Review The Mariner Fish And Chips - Auckland Central

Jessica Wu
I had to try their crayfish roll when it was available. It was beautifully fried, well presented and a good balance in the brioche roll. Good flavors, juicy cray, soft roll. A pity it was only for a limited time. Fries good as usual, best around.

The only Auckland fish and chip shop that actually knows what proper chips are. You will pay more for the chips here than other places, but the higher price is worthwhile for the far superior quality than other fish and chip shops that only sell rubbish frozen chips. The fish is great as is the battered sausage. Only recommendation is that the curry sauce could be nicer.
Kris
It's really rare to find hand cut chips in Auckland. Mariner fish and chips did not disappoint. Amazin and tasty hand cut chips and delicious fresh fish of the day. Highly recommend this amazing chippy

Fish burger and Irish curry was excellent

I'm so glad this is my new local chippy! It's certainly isn't the cheapest around but it's one of the few places that actually does proper chips rather than frozen rubbish. The batter is tasty but not too greasy or sickly. The fish has also always been fresh. Portion size for the price isn't great (you can upsize the chips but for a price and it makes it even more costly) but you aren't hungry when you finish. Their mushy peas are really nice too! The battered Mars bar is interesting but it feels like a calorie overload. The apple pie is also pretty tasty. In summary, it's not something you have regularly, so it's not terrible to fork out the price as a weekend treat when you don't fancy cooking. They are consistently good too. :-)

Best F&C in town. The only thing for me was no lemon being served with the fish which was a bit bummber.

The fish and chips were really good quality. Not oily. Chips were hand cut (looked and tasted like it). Fish was on the small side but faultless. Paying a slight premium price but at least you get premium quality. Kind of like shopping in Japan. Gladly pay a higher for superior quality and experience.
Ursula Foley
Love your fish burgers! Consistently fresh delicious fish and never oily. I like the panko crumb and brioche combo. I'm such a picky eater but somehow manage to make my way through far too much food!

What an awesome fish & chip shop. Fresh moist fish, crispy batter, hand cut chips. To those reviewers who complain about the price - fresh New Zealand caught fish is not cheap and nor should be, especially snapper, tarakihi and gurnard as this place serves. Those fish are premium table fish, not bland, tasteless hoki or worse, farmed white fish served from a frozen box shipped in from South East Asia. Hand cut twice cooked chips are labour intensive and worth every delicious bite. This place is dedicated to serving premium fare and should be celebrated for doing so. The owners obviously care about quality. Though a lot of people do get it, every time we go there is a queue of people waiting. One bite of their battered fish and you’ll see why.

These guys deliver on food and service, good quality food.. Just a minor issue, fish is very good but the batter is very oily, not sure why.. could be the batter used or the oil needs replacing.. service is very good , counter guy was so cool

Best fish and chips you’ll find in NZ!! Only place we’ve found that makes their own chips & curry sauce, and actually has a proper chippy sausage!- Surprisingly these things are hard to come by. We’ll be back again for sure
Michelle M
Really nice fresh fish, and lovely chunky chips. The batter was light and crispy with a generous sized piece of fish. Would definitely buy again!

Ordered for dinner, every thing were pretty good,,Service nice and quickly, will definitely order again.

Finally Real Squid! I’m so tired starching calamari rings. But their squid is real which is great!

Everything was well seasoned. Chips were soft the way agria should be.

Mashed peas I didn’t understand much but the gravy with onions was very tasty and delicious.

Fish was fresh and very great portions too. Very happy and satisfied. Their service was kind and friendly also.

Service: 5/5
Food Quality: 4/5
Food Quantity: 4/5
Presentation: 4.5/5
Price per person: $10-$20

What a gem to stumble upon

Me and friends were craving fish and chips (and also because our bday girl is trying to stick to a Fish only diet) and we just looked up fish and chips near us and found the Mariner. The interior is totally different from the pictures provided on Zomato, maybe recently got renovated? But omg we weren’t prepared to be as full as we were 😻

I ordered the battered tarakihi burger, which was surprisingly so filling and So YUM! the tartare sauce (I think) in the burger was a little much for me, but that’s my personal preference and the chips helped ease that out for me. The squid rings/calamari was AMAZING! we ordered two and demolished it! Our group also ordered the grilled snapper burger, battered snapper burger and chicken burger - all amazing! So glad we stumbled upon this cute little resturant and can’t wait to come again!

