Review 1947 Eatery - Auckland Central

Shamika Memane
Stepping into culinary bliss at 1947 Eatery. From the moment we entered we were greeted with warm smiles and impeccable service. We had mentioned in our reservation that we were celebrating our 1st wedding anniversary. Onkar the duty manager, went above and beyond to make sure we had a great experience. The ambiance is a perfect blend of elegance and coziness, setting the stage for a truly unforgettable dining experience. They have an autorickshaw in the restaurant! đŸ›ș They have a great selection of cocktails & spirits, definitely try Kingfisher beer đŸ» And as for the food? Prepare to have your taste buds transported to a whole new level of deliciousness. Every bite is a symphony of flavors, beautifully plated and crafted with passion. Authentic Indian food, we loved the Dum Chicken, Pani Puri, Seekh Kebabs, Roomali Roti, Samosa Chaat & the Jalebi. Trust me, you won't want to leave! đŸœïžđŸ˜ đŸŒŸđŸ„‚ Definitely recommended! The best Indian food I’ve had in Auckland!

First time trying Indian Fusion and had an enjoyable experience! The serivce was impeccable with servers looking after their table very well! Warm and cozy ambience and feels very city night life with dim lighting of the restaurant enough to see the cutural interior design. Food came out very fast (except the Tandoori Chicken which the waiter said would take a bit longer). Each dish blasted with rich and fragrant flavours and spice level was just enough that you would feel a mere heat. We got pani puri and curry chips as appetisers, the goat curry, Tandoori chicken, with some garlic naan. The chips were loaded with creamy curry sauce and topped with mayo and cheese. The naan was fluffy and soft and went well as a carb to go with the goat curry as the gravy of that dish was a bit salty but the goat meat was tender and lean. The tandoori chicken came out with a nice and smoky charcoal smell with a glaze of sauce and the meat wasn't too dry. The restaurant is certainly a great choice for special occassions and caters to all eaters who may or may not be so familiar with Indian flavours but maintaining those unique fragrant notes of Indian spices in their dishes.

Came here for Auckland restaurant month menu. We decided on a late lunch; the restaurant was quiet, but seems like a good place for an intimate dinner. Service could have been a bit more attentive, but wasn’t too bad. The food was good; highlights include the malai chicken starter and the lamb and chicken mains. They cook with a tandoor here and the meat as incredibly tender and flavoursome. The quantity of food for the main courses was pretty good; we ended up packing a fair bit! All in all, a good experience and would like to come again for dinner

I liked the food and drink although we were discouraged to get garlic naan to go with chilli chicken. This was an unnecessary advice as I’ve always had chili chicken with naan back home. Please make reservations before hand.

Delicious Indian food. Really enjoyed every dish we ordered. Highly recommend the mango lassi

Lovely place with character. Food is delicious with just the right amount of spice. We ordered a selection of dishes and had to make several requests for serving spoons as there were none. Service was prompt and friendly.

The butterchicken was pretty good, we enjoyed the tandoorichicken, freshly cooked we could still smell the charcoal. The lamb pepper fry was full of flavour. It was a great experience.

Booked a surprise dinner for my wife's birthday. Staff brought out the cake 🎂 and chanted the birthday song. Unreal experience, had a great night. Had chicken biryani, dahi kebabs, rumali roti, naans, okra fries. Food 10/10 Service 10/10 Greta atmosphere Awesome bar Polite staff A MUST VISIT RESTAURANT in Auckland.

Such a solid experience, the pani puris were gorgeous pops of flavor wow. Omg the curry chips and cheese was so much flavor and spice, so delicious with the cheese! The street samosa chat is a symphony of textures, spice and taste, surprisingly enjoyed this very much. The chicken lollipops were my absolute favorite, I wanted to so badly take the entire tables share, they were so perfectly spiced, cooked and seasoned, trust me when I say there was not a lick of meat left. Those lamb chops were heavenly, not gamey at all and I was licking the sauce off the plate. The bang bang butter chicken probably deserves one less bang but it wasn’t bad.

Lovely place, great food, friendly service, food didn't take too long, clean public convenience. Highly recommend this fine place to others.

She came like a wind and took my bowl away.....<br/><br/>food was good as always. To be honest, the manager did offer me a replacement which i really appreciate but it was really awkward to have my bowl taken away without even asking. I could see my naan watching the curry bowl sink (like it was thrown in the sink within seconds) <br/><br/>Certainly the best Indian food to offer in NZ. <br/><br/>Cheers<br/>Hasan<br/><br/>

Been here a couple of times now.. food is always delicious and staff real friendly. Opted for the $55pp restaurant month menu last night and left so full and satisfied. Awesome dinner and will be back.<br/>

We ordered the 2020 Auckland restaurant month which included a starter, entree, main and dessert all matched with a wine.<br/>The food was delicious and my only complaint with it is the Gulab Jammun, which was too sweet and the coffee cream it was served with should hav whist been plain ice cream. I only had one mouth full. <br/>All the other food was amazing!!!! 10/10<br/><br/>Unfortunately the service left a lot to be desired. Once we were seated we waited 10mins before we had to wave down a staff member to order our drinks and get some water. <br/>When we were half way through our main the waitress let us know that the dessert would take 10mins to prepare so we should let her know when she should ask the kitchen to prepare it.<br/>When we were about 5mins away from finishing our main, we asked the waiter to let the kitchen know we would be ready for our dessert in 10mins. It arrived immediately, before we had finished our mains which was annoying and pretty unprofessional.<br/><br/>We were also seated at a high table that had a very uncomfortable chair. If you visit I’d ask not to sit here.

I really enjoy the ambiance and service. <br/>But food is okayish. <br/>Cocktails are amazing though

Spent about $84 for two for an entree, small meal, main meal with two sides, and two non-alcoholic drinks. This would have been fine considering it’s a more upmarket restaurant if the food was good, but it WAS NOT. First of all, the street samosa chaat was spicy?!?! and was covered in tiny weird crunchy noodles (that had the consistency of candy sprinkles) with a TINY amount of actual samosa. It was pretty much MUSH! We would dig our forks around the bottom of the tin bowl and pick up shards of fried coating and literally found one potato piece in the whole mix. It wasn’t even deconstructed nicely, but topped with a mound of SAUCE that was far too sour. Chutney normally has a kick yes, but this was flat out spicy and was not supposed to be. Compared to the lamb chops and bang bang butter chicken which were SUPPOSED to be spicy and were actually MILD. Onto the lamb shanks, the seasoning like coriander seeds and cumin were lovely and the pea blend, lime and yoghurt flavors came through but the texture of the lamb was really mushy? There was no nice crispy seared coating and was not actually succulent or juicy inside because the meat throughout was mush. The masala fries which were potato’s cut thinly, battered and deep fried were quite tasty and a nice side. Onto the butter chicken which had stunner reviews, I thought it was the worst butter chicken I’d ever had?! The pieces of chicken were soft and succulent, but there was nothing special about the sauce, maybe more tart in flavor with less coconut milk/cream used. The sides were so bad. The basmati rice was so dry and hard. The crumbliness was expected but it shouldn’t have been hard. The garlic naan had no aromatic garlic taste and did not tear nicely because of how hollow and hard the coating was, so did not absorb the curry well when dipped. The mango lassi was nice but I didn’t like the nut pieces on the top?!? Very random to have small bits of debris in a drink. Now onto the customer service. Initially I thought it was great that we were explained of the food and could ask the waitress questions about the spice/portions/waiting time of the dishes and liked that the dishes were brought out one by one over the span of an hour allowing us time to enjoy each dish. BUT there were so many waitresses standing around doing absolutely nothing about 1-1.5 hours to closing time, that they would start coming to our table frequently for no reason but to “just check if you were done”. We had about 6 waiters/waitresses come to try to take our plates when we were not finished and stand in the corner ready and watching to see once each plate was empty ready to take. It was unnecessary and irritating. It was apparent when we had one lamb shank left on the plate, and the waitress came three times over the course of 10 minutes to see if it had been eaten yet. We were asked about how we enjoyed the meal from four different waitresses (that’s not even counting the servers who served our food and lingered to explain the components of the dish.) It was very ANNOYING and really overdoing customer service. I came here for a nice romantic dinner, not with the intention to be frequently interrupted for silly reasons. All in all, would not recommend.

The curry portions are huge but we were unaware of this so we ordered too much food... waitress could have told us this đŸ„Ž. the fish curry was not very nice but the dum chicken was pretty good. Our bill was $90 and we only ordered 2 ‘mains’, 1 rice, 1 naan, 2 non alcoholic drinks and a starter... not worth it.

Fabulous cocktails and even more fabulous staff (except for the lady server who might be having a bad day). If you are feeling adventurous on your drinks, definitely try out the cocktail range and you won't be dissapointed. Highly gram worthy

Went for a catchup dinner with friends and we ordered the chilli chicken, butter chicken, lamb chops and the paneer and just all loved every dish! So full of flavour in every bite! Will definitely go back to try some more. Highly recommend!!

Had a visit with friends and family. NOT SPICY Food, so people who love non-spicy can have one round.`Long island is good. Paw bhaji good rating from friends. Missed sweets after lunch due to delays. might be they are closing. <br/><br/>Recommendation: one-time visit<br/><br/>Happy eating

A great place for amazing occasions. Staff super friendly and on point. Keema pav was jus wallah kya baat kya baat😍 well it is really tasty. Cocktails a must try amazing and different. Way of presentation so eye appealing. Trust me I have to say you eat food here with your eyes first. <br/>One 🌟 down for me as I personally didn't enjoy the Dry Goat Curry. Music was ok and me and my friend's thought that the price for dessert was just over the top.<br/>Yes but I should admit that over all you definitely get a smile on your face. Good Work team 1947 Eatery.

What’s not to love about this fabulous restaurant. I have been there many times and tried few cocktails from menu, ambience is great and food is amazing.

Went there for my anniversary dinner and was disappointed in the service which was provided. I had already made a reservation for two but then on arrival we got a small table! When asked the staff to get our table changed, he said that he will speak to the manger and let us know. Got no response back about the changing the table! It’s was really uncomfortable having dinner in that small table that too on a special night. Not happy with the customer service which was provided. The food was average and the portion sizes were small too. Honestly did not have a good experience.

Best butter chicken in Auckland! Service was really friendly too.

Attentive staff, clean environment and amazingly good quality food! Couldn’t have asked for anything else. A must try for anyone looking for authentic flavours and knows the difference between an average mass produced dal makhni and slow cooked dal makhni!

An contemporary restaurant specializing in Authentic Indian food. The lovely lighting creates a great atmosphere for an intimate dining.<br/><br/>The menu is designed to share between groups. <br/>Started off with some Okra Fries and Samosa Chaat. The Okra Fries was crispy and appetizing. The Samosa Chaat was nice but not very memorable.<br/><br/>Ordered the Lamb Chop and Chicken Tandoori. The Lamb Chop was excellently flavored, very tender and wasn’t greasy at all. The chicken wasn’t boned, but was tender and excellently marinated.<br/><br/>They have the best Naans I’ve ever had. Their cheese and garlic naan was amazing, super fresh, layered with a bit of crust.<br/><br/>The Dry Goat Curry, Lambada Chicken and Eggplant Curry were also very nice and matched well with the naan.<br/><br/>Attentive and friendly waiters with great attention to detail. <br/><br/>Food taste: 9/10<br/>Food presentation: 8/10<br/>Service: 10/10<br/>Ambience: 9/10<br/>Value for money: 9/10<br/>Price $45 per person

The naan bread here is a must. It''s probably the best naan I've had. I also love their chilli chicken. The butter chicken was a little too sweet but it was creamy and heart warming. Curry fries were pretty interesting. Friendly service, cool menu and very nice interiors. Love the candle and free peanuts on the table.

Best tandoori I've ever had

Came here a while ago with a few friends. It’s a nice big space but intimate setting as they have the mood lightening spot on here. I ordered the fish curry, it was okay but nothing great so I’d try something different next time. The service wasn’t the best as the waitress obviously didn’t know the menu that well, but she was new so it’s understandable.

Food was ok even though very little in quantity. But their service SUCKS big time. If you want to go get harrassed by Indian hospitality students, be their guest. Wouldn't recommend to anyone.

This is the second time I've visited 1947 eatery. I don't know whether or not is because that the first-time charm had worn off, the experience were not as good as the first time.<br/>The atmosphere was just nice as always, and the staffs were helpful. Howeverthe food had disappointed me.<br/>The lamb shank was tender, but too bland for my taste. The dahi kabab were nice, but the portion is way too small for its price. And the naan was just average, for $4 a piece, you'd expect better, I've had better naan at takeaway! However, the only saving grace is the dry goat curry, which was delightfully flavorful. And the cocktail was nice, too.<br/>Overall, I would say that the place is still great place for your Indian cravings, but just don't buy into the hype too much.

1947 has quickly become my go-to restaurant, they've got every bit of the experience on point, from the welcome to the food and the drinks.<br/>The staff are attentive, polite and really knowledgeable about the food and the special drinks/cocktails on offer.<br/>Some may think that it is on the expensive side, but I would say that its money well spent and you wont even think about the cost after you're done dinning.

WOW! I could not fault a single thing about this place, the atmosphere was great- social but also intimate at the same time. The staff were super friendly and had a lot of knowledge on the dishes. <br/>We were recommended the Dahi Kebab, which was absolutely mouthwatering. In addition, we ordered the Curry Chips which is a definite must when visiting 1947, best "loaded fries" you'll ever have in your life, and the Paneer Lagan, this curry just melts in your mouth and the flavours are so balanced, we ordered the Cheese/Garlic Naan bread, and that perfectly tied everything together.<br/>Honestly enjoyed every aspect of this meal.

