Review Dear Jervois - Auckland Central

Judith
Nice little cafe to eat at. I had the smashed avocado with poached eggs. It was good, but there were some unnecessary spices; some extra salt would have been perfect. The plates are very presentable and we were served quickly. The atmosphere is very pleasant and peaceful. Overall, I'd recommend this place, even for a simple coffee break.

Best breaky spot in the Ponsonby area! I normally struggle to look past the DJ Complete but I went with the Eggs Benedict today and it was equally delicious. The service is always top-tier and it’s a really nice space with indoor seating and some outdoor tables with heaters. Will be back for more soon! Hamish Dorrington Kakapo Business Sales

My absolute favourite brunch place to go!! It has the best avocado and eggs on toast and the flavours are amazing!! It’s such good quality and the staff are all so friendly. Service is quick and literally so many options. I also got the matcha latte which was really well done too.
Kate Pitches
Amazing place and great staff. Food really varied and delicious, range from cabinet sandwiches to full meals. The salmon poke was incredible 🫶🏼

Recommend the Eggs Benedict! Classic dish completed perfectly with the Hollandaise sauce being perfect, served with sour dough and a rosti. The service was great and we came exactly at opening time and there were plenty of seats. Atmosphere was great with little touches of decorations throughout the place. I can see why it is such a popular spot IN Herne Bay!

Stumbled upon this place while staying a few nights in Auckland. Great coffee, great food, great service. My 6 year old said they were the best pancakes he had ever eaten. Would highly recommend.

Nice cafe, Rye bread is sweet and its not something i have enjoyed with my smashed avocado. Portion is not filling.
Kasun Ranga
Great cafe for breakfast or brunch. Make good coffee and delicious food. We had deconstructed breakfast burrito and eggs Benedict with mushrooms on potato rosti. Delicious and fresh... Amazing customer service and the staff were super friendly.

Tasty, well portioned food. A little pricey, but the quality and amount of food makes it well worth it in my opinion. Nothing truly outstanding about the service or atmosphere, but also zero complaints. Have returned and will continue to do so.

My favourite cafe spot for coffee and breakfast. lovely staff. Only thing i could think of to improve is using fresh avocado instead of frozen.
Tia Lindbom
Top tier cafe! Our go to work spot. Great friendly staff, the blonde guy is great super friendly and always accommodating and one of the new girls does super cool coffee art. Brought my Grandparents here and they loved the art she did for them - made their day. Great food - banana bread is amazing and the vegan/gf biscuits!
Campbell Clarkson
The food is great here! Very popular spot but if you time it right there's always a seat. Would highly recommend.

Very popular cafe in herne bay - they now have pet-friendly deck area around the back which is a plus 🌟 - Amazingly presented food and they are very yom! Very good coffee too

Don't think, have a drink! And if your hungry the food is great too! Honestly was up the road at the butchers son they were at around 40%full and the food wait time was going to be 1.5hrs... No thank you, saw this place and what a find. Staff greeted us friendly and smiling, coffee cam out fast and food was out within 15mins of ordering. The dishes we had were all on point and staff asked if we were all vegan and told us about optional sauces for vegans. Venue itself is very easy going, you can rock up in stubbies or a nice dress. Give it a go!

I came here 3 times in 4 days during a stay in Auckland, that’s how much I enjoyed the food and wanted to come back and try the rest. Overview of what I ate: Avocado toast on rye - sub eggs for haloumi - loved the pot of olive oil on the side. The whipped feta was to die for. Creamy mushrooms - add potato rosti. If you’ve got a big appetite this is the meal for you. It was so moreish and the rosti was cooked to perfection. It’s a big meal so just be aware before ordering. Vegan tacos - Mum and I shared these as an appetizer. They were a great mix of veggies and beans and the salsa on top created a really delicious balance to the whole thing. I was scared the refried beans might overpower the whole thing but they didn’t at all. Harissa lamb with seasonal roast vegetables - soooo many veggies, the artichoke purée on the side was heavenly and the lamb was cooked to perfection and plenty of it. The staff are really helpful and patient with any requests and amendments to the menu. Great coffee too. 100% recommend this spot to anyone passing through Auckland

Great cafe for brunch in Ponsonby with an extensive menu offering plenty of classics such as eggs benedict and also many vegetarian and gluten free options. Gets very busy on weekends and reservations are not accepted so expect a wait. Food was pretty good but also a tad bit expensive.
Elise D
Ordered the shashuka gluten free and asked for extra feta which was a good decision to add some extra flavour. I could’ve done with a little more of the tomato sauce but the dish was otherwise well spiced and very filling. My companions got the eggs Benedict and the creamy mushrooms with added egg, both of which were good sizes, but still very expensive compared to other cafes. The creamy mushrooms tasted insane so I’d definitely be ordering the vegetarian version of that if I were to return, but the price of all the dishes does make it a little hard to justify.
#fatlyfe
Ordered the mushroom and potato rosti stack along with eggs on toast and a few sides/extras. The iced chocolate was probably one of the best I’ve ever had! Tasted just like Lewis creamery 😍 the rosti was nice and crispy added that level of crunch to the meal the lentils had a nice taste but would have preferred for it not to be on the rosti. Eggs cooked perfectly. I know the side of bacon would have been great but currently
Given up meat

Went there on a public holiday and the place was crowded! Food took awhile to be served but it was definitely worth the wait! Love the food! Everything was great, salmon in the poke bowl is so fresh, mushroom is juicy & creamy and green tea waffle is not too sweet, perfecto! Definitely will be back again ❤️💯
Lukas
Oh dear. Ordered a coffee and it came fairly promptly. Order some lunch and 30 mins later nothing. Upon enquiry that had “forgotten” our order. I can’t fathom how that happens apart from incompetent staff and poor systems. Was disappointing, going away hungry. Everyone else around us got their food. Can’t really rate it for that behaviour. At least they didn’t charge us for the coffee in the end, but not being able to manage the basics means it’s a flat one star.

A great brunch reverses the pains from the night before. Hungover and clutching to dear life we decided on Dear Jervois. The DJ Complete was awesome. Add a side of hollandaise and you've got yourself a deluxe eggs benny. Coffee and mimosas were on point too.
João Plácido
After several friends telling me great things about this place, we decided to try it out.
It is definitely a good place to have a nice breakfast and the atmosphere with the good costumer service makes you feel almost at home....but when it comes to food, I have to say that we've ate better. It was good but the pancake stack was too sweet and the eggs Benedict could have more bacon.

Sunday brunch, our first time here. The place was buzzing, staff were grace under pressure. Will return.
Gabriella Devita Febiola
Love the ambiance and food. Staff were attentive too. Good spot for brunch and I’m pretty sure it’s dog-friendly as well.
Julia Louise
Enjoyed brunch with friends on a Sunday morning. The cafe was busy and we were advised there was a 15 wait for a table but in the end waited only 5-10 minutes and were seated at a lovely table in the courtyard. Love the interesting options on the menu and we all enjoyed our food. Good options for gluten free/dairy free/vegan

I’ve been here a few times and each time has served to be a great experience 😊

From the moment you walk in to the time you walk out, the service is amazing!! The food is even better, I love eating here it’s great

Came here for some breakfast on Saturday. Nice place with good selection on the menu. Service was great too. We had the Mermaid bowl, beautifully presented with plenty of fruits, granola and toasted coconut. We also had one of the blueberry muffins with that lovely melted cream cheese icing. The muffin itself was a little dry but the cream cheese sure made up for it. Great coffee too!

Great place for brekky in the Herne Bay Beverly Hills area of Auckland..Love the half size benedict-perfect for me, and a great coffee goes down well..

The staff was lovely, the cafe vibe was chill which I loved and the fact they had outside seating was a bonus.

The thing that let this place down was the food, I had a Mermaid bowl and it was just too sweet. It had a Banana on my plate already and it tasted like there was banana in the puree purple stuff too which was just banana overload.

I had to order fries too as fries always save the day when Im feeling underwhemled at what Ive just eaten.

My partner had the Vegan Tacos and he felt they needed some heat like chilli flakes or hot sauce, so he wasnt very impressed.

Lovely place but the food let it down for us.

Also fix that front door, its annoying how it slams all the time.

Cheers

Damn went here for lunch on Saturday with a mate and was not impressed. This place is all over Instagram and I've heard such good things about this place but it was such a let down. We walked in and nobody attended us for 7 mins was so odd all the staff would just walk past and stare at us was very uncomfortable. Finally we got seated at a SHARED TABLE omg so annoying which may I add was right at the back by the bathrooms when there were clear tables everywhere ugh. We sit down not even for a second and a lady comes over and asks what drinks we wanted and we obviously asked her to come back in a bit. We ordered our drinks and I ordered an iced mocha BUT 'they didn't have ice' which is a lie because ice literally takes 5 mins to make and you're a cafe of-course you have ice. I ended up ordering a Red Velvet Latte and my friend got a Raspberry smoothie. we both hated our drinks. We both ordered the Pancakes because they sounded delicious, when they came they were super pretty and very photo worthy but they were full of Nutella so it was wayyyyy to sweet and over powering I don't think I ever tasted the pancakes or fruit I only taste Nutella ugh annoying, my friend also didn't like the pancakes because it was just full of Nutella. I also found a hair in my food to top off my experience lol. Literally was a waste of money never gone be back there sis. Not to mention the bathrooms were disgusting and there was urine all over the floor like babe do you know you have to clean bathrooms. ALSO when we were paying the coffee guy was literally making an iced drink WITH ICE so basically got lied to yooo. Overall experience was not good and was very disappointed :(((. x

Had heard lots of reviews raving about Dear Jervois and had to check it out myself. The food was fresh, with different options to suit dietary requirements. Even though it was busy with being the weekend, the service was quick and easy. Will definitely be back!
Lily
Love the whole experience of Dear Jervois, have tried most dishes on the menu and they all are great. Stoked that the open Snö. Try and visit between meal times so you don’t have to wait too long to be seated
Cheapeatobsession
Cool atmosphere, Got to sit outside under shelter which was nice as it had lovely plantations. Food was good but not amazing. Ordered the waffles and found them a bit dry but still were nice. Ice chocolate was perfect! #goodfood #waffles #flowers #pretty #ponsonby #chocolate

Perfect #brunch spot for the weekend! Dear Jervois’ reputation preceeds itself as we struggled to find an outside table to seat our doggo (a major bonus; you can bring your pupp!!!). It’s difficult to pick a dish to devour from the menu as everything sounds delicious and when the food finally arrived, it did not disappoint.
Karina
Came into Dear Jervois for some lunch as I had seen it all over Instagram and wanted to try it out. Super busy and took a while for us to be seated. I started off with an iced mocha and Mum got a latte. Mum liked her coffee but I found mine tasted a bit off, but I did have it with cow milk so would like to try it with almond or coconut milk. Mum got the vegan tacos & I got the mermaid bowl. I'm not sure if the mermaid bowl is supposed to be a smoothie bowl but I found the consistency and texture really weird. It kind of tasted like sherbet sort of it was a bit fizzy. I ended up having a few mouthfuls and gave up as I really couldn't enjoy it. Mum thought her tacos were really good though. I would like to come back to give it another go and try some different items of the menu, as I really want to like the cafe. Recently I came in with a friend for lunch and we were not very impressed. When we came in we stood around for 7 minutes without anyone coming to us even though around 3 employees went past and didn't even notice us. When we did get seated we got taken all the way to the back where we had to sit on a shared table which is never nice. My friend ordered an 'iced mocha' but they told us they don't have ice even though when we were leaving we saw them filling a cup with ice so? So she ordered a red velvet latte which we expected to be sweet and when I tried it, it just tasted like cocoa powder so that was disappointing. I then got the raspberry smoothie and ordered it without beetroot but it was so sour it wasn't sweet at all. To eat we both got the pancakes which were presented quite well but were so so sweet because they were coated in nutella all around and layered in-between each pancake. All round I didn't have the best time here which was disappointing :(

Tried this cafe for the first time today and it’s pretty good! The staff are friendly and the food is beautifully plated. I had the zucchini fritter, it needed more seasoning, but otherwise good. 4 stars instead of 5 because for the $$$, the food needed to be excellent and it fell a bit short.
Bella Luv Food
Super packed place to have breakfast/ brunch at the weekend. Lovely atmosphere and the food just look so photogenic. I love the fact that there're so many healthy options on the menu. Also have to mention the perfect coffee as I'm picky on coffee. The price though is a little bit "fancy" just like the area Ponsonby.

Dear Jervois lands itself on Urban List’s best cafes for brekkie in Auckland. Number 9 out of 56 cafes to be exact.

One thing I love about a cafe, is when they have an All Day Breakfast menu. Dear Jervois has an all day breakfast menu! I ended up coming into the cafe to order at 2:15pm wondering if I’d even be able to get a meal from the kitchen still. The kitchen closed in 15 mins and they still served me & were really friendly about it too. There was so much to choose from! Great variety on the menu also! I struggled to decide but I came up with a choice in the end. I chose to order the Mushrooms & Potato Rosti Stack.

I was not disappointed at all! The eggs were beautifully poached! The rosti had a lovely crunch on the outside but was nice & soft, and fluffy on the inside. The lentils added great texture to the dish. The mushrooms had a lovely umami taste to it. I would have loooooved to have a bit more of that pesto on the dish. That is probably the only fault I could find on the dish. But literally, that fault is absolutely minuscule in comparison to the presentation, taste & flavour of the dish.

Service was friendly, fast & efficient. Atmosphere & look of the cafe is so cool. Food was delicious. Coffee was super good! I think they use eighthirty beans. I paid a few dollars more than what I’d usually pay at a cafe for a mushroom and rosti stack. But for the quality of service, food & coffee I experienced today, I would happily pay that again any day.

I would definitely recommend this cafe to a friend & I can totally see why it landed itself on Urban List’s top 56 cafes for breakfast in Auckland. Thank you Dear Jervois!

Good vegetarian choices. Portobello mushrooms dish is flavoursome, light and filling. if you are vegetarian, dont take 5he seat next to kitchen, sink of meat will make you throw up!

Love this place so much !!!! Have only been once but loved my waffles so much, they have an original flavour i’ve never tasted anywhere and their presentation is so unique, the cafe isn’t crowded or cramped every though there were heaps of people there. The service of the waiters was very impressive, everyone working was in such an enthusiastic and cheerful mood which really made my day.

Always wanted to try this cafe. Finally managed to go for brunch last weekend. Staff was lovely and ambience was good. Started with drinks, Vintage Tea was absolutely enjoyable and smoothie was delicious. We ordered Creamy mushroom and Vegan Tacos which were good too. It was busy so it took 20-25 mins for food to arrive after our drinks got served.
Dinushi Seneviratne
The mermaid bowl was my favourite. Will definitely come back again to try other menu items. Highly recommend Dear Jervois. A good place for brunch.
Bella Williams
Super disappointing and strange experience. Have been here many many times and the foods always been ok but today everything was off. We were seated at a table outside weren’t given menus or cutlery or water. Had to get menus and water ourselves. We were given no service so we tried to get the attention of who we thought was the manger who looked straight at us and ignored us multiple times. This made us feel unwelcome and awkward. We ordered our food and coffees and all iced coffees came in plastic takeaway cups. The food arrived in a timely manner but was dry and flavourless. Don’t think we’ll be back after such awful service.
BelaIna
It’s one of the nicest places to eat.
The food generally is great in taste and good value of money. The service is nice and environment welcoming.
I would have given to them a 5 star if they didn’t change the amount of the food they put on the table. We are not big volume eaters but we expect to have a reasonable quantity that goes with quality.
My mushrooms were delicious but his chicken salad barely had chicken in it.
It was very beautifully presented but the amount of chicken was a joke.
We ordered it as a main and it looked like had volume but actually you could have all the salad in 4-5 forks.

We had to go for another quick meal nearby because that wasn’t enough.
Matchstick Reviews
I have been here three time and finally I see what the rave is about. I previously had not connected with this place but I think I ordered right and the service was much better. I previously suspected that they didn't cope with the volume of people they attract but today things ran smoothly, so I decided to up the rating to a four. I still need a few more positive experiences to fully change my view as some worrying signs showed last time, but I'm thinking that was just a mere blip.

One thing to note here is their range of gluten free options, which is always a must when me and my partner go out (as she is wheat intolerant).

The service was good this time and the food was delicious, with a much better coffee. I got the savoury waffles and they were rather memorable I am pleased to say (photo below). My partner again got the gluten free waffles and they were much better this time.

Previous comments below:

The service was unfortunately slow, but this isn't much of a gripe as I respect how busy they were on Sunday brunch rush. However, what was disappointing was the fact that they were running out of dishes, meaning that our coffee was served in a takeaway cup and we had to wait too long for water in my opinion. For me however, the food was the biggest let down here. I got smashed avacado on toast, but the toast was not toasted enough and the bread, I found, too sweet. The avocado I thought lacked flavour and the presentation compared to other meals seemed lack lustre. My partner got the gluten free waffles which unfortunately came out with no bacon which is was already meant to have.... But this was rectified. Otherwise they were tasty but again the presentation was not up to the standard we had seen before.

We also noticed that people that came in after us had noticeably smaller portion sizes for their meals, so obviously not only they didn't have enough dishes but they were reducing the sizes of a full price meal because of how busy they were. I find this to be a worrying sign and a mistake made by the kitchen staff here.

Overall I am open to changing my rating and review here as I think there is more potential. However, this time I wasn't too impressed. The food as mentioned was below average, along with the service and some worrying signs poked through with their inability and decisions they came to to cope with the rush.

.................
This experience has now changed my mind and believe this is a great place, we just encountered them at an exceptionally busy time. The service was excellent, and the place was thriving again. The food was delicious and the atmosphere fun. But I can't give it a five because of last time. But once again I don't mind changing.
Bonnie Hu
Food is always 5 star, flavours and presentation are both fantastic. But coffee is always the downside, hope that could be improved in the future.

