Review Mission Bay Cafe - Auckland Central

Michelle
Great food and service. Combo, entrée and main or main and dessert for $49. They are accommodating too. I usually ask to swap my mash for roast potatoes, and they are always willing to say yes to my request. Highly recommend.

Very nice food and really nice staff, however, when you're inside, there's very little space to move around so if you can sit outside 😀
Rick Shen
Very close to the beach and there's parking lot just nearby. The coffee is really good, strong and creamy.

Update: 25/12/2022-I could clearly see a distinctive improvement from my last review. However, there should definitely be more vegan and vegetarian options available. I was actually surprised they don't have something as basic as kumra fries. Also, surcharge on paywave and credit card transactions is something I've never been a fan of. There can be more done in terms of improving the overall experience. Overall presentation, wait time, customer service etc. can improve. Prices are okayish for the location.

Decent lil cafe for breakfast or lunch. Food is good, service can be slow and staff friendliness varies. Limited indoor and outdoor seating. Ok for a quick stop.

I usually come here with my hubby for afternoon tea but this time with my family - husband, my son's family, his wife and two children for breakfast, we called in for reservation for 7 pax and.our meals..wallah, when we arrived we were so pleased. Everything is prepared, food so delicious at a reasonable price and portion. So love the place, highly recommended. Staff most of all friendly and helpful. See you soon.

Nice cafe by the beach for a lazy Saturday morning brunch. The staff were friendly and the breakfast menu was good. Delicious food and great coffee. Try their Mocha, best one had so far! Not much food option in vegetarian or chicken... most of the breakfast menu had bacon in it. You can customize the order to exclude bacon.
Gerry
Great location with good service. All day menu. Very busy place put still relaxed. Options of inside/outside, sofa/chair/stool seating. Menu is limited but excellent quality. I didn't try the coffee so I couldn't advise you.

On a wet and 🥶 cold day i googled searched a good rating and review cafe for a morning breakfast meal Mission bay Cafe was reccomended Parking was good out on the main street . I decided to sit out side as there were table seating available. Heaters were in the ceilings and also stand up heaters which created a nice warm feeling and having the outdoor atmosphere 😀. I was greeted with a welcome from the staff 😀 and ordered a decaf mocha and poached eggs (free range) on toast Also MBC grill (check out photo's) Nicely presented and delicious 😋 Enjoyed the breakfast staff polite and patient as I was searching the menu on what to order. Coming back again

Loved the view, delicious food and top it off with an amazingly kind & wonderful staff. The view of mission bay beach and Rangitoto Island is just breath taking. We loved the chocolate mud dessert with vanilla ice cream. The combination of great view, delicious food and wonderful staff, the cafe does deserve 7 stars. We will come again and friends with us.

We have been going to this cafe for years and the place is just incredible. Love everything about here. Great location and stunning views. Excellent service and awesome food. Even the kids menu is so awesome. Great presentation and decent quantity. Good seating indoor and outdoor. Love this cafe completely.

Good cafe, plenty of shade and dogs can sit out like Layla in this post 😊. Friendly staff. Good service. Good food. Vibrant atmosphere plus opportunity to visit other restaurants, cafe, ice-cream shop, Mission Bay beach etc. Can't go wrong here.

A wonderful dine in experience with our amazing hostess Lila who was absolutely welcoming! The dishes were just perfect! Definitely recommend when you're in Mission Bay.
Rubaiya Kotha
Talking about the foods and drinks there, they were equally delicious and appetizing, especially, the Orange cake and the garlic-roasted bread were outstanding. I liked Mission Bay café, mainly because it had a huge space inside it to accommodate just about everybody rather comfortably. Staffs are very friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend.
Foodaficionado
Had coffee here on a trip to the beach and the service was very fast and efficient. The coffee was very smooth and perfectly made as well. Would be my go to place from now on here. The only downside was that I had to wait outside since I ordered takeaway and it was super cold that day. So would probably order in advance and head out to just pick it up.

Excellent service, great food. I had mixed grill, loved the bread and chutney. Daughter had the buttermilk pancakes, she said they are the best she has had. Got take home desserts as meal was filling. Dessert were beautiful. Lime cheesecake was delicious.

Amazing service, friendly staff, wholesome hearty food obviously cooked with care and passion. Great on the wallet and stomach

The service we received at Mission Bay Cafe was absolutely fantastic. The staff are friendly and professional, and I thought it worth mentioning in a review.

Thank you all.

Third rate cafe. Served cold tasteless second hand meal and whats worse got a feeble excuse about it as though it was my problem. Unacceptable Have eaten there in past but definitely wont be back. There are lots of excellent cafes around now. Pass this one by.

This cafe has been around for decades.

Good ambience however the furniture and settings are pretty distressed.

Ordered the MBC Grill for brunch. Food came with a decent portion. The Their chicken waffle was divine, the fried chicken was crispy and tender, excellently flavored, the savory flavors matched well with the maple syrup.

The ice mocha was nice, the beetroot latte was nice but could have used lesser grains. The cappuccino was nice.

Excellent presentation on both the food and drinks.

Definitely revisit and highly recommended to everyone.

Food: 10/10
Food presentation: 10/10
Service: 9/10
Location: 8.5/10
Ambience: 8/10
Price $25 per person
Carl
Horrible taste and rude staff
Natiella
Exceptional service and good to match! We took up the offer of $39 for entree and main or dessert and main. We got the Duo of Lamb and Steak and both were absolutely amazing!
Leah Pereira
Really wanted to love the pasta dish because the aroma was amazing but the sauce was way too oily and watery which was a big let down. Iced coffee was great and the chips that came with the fish and chips were amazing! Great service overall but will probably stay away from the pasta next time.
Where To Next Auckland
Food: This is my go to place for weekend brunching! Their eggs bene with bacon is one of my favorites in the city. It's simple, but done so well. Their MBC Potato Hash Cake is also veryyy good. I've tried their cabinet cakes as well as most of their Brunch menu - and never had a bad meal here. I also recently tried their open steak sandwich - the steak was cooked to perfection and I would totally have it again in a heartbeat.

