Review Mekong Neua Thai Restaurant - Auckland Central

Such a yummily tasty local Thai. Loved the Pad Thai, green Curry and sizzling beef. Super quiet night to dine in. Encouraging more in. Remember it being a super busy place in the day. Still here and still delicious. Come eat.
Donna
Really nice Thai food, reasonably priced and if you dine in it’s BYO wine and corkage only $2.50. We ordered 3 main wok dishes with steamed rice, all generous portions and delicious. Lovely owners too. Highly recommend A+
Andrew Wright
Food was superb. All dishes were delicious. Two of us had a fish curry - the dish was very generous with fish and very tasty. Friendly, efficient service. Highly recommended.
Sylvia Hogg
Food was good Pity they didn't give us a drinks menu. Really good value for money Some foods were not on the menu that night such as duck and roti.
Jung Eun Kim
Had big family dinner! The food was lovely! Pineapple fried rice was very different compared to other restaurant fried rice. Very interesting taste. Fried snapper garlic pepper was thumbs up. Other dishes were nice as well. Kids loved the roti bread and chicken satay. Thumbs up!

Great location and awesome for a dining experience with a bit of privacy coupled with amazing food!
Janine Grainger
Fantastic food, flavours are perfectly balanced, portions are generous and service is great. Wine list is slim, but grab a bottle from the liquor store a few doors up and this place is a perfect night out!
Kamya
Amazing food and really friendly staff. There’s something delicious no matter that diet you have. The chicken pad Thai and red curry fried rice are certainly my recommendations. Their mocktails are good too but quite expensive.

Enjoyed a relaxing meal here. We arrived near closing but they offered to squeeze us in. The crispy duck special and pad Thai were both delicious. Service was a bit sporadic but we appreciated them taking us as it was late. Will definately return.

Wow! A-mazing 👏 loved the service, atmosphere and the food was Fantastic! Highly recommend 👌 Carpark on a busy night in Kingsland is impossible, so get there early. Our table of 7, a majority ordered from the Signature Dishes list and 1 ordered From the Wok list, we all loved our meals. Thank you again Mekong Neua for my 1st time GREAT experience eating Thai 🥰

Loved it, well decorated and plenty of tables and byo so that's always a plus

My grandad loves this place. He since has gone to jail for level 3 tax evasion. However he remembers you all fondly

Best Pad-thai I have ever eaten

This food was fantastic. Not all was available on the menue, but that didn't matter. In its day used to be packed, a sign of the times, nothing else. Get here, well priced and well prepared by a chef who obviously takes pride in their offerings.
Kristina Ann Morgan
The food is tasty and fresh. The staff are efficient. The food and beverage was served quickly. I love that you can BYO wine.
Radisha Casseer-Martin
Service was quiet fast and food was delicious too
Ethan
The food came quickly and the appetizers were varied but tasted like sausage meat. The Tofu Salad was disappointingly 95% tofu and bean sprouts with hardly any salad ingredients. The mains were well-presented but lacked any depth of flavour.
Melissaf.xx
Food came quickly. Flavours were average. Pad Thai had too much ketchup. Service was average, had to try several times to get the attention of waiters. Cosy atmosphere with the fireplace on cold nights.

We dined on a Sunday evening. A warm table by the fire on a cold winter's night. Absolutely delicious food and excellent service. The 5 of us thoroughly enjoyed our time at Mekong Neua tonight. Can't wait to return.

A group of 5 of us popped in here for dinner before going to the a game at Eden Park. The meals were nice with only good things said about the food.
Unfortunately the service was lacking. We had to ask for everything. Once we found a staff member who wanted to talk to us we had to ask for a table in the half empty restaurant. Then after sitting at the table for a while we had to wave done a waitress to get given the menus. By the time the finally decided to take our orders we had given up on the idea of entrees as we only had time for mains. At this stage we realised that we had to ask for water at the table and hope the food was going to be delivered in time to enjoy before the game.
As we finished our meals I watched another table go up to the bar to order their food after they had sat waiting for a staff member to return to them.
The poor service cost them at least a round of drinks and several entrees from our table.
The two stars is for the food.
Iknowwhatimtalkingabout
Service was horrible, the place was loud, food was average to insulting (4 shrimps on a shrimp dish) and price was undeserved. I was inspired to write this review as the service the ambiance and the food was utterly subpar to the point of rude when you spend over $100 on three people. Deeply disappointed for such a well known establishment.

