I recently dined at Khana, in St Heliers, on a busy Saturday night. Though the restaurant was bustling, leading to a longer wait time for the food, it was understandable given the circumstances. The owner's pleasant demeanor and the helpful staff made the experience enjoyable. Most importantly, the food was exceptional, with flavors that were both rich and satisfying. Khana is certainly a place I would recommend for a delightful Indian meal.

Very authentic Indian food unlike most Indian restaurants in Auckland that serve sugar laden curries. Very welcoming environment. Loved the hospitality of the staff. Excellent!

I ordered goat curry, however I received boneless lamb curry. I definitely know the difference in taste and texture between two. Edit: Changing my review to 5⭐️ after acknowledging what possibly could have happened? Owner also compensated with a complementary dish. Great flavours.

This has been my regular place for a great feed, since moving to the area. Never dined in, only had takeaway but the food is always fresh, hot and absolutely delicious. Previously I've often struggled to get clear answers about vegan options (especially on Uber eats and other apps) but it was very clear and easy to request at Khana. Staff are lovely and always keen to help. Prices good for the area.

Have eaten take out from here and the food has always met my expectations l order something not on the menu and thank goodness they know how to make it. I had a complimentary meal which l loved can’t really fault it but l do like it 🌶 spicy. The staff are always helpful and hospitable. Keep up the lovely food. My local favourite Indian. A++

We just love Khana. Their meals are super tasty and they are very good at catering to your “spice” requirements. They sponsored youth cricket in our area and are a great community orientated business. Definitely my choice for local takeaways!

Went there tonight to celebrate birthday. Real Authentic food! The chef did not disappoint. Each dish had its own flavor. One of the best naan and roti I have had. The service was amazing from the get go. I will definitely be coming back here!

We love the meals from KHANA. The Onion Bhajjis today were fresh and delicious. However, we had ordered the Vegetable Biryani, mild, this evening. It was not mild. Biryani spices should be aromatic and fragrant. This wasn’t. The dominant flavour was chilli. So a bit disappointing.

Longggg time customer and I love this place. The most authentic Indian restaurant that I have found in Auckland. Last night I had a hot Dhal Makhani and it was possibly the best meal I've ever eaten! The staff are ALWAYS lovely and the food is a delight. Keep it up team and I'll see you very soon for more 🤤 Ngā mihi

Lucky to have such a great eatery in our suburb. Khana in St Heliers has a great variety of more authentic style of dishes. Staff are always so friendly. And love the cosy restaurant with bonus addition of little outdoor dining spot at the front. Mixed platter and lamb biryani are faves. Chef will tone down to mild any dishes to suit. Keep up the good work and smiling faces Suraj and team.

I had the most amazing curry from Khana last night, absolutely delicious and as usual wonderful customer service. The staff are warm, friendly and efficient and the food is consistently great. The best Indian food for miles around why would you go anywhere else when we are lucky enough to have Khana on our doorstep.

3/11/19 - Update to my negative review below. I returned to Khana tonight with a group of 9 people. Wait from order to service was fine. Meals were great with complimentary comments all round. That included a Brit who had just flown in and said it was the best curry he had eaten in a long time. Service was friendly. A big improvement and has lifted my rating back up again. Original review --> Phone order at 6pm, and was told 20 minutes wait. Arrived 6:20 and was told another 5 minutes. 6:35 received my order with the obligatory apology for the wait. Like many other suburban eateries Khana prioritise the delivery companies who get take 30-35% off them. I felt sorry for their dine-in customers. Won't eat there again or risk the pickup experience again. Also one of the 3 dishes was very ordinary and "kiwi hot" does not mean mild.

Unfortunately the food lacked flavour wasn’t seasoned correctly and considering it was a lamb dish there was almost no meat at $19 for this meal not value for money.

My partner and I had a lovely meal here. Fantastic food and great service. I would highly recommend Khana to anyone looking for a nice relaxing meal in house or at home.

