Review Mexico Britomart - Auckland Central

Xanadu Ti Tree
The food at Mexico was excellent and tasty. They had many vegan options including tacos, sides, mains and dessert. The cocktails were also delicious. They use both vegetables and impossible meat in their vegan options. The restaurant itself was lively and cosy

My friends and I came here for dinner last night. Under six person weren't allowed to book a table. So we have to walk in. Luckily, we only waited 20 mins for a table. The light and ambience were great! We like here! I love mexico fried chicken the most as it's crispy and spicy. If you love spicy food, you can't miss it! The lamb taco was also special and pleasant with pomegranate. This is my first time to try Mexican food. So I don't know if it is authentic. But all dishes we ordered were great. It's a good place to drink with friends.

Great Mexican restaurant in Britomart, CBD, Auckland. The menu is tapas style, designed to share and multiple dishes. The food was tasty but lacked spiciness you would expect from Mexican food, although they had various degrees of chilli sauces you add yourself. Many different flavors of Margherita that seem to be well made. Service was efficient and friendly. Overall was good experience but I missed the Mexican flavours.

Easy to miss but well worth a visit. Looks small to start but plenty of seating available down the back. All your favourites you would expect as well as plenty of beers, margaritas and tequila to choose from. Service was with a smile and very sincere.

Tapas style restaurant. The staff explained how the menu worked and provided us with excellent service. We didn't have to wait long for the food to arrived. I'm pretty sure our first dish came out in a couple of minutes. Moderately priced and well worth the visit.

Great place, great ambience, great food. Awesome drinks but food portions were really small. It was packed due to a gig at vector but they accommodated us. Lovely staff and love the decor. We had sangrias, chimichanga, quesadillas and enchiladas. Lots of vegetarian options.

Amazing restaurant in Auckland city. Near the train station and the more popular areas. The food was incredible. I loved the staff and the atmosphere was grand. I felt like I was in Mexico. Great place to have drinks with friends.

Is there such a thing as "fusion Mexican" tapas? I guess there is now! The funky range of ever changing flavours at Mexico (they change their menu seasonally, every 3 months or so) would never appear in a traditional Mexican restaurant, but it's the mainstay here. GREAT decor, btw. Tacos are good value and interesting, but sometimes a bit of a lucky dip on whether the flavours work and whether they've overcooked the chicharron that day. Mains are fantastic: interesting, fresh and delicious. Culley's hot sauces at the table are cool, though frustratingly un-named! Drinks will quickly add up, and service is quick and friendly... but they'll try and turn your table over quickly. This place is built on fast covers and turnaround, so don't aim to come for a relaxing long meal!

Food was good for the price. If you sit outside, flies could be a problem. Bigger than their other store in Auckland but old furniture and building. Customer service was not as good as the their other store.

Taco chip was amazing also sources they provide really nice. All the food we ordered pretty nice.

Rad place for a night out. Did the margarita class with our work social club. Heaps of fun, yummy drinks and a good feed put on. Def recommend

We happened to go in because it was raining and we didn't want to walk to some place further. We were pleasantly surprised by the warm atmosphere and great service we received. The food was really good, we enjoyed the tacos and the Mexican beer available. I can see myself going back for more.

Food was great! Highly recommend the Guacamole and one of their Margaritas, which come in many different flavours. Staff were very friendly, and very knowledgeable about ingredients. I was also able to pick food that catered to my dietary restrictions. Very good.

Food was delicious. Pork belly taco was the favourite. Kids meal were good portion. Love the vibe and food selection. Only thing is pork belly crackling a bit too salty. Otherwise everything else was delicious

Must've been a rough night in the kitchen as all our food came out bland. Have had positive experiences with Mexico's other branches so this is quite a letdown.

𝑴𝒆𝒙𝒊𝒄𝒐 𝑭𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒅 𝑪𝒉𝒊𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒏🐔: Was skeptical about this one, because of my love for Korean fried chicken🍗 I have lost interest in any other. However this one was surprisingly amazing👍. Chicken was soft and tender but crispy on the outside. Jalapeno🌶️ mayo and Chipotle mayo are both delicious with the chicken.⠀<br/>⠀<br/>𝑭𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝑺𝒑𝒊𝒄𝒆𝒅 𝑫𝒖𝒄𝒌 𝑳𝒆𝒈 𝑻𝒂𝒄𝒐🌮: Was very excited about this one but the duck 🦆was not super tender like I thought. As much as I wanted soft duck,🍗 this one was still pretty damn delicious. It's more of a pulled duck taco.😅⠀<br/>⠀<br/>𝑨𝒈𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝑩𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝑷𝒐𝒓𝒌 𝑹𝒊𝒃𝒔🍖: Highlight of the night! Beautiful meat just fall off the bone as soon as you touch it. I am literally swallowing my saliva🤤 while editing this post. Amazing flavors😝 and I would highly recommend this dish.⠀<br/>⠀<br/>Their margaritas🍸 are always always a good time. Never disappoint! You can download their app 📱for occasional vouchers.⠀

Once I try every single one of their margheritas I can die happy. Love their drinks menu and happy hour a little too much. Food is also great, their lunch specials are very well priced and vegan friendly!

Very friendly staff, helpful in the selection of meals. We shared a few dishes and they were all great (we weren’t keen on the croquetas- not much flavour). Great deals on margaritas!
Gurvez
Very disappointed, the mexican fried chicken was undercooked. We had wings aswell which were bland. We also had to call out to the staff multiple times before they came to assist us as they were busy talking amongst each other. Both the cauliflower taco and avo taco vege options were good though

Went there on the international Magarita day! Love the Magarita! Food here was pretty average, corn chips was ok and fried chicken wasn’t up to my expectation. The lamb was not too bad though. A good place for small drinks after work

I love Mexican food and Mexico is my place to go to! The lighting and ambience is very well designed and the food is amazing. My favourite is the quesadilla! Their drinks are also very good, especially the Sangria. Would recommend!

I have been here 3 times during the week for lunch in the past 5 months and loved their soft shell tacos (beef, chicken, pork was superb). I would happily give the food a 4.5/5 even though price is on the higher end.<br/><br/>Went again this weekend with my family but I was disappointed. They have changed the menu, we ordered lamb, beef, duck, avocado soft shell tacos. Only the lamb was good, beef was covered in watery sauces, duck was fine (I didn't like the taste of the herb/spice), avocado was just mostly shredded cabbage. Food this time would be a 2/5
LilianMonaghan
Had slow cooked lamb and chicken quesadilla, which were alright and not very flavourful without the sauce. And the guacamole was meh the corn chips were stale with the old oil smell. Had high expectations about the food but got a bit disappointed.

Yea I think this is an easy place to go to for lunch with a friend or a group of people. They do have good food but it keeps being called a cheap eats place and I would say it was. My cheap eats would being able to get something decent for 10. I ordered the taco Tuesday deal for 10 and because it was a deal I thought I was going to get a lot. I had to stop off at better burger after to full myself up. It's a good place, but not something I would have about. I'll come here for the ease but not really for much else

Great atmosphere, tasty meals, quick and friendly service. The xocolate pastel dessert was huge so ask for 2 spoons! Thanks for a great night!

Down in Auckland's Britomart is Mexico standing out in its wonderfully colorful decor. Offering a relatively inexpensive dining experience and great food this is a really good option for a quick bite and a good way to catch up with friends. I have been here a couple of times and am yet to be disappointed!<br/><br/>The atmosphere feels typically Mexican with a lot of color and photos all over the walls. It presents a rustic feel providing it with a greater sense of authenticity. The walls are covered in pictures of all things Latin American and there is lots of shabby wood providing it will the perfect funky and hip atmosphere. The vibe here is very busy, this place can get packed especially when there is a concert so make sure you aren't too late. The space is conversational but the only critique would be that it is quite dark so it's best to get by the window if possible.<br/><br/>The service here is excellent and efficient. Tje food comes out a good pace and ordering doesn't take long either. The staff are very friendly and look after your dining experience well.<br/><br/>The food here is great, there is a good range of options and there are corn tortillas for the gluten free people (just ask). The tacos are modern and full of flavour! I have had quite a few of the different taco options and have not been disappointed with a particular favourite being the fish taco. The food is also relatively inexpensive especially for the area. The food is fresh and wonderfully simple as well as providing a relaxed dining experience. The sodas here are also fantastic and would recommend to anyone.<br/><br/>Overall this place offers modern vibes with a somewhat authentic Mexican feel. Its cozy and funky. The food is excellent and the staff friendly and the service efficient. It's a tad dark in the space, but that isn't enough to change my opinion. The food is also cheap and delicious, and its possibly one of the best Mexican places in Auckland.

Devine! Excellent food, great for ordering small, tapas size foods and sharing with friends to try a bit of everything Mexico. The Margaritas are absolutely delicious and well worth trying a couple. Fairly priced at around $30 per person including the drinks so will definitely be back!

food 5/5<br/>ambiance 5/5<br/>drinks 5/5<br/><br/>I’ve been here a couple of times now and I have never been disappointed. The food is always good! The fried chicken is always freshly fried, delicious tacos, and the drinks! The margaritas are bomb. They have tons of different flavors. I’ve tried the original, pomegranate & hibiscus, lychee & baby ginger, black plum & cinnamon. The black plum is my fave!<br/><br/>This ia definitely my go-to whenever I feel like having a good margarita.
Shanley Jayne
Amazing margaritas- so many choices. Great vibe, always bustling and busy. Awesome staff. The cauliflower bites are to die for. Probably the fastest food I’ve ever received from the order time
Karina
Mexico never disappoints however the one in Britomart is a little dark for my liking but the food is still delish. My favourites are the guacamole, chicken quesadilla and the white cola Mexican soda and the raspberry and cucumber mexican soda. Def recommend popping in here for some good Mexican :))
Anastasia Matiatos
Mexico is damn amazing like woah hit the woah! For a drink I got the Ruby Grapefruit Soda and my friend got the Raspberry And Cucumber Soda, they both costed $5 which is super cheap and they were damn good oi oi oi amazing. We got Guacamole which costs $14 and then also got a Chicken Quesadilla which costs $18. The quesadilla is so dope, best one this mouth has ever eaten!! the staff were so cute and joked around with us so we just had an all round 10/10 experience, can't wait to be back! x

Never disappoints. I really like their quesadilla - full of flavour and cheesy. Would strongly recommend their grapefruit soda because I always end up having two drinks :)

been here several times. I don't think they need another review in all honesty but I love their tacos and fried chicken!<br/><br/>delicious margaritas too.
Siobhan
Quirky atmosphere, friendly staff, and good food. The Friday margarita deal is good value and the hibiscus flavour did not disappoint. Nice option for a fun dinner.

This place has the best fried chicken (I’m sure everyone already knows that). Their lunch deals give you more bang for your buck so highly recommend! Fast service and nice deco
Totally Fried NZ
We got totally fried at Mexico<br/><br/>To everyone still eating pulled pork tacos, you need to get out of 2018 - we eat fried chicken tacos this year. <br/><br/>It’s no secret Mexico do amazing fried chicken, the only menu item worthy of the exclamation “not to be missed!”. But they also serve it in a taco which means you can shovel more of the fried stuff along with fresh slaw and coriander in your trap all at once. Happy days. <br/><br/>The sauces with the fried chicken are spectacular but if you’re not satisfied with those, you’ll find five bottles of chilli sauce on your table at the ready. We added a little for good measure. <br/><br/>Taco Tuesday means a fried chicken taco and soda for $10 or a taco and margarita for $12. Props to the lemonade, shit was the right amount of sour and refreshing. Mexico, you are a genius. <br/><br/>Overall: 4.9/5<br/><br/>What we had:<br/>2 x Fried Chicken Taco with Lemonade<br/>Mexico Fried Chicken <br/>$36<br/>

UPDATED as had not posted. Went out for my friends birthday on the 25 November. I am giving this place a 2 only because I enjoyed what I ate. I’m sorry but service was very poor even when it wasn’t busy. We waited 20minutes for our first drinks and almost a hour for food. Then we got another round of drinks and waited another 20min only because we reminded the waitress we ordered drinks. We were still waiting on the sangria jug and had to ask to cancel it. They said it was there but forgot to take it out. Then to find out it wasn’t the one we ordered. We just asked to not worry about making the right one, paid and left. Sorry will not come back again if drinks take that long to make and for staff to admit they forgot.

Perfect place for lunch, dinner with family or even a date night. The place is a all rounder. Went for lunch with wife and kido on a Sunday. Didnt know Kids eat free on Sundays and that too a 3 course lunch "Free" wow. Friendly staff. Lovely fresh food as always. Cant get any better. Surely come back again.

This is like the tried and tested option you can always count on. Love this place. Delicious food, drinks and decor. I’ve been to the Hamilton and one of the other branches as well. No real complaints.

Had a catch up with old friends and Mexico was the only spot open in town! Had wonderful experiences at Mexico but haven’t seemed to review the joint. This is my first visit in about a year so the menu had changed up the food was such a delight as always. <br/><br/>The Britomart spot has heaps of seating and seating outdoors. We were greeted by a lovely staff member that ran us through the menu and the specials. We decide to go for a Taco each and share the fried chicken and quesadilla. <br/><br/>I ordered the beef carne asada taco and it was so juicy! Probably one of my favourite tacos I’ve had there (I really enjoyed the fish taco they had so I hope they bring it back again!). The tiger prawn quesadilla was super cheesy and had a good amount of prawn pieces which was awesome! The fried chicken is standard, the seasoning makes it so unique and it’ll please anyone. And lastly the virgin sangria, was fruity and refreshing. Would definitely reorder all the items again!

We ordered the Prawn Quesadilla and Fried chicken, and a small carafe of Mango & Passionfruit margarita from their wide range of margarita menu (only $20 for a carafe!). I really enjoyed the fried chicken - a bit on the small side but to be fair it is boneless, crispy and spicy and comes with yummy sauce.<br/>Service was great from start to finish, with different workers coming over to check on us despite the place being packed with pre-concert diners.<br/>We sat inside which is dimly lit and gets a bit noisy – perfect. Great place for a catch up over some nibbles and margaritas.<br/><br/>

A bit disappointing overall. We went here for a team lunch and had a wide selection of food, but most of it was pretty average. The fried chicken was spicy hot but lacked flavour. The prawn taco just lacked flavour. Some of the salsa and sauces accompanying the dishes were nice, but in general I found the food quite bland.

