Review Postal Service Cafe - Auckland Central

The Gourmet Vegan Breakfast is one of the best I’ve had. Everything was prepared and cooked to perfection. Will definitely be back again, compliments to the chefs. Front of house staff were excellent too, a good job all round!

We came here before an event that was happening nearby, so we didn’t know much about the cafe before walking through the door. We were completely blown away by how tasty the vegan meals can be 🤤 That sausage tasted just like a meat one! The service was quick and efficient and we really liked the vibe and the decor. Definitely recommend for a brunch spot!

BEAUTIFUL presentations. Great vegan options! Would highly recommend trying this cafe for the warm salad and chia pancakes

Lovely little cafe for brunch. Nice ambience, very well presented food with loads of options for all sorts of dietary needs. Great coffee, everything was so fresh and came out fast. Friendly staff. Highly recommend

The coffee was great, I love the vegan breakfast it was delicious

Excellent food n beautiful presentation, enjoyed every single bite of the meal. This cozy restaurant is one of the best vegan place in town and has left the best impressions. We went for the breakfast n started off with espresso white and then ordered two mains mushroom halloumi & vegan omelette. The Cafe owner was very friendly and knowledgeable n gave us complimentry beetroot pie which was very well textured. It's now my goto place for BF/Brunch. Highly recommend!

Note: it is vegetarian here. Came here on a weekday - lots of space and tables to work and eat. Latte tasted great - strong, flavourful and not bitter. Fritters bowl was delicious, everything came well together except the bean sprouts. These did not add anything and did not go well with the rest of the dish. Think they should’ve been replaced with a different vegetable/nuts sprinkled over for that crunch factor. Mushroom halloumi was also delicious. Food was fresh tasting. Left feeling very full. Great portions.
Isabella
yum food and awesome that they can make most of it vegan!! friendly service staff too ☺️
Dr Mike
Great vegan breakfast, coffee was excellent, and service really good. Prices, slightly on the high side, but can't fault the food!
Maddy
been here 3 times now and every time i am so pleased with the experience, cafe is mostly vegan and offers a huge range of gluten free options. Staff are so kind and accommodating, cabnet options are also amazing. Has become a new fave brunch spot

From interior design perspective, This old historic space has been transferred well into a Cafe. The steel frames play a big role to reshape & dividing entire space. The texture of steel adds the contrast into this retro style house as well. The benches and the desks area offer people options the atmosphere they need. The geometric shape big light add the modern shine into the benches area. The low bench along the windows along the street side, offers the moving pictures & city view from the streets.

Great coffee and vibes. Good for vegans with lots of vegan food options!

Super amazing vegan, GF breakfast! The portion is perfect. Food is beautifully plated and the place is just gorgeous! The interior design, plants and the stainless steel touch is so cute. The vegan omelette and matcha latte are just exquisite! Plus the cafe kiwi music vibes 😎 Would def come back again! Thanks for the perfect breakfast after 1.5 years abroad.

This has become my goto place for breakfast/lunch with the new menu! There are many options to choose from for Vegan/GF. The team is super accommodating, the food is healthy, the presentation is artistic, the service is stellar, and the atmosphere is chill. And, they have New Leaf Kombucha on tap:)

Yum yum yum. It’s all vegetarian/ vegan dishes ! Portions and price is very decent. The buckwheat pancakes weren’t overly sweet and the coconut whipped cream was delicious ! A good brunch spot :) The front till guy wasn’t the friendliest (maybe manager?) but all the other staffs were super friendly and nice.

Delighted to find this cafe on the corner. Has a clean setup that feels great and conducive for productivity, lovely staff members, and good coffee. Enjoyed the cute plants on the table and chill music. There's free wifi which is a must for if you want a workspace. Spotted some bag hooks and a few power points around too which is even better! Would easily come back to work/read. Haven't seen the menu but would be interested in that too perhaps in the future :)

Wonderful vegan cafe and very attentive service. Everyone is very friendly, the food is very delicious. A good cafe for vegans and vegetarians. A wide choice of breakfast savory and sweet. It's nice to see that there are always options for delicious vegan food. We often enjoy our breakfast here. Thanks very much.

Everything was great! Loved the nitro cold brew and our table was offered a sample too. Great service and obviously are passionate about coffee :)

Good spot for brunch. Went with some friends, good vege/vegan options. I had the huevos rancheros and were great. Space is a bit limited inside, but it is cosy.
First time here. The atmosphere was great and the staff members were very friendly. I had the smokey eggplant on toast and the taste was marvelous. It looked cheesy but the pungency of cheese taste was moderate which suited me. I will come back again for other dishes on their menu.

Absolutely loved brunch at Postal Service Cafe! Came in on a Saturday morning around 11.30am and it wasn’t too busy. We were seated promptly and the staff were very attentive. We ordered two coffees, the buckwheat pancakes and the agria hash with tofu. Coffees were as good as expected! The pancakes were surprisingly tasty (hadn’t tried buckwheat pancakes before) with delicious fresh fruits to balance the sweetness! The agria hash had a lovely homemade taste to it and was super filling. As we went up to pay we noticed the cookie jar and ended up getting one. We asked to have it warmed up and it was delicious! Super keen to check out the rest of the menu! The cafe had a great vibe to it and it has definitely become a new favourite.

