Review Wise Cicada - Auckland Central

Blanche Mclean
This is probably the best vegan and organic health food cafe in Auckland. They have fairly recently moved to this new bigger location. Great food here and well worth a visit if you want to eat healthy.
BEN YOUSSEF Cyrine
It used to be one of the best vegan cafe but it's now close. I hope a business angel invest in this beautiful project to makes Auckland people enjoy this food again The staff and food were so lovely and the location so great Hope you'll be back

So good, I wish they were open for dinner as well šŸ˜». Completely vegan and gluten free menušŸ‘šŸ»šŸ‘šŸ»šŸ‘šŸ», nice and friendly stuff, no need to wait for long either! Thank you so much!

I have been trying to eat healthy lately, but craving for a dessertšŸ˜œ, Wise Cicada have a good selection of refined sugar free, low carb, healthy dessert, and all taste great~~ I feel so good right now~~ They also have a large selection of organic tea~~
Julia Friedewald
Everything on the menu is gluten free and vegan, which is such a treat for those of us with dietary requirements. The matcha pancakes (pictured) were delicious and filling - I really wanted to buy some cakes from the cabinet to take home as they looked amazing, but after eating I felt too full to even look at cake! Food service was speedy and friendly. Will be back soon

šŸŒŸšŸŒŸšŸŒŸšŸŒŸ This is the exceptional organic and whole food store based in inner city Auckland. There's no other plant based organic store so centrally located. The vegan food is freshly prepared. Best selection of grains, salts and flours. Dedicated and knowledgeable staff. Sukin and Weleda products. Just the best. They stock the amazing Kerikeri tea here which are, in my tea opinion, the most delicious blends assembled in New Zealand. Free parking.
Melissa
Really great store and vegan cafe. The food is delicious and beautifully presented. Lots of menu items and also cabinet options. The cafe is connected to the store and has a really nice atmosphere to relax in whilst having a meal or a drink. All the staff were very nice, attentive and helpful. The store has a pretty wide selection of items including beauty, household and groceries. Managed to find a few unique items too which you wouldn't find in most stores.
Veronica P
Vegan gluten free goodness, nice peaceful atmosphere, very friendly attentive service.

I'm not a vegan, but I come here regularly for lunch. The food is delicious, the staff friendly, and the atmosphere relaxed. You can choose from either the meal or soup of the day or something from the salad bar. All delicious and healthy! They also just opened an outdoor seating area which is nice, although the chairs and tables slightly flimsy and noisy when a train goes past. Great place!

Awesome store with cafe attached. Love these kinds of stores! The only problem is choosing what to eat! Prices are steep as everything is so good for you, so make sure you've got a heavy back pocket. Their vegan raw cheesecakes are šŸ‘ŒšŸ» on point! Love music was playing when I was there. Very cool, hippie vibes āœŒļø

Great selection of natural foods and surprisingly I found corn meal. The cafe has some yummy plant based options for vegans and nutritarians as well as interesting dessert options. I only wish they used dates instead of agave which is highly processed. Looking forward to trying their Sunday roast dinner.
Wayne Fry
The coffee was great and while I didnā€™t try any food, the selection looked really tasty (and thatā€™s coming from a non-vegan). The grocery section had a great selection and a good choice of teas. Free parking in the centre of Newmarket is a definite plus!

Came here for a business lunch. This is a great cafe as long as you dont mind sharing large tables with other people. The food is vegan and it's really nice. The meals are well designed so that you're not left feeling empty. Unfortunately I didnt have time to look around the shop. I would definately go back.
Mark Redmond
I love their selection of sweet treats, i have to get something whenever im around. Meals are very presentable and delicious. Plenty of nutritional content in their range. Staff are always friendly and helpful.
Nora Brophy
This store is the best. Need alkaline water, diatomaceous earth, essential oils, gluten free chocolate wafers, or a bunch of different gemstones and crystals? No problem. The staff are warm, welcoming and helpful (without the pretentiousness often found in health/natural stores).
Amelia Low
Always love having a meal or a drink at Wise Cicada. The food is delicious (especially the salads) and the raw cheesecakes are absolutely divine!! The staff are very friendly and the cafe has a great vibe.

I was so excited to try this place, with its diverse menu of vegan options. The layout of the restaurant is very nice, and I loved the cabinet at the front with a huge range of vegan dips, salads and desserts! On arrival we asked for a table for 2, having to interrupt the staffā€™s conversation, before being told to go and grab a menu from the other side of the counter. We then seated ourselves next to a table which hadnā€™t been cleared and wasnā€™t for a long time despite the eatery being quiet. Once our meals came around, we found the cutlery box was empty and with no napkins. When a customer has to chase the staff up for a knife and fork when the restaurant is almost empty is poor. At first glance, the meals seemed very reasonable. We initially wanted to order the Mexican Bowl, but were advised it has run out. I ordered the Mushroom Stroganoff and James ordered the Burger. However, we were extremely disappointed when the meals were brought out. Jamesā€™ meal cost $24 (with the recommended side of aioli) and was absolutely minuscule in size. Two little beetroot patties, a slice of vegan cheese, some salad inside and a smudge of the aioli on the plate (why recommend extra aioli when thereā€™s already some on the plate?). The aioli tasted more of an American mustard than aioli and was probably recommended as it was the only thing on the plate with some flavour. The beetroot ā€˜pattiesā€™ tasted similar to Ryvita and had a similar consistency. They were impossible to cut and the burger rather fell apart into chunks. He left feeling so dissatisfied having spent so much on a meal that didnā€™t even make a dent on his hunger. For me, a vegan student who is more than used to making delicious meals on a budget, this just feeds the stigma that vegan food is bitsy, inadequate and expensive. My mushroom stroganoff was much better, but I think the sauce was too runny. If more bread had been served with the meal to mop up the sauce it would have been a much more satisfying meal. Was it worth $19? Not at all. On the whole, an eatery that I had heard loads about turned out to be disappointing. Perhaps we would have been happier if weā€™d ordered different meals, but to be honest each meal on a menu should be of equal quality and quantity for its price. Sorry, Wise Cicada.

