Review Marina Thai - Auckland Central

Sherryk Koswara
Food was fantastic, good range of choices in the menu, starters, mains and desserts. Highly recommend the Chicken Satay skewer mains and Deep Fried Ice Cream dessert. Staff regularly checked on you so you never feel unattended or missing something. Outdoor seating was really enjoyable especially in Spring, nice and warm arranged in a way where the wind breaks. View is otherwise obstructed by overgrown plants and vehicles.

Five of us arrived at 7.30pm on Wed 28/6. Nice welcome and outdoor table had good overhead heating in chilly weather. We all enjoyed our choices of red curry, seafood on fried rice and chicken with cashew nuts and rice. Attractively situated but too dark for a view.

When it comes to Thai food I have a certain standard. Sorry folks, but I am not a fan of kiwi style Asian food. I run after authenticity and that's the ultimate factor. This is a good place to enjoy a meal time with family and friends. With incredible sea view and outdoor seating. This is definitely a good choice for non-spicy food lovers yet still looking for some exotic experiences. But, this is not for me. It's too sweet, barely can taste any spiciness.

Yum We were a little nervous given the recent reviews. Food was delicious, well priced and we had lovely covered seating. Would recommend more staff as the two they had serving were run off their feet and taking ages to clean up tables after people left - leading to new customers having to wait a while for a table due to the non clean one not being available.

Authentic tasting Thai Restaurant in Half Moon Bay Marina. The restaurant faces the water with a lookout over the Marina. Best to book ahead, as it can get busy even on weekdays. The curries were lovely, especially the lamb shank which I've not had before at other Thai Restaurants. Ask for the Kid's Menu, if you need it

First time trying this place. Saw that they had the Thai fried snapper which is one of my favourite Thai dish so we gave it a try. We also ordered pineapple fried rice. The snapper was different to what I normally have since this was just fillet and not the whole fish snapper. Taste is not bad, but since our standard for this dish is very high, this was not amongst the best ones. The pineapple fried rice was not bad also, strong in tumeric flavour, not enough pineapple but still tasted good. Good portion size and good price. Will come to try their curry next time. Service here is not bad, the person who served us although she was rude, it was very efficient. So if you are looking for fast and efficient service and have a good EQ then this is good place to be.

Was really good - compared to other Thai places the service was excellent by all 3 people we dealt with. The food is also very good - especially the fried ice cream!

Nice Thai place. Booking essential. Last order is at 9:00. You can stay till 10. We ordered tulip chicken which was chicken wings shaped like lollipops and deep fried, deep fried tofu and Tom yum soup for starter. The masaman curry and Panag snapper was good quantity for main. Deep fried icecream was good but a bit doughy.

Went here for the first time for lunch this weekend and everything was perfect! The food and drinks were great, the atmosphere was nice, the waiters were so kind and friendly, and on top of that I asked for a cake with candle on it and you guys went above and beyond and made the dessert look so amazing (it also tasted great too!). Thank you for your wonderful service, we will definitely be back!

5 Stars Deluxe! Service, location, value-for-money perfect! The Curry as well as the starters were one-of-a-kind. Best Thai food I‘ve had since years.

Staff are friendly and the service is good. Very close to the bus stop and ferry. Duck Curry and pad thai are my favourites. Thai tea is nothing special and the dessert menu is small but similar range around Auckland. The lunch special menu is quite reasonably priced. One of the better Thai places out East, very consistent with quality. Also available via Uber eats but there is a mark up.

Very nice ambience, nice decor. Staff is very professional and sweet. Covid protocols were followed well. Our food was yummy, dessert was the highlight 👌.

Had the pleasure to have a wonderful meal in this nice Thai restaurant inside the marina. Food is amazing for those spicy lovers. We had beef salad and some chicken, well marinated and delicious. It was partial sunny day and the harbor view was astonishing. Inside is nicely decorated and cozy. Worth coming!

Foods so yummy here. Reasonable prices. Clean tidy place. The only thing I didnt like was unfriendly staff. Otherwise everything is fine. Great place for a restaurant ocean views. Love it.

Came here on a nice evening. The outdoor seating here is great with the view of the marina. A very relaxing and calm atmosphere allows you to enjoy your food. The quality of food is quite good, as most Thai food is and it came out quickly. Prices, especially given the view are quite reasonable. I will definitely be returning here.

I really enjoyed eating at Marina Thai. Staff were nice. Food was amazing, and waiting time was very short. Staff were very friendly and the view and atmosphere was fantastic. Prices were fair. Highly recommended!

A very good Thai restaurant, I think may be some kind of material cannot easily found in nz, the taste a bit different from the original Thai food.

Iced lemon tea is delicious. Tea is Thai tea? Very wonderful taste, love it! Thai milk tea is also fabulous! The food is very good. Really enjoy here

My first time here, i normally go to the Grange but it was too busy so we decided to come here and I'm surprised myself that i have not been here sooner as the food we got was really good and it come out quick too and good value for money. We we're served by a lovely lady and I'll definitely will be back.

We wanted to go out and try out some eateries in Half Moon Bay and decided to try this Thai place out. I ordered Penang Prawns and Cashew Duck. First forkful had a curl white hair. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and wanted to not think it was public hair and make a scene. The other duck meal ask had a small strand of hair. No one came up to ask how things were going. Took awhile to get someone’s attention, told the waitress about the hair and our thoughts and was met with “oh sorry”. We pay, they asked how it was and we and tell the owners about the hair, and was met with silence. We spent over $70 for 2 mains, entree and 2 non alcoholic drinks. We didn’t want a discount, we wanted a good meal and experience but got none. I wish people would have pride in their food and service. Highly disappointed.