I love this cafe. A special splash of colour in the midst of all the grey. Lovely people, amazing coffee (pretty strong), and tasty food. But I must say the food isn’t what draws me into this place. The first ever dish I got was a sweet dish (I forgot what it was. I think it’s waffles) which wasn’t bad but wasn’t a mind-blowing kind of tasty. But I know waffles are quite generic and hard to make outstanding. I do think that most cafes tend to have better cabinet food though. Anyways, I tried my first ever sauerkraut here, which was in one of their must try toasties. It’s basically fermented cabbage and I’d like to think of it as the Western version of kimchi haha. The coffee is always served at the perfect temperature and taste, but as I said, it’s quite strong as it did leave me with a massive headache once lol 😂 (but I am sensitive to caffeine to begin with). I was really excited that they also opened in Commercial Bay but I personally feel like it’s just not the same. The whole atmosphere and warmth of this cafe makes me want to stay inside forever.
-> BE BACK OR BACK AWAY? Definitely will be back. I really enjoyed the sauerkraut 😂. Their food is good, and the coffee is really good. There’s so many cafes that serve Kokako coffee so be sure to try it out if you haven’t. I wish this place is closer to my house. Would actually chill here so often. Ah, but see you soon hopefully. White and blue aesthetics. Soft, warm lighting. Love love love.

While the coffee is amazing, the menu is weird and does not have many appealing options. The portions are small and nothing extraordinary. Quite disappointed to be honest.
Loren Prince
Came here with the girls for a Saturday Brunch. Was so hard to choose because everything sounded amazing! I ended up going for the free range eggs. Portion size was so good and the pesto was super yum! A few of the girls got the mushrooms which were recommended (and delish). The coffee was also on point! For all of those worried about no meat options, it’s not even needed, you won’t feel like your missing out. 🙈
Chan Can Eat
I never told the friend i came with that this café served no meat (lol) but I very quickly changed their mind about meat-less meals. I’m not Vegan or vegetarian by any means but I do love that the flavour profiles are always so much more pronounced in a good ole’ vege meal.... here was no exception and the coffee was delicious too
The café doesn’t seat that many so can get packed. But I love the beautiful open and sunny nature of the interior
JunYong Lin
Nice place for gooooood cup of coffee, good service. vege friendly menu which I have not yet try it. I will come back to try something on the menu next time.
Anastacia
Best brew in town. Black, white or cold brew they’ve got all the options ready for you. Only reason they don’t get 5 stars is because they don’t offer a use your own cup discount - takeaway coffee cups are unnecessary pollution.
Lia
Pleasant atmosphere with friendly staff :)
Just a heads up, it can get a bit hot during sunny days. Keen to try something from the cabinet next time!
Benedict Uy
the cafe is located on the corner of Williamson and Great North Road. Keep an eye out for the blue wattle of the kokako or the blue facade of the building.

it was fairly busy but we were able to get one of the benches in the back. It wasn't until we were at the cafe perusing through the menu that we noticed that the menu was meat-free. The menu items all looked very interesting though.i tried the black garlic mushrooms. Mushrooms were nicely cooked and loaded on top of a couple of slices of toast. It was bigger than it looked.

We also tried the nitro pulled coffee. It was interesting. It was way too bitter for me as I don't really drink coffee. It was really smooth, almost like a beer.

It is quite an interesting cafe with lots of food and drink options. they also have a small shop that sells coffee related items like keep mugs.
Pick&Mix
Went here due to tiger burger being closed over Xmas. So glad we did had been here years ago and weren’t that impressed. Food looked and tasted beautiful. Can only fault them in the price of their smoothies. Lots of money for very nice but very small drinks.

The food here was good, not too much more to say about it. However, the service needs some serious work. When I walked in it was confusing as to where I was meant to go and I had about 3 different waitstaff walk past me before I decided to grab a menu myself and wait to be seated. The decor was beautiful, coffee good, but thats where it ends really. It took another 15 mins for someone to take my order, 10 to get a coffee and another 50 MINUTES for my food too arrive. Really unimpressed. I understand that places get busy and it can be difficult to do everything at once but man, grass could grow quicker. I tried to be nice to the waitstaff anyway, as a decent person does, but when I mentioned that I had already been waiting 30 mins for my food the waitress just stared at me and said 'sorry' and walked away? Hun if you're not having a good day I understand but please just give me my food before I get hangry. Much love xo
Nina
I bought a long black from the Parnell Market, the employees that are running that stall need more training. I would have gone back but they suddenly became very busy. It was the worst long black I’ve had in NZ so far.

It was so watery, it tasted like coffee flavoured water. I’m sure that the Parnell Market stall doesn’t reflect all Kokako.

Brought here by my friend in the name of trying “vegan brunch” which was not such an exciting idea to a meat lover like me. However, the food turned out to be very nice on top of its friendly service, so I think I’ll come back again :)
Vegan Wanderer
The food was actually quite nice and tasty. Coffee was good too but shame about the attitude of the wait staff. 2 of us with a hungry toddler, we waited patiently for over 50mins for our food to arrive. Our little one only got toast too and was increasingly getting hungry! When the waitress finally got our food, I just politely asked her if the toast for my toddler is on way too. She just snapped at me - “as you can see I only have 2 hands”. Wow! If your having a bad day, no need to take it out on your customers.
Angie Lee
The food is more like vegetarian here. The mushroom and the eggplant is way too sweet. And the mushroom doesn’t really taste like normal mushroom. But the service is good.
Mmmfood
This is a nice cafe that serves good coffee and tasty food. While the menu may not boast the largest selection, it is certainly on the more original side. The Agria Potato Hash was very enjoyable. The atmosphere and service are also very good.