The aroma in this place is divine! Oh, how I loved everything we ordered.
I've been here quite a few times. Does it have new owners or a new chef? Its usually great but this time horrible. There was more batter than fish and the batter was awful. At $10 a piece it was a complete waste of money. The chips were nice. I'll give them one more try and if nothing improves I wont be back.
Sophie Cooper
Used to love this place and its food! HOWEVER, they have decided to discontinue catering for gluten free allergies. This is VERY disappointing seeing as I am coeliac and this was the ONLY place I was able to get fish and chips from. Not impressed.
J Eats
Ordered tarakihi burger and fillet from uber Eats. Burger lacks flavour but satisfies your fish craving enough if you're after a quick bite. Would be interested to dine in as oppose to takeaway because the batter was somewhat soggy by the time it arrived.
Munchies
Not going to lie man this outlet waaaaaaay over priced for fish and chips. Food is okay but seriously $7-$8 for a piece of fish? Even the portion size for chips $5 a scoop? Better off heading to Tipenes in morningside.
Minoru Tsujimoto
I had burgers as friend told me the burger was tasty. Chips were not oily at all and crisp, crunchy! I had fish burger, the deep fried fish was also good quality, buns are soft and tasty. The sauce! Simple but YUMMY!! Fish and sauce combination was awesome, I couldn’t stop eat it! Will be back soon!!!
Coco Andmommy
First time trying The Ancient Mariner today. I am a little dissapointed. I think the food was cooked in oil that wasn't hot enough as its now very oily and doesnt have a nice crunch to it at all. Im sure this place would be great however in my experience it just happened to not be my luck. It could be I ordered so close to opening time. But Fish does have a nice flavour all that aside. The Oil did ruin the food completley for me though.

This is the second time I tried this place. Granted the prices are high for fish and chips but you pay their price expecting quality... Last night I order a Chicken Burger and Chips.... The burger was sub standard with a really thin bashed out chicken breast 'fragment' that covered less than half of a small burger bun, then there was a heap of sauce, basically no lettuce, and a single minute piece of tomato.... seriously? SHAME ON YOU for $9:50... and the chips for $5 were under cooked and still crunchy and hard on the inside.... Shitty food, overpriced.... get it together people

Lunch date with Denny Setiawan, went here after reading their good review on zomato.. it’s nice place with nice decoration and also they served a fresh seafood, we tried tarahiki fish and it’s yummy 🤤🤤
Mark Tiemann
Well, fish and chips as it’s standard. I found it a little overwhelming how ppl say it’s the best fish and ships ever. A little pricey even if the portions are reasonable sized. But what actually annoyed me is that the girl behind the counter told me it will take 10 min and it actually took 45 min. Is he would have told me in the begging I would have accepted it and would have done stuff in between. All this Uber eat driver have been served before me even if I am the one who had been sitting there for quite a while. Understand that this guys have pre ordered but you should not forget about the walk-ins! Also I like to environment, I am not impressed by the customer service tho.
Ps: I work in customer service myself.
Foodiejuly
Please bring the old slaw salad and burger buns back for the fish burgers...new brioche buns and lettuce combination don’t taste good with the fish. The brioche buns also taste very dry and not fresh.
Sarah
Not cheap fish and chips but well worth it! Gluten free menu is great and always safe (separate fryer). Best for takeaways but can eat at the shop too.
Glenn Town
This is a fabulous Fish and Chip joint
My family rave about the Battered Snapper
I love their Steak Burgers and Hamburgers
The Scallops are divine
The the Chips and Potato Fritters are top quality
Friendly efficient service
It will not disappoint
Mark Sanderson
Ancient mariner have changed hands and sorry to say has gone badly downhill The fish looked more like deep fried chicken and couldn’t be separated from the batter the chips were not good at all and most were left uneaten
I think the problem was old oil much better chips across the road at the bakery
I hope they get back on track soon
Real Slug
Best fish and chips I’ve had in a long time. Fast preparation and the fish was still super crispy when we took it home.