One of my fav Thai spots in Auckland especially on a sunny day! Good value at lunch time. The atmosphere marina side is amazing. Great service and authentic.
Kim Salud
Food was great and has a good ambience. It was not a busy time when we went and the food was served really quick. You’ll also have a good view of the marina while eating.
Sharon Lang
First time here. Busy at lunchtime but our food was served fast and it was delicious. Great value and for the two of us less than $40 for mains and entree

Amazing Location. Great customer service and friendly staff.Food is a bit pricy compared to other Thai Restaurants. Food tasted pretty average not the best I’ve had but did enjoy the fish dish and the desert.

I think I finally found my new favourite Thai eatery!

Location is amazing, have previously dined at the restaurants next door to Marina Thai and always wanted to try it out, so I finally did.
My chicken red curry was made just the way I like it and was made exactly the same as my yellow curry order at another Thai restaurant which I thought no other place could beat! But I was wrong. The flavour, taste, everything was amazing.
The tofu vegetarian pad thai was also super yum and was bursting with flavour!

Dining experience was great, staff were friendly and accommodating during our stay.

Would definitely be back again when I’m craving some authentic Thai food 😍

A great position. Service was fine, but the food was ordinary. For a Thai restaurant, the food lacked flavour, and was very disappointing. Maybe the chef just had an ‘off’ night?

Always our go to place in East Auckland. Nice to stroll through the marina before dinner. They have the best Pad Thai we’ve found so far in Auckland

When we arrived at 7pm on a Sunday night it was busy and understaffed .... we were sat a little out of direct view from the staff, we were delivered water and then waited a full 20 minutes without a drink or food order being taken, after I fetched a staff member they were sorry and friendly, our drinks were fast to arrive and the food fast too. The food was lovely, we had standard Thai fare with lovely flavours and lots of tender meat and really nice veges. After dinner we waited a long time again and had to approach staff for a 2nd drink (to get zomato gold privileges) .... 2nd drink did arrive quickly. We had a desert which was nice also. When we went to pay it was a complete shambles, we were entitled to 2 free drinks but they deducted half of one drink, after the maths was done a refund was made, but I had to be firm in asking to see the receipt as I knew we had been well over charged.

Went here for my birthday recently and was not disappointed. The service was great, and the food was amazing as well. We had about 6 dishes between the 7 of us and there was plenty to go around. All the dishes were amazing, each with its own unique taste. I would definitely visit again when I’m in the area.

When we bought Zomato, Marina Thai was offering Food 1+1. Their entire scheme has now changed to Drinks only.
Very unhappy with this sudden change ☹️

Yesterday I came in to have dinner with my family, we ordered cashew chicken, roast duck and bbq pork sparerib. By far the best ive tried in a while. The duck was very tender and tasty, other resturants have fat and bones where this one does not have any. The chicken cashew was very fresh and flavour-some along with the spare ribs. Service was good and the staff are very friendly and well mannered. Only concern is it can be quite noisey during dinner peak but aside from that I would strongly recommend.

Food was good but very poor service. When we came in, the restaurant was empty and they told us to sit outside. I told one of the waitress that we have zomato gold and asked if theres any food we cant order her reponse was "show me that you have zomato gold first and unlock it" with an angry tone and she looked pissed off. Few mins after we ordered, we felt a bit cold sitting outsude so we asked if we could move inside since it was literally empty and the response was "ok but leave before 7.30" with a pissed off tone again. We really enjoyed the food. The tomyum soup and fish were very lovely but because of the poor service, we probably wont be coming back. We just didnt feel comfortable here and we would rather just go to other thai restaurants.

Great food as always. Had Massaman Lamb Shanks, Crab Fried Rice and Stir Fried Garlic and Black Pepper chicken. Lamb Shanks are my favorite and they have never disappointed me, and for the last couple years I have been coming here across the city especially for that. I always ask for Thai Hot and they always get it right. Looking forward to going there again. Service was friendly as usual, we were quickly attended too and food arrived promptly.
Constance Fang-Chu
The food is nice and staff are helpful and friendly however when we used Zomato gold paid for buy one get one free, it’s deducted the $12.5 kid meal instead of the main course (we ordered two mains). I just think it’s not fair or they need to tell us when we order

Took my parents here for dinner. Was kindly welcomed by the boss and was given a nice seat with a great view.
For mains we had a stir-fry cashewnut chicken, snapper panang and duck garlic pepper.
It was a busy night but the wait was not too long. When the meals arrived we were delighted to see the portion sizes. The food was delicious. Definitely would recommend trying the snapper : fresh fish topped with a flavorful sauce.
Will be back soon.

Ordered the Tom Yum King Prawn Soup and the Chicken Red Curry; both were delicious and had great flavours. Reasonably priced for the tasty food and the good portion size.
Interior and exterior seating available with a pleasant view of the marina. Plenty of parking nearby and an easy to find location.

