Review Galbraith's Alehouse - Auckland Central

I really like this place, but tonight they let me down. Great place and great beer, but having reserved a table to eat before a concert I would have hoped to get the simple food I ordered, before my reservation time, only to not get to eat 1 hour 20 minutes later when we had to leave to see the concert. This is unacceptable to take a reservation and a simple food order and not then indicate that they couldn't deliver on the food. I needed to eat before the concert but they failed me badly. I did get a refund but I really needed to eat! If I was told it was too busy to get food I would have gone elsewhere to eat and happily enjoyed a pint here but they left me and others waiting for simple orders that they couldn't deliver. In like this pub, but be upfront about how busy you are and let your patrons know the truth, we'll respect you more for it!

A real find if you're in to beer ! Proper traditional brew pub brewing real cask ales ! Met the brewer Teddy who was really friendly as were all the staff.

They have a nice garden area. It would be nice to come back there in summer. Lots of beer selections as well. Recommendedđź‘Ť

Seriously great pub. Fantastic in house brewed beers and a perfect steak.

Our favourite local! Amazing beers, food and service! Plus, last night I left my handbag there accidentally and the staff member there (Ali) was so wonderful about it. She totally made my day by keeping it safe and being so empathetic! Could not recommend this place enough!

Had a really good meal here, plenty of choices on the menu, came out in a reasonable time frame, service was friendly and very good

Nice, spacious traditional pub. Great place for traditional English ale. Quality of food fluctuates significantly, but you won't go hungry.

Nice place to stop by for a pint or two and grabbing a few food items. They have beers they brew themselves as well as guest taps which rotate. Order food and drinks at the bar and find a free table. They do have a few parking spots in the carpark next door, just make sure to get a ticket from the bar if you find a spot. The place is fairly big with an outdoor area. It does get quite loud though especially if it's full. The food is quite nice but a bit on the pricy side. The triple fried chips are the usual go to.

Great choice of House Ales and Beers. Amazing place with classic vintage feel and ambience. Outdoor seating area is awesome + Inside seating is great too. Great food, nibbles and drinks. Must visit.

I have to give this place 5* as food, service and beer were all fabulous plus there’s free parking. A little on the $$+ side for us but excellent. So many British style bitter beers to choose from is like to stay for a week! 🍺🥴

Caught the AB's vs Ireland 1/4 final Sunday morning. Awesome venue to experience the tension and relief of NZ staying in the World Cup! Well looked after by the staff throughout the game.

The fish and chips looked amazing I had the vegetarian burger which was great but I'm afraid the beer has been left behind in the last decade or so. It reminds me of the the Shakespeare tavern in that regard.I had the Munich Lager and Stout. These were OK but just not competing in the local Garage Project or Behemoth league.

Galbraiths is a great pub. The beer is delicious (especially the Bellringer!) and the food is really good value. It’s great to sit outside in the beer garden with our dog on sunny days, or enjoy the indoors fire in Winter.

We just had one of the best dining experiences ever at Galbraith’s Alehouse! We booked in for a table of 15 for a birthday and the staff were incredibly accomodating, flexible and kind with this request. On the night, the team at Galbraith’s were just so phenomenal and welcoming. They kindly took care of everyone and made our night smooth, stress-free and memorable. From sorting the tab, bringing out the cake and clean up, the team were so helpful, enthusiastic and kind. The vibe at Galbraith’s was amazing, and although the place itself is so beautiful, the team here is definitely the key to its success. Thank you so much for your incredible hard work Saturday team (10/06)! Everyone was so happy and we can’t wait to visit you again soon!

Definitely on AKL's top 20 beer bars for a reason. Haven't been to a place that smelled so much like roasted malt in a long time, as they brew right here on their premises. Food gets QUITE expensive but the atmosphere is something to behold and take in, whether inside or out back in their beer garden.

Super friendly service person (is that what they're called now?). Food (chowder) was stellar the atmosphere was pubish without the dinginess which I know some people love.

Wrapped up saturday night with these delicious food at GALBREITH'S ALEHOUSE. Best pub with inhouse Brewhouse ,food freshly cooked n served . The ambience is pretty awesome with dim illuminated lights which gives a warm n cozy effect.
Must try the steak here , tried it with mushroom sauce and it was sooo tempting.