I feel like the portion size of their meals are a little bit larger than some of the other famous cafes I ordered the matcha waffles and my friend got the Soba noodles with salmon. We also got a side of shoestring fries served with aioli. The soba noodles makes a great light lunch dish with generous servings of salmon. The waffles were sweet and the matcha flavour wasn’t too overwhelming. It makes a great breakfast dish for a sweet-tooth like myself, and it was pretty large. The coconut ice cream was delicious and the presentation was gorgeous! The place is small but doesn’t have that squashed in a table feeling at all – and the workers were great!
Ieseon
I love the food here, last two times I have ordered the vegan tacos and they are sooo good! Well made and delicious. However I tried their red velvet latte last time and that was ok, don’t really recommend it but their matcha latte was pretty good. Nice ambience but a very busy place so it can get loud and although a lot staff working, you still have to wait for a bit for their attention. They are nice but they are running off their feet! But otherwise good food!
FoodiesTable
Good food and good coffee. Service staff was nice and friendly but service speed was a bit slower than we expected. Not a big fan of the hash brown in big breakfast.
Mihir Patel
I had an amazing brunch here. My eggs benedict were so tasty and perfectly cooked 10/10. Good environment, location and very friendly staff.

Great food and coffee, sitting out on a busy street killed the mood a bit! Interesting menu with many healthy options. Will come again, but sit inside!
Maggie Yun-ni Chiang
Yummy food and awesome atmosphere :) can definitely tell why dear jervois is one of the top cafes in auckland. The portions were huge! Unlike the pretentious new hip cafes that doesn’t fill me up. Loved the mushroom on toast, super yummy!
Tia Lindbom
Love the atmosphere of the place, super cool and the menu great! My friends also all loved the place and there food. I ordered one of the waffles that said it came with banana and bacon (nothing else was mentioned). When it arrived it was covered in grapes and raspberries which were not mentioned once in the menu. Unfortunately these happen to be the two fruits I am severely allergic too. Thus meaning I was unable to eat my lovely decorated waffles. Note to self I have to mention this everywhere I go even if it doesn’t mention it 😁👍🏼 I would come back here again but ensure I mention my allergies regardless of your menu.
Filteredfoodie
Decided to give this place a try for brunch out with a friend after reading all the positive reviews. Service was above average as we were very quickly seated despite that the cafe had already been packed with people when we arrived. I had the savoury waffles but maybe it is just due to personal preference that I didn’t enjoy eating it. My friend had the matcha waffles and those were a bit better. The unicorn white chocolate hot chocolate was overly sweet which made it hard to drink. The prices are pretty reasonable considering they give relatively big servings. Very shameful because it seemed like such a nice, lively cafe - may go again to try something different.
AngryWhenHungry
Love the food, love the service and super love the coffee. The food is a bit pricey but it was worth it. Even on a busy weekend, staff are always friendly.

Came in for brunch today. Ordered a mermaid bowl, unicorn white hot chocolate and herb waffles. Mermaid bowl was super large and really filling. The yoghurt part had an extremely strong blueberry taste to it and bananas tasted real fresh. Unicorn white hot chocolate tasted like plain milk at the bottom but the top had sprinkles and marshmallows so it was quite sweet. Waffles were flavourful but a bit too soggy from the sauce for me. The sauce was really delicious though. Service was good and environment was relaxing.
Ruby
Been here a few times before and it was great, today not so much. The service was fine but the food, not so much. After being denied my request for dietary requirements (dairy free scrambled eggs, not hard) our meals came with terrible, hard poached eggs and another part of the order wrong. Food was average and just disappointing 😔
Jewel
Simple restaurant with nice food. We was lucky to had lunch here today. We enjoyed our food. I had smashed avocado with poached eggs and toasted, bread yummy I like it soft and have a little bit sweet taste. Next time will try different dishes. Coffee was very good.
Ron Goh
Order the creamy mushroom for breakfast. Probably the most unenjoyable and saltiest breakfast I ever had. Generous portion of mushroom with bacon that tasted like anchovies to me. I think would be better to have the bacon serve separately on top of the mushroom. The manager didn’t ask me how was the food. Another overrated cafe in Auckland.
EddyBear
Writing this review purely because I need to let the world know how amazing the savoury waffles are. Seriously some of the best I’ve had - not all dry and stodgy like they’ve just been defrosted, but pillowy and delicious - super tasty sauce, and the pork Katsu was perfect too - the crumb was crisp and not soggy, and the meat was good quality. Service was prompt and very friendly. Only downside was the unicorn hot choc looked pretty but was a little bland in taste - but given that it’s probably actually meant for kids, they’ll almost certainly love it. I’ll definitely be back.
Camilla Dadson
Good strong coffee. Savoury muffin was filled with sweet chutney - the first time I have every encountered this. My companion didn't enjoy hers but I found it ok. A bit overpriced though.
Kathleen
We had the Best Poke Bowl I have ever tasted ❤️ great service , staff friendly and helpful and food delicious!! So worth the drive out for lunch can’t wait to get back there !
Vita
A relatively nice atmosphere and lovely staff will draw you into this eatery which caters for vegetarians and vegans as well.

I ordered a matcha latte as a drink which was nicely made and blended well. For food, we got the vegan macro bowl and the creamy mushroom.

The vegan macro bowl was good, not great. It had a little bit of everything, sauerkraut, lotus root, Tofu, alfalfa but there was no sauce to pull all the ingredients together. Hence, it tasted rather bland. The black quinoa rice served with it was really dry and chewy, probably a bit overcooked.

The creamy mushroom was nice and flavourful but the sauce was rather thin and not creamy. It had bits of bacon which enhanced the flavour and the bread served with the meal was soft so you could mop up every morsel. But the sauce itself was a let down.

Would I recommend coming here? Sure. Overall, the service was good and the ingredients in the food is good quality. I will probably come back to perhaps try one of their sweeter dishes.

I remember this cafe used to be one of my favourites a few years back, before I went overseas. I was super keen to go back when I came back home this time.

The cafe was extremely busy. We were seated outside at the back of the restaurant where it was just far too cold.
Match latte and Red Velvet Latte was waaaaaaay too bland! Literally just tasted like extremely diluted milk? The waffles tasted really strange as the sweet waffles didn’t compliment the savoury katsu at all. The burger was nothing special. The Poke bowl salad... I found when i got to the rice part there wasnt enough sauce so it was just very bland.... The breakfast mushroom dish was alright, but got a bit too creamy after a few bites.

Was feeling quite lost as I was very disappointed this time... don’t think I’ll be returning for a while.... maybe once menu has changed?
The service was very average too, except for the man at the til!

Mrs Fihaki
Great place, great coffee! Didn’t wait long for our orders to arrive. Loved the mayonnaise that came with the fries - it had this familiar soya sauce type of taste... sounds odd but pretty yum! Service was fab 🙌🏽
Sofija
Absolutely amazing food. I have tried the mermaid bowl and vegan tacos and I really enjoyed both meals. The smoothies are nice as well, although a bit pricy. Sometimes it can be quite noisy, but overall a wonderful cafe.
Darren Big Belly
There’s nothing bad to say about this place so 5 stars it deserves.
Food was served with reasonable time and it was quite good. Coffee was good. Service was good.
I will go back again soon.

5/5

Wonderful cafe, friendly and easy going staff, we were able to walk in and with a short wait got our table. They catered well for kids too, definitely up there with highly regarded cafes in Auckland, would recommend.

Dear Jervois has always been on my list of places to go - the service was awesome! Smiley happy employees ready to serve my friend and I as soon as we walked through the door. The food came out quick and at the same time. My friends meal (vege burger) looked great and apparently was really nice and my meal (salmon poke bowl) looked great but was a little boring but otherwise the meal as a whole was nice
Trang Tran
Love love love this cafe! One of my faves 🙌🏼 The zucchini fritter was sooo delicious, I devoured the whole dish and it was biiig! Matcha Waffles was probably the best waffles I’ve ever had. I’d recommend sharing the waffle dish as it is quite heavy and bit much to have on your own. If you’re not a fan of matcha then I wouldn’t order this dish as the matcha is quite prominent! Smoothie bowl was very ave, wouldn’t order that again but defs the other two dishes. Flat white coffees & matcha latte was amazing 😋
Kate
Amazing customer service, staff are friendly. The food looked amazing and tasted yum. The only thing I'd complain about is the uncomfortable seating outside
Foooodie Explorer
Came here for brunch today and ordered the matcha waffles and dj complete and both looked and tasted good. The waffles were almost too pretty to eat. Would totally come back to this place. Highly recommended.
T
heartiest granola on the block hands down! not only is the food top notch but the staff are super laidback and attentive as well! this place deserves all the hype it gets and more...will be back for sure! 🤟🏽
Ms. Piggy Loves Food
Can't say I love the place. Coffee was meh.. It was a cold and rainy day and I came for breakfast. Tried the acai bowl..everything looked too heavy to digest so early in the morning.
Liz Bradley
Always satisfying, and such healthy food! Substantial portions and very tasty too. The kitchen is always happy to tweak their dishes too. Chloe the barista makes the best mocha I have ever tasted, rich, creamy, not too sweet and full of flavour. If you're lucky you'll be served by Rob who has the most wonderful, colourful style.
Bon
Absolutely delicious!!! Seemed healthy too! Only little minor critique is the price, but being in Ponsonby I guess that can't be helped.....
Angela
Can’t find the photos I have :( I’ve been here a few times and usually go for their granola. Super yummy and presented really nicely. It’s always really busy so would recommend going on a weekday. The waiters were really nice too - my friend lost her Invisalign and they helped us look for ages!
Margot Vildósola
Sometimes you have to wait for a while to get a table but it's totally worth it. Everything I've tried in this restaurant is really good, it's a great option for brunch.
Lucy Wilson
Amazing staff, plesent environment very cozy but also quite funky. Food was outstanding, heaps of choices, great variety of vegetarian meals. Would come again.
Michelle M
I've been here a couple of times and it's always crazy busy! A nice atmosphere, great prompt service and I highly recommend the avocado on rye! The only issue is both times people I was with ordered poached eggs and they came out too overdone but other than that, great food.

My menus had bird poop on them.

Not very hygienic.

The pancakes were nice, eggs and chorizo good too. But in my mind I couldn’t get over the dirty menus.

Service: 2/5 (very busy understaffed had to wait a long time)
Environment: 3/5
Food Quality: 4/5
Food Quantity: 4/5
Presentation: 0/5
Price per person: $20-$30

Vegan and vegetarian paradise, they have ample non-vegetarian options but bring a vegetarian I was surprised and took ages to decide what I would like to have (vegetarian options are limited almost everywhere my partner and I go). Huge filling meals, very busy on Sunday afternoon. Raw and beautiful.

Great cafe in Herne Bay! Coffee 5/5! We had brunch here and food was exceptional and staff very friendly thank you! We were even given a free glass of champagne!

Came here this weekend, ordered a variety of meals, some vegan/GF, some meat based, some kids meals, 6 of us were eating..... it was great. Lovely, friendly staff, a great selection of food on the menu and a lovely atmosphere.

I had the vegan macro bowl and it was beautiful, fresh, simple ingredients, put together beautifully and well thought out. Each flavour complimented the other perfectly. I LOVED this meal. Each of us dining really enjoyed what we had chosen, the kids meals were lovely and my husband had a hamburger that he said was very good.
My only criticism was the green tea! I asked for plain, green tea, I said no flavouring, just simple, pure green tea. I was given this weird flavoured drink that tasted like marzipan and was foul with dinner, (it may have been OK after eating as it was sweet). It turned out that it was almond macaroon green tea... and thats all they stock.+
It seemed very odd that with all the selection of things that they had they couldnt just add green tea to the menu as well as the flavoured one. Most people I know just want plain green tea, so I was disappointed that they didnt have that.
The manager came out and explained they only had that one, but he would give it to me on the house... but then took it away... so it wasnt really on the house, Just not charging me for something I never ordered in the first place!
But hey, thats pretty minor considering how nice the restaurant was in all other areas. The price was quite expensive, but no more than anywhere else in Auckland, and it was worth the money as the quality of food was lovely.

Came here on Monday for brunch.
The interiors impose a very rustic, urbane and sophisticated vibe.
We got the poke bowl with salmon and the savoury herb waffles with donkatsu pork.
Food came relatively fast; bowls were still warm.

The poke bowl was generously portioned with beautifully marinated salmon and avocado on a bed of warm black rice and quinoa, topped with seaweed. However I feel that there could be something extra to elevate the texture and flavours.
The waffles were good! Cooked to perfection with a crispy outer and warm, soft and fluffy inner. It was a interesting yet unique play between the mildly milky-sweetness of the waffles and the saltiness of the herbs and hoisin sauce. The pork cutlet itself was amazingly crispy and crunchy and the meat was juicy and succulent. They have a few waffles to select from which is always good!

Service was very friendly, all the staff smiling at you and making eye contact as they walk and observe around. The guy with glasses and a blonde ponytail was especially bubbly and friendly!

Overall I would come back again to try their other dishes. This set us back by ~$61 for 2, with smoothie and extra avocado.

Food: 8/10
Price: 8/10
Ambience: 9/10
Service: 9/10

Went here with a friend and ordered the avocado toast without feta and added some vegetables to it! The bread was excellent and eggs were poached well. Would say it was a simple tasting dish, but any lack of flavour was made up for just by the bread alone! My friend also enjoyed her vegan macro bowl and found the serving size perfectly filling. Did feel that the prices are a bit steep for what we were given, but in terms of the area the prices do make sense!

If you love waffles this is the best place to get it. Every time I come here I usually order the Gluten-free waffles because I just cannot get enough of it! You cannot even tell that it’s gluten-free, which does not have to make you feel so guilty about yourself.

Also a new thing that I am recently obsessed with is the Kimchi fried rice, don’t have to add the extra beef or avocado because it is already bursting with so many flavours already! Definitely would recommend that dish.

Coffees and hot chocolates here never fail to make me satisfied, although I’m not too fond of their iced coffees. Seems to be too much ice which makes it crunchy to drink and not enough of the coffee or milk itself. However aside from that I would absolutely come back here again!
Auckland Foodie
Very friendly staff and the food is not only super delicious but is also so pretty! I ordered the Poke Bowl which was so yummy. Also had a red velvet latte which looked nice but probably not my favorite. Such an awesome cafe though!
Lizzie
Definitely one of my all-time favourite cafes in Auckland. The staff is friendly, never have to wait for more than 20 minutes for a table, the menu is delicious, I try something new everytime I come and the fries are on another level! Love this place so much and highly recommend to everyone! The staff is always so friendly as well which is a plus!

Amazing food and coffee in the heart of Ponsonby, Auckland City. Highly recommend the salmon poke bowl (with avocado, seaweed and picked ginger) 👌🏼😋

I had been meaning to check out Dear Jervois for two years now and I finally got the chance! Came in on a Sunday morning just before 11 for a birthday brunch and it was quite busy. We went in and got told it would be a 10 minute wait for a table which we were fine with. And were surprisingly seated within 5 mins!

As always, I had checked the menu beforehand so I had a better idea of what kind of food I would be able to try, and I can honestly say that the number of vegetarian options surprised me! There were at least 5 different kinds of vege meals to suit either a savoury or sweet tooth. I got the pink waffles, while my friends got the vege tacos, avo on toast, mushroom and potato rosti stack, vege burger, and an eggs bene. Everyone liked their meals, and service was great as staff were attentive. After we finished our meals we had brought a cake that we wanted to cut for my friend and staff were really nice about making sure we got enough side plates and cutlery which was awesome!

The meals could have done with slightly more flavour, but otherwise it was a really good experience!

I didn’t particularly love the dish I ordered (DJ complete). The items were all good individually but they weren’t quite right together.
I wanted to come back and try something else which I did, and left more disappointed than on my first visit. I had the breakfast taco which nowhere in the description says that the scrambled eggs would be absolutely covered in chili flakes. The chorizo was so spicy it upset my stomach as well. I probably won’t be going back a third time.
Hannah.milne11
Second time at this place and the food was as good as the last visit, I got the vegan taco and it was delicious and refreshing and filled the spot for breakfast. I also ordered a turmeric latte with almond milk and it was super tasty and not to strong!

Had a delicious brunch here a few days ago!

I had the mushrooms which came with lentils and a potato rosti. All the ingredients worked super well together - can't fault a thing. My friend had the eggs bene and she loved it too. We also tried the lemon meringue cake from the cabinet - I found it dry and disappointing but my friend liked it!

Would definitely come here again

Great cafe! Love the half size eggs bennie! Coffee is great, with a dedicated barista. This cafe has seating outside and dog friendly...recommended!

Dead Jervois is a well-established brunch/lunch spot in Auckland. We came on an early Tuesday afternoon (public holiday) and it was very busy. There were heaps of street parking nearby so finding a parking space is not a problem.

Ambience: The cafe was very roomy with lots of lighting. I like the set up of the place. We did have to share a big table with another group but it was fine given how crowded DJ was. The place was busy but not overly noisy so you could still talk to each other.

Service: Super efficient and friendly. All the waitresses/waiters who came to our table were attentive and polite. Although we did have to wait a while for the food, it was worth it.

Food: Excellent. We got Matcha waffles, Breakfast Tacos and Mushroom/Potato rosti stack. Mine was the breakfast tacos. It was deconstructed i think, it’s not your usual perfectly wrapped individual tacos but the tacos shelves were soft and open, underneath a big omelette, avocado, tons of chorizo and sour cream. I found it very fulfilling and nicely executed. Everything tasted delicious separately and together. My friends all loved their dishes as well. I got to try the mushroom and potato rosti stack, and it was sublime, yet it was very simple dish. All three dishes were plated beautifully, making you want to dive in.

Overall, DJ really lives up to its reputation. Would definitely come back for more goodness.

Consistently reliable local for Herne Bay with great coffee and a truly interesting menu.
The savory pork waffle is worth the visit alone!
Busy all weekend but try and sneak in before the crowds

gluten free waffles were yummy as were the nutella pancakes however quite sweet, good snoothies and scones. service was great and food came out really fast

Exciting café with delicious food.

I came to Dear Jervois with my family and were promptly seated by a lovely lady with a warm smile. Our table was clean and where we sat in the cafe was cosy and had lovely decorations, creating a chill and pleasant atmosphere. The menus were made out of reused/recycled paper and very easy to read/locate food.

Everything looked delicious on the menu and also at a reasonable price. We ordered 'Mushrooms & Potato Rosti Stack', 'Brian (beef) Burger', 'Poke Bowl with pork' and 'Savoury Waffles'. The food came at a reasonable time, and were in decent portions and presented beautifully. We tried each others food and everything tasted delicious!

