Review Hinemoa Street Organic Cafe - Auckland Central

Frankie Whaitiri
Best cafe I have ever been to. The food was perfectly cooked and beautifully plated. Generous servings. Great price. Almost the entire menu had GF and DF options. Highly recommend. Would even suggest it as a destination dine in with cheeky views of Rangitoto.

Friendly service. Food was beautifully presented and tasted delicious. Reasonably-priced, the owner didn't add surcharge on public holiday either.

We ordered the Organic Grills and the Egg Benedict with a cup of Mocha, the food here is delicately presented. An excellent choice for brunch. Would definitely like to try the veggie grill next time.

Surprised to find this very nice out of town cafe. Although the brunch/lunch menu is pretty standard, but the serving size was decent. The seafood omelette was loaded with BIG scallops and prawns, was lovely~

Great selection of excellent dishes on the menu for brunch, and the food is really special. A tasty and filling meal.

One of my top places in Birkenhead to go for breakfast or brunch. Superb coffee, relax atmosphere and yummy selection. My favourites are the corn fritters, smashed avocado and the salads. But honestly you can't go wrong with any choices.

Beautiful tasty food and an amazing menu! We were able to choose from a menu that sounded yummy, even if you are new to the organic scene! The prices were amazingly reasonable too! The service amazing and the Cafe clean and well presented! :-)

This is a cute little cafe owned by a cute couple :P All handmade fresh organic food. An excellent choice for a grand breakfast, a healthy lunch or a pleasant afternoon tea. The food here looks appetizing and the ingredients are very fresh.

One of us had smashed avocado and 2 poached eggs. Maybe 2 teaspoons of avo and the eggs still had clear egg white. Just not cooked. The other was bacon and eggs. The eggs were supposed to be sunny side down. they were but were solid. Cooked like s brick. Not a Good experience.
Wei Li

I appreciate that even though we were using Zomato Gold, they still give us very good portions.
Hope you keep it up.

I came here for brunch, and the place was quite busy. The service staff were quite friendly. But the wait for food was approximately 45 minutes (the drinks came within 10ish minutes which was quite prompt)

We ordered Mr Funguy which was delicious, my only issue was because the toast was under the toppings they became a little soggy but it wasn’t a big issue! I also ordered the buckwheat pancakes which were a tad undercooked, but they had great flavour – it also wasn’t too sweet which is great because it didn’t taste a sickly sweet like other places. There was also a nice variety of fresh fruit as well. We also ordered the Organic Grill which was a little smaller than expected– we were a bit confused because on the menu it said “potato mash cake”, but on the wall menu it said “potato hash cake” – it ended up being a mash cake. I personally wasn’t a big fan of the capers that were inside the potato mash either – it felt like an odd choice to put inside.

Overall I enjoyed my meal, besides the long wait time!

Good and clean small cafe shop with friendly and welcoming staffs as a bonus. Can not fault the food, there is no element of woh, the presentation and and the taste match general expectation. Extra bonus for been an organic cafe.
Becky Kuang
A small cafe at Birkenhead point. Nice coffee and food was ok. Ordered egg bene and french toast. French toast was average. Will try something else next time.

Can't really fault anything about the quality and choices this cafe provided.

Very GF friendly café and the menu is very attractive. Our food arrived quickly and presented beautifully. Very surprised to find the flavours were so well balanced and all ingredients on the plate were nice and fresh.

Great smoothy too! Nice service and good location. Can't ask for more!! Will definitely be coming back.

We have been meaning to stop and try this cafe for a long time and we finally did! We’ve heard great reviews of the food and it did not disappoint! We got the Salmon Potato Cake and the Corn Fritters. They were both amazing, probably the best corn fritters I’ve ever had. The service was great and it was a lovely start to our morning 😊 will be back!
Tasty Morsel
Yes, yes I will be coming back. Often hard to find vegan options for my bf, but this had a whole breakfast meal waiting for him on the menu. Everything was delightfully healthy as well and lots of it! Nice way to enjoy a Sunday morning in the sun.

