Review Horse & Trap - Auckland Central

Awesome place, fish burger is the best in town and the Sunday roast was great. Outdoor seating for when the sun is out and friendly staff. They make there own beef patties for the burgers and they are great!

Really great atmosphere, food was so good! It took an hour for us to get it though. Nobody else was really ordering food apart from 2 other tables so not sure why it took over 45mins for our food to come and we were starving. However when it did come was so nice. Would really recommend the Japanese karage chicken salad and burger and chips as they were delicious.

Had lunch here. Very good service and nice environment. Braised pork belly is a little soft; pizza of the day is good. Fish and chips for kid. And brownie and coffee too. Average $30 each adult

What a great establishment, the friendly staff accommodate your every requirement. The stallion pizza is a must and the loaded chips are bang on every time, make sure to request the chips with cheese and gravy. Absolute game changer.

This place has come through some hard times to now excel. I enjoyed it in the old days. There were challenging times in between due to cost and light rail restrictions. But the rebirth is awesome under new management. What a gem, great food, great atmosphere, attentive bar staff, and a manager who lives to give. If you used to go and got put off, give it a go. If you've never been you are missing out. But definitely check the daily specials and time your visit for a win, the food is restaurant grade, not pub easy. Highly recommended.

My first time at the Horse and Trap. Friendly place. Jason the landlord welcomed me and later sat down for a chat with me and friends. Like a proper pub, your local where people are pleased to see you. Excellent food, friendly staff, looked after very well. I can see why it’s my mates local.

Great little bar, I've always wanted to visit but hadn't got around to. Now I've been, I'll be back for sure, great outdoor area, some covered to protect you from a chilly breeze 👍👍

Our own version of the Cheers bar where everyone does know your name. We have been running workshops upstairs for years for clients. And we love nothing more than a drink in the bar chatting with the friendly owner, Jason, afterwards. The menu is made of good old fashion pub food 🥩 with something for everyone. And they have a wide selection of beers 🍺 and wine 🍷 Very friendly staff and locals and nothing is too much trouble. Highly recommend as a local watering hole.

Haven't been to the Horse and Trap for ages, but it has a good selection of food and beers and the prices are ok. The ribs were a big serve & other family had the roast lamb, which was apparently very good. Two fires inside made it a warm & welcome respite from the cold night outside.

Great place for a Sunday lunch, especially when it's sunny. Indoor/outdoor flow and friendly staff who came to check up on our group quite often. For the food, the plates are generous and the ribs or sandwiches looked the best, although the quesadilla was made with ingredients a little too different for me to enjoy it as much as my mate's plates haha. The train goes by every 5 min or so but isn't too disturbing outside at all. Decent bit of street parking at least when it's not busy. We'll surely come by again when meeting up in Mt Eden

Nice atmosphere, good place to hang out and drinking. The food was okay.

Amazing food! Great service. Family friendly on Sunday lunch.

Called in for lunch. Had the Thursday sirloin steak. Steak was 300gm and was cooked exactly right. I ordered rare as I do not trust most chefs to cook it correctly, as I would prefer a medium to rare steak. So in hindsight, I would have no problem ordering the steak I would have preferred, as I am pretty sure it would have been spot on. Thank you chef! The service was friendly and efficient.

Beautiful stew with mash and buttered cabbage. Couldnt ask for better. Hubbys roast was lovely, although the red cabbage was really really spicy. Deserts great. Will definitely be back

Have been a few times now, food is good the staff are always friendly and the place has a good atmosphere about it definitely worth checking out
Peter Brannan
Pub type atmosphere, bit noisy on the deck as the trains are very close so better inside. Food was very good, had the curry, partner had 2 starters, the polenta and salt and pepper squid, polenta was a little overcooked but the squid was perfect and both came with wonderful sauces. Good service. Recommended

Nice pub with a good atmosphere. Nice food. Very quiet on a Thursday which was a surprise.

We were there before a concert at the Powerstation. Food was great, nice pizza!! Good drinks and nice vibe too. We were here on a Tuesday so also quiz night but there was no crossover as we were outside. Lots of seating available in and outdoor too.
Rod Klaassen
Tuesday we popped in for a quick dinner. Nice to see gluten free pizza as an option and it tasted good and the base wasn't like cardboard! H&T never fails to please.