Took 2 hours for our food to come out , one meal was completely missed from the order and when we first arrived at the restaurant someone had been seated at our booked table
Akym
Food is very average and service was horrible. We had dinner here in a small group and had trouble throughout the night trying to get anyone to serve us. Every time we tried to wave someone down the staff would either look away or ignore us. Ended up having to walk up to the people at the till just to order extra drinks. It wasn’t a busy night so I don’t understand why the service was so slack. There are many other Thai restaurants that I have been to with better food and service.

We went here before the rugby, I had booked a table for 4 on the previous Monday as taking clients. So annoyed as when we tuned up they didn’t have a booking even tho I showed them a confirmation email and reservation number. We finally got a table waited for 40 mins for first round of drinks to arrive. Food was so late that we almost missed the start of the game. Service was terrible as staff were overwhelmed with so many people. They needed more staff especially when there is a huge event on. Food was good but no chance to appreciate it as we had to Hoover it back. Been here before and it was amazing.

Great ambience/vibe. Not too loud. Nice big menu. Food was very good. One minor let down was that some wait staff didn't seem too well trained (a waiter grabbed my plate before I'd finished eating/another kept interrupting conversation to refill water). Other than that, it's a good lil spot 👌🏽

Went for dinner here with a group of 10. We all ordered various curries however they all tasted the same - bland, watery, and with frozen green vegetables. Really overpriced too. Wouldn’t recommend, especially for the price point.

This is an awesome Thai restaurant in Kinsgland.

We ordered the egg noodle wrapped prawns for starters with a prawn Tom yum soup. For mains we ordered prawn green curry with two sides of jasmine rice. My favourite was probably the soup which was packed with flavour. The only downside is that for the price they charge for prawns there were hardly any prawns! About two in the soup and 5 in the curry which doesn’t justify the increase in price .

Anywho though the restaurant was completely empty it had a nice warm feeling and friendly staff.

Great food, great service, portions was ok, I have had fried rice and soup at many other places , when compared to other Thai restaurants nothing exceptional. But a nice quiet and cozy place to go eat.
Jewel
One of my favourite Thai restaurant in Auckland. I always call to booking for table and order my favourite menu steamed fish before I go to restaurant because they are very busy especially on weekend. So I get my food within 5 minute after arrived to restaurant. Very nice and friendly staff. And you also able to bring your own drink too. Happy yummy ;)

I have eaten here many times before and the place is always usually pumping and thought it was a bit strange that there was only 3 other tables occupied on a Tuesday at 8.30pm?? Must have changed ownership as the food was absolutely terrible so salty and just couldn't even eat it. They waiter had no understanding of wine at all and such a bad selection to select from. I ordered a nice bottle of reserve and then brought me a standard bottle and then told me this is the one I had ordered, he had no idea what he was talking about. Will never be returning here again, so many other nice places to dine in Kingsland.
Dale Spencer
Sadly must have been an off-night for the chef at this usually reliable staple of Kingsland. Somewhat bland meat dishes combined with an odd ambience including nature documentaries on the big TV.
Hopefully it was just that once
Anand
Oh my god we Waited for 1 hour and our food never came. We reached there and nobody informed us about there's a wait for food. We ordered and waited for 30mins and then told that food is 10 minutes away. After 15 more minutes then we are told that there was a mix up with the orders and our orders were not started yet. Eventually we including our 10 year old had to leave at 10pm with any dinner. Never go there again...😡😡😡
August Hislop
Amazing food, nice atmosphere and great service. I ordered a salmon green curry and was absolutely blown away! Spring rolls were lovely and so were the money bags, definitely will be back!