Service: We were greeted immediately and seated outside in a sunny spot with a perfect view. They were incredibly friendly, took our orders quickly and our food arrived in appropriate timings. It does get pretty busy here at the weekends, so it was a little hard to capture someones attention when we were after more drinks. But as soon as we did, they were super helpful! So overall the service was good.

Ambiance: It's in prime location along the mission bay waterfront. It's roadside so the cars can be a little noisy. But it has beautiful views, and has a great busy/bustling vibes without it being over crowded.

I love this place and will keep coming back most weekends... can't get enough of their eggs bene!

I have been to this cafe a couple of times. It opens early in the morning and closes late at night. Most time I would go there for dinner. And I always order the steak. The steak is tasty with reasonable price. What I wanna recommend is their dessert which tasted very yummy.

I usually avoid Mission Bay in general but when I go there I usually grab my coffee here. It's actually pretty good considering it's mass production given the amount of customers. I also tried the cabinet food and that was a disappointment, for both myself and my wife.
Hungry D
Been going here for over 3 years now. Great staff... great service. Always feel welcome.

Kid friendly too and nice range of meals on the menu. Great coffee.

One of my favorite and regular places over the years. Dinner dishes has always been great, haven't been disappointed yet after more than 10 years. Kudos to the chef. Coffee is excellent from my regular barista. I can see why it won the Supreme award!

First the good....The coffees were good and there were plenty customers. Service was ok and it is a great place right on the main stretch of mission bay. Now the not so good, I only had cakes from the cabinet as they looked so tempting. Had the ginger crunch and Lennon meringue pie. The ginger crunch lacked ginger but otherwise was ok. However the lemon meringue had a weird texture....As if it had been overdosed on gelatin to the point the filling was hard. Also didn't have any kind of lemon zing....literally and disappointingly the worst cake I've had in Auckland.
Erika Gualberto
We ordered fish and chips. It didnt disappoint at all, the batter was just perfect, not too crumby, just complemented the freshness of the fish.
Auckland Foodie
I enjoyed coming here for brunch. The eggs Benedict were nice and not too expensive and the service was quick and friendly. Definitely a nice cafe at a good location.

The service was pretty good, however it took a while to be served. I had the Creamy Mushrooms with Bacon (Extra $5.5 for bacon), it was quite nice however the sauce didn't really resemble a normal creamy mushroom sauce. I also had an iced chocolate which tasted as good as it looked. Overall it is a decent cafe which is not too pricey and provide pretty decent food.
Ziqi Feng
Services without smile which brings negative customer experience, and new menus that differ with the posted one which is confused. Hope they can update, otherwise they gonna lose customers.
Kristeen Mae
Ordered a flat white here the barista was obviously not in a good mood and was just in a rush. Took a sip of my coffee, the worst coffee ive tasted in my life the milk was burned half of the cup was just foam, so i went and return it, barista just said “all good” in a very dismissivr manner. Handed back a newly made coffee without saying a word and in a way as such as if its my fault to be returning a badly made and burned coffee in a first place. She must have woken up in the bad side of the bed as obviously she was quite snappy with her other co workers. We’ve all bad bad days but woman dont but dont pass it to your customer.
Simon Lee
Nice cafe right in the heart of Mission Bay so expect it to be relatively busy at peak hours. A bit more expensive than your normal cafe but food is consistently good but not mind blowing. Coffee I might add is also not bad but nothing special. If you grab breakfast, expect a $25-$30 per person.

Ambience 4/5
Food 4/5
Staff 4/5
Price 3/5
Possibly the best French toast I’ve had in Auckland, and I order French toast wherever I go for brunch. Service was excellent. Friendly and helpful staff who memorized three orders without writing it down, I thought that was incredible.
Martin Cribbin
Friendly service the chips hot and crunchy outside soft inner ,had eggs Benedict and salmon with extra mushrooms was excellent. Would recommend the orange Turkish cake as pudding very good
Hekylin
Had lunch there. Good steak sandwich but terrible fish and chips. Food grade also concerns me. It is A but expired on 2017 Aug which is last year.
Abimbola.ademola.4lyf
Very friendly staff. Quick and efficient service. Nice ambience. Tasty food. We had the seafood sautée and chicken ballotine. If you are mission bay, you should definitely eat here.
Jeff Mo
Very average food. Got a fish of the day and the mayo in the salad was too strong and the fish was over-seasoned. The icing on top was that they told me the fish if the day was 24$ and charged me $29 due to "price fluctuations". Terrible service
N Lam
Went here for brunch with some family. We were seated and given menus quick, which was great. Ordered coffee and drinks. When the waitress brought out our coffees she placed it down and pushed the cup making the coffee spill everywhere. She did not apologised or came back with a napkin to clean up the mess at all. Coffee wasnt that great but food was ok. First and last time coming here.
Sabah Smith
I had the big MBC grill (big breaky) and it was delicious! Food cooked to perfection, crispy bacon, perfectly runny poached eggs. The chorizo sausage was very spicy I could not finish it and I usually like spice. Had an iced coffee - that comes with ice cream!! What a treat. Staff not overly friendly and do make you feel like a bit of a burden, assume that’s because they are run off their feet. The food was good enough for me to go back though!
Ellynn
Had Christmas Eve brunch here with friends and I liked my experience. Servers were super nice and friendly. Food was good and filling. Price is average brunch price. They were nice enough to open the shade for us as well since it was scorching hot. Even though it was pretty busy, we were served well.
Olivia Zhai
I WAS REALLY DISAPPOINTED BY THE FOOD AND THE SERVICE!! I ordered pan fried snapper and prawn zucchini as a $35 deal combo. It took about 40 minuets to serve the food. When I ask the waitress she response”This is just how European eat.” 👐👐👐 And the snapper fish is too salty that took me 2L of water to digest. GOOD JOB AND WELL DONE WITH YOUR RACIST STAFF!!
Clove
Had a tasty hot chocolate and a hearty seafood chowder for a late afternoon lunch. Decent service and affordably priced vs. a few of the others on the tourist-y Mission Beach strip.
JPK
Mixed experience, good non-veg dishes well enjoyed.
Vegetarian dish was ok, Could be more crisp and savoury.
Will try them again.
Dessert was good.