Hands down the best vegan gluten free place in ALL OF AUCKLAND. Seriously donā€™t bother with any where else. Support this place because itā€™s the best vegan thing going for Auckland

Yummy food, juices and smoothies. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 is because the juice/ smoothie machine is very loud :-( anytime it was used we had to stop our conversation as we couldn't hear each other, even the guy at the counter had trouble taking our order because of the noise. Other than that highly recommend if you are looking for yummy vegan/organic food ;-)

These guys know what to do with plant based food to transform it into deliciousness! Be inspired in the cafe... then grab some ingredients from the shop to recreate at home. Great for kids too... indigo loves to hang out here on a 'play date'! Smoothies, coffee, golden lattes, healthy waffles, salads, curries, raw cacao, raw desserts... healthy scrumptiousness!

Outstanding place and food. My daughters a vegan and took us there for lunch. As a pretty enthusiastic meat was not excited. But I loved it !!!
Helle Johnson
Cant fault the food and friendly service and LOVE the new bigger space. Just wondered why you have such a great breakfast menu but a very small lunch one? Worth considering extending it till past midday or making a lunch menu?
Shar Kra
AMAZING! I had the most wonderful day today at Wise Cicada with my girls. We happily came and hung out for a few hours over lunch and a bit of shopping. The lovely staff even gave us a free hot chocolate each to star in their little insta video. Super friendly, helpful and chatty customer-service. Definitely think that this will be our new hangout spot!! ļæ½ 10/10

We love your breakfast menu and lunch meals. The staff are so friendly and kind. Thanks for the treat today!

The school holiday activities are fantastic fun for the kids at an incredibly reasonable charge The food is absolutely divine with options for nearly every dietary type The people are friendly and kind The store has some hard to find options like plastic free drink bottles, scrubber brushes and lunch boxes
Lisa Love
awesome friendly service love the food must go to place for eating out
Sommer Wagstaff
This place is amazing and the food is great! I had a combo of salads and the red velvet cake! Boom !!! I'll definitely be a regular here when I can make it to Newmarket!!
Tim Whitley
The kitchen is vegan, but sure would be nice if the whole store was!!!! ;) And the pushing of fish oil, which has no health benefits whatsoever... Search for 'fish oil' in the PCRM website for the Truth about fish oil!

Wise Cicada is a cornerstone in the Health & Wellness Community in Auckland City. And they have a Mantra Workshop every Thursday Night!!! ;) <3

We have been so impressed with all of the items we have had. Absolutely loved the Pulled Jackfruit Burger and the kids LOVE the Neopolitan cake! Delicious ļæ½

I've just discovered this place and I love it! Food is amazing, great selection of products and Customer service just incredible. Thank you guys!

Amazing people, beautiful food :) A long time customer now and variety of products never let you down..

| Banoffee cheesecake |
-
Honestly the best banoffee or cheesecake ever and it's vegan! The base is made from cashews giving the cheesecake a beautiful nutty texture and taste. While the filling is a rich coconut cream with a slight sweetness. It's perfect, satisfies any sweet tooth. A bit on the pricey side but great as a treat on a Friyay :)

I would come here more often and spend more than I would normally do (the food is good) but the music they play is horrendous. Not worth it to be blasted with it. Occasionally they will play good house music when one of the employees into it is allowed to put on his own music. But otherwise, you will be inundated with unhealthy, dumb hiphop and other depressing pop music. A health food store should at least play hip world music or some of those cool relaxing mixes played in yoga studios. You feed yourself good food, but you also want to feed your brain. Their usual music just ruins the atmosphere and is inconsistent with the idea of health and high vibrations.
Elaine Rush
Ambience was great, warm compared to outside which was welcome, two slices and two coffees $27 so pricier than anticipated and no receipt with itemised costs. Water was not offered or seen
Yafa_josk
Very delicious options, and very vegan friendly. They have the best vegan deserts Iā€™ve tasted and are largely made without coconut oil (which is high in saturated fats but somehow trending as a health food) so theyā€™re deserts are delicious and healthy! The savoury options are also great and I canā€™t wait to try more!

Very relaxed casual atmosphere. An open dining plan makes for a relaxed but not so private dining experience. They also play great music here which adds positively to the experience.
Sassy Radish
I regularly come in and enjoy some of the delicious vegan desserts and cakes. Some of my favorites are the cookies and the snickers bar. The staff are always very friendly and welcoming.
Rosanne Choy
Wanted to meet up with my friend today and decided to try out vegan cakes with her. We ordered tiramisu, cheesecake and mocha. The mocha was actually quite bitter but it came with a nice piece of coconut slice. I reckon the cheesecake tasted better than the tiramisu. The cheesecake had a very strong banana flavour to it and was really sweet. Atmosphere was nice and so were the staff. If I were to come again I would try the matcha pancake.
Marnelli
Nice place whether youā€™re in a health kick or not. The staff are super helpful and friendly especially when you want to know whatā€™s in the food. The cabinet food look super scrumptious. Itā€™s a bit pricey compared to getting normal sweets somewhere else but flavours are really nice and the space is great for a quiet catchup.
Auckland Foodie
Nice cafe with yummy looking cabinet food and salads. I had the acai bowl with granola with was nice but felt slightly overpriced for the size of it.

Cafe within the main organic store. If youā€™re after some fresh, vegan and colourful meal option from your traditional lunch options, Ciscada could be an option.

Just popped in for a coffee catch up. Green tea looked good and the coffee wasnā€™t too bad.

Showstopper: We need more organic eateries and Ciscada is a refreshing change to your typical eat out options

Overall Grade: B

3.5 *

Mixed feelings about this place
As itā€™s an excellent setting and the staff are
Friendly enough etc.