It’s been 5 years since our last review of Kokako - can you believe it? That review only had Lou and Innie at the table… this time our party was 6-people strong, and the feelings were relatively the same. Yay to organic and fair-trade coffee! Yay to tasty vegetarian fare (honest, we didn’t even miss meat at this place)! Yay to the use of 100% cyan to full effect in their branding. This lil’ blue bird will be a favourite for a long, long time…
Check out our individual food reviews here: husk.co.nz/lunches/kokako-june-2017

pretty busy cafe, was there on a Saturday. Food is vegetarian and very good, nice hot chocolate. Staff was friendly but forgot our meal, otherwise service is a bit too slow. We waited for nearly 40 minutes for the food and by this point the cafe was half empty. Hopefully a one off from a service standpoint, otherwise cool place.

Awesome cafe. Busy Sunday morning and the first day of their new menu but we didn't have to wait that long for food. We all really enjoyed our meals, particularly the carrots with dukkah - would recommend that! The avocado dish was yum and so were the mushrooms, even though we may have expected them to be a bit generic, they were delicious. Coffee also great. The cabinet food looks incredible and worth going back for.

Kokako deserve a special mention with their menu predominantly designed for Vegetarians and Vegans. Kudos on standing out in that area! For such a niche cafe you would expect them to be less busy but it was anything but. The cafe was bustling and a hive of activity with a lot of punters coming in for takeaways as well as a sit in. A great healthy way to start your day guilt free. We were a party of four ordering different items off their menu. I must say I was surprised by just 6 main items on their breakfast/brunch menu, it totally made sense for their outfit. They have other different items on and off menu like smoothies, beverages, kid friendly menu and some yummy looking baked goodies on display. Another mention for dog parents like me on the look out for dog friendly cafes, there is a table out front and comes with a nearby water bowl for our pawed companions. Another Brownie point in my books . The menu at first sight comes across as simple with the question, will they be able to justify the price for this plate! My answer at the end is a resounding Yes. The creativity and flavour combinations in itself lend to a nicely crafted brunch plate. I have uploaded pics of what we had. Overall we all came out satisfied with both portions and taste. Especially their home brewed flat white coffee with a double shot espresso was just the galvanising kick you need in the morning we all were raving about. So my ratings are as follows. Creativity 9; Presentation 8; Taste 8.5; Price 7; Ambience 9; Parking 3.

Has been eyeing this restaurant for a while and glad to finally here. We ordered four dishes + 1 side from the menu and everything were very pretty, nicely done and super delicious (who even though they are all vegetariannnn, nyumm!!!)
It is very hard to pick a favourite as they are all delicious in their own way. My favourite probably the chargilled courgette.

Atmosphere was very nice too, cozy place with good light from bright sunshine.

The only reasons it is 4.5 instead of 5 was due to our waiting time for the food, it is probably our mistake arrived quite early but we were wait for a while (30mins plus) for our dishes.

Thank youuuu for beautiful dish and I cannot wait for the next visit to Kokako

A beautiful hidden spot at the corner in Grey Lynn. The cafe layout is a bit industrial but still cozy and separates the space very nicely into different corners. Fresh flowers gave it a colourful and personal touch.
Staff was friendly and quick. We felt very comfortable. The menu offers a selection of vegetarian dishes. We picked the chargrilled courgette and the coconut mushrooms. The portions were really generous and filling. The taste was rich and balanced. I absolutely enjoined the combined flavours: courgette with lentils, beetroot hummus and some sour apples slices.
The coffees were also very nice and strong. One of the few cafes which offers coconut milk!
Nice spot if you are after some different flavours.
Gets my vote for best vegetarian cafe in Auckland. You could even take meat-eaters here and they'd be happy, the food is so tasty. Well known for great coffee. Trendy decor and friendly staff.

Enjoyed my coconut milk mocha with cinnamon and brownie bite on the side. Yum! I have been missing Welli coffee and their coffee made me feel at home. Flash house with new old school stuff in it type of feeling. Light and airy atmosphere. Lots of clean corners to tuck yourself into. Ordered the fried taro ($9) and the smashed avo and edamame ($5 I think?) sides for a snack. Compared to a large piece of $2.50 taro in Otara the fried taro was small at that price and was over dressed in seasoning and sauce. Probably perfect for people to try who haven't grown up eating kalo like me. I was excited about the idea of a bowl of taro fries with a lil seasoning. Edamame got a bit lost in avo. Still yum but I should have asked if it was going to be smooshed. Friendly helpful staff! ^_^

Did not enjoy my cup of coffee, didn't like the beans and quality of the made drink was poor. Paid $5 for large and got a shock of my life, never seen a large size to be that small.

Such a homely feel, lots of nooks and corners and heaps of trendy people on their MacBooks. I feel out of place LOL!

No doubt they have good coffee, great place to have a cuppa and a catch up...

The food looked good but didn't get a chance to try it. Next time!:)

Mind blowing explosions of taste. A little pricey for what is in your plate but so delicious. (Not to mention the waiters looked just as delicious) :) the service was attentive, the vibe was cheerfully relaxed. Even my companion who is not a vegetarian was very impressed and satisfied. I will be back!

I am primarily a carnivore and love my meats when I go out for a meal. That being said however the food at Kokako is one of the most tastiest dishes I have had in a while. So much flavours put together in one dish it makes you forget that you prefer meat over vegetables. Highly recommended!

