Food is Amazing so delicious, coffee is also a hit when you need the caffeine. Great location and a good place to catch up with friends
Michelle Kwak
The coffee tasted good, but the staff was displeased because they tried to take the plates quickly.

Delicious food and coffee. We had a great coffee time here after shopping at Dress Smart Outlet…

Lovely staff and restaurant. Yummy food 🥘 Went back for Good Friday Brunch with our mokos, noticed there is a playpen on the other end of the shop which we haven’t been the last we were here and toilet is so clean. Kudos 👍

If you are a fun of dressmart and you are hungry, this is a best and convenient cafe to be. It is located just beside dressmart. I recommend the southern fried chicken, yum with aioli dip. It is a busy cafe its like there is no downtime but we didnt wait that long for our order. They have outdoor table as well. Huge place for cafe. Good service with huge food option.

🚻♿ Easy to find place right next to a roundabout. Parking available around the streets. Seating on the outside for the nice cooler air. Lots of seating indoors a large spacious venue. I ordered the pork, egg and 🧇 waffles which was delicious I have never had that before and that was a good choice (check my photo's) Good service and meals 😋

Delicious food and coffee. Wonderfully friendly staff. A great vegan, plant based menu Would go again & recommend to others Disability access and toilets

Scrumptious tacos! The iced coffee blend was thick and creamy too, nicely made. Service could’ve been more courteous

1st visit and food was tasty! Fish tacos were so delicious and coffee was great. What stood out to me the most was the kindness and empathy displayed by a young male working at the register. He asked if it was ok to order our coffees in 10mins to give the barista some time, as she was overwhelmed. Didn’t bother me at all and probably gave me more time to think of what order i’d like for lunch than panic order 😅 Recommended and will be back for sure!

We came by for lunch before heading into Dressmart. It wasn't too busy, we were lucky in that a booth became free just as we were about to be seated and ended up there. The place is fairly large and does have indoor and outdoor seating. The outdoor seating is also covered so it doesn't look like there is a lot of direct sunlight on the tables. They have cabinet food as well as a menu. There were quite a few things on the menu which looked good but I ended up going with the chicken waffles. I had the chocolate and coconut shake as well and that was quite nice. It had more of a coconut flavour than chocolate. The waffles were really nice. they were crispy on the outside and quite soft on the inside. IT was topped with the fried chicken, spicy maple syrup and a fried egg. I found that the maple soaked into the waffles quite fast making them quite soggy. They were still tasty but it didn't have the crunch that I liked. The chicken was fried nicely and that stayed crispy for the whole meal. My brother got the pork belly waffle and the pork belly was also fried nicely with nice flavour. It was quite a nice stop for a meal. The servers were all friendly. they also had a play area but it was closed off when we were there.

Situated in the middle of Onehunga, this lovely eatery is the perfect place for your next business meeting or brunch. Trading hours are 7:30 am to 3 pm Monday to Friday, and 8 am to 3:30 pm on weekends. Perks of visiting include free parking at the back, free Wi-Fi, booths with power points and an area for your little ones to play. The menu is diverse – including American soul food, Mediterranean, Latin and vegan. Every diet is catered for. On our last visit we treated ourselves to the wonderful range of breakfast/brunch options. Menu items ordered: - Onehunga Grill (breakfast sausage, your choice of eggs, mushrooms, roasted spuds, mini hash, grilled vine tomatoes, toast). DF, $23 -Farmer’s Waffles (American style waffles, house apple crumble, fresh strawberries, preserved peaches, marscapone whip, served with house salted caramel sauce) with side of hash brown V, $14 + $5.50 -2 Large trim lattes ($5.50 ea). Cabinet/counter item(s) ordered: -Chantilly cream doughnut ($5) The vibe in here screams relaxed but hip. The ceiling is gold and reflective (Very fun to look at). Fun fact: this used to be a music shop. The coffee is very smoothly blended and the cups are different to most eateries – they are black with a lovely little handle. They keep the heat well so there’s no need to rush. I highly recommend getting water for your table is so cool and refreshing. The entire staff are hard-working and do their best to show you a fabulous, fun and delightful time. The food is fresh off the grill and is made with love, and you can tell. Server shout out goes to Catherine for showing such kindness. My rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Friendly staff, plenty of seating options indoors and outdoors, decent drinks selection, Snickers shake was delicious. Angels on Horseback (bacon wrapped scallops) came with 3 enormous scallops wrapped in a very generous amount of bacon. Chili and Spring Onion Steak was decent, but we weren't asked how we wanted it - it just came out Medium which was fine. Ribs were a little disappointing - they were tasty, but the meat was a bit tough compared to other establishments where rib meat falls off the bone. Moroccan Fish was quite good. Good value for money.

Pork belly tacos was incredible! Perfectly roasted pork belly, spicy sauce, fresh salsa and nice pickled vegetables. Chicken waffles with a side of pork belly. Again, very flavorful. Chicken was in the brink of going on the drier side but was still a bit juicy. Waffles with berry mascarpone compote was good. A bit too tangy though. Might be nice with a tiny drizzle of syrup. Spiced calamari was delicious and crispy. Nice sauce with hints of jalapeños. Very nice. Also ordered a peanut butter thickshake. Tastes like peanut butter but a bit too sweet. Might be nice with some bits of peanut butter/Reese's? Overall, nice service and ambience :)

We ordered the big breakfast, the shared platter and the pork belly waffles& hot drinks, the portions were quite generous and filling as you can see from my photos, plus the service was pleasant and knowledgeable.will definitely return to try other meu items.
We were here for brunch, visited for the first time. Very spacious, family crowd, good fresh food, reasonable. We ordered summer toast , Grill breakfast, hot chocolate and Coffee. Summer toast is a must try one, loved the mix n match of flavours n spices in it. A good vegetarian meal and filling too.

Have just had brunch in here, I really love my vegan grill something (like big breakfast) i forgot the name on the menu 😅
Its so good! And my partner waffle he said so nice as well ☺️
We sat outside and its. Ice ambience in there!
Overall we’re happy!

The food here is fantastic and today is the first time we’ve been back since the lockdown. At Level 2, unfortunately the kiddie area is still fenced off and the menu options has shrunk. Nevertheless, the place is still worth a visit as the food is delicious. :)

Unable to change bacon & sausages out of Full breakfast, very disappointing. Great waitress though however had a 15cm black hair on my plate under my second half of my salmon Bene. Didn’t bother complaining however check your food before you eat!

Attracted by the aesthetics from the outside. We decided to get a spicy pork belly waffle and a grilled chicken burger. They were under summer menu which is more pricier than normal. The wait for food was very long, could be because of great numbers of customers. When the food did arrive it looked amazing, looked like it had a large portion of food and very instagram worthy. However the spicy pork waffle was not worth $19.50. There were only 3 pieces of pork all about less than a finger length and the rest are 4 stacked waffles, but they did have a sunny side up on the very top. Overall we feel like we paid most if it for the many waffles they gave for this dish. However the grilled burger was delicous, worth giving this a try.

Nice place to have lunch, good environment and service

They didn’t receive my order when I asked if they could check it was missed. My partner was finished eating. I paid for my salad and received a rushed poorly presented salad. Bacon was soggy. The poach egg was barely cooked. The lettuce was wilted from the hot bacon and chicken shoved on it. My first time I was here I loved it but from this experience I don’t reckon I’ll be back.
Chandeep
If you are charging me 17.90 for a doughy waffle and 2 tiny pieces of chicken.....that’s just not good enough!
DankLegend
Amazing and friendly service. Perfectly seasoned fried chicken and perfectly made waffles. The new coffee - dope.
Adawetzell
Was disappointed with the service we received this day, there was a group of 5 of us and all got our dishes and different times. We ordered chicken and waffles and thought the chicken to waffle ratio was really bad, you only get two small size chicken pieces for 4 waffles, and especially since weve been here before we were not satisfied.

The place is always busy, hence why there is a letdown on tidiness. There were a couple of seizure-inducing, flickering light bulbs that they need to replace soon. Staff didn't seem to bother cleaning the tables after each customer.

The spuds and tarakihi fish didn't taste fresh perhaps due to the old frying oil. Whoever prepared my avo on toast didn't bother doing it with finesse, as the avo was just slapped on toast and had inconsistent texture.
Pig Cat
Alternative place to grab a lunch of coffee near Dressmart. I don't really like their lunch but their croissants were super delicious. Coffee and croissants here were my favorite combo.

Rating based on a delicious flat white (Supreme beans), service and atmosphere. Great for solo’s with seating along the large windows, views to streetside. Menu and cabinet looked good, def worth another visit to try.
Sophia Kane
Pretty disappointed. The chicken was fine, waffles could be crispier, but the fried egg on top was definitely not cooked enough - I ending up scraping most of it off because it didn't look all that safe to eat. How can a chef not know how to fry an egg?
Danial Shahali
Wish to have more maple syrup on my waffles and a bit more crispy. Over all it tasted good! The Grill that us the big breakfast was good and the filter coffee was awesome 👏🏻
Neroni Mack
Good venue. Friendly staff. Banana bread and pecan pie was amazing. Hot chocolate was not hot though. And I asked for hazel nut shot in my flat white but they said they dont have syrups because it ruins the coffee. I totally get that and that is pretty fair. However the not flavoured flat white came out like this. Pretty average looking and below average tasting.

The Kumara Hash patty itself was good. However, the avocado purée was a let down, and the eggs were pretty average. The service was alright and the cafe was pretty packed inside when my friend and I got there around noon for lunch.
Deadwin
closer to 3.5
it’s a bit too busy and crowded for my liking for a cafe especially given its location along a mainstreet/roundabout of Onehunga
i must say my favourite for this place is the cheesecake brownie! Amazing taste. Coffee is decent.
Food2belly
The service was great he recommended the passionfruit muffin. The waiter said he had 4 already. He was so nice and gave me an extra one for free. But I think after tasting it I know why. I think they messed up the icing sugar with baking powder. The whole thing was not edible it was like eating a indigestion tablet which are chalky and full with baking soda. They also forgot our filo pastry in the microwave, we didn't get it till 30mins later when we asked.
Linhmichael2010
Have a unfinished lunch today as we did order 3 big meals and a shared plate. After 30 minutes, no foods were prepared. All staffs looks confused and kind of new/inexperienced. Unhappy and we have to leave without eating. Such a shame, wont be back. Cheers, Michael.

Had our Easter brunch here because our fav cafes were all closed. - thanks for opening on public holiday, 15% surcharge was kinda expecting.
We’ve got the Grill (big breakfast) and chicken waffle.
Hmmm... the grill.... hmm. Interesting taste, so interesting that I won’t order again.
The waffle was burnt...
at least the shake was good! Over price but good.
All in all, thanks for opening on public holiday but we probably won’t visit again.

Had lunch here with my friend, ordered the fried chicken burger, It was kind of disappointing! Only three tiny pieces of fried chicken sits on the bun.

Sorry, won't be back. I feel like being ripped off.

These guys are famous for their crispy-fried chicken waffles, yet funnily enough, none of us ordered it. The menu had such a wide variety, we easily overlooked it in favour or other tempting morsels. What we did notice though, was the long wait for the food and slightly off-beat service. Short on staff maybe? These less than impressive factors won’t keep us away for long though - check out their beef rib burger, stacked to the heavens! Might be time for you to wrap your laughing gear around one...