Great food, cosy and dimly lit area, fast service and attentive staff. Totally happy and enjoyed their Esquites, Spiced Pork and Virgin Sangria as they were all delicious and good portions too. Excellent place for a team work-do. Will definitely come back.

Awesome place in britomart , we just had dinner here , super packed lucky we got seated pretty quickly, food was tasty and delicious we will definitely be back thanks..

Came here cause I had $30 credit to spend on my Mexico app. If you don’t have it you definitely should! The corn chips come for free on every visit and some other perks too. <br/>All the food was good but nothing really blew me away. The fried chicken everyone raves about was regular fried chicken and the fish taco I had, the filling was good but the tortilla was dry. Ribs were fall off the bone but wasn’t as tender as I would have liked. Good place to have some nibble and drinks in my opinion but not somewhere I’d be rushing back to.
Nathalie
We throughly enjoyed our dinner here on Sunday. The waitstaff were prompt and the place wasn’t too busy. I had their special chicken burger and it was delicious and decent size for $16 I highly recommend! Their chicken and mushroom quesadillas were also very yummy and generous portions. Their fried chicken were alright (the serving size seemed to be going smaller.) and the chimichangas were yum but small portions too. For group of 4 adults we paid $100 total. Overall we enjoyed our food and the service and will be back!

Love the service and the food. Margaritas were fantastic. The only thing is they close early but I guess is average trading hours in Auckland.

The Best Mexican food so far I have had in Auckland!<br/>Their Mexican Fried chicken is the BEST!!!!!<br/>What best is about this place is that they have a variety of Mexican sauces as well you can choose . <br/>The Decor and Ambience is so beautiful and gives you a feel as if you are in Mexico.<br/>Service is fast and staff are friendly too.<br/>Food is always yummy and fresh.<br/>Flavour is good and the over all experience is great here always!<br/>Their Quesadillas and Tacos are also very yum!<br/>I am not an alcohol fan so I like the fact they have their own fresh Soda drinks. <br/>For starters I really like their Esquites which is corns and tortillas in a nice light spicy tangy flavour.<br/>I would definitely recommend this place!
Donna
Their esquites, chicken quesadilla and virgin sangria are always my go-to order at Mexico. They taste so delicious and the serving for the quesadilla is well worth $16. The only thing is once there was a little too much cactus in it which is overpowering, but the rest of the times I've visited it has been fine. The restaurant is dimly lit and has quite a nice atmosphere, albeit a little cramped. One of my favourite restaurants.

Grabbed a quite bite to eat before the Cher concert on Friday night.  Yummy cocktails and an array of delicious small plates - great chicken croquetas to die for!!!!    Only one slight blip in the evening was that the staff were a little confused - we were given a number, however they seemed to wander aimlessly around asking if the food they were carrying was ours - surely the number given would be of the order docket???  Hmmm perhaps they had new staff????
Yash Gupta
A small dim place with Mexican inspired prints on the wall and bench style seating. Came famished for dinner and after some surprises in the menu, we ordered the black bean dip (made vegetarian), cauliflower florets and the pork quesadilla. Unimpressed by the food in general except for the cauliflowers. The margarita selection is nice with some unconventional flavours. Might be a decent place for snacks and drinks, but definitely not for a proper meal (enough so that we ended up having a proper dinner after getting out of this place).

Loyal México customer for last five years and have not once been disappointed. Great price point for both food and drinks and good selection to chose from. Staff are awesome and always talk you through the daily specials. Must try the infamous fried chicken if is your first time there.

Favourite Mexican place!<br/>Their chicken quesadilla is always my go-to-dish, tacos are great and all the snack foods are worth a try - especially their esquites.

Went here with my team for lunch to farewell one of my colleagues - table for 12. I ordered:<br/>Pineapple Vanilla soda $5<br/>Tostaditas $10<br/>Pork belly taco $7<br/>Chicken quesadilla $16<br/><br/>I really enjoyed all the dishes! The soda was delicious; i found the tostaditas refreshing; pork taco was nice and spicy; loved the sauce that came with the quesadillas.<br/><br/>I also got to try some other dishes that my colleagues ordered. The salsa roja and guacamole + chips were pretty good; fried chicken was off the hook juicy; big thumbs up to the pork quesadillas and lamb burrito; and last but not least - the creme catalan tasted similar to creme brulee!<br/><br/>I got the Tostaditas for free by showing their card when i paid (just ask their staff for one), so only paid $28 which was awesome! Although the serving sizes aren't huge, i found i was still full afterwards.

Quesadillas are great especially with the wide range of hot sauce to choose from. Great customer service.<br/>The place was a bit dark and at lunch time when its busy, its very noisy. Kinda gave me a head ache.
Jay
This place is great. Again not the Mexican back home, but a good compromise. The one thing I will say is take their menu at face value. I ordered the chicken pieces and got a small bucket with just that 😂.

Came here on a Tuesday for dinner with my friend. First impression, Mexico was crowded and hot.<br/><br/>Ambience: very busy. We sat in a corner of a big table. The restaurant was decorated with Latin art, symbols, flags and the red/yellow lights. The light was quite dim though. Perfect for date nights or big group gathering.<br/><br/>Service: fast and friendly. We were greeted at the door and seated right away. Throughout the whole course, staff were nice and attentive. Food came out pretty quick as well which I really appreciated since we were starving.<br/><br/>Food: We ordered fish tacos, lamb tacos, guacamole and fried chickens. I love the lamb tacos and the fried chickens. The sauce in the tacos made it very tasty, even though I’m not the usual fan of lamb. The fish tacos had fresh chilli in it which I was not paying attention and took a bite. Had to chuck a lot of water since i’m not used to spicy food. The fried chicken and guacamole were tasty but nothing special about them. <br/><br/>Overall, this place and cuisine is probably not for me.
Rohit
Group of friends went here for dinner. Ordered fried chicken, chicken wings, mushroom taco, lamb taco and chicken quesadilla. Food was good overall however, the quesadilla was a bit dry. Service is fast and good, staff are friendly. White Cola is yummy!

Mexico is one of my favourite eateries in Auckland, for its vibrant and fresh Mexican cuisine, extensive tequila list and super funky and delicious Frida’s margaritas. . Their menu boasts a wide range of dishes, and there is definitely something for everyone’s tastes. I also love the fact that their menu is so versatile – you can come here for margaritas and some snacks, or have a three course meal, or just order a three lots of their famous fried chicken and you will be set for the night!

Went for dinner last night pre show with 7 others. We were able to book a table due to size of group which was a bonus. Was always going to be hit and miss with our crowd of country bumpkin steak eaters but pleased to say they thought the food was great!! Service was fast and efficient, waitress was awesome and food was excellent.
G 💖
Was so good! I loved the Eggplant taco despite how much it made my nose water bc of how spicy it was. I also really liked the chickpea patatas and the churros were nicely done...Not at all greasy and had a nice texture and the chocolate sauce was perfect as it wasn't so sweet like most chocolate sauces they make for churros! Everything was perfect but it was quite pricey and very small serving for like expensive prices
Imperius Malekith
Good for lunch, as then its not busy. Atmosphere was cheerful and the staff are friendly. Good variety of food too. Only bad thing was you couldn't choose whether the food items were mild, medium or spicy, and most items by default were quite spicy.
Medium_Rare
Hmmm Mexico always delights with its fried chicken and fresh tasteful tacos. I actually really liked the layout of Mexico on Britomart, it’s intimate but has an exciting ambience.<br/><br/>Came here to grab a bite before our friend heads on over to Dubai. As expected of Mexico establishments consistent quality food, I don’t have much to complain about.<br/><br/>Showstopper: Fried Chicken<br/><br/>Overall Grade: B+

Went early when they were opening for the day..Most staff were getting ready for the day and cleaning.Staff were very friendly and accommodating as we were 10 minutes earlier of the opening time of 12pm.<br/>Drinks, the sodas were very nice . Fried chicken didnt taste as other places with less batter.Tacos were tasty and nachos were as per usual.
Manoj Patel
Been here a few times and never seem to disappoint. Service is quick, staff are great. Nice venue. The fried chicken is nice, the wings are just as good. The tacos, don't be fooled by the size of them, they are great.

Came here at 5:30pm on a Friday afternoon after work! <br/><br/>For snacks we got Esquites. For tacos we got Chimmichurri Fish, Xocolate Mole Beef and Spiced Duck Leg. For others we got Ceviche and Spiced Pork Belly. For Salads we got the Red Rice. For Desserts we got Cheesecake. This was all between 2! And we finished everything! <br/><br/>Favourite would have to be Xocolate Beef tacos and pork belly! The beef was tender, almost couldn’t tell it was beef! Probably the bigger portion of toppings too in comparison. The duck taco was disappointing, texture of the duck kind of got lost from the taco itself. The fish taco was good! A little zing but toppings were small.<br/>The pork belly was amazing! The skin was crunchy and crispy but crumbled away; absolutely a play on taste buds and textures. Sat on a bed of kumara/pumpkin/chickpea purée which was divine and complemented by a small salad of apple and onions (?). <br/><br/>The esquites was interesting; corn was good but the sauce might be a hit and miss for some—for me it was a hit! I’m really adventurous with trying new things; this sauce reminds you of blue cheese kind of, albeit not as strong and pungent. <br/><br/>The Ceviche was good! Coconut shavings were a bit dry though; but crunchy taco at the bottom worked really well with the freshness of the fish. Needed some sort of sauce just to pull it together. <br/><br/>Red rice was amazing; that cheesy sauce!!! The crushed almonds were a delight to chew on. Beans were crisp and fresh, couldn’t fault it. <br/><br/>Lastly, the cheesecake. A little disappointing; there was supposed to be caramel brittle on there but there wasn’t. The slide was also extremely small for the price. <br/><br/>It’s cool how they have 5 different sauces on every table! My friend and I were experimenting by pumping some on all of our dishes! Makes the dining experience fun! Service was ok, felt a little rushed and they made a mistake with our order too. <br/><br/>Food: 8/10<br/>Price: 9/10<br/>Ambience: 9/10<br/>Service: 7/10 <br/>

Wonderful restaurant in the Britomart area. Enter this venue and feel transported to Mexico. Well at the least the food and drinks take you there! I was warmly greeted and staff here are so pleasant and lovely. <br/><br/>It was close to closing time and hard to get my order in quick smart for my late dinner. I went with some Esquites which was flavoursome corn served with cheese and onion crema as well as some tortillas. It had so much flavour and great start. I also got the Chicken Tiinga Quesadilla. It was plenty enough for me as all the dishes are meant to be shared. It had a great combo of chicken with cactus, beans, and spinach all sandwiches between two tortillas with oozy cheese. The onion crema also makes an appearance in this dish and lends a nice flavour to it. Washed it down with Blackberry & Elderflower Mexico Soda. Very refreshing! <br/><br/>Definitely give this place a try as totally worth it for both the food and service.

I think I ate the best pork ribs in my meatlover's history. Tender, juicy and marinated in amazing sauce. Plus Pacifico beer and that was the best meal I recently had.

The food and drinks are really good. Im a huge nacho fan an was really impressed with the taste. I would recommend this to anyone and everyone who ever wants a small taste of mexico in the world. Ambience was simple and quiet.

Amazing hot sauce with awesome food. The service was excellent and the servers were very helpful as we required only vegetarian food, it was greatly explained to us on what will be good. A must visit place with nice ambience as well.
Chai Paani
Team lunch-have been here a couple of times before but remembered to take pics this time. Ambience and decor is great, staff are cool, service is prompt, portions are reasonable but food is average. There was no standout dish from everything we had ordered. Worth a visit.

Came here for entrees as part of Savour + Switch, a progressive dinner by Britomart. Loved the lamb soft taco the best and also their margarita was bomb. We would love to come back soon!

A refreshing step up from the many Mexican chain restaurants in Auckland. I really enjoy the balance of flavours across dishes eg. The watermelon salad is lovely and light with lots of flavour and goes great with the more typical earthy mexican flavours. Its also reasonably affordable for a place that also has great vibes and well presented food.
Ati
I absolutely adore the atmosphere that Mexico provides it's customers with. The staff here are very attentive and amazing! I took my friend here for her birthday and our server was absolutely wonderful! I absolutely love all of their food and drinks (especially their quesadillas). I will most definitely be returning many more times in the near future!

Fast and efficient service with a smile, delicious food and drinks and super clean. Buzzing on a Saturday nights and kids friendly. Love their quick meals 😊

The service was okay, though they were really busy. The food isn't really my cup of tea. The artwork was awesome and creative. The restaurant is reasonably clean and tidy.

The environment in this Mexican bar is very lively and enjoyable. However there were let downs - $16 for 6 pieces of small sized chicken as it isn't that worth it even though it tasted okay along with the sauce. The waitress who served us seemed like she either hates her job or she's just very tired of customers, but at least put a fake character on. Also, cutting the menu down as the kitchen closes at 8.30pm isn't that helpful for the business because you'll lose a lot of customers. As for the food, I'm glad it was served fast, fresh, and hot. However, the price isn't worth the portions. $50 for two is ideal.<br/><br/>Taste - 6/10<br/>Ambience - 7.5/10<br/>Size - 5/10<br/>Service - 4/10<br/>Price - 3.5/10

Love the food, service and ambience. I've so far tried the beef quesadilla, fried chicken, papas bravas, corn chips and salsa, chorizo taco, red wine sangria and white cola. Can't fault a thing. My vegan partner raves about the mushroom taco, but says the rest of their vegan options are a bit average (hence why I knocked off a couple points). Looking forward to visiting again!

The food is always really good. It does however feel a little expensive for the portions being delivered, but always really good. They're good with letting you know about allergens, just a little unfortunate that there's quite a limited choice for people who are dairy free. The tacos do not disappoint however. The drinks, especially the cocktails are absolutely beautiful and the ambience is always amazing and buzzing.

Had dinner here recently and the food, ambience and service were all good. We had a carafe of flavoured margarita, guac and nachos and some tacos. They do need to work on the way they make the guac - we expected it to be smoother and not having too large pieces of avo in it. We'll be back to try more items from the menu soon.