Chips were amazing, calamari rings are real calamari, not the processed stuff that other places serve.

Great experience, will definitely be buying from here again.
Kurikkoplay
The chips are always crispy and golden and flavourful, seems to be hand cut potatoes and not just the cheap frozen ones. I really like how the batter on their fish is light and crispy/crunchy even after driving the food home! It helps they put them in ventilated boxes instead of wrapping them up in paper, making it easier to open up and serve and keeps the food from getting soggy :) lots of options outside of just tarakihi and hoki for fish and the fish always taste very succulent, fresh, and flavourful without being 'fishy'.
Ginolatte
Really loved it, I think its the best fish and chips in Auckland. Some are rated more and I have tried them but this one is still my favorite
Iain Bremner
We’ve been satisfied customers of The Ancient Mariner since it opened, the owners having previously owned the highly rated Chip Shop in Royal Oak. Our favourite- snapper and chips - was consistently very good. However since the founders sold the takeaway a few months ago, we have noticed the quality has fallen. Most noticeable has been the smaller snapper fillet size and reduction in the portion of chips. There is no longer anything remarkable about this fish and chip shop.
Dimitrios Konstantopoulos
Just ok nothing special no drama either. Snapper was tasty.
Chips were decent size.
Oil a bit smelly.
Good prices.
Would try other things soon.
Elmocookie
Supposedly one of the best fish and Chip shops in Auckland. The crumbed fish did not disappoint but we expected more from the freshly cut chips. Still, a worthy visit if you want a bit of the good old fashion fish and chips!
Jasmine
Luckily for me I was staying literally minutes from this fush and chup joint and my hosts on hearing I was partial to decent takeaway took me down here.

First - the orders are a bit slow coming out of the kitchen but when you get them they are worth the wait.

I've only had fish and chips that were as light, crispy, tasty and enjoyable a few times before so this was a highlight. The batter on the fish was light, not dripping oil and the chips had a potato taste.

I found the pricing reasonable, the fish more so. Portions are not huge but are enough to satisfy.

Certainly a place to recommend and go back to.
Megan Durrant
I suggest you do not eat at this place. No 1 The food is not worth the price. No 2 I and a family member are severely allergic to Chilli, i asked if the food i was ordering if it had chilli, i was advised no and now am dealing with a severe allergic reaction as he was wrong. Finally they do not wash their hands, i saw the Asian woman in the kitchen make my burger, my mothers fishcake and the next customers Calamari. All of this was done with no hand washing, given the fact they did not about allergens in the food this does not surprise me. Also it took nearly half an hour to get our order. It was not busy. All in all this place was a disgrace. I cannot express how disappointed we were. I really suggest you do not eat here.
AA
The best Fish and Chips I've tried so far in Auckland. Got Battered Snapper and Crumbed fish of the day "Gumard". The fish was crispy on the outside, soft on then inside. Could feel sweetness of the fish meat. The handcut chips were good too. The pepper and salt condiments deserve a mention. This perhaps is the first store where I could taste such a strong pepper!

Heard many complained about the slightly-above-the-market price, but I still think it is reasonably priced for takeaways (about 11ish for a fish and chips). Some other stores might offer a fish+chips combo, but the price difference is just one dollar or two. For quality, I don't mind chipping in an extra gold coin. Oh, the orange drink is a mexican soda - too sweet 😄
Jay Burgess
Food is fantastic, extremely crispy batter wonderful atmosphere and delicious food. They don't accept credit card which was a bit painful, but the food well and truly makes up for it

I've walked past this place so many times while trying the other places near it. Finally going solo, I've managed to find the time and go in and order a Steak Burger and damn it was the best Steak Burger you can ever get from a Fish and Chips shop. The Steak was very juicy, just the way I liked it and the salad that went with the burger pretty much added a great touch to the whole thing.

The staff there were great, it gave a positive vibe once I entered the place and the waiting time was pretty much what I expected it to be.

When they say they're a fish and chips shop, they're not kidding. The whole theme is based on the marine life of olden day sailing and fishing. It gives that unique marine life vibe like it does with it's tables and chairs. Maximum effort, great takeaway shop with a great burger.
Picky Diner
27/6/18 - Nice chunky fresh hand cut chips, juicy and meaty snapper fillet, fresh calamari rings. Does it sound unbelievable? Real, totally real, new team at Ancient Mariner is doing exceedingly well . Keep it up guys, I’ll be coming back for more!
Ben Newman
Gluten-free menu cooked in a separate fryer to avoid cross contamination for those with coeliacs. Some of the best customer service in Auckland.