Delicious food! Had the satay beef and my partner had the chicken satay 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 super filling. Lemon and lime bitters was made, not from a bottle 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻 Will definitely be back for more.
Jessica Zhang
Food is alright but the service is very bad. I’ve visited this restaurant quite often as I’m living nearby. The service is really disappointing me this time I won’t visit anymore.
Wennn
The counter service is really unfriendly when we show the Zomato gold member to them, but the food taste is not too bad. Just recommend the food but not the service.
Corey Liú
Food is not bad, but when the counter knows we are Zomato gold membes, she shows pretty bad attitude to us, and seems like she is not very familar the rules. Highly not recommended for Zomato gold member!!!

Overall average experience, the Tom yum soup was different to what I expected. Usually when I have it at other restaurants there’s so many vegetables and such where as here I got a bowl of soup with a few mushrooms and 3 pieces of prawns. The other 2 dishes we go was okay, the sauce was water like rather than thick consistency. The sticky rice for dessert was the best out of everything, the mango accompanied it very well, there was no point of having the strawberry sauce there. We were asked if we wanted the dishes coming together and we of course said yes but we got them one by one regardless, we waited for our drinks for a long time as well.
Marcella
We came here on a busy Friday night and got the ginger pork dish and the marina duck dish. The wait was a bit long but it was understandable as it was a Friday. Although the food looked inviting, the flavours were lacking and weren’t up to expectations. I do think that the Pakuranga branch is better. Also got the lemon tea drink which was interesting. Overall, it wasn’t a bad experience but not the best Thai experience.
Holly93
Great food. We ordered curry puffs to start which were delicious. Had peanut satay dish with chicken, one of our personal favourites and also the cashew nut stir fry beef. Lovely meal and ambient location sitting outside however service was a bit substandard. We placed our order but we were then offered to order a further 3 times after that so there were some communication issues there. Also mentioned our gold membership prior to ordering food then once we reached the counter were told we couldn’t use it as we had not mentioned it before ordering, even though we had. Fortunately it was granted anyways and rest assured it was just a one off tonight. Nonetheless a great meal and we will definitely be back.
Connie Kang
The food and service were great! We were sitting outdoors which gave us more room to chat. It’s a BYO restaurant always a plus for customers!
J Eats
Decent food but the only let down was the egg shell which I initially thought was a bone when I took a spoonful of food. The food is genuinely okay but this review is solely based on our visit and due to the egg shell, was not a good one this particular time. Would’ve hoped a remediation was offered but to no avail.

I found out on my third visit Zomato gold users can only order off the dinner menu here, ordered the same dish 3 different times with gold and service varied each time. Been told the last two visits there wasn't any snapper and served hoki instead while using gold

I came here on Friday night to celebrate my mums birthday. My partner and I arrived first and we were not greeted or acknowledged. We were standing for about 5-10min at the counter and one of the waitress ignored us and then went to take orders on another table (she looked busy but she could have said won't be long). Another waitress took us to our table.

The entrees were nice and came out in a reasonable time. I ordered chicken satay and the sauce was quite nice.

We waited over an hour for our mains and my sisters meal didn't come out. They had forgotten about it and was very disappointing as we didn't want to wait any longer and so my sister didn't order anything else and shared with my mum. The other meals all came out at different times so half of us were eating and the rest were waiting. My meal was pretty average and my vegetables were cold. The portion wasn't very big and so I was still left hungry after.

Probably won't come back until the customer service and food is improved. Bit of a shame as it is located in a nice area.

Good views, but bad food. Had the tom yum prawn soup, it looked and tasted waterd down, when I told the staff they didnt care. My friends had the pad thai, it wasnt great- they have had better. Try the other resturants in the marina, and if you want good thai food; you wont find it here, go some where else.

A sleepy Sunday morning took my family to Marina Thai for lunch, It had been a while since I last ate here so I was looking forward to it.

The Pad Thai (with chicken) contained the usual elements like nuts, carrots and beansprouts but unfortunately did not live up to expectations. The noodles were a touch lacking in softness and I found the sauce a bit too tangy.

The best way I can describe the Fried Rice (with prawns) is it tasted like Chinese vegetarian fried rice. The prawn pieces were commendably large and the rice was tasty enough. I did however find the rice a little too oily - at least oilier than I expected it to be even if it is fried rice.

The Duck with Garlic & Black Pepper Sauce on Rice was easily the best thing we ordered. The sauce was runny (as I noticed Thai non-curry sauces tend to be) but flavorful. It carried the famous 'roast duck sweetness' as well as garlic and black pepper elements. The pieces of duck it included were good and I thought the accompanying mixed vegetables - cabbage, broccoli and green bean were a nice touch.

The setting was nice given it was a sunny day and it wasn't very crowded but I feel like it could get a bit claustrophobic during peak hours. The service is fine and portion sizes decent. I remember the takeaway portions being a lot smaller.

Marina Thai doesn't make bad food but they don't produce particularly memorable food either. At the end of the day it's just another Thai restaurant.
Wayne Potgieter
Very disappointing.

The portion size for our takeaway is absolutely tiny.

I ordered a vegetarian green curry. There are 2 slices of carrot. 4 pieces of Tofu. A small amount of mushrooms and that’s really it. It’s all rice. Here is a photo of it.

