Review Sumthin Dumplin - Auckland Central

Very nice dumplin. The regular size , 6 pieces, $14. There are seats inside the store.

There is always a huge line in front of sumthin dumplin so i went there.. and it was fantastic! You can select the flavor and sauce. I would recommend adding some chili! It’s not that spicy and is a great combination!!

Pork n cabbage dumplings were amazing, almost missed out in getting them after the lunch time rush. Thankfully we got the last eight. Highly recommend these ones over all the others flavors (tried beef n cheese at another sumthin dumplin , wasn't a fan)

Hard working staff. Friendly, fast, helpful and gave great recommendations. They have pay wave unlike the shops in the Korean town. Very clean place. That’s always assuring. The food looked appealing and tasted great. I love watching the people prepare the dumplings through the glass window. There is a lot of that around here. So refreshing to be able to watch your meals getting made. You would definitely come back.

Sumthin Dumplin never fails to satisfy my dumpling cravings 🤤. I’ve just about had all of their dumplings varieties and the OG and Great White are some great ones to start off with, pair it with the sumthin sesame/sriracha sauce and it’s all gooood 👍

Got the OG with their chili. The dumplings are great, love the contrast of textures between the dough on too, the springy filling and the crusty yet mochi-like bottom. The sauce was just okay, it was kind of jammy but not in a good way. I'll get a different sauce nice time, because the dumplings were real nice.

As you head into the shop you can see them make the dumplings by the windows at the entrance. It was closed when we arrive just before 6pm because they had a large order that was being made. They did hand out fortune cookies while we waited. There was already a line and the shop wasn't even open yet. Large menu on top of the counter so its easy to see what they have to offer, as well as the sizes, regular with 6 or large with 10. You can smell the cooking dumplings as you wait in line. We ordered and managed to get one of the few seats in the store. Most people just took their orders outside to eat them piping hot. The dumplings came with a sauce of your choosing. They also had other things on the menu like tofu fries and shakes, but they weren't available when we were there. The dumplings were bready. I was expecting something more akin to a gyoza. Flavours were nice. We had the OG and the 3 spice prawn. Tasted nice with and without the sauce. I felt it was more snackish than a meal though (otherwise you might end up ordering all the dumplings).

A great takeaway food option in downtown Auckland. The dumplings are delicious, the staff friendly and efficient. Did not have to wait long in the middle of the lunchtime rush. There are a couple of stools inside and more seating outside on the street. A bonus is that they offer wholemeal dough wraps!

Bloody good dumplings/potstickers. If you like a bit of a shake up on the conventional dumpling, someyhing slightly fried but moist and saucy. Id recommend giving these guys a try. I got the Beef n Cheese regular (6 pieces) and it is actually perfect for lunch. Friendly bunch too that are happy to explain why their dumplings are different.

I have eaten a lot of dumplings in my life, and nothing quite compares to the dumplings at this place. The dumplings are fresh and absolutely delicious. Every bite was memorable and it just gave you that incredible sensation. Prices are fair and despite the long queues they serve your order within 5-10 minutes. This place is a must visit, whether you are a dumpling-lover or not.

So amazing food! So yum! And the staff was ssoooooo friendly! Highly recommend! :)

Tasty food! Super filling. Vegetarian friendly. Takeaway only. Office crowd and The lines are long. I can see why there is a second branch on Lorne st too. Only complaint - people get hangry and cut lines all the time -how to police this?

I had read so many raving reviews about this place, so decided to give it a try. Of course I got to try them only because of a motorcycle meet up that happened there. This really is like a hole in the wall kind of place that churns our fantastic dumplings. I had the 3 spice dumplings with their Sumthin Dumpling sauce, even the regular portion of 6 pieces was very very filling. A combination of steam and pan fried is how they make them and serve them with a sauce of your choice.<br/>About 5 dumplings later I was struggling to put the last one away, but due to the beauty of the flavours it wasn’t too hard to finish.<br/>Will be back soon to try out the Great White next!!!<br/>

Could not say more other than amazing! Their dumplings are just so simple but so good. Chili sauce is so delicious too

Convenient location, very fresh made.<br/>The best choice is beef and cheese, add their special chilli source, perfect!
Crackerjacker
Someone told me this was the best dumpling they've ever tried, I was like ok sure. I tried it later on and omg they are fabulous! I got the shrimp ones i don't know what makes them so good but the fillings and the outer as well as the sauce just make kt
Saajan
Very tasty dumplings. Their chilly sauce is the best. You see chilly, oil, peanuts in the sauce which is very delicious. <br/>Bit expensive I felt but worth it. <br/>No place to sit but the street is people friendly. <br/>Tummy fill - 8/10<br/>Value for money - 9/10<br/>Service - 10/10.

Usually I’m not a big fan of fusion food, I’d prefer more authentic flavours. However, I decided to give this place a try as my colleague kept raving about it. It was actually not bad, although I don’t think they should be called dumplings, they are more like ‘buns’. I ordered beef and cheese buns, and the ‘monk’ veggies buns. The filling is yum and I like seeing chefs making buns right in front of you. I felt like the bun skin is a big too thick, if only they could make more efforts into rolling thinner bun skins.

Came in yesterday because friend really wanted to try Sumthin Dumplin for afternoon tea. We got 'the monk', which was a vegetarian option. It had mushrooms and bok choy inside. Sumthin dumplins felt more like a bao then a dumpling to me. Would prefer it with less dough but loved the filling. Customer service was really good though. Lady at the cashier was patient and recommended different sauces to us.