Would heartedly recommend.
The Bungeye
Fish (snapper) was excellent and so were the scallops. The squid rings I would not order again. Chips average A little more expensive than others around Eden and although above average probably not enough to sway me from the local further up the hill.
Ffionachua
Love the food - got a takeaway box and everything was still crispy when I got home (snapper, scallops and prawn skewers). Great flavours too.
My scallops were a little oily, but hey it's fast food!
Also, the prawn skewers are not battered in case you're wondering.
Tommy Ocean
Not the cheapest fish n' chippy but I'm very impressed with The Ancient Mariner. Great customer service, quick, tasty and, theme. Food was presented in a neat box, came with lemon for my fish and the fish was well cooked. Has seats to dine in, even. I highly recommend and will definitely go back.

Wow. Just, wow! From the polite efficient, accommodating service you receive from the staff, to the actual food, The Ancient Mariner is the city's best kept secret. The fish and chips is truly award winningly good and the highest quality ingredients are used, you can tell once you have a taste. Considering that fish and chips is the quintessential kiwi cheat feed, these guys have reinvented the wheel.

As for the customer service... I remember calling in an order from. Work to be picked up after work. For unforseen reasons I was an hour delayed in leaving work and when I got there I apologized. The man handed me the bag and then took it back from me. He said it would be too stale and soggy so he'd make me up a new batch of everything I ordered... For free!
Lia Yosaatmadja
A pretty decent place for fish and chips. The hand cut fries and their kumara chips are definitely the highlight of the meal. The battered terakihi is definitely tasty, their squid rings are also nice and crispy.
The grilled fish was small and I thought it was a little expensive, but I think they are on the pricier side for fish and chips anyway. But the quality of the food is pretty good.
Mike
Very cool themed design of interior!
Friendly staff and quick service, great fish'n'chips, however a bit pricier than what you can get by driving a bit further out. Fish was well cooked, and crispy enough on the outside, however not dry inside. It's been a while since my visit there, so things might have changed.

This place is so cool!!!
The food is incredible! By far the best fish and chips I've had, I will totally be eating here again.
The crumbed fish is sooo good!!!

Popped in here for a quick dinner and was quite impressed. I had the grilled fish which was very moist and well seasoned. You could taste the herbs in the coleslaw which was great too. I would definitely return.

I walked past this place one day to see this great review from an English couple posted to the window. For those that know me I'm English and love my fish, chips and mushy peas. After the great testament from fellow patriots I thought I would give this place a try. Well what a mistake. Ok I understand that improbably sounding harsh right now and yes I bought it on a Sunday so things might have been a little tire. But should this matter. No. So for those that have not read the post in the window it tells the story of an English couple who have gone the length and breadth of nz. Tried many fish and chips but the ancient mariner was the dogs. Well you get the idea. I thought I would try on this basis. Well to be honest my taste buds said something to the complete opposite. The chips had a nasty bitter taste to the degree they were inedible. The fish was far from fresh. I could fresh fish on a weekly basis and this was definitely not. Ok it was Sunday so understand but ends were over cooked and the middle was very mushy. Positive. Nice batter. Mushy peas. Oh my goodness where do I start. Again award winning so say. Over priced. Like bullets tasteless mushy peas. Seriously. Go to countdown and spend that money on a tin of named the the same.

I don't think as an English person this is quite as great as there window review makes out. Absolutely this is a great place for those with a lack of experience when it comes to fish and chips or the nz palette. But definitely not great from my perspective. Very average.
Penelope Chua
I like the character of the place, with the barrels as tables and their nautical theme. I enjoy their burger, their grilled snapper, their onion rings and their chicken nuggets. I will definitely be back. Such a neat place that serves fresh seafood.

Great scallops plus fish and chips. The chips are a decent size and the fish comes with lemon wedges. Excellent service and our order has pretty much always been ready on time.
Isaac
We very much enjoy fish and chips from the Ancient Mariner. Though - sad times that it is closed over the festive season! The staff are really friendly, the fish is fresh and the chips are hot. What more could you ask for?

