Review Malt Public House - Auckland Central

Elena Khrustalyova
Delicious chicken wings. Crunchy, saucy, meaty and have a great deal on them every Friday. Delicious coffee too for those Sunday mornings. Pizza was so-so, crust and ingredients could be improved. Good choice of beers, nice staff and nice seating outside.

Attended a private function for my cousins' 40th in the courtyard area. It's a Great looking bar, funky toilets (weird to say I know, but they are 😆) comfortable seating areas, and the staff were really friendly and welcoming. The food we had was fresh and tasty. Ordered an assortment of cocktails. They were really good and not at all weak. Would definitely visit again when in the country.

Was a great place to go & relax, I had the burger special which was a chicken, bacon & Brie burger which came with a side of fries & aioli. They have an outdoor area that is dog friendly, & the staff were very efficient & courteous & my food arrived promptly. This is my girl waiting quietly for our food! We love our lunch dates!

Great 50c wings after work on Fridays! So good, and gluten-free friendly too.

I don't know what to say about this place, best steak meal in town, perfect bacon butties, Scottish music up loud. I wish I'd gone on a Saturday, not Sunday.
Kessia Stevenson
We were seated but not given menus right away another party came in after us and was seated and given menus before us. Which we found a little surprising. We got the special and it was very good. After the initial problem the person who served us was very attentive and professional.

Excellent friendly service. Very enjoyable dishes, even if some of them are a bit odd (for instance the cheese and chicken dip, it feels like it should be queso dip with corn chips and fried chicken pieces to dip in it, but it's cheese dip with shredded chicken mixed in) but they're all very enjoyable. Nightly specials are great value, for instance $15 for a steak main dish and a milkshake.

Excellent knowledgable staff, live music, lively atmosphere, food was tasty with good portions and reasonably priced ($18-27) and the cocktails were fantastic. Best of all it’s dog friendly! One of the staff brought over a dog bowl of water. A really kind touch.

I really can't believe how good is this place!! unbelievable, I have told all my friends about it. The dish in the picture is $15!!! Are you serious? The rate between quality and price extremely high. Delicious!! Congratulations guys!. They have every day of the week with a special, so Tuesday is steak day. A plus: the guy in the bar really hot and friendly 😂😂😂😂🔥. All the stuff friendly 😉😊

Wooow where to begin... Great music playing, your staff pleasant and professional. The food was fine done quality at a very reasonable price. My beer frosted glass and perfectly poured, scenic atmosphere almost as if your having dinner at a friend's house in the backyard. I enjoyed every minute I spent here! Thank you Malt Public House.

Didn't order food so can't rate that, but we loved this place. It was recommended as one of the top child-friendly bars, so we thought we'd give it a go and will definitely return. They also had a superb non-alc range.

Definitely my favorite eatery/watering hole in Grey Lynn. I live near Malt and really have only discovered it properly in the last 6 months, to which I have become a regular. Atmosphere is great, my favorite place to sit is out back on the deck. There are umbrellas for summer and heaters for winter and the gardens are really well cared for which definitely enhances the atmosphere. Food is to a good standard with the usual pub-type grub available. Think pizzas, burgers and sides but made to a standard you would expect in Grey Lynn. Service is pretty good to, the bar manager really knows her stuff and makes a decent bloody mary. Plenty going on from quiz nights to live music which isn't overwhelmingly loud. You can enjoy the music and have a conversation with someone at the same table - other Auckland pubs should take note! Overall, I feel privileged to be able to call this pub my local.

Delicious food and yummy cocktails. Even during busy times the service is excellent. Nice little spot with great atmosphere.

The atmosphere is great. The food is great. Variety on the menu. Cost was on point. Service was great. They have a feature every day of the week just to make it more interesting. Free WiFi.

Nice place for a casual mid-week lunch. Good atmosphere and service. Also some good mid-week specials. We will be going back.

Had a fantastic night at Oktoberfest, pity it only happens once a year. The crowd was having a great time and the musos made the night.

Fantastic burns supper tonight. The best food iv tasted since arriving in New Zealand and I will most definitely be back to try the regular menu. Staff were lovely and entertainment with the pipers were awesome. Thank you for such as amazing night

Met up with friends here tonight and brought along out 18 month and 3 year old girls - was presently surprised by colouring and sticker packs, and $10 kids menu with and ice cream! Kids healthy platter went down really well with our kids. Plenty of space too. Would recommended to other parents :)

Best Buffalo wings in Auckland, awesome staff, great food and drinks range.
Nicole Stevenson
Loved this little hidden gem !! Went last night for my mandatory Scottish Burns Supper! The decor was adorable! The food was amazing and the staff couldn't have been more helpful and welcoming! We shall definitely be back!
Clelia Elizabeth Opie
Really enjoyable Oktoberfest didint have the food but some pretzels would of been good great music nice crowd.