Been here for lunch today. Absolutely loved the experience. Had Tom Yum Goong (prawn tom yum soup), it was the best Tom yum soup that I had so far. My friend and I shared Red curry with beef and a chicken dish (with oyster sauce). Both had huge amount of meat and the seasoning was perfect. Worth every dollar and highly recommended.

Went here for my Aunty's birthday and it's a nice place for groups. Plenty of dishes to choose from - all great portions for sharing. The staff were efficient and although it took awhile for our food to arrive we were happy with the standard of food.
Pinny Quinlan
Nice Thai restaurant. Presentation is great and service was good. Not to big, not to small. Fish dishes were on point 👌 lots of flavours.
Been back a few times.
Nidhi
The food was absolutely delicious. We were a group of 10 and we all ordered different things from the starter and the mains. The satay chicken was very yummy, and they were generous with the satay. We had ordered a duck mango curry, which was definitely the best dish out of everything. The pad Thai was full of flavours and not very dry or oily. We had ordered a beef sizzling plate and the beef was very juicy and delicious. The quantity of the food is sufficient. The food is a bit pricy but worth it. We had no food remaining at all. Will be going back there more often.
Hemant Wagh
Went this evening with friends. Have been there a few times. The food was awesome and in spite of it being busy and a group being pretty boisterous the staff was calm and friendly. To top it all it is a very reasonable place. Highly recommended.
Leesh
Our table shared 3 appetizers and 3 mains and every dish was well presented and tasted delicious. The service was excellent and we enjoyed the atmosphere. We will definitely be back!
Tanz
Three of us came for dinner. Around twenty tables one site, but only served by two staffs(though friendly). They were running all the time but still too busy to take care of all the tables. I think there were not more than two people in the kitchen, making it very slow to get all the tables served. Waiting time was longer than expected.

Foods were ok, not impressive but in a good quality amongst Thai restaurants. Price was a little bit higher that the value of the dish.

A normal choice for Thai food lovers, not an outstanding place. Don't mind coming again if invited but won't be there myself.
Avi Yabaluri
The location's central to Kingsland, I really like the interior design & ambience of the restaurant. . . really sets & continues to keep the mood for a good meal!

Now, the starters... in my opinion, weren't very good. They might objectively be good but they're not to my liking, not for me.

The mains, though... wow. We ordered the Pad Med Ma Moung (Chicken), the Thai Fried Rice (Chicken) and the Red Curry Fried Rice (Beef). They were all absolutely AWESOME! Flavourful, plentiful. . . just full of delight! For a guy who doesn't even like beef, I loved the fried rice! So unexpectedly good, it's the first time I've actually enjoyed Thai food! :)
B
Definitely my top Thai restaurant! Been here so many times and the quality of the food and service is consistently great. Serving is massive, very tasty food and not so expensive. Would surely recommend!
Jasveen Kaur
Pretty good value and atmosphere. We had a lovely duck stirfry, beef stirfry and the tasting platter of appetizers. Everything was fresh and hot. And BYO corkage was cheap. A good cheap eat.
Andrew Carline
Good entree but curries were watery flavourless rubbish. Frozen vegetables too! Used to be great here but management have moved to Tusk in Balmoral which is way better!
George Rush
Appalling service, good food. I think management has changed. We booked a table for seven people, having planned to treat friends who were returning to Europe soon. We were crammed onto a tiny table for five and not informed beforehand that there were no tables for seven people. Food was served on starter sized plates which were only changed to main course sized plates after requesting twice. We were served by a waiter who we were told was 'new' six months ago. Today there was no improvement: he had no initiative and was totally oblivious to our discomfort. There was not enough room for our orders! Going out for a meal is not just about the food but about the experience. It felt like eating in an overcrowded hawker stall in south east asia. Certainly not worth $200 +
Foodathon
Went here for a girls BYO dinner and it was awesome! Good food and Great service too, there was 16 of us and they accommodated us really well. Great value overall!
Aucklanders
Great food, all the mains very really tasty and good portions, bit of lack on flavours on entrees and didn't match the price as per small quantity but great service on friday night. Only hard to find a parking on friday nights but its kingsland what else can u expect.
Coz I Can
Food was Yum . The place was so cold that night and the waiter didnt understand what we were saying. I think the decor needs a revamp as its stuck in the early 2000's. Other than that it was fine. Loved the Chicken Tom Yum.