Neat little cafe in Grey Lynn. Amazing interior, fresh and delicious food and most importantly, amazing coffee. The flat white was done perfect but was especially pleasantly surprised with the cold brew that my friend got. Will def be going back soon for the coffee and to try other things on the menu :)
Maureen Grace Kuran
This simple cafe is one of the best in grey lynn.. the food are great especially the Burnt Butter and Zucchini Waffles! Staff are good too and prices are standard. Definitely will go back there again!
Rosemary Bailey
WOW was so impressed with this place. Service was spot on. I often go to places and think this is a nice meal that I could make at home but I could not dream of recreating such a delicious meal. My husband and I will be returning soon.

Best gluten free breakie I have had in Auckland yet! The buckwheat pancakes are the perfect treat. So many gf options. Ideal for all gluten freers out there.

Coffee cup sizes are downsizing all across cafes, except at McDonalds & Wild Bean Café. We found the same here when we saw patrons drinking coffee from tee wit bigger than shot size cups, so we opted to try Organic Tea (Kawakawa Lemongrass & Ginger), it was cleansing and warm. We came in with appetite, went for Chia Seed Bircher (could have been a bit more sweet), Burnt Butter Zucchini waffles and Wild Mushrooms on Toast. Very satisfying, bit pricey. Will pay visit soon.

Absolutely faultless! This place is a dream for those with gluten or dairy intolerances or any food allergies! They are very accommodating and open to menu changes. We had the fritters and potato hash with the cauliflower and kumara sides. Well the sides were outstanding! Mains were delish too and coffee is strong and perfect!

I've been to Kokako several times for coffee. It's almost always spot on, my pick for coffee in Grey Lynn.

Food wise, I haven't been often enough to work my way through much of the menu. On our most recent visit, I ordered the baked eggs (which the kitchen staff tweaked a bit to make it dairy free, I think the dish normally comes with sone grated cheese?). It was a solid dish, but I would have liked a bit more punch to the tomato base and possibly a slightly longer cooking time to soften the chick peas. The greens were a nice touch and overall I enjoyed the dish.

My partner ordered the burnt butter waffle. This was a bit too salty (or some components were).

Service was polite and quick, and accommodating to make changes to the menu when there were plenty of dairy free options already.

Overall, we thought the menu was interesting, with more than enough interesting options to choose from. Execution wasn't quite as good as what we were expecting, but there are still dishes on the menu I want to go back for.

It's worth noting that the cabinet is a good one. They even have vegan baking...
I'm Hungry
Such a cure little cafe in the midst of grey lynn village. We stopped here for some coffee in between some mad house hunting on a Sunday morning. The cafe was absolutely packed. Coffee was good but what makes me write a review is the hospitality of the staff. They made sure we were made comfortable, found us stools, made chit-chat even though they were so busy. We are moving in the neighborhood so looking fwd to many more brunches here.
Katy
Had delicious brunch here today. I had the savoury waffles with mushrooms and truffle oil which was delicious. Coffee was excellent and so was the service. Was very busy and can see why as definitely one of the best vegetarian cafes in Auckland. Looking forward to going back :)
John Kaminski
Great place have been a regural loyal customer for 2 years and the staff is awsome, Andy the Batista makes the best coffee and the manager Jo is cool and friendly ! It's a Kokako family and I love this place
Zoe Ann Hopkins Chorn
Spectacular breakfast - very accommodating with my tailoring of the menu and very friendly staff. I got the Vegan hash without the mushrooms and relish and they gave me beans instead :) very happy to give me a takeaway container for my leftovers and also helped us with directions into the CBD.
Ron Beernink
Too pretentious. Too expensive. And a menu that is too limited. Staff didn't seem interested. Not keen to go back. So just a low score of 2.
Winnie Luo
Very coffee orientated cafe! Great place for coffee lovers to go and try different types of coffee.

Originally wanted to order a Chemex but unfortunately they weren't available today so we got some aeropress instead. The coffee used today was very light, perfect for summer but just a little bit too light for my personal preference.

The food was very pleasant, I've been hunting high and low for a cafe that does good scrambled eggs in Auckland and this was one of the best so far! I ordered scrambled eggs on sourdough and my partner had the chilli eggs, both very amazing. We were both very satisfied with our meals even though it was vegetarian and we didn't get our bacon, our tummies were very happy.

Service is a bit on the slower side, and the layout of the cafe was a little chaotic. Took us a while to figure out where to sit and where the menus were as noone was greeting diners at the door. Took us another while to place the food order as it was quite busy. The waiters were very nice and friendly though.

The whole meal came to $50. Pricey for breakfast but overall good experience and would definitely return for more!

I have been looking forward to going back to Kokako for some time. When they were closer to the Domain I used to frequent this cafe a lot more....

But I have to say that I wasn't all that impressed with the food. I had the sourdough with avocado, tomato, basil and jalapeños and I added a poached egg. Not too expensive but nothing exciting. The breakfast was pretty fool-proof but lacked in finesse. There was only oil in the avocado. A wee bit of vinegar or other sauce would have been great. My flat white was very nice, however.