We came for brunch with my family. It was a warm place, a nice view, friendly service , Great food. we did enjoyed it. We will come back again.
Phoenix Huege De Serville
The food was well presented and nice flavour ruined by staff and the outlandish wait for X1 meal.

Very rude staff member, x 4 of us ordered meals, my 3 male friends were served their orders, I received the side salad and waited 15 minutes for the rest of my meal which was to compliment my salad....1 of my friends asked for my meal and was told by the waiter it was coming.

We waited another 10 min then (I) asked where my meal was. I was told by the male waiter with dreads that my meal was on its way.... My response was.... "so you forgot my meal"? The waiter then defensively responded with "No we haven't forgotten and it is on its way" No apologies at all.

Another 5 minutes and I received my meal from another waiter, I explained to this waiter my male friends had almost finished their meals and we wanted to share our meals together and this waiter explained the kitchen could only handle 3 people's meals.

Our decision to choose this cafe to eat at and to share a meal in a gorgeous setting was ruined by this experience,

1. The inability of staff to explain to customers the kitchen restrictions before the meal was prepared and to ensure customers have a choice to proceed, leave or go with another choice.

2. Defensive argumentative attitude with excuses made by waiters who clearly had an issue with offering apology left a bad taste in the mouths of all those seated at our table.

3. Waiters served all 3 men at our table and made the 1 woman wait without explanation or offering alternatives leaving it to customers to manage the issue.

4. To add to this distasteful experience we all observed a really happy banter between staff who clearly enjoyed the joke of customers who annoyed them and spent a lot of time chatting to each other socialising rather than engaging with customers. I am guessing their enjoyment together was the most important experience for them leaving us as the secondary focus..... eg we even had to replace our own bottle of water.

I have read the negative feedback from others to see just how the manager/owner would respond.... clearly the defensive, argumentative attitude filters from the top down so I am not expecting an apology without a defensive excuse attached. Either way having travelled to NZ to visit friends... our first experience eating out was a disappointment mostly due to staff interactions. This feedback will also be documented on 'trip advisor' as we want others to avoid the totality of this bitter tasting experience. There were many gorgeous cafes to choose from in the same area so I am sure another will offer respectful customer service.

I came here for a dinner party with roughly 40 other people. The place has a chill vibe and nice spot to grab a meal and chill at Mission Bay.

The staff are amazing, they were friendly, polite and concise. I preordered my meal and it came out basically 3 minutes after I was ready to eat.

I ordered the Vegan Tofu and vege stir-fry. It's not on the menu but the staff kindly provided it as an option for the night as they currently offer no vegan mains.

My meal was pretty tasty with a decent variety of veges. Mushrooms, zucchini, capsicum, onion, green beans and broccoli. The veges still had a nice bite to them but in my opinion they resembled steamed vegetables more than stir-fried veg, they were lacking in char and colour. It had an Asian inspired Hoison sauce which really made the dish, the sauce had the most flavour. I wouldn't mind eating this again if I came here with a group but wouldn't come back to the cafe specifically for the meal. Everyone else at the table enjoyed their dishes, the Turkish Lamb seemed to have the most rave reviews.

Mission Bay Cafe also have an impressive drinks menu and cabinet full of cakes and baked goods. I would probably come back if I'm in the area and in the mood for some Port wine though.

Food is of high standard. Had the salt and pepper squid. Perfectly cooked. Busy and food might take longer to come out but worth the wait. Staff are friendly.
Julia Louise
Popped in on a cold afternoon for something warming and enjoyed the quinoa porridge (pictured) and spicy chai latte. Food was really tasting and portion was generous. Options for gluten free/dairy free available. Decor is a little dated and it was pretty noisy inside but otherwise a good experience.

Food, location, and drinks are excellent! coffee over there is beautiful! nice and strong! but they kinda lack service. went there quite a few times, and there were times when the waiters were abit rude. other than that nice place to go.

Food was very good, enjoyed the Steak Sandwich. HOWEVER, I was very disappointed when I ordered a Berry Smoothie. All they did was pour it from a "HomeGrown" Brand juice bottle which can bought from the supermarket, and added a few blocks of ice. I expected a freshly blended smoothie, as most cafes do this. Not something that can be bought from the Supermarket. Service was good.
Rachel
Amazing cafe - friendly staff and yummy food. Definitely recommend going here. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all to die for. And you definitely can't go past their cake cabinet without wanting to try something. Definitely cater for everyone and if there's something you're not happy with the staff are always willing to fix it for you
Chris Denne
The food was good when it finally came. They forgot my order and when the girl put the plate down she was sour like a lemon . Have been here before and it was ok so maybe just a bad day

Me and my friend came here who are both supervisors in a busy cbd cafe. I wouldn't say our expectations are that high, we just like helpful staff and good customer service. While we were here I asked about the dessert wine (the taste, sweetness) obviously was having a blonde moment when it came out in a small glass. I asked for it to be changed as they could just pour it back in the bottle but one of the waitresses said this is not possible. I also asked about the creamy mushrooms and if they contained dairy and she just shrugged and said I don't think so. I asked for her to check with the kitchen but she said they were too busy. She told me to order something else as she could not be bothered to help us. We asked for the manager who kindly swapped my wine with no trouble. Can't understand why this was such a hassle in the first place. We didn't stay to order food as our waitress was so unhelpful. Luke Green

The cafe is usually packed whenever I come by so thought I'd give it a go. Stopped by for lunch and was lucky enough to get a table on the inside.