4.5 <br/>Great fast food, love seeing the dumplings being made. Delicious filling and crispy skin, great sauces. Perhaps increased selection would be good but the classics are great and friendly staff
Dora The Food Explorer
Love their dumplings! Had the OG which is pork and extra chilli oil and siracha mayo. The pieces are pretty large so 6 pieces were more than enough for me. Service was super fast too!

It's a nice little shop of o'Connell street. Love their chicken dumplings specially with their sumthin chilli sauce. A must have if you are in cbd. I have tried their veg dumplings, found it little dry for my taste. Otherwise my go to lunch place.

Came here for dinner last night. Its quite a small place with limited seats so def more suited for takeaways. We ordered the Beef and Cheese regular set of dumplings with chilli and a large set of OG dumplings with sesame. Taste wise , the beef and cheese dumplings had more flavour than the OG. The OG was OK but I personally thought it was weird that they had huge chunks of cabbage in them. The sesame sauce was nice while the chilli sauce just tasted like regular chilli oil. Service was friendly and efficient and the price was OK considering the size of the dumplings and their portions. I would come back to try their vegetarian option and eat their beef and cheese dumplings again.
Lisa
I was super excited to try these dumplings, but unfortunately I was very disappointed. They lacked flavour and very bland. Pastry was thick and chewy. Special chilli was not very special, maybe I missed something?
HJ
Been meaning to try this place for a while but being in the city makes it hard to get to when you don’t work or live nearby and it’s only open one day in the weekend. We popped in on a Friday around 2pm and they had already sold out of their vegetarian dumplings.. apparently that’s normal and happens daily so get in quick is vege is your go to. I ordered the Great white - chicken, mushroom and with spicy chilli sauce. The dumplings are more like mini steam buns with a slightly crispy outer. They are a decent size and I found the regular size (6) to be just right. The dumplings had plenty of meat filling but it was quite bland to be perfectly honest. I’m glad I went with the spicy chilli sauce (much like your usual dumpling oil) as that took them to a whole new level. The sauce was the star of the dish for sure! <br/><br/>Cute little shop with a few seats inside and public benches outside. Staff were good and the dumplings were ready in minutes.
Sai
The dumplings and their sauces weren’t made good over the past few visits to this place. Looks like the quality has gone down.
Mireya Pepen
Too greasy and tasteless, dry and above all the dumplings where burnt. <br/>see picture to have a better idea what kind of low quality distasteful this dumpling from Sumthin are.  When I complained I was contacted by someone on facebook and they told me they don't clean the saucepan where they fry the dumplings! Great! how hygienic! food and safety administrator should visit this place sometime...
James
Heard a lot of good things about this place so went to try it out. Had Half The OG and half Beef and Cheese.<br/><br/>The OG didn't really have any flavour and the pork was dry. Nothing a little soy sauce won't fix... However I didn't see any soy sauce in sight. My main issue with these ones are the massive hard chunks of cabbage. Not really enjoyable.<br/><br/>The beef and cheese ones were much better, had more flavour and it's nice to see different and unusual combinations for dumplings.<br/><br/>The wrapping is very doughy and more like mushed bread.<br/><br/>One positive is how fast the service is. Even if there is a long line, you won't be waiting more than 5 minutes.<br/><br/>Just wish they had soy sauce.

Sumthin' Dumplin is offering tradiitonal dumplings with a twist to to the masses.<br/><br/>Ever since they opened, Sumthin Dumplin has become a popular spot for those wanting their dumpling fix in town. Located near Chancery Square , you will often find a queue outside at lunchtime as people wait to grab these simple yet delicious bites for lunch.  You can stand on the street and watch the dumplings being made in the small kitchen through the window too. Specialising in Shanghainese dumplings with a contemporary twist, the fillings are a mix of traditional and fusion. There are the traditional fillings like the classic combination of pork and cabbage (aptly named 'The OG') or prawn and chive ('3 Spice') available, as well as more unheard of dumpling fillings such as the Beef & Cheese - their take on the favourite Kiwi mince and cheese pie. Other concoctions include their vegan/vegetarian option, 'The Monk' which comprises of tofu, mushroom and bok choy, and the ‘Great White’—shredded chicken breast with white and shitake mushrooms all encased in a wholemeal wrap. All topped with sauces such as siracha and chili!<br/><br/>For dumplings, they are rather big - I would probably consider it to be more of a mini bun with huge dollops of filling and its crisp pan fried base, which I love, wrapped in a thick skin. Different to the typical dumpling, I do think their dumplings are more catered towards Kiwi taste but it's still very tasty!<br/><br/>Check out my insta @ohmyfoodiegoodie to follow more of my tried eats!

I took away "Beef & Cheese w Sumthin Chilli (mild)" and "3 Spice ( Prawn) w Sumthin Sesame".<br/><br/>By the time I got home, a lot of oil was absorbed to the packet making them less calories.<br/>They were both filling.<br/><br/>"Beef & Cheese" one was popular with my family members.<br/>I liked the mild chilli sauce better than sesame one.

