We have been going to/ ordering from Bunga Raya for years. I placed my largest order yesterday for my birthday celebration. The restaurant owners were so gracious in helping me choose appropriate portion sizes and mix of dishes for my quests. They even have delicious vegan options available. My quests absolutely loved the food. Every dish was amazing and unique. Will definitely be ordering again!

Food is absolutely amazing. staff are excellent, very enthusiastic and hospitable. I would definitely recommend going with a group as they do large platters to share so you can try a variety of things.

If you are homesick or you haven't been to Malaysia? Then this restaurant is just right for you. They have the most authentic Malaysian Food in New Zealand. Operated by an amazing couple, Rita & John. They have dedicated their lives providing the very best of Malaysian Cuisine. This is definitely my goto place when I'm feeling homesick. It truly takes me back home to Singapore and Malaysia. Try their Wan Dan Mix Noodle. It's amazing!
Jasmine
Best Malaysian food I’ve had in Auckland! Super flavourful, delicious and cooked perfectly. Wish we came for dinner so we could get the bigger portions! The aunty is also so friendly and treated us like family. Can’t wait to be back to try everything else.

Hands down the best food in Auckland. Love coming here! Both Dine in and takeaway is amazing. Staff are smiling and are very helpful and friendly! I will be back in November for my birthday meal (second year in a row now actually lol 🙂💛

First time trying this place and it was a solid meal, we got the Hainanese chicken, chicken curry with roti and wan dan hor (flat noodles with prawns and chicken in egg soup) I personally recommend the Hainanese chicken and Wan dan Hor, I was under the weather and this food was very comforting, highly recommend!

Very friendly service, very yummy food. A little expensive for my taste (both times l've eaten there, my share was in the late 20s-early 30s). The waitress took photos of our birthday celebration, and lead the whole restaurant in singing happy birthday.

So delicious food! We had the oatmeal prawns, home made tofu and 3mixed veges, and everyone enjoyed their meal! The kids who are fussy eaters loved it too. The staff are friendly and helpful as well. One of our friends joined us unannounced and can only have gluten free food. The proprietor was able to make a quick call in informing the chef to use gluten free flour to cook when she found out at the last minute. I haven't been to Bunga Raya in years but I can see the owners have very loyal returning customers and they are all on a first name basis with their regulars. This just shows you how not all Asian restaurants have bad service. Bunga Raya DEFINITELY has good service and great food! 👍

Immitation Sharkfin soup was on point. Taste perfect with a dash of black vinegar. Most importantly, no shark was harmed. CKT was perfect with excellent wok hei. Highly recommended. Staff especially, Apple was a delight. Thanks Apple. 👏👏👏

Eating here is always a vibe. The food is so authentic, the auntie is so lovely (she knows more about how much u should eat than you do) and the atmosphere is great. Would recommend to anyone wanting malaysian food in akl. Fave place to go to for malaysian. Only thing is that you need to book

It was an experience! We decided to go to Bunga Raya restaurant for dinner and it was best decision of the day! Welcoming, kind, funny, super positive and energetic owner helped us to choose meals. Service was super quick and I couldn't stop eating! We planned to take leftovers home, but at the end of dinner our table was empty. Highly recommend this place and I'm definitely coming back!

Great, friendly service. The staff were so friendly and recommended good food options. They also stopped us from ordering what would have been waaayyyyy too much food. I always appreciate when they do that as you know it means they value your experience and want you to enjoy the quality not just quantity. Food was also delicious and portions were generous!

For sure, one of Auckland’s best Malaysian restaurants. More reflective of Malaysian Chinese food, given the availability of pork and certain dishes on offer. Go for the XO Squid and Oatmeal Shrimp. Don’t like seafood? Then their Beef Rendang is excellent.

First time dining here and we love this place! Reminded us of the Chinese restaurants back in Malaysia. Came here specifically for the sizzling tofu and it didn’t disappoint. It was so silky. The XO prawns and the wonton soup was delicious. Can’t wait to try their other dishes. Staff were so friendly and inviting.

Had dinner at Bunga Raya for the first time. We ordered XO Chicken and Fried Tofu. Both are scrumptious! XO Chicken have that kick and spicy that lingers around for a while, the spice is just perfect and does not overwhelm you. The fried tofu (homemade with egg) is superb as well, as the sweet chili sauce that come with it compliment the tofu. And the hospitality of the owner and staff makes me feel at home! Will definitely recommend and come here again.

First time there! The food was authentic! Service was great and the owners is happy to recommend dishes. Big sized servings. 3 dishes was more than enough for a family of 4. We had enough for takeaways too! Thinking about going back again soon!

Hands down the best Malaysian in Auckland!!!! Everytime I go I ask the owners to pick what I should have and they are always so helpful and friendly :) On top of that the food is 10/10 every single time!!! My must try items are the tofu and the wan tan hor. The tofu is hand made and I’ve never had anything like it - it is amazing, and I normally do not like tofu! All reasonably priced and well worth it for how good the food is. I would recommend booking as they are super popular!

It was my first time in the neighborhood and my friends recommended this place and it exceeded my expectations! Great food and great staff. All the dishes served were flavourful and fresh. I look forward to coming here again with family soon.

The last time I visited Bunga Raya was a good 5+ years ago and I had fond memories of the food. Decided to give them another go as I was craving Malaysian food and they are conveniently located out West and do takeaways. I have to say the food wasn't as good as I remembered, we ordered the Hainanese Chicken Rice, the chicken was really dry and rice was soggy. I did like the chilli sauce that came with it thought. The Ipoh fried bee hoon wasn't too bad either but I felt could have had more of a 'wok' flavour to it which would have lifted the taste. I definitely needed to eat it with a chilli sauce or sambal to enjoy it. Lastly the Lor Mee, unfortunately the taste wasn't there at all, the whole dish was bland and lack of seasoning, I could tell old vegetables were used in the dish and just couldn't taste much. Overall, the food is acceptable but pretty average and not what I remembered it to be, I would have loved to have written a more positive review. However, I would still like to go back and try some of their other dishes and give a second opinion. Thumbs up for service though.

This is one of my mum's favorite Malaysian restaurants in Auckland and she always orders their fish ling collar soup and again it never let's her down in terms if taste and portions. We also got the seafood char kuey tow which was packed with massive prawns and noodles were fried to perfection with the "wok" (aka char) flavour. I would recommend the chicken curry here too if you enjoy a creamy and savory sauce packed with flavour. The only thing that was a slight let down since the last time we came was the Laksa, it was lacking depth and richness which it previously had. Otherwise, I would recommend this restaurant for their Chinese Malaysian dishes.

I had been wanting to try this place for a long time because when my colleague knew that I lived in Malaysia before New Zealand he always asked me if I had tried this restaurant, that was probably 10 years ago and almost every time he sees me in the lunch area, he always asked me if I had been here. It is quite far from where I live so the prospect of getting to this place is quite small but there was one opportunity when we tramped in one of the tracks of Waitakere ranges one afternoon.

I was disappointed by the meals we had this week. Poorly presented re-heated old food. Not fresh. Rough excuses were not good enough. Very POOR
Lukas
Hands down the best Asian/Malaysian food in New Lynn. You will not regret it, we love the XO squid, the Soft Shell crab is heaven and we love the Roti with curry sauce. We don’t even get the rice because the protein is amazing. A 6/5 place in Auckland!

Third visit to Bunga Raya in 4 years and the food still tastes good. Portion sizes have dropped a little but the food still comes out quick and the owner is still talkative as ever.

The Xo prawn/chicken are a must have from here. Plenty of flavour & tastes delicious.
The fried malaysian style fried rice is decent too and so is the sweet & sour pork.

My advice would be to go before 8.30 as if you go after there's a sense of urgency to shut shop & everything is rushed as the kitchen closes at around 8.45pm and you feel like you need to eat quickly.

Other than that I would definitely recommend this place for good malaysian food 😊.

Food : ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Price : ⭐⭐⭐
Ambience : ⭐⭐⭐
Staff : ⭐⭐⭐
Overall : ⭐⭐⭐

Absolutely loved the Mi Goreng and Ling Fish Curry Laksa! Easily one of the best Malay restaurants we have tried. Will definitely be returning to try their other things on the menu!