We arrived without a booking at 6pm and were seated immediately. The service was great with lots of good advice about the menu. I ordered from the special menu - crispy duck with tamarind sauce and bok choy. My partner ordered the pork belly "Pad Kra Pao Moo Grob". We also ordered 4 barbeque chicken satay sticks as an appetiser.

I was a little disappointed with the satays. The peanut sauce was superb but the chicken was dry (although deliciously flavoured) and they were extremely tiny. Not worth the $12.50 price tag.

My partner's pork belly was tasty and had a lovely basil flavour. The green beans and capsicum with the pork was a delightful texture. I did feel the basil overpowered the other flavours but it was by no means bland, though my partner said he wished he chose my duck dish instead!

My crispy duck was phenomenal. The duck was perfectly crunchy and paired well with the brocolli and bok choy though I would have preferred more vegetables. The tamarind sauce combined with a smokey flavour just blew my mind. If I was rating the restaurant on this dish alone I would have given the place 5 stars. I did note that the menu said it was mild. I enjoy spiciness and when I ate it I noticed it was quite spicy. I loved it but I imagine if you had someone who can't handle their chilli it might have been an unwelcome surprise. But I don't really understand those people ;)

Altogether with drinks the grand total was $77 which was more than reasonable. I'll be coming back here.
Serena
Prices are alright and service was fast. We got a vegetarian Pad Thai and a vegetarian curry. Food was alright, but not great. Pad Thai seemed a bit rushed and was swimming in condiment (and not enough veggies) and curry was supposed to be extra mild and it was hot.
Hayley Turner
My sister in law brought me here for dinner as it is one of her favourite dining spots. It has now become one of mine and whenever I head into town I will be coming back here. The food is fresh and tasty and the atmosphere is really nice. The staff are really kind too. I really enjoyed the fresh spring rolls, money bags and green curry!

Mekong Neua may not be the best thai food I've had but it certainly isn't the worst. The gaeng massaman was very nice, the beef so tender which is often an issue I have with massamans. They catered very well with our large group although it became a bit squished when more than expected came and they provided a good atmosphere for us to talk. One thing to point out though is that rather than charging per bottle for BYO they charge per glass.
Roni Ramone
This is my favourite Thai restaurant in Auckland. The food is absolutely delicious and there is a wide variety of noodle, rice, and vegetarian dishes. They are good for both dining in and taking away. I haven't eaten here many times and it has never disappointed.

This was our second experience here. It was disappointing compared to our previous one. We still relish the taste of the food that we had the first time which drove us here again. The deep fried snapper being the signature dish was alright, though we could hardly taste pepper from the pepper n garlic sauce. The stir fry dish as told would be hot turned out to be sweet, yes "sweet" and quite unsatisfactory. The food was not at all of the standard compared to its price. The ambiance continues to lure us but would restrain from revisiting this place now.
Lukas
My favourite Thai place in Auckland. The larb snapper is AMAZING. Have it with some stick white rice and get it hot. It's like you've left Auckland for Laos or Thailand!
Tessa Stewart
Food so good!!! Very filling! Great service! Friendly people! Calming environment! Great for a night out !! Very cute and unique!! Overall great experience!
STRADS
On a Tuesday we had dinner at Mekong Neua. We had its special entrées: deep-fried squid tube stuffed with prawn & chicken and Thai sausage with minced pork, garlic & ginger. Both were special - not the ordinary fried spring rolls, fish cakes, etc. For mains, we had larb snapper, sizzling scallops, sauteed-fried pork belly, Thai fried rice with veggie & tofu. All mains were good, except pork belly with its skin too tough. We also tried its sticky rice which was not soft enough. Its black sticky rice with banana, coconut milk & Thai custard, to finish off the dinner was fantastic - except again, for the sticky rice! (Food – 4/5; Service – 3/5; Ambience – 3.5/5)