If you are driving by and the weather is good, why not head up Mount Eden and have a picnic?
Christian
Order takeaway here very often. The fish whether it is grilled, crumbed or battered has always been very good. Chips are excellent too. Reasonably priced and love that they sell Mexican Jarritos soft drinks.
Wei-Kai Shyu
If you're a big fan of fish then try the food out here. The fish is cooked to perfection. The chips are thick and hearty. Personally, I prefer thin and crunchy chips but these are still bomb as.

🍽 Service was friendly and efficient
🍽 Pricing was average
🍽 Premises was clean and tidy and had a great theme
🍽 Mushy peas tasted kinda peculiar but I've never had mushy peas before so I can't really say, but my partner has. They were repulsed by it
🍽 Hamburger was bland and appeared to have no sauce in it whatsoever. Below average. I didn't even finish it
🍽 Battered fish was fresh, battered well and delicious. Also it came with a lemon wedge
🍽 Chips were average
🍽 Coleslaw didn't taste fresh and was bland. Made yesterday or at best made early in the AM
Amber
Superb quality fish and chips, fresh ingredients and über friendly owners.
The hamburger is customisable with all sorts of creative ingredients and all items are very reasonably priced. Great drinks selection too!
Heidi M
I dropped by here for an early lunch I ordered a steak burger.
The steak, tomato, carrot, lettuce, cabbage, caramelized onion was good but a tad too much salad.
I felt like this burger was missing Bacon, it would be good if you wanted something good yet cheap. I may re-try this place if i happen to be in the area but not for burgers. The fish and chips that the couple next to me had looked great, they had an interesting drinks and ice-cream, the eatery was a tad dark with lighting but it did live up to it's nautical theme. Good for: families/students/ regular fish and chip crowd.

Food was amazing and it tasted really fresh either eat in or even takeaway and it's rare to find a fish and chip shop like Ancient Mariner. Service was good and the packaging of takeaways was fantastic. Prices was high but was really worth the spend.
Ali Hitchcock
Best fish and chips in Auckland. I go for the battered snapper and kumara fries with aioli. A little bit more expensive but well worth it! Awesome fridge full of the best sodas also
Steve Paulson
I have a lot of time for this chip shop.

Good quality food, love what they have done with the place, staff actually knowledgeable on fish, and it has a gluten free menu so can take the mrs without issue.

This is a cut above your everyday chip shop. Reflected in the price, no deal breaker though.
Sam Edgar
Zero Value For Money. Forgot the potato fritters. If that's what 3 scoops of chips looks like then I'm blown away. It was tasty and cooked well however the "cheap eats" section should not be ticked.
Fries With That
Very good fish and chip shop, battered terakhi was super fresh and not at all oily, great hand cut chips, and the potato fritter was the best I have had in NZ. A little bit more expensive than your normal fish and chip shop but is totally worth it for the standard of the offerings, My new regular!

Love this place! Can't get enough of their gluten free offerings!! Close to home and offer an easy option for fast and yummy food. Great service and really helpful when ordering and fast!
SanHa Lee
The staffs are all kind, foods delicious, and price is cheap. It's my first time eat fish n chips in Auckland, and it was quite lovely. (Garlic sauce was the best.)
Mike Bellamy
Yummy. Price matched quality. The squid rings were the first thing to pass my lips and had me sold on the joint. Fish was properly fresh too (all too rare in even the better F & C shops)! Great service but best to phone order in.
Audric Kam
Pros: The food tasted great and the service was on par as well. The indoor setting was also commendable and contribute to the great experience I had.//Cons: The portions were a bit lacking, albeit my peers and I do possess large appetites. Additionally, I believe a few traditional fish and chips specials would benefit the menu; however, that is just a suggestion.//Other Considerations: Although it is relatively more costly, you have to take into account the location and, most importantly, the quality of the food provided.
Temptation Cakes Auckland
Great little fish and chip shop in mt eden enjoyed the food amensly sauces that they do are great so grab a few to try the mushy peas are mind blowing too highly recommended

The decor is unique, and I really like the nifty way the interior is decorated. Oak barrels, an copy of James Cook's map of NZ, and the feeling of being on the deck of a ship all add to the allure. The menu is typical of a fish and chip shop, with the mandated fish and chips, burgers and various assorted other seafood treats.