Absolutely loved this place and the atmosphere. The host/ waitress was such a delight. Loved her passion to serve the customers. And the food came out in 10mins and tasted heavenly. Can’t wait to go back here for some xo chicken!

If you love Malaysian or just sick of the trendy “Asian fusion” you MUST try Bunga Ray!
It’s usually pretty busy, so I’d suggest booking.
My favourites here is the satay tofu and the deep fried king prawns (as pictured), but to be honest, everything’s pretty delish.
It’s really awesome having all of this variety in new Lynn, that’s what makes it a surprisingly awesome place to eat out!
The owner is awesome, she reminds me of my Chinese aunties! lol
Love her!

Love this place. The food is amazing. And the service is great. Feels like you are just walking into your aunty’s house. Love the hainan chicken, the XO squids are to die for and the coconut prawns.
Nicola
Ordered Roti, chicken curry and XO squid. Food came out very fast. It was hot, fresh and tasty. More expensive than your usual Malaysian but fully worth it! Taste, quality and quantity are all what you’d hope for. I’ve been several times and ordered different dishes and there has yet to be something I haven’t enjoyed.

Our new favorite chinese malaysian restaurant. Food was great. The kampong tofu was really nice, the oatmeal prawn was not too bad, the spare ribs was pretty good. Priced around 26$ per meal, so it wasn’t as cheap as other malaysian restaurant, but taste great.
Janine
Yummy food and very accomodating staff..Owner is very kind..Food here are so delicious (masarap in our lingo) and the serving is huge good for 3-4 person. Price is acceptable, $25-30 each person in a full course. We definitely come back😋😁👍

I've never befriended a Malaysian family. I think I must, because if the hospitality you feel walking into Auckland's Malay restaurants is anything to go by, it's a warm and loving experience.

Recently I've eaten at Sri Pinang on K. Rd, my favourite experience on the night was the maitre d's presence. She walked the floor like we were eating in her house, big smiles, lots of chat and even a hug to end the night (yes I'd had a bit of wine that night).

Last night I visited Bunga Raya which I hear is a bit of an institution in New Lynn. They've been serving Malay food for decades, it shows. The entire restaurant was full of ex-pat Malaysians, this was a good sign. The interior is simple, with barely any thought gone into decor, with my anticipation building I felt this was a good sign, does this mean all efforts then go into the delicious food?

Like my recent experience in Sri Pinang, the service again like a big welcoming hug. Instantly I felt at home.

The combination entree - 6 deep fried forgettable morsels with a sweet chili dipping sauce, not a great start.

Slow Beef in Rich Coconut Sauce - I have no idea why they call it this. This dish is Beef Rendang. I'd like to think the majority of diners these days are cultured enough to know what a Beef Rendang is without the need to "dumb" it down. Anyways, this was everything you'd want it to be, soft, luscious, melt in the mouth slow cooked beef. Some Rendang's are cooked too sweet, packed with too much sugar, this wasn't.

Honey Garlic Chicken - These were sweet and sticky adult lollipops.

The food here won't blow you away, but it is cooked with enough love and tasty enough to keep it on your radar for future visits.

Oh and btw, they're BYO for wine!

One of the families favourite in New Lynn. Bunga Ray has been there for a long time, serving authentic Malaysian food and it does come at higher price bracket. Their kampong tofu, butter prawns, hainanese chicken are usually our go-to.

I come here offen for their fish noodle soup; this time we were here especially for Low Sang - a traditional dish for chinese new year in Malaysia, and there's a little activity we have to do just before having it, it means the coming year will bring us luck, loves, health and wealth, this makes lots of fun and laughter. The Asam Fish , Four Kings (vege) and hainanese Chicken are always my favours here, the Low Sang we had here is the most authentic in Auckland according to my Malaysian friend. Thanks for the wonderful night Bunga Raya.

Next door to MacDonalds opp Denny's in New Lynn! There you go, no excuses about not finding the place. Finding a car park maybe 50/50 around here. Rang after work and attempted to book for Dinner @ 7ish for 8 peeps, Malaysian auntie laughed and scolded me at the same time (as Aunties do) "all book up at 7, Can take 5 or 8pm can take lah, You must book earlier, very busy at 7pm lah" We took the 8pm slot with my o'seas relatives, fluked parking nearby and arrived only to see others waiting who hadn't booked. Very popular place, a good mix of ethnicities, young student friends and family groups dining here. Vibrant atmosphere here ,maybe it's the good weather or just the way New Lynn is? Aunty here runs the floor and she has a big personality, she suggested some dishes for us and made my visitors feel welcomed while making them laugh. She certainly worked the floor. My guests are not very adventurous concerning ethnic food and do not like spicy, Aunty was only too happy to tone it down. She provided cut chilly for me n wifey to spice up our plates. We ordered the Netsam prawns, covered in coconut, well cooked very flavorsome, the sweet n sour pork and the house fried chicken were excellent. The tofu and the stuffed eggplant was nicely pan/stir fried and these disappeared before my eyes as our visitors had never tried these dishes before? We will come again to try out the usual Malaysian staple foods we typically order. Service here is quick and friendly with good personal touches. Bunga is a good place to dine in esp with big groups and with the N.L mall next door good for doing movie and meal deal. The other good thing with Bunga is Denny's and McD's being so close it's good to pop over for desserts or ice creams to finish the day or evening?

Great customer service and amazing food! XO prawns are truly the best I’ve had! The portions are very large and good value for your money. Would definitely go again!

The restaurant was busy and bustling, warm and happy. The dishes that came out of the kitchen were large - share plates. Ordered the Char Kway Teow and it was delicious. Also ordered the Squid with XO sauce - rich and tasty. Will be going back in the future.

This place is always busy and booked up which proves that their food is good.

I have only dined a couple of times, and both times has been a happy-belly-filled ending.

Good food, good service. Fast dining atmosphere but they do not make you feel rushed.

Wonderful Baba & Nyonya food. Lit up my taste buds. The lady boss was friendly, and apologetic when booking was full (always). I guess it’s quite popular. Excellent even for Malaysian standard 🤤
Marcus Lau
I used to dine at this restaurant quite often when I lived in New Lynn. The Malaysian foods there were fairly above average and authentic too.

I normally had their mee goreng, sambal fried rice and nasi lemak with chicken curry. All these dishes tasted quite nice. However, the sambal for their nasi lemak was not as good, it was a bit sourish and no charred taste. There were several occasions that the sambal was served cold with the nasi lemak, I thought that they might have just taken the chilled sambal out of the fridge and served immediately along with the nasi lemak without having to heat up the sambal at all.

A good sambal needs to be fried thoroughly for at least an hour to get the fried and charred fragrance and essence, and scarlet red in colour. It is best served with at least room temperature or luke warm, but not cold.

The lady owner was very friendly and always greeted her customers warmly especially the regular ones.

The restaurant was always bright, neat, tidy and clean.

The biggest setback for this restaurant is that they adopt a price differentiation strategy. The prices of all the dishes for their dinner are nearly double of the prices for their lunch. I personally do not concur with this kind of price differentiation approach. Thus, I normally just go for their lunch.

Food & Beverage : 6/10
Service : 7/10
Price : 3/10
Ambience : 7/10

I've heard many good comments about the authentic Malaysian food in here and been here once many years ago. Coming back here again doesn't disappointed me much except for the service. I've heard that they are a very busy place and you need to make a booking so I did. First impression over the phone wasn't so pleasant as the lady sounded impatient and wanna to hang up as soon as she can. When we were there we sort of can understand as they were really busy. We saw people who walked in without booking being turned away. There was a big group of people having birthday celebration and we could see the owner kept entertaining them. But when comes to us she sounded very cold tone. Nevertheless, we really enjoyed the food. We ordered the famous XO chicken, their special Kampung tofu, chilli squid and signature Malaysian food fried fish in noodles and we liked them all. I wonder why there's no menu on Zomato, hmmmmm......