Atmosphere / staff 5/5
Food 3.5/5 - quantity 2/5

I understand the ingredients used etc are not cheap, as Iā€™ve eaten at similar places who do raw organic food or just plant based eateries
however in saying that I ordered the

SUNFED ā€˜CHICKENā€™ CHIANG MAI CURRY

Quantity 2/5 ( in line with other food places )

Taste 3/5 ( under seasoned ) weirdly only paprika I think it was? Available on the table, surely expected Himalayan salt / black pepper available or even table salt would have sufficed

As I was still hungry I ordered the

Pulled Jackfruit Burger

^Same as above really

All in all spent $46.50 with coffee on a 1 person meal

Left feeling slightly peckish

Would I go back? Not sure.
Quite bamboozled really.

BIRCHER QUEEN šŸ‘‘
I ordered the bircher but it was basically fruit salad with a spoonful of bircher on the side with a drizzle of coyo. I asked for granola on the side to bulk the dish up. The bircher had a weird taste to it..almost savoury. The salads in the cabinet looked about a week old. Such a shame for a health focused cafe.

Just got drinks here and had a good catch up. The space is very tidy and neat. Nice seating for intimate catch ups with friends. They have an extensive hot and cold beverage menu.

The juices and smoothies were the real deal and not watered down or filled with blended ice which was fantastic. Thick smoothies that weren't too sweet.
Wei
One of the best vegan places in Auckland. The food is fresh and nutritious but also full of flavour which I find can often be lacking with vegan food. The cheesecakes are delicious, creamy and not too dense or rich unlike some of the vegan cheesecakes I've had elsewhere. The white chocolate blueberry slice is amazing as is the neapolitan cake and tiramisu. Their nori wrap with tahini is also really good. I would give the smoothies a miss as they're very small and priced $12-$14.50 which is extortionate. Ordering from the menu is more pricey and I'm not convinced the portions are worth it considering the small size of the refried black bean dish I had.
Rachel Shen
A quiet lovely place in the heart of Newmarket.

The dessert is fresh and tasty, we had tiramisu and banana cake there. The banana cake is amazing and recommended by staff. Made with fresh banana and coconut so it has various sweet taste mixed together rather than simply the sugar. I'd like to say I will visit again : )

Reckless Cicada

A funny place, there's no menu up on the wall, and no menus at the counter (that I could see), I was looking around everywhere, the staff took no notice though they had no other customers, I had to grab one off a table.

I am doing an AI cleanse diet, on day 24 and really starting to feel quite good. I ordered the Banana Smoothie: Banana / Dates / Coconut Mylk / Cinnamon / Vanilla / Salt with added cocoa nibs and blueberriesā€”a $18.50 smoothie!

I have been eating all of these ingredients during my AI meal plan with absolutely no adverse effects.

While I was drinking this smoothie it started to taste a bit like soya milk (legumes are out) and I thought, surely not, I specifically ordered a smoothie with coconut milk.Ā

I drank the whole thing stupidly, I should have gone and checked. Had a terrible night with stomach cramps, headache and gas, a bit of a setback. There was absolutely nothing else in there that could have caused that problem and WC do make some of their smoothies with soya milk.

Just saying ...
Seeessjay
So many beautifully presented items! Was only in town for one day so it was a hard choice as to what to get. Got the green smoothie (vastly over priced for the size and what it was), sprouted falafel salad (loved the spices and it smelled divine) and berry cheesecake (very well balanced flavours and smooth texture). Was a bit pricey($40), but most vegan cafes are unfortunately, so was expected. Overall impressed šŸ‘šŸ¼

Really surprised with the ample space and the ease of parking at their new location. I had a mixed salad which was delicious. We had stroganoff which was also lovely. We also shopped for fresh vegies and crystals. Great kids play area with blankets over a house frame.
Aimee.
Cafe within a shop. Everything is vegan here which is amazing. The menu is extensive and has a huge variety of hot and cold food- including desserts and drinks. The food is delicious and portions are generous. The only small downside is that the location is a little weird and hard to find.
Maree Brogden
Food for the healthy and curious, whoā€™d like to try a variety of richly flavoured vegan and raw foods. Foods of sweet cacao to barley salad, rich creamy smoothies to the other end of the spectrum, of vegetable juices.

A favourite place to go for a healthy snack, with a flavoured green tea. If you prefer the alternative options, check out their ā€˜homemadeā€™ chai!

As I'm lactose intolerant, this place is perfect to finally have something sweet. Gluten and lactose free cheesecakes they serve are really nice. I also tried few options of organic lunch and need to say that it was a really interesting experience.
Quality organic vegan food. Relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff. Enjoyed vegetarians burger, cheescake and good cup of coffe. Highly recommends
The mushroom stroganoff was tasty and filling however we arrived late in the afternoon so service was quite slow. The waiter did apologise though. Would definitely come again for great food!
Cesar Luis
Great Veg/Vegan food a bit hidden though great atmosphere and service, we really enjoyed the food and even our friends that are full Carnivores were delighted with the food, we definitely coming back!
Anne-Marie Jeremiah
Vegetarian meals, I only went to the cafe side but everything looked delicious. We got three dishes incl the falafals, mazze platter and quinoa ceviche. Everything was delicious, price wise its not too bad considering most veges and fruit are expensive nowadays. I will go back when I'm next in Newmarket as the service was lovely and fast.

