but my partner has had just about everything on the menu from laksa to satay to beef rendang and he loved it all.

Re the owner. I think he's a great guy, if you get speaking to him he's lovely. People maybe expect too much. This is a CHEAP place to eat in the city centre, the only way he can sustain that is by having a busy restaurant and a speedy turnover. I'm not saying rudeness is ever acceptable - I've never found him rude - but you can't expect restaurant service when you're paying $12 for a main course. Really it's an amazing quality fast food outlet. Eat, enjoy and make way for the next customers.

Came here for dinner with a friend last night, not planned (just happened to be passing by) but very glad we did!

There was one mix up of dishes at the beginning (we ordered a range of tapas-styled plates to share and the owner brought out one we didn't order), but the owner was very apologetic and the problem was rectified quickly. All our food was brought promptly and was piping hot and freshly made.

The highlight for me was a dish of meat-substitute morsels (the name escapes me now),wrapped in pandan leaves and fried. The seasoning on this was excellent, and the texture was almost believable as a real minced meat product. I would also highly recommend the salt and pepper squid. The crispy batter enclosed pieces of soft (not rubbery, yay!) squid and was very moreish.

Would definitely come here again. So, so good.
Karen Fernandez
The food is great, esp the freshly made roti is awesome, but the owner can be rather rude. I think that he thinks he's being funny, but unfortunately, he's wrong.
Kendra
Absolutley love Mamak!! Favorite restaurant in all of Auckland. We have eaten here almost every week for the last year. Food is always fresh, delicious, the owner Geoffry always knows exactly what we are going to order.

Its BYOW as well which is a bonus.

Try the salt n pepper squids and the Roti Chicken Curry- excellent home made roti.

We always bring our guests here as its a guaranteed excellent feed.

Fast Friendly. Exceptional value for price! Highly recommend Mamak :)

So good! Been twice the past week with family, shared a range of dishes including roti canai, chicken rice, seafood laksa, char kway teow, nasi lemak, vege murtabak and I must say all was delicious! Best malaysian food in Auckland and totally worth the money

Been there few times. Food was okay and specially that's the only place in akl making fresh ROTI. When the first opening boss was really friendly and welcoming. But been there today, was trying to order ROTI BOM which is a dessert roti cost nzd8.50 , nasi goreng n a teh ais which make up total bil of nzd27.50. But boss was rude which i dunno what happen to him today as maybe i'm not as regular customer or their restaurant is busy enuff for not necessary to hav us to be the customer as he told me if i'm trying to order dessert roti which is a low price item during lunch hour they wouldn't really wan to do it as although mamak in msia is a place which can order a drink to sit there for chit chatting or ... but not with their shop since this kind of customer expenses can't even cover the minimum salary ...blah blah blah.. was got a bit shock since i don't think it's pleasant to said this to customer. We still sit there to finish our meal but overall it's really not a pleasant dining experience cause i believe service should remain although business has been expanded especially being a boss. This is just my personal experience. Thanks.

My friend and I went there as we thought of finding a place that taste similar to what we have back home in Malaysia. Char Kway Teow is pretty good unfortunately not the tom yam fried rice. Initially we thought of ordering the freshly made roti, but we both agreed is bit overprice. There is fresh roti around that charge at lower price.
David Boshier
I am not Malaysian but have lived in KL and this is exactly how I remembered the food. Right-down to the plastic side plates. The owner is very keen to give you are run through of the menu so that those not familiar with the selections understand the options and taste.

Start with the soft shell crab and try their freshly made Roti's.

Well worth a trip into the CBD for.
Rebecca
Mamak is a small eatery in the heart of the chancery.

Here you can buy authentic malay style meals for under $15.00.

The service is fast and friendly and the owner and operator remembers your face and has a good sense of humour.

If you like Malaysian it's a winner :)

Hi. I came to Auckland for a conference and found this restaurant via the website just few days before I left my country. They served amazing Malaysian foods which were almost similar in tastes and presentations like the one in Malaysia. I had the mee goreng mamak, teh tarik and popiah. Awesome. Nice ambiance. Clean and cozy. The Malay words that they printed on the wall were very entertaining. Very creative. Friendly owners. Great job Jeffrey and wife!

Highly recommend to all Malaysians who plans to visit Auckland someday!!

Ziera was here from 21st November till 26th, 2011

Great authentic food and well priced. They're busy for good reason, so best to make a reservation if you can. Good friendly service

I been to this place many times now and I am not disappointed with the food at all!

Food: It is really delicious. A must try -The dessert prata and the seafood laksa..everything seems to taste authentic...great that is how the end product should be.

Price: Reasonable and they do give you a large portion. Great for sharing.

Location: Suitable for a group of 6 max. Good place for both Lunch and Dinner.

If you like the price of going to the food-court...why not go to a more fancier environment at the chancery square.

Enjoy!
Jean
Best and most authentic seafood laksa I have ever had - fresh and plenty of seafood in it, AMAZING rotis. Might need to bring my own chilli however as theirs doesnt quite pack the punch I'm looking for. I'm on a wedding diet which allows me one free day a week and I intend to spend every one of those here. Devine.

