Review Pastrami And Rye - Auckland Central

Great sandwiches, fast and clear service, fabulous xmas decor with running train circuit on tracks above you. Not.much space to eat and dine in, mostly takeaway but compromise the integrity of the sandwich. But still good. Would come back from French dip and more gravy

Wish I should have tried Pastrami as their shop name! We went there for a breakfast so i ordered some of bf menu which was bacon and caramelized onion with brioche buns something.. So heavenly buttery. and picked cinnamon donut for takeaway. Highly recommend to visit here again for another time.

Best local New Yorker sandwich. Try the 500g works if you have a hanger going on. This is a sure fix! Great selection of fresh juices beetroot ginger turmeric is my winner. Beautiful pastries, almond, chocolate and other very yummy specialities. These guys have won lots of awards and do amazing preserves drop in and see for yourself, try the daily specials like Elvis is back.

This place never disappoints!!! Been here a few times, and the food is superb šŸ‘Œ The staff is very friendly and they serve quite quickly. We have tried a couple of sandwiches, and all are delicious.

Came here on a rainy Saturday. The staff were lovely and by 1.30pm they had sold out most of the cabinet sweets. I got the Roast beef French dip sandwich and the Cuban Hot sandwich with an iced latte and the caramel donut for dessert. Meat and bread ratio was perfect. The Cuban reminded me of the sandwiches I had in New York. I think that has to be my favorite closely followed by the Roast beef. I wanted that gravy to be slightly thicker and lots more of the gravy deliciousness. The coffee was beautiful and the donut was scrumptious. Definitely coming back here again for that Cuban sandwich

Quite a busy place with lots of people ordering take out. Sandwiches were tasty and the bread was crispy yet it didnā€™t hurt the mouth. Recommend the cubano.

An absolute favourite if you are looking for an American Hot Deli experience! Staff are fantastic, food is made with love! Their pastrami is the best! We'd love to see them expand to have better seating for dine in experience Atmosphere is fun, they love holiday decorations! A must - visit!
Jimmy
Whoever made my sandwich. You are a legend . A team of professionals in motion making the greatest food right in front of you. Recommend eat in while it's hot.

We ordered the Reuben as a combo with chocolate chip cookie and soda with a Caesar salad. Caesar Salad - AMAZING! Good anchovy strips throughout, amazing poached eggs, yum dressing and everything was just crisp and fresh tasting. 10/10 Reuben - Flavour so yum but I had so many fatty pieces in mine it let it down a bit. My partner would love those bits but I'm not so keen, especially right now while pregnant. Also can't stand smell or taste if butter so was super grateful that they made me one without butter šŸ„°. 8/10. Cookie - A great texture with a nice crunch around the edges but also a chew. I would've wolfed down the whole thing but the flavour was really eggy so personally didn't enjoy the taste (might be another šŸ¤° aversion though). 6/10 Customer Service - The staff and owner here are honestly so lovely and would come back just because of that! 10/10

Great little sandwich shop tuckaway in the Elleslie village centre. Probably the best sandwich I had in Auckland. Refresh, tasty and full with flavour... Their coffee is really good and I'm a very picky coffee drinker. Recommended!!

Finally, a decent place in Auckland to get a pastrami on rye thats chock full of meat, not the usual Kiwi way of a few thin shavings - these guys dont scrimp on the fillings. And the We've been back twice now and since had the Rueben which is an upgrade to the pastrami on rye with the inclusion of saurkraut, a pickle and swiss. PLus you get a side of either slaw or crisps. The owner has experience working in proper NY deli's and has pulled off an awesome version right here in Kiwiland. . Next time we go it will be for a Cuban and a Lobster Roll. The time after that it will be for their Roto chooks which get rotisserie batch cooked daily and when theyre gone theyre gone so it pays to order ahead. The service is fast and knowledgable and you can sit in the window or outside of it and watch the rest of the world go by drooling at your lovely food. Im a Chef by trade and I give it 5 stars for the fact that what they do, they do it exceptionally well. My wife is from the US and she gives it 5 because it is at least as good - or better - than what she has had in the US, the home of pastrami and rye. So I reckon our combined rating is pretty legit, but you gotta try it for yo'self.