I usually go for the grilled fish, and it never fails to please. Perfectly cooked and seasoned, I can never find a fault. The chips (both potato and kumara) are some of the best I've ever tried. My partner loves the hot dog, and orders it every time. The drinks cabinet has a variety of less common drinks, and their sauces are wonderful too.

The service is always friendly, and the staff are great at making sure your order is taken quickly, and your food cooked and given to you without too much delay (obviously depending on how busy they are). The thing I love most is walking past and checking out the blackboard they have, which has a variety of sensibly cheeky sayings (that will make sense to those who have seen it). It appeals to my sense of humour.
Stango
Crumbed or battered fish; both are done really well here! Chips are also good. Prices are quite high if compared to a suburban fish and chip store, but consistent with Mt Eden prices. The sauces are high quality but must be bought on the side. Really satisfied with the quality of the fish and chips. My partner works near by, so the lucky guy has Ancient Mariner almost every week.
Manpreet Singh
Best fish burger ever had in Nz. Different experience, excellent customer service. Excellent Quality food all freshly baked. Looking forward to visit again.

Friendly service, nice little place.
We had snapper and chips each, very tasty. We shared a bowl of mushy peas, best mushy peas I've had out of the UK!

Most delicious Fish N ships that I've tried in NZ
It's got a good variety of fish and other snacks to choose from. Went there whenever there was nothing else available or appealing and haven't been dissappointed. Like their potato fritters :)

Popped in here after work with family to get something quick for dinner. Usually pass the place on my way to uni and it's just across the street from work. I had the chips which were really really good and the gurnard, it was amazing the fish tasted fresh and meaty. Not like the usual fishy taste you get at fish and chip places. I also got a mussel fitter that I didn't really like it was thick and more like a patty, had floury taste as well. Decor of the place was really impressive I was blown away. They were super busy as well which is always a good sign.
Squiddy
The chips are great - I'm craving some right now. The paua fritter was lovely and chunky with minimal filler. The hotdog on a stick was a battered saveloy which made it tastier than the usual precooked sausage hot dog. I was ultra-hungry so I also had a piece of battered gurnard (their fish of the day). The actual fish was a little dry and the batter wasn't the texture that I like. It was airy and crunchy, but crunchy like rice bubbles and meringues are crunchy whereas I prefer more of a crispy, snappy sort of crunchy. The batter was also very thin so I think didn't coat the fish well enough to protect it from the hot oil so it dried out a bit.

Service was cheery and friendly and the decor is nifty. You can tell they take pride in the quality of their food.

I'd come back for the chips and would love to try other things on their menu but because I didn't like the fish, wouldn't come here regularly. I still gave them a good rating because all the things I DID like about them were done excellently.

Sean
Went here just coz it was the nearest fish n chip shop. A little pricey for your normal fish n chip shop, but the food was outstanding, fish had a huge amount of flavour and the chips were perfectly cooked. Also the service was good.
Jason Garcia
I love this place - great food, consistent quality & service, reasonable pricing & easy on-street parking. This is the only place I get fish & chips in Auckland. I'd love it if they were open slightly later, particularly on a Friday & Saturday night.

