Review Thai Takapuna - Auckland Central

Keith Caetano
I was pleasantly surprised by the quick service and tasty meal. The flat noodles were so yummy and pork cooked to perfection. I left my dark glasses there and the server came down the street to find me and return them! Great service!

Love this place. It's our local. Great tasty food and reasonable prices. Lovely staff too. A 2 minute walk to Takapuna beach, beautiful location.

A bit of a hidden gem in Takapuna with great efficient service and good selection of Thai dishes at reasonable prices though portions are a little on the small size.

Great authentic Thai restaurant in the heart of Takapuna. Nice food selection, great service, nice Thai environment. Photo of fried vermicelli with veggies and prawns. You should go for the red duck though
Jelena Simic
Loved chicken pad thai, lunch price is very acceptable and you get 10% off for takeaway at dinner time. So nice to have food on a sunny terrace. Food arrived quickly and the portions are more than enough for one person to be full afterwards

Very nice service, food was amazing. A great Thai restaurant in the area

Such a beautiful place. Great location right in the heart of Takapuna. Awesome food, great atmosphere, cosy casual dress and lovely staff. I recommend this place if you are looking for a great meal

Good service nice Thai Food staff very friendly

Amazing food with great service & atmosphere. You must try their chicken wings as appetiser. Overall highly recommended!

Meals were tasty and we three enjoyed the food, helpful service. To improve on your service ,it would be improved with minimal delay between order being taken, and the food arriving on our table. But overall, we were very pleased with our dinner at your restaurant.

We had a great meal. Decor is a bit eclectic with touches of Thai culture within a building that doesn't fit, but it was part of the charm for me. The food was excellent and the service was good (although the were thinly staffed and were constantly rushing around). It's a nice quiet haven in the middle of busy Takapuna.

Food used to be tastier. I've had better and cheaper Thai food from most generic food courts and eateries (e.g. Mercury Lane Plaza, K Rd). They cater to vegans which is appreciated. Tofu here is good (crispy outside and silky inside). Atmosphere and service is decent, and staff are nice. It's closer to restaurant prices (they charge extra for rice!), but with the average food not sure I'd go back here.

A group of 18 if us went on a Sunday night and sat in the private back room and thoroughly enjoyed everything. We took our own wine. Had a small mixed plate of entrees and then chose our own main. We found the service and pricing extremely good. Will go back

I was here with my friend for dinner. The staff was very welcoming and had great customer service skills. It’s a BYOW, so it was a plus point for us. The food was yummy and the portion was really good. The menu had lots of options to choose from. Would definitely visit again and would highly recommend! :) Cheers

Super vegan friendly and lovely LOVELY staff...Pad See Ew is the bomb ziggity...huzzah!

Great authentic atmosphere, decor and music. Service friendly and quick. However the food is mediocre and poorly presented. Only slightly better than food-court quality.
I also don't like being asked if want rice. I mean, who has a Thai curry without rice ? The reason they ask is because they charge $2 for a small bowl of rice.
To summarise, great location in central Takapuna close to the beach, but food and presentation is mediocre.

Food takes too long to come out. Ordered 30 minutes ago and asked when our food will come out and was told that it will take extra 15-20minutes.

Wow the dishes are all super flavorful and delicious! It’s one of the best Thai restaurants I’ve ever been to. Highly highly recommend !!!

Decent food and nice casual dinner place. Waiters are polite too. A good one time experience. Loved the starters though. They were the best. Tried almost all of them.
Stephy_NakiGirl
Nice little place tucked away on the Main Street. They have a $13.50 lunch special with a decent amount of options.
We both chose a stir fry - both the meat & veges were fresh & well cooked.

*Price : a little expensive
*Atmosphere : fancy
*Amount : appropriate
*Taste : good
*Service : okay
*intend to go next time? not really
(All these are personal opinion)

This is the worst thai place weve been to. Not Authentic at all. chicken curry was damn sweet and they only put 2 average size chicken pcs n a few small ones. Ptom yum was also swt....im sure i can cook better thai food than this place
Torra
We went there for lunch. I ordered pad thai. It tasted like sweet ketchup noodle. I know what it should taste like. My wife ordered kao pad and it was like cheap chinese fried rice with cheap frozen veges. There was no thai flovour. Worst thai experience ever.
Cat1307
Worst Thai food ever… We ordered two dishes and here were nothing looked like the pictures on the menu. Just don’t go… Don’t waste your money and mood…