Hands down the best Malaysian restaurant in Auckland! Although I come here very rarely, I know it's a family favourite. The food is authentic as can be and so delicious! The restaurant is cosy and always busy! The staff are super friendly and helpful. Great value for money, great service and most importantly great food. What more could you ask for?
Zac

Love everything about this place, excellent food, great service! Went there today after a few months and the food and service is exactly how it was when we first started coming here! Love all the suggestions the staff give us to try different things. Definitely one of my favorite eateries in auckland!

This Restaurant used to serve up a memorable dining experience and dishes that would excite the palate. Sad to say standards have dropped. their signature dishes are still 'ok' - XO chicken, tamarind flavoured pork and the Coconut prawns. However we were shocked at the appetiser we ordered - $10 for 8 spring rolls. There's no question that these were simply fried supermarket bought spring rolls. We can name the brand too!!! ($6 for around 50 pieces)

Complained about this and the manager did not even want to hear the complaint. Just kept saying, "that's how we do our spring rolls" and was very rude to my wife who phoned in. This is a good indicator of what's happened to the food here - no respect for customers = who cares about the food.

Very sad that a once well liked New Lynn hot spot is serving up cold service now. Hope you take customer feedback on board and return to your old glory...... We miss you.

Such delicious food! Staff were so friendly and helped us order and was spot on with everything! Will definitely be back often! Owner got the whole restaurant to sing happy birthday to a customer. Very lovely atmosphere, didn’t feel rushed to leave. Very busy so book table in advance. Great for groups as portions are made for sharing.
Randy
Love the food here and perfect place for BYO wine. We got a variety of dishes to share and the prawn dish was outstanding. We also had tofu, beef and chicken dishes. (Not a fancy place but good food for sure).
Haryanti
ordered nasi goreng and mee goreng tonight. Price is reasonable because it is such big portion. Taste is really authentic malay. Flavourful dishes! esp the nasi goreng. Staff is very friendly!!
Cherish D'Cotta
If you are looking for authentic Malaysian food this place is it!!!! Never dissapointed ever. Food is fresh, tasty, great variety! The thought of it makes me salivate everytime. Highly recommended!!

I have learnt from here that Malaysian Chinese food are all about fried noodles and fried rice, many different styles. nothing more. visited there 3 times, all felt regretted. at least I went there 3 times.
Rosanne Choy
Came in for lunch with the family.
Ordered some chicken, pork, noodles, and chicken flavoured rice. The sauce for the pork was amazing. Adding it to anything could make everything taste better.

What a great way to celebrate Chinese New Year with a Prosperity Toss. The waitress explained that each vegetable represent luck for the oncoming year and with some raw salmon and clink of bowls, we used our chopsticks and threw the salad in the air!!! Great for a group. I forgot to mention the plum dressing that bound the salad together. Yum. What a start before the mains. Kung Po chicken, fried tofu, spinach, steamed snapper. Yum. The owner is very friendly. This restaurant is an institution.

Leon Tan
Great food mostly authentic. Favourites are Nasi Lemak, fish head curry and chicken rice. Family restaurant atmosphere. Usually busy at night so bookings essential.

Called up at 9.20pm for a wonton soup for pick-up. I was told that they're kitchen closes at 9pm every night. It says closing time is at 10pm. Not happy.

Lady who took our order waved my mum to shush when she was trying to explain what she wanted. Spoke over my mum like she knew better which really put us off. Then when my mum's food arrived they didn't even get the order right. When we asked for it to be remade, we got told off by another lady who insisted that was how it was meant to be made.
My main was served first and was cold by the time the third main came out.
Don't think I'd come here again as the food was okish bar one dish I actually enjoyed but really don't need to see people talk over or talk down to my mum when we've taken her out for a birthday lunch.

First time ordering an Amazing wonton soup with even better customer service. Thank you very much, will definatley be back again, would recommend this place to anyone

Cockroach alert!! It took me a long time to post this but now that nandos is under inspection for finding a cockroach on the bench, well imagine finding a cockroach on your food! This is beyond words and i finally have the guts to post. We have been coming to this resto for the last 10yrs for special occassions and weve come to know the owner. During my nanas 1st death anniversary, we visited this resto for dinner and ordered fried tofu with garlic. Only to find fried tofu with fried cockroach! It was actually my 6yrs old daughter who spotted it. We couldnt believe it and told the owner, her excuse was pretty lame. Apparently they were going under renovation and dust, insects etc have fallen from the roof and straight to our food. That was her excuse. We have never come back since then. Posting so people are aware.

Superb food and they all came out very fast. Customer service is pretty good. I enjoyed every single dish that we ordered. I will definitely come back.

The satay chicken is so yum and the food comes very quick. The workers are friendly and the restaurant interior is quite nice. Would recommend to come here with a group and share the food. :)
Aimee.
We always come here as a family of 6-8 and order all sorts of dishes to share. The food comes out super fast like within 10 mins the whole table is full. Service is good and efficient and all the staff are friendly and bilingual. The owners know us and always make sure that we are well looked after and enjoying everything. The food is amazing and super flavourful and tasty.

I'm not always keen to visit Malaysian restaurants because of some experience I've had in a couple of similar places here in Auckland.

Today my wife and a friend decided to go here and I was surprised with how good the food and overall experience turned out to be! Amazing staff/owners welcome you here and the food is served very fast and is absolutely delicious.

My only tip is that the quantity is very generous so don't order too many dishes at once unless you are super hungry. We tried the chicken curry, prawn fried rice, butter prawns, xo chicken and some rotis today and everything expect the rice was tasty!

Will certainly be back here soon.
Mocha
Amazing! The staff here are so friendly and welcoming, they feel like family. The food tastes really good too. Will definitely be coming back.
Ravi
A good customer service. The food is amazing as well as spicy. You have to book before you dine in. The location is good near the Lynn Mall.

This place is awesome!! Third time we have been here now. Firstly the owner lady and staff are very friendly and funny a very family oriented feel. Secondly the food was exceptional, real authentic malaysian food with huge portions and absolutely bursting with freshness and flavor. This time we had the XO squid(pictured) which is hands down the best squid i have ever eaten and the dish is well priced and can comfortably feed 2 adults. We also had the rotti bread(pictured) which was lovely and soft but still flakey and crispy but not too heavy and came with this beautiful sauce that was packed full of flavor. We also had some spring rolls (forgot to take pic) they were nice and not massive or too filling. Thirdly the owner was honest with us when we tried to order 3 mains between 2 of us, she told us the dishes are massive and we are not going to finish it and "save your money to come back again" which i thought was really neat and she was right. All of the above got us both full as a bull and rolling out the door. Total cost of the lovely evening $46. Would highly recommend to anyone but make sure you book as they are always busy. 😄
Chico
The food at Bunga Raya are GOOD.
They nailed taste, texture & temperature with fresh ingredients. A great place for a big group to enjoy delicious dishes together.
The appearance of the restaurant is casual, so it's good for casual gatherings.

Visited this morning around 11.30am (just after opening time), there was already 1 customer there happily enjoying his meal. Husband and I shared a Wat Tan Hor for lunch as he had a late breakfast while I slept in hehe.

Food was quick to be served, and tasted amazing. You know you've hit jackpot when you take a sip of the gravy and the first thing you taste is the Wok Hei (comparable to roadside stalls in Malaysia) despite the light colour. Looks can be deceiving!
The noodles tasted fresh and well seasoned, the prawns were also tasting fresh and were perfectly cooked. The eggy sauce just slipped right down....

Service was perfect - they brought us a pot of hot tea just as we sat down, and when I said we were sharing they also brought small bowls over so that we could eat from our own dishes not the main plate. As we left, they were quick to clean the table (very thoroughly I might add) to prepare for the next guests. Very friendly staff, I suspect it's all family :)

Glad we went in early, because as we prepared to leave at around noon, 3 separate groups arrived for lunch pretty much at the same time, and I'm sure more would have been on their way. I can see why other reviewers mention booking for dinner!