Tried it after hearing about them so much. Ordered the great white chicken dumplings. They were pretty good, but werent amazingly great. I found the meat to be a tad too salty and the wrap a bit too thick. The price was ok, as the individual dumplings’ size was pretty decent and filled with minced chicken meat.
Foodie Georgie
After coming across this place on insta I couldn’t wait to try it out, and boy, it did not disappoint! I ordered a large lot of mince and cheese dumplings to share between two which was plenty as the dumplings were massive and filled us both up... AND for the flavour, they were absolutely delicious, given a good spicy kick from our added sriracha mayo😋 Service was super speedy too. Will definitely be returning to try out the rest of the menu!
Lala
Tasty dumplings that are very popular to Aucklanders. Every time we go past this place it's always full and the line is always long. Decided to give it a go and I'm really impressed by how they put their own twist to traditional dumplings. Definitelt worth a try!

I chanced upon Sumthin Dumplin and saw a cue up to the door so naturally, I got curious and checked the place out. The place was small but bustling with their crew like clockwork going around making dumplings. Their menu was limited but all choices seemed so interesting. Finally chose The Monk (veggie dumpling) and 3 Spice (because I love seafood) and got their special chilli sauce with both. I loved it and can’t wait to try the rest on the menu. Pricing is reasonable, service is fast, crew is accommodating.

Fusion dumpling takeaway! They have a very small menu but they do it well. I tried meat dumplings and vegetarian dumpling , they are huge dumplings ( it a mini bun with pan fried base which is a little crispy) , it comes with a sauce of your choice , the chilli mayo was great ! <br/><br/>A regular is more than enough for me as lunch ( for some reason they gave me 7 instead of 6 this time...?) , ordering a large you can ask to mix 2 favour of dumplings :)

Finally had the opportunity to try our sumthin dumplin after it was so so busy when it first opened! <br/><br/>Staff were very lovely and served me very quickly! I ordered the 3 Spice dumplings (regular) with sriracha mayo. <br/><br/>I honestly have to say that these were some of the best dumplings I’ve had! The bottom of the dumpling is super crispy and gives a gorgeous crunch texture. The inside of the dumpling is stuffed with filling and big bits of king prawn. And the sauce matches so well to provide a creamy texture. I throughly enjoyed these dumplings and highly recommend sumthin dumplin if you happen to be in town!

A lovely little dumpling shop in cbd.Been here a couple times and always good. Dumplings were yummy and fresh - you can even see them making the dumpling from the window. My favourite is the beef and cheese with chili oil, quite pricey but worth every penny
G
Nice cute little place in a nice location. A little expensive for what is essentially bao styled dumplings (bigger and thicker skin than normal dumplings) but the taste was excellent.
Semin Kim
Super duper duper good!!!! Totally recommend!! You'll regret not getting the large like us, we got the monk with sesame and chilli sauce and it was so delicious. Definitely coming back again!

<br/>I took these dumplings home and it takes about 20/30mins drive to get there. I was surprised that the dumplings were still crispy on the bottom and skin was still easy to bite to, instead of going stale and cold during the drive. I was impressed by that, hence the 5☆ rating.<br/><br/>Overall; huge sized dumplings, generous fillings, crispy pan fried bottom with delicious spicy mayo. Quick service & friendly staff.<br/><br/>🥟🥟🥟🥟🥟 5/5 dumpling points.<br/><br/>Ps. Didnt get to take a photo because I was too hungry that day 😅<br/>

My friend took me here for lunch. I am always interested for dumplings. Very unique compared to most dumplings place. food is good, dumplings are large and tasty. I had a mix of great white (chicken one), and beef & cheese. Both taste amazing. Very satisfying and fulfilling meal. Received friendly service too.<br/>Taste 4.5/5<br/>Service 4/5<br/>Ambiance 3.5/5<br/>Value (price and portion size) 3/5

The OG really is the OG. Different to your standard dumpling but not in a bad way! Bottom was nice and crisp and the mix or vinegar and chilli oil was perfect with the rich pork of the dumplings. Have been back many times!
Sorry_vonguenumber
Such a little gem. The menu is small but the dumplings are amazing. Love the chilli sauce on the beef and cheese dumpling. Good friendly and fast service.

Seen this place all over my gram so had to check it out! And I was impressed! Great service, good sized dumplings and yum flavours! Most probably the best dumplings I’ve ever had. <br/><br/><br/>Will definitely be back.

Taste: 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑<br/>Interior Deco: 🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑<br/>Customer service: 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑<br/>Recommend: 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑<br/>Finally trying out this place! Crispy and fresh! Tried the Beef&cheese, great white as well as the 3 spice prawn with sumthin chilli sauce on top, the sumthin chillin sauce taste similar to that popular Chinese “Lao Gan Ma chilli black bean sauce”. Overall pretty good!

LOVE LOVE LOVE this place !! The great white dumplings with the siracha mayo are the best! The beef and cheese dumplings are fabulous as well. I’m studying abroad in Auckland and this has become my favorite place. I will miss it so much when I finally have to leave. DELICIOUS!!!!