Best vegan food, good staff, great service! First time trying a vegan cafe, and it did not disappoint. The matcha pancakes was a favourite āļøāļøāļøāļøāļø

My husband and I love this cafe. Delicious nutritious organic vegan food! A great atmosphere with communal seating and high ceilings. The staff always make you feel welcome and you can taste their care and love in the food. We love that they change up the menu seasonally while retaining favourites and tweaking them for each season.
Ravi
I really liked their service since they were very helpful and knowledgeable. They have an amazing atmosphere. They provide a good range for meals, coffees and teas.
Krystal Bewley
Great spot to sit and do some work using the free wifi available ! I had the acai bowl and also a bliss ball and they were so yummy. Definitely going back again soon.
Julia Louise
Everything on the menu is gluten free and vegan, which is such a treat for those of us with dietary requirements. The matcha pancakes (pictured) were delicious and filling - I really wanted to buy some cakes from the cabinet to take home as they looked amazing, but after eating I felt too full to even look at cake! Food service was speedy and friendly. Will be back soon

Love the atmosphere in this place! Today we sampled the tofu, twix smoothie and a bounty bar. All amazing and delicious! Highly recommend the tofu :)

I have been trying to eat healthy lately, but craving for a dessertšŸ˜œ, Wise Cicada have a good selection of refined sugar free, low carb, healthy dessert, and all taste great~~ I feel so good right now~~ They also have a large selection of organic tea~~

Defs coming back for the beetz cheese burger and mocha cheesecake (and bounty bar lol). Took away the desserts for later cos we wanted to extend the experience; beautiful food thank you.

Super awesome! Love food here. Healthy and reasonable price. Highly recommended. Organic soil and burger are just amazing. + great customer service.
Jade0289
The place was quite empty in Saturday morning.

The turmeric latte had a strong scent of turmeric powder and the size was quite generous.

The Berry cheese cake was beautiful! Nice texture and very well balanced sweet & sour flavour!

The Matcha pancake was nice as well. Freshly cooked thick pancake with home-made Berry compote. Couldn't stop eating this after the first bite!

But the shame is they have very limited menu, not enough options for me. And their smoothies looked nice but on a pricy side.

Service was super friendly! I think I'll go back to try their other cheese cakes!
Chico
I'm very sorry I underestimated vegan food I was totally wrong.
Wise Cicada has very tasty, healthy & beautiful food.
They take vegetable to the next level.
It is different compared to ordinary cafes where serve yummy & comfy food.

I'm not a vegan but I was craving some vege goodness for my KFC-filled-sinful-soul. Their vegan 'sushi' was delicious, as was their chocolate german cookie (which wasn't a tasteless, crumbly rock but actually really good). I just wish they had a bigger menu.
R-Dee Roche
I'm not a vegan or vegetarian but absolutely love the food here. Everything is fresh and tasty. Try the curries and also salads - they will change your life. Make sure you save space in your tummy for their vegan brownies!
Rebekkah Farrell
Delicious organic food and wonderful service. The salad bar has a generous variety to choose from each day with awesome topping. From their new Ć la carte menu, the creamy mushrooms or black bean 'burger' are standouts. I always enjoy their salted almond fudge and of course their famous banoffee cheesecake - it's magnificent, I even ordered one for my birthday cake! The staff are always so welcoming, helpful and efficient; I look forward to seeing them whenever I frequent the cafe. Love this place.
Emma Patricia Katili
This place is hard to miss when you're not looking for it specifically. However, i feel like the ones who know about this place will definitely come again for more and more of their delicious and healthy meals.
Austindavis17
Food is very yum and guiltfree! I tried their spicy chickpea with some homemade hummus, and its a superstar! Even my omnivore partner loved it so much. Also tried their cheesecake and it tastes really good! We paid around $20 for the two dishes and even though the serving portion of the chickpea might not be what I expected, the taste and quality got it even. The vegan-organic shop was a plus, doing some guiltfree - cruelty free shopping and dining at the same time is really a glory!

This cafe has recently changed locations, (still in Newmarket but just a different street) and now its even better than before, which I didnt think possible. :) Divine, healthy, vegan and vegetarian meals, super lovely staff, and a really beautiful energy when you go in there. Theres hot and cold cafe style foods, salads and desserts, also a selection of smoothies and drinks. Mostly vegan, all vegetarian and super healthy. Theres also an added bonus of a shop inside the cafe where you can buy organic groceries and health foods. This is one of my favourite places to eat. Love it. :)
Christine Yeh
Great selection, tasty and healthy meals we got matcha pancakes and scrambled TOFU and we were so pleasantly surprised with the serving size! Only letdown was the service, the people could be more welcoming and inviting.
Jazmin Lee
If I could give this place ten stars I would. šŸŒŸ everything about this place I love! It's a mini organic food store inside where you can buy super food powders, mock meat, ice blocks etc...and a book store as well. I always used to buy the Dr.Bronner Soaps. Where can I start! The cabinet food is great, vegan cheesecake galore, and the usual salads. Just thinking about this place makes me wanna go back. The food choices are supper unique for a vegetarian/organic based place, I ordered vegan cheesecake once and studied there as well! It's a great place to go in the winter and sit down to relax! Will go back for some me time definitely. I ordered coconut and pumpkin soup and warmed me up instantly!!! Prices are quite good, more expensive of course from the food choices. I was inspired by their chia seed herbal drink so now I make that at home! ā˜•ļø the staff are very kind and very spiritually aware which I love!! My friends and I used to come here a lot and have a chat with the owner once or twice. I love this place, and if you love happy and awakened staff, and unique vegan dishes you will too! āœØšŸŒæ