Waitresses cleared the table and handed out menus. Quite a range of brunch and lunch items on the menu so choosing was a bit difficult.

The hot chocolate was really hot but didn't have a very strong chocolate flavour. I had the creamy mushroom with chorizo. It was nice but I found the chorizo overpowered the taste of the mushroom and truffle oil. Also felt a film of oil on my lips after each bite. Also had some of the calamari and it was cooked really well, crispy and tender.

Nice food and the service was good.
Nina
Good coffee, I always order the Long black or latte. Fabulous environment. Always busy, fast service. I definitely recommend. I haven't tried thier menu yet. Just coffee.
I've been coming here for years and I've never had a negative experience.
Today I went for the first time since becoming vegan and the staff were so kind and helpful! They made a vegan veggie works for my partner and I and it was delicious!
Coffee is well made also.

It would be nice if more restaurants in Mission Bay (including MBC) had a vegan option ready on the menu, would make things a bit easier. But glad to know vegans are well cared for at Mission Bay Cafe.
Mercypatch
Setting is nice, outlook to mission bay. Our experience was killed by a chain smoker right by our table. Was pretty awful. Be nice to have a smokefree outside area where you can enjoy the freshness of the beach and clean air without worrying about this happening.

I had the open omelette with Ciabatta,Super tasty with all the ingredients they serve it with. Could have eaten so much more, wasn't full but was semi content.

Service was ok, friendly enough but nothing I'd expect from any restaurant along mission bay. I'd expect pretty extraordinary service for the location of these places.

Me and my partner arrived for a late lunch, there weren't any tables inside which was to our delight.... Inside is quite cramped for space and it was a beautiful day. The wait staff were friendly, professional and attentive, we had a beautiful view while we waited for our meals.

My partner had the seafood chowder, which was full of seafood to our delight and not blended seafood. I am
not a fan of seafood but I quite enjoyed the taste. I had the vege works which was so refreshing and a real delight to eat.

I would highly recommend both dishes as they very satisfying and light on the stomach.
OldGoatsKnowBest
Whenever I visit it always seems popular, maybe because the service is good but also because of the mantra of always being open. The coffee is not perfect to my taste but it gets close and I rank this business higher because of consistency, tidiness and it's strong Mission Bay association. (ps. visited 13 May and found coffee below par. Different barista from prev, but dropped rating for lack of consistency)
Dimitrios Konstantopoulos
Not a bad option at all.
Nice menu generous portions tasty and well presented food.
Nice coffee.
Great spot with civilised environment.
Friendly service but can be improved.
Dining Furniture a bit outdated but overall a very pleasant place.

An easy 4 out of 5.
With a bit of tlc can be a 4,5 out of 5 in my opinion.

Taran
Good food - good environment- service was slow but food was good after all. Would go again for a nice dinner with my partner. Parking was ok not an issue and great views to match.
Tavita Milford
Bought a Hot Chocolate here one time and as enticing as it was trying to dine in, I had a tight schedule. But the hot chocolate kept me satisfied about this place.

The person who served me was really kind, the making time was average but didn't really matter.

Inside is pretty flash, which was why I considered dining in with my hot chocolate instead of going out. The tables are aligned in what it seems like a hallway. The only challenge to that is it's quite compacted with the tables on the other side which can be a bit difficult to walk through when it's busy, but still a great cafe
Ayaan
We always by pass wondering how this place is we decided to stop today though I wish I kept going we walk I get seated to a table sit for round 10 mins then we get some service would you like a menu mmmm yes please that's why we here,do we order food and coffees 1 coffee comes out then food then my coffee and scone cheese scone which they should have titled pepper scone maybe try tasting your mix before you bake them and girls serve with a smile it's not that hard as for breakfast it lacked more flavour then the scone so yeah look in to guys rant over..

Called in for an evening latte on Monday 26 Dec 2016 with my friend Peter Tan, we were going to go for a tumeric latte @ True Food but they were closed. Tried out the new pavement seating outside since was no one there - $5.75 is not what I would usually pay for a coffee buy it was a nice evening and AAA75 coffee - whatever that means I do not know, it's the brand of coffee there use here.

Really appreciate that it's open today(Christmas Day), even though there is public holiday surcharge.
My brekkie: creamy mushrooms & my friend's: MBC grilled
I love both of them so much, especially the creamy sause. I add a little pepper into the sauce, which will enrich the flavour.
Also, there is a photo competition on Instagram by the end of January, interesting. I posted the photo as soon as I finished my fabulous meal. lol

Friendly staff. Ordered the Southern Fried Chicken burger for both my brother and I, which was on special. Although the bun was a bit plain and could have been softer, the chicken, bacon and avocado combination was appetisingly juicy. Coffee was excellent. Will come back on another sunny day.

Service was amazing!!! Decor was nice. And food was soo good! So fresh!!!! I loved everything. Will definitely be back! For entrees we got the calamari squid and chicken skewers. For mains we got duo if lamb and rib eye fillet. For drinks we got a feijoa smoothie! I cant fault anything about the food. Ingredients were fresh. Everything was super tasty and well cooked! I would definitely recommend this place for a cute date night or family event! The place is quite small and cramped but the service and food make up for that. Hopefully they will be able to expand in the future :P overall my partner and I really enjoyed it! Food and service was just superb! :) 😁
Jessica Lane
Lovely place, the tables are crammed a little close together which would be a bit difficult to navigate if the place was really busy. Delicious food and beautifully presented. A very impressive display of cakes in the cabinet. I would certainly visit again, we had brunch and I would happily sample the lunch menu another time.