I had the regular monk with chili sauce. I waited for quite a while and some customers who ordered after me, even got their orders before me. Luckily I was not in a hurry so I didn't mind the waiting. <br/>The dumpling wrap was a bit thick and chewy, which I liked, and the bok choy brought some crunchy. I didn't see much tofu in my dumplings though. I loved the chili sauce!<br/>Overall, nice dumplings worth the wait and friendly service that makes up for the wait.
Karen
I've been here a few times now and this place is good if you want some hearty dumplings! The sauces really change the overall taste. the pastry is a little on the thicker side though so might not be for everyone. These are the vege dumplings and must say they are one of the best vege dumplings I have had!
Tinos.adventure
I really liked this place! The place is super small but super cute with a short and simple menu and the prices are completely reasonable. <br/><br/>The staff is really nice and as helpful as possible and they are quick and efficient. <br/><br/>The dumplings were absolutely amazing and everything I hoped they’d be. I got the beef and cheese and they were perfect because they weren’t too cheesy. However I will say the they were really greasy and it got kind of sickening towards the end.
TMJ L
No lines - winning! I got the large OG (small would have been enough for a lunch meal! I got greedy). Came out super quick, topped with spring onion and swimming in the chilli oil (which is super mild, can you do a spicy version with some vinegar??). The dumpling themselves (or fried buns) they were a bit bland but they are kinda addictive. I think its that fried bottom that got me. Will definitely be coming by again when I'm craving dumplings
The Poor Foodie
Food: 4.5/5<br/>Service: 4/5<br/>Overall: 4/5<br/><br/>Their chilli sauce was addictively good! I ordered the monk (vegetarian dumplings) and the fillings were tofu, boy choy, mushroom which gave different textures. Tbh I would see them more like a little bao but not dumplings but nvm as long as they tasted good:) the bottom of the dumplings was pan fried until crispy 👍🏻👍🏻 <br/>one thing that I felt slightly disappointed was that I saw other’s pictures of the vegetarian dumplings and they looked super green (because of the spinach wrap) but mine looked just slightly green though 🤔🤔
Food2belly
| Spinach dumplings |<br/>-<br/>Not many dumpling stores in town, great to see home cooked comfort food. Their sumthin special oil was different. But I still think I prefer my dumplings dripped into a sweet sauce. The dumplings were pan fried well. A crispy base with a chewy wrapper filled with vegetables but the wrapper was too thick compared to the traditional ones.
Amit Tripuraneni
Ordered the OG but after a wait they turned out to be bad batch so I was given option to get the Great White instead. Dumplings are OK but their chilli toppings are great and that's what makes the dumplings good.  Worth a try if you're in the area and looking for decent dumplings.
Taylor
By far my favourite place to eat when I get a chance! The beef and cheese is by far my favourite accompanied by siracha mayo. Good price for the size and amount of dumplings. Fresh and hand made. Just a shame are open a bit later on a Saturday and closed on a Sunday
João Plácido
Probably the best dumpling place in Auckland!<br/>Doesn't have much variety of dumplings but all of them are to die for.<br/>Don't have much more to say...everyone should give it a try.

Craving to try this since last year, passed by the shop a couple time during holiday but they closed till last Friday i’m lucky enough to manage arrive there right before they closed the shop.. ordered 3spice regular one with sriracha mayo sauce.. the dumpling really good and the sauce is match perfectly.. love it.. and also i got extra dumpling 😍🥰😍🥰 my lucky day LoL

I have seen so many posts about this place and finally had a chance to go. The place is clean and tidy with friendly service. I ordered regular 3 Spice Prawn - king prawn, pork mince, chives and etc. with sumthin chilli sauce. Had to wait about 10mins for dumplings to be cooked. First bite was like meh - a bit disappointed because there is nothing special about the taste like what people raved about it. Probably I had too high expectation but I couldn’t taste any spice like the menu name claimed. They are just big dumplings with good portion of fillings. The sauce was just like those red bottle Chinese chilli oil you can buy from Asian grocery. Every dumpling has big piece of prawn inside that you can really feel and taste though. Overall I don’t think I will go back there because there is nothing special about their dumplings. And with the price like that I can buy dumplings somewhere else with similar/better taste and cheaper price.
Luke
Today I tried The OG with chilli sauce and it was truly fantastic. The chilli sauce they use made these dumplings taste superb. Will definitely be returning.
Tiki Zang
My friend took me there because she said there always a queue so we decided to have a try. After tried, let me be honest, I don’t like it. <br/>First, technically, it’s not dumping, it’s bun, fried buns. The name is very confusing. When I asked the staff what exactly it is, he replied this is Shanghai dumplings. As a traditional Shanghainese, sorry, it’s not, not even closed. But this definitely would leads to the misleading of the customer about Chinese food.<br/>Secondly, as a traditional fried buns, the wrap should be thin and the filling should be with soup. That’s the best part of fried buns. I understand this is more like modern dish but I would believe it should combine the features of eastern and western cuisine.<br/> I have to say the presentation and the idea is amazing but i really hope they can thinking about elevating the taste as well.
Bayley
Incredible dumplings!!! Their house made chilli jam was the highlight followed closely by the prawn dumplings. There is nowhere to sit here though, takeaway only so don’t get caught out like us. Cheeseburger dumplings with the Sriracha mayo are also worth writing home about.
Jai.leong
We ordered the 3 spice prawn and the shop-recommended beef & cheese dumplings (with sriracha). Would go back for the beef any day of the week! Super juicy and flavoursome. Eat up quickly, as our dumplings started to stick to the bottom packaging once we got home!
Ayaan Shaikh
This place is Sumthin' special, they somehow combined western and asian cuisine to bring out the most creative dumplings that stay true to both cultures. Their dumplings are absolutely brilliant, not better, but different to your usual soup dumplings. The beef and cheese dumpling is really really good and their chilli makes it taste so much better while giving it a tasty kick. Would recommend this spot!
Miura Elikana
This little gem is hidden in the heart of the CBD. It has a funky set up. You can watch dumplings being made from scratch while waiting for your order. The dumplings themselves are delicious, my first time eating wholemeal dumpling. I enjoyed the beef & cheese, it had a stronger flavour. The chicken one was good as well but my preference was beef. Will go back to try the other options as well.
Celine Ladegourdie
Their dumplings are sooo nice. But when you make orders to pick up. It’s never done. Always takes an extra 20 minutes on top of the time you’ve given them. If you’re willing to wait for ages for dumplings then this is the place for you
SB
I’ve been here twice so far and I have had the prawn dumplings and the second time I got half of the pork dumplings and half of the vegetarian dumplings. They are more like small fried buns and are not your usual dumpling shape. I must say that the vegetarian dumplings are the tastiest. I couldn’t taste much filling in the pork and prawn dumpling and would have liked it to have a bit more flavour/seasoning .It’s a small place and gets quite busy at lunch hour but otherwise service is quick.I’m keen to go back and try the chicken and beef and cheese dumplings.
Jacqueline Hickey
Insane dumplings! I can’t stop coming back here. Standout has to be the Beef & Cheese (who knew cheese would be so amazing in dumplings) the OC is almost equally as fresh & good. Great selection of sauces - recommend the sriracha. Awesome to see them rolling the dumplings fresh in the window. Get in early before some varieties sell out.
Emily
Went on Saturday night around 6.30 for dinner & ordered a mix box of the prawn & pork and chicken dumplings. They were out of sides so missed out on the fries and salad which I felt like. Prawn dumplings were tasty but chicken were bland, friends had the vege ones and also said they were pretty tasteless. They had also run out of chilli sauce. Overall dumplings were chewy and doughy and really not that great.
RL.P
Vegetarian mushroom dumplings were bland. More wrap than filling. Garnished with spring onions & vinegar sauce did not make it any more appealing. Totally disappointing as service was the opposite & generally, the place is busy so I was really expecting my meal to be good.
Purita Mok
Just had their vegan The Monk dumplings and it was nourishing and yum. For me, it was just the right amount of taste, not that salty and not oily either. I liked how crisp they were on the outside. There were lots of people but the service was quick and efficient, better than other places. Keen to come back!
Magic Bleeds
It was a Friday night & I got the OG - large. The quality of the pork was good, but it was a bit too bland for my taste. Would I go there again? Probably not.

