Review The Good Home Mt Eden - Auckland Central

The staff was exceptionally nice here. Quick service and very attentive. We only ordered snacks so pretty basic fries and chicken bites. But I would still suggest a stop in.

Place has a good vibe with wonderful background music. Several TV’s are strategically placed so that everyone can access. Excellent service with a smile and great food.

We held our engagement party here with 20 guests and it couldn't have been better. The staff were wonderful, attentive and helpful while leaving us to enjoy ourselves sufficiently. It really took the stress out of hosting for me and meant I could relax and spend time with loved ones. The food was lovely by all accounts and we had our own space in the whiskey room which was perfect. The decor still has character despite being part of a chain, and the staff set the room up to include kids as requested in advance, with menus, crayons and coloring in pages. Would definitely return.

Wasn't a great start after twice, the staff failed to come and sort us out with drinks and food menus and then, to take our orders. Finally managed to get another guy to get us sorted and it was plain sailing from there on in. Food was both plentiful and flavourful. Nice to see a side salad with some thought going into it and some alternative and additional ingredients. Steak was perfectly cooked, as was the fish and the staff, after the first hiccup, were attentive without being overbearing. Great place for a nice big feed, plenty of seating etc and without music deafening you.

Had to kill some time waiting for a mate to finish work. It was a Tuesday around 3pm so very quiet, and it was raining. But it has a nice atmosphere and the service was good and it seems like a good spot for a few drinks after work or if you are around that way. I can't comment on the food. Plenty of parking nearby. I'll certainly add it to my list of spots worth going back to.

Food and service was awesome. I had one of the best cooked restaurant bought steaks here, bang on medium rare.👍 Only complaint was its too hard to have a conversation. Music was a bit loud because we were seated right under one of the speakers. Made it harder for someone who is partially deaf to hear what my friends were saying.

Lovely gastro pub! 🍺🍔 A bit upmarket in prices but worth it for the service, range and menu. Loads of space - so many little corners and side areas to tuck away to. A conversationalists pub with plenty of parking. There are at least two bars, and a seperate family/kids room with proper tables for the adults and play areas for the wee ones (🙏thank you from those of us without kids who have sensory issues around screams/squeals🙃). The people behind the bar are knowledgeable, warm yet professional and the decor is really fun🍍. There are indoor and outdoor areas and even a fireplace. It’s the kinda spot to go with a group for a lovely afternoon of food and drink 🧐😁

What an outstanding lunch I had here! Pan fried snapper, gluten free and absolutely delicious! Food is a little pricey but it's well worth it! Staff were friendly, and helpful without being intrusive on our family get together.

Classic local sports bar. I have to say, they really load up their nachos and fries. Would recommend sharing just the one with a friend! Basic beers on tap. Good vibes.

Met up with ex work colleagues. We got there early, it does get busy & can be noisy. Food was v good 👍🏻

Came here for lunch with a collegue. The staff working here were super friendly, helpful and just had overall great service. The portions of the food are quite generous too! Just had a double cheeseburger and could hardly get to the coleslaw and chips it was served with! So definitely value for money here. Will hopefully be back on another lunch break! Also its a plus that in such a busy area they have off road parking.

Outstanding service. We asked for our food quickly, as we were heading off to Eden Park for kick off. Nicely cooked chicken burgers arrived in just the time it would have taken to cook them. Thanks to the staff.

15th November 2023 @ 2000. As soon as you step foot inside The Good Home in Mt Eden it definitely lived up to the name THE GOOD HOME. Warmth homely welcome as we were greeted by bar male staff name Sam, he smiled and asked how we both are and how can be of help, once we told him of our reservations he was quick to direct us to our table booked and recommended selections of drinks while we wait. Once we seated we were greeted by the most amazing human of a female her name is Renee, shes exceptional very attentive and my partner and I can sense how genuine she really is, it wasnt she was just doing her job but as a person she was very kind, helpful and caring. Thank you very much Renee we wish you the best in your future. So thank you very much The Good Home, foods, services, atmosphere top notch and we will definitly come back and bringing more friends.

The atmosphere was lovely and the vibe was nice!! Had the fish and chips and it was delicious🤩the batter was a bit too oily for my liking but the flavours were there! Both the burgers my friends had was chicken and pork and they enjoyed it but thought could do with a little bit more flavour with the burger! Staff was lovely and very attentive!!