My only "negatives" about this place which lowered my rating from a perfect 5 to a 4.5 are: there were a couple of flies around and also a pigeon walked in past us at one point; and we thought the portion size to plate ratio for the waffles was a bit off (half of the plate had food, while the other half was empty with a bit of icing sugar).

A further mention of the place's decor: I liked the artwork, plants and fairy lights in this place. Dear Jervois had a lovely theme going on. Even the bathroom and corridor leading to it was decorated and very clean.

Recommendations: Honestly everything on the menu looks great and you can't go wrong with choosing anything!

Love the half size Benny Eggs. Good coffee plus friendly service. Modern décor. Takeaway coffee can take a wee while if your happy to wait if they're busy.

Went for lunch today and was looking forward to my meal after hearing great things. Unfortunately the waiter didn’t place our order and we were left waiting for an hour. When my salad arrived the greens were soggy - not a good experience. Sad

Had brunch at Dear Jervois at around 12pm and it was quite packed however my friends and I managed to get a spot down in the courtyard. One of my friends ordered a pancake stack and a soy mocha while another friend ordered matcha waffles as did I with a Super Berry smoothie. The service from the waiters and waitresses was friendly however they did seem to take some time when it came to getting our food on the table. The Super Berry smoothie I ordered was delicious and was flavoursome as was the matcha waffles however I felt that the waffles were a bit dry but the presentation was superb. My friend complained that her mocha seemed distasteful which somewhat made our experience at Dear Jervois a little bit on the off side. Overall, I gave Dear Jervois a rating of 4.0.
Luke Bilbrough
Definitely a lot of people in Nikes and active wear eating Eggs Benedict. But if you can brave this scene then you will find Dear Jervois a hip little place with outside searing and quality coffee.

We chose the breakfast taco and the eggs Benedict because sometimes it's good to be basic.

The taco was deconstructed, it was light and had a great variety of flavours but for just under $20 it just wasn't enough and I left still hungry.

Eggs Benedict didn't match the high level of what I'm used to in Auckland either. Nice but just nothing special.

The ambiance is really good here though and the wait staff are polite so definitely give this place a try.
With high ratings on Zomato, I decided to drop by to try their coffee! Ordered a cappuccino, a spinach and feta cheese muffin, and a lemon meringue. Certainly hired a skilled barista here, seeing as my coffee was creamy. Since I'm more used to strong coffee (as in keeping me energised for a couple of hours), I don't think this cafe delivered that. I wonder what coffee bean roastery they use? Supreme? Allpress? Rocket? Their coffee would suit light coffee drinkers. I gave their Spinach and Feta cheese Muffin a try, and this definitely exceeded my expectations! I would give them a 5/5! Their lemon meringue dessert however, wasn't outstanding or anything special. You could get better ones from a bakery/supermarket. Maybe I'll try their all day breakfast/lunch meals next time!

Went here for Labour Day breakfast and was told that we didn't have to book as it won't be busy. We ended up waiting for 15 mins. The food overall was very delicious and good portion sizes. Definitely would go back, however you should account the waiting time to be seated.
Nathalie
Dined here for breakfast on labour day and the place was packed. We had to wait 15mins to get a table staff were very friendly and attentive and the place was crowded but lots of room to move around. Our order took 20mins-25mins to arrive (5people) however they all came at the same time. Dishes were yum especially the gluten free waffles, all dishes were well presented and their coffee was also good. Overall its what you’d expect around the area good quality brunch, lovely staffs and nice ambiance.
Vinny
Amazing!!! Got the eggs bene with bacon. Was superb. Friendly wait staff too.

I forgot to take a picture, we ordered gluten free waffles, vegan macro, beef burger and poke bowl! Omg it’s delicious af! And all of their staffs as well, i mean not delicious but nice and lovely!!!! I can’t wait to go back there next time - see you again dear jervois

This place has been hyped up so I was really excited to finally go and try it for myself! I ordered the GF matcha waffles and my friend ordered eggs and avo on toast.
The service wasn't too bad, we were seated quickly but had to wait for our order to be taken. The place was packed even at 9.00am on a Sunday morning so the wait was understandable.
The food came in good time and mine was pretty tasty - it didn't taste GF at all! I also ordered a tumeric latte which was thick and yucky to drink - I asked the waitstaff if they could make it again, which they did. Unfortunately, it was no better. Must've been the paste they use but it didn't blend in with the milk and separated which was not pleasant to drink.
Overall I enjoyed my experience and would go back. I would say it's been hyped up more than it's worth.
Rohit Victor
What an overpacked/ crowded but great place for catch ups, brunch, lunch and/ or dinner! The staff only had smiles, service was impeccable, they were able to accomodate us even though we had no booking and food was presented so beautifully.

We ordered the Breakfast Taco, Matcha Waffles, Eggs Benedict and Pancakes with Banana & Nutella as well as juice and a Peanut Butter & Blueberry smoothie.

I enjoyed it and will definitely be coming back!
Amy Fhl
It's so perfect. One of the best pancakes I have had. We ordered a breakfast taco and a pancake stack. They are just delicious! No other words! I brought my family here and they said it's the best brunch they ever had. The rating is real! We also had a brownie and cookie s'more. Haven't tried but they do look awesome. I imagine they would taste the same. Decor is very nice too! They even have a dog parking. How adorable is that?
Hana
We visited Dear Jervois for lunch today after hearing great things! The decor is really trendy although the acoustics make for a really noisey space. We ordered coffees first however our friends coffee order took over 20minutes while we got ours in 5mins. The meals were good, high quality and presented well, however none of our meals were hot which took away from what could have been a really delicious lunch.

We left a little disappointed and wouldn't go out of our way to visit again, for the price we paid there are plenty of other cafes in Auckland that provide better food and service.
Whitney-Dee Bawden
Have heard excellent things about dear jervois from friends so we decided to give it a whirl. Service was excellent and very fast (we arrived at about 8:30 on a Sunday so not quite peak)
Food was good - I had the pancake stack and my partner had the creamy mushrooms (he added the sausage )
We will be back to try the waffles and the mince
Hansi Dissanayake
Would go again, buzzing on Saturday morning and even though it was packed service was quick and great. Food was good, a little bit pricey but the pancakes were definitely worth it. Great coffee as well.
Maria Chen
Poke bowl and matcha waffles are amazing. The drinks are not very memorable. However the food and ambience is enough to make me wana go back for some hearty food and good chats with friends.
Abbey Lissaman
Love the ginger latte, absolutely recommend it and I will 100% be back for another.
Food is awesome too! I think they changed their menu a bit since I was here last but it's fantastic and sounds super healthy and super duper delicious. I literally wanted to try almost everything on the menu!
The vegan tacos I had were great, just enough yummy veggie elements so I was full even without meat in it. The tortillas were a little disappointingly crusty and could have some improvement but other than that I enjoyed it very much.
I think the prices here reflect the lovely ingredients rather than the portion sizes, but I still think it's a great cafe for brunch or lunch and a delicious hot drink or a smoothie to fill a gap.
If I lived closer I'd come here often!

I'm obsessed with nice brunch lately, just love this place, nice food, nice smoothie~~ I has the zucchini fritter, absolutely love it~~ We were catching up with a bunch of girl friends, had a quiet corner spot down stairs, so we can chat~~ It was so busy though, the staff forget to give us hot water for my friends' lemon ginger, asked 3 times...

The service here was good, apart from the fact that they forgot our order. But they gave us free drinks and a free blueberry muffin with butter. The waitress was really nice and apologetic.
The matcha waffles were absolutely delicious. Definitely worth the hype. The presentation was also beautiful. They went really well with the matcha latte.
Highly recommended cafe if you ever find yourself in Herne bay.
Forkingfamished
Tried this as it had such a high rating. Coffee was great. Snoothie was delicious. But our balsamic mushrooms were bland and had too many onions for my liking. Husband had the beef burger which was nice but the extra $4 we paid for hand cut fries for precisely 8 chips was not good value. And one of our group wanted the pancake stack but we were told we don't do these on a Sunday! Disappointing as was the daughter's birthday and she wanted pancakes. We were told we could have them off the kids menu but we declined that offer as she is 20yrs old. I don't like being critical but we didnt have the meal we thought we would.

Absolutly delicious was so exited for the pancake but that omelette just wanting me to go there everyday. My friend came from wellington she said she's not gonna like breakfast in Wellington after she ate that.😋😋
We went for breakfast mid weekThe meals were nicely presented and tasted great. Food 4/5
The coffee, however, was too rich for all of us- would not get a coffee with my breakfast again 0/5
The food was quite expensive for the portion size.
The room was cold and the music a bit loud Ambience: 2/5
The service was fine
This could be a one off as it was our first visit there
Ethan Pakii
The local spot for Sunday breakfast. Eggs Benedict was class. Kiwi version of a 'Full English' was superb as well. Especially the potato hash cake. Delight! Little pricey but will not disappoint.

Vegan Tacos are amazing
Eggs Benedict quite standard but well presented . Plenty of options for vegetarians and vegan. Good service . Good atmosphere.

Went here on Queen's Birthday for lunch and it was very busy! My friends and I had the salmon lox bagel, matcha waffles, and the pancake stack.

Salmon lox bagel - I found it very nice with the generous amount of smashed avo and cream spread on the bagel! The capers were not too salty as well. I found it quite filling which made me happy :)

Matcha waffles - Overall it was okay. I found it a little bit dry and I was expecting a little more matcha flavour.

Pancake stack - The pancake stack was quite nice with the nutella sauce and berries. The creme fraiche was really rich with a buttery flavour.

Coffee - I was quite disappointed with the coffee here though. I had the chai latte but it was one of the worst I've had. My friends agreed that coffee here wasn't special and was very very very VERY average.

Overall the food here was nice with quality presentation! The overall atmosphere and interior was quite appealing and the service was good.

First time I went there they didn't greet me or anything and it was so busy. But the cafe looks amazing and love the food! Gonna check it out soon probably when I think it's not busy

One of my favorite cafes in herne bay! Food and coffees are always delicious. Good service, nice and friendly staff. Never seem to disappoint. Best part is the smaller corner with toys for children. Helps parents enjoy at least a 15min uninterrupted lunch.
Love their creamy mushroom and that they do half size eggs benedict. Perfect for mums who have no time to enjoy a full size meal.
Dineaandwine
Amazing customer service. The staff literally made my day. They all are sooo amazing and so kind. I can't really put into words how impressed I was with the food and the amazing customer service. W

Fairly low rating based on service and ambience. This place has a very creative design and layout, including food and coffee presentation, and great quality coffee. I came on a Weds late morning and although it wasn't busy when I walked in it took me awhile to find someone to help me to a table, and service was noticeably slow. Not what I expected based on the reviews, unsure if I will try again, it was also quite noisy as soon as it started filling up. Might try sitting outside if I go again.

This is my favourite place to go for weekend brunch. We have been here several times already. It's always packed though, so sometimes hard to get a good seat. Their menu changes seasonally, so there is always something new to try. The eggs bene with salmon is the best dish I've had from here. Simply can't fault it. The soba noodles salad is really refreshing and full of flavour. Have also had the matcha waffles. They were a little doughey, but the flavour and accompaniments were spot on. Staff are friendly and despite the croud, the meals don't take too long to get to the table.
Donna&Shane
It's a busy place but big enough and open enough not to feel too crowded... although some people can be very noisy! came here for breakfast got seated straight away on a shared table...the menu is interesting that I definately want to come back and try something else. Service is friendly and we didn't wait too long for our meals, coffee took longer!! We had potato rosti with portobello mushrooms with slowed cooked eggs... really nice just missing piece of the rye that I had to go with it. I had the smashed avocado on rye with bacon... nice too except the bacon wasn't cooked enough for me and really should have a lot more avocado as it's the main feature...

We went to Dear Jervois for the first time today. Firstly they were 15 minutes late opening but we waited as we were keen to go there. Unfortunately it was not a good experience. Firstly my egg was not cooked and had to be sent back. The yolk was completely runny and the white was also translucent- so absolutely not cooked. Then I found a long curly hair in my rosti. SO BAD. When I told the waitress she said sorry but clearly she couldn't have cared less. Never going back. There is just not enough care. The others at the table thought their breakfasts were ok but nothing special.
Jen De Jongh
Amazing smoothies, especially blueberry peanut butter. The service could be better but they were very busy so not a huge complaint there. Matcha waffles with nice cream were a hit along with the avo on toast.
Carina Chang
the place always busy. Lucky us got seated when we arrived there. waiters are busy so probably you need to ask for water, pepper, salt or something. their omelete was good, lots salmon on it and its too much for girls, my friend didn't eat them all. But my one was quite disappointing, I ordered avocado on rye with poached egg, which is quite normal but they didn't make it good. The rye bread are actually tasted sweet, but the topping is salty food, they weren't match, tasted wired.
We both tried their matcha latte and betroot latte, both r great.
Leonardo Law
Heard about this place from a friend. The place has a fantastic vibe. It looked pretty busy but we did not have to wait long at all to find a table. Excellent service!
ShoRt
Loving the natural light and decor of this place. I also love their waffles! Thick, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Tried the gluten free one and man it was good! Just enough maple syrup drizzled over the top.

Unfortunately I thought the amount of bacon was quite stingy.... Just two small pieces for 4 quarters of waffle? Not good enough given I paid $20 for it. Coffee also tasted over extracted.

But their menu looks like there is a real fusion thing going on....so maybe will give it another shot? Mm....
Aleana Fernando
Went here for lunch and it was relatively busy but didn't have to wait for a table since there was just two of us.

Service is really good and the staff are nice. Food came at a good amount of time. Food is priced okay, but not surprised since most cafe items are not that cheap.
I ordered the kimchi fried rice and my friend got the matcha waffles and also an iced chocolate.

The kimchi fried rice was really bland and I had to put a lot of salt and pepper, didn't really get the kimchi taste which is a shame because I love making Korean fried rice at home. I appreciated the two poached eggs, they weren't really runny but I don't really mind that.

Both me and my friend found the waffles really really dry and took awhile to actually get it down. There's a scoop of ice cream to help but it wasn't enough to get over the dryness. Matcha flavour was there but could be a bit more.

The iced chocolate was super delicious and refreshing. But a shame that the best part of the meal was a drink.

The menu of this place look interesting enough to come back again and try other items but definitely disappointed with the food the first time.

I_like_pickles
Friendly staff. Nice dining area. Place can get very loud and busy, so not the best place for a catch up or conversation. The cuisine here is fusion but I would say it is catered more towards the western palate.

Thumbs up:
Drinks were nice. Helpful staff.
Presentation of food is stunning.

Thumbs down:
Food took awhile to be served.
If you have a smaller group(less than 4) be prepared to share a table.

I came here on the way to picking up dad from work after finishing his nightshift quite late one time. Thought it might be a good idea to get something to make me stay fully awake. And no coffee was not the answer, the energy of sweetness from their Hot Chocolate did the trick, tasted really good with that rich taste of the chocolate.

The service was really kind and friendly, despite having being just opened in the early hours of the morning it was not as busy. Which I managed to get my hot chocolate a lot quicker.

Entering the cafe it has that artisan/vintage feel, considering the run down walls, plant vines growing on the walls and different chair design. But that's all part of the experience in design, which I think they did a really good job at keeping this place looking original.

YUMMIEST. POKE. BOWL!!!!!

This morning, I finally got the chance to have breakfast at Dear Jervois. My friend ordered the portebello & rosti stack and I went for the poke bowl (strange breakfast, I know 😛🤘🏽 but it was the right choice).

My dish came on a quinoa bed and had a seaweed salad, ginger, avo and fresh salmon. The spring onion was a perfect compliment to the flavours. Honestly, I can't fault it. Along with my breakfast, I ordered a turmeric latte.

The menu is extensive and unique. The staff were friendly and helpful. Food comes promptly. I highly recommend paying Dear Jervois a visit. The trickiest part is picking a dish because everything on the menu sounds ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!!!! 5/5 ⭐️

Our favourate breakfast or coffee place to come to in the weekend. Its always very busy, friendly staff. Amazing selection of food and their coffee is the best. Got to see Jason Statham and his wife? There too. Recommended

Excellent vegan and veg options here, a lot more so than most place. The service is fast and efficient and the look of the place is attractive. I had the vegan taco and it was both filling and delicious! My only criticism is that some of the staff aren't the friendliest. I would return however!

Friggggnnnnn goooood shit , bloooody delicious. Best hollandaise and best poach eggs omg. Lovely staff too, and an absolutely great range of coffee to order. Yum yum yum

New cafes are popping up seemingly daily in Auckland. Though that should not be a threat to those that deliver consistently good food and service and clearly it hasn't had too much of an effect on Dear Jervois, which always seems busy.

Dear Jervois certainly did not disappoint on my first visit. Their gluten free waffles were delicious (and this comes from someone who thinks gluten free is synonymous with yuck) as were the balsamic mushrooms. The service was outstanding - I was particularly impressed after I brought an issue with the food to the staffs attention they apologised and replaced the dish and also removed it from our bill. It is always nerve-wracking to approach staff when something isn't quite right, but I really don't feel it could have been handled any better.

My one complaint would be the iced coffee. I'm fairly particular about how I like my iced coffee, so I always make sure to ask how it's made so I'm not disappointed. Unfortunately, it was watery and fairly tasteless. My partner's iced mocha was better, but still quite watery.

Would definitely return for the great food and service (our waitress from Finland was lovely).

Went with family to celebrate my Anniversary and based on the ratings, arrived with great expectations. The wait was really long but the food was good, and presentation was lovely. My mother-in - law's kimchi fried rice was slightly bland but my prawn dumpling soup was quite delicious. My husband's soba noodle salad was a smaller helping than I thought it should be. The deconstructed Korean burger was my family's favourite!
The only thing I found a bit disappointing was that the staff was nowhere to be found, one of the girls literally made eye contact and ignored me, instead to telling me to wait, or that she'll get someone to come over. The staff definitely looked harried and couldn't be bothered being polite either. I did notice the girl being reprimanded later for something else (maybe she was having a bad day), so the manager is definitely trying his best to ensure things run smoothly. But one thing is for sure, I'll certainly be back for the iced chocolate! Good job guys!

