Review Hokkaido Restaurant & Bar - Auckland Central

Brent Mattock
We ordered the beef fillet, Isame and Tempura Vegetables The food was perfect possibly a little salty, definitely need to order rice with your meal depending on your dishes. Thanks Hokkaido !

Authentic Japanese kitchen. Very good quality/price ratio

One of my favorite Japanese restaurants in Auckland. Reasonable price and tasty food. While most of the dishes are very delicious, I wouldn’t recommend their karaage fried chicken. It was just not Japanese style at all.
Reuben Lankshear
We wanted to try an authentic style Japanese restaurant and we found it here. We order 6 plates of the menu including sushi, sashimi, squid, chicken, fried rice and seafood noodles. Very tasty, fresh and well presented. Recommend to anyone. Sorry no photos this time.

Our favourite Japanese restaurant in Auckland! The quality and taste is guaranteed. Prime beef is so succulent and the fried rice is full of flavour! The soft shell crab is to die for. Wonderful dining experience every time.

Nice atmosphere, great staff. We changed an order some minutes after ordering and they were happy to change it for us. Different menu for lunch and dinner(for example katsu curry not available at night) but still plenty of options to choose from. Fast service and good food.
Mia Acedilla
All of the stuff we ordered (and we have ordered and tried most of the items on the menu across different visits) are on point! Never had one that I didnt like or love! Will continue visiting Hokkaido. Pleasant atmosphere and great service!
Nicholas Knowlton
Good food, but a bit pricey. They really should clean the bathroom vent. Pretty gross.

the overall experience is fine, except the sashimi boat. all of us are waiting for the boat coming, and we confirmed with staff that the sashimi should come in a boat when we see the plate. that's abit sad. but still, all food here is amazing. sashimi are fresh, salmon miso pot is tasty, and bento r not bad, katsu curry rice is good. portion is slightly bigger than usual japanese restaurant.

Our family have been to Hokkaido many times. Their food is always good and the staff are accommodating. Nice views out over Stonefields & good parking right outside. Still going and it's still good!

Nice chilled atmosphere. Great service, fast to get our dishes put, beautiful food, lovely fresh seafood, yum!

I paid $22 I think for the sashimi don. With that price, I kinda expect more fish variety or bigger portion. Slightly disappointed with size. However, flavor is there, kids really enjoyed it.
Linda Lin
Lovely fresh ingredients. The miso salmon hotpot was especially delicious. Service was fast despite it being busy.

I ordered once from Hokkaido during lockdown and was not disappointed and thus was the first restaurant that I went back to after level 3 ended and I returned again just two weeks ago. A testimony to the general consistency and quality of the food here.

Liked:
1. Good variety on their menu with lots of photos to tempt you and help you make a choice and a decent drinks menu

2. Nice ambience, I liked the booths that they have and the fact that you can take a peek into the central kitchen just behind the till.

3. Authentic taste. We liked their sashimi which was generally very fresh, their tempura and their skewers. I’m a sukiyaki fan so I could not help but order one to share.

4. Parking seems tight out front of the restaurant but just turn around the back where space is ample and free.

Definitely one of my fav go tos in my hood.

Miso soup is normally included set menu.
We had to pay for miso soup $2.50 each.
Tony Ma
Fried rice is not bad. Reminds me of chicken fried rice from intermediate school. The soft shell crab smell was a bit too strong for me. Sashimi is nice but the wasabi provided isn’t the best quality. 4 dishes $70+. Relatively small portions for delivery.

There are other restaurants with better quality and better price. But overall good experience.
Felicia
The food and ambiance is very authentic. :) The food is tasty and we were very lucky to get a table with a booth without a booking. (Try turning up at 6pm) Admittedly we were a small group of four. Prime beef, salmon miso pot, chicken katsu, sashimi (15 pieces) and the grilled eggplant was the right amount of food for 4 adults.

Green tea ice cream is so good 👌

I would say the best Japanese restaurant in this part if the city by far. A broad authentic menu. Friendly staff. I always have Grilled Oysters, Saba, and Sashimi

Hokkaido, I didn’t managed to take many photos of the food here as we did have to wait a while for our food.

The kitchen had lost our order the first time round, after about 30-40 minutes of chatting we were wondering where our food and drinks were. Polite and apologetic our waiter came back and advise they had lost our order which was very unfortunate to hear. We reordered and it took about 15 minutes for our food to come out.

I ordered the sukiyaki, which is usually my favourite however the beef was tough and no rice with it so that was a separate order. Flavour was there but the beef was a let down.
We also order a while grilled squid which was grilled to perfection so that’s a yay. The Chan Chan yaki was good, salmon cooked well. The beef tongue was a bit tough, and we got free beef skewers. That too was tough.

Overall, I am a disappointed in my experience. There was some good dishes, not particularly sure if I’ll be back for more but if I’m the area I may consider retrying.
The staff are friendly, I just wondered what happened to our order. The restaurant was fairly busy, some reservations and walk ins so it shows how busy it can get, let’s hope my experience was a one off.

We went there with family friends ( 10pp) over Queen’s birthday and were completely blown away by the standard and variety of food. I should have taken more photos but once the orders started to arrive to the table, we were too busy eating and chatting.
We had the sashimi and sushi platter to start with which was fresh and beautifully arranged. The tempura was light and fluffy. The sukiyaki pot set was just perfect for the chilling night. We also had the fried rice and prime beef which took me back to my childhood memories.
We haven’t had such quality and variety Japanese food for ages. Will definitely be back soon to taste the rest of the menu!

Kid-friendly restaurant. Good customer service and value for money. Their food and service never disappoint. This is one of our family's fave restos.

Been here a few times. Great place to share meals, food is good , but nothing that really stood out for me. I like the ambience here and I guess I have to come back to try more of their menu..... hoping they extend their menu for more fuller meals as well

Lovely and friendly authentic Mt Wellington Japanese restaurant. We had a few dishes hat we’re all great, even the kids enjoyed their time and meal.

Had a pleasant experience here. We had the pork katsu, salmon yam yam grill and the eggplant, all of which were very good. The waitress was also very nice.

This place is sooooo good, such a hidden gem since it’s not in a central location. Their dishes are all excellent and very friendly staff. Highly recommend their katsu chicken (the best we’ve had in Auckland, no kidding), grilled dishes (especially mushroom), grilled whole squid and takoyaki balls. We’ve been back so many times and it’s so good every time. They also have BYO option which is a bonus!
Lilly M. Jane
The food was reasonable, we had this eel boxset and stir noodle and some other little dish. I ended up swallowing a small bone from eating a piece of the eel, so that really put a dent in my experience. Got the cocktail, wasn't my taste, quite on the bitter side of things. The pure green tea was really nice though... Also very important to book for a reservation before going or else you end up sitting in an uncomfortable area.