Had two great meals here in the last few days. Situated in a nice quiet spot in the city, Mamak has smaller affordable dishes so that you can enjoy more flavours at a reasonable price. I had lamb curry, Sambal prawns, Roti and Soft Shell Crab. All the flavours were fabulous, the ingredients fresh and authentic and the service great. Good price for these outstanding dishes makes this a great place in the city.
Adeline
I've been here many times, even bringing friends along. Love the food. It's authentic, tasty and reasonably-priced. Service was impeccable too.
Highly recommended. The laksa is good, mamak mee goreng is yum and roti tisue is just heavenly..
Jessica
i agree the roti was too crispy but the fish gravy was good, not so much the dhal
NomNomPanda
My workmates and I have been having lunch here every week for at least a month now. Although quiet and empty when we first started (the restaurant is relatively new) it soon got to the point where we were being turned away because there were simply not enough tables! Lots of vegetarian choices ensures everyone in the group can be happy. Particularly recommend the mee goreng. The freshly made roti were tasty but almost too crispy.

Nice food and drinks. Great selections on the menu, ordered nasi lemak with sambal telur and Neslo (typical Malaysian meal), perhaps the best nasi lemak in Auckland.

A lot of people recommended Mamak as a place to go so I finally decided to try it. It was a bit of a disappointment, I didn't think the food was that great and it wasn't very authentic either. The beef rendang was quite sweet and my roti was a bit hard and dry not soft and fluffy. The prices were average but then so was the food. Not sure if my expectations were higher because so many people told me it was good... I've only been here once so I might have to try it again to see if it is as good as people have been saying. At the moment though it wouldn't be a place I would recommend

Went for a lunch today with my girls and it's not the usual that we go for malaysian resto. Our food was delicious and I liked the medium taste of spice on it. The place is not that huge and attractive though. I'll definitely come back for their milo dinosaur.

Although I think of myself as a leader rather than a follower; I'd noticed the great reviews this place has had and had to see for myself. Pushing through the tumbleweeds of a stormy day at the Chancery yesterday we saw an oasis of happy lunchers at Mamak. Although the surrounding establishments were devoid of custom, Mamak was heaving. We were squeezed in and the fun began. I was with a previous employer, for whom I waited in the '80s when she owned Rick's Blue Falcon - most of you won't remember, I know! But, she knows her way around a menu. We shared char kway teow, roti canai (chicken) and S&P squid; which was plenty. The laksa bowls delivered to other tables looked enormous and were mainly devoured by people on their phones. How dexterous to use a spoon, choppies and a phone at once - brilliant! Once we'd surveyed the other diners' meals ours arrived and we were away. The squid was tender and peanut free as requested - thanks! The noodles were thin noodles, not flat rice sticks and frankly, Sri Pinang still does the best in town with a 'wok ha' that is unparalleled. The revelation was the roti - UNBELIEVABLE! How did I not get here sooner? Awesome is a very overused word in this motu but these were totes brilliant. Just superb! On a sunny day this must be one of the best places in Auckland for a swift and satisfying (in every sense) lunch.

Came at 1pm for lunch and it felt like lunch hour had only just started- there was a full house of people and the food smells amazing when you walk in. The Seafood Laksa was huge, full of spice and flavour, definitely big enough for 2 people and had a good variety of tofu, squid, crab nuggets and bean sprouts. There's a roti add on for $4 with the laksa and this is a must try. Their roti has beautifully crisp bits outside, with soft and flaky inside and so good already on its own. Definitely one of the best roti I've had so far. Make sure you get there early as you'll likely have to wait for a table, but it's not too long. There is surprisingly good service too considering how full on it seems to be and asian joints usually have a reputation for focussing on food, not service.

Mamak is definitely the go to place for Malaysian fix in the heart of town! The owner, Jeffrey, is so friendly that you will feel like he is your own uncle visiting from Asia wanting to feed you food--lots of them. Jeffrey and his wife operate this tiny but always busy eatery (expect to wait for tables on lunch or dinner times); being regulars we were told that Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the best days to go, to avoid the wait.

They make their own roti, which is fresh and fluffy (I recommend roti with the curry chicken). Jeffrey pulls the teh tarik (Malaysian hot milk tea) himself, something that is interesting to watch for those who haven't been to Malaysia for local teh tarik yet. The fried noodles has a hint of curry and very tangy--refreshing and filling at the same time. Nasi goreng is also great, huge portion, and I recommend asking for extra chili! Their appetizer range is great; my favorite is the sambal (chili) squid balls and soft shell crab. I also have occasional cravings for their KTM soup (best for chilly days, or just simply a hangover day). For those who are not familiar with the cuisine their menu has mouth watering pictures attached for every dish sold.

I really enjoy the diversity of Malaysian food - the interesting fusion of Indian, Chinese and Malay. At Mamak, you can enjoy this delicious cuisine for under $15.

Service is quick, portion sizes are generous and the food is spicy and full of flavour. The fact that this place is busy every night is testament to its greatness.

I'd highly recommend the Roti Canai and the chicken curry.

I have been to Mamak a few times and I would say it is one of the best Malaysian restaurants in Auckland. The laksa is enormous (I have never finished it) and all the other meals I have tried are also generous in size. They make their own roti fresh everyday and it is fantastic. I recently branched out from my usual laksa and tried the beef rendang and chicken murtabak. Both were good but not amazing.