This husk lunch was sans-Lou and sans-Mel due to sick-children and Fiji-frolicking (respectively), though pretty sure we'll have to bring'em back though' Boasting shelves of greenery, copper pipes and industrial lighting, every corner feels like a different location. We loved the staff's get-up with khaki aprons, black & white striped tops and black skinnys - chic! Oh, and the food ' up there with Rad and L'oeuf, we'll let the reviews speak for itself. Only let down is the noise level ' we had to yell into each other ears across the petite tables. Time to branch out to Kingsland we think? *nudge nudge*

Check out our individual comments here: husk.co.nz/lunches/dear-jervois-aug-2014

Situated in lovely Herne Bay, Dear Jervois is everything you'd fancy from from a up-town, chic and high quality establishment. Having lived in London recently, this definitely gave the rustic-modern vibe akin to great cafes in London. We were welcomed and seated warmly, orders were taken and delivered swiftly and the food was simply outstanding. Coffee, too, was worth a commendable mention as both our latte and iced Americano tasted brilliant. Prices are what you'd expect for such a place but the quality of the entire experience speaks for itself. Highly recommended.

Super cute little cafe in Herne Bay with a very well designed menu - let down by service.
If only the staff could rustle a smile or a snippet of conversation? After attempts to communicate with two waitstaff were dismissed I was left feeling like a naughty school kid who was interrupting the teacher.
The menu is awesome, the options are super but when they arrived they were a little bland. The chicken noodle bowl didn't lack seasoning it lacked flavour (healthy food doesn't mean tasteless food)
Will return in the new year to see how things have changed.

Located at a prime location sorounded by all other premium boutique shops. Food and services were good. Ordered green tea waffles with nicecream. It was good with the ice cream but rather dry on its own. Other than that the dish was beautifully presented and quality ingredients were used.
Tastebud Tingles
Almost every dish on the menu is a winner. Large portions, adequate service and a good setting. The popularity of this café speaks for itself as a slight wait is expected.

I highly suggest you treat yourself to something from the front cabinet when you grab a coffee - it will make your day. Vegan Apple Crumble Cookie was soft, chewy & sensational - cardamon-ey, cinnamon-ey & nutmeggy: i was impressed

Omelette - the best & fluffiest texture, w tasty capers in the mix. I wish i could make this goodness at home but i can't. Chef has definitely mastered the art of sizzling eggs on the pan.

Soba Noodle Salad - zingy and Japanesey.

Beef burger - insanely satisfying if you have the hunger for it.

Super Berry Smoothie - delicious and healthy too. As someone who regularly makes smoothies herself, I was not disappointed.

Overall, I'd say this was good but not fantastic. We came here on a Saturday afternoon, and waited for about 10 minutes to be seated which was reasonable. We ordered two cappuccinos and a matcha latte first up - I was very disappointed with the matcha latte - it seemed to be watered down and had an odd cinnamon-like taste to it. I can't speak for the cappuccino but apparently it was good. In terms of food, we had the portobello mushrooms, the chicken salad and the chorizo/squid salad. Presentation was top notch and taste was excellent. The bacon in particular was especially scrumptious and I would recommend all three dishes. What I have to fault however is the very quite average service - we had to ask twice and wait 20 odd minutes for water, which really should not have been overlooked when the order was taken. However, I'd still love to return to try the more Asian-style dishes.

Heard lots of good things about this place and it definitely did not disappoint! We arrived just after 9.30 which was a good thing cause we didn't have to wait for a table and we missed the rush! The time that we left (around 10.30) the que was out the door! So if you don't want to wait, I suggest go early but the food is definitely worth the wait.

Ok to the food, all I can say is that the matcha waffles were definitely the best waffles I've ever had, they were nice and light and with the added nuts, coconut ice cream and other bits just made it so good! Would definitely come back again for this and to try their other things (they looked good too).
My partner had the eggs bene, they were good but they weren't amazing or anything but there's only so much you can do with this dish so I suggest trying something else here!

Overall good service, fabulous food and would love to come back. Oh and the added bonus was that we saw Jason Statham having his brunch as we were leaving!!
Dear Jervois is my go-to recommendation for a brunch spot in Auckland. The food is truly a work of art and every meal I have had tastes delicious. They have a really great selection of high quality tea. I would also say you truly do get what you pay for, It feel like alot of effort had gone into the menu and ambiance. It is perfect for anyone who has intolerance/allergies or vegan.
Christophe Pereira
Coffee and food were good. The spicy mince packed good flavour. Would recommend booking if possible as it was quiet busy when we arrived. Overall an above average breakfast experience
Jessica
Tried many times to have breakfast here but each time their was a long wait to be seated. But one day I finally had the chance and I can see why there was a wait. It was really good food here, even though it being super busy the food was still good. I had the eggs benedict and super berry smoothie. Service was fine for being very busy. I would happy go back & recommended to anyone who wants a good breakfast in that area. But be prepared to wait a little while cause the locals seem to love this place.
Samantha Gordon
Got the waffles with bacon and also a side of scrambled eggs (cause why not! Love trying the eggs at different cafes). It was absolutely delicious albeit the portion size a little small for what we paid! Great coffee as well!
Ffly
Heard about this place so much, I was excited that I can finally make it there. Can't bypass the beautiful presentation of cruesli and I also ordered turmeric latte. Well cruesli, with full plate of nuts and seeds, I was given only one or two spoons of yogurt, it was way too dry and crumb was too big, it was tough to chew. Turmeric latte was quite weak too, I had it way better somewhere else. Overall really disappointed.
Michelle Hwang
Arrived there at around 11:00 am on last Sunday, but already lots of people were queuing up to serve a seat.

Ordered one flat white coffee and one waffle with vanilla ice-cream. Coffee bean was over roasted, so taste was very bitter. I really do not like it. But waffle with ice-cream was quite tasty with good looking.

Staff were very friendly. Will go back for trying more dishes there.
Mika Samuel
Absolutely tasty and outstanding food, great service. I have been here for more than 4 times, every time I will bring different friend in. Highly recommended.
Salim J
We had a great brunch experience. Had to wait a bit but their friendly staff helped us find a seat soon. Food was great and they didn't take long to bring it. Will definitely go back.
Travis
In for breakfast. We really liked the menu for its multiple Gluten Free options.

My friend had super food cereal which was jam packed with roasted nuts with a nice selection of fresh fruit and berry compot although could've done with a little more of the coconut yoghurt but beautifully presented and colourful.

I had the free range bacon omelet and was able to change to gluten free toast. The eggs were fluffy and light, still moist and the added fusion of dried shallots added an extra texture.

Staff were friendly and attentive, also accommodating in replacing my chai latte that didn't taste quite right and offered to box my remaining breakfast.

Really chilled ambience, vintage feeling complimented by the great selection of music.

This was a shot at trying somewhere new and will be staying on my list of places to go.
Ayaan
Wow this place is good, people que to come here so that says it all, amazing food service is ok but doesn't stop us from back 😀 keep it up people
Stephy_NakiGirl
Great to finally try this cafe as I'd heard lots of good things - and even better to find that it lived up to its reputation.
We arrived on a busy day and although they were full they offered to call us when a table was free which only took around 20 mins & gave us time to browse around the nearby shops.
We all ordered coffees & a fluffy for the little one - all were really well made, and we even ordered seconds. No burnt flavour, nice & strong & hot.
The menu is varied & has some unique options to choose from. We all really enjoyed what we had ordered, and the presentation was fantastic. We ordered Be Vegan, portobello mushrooms with bacon added & the omelette. Also a couple of sweet treats from the cabinet.
Will be back...and soon.
Banging food this place produces! The home made potato hash cakes are the shizzzz and DO NOT START ME ON THE COCOA SMOOTHIE I'D EASLIY SMASH THE BACK OUT OF TWO OF THEM IF I WAS ALLOWED!!!!

I had the creamy portobello mushrooms on potato hash cake!

Lunch on a busy Saturday, wait time was about 10min. Staff was very friendly. Children's menu had great option. Kids burger got two thumbs up from my little one. I had matcha latte for the first time, it had good balance of green tea and milk but if were looking for something with caffine, the ice mocha was a much better choice. The highlight of the matcha waffles was the nicecream.
Meisha O'Donnell
Beautiful set up, great location. As a celiac it felt so amazing to have so many options and not feel like an inconvenience - a rare experience in the world of needing to be gluten free. More than the availability though, the food itself was fantastic! Every dish had on point presentation and flavours beyond expectation. Favourite element was the slow cooked eggs; soft and gooey. And coffee - oh man, the coffee! Velvety and in a bowl. Perfect. Why did I move to Canada?
Jaffa
Worth the wait... Very popular place! We had to sit outside but at least there are heaters and blankets for winter! Coffee strong and a little bitter for my taste but food was amazing! We had the omelette with smoked mozzarella and bacon (which came recommended), the DJ supreme and the mushroom rosti stack! Quick service here and great for people watching.

Overall rating: 9/10
(Salmon Lox + super berry)
My expectations of food are ridiculously high and this cafe seemed to be one of the first to meet my expectations!!
Extremely satisfied with the taste and the presentation which was beautifully crafted!
I live in Albany but I wouldn't mind at all bussing again from queenstreet-Ponsonby just to eat delicious food.
Quite on the pricey side however 100% worth it.
Everything in this cafe is worth your money!
Oops. I also just realised a strand of my hair fell onto my plate so I was wondering if I should upload this photo or not..but UGH too beautiful to not upload! 🌝

We decided to try this cafe as we were up and about early and I'd read about how busy it gets. It was very cold that morning and with only one heater, it was not very inviting to sit down, relax, and warm up. Unfortunately I can't tolerate dairy so I ordered an almond milk flat white. The almond milk was horrible so I didn't have more than 2 sips of my tiny cup coffee. I tasted my husbands regular milk flat white and it was also unpleasant and tasted sour. I had the spicy mince with slow cooked egg which was ok while my husband enjoyed the eggs Benedict. Loved all the GF, DF and Paleo options. The service was good with attentive and friendly staff. Perhaps we had bad luck with our coffee but we don't think we'll get up early to go back for a second try.
Carmen Yong
Really nice atmosphere and good food here. I don't usually go for sweet foods but heard really good things about the matcha waffles so i thought i would give it a try and i was not disappointed! They were not too sweet and for people with more of a sweet tooth it comes with syrup too. Very nice trendy cafe, would recommend! ☺

Don't let the hipsters & lycra clad yummy mummies put you off.....this place serves great coffee & good food. Our first time as queues had previously defeated us but an early rising on Sunday meant we got in without any problems. It's a stylish large space with a lovely courtyard downstairs.
Service was slow to start but then very attentive, refilling water etc.
Huge brownie points for offering a half serve
of eggs bene with either salmon or bacon, only $11 but a perfect size for me. A choice of sourdough or rosti was offered - the rosti was beautiful, very crisp outside & fluffy inside. Egg perfect & very good bacon. Wish more cafes would offer half portions, it's a definite attraction for many people I know.

The other meal was mince with poached egg on gf toast. Mince was excellent with exception of bread - hard to find good gf bread as many offerings in cafes are lacking.

Will be back with friends for more breakfasts & lunches, even if I do have to wait in a queue!
Judy Chhy
The food was so bomb here!! We got the kimchi fried rice + beef burger. I love the fact that have so many DF / GF because me being intolerant to both those things I really do appreciate it. The kimchi fried rice was actually surprisingly good, it had enough spice in it. The smooths was nice aswell I'm not usually a smoothie person but I finish everything that I ordered, and when you finish everything you ordered you know that was a real good meal. Would recommended and come back here again!

Have been to Dear Jervois on so many occasions and have always been impressed by the quality of service and coffee/food, unfortunately our last visit was tainted due to what happened after our meal. The food as usual on this day was perfect, I had the creamy mushrooms and my friend had the eggs bene. We were seating on the sharing high table at the back of the restaurant who we shared with two other girls who left while we were eating. After the meal when our plates were taken, we were just chatting for about ten minutes when a waitress brought over a group of around 7 and just seated them at the table we were sitting at while we were still sitting without saying anything to us! Working in hospitality ourselves, we would have happily obliged to have moved understanding that this was a large group and our table was sought after but to seat people while we were still sitting without saying anything seemed a bit rude? Perhaps next time, a quick word to say that a big group had just come in and asked if we wanted anything else would be better rather than to be pushed off a table mid-conversation. Other than that, everything else was perfect as always.

I'd say that's one the best places I've been in Auckland.

Firstly I went there for a coffee, since they have Flight Coffee, which has one of the best beans you can find in the city.

But the whole place looked so inviting that I had lunch, dessert, brew coffee, espresso and some craft soda.

Almost everything was outstanding, specially the brew coffee from Ethiopia.

The service is also outstanding. Definitily recommend this for foodies and coffee lovers.
Harrison Davidson
Dear Jervois is LIT. Come here on the regs for the eggs bene. I normally just get the half with salmon because it fills you up. Today I had it with bacon and it was just as good.

Great spot, all ways packed out. Food and coffee is insane.

Danni 'Switches' Busch
Loved this place! Super cute aesthetic and could order vegan straight off the menu! It was also omni friendly which meant both me and my man were impressed and satisfied.
Emmawilson
Great options for vegans! Amazing Beetroot and berry smoothie and both the be good vegan and soba noodle salad have so many different and unique flavours.
Would definitely recommend!

I heard so much about Dear Jervois and finally had a chance to visit and try this place out. As you can see in the picture, plating of the food here is beautiful. I also loved their beautiful interior which made me want to stay for longer even after I finished all my food and coffee. The staff here are really friendly and kind.

Their food menu is very unique compared to other cafes. It has some healthy asian fusion menu which I want to try next time.
Natalie
You can never go wrong with an eggs benie, especially from dear jervious!! Absolutely amazing! Everything was on point and that home made hash brown really takes the cake. More importantly the atmosphere and the service was great and I love the hipsta feel about this place...everyone is so welcoming and it is such a nice casual place to chill in. it is now my new fav breakfast place..highly recommend! 5***

Average coffee (burnt), reasonably good food, but unfortunately very slow and not very polite service. Great location, with refreshing selection on the menu
Lillian Chao
Came here for brunch, absolutely beautiful food and variety of food to choose on the menu. Creative dishes available for breakfast and lunch. Berries smoothies and super juice are very refreshing for morning.
Sasha McCormick
This is without a doubt my favourite cafe in Auckland. As someone who suffers from coeliacs I was highly impressed with the menu and the amount of gluten free options. The food itself is always presented immaculately, and is always delectable. The ambiance itself is always great, they have really done the place nicely in terms of decor and it feels open and spacious. Every time I have visited the staff have always been excellent and organised.

Have been here once before and liked the vibe so returned here today for brunch and the experience was as previous without much to complain about.

We had the berry and peanut butter smoothies, both very filling, not overtly sweet (which can be an issue) and packed full of flavour of the berries in one and the taste of peanut butter in the other.

For our meals we had the bagel with pork which was served on a crisply toasted bagel, succulent pork with the added touch of lotus chips. A very satisfying dish. The other was the kimchi fried rice with slow cooked beef as the added extra, this was served with sous vide eggs which was flavoursome with the soft yolk of the egg adding a different dimension and sauciness to the dish. Every mouthful was a gentle surprise of either the tang of the kimchi or the flavour of the beef which made eating it a nice guessing game.

Overall a very enjoyable meal and definitely one to revisit

Only went there because it was the only cafe that I could find on my way to work in the morning, but WOW they make good coffee. Didn't have the time to order any food - only take away coffee and a scone - but the salmon bagel a lady was having looked really nice. I hope I can sit down and have proper brunch there next. Good interior.

Entering this cafe for the first time and being welcomed by a Dandy Warhols album blaring and warm friendly staff was just the start of a great brunch experience on Waitangi Day.

We sat in the cute little courtyard out the back and were seen to for drinks and food almost immediately. All staff were smiling and welcoming, a very warm atmosphere.

First up was a flat white and the berry smoothie, the smoothie served in a glass with coconut dusted round the lip of the glass, martini style, a very cool touch.

To eat we had the Eggs Benedict with Salmon on potato rosti and the Big breakfast which included in house made baked beans, mushrooms, thick cut smoked bacon, pork and fennel sausages, sour dough and the potato rosti, sans eggs but with avocado. Every element on the plate was cooked perfectly. The flavours and textures just made you want to eat more. Possibly the best breakie I've had in Aucks thus far.

I can't believe it's taken us so long to find Dear Jervois, better late than never huh?

We will be back again and again and again and again .....

So glad that this neat little place has opened up so close to my work! Love going here for brunch, so glad I don't have to drive to the Shore for Little King anymore! The waffles are spot on and their iced tea is lovely too! Great ambience and an overall great vibe! Love coming here!
Sophie-fern Wright
This bustling cafe is always such a great option for a sat morning brunch, if you can brave the queue! Have been here a couple of times now, I can't fault the service its exceptional and staff are really friendly! The food is of quality, however some of the portion sizes are quite small! Which is what I noticed with Little King as well (Same owners) have yet to try major sprout the other sister cafe. The food is generally really tasty - but would love a slightly bigger portion so I didn't leave feeling like I need that bit more! Have tried eggs benny - they were fine! The soba noodle salad was delish - but needed to be bigger! Coffee is good too!
Winnie Luo
One of the most delicate cafes in Auckland! The decor of this cafe is beautiful, the coffee is on point and the food is very special. The menu is innovative, lots of creative touches on the traditional breakfast/brunch menu.

This time around I had an omelette with crab meat. Different enough to be special but at the same time not too far fetched unlike some other "innovative" cafes.

The brew here is my personal favorite, always perfectly made.

It is a very expensive cafe, breakfast usually ends up being over $50. I hate to spend so much money first thing in the morning but whenever I decide to come here, I never regret it.
Thegreeats
Always very busy! Beautiful decor with okay selection of sweets in their cabinet
I believe original owners were from the Ben Gusto days in Browns Bay
Their muesli which I had was great! Well presented and with the options of having normal milk or almond milk, I definitely knew I was in the heart of ponsonby :)
Friendly staff and a great selection of cabinet food
Coffee was good also

On second visit had their vegan macro bowl which was filling and suprisingly flavoursome.
The kumara and black quinoa rice were my favourite parts.
Always consistently good coffee and good vibes
Want to try their waffle and poke bowl nxt time!