The venue is beautiful, such a nice setting. That's about all I can rate it on. The Buffalo wings were absolutely terrible. They were not Buffalo wings, tasted more like an extremely hot curry. Service lacked any actual service. What started as a nice night, ended with walking out half way feeling sick and angry. I have to acknowledge the young blonde waitress that checked on us and was a genuine sweet girl. Thank you.
Nicola Richards
Staff are always friendly, food is quick and good value for money. Nice ambience, good lighting and heating makes it feel very welcoming which is what I want from a local. Try the wings (there is also a wings happy hur on fridays); 2 for 1 pizzas in the weekend. Always something happening actually! Music, quiz nights, themed events. These guys make a real effort to provide the local community with a great place to feel at home in. Back courtyard is great in summer, also well heated in winter. Wine list offers large pours which is handy when you know you only have to walk home!

Great pub and friendly staff

$15 steak night with chips and salad ? SOLD! Was definitely satisfied which the steak special every Tuesday! <br/>Menu has a great variety of things to choose from pizzas kids meals and platters etc. Think there weekly specials are cool. Great range on beer/drinks! Thought the service could of been a tad bit more on to it in terms of cleaning and setting salt and pepper etc but other than that I’ll happily be back! 9/10 <br/>Also mushroom sauce oooo YUM!!! 10/10
Nekokoko
Such a shame cos the food and the feel of the place was really nice. The waiters moving around were friendly too, but everything was ruined by the rude bartender that day.<br/>Won’t be going back as there are plenty of other places that actually give quality customer service.

Have always wanted to check this place out. First time visiting & absolutely loved it. The ambience, the service & lastly the food. Steak special wow 😍 definitely walked out satisfied. Thank you for the experience! Will definitely be back!

I been here a few times over the years and i do like the set up of this restaurant. There is plenty of seat and good for groups.<br/><br/>The platter and pizza is good.<br/><br/>Overall is okay.
Rao
Really good steak at a good price! $15 Tuesdays, $25 regular! I tried it with the pepper corn sauce and found it a bit intense after a while so scraped it off. Will try mushroom next time.<br/>Good vibes, good service - my friends are regulars here
Julia Louise
Recently renovated and revamped - the new look is bright, airy, sunny and the place feels bigger. Really nice to sit out the back in the courtyard. Some gluten free options available (Cajun chicken burger with lettuce substituted for buns pictured).

AMAZING! Never been here before and traffic was bad so I stopped by. Staff where lovely, the blonde girl (who’s first day it was today) is one of the best servers I’ve ever experienced. The steak and Guinness pie... OMG! I’m in love with it! Interior, exterior and beer garden are open and welcoming. Will have to bring some friends on my next visit ❤️
Food For Thought
As a local we were looking forward to a revamped venue. We have been there on many occasions since it's been revamped. Every time we normally get food it's disappointing. I will never eat there again I'm over letting the guys know about the disappointing food. Like others have said these days the competition is fierce and burgers are simply not worth it<br/> I ordered the soithern Chicken burger seriously it was a dry ole thin as ya napkin piece, then filled with slaw and mayo that was so over powering! <br/>I do wish the people that invested in this place would eat here and see what they think! Surely they would agree and sort it out. Once again we will have a rubbish local pub only good for beer and chips! <br/>Oh also the toilets are filthy clean the vents!

I was really excited to go to Malt Bar and heard great things about the wings. Interior was lovely and staff friendly. Food was a big let down though. I ordered the fish burger ($18) and my partner ordered the chicken burger ($18). It was a busy night so there was a long wait but we didn't mind. Both burgers came with shoe string fries which was good. My partner said his chicken burger was "average" and "edible", so better than the fish burger I had. What really let me down was there was absolutely no flavour at all in this burger. The fish portions were small, dry, over cooked and lacked flavour. It is also difficult to eat the burger with fish portions like this. It was not the kind of burger you expect to get for $18 - I can get a mind blowing pork belly burger from Rad for that price, or a great fish burger from Corner Burger much cheaper, or Burger Burger. With so many great competitors you can't get away with bad burgers like this these days. I asked for cheese and I'm clueless why they put it on top of the fish instead of under, and could have melted it or done something better. Even the cheese didn't add much flavour. Desperately needs seasoning, better sauces and some flavour. This food completely lacks inspiration and flair which is what is sad. Would maybe return to try the wings but would not order burgers again.