Not a fan of indian food but this place has changed my mind! Food and service was top notch. Interesting cocktails and stunning decorations. Was deeply in love with the food that forgot to take some photos :)). Will be back!

We were very excited to eat here as I’ve only heard good things about this place from friends. We were here to celebrate my wife’s birthday and had a very disappointing experience. The batter on the Wannabe Drumsticks was not fully cooked. The chicken in both Wannabe Drumsticks and Lambada Chicken had a strong smell and bitter-ish flavour. The curry tasted bland and was unevenly warm when it arrived on the table. The breads and Samosa chaat tasted good though.

The best curries we have had in a while, accompanied by some amazing cocktails. Served peanuts to snack on whilst waiting for mains. Lovely decor and great vibe!

Nice restaurant ambience, great service, the curry chips are a must try and the bang bang butter chicken and the lambada Chicken are really tasty. Good portion size, great place to go.

Loved the slow cooked Lamb. Great location.10 on 10 for ambience. Friendly staff. The only bad part is the long wait to get a table. But once you get in, its worth the wait 💖

A great place to enjoy traditional Indian food and also with a twist. The curry cheese loaded fries were amazing, perfect to share between two people. The chilli chicken was great, though not as hot as we expected(had 3 chillies rating on the menu). One of the best butter chickens I have ever had and the nicest naan bread. Will definitely come back and maybe not order as much food as very filling.

I'm writing this review a little late. Went here a couple months ago.<br/><br/>The service started great. Was greeted warmly as we were in a fairly large group. But turned to custard when the lady serving us didn't know a lot of the menu and she had to keep going and asking other staff basic questions.<br/><br/>One of the chicken dishes we ordered came with raw chicken. It was "pink". One of the waiters took it to the kitchen to show the chef, for it to only come back and tell us the chicken is cooked. It's just the marination.<br/><br/>I would like to know what red or pink marination goes into the bone of the chicken that hasn't been cut open or stuffed? And this was the malai chicken, not tandoori or butter chicken where you could have tried to use this excuse.<br/><br/>The rest of the food was ok. Nothing too great. A very pricey place for the sort of food and service you get. I would recommend I-Village over this place for good Indian food and service.

Love this place! Came as a surprise birthday dinner.. 27/04 We only had a starter and a main with rice and a roti, since there was more to follow. :D The chargrill chicken was totally on point, charred just right so the chicken was still super juicy while slightly crisp on the outside. The dry goat curry was equally good. Only wish we tried more including the cocktails, the bang bang butter chicken, lamb shank and chicken biriyani!!! Next time!

This place is an absolute gem. The concept behind the restaurant is lovely, and the authentic food that it delivers is sensational. My particular favourites are the dry goat curry and lamb shank. The service here is also great. Some times when it’s busy the food can take awhile to come out but it’s worth it!
FoodieOodie95
They served some amazing chilli chicken dishes and their menu is really versatile whilst still holding onto some of the traditional Indian dishes. The service was great and all the servers took such great care of us! I was sooo full so definitely didn’t have any room for dessert but we left satisfied and was so happy with everything we ordered.

Great birthday dinner for my partner!! Lovely homemade ginger soda nice kick start to dinner. The food is amazing really tasty and well flavoured . We had the tandoori lamb chops they were the stand out though u do have to wait for any tandoori for 20 mins before curries , so while they are worth the wait and we were told of this order snacks if ur hungry. The mains were a fish curry and the peppered lamb both were delicious. We got a roti one the side but for me it was a little too crispy but needed with rice for the yummy curries sauce. Staff are super helpful when explaining the menu and very attentive though we did get ask five times while eating if we were good which is a little too many times .would head back hear in a heartbeat to try more food!!

Yesterday we finally got to try out 1947 Eatery. I love Indian food and the reviews for this place looked really promising. I found the ambience of the restaurant very pretty, warm and modern. You can see that they took great care of the interior but also of the little details such a the menu cover. The menu is not extensive but has plenty of options from entrees till deserts and serving different tastes and diets. However, the food is pre-prepared in the morning and there is no room for requests or small adaptations. I asked if I could have a curry that was marked as medium spicy in a mild version, which isn't very difficult to do, but this was not possible. Also, we always prefer to have the entrees coming together with the mains. In every Indian Restaurant we have eaten, this has never been an issue. But, at 1947 Eatery this was not possible because entrees take less time to finish than the curries??? To me this is simply a case of not be willing to bother and to be honest a lack of customer service. The food itself was good. The entrees were very tasty, the curries were just average. The malai kofta was very rich in flavour whereas the paneer in the paneer lagan was way too soft. The breads and sides were ok. The staff in front office was very friendly. All in all I think the restaurant is nice and the food is good but looking at the complete experience and price in my opinion it is overrated. There are definitely better (and cheaper) Indian restaurants in Auckland. If you don't mind a bit of a drive I would recommend Raja's in Botany Downs as a great alternative, free parking, delicious food for almost half of the price or Mehmaan in Howick which is also really good.

The cocktail is way too pretty and tasty as well. I was coming with my Indian friend and the food she ordered are so nice, it’s really change my mind about what I’m thinking about Indian food!!

Never a disappointing meal! The samosa chaat, chili chicken and Bade Miyan are all our regular orders here. Value for money and flavor. Service is also on point.

I wanted to go here for so long and when I did it was part of a big group. The food was gorgeous, even with a set menu, they catered for all our dietary requirements, the staff were amazing. Can't wait to go back!!!<br/>Food: 5/5 (like way high 5)<br/>Service: 5/5 (impeccable!)<br/>Ambience: 5/5

Love the food here, it will take you back to india. Romali roti, fish and lamb curry is my fav :) excellent ambience and right in the centre of the city. Parking is a problem though as it’s not free. Good Quantity can be a bit high as it seems to be very low for the price..just my suggestion.

Some days all you need is a good curry. I’d been craving one for weeks, so suggested Indian food to friends for a catch up when I was back in town. To be brutally honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect with 1947. However, I was blown away! The ambiance is soft and lovely, the staff are welcoming, and little touches make the end to end dining experience super pleasant. My group had a selection of cocktails/wine, nibbles, tandoor items and dishes from the pot. Everything was flavourful, thoughtfully presented and interesting. I felt as though food I has tried before was being served in a new way, and I liked it! Will be back on return to Auckland to work my way through the rest of the menu, and try another cocktail.

Based on my recent visit, this place was a different experience. The way the menu was explained and how quickly we were served despite being busy was fabulous. Definitely will visit again.

Dined here on Monday night (27th May). Party of 12 for our mum's 70th birthday dinner. Fussy eaters and three vegetarians. The food was just wow! We had the famous curry fries, chili chicken, lamb chops, tandoor prawns, paneer lagaan, etc, etc... every single dish was delicious. Marry that with impeccable service and a wonderful evening of celebration was had by all.<br/>The cocktails were amazing and the kids were well entertained watching the barman work his magic. Everyone is still talking about our amazing time at your establishment. We will no doubt be back. Thank you for making our mum's day all the more special.

Excellent Indian restaurant. Very nice location. Paid parking is right at the front. Only few steps away from SkyTower. Excellent ambiance, good service and very tasty food. <br/>

Tucked hidden in Federal street of Auckland’s CBD is this wonderful Indian restaurant which I can safely say on of the best Indian restaurants Auckland has to offer. When you come in and get seated everything will be explained to you even where they got their name, 1947 will be a year most Indians would know but for those who do not know the Indian History it was their year of independence.
Mad_about_food_ZuZu
Great place to enjoy Indian style fusion food. Very unusual style of serving drinks but no regrets as all the drinks that we ordered were unique in their own way. The ambience is just perfect and I'd surely recommend you to experience it than read about it. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. Overall it was bit expensive but a great experience. Thank you team 1947 Eatery for your warm hospitality. Cheers 🙂

Today we had our mothers day celebration here and it's the first time we have been to 1947 eatery.<br/><br/>I have to say that the service was exceptional. Right from the time we stepped the place to the time we left we were looked after and our server was polite, helpful and very attentive.<br/><br/>On those grounds alone I give 1947 a highs score.<br/><br/>But then you taste the food and it's amazing. They have captured the flavours of India lost in so many other Indian restaurants and take it to the next level.<br/><br/>Being mothers day they even honoured mums with a little takeaway gift of a bottle of masarla. I just feel like they went above and beyond to make the experience special.<br/><br/>I would happily recommend this place to anyone and go back here myself.<br/><br/>If I could provide one piece of feedback it woukd be that the portion sizes could be slightly better. The food was delish.

Spoiled our evening big time. Had made booking in advance, but the server refused to serve alcohol as we were not carrying ID. The lady who took our reservation didnt inform that they need ID to serve alcohol. <br/>As much as I like the food here, will not be returning. Very disappointed.

Amazing food and service! We were taken to our seats promptly, water was brought and the menu explained.<br/>For 2 we ordered a Mango Lassi (and another non alcoholic drink), lamb chops, butter chicken, goat curry, cheese+garlic naan and a bowl of basmati rice. The Mango Lassi was aromatic and thick, perfect level of sweetness, and the crunchy toppings complimented it well - very authentic! The lamb chops were smokey and tender, and the sauce gave it that extra burst of flavor. The masala chips on the side were a bit too hard for my liking. Both butter chicken and goat curry were very flavourful and the meats were tender, especially the goat which fell off the bone easily. The butter chicken tasted more like an NZ version (was sweeter than some more authentic ones Ive had) - still delicious though. The Naan was not overpowering with the cheese and garlic so complimented the curries well.<br/>It was $90 for two and we couldn't finish it, so the price is quite good, especially for a date night.

The decor is lovely however they really need to have more consistent lighting...one of our group had to resort to his phone torch to see the menu as the lighting at our table was much dimmer than other tables. The lamb chops were beautifully done with a great chargrilled flavour however the accompanying sauce was bland. Bade miyan chicken was delicious with the right amount of spice. The Nihari (modified to suit the masses) had a good caramelised oniony gravy however you could still taste the cornflour to thicken the gravy which spoilt the experience somewhat. Naan was average. The waitperson serving us did not know how to pronounce the name of the dishes (so there was a lot of repeating & pointing at the menu items) and seemed inexperienced. Food took ages to arrive. Overall we expected better than what was experienced.
Hungry D
Went on a Friday... very busy and I can totally see why. Had the lamb shank Nihari, lamb pepper fry, kachumber salad and a peshwari naan. Only one word to say “excellent” food, tastes, great texture, flavour and portion sizes. One of the factors that influence my assessment of a restaurant is the number of natives from the cuisine visiting the restaurant. 1947 had tons of Indians dining just confirms the quality of food. Will visit again !!
Foodaholic
Polite and friendly staff. He gave us a brief intro on the year 1947 and it's importance in the history of India and about their food. We visited 1947 for lunch and we ordered lamb chops for starters, chicken lambada with butter naan and chicken biryani. Yes, it takes patience to wait for the order to arrive, but they do inform you in advance how long it might take when they take your order, according to the dish ordered.<br/><br/>Coming to our order, lamb chops from the tandoor was melt in mouth, soft and tender meat and very yummy! We loved it. It was the best of everything we ordered. Chicken lambada was mild and yet tasty. Very soft naans to complement the curry. However, i personally felt that the chicken biryani was an average dish for the given price.
CHIFAN.EATS
I had high expectations after seeing it on the new Metro Top 50 list. However the food and service were pretty average... The paneer and mango lassi were amazing. But then it’s straight up disappointment. There was nothing special about the chef’s special, the naan and paratha didn’t even beat the food court ones, totally not something you’d expect from a restaurant like this. The worst part is service. We were served our main but we didn’t have enough cutleries (2 sets for 4 people). We tried but failed to get the attention of the staff, we ended up waving like crazy for a good 3 minutes but still no one came to our table. We got pretty annoyed by the end of it and walked across the restaurant to get some cutleries. The table right next to us had the same problem, waved for ages just to get the attention of a staff. They definitely need to work on their service.<br/><br/>Food 6/10 Service 4/10 Ambience 8/10

Loved everything we ordered and our waiter was very helpful! Highly recommend trying the Curry Chips, Wannabe drumsticks and Lamb pepper fry

Loved it at 1947. The food was amazing and was so good to be having such good Indian food in Auckland. The staff was very friendly and liked the ambience too. Would definitely recommend reservation cause this place is packed even on a weekday.
Matchstick Reviews
I went here recently for lunch with some friends, and to be perfectly honest, I had not heard of the place, but I am very pleased that I now know about it! It is tucked away on Federal Street, quite hidden to be frank. This place is one of the best Indian dining experiences I have had and want to go back to have more recommendations and try their absolutely delicious looking cocktails!<br/><br/>The atmosphere of the place is very on trend with a rather industrial/cigar lounge aesthetic, still with touches of its origin of cuisine. It even has an old school Indian Tuk Tuk sitting in the entrance! Otherwise the interior is very modern and simply a nice place to be with a warm ambiance. The place is also very conversational with no awkward looking tables which is a must for all eateries.<br/><br/>The food here was absolutely incredible, we ordered a range of things to share which is perfect for Indian cuisine. All dishes that we ordered were winners, which were: Malai Koftas, Lamb Pepper Fry, Chilli Chicken, and the Bade Miyan Chicken. The standouts for me however, were definitely the Lamb Pepper Fry and the Chilli Chicken. But I have to say most of the menu looks and sounds delicious and needs to be explored. I can't wait to go back and further investigate this menu. The drinks also look incredible, I haven't the honour of trying them yet, but I definitely will.<br/><br/>The staff were friendly and the service was efficient, but I am yet to see this place in full swing when the numbers are high and the staff are reeling. But I definitely get the impression that this place will cope. I am not quite sure why but another winning aspect of this place was the water vessels, which were tin instead of glass. I don't know why but I really liked this as the cups were quite ornate and it made it feel a little more relaxed and comfortable. <br/><br/>Overall, I will update this review with more recommendations as I don't expect my view to change. But I cannot wait to go back and that speaks a lot about a place. For me I think it is in the top 4 Indian places to eat in Auckland. The atmosphere is modern and conversational, the food is delicious, the staff are friendly and it oozes a sense of a well organised and popular place.