This place is slightly pricier compared to other Asian places ($14.90 for what we got, at lunchtime), but worth every penny. No charge for the tea unlike some others. We will be back to try the Wat Tan Hor with mixed noodles (and other dishes too!).
Patrick Tong
Haven't been here for a few years now. Haven't changed a bit. Came here for lunch with my parents at about 12ish. Surprised not busy at all. Out of about 11 to 12 tables only 4 tables occupied when we walked in. Not sure whether because it's weekdays or we are too early. Hahaha!

Food was tasty, flavourful. Came out quite fast and hot too. Service was prompt, friendly, and helpful. Decor was basic. Just 3 to 4 pictures on the wall. Nothing fancy.

Apparently, dinner time is quite busy. Would come back to try their dinner menu.
Shirley Liew
This restaurant never disappoint us. All the staffs here are super friendly and the food is so flavourful. After trying almost all the Malaysian restaurant in Auckland, I truly believe that this place is the best.
Jonathan
Average food and overpriced. Have been here twice now. First time, the laksa was a bit watered-down and small serving. Second time the roti chanai was ok - the chicken curry was not bad but the amount of roti provided was pathetically small. For $16 it was a ripoff.

Won't be going back. There are better Malaysian eateries around.
Steve Hall
Food was good, definitely recommend the XO chicken, and also had the hainanese chicken rice which was nice
Seems a popular little place and staff were friendly and helpful with choosing foods if don't know Malaysian cuisine

Went for lunch but willl be going back to try xo squid and prawns
Vinmanrules
This place requires a reservation so book before you go. The food is good and quantity is sufficient. But I can't say it's worth the price though. There's plenty of great Malaysian places in Auckland which serve similar or better food for a lot less money.
Smith
After moving to the area and hearing lots of positive things about BR, it wasn't a standout. Coming from a suburb on the Shore that has numerous Malaysian restaurants that are all awesome it was underwhelming.
Mehak Talwar
Absolutely loved the food. We ordered Prawn sambal and prawn and chicken fried rice. It was delicious, service was quick and the owners and staff went an extra mile and made us feel special as we were celebrating a friend's birthday.

Would love to go back. The portion sizes were quite big, there were three of us and we ordered 2 mains and there was still leftovers.

Second visit here was as pleasant as the first. Came with my grandparents this time and the chefs are staff were very catering and the foid was delicious. We ordered XO eggplant which I especially loved. Can't wait to come back again :p
If you like Malaysian cuisine then this is your best pick in Auckland.
This place is always busy so it's better to go here with a booking.
Nice decor and great ambience it surely is a fine dine restaurant.
Butter prawn curry, Haianese chicken, sambal fish, Haianese chicken rice and Kway Teow soup are my favourites.
Love visiting this place. Have always had a good experience.
Porky Pig
One of our favourites for lunch. Always warm and friendly with plenty of tasty dishes to choose from. My pick is the Sambal Fish, and Mrs. PorkyPig goes for the Mee Goreng KL style.

Recommended.

Would be one of the better Malaysian restaurants in Auckland. Even though the restaurant looks dated and blend, but I think it's well known in the new Lynn community. And it's always packed, think I try to go on a week night and I had to wait 20min for a seat.
Female owner is nice n friendly even stopped me from over ordering! Prior to ordering I was thinking the price was a bit over with some dishes, but after the food came I changed my mind!
Had the fish gill soup with rice noodle and the coconut prawn. Both amazing flavours and super large portions. Will be back with a few friends to try more different food!

Came here last night with my family. MAKE A BOOKING ! Good thing we rang in to see what time we could come in but downfall was there were no spaces available till about 8:20pm.

We sat down and the waitress got my sons high chair his cutlery which in other restaurants we have to ask for but I was very impressed at how "on to it" they were.

I ordered the chicken curry, rice, roti, noodles and spicy beef and spring rolls(forgot the names of them) . ROTI WAS SO DELICIOUS SO SOFT YET CRUNCHY. I wanted to order more but we had more than enough on our plates. The portion size of everything is huge and worth the money you spend , will be great for large groups. The chicken curry , oh my goodness the soft succulent chicken with potatoes. The curry flavour was intense but the most delicious. The beef was so soft and moist so much flavour.

My highlight was the "Aunty" that works here she is so caring and as written before has a warm welcoming feeling like an Aunty. She will take care of you and help , I didn't notice my jacket fell on the floor and she picked it up and shook it and put it on my chair for me, she interacted with my son which is always a bonus when I go out to eat. It was our first time there and while we were ordering she said "Roti?" And when I said "yes please" she said "don't worry I already knew you would want Roti" I love that about some places that make you feel comfortable makes the experience so much better.

WILL BE BACK !

I only been here once but have always wanted to go back. Everything was good and the staff were friendly and helpful with suggesting the menu

This is by far the best Malaysian restaurant I've been to. Ignoring the slightly-cold attitude from the lady staff initially, the flavour of the food more than compensate for the lack of smiles from the staff.

We went there at 2pm on a saturday and ordered sambal fish fillet rice and nasi lemak. The sambal sauce was absolutely amazing although it could be a tad more spicy. The fish was tender and absorbed the sambal sauce really well. This dish goes great with rice.

The nasi lemak comes with fragrant pandan rice. The curry chicken was soft and succulent. The combination of flavours for this dish was spot-on as well.

I would definitely come back again to try other dishes! Glad that by the time we were done with our lunch, the staff started to show a hint of smile and friendliness too! Would highly recommend anyone who wanna try authentic Malaysian food. Forget the commercialised Paparich. Bunga Raya is the place to go!
Is really busy place in New Lynn open for lunch and dinner, can be hard to get in on weekends thou. Am currently about 30% through the menu and to date the Chicken Curry Roti is hard to go past. It's $16 but you will be satisfied.
Roger Dalton
Had a seafood curry laksa yesterday, was huge as they all are at the Malaysian restaurants, big beautiful bowl choc full of lovely soft noodles and an assortment of fish. This one had real lightly battered fish, some long pale eggplant as well as the usual supsects of prawns etc. Was great. But...
Angela
The food and service is great. The hainamese chicken is the best I've ever had, and everyone is so friendly and accommodating to kids. A bit pricey but definitely worth it.
Aaron Rodrigues
Have previously been a fan of Bunga Raya's menu and food, however I went there recently and ordered their Kungpo Chicken and was really disappointed with such a small quantity of meat in the actual takeaway dish. the rest was lots of filler such as onion and veges. Although they still make great tasting food I would be a bit hesitant to visit again.

I hadn't been here for a few years and recently came back for the Haianese chicken which I was craving.

It was very authentic with the side of spicy, slightly sweet, garlic chilli sauce and sesame/soy sauce. The chicken was soft and poached perfectly, rice was flavourful and fragrant as it should be. Definitely one of the authentic Haianese chicken dishes in Auckland.

I got mine takeaway for lunch for only $12, great value and it was a big portion! Will definitely be back more often.
ShoRt
The auntie here is super friendly and makes us feel at home. The place is spacious, bright and clean.

Menu wise, lots to choose from but our favourite is the sayur lodeh (mixed vegetable curry). We get it as our staple dish. We tried the coffee pork chop and although tastes nice it wasn't what I expected! Very tender though.

Prawn dishes here haven't seemed to impress us.

Assam fish is in our list to try next and so is the curry fish head (must pre order). Will definitely be back for a taste of KL.
Elsie
Truly Malaysian! Very satisfied with the taste of it. Pricey for dinner though, but the portion size is more than enough for two. Thumbs up!
Vanessa Vilila
Best Malaysian Restaurant EVER!!.. OMG the food there is just to die for... I always order the Mee Goreng KL Style / Curry Chicken and the Kapitan Chicken..Love the food.... Love the staff...Love the friendly service and greeting every time i walk through the doors.....
Michael Lorrigan
Love coming here for lunch or dinner. The hosts are always super friendly. The hainanese chicken is always tender and the nasi lemak is to die for. Good stuff!

Malaysian Cuisine. Just awesome.

With not much experience in Malaysian Cuisine, it was only evident that I need to expand my culinary palette by visiting Bunga Raya Restaurant in New Lynn. I enlisted the help of a fellow chef buddy of mine and on a Monday off what better than to try out some wicked Malaysian Cuisine.