I love this place! Only problem is that it’s a bit dim and gets too loud but the food and service is amazing. The prices are reasonable for the tasty food. The customer service was amazing not to mention and they managed to squeeze us in with despite the busy time on a Saturday night and only wait for 25-35 minutes for three dishes.
Tony Shi
Ok thai restaurant located in Half Moon Bay but they do have some unique dishes that other places don't have which is a positive.
Some of their fish dishes are on the expensive side e.g. fish with sweet chilli sauce had a total of 8 medium sized pieces for $26.50.

Food: 3/5
Service: 3/5
Environment: 4/5

This used to be our favourite place but I can surely say not anymore! Went there for mums birthday in February staff were extremely rude. Didn't even offer a table. We sat down and waited for almost 30 mins and no one came to us. Trying to forget this terrible experience we went again on mothers day and the same thing happened. I guess they're a little racist too because I'm brown we were told there are no tables. Europeans who came after us were shown the way to the tables that were empty. We managed to ask for a table for mum and I outside in the sun. No shade nothing. After 25 to 30 mins we had to wave someone to come get our order. We had just taken our last bites of food from our plates and didn't even have the time to put our spoons down when the waitress came and stood behind us to take the plated and spray the table as we were siting. NEVER EVER returning BACK to this RUDE PLACE making sure I spread my experience around.

Love the location as it has a seaside view where you can see the boats and yachts. The food is good, I personally love the deep fried snapper with Thai herbs. It can get busy at dinner time so it pays to have a booking to avoid any seating problems.
Ruby Tuesday
Food was average. Service was very poor. Waitress cleared half the plates then wandered off and never saw her again until we paid the bill. No offer of tea or coffee or desert but still a 15% holiday surcharge and the place was virtually empty. If it wasn’t for the marina location I wouldn’t bother going back.
Soph
Such delicious food and a great vegetarian menu. I had a tofu pad Thai without egg and they are open it allergies. Their a little bit pricy, but worth it. Highly recommend!
Cookingkenny
Pretty good, not the best Thai I’ve ever had but everything tasted nice. They were super busy being the only place open in the area and the waitstaff were rushed off their feet but even then the turn around was pretty normal.

THIS IS FROM A VERY CLOSE FRIEND...AND I GET REALLY CROSS WHEN I HEAR OF SUCH BAD TREATMENT TO CUSTOMERS...I had the whole family there for dinner including my two year old. Towards the end of the dinner, my two year old cried and screamed. The business owner (I assume he is) asked me to take my son outside because he is interrupting other people. It is a Saturday night and the restaurant is full.Really disgusting. I was at the counter paying the bill when my 2 yr old cried. I really don’t see the need to tell me to take him outside. Even worse, he rolled his eyes! He was so thick! I told him that I hope he wouldn’t do this to other mums or dads but I certainly will make sure all my friends know what kind of service he provides...JUST SHOCKING!!!
Anna An
Very bad service, will never go back. My two year old was crying towards the end of the dinner. The business owner asked me to take him outside and rolled his eyes. He said that we are interrupting other people. The restaurant is full of people and it is actually very noisy, no one is really bothered by my son. I was there at the counter paying the bill and about to leave anyway. He was very rude and not professional at all. This is the first time I have experienced this in a restaurant. Mind you, this is not even a fine dinning place. It is noisy like a bar. You have to kinda yell to be able to have a conversation. Ridiculous and not acceptable. Make sure you don’t go because you may be treated without respect.
Flay Loo
Service man does not know what he is doing when customers arrived and if you doing service job, keep the attitude at home. Food is average but way over priced. Points only gave for the view. If not friend invited would just left.
Laura G
If the view here wasn't so great I wouldn't bother going. We went for lunch on a Saturday and were the only ones in the restaurant. We thought we would be able to choose our seats because there was nobody else there but the waitress tried seating us right next to a massive party of 30 kids who were next to us at Marina Cantina. I had to ask for us to be seated outside away from the noise. Little bit weird. Anyway we ordered and the Spring rolls were very disappointing. We are regulars at Thai Family Pakuranga and the Spring Rolls really didn't live up to our expectation. We asked for 2 servings of Spring Rolls and instead received 1 serving split in two plates. I couldn't be bothered complaining because I didn't want to have to wait for a second lot. Our mains came next and were nice. Too expensive compared to other competitors. But overall the sub standard service and disappointing entrees for a quiet Saturday were very underwhelming. Thai are known for their friendly welcomes in restaurants and these guys have no hospitality skills whatsoever. Won't be back. They are lucky to have the location on their side.
Reem
Usually was a regular here, however the service recently on the last occasion was horrible. I think the attitude of your staff needs to be looked at. As we where the only customers in for lunch I don’t see how moving a table for us to fit more people, and wiping up a spillage of water is difficult ( both workers made a fuss about moving the tables and muttered “lucky me” when told about the water). Won’t recommend coming for lunch here.
Anita Zahoor
I was never a big fan of Thai food but i tried this place as its a local and I was pretty impressed. My favourite dish is the duck. Its cooked to perfection, tender and flavourful. You can tell them how spicy you would like your meal and they adhere to that. All in all not a bad place for the people living in this area wanting a quick fix of thai.
Francis Goode
A very nice place to have lunch with friends and family. The view is also fantastic. Overall, food is pretty good. :) The proportions are also relatively large so it's a good deal.
Rachel
My order: Seafood garlic & black pepper $26.50We were at a busy time where all tables looked full and the sound of people talking everywhere made it a little difficult to hear the person across from you.Service: even though they were busy it took a decent amount of time before food started to arrive, but the service was wasn’t slow. Out of the group I was with, only mine and another were last to get our meals.I remember there was the option to have a plate with rice. My dish was a good portion size and had lovely flavours - I really enjoyed its taste! It was not spicy, but the temperature was piping hot along with the taste. I was impressed overall and the evening was enjoyable.
Karen
Chicken stay was good. Spring rolls, not. Service was mediocre. Nice atmosphere by the marina. Here on a Sunday, mid afternoon, did not appear so busy to justify the slow service.
Sades
Lovely relaxing location. Fast service, lovely waitress! Very reasonably priced especially for alcohol!
Food was great for the price! Would recommend if you want a nice relaxing meal next to the harbour!
Ashlene Cheryl Cardoza
Average food. Inattentive service. Extremely busy place so food took a while. Pad Thai is quite bad...barely any peanuts and just too sweet.
STRADS
We had dinner on a Saturday with friends from overseas. As Marina Thai was beside Granger & Marina Cantina, live music was terribly distracting, if one didn't like it. We had the mixed entrées, BBQ pork spare-ribs, red curry duck, tamarind sauce prawns & fried rice with chicken for sharing. Spare-ribs were tasty, but all others were just average. Wait staff was very inefficient. (Food - 3.5/5; Service - 2.5/5; Ambience - 3.5/5)
Mark
Noisy and unpleasant evening experience here.
Takeaway sales mean continual movement of people through door and past tables. This clearly overloads kitchen as mains took an hour and half to arrive. Grinning and apologetic staff...need I say more.
TheGoodKiwi Nz
A more obliging owner you could not find. Did gluten free for us. and a menu for 5. Decided to have the banquet at $32 a head as that seemed cheapest way to go. The a la carte menu specials seemed slightly more pricey than usual Thai. Everything was very tasty, the lamb, prawns, chicken Massaman curry and beef and peanut sauce. Service we thought was timely and nice. Will be on my list to return to.
Jennifer King
It's always busy there. Quite reasonable price and friendly staffs. The food tastes alright. Not the best Thai restaurant in auckland tho. Can't complain much .
Joni
Guaranteed amazing food and dessert. Byo which is a plus. Unfortunately the service was very slow and below average. A great night had by us, still very impressed with how good the food is!
Kershia
We visited Marina Thai yesterday for lunch & I have to say the venue is beautiful. There is a lovely view of the marina with all the boats & it was relatively busy as well.