I personally love this place! I've only tried their drinks and desserts before and was very impressed. Really friendly and fast service, even at busy times. Heaven for vegans/vegetarians although it is something everyone should try at least once!
Deep Lalwani
I personally didn't purchase anything from this cafe/store, But however I did get lost nearby and walked in to the store ask for directions, the staff were really helpful and even though I wasn't a customer they helped me without a second thought.Ā The lady at the counter and other lady named Alexia were absolutely life savers, its one thing to produce good food and supply good products, but nothing beats customer service and I can say without a doubt that if I went back there as a customer to purchase a product or food item that I would be more that satisfied with the service.Ā Thanks again staff at Wise Cicada!
Diner8Here
Like to come here to eat like a Ā bunny Ā as they sell organic Ā drinks and vegetarian/vegan meals but will cost ya, they also stock organic produce. Came down especially for the opening day market and got myself the organic dandelion latte and what a nice combination it is, no caffeine too. This place is both a shop and cafe and relocated from Gillies Ave to this site where office depot and the Russia nightclub use to be and now occupy the entire basement. I like the cicada logo too.
Gemma Leigh
Was okay. Had the breakfast meal there. The sausages not so good bt loved the scrambled eggs. Didnt enjoy baked beans. Liked the veg falafel thingys. Orange juice was best ever!.
Michelle Hwang
Am sitting in this place right now. A few customer, peaceful music and mellow flat white coffee. First time to see the liquid sugar stick in a cafe. Staff were welcoming and friendly. Next time I wanna come back for their pretty lemon cheesecake.
Freya Burnett
I usually Ā love wise cicada however today had a really disapointing experience. The new store is really awesome spacious and bright, but pretty cold unfortunately . Firstly the lady who served my friend and I was not friendly at all, she handed us the breakfast menu without even saying hello or smiling and after nearly ten seconds asked us what we were ordering she seemed like she was in a massive rush, I know they were just opening and it was a new store but it was kinda rude. There was not nearly enough tables and I don't mind sitting next to people I don't know but you guys should defiantly get more smaller tables. We ordered the pancakes($12) and big breakfast ($17) to share, which came super fast so that was great. But on the menu it says pancakes (plural) however there was only one pancake on the plate which was weird, obviously thats how its done but I was expecting a stack of at least two pancakes. The fruit on top of the pancake was awful and did not suit the meal at all, I can understand that certain fruits would not be in season but the apple was sooo floury and the orange was not nice I think having sliced banana and some sort of berry sauce would have suited the pancake better but thats just my opinion the chocolate sauce was so yum so that was good. On the other hand the big breakfast ($17) was super yum but maybe an extra sausage would have been appreciated because it was really small (I know they can be expensive so again kinda understandable) plus the falafel was so dry . Overall left feeling super disappointed, I know I will come again because the shop selection is AMAZING hopefully if I go to the cafe again I will have a better experience because I have previously had good experience at wise cicada, just today was super disappointed.
Essi
I was disappointed when tried to go there and have some coffee and realised that the place was closed... Luckily the friendly guy told me that it has only moved to the other place. And there it was - even better Wise Cicada! The coffee was good and spicy raw brownie was full of tasty! All the food there is vegan and most of them also organic. Staff was friendly and atmosphere relaxed.
Ambience was also a little bit raw... They've just moved and therefore interior decoration was unfinished.
Chris Moore
100% vegan, 95% organic. That's the drea. And its all delicious. With a shop as well selling all sorts of vegan treats, I will not hesitate to go back :D
Wanderlust
I came in here today for lunch. The food was beautifully displayed in the cabinet. I pick the wrap and some mixed salads with vegan pesto. The ingredients were very fresh, I really enjoyed it. I got a brownie as well, I enjoyed the chocolate topping but not the rest. But I am not a huge raw dessert fan to be honest.

The staff were very lovely and welcoming. I am planning to come back for one of their cooked breakfasts!
Georgia Dobbs
came here for some yummy take away snacks, all of the food and produce there looked amazing, it was hard not to buy the whole shop! we got a few little sweet treats, reccommended if your looking for something a little more healthy and nutritious whilst still being yum!
Purita Mok
Filling lunches and a great selection of raw desserts, yes please! Really love the soups too! And so convenient to have a supermarket right there as well to browse after the meal!

Loved all the Salads a d the desserts and the staff were friendly. Try the Kaffir shot thats bound to wake you up. Although do us all a favour and get better aircon. Its too hot and almost sickening eating in a stuffy place. Notmuch ventilation through the place.

We weren't aware that this place existed until recently (sort of discovered it by accident) and what a pleasant accident.Ā Although we are becoming progressively health conscious within our household, we're not vegan or people with any fixed or hard-out dietary attitudes.Ā That can make me reluctant to ask questions of health-focused eateries (more than one or two holier-than-thou types in other shops/cafes).Ā Certainly not the case here - our questions about food were answered without the slightest condescension and with a passion for others' wellbeing and efforts to learn that left us with an enduring vibe that day.Ā We enjoyed our food; we enjoyed being treated with respect and enthusiasm for our fumbling first steps; and the standard of service couldn't have been higher in the cafe or the adjacent store section.Ā That was last weekend.Ā We're going back tomorrow for brunch and to pick up some items from the store.Ā I hate shopping, but I'm looking forward to Wise Cicada.Ā Well done, people :-)

Went here for lunch today with my mom and was so impressed by the good food and friendly staff. The vegan cuisine was amazing. I had the toasted vegan cheese sandwich and mom had the shepherd's pie (vegan meal of the day). We were both so impressed by the quality and taste of our meals and look forward to coming back again and again. Excellent service as well.
Sarah
Had the quinoa and vegetable broth of the day. Found a lump of vegetable stock powder in the bowl and had to spit it out. Really unpleasant and excessively salty. Left still hungry :(
TinaS
Situated in the midst of Newmarket specialising in selling healthy organic vegetarian food (+/- dairy free / gluten free). The cafe serves a range of breakfast, salads and treats (cakes, slices, and desserts). I had a strawberry panna cotta and it's great! The hummus platter with salad was very nice too. Coffee is not bad (dairy free), and there is a wide range of freshly-squeezed juice. The price of the food is slightly pricier than your usual cafe food but it reflects the cost of the ingredients used, and the portion served is quite huge too. This is certainly a place to be if you need a slight detoxing and knowing the food they serve is very healthy! There is also carparking available for this place!