Like most Asian Restaurants, for the uneducated in these affairs, it can be quite intimidating walking into these mysterious food halls not knowing what most of the dishes are and sometimes not even being able to read the menu. To that I say, you have a Smart Phone. Google it. If you are unsure of what dishes are, it takes 20 seconds to find out. If you still don't think you. An muster the courage to enter these fine food establishments, you are honestly missing out!

The bubbly Maitre d is super friendly. He food comes out super fast. If you like your food spicy, be sure to ask for it that way. Also the same if you like it mild. Drinks are not on a menu, but all you need to do is ask.

Honestly I can't remember what we had to eat as I can't remember the names of the dishes, but believe me they are tasty! So tasty. I even placed a take away order to eat later the day. The flavour combinations and flavour profiles are on point. 👌🏽 Dishes are quite substantial and are priced very sharply.

Bunga Raya have many mentions in Viva, NZ Herald, Cuisine Magazine, etc as the proudly display these articles on their walls. Bunga Raya are proud of their establishment, proud of their food and proud of their cuisine. If Malaysian Cuisine is as tasty as Bunga Raya make it, I can't wait to have more! Thank you for a culinary eye opening experience 👏🏼
Christian
I don't normally give a full 5 points as I think there is always some room for any restaurant to improve. However, I had to do this for Bunga Raya considering I have been there more than two dozen times and we live about 1hour away from it. This place meets every requirement of being my most loved restaurant. The food is great, setting is very homely and the most importantly the people there are most amazing. The restaurant is run by a family passed down from parents to children (you still can see the elderly gentleman proudly introduce himself and the restaurant he established to customers). I was mostly amazed by the warmness of this place- they remember out names after visiting this place once and they sometime offer dishes that are not on the menu. I loved the mango chicken the owner specifically made for us! I have brought many people there and so far, everyone has loved the place!
Angela
Have been coming here for years and years, it's one of my family's favourite restaurants (if not their favourite.) The food is delicious every time, service is amazingly friendly, never had a bad experience here. Definitely a must try if you're in the area.
Stifanyanwar
We went there on Chinese New Year for a very first time and was amazed by really great service from the staff. We had Yusheng (traditional prosperity salad) as an entree and the lady who seems to be the owner explained it to us about the story behind that food. We also had asam prawn curry, deep fried cereal prawn, hainamese chicken, special squid and green veggies called kangkong! The taste of the food was amazing and reasonable price. This restaurant is one of the best Malaysian Chinese restaurant that I've ever been so far.. I'll definitely come back in the future:)

Off menu vegan options available! Its a lovely stir fry dish of vegetables (you can customize the vegetables too), don't forget to order a bowl of rice to go with it. It tastes very fresh and is very filling.

This restaurant is purely for eating though, don't expect to have a decent conversation with the background kitchen noise. The furniture is also quite dated along with the tableware (not instagram material fo sho)
Michelle Hwang
Met the most yummy and typical Hainanese Chicken Rice dish with lovely price here. Mix the sauce and some rice together and then just enjoy it. Every bite of it was delicious.
Tracy Bennett
Think American Food Court found at any mall in the USA sold at well above average fine dining pricing and you have this place nailed. All I can figure is that folks that find it even 'okay' just don't get out much or are comparing this place to KFC or McDonalds? Hard call for that one. lol Even at half the price of our bill tonight we would have been getting ripped off! Frankly, this is the worst food I've had since being in Aux (over a year and dining out several times per week). So, be forewarned as this place is crap. It's changed my entire outlook on the Metro, they scored it well... shaking head. A family friend writing the article? Lol!
Dinesh Naik
2nd visit was as good as first !! Stand out dish was the roti canai ( ordered as a starter)

Their XO chicken is also outstanding !

Good ambience and nice attention to detail!
Wawa Kibret Negash
Our Malaysian friends introduced us to this place a few years back and we go when we're craving Malaysian cause it is the best and never disappoints with a vast choice of dishes and the best customer service money can buy. My friends have chicken and seafood dishes and I have the vegetarian noodles. Eggplant XO is a fav, but everything is extraordinary. The waitress is my favorite ever. Thank you always, till we come again

My family and I have been frequenting this restaurant for about a year and we have always had a good experience. We like the food and have recommended this restaurant to others.

Today was a different experience, one that has left me extremely disappointed and disgusted. The service was simply appalling. My daughter was playing with tissues and the waiting staff came over and grabbed the tissues from her. When I asked for water, the response was an irritated acknowledgment to say the least.

After packing our leftovers in takeaway boxes, the waiting staff came to clear the table and pushed away one takeaway box to a corner of the table while we were packing it into a bag. No apology was given when we highlighted this error.

If you want decent food with appalling service and feel as if you're not welcomed in the restaurant, go ahead and try this place.
G
A must go place if you're a fan of Malaysian food. We went for the Hainanese chicken rice, seafood curry laksa noodles and the chau kuai teow - the 3 most popular choices according to the owner.

All of it were amazing. The chau kuai teow was perhaps a bit on the salty side but I guess eating out means you have to forget about being healthy. Probably the best Malaysian that I've had in Auckland, totally up to par with what I've had in SE Asia :)

The only thing stopping me from giving it a 5 is that it's super out of the way. I hardly ever venture out this side of town but maybe I will more often in the future, if only to come back here!
Ryan Wong
First time dining at Bunga Raya with my friend, as fellow Malaysian, dining here bring back lots of memories. The authenticity cooking style of Malaysia food really live up the name. Unfortunately my friend not a spicy food fan but we really enjoying the food. Deco just simple Asia restaurant but food get all the points!
Emm Gee
This restaurant has amazing food and amazing service at any night of the week. The seafood sung Choy pao is incredible! Our go to place whenever we feel like eating out
Tanz
We had hainanese chicken rice and beef rendang on rice from lunch menu and the hainanese chicken was amazing! Rice cooked perfectly with the taste that hainese chicken rice should be. Chicken was tender served in tasty soy sauce (not too salty) and the chilli sauce was a good combination for the dish. This is the best hainanese chicken rice I've had in Auckland so far :)

Beef rendang was alright, beef wasnt that tender but was not too bad but I didn't really get spices from the dish like I have had from other restaurants.

Service was good from the owners who are really proud of their food :) The place looks really clean. Food were served really quick. I will go back there again if I'm in the area. Definitely another good place for authentic Malaysian food in Auckland.
Henry Patel
Food was ok, was bit disappointed as not much variety for vegetarian. Even their tofu had egg in it. Had vege curry which was nice however. Service was excellent, boss was really nice
Stephen Pattemore
We were looking up your website with a view of booking a table for 4 for Monday. However the first page we looked at of the menu featured 2 dishes of shark fin soup. We are really sorry to see this as we believe that hunting sharks for their fins should be illegal and that shark fin soup should be banned. It is a very cruel practice, leaving sharks to die a lingering painful death and many species of shark are threatened by our human greed.
Auckland Foodie
This place is one of those gems that you almost don't want people to know about. Tucked a few shop fronts from McDonalds across from Lynmall, this Malaysian restaurant was bursting to the brim on Saturday lunchtime. Reservations are definitely a must do. Opt to get their booklet menu since the back of the first page abounds with pictures sure to whet your appetite. Our family was easily accommodated in a packed restaurant. We opted for quite a generous number of dishes. We had the honey pork, the homemade tofu in special sauce, oatmeal prawns (pictured here), xo vegetables, beef rendang, roti canal, and coffee pork. We also had steamed rice. The wait for our meals wasn't long and we were efficiently provided with hot tea. As dish after dish came nothing came to disappoint. The rendang was outstanding. The honey pork demolished in a flash. The tofu was like warm set custard in the middle encased with a crispy skin. It was sprinkled with crispy shallots and spring onion and came with a soy vinegar sauce. It was delish! We fought over the last of the roti. We lamented at the lack of room for xo vegetables comprised of a trio of okra, green beans, and Asian eggplant. The only let down was the coffee pork which came last, but probably harshly judged since it came last. So yummy! This will become a regular haunt.