The service though was completely terrible. The wait staff behave as if they are doing you a favour by serving you at all.

The male there, gave us three menus when there were four of us and when we asked for an additional one just stomps of and grabs and puts it on the table. No word of apology.

The waitress had a serious attitude problem which was evident when we quickly asked to change our drink orders which was by the way right when she was taking the order not after she had gone and come back or something.

We ordered our chicken tulip entree which was delicious. But she just plonked it down on the table, no side plates for each of us to eat which I thought was quite rude and not sure whether they have a plate shortage but most people generally like to have something in front of them not just pick food off a common plate and drop crumbs all over the show.

Our mains arrived, however only two. There were four of us at the table. We had to wait about five min for the other food to arrive which is a bit awkward. They really should arrive at the same time. Once the food is dumped on the table the waitress just disappears & you don't see them again which makes it impossible to order anything further, or ask for anything.

The food quality itself was good. For me personally I had the beef red Thai curry which I enjoyed. The lamb pad char or whatever that my companion had was apparently not very nice though. So inconsistencies with the food. The pricing was really good though & I thought that the portion sizes were pretty decent for the price.

Overall this place would get a much higher rating if the experience were more pleasant. Perhaps consider having staff that smile and are friendly and understand the concept of customer service. Having stone faced, barely present staff and incredibly bad service lets this establishment down.

I have been to Red Elephant in New Market where the service could not be faulted at all. Which is what you expect. Noticed this was not the only review where service is an issue. Won't come here again or recommend it to anyone because of this.

Overall food was okay, service was terrible and location was excellent.
Royce Lv
This cafe is truly short of employees that we waited for 40mins for a salad and a soup and a main, even their waitress was helping cook! Rolls are cold inside,‘we are quite busy' when asked why rolls are cold inside. Wont come again😣
Lori
Great atmosphere and friendly staff. It's always busy but you don't feel like you wait ages to be served or for your meals to come out. Would definitely recommend!
Carlo C.
Our go to place if we fancy Thai food. The best Thai restaurant in East Auckland in my opinion. Service is great especially if the Filipina staff is the one serving you. Pad Thai, Green Curry and Med Ma Muang are among our favourites. Plus you get a magnificent view of the marina.

Went in for a late lunch yesterday with my wife was greeted well by the waitress initially we only wanted to have a look at their menu but after looking at the menu me and wife decided to have a chicken and beef fried rice and spring roll with it . The food was really nice the friend rice had Thai flavours and also was made according to the spiciness we wanted. The waitress was really attentive and efficient would definitely recommend this restaurant to everyone and it has good food and an amazing location kudos guys great going cheers

Marina thai is one of my favourite thai restaurants in East Auckland. Ive dined in and grabbed takeaways from here and cannot fault their green curry nor their chicken cashew nut dishes- Super plus theyre super cheap during lunch!

For dinner, the satay chicken skewers are amazing as is the lamb shank massaman curry. Service is quite efficient and meals don’t take too long to be served.