Partner has been going on and on about visiting Malt. Went around 4pm on the Sunday of Waitangi weekend. Happy hour was on so can't complain. The pulled pork poutine was delicious but lacked gravy as opposed to the last visit. The buffalo wings are tasty but a little too much sour to them. This was off putting. Saving grace was the sauce. Overall, nice and relaxed deck atmosphere, wonderful live music.

50c WINGS!!! Properly spiced Buffalo wings (nibbles, as they would be called here) took me right back home. so yum and packing a punch with the vinegar base. Perfect match with the blue cheese sauce (also like they are Stateside) and an Emmerson's to wash it down. Delightful for a session after work.
Miss Sassy
I like the revamp with the wood and industrial light fixtures. It's more light and spacious. Popped in for a beer and some small plates. The prawns with the popcorn was interesting however it worked. The fries were good too. They had a good playlist on, fitting for a low key weekend arvo
Lynn
This place is revolting. The drinks and food are disappointing and the service is appalling. The wood finish makes the sound far too noisy. Food is inedible and the staff are uninterested

Malt has always been a great local pub to catch up with mates at over a cold beer. My partner and I weren't sure what the long awaited renovations would bring but couldn't be happier. Spacious yet cozy with nice indoor/ outdoor flow to a beautiful deck that is sure to pack out in summer.<br/><br/>Huge improvements on the menu! Happy faces all round when we have dined here with friends.<br/><br/>My partner's favourite would have to be the pies. Home-style served on a mound of mash, cabbage and gravy! Don't forget the buffalo wings with blue cheese sauce either!<br/><br/>I'm a vegetarian myself and it's nice not having to eat the same thing every time I go out. Between the appetizers, mains and sides there's plenty of tasty options! My go-to is the veggie burger. Japanese style with panko crumbed portobello and pickled ginger, a great take on a pub classic! Love the polenta chips too which are served with a dipping sauce that changes regularly.<br/><br/>As the menu always has a few new surprises on it each time we pop in, who knows what the favourites will be next week!<br/><br/>Always get great service when we stop in whether its for a meal or a quick drink.. or two.. or three..<br/><br/>So big thanks to the Malt team for being pretty damn cool!
Chris Thompson
The renovation has not been kind. Now soulless and boomy the space is not great. The beers are pseudo craft macs and emersons and the food is greasy and dull - but priced high. The one highlight was the fish which was solid in size and cooked to perfection. Overall I was sad that what could have been great was aiming low / and succeeding.

In a word: FANTASTIC!<br/><br/>It's been a while since I have been able to wet my whistle and grace the Grey Lynn "go to" public house with my presence, but my gosh was it worth it! <br/><br/>The drinks:<br/>Now at first glance you may think "oh my, this place is a bit more expensive than your average bar" stop right there! There's a reason for this. Firstly you can tell that the lines are cleaned regularly, so your pint has its full natural flavour, no odd tasting artifacts there. After discussing with staff how nice their beer tasted in comparison to other places, my assumptions were correct. <br/>The food:<br/>I want to eat it all! I can't speak highly enough. Food was delivered efficiently, hot and with a smile. But if you want something to graze, go for those hot wings! THE BEST WINGS IN AUCKLAND! Also fridays they have 50 cent wings from 5pm-7pm. <br/><br/>I could go on and on, but seriously, Malt Public house will be my go to gaff from here on.

The recent fit out of Malt looks great!! We went for breakfast, sadly were the only customers the entire time. Food was tasty and well presented. Would be great if the breakfast menu had a few more options/add in options.

Went to Malt today with a group of around 30. The inside bar isn't the biggest though it has a well sized outdoor area with not only gas heaters, but little blankets. Yes, Malt has little blankets ready for you to use while in the outdoor area!!!<br/><br/>The food was more than decent and relatively speedy considering the number of people ordering. Everything was smooth and easy to nake a good pleasurable social experience.<br/><br/>My only gripe was with one of the waitresses who wasn't the greatest with English. We had a little drama ordering food and got no water by default for being customers though she was still kind and attentive.<br/><br/>Had there not have been English issues, I would have given Malt a 4.5 though have to give it a 4. It's a very decent location. I recommend Malt.