4.5/5 Taste
4.5/5 Display
4/5 Quantity
4.5/5 Customer Service

Marvellous Japanese Restaurant in Mt Wellington.
I’ve been going to this place since it opened.

I came in for Lunch and probably had one of the best Japanese lunch experience ever.
I usually come for dinner and their meals are not that big but lunch menu portion was so big I couldn’t believe it.
I honestly thought ordering two meals would not be big enough for two people but it sure was big enough.

I’m definitely going for lunch more often.
June Robinson
Our favourite local restaurant loved by all of our friends and family that have dined here. The lunchtime bento boxes are delicious especially the teriyaki chicken box. Must try dishes are the mushrooms, prawns wrapped in bacon, yum yum crab salad, miso eggplant and the chicken stirfry. It is BYO wine but the house wine is $8 per glass. Bookings recommended. Staff very friendly
LOONA
Went here for a birthday just before Christmas. They have a big menu containing many Japanese sharing dishes and platters to individual meals, we tried a bit of everything. We got a couple of bento boxes, a fish curry the portions were very generous and we got a few sides including the soft shell crab roll which was very nice. The staff were very nice but perhaps a little difficult to get their attention despite it not being very busy. It’s quite a narrow restaurant and although the booths/tables themselves are spacious enough I would not say this restaurants is very elderly or disabled friendly. Other than that very nice food and decent atmosphere.
Aimee.
We love coming here because there’s a huge variety of Japanese food to choose from. They have all kinds of hot pot, seafood, chicken dishes, salad, sushi and fried foods. I recommend the fried chicken and sushi.

We had a Christmas catchup here for lunch today, we order so many food and all of them are amazing, not just looking good as the menu but so yummy, I love especially the eggplant it melt in my mouth, will definitely come back for other yummy things! the service are so welcoming and stuff are happy and with smile all the time, make sure you are early so you can have the table by the window which has views. For me 5 out of 5!

We had takeaways from here tonight and have to say a 4/5! The service was amazing and the food even better! We had the chicken teriyaki Don 5/5, sashimi 4/5, rainbow roll 4/5 and the salmon teriyaki 4/5! Great place thank you!

Hokkaido prides itself in having food selections that are not usually available in other Japanese restaurants (i.e ox tongue, eel nigiri). However, I feel that the place is overrated since taste and ambience are pretty average. Moreover, food prices are tipping towards the expensive side.

Steamed Hams
I loved the presentation of the place, everything was incredibly clean and tidy. We sat in a nicely decorated cubicle. I had a teriyaki sushi roll, that was very fresh and was one of the best teriyaki sushi I've tried. I also had vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce, whipped cream and a chocolate wafer stick.

I remember this place used to be amazing a couple years ago, I think it's changed owners now?

Not sure if we came on a bad night or something, but our dining experience here doesn't match the below reviews. Seevice was great though, the staff were so friendly and accomdating as we wanted to switch from sitting at the bar to an actual table. The food, however, was something else...

The chicken karaage was undercooked, so the batter was floury and mushy. It also had no flavour to it besides the taste of flour.
The fried tofu also didn't have much taste. It was slightly fried, but the broth that it was sitting in was watery and didn't add much to the dish.
The beef teppanyaki was so chewy, but the flavour was okay.
The mussels we had were okay, but had way too much cheese. They were the best thing we had though, although I wouldn't probably order it again.

Late Dinner on a Friday night, 3 Adults and a Child
Value: 3/5

If you are willing to pay for quality than place is for you. But you will get your moneys worth.

Venue: 4/5

We came in after the dinner rush at around 8pm, got a table straight away. Seated near the back by the window. Also had a high chair set up for the baby. Ambiance was great. Love the look of the place too. Seating was really close together but you can expect that with most restaurants.

Service: 4/5

The ladies were service us were super attentive. Our food came our rather quickly which was a plus because when you are dinning with a child the wait can be an issue. At the end of the night the lady at the register gave us some crackers for the baby. Such lovely service.

Food: 4/5

The food was AMAZING. We ordered quite a bit and loved every one of things we order. One of my favorites was the Salmon Misoyaki. Will definitely be getting that again. We also ordered the Grilled Mussel Cheese Mayo, the Salmon YamYam grill the Rainbow Roll and the Sukiyaki Pot. All were very well prepared and presented and delish.

Will definitely be coming back here

Pleasant Japanese restaurant located in Mt Wellington.
We had a wide range of dishes.
Fried tofu: the flavour was nicely balanced and tofu was nicely fried.
Sashimi: the fish was relatively fresh so not much else to comment here.
Chicken yakitori: flavour was good and had a nice grilled flavour. Could be cooked for slightly longer on the grill to intensify the char.
Squid karaage: the squid could be fried a bit longer. It wasn't very crispy.
Eggplant: delicious, the sweetness from the miso and saltiness from the cheese was balanced perfectly.
Grilled saba: another standout dish. The saltiness of the fish was grilled to perfection. Another plus is that it had few bones.
Grilled squid: the subtle sweetness of the mayonnaise balanced with the squid beautifully.
Mixed sushi: classic flavours but the rice was on the moist side.
Mixed tempura: fried to perfection. Delicately crunchy.
Prawn fried rice: rice was fried well still offering a slight chew.

Service was great, the staff were friendly and always smiling.

If you are in the area or live close by, I highly recommend trying!

Food: 4/5
Service: 4/5
Environment: 4/5

Hokkaido seems to be always busy.
Why? Good food, well priced, efficient service.

We ordered quite a variety this time:
1. Sashimi (Small): 3/5
To us, the cut of any sashimi is very important. They somewhat can only be served if they are sliced to perfection. Presentation is crucial for sashimi but Hokkaido's presentation was a bit sad looking. Taste, pretty average. We're not overly blown by our first dish.

2. Fried tofu: 4/5
Great taste but again, presentation not the best. Tofu somewhat 'sinked' as they were put on top of each other at a hot temperature.

3. Karaage Chicken: 4/5
Portion and taste were good.

4. Salmon Miso Pot (with Udon): 5/5
Love this! Broth was delicious with heaps of ingredients in it.

5. Prawn Fried Rice: 5/5
To our surprise, their fried rice is one of the highlights of our meal.

Overall, very satisfying and will recommend if you're around the area and feel like having Japanese.

Good food, good service, good value and lovely ambience with the Japanese bamboo blinds and booths. We ordered beef tataki, prawn fried rice, chan chan yaki, fried tofu, green seasonal salad and grilled eggplant. They all were tasty, but the highlight for us was the prawn fried rice. Good fried rice is all about the texture - a perfect blend of rice, egg(s), the mix-ins, heat and sauce. They’ve hit the marks and that is fried rice the way it’s meant to be. :)
SJ
Sushi rolls are tasty, but slightly expensive. Staff are very friendly and meals were very authentic to Japan. Would recommend their takoyaki.