Galbraith's Alehouse is monument more than it's a beer bar. An in-house brewery, top of the class beers amd spirits, ambience that makes you want to hang out here and a building that looks like beauty from the outside. I wish I had more pictures but by the time I went here, it was already dark and I just had the Munich Lager. Next time I go however, I'll make it a point to ensure that I publish more pictures of this beautiful 'Alehouse'.

Saturday night. Excellent food, good staff, good atmosphere, good interesting range of beers . A really nice place - thank goodness a pub that doesn't play irritating mind numbing junk music, doesnt have screens everywhere blasting endless sports broadcasts in your face and you can actually talk with your friends without yelling. Highly recommended for a pleasant night out.

The only time I've ever found myself at Galbraiths is pre Powerstation gig, trying to get the last few pints down me before getting all moshy.

This Sunday night though, we were there to eat! How novel?
A friend had booked in for a B-Day Sunday night roast dinner. So even though Galbraiths offer more than just a beef roast on a Sunday night, it would've been rude to not order the roast ...

And I can tells ya' that no one left disappointed.
Beef Sirloin, cooked and carved beautifully, with triple cooked spuds, a combo of greens, horseradish cream, gravy and the crowning jewel, a yorkshire pud.

Hashtag homely.
Hashtag warming my cockles.
Hashtag Galbraiths, you're doing it right.

While you're there, ensure you get through a pint or two of the Urbanaut IPA, a great accompaniment to the roast.

A shout out also for my partners Beef Cheeks, melt in our mouth goodness but could do with beefing up of the portion size ('scuse the pun).

Just been for a quick dinner with my roommates at this gorgeous place in Eden Terrace.
It looks amazing from outside and inside as well.

No tables service but it was expected, you order at the counter and you get your number.
Large selection of craft beers and nice wine!
The cocktails on the other hand are terrible. At least the lemon lime and bitters with vodka we had literally tasted like lollipop. I presented it back at the counter asking for it to be replaced with a vodka and soda, they charged me for both.
I am a duty manager , I would never charge for a not enjoyed and returned basically untouched drink.

The food was ok, the steak looked great. My bangers and mash was tasty but the sausages were very dry.
The tapas were ok, not too much taste.
Prices are good.
Would have been nice if we had water available at all times.

Overall the experience wasn’t that enjoyable.

Ambience 4/5
Service 2/5
Food 2.5/5

Decent pub food with a good selection of craft beers. Plenty of parking in the evenings at least and friendly staff. Been here a couple of times and it’s quite noisy even when half full, which is ok for a pub, but maybe they could look at some sound absorbing baffles or something

Love this place! Its all about beers for me. And you would think that since its an Alehouse the food will be ignored. But thats now the case at all.
They have good variety of fries (I always go for skinny fries). Fish and Chips are awesome (but you cant really go wron with them). They also have specials that change every day Soups, Salads, etc.
Pretty cool place!

Great food, have tried the bangers and mash (the gravy is amazing!) along with the pork sliders and polenta chips. Friends have also had the fish and chips plus the tomato soup. The portions are quite large if you are not that hungry. Service is also quite fast. The furniture could do with a bit of a refresh.

We had a disappointing visit for dinner last night
5 of us went
The food and the service were good
Bangers & Mash for me
Nothing special whatsoever
Beers are crafty but that is OK
The real downers were the heat
No AC and it was like a sauna in there
But the worst was the noise
It was very busy but the noise was intolerable
Grown men were screaming like banshees
Amazing and somewhat disturbing

Galbraith's has amazing beer, but I'd rather have it elsewhere where the ambience is better (eg Whammy Bar) or anywhere where I could get their awesome IPA with a better burger.

Been there more than once and food was just average. My burger was overcooked and fries soggy. Service was ok.
Ekaterina Vincent
Had the lunch special (fish and chips) there a couple of weeks ago. The portion was half size of normal, so what kind of special is this?? They might as well call it "half size" rather then "special". Was quite annoyed (hangry!). The servise wasn't great, although the staff was very friendly.

The last time I stepped foot in this building, it was Grafton Library. Fast forward to 2017, on a very cold night, I walk into a lovely & warm old fashioned pub. The staff are really friendly. Great selection of beers. The burger & fries were really nice. I won't leave my return trip so long next time. I'll be back.