Friday office lunch. I emailed day before to check on best way to handle 10+ orders and Tina rang straight away to suggest putting order thru that night so they can order extra fresh fish that evening. Did so and went to collect at 12.30.. Everything was just coming out of the kitchen and a friendly wave from Tina in the kitchen to thank us for the order. Food was EXCELLENT! Fish fresh and not too over battered. Chips crunchy outside, soft inside, burgers were huge and tasty, and big applause for the trial paua fritter! We will certainly return and totally recommend.
Carlos
A beautifully presented fish and chips shop designed to look like an old galleon.
The owners work behind the counter and in the kitchen.
This to me is the mark of a good business. People who genuinely care about their customers and their experience.
The fish is freshly caught and prepared each day, the hand cut fries and fritters are legendary. If you're visiting Mt Eden...visit The Ancient Mariner.
You will not be disappointed!!!!
Samantha Lines
We came here after work one night on a recommendation by a friend. I absolutely loved the decor and the theme they had running through the menu. Pirates are always a winner.
We decided to take our food home but I would have been comfortable eating there as well. There isn't a huge amount of seating and what is there is a bit awkward to perch on, but it's an interesting place to be and to take in the surroundings.
I ordered a Tarakihi burger, my friend ordered a chicken burger and kumara fritter and my boyfriend ordered the Snapper and chips.
My friend was really surprised that the kumara fritter was a slice of kumara that's battered and fried instead of a potato cake but it looked tasty. Her chicken burger looked very peppery to me but she really enjoyed the filling. My fish burger was good. The fish was well cooked and the batter was light and crispy but I found the bun to be a little too dry. It would have been nice if it was buttered and grilled. My boyfriend loved his crumbed Snapper and chips and had no complaints.
Overall, it was a good meal out but I would probably not order a burger there again as the roll was far too dry for my liking. Perhaps a bit more sauce in the slaw or some butter wouldn't go amiss?

Hands down our fav takeaway. I love that my Snapper is fresh and tastes delish ever time I order. Chips are chunky cut and not soaking in oil so nice and crisp. The feedback on the burgers from my family are all very positive as well. Meat patties that are full of flavour and nice and thick. I would say that are definitely home made. Packaged so that they are still nice and hot when we get home and not soggy. Staff are also so friendly and always have a smile even when they are run off their feet. Since going here from the beginning of the year we have never looked anywhere else. We also travel a wee way to get them because they are that good. Kim

Great people, great food, and we love the Gluten-Free option. The best Fish and Chips in Auckland, without a doubt. Highly recommended!
Steve Hall
Decided to pop along and try, and really enjoyed food, chips were good, was a little pricey but enjoyable still,
Had fish, chips, and bacon and egg burger to try, and enjoyed all, although fish was a little small, but tasted great.
Looked to be same people from chip shop in royal oak, which I only clicked as I was leaving, and when they owned that I used to go there often. A bit out of my way but will go back when I can

On a lazy sunday at around quarter to 5, myself and chip obsessed sea mate decided to take the plunge and explore the Ancient Mariner. We were greeted with a hearty ‘Allo in the pleasantly kitsch interior while we leaned on a wine barrel to make our order. Some interesting menu items piqued our interest..mushy peas, salmon skewers and chatham island sourced homemade paua, but we were there for fish and chips. There was nice selection of fish with options to either batter, crumb or fry, we opted for the seasonal blue cod, its fresh thick fillet a delight in the light, crispy batter. One could not hope for a better deep fried fish experience. My sea mate agreed!.At this point, a delinquent pirate entered the fray in the form of a soggy uninspired chip.In fact we were quite flabbergasted, that such a brilliantly cooked fresh piece of fish could sit atop this mountain of quite frankly unusual chippery. Perhaps we had a bad batch? and although they were lightly salted, both sea man felt a need for additional salt, maybe in the form of sachets?. My sea mate ordered a battered oyster…her review consisted of gobbling and mumbles, i’ll presume a positive experience.I myself opted for two calamari rings and was cheered by an additional ring on the house, and as they were a great rendition i was suitably pleased. Our largely tasty morsels, came ensconced in a brown cardboard box which kept our meal both hot and devoid of the dreaded sog. A great first experience and we do hope to board the mariner once again, but just desperately hoping that the rogue chip can be elevated to the high standards of the rest of our meal!.

The fish and chips are outstanding. One thing I would say is. . . your burgers! Disappointing, I had the fish burger with Tarakihi, the fish was great but the bun was way too small. You use coleslaw in a burger instead of fresh lettuce and tomato. That would be my only gripe. Please don't use coleslaw, a burger should have lettuce leaves and fresh tomatoes, even fastfood burger chains know this. The only people that use coleslaw in burgers really don't appreciate a good burger.
Sadly I will not be back until this situation improves, the fish and chips are great but the burgers need more attention in my opinion.

I've had better. We asked if the tartare sauce was homemade, and the girl at the counter said, "technically no, but it is made by a chef." Whatever chef that is needs to go back to tartare school. The little (expensive!!) pottle of sauce was thin, sweet and despicable, and it tasted like store-bought salad dressing. I wasn't particularly bowled over by the fish and chips - as good quality as you'd expect for the price, really.