My husband had the chilli eggs and his corn bread was dry and a bit too salty and the beans were a little floury. The inclusion of chickpeas into the bean mix was a bit strange. The eggs were well cooked. His breakfast was $18.20 which seemed a little steep for the quality. We won't be rushing back.....
Vincent Warner
As far as vegetarian Cafes go this is hands down the best place I've ever been to. The coffee is really well made, and the cold brew is great as well. The chilli eggs are one of my favourite meals on the menu but after having tried a couple of other meals I can say they are all pretty darn good. I think what really makes the food good is the freshness of the produce and the care with which they prepare it. My only qualm is no salmon. I know it's vegetarian slash vegan but I love salmon and probably would never leave if they served it. Great place though and I will certainly go again.
Isi
Kokako is a surprising find and definitely one of Grey Lynn's better cafes, with a great menu and nice atmosphere. The staff are always really friendly and the coffee goes down a treat!
Tania Louk
How have I been living in Grey Lynn for so many years and never thought to pop in to try out Kokako!

What an amazing experience! Good food presented perfectly. My new favourite place for seriously good food!

I partner and I shared the chilli eggs and my god! Also the peanut smoothie was good and dairy free
Layla Bluck-Wulf
Great combinations with flavours - absolute favourite in the photo and amazing coffee. Makes me feel so good when eating there and the salads are amazing aswell.
Neil Fieldsend
Great spot. I had the Hash and enjoyed it. I am not a grizzler but they should check the temperature of the coffee. It was really warm, not hot. Apart from that. It was enjoyable
HappyTummiez
Kokako. Has a nice ring to it! Very cutesy I must say. We've been to this quaint and funkily decorated cafe twice now. Don't know what it was before, but definitely curious thanks to the original furnishings and what have you. Clinically clean as well! Their service is always superb and the staff are great, always patient and ready to engage in some light banter. Who doesn't like a bit of banter.

So the first round involved tasting out the food from the pastry case. I had the salad which as you can see is very vibrant and full of different ingredient. It was well balanced in my opinion. Fit for a bunny. The bear meanwhile had the panini and an carrot cake. These were both also very delicious, however the carrot cake was a little too heavily coated with icing according to the Bear... who says he's an expert in carrot based confectionery (he's not really). The second time we went, we ordered Chilli Eggs and The Hash. My Chilli eggs came with cornbread and avocado which was interesting yet tasty. The cornbread was super interesting and it went well it the chilli. Crumbled very easily (are cornbreads supposed to crumble?). The Hash was pretty much another version of Eggs Ben. For the ordered food, the only real comment was that the portions were on the small side. The Bear reckons it could be bigger, then again he eats a tonne, so maybe not one for you big eaters.

Other things to say about the place, is that is gets really warm around midday/noontime even in the dead of winter. Really nice to escape the wind. This is the stomping grounds for the great JC, or as everyone else likes to call him, John bloodyfantastic Campbell. They've got ample parking one block away. A bit of a pre and post workout to burn off a bit of that fat fat. All in all the place is great. It's got a very different vibe to it, and that's all good. Will definitely be coming back here if we're ever in the area. Until next time, Eat Well and Make Merry!

Another one of my favourite places. Smoothies are amazing!! I got the energiser sandwich I think and it was the best thing ever. 10/10 recommend. And lovely service!

Kokako is Grey Lynn's glorious, humming hub of damn good vegetarian fare and organic (house-roasted) coffee. The best part is that it's open from 6:30am - hello leisurely Monday-morning feasts.

Service was quick, friendly, and relaxed, and within fifteen minutes of arriving I had a gorgeous spread laid out on the table - a mountain of vegan goodness known as 'The Energizer Spread', and a jar of green juice (My Green Goodness). Broccoli has never tasted quite so delicious. The portions were ample, and thanks to the nut and seed toast, cashew aioli, and avocado sprinkled with dukkah, it was a filling fix.

The cafe itself is mesmerising - an old post office evolved into a high-ceilinged, checkered-floored eatery, proudly perched on Grey Lynn's busiest intersection. Window seat highly recommended - today I was fortunate enough to observe a hobbling grey-haired man doling out 'free tickets to heaven'. I appreciated their music selection (Tame Impala and Frank Ocean, yessir), and am generally thankful they offer a decent environment to work and gorge at such an ungodly hour.

Kokako, you hip little thang - I can tell that this is just the beginning of an enduring (and freaking tasty) friendship.

Food: 4.5/5
Service: 5/5
Value: 4.5/5

This cafe is very quite and cosy with lots of seating and gets a lot of sun midday. I ordered the free range scrambled eggs on toast on toast with rocket Paisley spinach pesto coming to a total of $13.00 also ordering a orange juice coming to $5.00. The service was great with staff coming to you straight away and very friendly and smiley. The room was bright and colourful and lots of great places to sit. I recommend this place definitely as it gave a great welcoming feel and good vibes.

A must for all vegetarians/vegans/anyone in need of a healthy, tasty pick me up. Had the creamy mushroom ragout on risotto cake and the berry kombucha. Mushroom dish was so filling but felt like eating feathers. I am usually suspicious of kombucha but Kokako's was fresh and delicious, will definitely be back.
Las Akurugoda
I have been to this place few times recently. Tried some vegan food which was top notch. Service was fantastic. Great place to catch up with few friends or to have a business meeting in style .
Scott Kennedy
Great venue, great service, great food. Stumbled across this spot while walking down great north road looking for something to eat. Will definitely return. The kombucha I ordered was good but came in a glass and no one explained if it was in house or had just been poured for me.
Steph Korucu
Only had coffee and cake but Kokako was spot-on. Their building doesn't look particularly inviting from the outside but inside is spacious, light and sunny (if there is any!)- a fairly rare find for inside a central cafe. Decor is awesome, coffee of course delicious (already knew it and that's why I went) and I had an oaty caramel slice that was off-the-scale.
Samantha Galvez
Awesome spot with the best coffee! In love with the full veg menu and I'm not even vegetarian! A place to beat in the Grey Lynn/Ponsonby area.
Paul Evans
Kokako is always consistently good. The coffee is hot and strong and the different blends are always nice to try...or get a chemix if you're feeling all fancy and hipster.