I finally got the chance to visit this place after seeing all the hype about the long lines, and I definitely didn’t leave disappointed.<br/><br/>Service: 10/10<br/>As soon as we entered we were met with warm welcomes. The man at the counter was so friendly and offered us suggestions on what to get since this was our first visit.<br/>They were so approachable and they were making conversation with all the customers.<br/>The dumplings were freshly fried within 10 minutes.<br/><br/>Food: 9/10<br/>The worker suggested we get half and half to try more options, so we went with a regular beef and cheese, and the og.<br/>The dumplings were fried, so they were crispy on the bottom, but chewy and soft on top.<br/>The filling was fatty and juicy, but the flavour was a little overpowered by the sauce.<br/>The large would probably be enough for one person.<br/><br/>Ambiance: 10/10<br/>The cool brick walls and writing give off a street vibe. The lighting is super bright which boosts a more lively surroundings especially at night.<br/>The pop and hip hop music playing caters to younger generations and also supports a more western fusion environment.<br/><br/>This place is a great place for people to try out asian food as the dumplings cater toward westerners while still maintaining a level of authenticity.<br/>
Karen Dias
This was my first time here and the experience was not a good one. The dumplings were super oily and the base was basically burnt making it difficult to eat. They did not look anything like what people posted in their photos. Sorry, but do not recommend this place.
Dxlche
We ordered the OG Dumplings. Not exactly a dumpling , it’s technically a bun. Closer to a 生煎包. But that aside, it was prepared very quickly, literally two seconds after we paid. <br/>The spicy sauce wasn’t too spicy and it went really well with the dumplings. The bottoms were crispy. The dumpling itself flavoursome too. <br/>

Sumthin Dumplin is within walking distance from my work (literally across the street) and our office as a whole has bought sumthin dumplin a fair few times over the last couple of months. <br/><br/>The Dumplings themselves are very tasty, a nice thick wrap and wholefood ingredients to make them stand out from other dumpling places. I like the chilli oil and peanut combo to give it an extra boost. <br/><br/>However, over the last couple of visits, we have all started to notice the dumplings are getting smaller in size. When we use to order a 6 pack the takeaway try would be completely full of large dumplings, but the last few batches have been lacking in the same size and a little burnt on the bottom from time to time. <br/><br/>This isnt entirely a put off, but for the price, I would expect decent size dumplings to fill the tray on every order.
Saskia Kiefte
Food: the dumplings were really good, I love the thicker wrapping & the fillings were all quite unique. My family & I tried every flavour and they were all really tasty. I personally am not a fan of the beef & cheese, but my sisters liked it so that’s just personal preference, and it is definitely something that makes this place unique. <br/>My only "complaint" is that it is a little pricey for the amount you get, but this is a trendy place in the CBD so I guess you kind of come expecting that.<br/><br/>Service: amazing service. They were busy but polite, and they accidentally gave my dad 6 dumplings when he ordered 10, and he just went and told them so they gave him 6 more for the "inconvenience" which was lovely. Service makes such an impact on you, and that small gesture left a positive impression so I will definitely be back. <br/><br/>Ambience: not really anywhere to sit inside, but it was a mild Auckland day out today so we just sat outside on the benches which worked well. The dumplings come in sturdy packages so it is easy to eat out of without a table.