Wow! What a night we had! -- We went out to Hokkaido for my husband's birthday. We were absolutely floored by the food, service & ambiance! It takes quite a bit to make my top 10 restaurants and this one shot to the top. AMAZING Food, I had the sukiyaki pot and my husband had the chan chan yaki and we split the tempura & veg appetizer. I couldn't believe how reasonable it was! We DEFINITELY will be back soon!

Do yourself a favor GO VISIT HOKKAIDO ASAP your taste buds will thank you!

Pretty disappointed after seeing other reviews, I found it to be quite average. I ordered the terayaki chicken lunch box with a miso soup. I found the soup unusual tasting and different from every other miso I have had before. The teriyaki sauce on the chicken had a very light flavour and was kinda boring, the tempura vegetables needed some salt and the sauce for them barely tasted like anything. I liked how the seating was set up and found it quite cozy and liked the style of the restaurant. I also that the pricing was quite good

Absolutely delicious food with generous portions. They have a wide variety of choices on the menu to suit everyone's taste. I always leave this restaurant feeling satisfied and incredibly full. The presentation and complexity of flavours may not be towards the high end of things, however, this place is perfect for those just wanting authentic Japanese food.

Seating is comfortable with attentive staff. Price for everything is average and what you would expect.

Food 8/10
Service 7.5/10
Ambience 7.5/10
Price 7/10
I Like Food And I Don't Deny It
I am sure this place to some people is the best, and i agree on that in some areas. Unfortunately, as a first time diner of this place my experience was not great nor good. The food was good but what turned us off was the service, the service was really really disappointing.
Miss M
Lovely food, great value and prompt friendly service. I come here a lot and never have anything major to complain about. In this instance, the beef box was much more generous than the chicken and I think the broccoli salad could have been left to rest... tasted almost frozen cold. Otherwise all the flavors were delish!
Shannon Engel
I got the chicken udon noodle. Had about 3 bits of chicken and cost just under $15. Bland taste. Just tasted smokey from the grill. Filled up with cabbage and onion....wont be going back
Medium_Rare
Not my number one Japanese place and quite expensive for the area, I’ll admit I didn’t come here with the highest of expectations and it was to my surprise that those expectations were exceeded. We had the teriyaki beef bento set and the Hokkaido set. What really left an impression and amazed me was the quality of tuna, salmon, and sashimi. Fresh tasting, skilled slicing and well portioned, the sashimi here is fantastic and worth the price. The grilled chicken sushi which came along with the sashimi was also quite nice with a subtle grilled taste.

There were, however, three major disappointments, firstly the teriyaki beef was just plain boring. Essentially it was just meat covered in sauce which made it salty. There was a poor ratio of beef to vegetables which meant it looked more like a vegetable stir-fry. Secondly, the time of the food to come out was quite frustrating, to their benefit of the doubt they were also busy but I still expected better. Thirdly the tempura doesn’t contain any prawns, most Japanese places I go to the tempura always included at least one prawn tempura.

Overall my experience was better than expected, the ambiance is was fantastic. It was intimate yet you felt the place to be bustling due to the booth seats. I would highly recommend this place to sashimi lovers.

Showstopper: Sashimi

Overall Grade: B+

Came here after getting off the motorway on Waitangi Day for dinner.
You’re hit with it’s oriental furniture and table layout; it’s very Japanese. You have mini booths which are separated with bamboo blinds.

We got fresh oysters (6pc), Rainbow Roll, Yam Yam Salmon, Eggplant, Grilled Saba, Green Seasonal Salad, Seared Scotch Fillet, Takowasabi, and 2 beers between 2.

• Rainbow roll is largely portioned and fish is fresh; glutinous rice that isn’t dry like they can be and well-marinated with rice vinegar! Absolutely beautiful!
• Yam yam salmon oh myyyy be prepared for naughty things in the mouth because it’s an absolute shocker. Tender salmon cooked to perfection, covered by a thick creamy blanket of melted cheese. It’s a soft explosion in your mouth that will make you swoon.
• Eggplant is similar; perfectly cooked tender eggplant that pulls apart and melted on the tongue, sleeping under the blanket of melted cheese. Soooooo good!
• Grilled Saba was one of the most best fish dishes I’ve had! Incredibly juicy, succulent and barely any bones. It’s subtly seasoned but the smoky flavours push through.
• Seared scotch fillet was a liiiiittle bit on the dry side but still tender. Perhaps slightly lacking in seasoning, it wasn’t as enjoyable as I hoped. The stir fried vegetables it came with were nice!
• Takowasabi (raw squid) was so fresh and crunchy! A perfect dish to cleanse the palate either before or after! Only costs $5.90, highly recommended.
• Green Seasonal Salad was delicately drizzled with a sesame sauce and was full of flavour and almost “juicy”!
• Oysters were such a delight to eat! Fresh and the vinegar they gave elevated the freshness further. I tried some of the vinegar itself and oh my gosh I want to buy some! It almost tastes like vinegar, ever so slightly alcoholic but sweet. Beautifully matched.

It was one of our most satisfying meals we’ve had for both of us, and only set us back by $134.50 including 2 beers. Service was gentle, attentive and friendly. Hokkaido deserves more than what they’re currently rated and I would definitely come back!

Food: 10/10
Price: 10/10
Ambience: 10/10
Service: 10/10

Amazing food, attentive and great service, and lovely environment!

Would recommend booking in advance to secure yourself a seat as they operate at full capacity quite often.

Every single dish we ordered was even tastier than expected. Everything arrived super fast and all within a few minutes!

I like the atmosphere and decoration of the restaurant. There are authentic Japanese decorations (lanterns, artwork, music, plates).

Every dish was well-prepared with excellent attention to detail. The waitresses were attentive even during busy hours! Super polite and helpful.

Pricing is above average, but it’s definitely worth what you pay for. Portion sizes are larger than other Japanese restaurants too.

Presentation: 5/5
Taste: 5/5
Service: 4.5/5
Atmosphere: 4.5/5

Was hungry for Japanese Sashimi goodness...

Hunger satisfied....

Friendly service....

So many varieties too..

A wee bit bummed out there's no Ramen but it's okay

I’ve been here multiple times and have never been disappointed. The food I’ve tried is great and the service is excellent. It’s a small intimate restaurant, but I love the atmosphere and decor. Highly recommended.
Marissa Chellan
The chicken fried rice, chicken karaage and tempura are my go to. Good value for money, however the chicken teriyaki is quite a small portion for the price and is a little underwhelming. The booths are really cute, and the service is always friendly.
Joel Kerber
A bit overpriced for the bento box $20, which does not come with rice. Sushi rolls are small for $10.90. You might as well drive down the road to St Pierre's to get better value. There are better (and real) Japanese options nearer to Central Auckland.