The meals are always delicious, great flavour combinations and not just your boring old standard brunch fare...a wee bit out of the ordinary (in a good way).

The cabinet food is great too!

But a meat eater like me, would just love a little bit of bacon sometimes ;)

Because my partner loves chemix coffee and he want to have a little lesson so we visited there.
We got a best table just in front of the Batista working and he had a little lesson from one of barista, who kindly showed him equipment they use.

It is very cute environment, very trendy.
Cabinet food is quite usual thing, but the food menu is something little twist from other cafe which I really like.
They have those All-Day Menu which isn't very attract me, but I am in love with their sticky rice and coconut cream, papaya, lime soup.
This is something I don't really see in cafe in New Zealand.
My partner ordered vegetalian open sandwich looks so delicious! I had a little bite and it is fantastic flavour!
My sticky rice soup is delicious yet the lime flavour was a bit strong.
But I like it overall!

Staff is very kind, return for asking if the food was alright(yes I like it so much!).
I will definitely go back when I am hungry!!!

Was nice having brunch here, really like the decor and the vibe. Had yummy soy buckwheat pancakes - was worried about might be very sweet with the syrup but it turned out just amazing. Coffee was ok, maybe too many shots for such a tiny cup.

Kokako is just a short walk away for me but I must admit, when I visited the other afternoon it was a bit of a disappointment.

I ordered the kumara & quinoa fritters with cashew aioli and fennel, orange and coriander salad. At $19.20, you would expect either a very well plated and tasty dish or at least a decent portion, however portions were quite skimpy. Two thin fritters, cashew aioli and a small side salad was all you got for the steep $19.20 price - it was something you could easily cook to the same standard at home for a mere fraction of the price. They were okay, but neither my boyfriend or I were particularly overwhelmed and I don't see us going back for the food (although I did appreciate them using cashew aioli over an animal based one).

The service was okay although a little bit awkward. The only thing I really thought Kokako had going for it was the bright and open interior, and I hear the coffee is good too although I'm not the biggest coffee drinker myself.

Overall:
Food: 3/5
Service: 3/5
Value: 2/5

Instagram: @recoveringraw

Being a vegetarian I'm normally only have 2 options but here I struggled to make up my mind !! I got the braised lentil which were really yum. The coffee didn't quiet hit the mark I enjoy a really fluffy cappacino which is hard to find these days . The deco was really cute and fresh. I would give it a 5 but the waiter only have us one glass of water and didn't refill it , which was a little annoying as I drink a lot of water . Otherwise I will be back soon !

The staff here are wonderful. Always smiling and friendly. Delicious coffee (they even do a coconut milk flat white) and the hash cake is scrumptious!

A little on the pricey side but you can see why as Kokako cafe seems to use quality ingredients and the staff are always great and seem really happy, so I assume they're treated well. I love that the menu is all veg friendly and has a number of exciting items. When I first visited Kokako a few years ago they had a delicious eggs on toast option which included mushrooms, avocado and an amazing olive based topping- I'd love to see that back on the menu! Occasionally I've had a slightly burnt soy coffee, which has been disappointing but not undrinkable :)

5/5 simply because you can't beat their creamy mushrooms!! I'm addicted. Coffee is always amazing too! Friendly staff and pretty good service. Highly recommend for any vegetarians as there is so much choice!

Great vegetarian menu and one of the best tofu scrambles I've ever eaten. Yes it was good! Fab coffee and kid friendly without being too rowdy

I like this space, it's bright and clean and the staff are attentive and always happy to explain their beverages menu. I've been a few times and if you're a lover of big brekkies w. sausages or bacon. This is not the place for you. The menu's lighter and healthier but just as delicious, not a scrap of meat in sight. Had a hot chocolate this time round too as had just had coffee @ a friend's place beforehand.

One odd thing did happen, I went up to check the counter cabinet while my friends were asking the person serving us questions and on the way back I asked her what the meal was that was about to be taken out to some diners, I commented that it looked great and when we were ready to order, I told her what I wanted and she said ""I've actually already ordered that for you." LUCKILY it was the meal I'd asked her about. Lol. I ordered the hash and it was good. Would happily come back, especially for another one of their brews.

Kokako has downsized their menu, which is a bit of a shame. Food is pricey but really tasty and wholesome. However the service was a bit shocking last time I was there last Friday. I ordered and the waitress got my smoothie drink order incorrect twice and there was quite a wait for the drink as the food came out first. Then the dirty dishes sat on the table for almost an hour after we finished eating. Anyway, still a nice indoor space but wish they had more of an outdoor area seating, especially on nice sunny days.

great food and interesting to try their food - being organic and vegetarian they have some interesting things , that all tasted quite good - their cold coffee and Kambucha (?) are a must try
Bizcochito
Great atmosphere and service with good coffee, although the batch brew can be hit and miss on the taste, nice long black though. Value for money could be better but it seems like they use high quality ingredients so I can live with this. I've had the muesli and the hash and was pleased with both. Great local to have in Grey Lynn!