Check out our individual food reviews here: husk.co.nz/lunches/onehunga-cafe-nov-2018

Really bad coffee and the avo on toast with goats curd was really off putting. Avo and cheese was ice cold on one piece of toast. Tiny bit of tomatoes almost like the ends you would usually through out. Really disappointed!!!

Definitely not the best. We have come here occasionally over the past 5 years and it’s really gone backwards. Service is good but the food was not as per the menu and not worth the Ponsonby prices.

Want to have a brunch there this morning, but sitting there about 10mins without any greeting or attention. We sit outside by the door and servant take care 2 tables around us, greeting to customer who just come in, just ignore us...ruining my mood and head to Nandos.
Hilary Campbell
Very busy place, but nice to sit outside. We all placed our orders. When the drinks came they were tiny, coffees and juices ( pretty rip off). The meals all came together except my husband's. They had forgotten his and we went to ask and they bought it out a while later and were very good about this and gave us the meal for free, my husband said it wasn't worth the wait, very average. My meal the peanut pork roll was a bit disappointing too, very hard to eat and a knife couldn't cut through the chewy bread. The pork was nice, the rest was meh. Other meals quite small for the price you pay. Wouldn't come back due to expensive pricing and average food
Larissa Denton
Nice atmosphere, friendly staff. Food was tasty and coffee nice and strong. Unfortunately the kids said the iced chocolate and chocolate milkshake tasted like cocoa. Also, the pricing is way off. $18 for two corn fritters means next time we'll be at the cafe up the road :(
Christine Taylor
So I’ve been many times but not again! The coffee x 3 was returned twice as it was un drinkable the food/ depends on what was ordered... sorry I used to recommend this place but something has changed and not for the better won’t be returning sadly.
Lovemesumfood
This place has to be the most overpriced place for the food you get. $19 for a small piece of corn fritter that taste like... corn fritters. No wow factor that made it worth $19 which is a huge shame. The waiter promised it will be real tasty and hyped it up like it was perfect but it was far from it. The extra beans that we got which I think was $6-$7 were so disgusting and needs to be taken off the menu. Big breakfast wasn’t all that great but was probably the best thing out of everything. Out of all the big breakfasts I’ve had this one would be on the lower end. Service was okay but food was definitely a huge let down. Also the waiter said that the chefs on today were the best they had so now I know what their best is and it’s far from what we expect at these kind of priced cafes.

Had brunch in this cafe with my husband. He ordered eggs benedict with smoked kahawai, it was delicious. I actually ordered the sweet waffles with bacon, for some reason the food that was delivered to me was the savoury waffles. We informed the servers, and we were told that it will take time for them to make the sweet one. Didn’t want to wait any longer coz’ was hungry that time, so I end up having savoury waffles and bacons. The staff were nice and apologetic. Though the experience was a bit disappointing. On the other hand, I love their mocchachino. 👍🏼
Food: 4/5
Ambience 3/5
Sevice: 3
Staff friendliness/politeness) : 4/5

Service was average but they were nice and friendly overall.
We ordered the acai bowl, soft shell crab po boy, cappuccino, and hot chocolate.
Acai bowl was just some sort of rasberry smoothie with a sprinkling of granola. The granola had a cardomon taste that was weird.
The crab po boy was pretty light on the crab and only worth $10 IMO.
Coffee was burnt and undrinkable. Asked for another and it came burnt again. Hot chocolate was ok

My best friend and I stopped by this busy cafe on Saturday for lunch. There were many servers but no one was extremely attentive to us since they were preoccupied with other things. The food was great - we ordered the Chicken Waffles and the Berry Waffles, portion sizes where pretty massive but finish-able. It is quite pricey for cafe food as we spent more on the waffles than we did with our shopping that day. Because it was quite busy, the noise level in the cafe was quite high which let down the ambience down a bit. Overall I enjoyed my experience here :)

Food - 4/5
Ambience - 3/5
Service - 3/5

First time coming here with disappointment. The table was still dirty when sat down, ordered fish & chips, the fish was a little soggy, no lemon for the fish and worse of all sesame oil on the salad, sorry bout this comment but you've mixed the wrong dressing with fish & chips.

I had been meaning to come to this place for sometime. A coffee catch up with a friend was the perfect time.
We went here on a early Saturday morning and it was pretty busy. We ordered our food and coffee and I'm pretty sure our food arrived first! The food was pretty good, normal price etc. I would suggest getting here early unless you dont mind waiting at peak times.
Their outside area is also quite nice and would be awesome during the summer time!
We both ordered the waffles (see pictures).

This Cafe always looks busy so have been wanting to try it out. Ordered Caramelised Banana waffles for my toddler and I to share, I loved it but toddler hated the creme frieche so I got him something else and they were able to customise the kids waffle meal for him and so it was a waffle, ripe banana and maple syrup. Also ordered hot chocolate. Food was good but nothing to brag about and abit too expensive. Love the layout of Cafe and staff were awesome. This place probably wouldn't be a regular option for me. Also love that there's a gated kids area but it needs a makeover.

My partner, son and I visited on Sunday for lunch. My partner got the eggs benedict, my son some chips and I the pan fried fish. 2 x juices and a coffee for $60ish.

After all the hype we were a bit disappointed. While service was great, and food was beautifully presented; the taste a bit average. My fish could have done with alot more flavour. Also noted nothing for wee man who had to settle for a bowl of chips.

Nothing great, nothing bad just average unfortunately.

Been wanting to try this cafe whenever we come around Dressmart as it seems popular and always full. We tried their iced coffee & mocha, Crispy Chicken waffles and Eggs Benedict. The Eggs benedict was just ok - the eggs were overcooked and the hollandaise sauce was a bit bland. However, the dining experience was saved by the crispy chicken waffles. The chicken was crispy and well seasoned and the waffles were just cooked with the right texture - soft in the inside and a little crunchy in the edges combined with maple syrup was just delicious. The service was fast and the staff was attentive and friendly.

Adore this place - it’s pretty much great for all meals - breakfast, lunch or dinner. It’s always pack but service and food are both consistent, staffs are chill, funny and friendly. They also have live music from time to time. I love their chilli eggs, eggs benedict and coffee - always on point! And the fried chicken waffle is a must try, personally I’m not a huge fan of mixing savoury with sweet in the same dish, but man this dish changes my perception!

Best breakfast we've had fr ages. Went fr brisket hash and partner had full breakky. Lots of tasty bacon and lovely free range eggs. Hash brisket with tangy chipotle and tomatoe hollandaise was just nom nom. Good coffee and great service. Cleared plates away quickly too.
Aseem
Love me some fried chicken waffles! Really impressed with the amount of waffle, even if it was a bit too sweet. Chicken was on point, so would have loved another piece! They happily swapped the syrup with aioli for me!
N Lam
All i can say is coffee was great but the size was a bit on the small size for a medium size. Food was a bit of a disappointment. The poached eggs seems pre cooked or something, it was overcooked. The bacon was so so saltly and wasnt eatable. There was much to choose from from the cabinet ie no scones or muffins like other cafes.
Tia Lindbom
The location of this cafe is in an ideal spot. We came on a very busy day as it was a public holiday. Unfortunately the service was very slow and once the food came it was very dry and tasteless.
Rae
Always busy and very often will have a live band or something of the sort during dinner. The service there is great with very funny and welcoming wait staff that makes you feel at ease. My partner and I both ordered the eggs Benedict with bacon, spinach and an extra side of Portobello mushroom. Very nicely done with softly toasted and buttered bread instead of usually really hard and crisp sourdough bread.
Trudie Leota
Had the corn fritters which were very yummy but not very hot! Lukewarm coffee - had to ask for a fresh cup. Ordered two meals and only got one; had to follow up with Manager on two occasions before receiving the second meal. Disappointing experience!

First time here and friendly staffs but menu wise arw quite limited. Was here around 1:30pm om a weekdays and still quite busy. We ordered egg benedict with bacon and green beans grilled chickens, food arrived shortly but find that the bacon quite salty. Love the coffee tho.
Ms. Piggy Loves Food
i ordered waffles because they didn't have pancakes..$18 for this was not worth it. I could have gotten actual fluffy pancakes with caramelized bananas from the cafe next to the onehunga jewelers for half the price. over here, you pay for the environment more. Not sure if I would come back again. Lets see

Service is great ! They are a bit quirky which I bloody love
Best Spanish beans ! A bit spicy for those sensitive to spice but it was perfect for me.
My boyfriend loves the waffle and fried chicken !
Best place to go when you’re hungover and in need of a hearty meal to set you straight.
The food came out very quickly, which was great. Great customer service from all staff! There were very rude customers when we were there, yet they still delivered amazing service. We all loved the chicken and we will definitely come back :)

amazing breakfast at reasonable prices. it was quite busy when we went but food came out in less than 10 minutes. really enjoyed the chicken waffle. good food, great service from the staff.
Valley Wandstraat
Have been here a few times in the past year or so and the food has always been memorable, but not today. It was a busy Sunday so my son and I were told that it would be a half hour wait for his order: crispy chicken waffles served with an egg. I asked for his egg to be well done because he doesn't like runny yolk. Surely enough, around half an hour later, my son's meal arrived and he got stuck in cos he was starving .. a few bites later, he needed to go bathroom and complained about his food being dry and inedible in parts. I was too busy reading to notice that his food was in fact burnt and THEY STILL SERVED it like this. The waffles, if you could call them waffles were as flat as a crepe, burnt on both sides and smothered in maple syrup - probably so we wouldn't notice. The chicken was that dark colour when things you fry are left a minute too long and go a dark to burnt look and the egg .. well, these guys give new meaning to well done. I call the waitress to look at it and she apologises straight away and I ask her to show it to the chef (or the guy who looked like the chef and at the front of the pass). I see him dump it without looking at me and then appears what I'm assuming is the owner. I tell him what was wrong with it and he laughs as if to say it wasn't that bad. I tell him "if you don't believe me, go over there and ask your chef if I'm making it up". I dared him to ask the chef if the food was of quality and if so, I'd happily eat my words. What happened next however, confirmed my first suspicions - big lunch rush means more paying customers, but stuff the quality and let's push food out. Everyone around me, including their own wait staff can see the chef tell the guy that this was bound to happen and that he had told him so ... wow! As he walks back to me I tell him 'don't worry, I can' tell you everthing your chef said to you because I could see it from here. Yeah, we didn't pay for the shite meal and yeah I offered to pay for our drinks because those arrived within 10mins we arrived, but they wouldn't hear a bar of it, but I will NEVER be returning to this place again. Aah bless the wait staff cos that's about the only good thing I could say about this place. If this site allowed me to give it a -1 I would, but on reflection, the 1 is for the lovely waitress who listened. Looks like this place is off the list of places to visit. Check out other locals like Luscious, Brick by Brick and the Cozy Cafe in the same area.

corn fritters were disgusting. tasted like flour. the sauce on top was even worse. eggs were cold. disappointed won't go back. had to go buy me another breakfast elsewhere

Lovely ambience and great food! Prompt service with great attitude :) would def come back when back in onehunga. Highly recommended for casual breakfast or brunch.