Me and a group attended the other day for lunch while my Father was over from Perth, He absolutely loved the old style pub. We all ordered the fish and chips, my dad enjoyed trying their different beers. I found the each chip to be the size of a quarter of a potato and the fish had no taste to it.... I would take my dad back there again and maybe head in to try their beers.

Not a bad old, very old style pub (these are rear).

Had the fish n chups, squid and lamb won ton. All the food was pretty good, tasty and well presented.

Good place to try for a work lunch.

This place is awesome, the outside area is really cool, the wine is good and their fish and chip is really worth its price - loved it! The inside seemed really hot on a sunny evening though

Great atmosphere. Went in to watch the rugby so I had a lentil soup for entree with bangers and mash and a glass of Merlot for mains. For dessert i had the apple crumble which wasnt special. It all mooshed in nicely though which was great watching the boys in black thrash the Australians on TV.

This is one of the Anytime Go-To places for me, drinks and food menu, both have lots of options. To top it off, food tastes really good as well.

One of my favourite breweries in Auckland. Weekend night it just has the perfect vibe. Fresh, wide range of craft beers to choose from. Local, imported, made on the property. Have a great selection of other spirits as well. I have 2-3 different beers in one night just to try all the fresh brews. Love their bar-menus, omg they have the chunkiest fries, good burgers and have tried the fettuccine too. Have had some amazing random conversation here as it gets packed so your end up sharing tables. Look forward to many more fun nights and try more from your food menu (looks so good). Needless to mention bartender never fails to talk about the beers before he fills a glass and service is good too. I only wish their beer was less pricey. All good craft is between $10-12.

We visited this establishment to try out their Sunday roast Beef & was really disappointed with what was served up. the beef was bordering on Steak thickness, & was on the tough side, & the carrots were virtually raw.
Traditional roast beef should be thinly sliced, not chunks like we received.
Could not fault the beer. All clearly labeled so you knew what was available as it was well described.
MrGodHimself
Brilliant beer selection in a lovely old building! There are always several freshly brewed beers on tap. A large selection of bottled beer too, although the bottled beers can be a little overpriced compared to ordering them online or finding them at a bottle shop, but that seems typical of many venues.

If you love beer you will love Galbraith's. These guys have been around for as long as I can remember; before craft beer had exploded and was everywhere they were already serving up fantastic and unique beer, some of it brewed on premises (you can see the tanks as you walk in).

The food is above average for 'pub food' too. They try and be creative; sometimes it's a miss, but usually it's excellent. My only wish is that they bring back the Crispy Pork belly on Green Pea Risotto that they had a few years back! That was one of my favourite meals of all time (If it ever comes back could someone please message/comment me!).

Galbraith's is a great location for beer, food and conversation; without the overpowering loud music so prevalent at other venues these days.

Highly recommended for anyone who loves beer, or food for that matter.

Called in here on Saturday 17 May 2014, had a Rubik - Russiian Imperial Stout $10.50 pint, yummy - nice choice for a cool autumn day by the outdoor fire - not busy so no waiting for service.

Cool looking pub, with great atmosphere and unique beers. It still has that laid back vibe that makes you feel a bit like you've just stopped in small town New Zealand for a cheeky pint at the local pub. Fuse that with the funky beer selection (brewed in-house) and good range of decent pub food and you get an excellent place to come with friends and socialise over some interesting beersies.

Was super busy, hard to find a table, good range of beers available. Disappointed with the food, quite expensive and the burger was very underwhelming, with a few chips thrown on the plate as an after thought. Might just be coz it was so busy but wouldn't go back. Nice place for a drink but food lets them down.

Not many places are as comforting as Galbraith's. It's a place where you can go any day of the week any mood you are in. It doesn't matter if it's pouring down or bright and sunny. This place will comfort your soul. Food is good honest pub style deliciousness and the beer flows like nectar of the gods. My favourite, triple cooked chips, bangers and mash, onion rings and beer.

I’d love to describe the interior to you. I’d love to tell you about the comfortable chairs and beautifully spaced tables, the gentlemanly decor and the deep music that drew you in but all I could see and hear was an ocean of people.