3.5/5 Rating
Great menu for sharing. They have a lot of sharing plates and sharing platters to choose from.

The platters are decent with ample sauces to go with the food. We ordered a mixed seafood and meat platter. Everything that was deep fried was crispy and crunchy.

Service was awesome. Food was amazing, portions were bigger than I expected. Worth the money definitely. Especially the Beef Wellington, Pork Belly, Tomahawk Steak, Ravioli and Pappardelle pasta?..... They were all so good! Would of course go back.

5/5 Taste
4/5 Display
5/5 Quantity
3/5 Customer Service

Amazing Bar in Mt Eden!

Came here for Monday Ribs, ordered 1kg ribs on chips and coleslaw and I didnt get 1kg of ribs i feel like I got hammered with 10kg of em. I’m a big eater, normally when I go out and eat I can easily do 2 main dishes but the ribs at this place made me really really full. And they were bloody delicious too!

Big thumbs up for their great work. (Slow service tho)

Called in here as NZ Falcons & Parliament boys were having an after match drink n nibbles, nice large venue & yummy kumara chips, matches, onion rings, great place for a group thing. Saturday 24 August 2019.

Often come here with one of my reps for a catch up great atmosphere and meals are always quick and delicious. Disappointing they no longer have the pork bites though due to a new chef they were the best!

Situated down the road from a church & behind a secondary school, The Good Home is an awesome place to set an example for the surrounding tenants by getting smashed, stumbling the streets scanning every bloody Prius in the area for your Uber ride home haha. The Good Home is reminiscent of a good old-school pub, there's a nice homely feel to it and I think the fire place and lounge suite accentuates this feeling more than anything....that & the fact that it kinda looks like an old estate house from the outside too. I do enjoy the open plan decor, and relish in the fact they use a bright red staircase & various antique-style mirrors as a backdrop for the bar, super artistic! The service has always been great here as well the bar bites. I've never actually sat down & had a proper meal before, however the menu does intrigue me....

Very relaxed atmosphere. Nice and cosy and clean.
Very warm inside.
The service is great
Food is great and the beer is fresh.
Nice place to chill out and rewind.

Great customer service, children-friendly but the food was just okay. We tried the Salt & Pepper salad, Prime Time burger and Kid’s Fish and Chips. The chips for both meals were undercooked. The burger and squid were a little bland. Good dining experience as children were happy with the space and toys while waiting for food.

Had lunch here with the team today, ordered the ribs , they were awesome, just a few pieces were supper tough & chewy otherwise the rest were super good I asked the waitress for some tomato sauce it never arrived I just noticed it didn’t after I finished my meal , rest of the team enjoyed there meals , we will definitely be back thanks..

If you wanna go to a good pub, go here! The staff is super friendly and the atmosphere is superb. I especially enjoy sitting outside on a sunny day. The food is great for pub food and there is a huge variety of drinks to choose from

Had our office gathering here - really great and fantastic place to spend sunny and warm day during spring in their outdoor spot.. they have great various beer and cocktail and also fabulous food.. we ordered eden park steak and it’s super yummy, beef pie, seafood trio and many more for each of us..
Tan.ned
Eh. The food was average. The pork was stringy, but the potato gratin was good. The seafood Trio needs a bit more seasoning. The Fish was also dry. The service was sooo slow. And to top it all off, they charged us $9 for the "trio" icecream. Will not be coming back here again.

Visited this pub for first time with a friend. We were having lunch but weren’t too hungry so opted for the bar snacks. My friend ordered the wedges and I ordered the nachos both HUGE portions - too much food for us!

I've been visiting this place consistently for the past couple of months.

First off, the actual place is nice, open, big and staff is super friendly.
Prices are about average for the service.

A couple of personal favorites:
* Steak guiness & vegetable pie with a choice of [mashed potatoes, chips or salad]: very nice texture and flavor, well presented, right portion size (for me at least)* Twice cooked pork belly: soft, well cooked, neatly presented.* Sticky bbq pork rack of ribs: again, well executed and as with everything in here I've tried so far, well presented and served.
Now the thing I don't like: they serve some things that come sizzling and smoking and it makes a mess all over the place, not a big fan of it really.

Overall a good place, it won't blow your mind, but it will be consistent, and it's a great place to meet with some friends or go with family.

The staff are super friendly! Food is awesome considering it’s pub grub. I have not had a bad meal from here.
Love this place, only downside is that they don’t serve food a little later, only bar snacks.
Also, should start doing a classic Sunday roast on Sundays! I would be there every Sunday for that!