Came here with me friend for a catch up dinner and it was lovely. You can always tell how good a thai restaurant is based on their Pad Thai which is what i ordered (as this was my first time here) and i must say, it was one of the few genuinely delicious pad thai dishes I've ever tasted. Will return to try other dishes!
Cmys001
The best Thai restaurant I have ever been to. We go there at least once a week and love love love the red curry friend rice. The staff are super friendly would totally recommend this restaurant to everyone

Pleasant experience here! The staff were lovely and the food was really nice too! I felt that it was a little too expensive for what i ordered which was basically meat and veg with deliciois sauce! Negative thing for me was that i ordered chicken for my meat but didnt get chicken! I was eating and gossiping so before i noticed i was quarter of the way through so didnt say anything! It didnt ruin it for me as it still tasted nice whatever it was and i still finished it all!
Jamie Lyons
We ordered the whole deep fried spicy fish and seafood salad. The food was tasty but I was very thirsty after our meal which made me think they might be adding in MSG. Portions were a tad small for the price, and our waiter did not know whether they have larb gai, a classic Thai dish on the menu, which was a little strange. Overall a pleasant experience (restaurant is decorated in the traditional Thai style), but there are better Thai restaurants around, considering the high price and small serving.

We have been dining @ MN for over 11 years and we still love this little gem. We're more than often there in a group and it's always so tempting just to pop into the bottle shop a few doors down, to grab another bottle of wine as we're having such a good time @ MN.

The Larb Snapper's a must and we always order lots of different dishes so we can share. MN's a beautiful little spot and as far as Thai and Lao restaurants go, this is a definite fave of ours.

Have been here a few times now. Good tasty food. Have never dined in - always take out, but always satisfied with my order. Will be back again.

The prices in the menu and the prices at the menu in zomato is different (2$->5$ ) . I used to love this place so much from 2008-2013 then Haven't back here until yesterday . The place is still look warm and nice , the staffs are nice ( but not friendly as all the staffs before ) ... I was disappointed ( really disappointed) about the food . The chicken curry is watery ( like they add too much water in and $22 in the restaurant menu but 17.50$ in zomato menu ) . I ordered pad pak satay ,They should add peanuts sauce while they stir fry the veg and tofu( they used to do this way and taste really yum ) not after they putting the vegetables on the place then add some peanuts sauce on the top . The steam fish is ok but nothing special . ( the price for deep fried whole snapper in the restaurant menu is 27.50$ and in the zomato Menu is 23$ , you can see 4.50$ are different ) . This restaurant is out of my list . Never come back

Been to this place twice. Totally love the ambience. The food is perfectly priced for the decent quantity and location. Would definitely recommend it.
Lauren Futter
Really love this place. Friendly staff, delicious food and they don't mind you splitting the bill. Plenty of vegetarian options! Have been a few times and the are consistently amazing. Recommend!

We came here last night with a group of 10. Although we were late the staff were accommodating and super lovely. I ordered the Tom Kha soup which could have been a little spicier but it was flavoursome and fresh. The restaurant had a great ambience to it for groups and a great alternative to the usually packed Canton Cafe next door. Definitely returning!
Megan
Came here with a $50 voucher and 3 others and found it was a pleasant experience. The menu has plenty of choice without being too overwhelming. I liked that they make it easy for you to customise your main with whatever meat/vege you wanted and had the specific price listed out for clear, fast ordering.

The decor and lighting makes you feel warm and comfortable and the service was polite and attentive. Out water was topped up at just the right times.

We ordered the tofu starters with satay sauce, red curry friend rice, pad Thai and panang curry and spicy tofu salad. All were vegetarian. Overall I felt that the quality of the meals were good - the garnishes, ingredients and presentation, but thought that a few lacked that 'wow' factor.

