Review The Gyoza Bar - Auckland Central

Amy Rosvally
We came for one of their special events and had a blast! Such a cute space with lovely staff. The food and drinks were delicious! Our menu was special because of the event but given we ate a sampling of everything on that menu, I have no doubts their standard menu is equally as tasty! We will be back!

The food was delicious! It is also affordable. It was my first time coming at this restaurant; it looks simple yet fancy at the same time. Must try is their Ginza Combo. My friends and I thought that the combo will not be enough but they prepare enough servings so no need to order for more - unless if you're really keen to try their other food. I also recommend their fried eggplant with sweet sauce. I will definitely go back to this restaurant. Great place to eat and hangout on a Friday night.

Service was top class! Food was delicious. A must try! The wagyu beef is highly recommended along with the gyoza and kimchi! A staff named Mayuka's service made us feel at home! Went there 2 nights straight!

This place was so amazing we went back twice within 4 days! The pork and vegetable Gyoza was amazing. Service was great and drink menu offered liter cocktails. Highly recommended

Bustling Ponsonby gyoza eatery 🥟 Traditionally inspired decor, menu and layout. Kind staff and good service - beer on tap and some delicious Nippon tapas 🎌 Lovely spot to share some plates, saki and chats 🍶🍤🍻 There is a bit of a fly problem in summer - bothersome to the extreme - and the service can be intermittent at times due to pace (food coming when ready but without warning of this). All round I thoroughly recommend a visit. Those dumpling oh mhy GHOD 🫠

Exceptionally friendly staff, beautifully decorated (even the bathroom looks good) and the food is excellent; at least the dumplings are. I tried pan fried, steamed, boiled and even some in a thick soup - all of them were delicious. Bonus: prices are very reasonable for both food and drinks.

Great food, loved the beef tataki and the dumplings comes with sauces that are different to the ones that normally served with gyoza. Big list of Japanese whisky too, so if that's your thing you are in luck!!

Everything about this restaurant is perfect- the atmosphere is great for any occasion, the service was top tier, and every dish was bursting with fresh flavour. It was date night so we opted for the Ginza for 2, added a jug of Asahi and were set for the entire evening. Each plate was perfectly portioned and exploding with a variety of tastes as we worked our way through the tapas selection. We experienced a dozen different items including delicious salmon, perfectly prepared wagyu beef and traditional teriyaki chicken. The meal was finished with two whiskeys (included in the Ginza package) which was ideal to relax and unwind before wrapping up the night. Will be returning regularly.

They do the best Karaage Chicken I have ever had (and I'm a big Karaage fan). They also do a stir fried broccoli dish which absolutely knocks my socks off.

The food is really good. Its not just gyoza here. The gyoza is amazing but we also ordered a variety of other food. The spicy chicken is yummy. The bao burger is good and fluffy. The agedashi tofu can be crisper. But overall very good

Great staff, fast service, nice friendly place. The dumplings were delicious. We wondered if they forgot the salt off all the other food, it was very bland and we didn’t love it. Mains were more like an entree also, we went and found more food elsewhere after our meal as we weren’t full.

Wow! What a lovely little gem! We felt like we were in Tokyo again. Service was outstanding and the gyoza were the perfect mix of crispy pastry and moist tender filling. We had the beef and pork, plus cheese gyoza.. deeeeelicious! We also had beef tataki, katsu prawns, takoyaki and chicken karaage. Everything was fabulous 🥰

Lovely.
We were craving some drinks and casual Japanese on a warm Auckland evening, and The Gyoza Bar did not disappoint.

The karaage chicken pieces were tender and crisp at the same time, the takoyaki beautifully presented and on par with the any offerings from Kyoto food stalls (this is intended purely as a compliment to casual Japanese food), and the gyoza...
We started with the beef and pork, and went for the cheese gyoza for seconds. The pastry was fried to perfection, but not so to overpower the filling. The filling juicy and tender. The cheese gyoza were incredibly smooth and rich. It's safe to sum up that we left very satisfied.

