Review Thai House - Auckland Central

Been waiting for a good Thai restaurant for a long time!!! Absolutely fantastic. I had steamed fish with lime juice and fish cakes, both of them were amazing 🤩 nice set up, the staff were lovely. Will definitely be back!

What's in the pic - Ho Mok Chicken, we loved it soooo much although the fancy flaming part was missing in the pic - Thai House Romance, cocktail, weirdly nice and remind me of some kinds of bubble gum? - Roti & Sticky Rice, good choices for carb! Both go perfect with other dishes Overall pretty satisfied 💘
Samantha Jane
Absolutely tasty food. My friends and I ordered various meals and shared them and every single dish was different but equally delicious. The service was friendly and I particularly loved the thai iced tea.

Very delicious. Bbq beef dish always has me coming back for more. The handmade entrees are also too good to miss. Best thai restaurant I've ever been to!
Mike
Great meal and service. The team were friendly, knowledgeable and took the time to explain the options. Food, beer & wine were all excellent, and great value.

I really like the ambience in this restaurant and the staff were quick, kind and helpful. The food was pretty good as well.

Amazing Thai food with friendly service. This popular family-run establishment has some excellent dishes and you can BYO. Highly recommended!

A good and reliable Thai restaurant. Supported by locals and travelers. Interesting, though, they don't place any name on the window or door. It makes the place somewhat less visible. The small street side sign is easy to overlook. Just being helpful here.

Legend! Must eat!🫶

Your pay for quality here. It’s a bit more expensive than a lot of other Thai food places but absolutely delicious. Got the prawn Penang and the prawn pad Thai. The Penang was creamy and flavourful with 9 (!!) big prawns. The pad Thai was the same and had the best flavour. Been looking for a solid pad Thai in NZ for a while now and finally found it. Can’t wait to come again

Everything we ordered was nice. Sizzling Garlic Prawns is one of the best i have tried. Garlic Snapper is the best whole snapper i have had in any Thai restaurant

Absolutely amazing food. Possibly some of the best thai meals we’ve eaten lately. The flavours were perfectly balanced in the chili chicken, pad see iew and chicken cashew nut. Will definitely return

Group dinner, food and service was amazing. Can't wait to go back

I’ve been here upwards of 10 times now with groups of varying sizes and everyone’s food has been consistently amazing every time. Highly recommend trying the taro & black bean cakes on their starters menu, as well as their ho mok tofu which comes out set on fire. All their dishes are amazing and the family who run it are lovely. Best Thai food in Auckland

Came here for a dinner with a friend on a Friday night and they were gracious enough to fit us in even though it seemed like they were set up for a large function that night. I ordered the pad thai and my friend got the sizzling tofu. Portions were decently sized and taste wasn't too bad either. The food also came quite quickly and the staff were attentive..

We ordered food delivered from Thai House. We usually order from a local Thai place, which is fresher, tastier and far better value for money.

The squid dish was very salty, the red curry nice enough and the pad thai was unlike any pad thai I've had before. Not enough flavour unfortunately and lacking the usual peanuts, chilli, herbs we usually get from our local.
Would not order takeaways/delivery again from Thai House.
Was good to reaffirm our usual Thai restaurant is definitely still our best option.

Absolutely amazing night at Thai House yesterday. Faultless service and food! we had a large group come in for byo, and we were definitely quite loud but the staff were extremely polite and smiling the whole way through. Little touches like getting us some fresh cut chilli, topping up our water and rice frequently really made the service even better.

We ordered a wide range of dishes, the two I tried were pepper chicken and fresh chili chicken and both were very yum. Lots of veggies and chicken pieces. A slightly smaller portion size - more fitting for one person and a little bit pricy considering you have to pay per person for rice. But the flavours and service made up for it so isn’t affecting my ratings

Byo is $8 per bottle which is definitely on the pricier side, but not a shock as it is in ponsonby. Absolutely great choice coming to Thai house and can’t wait to come back again.

This restaurant is quite small but nice and the staff here are very friendly and welcoming. The portions are perfectly sized and the food is very good

Always fab service and excellent food ! We don’t visit this restaurant nearly enough. Thank you for consistently being wonderful............