I love this little place close to the heart of Birkenhead! The food is always great, the staff are always extremely patient, considerate and courteous. We've been here a few times now and have never been disappointed!! Service: 5/5 Food: 5/5: Ambience: 5/5 Spicy chai latte (with coconut milk): 5/5

We’ve visited here a total of 4 times. Twice with Zomato Gold and twice without it. Whether we use Zomato gold or not the service is the same - exceptional! The owners of the cafe are very friendly and the food is great - we especially love mr funguy! We will visit again :)
Sheryl Taylor
Love this place! Amazing food and polite staff . Mr Funguy is a must try, as is the BLAT bagel . Great coffee. Quick service . Dogs allowed in the outdoor area :)

My partner and I came here after randomly walking past and deciding to give it a go - best decision ever! I had the smashed avocado with a side of halloumi and my partner had the vegan muesli, both of which were super delicious and generous with portion sizes. I loved the sliced almonds and sunflower seeds on the smashed avocado, such a great idea and interesting texture! The muesli was really nutty and seedy too which was great. We also both had the house made matcha latte which was beautifully smooth and authentic.
Service was super lovely and polite especially considering it was about 2pm on Good Friday when we popped in, I imagine everyone was wanting to pack up and go home so we really appreciated the meals and the service.
Altogether came to $52 for both of us which I think is totally decent for a café lunch that kept us full for hours! Thanks guys! 🌟

Headed out for breakfast this morning and thought we'd give this place a go. It was cute and the staff were super friendly.
The food was really nice and filling, we got the big grill and the veggie big grill and we're both so full after.
Their fresh juices are so nice and refreshing.
It's definitely a place worth checking out for food that's a little bit different to the normal cafe food but was delicious.
Their cabinet baking looked amazing too! Can't wait to try it.
Dylan Rates Your Shit
Nice, tidy cafe . Good menu to look over with a thumping hangover . The smashed avo was algood, the addition of the nuts on top were great. The wait time was a bit ridiculous , but due to a sausage dog walking past, then barking at people before drinking some water, really made my day.
Penny
I tend to be quite lazy with writing reviews but this enough of a disappointment that I have to. When you charge $25 for a breakfast but then instead of a "potato hash" you serve potato MASH, stuffed with cheese (wth, not mentioned on menu), coated in cornflakes (organic?!?) and seasoned with cinnamon and nutmeg.... Just, no.

If I ignore the truly awful potato execution, the rest of the food was extremely average but edible.

The food also looked nothing like the photos on here from a year ago so it's quite possible the owners and/or chef changed.

There are waaaay better cafes in Birkenhead - highly recommend Tongue & Groove's Paleo Grill, an old favourite that never disappoints.
Natalia
My favourite cafe in Birkenhead! Yummy date scones! Tasty strong coffee! Smart menu which is divided on three main ingredients: avocado, bacon and salmon! Very useful and smart! And make it much easier to choose right thing for you! Like it!
Kayles Bee
One of best cafes on the Shore!
Always served great coffee and delicious food. Environment is very warm and staff is so friendly.
Defintely try their SMASH AVO!
Isaac Valach
Second visit to this cafe, was a nice change from our first visit constantly listening the barista as he shouted across the cafe to other staff. The coffee is acceptable here food offerings are small which isn't always a bad thing, the food is somewhat over priced particularly given the over crowding of other local cafe's & Eatery's in the area. Salmon Hash cakes consisted of 2 small round potato cakes with what looked to be a mix of mashed & potato pieces with a few bits of salmon pressed into the top of them.

Found this fabulous cafe in the Entertainment Book and rocked up on a lazy Sunday morning. Partner and teenage son were skeptical at eating at an organic cafe, but both were pleasantly surprised. Attentive and polite staff from the onset. All meals were delicious, beautifully presented and served with a wide smile. Great food, fair prices, friendly staff and good coffee ... whats not to love??

Came here with a friend fornbreakfadt this morning. I was tempted to get their big breakfast equivalent but then saw an instagram picture of their eggs bene. Both me and my friend got the eggs bene.