Service was great. Food was great. Company was great. Thanks for a first time experience at this cafe. Brang out another side of me. Awesome work

Mission Bay Cafe used to be my local when I lived in Orakei and we went almost every weekend. So it was nice to revisit having not been there for awhile. I was pleased to see the food is still fab! We grabbed a table inside to hide from the crazy weather. I had the French toast with a side of bacon (of course) and a coffee. Both were delicious, I will definitely be making sure there isn't as much time between visits next time!

Came to this cafe recently for breakfast with a couple of friends from Canada. My first impression was that the place was neat and clean. The service was friendly and attentive. As for the food it was good and tasty. Parking was convenient, just across the road and of course you could relax and walk along the beach after the meal.

If you are in Mission Bay, this is a good place to drop in for your cup of coffee and perhaps for some some good, tasty food.

Really dissapointed by their hospitality. Sunday afternoon me and my friend went for brunch there expecting quality food and service. Unfortunately the attitude of the staff member was really poor towards us! All the locals were given menus and water whereas they didn't bother asking us for anything. The girl taking order was throughing bad attitude making us feel uncomfortable. The food was fine but their hospitality spoiled our mood. Sorry to say but will never go there again.

Absolutely love the location of this place . One of the first places that I tried after coming to NZ. Quality of the food is just fantastic and absolutely in love with their hot chocolate . You can order as much as you want but one dish is enough for one person. They serve huge portions. 😍
Carla
My partner and I came here on a sunny Tuesday afternoon to have coffee and a bite to eat. The ambiance is great, friendly staff and the food is yum! I ordered the Crispy Salt and Pepper Squid which was a delight, it delivered the crispiness and perfect balance of saltiness. I enjoyed it and would definitely recommend it.
Nik Kho
Had lunch here with Carla. Love their MBC Grill. Enjoyed the Chorizo and Agria Rosti. Their house relish was a nice touch! If you want something fresh, try their Crispy Salt & Pepper Squid, delicious!
Aroha Kay
Absolutely amazing brunch date and service, beautiful food great views good people. Date with one of my girlies to end our coffee date walk around mission bay. Perfect

This cafe is on the main strip of Mission Bay. I don't often come here as I find that a large proportion of the restaurants here are targeted for tourists and are not of the same quality as you can find elsewhere but I really felt like cake and decided to come here.
We arrived at around 7:30pm on a weeknight. I was surprised at how quiet it was. I'm not sure if this is usual or not.
The waitress was lovely and was happy to warm our items as we requested.
I had a soy hot chocolate which was nice but could have done with a bit more chocolate. We ordered the orange cake and a chocolate caramel tart. Both were absolutely delicious. My favourite was definitely the orange cake as it is not as sweet.
Will definitely be back for cake again.
Aabhas Dole
A nice quiet cafe located on my favourite strip in Auckland. Can't really beat the location.

You get typical cafe breakfast and coffee here. The food is tasty but I won't say extraordinary.

Friendly staff and fast service.

Will I come back here - Yes :)
Angel_at_your_table
Excellent food & excellent service!!! Our favourite little local hands down!!
We have dined here many times now and it never fails to impress. Great value for money, beautifully presented food, fast & friendly service.
I'm a big fan of their Pork Belly with Honey Kumara, Watermelon & Vietnamese Slaw. The pork was succulent & tender with just the right amount of jus. My friend had the Lamb & the one mouthful he reluctantly parted with was delicious & tender.
I finished with a slice of their Lemon Tart which was one of the best I've ever had. Thanks Mission Bay Cafe, a real local gem!
Minily
Really really nice cafe. The vege works was lovely with the lemon cottage cheese dressing and not over-dressed. The one thing I wasn't keen on (which I wasn't aware of till now) was toasted quinoa. Just a bit too chewy for me. My friend loved her potato cake and ate the entire meal hardly talking and the coffee was delicious.
Good service, simple but good food and will definitely be my go-to-place in mission bay. Prices were fair too.

Very dissapointed with today's meal. I came here with my family and ordered a platter to share and mains. Our mains took more than 50minutes to arrive. I would have understood if the place was full. However, the place was half empty. We asked the waiter where our food was and the only response we got was "it's coming". When we finally got our food, I asked the waiter what happened. He told us that lamb usually takes this long. What kind of restaurant takes 50minutes to cook a lamb? My duo lamb was dry. It was to the point I had difficulty chewing the food. At the checkout rhe manager apologized that the food took so long because one of the kitchen staff injured himself and had to go home. That's funny. Didn't the waiter told me this is how long lamb usually takes to cook in this restaurant? Obviously someone lied. Greately dissapointed in quality of food and service overall. This would probably be my last time coming here.

Enjoyed these two items with special deal. The stake was just exactly medium as I asked. Staff provided good service and showed us their great humor sense. wow 140 characters...

Just had an amazing brunch at mission bay cafe. My partner ordered the Eggs Benedict and I ordered the MBC Grill. Both arrived quickly. The service was exceptional and the food was delicious. This place is always busy when we walk past so we thought we'd give it a try. We will be back again for sure!!

Found the food good as always and customer service was great also. Always a pleasure to visit this cafe and enjoy the atmosphere. The staff are friendly and were very pleasant and attentive. 😊

This is definitely my go to cafe when I'm in Mission Bay. The range of cakes and slices displayed in the food cabinet look amazing. So far, I've tried the banana cake, chocolate raspberry tart, Turkish cake, passion fruit cheese cake, strawberry cheese cake and the caramel slice!

My favourite is the chocolate raspberry tart, no faults there. If you're not a chocolate lover, I recommend the strawberry cheesecake, it's absolutely delicious. Service is friendly, the coffee/mocha drinks are also good.

My go to cafe whenever I'm in mission bay I always get their seafood chowder it's my favourite no other place can ever beat this one! Staff are always super friendly, they make you feel at home and welcomed. Highly recommended

A nice bustling cafe on the beach with friendly service and food coming out well timed. Had the open steak sandwich and cooked well for me (medium). Was nothing overly special and could have a bit more filling, but it was a lovely meal altogether. Ciabatta was toasted nicely and if served on it's own with some spread would make a great toasted bread option. Would return here again to try other options on the menu

Lovely location and the meals are a good size. We had brunch and coffee and enjoyed all aspects of our meal. We sat by the open door and staff offered to put the heater on for us which was great.