We had a 21st function in the downstairs room on Saturday night. The whole evening was fantastic, everything went off without a hitch. The Horse and Trap staff were super helpful and friendly. The food was also exquisite. The venue is fantastic and the outdoor fireplace gave it all a super ambiance. Definately highly recommend this venue.
Tracey Sutton Pieters
Awesome venue. Had a function in The Stables last night. We had an amazing time, the manager and all bar staff were great and easy to deal with. Kitchen staff were very accommodating with dietary requirements (vegan and gluten free options). All in all a very pleasant and enjoyable time was had by all.
Leah Williams
Great atmosphere, the service was on point and the food was lovely. Definitely recommend the Pony Pizza.
Phil Clark
Great venue and I love the new out door deck area which is well done and really opens out the bar. The beers in my view are rather pricey. I ordered a pizza and although ok, to me wasn't great. The base was too soft for my liking as I enjoy a firm base which doesn't flop. I've had much better pizza's. 0verall I like the vibe of the bar with the new deck area.
Stacey Corcoran
Great dinner and service. Really friendly staff and nice atmosphere. A good place to go for dinner and a few drinks. Will be back :)

Great bar, friendly bar staff, owners take the time to get to know the patrons. Never had a bad meal here, free entertainment regularly and a good mixture for all ages. Major renovations make this a great, fresh, local. Recommended.

It was good! Great atmosphere !! Staff very friendly and helpful with options for allergy. Very yum appetiser and main, liked it lots. however the deserts where not very nice in comparison.

On Friday 25 November 2016 I was the DJ at a Singles Party at the down stairs bar at the Horse and Trap. There were over 100 people and it was a great night. The staff were very obliging and the facilities were second to none. The dance floor was packed inside and if you wanted to chat you could go outside. Thank you Horse and Trap and see you on Friday 20 January 2017 for the next Party. Alan Reeves Going Bananas.

Went with four other people for someone's birthday, spent a reasonable amount of money and they would not allow us to eat our cake.

Had a book launch event for my sons book “Lion of Singapore” last week. We had over 60 guests. The event was very well executed and serviced by Rishi and his team. The drinks and nibbles were very good and the whole event was classy.
Bella Luv Food
Lovely open space but everything was so dried. We had the platter to share and not sure if the skewers were a little bit burn but it's chewy and dried. The pizza was the best of them all but still very average. The price was also not cheap. Maybe more effort should be put on the taste or plate presenting to spark out and makes people want to come back.

I would like to up the ante' to 4 as I've been coming here for a long time now - and the food is very good. You pay for what you get in Auckland city. <br/>Dealing with the few problem areas for me; was a pizza awash with olive oil - once we had blotted it off it was fine - just put it down to a little exuberance in the kitchen ..<br/>But the addition of Aioli to a classic Margherita pizza makes me wonder why? The second time I ordered it - I asked for no Aioli and it was delicious.<br/><br/>The last thing was the Buffalo wings .... now I've eaten these for years in my travels and myself and my partner can eat very hot ,spicy food - but these were seriously challenging - so hot it literally burnt our mouths - couldn't tell if it was chilli or a cayenne over-kill - just couldn't eat it all. <br/>Had to have another beer. No I didn't complain as it seemed unusual - so I put it down to someone in the kitchen f**ked up with the seasoning - or someone putting their twist on it.<br/><br/>Those are the bleats - the menu in general is very good - we have eaten about 90% on offer and those are all the issues - so pretty damn good.<br/>My benchmark is Calamari and theirs is excellent - a simple, but equally difficult dish.<br/>The service is great and they don't ask "Hows your food" when you have a fork-full in your mouth<br/>they leave you to get on with it.<br/><br/>Just add a pepperoni pizza (please) - or at least revisit the Buffalo wings and you'll get a 4
Auckland Foodie
Pub with a very nice atmosphere. They do very yummy pizzas - I can really recommend the great stallion pizza. Nice to come there for a quick meal during lunch time on a Friday

Came here the other day and were served by a really nice guy who gave us all the specials and was very attentive.<br/><br/>The steak was good, could be better if the fat on the steak was cooked so that it was softer. Also a bernaise sauce or mushroom sauce with the steak would make the meal spot on.<br/><br/>Happy to come back again

Service: 4/5<br/>Food Quality: 4/5<br/>Food Quantity: 5/5<br/>Environment: 4/5 <br/>Lovely food, and great price for the area and quality. Service was not bad, but not the greatest either. Would recommend this place to many! Added bonus, they have a great party space available downstairs with indoor and out door areas. <br/>Would rate higher if there was some fresh air available! It was incredibly hot inside, some breeze, air conditioning  or fresh air would've been great!
Tony Ma
Extremely friendly and monies worth food.<br/><br/>Came here using the entertainment book. It’s amazing value for money. Perfect steak when you ask for medium rare it’s actually medium rare! Chips got a bit wet and soggy tho. <br/><br/>Very tasty ribs even the olds loved it. Awesome eggs too. <br/><br/>Nothing to complain about, super happy. 5 stars. <br/><br/>Service: 5/5<br/>Food Quality: 4/5<br/>Food Quantity: 5/5<br/>Environment: 4/5 (not enough breeze)<br/>Presentation: 4/5<br/>Price per person: $20

Standard pub fare, nothing special but I think the food prices are reasonable given the location. The margherita pizza with basil pesto and aoli is weird, I cannot support the ruining of such a perfect simple pizza.