Expensive but you get good value of money. Very good environment, friendly staff. Exceptional menu, couldn't get lamb shank nihari in two trips, have heared a lot about it, biryani is good and other curries are good as well. The best is the presentation.

I have been to this restaurant before and I loved it. I reviewed it as well like a month ago. I am changing my review now and decreased the rating for the following incident that happened.<br/><br/>So, as all the fine dining restaurants do and we as a customer expect a great customer service. I went to this place on Monday (easter holiday). We ordered cocktails and entrees following our tandoori chicken and the mains. So, we ordered another set of tandoori rotis and the waitress forgot to put in the order. We waited for 10-15 mins and called the waitress and asked for the rotis from her facial expression it was clear that she forgot and she made some ‘lame’ excuse and told us it will come in 5 mis. After another 15 mins we called the waitress and finally when the rotis arrived. All the curries got cold and they didn’t even offer for a reheat or anything. Then, when the manager arrived she offered to take off the rotis off of our bill. Well, they didn’t help much in resolving the complaint and the waitress had no explanations and was saying what can i do? I didn’t want to create a scene or anything in front of my family friends i was with. Anyhow, I wont be going there anymore plus i wouldn't hardly recommend it now.

Great atmosphere, service and food. If what you're after is a decent North Indian western dining experience - I would highly recommend this. The two of us way over ordered - butter chicken, goat curry, garlic naan, raita, and a cucumber salad.. oh and we started with the butter chicken fries with butter sauce and cheese. The portions were generous. It was all delicious - order what I did if you cant decide. Thanks for a great dining experience.

First time at this Indian eatery, pretty nice decor which is quite modern compared to many eateries out there. Friendly staff and attentive. Came here for Sunday lunch. Ala cart choice, we ordered chili chicken, goat curry, mayan curry with cheese, garlic and butter naans. Their chilli chicken is really tasty and naan is really soft and freshly made. Authentic and delicious, priced higher than the usual Indian eateries but worth the quality.

I have eaten at this restaurant a couple of times with a group of friends. The food is delicious, one of the best indian I have had. The dishes are good for sharing and reasonably priced. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

Went for my wife's birthday dinner and thoroughly enjoyed the food and service. Staff was friendly and food was authentic. I just clicked one picture of wannabe drumsticks but we also had chicken biryani, chicken chilly and rumali roti. Oh boy thank's for getting rumali roti in your menu as I had it after a long time and it was perfect. I loved all the flavours in our food as it was genuine. Cheers..

First of all, the food was amazing and the restaurant is outstanding. One thing I did not like about the restaurant is how the staff’s are being treated. One of the staff members did mention that she only gets a 10 minute break out of her 4-5 hour shift which really tires her out and I think that is incredibly insane. Treat you staff as family not as just waitresses. You can see how stressed out some are & when they do get told off for tiny mistakes. But my dine in a week or ago was excellent besides the bad news from one of the staff members.

Heard a lot of positive and negative things about the place so planned to visit it for the experience. We did a booking for 7 pm on a weekday and reached the place 30 min early as 1947 does not have its own reserved parking and finding a decent/cheap parking in the city is a task. They were very welcoming and took us to a table of 2. We requested to change tables and they accommodated us . Food was different and authentic. Place was almost packed and staff is very attentive. Chili chicken is a must try. They do have a desert menu of 3 dishes which I couldn’t find on the website or Zomato so I have added in the picture. Not a good place for clicking pictures as the lights are dim. Overall a good experience. P.S If the lady staff with the yellow glasses and stings could smile more.

Went there for the second time and wasn't disappointed. Excellent service as well, thanks to the waiting staff to let us know that there will be a slight delay in order and keeping us informed as there was a technical issue in the kitchen, but even then, it didn't take that long for the order to arrive. Looking forward to going there again and trying out other dishes.

Wow this place surprised me. Amazing Indian food, amazing cocktails. Very nice ambience. Had a staff gathering here and everyone loved the food. The curries were amazing and my fav was actually the cocktails. The dessert were okay but would not recommend if you are not used to the special taste of Indian desserts

Great cocktail! Great food! Great service! Will come back again!<br/>Came with some Indian foodie friends, pretty good for what you can get in Auckland CBD!<br/>We had lamb chops and the curries are generally good!

1947 is the other Indian restaurant I love in Auckland other than Paradise. It's kinda fancier than Paradise, but it still has a pretty casual and relaxed environment. Perfect for a date night.<br/>đŸ„˜ We got the lollipop chicken, cheese & garlic naan and the butter chicken. Highly recommend their naan, really soft and flavourful. Their butter chicken tastes kinda different, it has a more authentic taste.<br/>🍾 They also have some really cool cocktails. So far, only tried the popcorn one. Never would have thought popcorn would go really well with alcohol 😆

If you are in New Zealand you must not miss this place foodies.. Last night, we a group of five n a toddler visited the 1947 Eatery in Auckland City for dinner and I must say it is one of the best Restaurants serving Indian cuisine in Auckland... Worth spending every penny , beautiful ambience, very friendly staff and super delicious food ...<br/>So we started with some Cocktails n Mocktails ( different flavours but special ones) .. had Chilli chicken n wannabe drumsticks for starters, Chicken Biriyani, Butter chicken, Butter Naan n Lamb Pepper fry for main course. The Butter Chicken was the main highlight and a must try.<br/>Rating : 5/5<br/>

The curry chips were delicious and so was the tandoori chicken. Wouldn't say the butter chicken was the best I've had, a little too sweet for my liking preferred the goat curry to it. Service was good and the staff were attentive and friendly. One of the few Indian restaurants I'd go back to!

Me and my partner went to have dinner. We entered at 8.45 and the lady at entrance told us to order everything before 9.30 pm<br/>We were not allowed to sit in section we wanted ( the lady told us it's closed now- however there were still people dining there- example of how friendly these guys are)<br/><br/>Another person came to take order- again he remained us of 9.30 deadline at 8.45 pm. Our mains came at 9.35 pm- food was delivered by a third guy (he was probably the nicest one and more friendly), we requested him for one more nan bread.<br/><br/>When we were waiting for our nan- the 2nd guy came back and offered to take our stuff when we were still eating and waiting for food. I was amazed how eager these guys are to close even when someone is eating.<br/><br/>They started cleaning the restaurant at 9 and arranging chairs at 9.00 pm.<br/><br/>Worst customer service for an overrated and overpriced restaurant.<br/><br/>My personal ratings:<br/><br/>Food: 2.5<br/>Ambiance: 2<br/>Customer service: 0.5<br/>Eagerness to close restaurant: 5+<br/><br/>Not coming back and won't recommend to anyone. For this price, you can go to a far better place.

Amazing food would highly recommend anyone looking for a place for a nice dinner. The chilli chicken was the favourite thing we ordered. A very cozy environment. Would have loved it if our server were to tell us more about the freeing of India, other than that a great experience

Good place, good food however service was very slow we got our order after an hour.<br/>would recommend chicken biryani and butter chicken. Bit pricey but it's just prime location thing.

Visited this place on Christmas 2018, was actually surprised to see it open. The food was really good, we ordered a couple of starters and dal makhani and paneer lagan in main course. All the dishes were perfect. They give you roasted peanuts(in shell) while you wait for your food, which keeps you busy. They had a surcharge of 20% that day since it was Christmas and a public holiday which I felt was a but unfair, hence the 4 stars, else it was one of the best Indian meals I had in NZ.

Not at all friendly place. Sitting place very uncomfortable. Arrogant staff. Can't even smile while serving. Horrible food. Horrible customer service

My 6th visit yesterday, definitely the last. Service & food, both have gone down. Bombay Mule totally lacked punch.  Billed for an extra item. Starter came with the mains.  Not good, anymore!
Sohan Joshi
I have visited this restaurant from one our friends suggestion, until the starters being served service was really good, lady from Argentina was really nice and friendly.we did not finished our starters and there was no space to serve the mains as table was so tiny, one of the dumbest service staff came with mains with out checking that we were still having our starter. Then he was insisting us to make some space to keep mains I was telling him that wait until we finish and then serve but after that also he started putting all the mains and when I told him to clear the table he said it’s not my job😡 when we complain to manager he did not take much efforts to resolve this issue, and that dumb service guy was walking around with attitude he did not bother to say sorry, very very disappointed with service.food was good but food quantity was small. They should put the note on there menu saying beware of service staff🙏

Indian flavours with a modern twist. Ordered: curry chips, chicken lollipops, lamp chop tandoor and bang bang burger chicken. Very impressed with the Curry chips, soft with real curry flavours (not just curry powder). Lollipop chicken were crispy on the outside and tender inside, but wish there were more (only get 4) . The lamb chops were bite size ,bit spicy but went well with the yoghurt. The curry was a disappoint- nothing special. Offers diversity menu but average flavours.

Mixed feelings about the place. They try hard and for the most part the food was fine. Avoid the tandoori prawns though! At almost $20 for 2 little prawns, you’d expect some pretty amazing prawns. Unfortunately it was dry and over cooked. That ruined the dining experience. When we passed feedback to staff, they couldn’t care less. Ruined the experience and they didn’t recover from that.
Chasingawesomeness
An Indian giving a rating of 5 star to an Indian restaurant outside India - It has to be absolutely terrific and that is what this place is. Unfortunately I couldn’t click the pics as I was there on a business meeting. We started with street samosa chat which was like the chat from old Delhi roads. Followed it up with daal makhni and malai kofta with some garlic naans. Daal makhni was so good that I couldn’t stop raving about it and even complemented the people that it is just like how it is cooked in a kitchen in Punjab! The ambiance is fabulous too with the right amount of lightings and nicely laid out tables. If in the mood for Indian in Auckland CBD- don’t look elsewhere.

I visited 1947 eatery yesterday night. The food was below average . I had ordered Chilli chicken , Bade maya chicken, lacha paratha rumali roti and deccan prawns. The chilli chicken was hard (chicken was not fresh) and can taste the rawness of the sauce.<br/>Bade maya chicken was ok served in a big bowl but the curry did not even filled 50% of the bowl.<br/>Lacha Paratha was very hard and in pieces already(dont know if that is how it is supposed to be) but eating the paratha with the curry made the curry taste bland.<br/>I was served prawns after 40 mins. There were 3 of them and 1 was a half prawn . I had to take the trouble to shell them after paying for it. May be because the shells were there to make it look a bigger portion. Ambience and staff was good. But the food is below average.<br/><br/>Not at all the experience I expected after all the hype I had heard about this restaurant. I had actually recommended this to few people even before trying it myself. I repent it

Best authentic Indian food in Auckland! My recommendations would be the biriyani, kheema pav and dry goat! Their chaat is fab too! Been there multiple times and every time the service and food is great.

Parking was ok lucky we found one right outside the restaurant but it is paid. Nice environment and I would recommend with family. Great staff and awesome service, very fast, yummy food and drinks. Just didn’t like the fact we were on the table for 1 hour and waiting for our next meal and was told we need to clear the table soon as it’s booked after us, not something I normally get told when dining. I would expect they want us there longer so we order more food but instead told we would have to move to another table if we spent any longer. We were waiting for our last meal so it’s not our problem if it took longer and it’s not nice to move to another table while eating. Lucky that didn’t happen otherwise that would have killed the whole good experience we had. I’m sure it’s assumed to be a fancy Indian restaurant and not a fast paced diner. Other than that I would recommend to anyone who wants to go to a fancy Indian restaurant in town.

Absolutely amazing spot to get the most authentic indian food in Auckland (maybe even New Zealand). The ambiance is nothing like your average indian restauarant, its a dark and classy joint. The prices are a bit higher than expected but 1947 makes up in the quality. Knowing what authentic indian food tastes like, 1947 hits the spot, especially on their lamb chops which are cooked to perfection and the spice is on point!. The butter chicken fries are also an item that I'd recommend. The service is quick and the staff are very attentive, absolutely love this place!

I’ve heard of this restaurant a lot and I went in with high expectation and they did not fail me. THE BEST Indian food I’ve had in Auckland. And the cocktails are AMAZING. It’s an all-in-one restaurant. The customer service was just as good. Highly recomended. A MUST Try if you’re in Auckland. Thank you guys

Worst experience ever. Expected it to be better than what i heard. Poor customer service. No consideration what so ever. Would never want to come back. Not recommended at all.

This place is right in the city hub and easy to locate. The ambience is quite good and the service is prompt. I didn’t face any major issue but a few misplaced orders. The food is good but expensive. Being honest I am new to Auckland and I missed Indian food and this place came to the rescue.
Flippynz
Awesome venue and complimentary peanuts! What more do you need? Started with the rack of lamb tandoor with masala chips. This is a must try and didnt last very long. Main was butter chicken which was very good but not outstanding. I would look at other mains unless thats all you know.