The highlight of the evening was the customer service, attentive and very friendly, if a little slow (though in their defence only two members of staff were on, on a busy evening).
Drinks-wise we went for the plum wine and sake tasting flights, curated by the bar manager. Highly recommend the unfiltered sake and the citrus plum wine.

Did not stay for dessert, but we can definitely see ourselves returning to The Gyoza Bar for more.

Yummy and really friendly service! Good for a quick late evening snack, the cheese gyoza is most unusual but enjoyable if you are down for something different. Side dishes are over priced but at least they are generous with servings. We sat outside in the sun, but inside looks like good bar vibes too!

21.12 Drinking buddy as always - tried this restaurant as our last drinking night in 2018, sake for drink and a lot of snack - deep fried lotus root, devil gyoza, prawn katsu and karage chicken.. eventhough its raining and cold but we still walking around before and after

Best gyoza in Auckland, super crispy and flavourful. Do not confused with Chinese dumplings as I feel other (poor) reviewers may have. They are 2 totally different cuisine!
Prawn katsu and tempura was not soggy and oily at all.
Very generous serving of the plum wine tasting set.
Would definitely come again.

After the disappointing dining experience, I don’t know what to say really. We decided to purchase a voucher which was made for “4 people”. It includes drinks along with 2 plates of gyoza. When the gyoza came, I thought it was a joke at first. The pork gyoza came in a batch of 6, whereas the shrimp ones came in a batch of 7. Don’t know how we could share these evenly amongst the 4 of us. Even the drinks were a let down. Our cocktails tasted like nothing but lemon infused water. I think they really skimped on the alcohol.Their dumplings were extremely well made which made the 2 star rating. However, it was the portion sizes that I think was beyond ridiculous.

Stunning dumplings & friendly service. Absolutely loved the spicy pork dumplings (good heat) & they do a superb karaage chicken. Pricing good for quality of food.

Amazing staff and genuinely the best dumplings I’ve ever had! The takoyaki was absolutely suburb - and you can’t leave without tasting the cheese gyoza! Would 10/10 recommend.

Really nice atmosphere, warm welcome and good quality Japanese food. Worth a try . Good selection that is vegetarian friendly and I am quite fond of Japanese whiskey.
The restaurant space looks completely different to how it was before, I preferred the open airy space of Adam&Arnold as the dark walls make it feel small and cramped but I appreciate how these guys completely made this space their own. We didn't have a booking on a Friday night but came early so was able to be seated on bar stools which was awesome. The one thing that was missing was hooks for bags/coats/umbrellas for that type of seating.

My Samurai cocktail was light and refreshing but a lot sweeter than I expected. I couldn't taste the lime at all so I think it could do with a few squeezes of lime as well as the slices in there, and minus the fruit sticker would be good too. We all ended up getting the pork gyōza soup but it was completely different to what I had expected. I was hoping for a light salty pork broth but instead it had quite a strong peanut taste and thick consistency, almost like a satay sauce. I also got the fried karage chicken, which was delicious and deep fried.

Service was attentive but possibly quite tight for how busy it got as we left. Overall not a bad dining experience but room for improvement.

I base the score here on the generous pours of drinks, the fact that they are well priced and also the quick delivery of our order. However the gyoza/dumplings are the other (and bad) side of this experience. We ordered the wagyu, prawn and also the pork gyozas. They had almost no flavour at all and seriously the prawn tested like nothing. And they say that it's rice paper wrapped - but it came out in something that was definitely not rice paper. Also the dumpling that was supposed to come in a fish stock and sesame soup came in a thick peanut flavoured sauce. If you are looking for good tasty dumplings and/or gyoza in Auckland then there are a lot of far better places. Heck - frozen supermarket dumplings are tastier than these! Oh and the pours of chilli oil etc that they have with the gyoza were very very mean - and then you can order chilli oil for $3 a time. Isn't it free in other places? We were really excited when this place opened - and really let down when we went there.

Walked in and asked for a table. They said they we’re all booked even though there were 4-5 empty tables. And other sharing tables that had space. Then walked out and one of the patrons left their tables and others walked in and overheard them asking if they had any tables and they said yes take the one that was just freed.