This place doesn't look very inviting from the outside, it could do with a revamp on the inside as well.
It's very handy to have an organic shop attached to this cafe.
I have tried a few things from here, my favourite would have to be the chocolate cranberry slice, perfect texture, cranberry and chocolate go so well together!
The red velvet cake is very interesting the base is made from carrot and Beetroot which I quite liked it was the perfect amount of sweetness.
The salads are also very tasty, they all looked amazing so asked a staff member what they liked, he suggested the cauliflower, Beetroot and quinoa and the kale and mushroom. You are also able to pick dips to go with your salad.
Prices are what would be expected for the use of good quality ingredients.
Staff are also very lovely, will definitely be revisiting!

Wise Cicada is a heaven for the healthy conscious. Bio, organic, cafe, grocer, bookshop, offline, online, it's a bit of everything.Ā . Due to its everythingness, it doesn't look the most appealing on the outset, I know. But the deeper you delve into its spaces, the more intrigued you get. Most items are on the higher side than in your average supermarket. There is a price we pay for choosing healthier options, it seems. However, I have managed to find a few that are actually a bit cheaper, like some of the seeds.
Veganista
Ridiculously over-priced. I have been to many health-food/vegan eateries and have never seen prices like this. I bought two small sweets which were not exactly cheap, and the sales assistant said to me in a shocked/surprised voice "is that it?"

This is an organic food store that sells a wide variety of organic products and food. It's also a cafe that makes fresh healthy food, or they have a cabinet filled with raw treats and salads. I've only been here once and i had their buckwheat pancakes served with fruit salad, maypel syrup and bircher muesli (because they ran out of the stuff that was meant to go with it). It wasn't that great, because it was soaked in maypel syrup. But i also got their pumpkin spice cake and that was quite nice. I think their cabinet treats might be better so I'll have to try it again! I did write this review a while ago, and haven't been back since, but I'm keen to try it again, as I've heard and seen great things of them!

I'm always on the look out for good bread and coffee in my cafe wanderings, and wise cicadas baked beans (served with toasted multigrain bread and mesclun salad) and cappuccino definitely deliver. Honestly some of the best bread in town, and the beans are ten out of ten... Except for my mums I've never tasted better. The coffee is hot, creamy and rich and this is a consistent experience. Service isn't great, the wait staff are friendly but if your dining with company they don't seem to ever bring out your meals at the same time. Also, although my beans and coffee is cheap and hearty, salads and treats from the counter are pricey (think $9 for a tiny slice of cheesecake).

Make sure if you go to check out the shop, also sometimes they have bread on sale and the coconut bread is the best investment I've ever made. The place has a nice relaxed feel and I always enjoy stopping here.

Value: 4/5
Service: 3/5
Taste:5/5
Overall: 4/5

Hot tip: watch out on their Facebook page for in store product samplings and some cool foodie/organic themed events!

Whenever we want to feel a little more righteous w. ourselves, we head to WC, their salads are great and so are their smoothies and it's always fun checking out their many and healthier alternatives to snack foods. We usually eat in if we can manage to wrangle a table and there's always, always something on the menu that we haven't tried, due to that great fear of the unknown, but the staff are great and will gently coax you into bravely trying something different every time.

I love this cafe, it is one of the few vegan/oraganic places in Auckland. It had a lot of sweet treats and a range of salads. Inside there was also a mini grocery store with organic products. I got the Brazillian superfood breakfast and my friend got the pancakes which we thought was delicious.

If your after a healthy quick fix, this is the place to go! Everything is fresh, plant-based and organic..hence the prices!! They have some great salads here which you can mix and match as it goes by weight rather than container size. Due to this system it can work out to be a bit pricey though! Love that it is a cafĆ© and mini supermarket in one. If you are wanting a sweet treat they have some delicious looking/tasting cabinet options or you can opt for a packet of frooze balls ā€“ my fav.

I Love Food
One of the best places around Auckland for fresh organic, vegan food. I love the salads here. Really good range and all so tasty! Being able to pick which salads you want and how much is great! The kale and apple salad is probably one of my favourites! A full plate of salad will cost you $10-15. Amazing value for money!

The BEST vegan place in Auckland - I absolutely love Wise Cicada! They have the most incredible range of vegan food and organic groceries, and their vegan mayo is to die for! The tiramisu is one you definitely have to try, and their daily hot meals are delicious and filling. The staff are super friendly and the entire business just has such a great ethos and vibe about it. If I could give them a 10/5 I would!

I am a huge huge fan of Wise Cicade's dessert range and have probably spent 100's just in the past few months buying these. Wise Cicada offers a wide variety of healthy and guilt free salads, meals, soups and desserts, and additionally, sells health goods too in the other half of their store. Their cheesecakes are my absolute favourite here with the most outstanding one being their mocha cheesecake ( in my opinion). Their chocolate lacuma cake would have to be my second favourite; yum! As expected from a health store, the prices of these cakes are pretty high ( around $9 a slice), but health and happiness are priceless in my books.

p.s. service is mostly good. Sometimes I have gotten the occasional grumpy waiter, but most of them are friendly and helpful. ESPECIALLY MICHAEL AND ROB! :) love you wise cicada!

I often come with a friend to catch up here as it is middle to both of us!

My favourite is the hummus platter. The hummus is delicious spread on WC's specialty bread with herb pesto. Paired with carrot and beetroot salad it's a lovely combination.

I always make sure to get a pot of Kerikeri Rooibos and Manuka - shame they don't sell it in their shop as I would live on this tea!
Jaya
As much as I'd like to avoid going in, I just couldn't help it. I mainly go in to grab goodies from their aisles, but once we sat down for a bite. Tons of healthy options! Their chia tea is good too.

I have been visiting Wise Cicada at least once a week since working in Newmarket for a nutrient dense lunch. This place is perfect for vegans, vegetarians and anyone who is gluten free and/or dairy free.

The salads are my favourite and usually cost me around $15 (the price is dependent on the weight). You can choose from a variety of salads in the cabinet and then add your sauces and nuts/seeds. The salads change every day and every one that I have tried I have loved. Itā€™s so nice to be able to eat a healthy salad for lunch that you know is going to keep you full for a few hours.