Hokkaido will need to up their game. The reviews speaks for themselves (see below).

This place is busy and good if u do a reservation.

We do enjoy the food especially the squid.
The service is good and pleasant.

There deco is nice. No wow factor overall 😶 but great place for a good dinner of 4. 😊
TL;DR - Decidely-average suburban Japanese. Poorly trained waiter. Absolutely nothing to recommend as a reason to visit. If we need a local Japanese meal, we'll give our $$ to Kibo down the road in Panmure instead.

First time going to Hokkaido for my son's 16th bithday on a Tues night for a family meal of five of us. Location must be a factor in their favour as a number of tables were occupied. Our meal turned out to be a failure over the hour or so we were there.

Cons:

- drinks order not offered after the inital order. Empty drinks/cans left on the table for the entire meal.

- main for birthday boy never turned up (still being prepared?).

- second main for child wrong. Asked for plain sushi roll with salmon only and received the stock menu listing instead. Unhappy child the end result.

- Rice for third main only turned up 15mins after the teriyaki chicken main once we asked where it was.

- $45 sashimi platter - a usual fav of myself and my wife - was a disappointment. Large chunks (NOT fine slices) of fish of not the greatest freshness.

Pros:

- Our table down the back had a lovely view of the former Winstone's quarry.

Won't be going back and was happy to tell them that so perhaps they'll sort themselves out.

Hokkaido is one of our family's favourite restaurant. Excellent and friendly staff, nice ambience and great food. We have been dining here for a couple of years now and also celebrated special occasions with family as well. We have tried almost 95% of their dishes from the menu. Yesterday, we had Salmon roll, Prawn Fried rice, chicken teriyaki, salmon misoyaki, takoyaki, squid karaage and eggplant with chicken mince. When we dine on our birthdays, they never fail to sing and give us a treat - vanilla ice cream with banana fritters. We just love this restaurant.
TK Kim
Okay food, okay service, not so okay price. Nothing to die for. Would visit this place again only if all the other japanese restaurants magically disappear and this is the only joint that sells sashimi and such.
I_like_pickles
Lunch bento sets are ok priced. Not expensive but not the cheapest either. The bento has all your bento essentials like tempura, sushi and the main meat. Food is good. Your usual Japanese. Nothing spectacular or special.

The decor is quite nice. I always like the cultural touches in any cuisines that show off the root of their cuisine's culture.
Ravneil Chandra
okay atmosphere and okay seating. But food is not worth the price. We found it really expensive in comparison to other Japanese restaurants. Food taste was okay. Also the food ordered together did not arrive together. Instead it came 15 to 20min later. No complementary tea or bottle water etc. Not planning to go there again.
Dimitrios Konstantopoulos
We did visit the place mostly because of the great reviews and to be honest we left quite dissapointed.
The food is just ok but nothing to die for.

We tried all the seafood plates. Squid, oysters, scallops and a vegetarian eggplant.
Everything was average expect from the scallops that were bad.
The service was ok but we had to ask for water 3 or 4 times.
A bit pricey but i would not mind if the food was better.
Something must have changed here, i cannot understand the previous feedback...

Starting to get a little peeved off with this place. Please can ZOMATO Manager find out the correct opening times. We turned up today at 2.19pm for lunch and were told their last lunch order can be placed at 2.15pm. Their online advertising states they are open for lunch until 2.30pm

Love the food, especially fish taksut, salmon box, fried tofu, bacon and prawn BBQ . Now visit the place once every two weeks. Waitresses are friendly.
Stephy_NakiGirl
Consistently good service with food made fresh to order. Tried the teriyaki beef lunch box which was very reasonably priced. Again everything freshly prepared not reheated like some places do.
A good range of small dishes too.
They have NZ & imported beers as well as a good range of sake & plum wine

Pretty close to the food we had in Japan. Great menu with a large variety of options. Prompt, attentive and friendly service Couldn't find any fault really.
Very affordable.
Haven't been to this outlet for a while, decided to come back to have dinner last night.

Made a reservation just before we arrived. However, the table wasn't ready we arrived. So a little point deducted for that.

While we were there, it was super busy. Staff had tried their best to cater everybody. Point added for that.

Foodwise. For me, it had slipped a bit. I felt the quality of food was much better before than this time. For this occasion, my wfe and I both agreed that there are other Japanese restaurants have much better quality than this outlet (like the ones in St. Heliers and Parnell).

Anyway, our experience last night wasn't too bad. We may come back again but it won't be our first choice.

I have selected this restaurant based on the 4.0 grade on Zomato, some passionate reviews saying it's amazing.

For starters, they gave us a table, took the order for drinks and only when we ordered the food they let us know they had NO SALMON! So I say I'll pay for the drinks and leave, and magically now there's salmon "just for me".

The tuna roll covered in green tea powder was probably the worst piece of sushi I've ever had. The rolls are also too big.

The nigiri was average, the rice was too compact and the fish wasn't very fresh. But the price was similar to the great japanese restaurants in Auckland.

The tempura was oily, not crunchy.

Maybe I was unlucky, but I'm not coming back.
Brittany McCrystal
Been here a lot of times for about 2 years , it used to be a lot better, the squid use to be the best thing on the menu but they have changed the batter and it is now has no taste and isn't very fresh, the staff are super friendly however and the chicken dishes are pretty good.
Andrean
The food is okay (average) but the staff is super friendly and helpful.
If I can choose, probably this place will not be my first preference if I want to have some Japanese food.
Malia
Food was served to us in less than 30 mins in a busy lunch hour. We've been here a couple of times now. Celebrated a friends birthday as well. They gave free dessert for him. It was a good experience .

Have come here a few times , If you know what your ordering and are really experienced in Japanese style food you'll get a. Pretty reasonable feed .
Quite good for a nice fast tasty lunch
Good staff and service
Cesar Luis
This has been a good Japanese restaurant for lunch for a while, consistent, well priced and nice food, service is always good and bento boxes are the way to go

A nice tiny restaurant with friendly and smiley staff. We ordered soft shell crab, mixed rolls, salmon avocado rolls, grilled brinjal, and sesame ice cream.

The sushi rolls are of good sizes and i like the fact that the rice wasn't too sweet. There was a generous amount of cheese on the brinjal, which i think overwhelms the miso sweetness by just a tiny bit. The soft shell crab and brinjal was served hot so that's appreciated. Soft shell crab has a very good crunch to it and a good balance of flavors.