On my most recent food delivery I have to say I was so wildly disappointed by the Pad Kra Paowi I ordered. You get tiny portions of average food, especially considering what they are charging. Overpriced.
Vanessa Egan
Have eaten here a few times no problem but will NOT be going back after ordering chicken veggie dish and the chicken being off. Smelt like it had been sitting int he sun all day. Absolutely disgusting and ruined my whole evening. Luckily I smelt it before I ate any. Contacted the restaurant for an explanation but no reply. Disgraceful and dangerous.

wth I paid $19.9 for the salad and it is not even half of the container. It doesnt come with rice and the flavour only “salty”

Not recommended.

I’m a Thai food lover and today I’m really disappointed about this restaurant. If you wanna sell small portion with the expensive price at least you have to make it flavour.

So bad

I like it :)normally I don't eat spicy food because my tongue is a giant baby, but their food here was really nice. Spicy, but manageable. Give it a try for those who normally don't eat spicy food. I had a curry chicken dish
Karenna Mollard
Extremely poor quality Thai. Waste of my money. Won't be returning. Lacking in vegetables and flavour, felt like I was eating a supermarket microwave meal.
Lucia
We ordered the whole fish and it tasted awful. Completely over cooked. Husband made the comment of “worst fish we’ve had all year” not great!!
Lauren Chen
We ordered a curry chicken and a fried chicken with ginger, both are too sweet and too little for us. We strongly do not recommend this place.

We walked in and were seated next to the counter. We had a stroller so we would hav liked a space that was more spacious. The table only had two chairs. They didnt offer togice us a high chair or another chair. I think they expected my 2yr old to just sit on the stroller.. they only gave us 2 glasses of water and 2 sets of cutlery. It was like my 2 yr old was totally invisible.

We ordered pad thai and pad kao?(fried rice). The pad thai was really yummy, lots of sprouts and cashews so had a goood texture.
The fried rice that we ordered for me to share with my 2 year old was below average. There was too much rice, maybe 4 pieces of tiny carrots and some chicken and beans and corn. Would have liked to see more carrots so that my boy can hav more veges! It was too much rice dominated.. totally not worth $12.50. Had no thai flavours whatsoever.

Would like to go again but they need to improve customer service and think abt parents with children more. Ie. offer high chair, offer smaller cutlery, offer a cup of water etc

Takapuna Thai is not only expensive but lacking in Thai flavour. Though they do prepare their food quite rapidly, the preparation finished after 5 minutes of waiting. If you really need a meal urgently then this would be a go to place, otherwise please avoid.
Richard J
Went there for a family dinner , staff are very pleasant and happy . The food is ok a bit light on spice given this is Thai food and should be full of strong fresh flavours , its expensive as ... $ 70 for three of us with no desert .

All were worth the money! It feels so good eating in this place very cozy and clean. Food tastes soooo soooo good... though a bit affordable but really worth your money. A must try!
Joe Yelkcoh
Yummy food lovely service nice setting! Can't go wrong. The serving staff are attentive and friendly. We had a curry and a pad thai, both lovely. With lots of chilli sauce provided on request.

Our revisit to Thai Takapuna was a good experience.

We ordered tom yum kong (Thai sour and spicy prawn soup), pineapple fried rice, mixed veggies and sweet and sour noodle salad.

The food was tasty and portion was just right for 4 of us.
The meal cost us less than $80 which was quite reasonable.

Give it a try!

This is the first thai restaurant I ate in Auckland. Good service and food taste and quality both were good. The staff was very friendly which was the best part. Was fairly quite on a weekday afternoon.

This place is always solid. Has great authentic Thai food both lunch and dinner. Staff super friendly and patient (was a grumpy old lady hassling the staff the other day over nothing and the staff kept smiling all the time when most people would have responded differently).

The Larb is probably my favourite, very authentic with the ground toasted rice crunchy feel, I like to add a bit more chili powder. The Yum Woon Sen also great, noodles tender with a bit of textures, lots of seafood and flavour.

One of my favourite lunch spots.