Love the atmosphere in here. We were lucky enough to be seated quite quickly if not sometimes you have to wait!! But they do have a bar area so could always grab some delicious margaritas (lychee and a pineapple one was what we had) <br/><br/>We ordered the famous Mexico fried chicken. It's only comes with 5 pieces so sometimes I feel like we need two portions to satisfy my fried chicken cravings. <br/><br/>Also I recommend the Al Arabe which is a lamb dish... The flavours were so good and so smokey! The chorizo and cauliflower quesadilla is also one to go for. Worth the money as it has 8 quarters and fills you up nicely! <br/>Guac and chips always a nice side starter. <br/><br/>Overall, we were sooooo full (3ppl) thank goodness the staff stopped me from ordering one more taco!

This place and Takapuna franchise are probably the best for Mexican. Their guacamole is to die for and always good quality. The fried chicken and margaritas are also the highlight (I love the pomegranate margarita) <br/>Definitely recommend, especially before a night out. Great place to pre drink!
S&G Take Auckland
Fantastic atmostphere and even better staff. The manager on shift yesterday i think his name was Oliver was super friendly and really is the epitome of what good customer service should be so thank you !<br/><br/>If you like a nice atmosphere for a quick eat with friends, Mexico is a great place for that. The Britomart location is a tad cosy.<br/><br/>The mexico fried chicken is a family favorite. It's pretty much like a high quality chicken nugget with a bit of spice.<br/><br/>My favorite are the beef taco's and also the fish ones. Both have a lot of flavor and are definitely a lot fancier than the ones you get at Mexicali Fresh (i still love you MF), with fresher flavors. Though smaller in size.<br/><br/>I thought the esquites were polenta chips (i swear they used to serve these at some stage), turned out to be kernels with a few spices.  (Update soooo the Polenta ish chips are on the menu under patatas something and they are great!)
Choco
Good place to relax and catch up with friends. The sangria is my favorite , I would recommend better chairs though, the ones that are placed outside look terrible. Great staff
Good Food, Good Mood
I ate at 'Mexico Britomart' 3 of the 18 days I was in Auckland because I had heard of how good it was. The only thing that's stopped me from giving a solid 5/5 is the service at the Britomart store. 2/3 times had appalling service. I made the effort to call and make a reservation for 8 guests on the night, was told to email through the booking? I also found it rather interesting that everyone at the table was asked for ID even though everyone looked over 25. And for non-NZ guests - REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR PASSPORT, or you can't drink. Ruined the ambience from the moment we sat down. I guess it's a compliment that they thought we all look underage? <br/><br/>Stand out dishes were ALL of the starters (especially the pumpkin dip), FRIED CHICKEN, pork belly taco, and the white apple sangrias. If you sign up for the club then you get a complimentary entree. Obviously I liked the food if I paid money for dinner 3 times but the poor service sure left a sour taste in my mouth.
DuckieLovesToEat
I have been here a few times now in the past but this is my first time coming for the masterclass. We came here for my bestfriend's hens and Oliver was such a good bartender. It was a lovely night indeed.
G
Great vibes. Food and drinks are of reasonable price. The three cheese quesadilla and sangria were very good. Would visit again to try other things on the menu

This place is the place to be after a hard day's work. I ordered some fried chicken, quesadillas and a lychee margarita. The fried chicken was a 10/10 with the sauces, the quesadillas were fairly good, but can try to make the dip a little more sour than bitter. The margarita was refreshing. You'll should surely give it a try.
Ffionachua
I love the fried chicken in Mexico. The spices and herbs used are always on point, and it comes with an amazing sauce. <br/><br/>One of our other favourites is the quesadilla. Great flavours and decent portion sizes. <br/><br/>The only downside is that almost everything served there is spicy (even including items that are rated 1 chilli; everything is given a rating of 1, 2 or 3 chillies. The only non-spicy dishes, will be the quesadillas and desserts, so be prepared!
Foodandwinefan
Mexico is an ok option for sharing with a group or just generally overstuffing on mexican goods. Guacamole is good for a starter, some weird soggy potato cake thing under the squid starter tho. Fish taco was sub par, mushroom dish was also lacking the usual mexican flavor punches. Overall an ok experience.
Raymond Tiong
This restaurant focusses on small sharing dishes. It can be a little pricey, but at least the flavour combinations are interesting and you get some variety. <br/><br/>Scallops and bacon specialty was nice. The prawn quesadilla daily special was not – I couldn't taste anything special, and there was very little prawn. <br/><br/>I'd like to try the fish taco next time.
Paula Guitierrez
The atmosphere is really cool, as a Mexican I feel they did a great job with the Mexican decoration. I tried the guacamole and it was great! Very fresh and natural ingredients. Unfortunately the tacos where a little bit disappointing, I didn't feel they where traditional tacos. The pork tacos for example where made with pork belly and we usually use pulled pork in Mexico. I tried all the tacos and the flavours where good but not what we use in Mexico. The service was very good so I'll try to go again and try other things in the menu.
Mana
Our meals were smaller than expected but they came out with plenty of different selections. Alcohol was great! Sangria for the win again, quesadillas were delicious as well as the tacos. Nice decor with the day of the dead theme, excellent service.
Christine Lee
Went with a couple of people and ordered the tacos. Not very impressed. All the fillings were burnt which covered all the flavours. Friendly waiters though.
Whiskyncigars
Seriously, I do not understand how a place like this can survive, probably just sheer traffic and branding. The food is substandard and very bland. The tacos I could not fault, easy tacos and good flavour but the Tamale, Special day of the dead chicken, Quesadillas - All are bland, flavourless. <br/>Attention chef! - ADD SPICE, JUST A PINCH HERE AND THERE. ADD SPICE!!!<br/><br/>Worked out to be $30 per person and to be honest, I could have gone for a 5 min walk and gotten better value and flavoursome food. <br/>This is my second time there, we wanted to give it another chance. But no more chances. Never again.
Paige Venter
Mexico was great. We came for dinner and a drink on a Friday night with some friends. We ordered the fried chicken and some quesadillas, both tasted great. The wait for the food and drink was very reasonable, especially considering how busy they seemed to be. The wait staff were knowledgeable of the food and friendly. Try the Passionfruit and Vanilla margarita! Very drinkable!
Neil Fibbens
It was a few weeks since I went but the experience was great so thought I would put something up about it. We basically drank lots of sangria as the waiter treated us with some great service and helped us sample our way through a number of starters. I now have the loyalty card and will return to one of the 3 or 4 restaurants in Auckland soon.
Z M
food in general is pretty good here. just dont get the dessert! i asked for the churros with salted caramel. when the dish arrived at our table it basically had some salted sugar sprinkled on top. we sent it back and the chef and the waitstaff insisted thats how it should be. and the worst thing was that the waitstaff had the cheek to say "yeah its not good caramel but you know they have those days". <br/><br/>just avoid the Britomartone. Shocking staff!
Auckland Eats
To be honest, when we decided to go to Mexico I was a little sceptical. Over the past couple of nights dining out in Auckland, we have had the misfortune of running from one disappointment to another.  Honestly, I thought Mexico would be the same. Oh how mistaken I was. Mexico is great. Mexico is pretty damned great. From the decor of the small and cozy eatery, to the fast and attentive service, Mexico had me drawn from the get go. The food is astonishing. We ate the salsa and cornchips, porkbelly taco, beef taco, chicken taco, fried chicken, and drank two margaritas that set the standard for what margaritas should be. Who ever designed the menu needs an award.  The flavour combinations of all our dishes were out of this world. Truly a great experience and an amazing place to eat. If you are looking for an authentic, Mexican restaurant with good vibes, great service, and amazing food, then we highly recommend this establishment.
Cool Cat
Always tasty and sure to please. Food is always hot and fast to be served. Fried chicken seems to be continually going up in price with smaller serving sizes to go with it :(. If only it weren't so irresistible! Would recommend any of their seafood tacos and pair them with a good jug of sangria!
Monique Keys
Amazing service, the wait staff were fun, full of life and really seemed to enjoy there job. The food was amazing we shared a few dishes between the two of us and thoroughly enjoyed everything. As we were paying we were also pleasantly surprised as the staff gave us a free snack! Definitely recommend.
Evaline Shandil
A friend of mine went here on rainy cold winter day after being all drenched we had a massive appetite. So we ordered soft taco shells, I had Pipan chicken taco & it was DELICIOUS, I could've eaten 3 or 4 more although keeping in mind the portion sizes are relatively small-disappointing but the taste was definitely there. <br/><br/>Will be going there back
Cristina
Although they are changing their menu every 3 months, I think, they are consistently yummy. Not all the dishes are my favorite but still the best mexican food in town. As a bonus, the prices are quite decent :).
Daisy Hsu
The tacos were really nice, I especially liked the pork one! I got two tacos, and although the they look small, they wee surprisingly filling. The corn chips and guacamole were good, and we got them for free after joining their loyalty programme/club. I thought that the membership thing is fantastic-- no cost to join, but a free snack every time you eat there! It definitely will encourage me to go there more often.

Mexico used to be "the place to go to" it's still good pretty sure portions have shrunken, but all in all not a bad feed.<br/><br/>Place is always busy, great venue, food comes out quickly and the staff are really efficient.
Shanzay
Went to Mexico with for a Christmas lunch with work people. Got the gorditos- was disappointed with how dry they were and how tiny. My colleagues didn't enjoy their meals either and the portions were by small as well. I've been to Mexico several times but was disappointed. Will try somewhere else me Christmas lunch! The sangria was good and tasty.
David Purvis
Went here with a friend Peter Phelan on Saturday 3 January 2015, was a very nice lunch and great service, their sauces are awesome and you can buy them to take away.  Very authentic.  Service was excellent and we had a lovely table outside.
Michelle Hwang
Visited the Ponsonby branch once before. The first time to visit Britomart branch for dinner alone. Ordered two small dishes for $15.00 in total. Spicy but I love them all. Satisfied with price and interior style. But no staff deliveries me anything for drinking, even a cup of tap water.
Andy Edmunds
had the pleasure of being upstairs for a Margarita masterclass. Great experience making our own drinks to then be consumed! Lots of variations of flavours. Then the food started coming out. This was even better. the fried chicken was amazing. I will be back to sample more of the amazing food.
Josh Law
Came here for a work lunch...we tried pretty much everything on the menu. Including the sangria and tequila. The fish tacos and the lamb is the most amazing and this place is perfect for sharing with friends or workmates. The mushroom quaesadilla is definitely worthwhile to try also. Basically this place could bankrupt you by having to try everything on the menu. And generally sharing plates are designed for that!
A
Always have the most delicious food here and the staff are fantastic. It can take a while to be seated on busy nights, but you can go and sit at the bar around the corner and enjoy a sangria in the meantime. Favourite dish would have to be the mushroom quesadilla.
Frank
The one and only Mexican restaurant to go to in Auckland if you are wondering which Mexican place to try.... I still remember when it opened, it was a sensation. Superb Mexican sharing plates, high class serving staff, decor to die for. It always had a wait to get in, so took us forever to finally get in, and that was even after having to wait at their little nearby bar... Certainly a massive transformation from the Kiwi Tavern that I used to frequent there. To repeat the other unqualified diners here, yes the fried chicken is the best, but so is the fish taco (wow what a burst of heat.. I almost died :-), and so too the cocktails!
Chloe Marie
my absolute favorite place to go in britomart! have never seen a Mexican place so vibrant and well decorated, and the margaritas and sangria are so good they will have you feeling like you're literally in mexico. Such a great place to be with friends for a quiet drink and there guacamole & salsa is to die for! amazing will be returning again and again to this little get away spot! i could say so many more amazing things but i would be here all day, so if you havent been to mexico, what are you waiting for!!

■ Incredible food<br/>■ Awesome Service<br/>■ Pretty decor<br/><br/>■ Small portion sizes<br/>■ Unable to make bookings<br/><br/>I'm so in love with this place! It really gets the vibe started and such a fun little hideaway for a lunch or evening with friends. Their menu choices are quite limited but it has enough variety and a great selection of traditional Mexican tapas and an almost endless list of drinks and cocktails.<br/><br/>We got some of their specialties, quesadillas to share and a few drinks and they were all brought out in cute little pots and pans. Their fried chicken is legit some of the best I've tried!! Got some tight competition with Orleans ;) Their menu is seasonal and so you're always gonna be given fresh and tasty options to choose from for future visits. I'm really keen on trying their Sangria next time coz I've heard it's amazing!<br/><br/>Their service is also impressive, with recommendations and the food arrives real fast to your table. Only downbuzz being that you can't make bookings and so gotta catch them when they aren't too busy since the place is a little crammed and short on space. The idea's pretty much centred around ordering a good mix of snacks and specialties to share between each other which is why it's so perfect for groups coz you get to try a palette of flavors at once.<br/><br/>Overall, this place is sugar and spice and everything nice. Lively atmosphere and beautiful decor to match! Would definitely recommend.
Rojas
The blanco sangria here is pretty good compared to other places; sweet and refreshing. We also had the cauliflower and chorizo quesadillas; these were OK but really lacked flavour, the salsa that came with it was ok but lacked a spicy kick. The equistes was interesting; fried corn with sauces put into soft burritos, the flavours were surprisingly complimentary. <br/>The corn maize was a bit strange, corn flour ball deep fried with smoked fish inside, the smoked fish didn't really work that well even with salsa.<br/>The fried chicken was decent, a mild spicy coating with juicy chicken inside. This was probably the standout dish for us.<br/><br/>Overall the food at Mexico is average, the staff, however, are quite nice and the food comes out quickly. Worth a visit
Alix
This is a favourite of mine, always a great place to meet a friend. Sharing plates is ideal here. Grab a jug of sangria, spicy chicken nibbles and ceviche - and you're good to go!
Hui Shi
Just had free tacos here(though coupon expired yesterday...), also prawn tostada and chips, lovely atmosphere and friendly stuff^ ^recommend
Jessica Li
Did not disappoint! The meal was filling, generous and decently priced. My chicken quesdillas with jalapeno dip was sooo good! It wasnt too spicy but the heat was definitely there. The food came out fast as well so everything was nice and warm. Would definitely be back :)
Zoe Bowker
Ok this place has one reason to visit here, and it's a good one - the Mexico fried chicken. It's mind blowingly good, and the reason I have been back at least ten times. The tacos are also good but selection and tastiness varies from month to month with the menu and with the specials. Everything else is a side dish compared to the chicken in my books. The one thing that stands out besides the chicken (fab, again), is the service. It's not great. Staff are often too deep in conversation to notice that you are waving your arms wildly for attention - just for a drink, to know where the heck your food is, anything! The service has been a bugbear every time I've visited. Please don't just employ pretty 19 year olds who want to be elsewhere - some of us are hungry and thirsty and want to give you money to remedy this! The chicken and margaritas are so good they make you put up with it though.