Great atmosphere and friendly staff.

We had the mixed plate entree which was ok. The curry puffs were slightly under fried. The chicken satay skewers were the best.

We also had the massaman chicken curry and the tamarind fried snapper.

The massaman curry was very sweet and not the massaman I remembered when in Thailand.

The tamarind fried snapper was the highlight of the evenings meal.

I am so impressed with this restaurant that I'm writing this review literally as I sit here with an empty bowl in front of me.

We came in with a large dinner group which we booked for 7.30 PM. While the actual restaurant is quite small and seemed a bit cramp. The friendly and warm staff on deck really added to the environment and made it seem a lot bigger than it actually was.

I ordered the chicken Pad Thai and friends and family ordered different dishes including Green Thai Curry, Massaman Curry and Chicken Salad etc.

There are race reviews from everyone. My own Pad Thai was reasonably priced for what I got but flavour and meal portion size were a good balance. Highly recommend this meal 🖤

Thank you team. You made my sisters birthday dinner a good one!

Very bad, the service is okay but the food are very salty, non of the food we oder is good, the worse restaurant i try, the price are very high. Not very good place to eat

Came here on a Sunday for dinner. We came when it just opened for dinner hours, so we were the first ones in.

We ordered the roast duck curry, pad thai, chicken salad, and Tom yum prawn soup. It was quite a disappointing experience to be honest as all the dishes were either too sour or too salty, except the Pad Thai which actually tasted like Pad Thai. The roast duck curry was too salty even though it had a tiny bit of sweetness and the soup was way too sour. The chicken salad was also sour and spicy which didn’t mix well in terms of flavors. If anything, I would suggest the Pad Thai.

In terms of the portion sizes, it’s pretty big considering the the price the dishes are offered so you don’t need to worry about not being full.

My sister ordered apple juice and later she found something in it with the straw which seemed like some sort of slime. The waiter was very apologetic and offered a replacement on the house.

Taste - 6/10
Size - 7/10
Price - 7/10
Service - 7/10

The food was good but just a little bit pricey maybe because of the location. And the portion are on the smaller side as well. Overall, an average experience.

Atmosphere: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Food: ⭐️⭐️
Service: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Definitely one of the worst Thai places I've been. Their service was really bad, had to call the waiters a few times before they came to take our orders. The restaurant was very cramped, could barely move at all.

The food was just awful and they charge you a fortune for it. I will never come back here.

We came here for a BYO on a Friday night. Staff was amazing and attentive. We were a table of 10 and food came out promptly and quickly. We all enjoyed our meals. I had the soup and everyone else had pad Thai, platter food, rice dishes and we all loved it.

Chose this place because it does BYO and there was a wide range of vegetarian options for my friends. When we got there the table was all set up and we got water straight away, with orders being taken not too long after.

When the food came out (which didn't take too long at all!) it was beautifully presented and the flavours were good but not too spicy. Atmosphere was incredibly loud but enjoyable, you could tell everyone was having a good time!

I had the sizzling garlic pork and it was super good with great spices and taste, along with a side of Tom Yum soup , which I didn't think was originally coconut based but worked really well.

Loved it, would recommend.

Came to Thai House after the epic failure to get service at Sawadee.
Walked in, greeted well, seated at a lovely table by the window.
Staff were really polite and efficient.

Ordered
Chicken with Ginger - Hot
Massaman Chicken curry - Medium

Chicken with ginger was nice, didnt have any real heat however. But flavoursome
Massaman Curry was tasty but a tad too sweet. Possibly a little too much
However in saying this they were delicious

Small funny moment, they ran out of ice and went to shop to get more. however waiting staff alerted us immediately and thats fine.

Despite having a really full house on a small restaurant, food was delivered quickly and well cooked

Nice Ambience, beautiful decor. Well behaved staff, average serving delay.
Ordered:
Chilli Chicken
Pad Thai Noodles
Caju Vegetables

All the 3 dishes were very good at taste. The presentation was appealing. The quantity was satisfactory and there was a touch of professionalism in this restaurant's dishes too. The blend of spices with proper cooking, spilled delicious flavours on the tastebuds, resulting in a wonderful experience upon a visit to this food express.