Dear Jervois is a super popular cafe in Herne Bay. When we arrived there was a waiting time of around a hour to get a table as they do not take bookings. Once we got a table, there was a considerable wait for our food which when received was cold and unenjoyable. Very appealing to the eye but was very underwhelmed by the service and food from Dear Jervois.
Tania Ostick
Food was tasty, our waitress was lovely and very attentive! The chicken salad was a bit on the small side but still very tasty. The cold brew was delicious!
Marley
Cool little place in Herne bay but the food was quite bitsy although nice. The asparagus breakfast came with nothing but asparagus and the ugly bagels were not generously portioned. However the atmosphere and amazing smoothies made up for it and we had a enjoyable brunch.
Rochelle
This place was actually really nice. The food was really good, I would say slightly over priced but not too bad. I wish the smoothies came in bigger glasses, not the tiny tumbler they were served in. Their seating isn't all that great if you are going with 5 or more people wanting to sit outside. Its located on the corner of a main road, so while you are trying to eat and enjoy your time. There are a lot of people walking up and down in front of you. There isn't a barrier to separate the restaurant and the street.
Gabriela Glory
Good food // amazing smoothies // healthy and organic// gluten and dairy free available

I've heard so much about this place and was really looking forward to go. Food and drinks were not to disappoint, I had the creamy balsamic mushrooms, my partner had the bacon eggs benne, and we each had the peanut butter and blueberry superfoods smoothie which was amazing!

I did however expect a little bit more from the service, the waitress did not check on our food, there was nothing wrong with our food but if there was, our table wasn't checked. The place was quite small, and it is near a junction so it is quite loud, however I would go back for the food.
Brendan
Love this place for sunday brunch so busy still the food comes out beautiful and fast. Coffee is ok the service is great and price is reasonable for quailty and skill it takes to make the food. Try their green egg beni its so tasty and looks awesome. All and all great place for sunday brunch.
Kenzi Yee
Such a chilled and friendly atmosphere, really loved the interior. Had a soba salad and grilled salmon with poached eggs - both were delicious! Not much to say except that this place serves yummy and well-presented food in a relaxed environment. Would come back again!
Rose
good staff teally nice atmosphere and the food we ordered was really nice even though i didnt end up finishing it. They were a bit pricey but worth it
Annie Jean
Great!! The chef understands the vegetarian needs, there was lots of flavor in my zucchini fritter... and it was a substantial size without a plate full of lettuce... thank you! Hipsters will flip out at this place. Only downer for me was the price, $19 for a breakfast fritter.
Charlene Weaver
I've been to this place a few times now and am always underwhelmed with the food. It's not horrible or bad, but not spectacular or memorable either.

I've tried a few items on the menu, and nothing has really stood out for me - friends that I've visited with, have also said the same. I find the hollandaise sauce quite bland, the paleo bread was very average tasting and the gluten free waffles had a strange taste, perhaps they could have both GF and non GF waffles. My favourite would be the eggs benedict, however I've had better elsewhere. I do appreciate the good service and beautiful presentation of each meal however I personally prefer other cafes around the area.
Louise MacNaughton
Arrived here at 2pm on a Saturday and there was a line! We decided to wait for a table. So happy we did!

We ordered the bacon, scrambled egg and sundried tomato pesto bagel, and the eggs benedict with bacon. My bagel was delicious, perfect balance of flavours and I loved the sweetness of the pesto. It was a perfect portion size and I was very satisfied. The eggs benedict looked amazing but my boyfriend said the hollandaise was super bland - pretty unfortunate as that's why eggs benny is so good! Other than that the food was great!

Coffee was to die for! I would make a special trip here and wait for a coffee any day!

Reading heaps of these reviews there is a lot of negative feedback about the service so I was expecting to experience that, but we had no problems! Our waitress was so lovely and smiles all around. Despite the cafe being jam packed, our food came at a reasonable time!

Very pleased, love this place! Need to come back and try some of those amazing looking waffles! Thanks guys!
Chris McKinney
Terrible customer service. I called up to ask if they sold Soul Organics juice in a big bottle. The lady I spoke with said yes, so I drove to pick up a bottle. After lining up for ten minutes the manager said that they only sold by the glass - I explained that I had driven specifically to pick up a bottle and only because I had been told that they sold them! I would have expected him to make an exception and sell me a bottle. Instead he acted disinterested and didn't.
Corina Elama
We really enjoyed the place, the food and the coffee. Reminded me of Little King in Milford which is also a favourite spot. I had the haloumi bagels which were absolutely delicious. The setup of the place is also really nice and welcoming. Beware that you might need to wait for a table, but you will not be dissapointed.
G
This place is not overrated. If you hear people raving about it, it's because it really is that good. The waffles are to die for - had the bacon and banana waffles. It was a little on the dry side but overall, it was good enough that I overlooked the slight dryness. Food was beautifully presented.

The last time I went, I had the portobello mushrooms and potato hash stack and that was unique but so yum! Love how this place was so vegetarian/vegan/gluten free friendly and that the default position is meat is excluded but can be included with an extra cost.

I also had the peanut butter berry smoothie, recommended to me by the waitress, who said that the peanut butter has a somewhat empowering taste but I didn't mind so I enjoyed it.

The only downside at all was that it was on the slightly pricey side. But this is Herne Bay and it's an excellent location and the presentation is amazing so you do get what you pay for. It does get really busy and there could be a slight wait but hey, the service and food are so good that it's well worth the wait.
Caitlin Snodgrass
My favourite cafe for Sunday brunch! Still return here often after moving further away. Love the creamy mushrooms and the mushroom hash stack dishes. Eggs are always perfect. The cacao granola bowl is yummy if you have a big sweet tooth. I always order a super juice and hot lemon ginger honey. Love this place
Sophia Ignateva
Really good! The service is good and the food is amazing, value for money! I liked that they have a lot of vegan/gluten free options, which makes it even better! Granola is a must try, even though it is quite heavy:(
Wilson Chau
Dear Jervois deserves a 5/5 from me just for their green eggs and thick bacon. To me, it's gotta be one of the most delicious and satisfying things I've had for brunch. The eggs, bacon, hash were all done to my liking and combined perfectly. Paralleled by an extremely tasty Cacao Maca Smoothie. Bravo.
Millie McCaughan
Came here for brunch on Sunday for a catch up with friends. It was busy, but we were seated pretty much instantly, from then on the service was great! Had a iced mocha it was amazing! And then I ordered the halloumi Bagel this was beautifully presented, as were all the dishes my friends ordered. Tasted delicious, honestly couldn't fault!
HJ
This cafe really lives up to the pumping Ponsonby atmosphere. It looked pretty busy when we arrived, service here from the get go was great - greeted and seated really quickly.

The decor here is really nice with a modern rustic look which brings a good vibe to this place. The staff were experienced, our waiter (Sam) was helpful and made it really easy to pick our meals after a few recommendations. We ordered the Portobello mushroom and potato hash stack ($19.50) and the Halloumi bagel ($15). The potato hash also had quinoa in it which was a nice change and for the health conscious! Both were good portions, fresh and kinda healthy.

Every one seems to be working as a team here and things looked under control for a busy cafe. The prices here are expectable for the Ponsonby area. I would love to come here again and try a few more meals! 👍🏼👍🏼
Damon
Love this place! The food/coffee is consistently awesome. It's really busy in the weekends, and sometimes the service can be average due to the staff running around looking stressed out.
Maddie
Came here for breakfast this morning, and I really enjoyed it! We were seated and given water and menus very fast. The staff were really friendly and considerate as I was asking for no coconut in the smoothie or meal, which the double checked with me when they brought everything over to the table. The "cruesli" was really nice, packed with lots of toasted seeds and nuts with yogurt and fresh fruit. The super berry smoothie with acai was refreshing and I loved all the sweet goji berries through it. Everything was well priced, It was in a nice location, and I look forward to coming back
Rose Horgan
Great service, was seated very quickly and water was given almost instantly. Ordered poached eggs and a berry smoothie, eggs were beautifully cooked and the smoothie was lovely. Prices were good, great value for money. Nice spot on Ponsonby road, breezy outdoor area, was great for the heat. Over all very enjoyable experience. Would recommend and definitely eat there again. I've been meaning to come her for so long! and yesterday I finally did, definitely did not disappoint! The atmosphere and service is very good! did not have to wait for a table which was lucky. I got the soba noodle salad, and my mum got the eggs Benedict, both of ours with smoked salmon. mum's a huge eggs Bennie critic but absolutely loved them!
the soba noodles were great and even came with chipsticks.
definitely would come back here if I'm in the area again!

After envying all the stunning photos of the infamous matcha waffles & BeGoodVegans on Instagram, I had added Dear Jervois to my list of to-go's many months ago. It was a Friday afternoon when five others and I came for lunch at around 1:30pm, and to my surprise it was only a 5 minute wait until we were able to be seated whew. I absolutely loved the vibe the interior gave out; with beautiful displays of Bluebells bakery's cakes on display and tables decorated with bouquets of flowers ; an extremely pleasant place to be in :))

After hard battles and life-changing decisions, we finally gave our order to an extremely friendly waitress. Two of us : the Be Good Vegan, 1 beef burger with friesss, one of the matcha waffles, one half sized benedict with salmon and one chicken salad.

Beef burger: SURPRISINGLY, this was probably my favourite dish of the table. Cooked to perfection and packed full of flavour and moisture, the burger was a real good value for your money ( one of the best burgers i've tried D:) THEM FRIES TOO! defs get the fries, you won regret it haha 9/10

Chicken Salad: This came close to being my favourite dish as I had low expectations of just a chicken salad; but to my surprise it was seasoned beautifully and the runny yolk just topped it off so well. 8/10 ! highly reccmmended too; esp if you're all about that low carb diet haha

Salmon benedict: 6/10, quite disappointing tbh and ALOT smaller than I had expected it to be. Although the potato rosti on the bottom was nice, the rest of it was quite monotonous and similar standard to what you could get at other cafes, i.e. if you're gonna go to dear jervois, might as well venture out to something diff ;)

Be Good Vegan: 5/10. absolutely stunning dish, but the same couldnt be said for the flavour as it lacked much of it in my opinion; I think it just needed more kimchi as the few pieces it was served with gave the dish what it needed. The roast vegetables were unfortunately undercooked too as they were EXTREMELY hard :( Quite disappointed with this one, but hey at least it's guilt free ( not to my wallet doe $$$ hahaha)

Matcha Waffles: 7/10, once again, a stunner to look at and 110% photogenic, but the serving size WAS quite small for the price you paid and the 'matchaness' couldn't really be detected when eating it. The nice cream served on the side was delicious tho, I guess if you had a sweet tooth I'd reccommend you go for this one but maybe as a shared dessert, not as a solo lunch meall

Overall, some dishes were hit and miss for me ( burger and chicken salad were d bessst ;) ), but the ambience and service was top notch! Not sure if I would return again as Herne Bay does have a lot to offer, but if I did; would defs like to try their famous mushroom dishes.

Recently went vegan and haven't found many cafes that cook up good vegan dishes but the quinoa kimchi salad from Dear Jervois definitely hits the mark for me. Texture and flavour, it taste so good and is also so filling. On the pricey side, but definitely will return to try out more things from here!

I got the creamy mushrooms which were super rich but absolutely on point. Loved the blueberry and peanut butter smoothie. Wish I lived closer to this place!!

I had been wanting to come here for ages! Last time we tried to come here for brunch, around 10:30 but it was a 30 minute wait for a table, and a 20 minute wait for food! I had heard a lot about this place through Instagram. Their dishes looked so pretty and yummy, especially their waffles! I had read an article by someone trying all the cafes that serve healthy option on their menu. They said the food was good, but not so much the service.
When we arrived we rushed in to get a table, but luck for us, it wasn't thats busy. we got a table inside, right out front in the opening, facing out onto the road. The dec or was interesting, as it was like two shops with the cabinet and, coffee and counter out front, and more tables plus the kitchen and toilets out the back. They also had tables outside, below a level.
When it came to ordering I got the cacao, maca smoothie (recommended by I Quit Sugar). It came in a plastic take away cup with a straw. I think they normally serve it in a jar as I've seen it in pictures. It was a delicious, thick, creamy and chocolatey! With chunks of chewy dates mixed throughout, and topped with cacao nibs. I finished it before my meal came!
I got the be good vegan, which i had heard a lot about. It consisted of a stack of brown rice, quinoa, roast vegetables; parsnip, kumura, red pepper, pumpkin, leek. Topped with a cashew aioli and edible flowers. It was well presented! I also tried a bit of my Mums akoroa salmon steak. It was quite nice as it wasn't too oily, and it had a smoky flavour.
Overall it was a cute cafe with good service and a yummy smoothie! My meal was nice, but nothing spectacular. However, they certainly didn't let me down with the presentation.

This place is pretty tasty. I had the mushrooms and my partner had the green eggs and ham. Everything seemed to have a serious lack of seasoning in my opinion but after a good grind of salt and pepper it was all up a tasty experience. Service was pretty average, with the standard "I don't really care about your dining experience" attitude you find at cafes like this.

Won't be rushing back, if ever.

Always love this place for brunch. I would also reccomend coming in early on weekends or you'll have to wait for a table as they're very busy!

Their chicken salads and bagels are the best and also my girlfriend says that their smoothies are the best and there is also a wide range of them to choose from so have a look at those too if you're a smoothie lover !

Coffee is excellent and the service is very friendly and helpful. Will always be returning when I have the chance.Cassandra

Dear jervois can be one of the most successful cafes by the owner from Ben gust to little king and now this. Their food is pretty good 4.5/5 and service is great where waitress would inform you with the waiting time before hand just in case you're in a rush. Coffee is 3.5/5 compare to little kings I reckon but if you're keen for a drink get their smoothie or the iced drinks. Overall.. they are great! Environment is great for kids too not too pack and it's wide inside.

The eggs benedict are to die for! love the place , great for brunch ! good atmosphere and would definitely revisit this place #g1 great food

Perfect lazy Sunday brunch spot. Was surprised with the quick wait compared to previous visits- only 20 mins at peak brunch time 11am. Filled with delicious vegetarian options. Pictured are the eggs bene & portobello mushroom stack. Coffee was a bit small and cold but the dishes were more than filling. Love the wee succulents gracing the tables.

One of my favorite places in Auckland, it's always full of people regardless what day of the week it is. The staffs are very nice and helpful. Their smoothie are so tasty and also must try their house made waffle with bacon. Definitely will go back more often to try all of their dishes.

My Dear Jarvois you were a delight.

Dragged my boyfriend to start the day off with what certainly turned out to be a jolly good breakfast. Service was friendly upon entrance regardless of how busy they were. When the food arrived I swear there were only sounds of mmmmmm's and ahhh's for the first few minutes as we dug in, followed by complete silence as we demolished the rest. Don't even get me started on the coffee, it was absolutely amazing! Smooth, aromatic, strong but not harsh. I would have stolen your barrister to make my coffee at home if he wasn't a grown man with rights.

Driving through Herne Bay and playing spot the Range Rover and puffer jackets, we stumbled across Dear Jervois.
Herne Bay might be getting a bit of a raw deal here, especially considering the socio-economics of the location. Don't get me wrong, there was absolutely nothing bad about this place, but there was nothing great or outstanding at all. Perhaps outside of this area it would have received a higher rating. Everything consistently felt like a 6.5/10. It presented what I would consider high food standards 5-7 years ago. Also I have to mention the coffee... It was burned. In 2015 there is simply no excusing this. C'mon you're in Herne Bay, raise the bar guys. Food is slightly above average but seems a little dated especially considering the area it's located.

Fresh, healthy food. Best time to go is early in the morning around 8-9 as after those time there is normally a waiting time! Food is presented so nicely, I have the mushrooms and they were cooked so well and nice and creamy! Nice to sit outside on the large table with the heating and it's covered in so your not in the cold.. Been wanting to go there for ages and really enjoyed it! Planning on going back already!
Eden Wood
Exceptional menu, beautifully presented and equally delicious food, friendly and efficient staff and it's not overly pricey. Would highly recommend the waffles! Only catch is it is very popular so you'll likely have to wait for a table. Definitely worth the wait though in my opinion.

Great location, cool decor and a tasty looking menu. Dear Jervois promises a lot, but doesn't quite deliver.

Coffee is good (albeit always a little slow), food is fine (but not as good as nearby Catroux) but it's generally the service that is a little lacking. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad...just not as good as you'd expect from a place with so much hype.
Melissa
Been here twice and the best things here (in my opinion) are the smoothies! My boyfriend doesnt usually drink smoothies but he ordered the blueberry and peanut butter smoothie and loved it! I really like their Raspberry and Beetroot smoothie :)

Update 1:
Came here again for lunch and tried something that was new on the menu - soft shell crab roll/burger and I loved it! It comes with 2 real soft shell crabs with actual crab meat that was soft and juicy. The soft shell was...really soft but still had the crispyness to it :) I was worried it would fall apart once I cut it because it's so big but it stayed put and wasn't messy to eat, which was great! The hot chocolate was just average.

Update 2:
They make small changes to the menu which is nice! Their winter roast vege salad with falafel was a nice tummy warmer.

Unfortunately I'm not a fan of their coffees and their matcha latte was super bland.
Tyler De Vries
Eggs Benedict was delicious as expected, unfortunately this is where it ends interns of good, coffee was cold, hot chocolate was flavourless, partners eggs were not cooked properly and the service was lacking. Understand it was a busy Saturday morning but not what we were expecting
Charlotte
Have popped in for breakie here a few time in the past couple of months. Being gluten free, i love having several options to choose from on the menu!!
Food is always amazing. Have tired the superfood cruseli, cacao maca granola, zucchini fritter and banana waffles which were all delicious! Coffee is okay,
Were told when se sat down there would be a 20min wait on food, staff were really informative. Cafe has a busy and lively vibe - defiantly recommend going early to get a table! We went at 9am on a sunday and a big wait-list started shortly after we arrived.
Food did take over over 20mins and coffee was slow so we were told this so shared the ginger slice and macadamia caramel slice before breakie!
Overall a great cafe just recommend going early to ensure getting a table and avoid a long wait for food! Will be back there soon!
Biohazard
Very nice coffees here. It's always busy and the staff sometimes look out of their depths and overwhelmed, but a friendly bunch.. a spacious urban cafe and a further courtyard area, which is very pleasant..
Auckland Foodie
Inspired menu in what seems to be a perpetually packed cafe. Service is good despite the constant rush. Loved the coconut seafood chowder with kumara, but it's not to everyone's taste. The gluten free waffles were excellent, but the maple syrup or molasses that came with it was literally glued to the plate. My every bite was tempting fate as I struggled with the stubborn treacle. Kept my fingers crossed that a trip to the dentist wasn't required! The challenge was worth it.
Conner Simes
Highly recommend the smoothies- in particular the cacao maca smoothie. Very busy, the service was still good. Cabinet was pretty empty when we got there (12) but would recommend off the menu- Waffles to die for 🙊
Lindsay Gilfillan
The owners of Dear Jervois have got so much right about this lovely cafe. Great location, interesting menu and good service. You can see the care and effort that has gone into the decor and the abundant, well-maintained greenery. The place is immaculate and carefully considered in almost everything.
I wanted to mention a very weird granola I ordered recently. It appeared as a icy chocolate soup with little pink bits (freeze dried something?) with nuts and sliced banana. Bad choice - I had ordered a dish that may have been suitable for a 5 year old but not adult taste. Way too gimmicky. I know Dear Jervois have another similar granola or cruesli (I think thats what they call it) which is spectacular but an occasional indulgence rather than regular as it over delivers on the richness.
My advice - do a more traditional but spectacular muesli that balances proportion with flavour.
Julia Adams
Dear Jervois is a busy spot but they have a very efficient system for getting people seated and served so it's never a major issue. There is a wonderful ambience and such a good menu with decent prices. As a vegan I find a large part of how much I like a place is how well they can accommodate to my dietary needs, and I managed to get exactly what I felt like - the superfood Cruesli - adjusted to be vegan with no issue. Will definitely be coming back!