We ended the lovely evening with an awesome sesame ice cream. There's a strong flavour of sesame and there is something inside the ice cream that adds texture to the whole dessert but i have no idea what that might be. The ice cream wasn't too sweet either, so i really loved it.

There are plenty of parking lots so parking is not a problem. We used our entertainment book and got a 25% discount.

Average at best. Came here once a few years ago and from what I could remember it was average. So I decided to come again last week to give it another go. Yup, still average.

We ordered the spicy pork bento box and the teriyaki beef. Both were below average in terms of flavour especially the pork. The only redeeming thing that I liked were the tempura. The prices were also pretty steep for what we got comparing to other Japanese restaurants. Service was pretty good however.

Overall, not my favourite Japanese restaurant. Probably wouldn't be returning.

Bit cramped and crowded when very busy, but the staff were friendly and attentive and the food was delicious. Lovely big menu and we enjoyed everything we ate. We will definitely be back, perhaps off peak :)

We haven't eaten the whole day, so feel quite famished by 2:30pm. We were around the area and decided to have Jap for a super late lunch. We got there just before kitchen closed at 3pm, seated by the window overlooking the Stonefields quarry. We ordered Beef Sukuyaki set (note udon extra $2.50), Salmon bento set (note rice extra $2) and chicken karaage. The food was quite nice and such a generous portion (as we were hungry, I think at this stage everything decent taste good!). Safe to say that was our meal for the whole day, we were left satisfied and full by end of it. Bill came to $50.

Stopped by for dinner. Was going for the steak but had a change of heart and went for Asian cuisine instead. Nice setup. Polite staff that explains what the dishes are. We had sushi rolls. Cheese salmon and udon noodles. The cheese salmon was a pleasant surprise. And so were the noodles. Shame it took so long to get the noodles. I was the last one eating while everyone else stared at me 😩. The food is nice and fresh. Karage chicken were disappointing to say the least. No flavour at all. Fried chicken from a take away shop is better. It's a little pricey for what it is. Hence the lower rating. Will go back for more though just cause it's right around the corner from work and home

I have been here twice now and would definitely return! The atmosphere is fantastic as they have booths; which makes the dining experience more private.
The service is great and the food is excellent!
My favourites are the broccoli and octopus balls. A bonus is this place is BYO

Gotta try Hokkaido out! They never let me down with all the yummy dishes and great customer service:) Even when they are very busy food comes out very quick!

Great ambience, great waitstaff and most importantly delicious food. Each n every booth is decorated differently but tastefully. The food is served up to be visually pleasing too. An overall enjoyable experience.

This place is fantastic! It has wonderful, friendly staff, a relaxed atmosphere and the food is great value. We came early, however the restaurant started filling up quickly and the staff handled the business well. Will definitely come back!

Turned up here recently for a late-ish lunch. Ordered a bunch of things. Pork, prawn tempura, salad, beers.
Good fast service. Good tasty food. Clean and tidy restaurant. Fairly priced. Nothing special that makes it stand out as a destination though.
Las Akurugoda
Great place to have lunch or dinner. Seatings are very nice and always a good time with few friends sharing few plates of Japanese food. I love the seafood here, specially the flounder and oysters

Hokkaido is conveniently located to our house, so we do frequent alot. It's reasonably priced, the food is pretty consistent and service is always good. Took my in laws for their first sushi experience- Mother in law isn't a big fan of raw fish but we have converted Father in law. If you're in the area, I'd recommend heading to Hokkaido and order the salmon sushi or grilled squid.
Karen
Was in the mood for Japanese food and stumbled upon this place. The dinner menu is reasonably priced however I was hoping for more of a set meal rather than sides.

I ended up getting the Seaweed Chatsuke and my friend got the Chan Chan Yaki, plus Takoyaki to share.
We both really enjoyed our food, the service was friendly and speedy.

I also like how their drinks menu has little descriptors of all the different types of specialty drinks they have on offer. I got a plum wine and I was pleasantly surprised at how tasty it was.

Would come back, probably not for a full on meal but with a group to nip and share at dishes.
Tania Li
Great service, food came so quickly and was full of flavour! Very reasonable pricing and good to go to with your family or just a quick lunch during your work break :)
Neel Boppana
Great ambiance and good food! Had Sashimi don, Sushi rolls and other stuff can't remember but it was delicious! Next time visit for sure. Friendly staff here and is always a bonus!

We had a very pleasant experience when dining at Hokkaido tonight .

We ordered Sashimi, beef tataki, mix sushi, sukiyaki pot, fried noodle, sizzling beef and grilled whole squid. All our dishes were nicely presented and cooked nicely!

The fish was so fresh and nicely cut. The beef was melt in your mouth. The squid was cooked just right with yummy dressing. The fried noodles was smoky and tasty. Can't fault anything at all!

Would love to go back again !
I had been lured to come to this Japanese restaurant and I had an exceptionally good time.

The restaurant looked very authentic and pretty. I could tell that each cubical had a different chandelier which I found quite nice. The waitresses had such a great eye for people who hadn't been serviced or looked like they needed help. They were very friendly and had great hospitality skills.

The food was very tasty. I had got the marinaded chicken with a bowl of rice, which came with coleslaw on the side. And my partner got the teriyaki chicken with a side of rice. My dish was a reasonable size but was very very tasty. Since it was so tasty, I really wish they had given me a bigger portion as I was forced to finish the bowl of rice just to fill me up. The price for this meal all together was okay.

The teriyaki chicken was a, um, let down. As it was tasty, I swear I could just buy the same marinade at countdown and make double the size for half the price. The pricing for this was wayyyyyyy unnecessary and didnt fill any gap for my hungry boyfriend and left me thinking that, that was a waste of $25 for that meal.

As the hospitality and food was good, the annoying thing is that the food is greatly overpriced and would probably only fill yourself up if you payed $50 for yourself. We both left happy yet our wallets didnt, definitely for the amount of food we had actually gotten.

Will only come back here if I have a spare $60 in my pocket to pay for half portioned food.
Athena
Everything in this place is awesome :) the ambience, the food, the service. Highly recommend the sushi and their beef sizzling plate! Great options to share and some bigger portion plates aa well.

Had a quick lunch here with colleages a few weeks ago. I had karage chicken with miso and rice. Very satisfied afterwards. Great location that connects to the highway to my company.
Catherine Spitzbart
Really nice resturaunt, though a bit expensive for lunch options. I've had most of their sashimi, their eel, and their katsu don. All very well portioned, the fish was very fresh tasting.

While they do present things well, I highly recommend eating in. Really nice atmosphere, though small, the booths are surprisngly private feeling. Good service, attentive, and always happy.

Very wide menu selections, and nice beer selection.

If you're looking for an authentic japanese dining experience then this is the place for you -- food-wise and ambiance-wise.