My primary reason for going to Onehunga has always been for Dressmart, however, my recent dining experiences in Onehunga has made me consider adding an ancillary purpose to my usual Onehunaga visits. I’ve had this café on my list for quite a while having seen how busy this café whenever I drove by.

We ordered a variety of brunch options and I must say the presentation of meals at Onehunga Café was fantastic. I really can’t expound too much on the details of my brunch visit because I was rather hungover but I do vaguely remember that I loved the chicken & waffles and the cabinet blueberry muffin. Looking back at some of the pictures I took, the café layout was also quite spacious and had great lighting.

Showstopper: Ideal Brunch before a shopping spree at Dressmart

Overall Grade: A-

Have been before and they had good options on the previous menu for gluten-free/dairy free/vege folks and still had the old menu up on Zomato but sadly when we came today the menu has been updated and is no longer as friendly for dietary challenges folks. I couldn’t find anything on the menu I could eat apart from the broccoli share plate so ended up going somewhere else. I really like this place so hoping the next menu update will mean I can return.

Middle of the day on an average Friday and this place was packed! The coffee was strong and hot, just how I like it. I ordered the fish and chips. I'm gonna be honest, I was disappointed with the chips. I like thick cut fries and theirs were thin cut. They were a tad oily for my liking. My companion ordered the pork bao(?) and she said it was weird that these amazing Asian flavors, were served on white bread. However, she did enjoy it. If I was in the area again, I'd go back.

Every time I visit it's always a great environment, coupled with great service & just as importantly, genuinely delicious food!! Reasonably priced too...

Went here with a group of friends on a not-too-busy Saturday night. Food was pretty tasty (but not particularly memorable), portions were decent, and service was friendly and timely. Their menu is quite extensive and many of their dishes are designed to be shared tapas style. Quite a nice vibe to the restaurant with live music at night and even a play pen for kids to the side.

I had the Fish Po’ Boy. It was a bit hard to eat as the topping was constantly falling off the baguette, but overall I found the flavours to be light and fresh.

The 'tempura vegetables' are just battered + deep fried vegetables – which doesn’t sound very exciting but they were surprisingly nice. There was a mix of portobello mushroom, eggplant and zucchini in this dish.

The beef burger looked good, as did the fried chicken wings. I’d like to try one of their platters next time.

Amazing food and genuine friendly staff. I take all my family coming to visit. Would recommend to anyone and everyone. We feel like family every time we visit. Thank you

The crispy chicken waffle they are known for isnt that good. The fried chicken was particularly disappointing, overcooked and flavourless. The waffle had a good texture but a tad too sweet. Service was probably prompt. Overall a bit disppointing.

Went out to brunch for a girls days out, have been wanting to try this place for a while. Seems to always be busy.

Walked in, service was okay nothing to rave about, and the cafe looked busy (probably nothing out of the ordinary for a Saturday at 11.30am). This was the start of our disappointment.
Sat down and requested some still water as we were given sparkling, no biggie but this didn't arrive till we asked a different waitress.

We ordered, Granola ($13) with autumn fruits and yoghurt with a coffee and kumara hash with roasted carrots and poached eggs ($18.50, which was recommended).

The food arrived very quickly, almost so we thought they had got the wrong table.
The food looked lack-lustre (thats almost a compliment).

The Granola : WAS NOT GRANOLA instead we got something that looked like a Pams packet muesli (would have enjoyed this had I of bought it from the supermarket) topped with a small amount of yoghurt and 3 slices of pear and apple each which were not very generous. I can think of a number of seasonal fruit that would have been more exciting considering it is Spring (pineapple, grapes etc... ). Overall very underwhelming.

Kumara Hash : WAS NOT HASH, came out cold and was also a MASH. looked like i had been served a 2yr olds dinner. Granted the MASH was alright, despite being cold. The poached eggs were more boiled and lukewarm. Plus the roasted carrots were more boiled with the eggs, and looked rather insipid.

Everything had the potential to be a good meal, just needed to first be served warm and be seasonal, what is on the menu should be what is served.

Would not recommend would not go back.

Really nice ambiance / atmosphere blankets and even slippers are provided, a play pen for children which is awesome. Quite packed when we went but any table is good/good vibes! The service was quick we had our food soo quickly! The food was yum! Big brekkie and waffles at 2pm on a Sunday? Yes please! Very good service and coffee! If I'm out those ways again I know where to come!
Anna
Not very good food and seemed pricey for the quality & portion size. I gave politely constructive criticism of a part of our meal that was not very good this was met with a cold response at the counter. I'm not usually one to complain at the end of a meal...but part of it was pretty awful.

Everytime I come it's full and I know why!, the place is buzzing with life. Staff are friendly and helpful. A mix up with payments on my first visit but cashier handle the situation very well.

The staff here is very friendly and professional, and the place is well kept which gave the cafe a very comfortable feel.

We ordered the Crispy Chicken Burger and the Crispy Chicken Waffles. This was the first time I had ever tried chicken waffles - the first few bites were heavenly, but near the end the sweetness of the maple syrup with the chicken was a little sickening. Other than that, the dish was still delicious, as was the Burger which was excellent. We also ordered the chocolate thickshake which I highly recommend, as it was perfect to go with both dishes.

Ambience: 8/10
Food & Drinks: 7/10
Service: 7/10
Best eggs bene ive had! I informed them the eggs were slightly overcooked, just for feedback. I wasnt expecting anything but they came out with 2 perfectly poached eggs T-T which i was not expecting at all! Thank you.. 11/10 for great service! Plates are always looking pretty! Staff are friendly, i feel like they go the extra mile. Love it!

They have delicious coffee! Food is good. Enjoy their breakfast menu. We've had the chicken and waffles here. Once was fantastic the next time was a bit of a miss... guessing just a bad day as all other food was amazing.

Nice food, good coffee. Mildly expensives so that's where points came off. Lots of room as the cafe is in an old converted house. Nice place to go for brunch in the 'burbs!

I was quite excited to try this cafe and came out of the way to eat here. Boy was I disappointed with my visit after reading all the good reviews.

If there's one thing that gets a cafe a low rating it's lukewarm food on the verge of cold. I got the kumara rosti with two poached eggs which came out quickly. I was quite surprised as it was a busy Saturday lunchtime. Turns out it's because everything on the plate was pre-cooked instead of being made to order. Poached egg was cold so the runny egg yolk had already set, as seen in the photos. The rosti which I was expecting to be crispy and crunchy was sadly mushy and soft. The carrots on the side was a little undercooked in some of the bigger pieces and looked pretty sad. I tried a bit of the beef burger, a little chewy but hey at least it was hot.

Portion size is not bad for the price but not exactly redeeming when the above is considered.

Service was also a bit lukewarm. No one to greet you as you stand by the front door so we seated ourselves. Couldn't tell who worked there or not because no one wore anything to distinguish them from customers.

Food: 1/5
Service: 2/5
Instagrammability: 2/5

Ordered: eggs bene with bacon and potato spuds(extra $4) $18.5, americano $4 and vienna coffee $4.5

Service: service was so good. All the staff were working with a big smile and they served us promptly. Food came out in 10 minutes. I was so surprised that it came out so fast.

Food: I wanted to have some hash brown as well as eggs bene but they didn't have hash brown on the menu. The staff recommended me with potato spuds so I ordered spuds on side as well. As you can see in the picture, it was a huge portion. The biggest eggs bene I had in my life. It had heaps of bacon and heaps of spinach. Great flavour too although the hollandaise sauce needs a little more seasoning. Spuds were so good too. Crispy outside and so soft inside. I coudln't stop eating it even though my stomach was about to explode.

Coffee: I enjoyed both americano and vienna. The coffee tasted great. I ordered cold water added to my americano so I can drink it straight away and kindly staff brought me jugs of hot water and cold water so that I can add hot water if the coffee is too cold. So kind!

I will definitely come back again to try their iconic lunch menu too!

We had breakfast here. The "Big Grill" & "Eggs Benedict with smoked kahawai" The meal servings were huge & tasted delicious! Nothing to fault at all. Highly recommended. Cost wise $42 for two people.

Place is tidy and clean and spacious. Just bought a non alcoholic beverage. Was nice and cold. Free parking on the road.prices not the cheapest around

I've been here twice now, and my low rating is for the non-existant service and the dirty toilets.

On my first visit I went in to grab some lunch, wanting a hot sit-down meal. After standing around awkwardly waiting to be acknowledged (at least three staff members walked past without even glancing at me) I went and used the bathroom (dirty and smelly), made my way to the counter, grabbed a menu (again not even a "hi" or a smile) and ordered a takeaway coffee and a muffin to go.

I went again today and have just walked out after 20 minutes of not being acknowledged again. I went in, waited for someone to say hi... Ended up grabbing a menu and finding a table near the counter. Plenty of staff wandering around, and one brought me a glass of water but said nothing, and never came back to take my order. There were a few people at the next table along who had to flag a waiter down too.

If you don't provide table service, tell your patrons, don't just ignore them.

Used the facilities again today - the floor was greasy and slippery, there was rubbish everywhere, the toilet was partially blocked and they smelt disgusting. Right next to the kitchen too.

So disappointed, have heard great things about this place.
Shannon Boyce
The coffee is average but the bottomless coffee idea is genius. The calamari roll is beyond bad, spiced cold chewy squid on bread with a bit of mayo. The chips unfortunately aren't good too but at least the service was friendly but a good tip is to check and see how the customer likes the food.
Bruce Batters
This is by far the worst vegetarian burger I've ever had. Not to mention it's 17 dollars with no sides. It tastes like warm mash with a bit of lettuce. No flavour and not crispy. The aioli is also horrid and you get a triple serving of it.

Great place for food every time ! Fresh tasty food, great coffee. Highly recommended. Can get busy. Do not park across the road next to the bike shop, you'll get towed !

A great spot for catching up with friends! A group of us dined in for brunch and we were pleased with what Onehunga cafe had to offer. Even though they are constantly busy, there is plenty of seating both inside and out so you should be able to get a table without wait time.

We ordered the Crispy Chicken burger, Chocolate waffle and Eggs benedict with mushroom and halloumi. All the dishes were well presented but it was the burger that took the prize for food envy! Stacked high with a generous portion of chicken this burger did not disappoint - be sure to add cheese if your a Hawaiian fan. The waffle (yes, just one) was thick and smothered in Nutella, mascarpone and Oreo crumb. It was a little underwhelming with just one waffle but the dish was sweet without being too overpowering. The eggs bene wasn’t anything more than you’d expect but nothing to complain about either! The coffee so good that my partner even ordered another one to takeaway.

The service was well above average during our weekend visit with minimal wait times during rush hour. Our waiter was friendly and helpful when giving advice with the menu. Would definitely like to try more dishes here soon!