Finally went here! And I didn't even realise how close it was to city. Service was good I would say in terms of the people but the food was really slow since they were busy and the food was subpar.. I got the potato stack and there was no flavour, I really couldn't even taste that I was eating potato lol but I definitely want to try the other food on offer. The burger wasn't very good either and wasn't hot coming out but then again I know that they were busy so things like that can be expected so I'm still wanting to go back with a bigger group maybe + just as a place to catch up with friends (:
The awkward thing about the cabinet was how the flies could get in and then would be trapped inside :/ Feel like they need a better system or a slide one so it doesn't accidentally stay ajar like it did on that day

I hope to update this review but the experience I had was unfortunate - different items on the menu look aboslutely delicious and I can't wait to try them
Cassandra
I got recommended this cafe from friends that spoke highly of the cafe and also knowing the good reputation of this place I was excited to try it out, but found that my breakfast was only average. I choose the portobello mushrooms and potato hash stack which lacked flavour and coffee was Luke warm. I also had a cacao smoothie which was the best smoothie Iv had although took awhile to come, it was worth the wait and made me want to come back and give the breakfast another go especially as the cafe is well spoken of.
Nazah Ali
Such a great atmosphere, friendly service from when we arrived till we left and everything in between, the food was really good and was happy to see all day breakfast as well as some options that you don't see at other cafes. Had the soba salad though would have been nice if I didn't have to pay $5 for chicken or salmon as it makes it quite pricey
Jimmy
Absolutely looooovvveeeee this place 😊 the waffles with bacon and banana are to die for!! Thumbs up to jervois will definitely be back for seconds
ThePrestonProwler
Popular place, and for good reason. Great menu, all choices seems to be winners. The quality of the food was top shelf. Coffee was good too.
Georgia Dobbs
Cute little cafe tucked in on the corner of Jervois Road! Lots of items on the menu looked yummy, was a hard decision between gluten free waffles, a bagel, and creamy mushrooms. I ended up having the mushrooms and a superfood berry smoothie, my friend also had the smoothie as well as the halloumi bagel. Mushrooms were super yummy! Amazing flavour, good size, and I got a poached egg which was perfectly cooked. My friend said her bagel was yum too (we love best ugly bagels anyway, how can you go wrong). Our smoothies were outstanding!!! 100% would get again!!! We also finished with a little macadamia and caramel slice which was so good and could be addictive 👅 overall prices were okay, food was great and service was also pretty good. Very cute cafe with a menu worth checking out! I know I'll be going back for the waffles!
Monique Porteous
If you want some beautiful looking food to Instagram, this is the place! What's even better is that the food actually tastes as good as it looks - score! The vibe of the restaurant is very hipster but cool. You kind of feel like a mini celebrity when you eat there. One thing I noticed is that they really cater to people on vegan diets, which is always nice to see. The waffles, bacon and caramelized banana dish is absolutely mind blowing, and as an added bonus the waffles are gluten free :) The only downside to the place is that since it is so great, the price point is a little high for breakfast foods, but so so worth it
Georgia Forde
Been here countless times and have tried many different dishes. Some of my personal favourites are the be good vegan and also the superfood cruseli. They have the best smoothies ever, I highly recommend them all. Because of its popularity there is sometimes a lengthy wait however you won't be disappointed!
Luisa Jamieson
Reliably good food here - always know what to expect and never disappointed. A lot of the time there is a long wait for a table but they make up for that with the delicious food. Highly recommend!!
Laura Hunt
I don't know why I put off coming here for so long! After finally getting the opportunity to come for a meal here I can safely say that Dear Jervois is absolutely stunning.

The menu is awesome! It has so many options that will suit you no matter what kind of food mood you're in. There are also so many different healthy alternatives it's like a dream come true! Today I tried the cacao granola bowl and my friend got the mushrooms and potato hash. My cacao bowl was so delicious and filling. The texture can only be described as dreamy. The mushrooms were also really really good, and the potato hash was one of the best I've ever had mmmmmmm. Despite it being a busy Saturday morning the wait for food wasn't unreasonable either, which was a pleasant surprise.

The only downside to Dear Jervois is the (not surprising) wait for a table. But believe me it's really worth it!
Mind The Crumbs
This little wee cafe is tucked around a corner on Jervois road, it was buzzing with customers. We had a little wait on our hands but it was well organised.

Had my mind set on one thing they had on the menu but the Zomato menu sadly wasn't up to date. So I had to settle for gluten free waffles with banana and bacon, okay it wasn’t settling as it was delicious, but the poached pear and rhubarb, fresh grapes, had a much more unique sound to it.

The waffle was light, fluffy and presented like a piece of art but they whole time I was getting food envy from my friend who order the brioche french toast. The mix of sweet and savoury was spot on, and the CARAMELIZED beetroot just blow my mind.

Their coffee is also outstanding, overall I can not wait to get back to Auckland to revisit Dear Jervois.

Sarah Reynolds #challenge

I came here on a Saturday afternoon for a late brunch catch up with a friend. It wasn't too busy since the lunch rush was over, so we managed to secure a table quickly (I know there's usually a bit of a wait on a busy weekend!) I love the open and sunny interior of the place, along with the simple but cute decor. My friend ordered the portobello mushroom & potato hash stack, while I picked out the brioche french toast with poached pear. I also ordered a superfood peanut butter blueberry smoothie as I'd heard great things about their smoothies.

The food came out relatively quickly since it wasn't too busy. The smoothie was great and all the flavours were present while blending nicely together (although a little pricey at $9 for the jar). I loved my brioche; the pears went so well with the sweet bread, while the yoghurt and mascarpone balanced it all out nicely. I tried a bit of my friends meal too and it was also really nice; great of them to give two poached eggs when it wasn't even an egg dish! Overall, a great brunching experience :)

Sarah Reynolds #challenge

I've been to dear Jervois more than once and I always suggest it when someone asked where is a good brunch spot. More often than not if its a Saturday or a Sunday you will have to wait for a table but I promise you it's worth it ! I have never been disappointed with the food it's always so full of flavour and delicious. My go to is either the creamy mushrooms or the eggs benny (standard brunch foods) everything is so full of flavour and everything you want in a brunch. There is so much to choose from and they also do half sized meals which is great !

I came here for brunch with some friends for my birthday back in March - so this is a bit of a delayed review, but hopefully things have stayed just as good!

I had the brioche french toast, because it seemed a bit unusual, and it was so delicious. Looking back at this photo is making me want to go back, it was such a delight. I recall that one of my friends had something involving haloumi and it looked amazing. On the beverage from, first I had a soy latte, and then I had a great cold brew coffee which was great. I love that it's becoming more widely available. I saw the baked good in the cabinet and they looked great too.
Bizcochito
We had brunch here on a busy Sunday; I thought it was fine. Had a bagel with haloumi and a beetroot raspberry smoothie; boyfriend had salmon steak which he thought was excellent. Smoothie was not the best and my long black was actually undrinkable; super bitter and the first coffee I have ever not drunk. I don't really get the hype; fine but not worth the waiting time.
Michelle Hilke
Absolutely outstanding!!! We had the GF waffles, wagu mince, crab omelette, portobello hash stack and the ugly bagel. All were fantastic!! Definitely a must.
Sarah
Dear Jervois,

I have been looking you up online and heard many great things about your food, the photos of the food do look amazing and I've tried to get into your cafe on the weekend once before but massive lines out the door, which means it must be good if people are willing to wait.

Just popped in for lunch, didn't get greeted at all. I had to interrupt a girl on the till to get her attention and ask if I could have a table. She looked at me as if I had said something rude and then stated she was busy and would be with me in a minute. She never came back.

So I asked another girl at the till if they were fully booked and she said, no you can go and sit down at a bar leaner and she gave me a menu.

This is where I waited......& waited..........& waited for someone to take my order. The staff seem to walk around with no urgency at all, they seem to worry more about how cool they look walking around Than paying attention to customers.

It's sad to see customers walking in looking for eye contact or acknowledgment and not getting any which makes them feel unwelcome and unsure of who they should approach. Do you just go and sit down or order at the till? It's quite unclear.

After 20 mins of waiting I couldn't wait any longer, if this is how long it takes to gets someone's attention how long does the food take? Maybe that's why there's such a long line on the weekends rather than it actually being busy.

Walked to zus & zo instead. Sorry guys but no matter how good your food is or your coffee, if the service isn't there and your cafe doesn't have personality then your not giving your customer the full experience.

Thanks for your hospitality and experience jervous.
Jessica Teasdale
The food is always immaculately presented and super tasty! Slightly higher pricing so not recommended if you're on a budget, but you pay for the quality!

Service is always super friendly but it is such a busy little space! Can be quite a wait for a table, especially on the weekends!!

I got the superfood cruesli which was super filling and tasty, both my friend and I couldn't even finish it! Their smoothies are also really filling and tasty and so good for you!!
Gentlepig
Dear Jervois smells of old money - it's a place where locals demands innovation, quality and service; all of which it embodies. Ever seen green eggs or Wagyu mince? Service is psychic, and impeccable. Cafes in these areas need to be special to survive, and Dear Jervois will not only survive, but continue thriving if it keeps this standard up.
Simone Halstead
Slightly disappointed, or had high expectations due to the hype. Although the 2 of us did arrive less then an hour before closing we were offered items from the cabinet and smoothies. I ordered the cocoa banana smoothie and peanut butter cupcake, whilst my friend ordered the the super berry smoothie and the Carmel slice. Both our smoothies lacked in flavour, mine just tasted like banana and powder and my friends tasted like watered down berries. However the Carmel slice was divine and the peanut butter cupcake was decent nothing mind blowing, but after a few bites both tasted overwhelming. Overall I would not return for their smoothies but may return to try the proper food menu.

Have been here a few times now since the first time we ate here. I absolutely love this place for their food most especially. Excellent food here.
I got to try their french toast, which was lovely and sweet. I had their chicken salad as well which was amazing. The dressing was so delicious I even finished the veggies first before the chicken. That's how good the salad was. I like their healthy approach but not lacking on flavour, which is very important. They make great food presentation as well. The food always looks nice , filled with colorful garnish and has a very appetising look.
The ambiance is a bit busy though , I guess this place is quite popular. Everyone eats here when they can. The service is good but I guess when it's quite busy, you have to be a bit patient. But it's all worth the wait, definitely! Sarah Reynolds #challenge
I have wanted to go to Dear Jervois for so long! We finally decided to come here for lunch on Thursday and met up with another friend. Luckily for us, our friend got there about ten minutes before us, so when we got there we didn't have to wait too long in the waiting list. We were directed to one of the higher tables near the back of the restaurant. This cafe is ridiculously busy, and apparently it is like this all. the. time. I think after my experience here though, I can definitely see why!

The interior boasts a gorgeous modern decor and the atmosphere is simply buzzing. I just felt like I really wanted to be there (and apparently so did a hundred other people).

After ordering, four people got seated with us on our table, and it was such a tight squeeze! When our food came (for both our parties), there was definitely not enough space for me to eat comfortably. I was awkwardly rubbing elbows with the person next to me the entire duration of my meal, which is the downside to this cafe. It was so busy it felt slightly claustrophobic. Next time I come, I'm just going to hope for a smaller table with room to breathe!

I decided to be adventurous with my food today and ordered the spicy pork loin salad. It came with spicy pork, greens, quinoa and brown rice and more in the dish! It tasted so so so good. I used the lettuce as wraps and the rest as filling, which was good because it took away a little bit of the oiliness in the pork. My meal was literally perfect.

Viren got the mince on toast with a side of sausage and Yvonne got the soup with bread, and a side of sausage and hash brown. Both loved their meals!

We ended up getting two iced mochas which were smooth blends. These tasted good as well! Not the best I've tasted, but good nonetheless.

Even though Dear Jervois was so busy, the service was still great! Waiters and waitresses were so friendly! I cannot wait until my next visit here.
HappyTummiez
Dear dear dear, what do we have here???? This place is decadently delicious. Good luck getting a seat! Usually packed to the brim. So food time.
Been here twice and on both occasions the food was superb. Pictured are the infamous 'be good vegan' and the 'spicy pork loin salad' as well as an iced coffee. The presentation of the dishes were very colourful, so much so that we were in awe of its beauty and dare not consume it. But if we didn't consume, we couldn't tell you how great it tasted. The flavours in the dishes worked very well together, like a well oiled machine, if it was a machine used to deliver sensations to your taste buds! The kimchi in the be good vegan was surprising as the flavour was strong and yet it was not overpowering. The best of east meets west. The spicy pork loin was mildly spicy, and portion wise it could disappoint the Giants among you, however it tasted just right.
Service is top notch, as one would expect from a great cafe. And the atmosphere of the cafe is overall cosy.
Conclusion, highly recommended! Seriously if you're not there, why aren't you? Happy eating!!!
Cindy Wu
Came here a few times now and have enjoyed every visit.
Their Spicy Pork Loin salad was fresh and flavourism, albeit the pork can be a little oily, but coupled really well with the lettuce.
My friend's Match Waffle looked absolutely delicious as well with a generous serving of berries. However, we couldn't taste the Matcha flavour in the waffles at all.

On my second visit, I ordered the Fish Finger Sandwich, and it was super tasty. The shoestring fries goes well with the tartar sauce, and the smashed peas was creamy and full of flavour. The portion was huge and well worth it's price.

Overall, Dear Jervois is always buzzing and lively, full of people, it's food is delicious and its staff were very attentive. Will definitely visit more times in the future.

Saturday brunch here. First visit. Had the peanut butter smoothie, mince on toast and waffles with mango ice cream and maple syrup. Had an extra poached egg with the mince cause well, one wasn't enough lol. Mince was nice n fresh and eggs poached perfectly. The smoothie was really good. Star of the brunch infact. Nice n light so you eat along with it. Waffles were hit and miss the maple syrup was very average really. But the waffles were really nice and so was the mango Ice cream. Can't go wrong with that bacon either. Would visit again to try the rest of the menu. Overall. Decent little place. Very busy. But we did get a table in 10 mins. So that's nice.

Finally got to come here after months of hearing about it. I was so excited about the menu and it was a tough choice, after being conflicted I had the mushroom and potato hash stack, my friend had the beef burger. We waited about less than 10 mins for our food so well done on that, the service was on the average side. The food was beautifully presented, the greens gave it a bit of colour and a lot of thought has been put into the dishes. The mushroom hash stack had everything I love in it, egg, hash brown, mushrooms, lentils. What more could I ask for. But unfortunately it didn't work for me, the mushrooms to me weren't marinated enough and cooked enough and the eggs didn't quite match the rest of the dish. The lentils were really good and were the best part. It just lacked flavour for me. I had a taste of the beef burger and had food envy, it was so tasty that if I went back I would get that next time. I would visit again but get a different dish

Enjoyed a lovely brunch here on the weekend, their eggs Benedict were really good and iced chocolate was delish! Fiancé had mushrooms and he really enjoyed that too :)

This is my favourite café in Auckland and the place that I always recommend to friends. It is located in Herne Bay and is a favourite among foodies. I have been here several times for brunch and I am never disappointed.

Everything on the menu looks amazing and healthy with gluten free and dairy free options. My personal favourite is the breakfast of sides - poached eggs on paleo toast with smashed avocado, salmon and spinach. The combination of flavours is incredible and all of the ingredients are always fresh.

The almond milk lattes are delicious but last time I tried their almond milk ginger tea – wow! It was sweet but not overly sweet and was so soothing on my throat. I ended up ordering another one after my meal.

Dear Jervois is always busy which is a good sign and the wait for a table is always worth it when the food is so good. Go check it out, you won’t be disappointed. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Food: 5Service: 4Value for money: 4.5Atmosphere: 5

Brunch at Dear Jervois is always amazing. You can never go wrong with the Eggs Benedict and there is always cute cupcakes on display in the cabinets. The cafe has nice decor and has indoor and outdoor seating, perfect on sunny days.

Came here on a busy saturday and manage to get a seat straight away. The atmosphere is really good service was superb! Although food and coffee took a while to arrive, we were fine with it. I had the creamy mushroom and partner had the beef burger. Portion of their meal is good size, creamy mushroom was really good until it got sickening because it was just too much for me. The beef burger was so so good! I had a ice soy latter with coconut syrup, it was really good, the coconut syrup brought out the coffee flavour even more!

We came here with high expectations after reading the reviews and left feeling a bit disappointed and a little ripped off. The Cacao smoothie was nice and the coffee was good but the breakfast itself was a let down. My partner ordered Eggs Benedict with salmon on "house made" hash which was essentially a hard overcooked slab of deep fried potato. The hollandaise was lacking in flavour also. I ordered the Bagel with "smashed" avocado, Emmental cheese and prosciutto with sun dried tomato pesto. It felt like that McDonalds moment when you open the box and see a pathetic burger in front of you nothing like what the picture looked like. A thing spread of pureed avo - not smashed, almost non existent pesto and a slice of cheese with one slice of prosciutto. Really disappointing and certainly NOT worth $15! Decor was nice, service was ok but not great. We weren't asked how the meal was so I didn't bother to give feedback but I wouldn't return. $75 for three people should have delivered a lot more.