Also love the view from the outside. Not too many thai places can offer you that ;)
Mat
Marina Thai is probably my favourite Thai restaurant. Definitely try the chicken Pra Ram Song, it will not disappoint. While I commend the food, I also want to add that this restaurant provides an amazing view of the marina - Definitely a goodie on a hot summers day.
Josh Law
Right on the waterfront at Half Moon Bay Marina. We had Mussaman Curry and a fried snapper dish. The mains for lunch are affordable between $12.50 to $16 for the fish dishes. The food was fantastic. The curry was extremely rich (might be a bit rich for some people though). I forgot to prompt the. Regards spiciness so all the food was very mild. Next time I'll spice it up and see how we go.

Been here once ages ago, and this time come with few mates for dinner. They are full house, even though they are so busy, the food did not disappoint any of us, still remain good standard. The great service just icing on the cake for awesome dinner night. Great job Marina Thai!!
Paola Gee
Yummy Thai food, with great portions too (I'm all about the portions)! The man who is always there, and I think is managing it, is very friendly and lovely. He anticipates what we ask for way in advance and makes the whole experience lovely. I've been to Marina Thai a few times now as it's just down the road from where I live and I've been very happy with my food. The rating I'm giving is based on their lunch prices however. For me, lunch time is the best time to come here because their food is reasonably priced and you get a great view of the marina along with it! This time around, we ordered the prawn pad thai and their red curry. Delicious. The guy sensed that we were struggling to pick which meat to go in the curry and suggested to why not have it all! So we had a mix of chicken and beef, had the best of both worlds. Their pad thai is great and they give you heaps of prawn with it too. Another dish I recommend is their massaman curry and the red curry but with the duck and fruits :)

I have been here twice. We always get the pad thai and pineapple fried rice. The fried rice has a lot of flavours and the texture is really good. The pad thai with prawns lacks abit of sauce as the noodles were dry and chewy. The food generally is quite nice and the price is relatively cheap in relation to the portion u get. But the service isn't too friendly or kind. They left the menus on the table and left without saying anything. The waitress came off abit rude when she was taking our orders, as she just didnt look like she really cared e.g. looking away, rolling her eyes and frowning alot. We were one of the first customers to arrive that afternoon, so we expected abit more cheerfulness. What really annoys me though, is that our food didnt come out all at the same time, so theres always that awkwardness where we sit and wait until all our food arrives to eat even when some of us already got our food.

A warm and friendly environment to dine in! We came here as a group and although the prices were a little expensive, the food was extremely satisfying and flavourful. I had the Massaman Chicken Curry and it was delicious! I loved it! We had deep fried ice cream and coconut ice cream for dessert. The deep fried ice cream was average but the coconut one was really nice and I would highly recommend it to anyone dining there! Overall, an excellent dining experience!

Although small these guys do great food. The chicken satay starter is amazing, one of the best peanut sauces I've had, and the seafood green curry to die for. This is my regular Thai restaurant. Always great food and good value. You don't walk away hungry but you know you'll be coming back soon.

We decided to try eating here for lunch, we were greeted a wonderful view of the marina. When we arrived at the place, we greeted by one of the staff and were guided to our table.

We ordered Chicken Satay, Tom yum with king prawn, med ma muang, pineapple fried rice. Good thing we asked the staff about the size of the dish, as the fried rice is good enough for two. The soup is not that spicy which is what I like and the food was tasteful. I tried to take pictures but when the fried rice came, I just took a portion and forgot about the photo. My daughter loved the lychee juice.

Overall I would say we had a full stomach and enjoyed the food and the service. We will definitely come back.

A discovery of a recent close-down of my family's favourite Thai restaurant lead us to Marina Thai. The restaurant is situated in a beautiful location overlooking the sea and the boats, and we happened to go in for lunch on a gorgeous, sunny day that made the view all the better. We visited just as it had opened for lunch service, and greeted very kindly by cheerful staff, and chose a table right near the front for the sunshine.

The lunch menu has a good selection of dishes, including seafood and duck, all of which were at decent prices for lunch. We ordered a red curry, pad thai, pra ram, and med ma muang, which was relatively fast to come out.

Upon first bite, the dishes were flavourful and very fragrant, but a few more following made us realise that the intensity of taste actually came from a large imbalance of salt and sugar which, while sort of counteracting the other, felt unpleasant nearing the end of the meal.

Despite good first impressions, I wouldn't return. The food itself is far too sweet and salty simultaneously.

Have been here three times in the last few months. This place is always busy - and with good reason, food is excellent and service cannot be faulted.

Highly recommended. Order the Massaman curry and/or any of the duck dishes, you will be in for a treat.

Unbelievable Experience. Service was second to none, quick friendly and very hospitable. Fantastic value for money without compromising on portion size or quality. I had the Lambshank which fell off the bone. I feel like this would be one of the best Thai restaurants I have been to.

Fantastic, friendly service and really tasty food. Had the vegetarian spring rolls to start, delicious and crispy, followed by vegetarian green curry. So much flavour, generous portion, very impressed. Slightly overpriced but will be back!