We dined tonight as a family of 4. We ordered 3 entrees: money bags, curry puffs and spring rolls delivered quickly and tasted good. Mains were chicken pad Thai and stir fry chicken and vege in oyster sauce for adults and the kids menu of deep fried nuggets, hot dogs, chicken tenders and fries. Service was very friendly, although they forgot the wine they apologised and I got it soon after. The food was very bland, no taste no favour. Definitely wouldn't recommend.
Chadwick Wang
We picked this place pretty randomly. The food was average with the curry being too sweet and the stir fry being overly salty. The TomYum soup which is a must pick everytime we go to a Thai restaurant was below par too. To sum it up, never dine out without a plan.
Rebekah
My partner and I are regular customers here (the staff may or may not know our names). The food is amazing, especially the vegetarian pad thai. The staff are awesome, kind and polite. The service is quick and you never have to wait very long for your meals :)

Best Thai food I have found in New Zealand! Spent over a year living in Thailand and Thai Cafe Takapuna is the only place where you will get the original, authentic, fragrant Thai food experience - simply delicious. But you have to know how Thai food should normally taste...if you are expecting a non spicy, greasy stir fry, what some Chinese take aways are serving as Thai food, then this is the wrong place. In addition to that, the value for money for lunch is great, with vegetarian dishes starting from $13. The service is as Thai authentic as the food, lovely and welcoming. Can not recommend this place enough - for people who are seeking REAL Thai food. Try the Red Curry or the Massaman curry - full of flavours and spices or another must: the Phad Thai - tastes like in a food court in the middle of Bangkok.

Warm and cosy interior
I liked the atmosphere and friendly lady that served us !
Food was so delicious would definitely come back but found it just a little pricey ..only reason being somewhere like zap can do similar dishes at lower prices!
However good for date nights and ocassions
Good food, friendly staff ,special food is very yummy!!! If you are in Takapuna highly recommend . They also have Thai buffet on wed-Thr from 11.30 am to 2.30 pm. Only $15 you can eat as much as you want and the foods is very tasty as in Thailand.

Being of Thai origin makes us really picky when it comes to dining out thai. This place however, nailed authentic thai cuisine. Upon strolling across takapuna beach, we decided to give this place a try. What an amazing experience it was! The food were unbelievably authentic. I can say there is no other thai restaurant in NZ that could make their noodle soups as close to thai taste as Thai Takapuna! The salad dishes were also really tasty and packed with fresh vegies. Service was excellent with the front lady staff being really friendly and prompt with her order taking. Ambiance and atmosphere is really nice with imported Thai sculpture and fresh flowera. Hygiene is on point however the toilet is combined and a little cramped. Def recommend for anyone who has been seeking REAL thai cuisine!^^
I Am Hungry
Had dinner here tonight, had booked in advance so got the table as place was very busy, we ordered chicken cashewnut and veg stir fry in mains and spring rolls in entree....the entree came fast but food took some time..understandable as the place was busy... food quality and taste..good... service average.....decor....good...even though it feels like its a garage kinda place..but is well maintained....parking can be a problem...a little overpriced

Value for money, very good customer service, their curries are very yammy and worth trying ! Been here a few times and will always coming back ! I would also recommend Tom Kha soup. The broth is mouth-watering ! It's also very beautiful and warm inside :)

I had a nice lunch here the other week. I had pad med mamuang with chicken, and a coke zero. It had just the right amount of chilli with it. My friend enjoyed his lunch too. Very affordable as well.

If I'm after a cheap Asian meal in Takapuna, this is where I go. I've been here a couple of times and I've always had good service. This place do lunch time deals so it's cheaper then.

I really love their money bags. We always get it when we dine in. It's crispy and nice.

As for their mains, you can't go wrong with pad thai but I keep ordering the Pad Priew Wan. My sister always orders the curry.

Me and my wife went for dinner last week. The place was quite quiet.
I ordered a pang gang (red curry, chicken) and my wide ordered a pad thai.
And I ordered a beer.