It really lives up to its name! The Good Home felt like a cozy home you were at having dinner with friends. However, none of you have to cook and the waitstaff bring your drinks! Absolutely loved it.

Came in on a Thursday afternoon, wasn't too busy but had a few guests sitting outside with nibbles.

Service was good, staff were friendly and atmosphere was great. I ordered the twice cooked pork and a side of onion rings, but once I had received my meal the pork was tough to cut through and rubbery, the onion rings were tasty but had a bunch of oil in the serving bowl. I wouldn't recommend eating either of these and won't return here but will always stay loyal to the Onehunga branch as they know what good food should taste like.
Julia Louise
Really nice pub food, reasonably priced. Good gluten free options - try the prawns gluten free, so yum! A little trickier for vegetarians, not as many options, they have a vegetarian grill though. Great live music and a relaxed, homely vibe.
Went in for lunch with family and dog taking table outside. First “told”not allowed inside with dog. Had no intention to which is why we were sitting outside in first place. Then asked for credit card “so we didn’t leave without paying”. Then whilst we were actually eating asked to go up and pay. Poor customer service all round. Food at least was ok.

The place is nicely decorated and has a nice inside and outside area. Staff is very friendly and greeted us immediately. Ordered chicken burger and salmon bene, it's on bagels instead of muffins which is quite nice for a change. Also got iced coffee and long black. The chicken burger was massive and had decent amount of wedges with it too! Will definitely come back during summer to get a cool drink.

Went for an impromptu dinner, the place was lovely the girls working were really nice and they checked on us often we came in just before the 7pm on a friday and was told we can take any table we wanted.the place was nicely decorated and the food was good and filling, I suggest not to bother ordering something you think may be small because it's a fancy pub style meal good for sharing!

We attended an engagement party there and to begin with our service was a little "slow" but they soon caught up and we had a rocking good time with two live bands a barrel of Guiness and fun staff that had good banter, even the guy from Essex;-)
I was able to leave my car in the car park by arrangement a d pick up the next day. Awesome pub grub a d they do some more fancy delicacies as well great fun loved it!

Went to dinner with the family here on a random Wednesday night. I had the steak and Guiness pie which came entirely in pastry as opposed to in a bowl as expected. Serving size was very reasonable but it was a relatively average meal and came with veges which just seemed like frozen veges. My partner ordered the pasta without the optional chicken as she is veegtarian but to turned up with chicken in it. They were very good at replacing this meal quickly and apologised. The burgers were okay, but potentially a little dry and nothing spectacular. Overall a fine meal, but really not particularly special at all.

Terrible food and lapses in service.

Good Home has a huge menu, which looks promising at first glance. But the food that comes out is just poor.

We ordered the lamb salad (so drenched in oil I had to wipe my chin after each bite, a minuscule amount of goats feta, over cooked lamb), lamb rack (the smallest rack of lamb I have ever seen, grey looking green beans, one rubbery portobello and flavourless roast potatoes), and t bone steak (brown peppercorn sauce??, half a sad looking raw tomato, orange coloured onion rings, also drenched in oil).

The only consolation was that the garlic bread was delicious and the chips were at least not out of a frozen packet.

We had to ask 3 times for water.

Would not return.

On first look, this saloon-like place looks like out of a western movie and does have that feel once you set foot inside thru the main (swing) door, nice and spacious too..
Use to be the Normandy or Normanby Hotel and renovated to The Good Home. Came here for a gathering and as I/we were too busy partying da nite, never got the chance to try out their grub but looks like yer typical pub meals like fish/chips, grills, finger snacks etc. might try the food later, the staff there are quite friendly/approachable too.
Site also reminds me of those smokey public bars of my old school days catering for all you rugby, racing and beer fans, also i like to come here to watch free live sports as i not have sky TV.

Pretty average service was ok,waited 45mins for a burger and fish and burger wasn't made with love it's like it was just slop together I had the vege burger it was so tasteless and bland was priced quite reasonable maybe have a word to your chefs they need to pay more attention to food

Came by for a Christmas party. The place was refurbished and looked really nice and spacious, particularly the covered outdoor area covered with turf and couches. There wasn't much snacks left so I ordered a mixed grill for dinner. Most of the items were good particularly the onion rings since the batter was so crispy. The ribs however were a different story. It was dry and tasted of water. It was a bit of a let down since the rest of the dish was nice.