Always busy and for a good reason! Food and drinks are delicious and service is above average. A perfect brunch spot with friends. Food menu has an excellent range and all four of us were happy with the results.
Went here today after a long walk and was really looking forward to a decent meal. My husband had the chicken waffles and although they didn't look very good he really enjoyed them but I ordered the pork belly po boy which was very average!! It had two small slices of pork on top of lots of slaw and soggy bread! I was highly disappointed!
Esther
Busy cafe with lots of buzz and nice simple setting. The staff were helpful but seemed to be in a rush and showed the stress in the way they took the orders but I guess this was because of how busy it was?? The food was only slightly above average hence the 3.5 rating. Ordered house grill with extra side of scrambled eggs which were a little overcooked and tasted like they'd been sitting on the plate a while before coming out.
Also had the corn mussel fritters with bacon and eggs, the fritters were slightly undercooked hence had a soggy taste but chocolate waffle (yes 1 nice big waffle with Nutella, mascarpone and a few Oreo crumbs) was awesome. A little disappointed they don't offer flavoured syrups with the coffees but the coffees were still really nice anyway. Kids ordered mango coconut smoothies and they were really disappointed with it as it was quite bland, watery and lacked mango and for $7.50 each it definitely wasn't worth it. Our overall experience was ok but definitely the service and food reflected just how rushed/stressed the staff and possibly the chefs were. Would definitely try again and hopefully a more joyful and relaxed experience the next time.

While the service and ambience was nice, and the coffee ok, the food was a little lacking.
$19 fish and chips with crispy lettuce salad: salad was a small handful of salad greens from a $5 supermarket bag. Wilted and not dressed. Fish was cheap hoki and the beer batter was unseasoned and very bland. There were only 17 chips. $22 risotto: overlooked and seperate oil in sauce. Flavour ok but very overpriced for what it was. Wouldn't return because food is overpriced but cheap and poorly prepared ingredients.
Cookingkenny
Nice food, friendly service. A tad disappointed that the $15 salad was on the small side. Forgot to photo our food so I've included a picture of someone going overboard photographing theirs. What she had did look delicious, going to find out what it was for next visit.

Just returned to edit this up half a point because the barista actually knew what a ristretto coffee is
Tt_akl
This review is based on coffee. Ordered a soy latte, got more like a flat white??? ....watched him make it and he used 3 different bottles of soy milk that already kinda put me off.. and then one wasn't capped..... why tho.I mean. As a customer all I could think was, was that left opened since yesterday..or the day before???

Came here two days in a row. Food is fresh and delicious. Only downsides is the difficulty to find parking and also the plates, cutlery etc wasn't well presented. This doesn't bother me too much because food it most important for me in my reviews.

Coffee and tea is great. Benedict and breakfast is yummy. Salads are kept simple but interestingly tasteful.

Environment: 4/5
Presentation: 3/5
Food Quality: 5/5
Food Quantity: 5/5
Service: 4/5
Price: $20-$30pp

Will be back again :)

This is one of our favourite cafes and we love coming here. The menu is always tasty and varied, we love the fact that it incorporates a slightly southern flavour and offers more than the standard cafe menu.

The coffees never disappoint , the juices are freshly made and refreshing, we love the outdoor seating option and the staff have always been so friendly that you fee like locals whether you are or not! We have been wanting to come back for dinner and check out the live band. :)
OldGoatsKnowBest
No regrets dropping by. We were in the area so on the basis of previous reviews we called in. We would recommend a visit for those who want to gain a sense of the broad area; this cafe captures that essence. It certainly is popular. Coffee was okay but the choice of tea limited.
Tili Hunt
Terrible breakfast. Eggs Benedict disgusting. Mushroom are those massive ones but tast terrible. They used silverbeet in stead of spinach & it was definitely not fresh at all. Really disappointed as we were looking forward to our breakfast. Will not eat here again!!!!
Ann R
Local eatery for us. They have revamped their menu and seem to rotate over seasons which is great if you live in the area. Great spot for brunch. They have a live duo on Saturday afternoons and a bar stacked well. There's usually cabinet food and great coffee at the ready.
Sara Sergejew
Children's area, cabinet and menu, covered outdoor seating, baby-changing and clean bathrooms, friendly staff, quick and attentive service, beautiful, fresh food, lots of newspapers, large tables, good prices and alcohol. Drawbacks? Few- the parking is usually a nightmare, there isn't really a quite area and I wish they had a super healthy salad option for us trying to be less fatties. But it is right up there. I can't see how you couldn't love this place. Oh, and they sometimes have live music :)

As someone who works from home, it's nice to do some work outside of the house every now and then so I was relieved to finally find a cafe which suited my working needs 🤓. This dark and moody corner of Onehunga Mall is incredibly lively due to the various people passing through, it's a people watchers dream! The hustle and bustle of a medium sized town makes this cafe something else. While the menu is generic they know how to do it well that's for certain. The eggs are fluffy, the tea is hot and the coffee smells gooood 😍. I'm coming back to work here asap!

Came on a Sunday morning after a popular concert the previous night, and we had no idea what to expect. It was super busy so we were lucky to get a table, and were amazed by the food in the cabinet! Finally decided on some food and it didn't take long at all! Plus it was delicious. We also got snickers shakes and they were AMAZING. So happy we came here!!!
FJ
Great place. Good food , busy but a nice atmosphere. Have had breakfast and dinners here and good has always been good. Only downside is having coffee when eating in- even asking for a large only ever gets you a small glass... so do yourselves a favour and get it takeaway in the size coffee should be!!!

Came here for brunch on a busy Saturday morning. Service was quick but not very attentive. I ordered the smashed avo with haloumi, tomato and eggs and my partner had the waffles with fried chicken. The waffles were apparently tasty but my review is about how disappointing the avo dish was. There was one small piece of cold, tasteless haloumi. The tomato was a single cherry tomato cut in half. My major issue was with the avocado itself, which had not been "smashed", more like "destroyed in blender" so was more like runny guacamole. It had been overseasoned with lemon juice or something similar to the point where it did not taste like avocado at all and was unpleasant to eat.. The only saving grace to this meal was the perfectly poached egg, but I couldn't even eat that due to the ridiculous amount of raw cumin seeds on it. Would not return.
K
I ordered Beef bahn mi roti and peanutbutter thickshake. Personally the main dish for me was very oily and heavy but i enjoyed it none the less. The peanutbutter was awesome though! I'll come back for that.

Pro:
- Variety of unique dishes.
- Good wait staff and service.
- Excellent food.
- Visually tempting dishes.
- It's quiet atmosphere here.
- Conformable furniture inside and outside the cafe.

Cons:
- Ambience was quite dark ish due to little lighting.
- I don't know why but i saw a lot of customers grabbing menus by themselves. I had to ask for menu too.

Having been a long term resident of Onehunga, it's great to see cafes like these popping up here. Great service and good food. We've been here for breakfast and dinner and each time it was a pleasant experience. Staff are friendly, menu is plenty, great ambience and fantastic location. Buzzing local hub.

One of my favorite café and I go there for meeting and catch up with friends. I went there with my boyfriend for lunch 2weeks ago. we ordered waffles and macha latte. Café was packed, we were seated immediately. Great service, love the atmosphere definitely coming back soon!!
Claire
Stopped in for a takeaway coffee and had a lovely almond milk coffee made by the French barista. Busy place but all the staff were friendly and gave good service. Will definitely go back as the food looked great.

Went here for a weekend brunch but my experience wasn't as good as I expected based on other reviews.
Ordered the following dishes:
- Chicken waffles (their signature dish). The chicken was really good but the waffles were so mushy I couldn't even pick up a piece with my fork as it all fell apart, they weren't even a little bit crispy at all. The chicken size was too small compared to the waffles.
- Beef banh mi roti. This dish was okay, the slaw was bland but if you have it with the roti and beef it was good.
- House grill (big breakfast). We love our hash browns so were a little disappointed with the roasted spuds instead of hash browns. Bacon was crazy salty like inedible. The wrapped butter was cute though.
Also ordered the freshly squeezed juice (apple, pear, carrot, orange) which was nice and it came in a takeaway cup which was handy as i couldn't finish it and took it out with me. Dining companion did not like her coffee saying it was too bitter.
There are plenty of parking nearby but they're only for 30mins so depends if you want to risk it or park elsewhere further away.

Just a stones throw from Dressmart, this is the perfect spot for a post shopping feed.. or brunch any day of the week! Our pick? You have to try their waffles! Their crispy chicken, chilli maple syrup and waffle combo is just amazinggg! This is also a pretty sweet place for an evening hangout too.. go for one of their Po Boys and Beer 👌🏻

Busy cafe located on one of the roundabouts in Onehunga. Having said that though there is heaps of seating & the service on this visit was efficient.
They have a range of cabinet food as well as a full menu with lots of unique options. There is a Asian fusion feel with many of the dishes as well as standard options.
I tried the cauliflower & chive Hash which was a well balanced & flavour full dish. Bacon on the side. Coffee was well made.
Keen to try some of the other Asian dishes next time as I got food envy looking at some of the other tables.
Vivek
Cafe is nice and stands right at the corner of mall road so you can enter straight after your shopping :)
We normally drop here for breakfast or quick coffee and every time its a different experience here. Coffee, shakes ,smoothies and breads are all well prepared.

I came here a couple weeks ago and ordered the chipotle calamari roll. I enjoyed it very much and so did my friend who ordered the eggs benedict. The food is cooked to perfection and the customer service is by far one of the best. The place is massive and has plenty of space and seats. Overall I really enjoyed this cafe and would 100% come here again!

I visited here a couple of Saturdays ago. It's got a great ambiance, interesting menu and good food. My latte was perfect and I had the crushed avocado with poached egg and haloumi cheese which was very good. Staff were upbeat, friendly and efficient.

"What's worse than seeing a cockroach in the burger you are eating? - Half the cockroach in it" - a quiz I enjoyed so much. At Onehunga Cafe - NO COCKROACHES - food came in metal dishes with paper beneath the food. I've the funny feeling that paper might rip if it became soggy when cut & part of it ended up in my belly; fortunately that didn't happen. We had sticky pork belly Po'boy with palm sugar & green apple slaw; beef brisket & carrot slaw. Beef brisket wasn't up to my taste. Mango smoothie was good; coffee was not hot. (Food - 3/5; Service - 3.5/5; Ambience - 2.5/5)

N.B. Menu at Zomato & its website hasn't been updated.

A very unexpected find in the centre of Onehunga! The place was lively, the food/menu were on point, the staff were friendly and helpful and the seating was plentiful.
Went for brunch. Everything was priced pretty reasonable as compared to other places we've been.
Had a look at the dinner menu and will definitely be going back for that.

Only downsides were that the tables were all messy and because they werent cleaned fast enough people were waiting around. Happens in hospo though.

Fried Chicken Waffles - Seriously worth the talk! Could have done with the egg being cooked a little longer and a little more maple syrup...but if youre keen to share a few dishes at the table make sure this is one of them!
Beef Banh mi Roti - Loads of really tasty pulled beef, sizeable portion, comes with a good amount of dressing, very juicy.
Fish po' boy - Fish was extremely fresh and went really well with the avocado and salsa style flavours in the meal.
Chicken burger - their fried chicken is the best! goes super well with the crispy lettuce and brioche bun!
Drinks are also on point!
Snickers thickshake **** Mango coconut smoothie **** Chocolate shake ** Spicy chai latte ****

Came to around 25pp with a meal and a drink, would recommend.

This place seems to be the liveliest and busiest cafe on the Onehunga Mall strip (which is always a good sign). Which is why we decided to pop in here for brekkie one day. I like that they have spacious indoor and outdoor seating and the service is prompt.