Pretty good Thai food, but didn't blow me away. I had the chicken panang curry, was nice but could be better with more vegetables to add some interest. Prices are what you'd expect, maybe a little on the pricey side, around $20, plus extra for rice. Staff were friendly and efficient, would return but not in a hurry. Great atmosphere.

This place is very cosy but a bit too small in my opinion. The food was nice just a bit expensive. It was good how they allowed BYO's but I thought the corkage fee was a bit pricey as well. But other than that the service was friendly and fast. I'm not sure if I would come back again just because it's definitely pushing it for a student budget 😁

Excellent Thai food, one of my favourites in Auckland. All food has amazing flavours and is quite reasonably priced. Great for a group eating out as you can get a range of dishes and share - beware though, there isn't a heap of space so it may be a bit of a squeeze. The staff are very friendly and the restaurant is always very clean. Highly recommend you try.

We ordered takeaways from Thai House as most of the other Thai places in Ponsonby were shut and this was the only place we could find. We ordered a mixed entree and satay chicken to share, a red curry and stir fried beef with oyster sauce. The satay chicken in the entree was nice, but the rest was really greasy and deep fried (spring rolls, curry puffs). The stir fry was nice but the curry was so salty and oily and the huge chunks of eggplant were not overly nice as they were very soggy. Probably wouldn't return as red curry is my partners favourite and he didn't enjoy this one.

Recently came here for a work dinner and was very excited to try as I always go to sawadee down the road and was glad try something different. Walking in it was a very small space and having my 20+ work team attending we were more or less quite squished though it was not the restaurant's fault. And with that with such a large group the service and delivery of food was surprisingly speedy so for that alone I would give 9/10. Overall the food aspect was also just as good I got the Tom Yum vegetable soup and it was very nice, good flavour and plenty of vegetables. Most of my friends got prawn pad Thai they were also not disappointed. I would definitely come back again if had the choice. Though I have had better.

The good things first:
Thai house is B.Y.O!!!!
Dim lighting means it good for intimate events!
Menu has something for everyone (vegetarian, fish, pork, chicken dishes as well as small plates).
The service here was good - they catered to one of my best girlfriends birthday and there was about 12 of us. Corkage fee was $8 and we had quite a few bottles.

The bad things:
The food was very overpriced. It cost over $20 for each main but they were certainly not worth it. I expected authentic Thai, instead I got a downplayed westernised version of dishes that are supposed to pack a pow.

The garlic chicken I had tasted like ginger chicken. It was so bland. My friend ordered cashew chicken and the sweet flavours were so overpowering. It didn't have Thai flavours at all. I tasted my friends beef dish, that redeemed "Thai house" a little but not enough to leave an impression.

Came here for a BYO as its a perfect spot in Ponsonby to start our night, was totally shocked by the prices of food- you order a $20 curry and then you have to pay extra for rice?! It's totally ridiculous, the food wasn't the best I have had either so was disappointed having to pay the price at the end of the night. The service was good though and staff very friendly.
Linny
What drew me to this place was that it was BYO so with a few girls in Ponsonby it was a great location for us to start out our night.

This is a typical more upmarket Thai restaurant so the dishes are a bit more pricier but considering rental in Ponsonby is absurd it's justified.

I ordered the pad see eiw, one of my favourite dishes and I was saddened to find I couldn't finish it since it was so salty. If they cut back on that it would have been such a delicious dish as I could taste all the flavours there I just couldn't get past the saltiness of it all. Upon tasting all the other dishes the girls chose it definitely seemed to be the same for them all.

It's a nice little place to wait out before going out to the bars if you factor in the BYO - makes for a cheaper night out but I think the food itself is just average overall which is such a shame!

Have been coming here atleast once a month for years. never disappointing. friendliest service and a huge menu of food items to choose from. Would recommend the Mixed platter to share for the table so each person gets a piece and taste of all the little entrees. For the mains the massaman beef curry is the way to go- my number one thai house dish to order, so good. or if you're feeling adventurous the Flaming Homok seafood is another of our top picks.