A Terrible Meal. We had a mixture meals:

2 x Scallops and Prawns, one of the scallop meals, the scallops were not cooked and had to sent back, prawns were ok, but had that burnt smell.

The other scallop prawn dish had under cooked prawns which felt slimy on the tongue, so were sent back for cooking...

The Chicken Pie which was tasty except the gravy had way too much salt, almost as if they had salted it twice and I had to scrape it off the pie, also very sparse veges, see the photo.

The Snapper meal, the verdict was small serving of snapper, not very tasty, just poached with mussels that were rubbery and tasteless, as if cooked in water with no flavourings. A very disappointing meal.

The wait staff started with a grumpy girl who came as soon as we sat down and asked for our drinks order, we told her give us 5 minutes, she returned and when we hadn't decided, she walked off seemingly annoyed.

Following that she never came back and other wait staff had to serve us, when we required service we had to wave or go up to the bar, to request our finger bowl etc.

It was a Sunday Evening, not very busy and the wait for the meal was quite long.

Very disappointing experience and meals. It seems like the Chef wasn't working that night and a Junior Chef was instead.

They did remove the charge for one of the scallop meals which was appreciated.

Nice premises. Branding a little confusing as it looks like a real estate agency though. Good prices and portion size. Food quality ok. Steak over cooked for sandwich though. No table service despite not being busy, which was odd. Had to find own menu then order from bar. Credit card usually taken with order which seems a little distrusting.
Penelope Chua
Steak was good, peppercorn sauce too heavy on the peppercorns. Calamari was cooked right, but the aoli can be better. Chicken pie was good, garlic bread was a bit dry. Overall, pub fare was okay, ambience was good.

You can't really beat pub grub on a Sunday.

Blessed with some of the finest weather we've had , Auckland showed up but did The Good Home?

Spacious and vast, The Good Home was bustling as we entered. Our waiter was nice and greeted us with a smile before recommending that we take a seat next to the outdoor section as the glares of the sun were quite intense.

Once seated, we ordered. As a pub, the options are fairly standard so no surprises here but again the waiter was attentive and kept us hydrated during our stay. We ordered the ribs, classic beef burger, fish burger, seafood chowder, Thai salad, and a roast lamb.

Being a busy day, we were expecting a wait but was surprised to receive our food in around 10-15 minutes.

The joy of pub food has always been the quantity and its consistent yet not overly amazing taste. Overall our group agreed it was a great pub meal. The burgers were well cooked and put together, the roast lamb had a strong flavour, and the BBQ sauce in conjunction was incredibly satisfying. We had way too much ribs as the large option was quite a rack, although the sauce wasn't as nice as the other meals.

Only disappointing note was that the seafood chowder was hinging on the extreme end for its saltiness and the slice of bread that accompanied the soup was disappointingly dry.

However a great experience nonetheless.

Showstopper: Roast Lamb and Burgers.

Overall Grade: B+

Great service and food. Love the decor and staff uniforms.
Big portions too.
Live band on Friday & Saturday night is a great bonus.
Clean & tidy

Not a bad place for a pub meal. The Good Home is the newly renovated the Normandy pub.

The decor of the place is similar to the old place. The food portions are huge and they are well priced. The service can be better, but they were attentive and helpful. The food took more than 30 minutes tonight, which I thought was a little long. Given that it was quite a busy night, lucky we had the all black vs the wallabies to distract us.

We had the fish and chips, the grill and the poached snapper. They were pretty nice solid meals. Im keen to try their pies, but perhaps i will come for a quiet mid-week dinner instead.

Once a child/grandchild/nephew comes into a family, the choice of eating out suddenly becomes restricted. No to small dingy noodle houses. No to any place that doesn’t embrace the whole list of food allergies. I’ve visited A Good Home in Birkenhead before and the decor was something that set it apart from the usual bar/restaurant.
Leanne Schou
Oh thank GOD the Normandy has been totally renovated.. what a great transformation. New wait staff need a bit of time/confidence to settle in I think but food and drink well priced and will be popular over summer. Go, well worth seeing the changes and enjoying a cold one on the deck.

Old Normanby hotel pub and been totally renovated! Nice place very warm
And inviting and super packed on a Friday night. Menu was your average pub meals. The thing I liked the most was the ambiance as it was very cosy and location (easy parking a bonus)!