We ordered the house grill and the crispy chicken waffle along with some coffee. Firstly, the coffee was excellent. The chicken waffle was just divine. It was just the right balance of sweet and savory. The chicken was perfectly crunchy and the waffle was just soft enough to mop up the egg and maple syrup. Do not miss out on ordering it! The house grill is a really filling plate of food that checks all your breakfast staples.

I'd definitely come back here if I am in and around Onehunga.

Breakfast for two -$50

I went to Onehunga Cafe this past Sunday around noon and I was a bit disappointed with not only the food but also the service. This is my second time dining here and the first time was pretty good. I ordered the prawn po boy sandwich, and it was pretty delish. I definitely recommend! This time around, however, I wanted to try their take on US southern classic, chicken and waffles. To say the least, the dish was not even close to being worth $17. The waffles were good but they were plain, I also would have preferred the syrup on the side since they soaked the center and I wasn't able to evenly distribute the syrup on the rest of the waffle pieces or even the chicken. Oh the chicken... Oh man the chicken was terrible. Not only was it a piece of dark meat chicken (one of the worst pieces to use for this or any type of dish to be honest), but it was small, burnt, and terribly dry. I know that being from the south in the states, I'm a bit spoiled when it comes to fried chicken, but when paying this much for chicken in an actual restaurant, I don't expect to be getting a small and dry piece of dark meat. I do not recommend this dish at all. It doesn't represent the US classic well.

On top of the food issue, I was never actually served. A waiter told me to have a seat and then he went on serving people I saw walk in way after me. I had to go up and place my order at the front since I had been forgotten. Not the best customer service in that regards.
I_like_pickles
The shakes are the best thing on the menu.
Particularly the peanut butter shake. I've tried the other flavours on the menu but the peanut butter shake is definitely the winner.

Food here isn't anything spectacular. A tad overpriced for what it is. Portions are small and they fill the plates up with a lot of salad. I would suggest having the shakes here on a hot day sitting in the outdoor area.

The only down side to the outdoor area is that it's not very private as its situated near a busy road by a roundabout. They've done a good job at making the outdoor space more private by adding greenery as shutters, to separate the walking space for the public, and the restaurant eating space.

Great atmosphere, good service and location however the food was a slight let down, well what we ordered anyway. I ordered the salted caramel waffle and my partner ordered the chicken and waffles. I thought mine was ok, waffles were good but in all honesty it was just topped with some sauce, apple and walnut pieces and a bit of mascarpone, nothing special to it, I could've made it myself but in the end it still tasted nice.

The disappointing bit was the chicken and waffles.. everyone usually gets excited when they see chicken and waffles on the menu and we weren't any different so we couldn't help but get both types of waffles. Unfortunately it was a big let down.. The presentation wasn't the greatest, literally just 2 pieces of deep fried chicken on 2 pieces of waffles.. no colour to it, a bit of greens on the side would've gone well to help with the presentation and also to balance out the heaviness of the dish. The waffles were just soaked in the chili maple which was amazing for the first 2 or 3 bites but after that it just got sickening. Maybe they should put the maple sauce on the side and the customer can add it to the waffles themselves. The pieces of chicken were just too dense, maybe some chicken strips or tenders would be better as it is a bit lighter. My partner just finished 1 waffle and he usually eats a lot but because it was so soaked in the maple it just got too much. The funny thing was the chili maple was a lot sweeter than my salted caramel waffles.
Maybe we should've gone with the cornbeef hash instead of the chicken waffles.

I would definitely like to come back to this cafe and give them another shot but I definitely won't be ordering their waffles. Hopefully they can improve on them after rereading this 😊
Offers great selection of food with fresh ingredients, awesome coffee and atmosphere day or night. Saturday night vibe with live music always inviting. Oh and the service is exceptional.

Visited this cafe as a friend has suggested it. The ambiance was okay..

The food was good with a very reasonable price range.
And friendly staff.

Went for the first time today. I was really satisfied with everything. Even tho it was crowded, the service was fast and good then they are very generous on the amount of food that they serve. I ordered " house grill "

Wow - what a find. Driven past it a million times. Had no idea it was so good. Stopped in for solo lunch as I was nearby. Ordered Asian calamari salad and flat white. Food was just delicious. Best salad I've had in ages. Fresh and full of flavour and really big portion. Coffee was excellent. I'll definitely be back.

Went for the first time today and found it to be very pleasant. Spacious cafe with plenty of natural light and friendly atmosphere😀
Nice cabinet food and great brunch menu options available.🍽 Prices on par with other Auckland cafes.
I had the chicken livers with hash- nice flavours.
My partner had Kahawai Benedict with side of bacon.
Eggs poached perfectly however hollandaise sauce lacked flavour.
Service though was very attentive and friendly- from the start to finish-Good job Onehunga Cafe👍🏽
We would dine here again if in the area👌🏽
Lipstick on the water glasses, table was next to a toilet so could hear flushing while eating. Ordered the halloumi cheese on toast with avocado, the toast was cold, there was no halloumi instead there was another cheese. We called the waiter over, who said they ran out of halloumi... I didn't eat the meal and it was agreed that I wasn't to pay for it, however with a sour face and no apology given. Good music and volume, love the 6 barrel soda range, welcoming on entrance.

It was my first time here and I loved it. From the minute you walk in you are greeting with the mouth-watering smell of fried chicken infused with sweet baked goods and coffee. Came here for the lunch with a friend and I got the beef Roti which was absolutely divine. The meat was tender and full of flavour, the Roti had a nice texture and tasted slightly sweet which was nice. Staff were warm, friendly and attentive with smiles all round. Great food, great service, would definitely be back for brunch again!

Great atmosphere, great staff and a great looking place..! We came here wanting to try the chicken waffles so we were very excited but unfortunately that excitement disappeared when we tried the fried chicken. It was hard as!!!! This could be explained from the use of chicken breast..

We decided to visit this cafe today as we were in the neighbourhood. As we walked in, I could smell delicious food which made me rather inquisitive about the menu. We didn't have much time, so we ordered coffee and a cheese and ham sandwich to share. My mocha was quite good and his long black was also good. The cheese sandwich was also good - tasty. But it was dripping with oil... Lastly, the environment was very pleasant and the look was quite rustic. I'm definitely going to come back to try the chicken waffles!

Have been wanting to try this cafe after reading the reviews. What a disappointment! The cafe was packed and it seemed very disorganized, we had to find an empty table but all the dirty cups and plates were still on it. We had to ask the staff to clear the table for us. No one bothered to bring us a menu so it was all self service pretty much. I ordered the fried chicken burger with cheese. I was expecting a good burger with melted cheese, veges and good relish. However, what i got was cold, dry bun and one piece of cheese thrown on the side. I ate it because i didn't want the food to go to the waste. Not worth ot really. Lucky thay we had a voucher to use. Will not go back again.

Skeptical before going because the reviews aren't that great but was pleasantly surprised ☺
The chicken waffles is pretty comparable to the Orleans one. It would be nice if they gave more chicken to go with the huge waffle but other than that the waffle itself was soft with a slight crisp and there was enough syrup to soak the waffle (Orleans lack the syrup). The chicken was really crispy in my opinion but some people might find it to be too "hard".

The portion size is quite big so that's always a bonus.

Oh, and the peanut butter thickshake was super yummy! I would recommend sharing with a friend like I did because having either one of these on my own would've been too much 😁

The environment could've been cleaner though - didn't like those tiny bugs flying around 😏

STICKY PORK BELLY PO' BOY mmm yes it was all of our fave.. the name and description says it all. Obviously its going to be on the sweet side ('sticky') and it will caramelise which is how it should be with the palm sugar and marmalade... the coffee was on point, hard to find both, but we are all glad we dont have to travel far for great food and damn good coffee and service. SEE YOU NEXT WEEK! and the week after👍
Kat
Thought we would give this place a try as the reviews seemed good and it looked fun from the outside. Unfortunately we were disappointed, the service was ok, the coffee was less than average in taste (ups for the latte art though!) and the food was the worst. We ordered the pork belly Po boy and the beef Bahn mi. The pork belly was caramelised sickly sweet and over powered everything else on the plate that you couldn't taste any other flavours. I ate about 3 little pieces and then felt sick. The Bahn mi had no flavour at all, Vietnamese style food is supposed to be fresh with amazing flavours, this was neither. Pretty much this place even though it looked cool and the food and coffee was presented beautifully it was overall a massive let down.

Had brunch here today with a friend. Ordered eggs benedict with kahawai since they were out of salmon and my friend ordered the crispy chicken burger, with coffees. The coffees were strong which I liked but the food was not up to par considering I've been told what amazing food they have. My poached eggs was overcooked so the yolk didn't ooze out and kahawai was served cold. Some positives was the good atmosphere, friendly staff and a kids play area.

Best place in its area by far!! Amazing food - great live music. Must try: cherry bourbon hot chocolate. The food was better than a helicopter ride and I'll be back. #happywifehappylife

Thank you Onehunga cafe, the food tonight was superb! Your Chefs, a well deserved pat on the back! The food was made with respect.. good customer service also, and an inviting atmosphere. We will be back.

Visited there the first time at around December of year 2014. Ordered one fish and chips and green salad. To be honest, both two dishes were not tasty. Will visit there again and update my review if there is anything improved or worse.

Popped in for brunch with hubby and 3month old bub.. very kid friendly and staff were lovely. Had waffles and to astir, both delicious and decent coffee. Will return with coffee group and will bear in mind for when kids are older as there is a nice little play area!

We've been seeing this cafe and have always wanted to try it since we moved in Onehunga so my husband and I went there on a Saturday to have brunch.

The interior is nice and cozy. Although there's plenty of tables and some booths inside (and some tables outside), the place gets packed especially during brunch / lunch time.

We ordered Eggs Benedict w/ bacon and their House Grill. The Eggs Benedict was divine! The presentation was lovely, the egg was nicely poached and the Hollandaise was also good. The House Grill is a good choice if you are wanting a big breakfast. Everything in the plate was good especially the grilled tomatoes and poached eggs.

Will definitely be back again.

Onehunga cafe never fails to impress. The food is always great at really reasonable prices and coffee is even better. I also love the smoothies they do, I try not to down mine too fast because they are so addictive.
Would recommend to everyone as a must try place :)

Came here on the way to a play. The menu is very simple and has a clear range of what they offer. Each dish looked like a surprise as there wasn't many details of what it was.

I went with the lemon and coconut fish. It was light and fresh. Had a good serving of fish fillets with bed of lettuce and salsa on top. The coconut cream sauces was nice and didn't over power the dish

Really enjoyed the meal and are interested in returning with friends

Didnt think the food and service was up to scratch, heard all the fuss about this cafe, and decided to try it. Food came out quite cold, (warm) and it was pretty average. Nothing to rave about. It took us quite awhile to get the attention of the wait staff. While we saw a couple of them wondering around and talking with each other.
Unsure if i will go back.
Natasha
Had lunch here on a Sunday afternoon, was pretty busy.
Was a bit confusing because wait staff were taking orders and people were ordering at the register and it took a while to find a menu.
Ordered waffles with fried chicken, egg and chilli maple syrup, crispy chicken burger and chocolate and snickers shakes.
Food and shakes were good but after a while the fried egg and syrup don't taste good together in my opinion.
Would love to come back here and try other dishes though.
Three of us tried Onehunga Cafe for the first time. The customer service was great. The waiter were friendly and attentive. The Sticky Pork Belly Po'Boy were good according to my friend, but the Garlic Ginger Prawn was just okay. I had vege burger which was good.