So I’m changing my review because my second experience with sumthin dumplin was great!<br/><br/>We ordered our team lunch from here and they were happy to accommodate a large order so last minute. We were also given notice that the dumplings take 10 mins to cook so they organised a time slot for us to pick it up. <br/><br/>The whole team was very impressed and saying how it’s the best dumplings they’ve had! The Great White was the most popular!<br/><br/>However our vegetarian in the team didn’t like mushrooms :( and she wasn’t able to eat the Monk. Maybe include another vegetarian option for picky eaters.

Tried this today for a quick snack during a non busy time around 5pm so the wait was quick and we got our food within 5 minutes of waiting. We ordered a large size, shared between the 2 of us. Presentation looked amazing. I enjoyed the dumplings mainly because it's different from other dumplings you would get from Chinese restaurants. The pastry is slightly thicker - it was crispy at the bottom and not dry which I liked. I had the pork flavour which tasted average but not bad at all although I would prefer for the chili sauce to be less oily. I would definitely come back and try the others in the menu!
BaNaNa
The place is cute, presentation was nice and I liked how crispy it was... however I wished there was a bit for flavour as it was a wee bit bland for me. They’re alright so not worth the wait if there is a long line but wouldn’t mind going in if there’s a short wait and I wanted something quick <br/>Also the opening times need to be up dated
Glenn Evans
Very good dumplings, had the 3 spice prawn with siracha mayo, good generous filling were yummy, will return, $9 serving ample for one, very clean and friendly staff.
Navdeep
Love me some good dumplings! Something different for sure. I got the chicken & mushroom flavour and it was pleasantly interesting. The dumplings were nice and crunchy, I think they’re deep fried? The sauce is quite oily too which is probably the only downfall. <br/><br/>All in all, the concept of the dumplings is new and Auckland needed a new dumpling stop so yeah glad I tried it out (when it wasn’t that busy). 😬<br/><br/>Definitely would go back again!
Danielle Southwick
Had the vegan dumplings, while they are very filling and fresh I found them very oily and lacking in flavour. <br/>Great presentation of food though.

Had the vegetarian dumplings and found them really bland and tasteless. The bottom of them were also over cooked. Perhaps the meat ones have more flavour but for me being a vegetarian I wouldn’t come back. Unfortunately they were out of the sides so I wasn’t able to try them either.

I will start by saying that I’ve only been here once (today in fact) but it left such an indelible impression that I will definitely be returning! <br/><br/>I popped in to grab something for lunch and thankfully got a large serve as I had a sneaky suspicion that I would end up sharing them with my hubby (who had already had lunch), which I did. <br/><br/>We had a mix of dumplings and tucked into pork & cabbage and prawn & chives. They were utterly delicious (my favourite was the prawn which were very generously proportioned and soooo good) with enough crispness to the underside to make the perfect mouthful and a half. Don’t be shy of the chilli relish, it doesn’t blow your socks off, and it adds the X factor to the dumplings. <br/><br/>Service was friendly and helpful and food was ready within 5 minutes. <br/>

Wait times are actually not too bad. The problem is the product itself. They look nice, which might be good for Instagram, but taste wise.....well. Fillings make up a very small portion of the dumpling. Most of it is just flour. These dumplings aren't 'dumplings', more like pan fried flour buns. Won't be back.

New place opened up on o'connell street. Pretty good dumpling buns but be prepared for a very long wait. We waited about 20-30mins because they couldnt keep up with demand at the time.<br/><br/>They actually ran out of dumplings and asked people to wait while they made more to keep up with the orders. The dumpling buns are hand made and the staff making them looked absolutely exhausted.

Got some mean LA Chinatown vibes from this place. People are complaining about the 'wraps', but remember they use wholemeal and a spinach dough in most of the flavours. I'm keen for steamed! (cause I can't eat oily all the time). You guys would make bank out of xiao long bao I reckon. And maybe think about using ginger?<br/><br/>I know it's early days so they hadn't sussed the shakes and iced teas yet, and they're almost there with speed, but I'm definitely coming back! Churr I had a mean lunch though

Pre dope, never had fusion dumplings before but it was yum yum. Nice and crispy with warm and joocy fillings. I recommend the non-conventional beef and cheese dumplings! (Photo shows prawn but whatevuHHHHH they're both yum)

Colleague brought some into the office for us to share. Presentation was amazing but tasted very mediocre.  She ended up eating a couple and leaving the rest (she'd purchased two boxes). The sauce outshone the dumpling filling which imo was too bland. Filling definitely needs more seasoning, ginger and spring onions; just some oomph to give it life. <br/><br/>I've had much better from the dumpling stalls in Taiping unfortunately.

Went there with my friends during lunch time, we ordered the og with chilli sauce but they ran out of the og so we decided to order the 3 spice one. Love the vibe and the customer services. Definitely would go back again to try the og👌🏻

Mixed feelings about this place - I had the beef and cheese dumplings. Like others have said, not traditional with a lot more dough than your average dumpling. That wasn't an issue for me, the issue was the bottom was over-cooked, burnt really, which dried the whole thing out. Forgetting the burnt bottoms, I felt like the ingredients were fresh but the seasoning was off which left it a bit bland overall. They were out of a number of sides we tried to order as well. Service was friendly and it was busy, hence the rushing I'd say.