The balsamic mushrooms were simply delicious. The fit out was the product of an interesting mind. The service was excellent. Everything about this quirky little restaurant cafe was great with one exception - it isn't in Wellington. If it was I would become a regular.

Came here for breakfast 2 weeks ago. I have been wanting to try this place and finally did! Yay! We came on a Sunday morning, it was quite busy. There were 3 tables waiting ahead of us, but we didn't wait too long - maybe 15mins. We ordered hot chocolate and chai latte for drinks. And to eat I ordered the creamy mushrooms and my husband had the salmon steak.
Both were absolutely delicious, the mushrooms were yummy, they used a mix of mushrooms including those pin needle ones (not sure what they are called ). There was plenty of sauce and it was very flavoursome. The salmon steak was good too. The salmon was tea smoked before they grilled it. Very delicious, although I preferred the creamy mushrooms over the 2 dishes but then again I am biased because I LOVE creamy mushrooms! I will definitely be back to try other items on the menu. Service was good although it felt like there were too many staff members. Also the cafe is in an old building so it can be quite loud in there.

Most amazing brunch I have ever had. Not only was the food presented amazingly it was outrageously delicious. Loved the variety available. Coffee was amazing. Fantastic atmosphere and great service.

It was my first time coming to dear jervois today for lunch. There was a group of 6 of us. I ordered a flat white and the eggs Benedict with salmon! It was amazing along with everyone else I was very content with my meal. The only thing that wasn't the best was the service, it was slow and took a while for our food to come out. However I would come here again if I didn't have a time constraint; it's pricey for a breakfast but was a nice treat.

Came this morning it was extremely busy had to wait 20 minutes to be seated. Staff were really friendly and you could tell they were trying their best with the masses of people wanting tables. The food was awesome! Group of us had cruesli, green eggs and the mushroom hash stack. Although bacon was slightly cold with the green eggs. Overall was really good and didn't feel rushed at all!

Lovely cafe great food and great coffee.

Atmosphere was also good.

One failure is it took 15min for a 2nd long black. But sometimes that just happens. Definitely would go back.

Had an awesome experience. Friendly staff and awesome food. I got the spiced wagyu mice with avocado and beetroot and raspberry smoothie. The food was flavorsome and visually pleasing.

Love this cafe. It's often busy, of course, but the food is worth the wait. Fresh menu that appeals to most tastes and diets- it's an easy choice. I had a iced mocha, raw feijoa juice, and chicken salad. Was perfect! My friend had the creusli and my other friend had the other salad. All were happy.
Sam Moriarty
Ordered the superfood cruesli and a berry smoothie. Food was good, rest of the menu looked nice too (however didn't really like the smoothie that much). Caters well for gluten free too

The staff can be a bit slow sometimes. The first time I went we were seated and the staff started taking orders from people who arrived after us. The second time I went it was 5 minutes before they were closing and the person at the counter rolled their eyes as I walked in. I know it's annoying when people walk in while you're trying to close up, but I thought this was a bit unprofessional. I would give the food a 4.5 but the staff brought my rating down

My Partner and I wanted eggs benedict but didn't want to drive to our usual in Onehunga (we live in the city)

I was told about Dear Jervois so we drove the 5 minutes and had to wait 5 minutes to be seated as it was packed!

When we were seated we ordered the eggs benedict (I got the bacon with extra hollandaise, not that I needed it, and Portabello mushroom side) my partner got the Salmon eggs benedict and also the Portabello mushroom meal.

The staff are so lovely and our meals only took 10 minutes to arrive (despite it being busy)

Not only was the food delicious but the hot chocolates were too, probably my favourite in the city so far.

We also got two Apple juices to take away and they were beautiful. We will definitely come here again

This is a nice cafe but very crowded.
I like their cappuccino and waffle.
The waffle is served with marple syrup and grilled banana. It taste so yummy!
Cool to meet friends here to have a great brekkie!

Revisited Dear Jervois for lunch. They have new menu and I selected Matcha Waffle. It was so good. The green tea waffle was top with banana slices and strawberry and some grains served with marple syrup. I love it so much!

Loooove this place!! Apart from being super busy (for obvious reasons) it is delicious!! The staff are so welcoming and although they could not seat us straight away they still were very friendly and seated is as soon as they can. I felt the menu was reasonably priced and was overall a very delightful lunch date
Phee Nicks
Saturday brunch meant there was a 20 min wait time to be seated and another 30 min wait time for food, but so worth it! Beautifully rustic.
Hello.jennie
Arrived this morning (Saturday) at 9.30am to a very busy Dear Jervios even though it was pouring down with rain. I appreciate that the café was super busy but the waitresses seemed a little unorganised and didn't notice that I had been waiting on the couch to get a table until I had to get the attention of one of them. Apart from that little hiccup we had an enjoyable time.

As my friend and I both wanted to try something savoury and something sweet, we opted to share:

Gluten-free waffle with bacon and caramilised banana served with mascarpone and maple syrup: I was looking forward to getting one of their waffles so much but unfortunately they seemed to have changed the menu and only this waffle was on offer. Although not the perfect waffle, it was thick and soft, and gluten-free. The bacon was more on the softer side rather than crispy, but I like it that way. Overall it was a enjoyable dish, but a little on the pricier side.

Spiced wagyu mince with cashews, poached egg on paleo bread: I think this must be a new addition to their menu. My friend picked this dish and I was a bit apprehensive at first, but it was surprisingly enjoyable. The mince and cashews were a delicious blend, although I would've like it if there was a little more to the spice. It was my first time trying paleo bread and it wasn't too bad! The poached egg was cooked to perfection. Although this dish looked small when it came out, it was surprisingly filling - would recommend!

My friend also had the Hakanoa Lemon, Ginger & Honey Organic tea. He said the brew was strong and greatly soothing for his sore throat - perfect for a cold autumn morning.

Tucked in a the corner of the Herne Bay shops, Dear Jervois is an eatery on Jervois road, a hub for foodies and coffee lovers. Its large windows, gold signage and beautiful black antique door pull you in, leaving you eager to see what lies inside.

As we walked in, a rush of noise flooded over us; it was buzzing with customers and quite loud. Whether it was due to the horrible weather, or that the word had spread about Dear Jervois, we still managed to find ourselves a cozy spot in the middle of a long, shared dining table.

Within minutes of been given our menus, we were asked if we were ready to order. This was lovely as the service seemed prompt and efficient; until the third and fourth time we were asked by different waiters. There was a slight feeling that we were being rushed to order, but on the contrary I would much rather over keen service to none at all.

I chose to order the blueberry and peanut butter smoothie; a combination of superfood protein powder, almond milk, medjool dates and the stated blueberries and peanut butter. Delish! There was no way of telling it was dairy and sugar free, something I would most definitely order again.

For lunch I ordered the grilled haloumi, roast vegetables and lentils cooked in mushroom reduction, to which I added chicken. The meals arrived very efficiently, and were plated in heaped, enticing mounds. My foodie friend ordered the vegan dish or quinoa, brown rice, beetroot, kim chi and cashew dressing, which looked equally as good. Both dishes were very tasty and extremely generous in portion size for the price ($18) and we both left with enough for tomorrows lunch. The negative to our meals were the vegetables; they were rather under cooked, as opposed to the soft and creamy texture you dream of with a roastie.

Overall, I really enjoyed my experience, and would easily be able to ignore the little kinks that we encountered. This place is perfect for those with a variety of needs, and I would recommend it for the speedy service, and tasty flavours within all aspects of their menu.

This had been high on my to-visit list for a long time and the wait list when I arrived for lunch one summery day spoke for itself. I cannot fault the service, nor the presentation. The waffles my friend ordered looked fantastic! I chose their Be Good Vegan after hearing rave reviews of it. Sadly, it was way too salty and not enjoyable. Can't say I wouldn't pop back in the next time I'm in the beautiful Herne Bay.

Food was good. Service was fine.
This place is always busy so I thought maybe the staff would be more onto it. They seemed very overwhelmed...
We got told there was a half an hour wait for the kitchen but food was served a lot quicker than that.
Our drinks came 15 minutes after we finished our food which was a little disappointing.
Funky lightbulbs and deliberately worn-away brick walls seems to attract everyone these days... The whole package just wasn't as good as I expected, but are definitely on their way to something good.
I'm keen to go back in a while and see what they're up to.

I came here for brunch recently and the food was fantastic, great flavours and the best of all, perfect poached eggs! My berry smoothie was also delicious. Dear Jervois is always extremely busy in the weekend, so do expect to wait a fair amount of time. I believe because it was so busy, our waitress was a bit flustered and did get some orders wrong and missed one completely, they were quick to resolve any issues though. I would recommend this place for a nice Sunday brunch.

I am a lover of lines - if I see a line forming, I know that whatever I find at the end of it will be worth queuing for. And I wasn't disappointed with Dear Jervois.

We went on ANZAC morning, after attending the dawn service at the Auckland Domaine. By 7:30 there were already about 15 people waiting outside for the opening.

By the time they opened their doors officially, the restaurant was packed in seconds.

Their coffees are tasty, a truly great blend. They have numerous tasty baked treats on display near the till - we grabbed a raspberry cupcake to eat while we waited for our breakfast. It was amazing!

My fiancé and I both had eggs Benedict, his with salmon and mine with bacon, except I ordered a half portion - something I am delighted that they offer, and have been wishing other breakfast restaurants would do too. It was great - served on a hash brown, perfectly poached eggs and a great lemony, hollandaise sauce.

We'll be back for sure, and I intend on trying their waffles next time!

Fantastic, I have been to Dear Jervois a couple times and they have both been amazing. I thoroughly enjoy it for breakfast first thing in the morning because they have fantastic coffee and outstanding smoothies. The food selection is good and can do some modifying of meals yourself which always helps. I often opt for the salmon and enjoyed it a lot. The only downfall I have of Dear Jervois is the price. Which I know for the area can be explained but it really does dig a hole in your pocket especially because you can't walk away without a coffee, smoothie and a main breakfast each due to being to nice. The service is casual but nice but nothing special, very cafe style which is ok in this situation. Overall a fantastic dining experience.

Went to Dear Jervois for brunch on Sunday and as expected, the place was packed. We were offered a table in the courtyard. It was lovely sitting in the sun but being outside meant that we were a bit forgotten at times. Had to ask about 3 times to be brought water. The wait for food was 40 minutes which I actually didn't mind too much, I know the place is very popular. But in my opinion, the food isn't worth the wait. The food here is very good but not outstanding. I had the eggs benedict with salmon and avocado. I really liked the presentation of the dish. The salmon was excellent quality and they cooked the eggs absolutely perfectly. But the dish as a whole didn't blow me away and it wasn't warm enough. My friend ordered the chicken salad which she really enjoyed. She ordered coffee which she said was very bitter, I tried it and agreed with her verdict. My iced mocha came in a plastic cup, not sure what that's about. It should have been served in a glass. Instead of water glasses we were offered paper cups. It may be a small thing but it's not a great look. The iced mocha was tasty though. I'm really impressed that they use free-range eggs and bacon. I'm going to give this place the benefit of the doubt for now, but they better bring out the fine china for my next visit. .

Love this place though always busy. Food and coffee delish. Service good when they aren't too busy.. Need to go early or you'll miss out on cabinet foods but meals never fail to please. Be back when next in Herne Bay -worth a wee wait!

The food here is so good that nothing else matters. The service can be a little spotty and the waiting times for a table long, but frankly I would be quite content if every cafe in Auckland were replaced with Dear Jervois. The roast vegetable and lentil salad with halloumi is so richly imbued with umami that halfway through a wave of fear that it contained bacon washed over me (I'm a lifelong vegetarian). The horseradish yoghurt is utterly unexpected but the perfect zingy complement to the savoury lentils and vegetables. Admittedly that salad is so good that I have never ordered anything else, but I have sampled a friend's mushroom hash stack which was nearly as wonderful. Although Dear Jervois is constantly hectic (even on weekdays, which I find baffling - who are these people who are able to indulge in long weekday lunches?) I find the room strangely calming. Maybe because each time I visit I know that certain deliciousness awaits. Highly recommended.
I Love Food
I had the gluten free waffles with banana and bacon. Was absolutely amazing. Great presentation. Love the cafe. It's has great decor and good atmosphere!
My friends got the haloumi bagel, prosciutto bagel, and matcha waffles. They all looked amazing, definitely want to go back to try them all!

#Brunchbumpin

Met up with friends for brunch on a Sunday morning, we waited 30 minutes for a table which was expected as it is such a popular Cafe. The staff are friendly and food is well presented

We ordered:

Portobello mushrooms and potato hash stack with poached eggs, stuffed Shitake mushrooms, lentils, watercress salad garnished with Parmesan and basil pesto

Creamy balsamic mushrooms - Portobello, Shitake and button mushrooms with bacon finished with Parmesan and served on ciabatta

Tea smoked salmon steak with two poached eggs, wild watercress, Apple slaw, quinoa, brown rice, pickled Cucumber and Carrot, sprinkled with chopped pistachio and Almond

Gluten free waffles bacon and caramelised banana with mascarpone and served with maple syrup

We really enjoyed the salmon and waffles to finish

The coffee wasn't too bad either, however heard they are switching to flight coffee which is awesome so should be better

I've been here twice in as many days which tells you how I feel about it right off the bat.
The food is great. I have tried the Prosciutto bagel, free range chicken salad and the soba noodle salad and everything impressed me.
The hot chocolates are full of flavor and nice and hot so I had one both times I went. I really like this place. We had no trouble finding a table either time I went which is nice. The reason its not rated higher is because I think the service could've been more attentive. Both times the wait times in the food and drinks was quite long and after we finished the meals, we have to flag someone down for a second drink.
Lucyeatsakld
Definitely the place to be for your Sunday brunch - just make sure you get in early cos by 10am the waiting list is probably about 20-30mins! Will be worth the wait once you have their food and coffee all up in your mouth.

Amazing cafe! Visited after hearing fave reviews and I can see why! Delicious food, great atmosphere and reasonably priced. You can also get half sizes if you aren't a big eater which is an amazing option not available at many places! Would recommend!
Izzy
Delicious breakfasts! Also have half sizes if you're not a big eater! Great atmosphere very popular and reasonably priced. Would 100% recommend

I had been hearing great things about Dear Jervois and again, seeing mouth-watering pictures of their waffles on Instagram. So, when my cousin came to stay a few months ago, we ventured to Dear Jervois in search of a delicious breakfast.

It was incredibly busy when we arrived at 9am on the Saturday we went, but luckily we still managed to get a table. I recommend coming this early if you can, otherwise be prepared to wait during the busy lunch period.

I really loved their menu, as it has many different options whether you are a sweet or savoury fiend. Every dish is also clearly described and they have many gluten free, dairy free and vegetarian options.

We ordered smoothies to start - peanut butter and blueberry for me and cacao maca for my cousin. Both were tasty, but quite filling. I think next time I will opt for coffee instead!

The food was absolutely delicious. My sister ordered the eggs benedict with salmon, avocado and spinach, which for a normal size would be $18, however they have this cool option where you can order half the size, and in this case it was $10. It was truly more than enough and still a very generous serving for $10.

My cousin also chose eggs benedict, but with mushrooms, homemade hash browns and spinach (normal size is $19.50). It was such a large portion that my she couldn't finish it! Definitely reckon the half portion meals are the way to go!

I just couldn't go past the waffles section! Waffles with four different options - never seen so many in a cafe! I ordered the bacon, caramelised banana and maple syrup waffles. They were seriously amazing AND crispy - highly recommend!

We also ordered two sweet and two savoury muffins for takeaway to have for afternoon tea later. They were moist, flavoursome and again, like the waffles, I highly recommend!

The service was friendly and efficient even though they were really busy. We also didn't have to wait long for our food, which was another highlight!

Overall, I cannot fault Dear Jervois. The atmosphere was lovely, the food was delicious and the service great. I would definitely come back again, namely to try their coffee! And to also try their 'Be Good Vegan' dish with quinoa, kimchi and beetroot (ultimate noms) or the Superfood Cruesli with fruit, yoghurt and berry compote - or maybe I'll just order both!
Petra Rijnbeek
A cafe full of things and people to look at - great coffee and an interesting menu with food pairings to keep you on your toes! A chef who certainly understands the sweeter things in life with decadent dishes like waffles and even the cabinet strawberry and white chocolate muffin is ridiculously good! I love their muesli for pre-noon and my all time fav is the noodle salad with a real kick to it. Just tried the spicy pork on leaves and man it was awesome so much fun too eat also!!!! Great smoothies too Fyi!!!

This was my second visit to Dear Jervois. Sad to say it was nowhere near as good as the first. We visited around 1pm on a sunday afternoon, already expecting to be waiting for a seat which is fair enough. After waiting 15 mins for a seat we then had to wait another 15 mins to order a coffee.. after the people who sat beside our table we served first, even though they sat down 10 mins after us.
The food took around 40 mins to come out...with it being served with no cutlery.
At the end of the day if you are happy to wait over a hour to be served food on a sunday afternoon with poor service then be my guest. But i think this may be my last visit. On the plus side the food and coffee are good- just not worth the wait.
Trin
Definitely one of my favourite cafés in Auckland! Our meals were full of flavour and very filling. I ordered the creamy mushroom because of all the reviews I read and many people ordered that and gave good feedback. When it first came I didn't think it would fill me up but it was actually very filling! I couldn't resist their fresh fruit waffles and ordered that too. Highly recommend trying their waffles!
I was in such a rush to be on time that I didn't even notice the beautiful decor of Dear Jervois at first. Cute name for a cafe with a personal touch.
The past 2014 had been a winner with all the new cafes that proved that brunches don't have to be just an eggs benny casually tossed together.

This newish cafe had always been on the back of my mind and I thought just after new years would be the ideal time to sneak a table at this busy cafe.
We were lucky to get a seat too, settling at the long wooden communal table. The menu seems to boast it all, catering for the gluten free, vegan and free range meat crowds. But people pleasers can't always win it all.
The menu is similar to their sister cafe Little King with their Shore famous waffles, Best Ugly bagels and choice of half an eggs benedict - a welcoming choice for small stomachs.