I normally don't go for beachfront eateries as they are usually over priced and not very good. However, this place wasn't too bad. The prices were pretty much the same as most regular cafes and the food was pretty good.

I got my go-to breakfast food of eggs Benedict, and I was pretty satisfied, it was a pretty decent portion, nicely presented too. The staff are very friendly and warm!
Vangirl
Had chicken burger and pasta of the day.
Both taste very weak even though it looked delicious. I did not enjoy the meal.
Service was amazing and place itself is very lovely. Just food didn't taste right, needed more flavour in it...
Jessica Li
The menu looks delicious! But my salmon salad lacked a bit in taste unfortunately. It was a decent portion which was good but I felt like there wasn't anything super special about it. Other than that the service was friendly and the food came out super fast and the vibe of the place is nice and relaxed :)

I've had quite an enjoyable brunch catch up with my friends here a while back. The name of this cafe is pretty straight forward, nothing special, it is what it is. That is probably why after taking the first bite of my meal, I was absolutely blown away. I would say this is one of the best cafes I've been to for lunch.

Staff was friendly, and our food and drinks came out pretty quickly after we made the order.

We all loved our meals and were so full by the end of it, we could barely move. Another bonus, is that it is right near the beach!

Would definitely return for brunch/lunch if I was in the area again.

I really thought i would enjoy this place after coming here quite often with my boyfriend. We usually get served by one of the lovely managers called john, but today we were served by another manager. It was a lady with black hair and ties her hair into a pony tail. She was impatient and rude at us when we just asked her a simple question to get us sauce. I thought it was unprofessional of her to snap back at us and roll her eyes. Also when we wanted water we waved our hand out to her but she completely ignored us and asked another staff to serve us. When i saw her serving other customers she gave them such nice customer service and to us she was super rude. I feel like i would not come back here to eat again because of the experience i received today. For the a manager i expected better than that. Even her staff was more polite than her.

Nice place and nice location. We already had our dinner. After that we wanted something sweet for our deserts. Taste is good. Price seemed more to me.

Bustling Friday night and boy was Mission Bay Cafe packed. Me and a friend had already had dinner so were after something sweet to finish off the night.

We shared a raspberry cheese cake which was phenomenal, soft and rich as you would expect from a cheesecake, which was complemented with the occasional crunch of raspberry seed.

The coffees were great, and the waiters and waitress all provided great banter. Excellent vibe overall and we really enjoyed the experience.

Showstopper: absolutely glorious cheesecake

Overall Grade: B+

I came here for brunch with a couple of friends and was quite impressed by the service and food coming out so quickly. I'm a bit skeptical when eating along mission bay as standards for food aren't that high because they feed mainly tourists, but wasn't dissapointed with the food here. They took our fussy requests very well, and changed what they put on our plates accordingly. I had the fruit salad - it lacked the coconut foam but was still good. Although next time I would recommend the chefs leave out icing sugar... it's a bit much. I also had the agria hash which was perfectly cooked. Overall a pleasant experience and prices were good.

We came to Mission Bay Cafe one day during a uni break. The cafe was relatively quiet when we came in with only two other tables occupied. We came slightly before peak time though. Service was great! The staff were friendly and attentive. I ordered the potato hash cakes with bacon, and my friend ordered the open steak sandwich. I liked my meal, but couldn't finish it as I wasn't too hungry when we popped in. portion sizes were good and so was the coffee! We will be back :)

Only popped in for a quite dessert but it was amazing. I had the walnut and coffee slice I believe and every bite was like a little bit of heaven in my mouth. Definitely will come back here to try other items on the menu!

I come here almost every weekend for the salt & pepper squid and coffee. Best squid I've found in Auckland, and great price! The side salad is even really tasty. The service is always fast and friendly. I've also had the omelette which was delicious, and the slices in the cabinet always look so tempting but I haven't tried one yet. I think mission bay cafe is really underrated and deserves more attention from regular cafe goers
Food Adventures With AnnaJ
Stopped in for coffee and cake after an afternoon stroll. We shared the chocolate a raspberry tart and had coffees. Hands down best tart ive had! So good, great balance of raspberry to chocolate. Coffee took a long time to come and my latte was not good. It was gritty and the milk was burnt, really disappointing as I was looking forward to it. Had a look over the menu and would be keen to come back and try a meal
Shelly
Come here occasionally for coffee and breakfast, sometimes for late nights! The staff are super friendly and coffee is great - award winning should i say! I love that they are open late ish, food is great too!

A cool place in a cool location. This place has very nice short eats and beverages. Staff is overall friendly and courteous. Ambience is nice. Will go for dinner next time.
Jelly465
Nice cafe with nice food. Had the potato and Parmesan cake, a little lumpy, but still nice, poached eggs, which may i add were cooked to perfection. hollindaise sauce..beautiful. Topped with bacon.

Nice atmosphere, nice attentive staff will definitely come back to try the dinner sometime
This place has been around for as long as I have been to mission bay although I have only visited a few times. Came in for afternoon tea last week, loved the chocolate brownie and my friend liked her chocolate tart and tea. Good service too. My 11 month old liked the music and the big picture on the wall with people on the beach to look at :)

Chicken main was sensational. Fantastic service. Staff went above and beyond for our b'day celebration. 😀10 out of 10. Will be back in the future.
Victoria
Decent coffee, service was a bit slow (and it wasn't that busy). We sat for maybe 15 minutes after being seated before they came to take our order, we almost got up to leave as we thought they'd forgotten us.

Otherwise nice atmosphere, we only got a bowl of chips to share so can't comment on the main menu. Convenient location if you're in the area.