Highlight of the meals would probably be the tofu salad as it was deliciously spicy, sour and sweet (essence of Thai cuisine!) and was fresh and just yummy :)

As I live in the North Shore I probably wouldn't drive all the way to Kingsland to dine here but it's certainly worth a visit for the great atmosphere and solid food.
Kala Maria
Seriously delicious and fresh food - rice paper rolls with the special dipping sauce are to die for!! My partner and I are so glad we found this little gem.

Eat here!! :D Deliciousness!! :) :) Left here pleased as punch as for the first time ever in NZ tasted real genuine authentic asian food! Saves me the airfare and with more pleasant surroundings! Try it out! ! :)

This is a lovely place for Thai food. I think it's really good for dates because of the relatively quiet ambiance, lovely decor and super attentive service. They casually strolled up to offer more rice just as my boyfriend finished his rice with lots of curry to spare. I was pretty much incredulous at how good their timing was each time, including with allowing us time to chat for a bit before offering the dessert menus.

There's a lot of spicy options for just the right amount of kick, but also lovely dishes for non-spice-loving friends. I really liked the mild Thai fried rice. It was a surprisingly huge plate for way under $20, and the dish was beautiful. With an assortment of veges such as onion, beans, capsicum, tomato and spring onion, it's really good for you too whilst being affordable. I had the vegetables and tofu version. The tofu I wasn't as delighted with, but I can imagine the fried rice being really good with the meat options. I expected fresh soft tofu I guess, but this was more the fried fish tofu stuff, and it was really tough and coarse and chewy without any of the smooth taste of fresh tofu. There also wasn't a lot of it either, just a few morsels, so I did take the rating down a notch for that. Otherwise, it was delicious, and went really well with the provided lemon. I particularly like their presentation, especially with the interestingly cut vegetables.

Overall, good Thai food in a quiet beautiful environment. Perfect for a dinner out.

Yuuuuuuum! Have been here 4 times now since discovering it through the Entertainment Book. LOVE the pad see ew dish and their entrees are Awesome! Once they even put together a special entree at the cost of the normal one that was half meatballs and half moneybags because they're my favourites so that was cool. Having BYO is great too. Totally recommend. So yummy! And plenty of food.
Astrid
I have been here lots of times, most recently with a voucher. They were still super friendly and efficient with their service, noticing when we were cold and offering to close windows etc. The food is always delicious. I can't get enough of the fresh spring rolls and curry puffs. The last time I went I had a green curry which was really good. I like how it is byo too.
Angela Murphy
Very yummy food, however left hungry as they weren't as forth coming with the rice as other thai restaurants have been.
Lovely atmosphere though.
Vikky Almond
Really tasty, interesting food. A little bit different from your average Thai food - with the addition of some more exciting dishes. A recommendation from me.
James Lee
Went there with deal voucher.
Grew up in South East Asian, I found the food was just OK.
The fish larb was good though.

What really annoyed me, when we were still eating while chatting, the male waiter came and wanted to take my friend's plate that was still full with rice and meat. We were a bit surprised, and I said to the waiter, she is still eating !!! He apologized and put the plate back to the table and went away. That was very very unfriendly and impolite service !!!

The table was shaky. I asked the waiter (probably the manager) to fix it, he turned the table left and right without paying attention to the glasses on the table. My friend's wine was spilled a little bit.

Overall, I might come back to this restaurant only with deal voucher. I would also like to suggest, please improve the quality of the service.
Anup Chand
Went with deal voucher which they did not honour. Insisted on extra money for all seafood and duck dishes.
Also they did not see it fit to substitute kids drinks for red wine!
Food was OK, have eaten better Thai food at several other places in Auckland
Jane K
Mekong Neia has an amazing selection of dishes and I love that you can customize just about any dish to have either meat, seafood, or tofu and vegetables. I'm vegetarian, but my family are all meat eaters so it's a great place to go that satisfies all of our preferences.

The staff are also really lovely as is the restaurant itself. It is also one of the few Thai places I have been to which charges you only once for rice, rather than charge per each serving.

Overall, really pleasant atmosphere with nice food.
Laura Jury
Love this place.

The menu is really impressive with standard favorites and different dishes to try.

We where a large group 10+ and there was no problem with delays.