Ambience was very good, very busy but we were served very nicely, great food as well. The drinks were definitely a highlight suggested by a friend. A great experience, wish I could try the dessert next time.

In love with this place. Came here with a couple of peeps three times. Always ordered the Quesidillas. Staff are always helpful and friendly. Lovely atmosphere-nice place to take someone for a date ;) Meals were served in a timely manner so didn't have to wait very long .Will def be back

I went to dinner here with my 7 year old daughter last night. We were greeted by lovely friendly staff and shortly after being seated the waitress bought my daughter a kids menu and activity sheet with colouring pencils. The food was delicious and came quickly. The staff were so attentive and helpful with vegan options and suggestions. We got corn chips with quaccamole and salsa - best corn chips ever!!! My daughter had a cheese and avocado quesadilla from the kids menu (was a chicken one) which they altered to be vegetarian for her - she loved it. I got the corn quesadilla made vegan - which was so tasty with the assorted Culley's hot sauces. Fantastic dinner choice for date night with my girl.

Very nice vegetarian food. Lovely ambiance with Mexican music . Worth spending money. Friendly staff with smile on face. Me and my partner both enjoyed :)
Lyle
Mexican done right! Started with the guacamole and a mix of soft shell tacos (chicken, beef) and Quesadillas, and finished it all with a variety of interesting Margarita interpretations and Churros. Loved it all, and the service and atmosphere were great to boot.

I went here for lunch with my work friends today, we were seated straight away which was good. Our server greeted us and got us water straight away which was nice, however didn't come back to take our food order for quite some time (10-15mins). I ordered the Lamb Quesadilla and my work friends both got the Chicken Quesadilla. The food came out and it looked really nice on the board. The food itself was nice but I have had better. I would come back with friends if they wanted to go.

Fantastic atmosphere and staff makes you feel special and comfortable and always make sure everything is ok which is great service. The food is always spot on and the original britomart Mexico is the best so far compared to the other branches we have tried at takapuna North shore , Ponsonby and Ellerslie . We had the beef , chicken tacos, healthy special salad and more chicken which was tasty and hit the spot everytime and washing it down the the melon and mint margaritas in a crafe . Great service , food and atmosphere - highly recommended !

I love soft shell tacos, but there aren't many places in New Zealand that have them. Most Mexican places offer only hard shell variants. This new Mexican place, simply called Mexico (and across the road from 'China', haha) in Downtown Auckland, is a new favourite place of the locals. Open from 12pm every day, you'll be lucky if you get a place straight away each evening. It doesn't matter if it's a weekday or a weekend, the place is always crowded and the waiting list long. There's no way around it, because they don't take bookings, either!

I have been here a few times since moving to Auckland. When I visited last, they had just come out with their spring menu. It is absolutely perfect for sharing! My friend and I got the: patatas de maize w jalapeño creme & black olive powder, fried chicken (of course), and mushroom chimichangas w green olive, leek, queso, cactus & salsa asada to share. The fried chicken is my absolute favourite thing on the menu. I swear I could eat a bucket of the stuff and I would be a happy camper. The patatas de maize was a strong competitor for the 'favourite spot' though. I have had their soft shell tacos and quesadillas before, and I recommend them both too!<br/><br/>I absolutely love the vibe and decor of the place! Every wall and shelf is covered with something different and unique. It is definitely a talking point. They typically play music that adds to the atmosphere as well :) I found the service was quick and the staff were helpful when it came to describing the options and recommending favourites/most popular items. <br/><br/>I had an absolutely lovely time here and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone and everyone! :)
Sarah M
A go-to when I'm in the city. Like all Mexicos, it's so simply and highly effective! You can spend $100 for 3 people and eat like kings. Love their selection of taco's (I had 2 of the fish ones) and the quesedea was delicious. I would order a bucket of their fried chicken if I could!!! Pacifico beer by the bottle is always good! The guacamole is so nice, but shame the portions aren't bigger. Might just order 2 next time! Staff real nice and service is always quick.
Sushmitha D
Okay I'm a sucker for Mexican food so it's almost next to impossible for me to not like any form of it. I stumbled into this establishment on a sunny afternoon and absolutely fell in love with the ambiance. It's a nice sheltered and cool hangout that dishes out some very tasty food! I had the quesadillas and Mexican Coke and loved both! Can't wait to visit again.

We've been here a couple of times now and each time the service has been wonderful and the food has been delicious! The waiters/waitresses are informative re the specials and really make the restaurant have a chilled and welcoming vibe. For the food we have tried: guacemole with chips, salsa roja with chips, chicken quesedilla (with cheese and no cheese), fried chicken, tacos (chicken and pork), green bean/beetroot salad and the churros. The majority of the food has been delicious and on point - particular highlights were the churros (best we have ever had) and the quesedillas. The green bean/beetroot salad was nice for some added freshness but was compromised mainly of onions which wasn't the nicest. The summer menu has been released since we last came here - we will definitely be back to try some of the new items! Sangria for $15 on a Sunday is a must too - great price and great flavour. One of our favourite restaurants in Auckland.<br/><br/>Edit: came here Sunday again for a late lunch/early dinner. Food was great as always, particularly the new silverbeet and kumara salad! Service however wasn't as good as we have had previously. It took a little while before we were served, and when the food did arrive we received the majority together (chicken, quesedillas) but the salad took an additional 10 minutes and we even had to ask where it was.
WESTY5
My son took me here for lunch had a wonderful atmosphere and great food will certainly go again service was very good <br/>The place was a lie dark however I really enjoyed the experience
Dxzx
Damn Mexico, what happened? We were seated and waited 15 minutes before anyone came to serve us. Had to ask for water twice before actually getting any. Food was fine but prices seem to keep going up and ingredients are only getting more scarce. Service was a mess. Pretty reluctant to go back anytime soon.
Jennifer Orsatti
Amazing food! Love the flavours. And servers great recommendations and fast service! Amazing restaurant. Highly recommend going here. Won't be disappointed.
Stephy_NakiGirl
Have been to Mexico before but not for some time. Was an average visit unfortunately with some dishes a hit & others not so much.<br/>Hits:<br/>The regular margarita was delicious. Great to know as its one of their specialties but something that people can get wrong.<br/>The chicken quesadilla was yum. My friend asked for no cheese with this and it was still great. The guacamole with house made chips was also great. Lots of avocado chunks & a bit of a kick. <br/>The Mexican fried chicken which is their speciality was nice but lacked something. I think it's because it is fried and then served with a creamy sauce. I've had it before but it didn't seem as nice. Same can be said for the Patata (fried polenta). This was a dish we didn't finish. They didn't have much flavour & lacked a little salt. Again served with a creamy sauce didn't help this. We actually found that dipping them into the guacamole came them the flavour they needed. <br/>We will be back but will wait for some new menu options if choosing more than a few dishes.
Fiona M
We had lunch here yesterday for the first time. The restaurant itself is cool and beautifully set up with Mexican decorations etc adorning the walls. The staff were friendly and helpful, explaining how to order and how much food they recommended for two. They had their faces painted for Halloween which was pretty cool. The food was fresh and delicious. We had the guacamole with awesome salty crispy chips, the jalepenos, the crispy chicken and some quesidilla. We ordered a wine and beer but then moved onto margaritas. We will definitely be back, I recommend it for sure.
Mariajosemvw
Love this place, the price is perfect, the food amazing, the atmosphere too. Omg the Ceviche is absolutely delirious. Really really good an the Sangria I love it! Mi favorite drink here in Auckland I need to tray Tinto sangria, unbelievable

I really rate this place! its definitely one of those places that gets a weekend started! lovely fun environment for a group setting, food is tapas style sharing meals and they have some of the best tacos I have had , the chicken here is also done really well!
Harry G
Booked a table for 15 people for a company event at their Takapuna location. They asked us to confirm the booking the day before and never answered the telephone. I called over twenty times throughout the day and no answer! Will never be interested in going back there !
Rebecca MacDonald
Mexico is one of my all time favourites and Mexico Britomart was the first one I ever went to. I haven't been here in a while as the Ponsonby one is more convenient but decided to meet a friend for lunch. We got our usual of guacamole, fried chicken and a soft shell taco each. Delicious and the perfect mid day treat.
Razelle Icaro
I'm going to admit, I wasn't sure about entering the restaurant because of its interior. But I always walk past it so I finally decided to give it a go. I wasn't that hungry so I only ordered the soft tacos and the potato side dish. The soft tacos were quite small but you'll be surprised to how filling they are. It was really tasty too I reckon! Lovely menu full of awesome flavours and all things tantalising! great atmosphere especially for things like birthdays, definitely a good place for a first date with all the small tasting options. The fried chicken here is grrrrreaaat! #g1

Food is good. Service is OK. You have to get here at the right time because it gets pretty busy at times. That being said it adds to the busy atmosphere. Keeps everything lively.
Ryan Lal
Good Mexican food is hard to come by in Auckland, we are really limited for choice here. I have been to Mexico a few times and return mainly for one item. If you are hoping to go for dinner on a weekend or a Friday you may be disappointing as they don't do bookings unless they are for large tables. <br/> <br/>The decor of the place is authentic however the tables are generally very close to each other so it can be difficult for groups. The service can also vary from day to day depending on how busy they are. <br/><br/>The fried chicken here really is the star of the show and its what Mexico are famous for. Make sure you don't miss it because the other things on the menu just aren't as good. I have tried some of the tacos and quesadilla's here but really most of the food is lacking in flavor. I am missing the staples of what great Mexican food is like the chilli, the lime, coriander etc. The flavors are quiet toned down boring.
Ping
First time there today and I ordered the guacamole as well as the fish taco. Both were very flavoursome and fresh. The guacamole was a bit salty for my taste*, or was it because the salt on the chips…? As for the fish taco, you can it's good when the aromas hit you before seeing the dish :D I'm not sure what the standard size for tacos is, but one wouldn't be enough for a meal in my opinion**. All in all, a great experience :-) Oh, and Did I mention the staff were really nice and I love the chilli sauce options? Well, now I did :P<br/>* when I make my own guacamole I tend to go overload on lemon/lime juice, onion and peppers, so if you like Thai food or puts Tabasco sauce on everything, then the guacamole here won't have much of a kick<br/>**my appetite is satisfied with somewhere between 1 to 2 Big Macs :D<br/>
HJ
Great food and friendly staff! Can't go wrong with the MFC (mexican fried chicken) - definitely a must try! The look and feel of this place is fun and energetic. <br/>Only problem is you can't book here (unless you have a really big group) so wait times can be 30mins + plus during peak times, but they do take your mobile number and will call when your tables free which is a great idea. Would recommend to any one that loves a bit of kick in there food.

Came here last Friday for a quick meal after work. We both had the Restaurant Month special ($25 for 2 courses) and a sangria blanco. <br/><br/>Service was a little patchy seeing they weren't busy but the food was great. The prawns on the tostada were plump and generous and the Taco Al Arabe (lamb) was good. Plenty of vegetables and lovely presentation. Sangria is refreshing bunt isn't strong...doesn't really taste like an alcoholic drink.<br/><br/>It was nice to have items that weren't all deep fried, though I do like their fried chicken.<br/><br/>Love the interior design of the restaurant which is in line with the other Mexico restaurants.<br/><br/>Edit: I've been back since and with my vegetarian friend in tow. We ordered a bunch of vegetarian dishes and I polished off their very good fried chicken. It's quite a lot of chicken for one person but being a special occasion, I ate all of it. Would be rude not to.

I've been here a few times for dinner/drinks after work. Staff are really attentive and friendly and it's an awesome atmosphere. The food is pretty good, my fav is the pork taco and chicken quesadilla. YUM.
FoodLoco
Not a fan of the wait times..<br/>I believe you only book a table if you 6+ prople also if you have morw 10 you can only order from there $35 pp menu which doesn't include drinks or desserts.<br/>I love their fried chicken tho!
Ryan
The fried chicken was a winner. Super crunchy, juicy and everything you expect from a good fried chicken, beautiful sauce. Everything else was on the average side. Nothing was bad but didn't wow in terms of flavour.<br/><br/>However atmosphere is fun - service was ok. Nice place for a catchup though.
Rebecca Ellis
Had a wonderful experience her over the weekend. The chicken quesadilla is absolutely delicious! And so were the churros!! The food and experience is better when you share the food between people. We got a couple of the non alcoholic sodas/beverages and they were yummy!! The service was very friendly overall. The only thing that let down the experience a little was the chairs, they were a little uncomfortable.

This is one of our favourite places to have a fun Friday lunch, with a sharing style menu it's best experienced with a group of friends who are happy to go all in together and try a few things.<br/><br/>The menu rotates fairly regularly but consistently delicious menu elements are the Fried Chicken and whichever Quesadilla currently is matched with the Blackened Onion Crema. <br/><br/>If you're dining with a group of 10 plus you absolutely cannot go past the Fiesta Menu. For $35 you get pretty much the whole menu. Both times I've done this we've been unable to finish our food because there is so much! But at the same time you desperately want to because it's all so good. <br/><br/>Like many sharing restaurants, if you go wanting to have your own food to yourself you may find it an expensive and potentially disappointing experience. If you go with a group however, it's amazing. Definitely order a few quesadillas, they're delicious and filling. <br/><br/>This Mexico can be insanely busy at the end of the week (Thursday, Friday, Saturday), if you're thinking of taking kids keep in mind that you may have to wait for a table, and if it's getting later your fellow patrons will more than likely be a crowd who tend to take advantage of the rather delicious selection of Margaritas and Sangria. <br/><br/>If you like hot sauce, make sure you grab a bottle of the Chipotle and Mango sauces to take home. You won't regret it!
Victoria
Just ok for me. Would like to go back to try a few other things but nothing really wowed me. Had a few of the tacos, the fried chicken and quesadillas but didn't get that 'party in the mouth' of spices and fresh flavours I look forward to with Mexican. Maybe i've just had better! <br/><br/>Will give it another shot if in the area but won't be going out of my way.