Best indian restaurant in Auckland. Good flavour and good value. You can taste all the fresh ingredients used in the curries. Full of flavour. Must try menu items are: garlic cheese naan, lamb ragada, hyderabadi dal, dal makhani, samosa, and karahi paneer.

Best Indian food and at reasonable prices.

Wonderful food, great service

Both curries were good but the garlic naan barely tasted of garlic plus it was chewy and the samosas were bland. Luckily I checked the food bag when I got to the car because the samosas were missing!

The worst part was the service. I was told my order would be ready in 50 minutes but it took 70 minutes. Once I arrived I was told my order was always going to take 70 minutes and they were behind with delivery and pickup orders.

In the 20 minutes I waited, 5 people came in to pick up food and only 1 person left with food, despite food being visibly being put in takeaway bags. Not sure who this food was for. It was clear this restaurant is incredibly disorganised which leads to the poor service.

We booked and went for a family meal. Waitress very overworked but pleasant. Manager arrived to help over an hour later. One meal did not arrive and Manager/owner blatantly blamed the waitress. We knew she had our order correct and that is very poor behaviour on her part. Really unimpressed.

Staff are great , food is excellent! Best indian in the eastern area. The Medium is a good heat for us little hotter than alot of places :)

Delicious food, friendly service, what’s not to love? We were sent here by friends who live in Orakei & they said it’s the best Indian food in the area, and they have tested them all.

Curry and Naan was cold. Munched the whole thing then vomiting and diarrhoea followed all night. 2nd time this has happened from this same store.
Luz !
The food is at take away level. I found it a bit heavy. Tried a chicken with coconut and lamb cooked for 2 hours once and chicken tikka another time. I think chicken tikka was the best and the nhan was good. You don’t get enough rice for the amount of curry.

Very unimpressed with this meal which was ordered for a friends birthday dinner. Told our takeaway order would take 30 minutes, restaurant was not busy with 2 tables seated. Had to ask after 45 minutes and was told it was nearly ready. In the end it took over 50 minutes to receive our order. The curry was warm but the entrees, naan and rice were close to cold. Curry taste was average with the mild curry having more spice than the 'medium'. Would give 1 start but the naan (cheese and garlic) could be one of the best naans around if it was served hot.

Friendly and welcoming staff with amazing, tasty food! Great quality produce and meats that never fails to leave me satisfied. A staple restaurant that I find my family and I always going back to.

Khana is great! I had chicken ragada both times I went. The prices are fair and reasonable. The dishes have very sizeable portions and I am always left wanting more! Also very good service!

First time ordering from Khana through Uber Eats. Butter Chicken and Rice and 1 Naan bread . Was very small portion all sauce and few pieces of chicken for the price paid of $37.

My friend and I had a good dinner yesterday. The cottage cheese curry was tasty!! Nice ambiance, efficient service. Definitely will be back.

I had an amazing evening at Khana with my friends and family. The food was delicious and service was excellent. I will be returning ASAP as their prawn masala was exquisite. Would highly recommend Khana for a wonderful dining experience.

At this order we got the $62 promo takeaway (2 meals, rice and naan) which took 40 mins to make but had to wait another 10 mins for it in the shop and it was hardly enough for 2. Lots of rice and sauce, hardly any meat.
Very disappointing. Won’t be back

One of those restaurants opened over public holidays.

We ordered paneer kofta and mixed platter which consisted of lamb, samosa, chicken tandoori and onion pakoras.

Paneer kofta was quite dry however, its texture and taste was pleasing. They served freshly cooked food with right amount of spices.