I love how they do BYO and it's nice and warm inside with heather is every room. (spicy curry- just want you need on a cold auckland night)
Julie Davis
My husband and I went to Mekong-Neua this evening. This was the worst dining experience we have ever had. After one and a half hours we were still without food. It took 45 minutes to get a glass of wine. There were four other groups in the part of the restaurant that we were in and each table was complaining to the waiting staff asking when there food was coming. One of the tables had three small children and they were very angry and rightly so. They started screaming at the staff that they had been there two hours and still had not had their main course. We could see we would have been waiting at least another hour so paid for our drinks and left. The staff were arguing among themselves. Our waitress told us it was her first night and there were no systems in place. It was a disaster and I would recommend not visiting the restaurant. They have serious issues to sort out.
Sarah Horner
I've been here a few times with friends and have always enjoyed the meal. The staff are friendly and the food is really tasty!
I love how they do BYO and it's nice and warm inside.
I'm a girl and whenever I order a curry to be 'hot' most asian restaurants make it quite mild (Maybe they think I can't handle it haha) so I was very impressed when I said for my curry to be hot they actually made it hot!
Angeline
Following my feedback of a previous experience at this restaurant, I need to update my post.

The owner of Mekong Neua made contact with me regarding the somewhat negative comments and made a significant effort to understand what went wrong.

I was impressed with his passion and desire to improve his restaurant and decided I would try the restaurant again at some stage in the future. I did so for dinner on Sunday and left absolutely impressed. The service was faultless with every staff member attentive, courteous and very welcoming. The meals were timely and delicious. Furthermore, when I arrived home with a "Doggy Bag", there was a note inside with a courteous advice on re-heating the food to ensure quality and safety.

It is a pleasure to update my rating. I am a local resident and if this great service and food continues, I will be back regularly.

Congratulations to Mekong Neua staff and Management.

Feedback in August:
I'm a local resident and a vegetarian so Thai caters well to my culinary wants. The food tends to be okay so I have ordered takeaway meals from here for an easy dinner on several occasions. I have also dined in a few times. The food has ranged from disappointing to great. The service however has been consistently disappointing. The waiting staff are rude and arrogantly couldn't care even when you point out their behavior is unacceptable. I have decided, there are far too many great Thai options in Auckland to have to suffer through this one. I'd say that I have made my last visit.
Matthew Harley
My wife and I went to the Kingsland restaurant on a deal voucher on Sunday night and the food and service was excellent - especially the whole fried fish and also the chicken satay and pad Thai was some of the best we've had from anywhere! The staff were also very welcoming and friendly and the restaurant was very busy, we will go back for sure!
Bernadine Phillips
We bought a deal voucher, rung Kingsland Monday lunch time and they allowed us to make a reservation that same night. Service was good. My soup special didn't look that great but it was yummy & spicy. My partner and I ordered the same main which was stir fried whole prawns for me and scallops for him with vegies, garlic sauce and i added cashews. We both got a lot of seafood and it was very tasty. Only disappointment was that the veggies were were pretty much a plate full of green beans!!
Stacie P
I bought a voucher for this restaurant. After I bought it all extra terms you can't use Friday, Saturday or Monday, when you call to book and tell them you have a voucher thay are booked out. What a waste of my time and money the voucher was. I will never go to this restaurant.
Lauren Johnson
Order takeaway for dinner, food was really lacking flavour. We had a curry which was watery and potatoes under cooked (massaman). Chicken cashew nut stir fry also lacking flavour and not many cashews. We live in walking distance so thought we would try our local, wasn't a great first impression we probably won't go back.
Nishiyaman
Best SE ASIA restaurant in New zealand that i have been to. Have been here 5-6 times and find the service here to be lovely. The have Beer Lao which is always good in one way or another.
The menu is good and included LARB which can be serviced with snapper . The Lao sausage dish is also good! Also the Papaya salad is nice.
For Desert the Mango rice is amazing. YUM!
Be sure to book as they do get busy ass!
Julie
This place is GREAT! food is amazing and service is good!
I really enjoyed my time here, and will def be coming back! (:

We have been to Mekong Neua heaps of times over the past three years. In our view it is the best Thai in Auckland - and definitely the best Lao food we have had outside of Laos.