First time ever in this cafe my first impression was it's traditional settings very beautiful and now down to the coffee alwsome was with a friend David we meet 23 years ago and enjoy it very well but the highlight of the visit the staff are super friendly it's rear to find in a crowded Industry but Kim really showed it today I think and know that people like her makes the visit more interesting thanks Kim for the warm service.
John kemp

Nice variety of coffees combined with good baristsas, friendly and attentive staff and kid friendly atmosphere make it a must visit. Rotating menus that are delicious keep the foodies coming back (my current fav is Vegetarian Hash Cake). Their smoothies are amazing as well (Chocolate nice one with a shot of cold drip coffee is great for summer)

Food: This organic vegetarian cafe has a unique and creative menu. Don't expect the usual items nor will there be bacon or sausages. Kokako uses local growers and supplies, perfect for any health-conscious individuals.

Coffee: Organic Fairtrade Kokako coffee. You can choose to have a Chemex, V60, cold drip, cold brew or straight from the espresso machine. My Chemex was perfect.

Price: Dishes around $11-$22

Location and Parking: Despite being close to Ponsonby and on the busy Great North Road, it's in a quiet area with plenty of street parking available.

Dining Experience: We were dining as a group of 5 with a baby and the staff were accommodating and helpful with securing our table. Delightfully surprised that although it was a busy day for them, the service was friendly and the food was served in a timely manner

Was just served expensive, tepid coffee. Know this place is popular and trendy but there's too much competition in this trade for me to be tempted to go back.

Organic vegetarian cafés are trending in Auckland atm and why not jump on board. Kokako offers a wide variety and unique menu (despite the no meat thing) with pretty reasonable prices accompanying. The Mexican beans was a solid brunch choice - filling, warm and quite tasty however it lacked that special something and I liked the scrambled tofu better that my companion ordered, it had that extra flavour from the fusion of chilli, ginger, sesame and lime. Iced mocha was top notch (not that fake stuff you get at some places) and apparently the coffee is one of the best + organic/fair trade. The quirky interior and friendly service matches the vibe.
Nita
Had lunch there yesterday, although pricey but loved the meals and would certainly go back. we had polenta bake with mushrooms and scrambled tofu - both dishes were great.
Caitlin
Wasn't expecting much when I arrived here for brunch around lunchtime on a Thursday but I was (very) pleasantly surprised.

I had the bubble and squeak, which was pricey ($17.50) but was well worth the money spent, being easily the best brunch meal I have ever eaten out in Auckland. The balance of the tangy, spiced chutney, blanched spinach, creamy hollandaise and salty potato hash was on point, and left me craving more. The egg was perfectly poached, which can be hard to come across these days!

Food came out very quickly, as did coffee. All round a fabulous brunch experience, will definitely be back soon (when I've saved up $$).

This is hands down my favourite place for breakfast in Auckland.

COFFEE - Amazing. Best in Auckland. Smooth, velvety, on the milder side.

FOOD - Vegetarian, imaginative, unique, delicious. I would suggest a person who is not familiar with the earthier flavours of whole foods may find the menu slightly confronting.

SERVICE - Always exceptional. Highly surprised by the few negative feedbacks.

ATMOSPHERE - Regularly bustling, great decor, hipster as.

PRICE - On the steeper side, but well worth it. You get what you pay for.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND - Hash cakes, pancakes and mushrooms on toast (add a poached egg). The Kombucha is yummy too.

FINAL NOTE - Kokako is always consistent. I know I will get the same friendly smiles, good coffee and fantastic food every time I go there. Have never had a bad experience there (visit about once a month for the past 2 years).

Ate breakfast at Kokako with my wife after a long walk this morning. First time we have eaten there. Service was as good as it gets in Grey Lynn. The coffee was in my opinion a little burnt in the roasting but adequate. My wife (the Belgian) found the pancakes heavy and not terribly appealing. My free range eggs were very pale and I would be surprised if the hens who laid them have seen any grass. The butter I requested for the toast has been sitting around for too long and had oxidized, for that read rancid. Overall we felt that it was a poor $38.00 value.

Love this cafe - have been numerous times in the past couple of weeks and the service has always been exceptional, the food delicious and the coffee on the mark!

Trying to find something that is Gluten Free can really be a hassle when eating out, but Kokako has an impressive selection of G.Free options and they are happy to check to see if things in their food can be altered to taste too. Compliments to the team!

Try out their coffee, it's worth the visit alone!

I was very pleasantly surprised with Kokako. The coffee and food were all delicious. The food is all organic and free range yet the prices are similar to other central city cafes, so I think their pricing is fair enough. Two very filling meals and two coffees come to $38. I went for breakfast and it was the perfect start to my day. The staff were nice, but one staff member was exceptional. I thought he might have been the manager because he seemed to be helping another staff member on the till. He was genuinely polite and didn't stop smiling the whole time. Overall, I had a great experience and will definitely go back next time I'm in the area.

Very surprised by some of the reviews here.
I had lunch at Kokako today and thought the food was fantastic. How refreshing to have such a different menu.
I had the mushroom and avocado on sour dough with pesto. It was delicious!! My partner had the hash cake and said it was the best he had eaten. ( he eats a lot of hash cakes!)
The butter beans side was different and very tasty. Everything tasted very fresh and healthy.

Staff were polite and attentive and the food came out quickly despite it being very busy.

Highly Recommended. We will be back.

After much hype about how great their coffee is decided to visit this morning. The staff were bordering on rude, no smiling or basically any personality. The barista mumbled under his breath when my coffee was ready, didn't even look at me at all, is it too hard to actually acknowledge customers? Didn't order food but from what I saw other diners eating the portions looked meager for what they charge.