DUMPLINGS😊<br/><br/>These arnt your ordinary dumbling, nor traditional. I wouldn't say they are the best dumplings ive ever had, but they are comforting. Usually when I go there, theres a bit of a line. If the line was to long, is it worth the wait? No. Not really. Do I think about these dumplings? Yes. Taste is really good(maybe abit to doughy for some), heart warming taste, Good service, petite, pretty lovely place to be in, hand made and just eye catching (Smart location). One thing Im not quite sure about is one of the mothers wearing a ring while doing the dough. Not really hygienic. But other than that Sumthin Dumplin you keep up the good work!

I saw it on social media and really wanted to try it out, walked in on a wednesday night around 8ish, I couldnt decide which one to get so they offered to do a mix pack for me because they werent very busy! So I got to try the pork, beef and chicken! I personally really liked the chicken! I am sure I will be going back to try the vegan🙃

I find the whole concept of the place really cute .Reminds me of how much hard work a mom has to go through in order to make and cook for the family. Good customer service. Approachable. Had a mixture of dumplings ( beef, pork and ?? ) but you know what, just try everything. That’s what us foodie are supposed to do. Overall, love it. ☺️

As you head into the shop you can see them make the dumplings by the windows at the entrance. It was closed when we arrive just before 6pm because they had a large order that was being made. They did hand out fortune cookies while we waited. There was already a line and the shop wasn't even open yet.<br/><br/>Large menu on top of the counter so its easy to see what they have to offer, as well as the sizes, regular with 6 or large with 10. You can smell the cooking dumplings as you wait in line. We ordered and managed to get one of the few seats in the store. Most people just took their orders outside to eat them piping hot. The dumplings came with a sauce of your choosing.<br/><br/>They also had other things on the menu like tofu fries and shakes, but they weren't available when we were there.<br/><br/>The dumplings were bready. I was expecting something more akin to a gyoza. Flavours were nice. We had the OG and the 3 spice prawn. Tasted nice with and without the sauce. I felt it was more snackish than a meal though (otherwise you might end up ordering all the dumplings).

I am constantly on the hunt for good dumplings! <br/>This place has stopped me looking any further. Quite possibly the best dumplings I have ever had! Not only that but I absolutely love the fact it’s family owned. Will defiantly be making the commute from the shore to get my weekly dose of dumplings.

I have been here several times now, and I have enjoyed it everytime! I've tried all the flavours, however Beef and Cheese and the 3 Spice Prawn have always stood out to me, especially because I am Chinese my tastebuds definitely lean more towards the 3 Spice! I love the concept of the family owned business and the fact that they are appreciating all customers, which is why it is Asian Fusion. I think it works really well together, and the sauces really do go well with the dumplings! Staff are always friendly and there is always an awesome vibe everytime you go in. Definitely recommend!

Hands down the best dumplings in NZ! Amazing food, great service and an awesome atmosphere! The owners are extremely friendly and you can sense they all love what they are doing! 100% recommend!

Friendly staff and super busy with queues out the door. There is a small counter with bar stools if you have to eat in but most people eat outside on O'Connell street.<br/><br/>The staff make the dumplings in the window of a tiny space and the owner gives you firm directions on choices of sauces.<br/><br/>Sauces are not very spicy, leaning toward mainstream Pakeha tastes but are still flavourful enough to prevent me whining.<br/><br/>My dumplings were not very hot (temperature wise) but a good size with a substantial amount of filling. They were pan fried.<br/><br/>A great addition to O'Connell street.<br/><br/>

Just got lunch here today and the line was quite long but it is definitely worth the wait. I love the dumplings so much I want more. Just sad that since its busy, we are only allowed to get the regular size(6 pcs) rather than ordering the large with 10 pcs. Definitely need more than just 6. I’m pretty sure they would be able to cope with the capacity. Not that they’re losing profit from selling more but the customers are getting less.
Rachel Kitson
Amazing! Definitely will become the regular dumpling spot. Went at lunchtime on a Tuesday and was told 20 min wait but our order would have been ready in less than 10. Highly recommend the Beef and Cheese and the chilli is delish, almost tastes like some sun-dried tomato in it.  Hoping to try the fries next time as they sound just as delish!

This place is incredible! After hearing so many good reviews we had to try it.<br/>The vegetarian dumplings are amazing!! And filling too.<br/>Also not to mention the staff were super friendly. They've said it has been a hectic few weeks and they are still finding their feet but man give them a chance and you won't regret.<br/>Or just go on a Monday night like we did!

So delicious! The owners are so lovely! Vegetarian option was yummy and the chilli sauce was really good but the siracha/mayo was really yummy too!

Finally a new dumpling place that not only tastes amazing but are sooo visually beautiful too! Make sure you get in early as the demand for these amazing little things are very high and you will see that people will happily stand in line to get these. There’s always a line but the wait is not actually long and totally worth it! I’ve tried all of them and I have to say the monk(vegetarian) is my fav! The beef and mozzarella dumplings are not your traditional filling but really works!! Also can’t forget about the 3 spice which is your pork and prawn dumpling. Friendly and quick service 👌🏽

usually don't write reviews but this place is a breath of fresh air. The food is made in a clean, open kitchen freshly on the spot and the flavours are both authentic and innovative (somehow). Tried the chicken and beef so far, will definitely be back for more!

Nice vibe and decor. Good sized dumplings which looked great. Vegetarian dumpling could do with more flavour and lacked salt, although the chicken dumplings are a bit tastier. Overall the dough seemed a bit bready. For the price I would have expected a better dumpling given the reviews. Perhaps I’ll try another flavour.