The customer service person was very friendly and courteous too which made the experience even better :) Would definitely recommend this place to others and might pop in again for a take away or to have heavy and rich Indian lunch :)

We had tried Khana takeaway and this was our first experience dining in since they opened the seated restaurant a year ago. The maitre'd was excellent - very friendly and welcoming with prompt and helpful but not intrusive service. We started with their special entree a tandoori fish dish that was melt in the mouth soft and delicious. It was accompanied by the pickled red onion which they told us is popular, we can see why. For our mains we had the Khana specials, goat curry (NZ hot) and chicken ragada (mild). The goat dish could've been hotter still and that would've been fine - we might ask for Indian medium next time! - however had great flavour and tender meat due to being slow-cooked. The chicken ragada is something different, a lemon-based curry, also very flavoursome and quite light. Both dishes had noticable spices in them, always a good sign. To accompany, the bastmati rice was good quality as you can tell from the separate grains and strong scent and flavour. Our plain naan bread was OK - have had better but it was fine. And condiments, pickle and raita were great. Finally, we made room for the chocolate ice cream dessert and were glad we did as it was delicious, thanks to the secret ingredients we are still trying to work out. We spent more than intended but were happy to, it was all good value and very tasty and enjoyable. Look forward to a return visit :-)

Great Indian Restaurant! The service was exceptional especially the Maitre'd.

Samosa for entree was fresh and delicious! Butter chicken was the best I have ever tasted - perfect amount of spice. Beef Vindaloo great too!

Look forward to our next visit!

This is my family's local and it is amazing!! The curries are packed full of flavour and so reasonably priced. The garlic naan is delicious and the goat curry is a must try. One of the best things about this place is the service, it seems to be a family run business and the staff are all just so lovely and passionate it makes for a really great environment. They all are so polite and attentive. Went last night and they had just put a new curry on the menu which they let us try for free with our mains and it was so good that we will be ordering it next time! Also a must try is the homemade ice cream - both flavours are so delicious like nothing I've ever tried before!

I've dined at Khana about eight times over the past three months. Once you've been you'll want to return. There's something about the food. It's authentic; at least for one who hasn't been to India it conveys an authenticity. It's like one would imagine it to be. No kind of westernised, sickly version of butter chicken from this kitchen. I've seen families there, large groups, couples and elderly couples and everyone without exception seems to be enjoying it. I've tried about a dozen of the dishes and without fail they all impress me. The naan is fabulous. Just the right texture and taste. Crisp but not crunchy. The naan has that consistency you'd expect. It's a pity there's only so much one can eat. All the meals have had plenty of meat; chicken and wonderfully tender lamb, goat and the beef vindaloo was the best I'd ever had. The portions are very generous. If you're not a meat eater then there's the dal which is perfectly cooked and seasoned. In all the dishes, it's clear that this chef understands the art of mixing and balancing spices. In every dish I could identify the spices. They're fresh and obvious in every dish yet they blend so naturally together to present a perfect sauce to the meat. I've not seen in any of the dishes the overuse of oil as mentioned here in another review. The meals are very attractively presented. The Basmati rice is perfect. The service was excellent. The toilets were very clean; spotless actually and that can't be said about most restaurants. A bit of housework at the front door step and outside wouldn't go amiss and the young man who travels off with the take aways could do without his baseball cap in the restaurant but otherwise I can't really fault the presentation of the premises and the staff. The waiter is very alert and attentive. I've added a couple of pictures which may not do justice to the food. You need to go and try it for yourself. I live three kilometres from the restaurant and I don't mind travelling there at all. It's well worth the trip. I recommend this restaurant without reservation. There are many places serving so called Indian meals across Auckland but you'll go a long way to find one as good as this. It has to be in the top two or three that I've ever been to.

After a poor first experience we gave Khana a second try. The first time was bad, and unfortunately the second attempt even worse, by far the worst Indian meal I've ever eaten (and I've eaten curries in India so feel like I have a decent idea about what is a good curry!).

The Naan bread was VERY burnt (on both occasions), and the curry's had TINY portions of meat. Literally a few pieces of cheap quality chicken (dark, gristly, foul tasting) - that made me feel sick. The oil had separated so much on one of the curry's that it had turned into an inedible mess (check out the photo).

I don't know what I was thinking giving this place a second chance, perhaps I thought it couldn't get worse... I was wrong, very wrong.