We arrived at 1947 as a group of 7 with no booking, and lucky for us, it wasn't a problem at all. The service was wonderful, the ambience of the restaurant was dim and quiet (my favourite). The food was delicious, I had the samosa chaat and the tawa chicken and thoroughly enjoyed both. Will definitely be back again for a date night :)

Had a great time at 1947 trying out some delicious food with a bunch of friends. Did a pre-booking just before an hour and luckily got a place on a busy Saturday night. Was served by a very friendly staff, Steff. She was fun and friendly. The food was served a bit late, but keeping in mind of the alacarte menu that they have and the whole lot of things that we ordered,it was obvious. Food was delicious and value for money. Would recommend others looking for a 'fine dining' experience with Indian Food.I'd actually give them a 4.5 (ambience was great too)

Had one of the worst dining experiences at this place. Initially had heard great things about this restaurant and about how good the food was. Booked well in advance (few weeks ahead) and then got there and was told that our booking had been “forgotten”. Received below average service and was served overpriced, average food. Not worth the hype at all, there are so many other Indian restaurants in Auckland that serve great food for a fraction of the prices with far better service. Staff were very unfriendly and the overall experience was terrible

Very nice place. Ambiance is awesome. Food is delicious. Loved the Pav bhaji and Soup. <br/>Staff is friendly and service is good. Recommended. <br/>I personally like the rickshaw standing in hotel that reminds me days of India â˜ș

Ambience is best but little too dark to bring kids here. I will say not so kid friendly. Lamb was good but bade Miyan chicken was just average. Dal makhni was below average. Bit overpriced for the quality of food. There are other better Indian restaurant in Auckland for the same cost.
I'm Hungry
Decor and ambience is the best here. Fine and fun dining experience. Simple and good menu. Very cute staff, service quick and food great. Lamb pepper fry was the hero of the night, bade miya chicken was average, lollipop chicken was nice and peshwari nan too sweet

I called for a reservation for a Saturday night as i couldnt get my preferred spot online and the person who answered the phone was able to accommodate our group at short notice, after learning that it was for a birthday celebration.<br/><br/>5/5 star rating for the ambience. Modern but the old school detailing (hangings, cutlery holders, glasses, serving dishes, etc)gives it its charming feel.<br/><br/>4/5 star rating for the food and drinks. Absolutely DELISH!!! We started of with the lollipop chicken and curry chips. Highly recommend the curry chips, a very nice indian take on the western loaded chip we get at the pubs. For mains we had the Bang Bang Butter Chicken, Lamb Pepper Fry, Bade Miyan Chicken, Biryani and assorted naan breads. Loved the theatrics behind the biryani covering. Highly recommend the Lamb Fry, was deliciously tender and melt in your mouth. The naan bread was also amazing, soft and without the heavy hint of yeast, that i have experienced at other restuarants.<br/><br/>4/5 star rating for the service. Our servers were very attentive.

Best curry/service/ambience Indian restaurant in auckland, hands down. We have been visiting fine Indian establishments every month for the last 3 years, and 1947 was outstanding. Special thanks to our waitress Steffi who made the experience that much better. We will be back next round

Had an amazing dinner here on Friday night.<br/><br/>I would definitely book well ahead of time as we could only get a table for 9pm.<br/><br/>We had an incredible waiter for the night. It was only his 4th day but he was super friendly and helpful.<br/><br/>We started of with curry chips and the chili chicken. The chili chicken was amazing, however there is a very strong garlic flavour which some may find overpowering. For our main we had the bang bang chicken which was also yum! Unfortunately I only got a photo of the chili chicken.<br/><br/>For drinks, I had something which had 'shelter' in the name and it was delicious!<br/><br/>I would definitely come here again.

I like the atmosphere of this place and been there many times. There daal makhni with rumali roti is perfect combo. Chilli chicken in best. I love their cocktails. My personal favourite is Long Island and cold blood.

We came here for a work lunch and was referred by our colleague. The restaurant looks great and atmosphere sets the mood. The staff were friendly and quite attentive to our big group. <br/><br/>We ordered samosas and masala tea and they were absolutely amazing! Just a burst of flavours in your mouth, definitely recommend getting these. For my main, I ordered the chicken biryani and that was yummy too. The serving was more than I can eat (since I was full after the samosas and the tea! :) ) and felt bad leaving leftover. The rice and the chicken was so full of flavour, had a mild spice with it but tolerable for me. Next time I’ll share with someone else. <br/><br/>Definitely recommend this place, it was a lovely hearty meal.

The best Indian restaurant in Auckland in my opinion. Great food, full of flavour and decent portion sizes. Great price points and a very creatively crafted food and cocktail menu. Good for both big groups and intimate dinners. Staff are always lovely and service is pretty fast even on the busiest of nights. Love this place!
Edwina - Let’s Eat!
This place I’ll rate 4.5. The food is prepared with thought and authenticity. Every single bite was to die for. My husband and I shared each meal (unplanned) just to share every experience. It was beautiful. This place should be ranked amongst the top 50 for sure compared to their peers in the same cuisine category. The service was less attentive than expected but the meal made up for the distraction. Beautiful!

We kept on walking past this place and today we popped in here mid afternoon when It was semi quiet...<br/>Nice service ... big place yet even if it is busy it’s spacious.. nice restaurant with good bar too.<br/>We ordered all the bites except breads:<br/>Street samosa chaat<br/>Spiced corn<br/>Curry chips<br/>Lollipop chicken<br/>Also:<br/>Lamb chops from the Tandoor<br/>Garlic naan<br/>Deconstructed samosa has lovely flavours and was really nice.. curry chips OMG yum.. chicken and chips were both very nice.. <br/>Great restaurant and food especially if you go with a big group then you can try more dishes as they are generous.<br/>Very nice cocktails too.<br/>

Had #ChickenLollipop with schezwan sauce dip after soo long! #1947eatery What an amazing place this is... Just reminded me of India especially their authentic taste in every dish and the effort they have put in their presentation, service, ambiance & welcoming staff đŸ‘đŸ» Would definitely recommend this place anytime if you are craving some North Indian food à€Čà€Ÿà€œà€”à€Ÿà€Ź à€–à€Ÿà€šà€Ÿ full authentic style then go to 1947 à€ˆà€Ÿà€°à„€ <br/>We also tried their Kakori Kebabs and their Dum Biryani.<br/>Jalebi Rabri for dessert<br/>Masala Chai was on very strong and authentic though their food presentation, service and staff are awesome!<br/>The ambiance is also very cozy and the fact that their staff are very kind and educate customers about Indian cuisine and about 1947 was a very innovative style .
ChefZ
A nice modern vibe and atmosphere for an Indian restaurant. Felt like the best of dishes from Indian restaurants across the city were clubbed and put into one small, trendy and eye-catching list. <br/>Wasn’t wowed by the food, even though it was delicious as there are other restaurants that sell the same stuff, some equally good and some even better and reasonably priced with apt portion sizes. <br/>There was some dishes on the menu that were unique to this place but not enough to set it apart.<br/>Overall a satisfactory experience.
Sehaj Mehra
It is one of the best Indian Restaurants that I have come across. From Amritsari Kulcha to authentic butter chicken, the food and ambiance stole the show. However, we did have an unfortunate incident of finding a piece of cling wrap in Chicken Biryani but the manager made up for it by providing us new two biryanis and desserts on the house. The Chef was extremely friendly and apologized dozen times for the mishap and made up for this incident. Extremely good food, best staff that I have across in six months and beautiful ambiance. Highly recommended. Cheers :)

We never get bored of their menu. Their chicken in the tandoori menu are the yummiest of all! We had the tandoori fish for a change (pictured) and it was nice, but the chicken is still on the top of our list LOL. If you are a thirsty fish like me. The longest island ice tea is a must have to start your meal with! I also tried Gulabo from their mocktail menu & it was surprisingly tasty. Even though the drink was mixed with black pepper. It tasted deliciously refreshing. And don't under estimate the traditional Masala Chai. It doesn't just taste great, it also served in the cutest tea pot ever (pictured)!!

So I heard a lot about this place and finally I went in expecting to try some delicious food. It's pretty expensive if you are a student but good for get together with a group of friends. About the place -<br/>Ambience is pretty good and staff is very friendly.<br/>So I ordered Pav Bhaji $12 and extra pav but to my expectation it was kinda bad. The Bhaji was extremely good but the pav were very hard to chew on. They even changed it but it was kinda same. The good thing that the staff was very kind enough to give one extra pav free of charge. I would probably visit again to try their curries.

Best food and even better cocktails in town. Make sure you make a reservation before you go there and must try their chicken lollipops and chilli chicken
Rahul Gijare
Best Indian food I have ever eaten in New Zealand. The restaurant ambience is of a canteen in Mumbai but still maintains to be classy. The staff is very welcoming and gives great suggestions on the food. <br/>Do try their “Chilli Chicken” its the best. Also the service is very fast. So you dont have to wait for too long to receive your meal. <br/><br/>Its a little bit costly compared to other Indian restaurant. But its totally worth it.

I had heard about 1947 from a few family members and even my uber driver!! So naturally I was eager to try it out! It is hidden on the quieter side of Federal St and well worth the visit. I love the decor of this place with the little tuk tuk at the front. I went with a friend who is pescatarian, and there were plenty of seafood and vegetarian options for her. We loved everything we ordered, but the tandoori prawns were unreal! To top it off, the cocktails are worth the splurge, I had the pink lady which was equally beautiful and delicious. The service could use some work, we had three different waiters and got a bit confusing. However, definitely check out 1947 for some delicious, authentic Indian food.

* SORRY DON'T HAVE PHOTOS*<br/><br/>1947 Eatery is hands down one of my favorite places to go to in Auckland for some great Indian food and cocktails! <br/><br/>My frequent visits aren't complete without ordering there delicious Curry Fries and the Bombay Mule! The Curry Fries is an Indian twist to the classic fries, topped with a delicious curry (vegetarian) and melted cheese (absolute fav). The Bombay Mule is an Indian twist to the classic Mojito!<br/><br/>The food overall is delicious, the last visit I wanted to try some new things so I had ordered the Dahi Kebab, which my taste buds didn't fancy :( It had a weird texture, and it wasn't served with any chutney or any other condiment.<br/><br/>The tandoori menu takes about 20-25 minutes to make, so I avoided that and went straight to the mains! For mains, I had ordered the Bade Miyaan Chicken, which was really yum! It was filled with flavors and was good on the spicy level. The chicken was cooked well, and the pieces were the right size and the curry was yum!<br/>We had also ordered the Paneer Lagan which just amazing. I've never had such soft paneer dishes at restaurants, and the paneer would just melt in your mouth! Definitely enjoyed the mains!<br/><br/>The quantities of the dishes were a good size, I'd say one curry can be shared with two-three people.<br/><br/>There's a good range of bread and naans - we opted for a garlic naan and tandoori roti, which were crisped well.Rice isn't served complimentary with your curries, and the quantity of the raita was very small.<br/><br/>The service that night was really good, they were really packed, but we still had waiters/waitresses coming up to frequently and making sure we're doing okay and if we needed anything. <br/><br/>The lighting is a bit dark, but it adds to the ambiance of the restaurant. Love the rickshaw at the front of the restaurant and the other elements in the restaurant making it a banger!<br/><br/>Overall a great experience every-time! My only concern is that off-street parking is limited on Federal Street and the closest parking lot is SkyCity.
Pamela Mansell
I’d come here just for the curry fries - they’re amazing!! The cocktail list is also fab and creative. <br/>I’ve tried a few things on the menu and the only thing that didn’t really excite me was the deconstructed samosa. A great spot for tapas and drinks
Harprabh Singh
One of the best Indian food restaurants in the city, with an authentic flavour. Really good service and hospitality from the staff. Would recommend Indian food lovers to visit the restaurant and try anything from the menu, you would love it.

I love Indian food and was really excited to try this place out. <br/>Food was amazing - enjoyed everything we ordered.  Food highlight was actually a  recommendation by our waitress - the Pav Bhaaji - so tasty and a really good mix of flavors and textures. <br/>Excited to come back!

The ambience is charming, the concept is innovative and the food is delicious. But the service takes away from all of these positives. The service needs A LOT of work!<br/><br/>I’ve been twice and during my last visit it was particularly appalling. Not only were we charged for an item we didn’t order (only noticed this the following day) but we were repeatedly asked “are you done?”. No doubt it’s busy, but we ordered heaps and felt unnecessarily rushed. Not to mention, we had 5 different waiters collecting dishes and interrupting every 5 minutes —it was truly bizarre. Perhaps the intention to be ‘on to it’ was taken too far. Either way, I won’t be coming back— twice a disappointment is quite enough. It’s a real shame because I do think the food is delicious.

I went to 1947 with my husband and friend as this place was recommended by a colleague of mine. Firstly, we were greeted well by the staff. The ambience is also great. We ordered the Bade Meiyan Chicken and Tawa Chicken for our mains. They were quite tasty with just the right spice and flavours - I’ve been to a few Indian restaurants in Auckland, and this is actually the best I’ve tasted. A big ups to the team at 1947 :)

Magical and enchanting. I had my heart set on this place and it was worth it. The 1947 Eatery was everything it promised. The atmosphere was great, the food was marvellous and the cocktails were unique. I would most definitely visit again and try some of their other dishes. Until next time. Gabriella

The butter chicken was fantastic, naan breads are freshly cooked, the starter of fries covered in butter chicken sauce and melted cheese didn't sound that appetizing but they were amazing. Goat curry was really good too - never had goat before so was a bit apprehensive at first, but will order again. Can't wait to go back. Service was good, nice happy people serving.

This place had the best service I have ever seen in such a long time, tasty food which is served hot and not luke warm and the ambiance was outstanding. Highly recommended for a great night out!

This place doesn't know how to cater to people it is written we close at 11 and at 10 30 they refuse me to cater by saying we are closed for the night and the next minute a couple comes and they cater to them it's just I was alone as I was on a business trip and in a foreign land if a Indian doesn't help an Indian I think this place is not worth the stars zomato has given them<br/>

Found this place via the Entertainment book. We ordered the Lamb Pepper Fry and Malai Kofta as the mains. Pleasantly surprised, we thought it was rather good. Tasty and smooth, with lots of meat. With the naan and rice, it was more than enough for both of us and we decided to take home what was left as we couldn't bear it go to waste. Worth going back some time.