I would say best coffee around Auckland
Amazing staff
The make you feel like your having coffee in your own place
I would say the coffee is perfect 90% of the time
Go there and ask Jebran to make your coffee. If he's not there then Eco is very good as well
Thanks mission bay Caffee and thanks to the staff

This cafe is situated right in the heart of mission bay. You can tell this place would be buzzing during summer time with its great indoor outdoor flow. The menu has a good variety of options and the all day breakfast is a plus! The Brioche French toast was delicious and very pretty on the plate. The banana, berry and toasted coconut worked well together as a whole. We were happy with the service we received despite peak brunch hour. Would like to try other dishes as my dish was easy to please being a sweet tooth

Staff here are absolutely great! Lovely atmosphere and the food is great too! Oh and the coffee is LOVELY

I came with a friend of mine, I had the potato hash which was absolutely delicious and she had the Shakshuka. Both Dishes were seasoned extremely well

Overall great experience

We will be back!

Have been here a couple of times, and returned mainly for the $33 two course meal you can get Monday to Thursday. And it what's more, you can choose from most things in the menu. It's great value because you can order an entre to share with you partner, a main each, and share a dessert.

This time my partner ordered the beetroot risotto balls to start. Not raging in flavour, they definitely needed the aioli to make them taste like something, but still pleasant. I had the lamb main, which I had my eye on last time I was here. It was quite tasty, but I felt like Manu Feildel from my MKR as I said to myself in an entertaining French accent, 'where's the sauce?!' It really needed it with the shredded lamb encased in filo. Tender, but a bit dry. My partner's seafood saute was fantastic, with a delicious, light asian inspired sauce.

Even though we were both ridiculously full by now, it was time for my dessert of chocolate lava cake. And lava cake it sure was, well more like a whole volcano. As soon as I dug my spoon in, the goo came oozing, and didn't stop until half the plate was covered. It was probably a bit undercooked, but hey, it was like licking the bowl of a really yummy cake mix.

Will most likely be back another time when I feel like a good meal out for good value. I also like that they serve Hopt sodas, a great alternative when you don't feel like alcohol.

Aura like Wagyu beef, you just a Steak-Umm
Paired with shiraz for the taste to serve at table side
My lyric through the vocal take my palette on a flavour ride
It's obvious I'm gonna do it, right outta FlushingPercussion gushing after the session right to the luncheon
Came here on a Sunday morning after my graveyard shift and it was packed, there were maybe 3-4 empty tables left and this was only around 10-11am!

The service was decent, the staff were attentive and ensured we were happy and satisfied.

Excuse the semi blurry photo of the eggs benedict! They serve your food and ask if you'd like cracked pepper on top, I'm a huge fan of pepper so I asked for a lot.

Unfortunately I can't comment too well on the taste of the food as i felt quite sick whilst eating it (not the fault of the cafe, but from my poor drinking choices a few hours prior). The bacon was perfectly crispy and the spinach was a bit too wilted for my liking and actually softened my muffins to a mushy consistency. The hollandaise sauce was good and the presentation of the food was great! Eggs were cooked well - whites were fully cooked and the yolk was semi cooked but still a tad runny.

I would recommend this cafe as it is adequately staffed, well trained and the food isn't too shabby - hopefully I'll have the chance to visit again to give it a better review.

21/06 update :

Coffee is very good. Their flat white is an average price ($4/small single shot) but they charged us $5.80 for a large double shot coffee which I find a bit expensive (large coffees are normally double shot in general aren't they?).

I feel that the food ends up becoming over priced when you ask for a substitution (aka tomatoes instead of mushrooms) and their sides are very expensive (a single chorizo sausage is $6).

Overall, I'm not a huge fan and the food isn't shabby but I think you can find something cheaper and just as tasty - if you're on a budget.

Came here on the weekend, and it's very rare do I give a 1, but on this case I'm not happy at all, waited to be served while staff member busy talking to friend or boss or colleague? They wernt a diner let's say that, any who next they say " what does the KID want" to my little miss 3, she's a child not a kid, sounded very unprofesh- any who to top it off... Miss 3s child's hot choc comes out boiling hot to the point it's burnt her little mouth, we ask For child hot meaning for a child not something boiling hot, common sense. Anywho ordered musli and it was soooo average wouldn't re-order hardly ate it, could have made better at home, next stop trying to get a waitress attention she she's me trying to and ignores and walks off to talk to her college. Will not be back

Came here a while ago for a business lunch. I had the salad, which was tasted great. The dressing was very complimentary and not drowning out the natural flavour of everything else which is a plus. The staff were friendly and hospitable. Would definitely go back.

Loving the music! Featured Chet faker, Milky chance, it was almost a triple j type playlist for those in the know of aussie radio. The food looked pretty good however I was just in for a salted lychee hopt soda. Pretty good low key vibe for a Friday night! Will return to try the food sometime!
Alexandra Ingram
Mission bay cafe is pretty average. It's food is nice but nothing special. Cafe is loud and food takes ages to come. Staff do not have the best English so it was difficult to communicate and order.
Marsha Laskey
A great place on a summer night for a glass of chilled wine and a shared platter. Very nice and great efficient service too. Will be back for sure.
Nicola Hoogenboom
Food was average, service was terrible and coffee was worse (clearly one shot in my latte). The price was unreasonably high and the 15% holiday surcharge unwarranted. No wonder they were the least busy cafe on the beach.