Went here as a big group and the service was just okay. I would say this is one of the best malaysian restaurants in Auckland. The deep fried tofu was cooked to perfection and the nestum prawn was to die for!!! 😋😋😋 overall, this restaurant is quite pricey, however it is worth to try! 👍

The closest thing I can find to authentic Malaysian food! The hainanese chicken rice was sooo good and the eggplant, the fish and pork dishes are good too. Nom nom feel hungry just thinking about it
Foa Pili
One of my favourite places to eat, have eaten here numerous times and have enjoyed everything I've had so far, friendly helpful staff and for a tiny kitchen they bring out the food super fast. It always feels like I'm visiting a friends place probably because the years I've been coming here the decor or food have not changed at all. Favourite dish has to be anything with xo sauce have had it with chicken, prawns and squid and it's always hard to choose which one I feel like love the chilly hit and sweet salty sauce, the roti and curry chicken is a must and the pork dishes are all cooked to tender perfection. Have enjoyed their lunch meals too but still love the sharing of mains at dinner amongst friends.

If you love Malaysian food, please go to Bunga Raya immediately.

The main waitress is the owner’s wife – and she has this Malaysian auntie way about her. She’s friendly, speaks quite fast with Malaysian accent, and a little bit bossy (like your auntie would be). She knows her food – so if you have food allergy just tell her and she’ll tell you what you can’t have on the menu (you know Malaysian cuisine has dried shrimps hidden in all sorts of places). She’s cool, I like her.

Try their Beef curry with vegetables (one of the dishes recommended by owner auntie). The sliced beef pieces are so tender, the vegetables perfectly cooked (still firm), and the curry sauce is creamy velvety coconutty.

Their Sambal eggplant is also delicious - Large pieces of chinese eggplants, deep fried so they retain their shape and don’t get mushy. Smothered in garlicky sambal sauce. Amazing. My favourite dish.

Scrumptious Beef rendang - Tender pieces of beef in thick rendang curry sauce. Yum!

For lunch, they serve one-dish style food, like Hainan chicken rice, Nasi Lemak, Sambal chicken on rice, Laksa, and all kinds of noodles – all very tasty!

Lunch price is very good – most dishes are under $15

Dinner is a little more pricey – meat dishes are on the $30 mark, but the portion is very generous. You get a lot of meat & veg for what you pay for.

Came here being 8 weeks pregnant with my husband for the first time as recommended by work mates. Place was busy. We had a noodle dish and xo chicken, servings were huge and enough to feed another 2 ppl. Service was friendly and helpful. Before visiting i hated Malaysian food but now im inlove. This is my new fav restaurant. Xo u guys are amazing
Candii Cao
We ordered sambal fried rice and nasi lemak (curry chicken) for $26. The dishes was good size and flavour was good. Service was average but still they were accommodating as we had three toddlers. Everyone at the table was happy with their meals.
Stango
I'd like to come back here to try out their mains options on steamed rice. I came here for the Char Kway Teow fried noodles and although the serving was huge, I wasn't blown away by the taste. The Chew Yim chicken sounds like it would be good. I found the staff to be pleasant and helpful in advising how many dishes to order. I've heard this is Ray McVinnie's cheap eats recommendation, so I will definitely be giving their dishes another go.

Bunga Raya, a the famous Malaysian restaurant in New Lynn that has been around for years. Had a bit of fal from grace when they got a E for their hygiene which was quickly rectified and now an A!

They have been around for a long time and is one of the earliest Malaysian Chinese style resturant. This place is always packed, for lunch and dinner, and has remained popular dispite the flooding issues in New Lynn.

Their Hainesee Chicken Rice, Laksa, Nasi Lemak and curry chicken is a must try. And if you are into spicy, don’t forget to ask for their sambal, it is just delicious.

This is a family business and the managers recognise and remember every regular. You will be served with green tea on arrival but make sure you order a drink or two from them too. It’s divine!
Kelly
Food 3.5
Value 3
Atmosphere 3
Service 3

Ordered their signature dish fish head noodle soup again (ah ha). It was good. Haven't get a chance to try other dishes. the portion is huge as usual, can feed 2~3 people.
David
The xo chicken was real tasty, also the wonton soup is extremely good. 140 word minimum for the review is too long...my head hurts thinking about it. Good restaurant I'll continue to keep eating here. 👍

Really, really good Malaysian food! This isn't a place to linger, but one where you can get authentic food fast. Be sure to ask if you don't know what to have - they'll fix you up with something you'll love.

So good!
Jack
First things first.. The service was amazing, unlike any other place I have been, so honest, casual, blunt (in a good way) and welcoming. The food was tasty and came out within 10 minutes of ordering. This was a great night and I can't wait to return
Lyn Templeman
Lunch with the girls today. Wow what fabulous food. We shared a very generous plate of XO squid, it's absolutely a must have. We also had a lemon grass chicken curry, sizzling prawn dish and a Me Noreng everyone a taste sensation. I wish I lived closer as I can't wait to go back.
Fara T
5 for service and 3.8 for food..very friendly family business. It might not be the best Malaysian food I have ever had but it is up there! Really enjoyed it. Will definitely be back .

I am craving pungent Malaysian flavours, which were making me so desperate to come and try their assam fish. I can only hold on medium spicy. While the sauce was melt in the mouth, I felt like gooseflesh all over my skin. Only disappointed was service are pretty average, which took more than half an hour wait for my lunch. It wasn’t very a good experience. But will come back for another try.

Great evening. We came here recently for the first time for my sons birthday. We felt very welcome and really enjoyed the lively hostess. She welcomed our birthday cake with open arms and served us a truly delicious feast. I spent a year in the Malaysian area and the tastes are so authentic it took me back to the wonderful cuisine I'd loved while I was there. Will definitely be going back for more.

Came here for dinner last Friday night with a friend. It was our first visit and by the end of dinner we were vowing that we'd come back. If you're a local and you haven't visited Bunga Raya you need to dine here! My friend and I were a little lost on what to order - I'm a big fan of Char Kway Teow, so that was an easy decision to make. The second dish we decided to go for the Kungpo chicken. The owner who is incredibly friendly with a charming sense of humour enquired why I had chosen that meal and suggested that I go for the Kapitan Chicken which is curry chicken cooked in lemongrass. The meal was a-maz-ing! And we were really pleased that she suggested this. I've given half a point off because I was expecting the Char Kway Teow to be a bit spicer, but I'll request this next time I dine here. The dishes here are not only tasty but also generously sized.

Great quick mid week dinner! Delish and not hard on the wallet. Recommend the XO squid! Also BYO wine and the service was great and comical

Loved it! Good was super fast, cheap and delicious. A very busy joint, so not the place for a quiet dine out. Prepared to be loud and hearty!

I was born in Malaysia and moved to NZ three years ago. Addressing authentic Malaysian food is definitely not an issue for me.

I would definitely say Bunga Raya is an authentic Malaysian restaurant.
The food!!! To. Die. For. I can honestly say i've tried every single thing on the menu, whether it's dining in or takeaway - i've definitely tried it ALL.

My top 3 favourite dishes would be:
1. Hainanese Chicken Rice. ($11.90)
Nice and quick. I remember eating this 4 days in a row. It's insane how simple this dish is. It consist of boiled chicken with a mix of light soy, garlic and sesame oil base, cucumber, tomatoes, garnished with chopped scallions and cilantro sprigs. It's served with a bowl chicken rice and a chilli gingery dipping sauce. Put everything in one spoon, and it tastes PHENOMENAL. Everything just goes so well!
To be honest, this dish isn't for everybody.. My partner thought it looked unappealing... And he told me he wouldn't try it cause it was "mental" thing, but once it was in his mouth, he fell in love with it! It's one of those dishes that tastes better than it looks!

2. Kampong Tofu. ($20 - Dinner dish)
Not a big fan of tofu, but i have this habit of trying new things to expand my knowledge on food and sorta explore my likes and dislikes. Turns out, tofu isn't too bad! Especially THIS ONE - the tofu was made from scratch combined with eggs and this special sauce.

Lovely food and friendly staff.
A lady (aunty?) was very helpful when we struggled to choose dishes from extensive lunch menu.
Every dish we have ordered were tasty, good portion and reasonably priced.
We will definitely go there again to try other dishes.
Peifen Chua
Ordered the fish curry, salted and spicy chicken, tofu and kangkung. A good feast indeed, worth the drive all the way to new lynn. Will come back again.