We booked a table for 6 weeks in advance for my mums 50th birthday we arrived and they forgot our booking despite us receiving confirmation. There was no apology at all. We got seated on bar stools which were uncomfortable and not ideal for a dinner. Food was mediocre and overpriced for what it was. Would not recommend at all. Service also was rubbish and when we went to go pay they didn’t even ask how anything was or say good bye just put the eftpos payment through for us to swipe our card.

Food was amazing.<br/>We shared the malai chicken which was a decent portion and very tender <br/>The butter chicken was really good lots of chicken, but nothing special about it <br/>The naan and the samosa were both the best I have ever had definitely a must try<br/><br/>Setting and atmosphere was 10/10<br/><br/>Service was average and slow. I waited at least 15mins for my glass of wine. My 2nd glass I had to order at the bar because no waiter or waitress was serving us; after several attempts to get their attention<br/>

The business, the bees knees. Best way to describe the place/experience. Highly recommend it. Nothing to fault. Don't forget to order a long Island ice tea. #ForTheReaction

Delicious modern Indian food with an awesome cocktail menu. The Curry fries are a must try! Great attentive service too. Will definitely be back

Quite a hidden gem along Federal St. Good vibes and ambiance, the lighting set up a cozy mood for the customers. Staff were friendly and accommodating. Served us peanuts and water while waiting for our takeaways. Their Goat and Chicken Biryani was so far the best I have tried in Auckland. Price range $22+ but worth the price.Well done, would come back for more!! One happy customer ❀

Firstly, sorry I have no photos worth posting for 1947 as it was way too dark to take a good looking pic. I know when I read comments I'm looking for a good pic first.<br/>On that note, I'm not too old, 26 Yrs old and don't wear glasses or contacts yet and the "mood" lighting was way too dim for me to read the menu without squinting or looking like my mother holding it to my face to read.<br/>Other than that, the space was actually rather aesthetically very pleasing, giving a warm homey vibe.<br/>We were told we were on a time crunch and had to leave in 1.5 hrs for the next group (even though we pre booked a table). This is typically not an issue, however as there were 7 of us we ordered quite a bit of food, both from the entree (tandor) and main section. We were told items in the tandor section take a minimum of 30 min each dish so we said we were happy to have these served along with the mains to save time.<br/>Unfortunately they said they were unable to serve these together and they were literally served one at a time. (We had finished the one plate and it was cleared before the next was served).<br/>Aside from this, the service was very good, polite and attentive.<br/>The food was delish!! We ordered everything from the tandor section, the Chilli Chicken, a couple curries, a variety of naan's and the goat briyani which our server recommended Our 2 favs of the night were the Lamb Chops from the tandor (we ordered 2) and the Goat curry. My whole family does not typically like goat curry and this goat curry has now converted everyone. It's a very tasty dry curry, the goat was tender and not dry and tough at all. The lamb chops, wow marinade is so tasty and the char on it was so aromatic.<br/>Disclaimers - The Chilli Chicken has a 3 chilli heat rating and they were not kidding, it is not a mild spice!! Definitely need a bowl of rice and jug of water to go with.<br/>Secondly, the only dish we weren't happy with is the Bang bang butter chicken. This was way too sweet (as per standard butter chickens, not the authentic type) and certainly has no "bang bang" factor - don't let the name fool you as it did us.<br/>All in all, quite good but not worth the effort purposely going into town, finding and paying for ridiculous CBD parking rates just to eat here but definitely worth a try if you are already in town and just passing by.<br/>

I like the idea that the food is made freshly to order but the service is not quite right. We were a group of eight. They advised us that orders take at least 25 mins so we ordered straight away. The first dish arrived for eight of us. Two chicken thighs... a bit hard to share and no direction was given as to how to or what was good to order. When eventually all the food arrived it was quite nice. Unfortunately they also mucked up a drink order. Some improvements to be made but love the decor and concept and story. A bit disappointed as it could be so much more!

Delicious authentic food , ambience is fabulous..Chicken malai tikka is my fav, worth it. I cant resist myself to go again and again.<br/>Best service and friendly staff.<br/>I recommend this place to go if you want authentic and mouth watering Indian food.
Goddesswhahaha
Really happy with the meal we had here. After attending conference at Sky City Convention centre, this was a short walk away. We were very unfamiliar with the menu - there was nothing familiar ( tikka, masala, butter chicken etc), so we took a punt and were pleasantly surprised by all the items we ordered. Nothing was what we expected, but everything was delicious. Bread & Dip, samosa (deconstructed), chicken, all delicious. The only negative I have would be that we asked to sit in a booth, but were told they had all been booked, but while we were there from 6.30 til almost 9pm, 3 of the booths had no patrons occupying them.<br/>Thanks
Lilly Christine
A great indian resturant! Restaurant its self was buzzing with warm lighting and great atmosphere. Staff were really attentive. Food was amazing, very flavorsome and presented well. Cocktails were also amazing but pricey as cocktails are! If you love Indian food would defiantly recommend this place!!!

First time here, mum wanted to go somewhere different (other than paradise), heard good things about this place so why not. Staff here are great, waiter gave us a good run down and the waitress was great, cracked a couple jokes here and there which was great. Food amazing, one of the best butter chicken dishes I've had, the Bade Miyan chicken was also great, the Biryani was different (appearance wise) and thought it was delivered to the wrong table but once going through the dough lid, it was very nice. The drink I had was called 'Charred Night', loved it. Overall a great experience, I'd definitely dine here again, thanks for the experience.
Pradashnee Odiar
The food was presented great but the flavours were very minimal and some spices/seasoning were overpowering than others. The rustic setup was lovely but there was no warm or welcoming feeling when you entered. Overall a mediocre experience.
Susan
So disappointing. Food was average and worst mango lassi ever. However, it was the service when we came to pay that ruined our experience and is the basis for my rating. Don’t bother going here to use your Entertainment Gold Card because they won’t honour the fact they’re in there and that you’re meant to get a free main upon presentation of your card. They claim they have no knowledge of this. REALLY!? We spent $143 there this afternoon and were excited that we could take advantage of our Entertainment Book membership and get a main for free (we ordered three mains, plus starters, naan and drinks). On principle, you shouldn’t be part of the Entertainment Book if you aren’t going to act with integrity and honour the fact that you’re in the book advertising something that you obviously don’t want to be part of. I definitely won’t be back and will not be recommending that any one else dines here either!

We heard good things about 1947 and missed the outing here with our mates a few months ago as we were overseas , nonetheless we managed to get here to try it out. First of all it’s tricky to get parking around the area unless you park at sky city which is not too far away and note the Carpark opposite the restaurant is not for the public , we managed to find out around the corner after a few rounds the block. When we arrived we were suggested the couches which had low tables or the tandoori high round table but were luck when there’s a spare high table and chairs by the window become available as we were deciding . It took forever for our food and drinks to arrive and when the tandoori chicken finally arrived , we waiting again for the rice to arrive and also our drinks / wine to turn up. After the other main dish curry chicken with egg & garlic naan arrived , it was all gravy and we couldn’t finish it and waitress kept coming over to clear our dishes and asked how our meals were which we replied it was great ! Overall a nice experience with local Indian diners too but the food could arrive at the same time as the rice and naan rather than waiting for each one on a piecemeal basis, also drinks can be served a lot quicker as well . We understand it was a busy ish Sunday night but we will be back !

Indian Food finally meets "Freedom".<br/>In the western world Indian food is associated with cheap take-away style Curry Houses. At best it is a cheap eat with greasy, cream laden, sweet so called Curries<br/>That is what makes 1947 different. It has stayed true to its root yet not shy-ied away from being modern, either with the dishes, presentation or taste.<br/>The starters are tasty, authentic and classy. So are the mains and cocktails. There is a competition going for the home-made G&T. Try them out, you may even be lucky. The service is great, Arandith was exceptional. God Bless him<br/>Dont be shy to seek Freedom, try 1947, you will love it

The ambience of this place gives you an authentic indian feel. The lightings and interior is pretty comforting and the service is good too. I would highly recommend the Malai Chicken because it is the best Malai Chicken I have ever had in my entire life. This sentence might seem over exaggerated but honestly I tried ordering the same dish when I went back to India but trust me, nothing tastes as good as this one. It probably is a bit expensive as you only get 4 medium pieces in $16 but you should definitely give it a try irrespective of the price. This is something you just can't miss!!!
Sunvi Ahsan
Great ambiance, great taste, freshly cooked and really amazing selection of food. Customer service is 5 star! Highly recommended. Music was also calm and relaxed. Not the typical type which pushes you to leave sooner. This place will make you feel home.
Bhavya
Been here twice, and enjoyed the food both times. I was pleasantly surprised with the tandoori salmon I ordered the last time - it was really flavourful and tasty, and not spicy so for those who like Indian flavours bar the spice, I’d definitely recommend this dish! Ambiance is really good with nice dim lighting and decent music
Jonathan Bangera
Words can’t describe how much I fell in love with this place. Everything for me was perfection to the tee. The ambience felt like I was actually in India .. and the food just complimented it to the fullest. Yes it was the other way round here. The tandoor section is just lip smacking tasty. And don’t even get me started in the Jalebi... haven’t had one so distinctly streetwise until now here in Auckland. If you love India and all about it ... please please do not fail to give this place a second glance on your way down federal street.

If you are after a good experience then don't bother to go to this place. Food is average, not authentic Indian. Time taken to serve too long and attitude of staff is worst. <br/><br/>It took about 90 minutes to serve the food and the attitude of wait staff and the Restaurant manager was really bad. We weren't even served extra Naan as we were told that they don't know how long it will take to serve, forcing us to leave mid meal.<br/><br/>Email to management didn't do any good either. Their response is standard that it takes long to serve the meal and not taking any ownership for ruining our night.<br/><br/>Definitely not coming back ever !!<br/><br/>Food - 3<br/><br/>Time to server - 1<br/><br/>Attitude of staff - 0

This is definitely one of my favorite Indian restaurants in Auckland.<br/><br/>I love the 1947 theme and the mood lighting. The servers are some of the friendliest people that you will ever meet, who are genuinely passionate about their food.<br/><br/>Although on the pricier side, I strongly recommend their cocktails. They deliver a punch of flavours, as well as theatre. <br/><br/>Food wise everything I’ve tried here had just been amazing. Their cheese naans were super soft and buttery and loaded with stringy cheese. Their popcorn chicken and masala fries are great for sharing. And their mains are absolutely show-stoppers. I loved the butter chicken - it had huge chunks of tender chicken, the sauce was rich and creamy, and definitely had a huge kick :) And the price of the food was surprisingly reasonable for what you get! <br/><br/>The perfect place to visit for a good time over dinner and drinks.

Dine in after work here ! Staff are really amazing seriously! Well knowledgeable when it comes the menu , and it catches everyone’s attention i’am very impressed to my server i forget her name but she got the curly hair ‘(ooops!😜) the ambiance of the place is fantastic value for money yes yes yes!! Tandoori chicken, presentation of the chicken biryani , cocktails and the desserts is amazing i will totally comeback to this place 1947 the independence day of india , so happy i came here after my world war at my work place

Absolutely Awesome!Decorated with 1947 Indian theme with a rickshaw to welcomes you, clean and quiet with friendly staff serving authentic Indian food in less brighten lights. If you want to try Indian food, this is the place with delicious taste. The food is creatively less in quantity, however the quality you will not forget. Honestly, you want to go again for that exclusive taste you have in the serene environment.Recommendation: Start with Chilli Chicken.

Would definitely recommend this place. Food and ambience Really Good. Best thing is that they don’t add any Food colour. Would highly recommend trying their Carrot pudding and Currie Chips. Overall we had good time and it was worth spending $$..

Food was awesome, I would say best Indian food I have had in my 17 years stay in Nz. However was not impressed by the sitting arrangement, there were 13 of us , in spite of booking early we were given a cabin like closed sitting area with no aircon which made it hot and stuffy . We had to wait for the food for long time which made the experience even worse. My advice keep the closed dining area for smaller groups and leave the open dining area for larger groups like us. Still giving you 3.5 even though food was awesome, the food service and sitting arrangements put us off .cc

Went here after getting recommendations from friends. <br/><br/>Food- we ordered the malai kebab, kakori kebab, dal makhani, butter naans and rumali roti. The malai kebab was good and the chicken cooked well. The kakori kebab I found a bit dry. Would have been nicer to get the mint chutney on the side rather than it sitting as garnish below the kebabs!<br/>The naans while soft, I found surprisingly sweet. The rumali was way better. <br/>Dal makhani- standard stuff. <br/><br/>Drinks- I ordered the salted caramel lassi. It sounded good on paper, not so much in practice!<br/><br/>Ambience- not too bad, bit on the dark, dull side though. <br/><br/>Price - The portions were small for the price charged. Our meal for two with one drink cost $75. <br/><br/>Overall- worth a try but I probably wouldn’t go back.