Popped in here on the spur of the moment and I'm so glad I've found this place! I was blown away by their eye fillet, perfectly cooked medium rare - honestly better than all other streak places I've been to in Auckland. Handcut Agria fries perfectly cooked and seasoned, as was the seasonal vegetables. Hands down the best evening meal I've had out in ages and there will be many repeat visits.
Katherine Simpson
Great burger. Perfectly cooked meat patty, fresh bun and delicious chips. Love that the meals are dependable and tasty. The beer battered fries are the best

I came here with my partner for a quick lunch and wasn't disappointed. The friendly attentive staff, the food was great (Chicken Burger & damn good spicy wings - extra hot!)<br/>Great selection of beers, plenty of craft ones to chose from too and all priced reasonably. Cheers
Duane Sommerville
Great range of affordable meals.  The beer battered fries are the best fries I've ever eaten!!!  Comfortable setting, with friendly, approachable staff.  Loyalty programme seems quite good as well.

I previously had a bad experience with Malt's service (1-2yrs ago), but have recently started going back. I've been 3 times over the last month, ordering their BLT with fries on the side - delicious! The service has been great - and Avocado has been added to my BLT at my request :)  Someone else at my table asked for some aioli for their fries - it was no trouble. I also appreciate chilled water and glasses being brought to the table without having to ask. Really pleased with my dining experiences! It's become one of our go-to places for lunch in Grey/West Lynn.

Great burgers at a reasonable price. The food at this bar is quite good but the service is far from being even average. I just hope I visited Malt Bar on a bad day for the staff, but there seem to be as well no management to look after bartender/waiter`s mistakes. I will probably go again for the awesome chicken burger, but not for the plastic bottle`s coke with no ice.<br/><br/>*On the last 2 visits to Malt Bar I was very lucky and a wonderful waitress looked after my table. Service was fantastic and she made our night way better. It's time to change my rating from 3.5 to 4.0. You're heading on the right direction!

We had dinner here last month on a Friday evening.  It was super early as we needed to be somewhere else by 6.30pm.  Just as well, really as the place really filled up during the time we were there, and lots of people were tableless, and waiting at the bar.  The staff were all extremely friendly and welcoming, and generally great at what they do.  We both ordered the Scotch Fillet, medium rare with the green peppercorn sauce and handcut fries - After a short wait our meals arrived, nicely presented and very generous serves.  The steak was perfectly cooked and just like I love it, slightly crunchy char on the outside and truly pink and succulent on the inside.  I can honestly say they were the best steaks we'd had in ages - and at $26 this is steal.  No room for afters, but we fitted a few pints of Montieth's Black in and around the food... entire bill was under $70, that's got to make you smile.

Ok - I admit I should have done my homework. We visited the Malt on a busy Saturday night when rugby was on. However, we did select this restaurant as it appeared in the fine dinning section of the Entertainment Book - this creates a certain expectation before your arrival. It was not fine dining - with the noise of the bar, TV's showing rugby (and I enjoy sport) blaring away, sitting at a table that was unstable and rocked with every movement (actually thought it at risk of collapsing), sitting in the walkway between the bar and outside sports area etc. At one point we had to ask the waitress to speak up as we couldn't hear her and I came home smelling like a cigarette. BUT, the staff were friendly, attentive and cared for our needs. The food very tasty (I had the soup which was a tasty meal on its own - as well as the pie - tasty and I couldn't finish it as I was so full) and well priced. In summary - if you want a pub meal - worth a visit - been to far worse!! If you want a quiet meal with friends and a chat I strongly suggest you look elsewhere.

We went here with a deal, when we sat down the waitress came and asked us three times within 10 minutes, if we were ready to order , then after that I had to go find her to tell her we were ready. She wasn't busy, just inattentive, there were 4 tables occupied that day. We had to ask for the table to be wiped clean, so the waitress wiped the splatter, but not the whole table with a dry cloth, it made us feel the table wasn't clean. <br/>We had tapas, pork ribs, meatballs, squid. Very disappointing. The ribs were just pressure cooked without marinade then smothered in BBQ sauce, they were white not caramelised or grilled smothered with sauce that was too sweet, we had to scrape some of it off, then the meatballs were warm not hot covered in cold sauce, so it made for a funny feel to the dish, was it supposed to a hot dish or a cold dish? It would have been better hot. The squid, was oily, a sign the temperature of the fryer was not hot enough.<br/>We didn't really enjoy the meal or the service. Tapas should be small dishes of gorgeousness, tasty and rich, balanced in flavour and constructed with care. Perhaps we should have ordered meals, but how do you know that they would have been better? And tapas are supposed to be as good as meals, not a consolation prize. These were not. Sorry, we won't be coming back.