I can honestly say Bunga Raya is the best Malaysian food i've ever tasted in the whole of Auckland.
The service, the authenticity, the place as a whole gives out good vibes.
Every time i pop by, I would always order the Hainanese Chicken rice, was a little gutted to hear it was sold out on the day, but the "auntie" recommended Chicken Laksa and man, it was so good. I think i found a new personal favourite.

Highly recommended! If you live out New Lynn ways and you're a foodie, YOU MUST COME BY!
Moira McFarland
As always, it was very tasty. My partner whose first time dining there thought that it was a tad too expensive. I would have to agree with him on the pricing, but the food was very good as always.
Charlie M.
Bunga Raya never fails to deliver good Malaysian dishes and I recommend their char kway teow KL style and Hainanese chicken rice dishes. Highly recommend this place to those who want a taste of Malaysia

Pretty average food for the price they charge dont think will be back here again :-( :-(:-(:-(:-(:-(:-(:-(:-(:'(:-(:-(:-(:-(:-(:-( :-(:-(:-(

We came by for lunch on a Sunday and my my my it was packed as! We ordered dishes from the menu - we enjoyed the spicy long beans, black pepper pork ribs, fried tofu and the kapitan chicken curry really stood out. The assam fish could do with more tamarind, though. The service was super friendly - the 'auntie' was very jovial and recommended us most of the ordered dishes, she even came by to help cut the chicken for the kids so that their parents could enjoy their meals, which I thought was very nice (and matronly - in a Chinese Malaysian momma sorta way).

Highly recommended. Bear in mind they only take bookings for more than 8 people... and arrive on time or your table will be given away.
Fleur Peps
Simply the best Malaysian food I have had outside of Malaysia itself.

The staff here are LOVELY and always greet us with smiles. We are regulers here and they alway remember us and our fave dishes.

The food is fantastic, always fast and prepared well.

XO squid is the best and the Roti Channai. If you haven't been here yet, you need to come!

Don't let the fact that it's in NEw Lynn scare you.
David Boshier
This place is one of the best Malaysian restaurants in Auckland. The curry sauce with the roti chanai takes you back to Malaysia along with the quirky service.

You need to book as this place is extremely busy most nights.

It is also hard to go past any of their dishes with XO sauce.

You need to hunt this place out.
Golfergran
I am a regular to Bunga Raya. It's the most authentic Malaysian food I have enjoyed outside of Malaysia. The staff are awesome, when there is a rush on, don't be alarmed that they are run off their feet and may not seem to take much notice... they do hear you and will do the best they can to attend. If by chance you do wait a little longer than what you expect, the food is well worth the wait... The "D" rating that was issued to them in July was a temporary certificate as their A rating had expired, there is a down time in re-issuing certifications, I understand from the council. If you are a regular diner to cafes/restaurants around the New Lynn area, you would have noticed most of the cafes/restaurants had received the D rating. However, at the beginning of August they were re-issued with their shiny new "A" rating. Bunga Raya is well worth the visit, on my visits i have seen a few well known foodie celebs pop in, so do give this place a try, all the food is so yummy...

Been to this place for the last 5 years. Love their food especially XO chicken and sambal eggplant. I am a Malaysian, I know what's authentic and what's not. Curry laksa really yummy too and fried kuey teow. Love the hainanese chicken rice and also the most important is the chilli sauce! Same as chicken rice I have in Malaysia. Friendly staff and also efficient. Food serve on time. No disappointment at all.
Kelvin Blom
I went To Bunga Raya Last night for dinner with a group of 10 people. The first thing I noticed was the big D rating on the door (made me nervous). The dish I ordered came out an hour after everyone else at my table got theirs. The reason I got was that they burnt my first one. No apology given. The mixed seafood entrée was just pre-frozen supermarket food deep fried. Not fresh seafood. This made the $12 price not worth it.
I won't be returning.
Blair
Went there with the boys for a Friday chow down
Service was great, staff hilarious & knowledgeable - they said we were ordering too much & to stop ordering
Food was excellent, and advice was spot on - we had plenty.
As for "D" rating, (Owner asked us what we did - then asked us to give quote on some work, so actually went into kitchen) The kitchen was immaculate.
Top Notch - will definitely go again
XO Squid fabulous
Anita Muthukaruppan
I went to Bunga Raya today to get a laksa for lunch. I saw that they now have a D food hygiene grade displayed on their door. I stopped and left. How dirty do their practices have to be to deserve a D rating? I didn't want to find out.
Belinda
Great friendly family atmosphere. Delicious food. It's always busy and vibrant. We celebrated my fathers birthday there recently and coincidentally there were 5 other tables also celebrating birthdays. The owner led the whole restaurant in singing happy birthday. Another great night at bunga! It's easy to see why this place is always so popular. Highly recommend the Assam fish curry and XO anything.
Brian Hickman
Took some friends with us recently. They were very impressed with the food and the service. We visit this restaurant about twice a year and have never been disappointed.
Keith
Went here for lunch. Was disappointed that the laksa was sold out but we had rendang, sambal fish and char kuay teow instead. The dishes were tasty as Malaysian food always is but I think it was a little too mild for my tastebuds. Not very authentic and quantities are average. Service was average too

We went there for dinner on Saturday and ordered half hainanese chicken and a sizzling beef. On the menu, they were priced at $18 for half chicken and $24 for the beef. When I settled the payment, the owner asked for $19 for the half chicken and $26 for the sizzling beef. I asked the reason and he said he couldnt put stickers over the prices on the menu, as customers peel the stickers off. I thought this is false advertising and this is not a valid reason to overcharge customers.

They also charged $1 per person for tea and $1.50 for a bowl of rice.

Really lovely, knowledgeable service, great food and generous portions!

I had the delicious Chicken Curry, one of two gluten-free options on the lunch menu (the other is Beef Rendang). At night, the Tamarind Fish and Tamarind Prawns are also prepared without gluten.

Best Laksa ever, including KL. Delicious! Basic chicken, seafood an seafood special, between $NZ 11.90 and $NZ 16.00.

Generous portions of chicken pieces, sprouts, beans, egg plant (aubegene), half egg, noodles and very flavorful stock of coconut milk, chillies and broth served in a large bowl.

This stuff is excellent on a cold day. Also recommend their Chicken Noodle Soup, XO Dishes, matter of fact the whole menu is a West Auckland slice of Malaysia.

Went here last weekend and it was nice. They need more drink options but the food was good. Good service too. The chicken curry was super yummy!! If you want authentic Malayan food, come here it's good!!

Nice food, but pretty pricey compared to other Malaysian restaurants, especially as the atmosphere is quite basic. The Homemade Egg Tofu ($20) was silky smooth. The inviting Fish Head Curry cost $66, though I have to say it was a large platter, and consists of the front half of a fish, rather than just the head, and also comes with a bit of vegetables (okra, brocolli, beans, etc.) Apart from booking a table, you need to order in advance for specialty items, including:
- Hainanese chicken (half $18, whole $36)
- herbal duck, steamed with special Chinese herbs ($68)
- treasure duck, steamed with sticky rice and mushroom ($68)
- curry fish head (seasonal price)
- taro basket ($32)
- fried crabs with XO or chilli sauce (seasonal price)
- gado gado ($28)
- dessert: bubur cha cha or sago pudding ($6 per bowl)
Service was efficient, but I didn't like the way bowls of rice automatically appeared on plates in front of us, especially as they cost $3 each (we ended up sending one back). The restaurant also seemed to have run out of a number of vegetables, despite us being there at 7pm---or perhaps they were just not in season. Basically they seemed to only have beans. Despite being on the menu, kangkong (hollow stem vegetable) and eggplant were both unavailable.

We tried the XO chicken and the seasoning was delicious.
The Lam Mee we found, was not authentic enough (the noodles were of a different type).
The Chao Kuay Teow was too salty and the mung beans were overcooked.
Our friend recommended us the Hainanese chicken rice, the rice was nice and fragrant. but the chicken was not plucked properly! When the waitresses came to take it away we received no apology :/
Apparently, we were told the Laksa was good, but they ran out at about 12.30pm. We'll probably only come here once a year...