This is a lively place to get good Mexican food. This outlet seems to be busy whenever we visit, but it adds to the fun. The noise is an accompaniment to the Mexican flavours. Love their tacos and quesadillas. Their cold coffee is a must try too!

My go to place in Britomart for a fail safe amazing time when you can't decide what to eat. <br/><br/>A moody but festive atmosphere, friendly & attentive staff and a fantastic menu. The guacamole, fried chicken and quesadillas are definitely my favourite items on the menu. They also do amazing sangrias, as well as non-alcoholic drinks that are seriously delicious!<br/><br/>Sarah Reynolds #challenge

Went here for dinner tonight. I've only been to the Takapuna Mexico so it was my firsy time here. I love the vibe of this place. The decor is so interesting and the relax environment. <br/><br/>You can't not try the chicken! We got two bowls of it and it was so good. We also had a variety of soft tacos. Mine was the prawn soft taco and I loved it. It was nice and soft and fresh. <br/><br/>The only downside was I ordered a drink and they forgot about it but it wasn't put on our bill. Other than that, I had a lovely time here.

Arrived around 8pm on a Friday night this place gets booked real fast. They take your name and number and call you when your table is ready. <br/>Great little bar around the corner which is also apart of Mexico.<br/>We had the guacamole with home made tortilla chips - YUM !!!!<br/><br/>Also the lamb soft she'll taco Mmmm with the Mexican spicy chicken.<br/><br/>Food and atmosphere amazing !!! Only down side is that it would have been nice if someone asked us how hot we would like the chicken (mega spicy) and if we wanted the "blistering" jalapeños on our guacamole.<br/><br/>Will Def be back though :)

great service.<br/>place was packed and food came out so fast.<br/>yummy food, never disappointed, great drinks on offer.<br/><br/>Staff here are so polite and helpful. the suggestions for food is top notch.<br/><br/>the host was very helpful and made us feel welcome and comfortable.<br/><br/>great range of delicious food and drinks.<br/>I brought my family here and they all loved it.<br/>I have been here 3 times now and each time has been a great Hispanic experience :)

Fantastic food! Came here for a late lunch on a Sunday. Had great service, great atmosphere, nice and warm in the cold weather! Had the chickpea patatas to start which were incredible, better than expected, and tried 3 types of tacos between us (fish which was a special, roast pumpkin and pulled pork). All had such fantastic, complex flavour. Finished off with the churros and a carafe of the plum margaritas. Delicious. No complaints, wish I could eat here every day!<br/>

Fried chicken. You have to try the fried chicken. <br/><br/>..Now that is out of the way, Mexico is a fun place to dine, and they change their menu twice a year to keep things interesting. The tacos (particularly the fish taco and pork belly) are incredible.<br/><br/>That being said, some of the weekly specials can be a bit disappointing, both in portion size and taste. <br/><br/>The staff here are very attentive and friendly. They do not take bookings, so if you want to dine on a Friday or Saturday night get in early!
Gianina Castro
Love how the Mexico theme flows through even in the toilet. The food we had was super delicious. <br/><br/>The chilli churros weren't my cup of tea but my friends loved it, so maybe it was just me. Aside from that, everything else was delish. Would definitely come back!
Holly Grey
been here on many occassions. Great, tasty and amazingly priced food that fills you up. I go here with my friends often and we always get the fried chicken and the chips, the fish tacos are amazing also and I absolutely love the 3 cheese quesadilla on their winter menu! and the service is very prompt and attentive!

TOP 10 PICK - This super cool Mexican joint is the bomb of all Mexican served in Britomart. The fried chicken, the range of tacos will have you grasping for more. The staff are super friendly and bubbly which make for a great vibe. The Mexican music is loud and pumping, which gear you up for a great evening out, if you are so inclined. Dont forget the famous most delish Black Doris Margarita. At $25 a jug youll be ordering more - because you end up practically sculling this drink as it is so good. BUT WAIT theres more - Ive been introduced to the Coconut margarita and this is my favourite now! Its a must try people
Table For One
This place is my midweek mood booster.<br/>The menu seems to be seasonal, there's always new options. It's all tasty, especially the quesdialls. But most of the time I go with the fried chicken option because it just tastes so darn good. There is also a great selection of drinks, sorry Coca Cola fans it's the real deal here. Mexican Cola all the way.<br/>I love the atmosphere of this place. With the low lighting, walls covered in Mexcian themed artwork, and the exposed style of the kitchen cabinets it feels like you're not in the Auckland CBD. Which is exactly what you're after come Wednesday evening!<br/>The staff are friendly and in the know about the menu options and what might suit your taste buds if you've never been. The food is prepared quickly and when it's not packed (so any night aside from Friday and Saturday) it's a good last minute dining choice. I've been to a couple of the other Mexico restaurants around NZ, but this one is my fave.<br/>One of the main reasons that I've rated this place so highly is because I always bring visitors/Auckland newbies here and it never disappoints. Cheers for the great memories Mexico!

I enjoyed a pleasant lunch here today. Pretty sure they have changed the menu within the last few months because they didn't have my favourite fish taco (hence my average score). I had the pumpkin soft shell taco which was yummy, the prawn one was so-so. The corn chips are so more-ish, I could go there just for those! The hubby LOVES the Mexican fried chicken and always has to have a double order as it is quite a small serve, but well worth it in his eyes. I like the atmosphere and service of Mexico. I must be one of the lucky ones who gets in at the right time because I have never had a problem with it being overcrowded, like other reviewers have noted. It is Mexican theme so expect that kind of atmosphere and enjoy it.

Not the first time I've been to this place, and it didn't let me down. Came here for lunch on a Monday around 1pm (a good time and day to avoid the hectic time!). Service was quick to seat us wherever we liked, given a good amount of time to order and were very friendly.<br/>I had the eggplant quesadilla which was very good for a vegetarian meal, the sauce that accompanied it was extremely good. I also had the crispy olives which were full of flavour and the white dipping sauce calmed the bitter olives and was an oral delight. To drink, I had the horchata which is a rice milk that has coconut bits and banana in it, and it is an aquired taste but I found it a very good accompaniment with the food. Overall, the tasty food and great atmosphere was a good experience, and I highly recommend this place!

It was truly an enjoyable evening spent here. I think that may have largely been due to the amazing top shelf tequilas and delicious margaritas consumed. However, it is pretty expensive and while the food was good, there was more to be desired by way of portion sizes and punch!
DVDM
Review: Flavoursome food! Some minor let-downs.<br/><br/>The service was fast and efficient, however the plantain chips weren't crunchy, quite chewy actually. However, the atmosphere was very enjoyable, and the portions and flavours of the taco's were highly enjoyable. Keep it up, and try to maintain quality across other meals.

...Is THAT it!? Damn they must have tiny chickens in Mexico... ?The Mexico Fried chicken was literally, 9 nicely coated, but really tanned, popcornish chicken bits... Uuuummm clutching at straws here, but a possible reason could be that; the chef disguarded the tiny-er burnt pieces, and had run out of mini chicken for the day?<br/><br/>The house made corn chips were good though. Nice and crunchy, with a zingy salsa roja! ? The juices are bangin' - coriander and lime has a nice hit, and the orange and ginger will awaken your tastebuds.<br/><br/>What they lacked in chicken they made up for in fish! We coulda fed the masses on the ceviche and made a Bible story out of it! In fact... I think I will take the oppourtunity to say it was almost like seeing a Mexican tapas version of David next to a Mexican tapas Goliath. *Ding ding ding* Introduciiiing 'Fresh and tasty' Goliath vs 'Too much sun' David who needs to work on his bulkiiiing...<br/><br/>Thanks for the tip on the juice selection waitress lady! I'll have to plan my next visit at the next chicken high tide. Hasta Luego!

Always been a place we can depend on to have a good time; the food is nice, simple and addictive. I usually order 4-5 tacos, the fried chicken and another shared tapas with the michelada beers for two people and have always been satisfied with the dining experience. The food menu changes from time to time which makes every visit a new exciting experience. Service is always fast and friendly, and the place is always pumping and crowded. Be prepared to cram up a bit with others, knuckle down and stuff your face.<br/><br/>Cuatro Yums.

The original Mexico! Had lots of memories here so glad they opened one all around so no matter where you are you can have m@xico I love tha fact the menu changes 4 times a year!!! I love Mexico only down fall is I do t have a chef to cook this for me at home in my fat pants we love this place

Coasting to a Close?. A very disappointing visit to Mexico .... good atmosphere, very colourful and lively, but far too much of the 'too cool for school' attitude - certainly not warranted and never likely to engender return business. Tacos of 'pork cheek' consisted of inedible large lumps of belly pork, mainly fat .... the 'octopus' in the pinchos was shreds of far from fresh calamari and the sausage pieces were served raw in the middle - possibly as a consequence of being forgotton from the order and hurried on after being enquired after. Margaritas and beef taco were fine, but a special of 'prawn taco' contained a single heavily battered prawn and was so spicy as to be mouth numbing.
Rosely
Nice little Mexican tapas restaurant with clean, sharp flavoured, sharing style food. The sweet corn tortillas were the standout with the fish soft taco coming second. We also had the ceviche, pork check taco, prawn and mussel special which were also good. The Cava sangria was lovely & a nice complement to the meal. This place is ideal for a no fuss quick simple dinner with friends.

It's fun, colourful, young, on trend and an easy cheap eat; service casual but friendly; good for sharing tastes not mains. Worth a nibble including specials. Aussies liked it!

Perfect place to unwind after a long day. Love the chilled out vibe and the extremely flavourful food. Not a fan of the seating plan and the lack of space. Pretty cramped up.
Lauren
Only went in for a small snack but wow! Fast and friendly service that makes you feel at home, along with delicious food! I ordered the coconut&mint cocktail which was amazing (highly recommend) as well as the fried chicken - YUM!

I'm not sure about this place. <br/><br/>The downsides...very crowded. Small dining area. Due to these two factors, its always quite loud and hard to actually hear the people you're with. And lastly, the thing I find most disheartening is the prices on their outrageously small portions. <br/><br/>I'm still rating it a 3.0 because however small their portions may be, it's hard to deny the fact that everything tastes pretty amazing. Just like everyone else mentioned, their chicken is pretty spot on, but I think the star of the place are their tacos.<br/><br/>Would probably only go to this place is a friend absolutely insisted on it.
Ninjunkie
Great food and really cool place. Had lunch here last and enjoyed it very much. The drinks are amazing too. Price is reasonable for the quality of food. I love Mexican food and Mexico delivers it very well.
Maddy
The mains were good as always however everything else was terrible. They were hardly busy and there was a 30 minute wait. The maitre'd was not only rude but couldn't organise herself out of a wet paper bag and later in the evening when sections were still busy she had the waitress close other sections leaving customers unattended for lengthy periods. The waitress herself was very unattentive, my table didn't get meal checked once and we had to wave her down to order our mains and desserts. The dessert was terrible, and we sent it back. It was one of the specials - the chilli chocolate mousse. They had also run out of espresso. This was definitely the worst experience I've had at Mexico and will from now on be avoiding the Britomart branch.
Amy @ My Dining Journey
I adore the food at Mexico but my average rating for this particular Meixco is due to the small and crowded dining area and the average wait time of 45 minutes to an hour for a table during their busy times. There has been several occasions where we gave up waiting and walked across the street for a quick bite at the other eateries in the Britomart area. And during the times where we were lucky enough to get a table, the food came out slowly and the tables were so close to each other, we could have rubbed shoulders with the customers sitting next to us. <br/><br/>Food wise, you can expect the usual good Mexican cuisine that you can find at the other Mexico outlets and the same can be said about their margaritas and sangrias. Their famous fried chicken and tacos is spot on and they serve some of the best guacamole in town. If you’re not after an alcoholic drink, then try their cold brew coffee!

Food = little below average <br/>Service = average<br/>Atmosphere = jammed and noisy, dim light hard to see anything

Very good food that's all I say
Derrick Santos
Despite having never eaten there, just wanted to put it out there that their service is horrible, we've been rejected twice on so-called 'busy nights' when there are actually free seats, and even another couple with menus in their hands. Don't think this restaurant needs any money from customers at all. Good job.
Danielle
The food wasnt necessarily bad...however, it was definitely false advertisement. I am from Texas, in the United States. I lived across the border of Mexico for the first 19 years of my life before I moved to New Zealand. This is not Mexican food! As a matter of fact this is an absolute disgrace to Mexican food!!!! In no Mexican restaurant would you find eggplant in a soft taco. Or squid...in anything. It's like you guys tried to take the name of Mexican food but none of the actual ingredients. Do me a favor and take a trip to Mexico...And then consider renaming your restaurant because this is such a lie. "get the authentic tastes of Mexico" HA! ya right
Neila
Over hyped place but still lots of people go. It's fun I guess. There has been no problems in food or service but it is extremely pricey in my opinion. Good for middle class and above though! There was a line anyway what do you expect.
Fleur Peps
Food = good. Service = average. Atmosphere = fine if you don't mind the prospect of early onset hearing loss. Honestly it's just far too loud in here and I almost tripped trying to get to the bathrooms due to the dim lighting. It's just not a pleasant dining experience when trying to have a conversation with friends. Everyone is shouting. to add to this, the tables are so cramped in there that you're basically shouting over all your surrounding diners. Maybe bring the music down a tad and space the tables out a bit more.