The service is warm, and they treat all customers like regulars. The staff really are superb.

We would recommend to anyone!

My first time there with friends and it was an awesome experience! Service was 100% and the food was absolutely wonderful. Generous servings and the rice just kept coming. One thing though, the flies hanging around our table were annoying!! Other than that, very good!!

I love this place. Great food and waiters that will flirt with anything that moves. It can get a bit noisy when it's full.

We are now regulars at Mekong Neua, and very much enjoy the food and atmosphere.
Service there is unobtrusive, and there is always a friendly face at the desk asking how we enjoyed our meals.

Our favourites are the Red Duck Curry and the Vegetable Sam Ros. We tried the Thai Fried Rice for the first time last weekend too, yum!

Whenever we have been seated somewhere we aren't happy with, it has never been a problem for us to move to another available table of our choice.

Been here several times and my experiences varied from very good or bad. Cosy and a romantic place to dine out. The food is no doubt one of the best cuisines in Auckland at times but the staff sometimes can ruin the evening with their utter rudeness.

Had dinner there last week and my main was not as I expected; it just seem to lack flavour and blonked on the plate. I have had better there and the waitress in training was extremely polite.

Excellent food that comes in generous portions.

Great atmosphere, with overtly camp waiters that add to the authentic Thai/Lao experience.

Definitely recommended for a good night... if you're after a quiet meal for two, stay at home...

This was our 5th and last time at Mekong Neua, the food was good but a waitress was very rude to the degree that we almost walked out. There are plenty of other Thai Restaurants to choose from so we won't be back.

Excellent food, but extremely rude and poor service. We were asked to sit next to the toilets and had a waitress barge in between us having a conversation to check out table number. We ordered pina colada and the listing was not in the menu, when we asked how much they were- the waiter brought the entire sign post from the road to show us the price. Since it was Valentines Day, there were limited seating, unfortunately the sitting crew literally asked us if we were not happy with where we were seated then they were happy for us to leave. They refused to cater the entire menu for Vegetarian option- instead they only had Green Curry as a "curry" option.

Good vegetarian menu which is great! great atmosphere. i loved sitting by the window enjoying a meal and people watching!

Good, sturdy Thai cuisine in a pleasant atmosphere. Two of our group of four were vegetarian and found out the hard way that the Combo Platter is all meat, but the menu has an adequate vegetarian section so the mistake was entirely their fault. The service was also good, and the overall price was reasonable, no doubt partly because it's a BYO restaurant.

I've been here a few times and it's always been great food and great service. I reckon the best time to would be late in the week perhaps on a Thursday night, when it's busy but not crazy busy. Saturday's would have to be the busiest time so reservations are necessary if you want a table. The food here is delicious! Generous portions! Great Prices!

Always a fantastic restaurant and BYO. Try the fresh spring rolls from the specials board, always a hit!

Mekong Neua has been around a while and the cozy atmosphere still remains. The decor sings of South East Asian charm and the fireplace radiates with welcome warmth on a cold evening.

I dined with a party of 7 from work and we were all impressed with the impeccably dressed table. Our group was sat by the fireplace which was a bonus too!

I had the moneybags as a starter and truly enjoyed the textures, ranging from the crunch of the shell to the softness of the filling. I've had moneybags at other eateries and they tend to be over fried and too hard on the outside. In the words of Goldilocks this was 'just right!'

The options were plentiful but I settled for the classic chicken green curry for my main. The sauce was tasty with a delicate blend of lemon grass and coconut flavours. The meat was tender and had enough heat to clear up the passageways. Washed down with a Chang beer, this dining experience made me forget about the dismal weather outside.

Thankfully the food and service at Mekong Neua is still as strong as ever and I will certainly come back. Even the over-the-top orchestral music made me smile - life and dining out should always be this fun.

Really good food but a bit more expensive than the competition. Try the whisky duck
