Review Richmond Road Cafe - Auckland Central

Alfred Sinisa
Special 50th birthday breakfast for our large family. Booked for 9:15am in the morning. Our group numbered around 13 and not a quiet bunch, thus the outside area to ourselves was excellent. The creamy mushroom, blue cheese dish was okay but no hint of blue cheese taste, a little plain. The eggs benedict was excellent. They did forget bacon for one of the dishes but was remedied. Overall excellent, a little down on the food. Us 6 kids were there with our mother who is a local to the cafe so I hope they keep their standards high. Excellent coffee and tea selections. Kumara ships are delicious.

Great little cafe obviously popular with the locals as was busy with tradies and residents alike. Had the grill was very tasty and reasonably priced for the area. well cooked not greasy and a good coffee. Staff were very friendly too.

Needed a coffee and toast before rugby/ came here cos it was the only place open. Very glad I did. Only had coffee, toast and jam but it was proper thick grain toast, just right amount of delicious jam presented nicely. Good coffee with sparkling water on side. Definitely recommend

Pretty good on all levels, with a very nice host.

♿ wheelchair accessible toilet 🚻 toilets Parking outside cafe with a few spaces. 2 entries to cafe ..ranch slider entry A nice casual style cafe with outdoor seating undercover with side flaps for the weather change . Tables a small size or join them up for bigger space or large group. I ordered the grill which costed $25 (check out my photo's) Well presented and delicious 😋 Also French toast $23 another satisfying dish. Service was good. No in house music and you can hold a good talking and listening conversation . Will probably go back another time.

Beautiful cafe, friendly staff and a good vibe when you enter. Great place to escape this cold weather. Flat white was smooth as butter and perked me up nicely this morning. Sterling Arnet Kakapo Business sales

I had a very lovely time here! Came in just to check the place out and read a book with a coffee. The flat white was good and all the staff were very kind and friendly, and it was just a nice cosy space. Also really enjoyed the old classic hits playlist in the background haha. Hopefully can come back to try some of the menu!

10/10 have only been recently coming here the past year and it never disappoints. Food is delicious! Lovely staff, quite clean and tidy. The grill and Vanilla pancakes is a must! Also try the chocolate peanut butter smoothie 🤤!! Price of meals is cheap considering the area in Central!!

Yummy brekkie, great service & a nice atmosphere/vibe.

Brioche and the date and orange scones were quite nice. Cappuccino was nothing to write home about -- served a bit hot and weak, steamed milk wasn't very good.

The cabinet food is always fresh and delicious, recently tried the menu for the first time - the creamy mushrooms are a stand out. Great chef in the kitchen. Beverage-wise, our favourite beverage is the iced chocolate, perfect heavy load of sweetness, but have enjoyed the coffee offerings here too. Great local cafe if you're in the Ponsonby area.

When I used to live in Westmere area, one of my favourite things in the morning was to grab my morning coffee and have a little chat with the friendliest staff in Richmond Road Cafe! They have such great coffee, tasty food and always welcoming atomiser. Recently, they started making an espresso martini; you must try it! Highly Recommend Richmond Road Cafe!

Wow the hot cakes were delicious and super filling! We all loved our meals (hot cakes, buttermilk chicken burger, and the grill) and plan to come back!
The decor isn’t as “hip” as some of the other near by cafes, but Richmond road café has really yum food, good cabinet food and great coffee.
It’s a little smaller than some of the other establishments too, which isn’t an issue, apart from the fact it can get quite busy at peak times.
I came with my parents, nephews and grandparents and all really enjoyed their food
Girl On The Move
Coffee and hot chocolate is always good here. Staff are always very friendly and polite. Quite busy so pays to get their early. Can't wait to come back and try the food menu.

Potatoes were lovely and the stocky bearded man who served us was just delightful. Would definately reccomend when hungover or just too lazy to cook up a feeditz.