1947 was recommended to us by a lot of people and so we were quite excited to go to this place. Being from India it's quite hard to get authentic food here so we were all the more stoked as this is what the description and menu promised. We ordered a Pav Bhaji, keema pav, kakori kabab and a Bade Miyan chicken. For starters, the quantity was quite less compared to the price being charged. I understand its a fine dining restaurant but having been to a few fancy Indian restaurants the quantity was definitely the least of all of them. Secondly, I'm not quite sure about the claims for authenticity. The food tasted alright, however it was more leaning towards the bland side. Now I must clarify we didn't go in expecting spicy food but Indian food has got to be flavorsome. Not necessarily hot, but the different spices and ingredients that go into any Indian dish create a unique flavor which was lacking here. I can see my friend has made a similar comment about the flavor and the reply was 1947 do not add chilli just to increase spice but that's not what we are asking here, it was just not flavorsome. And while I'm not qualified to speak about the exact authentic taste of say a keema pav (in spite of having eaten it at countless Irani, Muslim and Hyderabadi restaurants back home), being from Mumbai I'd like to think of myself as qualified to comment about the authenticity of Pav Bhaji. Sorry to say but that is not how pav bhaji tastes at all, especially if the menu claims it is beach style. <br/><br/>Some good points - the ambience was quite nice, it was a pleasant surprise to see a rickshaw after ages. The service and staff were friendly and helpful. <br/><br/>In summary, not a bad experience. Okayish food which is overpriced for the taste and quantity. If it wasn't for the authenticity claims (which was on the menu, said out loud to you when you enter and are seated at a table etc) I'd rate the restaurant better.

Tried 1947 Eatery for dinner today. The decor is really cool and does give Indian 1947 vibes. They also have a cool rickshaw(four wheeler in India) I find the food was good. The prices are a little more towards expensive side given that the portion sizes are smaller. However, we were sharing the food. If you’re individually ordering your own dish the portion size is more than enough. The taste is authentic and they didn’t add any colouring to it since that’s their theme. However, the butter chicken was still sweet. Haha! You can’t change that anywhere in Nz. We also ordered Pav Bhaji, which is not in the pictures but the Bhaji(curry) was so less compared to the bread(pav). The goat biryani was covered with bread on top it which was pretty cool! My only complain would be that the portion sizes are small and the they should maybe increase the portion for bhaji in pav-bhaji. Other than that, the food is delicious and the service was excellent. :)

A fine dine and a pleasant ambiance. The place offers authentic Indian taste. Staff is quite friendly and generous. I had a cough so I asked for something hot cocktail and they served me a brandy with warm water which actually helped me to sooth my throat. We ordered chilli chicken which was by far the most delicious we had in Auckland. The choice of cutlery is quite unique - especially it was nostalgic for us. If you are a fan of Jalebi Rabadi then don’t miss the dessert menu! We felt lack of rabadi, however, it was mouth watering. Of course, the place is expensive but it’s worth it if you admire good food!

Service was great. Food was great. Ambiance was great. Everything was great. Definitely coming back here to try more on their menu 👌<br/><br/>I recommend calling in to book a table because they can be busy.

Amazing place with amazing food, amazing presentation and service. It was my 1st time at 1947 and I loved it. So as soon as I entered with a friend, I was welcomed by the staff with a smile and made sure I felt comfortable. To start of with they handed me the menu with some kurkure to munch on while I decide what to order. I found that very unique and impressive. My friend decided that she wanted to have pav bhaji but I was still struggling to decide what to order as I did not want to order any main course because I wasn't that hungry and the staff made sure they gave me my space by not approaching again again and gave me time to decide. I finally decided on keema pav and coke and the glass they served me coke in was so cool. I had enough kurkure to munch on till I got my food and after it arrived on my table I was a little disappointed by looking at the quantity for paying 14 dollars I guess but when I had the 1st bite, I understood that its worth the money. I am from India and trust me I have eaten keema pav at a lot of places but finding such amazing keema pav and that also in Auckland just blow my mind. The staff did ask me in between if the food was fine and if I need anything. I wish I could express how much I loved it and same goes for my friend who had pav bhaji. Well she's been here before and suggested me this place. Usually she's the Queen of bad decisions but this time she was right. I don't usually write reviews as my writing skills are not the best but this place definitely deserved it. Will visit soon.

This restaurant is all talks and no action. They’ve got all the basics wrong. I’ve never seen such a huge gap between pricing, quantity and quality. All the fancy names of their dishes and the stories about the restaurant were all just a gimmick to woo customers. Before placing the order we asked them if they could make the dishes more spicy but they said that they can’t as it would spoil the ‘authenticity’ of the dish. The drastically underwhelming quantity of food arrived and after tasting all our hopes started going downhill. It was no where close to being ‘authentic’. Pav bhaji was an insult to any pav bhaji that is ever made. Kheema Pav looked like a dessert. Kakori Kabab had hardly any spices and was all fancy to look but was hardly anything special. Even the menu for the mains had words like ‘spicy, tangy, rich‘ etc but it was absolutely bland and sweet! Like I said before, fancy names in the menu but end product was zero! Will never recommend it to anyone and obviously never go there again!

Went for my birthday dinner with Nabeel Deen and did not regret it. From the service to food.. everything was amazing. We had the naughty aunty mocktail, mango lassi, chefs special lamb, malai chicken and cheese and garlic naan. All was perfect. Great experience and would recommend to everyone. Will surely be going back soon!
Sean Stephens
The ambiance was great and the staff were extremely friendly but I thought the food was good but not great. Had the Pav, the spicy corn, and peppered lamb. The Smokey cocktails were quite tasty and I would definitely go again if I was in the area but wouldn't make a special trip to do so.
Tenz
Great service. The chicken was real dry and tasted more like what you normally get in a Korean restaurant. Paneer Tikka was great. Cocktail was $23 for two but I think the extra cost went into the two glasses it came with. Butter naan = amazeballs!! Paneer tikka + chilli chicken + 3 butter nann + one rasberry mint cocktail jug + bottle still water = $68 😅
Sherry
Tandoori chicken and roti was pretty much good but lamb beryani was terrible. Full of spices and bones. Not much lamb in there tbh. The rice didn’t taste good either.

Visited couple weeks ago in November. Like the ambience and interesting story around how it came into existence. Quick service. I would have loved to see some more options on the menu. Overall great experience and would recommend for special moments.

Food as good but the qty not for the price they charge specially navabi aloo they give only three small pcs for $ 14 đŸ˜©đŸ˜© think before u go!<br/><br/>

Loved the ambience...vegetarian friendly...one of the best Indian foods to try..delicious dahi kebabs. Paneer was a bit hard for our liking. Overall worth visiting and great service.

I visited 1947 eatery last night for the first time and the service and food was beyond my expectation. The curry chips were definitely my favourite, I also tried the chicken biryani and it was very delicious. Can't wait to come back again and try out the rest of the menu :)

Went here for the first time with some friends. Was happy about the service. really nice friendly staff. Food was amazingly good. Tried the curry chips and chilli chicken and loved it. Had butter chicken and was soooo happy. The only thing I found odd was that the rice had to be ordered separately as it wasn't included with the curry but I found it overall really good.
Shihana
Damn!! Definitely the best Indian food in town. The service is just amazing and very welcoming. The ambiance is just there to make you feel like you are in a luxury Indian restaurant. The chicken tikka masala is a must try
Wainisi Waicere
Great customer service and extremely friendly staff. The food didn’t take too long and the cocktails were amazing!! I would definitely go here again

This is one of the most family-friendly yet good-youthful-social-vibe place I have reviewed till date. With a location at the heart of the city and internal design and ambience to be top notch, I genuinely enjoyed the service that I was given (that too on a Friday night!!)<br/><br/>We ordered the Mango Fizzer and White Lies mocktails (great tasting) as well as Lamb Seesh Kebabs, Vegetarian Manchurian, Vada Pav, Dhaal Makhani, Butter Chicken, Bhengan Bhartha and Butter Naans. The food took it’s time, however before ordering, we were explained to by an amazing German waitress that the food is authentic and fresh so only made when ordered, hence why it may take time. Not only did we finish all that we ordered, we in fact ordered more for takeaways! Unfortunately I missed taking some pictures of the mains.<br/><br/>The price was actually quite worth it considering the portion sizes of the dishes!<br/><br/>I was slightly disappointed that the kitchen closed at 10pm on a Friday night in a location based at the heart of the city (opposite the Sky Tower) and there is a very rare chance to find on-street parking.<br/><br/>All in all, you can expect to see me back here again! This is my new favourite Indian restaurant in town!
Jesse Metcalfe
My first time visiting 1947 and I had the best experience. I tried the Tandoori chicken, it was smokey and delicious; the lamb pepper fry was rich with really tender bits of meat and the 'wannabe drumsticks' were a perfect apatiser with generous portions for a starter. We had really good service to top it off. Will definitely be back.
Bhagyesh Prabhumirashi
been here few times recently went here ordered Vada pav, Malai kofta with Rumali roti and salted caramel lassi.vada pav was tasty however the amount of chutney in vada pa was too much which made my pav( bread roll) soggy. Malai Kofta was delicious, soft and fresh. rumali roti was hot and soft when served. Salted caramel lassi is must try. overall it was a good experience and worth money.
Aats Rockbottom
<br/>I had the pav bhaji here and its was really good. Quiet ambience and clean place. The service is good as well as the people. The lighting needs a little work on it. Overall ill give the place a 4.5 as i thought the place still needs work on it.
Amy Brar
Completely wowed me. It has very authentic flavours and outrageously tasty, the staff are also really good and so is the atmosphere. Very good value for money as well. I must say it is the best. Very much worth it.

Came here for dinner and the super friendly staff made us feel very welcomed. The ambience & vibe at this restaurant is quite warm and positive. <br/><br/><br/>Starters- <br/>‱ Chilli Chicken: Amazing taste and very well cooked.<br/><br/>‱ Chicken Lollipops- Super disappointing. Overly fried with no dominant flavour. <br/><br/>‱ Grapefruit, rose & mint drink- Absolutely had no taste and just tasted like soda water. Would definitely not recommend! <br/><br/>Mains-<br/>‱ Butter Chicken- An authentic taste and flavour but however I felt like the chicken was off.<br/><br/>‱ Lacha Parantha & Rumali Roti- Very well made! Soft & flavourful.<br/><br/>Dessert- <br/>‱ Chia seed Rabri Falooda- A very flavourful & delicate dish. Loved the taste!

The presentation of their cocktails is exceptional. Nice Indian restaurant with good food and vibe. Service a bit of let down otherwise a favourable place for casual dining .<br/><br/>Must try: Cold blood cocktail

Came here for a friends birthday, I didn’t know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised!! Everything was perfect, couldn’t fault anything. The service was immaculate (and patient with a big indecisive group!), food was cooked fresh from order as we were briefed at the beginning of our experience, and the atmosphere was cool yet inviting. Our table all had a big helping of the curry fries - basically chips drenched with a buttery curry sauce and cheese - SO YUM. The cocktails are also a must - I ordered the Longest Island Iced Tea, and they didn’t disappoint, it was huge. Worth a visit, definitely dining again.

Nice in taste give authentic indian food. Good place with good concept and good service i have visited many time every thing is perfect every time so keep it up guys

Came here for a bite after work and being the only customers there at the time was a bit strange, as what followed was nothing short of great food and informative service. The dry goat curry made to order was absolutely fantastic, visions of how tender that goat was still visit me to the day, chicken malai was excellent smokey flavours to follow with a punch of spice and aroma! Lamb biryani was not to my tastebuds how ever my friend quite enjoyed it and if you were well into fragrant and spiced rice I could see this being an enjoyable dish as well. Salted caramel lassi! Boom! That's all I have to say about that one, do not let yourself down by not ordering this drink

We were planning on having a family dinner and were very very disappointed with the restaurant's response that since we are a group of 15 we would Not have access to their full menu.<br/>We were offered a very limited 3 or 4 dishes Set menu. Not negotiable!<br/>Also were told there will be a deposit of $150 and if even one person drops out we will forfeit the deposit. We agreed to this condition but not the set menu.<br/>We decided to go elsewhere...<br/>I think they have to be flexible and hope they take this as positive feedback

Went for dinner today with my friends, we all being Indian enjoyed the fabulous explanation of the restaurant and it's history in detail that too by a foreigner for us, her name is Lena. She just made everything special for us right from the start she explained the culture of the restaurant and the way in which food is prepared in the restaurant. She made sure everyone is happy by the food which is served by asking everyone how was the food and do you like it or no. It was the best experience we'll come back soon only to get served from Lena!!!

I really wanted to love this place, partly because they have a few dishes on the menu that you do not see at many other Indian restaurants in Auckland and partly because the atmosphere is really nice (apart from the music - very random). The Pav Bhaji is absolutely delicious everytime. Unfortunately everything else I have tried was just ok - not bad, but not great either. The bade miyan chicken is supposed to be spicy, but it came out as nothing more than mild - tasty though it was. The lamb shank nihaari and dry goat curry both had quite a rich gravy and were lacking in both spice and flavour. Again, none of it was bad, but not great either - just ok. It almost feels like they are trying adapt the food to be less authentic Indian and more European. I love authentic Indian food, there is nothing about it that needs to be changed or adapted. Either way, try this restaurant at least once, have the Pav Bhaji and make up your own opinion about everything else.

I went to the 1947 eatery last night and i m usually not a big fan of indian dining.. but this one will change your mind. The menu is not big but there are selected options to choose from.. some of the best selections of food from metro cities of India. The chilli chicken was the best I had so far in New Zealand. Rumali roti is a must try aince no other Indian restuarant offers it. Beautiful food, elegant ambience super friendly staff. You will be looked after well.<br/>

The food at  1947 is out of this world, the staff and service really enhance this experience to another level. This restaurant has a fun and laid back vibe. The staff all make jokes and are ready to smile and take care of you wherever possible. They are all genuine people who clearly love helping make your experience all it can be. <br/>Yes it is little expensive, but I would not hesitate a moment to go again, this isn't just about eating a dinner it's a full dinning experience. The quality of food that they provide is worth spending your money. The textures, colours and flavors were something I've never experienced before. Each dish was highly individual and superbly put together. Very original in most cases and not to mention delicately constructed. We are planning to head out there again, definitely.