Staff were friendly and pleasant to deal with. The price is quite reasonable. However, I think the portion is too small. There are also plenty of food and drinks to choose from.

Would definitely come back!
Chloe-Mae
Had take always from here a couple of times friendly staff Spot take away was served up In tidy containers-it's rare to find Japanese that does take always and presents nicely/ will be back

This place serves similar food to Nishiki. The restaurant is a lot smaller. Looking at the menu the prices seem to be higher than Nishiki and less choices. We ordered some hot pots and side dishes. The hot pot was delicious and the flavour was good. Beef skewer had nice sauce. The staff was very friendly and attentive.
Annette Wong
I came here with my partner for dinner. We got a few plates of mixed sashimi (white fish, tuna and salmon)

They were served beautifully and very fresh

I ordered a bowl of rice which, at an eyeball would be around 80-100g of rice.

Perfect for those watching their macros

Yoyo
Our favourite place to eat. Everytime we have dinner here we leave with a smile on our face. Staff are friendly and food exceptional. The squid is devine.

Walked in for 2 and got a seat right before the bookings. I love the small plates and the fresh ingredients. Light and crispy vege tempura was great and I can fully recommend the beef tataki - melts in your mouth!
SS
Hidden gem! A friend and I visited a couple of days ago and it was fantastic. They managed to find us a table immediately despite being a Sunday with no booking ;)

We ordered the chan chan yaki, grilled original cheese eggplant, the chicken karaage and the squid karaage. It was a good amount of dishes between two people. The chan chan yaki I thought was a tad overpriced as it was 70% cabbage, 15% onion and 15% carrot, 10% salmon. Was still quite tasty though. Standout dishes would definitely have to be the karaage chicken and the grilled eggplant. I'm a total sucker for fresh juicy fried chicken and that's all I need to say. As for the eggplant, it was totally different to anything I've ever had. It was cheesy and the miso paste was perfect with the texture of the eggplant. Perfectly grilled!!!

I absolutely love the booth seating area and love love love the pictures on the menu. They're actually so helpful ;) service was great! I can't wait to come back and try some more dishes!!!!
Benedict Uy
Stopped by for lunch. We ordered a dish each and a few to share.

I ordered the sukiyaki and was able to choose between rice or udon. We shared some of the sushi and the salmon with yum yum. The food was all quite good. Portions were decent. The service was also good.

Nice place to order a bunch of things to share but be wary because it does all add up.
Laura Hunt
Based in Mt Wellington it's very conveniently located for travelling from the eastern suburbs. The times I have visited the service has been super quick and friendly.

The food is seriously to die for. What I love the most is that you can get a range of different sharing plates, so there's something for everyone. From what I've tried I can highly recommend the karaage chicken as well as any of the chicken and salmon dishes... But everything is good! It's perfect for any occasion, whether it's a date or a group outing... AND it's reasonably priced. An all round winner for me!

Been three years since my last visit. Not sure why as I have enjoyed this resturant everytime. Seating can be difficult as it grew popular. Staff are fantastic and smart waiting staff clearly well trained and considerate clearing any finished plates from booths to give you more table space.
I had my eel. I normally order eel sushi but went for the dinner box with two strips of eel 4/5. Prawn fried rice was a favourite so piggy ordered that. 4/5. Seafood and salmon broth 4/5 a deep fried soft crab didn't dominate the batter coating not helped by a strong sauce. 3.5/5. Miso was very good 5/5. Everything was a really good standard food arrived quickly and oerfect venue. Had it a ultimate wow factor or say a signature dish it would have scored 5.
No kids menu not particularly child friendly, no high chair offered as this would block the serving aisle. 2/5
Excellent atmosphere good food with average price. Great customer service and staff are very helpful. The place is packed we didnt have a reservation but still managed to get a spot. Vibe is nice and cosy

This is our go-to place for Japanese cuisine. My all-time favourite food is Salmon and the sashimi is always good. First time I tried eggplant was here and it was yummy. My partner and many of my friends I have introduced to Hokkaido have tried so many dishes and haven't come across anything that has left us unsatisfied. It is affordable and the service is always welcoming and friendly.
Kristi Tansilia
Me and my husband didn't expect much the first time we ate here, but now It's been our 3rd visits (in a month) there! we've been trying several menus and I personally love their sashimi and sushi rolls! The sashimi just tastes so soft and juicy in your mouth! and a plus too for the people who work there, you guys are doing a great job :D

This place is tastefully decorated inside despite it being in a rather average looking block of shops, the serving sizes are really good and it's very cosy and warm which was a relief from the chilly air outside. I ordered the Salmon Miso Pot which was exactly what was needed on such a cold day, there was quite a mix of vegetables which made it a very healthy choice. You can add on udon to make it more filling for an extra $4 which is kind of expensive really. My dining companion ordered a donburi (can't remember which one) and we were both very full and satisfied afterward. It's just a little bit more pricier than other japanese places but serving sizes are definitely satisfactory and there's quite a range of options here to suit everyone's taste buds!

Sarah Reynolds #challenge

Always come here for lunch. Such great value for money and absolutely delicious. The service is always very good, the people are friendly, the restaurant has a lovely atmosphere, and the food is always awesome. Highly recommend the beef Hotpots!!

This is a cute little place with very friendly staff! Friends and I always go for lunch and the lunch boxes are perfect for a Friday treat!

I've been at Hokkaido many times before and I had the best experience this weekend.

It was a shared dinner, so my friends(all foodies) & I made quite a lot of orders - green salad, mixed rolls, sashimi, scallop Katsu, squid karaage, tuna tataki, salmon head, mushroom yakitori, vegetable fried rice, together with green tea. Scallop Katsu was breaded-fried; mixed rolls came with 3 different fishes; tuna tataki was served lightly seared & tasted well with the provided vinegar; 4 mushrooms grilled on 2 skewers were lovely (& we made a second order); green salad & salmon head were average; squid karaage was bland, while fried rice was the best. (I always believe that fried rice is a perfect judge on whether a chef is good or bad, if fried rice is on the menu.) Needless to say, Japanese plating can always be trusted. We thought we could finish our dinner with some desserts, but we were too full to take in anymore. (Food - 4.5/5; Service - 4/5; Ambience - 3.5/5)

N.B. My 5th photo is one with all 3 different rolls from the mixed rolls in photo 4.

Hokkaido struggles somewhat to contend with other Japanese restaurants. Not necessarily because they're that terrible, but partly because Japanese food is so often such high quality, operating a Japanese eatery it's like competing in the marathon at an Olympic level.

A group of seven of us feasted on 2 rounds of food and a few rounds of sake. The bill came to $66 per person, arguably a little steep.