Pro: Organic food and coffee, lots of plantbased options, very yummy, great variety of coffees to choose from, very friendly staff, nice atmosphere.

I'm supposed to enter more text now. Well, I think it's summed up nicely. The food is really nice, the coffee as well, there is a great variety of options for coffee and food, and also the smoothies are super yumm,

Nice enough, good atmosphere. Food was yummy but way overpriced for what I had at any rate. I was still hungry after forking out $16 for a piece of tart and a couple pieces of potato salad.
Sam
Have been here 4 times now.. Food is delicious but the front staff are lacking basic manners or any kind of personality.. Is it that hard to greet your customers or smile??
Liz
Lunched today - nice decor, nice service, boring bland overpriced food, tepid coffee. Couldn't even finish frittata, mates poached eggs were tiniest we've ever seen - bantam eggs? With all the preciousness about sourcing ingredients, why such a limited boring menu?

My friend and I dined here on a Sunday morning.
She ordered a Pacific Princess smoothie, $6.50 and I, a flat white. The smoothie came in a vintage mason jar which was a nice touch, the flavour nice, but nothing spectacular. My flat white was great, nice flavour and nice price too, only $4!
I ordered the organic potato hash cake, $17.50 and her, the scrambled eggs, $12. When the food was delivered, we were very unimpressed. There was one hash cake with a dollop of feta cheese and half an avocado sliced on top. Tasted great, but it was incredibly over priced for what it was. The scrambled eggs left a lot to be desired and one measly slice of toast, yeesh.
The service was good, friendly enough but the decor was the stand out feature of our whole experience! The open coffee roastery and kitchen was great, the place had a great, light, open atmosphere and the old school hall benches were a great touch!

Would I go here again? Yes, but only for coffee.
Gerard
This newly opened cafe is an absolute delight. For a start they roast their own branded wonderful organic & fairtrade coffee - very interesting coffee & tea menu (Vietnamese Macchiato?) featuring complementary extras such as organic milk. The breakfast/brunch food is vegetarian (you won't miss the meat at all), healthy and creative (if you're tired of Eggs Benedict or 'big Kiwi' breakfasts step right up). Put it this way, if you tell me there's a better breakfast dish than the huevos rancheros-inspired baked eggs with black beans, chilli, kumara and miniature corn-bread I'll tell you you're dreaming. Also delivers the kind of service you take for granted overseas but don't see much in New Zealand.

I like to visit a lot of cafes around Auckland & I have to say this is my new favourite. I do prefer healthy food so this ticks the boxes. The interior looks very cool & is a lovely space to spend time in. Staff were very warm & friendly. I thought the food was fresh, well presented & tasty. Coffee was great also but the blueberry almond milk & goji berry shake yum! I'll be back.
Glen
Just thought I'd offer my 2 cents as I couldn't agree less with the previous poster (in fact I thought I had the wrong café when I read their post!).

The food is excellent (if a little lacking in the bacon department). The staff are delightful and the décor is very very tasteful.

The coffee ... oh the coffee. You know when you get good coffee – I mean really good coffee – and you finish your cup and think about rocking back up and getting another straight away? That's what it's like.
And it's Fair Trade. And it's cheaper than most other cafés. Thanks, guys.

Best of all, the place is as unpretentious as you could get, which makes it the coolest place around. Forget P Rd. I'll be eating in Grey Lynn from now on.
Oscar
I was looking forward to go to this place. Nice staff, nice building but bad food. My hash brown were uncooked and the coffee took for ever. I sent the food back because it was just horrible but the wait staff was nice and apologised. Expensive for what it is and the biggest selling point is the building rather than the food. No going back!!

I had heard great things about Kokako and was so excited to try out their vegan breakfast.

I have to say, the coffee is really nice. The breakfast however, a bit disappointing. The two times I tried this place out, they didn't have any specific vegan breakfast, which confused me as they seem to pride themselves on being vegan friendly. The waitress also had a hard time understanding what vegan actually meant, it was all a very strange experience. After a good 10 min of her talking to the chef, something was made for me (some kidney bean thing on toast. it didn't taste that good) . I don't really like making a fuss, but I do really like it when a place tries to adapt their menu for vegans, but Kokako says they are vegan. I was very confused.

I would try this place again, but definitely not for breakfast.

Pretty neat and quirky little place tucked away in the corner of an intersection in grey Lynn. As soon as I looked at their menu, I instantly got excited and intrigued by the number of different options, different from the regular cafe menus. Tried the buckwheat soy pancakes and creamy mushroom polenta. Gotta say presentation was really good, food looked really appetising on the plate. I liked how they've prepared the polenta. Definitely preferred it to another one I tried in Melbourne. Also ordered the cold brew, they only do it in black and not white though.

Good coffee, great food, child friendly but with people from all stages of life. Friendly fast service. The best tofu scramble I've eaten. Healthy options as well as standard fare you can construct yourself

You may have heard of Kokako coffee, they supply coffee to cafes all around Auckland. In addition to their roastery in Grey Lynn, they also have a cute cafe. I headed there for lunch today to meet a friend and it was bustling. The menu was completely vegetarian and mostly organic but I am not sure if this is always the case as it doesn't mention it on the website.

As well as coffees, I ordered the granola, fruit salad and yoghurt and my friend ordered the Mexican breakfast (beans, eggs, salsa and tortilla), both were delicious. This is definitely a good option if you want good coffee and healthy food.