The staff were very friendly and helpful! The guy when cooking was joking and talking which was great service but the best part was the food! It was so tasty!! I had the chicken and gravy hot sandwich! It was delicious! We also brought a ready made sandwich which was good too! My only thing was it was the music was a little loud- but that's just for while we were talking to the chef. Can't wait to come back and try more!

After ordering dinner on Friday night for a family event (chicken, pork, sliders and a range of salads) .. we have had this also for lunch both days of weekend with the amount of food that was provided.., fantastic food and always a warming welcome. Our guests were well impressed! I went for Sunday morning coffee and couldn't resist the smell of the breakfast so ordered bagels all round. Awesome that even our 3 year old got special treatment with a honey bagel and he got to watch it being made. Well done team pastrami and rye.. we will be back ļæ½

I had mix experiences at this place! First time i had a pastrami it was one of the best sandwiches i have had. Which got me to come another time expecting to have the same experience. Unfortunately the sandwich was chewy and full of fat and seemed that its not fresh at all. It was nothing like the first time! Literally half of it was fat and the meet part was chewy! Hopefully you guys focus on keeping the quality of that pastrami as it was!
Carolyn Adams
Best bacon and egg bagel for breakfast today. The watermelon, plum and blood orange juice was delicious too. Highly recommend!!

Hey Team, I've been a long time lover of your shop. However, today I returned after not being in for a while...and was a little disappointed in value of what i got for my $14 Crispy Chicken. Firstly no roll, so I was offered a bun. Which was filled with only chicken..... A few crisps were good and the gravy on the side was great, but I was missing my slaw..? Overall I was just left with a sour taste in my mouth given what I got for my money. Fingers crossed for better next time I come in.

I am loving Ellerslie's newest eatery. The place is warm and inviting, service is great and the food is delicious! The fresh juices or muesli & yogurt is really tasty and good for breakfast on the run. theres always a good selection of sweets and pastries for a sweet tooth like me :) & The Salmon and Goats Cheese bagel is exceptionally good too.

My partner and I each ordered a Reuben sandwich for $13, which is corned beef on rye with cheese and sauerkraut. I was absolutely starving and was really looking forward to this being the traditional deli sandwich. It totally wasn't. The bread was not what I would even call anything close to rye, more like whole wheat, and the corned beef, (while there was a lot of it) was SO salty and SO chalk full of pepper, it was almost inedible. I feel maybe we got the end cuts, because it was full of spices and seasoning, to the point where you couldn't event taste the meat. There also was very little sauerkraut on the sandwich, which might have alleviated some of the salt/pepper taste had there been a reasonable amount. I can't say I'd ever go back, as I wasn't able to finish the one I ordered. I had previously been there for coffees, which were fine, but the sandwich was a big let down.

Haven't had many great experiences at this place since it popped up unfortunately. I've been three times to date. First time they ran out of Rye bread, second time I had to wait twenty minutes or so, and the third time they had run out of Pastrami. Considering there are so many lunch options in Ellerslie I expected a little bit more from somewhere aiming itself at the higher end of the lunch scene. Mate likes this place so may be back, little ruined so far though for me.

Not only was my Reuben extra yummy, the character of the place and staff gives a feeling of authenticity. I must try some of the other food.
Glen Roper
had the Philly Cheese Steak, it was the best I've ever had, and would recommend it to anyone keen, will be back for another when you have these
Rika Berghan
Friendly staff, awesome looking food cabinets . The best crispy chicken roll in Auckland .
Christopher Stephenson
Great coffee and great food! I have eaten in NYC deli's and this is the perfect NZ interpretation of one. the Reuben is definitely worth trying.
Sharron Smaar
Came in for my usual morning for coffee and bacon buttie. Sadly was not impressed this time. Soggy bread and a pile of burnt bacon. Coffee was average this time. Hopefully just a off day for these guys
Logan Devoy
Probably the best goddam sandwich in Auckland. Hands down delicious.
Ashlee Dakota
Was stoked to see there was a vegan sandwich, whomever came up with adding grapes to it is a genius! However looks like it has now been removed from the menu... Lame.
Mike Graham
Great food, great lads, was better than expected. Will definitely go back again - simple food done extremely well, and very good coffee!