I like this place, it just felt good and looked good. Called in for a quick breakfast before a business meeting. The service was spot on, free sparkling water and menu delivered straight away, although they were not busy so that wasn't difficult to achieve. That said there are plenty of venues who manage to fall over that pretty small hurdle! I ordered the Cheddar Pancakes with Poached Egg and Tomatoes, mainly because Ive never had them before. They were pretty darn good! Fresh tasty cherry tomato's of varying colours with basil, soft poached egg, mayo and another sauce I could not quite pick and fluffy pancakes with a bit of crispiness and I did get the Cheddar flavour. Only downside is that at the front door there were three dogs tied up having a bottom sniffing contest which they attempted to recruit me into as I left. Nothing against dogs at all but please keep the entrance clear. All and all very well done.

I could not believe we did not discover this little gem until today.

Located in Grey Lynn on Richmond Road, this place was small and looked understated, however, it was packed full of people. We soon found out just why!

The items on the menu was so unique and gourmet, from lamb kebab to gnocchi, unlike the typical things you find on breakfast menu for most cafes. Everything sounded so mouthwatering that we struggled to make a decision!

Eventually I settled for the grilled chorizo served with fried eggs, tomato, roasted capsicum, smoked goats cheese, and sourdough. The presentation was lovely. The eggs were perfectly cooked, the roasted capsicum sauce was super flavorful, and everything was so incredibly well-balanced. Husband thoroughly enjoyed his big grill too. I had a taste of his rosti and loved the texture of it! The serving sizes were massive and definitely worth the money.

For drinks, husband’s malt & honey smoothie was sweet and creamy. My green smoothie had such a vibrant and pretty green colour, and it did not taste bitter at all! Actually tasted like green apple!

All in all, I can genuinely say that I have found a new favorite cafe :)

Eggs bene with smoked Trevally.....Poached Eggs nicely cooked-firm whites and nice runny centres. Hollandaise was insipid and tasteless. Trevally was countdown prepackaged smoked fish tasting. This was sitting on a small bland bagel like bun. Atop of this small uninspired offering of food was some microgreens, because microgreens make everything fancy. In all I wouldnt get this again.

The Grill...Again 2 nicely cooked eggs. Mixed cooked baby tomatoes, bacon, dry bland toast and butter. The butchers sausage was some form of frozen bulk overly seasoned with cumin and cayenne pepper (this kind of seasoning covers up bad cuts of meat and or old meat) sausage type rectangular things. The Mushrooms must have been forgotten or there is cost cutting going on in the kitchen (avoid the chorizo as its terribly made - unless you really love gristle). But at least there were microgreens to brighten up the sadness on the plate. Glad I didnt order this.

Coffee....Was good.

Service.... Excellent! Lovely staff!

Have been here a few times. Quite uninspired food unlike the inspired wording of the menu.

Go here food brunch at least once a month. Coffee, food and service are always impeccable. Always take out of town visitors here and always come away happy.
Drea Couper
Got the eggs benedict with bacon - was cooked perfectly!! Also a custard sugar donut which was delicious

Coffee great too.
Also provided cute little blankets which was great for a chilly winter morning brunch 😊

Really nice cafe, I had pancakes which were served as a stack with mascarpone on top. The flavours were very complimentary and I would easily choose this again on the next visit. Allpress coffee is my favourite and it was good enough to have two cups! There is parking around the back/side as well.

Popped in here for brunch after giving up on the food options at Grey Lynn Park Festival. My boyfriend and I both decided later that it was one of the best brunches we've had this year. There's a great drinks menu if you feel like a cocktail with lunch (which we did) and the service is great. I had the grilled pear, prosciutto and feta salad which was just what I felt like while my partner had the special which included a delicious black pudding. It's a bit more on the expensive side but definitely worth it.

Lovely cafe with plenty of car parking. Good coffee, smoothies and food. Great service from staff. Took away one mark as there is no high chair (I see there are heaps of children and babies) so perhaps they can make their place more child-friendly.
Han's Food For Thought
We were so looked after here this week! The team helped me squeeze in with my buggy and before I knew it I had a lovely sparkling water in front of me and a coffee was on its way! Granola with the yoghurt mousse was amazing!
Wildpantry
Used to love this place but after two terrible services in a row I really don't want to waste my time going back. The $18 hand cut salad was literally cubes of vegetables dumped on a plate with not much else. A smear of labneh maybe? I mean you order an $18 salad at Little Bird and there's painstakingly time consuming techniques taken to create their dish. Marinating vegetables, dehydrated kale or corn chips, raw blended sauces etc. Come on Richmond Road Cafe.