Overall, we really enjoyed the dining experience at this place.

Customer Service: 8/10

Food: 7/10

Atmosphere: 7/10

Date: April 2016

I love this place! Delicious coffee, good vibe and good food. Breakfast menu is a winner.

The lunch menu has been hit and miss for me however. Wouldn't recommend the crispy prawn Po boy. Would recommend the waffles, eggs benedict and beef brisket burger, mmm.

Awesome to see these types of Cafes popping up in places like little old onehunga. Can't wait to see more!

Yum!!! What a local treat. Supreme coffee 👍🏻 bottomless coffee ahh amaze. And the food we had the fish cake Benedict and the avo and egg, portions where huge for my little tummy but yummy. We will be back I promise

It was a surprise to find a cafe like this in Onehunga. As the interior gave me a very "Ponsonby feel". Loved their chicken burger. The chicken was so crispy but not too hard. Unlike some places where the chicken was fried wayyy too hard and it actualy hurts your mouth when you eat. The pineapple and aioli sauce makes the cumin in the chicken not too over-whelming.

Great casual neighbourhood eatery with super friendly service.
The menu has something for everyone. The avocado chips are amazing, so is the grilled hoisin chicken. Burgers come on delicious brioche buns. You'll find Hallertau on tap.
We went here for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. After driving past the cafe regularly and it always being busy I had to try it for myself.
The service was OK there's definite room for improvement.
The food was a disappointment. Me and a friend shared the smoked fish hash which was quite tasty but you couldn't taste any fish. We also had the haloumi and Beetroot salad which was so bland, it had hardly any haloumi and some big tinned sliced Beetroot.

Surprising place in Onehunga. Was looking for a quick lunch and just dropped by.

The staff was very attentive and kind. Tried some pork belly with a sweet sauce that was delicious, way better than you'll have in good Asian restaurants.

On that day they also had a Brazilian coffee blend. Impressionably good and honoured the fame of the country for good beverage.

O hail the hero of Onehunga! This place is setting the mark for cafes in this area. Nice trendy setting in a relaxed and casual atmosphere; the latter maybe a bit too casual?

We had the kahawai and humara hash with poached eggs - these were pretty good! i do love me some fish cakes but felt maybe this time the chef was a little stingy on the fish and bit too heavy on the kumara - a balance is needed imo.

The staff are friendly and our waitress was lovely. I do however feel like this place is run by a bunch of young ones and it kinda feels that way. It's missing a tiny bit of professional service if you know what I mean?? for example, one of the waiters walked passed us and decided to pick up rubbish on the floor with his hands! 😱 Showing cleanliness is great.. but never with your bare hands in front of eating customers.

But overall, would i come back? of course! the rest of the menu looks great and the coffee was good.

I have previously been here and thought it was wonderful, so keen to take my husband, we dropped in for brunch.
The service was a little slack this morning, however they were reasonably busy so no major and we found our self a table and checked out the menu.
Our meals came quickly after ordering and were presented well and tasted delicious. I had good old faithful Bacon and Eggs Benedict and my husband had smoked Kahawhai and Kumera hash with poached egg. Both good size portions and we left feeling very satisfied.
Shame the service let them down today, however won't stop me going back as I think it's a great little social spot!

Love this place. Good food, good vibe and the team are awesome! The burger is the best we have ever had. This is the first time we have ever been and we will definitely be back! Thank you so much for looking after us so well. Much appreciated 😍

Such a relaxing vibe and a really nice breezy location. Staff are very friendly and attentive. Price is reasonable and an amazing portion of food that tastes absolutely divine. Been here so many times! Recommended if you're wanting to go out for brunch with friends or family :)

Great food. Very popular in the Onehunga community. Been here three time and noticed the first time I visited that the toys my daughter played with we're filthy and so were the floors. Today I went for a coffee as I do like the feel of the cafe, but the uncleanliness of this restaurant is even more obvious this time. The jug where the cutlery is held in is so filthy and I took a pic of it. It's the same seat I've sat in the first time I've visited with the same dirt on the same (looking) jug....I'm not a neat freak, but cleanliness must accompany the same level of food standard. The two go together.

Again, good food, great vibe, not clean....

Insta-worthy plating but that is it.

Staff were friendly but service was a little too casual and borderline unprofessional. Took about 15 minutes for the menu to arrive, which was acceptable because they were very busy. Then, noone took our order for about 15 minutes. Then the coffee came about 15 minutes later. The food took the longest, about another 30 minutes or so. Which I endured because the chicken waffle sounded very heavenly.

Sadly enough, the chicken was more hard than crispy up until a point where it was actually painful to bite into. Once I successfully tackled it the chicken was so bland and dry. The waffles tasted so so SO sweet and was also dry and hard that I couldn't even finish one piece. The sauce was quite yummy. The serving portion was weird, they give two little pieces of chicken with two giant pieces of waffle.

The coffee was decent.

The floors were very greasy/slippery and the tables were abit on the dirtier side. Not sure if it was just because they were understaffed on a busy day or whether they are generally like this.

So much room for improvement, they can do so much better and become "the" cafe in Onehunga. Definitely not there yet and I wouldn't be revisiting anytime soon.

This cafe looked intriguing and the staff were very welcoming and attentive. Coffee was fair to middling. I am reliably informed by my two children that the hot chocolate is very good. Only had biscuits and they were a bit on the stodgy side. The menu looked limited and would try elsewhere if wanting a full meal.

Came here for brunch on a wet morning. I ordered the smashed avocado and he ordered the scrambled eggs. Small little mix up from the staff as we had asked to swap the tomatoes for bacon and they didn't. However they quickly rectified their mistake and he got the bacon we asked for. Food was solid, however the ratio of bread to eggs/avocado was a little off. We were both left with eggs/avocado with nothing to put it on.

Friendly service and good outside setting. Very dog friendly and we met about three dogs and their owners. I would have liked to have tried the breakfast menu. Coffee tastes great.

Great cafe and beautiful food! Came with my daughter before we hit the shops at Dressmart, friendly service, the food was delicious, very fresh and tasty, I had the fish Poy and my daughter had the pork belly with both dishes sitting on 2 bits of toasted French sticks, probably only need one French stick as the meal was so filling.
Will definitely be back!
Nicely fitted out place. Mostly pleasant staff, but then everyone has off days. I like their coffee, and the water that they fix on the premises. I am always disappointed by the menu. There is nothing wrong with the food on offer, and the meals that I have had there have been OK, but there just seems to be something missing, something variety wise maybe? Keeping regular hours and opening times would be good, i.e over summer.

It is good having a place like this in Onehunga. And I wish them well.
Debin Sabu
Just been there once. First impression busy cafe. Busy cafes are usually good. I had a chicken and a salad dish which was good. The staff were warm and friendly. I definitely need to go back again. Overheard a customer telling the staff that lunch was really good and would definitely go back for dinner. I am really curious to try this place again. My friends had a coffee and some muffin. They liked it. They also have cool beers and alcohol. Definitely worth it on a warm day
Realistic Reviews
Onehunga Cafe is located at a busy intersection in the heart of Onehunga.
It's decor is minimalist & modern with a semi retro twist. Dining here is hit and miss.

Service: 7/10
- A noticeable attempt is made to attend to all guests at arrival, though this sometimes falls short. Table service follows a similar pattern, where even moderately busy periods requires ordering at the counter.

Food: 5/10
- Very small, though interesting menu.
Extremely overpriced for portion size, quality and meal types. Have before found bones in fish (Benedict). Can only speak for brunch menu.

Coffee: 4/10
-Serves Supreme. Generally mid to high end. Depending on barista, coffee can either be reasonable, or undrinkable (over/under extracted, milk burnt etc.)

Final comment: 16/30
- Through its pricing and perceived ambiance Onehunga Cafe sets an expectation it does not meet. Can only speak for brunch menu.

A modern little cafe with a great menu!

I was very excited by the American themed menu, especially the chicken waffles, so I had to get those. Our food arrived very quickly and with very friendly staff.
I was very impressed by the portion sizes when they arrived, definitely worth the value for money.

The flavors of the chicken and waffles were very good, I liked the spice that was in the syrup (?) or just sprinkled on top. I just wish the waffles were a little crispier and the syrup was on the side for you to pour on your own, as my waffles were drowning in syrup and by the end had soaked it all up and were all squishy and too sweet to eat.
My friend's prawn Po Boy was very tasty, the prawns were cooked beautifully and complimented by the fresh wasabi aoili!

Would return for sure!

This place is so so good. It has heaps of seatings, the service was amazing - on point, superfriendly and funny. Food was just too perfect.
My bf got the fish po boy with a side of fries and i ordered the chilli eggs and an ice coffee. The ice coffee was pretty goood. They add two little scoop of ice cream when you order ice coffee, yum! Chilli eggs was so yummy. The eghs were fluffy and spicy, and it has generous amount of chorizo. Simple but amazing. Im not a fan of fish and i tried a little of my bf's dish. Surprisingly i liked it. Well i loved it, it was so so good, fish was still juicy and the seasonings was perfect!
Defitnately come back for more next time.

Lovely place to enjoy lunch and dinner. I highly recommend Onehunga Cafe. Always a busy popular place to meet. The staff are very friendly and efficient - even when its busy. The meals are amazing. - Have not been dissapointed. I also love the gourmet food in the cabinet. They do amazing coffee and Chai Late.

Ordered the House Grill with a side dish of Kahawai smoked. Really delicious. Service was good although twice we had coffee brought to our table that we did not order. My companion enjoyed her eggs benedict with bacon.

I love a good breakfast before starting work. Good thing, dress smart is right next to Onehunga Cafe. This morning I ordered Chicken waffles. I always order Chicken waffles when I go to Orleans, so I wanted to try Onehunga Cafe's version. The waffles are very big and very tasty, the chicken is cooked really well with a bit of a spice and I like how they added a sunny side up egg to it. I'm very impressed with this 👌🏼

With a tagline like Morning, Noon, and Night, it's obvious when you can get fed from here. Admittedly I thought their tagline was actually the restaurant name! I was sceptical about this place when it first opened but it just got more and more popular. This eatery is truly fantastic and probably the best option in Onehunga and I can't wait to find another opportunity to go again.

The inside is simplistic and bright due to the length of windows facing the open street. You can have a seat inside and get cosy with the hustle and bustle or you can pick a seat outside and enjoy the sun. For parents with young children, this is surely a great cafe to take them to. You can enjoy your meal while your kids play in their play pen.

Service was brilliant and their staff were attentive and friendly as well as patient. I've had a few of their breakfast options and the most recent ones are:

Waffles with coconut ice cream and chocolate sauce and strawberries. I think this was actually too sweet for my liking. The waffles themselves were sweet but since it was topped with ice cream and chocolate sauce, it ended up a bit too much. However for those with a sweet tooth, this is truly a dream. However I'm pretty sure the ice cream was vanilla and not coconut.