1947 eatery one of the best place to hangout with friends. You will get high standard service with classic appetisers.<br/>A must go place in town.

Saturday evening 7pm<br/><br/>Food 5/5<br/>Service 5/5<br/>Atmosphere 5/5<br/>Flexibility 0/5<br/><br/>Great place from when you step in the door. Servers know the menu and are very helpful.drinks are great.some cocktails even come with dry ice for theatre. The fit out and and styling is very cool.<br/><br/>The servers explain that everything is freshly made from scratch and can take a little while to prepare. They are very attentive and constantly fill your water while you wait.<br/><br/>It is a little unclear whether they take bookings. Over the phone they insisted they never do. First thing they asked when we arrived was whether we had a reservation. When I asked about this apparently they were very busy that evening and decided to take bookings.<br/><br/>Other thing is that the menu says they will do their best cater to intolerance or allergies but there may always be trace amounts. In fact the chef is not prepared to vary the menu for any reason. At all. So if you want to change the level of chilli, this is not possible. If you want to remove anything you are allergic to, this is not possible. They are happy to suggest alternatives but apparently any changes would compromise the taste too much and they are not prepared to compromise the taste. For me that was the bread. There was nothing else I was able to eat.<br/><br/>It was good bread though...

Friendly staff with very nice customer service. The foods was really nice and filling. The atmosphere was really nice and it represented the purpose of the restaurant

I would appreciate the efforts of people who have designed the whole place keeping the Indian touch to every thing in detail. <br/>Service was Good, Food was Great.<br/>Would recommend it to anyone who is looking to enjoy the authentic Indian food.

Best authentic indian food so far in auckland. Great decor, service and food quality. I have been here few times, the only disappointing part is to wait once you have ordered as it does take a while. Well there is a saying patience always pay off.<br/><br/>I would definitely recommend anyone to give a try once. A bit pricey on few items. Only recommendation is to improve the service times.<br/>

Love this new place in the heart of the city, sort of hidden in cul de sac of the other end of federal street <br/>My ever fav is Bang Bang Chick & bharta with aperitif being bombay mule !<br/><br/>✹Ambience - 9.5/10<br/>đŸ„˜Food - 9.5/10<br/>👹‍🍳Service - 10/10

I went with a group of friends and we ordered the samosa chaat, the tawa chicken, butter chicken, the kofta with naan. The positive was the soft naan and the tawa chicken. With regards to the samosa chaat, now I'm from Mumbai and I love my chaat but the one that we ordered wasn't upto the mark and I personally wouldn't order it again. The kofta could have been eaten like a desert as it was so very sweet. I've eaten koftas at other places too but never ever eaten anything this sweet. The butter chicken we ordered wasn't great either. All in all I would personally not go there again for the food but would probably go for the look and feel of the place.

Love the atmosphere and vibe of 1947! Have been here numerous times for both food and drinks! Such a cool place to sit on the couches and have cocktails. Drinks were amazing and staff helped with deciding on what to try. <br/>Food was delicious, definitely best Indian food in Auckland! Love this place đŸ™ŒđŸŒ

1947 Eatery, you are what the Auckland foodie scene has been waiting for, from a Curry Connoisseur I'd have to say you're the best in town. The lamb chops to the samosa chaat, the tava chicken, the gram worthy cocktails and those glorious cheese and garlic naans. I love that 1947 caters to all occasions from informal drinks and nibbles, to a quickie at lunch time, to a full blown dinner to impress even your pickiest friends, the vibes and atmosphere are just so welcoming you could go anytime of the day. You're a game changer 1947, we love you!

Best Indian restaurant ever. Food was perfection. Good quantity and best quality authentic tasty dishes. Just WOW. Wait can be bit long as they are always busy but everything was worth the wait. And our server was very nice with good knowledge of menu and there food. Overall a 10/10 experience. Will visit again.

Poor!! We called them for reservation and they said we can just come in without and they will accommodate.. when we <br/>Went, the worst ever sitting was given. When asked to change, they said they have nothing else and we see 2 -3 seats vacant!!<br/>Food was ok but the service was worst ever.. the vater's come to see you after every 5 minutes which is annoying when u r having food... It feels like they want you to finish your food and just go... I won't recommend this place to anyone... The sitting is quite uncomfortable.. u can get better Indian food somewhere else,,,food is just ok nothing special! <br/><br/>Still want to try...go u would understand what I am saying

Food was great, flavours and time it took to come to was all good. The samosa chaat was especially an explosion of flavour. Nice atmosphere , a little dark but it seems to be a part of the theme. The only downfall I found was that when we asked to make the food spicy apparently "it alters the flavour". Although a mild experience - flavours were nice :P but not a place to get your chilli fix. Overall 4/5.

Firstly ambiance is very beautifully designed. They have a Auto Rickshaw displayed at the entrance and specially when a mumbaikar sees it draws back all those beautiful memories . Mutton biryani very nicely presented covered with a dove taste wise very authentic also chilli chicken was great. Pricing is a bit high but I don't mind as it is the quality they cater for is Top class. Specially mentioning the staff member who looked after us very nicely his name Arandhit Thanks

After wanting to go here for ages, I finally made it and I loved it! The food is free of additives and super tasty 😄 will definitely be back!

You are what Auckland needs! Really upping that Indian Restaurant game. Love the ambience and how nice the restaurant smells. It really shows how amazing Indian food is. The best part - an Indian eatery that does not play cheap bollywood music videos or instrumental love songs. <br/><br/>At the beginning of your meal your waiter informs you of a 15-20 min wait time as all dishes are made to order. <br/><br/>The tandoor dishes are my personal favourite along with the Chilly Chicken, Goat Curry and Paneer Lababdaar. Fantastic flavours. <br/><br/>Cocktails are bomb!!!! Bombay Mule, Longest LIT, Eternal Affair, Sharabi Chai - Yummmm!!!

Usually I am lazy and won't take the pain of writhing a review for restaurants, but this one is different cause finally an Indian restaurant that serves delicious and freshly prepared Indian food, not some frozen and microwaved sauce prepared 10 days ago and to make it worse on the day tossed with some meat along with heaps of cream. Unfortunately that's what the western world has been fooled into believing what Indian food is. So if you really wish to taste real Indian food, fortunately and unfortunately this is the only place in Auckland where you can get the real buck for your money. <br/>I've been to the restaurant more than 10 times ( you can imagine how much I love the food here ) and have tried almost all the dishes. So you can trust me with this review. <br/>All the dishes are flavoursome and very well presented. They have very cleverly put together a menu which brings the best selection of dishes, one better than the other and still suits both Indian and western palate. <br/>The must try dishes are kheema Pav, samolina fish and lamb chops. The Goat curry and lamb shank are unlike I've ever tried in Indian restaurants and definitely my favourite mains. <br/>For vegetarians - must try is Dahi Kababs, Pav Bhaji and the street Samosa chat. My fav vegetarian mains are Daal Makhani ( authentic Indian flavour), Saag Paneer and Malai Kofta. <br/><br/>To top it all their drinks are just beautiful. Very good selection of spirits and cocktails. Cocktails have a very catchy presentation. Must try - Cold blood and Bombay mule. <br/><br/>Areas of Improvement- <br/>The Long Island cocktail is either a bit too sweet or has less alcohol. But the presentation was rockstar. <br/>Furthermore would love to see more deserts added to the menu, but again have been told that they make the deserts fresh daily, hence the limited selection.<br/><br/>In all, undoubtedly the best Indian eatery in Auckland. A must visit. Will definitely keep visiting.

Went there on a  Sunday evening, the place was not overly crowded. Ambiance is cozy and warm. Polite staff. They give you a brief intro to the restaurant which is good for the first timers.<br/>Tried the Dahi Kebab for first time and must say a big fan of it now. Chilli Chicken and the Chips with butter chicken sauce was a delicacy. Chilli chicken was hot as it is supposed to be and they have that rated in the menu as well.<br/>Ordered drinks Bitter Apricot, and some lassi. All tasted real good.<br/>Main course, had Butter Chilli fish ,tawa chicken, paneer saag. All items tasted delicious. <br/>Only negative point is that the waiters doesn't seem experienced.  They got the food before the plates and we had to wait which I think they will improve with time. <br/>Otherwise all well. Will go another time for sure.

Great food, well priced, have been here with friends and then family and perfectly suited for both occasions, so far have tried eight things off the menu and yet to have something bad<br/>

Good with the new menu.<br/>Dishes are good, but not consistent everytime for same taste and flavours. <br/>Pav bhaji is really good.<br/>Peanuts on table should be more roasted.

Visited yesterday to this place named as 1947 Eatery<br/>i had visited this place earlier as its name was Handi and it was way better than this recently changed resto. Menu was good ambience was dark music was ok ok.<br/>One of my friend she had just came here for couple of days. she wanted to have indian spicy food and than in my mind it directly recalled about this place handi but than we got to know that its name is been changed so we thought of giving a try.<br/>we orderd kheema paav, goat curry, chicken curry, with roti and biryani but when the food arrived we din expect the quantity of the food would be so less according to the price in $12 kheema pav served in very small little cup with kheema and two pav. Well to be frankly speaking i din enjoy and my friend also got upset if you compare any other restaurants the portion size is good they offer whether they charge more ill give rating of 10/4 food taste was good but quantity was less and the order taker also did not give the spicy chutney to my friend she wanted to have spicy chicken curry but the order taker said that they dont prepare spicy food as compared to indian dish. And restaurant was not much busy only 2 tables were occupied but then too we need to raise our hand to get something<br/>SAD!! but will not suggest anyone to visit coz its not worth your hard earn money to spend on small quantity food.

So a place which was much needed to showcase what exactly Indian fusion is all about I've been here twice and totally love the ambience, the food, cocktail and everything about this place to be <br/>I went here on lunch with my family on Saturday, me being a chicken lover ordered for wanna be drumsticks which is actually chicken lollipop for entree and tava chicken for mains which reminded me of food back home in Mumbai. The sauce went well with the chicken lollipop and tabs chicken had that bit of sweet and sour flavour which is needed in a dish like that my family members are pure vegetarian so they ordered for stuffed mushroom and Manchurian for entree which had all the flavours which was needed but if asked to select among two veg entree I would select mushroom as it had good flavours good portion size and loved the mint sauce that went with it, rumali roti was bang on and in cocktail I had ordered for Bombay mule which had that mint flavour and a suttle vodka flavour which went very well and specially in the copper glass in which it was served. Good staff who greeted us nicely and checked again and again if everything is alrite, totally loved it and would be back again definately <br/>Keep up the good work guys

Went here on a Friday night, had a booking 5 people. The staff were really friendly they explained in detail about the menu and style of food served. <br/>We had pretty much every dish on the small dishes section. All of them tasted great. The keema pav and chilli chicken where the highlight . Tried a couple of drinks the Sharabi Chai and gulabo, both we enjoyed. <br/>The mains where slightly disappointing. Especially the chicken tikka masala had a spice rating to 2 chilles but still was sweet. The Onion kulcha was good to go with the curries. <br/>Overall liked the food but its slightly on the costiler side and portion size might feel small , surely will visit again.

Great stuff:<br/>The interior is amazing and the seating space is very carefully detailed. It has zones with lounge feel and family tables as well. There are lot of elements from Indian culture and it blends in nicely. The service was great. Their wait staff is quite good - always around to help you.<br/><br/>Not so great stuff:<br/>The food. The food's taste is not up to the mark - need more flavour in the items listed. Their menu is anyways limited to few choices. So really the flavour has to stand out! Also quantity, its too small for the price charged. I don't expect a takeaway kind of quantity but at least it should suffice. You have to ask for chutneys etc. That should all be served with food as it complements the taste. I think the chef is trying to follow the tiny portions style but it is not working.<br/><br/>The food is their weakest point and really needs a massive boost if they need to survive in the market that has established players with better food taste and value for money.<br/><br/>Overall, its okay - worth a visit. The owners have put in a lot of hard work and detailing.

Went for a family dinner!! Great service and ambience! The food was delicious and was served quick ! The quantity is less for price however. Other than that its a must visit place.

Great food and an awesome ambiance. Would love to visit 1947 Eatery several times. Looking at the employees inside the restaurant it gives a great feeling that they really love to serve and are truly courteous. I enjoyed the great food. Thanks

Where to start???<br/>Fari, (sorry if I forgot the name or misspelled it) thank you for your loyal services. Been here for a dinner with friends. We were 5 and given a high table which we felt uncomfortable and requested for a change of table. Without hesitation, the table was changed immediately and recommendations were provided to order food. <br/>Menu was explained briefly and ordered biryani, gravies, Indian breads, starters. Food was neatly plated and served. Taste was excellent. But the quantity could be better compared to price and other restaurants nearby. Though our gravy bowl was only 3/4th not full of gravy.<br/>Ambience is fine. Spacious restaurant. Will revisit soon. Also recommend to others.<br/><br/>Thank you team 1947 Eatery, for great food and exceptional service.

i would say its the best indian restaurant in the city. i ordered the tawa chicken . it was perfectly made chicken was juicy . and service is also perfect . good concept of 1947

The place was Handi before...thats why we were put off from going here..however we saw new decor and wanted to test out...food to our delight was very Indian and not colored and creamy...we ordered stuffed mushrooms..this was yum...butter chicken..which was very nice and tawa chicken which was good too..roti were well done too...negatives....price ..no parking and dark lights..and yes curries are $18 without rice??.....concept is coul..however peanuts....naah i dont think that matches the setup....