The truffled hash was always fantastic so when they put rosti on the menu that was a no brainer order. But wow it was terrible, like eating bits of chewy plastic. Completely inedible.

I don't know what's going on there but really disappointed. To me it was always a place I could rely on for good food.

I love this place!

The staff are amazing as is the food! I always feel looked after and the place is clean and cheerful. They make you feel comfortable even if you are in your gym gear!

My favourite dish at the moment is the Agria rosti with avocado. I love the way they garnish with beautiful watercress.

Definitely go and check it out. Lovely take away juice and little sweet treats as well. :)

Haven't been to RRC in a while and I now remember why, the price - GOD DAM!!!! We are talking dinner prices here people for bloody breakfast! The food is good but for the following, not justifiable for this kind of money (I actually went digging in my meal thinking I'd find gold or precious stones)

- smoothie
- iced coffee
- piccolo
- two mains
- side of fries
=$78.00

With the amount of great cheap eats around the city, it made sense why the place was over half empty.

Been meaning to go in here for years FINALLY did yesterday for lunch before heading to the George Fm in the Park thing, I had the procuitto bene and my friend the big breakfast, both sooooooooo good!
We will deffo be back thank you, your staff too are awesome! Obviously all very happy working in such a cool cafe!

Me and cousin wen to Richmond road this morning for a coffee and something to eat, I wasn't willing to spend a lot of money as am little tight at the moment. So I got a coffee and a side salad, the coffee was $4.80 and the salad $8.00, it was yummy, then when I went to pay they charge me 17 dollars I didn't think this was right so I went back to ask and the man told me my salad cost $11.00 I didn't ask for an $11 dollar salad there was a reason I asked for the $8 salad which was a tiny little bowl, I didn't get my money back at all not happy will deffinately not be going there again.

Had such a nice breakfast here, amazing coffee and super super service. I forget his name but he was so friendly and would make the menu work to whatever you want. Eggs were delicious, avocado (a whole half! I had to check I was still in Auckland!) and the 5 grain toast perfectly cooked. Saaa good.
Food 24/7
A nice Saturday treat for my partner and cousin visiting from Taiwan. We were greeted by lovely friendly staff and seated immediately .

We took our time going thorough the menu as everything looked delicious . I ordered he Avocado, tomato, wheat free rye with soft eggs .
My cousin had the eggs Benedict with bacon and my partner ordered the butchers's sausages with fried egg, crushed potato, caramelised onion and cherry tomatoes.

I would have given this place a 5+but Food took quite a long time to arrive and they got my order wrong so had to wait for even longer .

All our meals were ON point , the flavours worked so well together and everything cooked perfectly .
10/10 for my poached eggs , possibly one of the best poached eggs I have had in a long time !!

What I also love about Richmond Road Cafes is they offer free sparking water !

Very sad to give them 4.5 but I can't be bias😅😅😅😅

A friend and I decided to try the Richmond Road Cafe. There was an interesting and diverse choice of food ranging from all day breakfast items to Wagu burger. I went for the asparagus omelette and my friend went for the chicken salad washed down with a glass of the house red. The food was very good but the flat whites we finished with were awful - lukewarm and watery. The service was friendly and attentive and the cafe would have got a better score but for the coffee.
Laynah K
Amazing service. I got a smoked Tuna sandwich which was yummy, mocha was perfect and the marshmellows that come with it are OMG!!!!

Nice little set up ☺

Late weekend lunch, the cafe is small but not crowded. Staff are very friendly and service is top notch. Food was delicious even though portions are quite small. I loved my whitebait fritter and ice coffee. Also have milse dessert available.