Excellent service and fantastic food. The best squid dish I've ever tasted - so tender and the rich flavour of deep fried chili and XO sauce - superb. It's not "fine dining" but its real fine food.

All dishes exceeded expectations. Highlight of this place are the proprietors. Service with a smile indeed. They lit up the room and elevated the evening with their helpful suggestions and advice. When we complimented him on the XO Squid he laid down the challenge - 'you ain't seen anything yet!! Next time you come we will surprise you with a family secret squid dish' - I can't let a challenge like that go without reply - see you next week.

I don't live in Auckland anymore but every time I come I have to come here at least once (once I've even come twice in one day!!). Rita is great and friendly and always laughs when I order the roti and chicken curry (it's just so good!!). Sometimes I do venture out and order something new and I don't think I've found anything on the lunch menu that I don't like, its seriously good food. Don't go often for dinner but that in itself is a treat too. Servings are huge and they do some great dishes that aren't on the lunch menu so make sure you give it a go. This place is a real gem in New Lynn - just don't expect fancy decor or fine dining experience. It's all about good food and lovely hosts. Enjoy!

Couldn't fault it. Fantastic food and service - the XO chicken was amazing.

This place was introduced to my family only a couple of weeks ago and we have been there three times already. It is delicious and well-priced. It isn't a big restaurant so you might need to book to ensure you get a table. I recommend this to everyone who loves the taste of authentic food. The staff there are lovely, too.

very very good experience and food! tofu is my fav

A must try in Auckland. Fantastic service - John and Rita are lovely people. We eat at Bunga Raya for all kinds of occasions (mostly because we miss the food!) and they do their best to accommodate to our needs. They also remember your special requests. Such service and good food is rare around Auckland and Bunga Raya is definitely a gem. Try their Assam Fish, home-made tofu with special sauce and Rendang(s) for the best taste of Malaysia. Hokkien Mee and Mee Goreng are also very good.

What a wonderful find Bunga Raya is! Authentic food at reasonable prices. We love it, and the owners and staff are so welcoming. This is a perfect example of how a neighbourhood restaurant should be run, and we have become regular visitors. I'd recommend anything on the menu, but for a real taste treat go for a seafood dish (prawns, squid) with XO sauce. Fantastic!

Don't know why Anton has such a nationalist bee in his bonnet about crabs. Anyway, this is one of my favourite dining experiences in Auckland. Outstanding food (and I've had some excellent Malay meals in Pinang and KL) and warm, personal service (remembered us even though we've been there five times max in the last few years). Assam fish and XO squid are deservedly rated, kangkung (a personal fave and a good test of a restaurant IMO) is also great. Don't expect a quiet meal, always packed and these days plenty of palagi are onto it for birthdays etc. BYO is a treat. If I lived nearby I'd eat here every week.

It was Saturday evening and me and my friend was kind of lazy preparing for dinner and we decided to takeaway from Bunga Raya Malaysian Restaurant. We came in and order few selections included AUSSIE MUD CRAB XO Sauce @1kg Each. When we came back after 30 minutes or so the food was ready for us to pick up and the gentleman with glases( I think he is the owner) gave us our food and was telling us they ran out of Ausssie Mud Crab and instead he was giving us 2 NEW ZEALAND MUD CRAB and he claimed the 2 NZ mud Crab were suppose cost more etc.
Firstly, I do not think he is very honest at all as I never know mud crab existed in New Zealand.
Secondly, I do not think 2 little NZ crabs would cost more than a 1kg Aussie muds. As they weight far less than 1kg.
In conclusion, food are all right in this restaurant..but what made us very disappointed was the owner of the restaurant was not honest at all and tried to fool us hence the poor rating.

Best malaysian in auckland I think. Not that I eat lots of malaysian, so actually, best ethnic. Super yummy food - xo chicken, masam fish & xo egg plant are recommended. Super nice couple who run it. The venue is kooky but that's part of its charm - BYO too which is rare. I know New Lynn is a perceptual barrier but worth the drive. Takeaways too for all dishes. Eat it much too much.

Exceptional food and service, so personable and staff will advise and give suggestions. Almost reluctant to volunteer a review as it's already so popular it can be tricky to get a table! XO squid is indeed amazing. We dine in or get takeaways most weeks and I've never heard anyone say anything negative - it must be becoming legendary. Oh, a tip. The serving sizes are large, so it's best to go in a group of 4 or more and share the meals. You don't need a dish per person. Enjoy!
Anita
Lovely people, fantastic food. Tom yum soup really good. Try the butter coconut prawns they are wonderful. Can't wait to try some more of the menu.

My husband and I dined in as this restaurant was recommended to us as we love to go to Canton Cafe in Kingsland,(BEST THAI IN AUCKLAND!)
the atmosphere was buzzy and the XO Squid is something i still crave to this moment, Yummy food, but take a crew and its better value for money as the servings are quite large,so you can share and have more to select from the menu, oh and BYO !

I was in New Zealand for 4 months and i worked at ANZ Lyn Mall which is across the restaurant and this is one of the things i missed!!!!!! Great food and reasonably priced! Hainanese chicken is really good stuff and if u are into the good Malaysian cooking, try the Asam fish, don't know if i spelled it correctly it's really great! Owners of the restaurant are cool guys too! Very warm with their customers :)
Izzy
the food was outstanding and the service amazing - the owner helped us choose a good selection of deliciously cooked + flavoured authentic malaysian dishes - a family owned restaurant - they are passionate about their food and their business - highly recommended
Dale
Friendly service, fantastic food, great atmosphere. The kerabu tofu melts in your mouth and the flavours in the assam fish sauce are fabulous. The staff are very friendly and helpful, they take pride in their work and take the time to get to know you. Old fashioned service that's all too rare these days.
Enak sekali - very delicious!

Excellent authentic food and consistent EVERY TIME! Very good owner managed place and highly recommended!

The Hainanese Chicken rice is really good.

Unless you're a Westie, Bunga Raya is a bit out of the way. But what it lacks in location it more than makes up for in taste. Bunga Raya (which means hibiscus in Malay) serves up delicious Malaysian food and is a popular spot amongst both expatriate Malaysians and wine-toting BYOers. It pays to book ahead as the restaurant is always full. The sheer number of dishes on offer will make your head spin. But one can't go wrong with the classic Nonya chicken curry, a wonderful marriage of Chinese and Malay cookery. Special mention must also go to the XO squid, a fragrant stir fry tender squid in Bunga Raya's 'extraordinary' sauce.
Kiwi Food Wonders
What a great name for a Malaysian restaurant. It doesn’t so much roll off the tongue as bounce around your mouth full of happiness & flavour. Just like good Malaysian food should.

We’d heard good things about this place from locals, so decided to try it out on a wet Monday night. With visions of hot, spicy laksa and garlicky roti dancing in our heads, we navigated our way to this unassuming little spot. Be warned, although the address is on Great North Road, the restaurant is actually tucked around the corner on Memorial Drive. It’s another one of these averagely decorated places that almost signal the food is gonna be great these days. But thankfully the linoleum has been replaced with carpet in this joint, and the decor looks slightly more like someone has given it a passing thought.

And the rude waiters have been replaced with funny, informative, friendly staff who genuinely seem to a) know & b) care about what is happening in their kitchen. And they can even make wonderful suggestions! Our table of 4 loaded up with a chicken curry & satay chicken – since the locals had already come prepared to order their fave dishes – so us newbies went with the waitress’ suggestion of XO Squid and Coffee Pork Chops. Sadly the laksa is only on offer at lunchtime. But our disappointment didn’t last long.

Oh my yum! Satay Chicken; well, let’s just say there was a fight on our hands, as the visiting mini reviewer thought he had it all to himself. It was authentic, sweet but spicy, peanutty but not drenched in nuts. Possibly the best satay I’ve had.

To read the full review, click here: http://kiwifoodwonders.com/2013/04/24/bunga-raya-new-lynn/