We have been to Mexico several times and unfortunately every visit is worse than the one before. The food is ok but nothing special. The service is bad, in particular the guy on the front desk. He is rude, arrogant and entitled and no one should be subjected to his attitude. Get rid of him and maybe the place will improve but we won't be returning.
Leigh
Went to Mexico a few weeks ago with my partner and were seated right away. The first thing we noticed was how fantastic the atmosphere was. The service we received was a rather rigid and the food was rather expensive for the small sizes given. They did however make a really good strawberry margarita. All in all an ok night out but there are other establishments in the area we would rather frequent.
Angela Lina
I always come here when friends ask to hang out at a bar, great ambience, very intimate table seating and staff are all willing to help you with anything.<br/>Food tastes great but can be considered quite $$ for the amount you get. Jugs of margaritas are affordable compared to the country club but do seem a little watered down.<br/>A little dark but maybe that's their style.
James Brown
Went with my wife last weekend and while we didn't order a lot was impressed with the food as well as the fit out and service.<br/>Have spent some time in Mexico (central / south-western / south-eastern) but as food there is very regional hard to match to what I had there (just different parts of the country I suppose) but clear that the standard of the food far superior to Mexican Cafe etc.<br/>Only 'criticism' is that that if anything a bit expensive.
James Lee
I went to Mexico Britomart with 7 friends. <br/>The waiter at the door asked me to register first and told me that we needed to wait for 45 minutes. They would text me when the table became ready. <br/>We waited outside the restaurant, after 45 minutes he said ouww the table is not ready yet ... please wait for another 15 min ... We waited for 2 hours before we got our table. Very terrible service. <br/>The food was quite expensive and small in portion. <br/>We will not go back to this place for sure.
Amy Tanabe
Great Vibe, Great Food, Fun Staff and pretty good Bang for your Buck. They recently launched some new, non alcoholic, drinks which are delicious! My partner and I returned the next day just so we could try more flavors.
Felix
I went to this restaurant with my girlfriend. It took us half an hour walking around Britomart to find it. Once we were there, we were offered the worst seats in the whole area, it felt like if we were looking at the wall. I would expect this from a pub in the middle of nowhere, but not in a restaurant where you pay $60. The staff was rather unfriendly, got the orders mixed and were dropping stuff on the floor all the time. The food was okay, although the portions could have been not as small. I think that the staff needs to be trained more often or at least be more smiley!
Bonsai
I've only been to Mexico once, but really enjoyed the experience. <br/><br/>I was with a big group, and we were fortunate to snaffle a table. The place is super-busy, cramped, and in summer very hot, so if you are in the mood for an intimate conversation, this is not the place for you.<br/><br/>The prices are very, very reasonable, and I thoroughly enjoyed my selection (broccoli taco and mushroom quesadilla). The salsa that came with the corn chips was the only real disappointment - very watery.<br/><br/>I probably won't return in a hurry, but that's simply because I don't like crowds. Food-wise, very yummy indeed.
Helen Gyde
Went to Mexico Britomart in a group of six and must say we didn't pick the restaurant after going to the Takapuna one several months earlier and swearing we would never return.<br/><br/>That said the Britomart restaurant was a massive improvement and I would happily return. It was full but we were lucky enough to get a table immediately. Service was quick, both in terms of ordering (staff instantly available) and receiving both food and drinks. The tomato juice was spiced to perfection, the margaritas as described on the menu and the food (we ordered a good selection of different dishes) to die for.<br/>We went on a Thursday night over the Christmas period so were probably lucky that loads of people were out of town.<br/>Exceeded expectations.
Monica
I quite like Mexico, however I would hesitate to go due to business and having to wait 1-2 hours for a table. Though when going at an unbusy time, food is really yum - give quesidillas and their fried chick a go and they come out quick. It's easy to share plates with someone, however I would say the portions are a bit small as you'd have to buy quite a few things to be filled up. It's quite dark inside but good if you like that look, has a nice atmosphere to the place when it's not too loud.
Emer Kelleher
This is the first time I've written a review, but my experience was so poor I had to rate this restaurant!<br/>A group of 6 of us went Monday last week. We waited over 5 minutes before someone came to speak to us, and after much thought and discussion with another member of staff they told us it'd be a half hour wait. One of my friends had a look inside and asked what was wrong with the table by the window, where a group of people had left before we came in (we were beside the bookings book and could see there were no more!)? Another waitress came along and asked us to wait 5 minutes til she cleared the table!!! Don't know why we were told 30 mins to start off with.<br/>After we seated a waiter eventually brought us some warm water. As we hadn't been there before he explained how the menu generally worked (not much help as portions sizes were not as described!). He pointed to a board with the specials on it, but most of us couldn't see it as it was quite far away &amp; a pillar blocked the board. The waiter then reluctantly read them from his pad. <br/>We all ordered meals and drinks. 5 of the 6 drinks were served, and then the meals came out sporadically. The first waitress just started putting dishes down on the table and we had no one idea what was what!!! Another waiter came and told us what they were.... still no 6th drink! After we advised we were still waiting on a glass of red wine, it took another 10 mins to come! The waiter apologised saying he forget to put it through so I kindly joking, but serious (as Id waited over a half hr) "So it wont be on our bill then!" :) and he just said hmmm I don't know!!<br/>Anyway nothing about the food was amazing, just some ok dishes! Luckily they brought out an extra Lamb Taco (on special at $12) as it was so small the lad who ordered it actually presumed 2 came as part of the dish! The vegetables and mayo dip was terrible. They didn't have any sour cream (because its a 'Contemporary Mexician' or sides of salsa or guacamole.... we were SHOCKED!!!! So I asked for any other dip to go with my Quesidillas, and ended up being CHARGED an extra $3 for this, which I was not advised until paying the bill! I didn't particularly even want the cucumber dip but there was no sour cream! :(<br/>We were allowed to pay separately, nearly the only good thing. This was where I found out not only was I being charged for my glass of wine that took over 30 mins to come, I was being charged for the more expensive glass because I hadn't specified which I wanted!! Well why didn't the waiter ask me when he first took my order or when I had to ask a second time for my drink!! They also wanted us to pay for the extra taco we didn't even order!!! We refused!<br/>Overall some of the boys left hungry and we all left unhappy!! Little things like good service, not having to pay for extra side dip or a complimentary drink when it was forgotten by staff would of greatly improved our experience with this restaurants mediocre food!
Tony McNeight
Last week I took a friend to Mexico in Takapuna. <br/>I ordered amongst other things Quesidillas that came with a salsa, the whole dish was bland.<br/>I ordered a sour cream to go with this which duly came in a very small dish with not a lot of sour cream.<br/>When I paid the bill I was charged an EXTRA $3 for this side.<br/>There was NO mention of this 'side' on the menu or by the indifferent waitress when taking the order.<br/>I was going to mention something at checkout but my companion asked me not to, so next day I called up and left my number with Mexico head person on answer phone with contact number - but surprise no return call !!!<br/>The staff appeared to be 'order-taking' and delivering rather than having been trained in any customer skills.<br/>Mexico still seems to be filled most nights so maybe this is a whole new attitude towards dining out which I am not getting or understanding.<br/>And by the way, food - very average.
Janine Manning
Last night was our second dinner at Mexico and it will be our last. I have never written a review before but feel compelled to now as Mexico doesn't deserve the hype it receives (Emperor's new clothes stuff). Very hot inside (wasn't a hot evening), and the kitchen smoke hurt our eyes. Staff were VERY slow with the service and rude when a guest left the table to take a call (he was heading outside and got told off for walking through the thoroughfare). The beef on the kebab was so chewy - perhaps that would be acceptable if it was tasty but it was not. We didn't have to wait last night (6.00pm) but the first time we came at 8.00pm we were told max 1 hour. We were over it by the time we eventually ate at 10.30pm. <br/>I note Wolfie's point "important to get your head around what a place is trying to achieve". On that point, what are Mexico trying to achieve? Mediocre food and bad service does not make up for the inexpensive cost.
Alex Sanders
Have been to Mexico over 10 times now, and unfortunately it goes downhill each time. The tacos used to be great, now they are confused and quite awful really. The only good thing here is the chicken, and it's really good. The margaritas are good too. Forget about ordering anything else though, we are usually disappointed. Give the croquetas a miss - so bland. Oh and the service is the worst in town. Trying to order a drink is like trying to wave down a taxi in New York at 5pm - forget about it.
Wolfie W
When writing a review I think it's important to get your head around what a place is trying to achieve and assess it according to how well it succeeds. I rather think that some people who review restaurants feel that every place they visit ought to conform to their (the reviewers) own personal taste... Happily this is not the case, and we all benefit from the resulting plethora of offerings available.... Just Saying.<br/><br/>With that out the way, I can report that Mexico is a lively, fun, happening place offering authentic ethnic cuisine that is true to its roots. The choice is good without being overwhelming and the food is full of flavour and freshness... and very, very cheap. We had a selection of five small plates between two of us, a Mexican beer and a glass of Sangria all for $70. Despite it being a Saturday night we had a mere 35 min wait in the great little bar through the "skull" door before we got our call for the table - barely enough time for my second Blood Orange &amp; Mango Margarita. All the staff we interacted with were friendly and welcoming, especially our waiter. <br/><br/>Yes, it's dark, and yes, we needed a flashlight to read the menu, and yes, the music is loud. We are not 20 somethings, we are pushing 50..... we loved it. Possibly not ideal "first date" venue 'cos you will have to raise your voice to have a conversation - but there are plenty of other places you can go for that sort of date. Mexico with its art and atmosphere, great food and friendly vibe are doing what they do, and doing it well!
Janine
Mexico is a favourite of ours for tasty affordable authentic mexican food with friends. Expect to wait for your table in the weekends, but there is a little bar round the corner to keep you occupied, and once you make it inside it's worth it. Vibrant atmosphere, crazy wallpaper and helpful staff combined with a delicious selection of tasty morsels and magaritta mixes makes for a fun night out.
Sally Smart
We have been trying to get to Mexico for weeks but only managed it last night. I had read the reviews beforehand and almost changed venues but the others still wanted to go. We knew there would be a wait when we arrived so we asked how long and was told 1 hour give or take ten mins. We were fine with that and went around the corner to the smallest bar in Auckland, Ikto was cool served the best classic Margaritas and we waited until we got a call on my phone (about 1 hour later) and headed back to the restaurant. Yes, it's a bit dark especially to read the menus but that's what flash lights are for on your phone! We loved the place, staff were great, food was cheap and good, drinks were spot on. All of us loved the place and atmosphere, if you want a cool venue, that's fun, cheap, dark, plays cool music and is fairly loud this fits the bill. We would certainly take visitors there for a change, we are not young but like to think we are quite hip late 40's early 50's...try it :)
TriciaMenzies
It's cheap and cheerful but always too noisy and too dark to hear the staff and read the menu. I struggled to find anything appealing on the menu and the dishes I settled on were just too spicy. Very limited winelist too.<br/>I guess this is so popular they don't need to make much effort but I think next time I'll try another venue.
Irene Naidu
Really disappointed with Mexico - went on Friday 28th June, put our names at the door around 720pm and told there'd be an hour and half wait. We were fine to wait so went and shared a bottle of wine at a bar with my 3 friends. Returned back to Mexico after the hour and half, lined up, asked how long the wait would be as we were starving by 9pm...only to be told there'd be another 30minute wait!! Ok understand you guys were busy...BUT when the girl at the door was looking through the bookings book, other people had gotten in AFTER us!! Almost ruined our night if Mexican Café didn't come up trumps - within minutes of arriving there (and yes they were busy too), we were seated, had jugs of margaritas and food...amp up your service Mexico - It's needed!
Camilla Dadson
Mexico is incredibly loud - too loud to have a conversation. <br/><br/>The food is good and tasty and quite filling although the servings aren't big.
Alli
Great restaurant, great atmosphere and helpful friendly staff - always love it here

Went here on a Saturday afternoon for lunch! Food was fine-Margarita's good! Service was fine-but staff attitude was appalling! I asked the waitress to come in 5 minutes as we had not yet decided what to order she rolled her eyes at me and looked like I had completely ruined her day. Then the a different waiter who brought our drinks over looked so put out as we tried to work out who's drinks was who.<br/><br/>I work in hospo myself and I would never in a million years treat a customer like that-it was horrifying. The staff seemed so entitled..it was a complete put off.
Melanie Matthews
Checked this place out on a Saturday afternoon when it wasn't too busy. Great decor but servers seemed a bit cold.. some of the waitresses seemed more interested in their floral crowns than refilling our water glasses and when I asked the waiter bringing our food which tacos were which as they all looked similar he looked at me like I was an idiot. Service can make or break your business guys! Especially as I work in fine dining so my standards for these things are just that much higher. Luckily the food was incredible, fresh exciting flavors that I seriously can't wait to try again. Will be back soon.

Awesome place to grab a bite to eat. From $6-$12 a plate it’s cheap too. <br/>We went on Friday night before the comedy gala and everyone enjoyed their meals… not as much as their margaritas though!<br/>Thanks guys for a great night out

Went here with my family after loving the Takapuna one. I knew how it worked with tapa style. Decor is fantastic it's just too cramped is the only downfall! The tapas were fantastic as well as drinks. Definitely a must try for foodies! The food comes out super quick which is cool but you do feel like they're trying to rush you through a bit. Over all great though.

I love this place. Have been here twice now. The Quesadilla is very good, definitely recommend one to share (as these come in 8 pieces).<br/><br/>The Ceviche is very good. I like the style where they do not put too much coconut milk in. Lots of big fat pieces of fish and good combination of mild chillies <br/><br/>Definitely recommend this place to others... Can't wait for them to open up a store in Wellington!

The food at Mexico is a contrast to the typical interpretation of Mexican food served in New Zealand - petite servings, no stodge and delicate flavors.<br/><br/>The atmosphere in the dining area is really unique and I think it would make a great start to a big night out for a group of friends.<br/><br/>We enjoyed a range of dishes for lunch and all of them impressed us. <br/><br/>Mexico is definitely better suited to a group who want to enjoy Sangria and a range of small dishes to share.

Such a cool and quirky set up.. There was a major queue (and this was a Tuesday night), so we had to leave our names and wait for a response. The front staff were amazing, our waiter however, not so much.. Its quiet cramped, and there is no real intimacy so it is difficult to hear one another.<br/><br/>Its a great experience, food was very inexpensive but not that exciting, quiet bland considering its Mexican.<br/><br/>Overall, 6/10

Big foodie and absolutely blown away. the service great. the margaritas - best have ever tasted. But the food. Sublime. I have told everyone I know about this place who are also foodies and they are all starting to go. Up there in one of the best all round experiences (and we eat in loads of places up and down NZ) for years. thank you, I dont want to give you 5 stars because I dont want to miss out in a table!

Saturday night at 6pm arrived down the back alley and had a few drinks in the hole in the wall bar at the rear of the restaurant. Some excellent top shelf tequilas!! We put our names down for a table for 6. They forgot us and we had to remind the maître di several times and got quite angry as others were seated ahead of us that arrived after we had, including other groups of 6. The restaurant was very busy, lively atmosphere. we were seated after 8pm. Once at the table we were able to order quickly and we ordered a large selection of tapas, tacos etc.. Food was excellent. service was slow and there were a few errors in the order. The food was very fresh and tasty and authentically Mexican, not stodgy like some Kiwi Mexican food. portions were small but well priced so order 3 or more per person if you are hungry. We will go there again on a Tuesday night so will compare with first experience. Probably need to have more staff on Busy nights and improve staff training/retention as customer service lets this restaurant down big time.