The Horse and Trap. Ok so I will try to be completely unbiased about this place and the reason being is this has been my second home for the last 2 years. Of course I go else where but it's just up the road and thus my local. I also have many other bars near by with in the same distance, in fact some closer. But what makes me want to go the extra bit of distance is the warm welcome I always get. Let's rewind a little to the days when I was not a regular. <br/>Originally from England, we have a pub culture where after work you go to meet and unwind from the day with your besties and others. You chew the fat, sink a few beers and even if your unknown you would always be invited into the fold. By the end of the night you felt like you had known every one for ever. Of course the shots always helped. I left the Uk 9 Years ago. <br/>In this time I have been to many bars and restaurant, but let's not confuse the fact. I am are talking about a bar. I found from the day I walked in the, unbeknown to me at the time, made me feel so welcome it almost felt like home. Hence I'm still here. <br/>So back to today. This is still the same place as of 2 years ago in the sense of the welcome and the experience. The staff are very attentive to your needs and if they are not then just say. It is very quickly rectified. But if you don't have a great evening and feel welcome I would be surprised. <br/>Ok the food. Yes it's hearty food. It's pub food served as restaurant portions and charged according. There is a bit of adolescent confusion going on. The Horse and Trap still does not understand it's a bar. With that said the food is still very good and if you believe in quality rather than quantity (hello lone star) then you will definitely enjoy your food. And if you like pies and it's on the menu. Oh my. But don't put up with the chips. They will happily change it out for mash. The gravy that comes with it will wake your taste buds up. <br/>In the kitchen and headed by the owner I might add who is also a chef are some very excited people who just love to cook. They want you to enjoy the food as much as you want to. And will accommodate you as much as possible to ensure you have a great evening. <br/><br/>To summarise the Horse and Trap. It's not a restaurant but it serves good food. So long as you remember quality rather than quantity. If you want to feel welcome then you have come to the right place. <br/><br/>Disclaimer <br/>This is just an opinion and I won't be held accountable for your bill in any circumstances
Lim
Minimal food selection, small servings and seriously over priced. But disappointing really considering how dull the bar was that they feel they still need to charge these prices.<br/>

Back to this great venue again. My fifth visit. The food is expensive and there aint much of it but I keep coming back. Wanting to show this place off to a cousin from Whangarei and his wife. (Kerry and Sue) we ordered Steak and eggs for us two blokes (Of course) Sticky ribs for Madame with me and Pork Belly for Sue. The gals were totally rapt with their food, tender and delicious in both cases. The thing is Kerry and I are on the blokey side and there just wasnt enough food for us, Kerrys steak was thicker than mine and was rare bordering on blue and it was gristly. Mine was ok but Gristly as well. We will go back again but  I will stick to the Burgers  Steaks were $25 the girls meals about $20 The place was jumping (Quiz night) and service was great

What's happened H&T? We graced your fine surrounds for near on two years every Tuesday for what is (luckily, still) the best quiz night in Auckland, but after coming back to the city after a 6 month hiatus - you really have lost your Tuesday pizazz.<br/><br/>Two weeks on the trot your table service has been appalling. If your staff need to write things down when taking a full table order, then so be it - we will not be offended. What is more offensive is when nothing arrives for 30mins and we end up going to the bar anyway to make a purchase. Then suddenly a bill arrives charging us for the items that never actually made it to our table in the first place. It's not rocket science guys!<br/><br/>There are a couple of shining stars still left working there (thank goodness), but more often than not when we do have to order at the bar we are greeted by often cocky bar staff who really should learn to simply smile, apologise when the bar has made an error, and at least make some attempt not to backchat as we depart back to our table.<br/><br/>You guys used to rock. Our Tuesday's just aren't that much fun anymore, sorry.