I loved the look of the place, their social responsibility of sourcing responsibly and even there very friendly staff. I'm very sad to say that this was the worst eggs bene I've ever tasted.

The egg was cooked well, but my salmon was a little overcooked, and the key ingredient to any bene its sauce just lacked flavour all together.

I'm not so much a connisor in coffee but my friend is and he commented on both the soy mocha i ordered and his latte speaking of the coffee very highly.

I was really rooting for this place, esp considering driving from central just to go there. BUT after reading alot of the other reviews, I can have this funny suspicion that the bacon dishes are amazing and i just chose the wrong dish.

Eithier way I wish this restaurant all the best moving forward :)

Was it worth it?
It's a no from me sorry
This is a cute little cafe owned by a cute couple.
With all handmade fresh organic food.
An excellent choice for a grand breakfast, a healthy lunch or a pleasant afternoon tea.
The food here looks appetizing and the ingredients are fresh.
They use KUMARA chips as sides, which is AMAZING.

On arrival we asked if the kitchen was still open & were told it was. We then ate our lunch while the staff proceeded to sweep & stack furniture around us. My fritters sounded interesting but were tasteless.
Tayla
Best organic cafe! such lovely staff and such a nice relaxing atmosphere, food and drinks absolutely fantastic my sister and I enjoyed it very much! highly recommend this cafe ☺
Tony Ma
Best Bacon hands down! The fruit juices are made fresh as well!

I wasn't expecting much walking along the street but the organic food selection caught my attention. I cannot stress enough how great the bacon tastes. My wife said "it must be good for you to finish your bacon". I have high blood pressure so I usually throw away the bacon. The sausage was very nice too, perfectly toasted bread.

The salmon was a bit over cooked, but the Mrs enjoyed it. Overall a delightful experience.

Eat Good. Eat Organic.

Environment: 4.5/5
Food Quality: 5/5
Food Quantity: 5/5
Service: 4.5/5
Price $20-25pp

Just moved to the area over the Christmas with my sis so decided to have a breakfast together.
cafe was nice and quiet in the morning, so we ordered poached eggs on toast at the counter and my sister ordered french toast. take around 15 mins to arrive to our table, but eggs was lukewarm and overcooked. my toast was soggy so i didn't finish it. french toast was ok she said but nothing special.
both of our flat white was bit weak and lukewarm too but the waiter offered us a new one which is alright.

overall pretty average cafe. nothing special on the menu . not in a hurry to come back.

Such a cool place to visit! I ordered a smoothie and French Toast here for lunch on a Saturday. Although they were quite busy, they brought out our meals in no time at all! The Smoothie was INCREDIBLE! So tasty! The French Toast and all its elements were cooked to perfection. Sorry I don't have a picture of it - we were way too hungry and only realised after our meal that we forgot the picture!
Definitely recommend it if you're in the area! :)

We just had a lovely lunch at the cafe. The whitebait omelette was great and the salmon potato cakes delicious. Staff were friendly and inviting and atmosphere very pleasant. But the best part were the takeaway blueberry muffin and date scone. The muffin was lovely and full of fruit, but the scone was absolutely to die for, the best scone I've ever had at a cafe. Well done to everyone.

Amazed my the service and how fast we were seated on a busy weekend. I ordered chicken cersar salad with a side bacon and fresh juice(orange apple lemon and carrot). With 10 minutes we received our meals and those are all yum and nice presentation! My father very satisfied with the coffee and sweet corn fritter and he regretted that his only ordered the regular size. All of us enjoyed the delicious meal and awesome atmosphere!
Elsa
The service is fantastic. All the staffs is so friendly. The coffee is excellent. Especially the prawn linguine is the best in my mind, so delicious!!! That is the nice cafe in ALK.
Sarah Shaw
Nice place and nice coffee. Staff were friendly. However, who I think was the new owner was a little annoying tapping on the window right next to my table to get a dogs attention and then going to announce to me the dogs name. Not ideal when all you after is nice food and some peace and quiet.
Max Lee
I have eaten Salmon Bagel, flavor of smoking Salmon is very nice.Good presentation and service. They supply a various selection of Beverage ,I prefer to pear with apple juice

Our family had a Fathers Day brunch this morning and received great service from the wait staff and yummy fresh organic food. Will definitely be back soon.