Hands down the best reuben sandwich Iā€™ve tried in Auckland šŸ˜ - I ordered both reuben and cuban sandwich and fell in love with both. Price is reasonable for what you get and will def be coming back šŸ˜‹

First time here, enjoyed it. Meaty and delicious

Super delish - no pun intended. Ordered the bacon buttie with fried egg and the reuben NY style. Bacon butties greasy goodness combines with the crispy bottom fried egg and bacon will make you want to order a 2nd. But before you do, try out the reuben to get your pastrami fix because it's definitely comparable with overseas NY deli standards. Only thing I wished for is that my cheese was melted as advertised! Would've scored full marks otherwise. Good stuff
Fairfoodie
Had the Cuban. Delicious. Prices are up there.! Lots of filling. Lovely staff.
Rashmeen Sandhu
I love the vibe of this place- itā€™s super cute, although it doesnā€™t have that much seating. The food is amazing (particularly the bagels), albeit a little pricey. One of the better cafes in Ellerslie.
Daiana Cordoba
Sandwiches to die for ...delicious. And they were ok with my request of no cheese. <br/>Not a lot of sitting space so be ready to be eating in front of the grill
Lynn Le
Crunchy deliciousness!!!<br/>I had the patty melt and my oh my it was a delectable experience for my tastebuds šŸ¤¤

Gotta get yourself one if you haven't try them

Ordered a Cuban sandwich and my friend got the Reuben and we had a half each. While we both enjoyed the Reuben very much, the Cuban was spectacular. Lovely pork flavour with the melty cheese and the pickle to balance everything on lovely soft bread that was grilled to perfection. The supreme coffee was really good too and the service was friendly and attentive despite being busy with takeaways.<br/><br/>We also tried the chocolate caramel slice which was luscious and light and not too sugary which i personally like about desserts.<br/><br/>Would love to see more seating there as it is a lovely atmosphere to be in and will definitely be coming back if I'm ever in the area.

Great place with friendly service, nice to find genuine specialist sandwich deli shop tucked away in Ellerslie. Recommend the Cuban, but pick anything and you canā€™t go wrong. And for those with the sweet tooth I did resist the Jelly Donut but it was tempting.

Fed Deli has always been my go to for a good Reuben sandwhich but Pastrami and Rye gives them a real fight. Love the addition of chips on the side to give a bit of crunch!
Jenny Da
Ordered a ā€œmake it a Reubenā€ on Ubereats and very impressed by the quality of the sandwich. If youā€™re after a hearty quick lunch, this is the one for you!
Vivien @ KJAS Blog
Pastrami and Rye does amazing sandwiches. In a beautiful almost industrial setting, the friendly bright service and their uniforms really bring you to a NY feel.<br/><br/>The Reuben has deliciously fat-streaked pastrami, all house smoked and cured, which gives the sandwich a rich flavour. I would recommend this if you want something with a strong meaty flavour.<br/><br/>Otherwise, if you're a fan of decadent cheesy melts, the Patty Melt is delicious heaven. Chopped scotch steak and melty Swiss cheese line generously buttered slices of toasted caraway rye. It was crunchy melty cheesy goodness with the focus on the flavours melting together rather than loading it with meat.<br/><br/>All sandwiches come on a bed of packet chips and with a pickle. For a decent no frills sandwich with hearty ingredients, this is your place.

For some reason I keep coming back and spending $50+ at this place. Good sandwiches and good workers. Still yet to try every single sandwich so will be back soon

Ordered via uber eats.<br/><br/>I ordered the bacon, tomato, lettuce bagel. I am vegetarian so removed the bacon and replaced with cream cheese.<br/><br/>Yesterday I asked to add on Avo. They did not have any onsite, however rang me and were prepared to drive up the road and purchase one-just for me. Fantastic Service.<br/><br/>Good sized bagel, good fillings. Would like to see the menu a little more affordable-however I've ordered it twice so must be worth it!