Wonderful food and great ambience!<br/><br/>Food: we ordered Spiced corn and pav bhaji for starters, both were very good. For the main course we ordered Paneer Tikka Lababdaar, rumali roti, garlic Naana nd jeera rice (curry don't come with rice). The paneer was yummy and flavours were extremely good. The Naan was soft and tasty. Highly recommend the food here. No complaints at all!<br/><br/>Service: lovely courteous staff who promptly took our order, the food arrived at a good time. But there was no crowd when we went so needs to be seen when the restaurant is booked. The food is reasonably priced.<br/><br/>Location: situated in the heart of Auckland central close to sky city. Very easy to spot<br/><br/>Ambience: One of the best things about this place is the ambience. An Indian style auto greets you as you enter.

Went to this place yesterday with a bunch of workmates. One of the best food & service experience (specially for an Indian restaurant) in Auckland. Most of them are so monotonous but this place is definitely class apart, the interiors are earthy toned and classy. The music and ambience is very modern so it's sets the mood well. We started with small orders of Chilli Chicken & Butter Chicken Curry Fries which was spicy & flavourful. <br/>For the mains we ordered the Butter Chilli Fish, Tawa Chicken, Butter Chicken & Malai Chicken (I was well informed by the server that the tandoor dishes take 25-30 mins to be ready as its cooked on order) & Dry Goat Curry all accompanied with portions of Cheese Garlic Naan/ Tandoori Rotis & my favourite Rumali Roti. <br/>Food overall- par excellent as everything was spiced perfectly, luscious and succulent meat, all out food came out hot and at the same time and i guess personally the fact that there was no colour or preservatives added in it was an added bonus. <br/>Special mention for Izzi (hope i spelt her name right) she was our server for the night she was so friendly, well informed and the fact that al of the wait staff were so welcoming. I will highly recommend this place for Lunch and/or Dinner outing. <br/>

I decided to go to this restaurant when I saw roomali roti on the menu.... the food reminded me of India and their entree dahi kebab is a must try ... loved the serve ware ... we absolutely enjoyed the food

To start off with, please do not walk into this place. It's always good to have a reservation, specially if you're a group of people, because it's such a busy street.<br/>Stunning ambience, amazing and friendly staff. Quick service and great food. We were about 7 people, so there was nothing on the menu we did not order. And everything turned out to be delicious. The place honestly is a little heavy on the pocket, especially if you're a group of people or family (but again it's on Federal St, I wouldn't expect any less) Some of the great dishes from our visit:<br/>Chilli Chicken<br/>Veg Manchurian<br/>Lamb Nihari<br/>Pav Bhaji<br/>Panner Lababdar<br/>Dal Fry (Yellow Daal)<br/>Roomali Roti<br/>Onion Kulcha (So Yumm)

When we arrived, albeit around 5:30, this new eatery was empty. The staff we very attentive and made some excellent recommendations. We had the Kareem Pav starter, with the Bang Bang Butter Chicken and an eggplant dish. All were incredibly flavoursome and well presented. We tried two cocktails that were different but surprisingly tasty. I can highly recommend this eatery.

Amazing real indian food ! Highly recommend the lamb chops. The staff are lovely, and the cocktails are great. Awesome relaxed atmosphere. Will definitely come back again. Ohhh and the butter chicken is perfect

I'm usually hesitant to go out for Indian food because there are few places that actually take pride in their cooking. After seeing the menu for this place I had high hopes. As a previous reviewer mentioned, this place has a small menu, which is fantastic, because it means they make every curry separately, unlike your regular Indian joints that use the same base sauce for everything. <br/>Food-wise, I wasn't disappointment. We had the chili chicken and rava fish for starter and goat curry, lamb curry, tawa chicken for mains. So glad to finally find an Indian place that does a good fish dish! The fish was fresh and well spiced. Hands down the best chilli chicken I've ever had. All the curries were good as well. The tawa chicken has a slight sweetness to it, but that wasn't too big a deal. <br/>Sadly the service is a little lacking here. Probably because they are a new place and are still finding their way. It took a while for somebody to take our order and refill the water. They were nice about it though and did apologize, so that wasn't too bad.
FoodBin
Finally an Indian restaurant that has a menu that fits comfortably on 1 page and understand the importance of flavour over convenience of eating (referring to the use of bone-in meat in the goat curry)!<br/><br/>I liked that each curry had a different flavour as opposed to the usual Indian restaurant tactics of using the same base for all the currys on the menu.  It wasn't as hot (spicy) as we normally have it but then again it gave us a chance to truely appreciate the different flavours and spices that make up the curry.<br/><br/>The only small criticism I have is that the service needs to be a little bit more attentive. There was a delay in topping up water towards the end of the meal but overall I think it was pretty good. Oh and please try and use whole wheat flour for the Rumali roti as the white flour makes it very chewy :)<br/><br/>We were out of luck with the Lamb shank this time but what we did try has given us the motivation to come back with high expectations and try the Chef's special dish!
Teik
Pretty Average, trying to be too many things at the same time. Customer service was poor. Ambience is okay, table plan n layout could be better, its not cosy and inviting with too many empty spaces.

This is probably the best indian place I have been in Auckland. Superb ambience, smiling staff and good food is all you can expect in this one!

1947 the name and the interior designing says it all. It reflects the authenticity and uniqueness of the restaurant which I believe makes it the best Indian restaurant of Auckland. We booked a table for two over the phone 1 hour prior to dine in. And I think her name was Angela who made an effort to get us a table even though the restaurant was fully packed. We were welcome by a smiling staff member who took us to our table and was really friendly and informative about the menu and the wait we might had to experience for the food to come out. Saying that there was so much to look around and information to absorb about 1947 which explains the history of India that we didn't even realise when our appetisers and the mains came.<br/>I haven't had such delicious Indian food ever. The chefs are doing an amazing job and it reflects in the food. The curries were spot on and the naan breads were so soft and cooked to perfection that I never experienced that in any Indian restaurant. For a restaurant which is new you guys rock and I wouldn't be surprised to see you being counted in the top restaurants of Auckland. Saying that there will be people complaining about the cons and not seeing the positive but just keep doing what you do coz you guys seems like a group of people who want to and will improve to be the best. Will be back again and again and again to enjoy the food and will refer you wherever I go.

Absolutely! enjoyed dining out to this much awaited and newly opened eatery. The ambience/decor is aesthetically pleasing and the aura of lights blends well with the mood of the evening. <br/>From the menu to the preparation of dishes one can see the passion and efforts gone to ensure the authenticity and richness of Indian food flavours blended well with the creative presentation.<br/>We really liked the service, the gratitude, humbleness and hospitality make you feel really a vital part. <br/>No wonders you guys have become the talk of the town! :) <br/>Heartiest congratulations to the entire team for an out of the box concept! <br/><br/>Already looking forward to our next visit.

Really good interior and authentic tasty Indian food. Would definitely be back and recommend this place to my friends. Staff was friendly too. Not a typical Indian restaurant that you find in Auckland

The Only Run of the another pit mills - Worst Restaurant Experience ever. Sweet Food and Not Returning. Person seems to be in charge is extremely arrogant. We have ordered Butter Chicken, Goat Curry, Baingan Bhartha and some snacks. When asked for Goat Curry Being Sweet to the girl waitresses - Instead of accepting or understanding our problem - The reply was "Don't you know it suppose to be sweet???" I don't think that any of their front staff knows anything about the food. Overall Not Pleasant. Not up to our expectations. We will spread the word. Me and my Family extremely upset and devastated with the level of service and food. Please don't be arrogant about the experience we share it may help you to improve yourself and do better in future. I am sure your staff member will be able to recall the table we are talking. Also Just for your reference, we were 9 of us on the table with my Mother in law and her sister with one kids and other adults, we were allocated the table right in the center.

I will start with the good - food is delicious, I tried a few items the malai kofta was really nice and so was the keema pav. If I was to come back it would be for the food.<br/>I also really like what they have done to the place - I think the decor has bern done very nice with the theme following through in the 1947 newspaper menu - really cool. However, the service is so atrocious that I am not sure if I will come back.<br/>We booked a table and when we arrived we were told there is no booking - we then asked if we could have a table for 9 which they then started getting ready for us. The guy in the suit who is either the manager or owner then came over and said there is a table available for us.<br/>I must agree with the previous review - the waitresses are clueless. I feel bad saying it but there really is no initiative. Just as an example we all ordered curry but was not told it doesn't come with rice. The knowledge about the menu is very limited when you ask questions. <br/>I understand that the place is new, but that is something that can either make you or break you. I find it refreshing when I go to a restaurant where the wait staff are very much into the food, can make you suggestions and educate you about their menu i.e. the curry does not come with rice. <br/>The other down side is the food took very very long but what is worse in my opinion is that no one told us. I don't think people at our table would have felt as aggitated if we were at least aware of the wait time.<br/>I would probably give them another chance because I did really like the food. If it improves I will definitely change my rating - I will hope for the best.

Amazing new Indian restaurant - What a unique restaurant we stumbled upon while our stay at Rydges! This by far has to be one of the most amazing Indian food experiences we have had in our world travels. The menu, to the ambiance, it was very different to what we are used to in Indian restaurants. The setup does take you back in time and everything in design has been thought of well. Great cocktails and wine list for us. We ordered the chili chicken with thin roti as recommended by the friendly female staff member. For mains, we went on to try the goat curry and the lamb shank special and they were definitely work of art. Over all we loved our dinner and cannot wait to eat here once again when we are back in Auckland!

This is one of the most authentic Indian restaurant I have been into. A warm welcome greeted us when the door opened. We were seated less than a minute and was serviced well. We ordered a cocktail drink called Cold Blood and it was awesome and was prepared intricately! For mains we ordered Dahi Kebab, Tava Chicken, Paneer Tika Lababdaar. For sides we have garlic and cheese Naan and steam rice. The dessert Gajreli which consisted of carrot pudding and ice cream were heavenly. <br/>Special thanks to Sahil and Dimple for being our wonderful service persons. I will definitely come back here again.

HORRIBLE SERVICE. We went to this new Indian restaurant 1947 on Sunday. We booked our table for 7:30 however due to some personal reason we couldn’t make it on time, to which we called the restaurant and advised about the delay. The manager said they are ok with it however we might have to leave the restaurant within 1 hour to 1 hour 30 min. as we were going to normal dining, we thought the time is sufficient and if there was a situation like that we will leave.<br/><br/>We reached the restaurant 8:15 and upon arrival we were surprised to see that the restaurant was not fully booked, we still could see empty tables around. The waitress took us to our table and took our drinks order. We ordered some drinks and some entrĂ©e. After waiting for 20-25 min, we called the waitress to which she was clueless about the order. She went and checked and apologized for the slow service however within next 5-10 min we got some drinks on the table but still one of the drink which was ordered was still missing. We waited again for another 10-15 min and called the waitress again to which she apologized and was clueless about it. She checked and came back after 10 min with the drink. Finally we had our drinks but we were still waiting for our entrees. Again same old story, everyone was clueless, they went inside, checked with someone and came back apologized and after 10=15 min finally came up with the entrees.<br/><br/>By that time it was 09:15 pm and we thought with such super-fast service we should order the mains. We told the waitress about our mains order to which she said it will take 15 mins for the order. We waited for 15min and at 09:35 pm waitress came back to our table and said it will take another 15 min for the order. By this time we were already pissed off with the service but we didn’t say anything and said ok to her but as expected the food didn’t turn up.<br/><br/>It was 9:57 and we were super pissed off by then, we called the waitress and told her that if the food didn’t arrive in next 5 min we will leave the restaurant and guess what after 15 min too, nothing happened. Finally we decided to leave the table because we had enough of it. The manager at the cash counter said the food was late because we arrived late. He had this really weird mathematical skill which he used to advise us that food was later by 45 min because we arrived the restaurant 45 min late. <br/><br/>Anyways I’m so glad that I will not be coming here on my birthday which we were planning to come on 23rd this month. Would never recommend this horrible restaurant to anyone in Auckland. At last thanks for spoiling our mother’s day.

I recommend trying this place, you will love it and will want to come back again. The staff is very friendly & the food was outstanding. Went first time with group of friends, the service is great, prices are reasonable, menu is extensive and the food is filling. It is a very unique place as it consists of different ethnic eateries and curries.<br/>Don't have anything to complain about at all. Thanks !!!

Food divine and love the new look however disappointed the BYOW option gone. Just love a good cheap and cheerful option at times. Food is definitely with the visit<br/>

The food was absolutely wonderful, from preparation to presentation, very pleasing. I was expecting the food here to follow in the old Indian tradition but was pleased to find the menus trending in a contemporary direction with emphasis on vintage style..Would highly recommend it ......best Indian food in Nz
S&G Take Auckland
An Indian gem in the heart of Auckland CBD. I went for the soft opening of this eatery last week and have to say I was blown away. The chilli chicken is a must try! Hands down the best chilli chicken I have eaten in my life. The lollipop chicken is great and the lamb chops were so tender and delicious . The pav bhaji was super tasty and the pav was soft and fluffy how it should be. We also tried the gajar ka hawla with ice cream which was delicious. The warm halwa and cold ice cream with a slight cardamom flavor, was divine. Don't forget to order a side of masala fries 🍟 I will definitely be back again.... oh also if you like cocktails the Bombay Mule will blow yo mind 💹<br/> <br/><br/>Updated review as at 07/07/2017 - Third or Fourth visit here and i have to say this place is consistently AMAZING. Had a group function here and they catered to over 30 people easily. The food was prepared so quickly and the presentation and flavour was great. I tried the vegetarian manchurian which were delicious this time. I would highly recommend this place for any group events, as the atmosphere is lovely and the staff are just the best.

Food on point. Drinks on point. Service on point. Ambiance on point. Great place to visit for drinks or a meal with family and friends! <br/><br/>The food is a standout with succulent lamb chops and masala fries on the menu I was sold. <br/><br/>10/10 would visit again!