Pork belly: 4/5
Pork katsu: 3/5
Chicken katsu: 3/5
Grilled Saba: 3/5
Salmon head & wing: 3/5
Soft shell crab: 3/5
Edamame: 3/5
Prawn tempura: 3/5
Squid karage: 1/5 (batter was terrible)
Yaki onigiri: 2.5/5
Takowasabi: 5/5
Eggplant: 3.5/5
Grilled oyster: 3/5
Grilled zucchini: 2/5

Overall: 3/5

Probably wouldn't go back again, just because there are so many other Japanese restaurants to try and others I've been to before that are better.

I been there twice for past two weeks, try lunch menu earlier week and yesterday dinner attending a friend birthday. Food was great and sashimi is fresh! But, need to order a couple of dish in order to be feeling full as the dishes rather small. We order a big variety of food after first round of order as the boys is still hungry and basically almost everything from the menu. At the end of dinner for 7 people out bill cost us around $470, it's quite pricey but we did enjoy the food. The service was just ok, it's rather hard to get hold or attention of the waitress as we are sitting at the backend and they rarely walk over and we have to keep waiting for them to come over to fill up our hot water for green tea and any of our extra request. They should have those bell on every table just like those Korean restaurant.
Lisa Helmling
Great! Table for 6, amazing spread of food. Loved it! Service great, food amazing. I would totally recommend for small plates of Japanese greatness!

I come here quite often for dinner. Affordable price +!good service. The grilled mussel cheese Mayo was very yummy😋 Sukiyaki & Salmon hot pots were perfect choices for such a cold night. Edamame beans was kind of cold. This place is more like a Chinese restaurant ~ to me ..

Yum!

Did not realise there was such a wonderful Japanese restaurant in Ellerslie before last week when I visited.

We ordered 2 main dishes and a spider roll for dinner. The food came out extremely quick, very well presented and most importantly, DELICIOUS!

I cannot wait to go back to try more things off their menu!
Steph Wells
Amazing service and wonderful food. Always fresh and flavorsome. My favorite dish is the grilled Oysters. The staff are friendly and helpful, great place for date night.
Sheree Buttery
My husband and i had our very first date here. Beautifully presented authentic food. The variety and portion sizes are great for sharing and the experience will make you go back again.
HJ
A nice Japanese place to go for a date or something nicer than a normal eat, there is nice views at the end of the room. The food was good and was served to us quiet promptly. The seasonal salad would be a recommendation for a healthy option and the fried tofu and eggplant is good for vege lovers. Small portions but decent prices, we ordered 4 dishes (our bill total - $40) between the two of us which was just right for dinner. Staff were friendly and provided good service
Aaron
I would put Hokkaido as the best value Japanese restaurant on the east side. Lots of choice on the menu.. plum wine, hot sake.. the works. This is the best restaurant on the Lunn Ave strip. Good service.
Erin Hall
Really accommodating staff, really yummy food. I'm basically addicted to Hokkaido it's great. It's generally always full so I don't think it's a secret. If you can get a seat down the back the quarry looks lovely after dark.
Sophia O-W
Went here for lunch with a friend. On arrival we were greeted nicely and seated in a booth of choice. The waitress was very nice, however there was only one serving the whole restaurant so it was a tad slow. We ordered a teriyaki beef lunch box and don, some edemame beans, beef tataki, and miso which came $1 with each meal. The meals came out relatively quickly, each meal being very good and flavoursome. Presentation of the food was very nice, especially the tataki. Generally the menu is relatively expensive for Japanese, but it makes up for that through the portion sizes.
Sylvielle
As you enter, you are greeted by friendly staff and led to the seat right away.

Initially my expectation of the place wasn't too high as I understood this shop to be owned and operated by a non-Japanese, which I believe is the main problem for those restaurants for losing its authenticity. I could also see that the staff were trained to stick to speaking basic Japanese out loud whenever someone comes in and goes.

The waitress who took our order was friendly and depite the fact that I was being picky with my order, the exact dish the way I've ordered was placed in front of me at one go and that doesn't happen everyday at all of the places that we go to so I was pleased.

Overall, the service is good and so are their food. I will definitely visit again.
FlyingMonkey
I was here with my friends, and we all enjoyed the food very much. The presentation was beautiful, and the set lunches were very filling. The sukiyaki pot set stood out the most. It was presented in a metal bow on top of a gas burner with raw ingredients inside such as pork mushrooms, other veges and booth. the idea is that the food is cooked fresh right in front of you. on the side with the set there is a salad, and miso soup. we had a curry chicken, which was also very nice japanese curry. the sushi was on the side, i didnt eat much of it coz i was full from my own meal, but it is good quality. the service was A+, polite and helpful. Good restaurant atmosphere. I would definitely return and hungry for more Japanese food.
Megan Stericker
Dishes mainly for sharing. Great variation of sharing platters. Good service, reasonable price. The donburi however was too eggy for my liking. Just chicken egg and rice, I expected more veges and more sauce. But the sharing dishes are yum.
Sam H
Me and my family a regulars here and the food is well priced and yummy but on our last visit we revived terrible customer service they were very rude my friend had asked for chicken to be added in her meal and the lady actually laughed and was quite rude about her asking. one thing I can't stand is bad customer service. it's quite unfortunate because they have lost good customers.
Kerensa Robertson
I love this place, and the only thing I miss about my last home was how close it was to Hokkaido! The food is all amAzing, and I have never had anything I didn't like. I personally love their prawn sushi roll and gyoza cheese balls more than anything!
Donna Thompson
I'm actually surprised that several people have written poor reviews.

We went tonight for the first time. Mainly for the yakatori. Between the two of us we ordered 6 dishes. These aren't massive portions, but both of us feel satisfied after our meal.
We didn't think the prices were too bad. I know there are other places around where things are cheaper.
The staff were friendly and accomodating, although the only negative I have is that it felt very unorganised with waitresses literally running back and forth. Maybe short staffed, I'm not sure. Just felt a bit hectic where we were as we were right by the kitchen.

It's not an overly spacious place, but the meal were still enjoyable.
Kristina
We have been to Hokkaido 4 times now and it started off great but unfortunately has gone severely downhill. The chicken teryaki sticks were burnt and inedible. The Takoyaki was doughy, the sashimi wasn't great quality and the price was a rip off. The miso and steamed combo rice were the only redeeming features. We have tried supporting this place as we need a good local Japanese in the area but I am sorry Hokkaido you have lost us and our friends as customers.
Alan Parker
After reading all the reviews I was surprised to see some customers have had a bad experience. Obviously the owners have had a read as well and have taken in the criticism and remedied the problems encountered by diners. I have had several meals of all types and could not fault the food or the service. I recently took a Japanese friend who is reluctant to try food that is not prepared by ethnic chefs, they were so impressed that several photos were taken of the food presented to us. This place now has fans in Japan who will no doubt visit this restaurant when in N.Z.
Lee V
Been here a couple of times and so far everything i've tasted has been really good. The cheesy salmon and teriyaki chicken are particular favourites.
The staff are always friendly and I like the seating booths. Although it might be annoying for big groups of people.
We are now regulars here and have never left disappointed.
Alysha Bryan
Didn't enjoy the food and thought it was over priced! I liked the atmosphere in the restaurant but I wouldn't go back.
M Y
Wouldn't go back nor recommend to anyone...