Went for lunch today with family and will Definetly be back. Nice location, plenty of seating indoor and out with great coffee and amazing freshly squeezed drinks. the food was delicious and on the generous size portion wise. Would recommend to all. Although today is father day, really busy but it worth to waiting because of the high quality food and good customer service.
Karen Goa
Really poor customer service. My friend (newly arrived from Australia) and I went here for lunch. After nearly an hour, our meal (we were sharing the salmon potato cakes) still had not arrived, despite my asking politely about it after 30 minutes or so. It was busy (Father's Day, probably a bad choice of day) but a number of other diners who arrived later were served before us. We were not given any explanation or an apology - just an offer by the manager/head waiter to take my $8 glass of juice off the bill. It was offered as if we should consider that a privilege rather than compensation. We declined the offer, paid for our drinks and left. I don't fault the two young waitstaff, who were doing their best, but I won't be returning under the current management.
Briana
We went to Hinemoa this morning, at about 10:00. There were 6 of us and we got a table straight away. The decor is a tiny bit outdated but warm and understated. We got served straight away and the two waitresses were great. The coffees were really good and didn't take too long. In our group we got the salmon hash, breakfast bruschetta, eggs been with salmon and 2x baked eggs. Everybody loved their meals and woofed them down! My only criticism would be that the sausage in the baked eggs was pretty average and would do better with a chorizo but apart from that everything was delicious. We'll definitely be back!
Qiuxia
one of my friends reconmended to this cafe to me, and then i come to this cafe almost every weekend with families and friends bacause it's close to my place and it offers nice service and nice food.
Bonnie Wu
it's a very good place to start a new day, have a chat with friends, and relax. my friends and i enjoyed the food and service. we will come back again.
Kayla McMinn
I've been ordering the vege grill every time I get paid! It's an addiction, a yummy one! The place is very cute and small, welcoming and friendly. It's a nice place to relax.

I have been going to this cafe for years, going back to the days it was called Grace, but following a recent 'refurbishment' and a new chef, it has gone down hill significantly. Prices have gone up, service is poor and the salmon potato cakes that have been on the menu for years and my favourite were bland, contained large lumps of potato and hardly any salmon. Additionally, i have always had a half serving (one potato cake instead of two), with an extra egg and always been charged 75% of the full size meal which is normal industry practice, however I was charged full price when I visited yesterday, as I requested an extra egg. This put the cost of an egg at a whopping $4.80. When raised with the service staff, the response was poor and very non customer focused. Due to these disappointing factors Hinemoa Street Organic Cafe are losing two customers who visit Sat and Sun most weekends and who have been customers for numerous years.
Marina Sergacheva
Such a disappointment! Used to be a lovely place until it got moved under a new management. Their chef was not embarrassed to serve overcooked poached eggs, not to mention the wait... Overall, unpleasant experience with tasteless food.
David Kravitz (Fandorin)
Use to be a beautiful place, a real treasure of the neighbourhood. Under a new management a complete downhill, food is disgusting if to compare it to what it use to be. We used to come here often and sad to be here for the last time :(
Sarah Kirwan
Terrible food. Eggs benedict with smoked salmon made my companion sick. His overcooked poached eggs served cold were the highlight. I had fried eggs with hash browns- the eggs were undercooked & hash browns soggy. Not sure how something so simple can be gotten so wrong. I usually love a fried egg and hash brown, who doesnt?! Ciabatta bread was the only edible thing on the plate. Felt cheated paying for such truly terrible food. Nice location.
Kelly Manning
Just had the most amazing banana-berry smoothie. My husband had a short black. Both of us very happy with our drinks. Will definitely be back!
Renee
My usual go-to breakfast is scrambled eggs on toast with a side of avo and salmon. I hadn't heard much of this cafe before, but it's pretty clear by the looks of my pictures I was not disappointed. If you want a bang for your buck, I highly recommend this place! - oh and check out that creative coffee design!
Cindy Ong
We dropped by just for the coffee. Coffee was aromatic but very bitter. The cafe was very quiet on weekday morning. A great place for meeting friends enjoy a morning coffee together.
Helen Gyde
Went for lunch today with a friend and will Definetly be back. Nice location, plenty of seating indoor and out with great coffee and amazing freshly squeezed drinks. the food was delicious and on the generous size portion wise. Would recommend to all, wouldn't like the juices see a price increase however as the price of juice wason the steep side, however beautifully done.
WeiTing Ashley Shyu
Decent sized portions and lovely organic produce. I love their coffees too. I have been here two or three times and always leave feeling satisfied. Nice little cafe. Must try: israeli couscous salad!
Louise
Delicious organic food in a lovely setting. I've been here a few times for brunch and it's a solid favourite of mine. The food is great, the service is friendly and prompt, and the atmosphere is comfortable and modern. It may seem a little bit on the expensive side, but you do get your money's worth in terms of quality and portion size.
Jessica Chen
Would definitely be my local if I lived in the area. Had lunch with two others, all meals more than satisfactory. Good service too- plus lovely decor!
Alan Wilson
Great venue and a deservedly busy place for a wonderful brunch. The omelettes are divine, each one using 4 eggs and the fresh juices are to die for. Attentive staff and reasonable pricing make this place a joy to visit.
Rachael Aroha Bright
I had noticed this place was always busy and so wanted to try it out.