Ordered the Reuben to go and it was so good! <br/>The Corned Beef is a little more fatty compared to other Reubens Iā€™ve tried but itā€™s not a bad thing at all. It was soft and tender and the salty and fatty meat paired really well with the Sauerkraut. <br/><br/>Not too sure about their service tho. <br/>I was waiting for my order at the counter and was watching them make the sandwich and they looked so uncoordinated(I donā€™t know if the guy was knew) and flustered. <br/>Also not to mention I waited there a really long time. <br/>They basically couldnā€™t find me and they had made my order. I was literally sitting right I front of them. I donā€™t understand how you canā€™t remember a face. And when I asked that Iā€™m waiting for my sandwich she grabs the one that had been sitting there for over 15mins and didnā€™t even say sorry. <br/><br/>Iā€™d only go back cause the food was actually good.

Pastrami & Rye is a homage to NYC staples such as Katz's. Tried the Reuben (came with a side of chips and pickles) with a long black. Not meat heavy as I expected, but the tenderness of the pastrami is to die for. The balance of flavours is a modern take on this sandwich classic (perhaps a bit healthier). Coffee is also decent. There is not a lot of seating but most customers tend to get takeaway so there is definitely seating on their side benches #nycstyle. Definitely a spot to try!

Been here 4 times now as they are open pretty early. Tried the reuben the cuban the french dip and a patty melt. Cuban was byfar the best. Shops on the small side but takeaway is easy enough

Every time I drive past I keep thinking that I must try this place. And I wish I had done so earlier. The service was efficient. The lady behind the counter seemed to know all the regulars and their orders. The coffee was amazing. The bacon buttie was nice. Yes the place is a bit small. But it is a coffee shop not a restaurant. Also a little bit expensive but well worth it. And the place has a great vibe.

My 2 stars given is due to the wonderful staff and cool decor. If this was based on food alone it would be a 1 Star sadly. I had such high hopes for this place. I ordered a Cuban sandwich, almond croissant and juice. The ratio to meat to bread in this sandwich was crazy. I felt like I was eating all bread and hardly any meat. And with what little meat there was I could not taste it as the flavour was drowned out by too much mustard and pickles. My croissant was dry but had a nice almond flavour. For the high prices they charge here, I expected more.

Always delicious. Great sandwiches and coffee. Friendly service. One of my favorite breakfast places. Reuben is really great. Juices are fantastic as well. Little gem tucked away in Ellerslie.

Came here for lunch as was craving a good sandwich. We ordered the Reuben, Cubano and croque monsieur. All were fantastic. Would definitely come back. Good value too!

Not my kind of flavour unfortunately Friend and I went to this place We both didnā€™t like the taste of the dishes. Chicken pieces ,Their menu doesnā€™t offer much and prices are quite expensive for the portion you get

Yummy lunch today (Wednesday 23 May 2018) here in the quaint Ellerslie Village, we had the Ruben ($14 or $20 w slaw n juice) with slaw n carbonate juice, OMG the meat is actually brisket but like u have never tasted, it's slow cooked n matched with a home massaged sauerkraut n melted swiss cheese, very NYC style - it was divine. Stool bar type seating but not a busy place so was able to dine in. We'll definitely return.

Refreshing outlook with great coffee (when the tall guy makes it!), great to see well dressed personnel working this cafe! Havenā€™t had lunch here as not sufficient space to sit, more of a takeaway place, but I would recommend their coffee.

Uber eats introduced myself and the girls at work to our new favourite coffee and breakfast spot! <br/>The coffees are amazing - as a barista myself Iā€™m fussy as heck about coffee and can say every coffee from Pastrami and Rye has been perfect. Donā€™t know how they do it but Iā€™m lovin it!! <br/>My favourite bagel is the bacon, tomato and avocado. <br/>The bacon buttie is so damn good for a hangover - saved me at work a few times! <br/>Absolutely love this place & would highly recommend.