Food was awful.. Had to wait ages for our food, and service was bad. There are tonnes of much better Japanese restaurants in Auckland, wouldn't waste my money eating here.
Jamie Blackman
We've been here once and it was godawful.

Tuna sashimi arrived FROZEN, with huge ice crystals in it, and coloured GREY (it should be red). Tako Yaki was just disgusting--incredibly greasy, as if it hadn't been drained after it came out of the fryer and all oozing, squirting mayonnaise and no octopus--I couldn't even finish one, and I adore Takoyaki.

Staff make a show of speaking Japanese when you enter; I don't think they are, or at least don't think the ones I spoke to are. Obviously it shouldn't matter (and anyone who eats Japanese food in Auckland probably eats lots of fantastic Japanese food made by non-Japanese business owners), but in this particular case it felt deceptive and a bit cartoonish to us, particularly when I asked for shochu and was brought sake, and then was told that the sake was shochu. It's too bad they don't know the difference, but I do, and I won't be going back.

Any mall foodcourt Japanese is better than this place.
Charlie Wu
I've been here a few times and every time it has been a great experience. The staff are incredibly polite. The food is good. What more could you ask for? It's definitely worth a visit. Would go again.
Emma
After being completely ignored at another restaurant up the road, we walked down to Haikkado. This place was a breath of fresh air! The service was excellent, our chirpy waitress turned our night into an awesome experience. The food was just as amazing! Very tasty and well presented.
Hayden
I visited the restaurant on numerous occasions but recently I realised that the price had gone up quite a bit and the food portion I thought decreased. The quality of the food remained the same though...
RM
We had an another excellent meal here. Flounder was absolutely delicious and beef and prawns and bacon. This time the staff were very efficient and attentive to our needs.
Will be back soon. Keep it up!
Dave
I come here all the time for lunch when in Auckland.
I always find the food to be good, fresh fish sashimi and delightful service.
They also have another restaurant - Oedo in Greenlane. I go there for evening meals sometimes.
Both are good. they look after me well and I enjoy their pleasant friendly approach and the food.
In fact the reason I am writing this review is because I was looking them up to make a reservation for tomorrow when I will be in the area.
Kay
Been here many times now and always a good meal at a reasonable price. Service can be hit and miss but in my experience not so bad that it would affect the evening. Great for mid-week dining when you can't be bothered cooking. You need to be aware that like many Japanese restaurants the food comes as it is made ie not all at the same time. Highly recommend sharing dishes between your party as this will mean you can taste more and share food without one person going hungry while they wait :)
Peter Sefton
Four of us went there tonight 28 Oct 11. Two of our main courses (Crumbed Flounder and Tempura Prawns) were not available but they did not even bother to come back to the table to tell us. So two of us had to sit there with no dinner. What a disaster! And this was after we had double checked our order. Having said that, the partial orders delivered were fine but I am now very upset with them and they have dropped from being a " regular favourite" to a "poor service" category. The manageress on duty did apologise and adjust the account but that's no substitute for not training your staff to care for customers. Shame on you Hokkaido.

Went back again more recently (April 2012) with friends and received much improved service plus excellent food so have now upped them to three stars and will return again.
Shenaye
My partner and I come here all the time, it's awesome food and friendly staff are very welcoming. We turned up with out bookings a few times and have had no trouble getting in even if we had to wait five or ten minutes for them to set up - it's well worth the wait!! Price is average but I am happy to pay it as we enjoy it so much. My mother and her partner now eat there regularly and I also took a girlfriend there today for lunch and she loved it. Previous comments must have ordered the wrong thing because I have never been disappointed here!!

First time we went without booking on a Friday or Saturday night we got turned away which is fare enough. We tried again on a non weekend night without booking, they took us to a table right beside the order table. The place is long and tiny, feel very squeeze and not comfortable. The manager took a while to come to our table to get the order, we didn't get any drinks just want tea - it turns out you need to pay extra for it!! The food portion is very very small, 2 of us ordered 6 dishes and we are still hungry!! The worst thing is we found a hair in the dish which is disgusting. The manager offered us a replacement which we turned down as we had enough of the food. We went to pay, she offered 15% off - I checked on the Entertainment book they could offer 25%, don't know why she could not offer us that. The thing is it is a Japanese cuisine owned by a Chinese, I don't think the food is nice and we will not go back again for sure!!
Dannii Yoohx
Not such a good experience. the first bad thing that happened was when we booked our table and it took them about 5 minutes to give us our table. we ended up getting a good table so it was okay but the table was not wiped properly and was sticky which made it uncomfortable for me and my family. then when we received our menus and decided what we were going to get, it took really long for the waitress to come and write down what we were getting. she had also ordered someone else's food before ours and they had come later than us! so after she got our food ordered, the food was such a LONG wait and it was such a little amount and the money was definitely not worth it. the waiters were nice and the room was nicely decorated. that was pretty much the only credit i would give them. the food was average, i could have made food better and when i was eating some salmon, i couldnt even eat it, it was so hard to chew on. this is one of the worst dining experiences i have ever had.
Sally Laurie
Loved it!!! great atmosphere, friendly staff & best off all a great variety of delicious food at great prices. I live in Papakura & don't mind travelling all the way to Mt Wellington for a meal here. Am booked in for tomorrow night & can't wait!

Lovely fresh food, great range, great tastes. What a pleasure it was to eat here.

Celebrated my birthday here! it's such a lovely little place - gr8 food and the staff are so friendly. Would definitely go there again - highly recommended :-)
Nicky
This is our favourite Japanese place to go! They have booths down the back of the restaurant which fit six people perfectly. They have friendly staff and the food is delicious. I would highly recommend Hokkaido if you want fantastic Japanese.
Rice & Kai
This review is based on the lunch menu at Hokkaido - I haven't been here for dinner in a long time. The lunch menu is very reasonably priced and has a good range, including sashimi, donburi, tempura and sushi. My personal favourite is the chicken karaage - I often try this dish at different Japanese restaurants and still find myself coming back to this one. It's juicy and crispy and they're generous with the yum yum sauce! I've usually experienced friendly and attentive service here too. One of the better places to eat along Lunn Avenue in my opinion.