The only redeeming qualities this place has are a child friendly play space and good location.
Clare Gallie
I live close to Misison Bay, and am just sad that haven't I discovered this wonderful cafe before? Superb service, great cofee, glorious and very very good cafe food, each dish just a little bit special and different from the usual cafe food. The many gateaus, cakes and muffins looked divine.
I highly recommend you go here whether for a just a coffee, or for breakfast, or meal. Evening menu and our food was great before/after a movie.
Rachel Cubitt
wow is all I can say about this place, it was fantastic!. Me and my husband have never been here before but it was a really great experience. The waitress was always keeping a watch to make sure we were ok. We had the current deal of $30 for entrée and mains which made it very affordable. The food was amazing I had the garlic bread and eye fillet with mash beans and the mushroom sauce....nothing wrong with it at all. It was an absolute explosion of taste in my mouth. Only fault was that my stomach wasn't big enough to finish the whole meal!! We will visit back there again. Thanks to the staff for making it a great night:)

This is a great place for breakfast. I regularly eat here after a run along the waterfront. Interesting range of breakfast options, always beautifully cooked. Good coffee, good service and sensibly priced. Not at all complacent like so many prime location establishments.

I'm fussy and I like it!
David Boshier
This place has no redeeming features. Poor service with food that seems to lack any love. Even the tea was bad, it tasted like old tea bags.

We ordered for breakfast savory mince on toast which did taste ok-ish however it was very watery. The side of black pudding was some cheap supermarket type roll and it tasted nothing like it should. The poached eggs on toast were cold and well over cooked.

The staff were totally dis-interested.

Not worth trying to find a park for.

We went to the Mission Bay Cafe for lunch today - 14 Feb 2013. When the food came out, the squid was fairly good - but my fiance's fish was raw. Needless to say we stopped eating as raw fish is a very careless error, not to mention potentially fatal from an eating establishment. What type of chefs do they have working there? Had to take the plate to the counter ourselves as no wait-person/s were around at the time. The "manager" was called to discuss our issue but she pointed out that "the fish is meant to be cooked like that". What? It's meant to be raw? She changed tactic, and said "oh, it's meant to be cooked medium to rare." What? It's not steak! - Fish is not cooked medium to rare - and this one was raw! She had no management skill whatsoever and to practically laugh through (what could have been very fatal) issue was very unprofessional and lacked customer service on every level. Obviously we refused to pay for such disgraceful and terrible overall service.
To those who are thinking of eating at this place - think again. Plenty of other, better eateries in the area. And those who do want to eat there and decide on the fish - be warned.

I went to lunch at the Mission Bay Cafe (MBC) a couple of days ago. I was very impressed with the attentive and friendly staff even when they hit the lunch rush. I had the chicken and cashew salad and it was delicious. Great coffee too! Would definitely recommend and will be returning! Thanks!

Went to Mission Bay cafe last weekend and wanted to write something here to make mention of such a fantastic cafe this is!
First of all, this place was humming, super busy, but we were served quickly and the coffee was the best I have had for some time. Little Miss 7 was given crayons and a book so was very content. Really friendly service and the food was delicious! Barely a wait for our meal, and was really impressed with the attentive wait staff and friendly service. Fresh, tasty food and a great menu, haven't dined here in the evening but certainly will in the near future - a great wee gem in Mission Bay - shouldn't be overlooked!
Jenny
We have come here quite a few times now and really like the cakes!! It is hard to find a place that offers a range fo fresh cakes! The dinner we had there once was fine, but I guess since it is a Cafe, it might be better off to focus on cakes and snacks. It is always popular around afternoon tea time and has a nice location to either sit outside or sit inside right next to the large open windows. It's a great place to do what you do in Mission Bay: enjoy a nice coffee and watch people walking past :) The staff is very friendly and is very helpful in advising on their products.
Kay Adams
Great place to have a quick meal casually. Had the beef salad was very nice. Staff were great. They knew we wanted to share our entrees, and put the seafood chowder in separate bowls for us. Good work
Ian
For Mission Bay I would have expected better and boy is this place cramped just to many tables which most of were not full.

Food was ok, Caesar Salad was mainly storks and the egg that was meant to be hard boiled was runny, as for Bacon there was not much to be found...
When you advertise fresh smoothies, don't then go get a commercial bottle and put it into a glass were the customer can see you..

But they know how to charge Mission Bay prices though..
Janak
Aw sum place on mission bay, coffees, nice & small menu, good food and very friendly service, great experience!!!
Greg Thompson
Great service, food arrived quickly and the coffee was hot.

Food was excellent, we had bagels and they were fresh with lots of fillings. We also had the blueberry pancakes which we will be back for more.
Lena Duffin
I went here yesterday morning with a group of friends for brunch, and we were all very pleased with our meals. Even on a busy day we were served promptly, with hot food and coffee, but didn't feel rushed.
Betsy McArthur
Decent coffee but food terrible...do NOT waste your money. We live locally and thought we would give the place a try...how bad could one of these highly touristed places be? Well...the answer is...VERY very bad. Terrible food. Don't ask me how they could get toast with tomato and avocado wrong but they did. Terribly wrong. The toast wasn't actually toasted and the avocado wasn't actually fresh avocado but a gelatinous mixture with lemon added, who knows how old. It was really really bad. Do not waste your money here on food. Coffee drinkable. That's all its good for.
Ryan
Just got back from a breakfast there, the food was really good. We have 2 children and although it was quite busy, the staff were great, they bought out some crayons to keep the kids entertained.

Oh and the coffee!!! wow, they must put something special in it.

Will go back for sure.
Cindy Buell
Best coffee in Mission Bay.
Sue Croft
Five of us from Northland went here for lunch today. Great service, meals arrived promptly and were very fresh. Excellent value for money.

Mission bay cafe is located right in the heart of mission bay. Always bustling with people, it's a great place for brunch on a beautiful Saturday morning.

I was famished and ordered the pork ribs which hit the spot. The meat was tender and fell off the bones but I LOVED the slaw - crispy and creamy. The chunky fries were the let down of the meal, a bit too big for my liking. Overall, great meal.

The hubby had the eggs Benedict with portobello mushroom. It was delicious! We have a thing where we gotta poke the egg first and rate how good the runny egg yolk mixes with the hollandaise sauce - mission bay cafe made the mark.

We finished our meal off with a rocky road slice. My husband, being the rocky road slice connoisseur that he is, gave it a 8.5/10. :p