Crushed avocado - crushed avocado with some greens and tomato and a poached egg on top of grains toast with a slice of halloumi. The crushed avocado was very tasty and the greens were fresh and the whole dish was truly brought together by the crushed avocado. Beautifully made.

Granola - came with fresh strawberry and pear slices and yoghurt and honey. Truly impressed by this establishment's use of fresh products. A+!

I always order the pomegranate oolong tea if that is available as that's my favourite drink but I've had their smoothies before. I don't really like their smoothies as I feel it's not their best.

Definitely recommend coming here!

DId not expect this one coming out of Onehunga but what a gem of a place. I've been here twice now as my sister lives across the road. More recently my father was in town and before he left we walked over the road to brunch it!

Staff were friendly, talkative with loads of personality. We sat outside where you can find dog friendly seating on the street. The meals came to us quickly. My father had poached eggs on toast with a side of tomatoes, the food was amazingly presented even for something so simple. I had the fried chicken waffles with maple which was an absolute taste sensation! I was a tad hungover so also had a Vanilla shake with breaky which was a little on the thin side but still went down a dream.

I'll be back to Onehunga Cafe many times as it has never failed to please. A cafe that doesn't try too hard, they serve simple food but do it extremely well!

It staggers me this cafe gets such good reviews. It's like the chefs scours Pinterest looking for what's trending without understanding how flavours work. Nearly all meals I've tried (only six or so to be fair) lack something, like they're missing an ingredient.

The brisket burger and agria fries are damn good but I've also had cold eggs and dry salads too. Talking of salads, they used to have a reasonable choice on rotation at the counter but not so much now.

The staff are the reason to come back, very friendly and accommodating (although I still never know whether to stand at the door, sit down or place an order at the counter, it's just awkward).

I'm willing to believe I'm in the minority because the Onehunga Cafe is always busy (hell it's on the Metro top 50) and Onehunga needs a quality cafe. I'm yet to be won over though.

Came here as it was one of the few cafes in Onehunga that was open on a Sunday morning, we were greeted right away considering how busy the cafe was.
The waitress took the order, I got the full grill no mushrooms with a six barrel soda and partner got the apple crumble topped waffles with a mocha.
Meals arrived 10-15 minutes later, full grill minus mushrooms as per my request; seeded bread, tomatoes and egg were the best parts-sausages were a tad dry and would've been nice if bacon was crispy. Partner enjoyed the waffles, devouring most of the meal.

Would we come back? Yep

An outstanding find! Spacious, modern and unpretentious. Seriously a gem! We had brunch here today and wow, it was unexpectedly amazing.

The cafe itself is simplistic and rustic and there's plenty of seating indoor and out. You'll be greeted with smiles by one of the many staff members which is a brilliant start. Menu's and cutlery is promptly delivered as is the sparkling water. Nice touch. I also love that they serve more than the usual cafe options - cool options on offer.

We had the crispy chicken waffles, the sticky pork belly and the hand cut agria potato chips. Generous portions and definitely reasonably priced. All in all a great meal. :-)

Came in for a quick cup of Supreme but ended up giving in and ordering the fried prawn poboy. Regrets? None. It was tantalising. Will definitely be back to try the other po'boys

Good coffee (Supreme) and reasonable food!
Unique breakfast menu as they offer southern food, like chicken waffle and po boys for lunch. Had the chicken waffle which was delicious however I think they should separate the maple sauce so that we can adjust to taste. Friend had the fried shrimp with wasabi mayo and was good too!

They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner! A nice addition to Onehunga as it is quite modern and fits in with the whole cafe trend. Good to have a coffee then head over to dress smart as it is so near to each other.

Nice big space, lots of seating. Service is friendly but a bit slow. Couldn't tell if it was table service or order up front..so we lined up to order. Would be good if they have front of house stuff guiding people in as there are so many seats!

I had the big breakfast which was indeed large. Disappointed with only two cherry tomatoes but not everyone loves them as much as me. Great service and relaxed atmosphere. Will definitely be returning to this place!

The pork belly entree was delicious, best pork belly I've tried. The decor is quite simple, but effective. Interesting how they transition from breakfast to dinner. The dish was tuna Niçoise salad which was lovely. Great pricing for what you get

I really like the Po boys!! Shrimp with wasabi Mayo- so yummy! And the pulled pork one was really good too.
The agria potato chunky fries are great- handmade and super fresh and they come with a homemade aioli
The coffee was good too and the offer sparkling or still water
Service was great and it's dog friendly if you sit outside

This place has fab service and fab coffee!!!

Our waitress was very attentive and very helpful, and I enjoyed the zing of the complimentary sparkling water as we sat down. The chips are great, but I didn't enjoy the chicken burger so much. I guess I was expecting a little more salad with it. After a while, the chips, aioli, brioche bun, deepfried chicken, and chipotle aioli got a little too heavy. The brioche was a little on the dry/stale side which didn't help... :/

My mate ordered the Pork Poh boy, which has more colour and salads which I was secretly coveting the entire time. Mmmmm salad...

My recommendation for dining at Onehunga Cafe is to mix up the deep fried goodness with some freshness when you order.

Even though I didn't leave on a high, I would definitely give this place another whirl. Their brilliant service, and awesome coffee entitles them to at least that! Keep up the good work guys!
Came to check this place out after hearing about the Barista from the latest atomic latte art throwdown! This place did not dissapoint! Friendly as staff, almost ticks all the boxes! Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner - with a kids corner too! (Not that I have a kid) just think more places should have a kids corner! Also enjoy their community seats! An awesome place, will be back for sure!

I haven't been to this shop since it was a video store years ago lol. I've always passed by and thought how poncy it looked. Went in yesterday with a friend for breakfast it was full which is always a good sign. At first glance at menu its a bit expensive but once our House grill arrived with a side of Agria hand cut chips with aioli I could see why the steep prices. The food was good and serving was substantial (my friend couldn't finish her plate). The agria chips were as yummy as the aioli. The hot chocolate was luke warm which I wasnt too pleased with as I like my hot drinks HOT lol. All in all it was a nice breakfast.

Well serviced! Highly recommended! Good place to enjoy coffee and breakfast.. Food is little bit expensive but worth it for the service and food.. Nice ambience as well.

After a minor slip up with a staff member taking my booking on a day they don't accept bookings, the manager and her team were very apologetic and accommodating to fit us in. Service was outstanding and food is fresh and perfectly cooked.

Coffee is very good.

This Cafe is practically next to Onehunga Dressmart and well worth a visit if your visiting Dressmart. I received very friendly service, and I was very happy with my Fried Prawn Po Boy along with fries and a hot choc; and my friends Roasted Beetroot dish looked impressive also. The waiter had a great memory and took our order without writing it down - apparently he took a coffee order for a group the other day, and memorised it all- a real skill. All in all a really nice friendly relaxed environment, and I will def be back to try another dish, and one of their beautiful sweet treats-the cheesecake looks devine!

The service was good, the chips were good, but everything else was a disappointment. The food lacked flavour, our fried chicken was very bland and chewy, and the sauces were tasteless. The tomato sauce also had a suspicious amount of curry flavouring. The waiter had quite an attitude when we brought up our disappointment in the meal, but at least we got some free mints...

Onehunga Cafe is the latest gem that gives a breath of fresh air to this forgotten area. I walk past this cafe on my way to work but never had the chance to venture inside for lunch until last week. It's pixelated array of colours make it very eye catching, and their casual and rustic eatery vibe is the perfect way to ease into this neighbourhood without sticking out like an outcast.

To drink, I was intrigued by the range of Six Barrel Soda Co drinks, and at the recommendation of the staff, I settled for the Celery Tonic despite my doubts about it (my first choice, ginger was sold out). It was delicious!! Light and refreshing, it was a taste that everyone would easily love.

To eat, I chose the Eggplant Kasundi which was so so moreish and hearty despite being a vegetarian dish with a slight pickled flavour that really wowed the palate. It would be nice if they could cut down the amounts of oil though- whilst the bread underneath soaked it up nicely, the dish left me feeling slightly uncomfortable about all the cholesterol I had just ingested..

My dining companion ordered the Pulled pork burger which came topped with an extremely generous amount of pulled pork. The bun was brioche which was quite buttery and fluffy- it turned the burger into the ultimate indulgence. The photos make the food portions look smaller than they are but believe me, they were quite generous and filling! I have been despairing over the smaller portion sizes of the latest eateries these days, and Onehunga Cafe has restored my faith.

The first time I came, I had a Mixed Berry smoothie to take away, which I didn't find worth for its price, but I have heard so many raves about their house shakes from my sister and co workers. The food here is amazing and the staff are friendly, definitely give it a try if you're in the area!

Sarah Reynolds #challenge

Been here a few times since it opened ... Very trendy inside... Nice to see the menu changed after summer season. The food is usually nice and abit different from the usual cafe style with the kitchen not closing after 2! Nice to have more menu choice than cabinet food. The chips are yum. The staff are friendly.. Sometimes it seems there is staff everywhere yet we are waiting to order.... Definitely one to try if you are in the area.

Came here after getting recommended from my boss and I wanted to head back right away! Service was great, coffee was awesome, and the Chicken and Waffles were bad ass! Only issue I could find was the place was quite cold as the doors were open but otherwise this places rocks! Keep up the great work!

Came for a quick bite to eat, Eggs Benedict didn't come on bagels or sour dough bread just English Muffins - Hate this!!! Home made chips and sauce are pretty dam good, Granola was really average girlfriend complained it wasn't flash at all - And again no Biscotti FML!!!

Night menu- I had the fettuccine pasta and I don't recommend it, it was really salty. The waiter forgot one of our orders. I much prefer the morning and noon menu.

Great place, great staff and cliental, Onehunga's the new Ponsonby hehe!
Right so we had the eggs bene and two big breakfasts, my bene was divine and my guests big breakfast a great size for the $22 only thing both of them said against it was that the sausages were kinda dry/odd.
Fast efficient service and great coffee too, well done guys.
Took a caramel slice away that was delicious also, highly recommend A+

Fast and friendly service, the food was ready in about 7 minutes - very impressive! However the food did not match my standards - Eggplant Kasundi just simply did not work for me. Also, portion size was small would satisfy a snack but not a meal.

Dropped in here soon after it opened, just out of curiosity. The convenience of its location and the amount of people i'd always see reeled me in.

The place itself is nice and quaint but the food was nothing spectacular, really - i ordered a pork and apple dish for $13 or $14. The staff were friendly and quirky as i ordered, and the waiting time was reasonable. Maybe too reasonable. The serving size was a lot smaller than i expected, considering the price, and i consequently had to slow down to savour what i paid for. The pork wad cooked pleasantly, though.

Overall: Nothing great. Good for a quick bite, if you've got the funds to spare.

Such great service and great quality food&drink. The only down fall was that as we went to sit, it tables were a bit dirty but that was the only complication. Definitely recommend and will go again!

I dropped in with my boyfriend for breakfast on a Sunday morning after a friends' recommendation. It was super busy but we were immediately shown to a table. We ordered coffee, the Apple Crumble Waffles and the Brisket Sandwich (or burger) as well as a side of fries.