Great place. Went between Xmas and New Year and had an early dinner and beer. Great to go somewhere and be able to order several things without it costing loads like it does at many tapas places. Went again a few days later for a few beers and a few more dishes. Awesome place.

I have been to mexico 3 times<br/><br/>Absolutely Loved it everytime, yes it gets busy so be prepared to wait, but with a bar just around the corner you can kill some time.<br/><br/>This is by far the best mexican food I have tasted in NZ, just recently took a group of friends and all gave it a thumbs up. Yes portions are small, but thats the type of restaurant it is! Go with a group and order several different things to try - much better that way!<br/><br/>I don't know why people have given bad reviews about the wait staff , all three times they have been very friendly, a little slow, but what can you expect when the restaurants full! <br/><br/>will definitely go back again, and again and again :)

We came here for lunch with friends from Hamilton, who have visited Mexico and enjoy trying new Mexican places. I emailed yesterday to book, but they don't take bookings. I arrived at 11.50 (for 12.00 opening) and was told I had to wait outside. I waited, along with about 10 other people, and at 12 went in, to find the restaurant already had people seated. We sat outside under the plastic awning on the footpath. Inside is dark, loud and very cramped, luckily we sat outside. The waitress arrived to take our order as soon as we sat down, so we asked her to come back, and after 20 mins had to go and get someone. They were not helpful with the size of the food, so we got two dishes each. They are priced between $6-$12 and are really small. When I say really small, I mean tiny. An average eater would need to order at least 2-3 dishes to be satisfied. My friends ordered hot chocolate, but when it arrived we were told that there was no chilli sauce, they drank them anyway, but said they were poor. Lots of raves about this place, but I wouldn't recommend it, and won't be going back even though my husband works next door. I'm gluten free and vegan, and there was really limited choices for vegetarians and coeliacs.

I've been looking for quality Mexican food for quite some time now and have finally found it! I love tacos so right away my eye was drawn to the taco selections. I ended up getting a fish and a beef taco. I can't tell you which was better because I liked them both. The beef taco had a coconut twist on it that I really enjoyed and the classic margarita was perfect. I will be returning!<br/><br/>I took off a star because of the waitstaff. We had to get up from our table 3 times to order more drinks. Boo.

Went there with my two daughters, very cool interior, slightly abrupt waitress. Food was ok,liked the fresh herb flavours, small portions, decided to order the salad on the recommendation of the waitress, it was so salty we couldn't eat it, told the waitress, she took it out rather sternly and came back plonked it on the table and told us it's meant to be salty, it's the feta cheese. Hmmm, not what I'd call good service, we left had to pay for the salad, won't be going back, with all the good other options a cool interior doesn't quite make up for sour service and bad seasoning.

Went here for my boyfriends birthday a few weeks ago. I am gluten free, and we decided to go here as it said that this restaurant caters for this dietary restriction. When I asked the waiter what on the menu was gluten free, gave me a couple of options and then recommended the chicken special for $16, so I went with that. When it came out the portion was tiny, definitely not enough for a main meal. Was just a small piece of chicken with a few pieces of lettuce around it. When I mentioned this to the waiter when I was leaving, he just looked at me blankly and said "yeah I know its a small portion, but that's what you get"... So we just paid for our meal and said nothing more about it. I have no problem with paying more for a meal, particularly in a place with such a great atmosphere, but I think he should have told me that the portions were small, and maybe suggested getting two "mains". My boyfriend reported that his burrito was bland. Seems like a great place for a few beers and bar snacks after work, but not a place to go for a great food experience.
Jess
The service was very slow and the two guys behind the bar were uninterested in serving us, however the food is fantastic!!! But definitely would recommend a few dishes for the table as 1 dish is not enough :)

I've been here a few times over the last 3-4 months, and the first time I was really impressed by the design and feel of the place. If you're looking for somewhere to go with friends, that feels busy and has great atmosphere then this would be the place. The food was great and we didn't have to wait too long for the food to arrive - but it did take a while for our order to be taken.<br/><br/>The only gripe I have is with the staff. Recently on a Friday night I turned up with 2 friends around 8pm to have the girl on the door make me feel like a fool for even asking whether there would be a table available. <br/><br/>I knew it was busy, but clearly being a customer wanting to have dinner you'd ask if there was a table, and if not you'd be advised how long the wait was. Instead she made me feel like it was an exclusive VIP club and flipped through her book in such a snaring way, almost as if there was some priority guest list I needed to be on. Her attitude and tone of voice was pretty poor. My friends visiting from South America said they felt the attitude immediately when we walked in.<br/><br/>She didn't need to "lecture" me on the fact it was Friday night and that it gets busy - as all I wanted was a table, and obviously its busy because of people like me who come and eat there!<br/><br/>There is also a bit of a lack of space in parts - which makes it difficult to eat.<br/><br/>So in a nut shell, great food and atmosphere, but wouldn't bother going to ask for a table again even if it looked remotely busy. The door service definitely lets the place down. Not as welcoming as it should be.
Paul Dorey
Delicious authentic food, equally tasty drinks, and knowledgeable service which all create an amazing atmosphere! The fried chicken is to die for! The choice for tequila is seemingly endless, and the bar staff are extremely knowledgeable and helpful in guiding you to choose a tequila that you'll love

Visited Mexico with 5 friends on a Wednesday evening. Had a 45 minute wait for a table arriving at 7pm which seemed pretty reasonable. <br/><br/>Mexico is a great destination if you are after a busy, ecclectic and informal atmosphere. As other reviewers have noted you are squished in pretty tightly with table placings in every available nook and cranny, so come prepared to share a table. <br/><br/>The menu is quite compact - tacos and quesadillas make for substantial 'bar snacks' with an interesting selection of salads (cerviche) and chefs specials which all serve to compliment the margaritas well. You'll want to order quite a few dishes to create a full meal.

So I went to Mexico-Britomart today for lunch with a friend. As far as the ambience and decor of the place goes, it was really interesting and fitting! The music was good, not too loud.<br/>The service was average, our waitress seemed disinterested in waiting on us and when I asked if they could make my burrito spicier than usual she said "that's just the way it is made they can't change it" what? you're supposed to cater to the customer, how hard is it for a chef to tweak the dish a little to make it spicier on a customer's request? that was disappointing, if you're reading this Mexico staff, you should highly consider changing your strategy of pleasing customers.<br/>Lastly, food...it was tasty and all but wow for the price I was paying, the serving was ABYSMAL. I got the $6 soft shell taco and that is understandably small but then I got the $16 chef's special burrito and honestly it was nothing special AT ALL and it was the smallest serving size I've ever seen for a dish close to that range. Also, no outstanding flavors, what happened to Mexican spices and aroma?! The food was good but definitely dull and not what I was paying for.
Courtney Maloyd
Been here 4 times now, each time has been great, good service, and for the price of the food its great! We have got a few different dishes to share and get flavours of everything because it's so cheap! <br/><br/>Only downside is thats it's small but layout of table and chairs is bad they are way too close! I can understand wanting to get as many people in but I have been to a smaller Japanese restaurant but at least you can go to the loo without putting your bum in some poor person's face! (and they have 100% 5 star rating!)<br/><br/>But still a cool place to catch up with friends with some funky hands on food and a good mid week sangria. I will always return :)

Came here because my brother, who's a vegetarian, thought the food here tasted quite nice. Due to his preference for foods that were light on the palate, we came here expecting something tame in terms of flavor.<br/><br/>Would have to say that our expectations were met; tried their house corn chips / salsa (average), mexico fried chicken (give it a miss, it's too dry and flavorless), vegetarian qaesadilla (surprisingly tasty), green bean salad (also surprisingly tasty), pork carnitas (small bits of pork that were semi-flavorful), patataz de maiz(bland snack that requires a large dollop of mayo), and finished off our meal with some churros (decent). They had a menu of different tequilas which would've been fun to try had I been with a drinking crowd, but they wouldn't have been keen with the food. <br/><br/>We were OK with the food overall and the slightly tardy service (given it was a busy saturday 12:30 timeslot), but it wasn't bad. Come here expecting to shout your conversations out, eat something in advance, like tequila, and you'll have a pleasant time... most likely.