We had the pumpkin pasta and big grill, and really enjoyed both. Great coffee and a yummy smoothie topped it off...

The staff were friendly and the atmosphere was relaxing. Highly recommended.
Jac Hancock
Great coffee, and smoothies! Really good menu with a tasty selection, and the staff are always happy and helpful.
Leanne Archer
We too found this cafe from a Living Social breakfast/brunch deal and thoroughly enjoyed our salmon potato cakes with poached egg and hollandaise sauce and great coffee. With friendly, happy staff and quick service, we will definitely be coming back to this wonderful cafe to try something else from the menu. Glad to be moving into your neighbourhood next month :-)
Vicki McCoy
Definitely worth venturing across the bridge for!! Discovered this gem today via a Living Social breakfast/brunch deal. Well worth the visit. Staff were very friendly and welcoming, drinks were great and food tasted delicious, FRESH and healthy (every mouthful was moreish). Counter food looked delectable (mini muffins for $2.50, rhubarb and custard brioche, carrot cake, chocolate brownie) and we left with a few yummy extras for later in the day. What a wonderful find. We plan to be back again and back again.
Juku
I always went for coffee and pastry there so I can't say anything about the savory dishes. The coffee was always great and so were the muffins or slices or whatever else I had with it. I especially loved the muffins! Yumm! I also really appreciate the use of beer crates as chairs outside and as shelves in the bathroom - contributes to a nice look. I'll have to deduct one star as I don't think it's all that Organic. When I asked about gelatine in one of the pastries with creme cheese, she just got out a container of a supermarket brand to check.

I'd definitely appreciate if they were open much longer - 3pm is too early for a cafe to close!
Lucy Lawes
I was very happy to walk past this little organic cafe once, so I dropped by the next morning.
The coffee was smooth and fantastic, I enjoyed it in the warm sun: the best start to the day! I also had a Raspberry and Apple crumble muffin, which was topped with a surprise of toasted almond. It was deliciously oven fresh, with a satisfying crunchy top.
Service was also friendly and helpful. Would not hesitate to recommend this lovely cafe, you should try it for yourself!
Love Food
Popped in recently, enjoyed a good, wake me up at this time of the morning cup of coffee and a freshly cooked muffin.

We are spoilt for choice when it comes to cafes in this area, so it was a very pleasant experience to find another one that matches up very nicely.