I also recommend trying their delicious raw desserts. These are perfect for when the 3pm sugar cravings it at work. The staff are really friendly and the store also offers a wide range of products so you can stock up while you are there.Ā

It is one of the few places in Auckland that serve organic, nutritious vegetarian salads and desserts.

I come in during my breaks at work to fit in a study sesh with wholesome and nutrient dense food. Food has never disappointed so far. I have a weakness for their slices, especially caramel. Usually paired with their great coffees or a juice for a vitamin boost.
Nice little cafe with good service and tasty food

So much better than expected. Flavorsome food, fast and friendly service, vegan - a few of the great things about this awesome shop/cafe. Weekend breakfasts are a must try I will definitely have a buffet round next time!

I adore this place- their food is so nourishing, tasty and clearly made with love. Also love to check out grocery items- loving the tofurkey products and patiently waiting for some more. Thanks for great service and beautiful food :)

Visit this place weekly sometimes even twice a week!
There cabinet food and salads are amazing!
So good to have a raw food place that still tastes amazing!
Have also always found the staff to be really friendly

I have been a regular at W.C for 4 years now. The food is fabulous, the atmosphere relaxed and the staff wonderful. They work extremely hard, are often busy with customers/orders but will bend over backwards to help you and make time for your every request. I love the smoothies, hot dishes, salads and cakes! There is a new chef so I'm learning the new treats on the menu. Favourite hot dishes : Shepards Pie, Potato/brocolli gratin. Tips: It's good to be an early bird before the lunchtime rush! They do a good breakfast too...
Lovelypokl92
the food was average but loved the dessert! service could improve they weren't very friendly :( would go back just because there aren't much better vegetarian restaurants

If I'm ever in Newmarket Wise Cicada instantly pops into my head. The food is delicious, the staff are wonderful. I adore the salads - so damned good. I find the hot food pretty bland, but nothing some salt and pepper can't fix. It's not bad, kinda good, but not great, it could do with more flavour and seasoning. Wise Cicada is pretty expensive, but the food is incredible so I will always go back, being vegan it's so nice to go somewhere and have so many options. The raw cheesecakes are to die for! Also, I can buy my favourite vegan cheese once I've eaten there. :) It's a win win!

Wise cicada was my biggest addiction when working in Newmarket! The salads are delicious! It's generally hard to find places that offer a range of vegetarian options so I was delighted to find this. The food is amazing with well paired favours and dressing. Add a freshly squeezed orange juice to the mix and you have the perfect lunch! This was my go to kale place for ages. The store inside offers a huge range of organic products and is the only place I've found Peruvian quinoa from home!

I was very fortunate to be invited to Zomato's Foodie Meetup at Wise Cicada for a Sunday lunch. I had been to Wise Cicada once before for coffee and shopping so it was great to get to try out more of their menu.

We started off with a selection of salads to share and drinks. I tried my first flat white with coconut milk and it was delicious. They have quite the selection of milks; organic cowā€™s milk, almond, soy, coconut, oat, rice and hemp (I didnā€™t even know half of these existed!). The salads were very tasty, especially the kale and apple salad. Iā€™m not normally a fan of kale but I could eat that salad all day. I also had the ā€˜meal of the dayā€™ which was Moqueca served with brown rice. Moqueca is a Brazilian seafood stew-like dish but as everything served at Wise Cicada is plant-based there was no seafood however they achieved the seafood flavour with nori. It was chock full of mushrooms and was very filling. At $12.50 it was very good value for money.

For dessert we had a selection of their sweet treats which were all gluten, dairy and refined sugar-free. I really wasnā€™t expecting to love them but I did. The carrot cake had an amazing coconut cream icing on top and the caramel slice was fantastic. Even though I was already full I managed to try of the desserts. As you can see from the photos they have SO MANY different sweet options which I will definitely have to go back and try (raw pear pie Iā€™m looking at you). Iā€™m also intruiged by their cooked breakfast buffet which is available on Saturday and Sunday.

Wise Cicada has done an amazing job at compling a full selection of healthy, organic (where possible), dairy, gluten, sugar and meat free options which are most importantly (for me anyway) tasty. They also sell fruit and veges, grocery products, bulk food, household goods and personal care products (make up, shampoo etc).

Thanks Zomato for another fantastic event!

I was invited by Zomato for Zomato's Foodie Meetup on the 15th of March for lunch. Prior to my visit, I checked Wise Cicada on Zomato and had drawn an image in my head for it to be a petite restaurant with few options.

Well, was I very wrong! The place had such a nice atmosphere at first glance. The place was big and busy. People had come in not only to eat, but to shop for groceries, health supplies and even books. They had huge variety on their menu, from their enormous chalk board, to their paper menu and their dessert cabinet.Ā

We were served with variety of salads to taste, a main dish and desserts. The salads were amazing. The combination of the flavours and the vegetables blended well together and tasted heavenly. I would be tempted to turn vegan or vegetarian if all my foods tasted this way. Their main meal of the day was Moqueca, served with brown rice, veges and the bowl consisted of mushrooms, potato and other goodness with extra zing of nori (seaweed). It was unique and very appetizing.Ā

After a good meal, feeling healthy as ever, the desserts won me over. The desserts were also free of dairy and sugar! I especially liked the blueberry slice, had a hint of citrus flavour which I enjoyed.Ā

Overall, a fantastic experience. The service from Shelley was incredible. She was very knowledgeable and explained the each dishes well.Ā

I would recommend Wise Cicada for those who are wanting to start eating healthy and fresh or even for people looking for vegetarian friendly places!

Started with a Flat white w/coconut milk - delicious! Great texture too. Had the special meal, which was a vegan take on a south american seafood stew/chowder with brown rice - also amazing. And the desserts! Really worth a visit, don't let the vegan/organic labels put you off, this is some great tasting food.