The food was outstanding and the brisket was easily the best brisket we've had in NZ so far! One of our coffees were burnt, so I politely asked for a replacement. Our waitress returned with a new one, then five minutes following, the barista came and replaced not one, but BOTH of the coffees, while apologising for serving the original burnt coffee. It was the coolest thing ever- having more than one staff member show that level of care over their product and service is something you definitely don't see frequently.

Overall, we were extremely satisfied with the fantastic service, the food was outstanding and we will definitely become regulars of this great cafe!

Such a great cafe!
A real hidden gem if you don't travel to Onehunga often! Amazing chips and there meals are great!
I usually have the smashed avocado or a salad, both are good!
Come here all the time
Gaby Ivanov-Giraldo
Amazing food! So filling and delicious! The classic brisket burger still fails to bore me with its tenderness and juicy beef. It literally melts in your mouth. Love the home-made pickles too! Fries are always crispy when served and service is fast and friendly.

This is an outstanding cafe! An unpretentious atmosphere with helpful, proficient staff and capable of seating a group easily (with lots of tables inside and out.) The menu has some really interesting choices amongst the usual staples and our experience (myself, my wife, mother, sister + brother-in-law and their three primary aged kids) was very, very good. The coffee was excellent. I would come back in a heartbeat.

Randomly dropped in here during the weekend whilst walking the dog with a friend. Was very happy with my meal which was their take on an american favourite - fried chicken and waffles!

Admittedly, I couldn't finish the two large waffles, but what I did manage with the crispy chicken was certainly very delicious!

My friend had the fish and chips, which I tasted, and also equally enjoyed. The hand-cut agria fries tasted like 'real potatoes' and the fish had lovely fresh flakey texture.

Lovely service from the staff, although I must admit, cafes that are dog-friendly, always seem to have thoughtful and helpful people working there :-)

A friend of mine posted a dish from this place so I thought I would give it a go. Place looked nice, layout works and the flow and art work was just right. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich and my friend had the waffles with fried chicken.

The waffles with chicken was lovely and the chilli maple was a nice touch. Would of been nice to get a little more.

But the pulled pork was terrible found a long blonde hair in it as I was putting in hot sauce. Left me feeling disappointed. I waved the waitress down and told her. She took it away and came back and apologized that's where it ended. No check backs, no refund and service. I was told at the start it was table service but it was non existent. Maybe they were new but no excuses for bad service.

I do have to give a shout out to supreme coffee, still great and bottomless cup perfect for an addict like me.

But it's not enough to save this experience, I will not return again.

So went for brunch here this morning and it was pleasant. The staff always smile and super friendly. Food came out in decent time even though they were packed. Eggs bene was ave, fish n chips were great, chicken waffles were interesting, snickers shake was decent bt needed ice cream for thickness and the fresh mix juice was good too. Overall very satisfied with this new joint. Defo worth a visit!

This place used to be a 4.5 for me but revisited recently and the standards have dropped. The chicken waffle is average.. The chicken is overcooked with hard crust. The waffles are soggy. The coffee didn't come. Until we finished our food. I think they got busy and didnt keep up with their quality. Disappointed

I finally got to try Onehunga café after few of my friends’
recommendation. Heading at the main road of Onehunga, which can be drawn
attention quickly, three quarter open window, also brighten the whole café. I
like the district planning wallpaper, it looks cool.

They are making great pastry especially I love the scone,
lightly sweetened and blending of sultana. About the coffee, to be honestly it
was a bit overpressure, I could have taste the bitter. I will still call in
this place again.

Onehunga Cafe is located on Onehunga Mall Road and opened earlier this year, quite a new kid on the block but already proving very popular. This is the new go-to place for my workmates and I when we want a treat ourselves.

Onehunga Cafe’s decor is very simple, no fuss and plenty of tables inside and a few outside (if you don’t mind the busy traffic flow!). I’ve been here a few times now and all occasions have been really nice. Great and friendly service and the wait for food isn’t too long. The menu is South American inspired with Chicken & Waffles, Poh Boys and Pulled Pork Burgers available. YUMMM!! So think Orleans, Miss Clawdy style of food minus the gumbo and jambalaya.

I tried the Pork Belly Poh Boy with palm sugar marmalade, coleslaw and thinly sliced apples. This is delicious! Definitely one to try. I definitely preferred it over the Fried Prawn Poh Boy which had cashews, slaw, bean sprouts and mayo. The prawns had this weird tasting spice I just didn’t like, which is a shame because I LOVE prawns.

My workmate had the chicken burger which she said was pretty good but she had to pay extra for cheese! What’s up with that?! Pretty sure all burgers should come with cheese already! Another workmate of mine had the chicken salad which looked really fresh and fulling too. My vegetarian friend had a courgette, feta and cornbread dish which looked really pretty and she thought it was tasty.

If you are in Onehunga, this place is worth checking out. Next time I’m here I will try the breakfast menu or their chicken & waffles and see how it stacks up against Orleans’. Do try their hand cut agria fries though, I would just come here for that alone it’s so good! If you have a sweet tooth like me, they do have some cakes and other treats in their cabinet or try one of their yummy house shakes. There’s a peanut butter flavour mmm.

We had gone to dinner at this cool place just after it opened, and it was incredible. This morning I took our daughter, who is young and groovy. She thought there were some rather attractive waiters, oh, and the fish & Chips were great. I had the Eggs Bennie, call me boring, and they were great. Coffee excellent, and her Hot Choc was supreme. But the best thing for us was the sheer buzz in the place, Sunday morning, around 10.30 and she was humming, felt very cool to be apart of it. Call it church, do I hear an amen. Staff all seemed right into it and happy. Might try for a 3rd visit soon. way to go Onehunga cafe.

I am always keen to try new places in my neighbourhood so popped in here this morning with a friend for brunch. The cafe is pretty large inside and they don't cram people in together which is nice! The service was good and friendly. We both had coffees which were good and for food I had the rhubarb waffles and my friend had eggs Benedict with gluten free bread. My waffles were really tasty although massive so I didn't finish them and my friend loved her eggs Benedict and polished it off.
Will definitely come back!

I was keen to give this new addition a go - i went for brunch on a weekend and felt alittle out of place. I wasnt sure if we would get handed menus or we had to get them ourselves... after ordering there was a moderate wait.. the coffee was average.. the food was also average - nothing amazing! Although lots of food on the plate.

I came here 3 times each morning as I was working at a customer's office nearby. The service is always really good, friendly and helpful staff. Thoroughly enjoyed the coffees each time AND I think I've sampled most of the sweet treats next to the counter. The muffins and brownies are just incredible, very soft, just the right texture and of course very tasty.

Coffee review only. Visited about 9.30am Thursday. Solo & takeaway coffee, but decided to linger to check it out.
This is the newest addition to Onehunga and much needed to add to the evening options for coffee & licenced eating.
Lots of seating - one big family group and many others. Nice to see lots of single seating (bar along the window).
Lovely friendly service.
Most importantly...DOUBLE SHOTS AS STANDARD! Sad that I should get so excited about this & annoying that it's a rare thing in Auckland. I liked that they do little takeaway cups as small. Coffee was great - lovely and smooth. Looking forward to trying the food.
Just be careful of the bench seats - not at all dangerous, just slide really easily while sitting on them.

Intriguing new cafe on the corner of Onehunga Mall and Arthur street.

Considering how many cafes there are in Onehunga, the news of this particular one didn't pique my interest until customers kept saying it's pretty decent - which has obviously given it a bit of hype.

I took the chance on Monday to go for dinner with some friends and it was fairly empty - it's usually bustling at night with a lot of people outside having a jug of beer or a few glasses of wine when I drive past on the way home.

It's a very rustic looking cafe in my opinion, half semi-formal and half relaxed decor - the back half of the inside looks a bit more modern whereas the seating outside remind me of American high school cafeterias with the long tables and benches.

Staff seem friendly enough, we were given the option to choose our seats - menu's were picked up ourselves on the way in and water was poured for us (although we had to request for a jug for the table). Someone must have mixed up the buttons whilst refilling the jugs as the first one was still water (possibly tap) whilst the second jug tasted like soda water (unless they offer 2 different types of water?).

There didn't seem to be much communication between staff as we had 2 different people serving our table and taking our order - note: the latter staff member being a little less enthusiastic when it came to taking our order.

The menu is fairly basic, with a few differing options - lamb, steak, fish, chicken etc. Meals came out in a decent time frame - the portion size is adequate for the price although I'd like to see how much you get for the $48 steak on the menu. I would have preferred if they asked me how I'd like my lamb done as it came out varying from medium - rare for some pieces.

My friend found a scale in his fish and chips - so I would recommend to maybe scale your fish a bit more thoroughly. There seemed to be an excessive amount of oil for my lamb dish. The tomato sauce for my fries may be homemade but I'm not a fan as it was way too sweet and had a slight taste of cinnamon to it.

Highlights were the meatballs and the dessert (chocolate mousse); the chef was kind enough to exclude the pineapple as requested and replaced it with other fresh fruit - it'd be nicer if it was chilled considering the summer temperature we have but I'm just being nit picky now.

I'm not a fan of the little window thing near the booth/toilets as you can somewhat see in/out into the kitchen/main floor and I felt like I was being watched - I did look over occasionally and had someone staring at me.

Overall it was an alright experience, I would like to try their breakfast menu as it seems like the only thing everyone is raving about. Oh, and try their Snickers shake (it's not on the menu but staff mentioned it before during my sister's visit here but it tastes a bit like reese's buttercups but more peanutty).

We recently visited newly opened Onehunga Cafe. I was sad to say it was a not the ideal experience that one hopes.

We came for brunch, but they had set times for breakfast and lunch, with the lunch menu beginning at 1130. By the time we sat down and read the menu it was just turned 1130, so we asked to order from the lunch menu, but was informed that we would have to wait an extra time then people ordering breakfast since the kitchen hadn't set up for lunch. So we all had no choice but to order from the breakfast menu.

When we ordered, two of the menu items we wanted had already run out, which is something you dont want to hear. The mushrooms on toast, was fairly disappointing, they weren't creamy, nor cooked long enough. My plate also came out with a dirty smear on the side. The berry smoothie I ordered I couldn't finish. The consistency and flavour had totally missed the mark. I tried the hollandaise sauce from one of the dishes, and there was far too much acid. Everything was sad looking and I don't think there was a lot of taste testing from the kitchen before the dishes were sent out. Components were also missing, such as the spinach from the eggs bene and the broad beans from the mushrooms on toast.

At the end of it all we did mention all these problems to the manager and he explained that there had been a menu issue. He mentioned that the kitchen was poorly organised due to the change that was supposedly starting the following day. He happily discounted all of our food and apologised. I am happy that he accepted our feedback and in saying that hopefully the cafe can only improve from here. However with all the strong competition in Auckland and new eateries opening up so frequently there is no room for errors. People will rule you out after their first experience and go to a place that gives great food and service straight off the bat.

Rating
Food: 3/10
Service: 6/10
Value for Money: Poor

259 Onehunga Mall, Onehunga
Can't seam to find opening hours - will update when i do. Enjoyed a Saturday afternoon late lunch here, the fries were crisp, the burger simple and delicious, the waiheke rose perfect. The dips that came with the chips were really nice too. The tomato relish had an Indian taste, nice! Service was fine, they explained they were starting the evening crew and letting the morning crew go but it didn't affect us. Will return