Spent best part of Sunday afternoon/evening here earlier drinks on deck then migrating indoors for dinner.<br/>Roast lamb and fish and chips both good will be back again love the open fires too

Had dinner here before seeing a comedy show upstairs (clearly a versatile venue!). The waiter was quick to tell us about the specials, whilst limited in range, offered nice hearty options for a Saturday eve. There was ample seating to choose from and we managed to find a table with a big TV screen in view. Yes I know we were at a pub, but the music was a tad of the loud side. I had the good old fish and chips - the fish was beautifully battered and was accompanied by a salad but did not come with tartare sauce (a must!). The serving of chips was a bit small but aside from that the fish was tasty and went down well with a Monteiths Radler. I had a flat white to round of the meal but unfortunately it was on the weak side. In all a satisfactory pub meal experience and kudos to H&T for having a great room for the comedy too!

$11.00 for a pint of not particularly decent beer and when I complained that it was only 90% full (including the top) It was if I was in the wrong for complaining.<br/><br/>He still didn't top it up properly. Thankfully don't have to go there again.

Went with carnivore friends, and was delighted to find the lentil, pumpkin and cashew loaf, which was delicious. If this dish is fully vegan, Horse and Trap, say so in your menu! It was SOOO nice to have this great choice. Meat eaters very happy too. Very friendly service, and if is the 3rd menu in the last three months, keep it!

We did quiz night at the Horse and Trap last night, what a crack up! The quiz master was so witty and funny, we will be back for sure! <br/><br/>Food was also great along with service. I had the lamb burger from the specials board but wish I had ordered the ribs as they looked amazing and so too did the fish and chips.
Mrs T
I just had the tastiest sticky ribs I have ever had! Really needed to mention that so people will consider going out of their way for them. Keep up the great work chef!! <br/><br/>Staff that served us were friendly and fun, no orders screwed up and a great afternoon had by all. Cannot fault this local icon. Great pub food, atmosphere and service.

Ate there last night prior to the All Around Town gig at The Powerstation. $18 for four small quesadillas by themselves on a plate. Looked more like an entrée to me. Way overpriced . $9.50 for a tap beer didn't impress either
Glenn Town
Excellent pub<br/>Food and beers very good<br/>Nice atmosphere<br/>Hidden gem

We have frequented the Horse and Trap over the years and have had no reason to complain until our last visit.<br/>The service was so slow, and everything is overpriced, we had to wait half an hour for half a bowl of fries, that cost the best part of $10. We won't be back again.
Andrea McDonnell
I love the Horse and Trap. I used to go the pub quizz every Tuesday night and would often order meals before the quizz. Have never experienced anything other than good service and great meals there. Most recently had dinner there a couple of months ago with my husband before heading to the Powerstation for a gig. I thoroughly enjoyed the salt and pepper squid so much that we went back with our teenage sons for dinner a few weeks later. As expected, we all enjoyed our meals. Thanks Horse and Trap. We'll see you next time!

Love the H &amp; T. Great food, great beer, lovely atmosphere but agree that the staff have little interest in anything and are fairly robotic and blank - and I go there a lot...still, you don;t go for the staff chat everything else makes it worth it.
Kiwi Food Wonders
The Horse & Trap’s tagline is that they are a “stable of social relaxing”. When we visited on a busy Friday evening, this was certainly the case. It was pretty packed, with after-work suits, girls pre-loading for town, and an intriguing mix of middle-aged suburbanites.<br/><br/>The 100 year old building that the bar is housed in has a lovely feel to it; spread across 3 floors with plenty of private function rooms and outdoor areas, this venue can hold a crowd. As a Monteith’s bar, your tap selection also includes their range of ciders which makes for a refreshing summer tipple.<br/><br/>We were planning to just grab a drink or two, but looked over the menu & decided to stay. 1 of the 2 man-sized appetites I was dining with had a hankering for a burger, and the Horse & Trap Burger was calling his name. Served with pepper relish, battered onion rings & fries for $20, this was a man-sized burger. It even had the Kiwi touch with large slices of beetroot adorning the filling. The pattie appeared to be homemade, which is a big thumbs up for a busy pub kitchen. The chips were well cooked & seasoned, onion rings crispy & the relish was tasty. The only minor complaint was that the burger had been zealously seasoned – a touch too much cumin & coriander overpowered the other flavours. Otherwise the burger craving was well sated, and the request for extra aioli was happily met.<br/><br/>Our other dishes included the Pulled Pork Quesadilla with black beans, cheese, guacamole & salsa ($18). Again this was heartily-sized for a quesadilla. The filling was tasty, but the guacamole was more like pureed avocado as you can see from the photo. It was a little too smooth & runny to qualify as guacamole.<br/><br/>To read more, visit: http://kiwifoodwonders.com/2013/11/30/horse-trap-eden-terrace-auckland/