Although its a bit cramped sometimes, [bookings essential on Fri/Sat] its well worth it for the food and service they provide.

Would recommend to all people who like Authentic thai food.

Excellent Service, Great tasting food, a bit different to what I normally get for thai elsewhere. Mixed entree was a really good size. Did BYO but found out it was quite expensive.

4 of us ate there last night -never again! As we'd been pre-warned that the staff rush you, we booked for 8.00pm figuring they wouldn't be after another seating. WRONG. We were constantly hassled -no other word for it -to order, order-despite the fact that the restaurant wasn't full. It wouldn't be so bad if the food was so great that you could overlook the rude wait staff, but it wasn't. SALTY -I love salty -but 2 of the mains were very salty, and one was so sweet it tasted like dessert. Chicken dessert -it won't catch on! The 4th was mediocre. Entrees were okay. Rice -shame most of it was dumped on the table rather than the plates. The final straw -the bill. Hand scribbled, illegible, not itemized -certainly not claimable. 90 minutes later, outside for a unanimous decision -Never again!

Excellent experience here.

My friend and I went here for dinner on New Years day. We ordered the Miang goong as a starter which was delicate yet very tasty and probably would rank as the best starter I've ever had in a Thai restaurant. The flavours from the coconut, galangal, shallots, prawns, nuts and fish sauce (to name a few) combined brilliantly.

I had the prawn pad thai for the main and my friend chose the spicy chicken salad. Again, the pad thai was the best I've had and was laden with prawns. Sometimes restaurants can really let themselves down by only putting two or three in there but this was well worth the extra few dollars as they were just jammed in. Great flavours and very filling for what didn't seem to be a challenging size.

The spicy chicken salad was also good and had the right amount of heat for people who aren't into the sort of spice waves reserved for chilli psychopaths. Worked well with the jasmine rice too.

Overall it was a very good meal. The young bloke serving us was a bit aloof but was polite, as was everyone, and the food arrived in very good time.

Would recommend this to Thai lovers.

Came here on a Wednesday night after reading these reviews. Food was delicious! I ordered the green curry chicken and my partner ordered the sizzling garlic duck, the sauce was great! Friendly, quick service

I love this place! My favorite Thai restaurant in Auckland for sure! I've only ever dinned in so haven't tried the take-away and bookings are a must as there is only limited space and it's been packed every time we've been there.

We had a large group and were a little bit squashed on our last visit but the service was still good and the food was as awesome as ever.

great place i think they over do it a bit on the filling up of punters not saying this is bad its just i have found that it can get a bit to busy for the staff and u find yourself waiting for drink orders..
but all round the best thai i have had in nz for a long time

The best Thai restaurant I have been to. The food was AMAZING! Absolutely delicious.. Would definitely go back, no other Thai restaurant will be able to match up to the food now I have tasted this! I ordered The prawn toast and the sizzling prawns for a main. It's also BYO wine which I know for next time
Gloria
Have always walked past this restaurant....won't do it anymore. Beautiful food. Best Garlic prawns I've ever tasted. Just delicious!!! Staff are very friendly and welcoming. It Was a really busy Saturday night. I didn't book yet they squeezed my friend and I in. I will be going back there on Monday and taking my friends along with me.

One of Auckland’s finest Thai Restaurant.

Never go there if you are on a diet!

Service is excellent and every time I've been there I've never been disappointed once. The staff are attentive and food to die for. Well priced, good portions and consistent with the high standard of food and service. Always a great joy to dine there.

Thai house is one of our two favourite take out restaurants (the other being Satya for Indian). We don't often dine in but had the chance to last week and the dine-in experience is also good. The staff kept our wine glasses topped up, the food was excellent and the ambience was great. I recommend you book as the restaurant is always full during the weekend evenings.

In terms of dishes basically anything is good but my favourites are the Chicken Laab (Chicken Salad) and the yummy pork. The duck was also excellent.