The BEST sandwiches in Auckland. Love the Cuban & the brekkie rolls. Excellent coffee and friendly service plus an array of divine pastries & baking. One of my favourites. I only wish they had tables so you could eat it.
Kerryj
The Reuben and pastrami on rye both get the thumbs up. Really tasty. The coffee is good and so are the donuts and carrot cake. Friendly staff, attractive layout and a nice change from the usual lunch offerings. Definitely one to go back to.

What can I say I love a good sandwich!. And these guys do a really good one. You have a loyal customer in me!. Keep up the good work šŸ‘. Nice .

By far my favourite local place to pick up coffee! The baristas are always smiling & welcoming!! Shame that it isn't big enough with seating to take the whole family! šŸ˜Š

We just love this place!<br/><br/>The staff are always friendly.<br/><br/>The food is consistently delicious and super fresh (the bread and buns are amazing!). I tried the shrimp po boy and it was so good. I also love their Reuben sandwich, which is always a generous size with bonus chips and coleslaw on the side. <br/><br/>I think that their coffee is the best in Ellerslie.<br/><br/>I would highly recommend this place.

I'm a bit of a Reuben fan and when I heard about this new cafe it had to be tested. Service was quick and friendly. Seating is limited, which results in lots of take aways. My Reuben did not disappoint and was good. Just the right amount of sauerkraut, the cheese was melted just enough to be oozy and the corned beef was at the right temperature. However I could not taste or detect any Russian dressing, which in New York would be classified a food crime!<br/>I've only had one better Reuben in Akl. So with a bit of dressing these guys could be 5/5. <br/>Coffee to go was hot and excellent. I'll try the Reuben again soon!<br/><br/>Tried the Reuben again two weeks ago - still no Russian dressing! Still a good corned beef sandwich 5/5, but you canā€™t call it a Reuben. <br/><br/>Third visit- the saga of the Reuben, unfortunately itā€™s got worse, still a good size but less flavour and on the dry side. Wonā€™t be back.
Nicky
Really enjoyed the Ruben and a bagel. Generous amounts of filling and freshly made to order! Nice selection of sweet things from Bluebells cakery. Coffee and smoothies are also very nice. Not. Lot of space to sit which is a shame but easy to get take away.
Smith
Finally someone is doing good, healthy options for sandwiches. Their not so healthy options are pretty delicious too, just know what you're ordering and bask in your gluttony. Sweets from Bluebells and amazing breads and pastries to complete the decadence, or balance out that healthy vegan sandwich.
Tony Ma
Ordered from uber eats, can't comment much on service apart from it was super speedy!<br/><br/>The cream cheese salmon bagel was amazing. I love it! 5/5!<br/><br/>The chicken was pretty much a dry countdown chicken. 0/5. It's still sitting in my fridge. I think they should update the chicken menu, add flavours or spices to it. Or remove it from their menu as it will only to them harm. <br/><br/>Price: $15-$20pp<br/>Food Quality: 2.5/5<br/>Food Quality: 2.5/5<br/>Speed: 5/5

I got very excited when I heard about this place because I am always keen to try New York style deli places. I couldn't find a menu online so we went in not knowing what to expect.<br/><br/>We ordered Cuban and Reuben sandwiches. You can choose coleslaw or potato chips to go with your sandwich. The sandwiches were made quickly but you need to leave to eat them as there is only a small window bar in the store.<br/><br/>The Cuban looked like a good sized sandwich, the Reuben looks rather average for $13.00. The coleslaw was a small amount of cabbage and carrot drowned in very rich mayonnaise. The ratio was not right and was room temperature. May have been better if it was chilled.<br/><br/>A disappointing combination of limited choice and slightly pricey sandwiches. Ā The search for an excellent sandwich place continues.
Sam
First visit to this cool new spot in Ellerslie.<br/><br/>Incredibly impressed with first of all the magnificent service and then the sandwich. Wowza. <br/><br/>'Bitchin. <br/><br/>Get there now.