We went late on a Saturday afternoon. The place was packed, but we got the last table. We went because we love Mexican food and have it once a week, heard about this place and thought we'd better get down there.<br/><br/>Interesting decor, but the tables are too close together, the dining room way too noisy, I had to shout at my partner to talk. <br/><br/>The food was very average, not much flavour, not much meat, but the going rate in prices. The food was boring, Mexican should be bold flavours, sharp tangs and chilli blended with great meats and accompaniments. <br/><br/>Sadly we were very disappointed. Nice wait staff with flowers in their hair, but I don't eat those.<br/><br/>Guys, you have to give value for money and great taste to survive in Auckland. Do you want a place where friends meet every Friday for a long liquid and food lunch? Spending on average $150 per person? I am in that sort of group and you will not be getting my custom again. <br/><br/>Just not a comfortable place to lounge, pick at good food and drinks were tasteless and expensive.
Matt Cooper
what a place!<br/>we went here tonight for the 1st time it was just fantastic heaps of staff, great service and fantastic mexican food! great beer!<br/>A real gem fantastic for Auckland<br/>I see the reviews Ger's one the quesadillas were full of meat and full of flavor and had a pesto like cause on the side, The crispy Chicken was just to die for!<br/>and the mini soft taco were mouthwatering! what a night<br/>Note it gets very very busy so you could wait unto 40 min for a table! well worth it!
Gerard Ward
Four of us went there for Sunday lunch. It was very busy but we were lucky to get a table. This restaurant has a great atmosphere, cool decor, friendly waitresses, cheap prices, but unfortunately the food was very average. The quesadillas were so bland, and contained very little meat. This place needs to improve in the kitchen and then it will truly be one of Downtown Auckland's best little eateries.
David Boshier
If you feel like hair of the dog and can't face beer &amp; Yum Char on a Sunday, this is a good option.<br/><br/>The place is busy enough to take your mind off a hangover and the ice cool margarita's dull the pain.<br/><br/>The fired chicken is a must.<br/><br/>Will be back when the mood takes us.
Fay Furner
Not sure if there is a rating lower than one star but since we waited three and a half hours in the "waiting bar", a glorified loading dock but atmosphere all the same, and never actually reached a table, we can't rate the food. We went in every 30 mins to enquire. Tables that had been there over 4 hours were loitering and "having such a good time, we don't want to ask them to leave." Are they mad or don't they want to make money? Never again !!?! <br/>Do not make the mistake we did and next time, believe the reviews !!?!
Ann Young
Took my work group for lunch at Mexico......what a disappointment!! The meat &amp; seafood were tough as old boots, and the quesadillas were very bland. The service was shocking, with waitresses dropping stuff all around us and trying to give us dishes that we hadn't ordered. Complained to manager and got a couple of dishes taken off the bill, but definitely won't be going back there and would not recommend this place to anyone.
Bridget
Great service, great atmoshpere..... dreadful food! It ranged from completely tasteless (the home-made torilla chips and tomato salsa), to a bizarre mix of flavours in other dishes (the blend of ingredients in the chicken tacos just did not work for me!). Don't even get me started on the 'shredded chicken' that was in the tacos and quesadillas, I wouldn't have fed it to a dog!!! I actually had to question if it WAS chicken, it tasted so rough! All in all a very dissapointing meal. That said, the place was packed, so they must be doing something right, but I definately would never eat there again!
Brad Ambury
Our first visit to Mexico, despite having hesitations based on reviews we decided to give it a go. In a nutshell - arrived at 7pm, was told a table would be available "in about 1/2 hour" waited for 1 3/4 hours at a nearby bar and still heard nothing. Decided to walk in and confront them about it - they didn't seem to care one bit about the wait... We were seated about 15 minutes later at 9pm. We ordered at 9:15pm and recieved our average and very small meals at 10pm??!! 3 Hours from arriving to getting food on our table?? Really?? I don't care how "hip and happening" this place is meant to be.... If for one will avoid it like the plague!" Ridiculous wait, crap service and mediocre food.
Chris Baldock
Stopped by with a couple of mates on a wet and windy Saturday arvo. The warm bustling interior offered a welcome respite from the June weather and a place to eat after a few pints at a nearby pub.<br/><br/>The food is cheap and generally pretty good. The $6 tacos are excellent in their simplicity. The cerviche we tried was fresh and authentic. The fried chicken, which we regretted not trying, looked awesome. <br/><br/>The margarita jug was disappointing though. If there was actually any tequila in there, we sure couldn't taste that distinctive earthy flavour. This was a bit of a let down given the price and the high quality of the food.<br/><br/>I can see what the other reviewers mean about the service. The staff are all nice to look at but somewhat indifferent to the basics of good service. Then again, I guess that's what you get when the majority of your wait staff were born after 1994.
Louise Bartlett
Quirky place to come with mates for a catch-up over a wine &amp; tapas style dining.<br/><br/>Food was tasty &amp; delivered quickly on a busy thursday night. Opted for the chicken quesadillas, which came with awesome homemade chunky guacamole. <br/><br/>The decor is kooky but interesting! A welcome addition to Britomart's ever evolving bar &amp; restaurant scene. Thumbs up!
Meg
Had a very average first experience and won't be hurrying back any time soon. Waited over an hour and a half for a table, after being told the wait would be around 45 minutes. When we inquired again about our table the front of house woman (who clearly couldn't care less about how long we had been waiting) told us she had no idea how long the wait would be, so we left as by that point it was after 9pm and we still had not had dinner. We were eventually rung at around 9.15 over 2 hours after we had arrived at Mexico. They need to sort this out - never have I had to wait so long for a meal.
Sally
The food is great! The service is awful.<br/>It's tasty and moreish! The drinks are refreshing and a great accompaniment.<br/><br/>We waited an hour for a table which was no problem for us at all. We were phoned promptly when an hour was up and came back to the restaurant for our waiting table.<br/><br/>However, after having been open for almost 6 months you would think that the staff would be a bit more on to it. They were all incredibly rude and dismissive and I think I would have to pass up going here again unless the service got better.
Alice Pan
After hearing much hyped reviews about this place I wanted to check it out for myself... And it didn't disappoint. <br/><br/>This was my second attempt at going for my first mission was aborted due to a 1.5 hour wait. Even on a Sunday night Mexico is buzzing with people, probably accentuated by the crammed, almost claustrophobic space. But it's all part of the ambience. Oh and the food isn't bad either! <br/><br/>Great place to share a meal with friends. I'll definitely be going back.
Celia Schollum
I have been to Mexico twice now and the first time there were a few hiccups but the second time was amazing! We had a big group and managed to get a table (they do take bookings for 10-16 people but you have to get the set menu). The set menu at $30 was a bargain as there was SO much food! We also got to sample all the favourites (ceviche, fried chicken, soft tacos) without having to make any decisions. The food was fantastic, service was great, with a very cool atmosphere. I'm an avid Mexican fan and this is now my favourite Mexican restaurant in Auckland. Would definitely recommend for a good value, fun night out.
Ruby MacAvoy
Mexico is a breath of fresh air in the Auckland City restaurant scene.<br/><br/>The place is fun, it's loud, it's squishy... chances are, you will be at a table with other guests, but that's all part of its charm and the atmosphere that it is so loved for. The walls are a tribute to all things Mexican, crammed with photos, postcards, masks (the masks are a little creepy) and fantastic art… even the ladies bathroom is like walking into a shrine for Frida Khalo.<br/><br/>The food is not your typical ‘Americanised Mexican’, instead of an abundance of cheese and sour cream, the menu revolves around jalapenos, lime and coriander. And it’s oh so cheap! There aren’t many places in town where you can feel (a little too) full after an $11 meal.<br/><br/>It amazes me that Mexico can have such a terrible rating on this website and yet every time I go, the place is packed with people who adore it.<br/><br/>Make sure you go in there with an open mind, chances are you will have to wait for a table… but it’ll be worth the wait!
Louise
This place is fantastic! <br/>BUT - go with the following in mind:<br/>Because it’s so popular you need to get there either early (ie 6pm) or later (ie 8pm onwards) if you don’t want to wait in a queue (and yes this is weekdays too).<br/>I’ve done my fair share of travelling to the US and Mexico - this is authentic Mexican. <br/>It’s very good food, reasonably priced, very tasty, the place is busy and the atmosphere is manic – just like Mexico.<br/>This place is my favourite Mexican in Auckland city! It's a refreshing addition to the city's restaurant scene.<br/>Go with the right expectations and you won’t be disappointed!
Phill Dagger
This place is a joke!<br/><br/>Went with my wife last night and joined their waiting list for a table. The two young girls on the front desk had a very severe case of "superiority concept" - you're waitresses at a Mexican cafe ladies not Hollywood A-Listers!<br/><br/>I asked them for an indication of how long the table would be (it was 6.45) and they said 45 minutes to an hour. We went to get a drink at a bararound the corner and we waited. And waited. And waited. After over two hours we went back and couldn't get any sort of help so we jumped in a cab and went to Mission Bay instead. It's now Sunday and they still haven't texted me to say my table's ready.....they may be busy now, but once word spreads about the crap service, snotty attitude and total lack of professionalism I suspect they'll start to look at this sort of feedback more seriously. Woeful. Don't go there.
Alice Dalton
After waiting for a table from 5.45pm to 9.30pm we left and went somewhere else. We would have hoped to have some kind of time indication after an hour.<br/><br/>Great Sangria though, and from what I could see it would have been a good atmosphere had we been able to go.
Claire
The 3 front of house staff were extremely rude and arrogant. They seemed more interested in gossiping about their hair then doing their job of welcoming and seating customers. I had earlier spoken on the phone to a lovely woman who assured us she would at least try and accommodate our table of 7 (as you cannot book) when I explained this to the front of house girls they couldn't have cared less, were not helpful and actually decided to stop talking to us and continued gossiping. I would NEVER recommend coming here until they reassess their staffing situation. Total disappointment
Kate
Myself and a few co-workers went to Mexico for what we expected to be a trendy and authentic Mexican restaurant/bar... lets just say we won't be rushing back there ! From the outside this place looks like it has potential to be an entertaining place to eat and enjoy the music, colourful decor and traditional cuisine, inside we found it was cramped, very hot, minimum seating, dirty and way too loud! the staff were veerryy slow and unorganised, the food was cheap in price and taste! The thing that shocked me was the bathrooms, if your in a restaurant you'd expect there to be toilet paper and things to be clean...you might wanna go before you get there! And last of all the glasses, whether you ordered a wine ( if you can call cask wine wine) or a Margarita everything came in a medium size water glass, which i thought was cheap and dull. The only positive thing i can say is i liked the deep fried banana pastry with maple syrup, but i could make that at home!<br/><br/>I rate this restaurant 2/5 stars
Jenny
Love it! Fabulous.<br/>Have been 5 times now and enjoyed every experience.<br/>The staff are great and the twiggy blonde maitre dee is always a charm and we walk out laughing.<br/>Decor is awe inspiring and the place is always a hive of activity.<br/>I do come back more for the experience rather than the food itself, although the food is fair for the price it's very inconsistent. One day the 'not to miss' fried chicken is black the next it's orange?<br/>Totally worth checking out, a nice addition to to the city and a cheap night out!
M
Rude staff and a 3 hour wait for a table (no bookings allowed) mean we won't be returning in a hurry. Empty tables all over the restaurant but somehow they were all reserved for large parties (that never arrived!). They kept stringing us along saying there was less than an hour to wait.. isn't this just to keep us buying overpriced drinks in their bar? The woman at the door was arrogant and rude and didn't seem to know her job.
Carlene O'Meagher
True, nothing is over $14 but the servings are very small. Ordered 2 x $6 soft tacos and pretty quickly needed to order a third. Food was fine - what can you say about a small taco? Very busy when we came at lunch time but the service was great - very friendly and efficient, didn't feel rushed at all. Didn't order anything else so can't comment on drinks or prices. Nice decor, good lunchtime vibe. 3 stars is about right.
Hugh Lloyd
The concept is good- having been twice, I would say that go when it is a little less busy as the food and service are better. Definitely different and the food is enjoyable
Andy Chon
I have been to "Mexico" every week since it opened. This is banging fresh Mexican street food and is about as far away from Tex Mex as one can possible get. The fish taco's are a highlight - although you need to order more than one...<br/><br/>"Mexico" has great food, and great ambiance. The only downside is that regulars might get tired of limited menu unless they expand with specials, or change it up. Also, no bookings means it can be tough to eat when you want, and there really isn't any space to sit and wait for a table with a beer.
GAry Hill
So it's always difficult to find a true Mexican restaurant. And this one is no different. If you want mediocre TexMex at a slightly inflated price. Here it is.<br/>The service is polished like a McDonalds (would you want Margarita with that sir)<br/>the food is cheap and tacky.<br/>You may as well go to a burger king.<br/>The alcohol is watered down and the meat is non-existent.<br/>Scores 2 out of 10
Bob
We went along on night number 2. Considering this the service was pretty good, 4/5. They didnt know what was going on, but they pulled it off very well!<br/>Food; We chose 2 salads and 2 tacos. We probably needed 1 one item between the 2 of us. Prawn salad with chipotle mayo, tasty but mayo needed to be a bit warmer. <br/>The market fish ceviche was ok, the fish was very fresh, but the meal seamed to be a little 2 dimensional, lacked depth. It had the spicy warmth that was missing from the mayo, but it was more of a whack of spice than integrated. <br/>Tacos are well priced and tasty. I dont have any problem with pineapple in a cooked meal, but my partner does. Still the pulled pork was good. Chicken good, but taste inconsistent through the taco.<br/>The foods cheap, but not matched by the price of beers and tequila. Not too bad though.<br/><br/>Probably the only real negative was the crammed seating, forcing staff to negotiate their way around with much back tracking to let people past. This was mostly a problem at the choke point between the bar and till. <br/><br/>A fun place with well priced food and great service. Interesting decor.<br/>Giving it 4 stars, as it will improve,
Onkar
Great Mexican food! <br/><br/>Been there about 12 times in the past 3 months. Their soft shell tacos are amazing! Quick and easy to grab and then go if you're busy. Plus they have a taco loyalty system. The more tacos you buy the faster you get your free one!<br/><br/>Their menu is seasonal of course and they do offer different daily specials. The atmosphere is quite dim so I wouldn't suggest having a business meeting there, more of a personal meeting area in my honest opinion. A good date spot!

Mexico is a favourite lunch spot during weekdays in the city - doors open at 12pm and the waiting list is usually full by 12.45pm so an early lunch break is recommended especially if it's a Friday. The fried chicken is by far the best thing on the menu! The tacos aren't as good as the previous menu however the lamb quesedilla is a great accompaniment for the fried chicken & a carafe of Sangria Tinto to share. Great atmosphere & service! Highly recommended!
Nick
Wait times can be long and the drinks aren't strong enough!
Michael Humphries
Was lucky enough to get a seat right away, even though we were told at first there may be about a 45min wait. The waiters were very attentive and helpful and the food was pretty good. The type of place where you choose a number of plates to share at the table. Would go again if I could get a seat as quick next time. Price wise a little on the expensive side for the size of the dishes

I first went to Mexico when it opened; can that really be over two years ago? I have often walked past Mexico quite late and it seemed to maintain a great vibe with real Mexican decor and flickering candles; not the usual cheesy version of Tex-Mex. So, on a rare night with a friend who's about to become a Dad and therefore less available for 'social gatherings' we went for dinner. The 'Day of the dead' theme seemed to chime with the change in his staus! It was crammed to capacity but room was made for us by charming staff. We shared the cumin rubbed prawn quesadillas, a bland pumpkin dip special, popcorn chicken and beef tacos. The highlight was the watermelon, pepita and queso fresco salad - similar to Maldita's but more finely chopped. With a couple (three actually - but very modest...) of carafes of Margarita a - total under $100. Not cheap but OK for CBD. The atmosphere was brilliant, if loud and we thought the food and service were both very good, yet casual. The cool vibe is not first date territory but great for mates. Great to know it's around the corner from me; I'll be back again and again.

The restaurant is actually bigger than it looks from the outside, it was small because it was crowded, but the actual space spilled into the back. You immediately feel the Mexican party atmosphere in here, it's loud, colourful and vivacious. The staff are great here, they make you feel relaxed and comfortable and get quite a few laughs in between. It’s well priced for the food, the drinks would be the ones to burn the hole in your wallet after a while.<br/><br/>I'm not so much of a fan of the food here, I had the Fish Taco and found the mayo too creamy without any spicy kick whatsoever. This taco needed some zing, some sass, something to boost it up from the tame, un-Mexican-like flavour. Fried Chicken is well crumbed and crispy. It's a popular amongst students but I suspect intoxication may have influenced their taste buds a bit. I think this place is more specialised in the drinks than food. All the drinks I've had so far have made it into my "favourites" list- such as Tinto Sangria, Blanco Sangria, and the Virgin Margarita. They are a must try! Will rate 4 for the customer service and the drinks :)

Mexico does a number of things right, making it one of the best restaurants in Auckland – the staff is jovial, the food is inspired, the ambience is lively and the price is just about right (about $25 per person). Naturally, the restaurant is invariably busy.<br/><br/>This is the part where I complain about their no reservation policy. Mexico is usually full from Thursday-Saturday nights. It would be really convenient if they allowed reservations by phone, but instead you have to deal with a wait at the door. The wait is “estimated” to be 30 minutes, but at times I have had to wait close to an hour. Often, I end up wandering around town while waiting and dining somewhere else.<br/><br/>Let’s talk about the food. It is excellent. Don’t expect a typical burrito - this is Tex-Mex, not a traditional Mexican joint. The famous fried chicken, the beef taco and the chicken quesadilla are just some of the delicious offerings. I would suggest ordering a taco and a special each, with a quesadilla to share. My favourite specials here would be the ceviche and the coffee-soaked (!!) pork ribs. The fish was very tender, with that typical sour ceviche taste. My adventurous nature paid off with the pork ribs - they were bittersweet goodness. If you like Sangria, do not miss the Blanco.<br/><br/>At Mexico, you can enjoy some excellent Tex-Mex cuisine, but you'll have to wait some.

Mexico is a fiesta for both your taste buds and your eyes. The waitresses wear floral headdresses reminiscent of Lana del Rey and the walls are a decoupage homage to Frida Kahlo and the Day of the Dead. Forget that sour cream or grated cheddar has ever been associated with the word 'Mexican' as you're treated to blackened duck tacos with mango and tamarind agua, or caramelised lamb gorditas. Okay, so it's no more Mexican than Tex-Mex is, but at least it's a more gourmet step in the right direction. The menu changes regularly and their ever-changing specials board will mean no two visits are the same. Enjoy a margarita or two with your meal (but avoid the sangria blanco at all costs; it's kinda blando) or the virgin margarita, which is a delicious alternative to sober drivers and the tequila-averse. <br/><br/>They don't do bookings here so if you're not keen on getting sloshed while waiting in the bar next door, it pays to visit early (around 6ish). For a restaurant where the number of drinks outnumber the number of things to eat, the restaurant is very kid-friendly and the wee ones are a common sight in the early evening. <br/><br/>On my most recent visit I tried two kinds of soft tacos ($6) the aforementioned blackened duck and one from the specials board that consisted of beef tongue. The latter was rich, meltingly tender tongue (which really has the consistency of something like beef cheeks if that's an anatomy you're less averse to) and comforting. The fried chicken is a menu stalwart at Mexico. Just try it.

Don’t let the long wait for a table put you off, Mexico is a great restaurant. I don’t think I have ever waited less than an hour for a table for dinner (usually around half an hour at lunch time) but I can understand why. The food is fabulous, the service friendly and fast and the prices are low, everything you want in a dining experience. The restaurant itself is dark, the tables are close together and it can get a bit noisy, so it’s probably not the best place to take your grandparents or those hard of hearing, but I feel it adds to the atmosphere of the restaurant which is fun and lively. The menu is made up of lots of small plates which are great for sharing. My favourites are the pork cheek taco, mushroom quesadilla and of the course the famous fried chicken. As expected, they have a large range of tequila and Mexican beer as well as tasty Margaritas and Sangria. I haven’t been to any of the other locations but I am excited that they are opening a restaurant in Ellerslie soon, which I will have to check out.