All week long I look forward to Friday lunch. That's the day we haul ass up to Galbraith's for beers and burgers. The food menu is short and sweet, focusing their efforts to deliver consistent satisfaction. The beer offering is an experience indeed. The guest beers board changes regularly and there's always something new and interesting to try. The G team are always friendly and knowledgeable. They do justice for craft beer brewers and guzzlers alike. Also a great atmosphere for real conversation - it's one of the very few places to go that doesn't smother your compadres' quips and chortles with blaring beats.

Saturday lunch with the kids - one hour after arriving on the worst flight from Wellington in memory. With mini tornadoes doing bad stuff outside, and having survived a near death experience, Galbraiths seemed the obvious choice.

Although the ale takes me back to England, the interior is definitely colonial, Victorian, maybe something out of Australia. High ceilings, dark green ceilings and walls, above warm rimu(?) panelling. It's cosy, established and today a lot better than sitting in an aircraft.

As you enter you'll see fermentation tanks for galbraiths own ales and to me it's one of these that should be the first order. Today I went for the Bellringer best bitter, Bob hudson's bitter and then Grafton porter ( I wasn't driving). Bellringer is a lovely, gentle malt but was surpassed by the Hudson, a gorgeously silky, perfect English ale. The porter was excellent but the Hudson was my pick.

Around the table a lambic framboise seemed to figure large, as well as a flat white beer - rich and well flavoured.

For food we ordered beef pies, sausage and mash, a hamburger, ribs and fries. Mine was the pie, a beef pot pie - ok pastry, well cooked, well flavoured stew but a little too heavy on the salt. The ribs went into a second order, the sausage and mash was great and the hamburger was said to be excellent.

Service brilliant - really lovely people - knowledgeable and went beyond the norm.

Galbraiths is a special part of the auckland beer scene - if you know beer, you'll know galbraiths.

Very highly recommended

This is a typical bar you wanna come on Saturday afternoon to have some drinks and grab some snacks. Nice food, big car parking, great vibe and good services.

We were craving a nice Sunday roast, but turned up too late- it was all gone boohoo! I think the trick is to turn up early, especially when lamb is on the menu.Still enjoyed our meals regardless. I had the beer battered fish with tripple cooked chips. Such a generous portion of fish. Two huge fish fillets, the fish was beautiful and the batter was delicious. The chips were very yummy. I loved the mushy peas, I just wish there was more! It was served with homemade tartare sauce which I enjoyed. My partner had the Butlers steak with Peppercorn&brandy sauce. The steak was cook perfectly and melted in your mouth. Unfortunately, it was served with skinny french fries and not the thick tripple cooked chips which was a shame. Would def return- next time earlier in the day for a roast!

I am not a reviewer - I could but I don't. I LOVE dining out and am constantly amazed at what chefs are able to create and the fantastical approach they have to their craft - day in and day out. This is part of the fun - the discovery of food - adventures to be had - so I am not going to spoil yours. Every review I write will start this way - followed by a few things I like about a place or maybe even who I am with or event I am attending and some photos!!!!! thats it!!

You really should make use of rainy day this way!! Taste the 'flights' ale (I think there is 14 or more to try) and enjoy. If you are vegetarian you will be eating your meal with the smallest food miles possible - check out the herb and vegetable patch out the back (chef took me on a guided tour!!)

If u want a nice hassle free meal with a nice beer on the side, try the fish and chips, fried jalepenos with any of the house tap beers- wont regret it. Definitely one of my favs at the mo

Great English style pub with awesome real ale. The food really compliments what's on offer in terms of beers brewed in house and also an extensive list of NZ and international options.

Came with a large group (reservation was made). Service wasn't particularly great, I don't think groups are encouraged. Viewing into the beer room is neat, and while the beer was great the price seems pretty high. We enjoyed the food platters, especially the extra large fries which were delicious and definitely a memorable novelty.

Anything you can ask for in a Brewery. Even a nice outdoor area (which is usually spoilt by nicotine smoke - meh).

Some great beers, but I expected more of the food, hence not a 5.
Marion
Great ale, delicious food, excellent staff & friends new to Galbraith's all commented on how good it was to be able to hold a conversation without getting GBH of the ear holes being assaulted by unnecessary loud 70& 80's music, a grand public house.