I start with the bad, the staff forgot about my beer and I had to remind them after our food came out.
The thai red was not as hot as it should be.
...
The good:
The pad thai was perfect.
The staff were very friendly, so I forgave the missing beer.
Its a good place to go for a quick feed,
All in all its a fairly average thai, nothing particularly bad or good

We went there for lunch today at 11:40am. We found that the owner/manager does not want to add more stuff into these plates, even they were already nearly empty. They would expect customers to consume the remaining "sauce" (just sauce, no meat inside, even its supposed to be chicken curry dish) completely, before they would even consider to re-fill. We had lunch there from 11:40 to 12:50, and we observed the manager did not even re-fill any of these plates even once! During the whole lunch hours, there was absolutely "re-fill" at all! They would be much happier if you order something else, rather than having buffet in there (Buffet costs $15, one ordered dish costs around $12.50), I guess there will be much more margin for a-la-carte. We saw at least 3 groups of customer coming, looking at those near-empty plates (almost empty, apart from the sauce), and walked away. Funny enough, the manager saw that and did nothing! Both the service and food were horrible, unless you like to spend your $15 eating "sauce". I would give "Thai Takapuna" a ZERO rating, if I can.

At least once a week I call up for takeaway.
The food is great.
Very tasty and good size.
Lovely quick service, always awesome when your hungry, food was as Thai should be. Most Thai placed offer as much rice as you like but this one you had to buy a bowl if you wanted one. I had prawn vegetable , think it's called goong met or something like that. The lighting is nasty in there makes the food look awful but it wasn't . Big elephant on the wall was cool but yeah the lighting ????????

I ordered from here the other night. The red and green currys were delicious but the sweet and sour pork was over cooked with not a lot of flavour. For what we received I found this a little over priced.

We go here all the time and it's great! Fast and yum and the people are so lovely and accommodating. Actually has vegan food and they let you adjust the menu for your dietary requirements! Going there tonight!

This is a regular lunchtime spot for us. The service is quick, however getting the order right is a bit hit and miss on some days. Lucky all the dishes are ok across the complete menu.

Most days our favorite option is the Pad Thai.

If you feel like Thai and are walking past, it is not a bad option.

We have eaten here a few times now and on every occasion the staff are very friendly, and the food is great.
We have just been again for lunch today and had the lunch buffet. What a find. Finally a place to go for a buffet Thai meal that gives you plenty to choose from and things to try that maybe you havent before. We were very impressed and for the cost it was a most enjoyable lunch. We most certainly will be back for it, long may it continue. Thank you all for your impeccable and friendly service. Highly recommended.

Hear Hear to Garry C! We went last night and saws the reviews when looking for location and thought we had made a mistake also.
But the service was great, the only choices you couldn't have on the voucher were soups & chefs specials, but already knew that when I bought it.
We had combination entrees and they were great. Pad Thai with prawns for main, and there were heaps of prawns. Other main was duck curry - pretty good deal if you ask me.
Even the complimentary wine was not a bad wine - much better than some I have tasted.
Michelle & John

Flew from Christchurch to Auckland for weekend. Saw a deal voucher so thought we would give it a go. Having read the reviews we were a little concerned we had made a mistake. Well actually this place is great. Food excellent and service was fine, staff were pleasant and as it was busy did there best. The worst part was seeing and hearing the attitudes of some of the customers. To be honest we were disgusted and felt bad for the staff. Wake up Auckland this place is great, give these people a break! if we go up that way again we will go back there. PS if you haven't smelt fish sauce I suppose you could say it smells like cats breath.
Hayley
I had the worst dining experience of my life here. We arrived and were seated with water but no drinks menu then were ignored for about 20-30mins. We ordered mixed entrees which came out within 5 minutes of ordering as they were just thrown in the deep fryer then chucked on a plate. Then my main dish came out which smelled and tasted exactly like cat breath and I couldn't escape the smell because of the elevated bowl. I ate about two forkfuls then gave up and hated handing over 30$ for it. I proceeded to go to the supermarket and get more food after as my poor abused stomach was so disappointed.
Holly Dombroski
Love this place it is a regular favourite! the food is good, the service is good and the cocktails are cheaply priced!!
James
This place is pretty poor. The food is average at best and the staff are argumentative and not entirely pleasant. I had a voucher which said I could have any entree (it said the words "Any Entree") and any two mains, but they decided that they were only going to let me choose one entree (money bags, samosa = rubbish).

Needless to say we won't be going back.

We order takeaway from Thai Takapuna every week and the food is consistently delicious. Staff are very friendly and accommodating. As regulars they know our custom order when we call. We also eat in occasionally and service is very attentive and meals arrive fast. My only *minor* complaint is I always feel a little uncomfortable with all the wall mirrors as it forces you to watch other diners eating and vice versa. That may say more about me than them though ;)
Definitely a favourite in our house!