I gravitated towards the portobello and potato hash stack, mainly for the love of mushrooms.
Little did I know it would be the hash stack that was the tastiest on the plate. I love hash browns in general but these were done so perfectly - not oily or too loose that it would fall apart before entering my mouth. The mushrooms were ok but it lacked some punch in flavour. Another clear winner was the pork belly - impressive when it came and continued to impress with the fresh crunch and warm heaty flavours. And while you can't go wrong with a salmon benedict, it was one of the better ones I've had with generous lashings of salmon curled around the perfectly poached egg.

If I had a separate smoothie stomach, I'd try the peanut butter and blueberry, or cacao maca smoothie. But priced at $8, they will no doubt come in the massive trendy mason jars that basically mean one liquid meal for me. Next time for a health grind, I'd love to try Be Good Vegan with promises of quinoa, brown rice, beetroot, kimchi, pumpkin, coriander, sesame seeds and cashew aioli - sounds good already!

Reminded me a lot of little king cafe on the north shore. Menu looks similar too but might be slightly different. Ordered the banana n bacon waffle with maple syrup. And my friend got the mushroom stack. Coffee was made perfectly as well. Very satisfied and a good start to the day. Highly recommended!

Came here once before, had a good meal, came back today and was absolutely shocked at the awful service. In a near empty restaurant had to wait for staff to show any kind of service to customers, and rather than being properly greeted being told "the kitchen is closed." Yes thank you for that, but our aim was to get coffee and drinks in the first place. Sitting down and waiting over half an hour with no water nor wait staff approaching the table was especially terrible for any establishment, and any attempts to make eye contact with staff resulted in no attention - they seemed preoccupied with talking amongst themselves and pretending to do work. Overall there are dozens of cafes around Auckland that make Dear Jervois an obsolete place to visit with underwhelming service. Would not go there again.
Monica
Dear Jervois, you are possibly my favourite Auckland cafe of the season. Why? Food is absolutely delicious, wholesome and free range. I had the portello mushrooms & potato hash stack - mushrooms were tantalising, potato hash had just the right crisp on the outside + soft on the inside, poached eggs had the perfect smooth, unbroken yolk, and that bacon was damn tasty, ending with a healthy side of salad. I was rather full at the end, indicating the generous portion sizings, matched by the fair prices for return. The cafe has a lively though busy feel coupled with a fun, funky interior. ✌️

For more reviews around Auckland:
@adl_taste_akl on Instagram

My attempt to slowly eat through Metro's 2014 Best 50 Cafes in Auckland, our next dining adventure continued at Dear Jervois. Known for their huge popularity within the Herne Bay community as well as to the hip locals in Ponsonby, getting a table can be difficult. We arrived around midday on Sunday and was greeted by a waitlist. Yet, patience prevailed and instead of heading to another cafe, we waited and managed to get a small table to ourselves.

Opened earlier this year, it's existence brought a huge revival to the cafe scene in Herne Bay. The menu is new and extensive with several vegan and gluten-free options, catering for many dietary requirements.

Opting for something savory, I ordered a very predictable bacon eggs benedict served with a gluten free house made potato hash instead of bread. The hash was utterly amazing, the mix of quinoa and potato gave a subtle nutty taste and the eggs were perfectly cooked. My two other dining companions decided to have waffles; one with bacon and mixed fruits and the other a walnut and almond with no banana. Although not the best waffles (compared to the likes of Waffle Supreme), it is still worth raving.

Of course, a lunch will not be complete without coffee. I happily polished a mug of the hot brew coffee made with Coffee Supreme. Perfection!

A lazy Saturday morning calls for brunch out! We decided to try Dear Jervois as we were in the area and there are fantastic reviews.

As we entered, we were told there was a 30min wait time, which was appreciated. I always find it better to be told from the beginning rather than waiting and wondering what's going on.

We started with coffee and juice while reading the menu. Both were better than standard, the juice especially. I was rather envious of the guy sitting next to me as his smoothie looked delicious! (Will try next time!)

I ordered the courgette fritter and my bf ordered the mushrooms with poached eggs. My fritter was huge, taking up the whole plate. There was some kind of sauce that went with it, couldn't get enough! Such a nice meal as you won't feel heavy or any guilt after eating ;)

The staff were awesome. I felt bad for them as there were a few unreasonably demanding customers, but they never once looked frustrated! Will definitely be heading back especially with summer coming up, will be nice close to the beach :)
David Boshier
Very attentive service which was quick in delivering great coffee. The menu has the standards plus a range of more health options. I started the day with the fresh Halloumi best ugly bagel. The sun streams in at breakfast time.

After trying to get in on the weekend And giving up with excessively long waiting times we went for Friday morning early breakfast and got in no problems. We both had bagels, mine with prosciutto, cheese and avocado and they were excellent. Great coffee and friendly efficient service.
Two Dark Coffees
The amount of talk surrounding this place is huge at the moment. It's the place to brunch or lunch, to grab a quick coffee or pick up a sweet treat.

In need of trying this place out for myself, I headed over last Saturday for an end of exams meal out!

The place was jam packed with people when we arrived. With the proposed 20 minute wait being cut to a mere 5 minutes we were sat down in no time.

Placed in front of me was a menu any foodie would be impressed by. Full of healthy smoothies, jaw-dropping burgers and all-day waffles deciding what to have proved to be difficult.

Eventually my stomach decided to have the burger and no regrets came with it. Adding a side of fries brought the total to $23, which isn't too bad considering I was very full after it.

I had the peanut butter and blueberry smoothie to sip on afterwards which was really tasty. Although only order it if you really like peanut butter, that taste over powers the blueberry - just saying.

My friend ordered the Waffles which are so photogenic don't you think? I had a few bites and would have been content with that choice as well, plus it was slightly cheaper than my burger.

The waiting time for seating and eating weren't bad, especially considering it was peak hour.

The staff we dealt with were really friendly, and attentive.

I think the prices are reasonable for what you get. I didn't to try out their coffee so maybe next time.

Great place to take a group of friends for a meal, just don't be surprised if you have to wait for a table.

Had the best soba noodle chicken salad. Light, tasty, flavourful and satisfying.I will definitely be back. The coconut beetroot balls were amazing too!

The meal I had at Dear Jervois was very nice. The bagels were sourced from Al Browns Best Ugly Bagels and stacked with great fresh ingredients. The soda I had was also really nice, it was dressed up quite nicely too. The general atmosphere of Dear Jervois was quite modern and I really enjoyed the decor. Using small pot plants around the place made the cafe seem more relaxed. The customer service was very good as well, all the wait staff were very kind and tentative. Seeing as it was my first time at Dear Jervois I was very impressed with the overall experience. The only reason I did not score higher was that I found it difficult to communicate with the friend I was there simply because it is school holidays.
Rebecca MacDonald
I had hear a lot of buzz about this new comer, about how amazing it is plus how they have lots of healthy food options, so of course it was at the top of my list for places to explore next. As I was driving to meet my friend there the first thing I have struck by was how big the shop front was. Then once I got in there how busy it was, so being reasonably big and still busy... there must be something to the good press I had been hearing about!
The menu was enticing, but in the end I went for the chicken salad, the mix of pecans, chicken, caramelised beetroot and pan fried courgettes was hard to go past and it was delish.
But with a bagel menu with Best Ugly Bagels as well as 4 x waffle options (best save those for a cheat day) I will definitely be back to sample more the of the menu.
Alana Baker
Was sad today that we couldn't get into dear jervois for brunch/lunch as I've heard such great things about this cafe the wait was 60mins which we couldn't wait for. Hopefully next time we will be more successful and get to try their food !
Zelda
Best eggs bene yet, good size meal. Great atmosphere and wonderful service. We didn't have to wait 20 minutes for a table. But the coffee while we wait is a good idea if you weren't in a rush. I'd definitely go again!

Loved it. Came for brunch/lunch and really enjoyed it. Our group ordered the beef burgers, soba noodle salad and eggs on toast with sausages and the biggest hash brown you'll ever see. Smoothies and coffee were awesome too. Wouldn't order the baking in the cabinet again but the food off the menu was awesome. I think some of the wait staff are total newbies but didn't detract from the experience. Will definitely be back!

Dear Jervois is the new kid on the block on Jervois Road, Herne Bay. Just newly opened, it was an attractive must try for my foodie friend and I.

After trying to search for a menu or website online and with no luck we were a bit unsure about what to expect. But Dear Jervois aims to serve, the GF, Vegans, FR (Free Range) Meat crowds. These trends are def following more and more with each new eatery opening up. I really support that these options are available especially the Free Range Meat. The healthier the better -- as long as flavour and texture is not lost.

What was great was the portion size. Both dishes were like $18 each and for the amount served, neither of us could finish what we started - coming home with doggie bags. We both agreed that the food was presented beautifully and came out efficiently.
I actually ordered the Vegan dish but ironically added chicken. I'm glad to say the brown rice and quinoa was cooked nicely, not being crunchy and hard like most places you eat it at. However we both had undercooked roast veges - which tends to be the case at most eateries. Most of the time kitchens undercook roast veges slightly so they don't go soggy whilst being stored .. but tbh they are never reheated well enough and still are undercooked when served. Food was good but a bit bland. It just needs that oomph.

There were a lot of staff on for a Monday, however it was quite busy - but maybe some confusion on which staff looked after which table?.. as we were asked like 10x if we were ready to order from maybe 3 or 4 staff members. -- I guess its much better then being forgotten about and being ignored ha.

Great first impression and warm and comforting atmosphere. Definitely go try it!

Rating:
Food: 6.5/10
Service: 7/10
Value for Money: 8.5/10

Went to Dear Jervois on a busy Saturday morning. I had 20 people in my group. I decided to phone on my way there just to see if there would be space and fortunately the large table was going to be available in 10 minutes. I arrived on the 10 minutes and Jess organised the table and soon we were seated. My group all finally arrived so we ordered. Probably took about 30 minutes for the orders to arrive but as we had a lot of talking that time was perfectly fine. The meals all came out at the much the same time within about 3 minutes of the first to the last. The cafe coped today fantastically and to get 20 meals out and all tasted absolutely delicious our group was very satisfied. We had Jess and another waitress both were excellent.
The berry beetroot smoothie I had was delicious. One person had the chocolate waffles and that dish looked amazing, and so did the other waffle dishes. The portobello mushroom, lentils on hash brown, poached eggs which were to perfection and salad was tasty and highly recommend. Someone else had mushrooms in a sauce and that tasted amazing.
I would highly recommend Dear Jervois.

After hearing nothing but good things about this cafe my partner and i decided to try it out.

I understand for a monday you guys were kind of busy… I guess. We started off ordering our coffee's and 20 minutes later we were still waiting! We asked our waiter politely if they were on the way and he looked very fluster by this question but said they would be 1 minute. He didn't go check with the barista he just fiddled around with the heaters outside for a further 2 minutes. The guys at the table next to us then got their coffees even though they had only been seated 10 minutes. A further 5 minutes had passed and we were finally given our coffees!! I will admit the coffees were good. Maybe not as good as i would have expected after waiting 25 minutes but at least we go them right?

The food wait wasn't tooooo long.. for a cafe it was slow. But as I have previously mentioned, we had only heard good things about the food so were happy to wait. Food arrived, presentation was good. My partner order the beef burger and fries. Fries were stone cold.
I ordered the halloumi bagel, where was the pesto? Halloumi tasted like cardboard, so over cooked it was a joke!

I understand you're a new cafe, but c'mon guys at least hire staff that have worked in hospo before and know how to run a cafe! No apologies from anyone when we mention the fries were cold, no explanation when i asked how long the coffees would be… or when they arrived there was still no apology.

With copious amount of cafes in the area, customer service can be the difference between returning or going some place else.
Good luck… you will need it Dear Jervois!!

We were seated at the window and given menus. The food was quite highly priced, but I can't comment on the quality or presentation. Staff seemed polite but after 25 mins of sitting there without service we left. Upon leaving we saw 4 families waiting on the bench with menus waiting for service as well.

The restaurant is hugely out of proportion to the kitchen and barrista area, and they definitely need more staff when they are that busy.

Unlikely to go back.

Cute little cafe, but a huge let down by its staff, one in particular. (Male, ginger hair and wearing blue shirt with white dots today, that's right, you) The guy took our orders, instead of writing it down, he repeated the orders back to us, 3 times, which was cool, no issues there. Waited 40 mins, still no sign of food, the same guy told us that he will follow it up with the kitchen for us, 5 mins later, he returned with cutleries and told us the food is coming, if we are not happy about the speed, make sure that we complain to the right person, almost felt like he wanted us to complain, which was a bit "odd". Once again, we waited for another 25 mins, still no sign of our order, we finally decided to make a complaint to someone, this time a different waiter came, someone who actually cares about the customer service, thank god for that. Unfortunately she couldn't find our orders in the system "Surprise, Surprise", and the first waiter denied that he ever took our orders, WTF, he was the one that took our orders and gave us the cutleries and even encouraged us to complain and speak up about the service. After one and half hour of wait, we left without the food, had to get McDonald on the way home, such a waste of time. I appreciate the management team didn't charge us for the drinks, thats cool and all, but you can't buy customer experience with freebies, doesn't work like that. End of the day, I'd love to see this cafe to be successfully, but you can't do it with that guy still hanging around, he will ruin everything for you, I didn't mind that he missed our orders, but the fact that he lied about it and even encouraged us to complain and make a scene about it, that was the worst part, almost felt like he wants you guys to fail, that's just terrible. Sorry Dear Jervois, that was a very very poor experience for us, haven't had such bad experience in a long time, I know you are new and all, but please get rid of that guy, terrible terrible waiter and a bloody liar.

In the 5 days since they've opened I've been twice.
The coffee is excellent "Supreme" well made.
Chilled Soda Water on tap.
The food is outstanding I've had tried the Fish Finger Sandwich and the Soba Noodle Salad. Can't recommend them both more. The breakfasts also look great but have yet to try.
I'm not surprised if they were a little overwhelmed in there first weekend but I have been lucky enough to have fantastic service. In my 2 visits I have already seen the staff settling down and I'm sure that by this weekend they’ll be amazing. So nice to have a Café like this in Herne Bay.

I was soooo excited about this place opening....but it was an epic let down :( We waited for so long watching the wait staff in an incoherent frenzy, that we had to leave. So unfortunately I cannot even comment on the food, nor will I ever be able to as I refuse to return. I hope for their sake, they can get it together.

I have been watching the building of this little gem over the last few months. It has gone from a dull old restaurant to an exciting funky hip cafe.
We went on Saturday morning (the 1st Saturday that they opened) and it was packed! We did get a seat luckily which was outside under a lovely gas heater. Coffees came out within 5mins and breakfasts about 10mins after that. So happy to see that had Supreme brand coffee as its one of my favs!
Eggs bene with salmon and an extra hashbrown was my order and it was incredible! my partner had Mushrooms on toast and loved his too.
Overall the fitout is so cool, heaps going on, loads to look at.
The bathrooms are all brand new and they even have a separate baby changing room which is a plus for us mums. So nice to see that they spent time and money on the bathrooms as many cafes neglect them.
So good to see the owner got the overall recipe of this place right!
If its this good on the first few days of opening its going to be a very popular cafe in the future.
Good job I will be back often!

Had really been looking forward to this local cafe opening but very disappointing first experience. Service seemed confused, disorganised and apologetic, meals (for family of 4) arrived at different times, last two when they finally arrived were lukewarm, had to chase up our order repeatedly while waiting, and coffees took almost an hour to arrive (arrived well after the meal). Eggs benny (x2) were good sized portions but hollandaise sauce cold. Bagels good, muesli good but small portion. Cafe is set up with three or four separate seating areas, and is sparsely furnished so a bit on the noisy side. Nice selection of cabinet sweets which looked nice, also free wifi is a plus. Prices on the high side relative to Zus and Zu, Didas etc. Unfortunately we are spoiled for choice with some excellent local restaurants/cafes, and after our mediocre experience at Dear Jervois, are unlikely to return.

After three visits to Dear Jervois, I think its fair to say that while the food and coffee is exceptional, the terrible wait staff and all-round disorganised service system is a real let down for this beautiful cafe.

My first visit was only a week after opening. Staff were finding their feet, perfectly polite but not knowledgeable. But given they were quiet, the service was great and the food fantastic.

On my second visit, we were told there was a 30 minute wait. We happily ended up with a table within 10 minutes. However our coffee took over 25 minutes to arrive and our food was a long 40 minute wait when we were told there was only a 30 minute wait for food. The couple next to us ordered their coffee at the same time as us and didn't receive it until after we had finished our meals! Watching these poor people trying to flag down the harried, but inattentive staff members, ended up being ludicrous and funny to watch.

Today on my third visit - the same sort of deal - a 15 minute wait, seated after only 10 but we were not told there was any wait for food and then our meals took 35 minutes to arrive. Trying to flag down a staff member to get water took 10+ minutes. We watched other customers wander around the cafe trying to find water, napkins and cutlery while a ton of staff wandered back and forth but were clearly oblivious to customers needs. We also sat right by the service window for the kitchen today and the slow speed at which the food came out was crazy - approximately a 5-10 minute wait between each tables worth of food coming out and when the cafe is teeming with people, it's just not fast enough.

The staff are friendly enough but no one seems to be in charge, no one is ensuring customers are looked after, cafe sections seemed undefined and frankly, the shoddy customer service is letting them down. Weighing this up against the great food and coffee, its hard to say whether I'd bother to go back when we live in a city that has so many cafes that can get both parts of the equation right.

Warning... Extreme hot alert!!! Newest cafe on the Jervois Rd cafe strip, and I don't know how this works but it has a super funky interior, and it was full of the youngest trendiest cafe goers that somehow come out of the woodwork everytime a new cafe pops up ☺! There was even a waiting list....for a Sunday morning, and the food I saw being taken out looked amazing! Get here quick!

Went here yesterday with mum and I had the vege benedict- English muffin, 2 poached eggs, spinach, mushrooms and avocado. Really enjoyed this as was something a bit different to the usual! However the mushrooms were just pan fried so a wee bit bland. Mum had a side of poached eggs, avocado and hash brown which was alright but ended up costing $19? They didn't do sides of eggs so had to buy the eggs on toast but without the toast, making it quite expensive. Apart from that a good first visit with great service. Will be back soon to try the other tempting dishes!