Malt hosted a Xmas do for me on the 13th - we had 48 people in a Hawaiian themed BBQ out on the deck and it was excellent. People commented on the quality and variety of the food, the staff were very helpful, they supplied a blue cocktail for everyone at our request and made everything really simple so the evening could flow. I would thoroughly recommend it as a venue for a group function

had not heard of this place but it was on grab a deal and i wanted to go somewhere different - its lovely and we will defiantly be back - we sat in the courtyard and although we were early 12 o'clock for lunch there was only us there but the staff were friendly and my partner had ribs which were huge portion so he was happy and i had the chicken sand which with chips again huge portions - we will be defiantly back maybe over a weekend to check out the atmosphere and will be recommending our friends to go thanks for a lovely lunch

I been to Malt Bar twice both times the meals were good and the Monteiths Beer on tap also a hit. One thing though is that both times the staff serving our tables were really friendly but when we enter and paid the manager himself wasn't so friendly... other than that this is a great local and I would come back again and again.

This was a seriously good 'Black &amp; Beef' pie I had here today for lunch. It cost me $14, and was very full of flavour and extremely filling. I think this pie is pretty healthy as far as pies go too, cuz it only had a puff pastry lid, (not bottom or sides), and the actual soft melt-in-your mouth beef was delicious in a creamy-textured brown sauce made with Monteith's black ale, with the odd mushroom here and there. It was really nice. The beer battered fries here are crunchy and perfect. Plus there was a really tasty dressing on the little green leaf salad that came with it.<br/><br/>A homely delicious meal that I thought was great value in a comfortable old-school pub atmosphere.

Went here for pizza with my partner and my son. We ordered one large pizza and a kids pizza. Both pizzas arrived and the large one was badly burnt round the edges. The kids pizza wasn't even cooked. It should have never been served. It was sent back. Then there was the waitress who kept playing with her hair, touching her face while handling plates of food. This would have to be the worst dinning experience we have had. My son will never eat there again. I will not be in a hurry to return. This restaurant badly needs to take a look at their food standards also their staff training. A very unpleasant evening.
Tessa
We went to Malt last night... Waitress was lovely, and funny, outdoor area was great, but we were not close to the smoking part which may have helped.<br/><br/>Service was a bit slow / hard to find, as there was only 2 staff working and they were busy for 2 people.<br/><br/>Booze was good, your average price, good Pinot Selection and decent value on beer jugs.<br/><br/>Pizza's were pretty boring, and ours needed an extra minute to avoid the center of the base going soggy.<br/><br/>Chips - Best ever in the world!!! Ever<br/><br/>I would go back for drinks and snacks and a tonne of chips, easy!
Kelly Wu
Went there for lunch. Like the atmosphere, and also the food was well prepare although we waited for 20 minutes to get the brunch on the table. Overall satisfied with the level of service and the quality of food.
Philip
The food was nice. Typical pub meals, but the dinner portions were on the small side compared to other pubs.<br/>The service was efficient.<br/>The environment is nice. A good, cosy, pub atmosphere with plenty of character.<br/>Kudos for offering the deal voucher promotion.<br/><br/>Overall a satisfying, pleasant night out.
Marc
I love going to Malt, the $29 tripple platter is delicious and great value. The chef cooks these dishes to perfection, and they are very well presented. The service is fast and the ambience is fine. A down to earth chic place that I really enjoy eating at :)
Katie Wallace
i am regular there, strange thing is they have different chef each day.<br/>sometimes, the food is too much sodium which none of my friend couldn't eat. but they usually make amazing $10 lunch meals i like their beer beef pie with chips! it's soo fresh and chips are really crispy too. they also offer soup, thai beef/ tuna wraps with salad.

if there is one place to fall back on when you have no where else to be, The Malt is a good place to go. Great staff, great food, great service, great place to relax and eat after a long week...
Pete
Good night out here, sat down with a couple of friends and ate some good bar food. Were supposed to go out later for dinner in Ponsonby but just stayed on in there and ordered more.

Have had a great steak meal twice in a week as the food was so delicious. Nestar the chef is the best!