Awesome little cafe, with good choice of nice food, good coffees, nice juices and friendly and attentive staff.
A little bit out of the way now we live in Birkenhead though, but will try and get back there.

Came here for lunch on a saturday. Partner ordered the kingfish and i got the lamb shank. The shank was delicious and the king fish was good too. The only down side of the king fish was it was drenched in so much olive oil, maybe a squeeze of lemon with some picked ginger on top would taste even better. Service was very good and plenty of parking around the area.

Richmond Rd is a little gem, like all the Hip Group cafes, the service is always perfect...it's hard to fault them. Consistently consistent.

Likewise the coffee is on point. The food is a wee bit adventurous, interesting combinations and unusual ingredients (like my stinging nettle omelette)...but certainly a welcome change from boring old eggs bene.

My daughter is a big fan of the pancakes and the macarons.

Just when my unqualified palate was starting to get a bit jaded from a few too many lacklustre outings, where one dish can sometimes blend into another, out pops this pinnacle of lunch superiorness! Partially my fault for never having been here before, although the few times I tried it was always too busy. Without a doubt the gnocchi with cauliflower, kale and pancetta that I had surpassed anything that I expected, being a masterpiece in presentation and flavour. Probably my favourite lunch dish this year.... Of course everyone very friendly and the dessert cabinet also looked sensational!

I had lunch with a friend here on Saturday. As we arrived, we were greeted by a lovely waiter and a glass of sparkling water. It was busy but not overly crowded – perfect to catch up with a friend over a meal and a coffee.

The menu can be a little confusing but our waiter was happy to answer any questions that we had. I ordered the raw chopped salad ($18) which was full of delicious raw vegetables, pine nuts and a green goodness dressing. I also ordered a side of smoked fish ($6) which matched the salad perfectly.

My friend ordered the Roast chicken salad with spelt, apple and walnuts ($20). She said hers was also really yummy.

The food and coffee here is incredible and I will definitely be back again soon.

Ordered the seared kingfish, the avocado + tomato salad with flaxseed crackers, and a pear watermelon juice special. Was very good overall and have some nice cabinet food to takeaway, great cafe and would recommend

Great service from happy relaxed knowledgeable staff
A pleasure to eat in
Great food and sensational coffee
Easy parking outside
Just a great place
Be back here for sure

Run by the same people who run Ortolana (Hip Group) this eatery doesn't disappoint!
The menu leaves many patrons a little confused with interesting and exciting new food combinations, but it's so refreshing having something a little less mainstream.
I have to admit, I had to google a few items on the menu.
Pictures below is the gnocchi, but I could happily recommend the pancakes, the sausage, or the kingfish. All amazing dishes, and all surprisingly suitable for breakfast!
Andrew
Friendly service, beef rib delicious, good coffee, complimentary sparkling water, but baked eggs with berlotti beans TERRIBLE - beans undercooked, under-seasoned, the ciabatta almost burnt, the dish was generally flavourless. Oh and we were not informed of the specials so missed out on the whitebait! Won't be back..

Ate breakfast here on Sunday as we were having a lazy weekend. The staff were all very professional and pleasant, and the interior was spotlessly clean. I chose the spinach with poached egg on truffled agria loaf - no need for an explanation as I know my potatoes. It was very tasty and perfectly cooked, and nice to have a breakfast that isn't heart attack sized. Hubby had the Grill which on this day could also include their own black pudding, and it was duly added. He pronounced everything to be excellent but I felt I needed to check out the black pudding myself (big favourite of mine) so I stole a bit from under his nose. It was Very Good. In fact I would buy it if they sold it. The coffee was good, and it was a pleasant morning out. The thing stopping me giving me a 5 star rating is hard to put a finger on ... it was all a bit austere perhaps, a lack of warmth in the welcome, and all just a bit too shiny somehow. Strange, as normally the Hip Group tend to inject a bit more persona into their projects. Let me say again, though, the food was excellent, its just not always all about the food.
Emma W
The menu is very limited, seems repetitive and eggs come with just about everything. Plus, the waitresses must need to explain to every group what the agria loaf is, just call it hash brown or potato cake!