There are two things I look for in a restaurant. <br/><br/>1. The food, delicious homemade dumpling. Great serving sizes and awesome home town flavors. I loved the OG most, also make sure you try the chili sauce too. <br/><br/>2. The service, out of all the Asian restaurants in auckland, this small dumpling joint wins on service hands down, even with a hectic lines they are always greeting each customer with a smile. <br/><br/>All and all great staff, awesome food. Would recommend to anyone to all my friends and family.

<br/>Amazing Kiwi-Asian vibes!!!! I loved the Asian fusion, it was splendid to see the mix of Asian food with a kiwi twist!!! The entire shop/brand portrays an original idea which is both intriguing and compelling at the same time. 100% would recommend!

Absolutely loved the dumplings here! The servings were massive for what you pay, and they taste it even better! I'll definitely be coming back soon to try the rest of the menu. Not to mention, the friendly staff and little wait time to get served.

To be honest, Zomato asks all of us to be polite and friendly when it comes for reviews. Unfortunately, that is something I can not oblige with the food that I received today. <br/><br/>The filling taste pretty much the same despite the use of different ingredients. Very bland to say the least. The OG just tasted like grated ginger, and the fibrous ginger are very noticeable. The Great White on the other hand tasted no different to the OG minus the ginger, nonetheless still very much bland bland bland. <br/><br/>The peanut chilli sauce tasted suspiciously <br/> like the 2 dollar a jar LaoGanMa chilli sauce from the Asian grocers. It packs a small punch but lacks the fragrance of a truly outstanding chilli oil.<br/><br/>Overall, at minimum 14.50a large serving. It does not represent a quality to command such high price point. Kudos for attracting large amount of following thus far, but some flavour changes are required if you want to continue to be profitable. This place is a great example of a great idea, but lack good execution and heart. And that is my honest opinion. <br/>

Went tonight around 6.30pm to get dumplings. Lines are massive out the door but turnaround time is super quick. <br/><br/>Service was friendly and our wait time despite the line was super reasonable. <br/><br/>We ordered the 6 piece chicken and mushroom dumplings as well as the 6 piece tofu and mushroom dumplings. <br/><br/>Don’t come here expecting your typical definition of dumplings. They are completely different from the usual thin dumpling skins. I wasn’t a fan at all of the “wrap” texture, it was too thick and did not really suit the filling too much. The actual chicken and mushroom filling was very juicy and cooked well however. The vege filling I found quite bland and lacking any solid flavour (but maybe good from a health rating point of view). <br/><br/>not the biggest fan of this place, and probably won’t try again. But the service size was large and filling. Worth the money in terms of quantity.

ordered beef&cheese and 3 spice prawn with sumthin chilli and siracha mayo. beef and chilli was bit salty but okay, however, could not find any other flavours other than. 3 spice dumpling was too mild that I couldn’t find any flavour. texture of dumplin was okay and satisfied with sumthin chilli sauce.
Sonia Son
Tried chicken and mushroom dumpling the flavour was bit blend and couldn't taste mushroom much but really liked the toppings on the top. Next visit I want to try beef and cheese since the review says that flavour is good.

You can tell they’re new and finding their feet but they’ll be away laughing. I love the small menu, they know what they do and they do it well. There was a massive queue to order which was worth it. Incredible dumplings, perfect filling ratio. Fab flavour. Will definitely be heading back again! (100% recommend mince and cheese - wow!!)

This is a nice place worth trying out. The OG pork ones were average, the monk is nice and has good texture but the beef and cheese and the prawn and pork ones are the winners.<br/><br/>
Sarah
Really liked the OG dumplings- the fried onion flakes on top were a nice touch. The chili sauce was the best we've had. Really friendly staff too 😊

Decided to join the hype and give this place a visit. We got “The Monk” which was a vegetarian option containing tofu, shiitake and bok choy. The outer was a bit doughy but the flavours inside was defs Sumthin else 😉.<br/><br/>The other one was “Beef and cheese” which contained beef and mozzarella. This one was personally my favourite of the two because it wasn’t as doughy as the other one. <br/><br/>The place was quite busy with the line carrying on out of the store but definitely worth the wait! Will be coming back to try the other flavours ☺️.<br/>

Stopped for dumplings at lunchtime today. Ordered regular size chicken dumplings (6) and regular prawns (3). Waited ages and ages. Had to ask twice where my order was (as later orders were being given out to later customers). After 1/2 hour they gave me 2x chicken orders as prawns still weren’t ready (had waited long enough so took them and left - really bad organisation and not good if you are needing a quick lunch takeaway. Dumplings tasty but too long to wait for them to cook them. Won’t be going back again

Had the chance to try some of their food last Friday when they were giving out samples to people and wow, it was yum! <br/><br/>They seem more like pan fried buns than dumplings to me. I'm not sure I'd call them dumplings myself. But I really liked them! The pork was flavourful and not too fatty, so it reminded me a lot of homemade xiao long bao in taste (just without the soup). The dusting of spring onion on top was a very nice touch.<br/><br/>For the vegetarians and vegans, they also do cute little green coloured versions filled with veges and shiitake mushroom. Those were surprisingly good! I'm usually not too sure about fully vege baos, but these were aromatic and chock full of different textures. The sesame seeds sprinkled on top went really well with all the greens.<br/><br/>Overall, really delicious food here that's suited for an on the go snack or meal in CBD. I'd probably recommend taking it away since there's only a little space for standing.