I LOVE this place.Ā I find it a tad expensive so don't visit as often as I'd like, but appreciate the prices are based on the quality of the ingredients and the work put into making such delicious food.Ā I usually have a combination of salads and a coffee (it's great to try hemp milk for a change).Ā The breakfast is great too.Ā My son loves the smoothies, (but they're pricey so he has to choose either that or a meal) and we usually have something yummy from the baking cabinet also.Ā It's great that the shop is attached to the cafĆ© as if you just feel like an apple and a coffee while the family eat, that's fine too and such a well stocked store there's plenty to browse through while you're there.

Lovely staff. Great quality food and good for you too.

Ever since we discovered Wise Cicada we have been so excited to spread the word and highly recommend this food haven to anybody that appreciates the best source of food at the highest quality.

The food is always super fresh and salads are not only satisfying, it is also very delicious.

A must visit experience.

I trust this place and believe there should be more healthy places such as Wise Cicada in New Zealand.

:)

Well worth a visit with organic, nutritious food. Avoiding sugar and gluten is easy (even with the cakes!). Great salad options. A bonus is the attached (mostly) organic store, which is so rare.

This is the real deal. A week on the road doing presentations saw me suffering from a series of food atrocities. Straight down to Wise Cicada for the best breakfast in Auckland and then takeaway salads to last me for a couple of days ā€“ am now back to full strength and rearing to go back on the road. Hope you guys can all get in behind the snapper campaign to ensure our children have a meaningful fishing experience ā€“ http://www.LegaSea.co.nz

Love Wise Cicada! Occasionally I get muddled up and call this place Wild Cicada heh.

My mum does pretty much most of her grocery shopping here, so out of curiosity my sister and I decided to stop by and pick up one of their famed smoothies. We were told by the woman at the counter to take a seat because they're made from scratch and could take a while, so we sat at the lovely big communal wooden table in the middle of the cafe area. At $12 each the super-food smoothies are a little pricey, but considering the quality of the ingredients that go into them, they're worth every cent. And they're absolutely delicious!

After our smoothies we decided to have a browse of the store, and each of the staff members who walked past us gave us a friendly greeting with a smile! We wandered up and down the aisles finding all kinds of interesting health food, and we'll definitely be back to get another smoothie (and maybe buy some ingredients so we can try come up with our own smoothies at home!).

I also bought a Chocolate Rough, which had in it goji berries, coconut and a few (non-peanut) nuts, and it was so much better than any chocolate baked product I've had at bakeries. Wise Cicada also have a great range of skincare that I'm looking into purchasing at my next visit. Love Wise Cicada, it's literally quite impossible to leave this place without a smile on your face!

Pro: open till 7pm, free wifi
Con: shop is overpriced, except for some items (much cheaper in other shops)

I love the oasis in Newmarket for its cafe with its organic treats! Unfortunately you can easily miss it as it's not very inviting from the street. Savoury dishes are wonderful (just 10$!!), salads, coffee, Chai Tea and a sweats (Bliss ball and Muesli slice) are great too. The breakfast buffet is again a bit overpriced for not much variety (could do with some veggies or salads). But everything tastes amazing - and of course the best is that it's all organic! I was also fascinated by the different kinds of water you could chose from. And the coolest thing is that this place is open until 7pm!

The shop sells some great products but you can get many of them cheaper elsewhere. Some fresh produce and the eggs are good offers.

Food is as lovely as the atmosphere. Great variety of vegan and vege dishes. You can do a bit of health food grocery shopping or visit the new age book store after you eat.
Highly recommended for all those of a spiritual, hippy or 'goodwill to all' kind of a bent.
Ruby GiLl
Wise Cicada is a great place to eat with a happy conscience. Perfect for vegans and vegetarians who don't want to keep settling for the same meals over and over again. A friend of mine works here and he loves it! A great atmosphere, interesting recipes and friendly staff. I recommend it to all my friends and family.
Aileen Buscke
I love Wise Cicada Newmarket. Lovely, caring staff who make you feel special. A great variety of health food plus all the other extras makes it a very interesting place to be.

Finally a truly ethical, eco, community minded cafe! Healthy food for people and the planet. Actually it's the staff that make it such an exceptional place to eat. Everyone is so friendly! I love that you can try a sample of everything and then just pay a fair price for a good organic meal. I recommend the purple kumara soup and the chocolate macadamia macaroons. Come on everybody, step out of the box. Come and support these great people who are daring to do something different!
Marianne
This is a fantastic place to eat. The food is health, delicious and totally vegan, so is also good for the planet and your conscience! Salads, pizza, dips, wraps and the staff are really friendly. It was a bit of a surprise when they told me that there are no set prices, you just pay what you feel the meal is worth. I will be going back regularly.

Excellent addition in Newmarket - organic products and cafe.
Helpful and friendly service - very good smoothies and very large range of fresh food for lunch
Is on my "visit frequently " list
Amanda Kennedy
Lovely friendly staff and good range of products. Would have given 5/5 if there was more bulk bin stuff available!!

Wise Cicada is one of the few places in Auckland that serves organic, free range, nutritious vegetarian meals, salads and sweet delights. Although I do sometimes cringe at the prices, I try to tell myself that all the ingredients that are used are top of the range, homemade and delicious. I have since only been coming here in moderation when I am in need of a pick up!

While I do love the salads (a medium sized salad costs about $15, as they do now price it on weight), I am a huge fan of their sweet treats. They have a good range of raw/gluten free/dairy free desserts, cakes, tarts, bliss balls.

When I arrive at Wise Cicada, I always head for the baking cabinet! Last time I went, I couldn't go past the Raw Vegan Cacao Cheesecake (photo attached) - absolutely delicious and I would far rather that than a piece of chocolate cake!

It was a melt in your mouth kind of dessert and the perfect way to end a healthy and tasty lunch!