Haven't been here for a while but thought we would give it another go after a good review in the newspaper. Little bit disappointed, nothing really grabbed any of us. The greens were oily and overdressed and really, skirt steak is for slow cooking, it was a bit chewy. The goat's cheese salad, although generous in portion of salad was a bit lacking in the actual goat's cheese (4 pieces). Galbraith's is a lovely old pub with a nice atmosphere but if we visit again it won't be because of the food.

I visited on a miserably, cold and wet June Sunday afternoon. Really lovely Sunday roast - beef with all the trimmings (great Yorkshire pudding) and at just under $20 not bad value, but the portion is not big but a good portion size for a lunch. The food is always beautifully presented. I haven't eaten anything here in a long time but in the past I have found it all good.

I find the drinks too expensive, I know it's a specialised brew bar but the other drinks such as wine, cider and juice are over-priced. They don't have an espresso machine so it's $4.50 for a filter coffee, to be fair lovely coffee but not worthy of latte prices! I highly recommend the Sunday roast and the beer.
Karen
I was really looking forward to twice cooked pork belly as it is my favourite. I was bitterly disappointed. It was the worst pork belly I have ever had. It lacked flavour and 4 or 5 inch square pieces of meat meant the meal was incredibly stingy too. It was served of a goopy pea and mint risotto that was just as disappointing. This was the first and last time I had a meal at Galbraith's. There are much better options available for the same or better price :(

We visit Galbraith's far, far too often, which is in no way a bad thing. Great outside seating when the sun is out, and a cozy outdoor fireplace when the sun goes down. The huge fire inside is lovely too if you're lucky to get the table in front of it.
As for pub food, there's nothing out there that can beat Galbraith's. The switch from mcdonalds-esque fries to the new straw fries was the best move ever, too. Menu is constantly being updated and I just love that often the specials and fish of the day will include the delicious offerings from their very own garden.
Price points are extremely fair, but let's be honest, it's the beer we come for and Galbraith's does not disappoint. A true gem on the city fringe, we just can't stay away.
Bonsai
A great, old-fashioned pub. The Munich lager is very nice indeed, and the new cheese souffle utterly, utterly divine. I was very disappointed when they took the goat's cheese souffle off the menu, so the reinstatement of a puffy, eggy, cheesy option for us ovo-lacto vegetarians is much appreciated! As is the new option to have chips cooked in canola oil (beef dripping having previously been the only choice). Oh, and I nearly forgot the garlic bread - a whole loaf just soaking in garlicky butter. So. Good!
Peter P
A fantastic brew pub. They have a fantastic range of beers, not only their own English-style ales, but beers from many of the country's best craft breweries. Have only eaten here once and it was sensational! Top notch gastropub nosh. Full marks.
Anthony
Love it. My wife worked her way through a beer tasting tray (always a good option), but as we visited during Oktoberfest I couldn't resist steins of Munich Lager.

Great beer and sumptuous food - the Welsh rarebit I had was my favourite meal of the year.
Corinne Gibson
Spent a long Sunday afternoon here - the welsh rarebit was honestly the best meal I've had all year. Just stunning food, beer and service. Highly recommended.
Missy Davidson
My favourite pub. And the food, although possibly a bit more pricy than your average pub meal, is consistently wonderful. I think I've nearly worked my through the entire menu! Definitely worth its rating of Best Auckland Pub.

Went here for one of my boyfriend's work-dos and although the Beer was great (we got one of the little platter things and thoroughly enjoyed it!) the food and service really weren't the best.

My boyfriend is not the fussiest eater and will eat pretty much anything you put in front of him, but even he couldn't stomach finishing the food. I had fish and chips, which was ok - nothing special, and he had a steak that was very overcooked and tough.

The service was probably the most worrying part about it. I understand that there were a lot of us (3 long tables worth!), but still they seemed to neglect the table we were at and didn't even start taking our orders til about an hour after they'd taken everyone's at the other 2 tables. Not even kidding - the other tables were getting their main courses, before we'd even had the chance to order. It was SO bad!

Honestly it's put us off ever going back, even though the beer was good. The rating is pretty much for the beer alone, hahaha.