It's the little things like homemade sauce and freakin' pineapple fritters that make a fish n chip place outstanding. TBH, if you can't offer good sauce, don't offer any.

I have seen my share of takeaways and this is my new benchmark! The chips are always cooked to perfection and don't have that greasy feel like you often get. Great menu, I highly recommend the hotdogs and fish burgers....with a scoop of chips of course. Thanks guys, been to see you about 4 times and never once felt disappointed.

We used to think that Eric's in Cambridge did the best Fish and Chips in NZ and then we found these guys when they were in Royal Oak, we have now followed them to Mt Eden. They not only have the best fish and chips in NZ, but they have the best Gluten Free fish and chips as well! You really can't get better!

Everything we ordered was delicious ESPECIALLY the fish burger. The best fish and chips we've had a in a very long time - superb. Also recommend the fish cakes, paua fritter and potato fritters but it was all good ultimately.

We followed Trevor and Tina from their previous fish and chippery, not only because they make possibly the only truly gluten fee takeaways in town, but also because they are so darn good at what they do. And the Ancient Mariner does not disappoint. These folk have outdone themselves in creating a fantastic product-focused business that offers the very best of fish and chips, an entire menu of gluten free options, and an enticing range of fresh and expertly cooked seafood and fish. You don't even have to have the fish battered! They take pride in ensuring quality every time, they don't shy away from quantity, and are always on hand in the galley to greet and share a bit o' banter. We have visited the new takeaway on "more than one or two" occasions already (I'm a bit concerned for my waistline that we are now on a first name basis) and every time has been consistently perfect. The cooking oil is always fresh and tasty, the fish is superb, and their chips are hand cut and homemade. Proper, old school fish and chips, yet up to date menu with delicious offerings from the chefs such as tuna or prawn skewers, which also come gluten free. Top find.

Fabulous fresh fish, golden chips and the steak burger was also rated highly by my son. Will definitely be back to try other menu items as there was a great range of options and good value for money given the quality.

Best fish and chip shop in Auckland, hands down. Fabulous fit out, really helpful and friendly staff, and the food...!!!

Fish was beautiful and incredibly fresh. The hand cut chips were such a pleasant change from the processed standard you get at other fish and chip shops, and their chicken burger was delicious.

I had heard great things from others about how good this place was and tonight I found out for myself. Please give this place a try. It will become your regular.

This place rocks!!
Sensational fresh fish & crispy chunky chips.
Loved the presentation of the meal & was astounded to find NO greasy, dripping fat in the bottom of the box!
Well worth the drive from Ponsonby.

I took my family and some overseas guests for fish, chips and burgers at The Ancient Mariner recently. We walked in and the place looked absolutely amazing, they have obviously gone to a lot of trouble to deck out the shop with a nautical theme. The sounds of the ocean and call of seagulls play on soundtracks in the background, which re-creates the perfect "fish and chips on the beach" ambiance. To top it all the food was delicious and our guests extremely impressed. We will definitely become one of their regulars even though it's a bit of a drive, because it's totally worth it.

Delicious food, the fish was incredibly fresh. A really wide selection, and at a very good price. We'll definitely be coming back. Plus, I think my children will enjoy the great atmosphere of the place.

These guys know how to do fish n chips! Hands down the best in Auckland. They do both fabulous gluten free and normal food. Their gluten free stuff is especially amazing and you can feel completely confident that you won't be feeling sick from contamination hours later. Their shop decor is also very well thought out and bumps up the experience to another level, plus they are always warm and friendly. 5 stars - no question about it!

The Ancient Mariner sets itself apart from your local fish and chip store by offering not just seating, but a themed interior, complete with ship's wheel, sea gulls squawking on the sound track, tables made out of barrels, and a round window looking into the "Galley". We went soon after the takeaway opened (on New Year's Day), so the place was understandably quiet, but we found the fish and chips to be nice and crispy. The hamburger was not very exciting, with a patty similar in flavour and texture to a pre-cooked one, but what can you expect for $5.80? There is a gluten free menu for those of that persuasion.