A bit overpriced but great food! I would come again for a nice dinner gathering. They have lots of choices and curry was very nice. The pork ribs were an absolute killer, real nice. I loved their drinks, some sorta blended juice and well presented. The atmosphere was very nice and quiet. I really enjoyed it

Came here 2 weeks ago. They were quite busy and we were lucky to get a table.
We ordered 4 dishes. Massamam lamb shank, chicken cashew nut, red duck curry and a prawn curry.
It was really delicious, everything was cooked perfectly and was full of flavour. No skimping on flavour here. My least favourite dish was the Massamam lamb shank, I generally don't enjoy lamb as much in thai curries as I do beef, I found it a little bit too rich for me but every one else at the table enjoyed it.

Amazing views and atmosphere. Has a great menu which has a great range of delicious authentic dishes. The hardest thing is to choose What to get as its all so wonderful!!!The service and staff are first class, being friendly , professional and welcoming.Fantastic restaurant experience!Well done!!!!

Fantastic food and is our go to take-out option. Especially love the Massaman curry lamb shanks. Service is always excellent, and food is always consistently great. Have not eaten-in yet so cannot comment on the dine-in service or restaurant atmosphere.

Tried out this place after some positive reviews and I wasn't disappointed with the mains. The Lamb Shanks was worth the long drive from across the town. I also had Fried Rice with Crab meat and Chicken with Cashew nuts. Be warned - Thai Hot really means it, the lamb shank was full of red chillies (which was perfect on a cold winter night). Service was not bad, the place was full when we went, but we were served in a timely manner. My only disappointment was the appetizers. The Moo Ping (Grilled tender pork marinated with Thai herbs on skewer) were undercooked and flavorless, it looked nothing like the pictures, while the Goong Hom Pha (prawn wrappers) and Chicken Tulip were nothing to write home about. I'd would definitely go there again (but will skip the appetizers).

I was so annoyed at one of the waitresses I just had to come write a review. The food was quite good by my recent experience was a bit disappointing. Luna Mezza next door was having a private party and there was loud music blasting from there. My family and I were seated at a table right by the loud music. I requested to be moved to another table where it was quieter and the waitress simply rudely stated 'You think you'll all fit on another table?'. She gave us 1 minute to decide what to order and when some of us hadn't decided, she started getting annoyed and kept asking if we decided yet. And finally when the food came, she kept rudely saying 'EXCUSE me' while we were moving some things on the table to make way for the food.

So in conclusion, food was good but service was dreadful.

I visited Marina Thai a few weeks ago with my family, and thought that it was one of the better Thai restaurants that I've eaten at in Auckland. The restaurant itself is a very relaxing place to eat - sunny, airy, spacious and overlooking Half Moon Bay. The service was quick and friendly, and the food arrived quite fast. There are a large number of options here, so it can be difficult to make a decision! I ended up choosing the goong sauce ma kham, and it was one of the best Thai dishes that I've had in a long time (and I eat a LOT of Thai food). The king prawns were very well-cooked and seasoned, and the sauce used was delicious. The food was also presented very well, which is uncommon at most Thai restaurants here. For desert, I ordered an affogato. The coffee itself was good, but there was a lot of plain cream on the top, and very little ice-cream as I had been expecting. Still, it was a good end to a wonderful meal. I consider this to be one of the best places to eat in the Bucklands Beach area, and will be returning often!

Update: I visited the restaurant once again about two weeks ago, this time for dinner. It was a dinner that I enjoyed enough to warrant bringing the rating up to a 4.5. I started my meal with a lychee juice, which was fresh and delicious. For our mains, we ordered the massaman lamb shank, the chicken red curry and the seafood pad char. In short, everything was delicious, but the massaman stood out in particular for me - the lamb was beautifully cooked, and the curry was lovely. For desert, I ordered a thapthim krop. This is one of my favourite Thai desserts, and I thought it was quite nice - a little more ice would have been welcome, as it never got quite as cold as I like, but definitely enjoyable nonetheless. Throughout dinner, the staff were very friendly, and service was fast and efficient. This visit has reaffirmed my belief that this is one of the best Thai restaurants in Auckland, and I'm glad that I live nearby!

Amazing food
Very good service
Quality is always the same no matter how busy it is
Reasonable prices
Been going there for the last 2 years at least once a month
I would say best Thai food in Auckland so far

I'm very disappointed to write such a bad review, but it has to be done. I ordered a simple meal and asked for it to be mild. When it came out, the meal was inedible, it burnt my mouth and made me cough it was so spicy. After approaching the waitress I let her know I wasn't happy and would like to order an alternative meal. After sitting back down she came to my table and started yelling at me in front of everyone in the restaurant saying that I should pay because I ate some of it. I ended up only paying for my replacement meal, but the whole experience was soured after the terrible service. I won't be returning, and a recommendation would be to take polite criticism on board and season the meals to specified level.

was good service and food except very little for what it cost, over priced for such small portions, venue was excellent with a pleasant atmosphere

I eat here regularly and am never disappointed. The portions are large and for the most part the staff are friendly and service is efficient. Even on very busy nights the meals are served promptly and I have never had any mistakes made.

The outlook over Half Moon Bay Marina is unique and adds to the pleasurable dining experience.

I will definitely return and recommend to others.

Booked in for dinner after our wedding on Easter Friday this year. The service and food was amazing!!! $36 for a set menu which included an entrée, 5 different mains and dessert. We all loved it soooo much. I think we might have to come back for our first wedding anniversary! Thanks so much :)

Fantastic friendly service, and tasty reasonably priced food. A perfect location for lunch or dinner. For dinner it pays to book as it very popular. I have never had a bad meal with the ingredients fresh and perfectly presented, dined 20+ times

Great service! Food was very nice , I had the seafood green curry and my wife had prawn pad thai as well as entrees. Service was fast and friendly, will definitely be coming back .