The smashed eggs dish looked under cooked and the squid dish had and odd combination of flavours which did not work together.

They also need to improve the cabinet food as the sandwich I had was soggy all along one side of the bottom due to the tomato filling.

Find somewhere else on Richmond Road unless you want to pay $20 for small portions of average food.
Craig Wallis
I ate there for the second time recently. The food was ok except for the fact that I was served a cooked tomato that was rotten. It had been cut open when I received it and was at the point where the seeds were black. This was clearly not a marginal situation. What was worse was the dismissive response for the waitress saying that it is a fact of life in summer weather. There was no attempt to make it right or improve the experience for me. I won't be back and may not bother with any of the others in the chain if that's how they operate.
Brian Smith
I have visited this café on several occasions. Nice clean place. Very busy and the Allpress coffee is good most of the time. Very professional service and food is good. The waiter was very prompt and the kitchen was fast considering how busy the place was.

Had a great lunch & good coffee.
Service was incredible - staff constantly walking the floor ensuring water glasses full, plates cleared etc. Free sparkling water a really great extra. Food was very good & atmosphere very enjoyable. Shaded deck a great spot to while away the afternoon.
Will be back soon.

Richmond Road Cafe always delivers on exceptional, well priced (for Auckland!) food. They have a great range of menu options. On my most recent trip I ordered buttermilk pancakes with a rubarb compote and citrus mascarpone. The pancakes were lovely and light and the mascarpone cut through the sweetness of the rubarb. For a beverage I tried their banana and passionfruit smoothie which was ok - I would have liked more passionfruit but not a big issue. Service is ok - it could be better and a lot more welcoming and friendly. This Cafe does get REALLY busy on weekends but I have never found the noise to be an issue. A cafe well worth checking out!
Charissa
Had breakfast here today and it was very nice.Friendly staff and food was delicious.Coffee needs a little tweaking but overall very nice and welcoming!
Kay Adams
Had a delightful time at this cafe. We shared a very nice smoothie which was lime and passionfruit between 3 of us which was no problem at all for the lovely Scottish waiter. Our meals were great the Eggs Bene, Vege Breakfast and Braised bianchi di spagna beans. My vege breakfast did come out only slightly warm which was a little frustrating as it should be coming out hot. Will return to try the gorgeous looking buttermilk pancakes

I go to this café every day for a coffee as it is the closest one to where I work and it is generally quite good. The staff are exceptional, service is very friendly and fast and the even open the doors for you if they are anywhere nearby.

The only thing that let them down really is that their coffee is very hit and miss. Sometimes burnt, sometimes over-extracted and sometimes the milk is horrible.

If there was a closer café to me then I would probably have switched by now for coffee but go there for the food!
Lavinia Isaac King
The coffee was bitter for the first few times I went their but it has gotten better
I have had the eggs bene salmon srambled eggs which i love the service of your staff are excellent they are always checking to see if you are ok or need something else which is lovely and I love the freshly squeezed juices I always have one when I have time to eat over all I would recommend Richmond Road Cafe to everyone
Cupy Dee
Been there several times for breakfast! A little bit on the pricy side, but beautiful cooked food! Loved their butter milk hotcake! The orange sauce and almond matched perfectly! The ground angus bacon/cheeseburger was very yummy too, especially with their fire egg on top! The cabinet also full of amazing looking goodies!
Rebecca MacDonald
I went for lunch today at the Richmond Rd cafe with friends. I was keen to try them out as one of the restaurants of the Hip group as some of their restaurants are my favourite places!

My friend ordered a blueberry smoothie which didn't taste overly berry but she asked for a pear and watermelon juice instead which was delish!

I ordered the market fish, which was amazing! Pan fried snapper, with a capsicum, corn and tomato relish! A perfect clean lunch, I would definitely go again.
Yummy Auckland
Love this place for breakfast because they do particularly good cooked eggs! We like the atmosphere, service and style of this cafe. The menu has lots of different options, and there is also cabinet food and sweeter treats available for alongside your coffee. A great coffee stop or somewhere for a weekend meal.