It is really hard to give an Indian takeaway higher than 3.5. But saying that the food was very tasty. And the spices were well balanced. The butter chicken was the normal affair, but the kids enjoyed it! The lamb korma on the other hand was really delicious. The lamb was tender and the gravy actually had cashews and a sprinkling of almonds. The naans were soft and freshly made. So what was missing? I guess maybe I need to be sure that it wasn't a one off thing. So I guess I'll just have to go back and see how it fares!

Ordered a chicken madras hot, delivered. Delivery was speedy and people were friendly. The meal was disappointing. It was sweet and creamy as opposed to its description which is a South Indian curry.

Hands down the best Indian I've had in New Zealand!! I'm a vegetarian and there were so many great options to choose from. Amazingly fresh and authentic flavours. A must try if you live in the eastern suburbs!

Excellent indian food!! The staff is welcoming and took good care of us! Chef Anthony also personally visited us to check on the spice! Overall amazing experience and highly recommend the biryani!

Absolutely the best... the food is so aromatic that it uses all senses to enjoy... Very reasonably priced for what is a top notch little restaurant. Khana is very definitely the gem in Maskell Street and the surrounding area. Right up there with the very best.

Visiting friends in St Helliers this weekend we decided to stay in but order a good meal and watch a few movies. I ordered online for delivery. Chicken Tikka Masala, Beef Vindaloo, Lamb Saag and a few butter chickens. naturally naan and a few starters. On ordering the meal we received a message that our meal would be delivered in 30 minutes and it arrives five minutes earlier than expected. All meals where set up on the island and we got stuck in. The meals were still hot and the naan was freshly prepared as they weren't like a rubber band. The Vindaloo was exceptional, not extremely hot but spicy enough to till enjoy the flavours. The beef was tender and you could cut through the pieces with a spoon. I tried some Saag and enjoyed the texture and flavour of the spinach. For a takeaway meal this was definitely worth every cent and definitely worth a revisit. Fresh, fast, tasty and tender makes for a great meal on a cold Saturday night. Well done to all at Khana.

I'd rave about a good Indian curry if I found one. Well this one is right up there. One does not realise the diet of food hall brain washes your palette until you get a good curry. On a recent visit to the vet id dicovered this takeaway only stall at the back of Maskell Rd shops. Had the chicken saag (5/5) as veges ie spinach gives a mild sense to those overpowering spices. Also their Lamb rogan josh sauce was divine. The meat was big and chunky cooked and very tender. One of two off putting points was I had a piece of chewy sinew the size of an egg yolk as one piece. Quality and cust experience is important so half point off there. 4/5.
I ordered both medium hot. Be aware their med hot is on the side of quite hot bearable with a drink and pace yourself with this more-ish food!!
Disappointing level of authentic basmati rice only cos you need the equalising effect. So getting a naan should be top up but I had. ( had botany food hall butter chicken for lunch w a naan).
Entree was the onion bahji. For $8 you get 4 under sized. So really only 2. These were disappointing as they were over deep fried and too hard and possibly old stock recooked.1/5.
Of they got the fringe issues of sinew pieces and overfrying sorted id give it a 5. Also this food would shake Curry house and Mission bay's jewel of India a bit if they went to the main drag.
After a revisit have dropped Khana back to 3. was looking forward to a good curry with something different. Still outstanding curry sauces. This time i ordered Butter chicken. It was rich tomato was dominant and cream was just the right level and a spicy but not hot medium.
Disapponting Naan bread hence the reason to mark them back given Naan is a basic. Naan was either prepared much earlier and reheated or was made last night and this time burnt. Chewy and oily 1/5. The other dish was a misorder as I had asked for balsti and got saag. Possibly was an honest mistake.

Khana is our favourite takeaway option. Delicious authentic fresh food. Reminds us of great curry houses in London & Birmingham.

You can't go wrong - but our current faves are Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Rogan Josh, Lamb Sagwalla and the starter platter was great too.

It beats the competition in at least a 7km radius, if not Auckland.

VERY reasonable prices.