My family and I have always had a good experience (both service and food) with Marina Thai, yet today I really feel as though I should write a review. I am currently 8 months pregnant with gestational diabetes, which really limits the kind of food that I can eat out in restaurants. The staff at Marina Thai truly went out of their way tonight to accommodate my dietary needs and through communicating with me, they produced a really tasty black pepper beef with a few changes here and there. It was so nice to be able to enjoy a meal out, and their efforts were so appreciated. I had the best meal that I've had in a LONG time. Thank you so much Marina Thai, you really made my night and I'm so glad that you're our local!

I have dined here multiple times with friends for both lunch and dinner. This was the first Thai restaurant I went to, so at first I was very impressed with the food. But later on discovered that there are better Thai restaurants that serve better food and priced exactly the same. Not to mention that my friend and I both had diarrhea immediately upon getting home, we both had the tom yum noodles, chicken satay skewers, and the curry puffs. Therefore I will come back here in the future to get my green curry fix, and will definitelty recommend to others

7.2.2014.

Absolutely the best Thai Restaurant we have visited. In fact
we come here at least once a week, and sometimes twice.
Ambience, food and staff superb. A pleasure to come here
and enjoy sitting outside relaxing, and enjoying the food,
and can thoroughly recommend their desserts too!!
A big "thanks" to all the staff.

-Smith D.&J.-

14 of us had lunch there yesterday. We were able to choose from the dinner menu which was great. Overall, the meals were great and service was very good as well. Lovely views and good atmosphere.

Dined here last night stunning views but that is where it ends.
Chicken entree was so dry it was unpalatable , followed by a yellow curry with substandard meat and uncooked potatoes, I could make better at home. Back to Ben Jah Rong for me.
No problems with service.

We live locally and eat here quite often and have found the food very good in a great location with a view over the marina. The food can be ordered to suit your palate if you like spicy or very very spicy. We generally have pretty good service and have not had to wait very long even when they are busy. IMO the servings are a good size and we have always been served with a smile.
We bring friends, come with just the two of us or larger groups as well. Just made a booking again for tomorrow evening.

We had dinner here last friday night for a friends birthday. The restaurant was full of what looked to be happy customers, it was clean, tidy, had a good atmosphere and was nice and warm with gas heaters throughout. We chose the set menu B which was delicious and served promptly, we all loved the entree but we felt the servings of the 4 main dishes were a bit on the small side and the prawns where quite sparse. We all chose the fried banana for desert which was also delicious we thought we might end up with 1 huge fried banana on a plate but where pleasantly surprised when we received 4 nice little tasty bite sized fried banana with ice cream and a sweet sauce. Its also BYO with a $3 charge per bottle which we where happy about. What I would fault is the service, I felt the waitresses where very stone faced and not very friendly, they would put the dishes on the table then be gone so fast without a word it took awhile for us to find some to give us a jug of water which I feel should of been put on our table when we where seated without having to ask for it. Other than that good prices, nice location on the marina, plently of parking, overall a good experience.

I wouldn't go back to Marina Thai if I was paid to !
I chose this local restaurant to take my family to dinner for my birthday yesterday and I wish I hadn't.
The wait was terrible. After nearly 40 minutes we had to ask if we could order drinks and the rest of the night went on the same. Oh and I must mention that the restaurant only had about 6 -7 tables occupied so it wasn't like they were busy !
It all seemed too much trouble for the staff which by the way spent a lot of time at the counter doing what seemed like..very little.
I do wonder if the takeaway orders were taking priority?!
Even the food was average.....
No, I would definitely not recommend !

Visited this place after looking at the menu over the weekend. My husband and I took a couple of our closest friends who were visiting from the UK.

The service was good and very fast. We all had a main and they were all very good (maybe even the best Thai we have had). I don't normally like Thai food but i very happy we went and gave it a shot! Its also very friendly on your wallet :)

We all had a great night at Marina Thai and will be back again very soon with the kids and will be recommending it to all our friends and family.

One of the best Thai Restaurants I have been to, overlooking the water we had the duck curry (divine) and the sizzling beef both beautiful. Will definitely be back.

We went here for lunch & I give 4 stars for the food as it was delicious, but we had a few issues with a mix up with entrees & rather a long wait. Lovely setting & good pricing.

A very busy and popular place even early in the week. So the signs where good.

It turned out to be one of the best Thai meals that I have had in a long time. Being right on the waterfront I am sure helps but both the service and food were top notch.

The Chicken with Tom Kha Sauce was something different and worth a try along with the Massaman Lamb Shank.

Heaps of parking and worth a trip out to Half Moon Bay.

Lovely Thai food and a beautiful sea view, Marina Thai is such a great place to eat.

It's pretty easy to find food that's vegetarian friendly here, but that goes for a lot of Thai restaurants.

It's clean, well presented and has an elegant feel that can sometimes be hard to find in Asian restaurants. The food here is nice, big portions and there are lots of options. You will leave with a full belly and a smile.
Half moon bay has, for years, been one of my favourite places in Auckland, I just love the view, and Thai food is also one of my faves.
I suggest that if you like nice views and tasty Thai food, you should try this place.
