Review Gengis Khan Mongolian Bbq Restaurant - Auckland Central

Kevin Soole
Really enjoyed Gengis Khan. All you can eat - grab the fresh meats, veges, sauces, spices in a bowl and hand to the cook who will stir fry your selection. Go back as many times as you like. Finish with desert of cooked on demand pancakes and ice cream etc. Suitable for solo to large groups. Licensed and BYO wine only. Make sure you go hungry!

Hands down love this place - delicious food, great atmosphere and service is 1000/10. Their pancakes are so delish, I could go just for the pancakes. So happy to have found a reasonably priced local place to eat.. would 100% recommend. Great for groups, people with kids or a date night!

Great tasting food, went here to celebrate my husband's birthday. The atmosphere was great, had 2 graduations there at the same time and plenty of food! Kids loved it.

This place is great for a cheap dinner that's all you can eat! $25 for an adult is really good. Make your own meal and other food options you can just grab while you wait till yours is being cooked! Lovely staff! Very friendly place and there is even dessert with pan cakes they make!! Really enjoyed and recommend this restaurant!!!

Great place to come for good all you can eat food, not as big as other gengis khan restaurants but still caters well

Would recommend Gengis. Great selection of fresh food, very entertaining watching it cooked on a large Mongolian BBQ. All you can eat buffet with dessert for $25. Family friendly good for kids.

Very nice experience here but the setting is a little cramped. I think it needs to be spread out a bit more.

Had dinner with my wife, and we both loved the food they prepared for us from our own choices.

The food here is amazing the only reason I gave atmosphere a 3 is because it's Tuesday night and very quiet I can't believe this place isn't packed every night of the week total value for money im so full im about to explode and I'll be coming here more often in the future 😋😀

Service with a smile! Skilled chef, fresh meat and vege, and an overall superb eating experience. Will be back!

We went on a non busy night. The best pancakes we have ever had! Fluffy and just delicious! Meat variety is better than that of the Henderson one. Less sides but I prefer more meat options than sides to be honest. Customer service was amazing. Chef held it down on his own that evening and we were amazed!
Rosie Conroy
The service was great and the food was exactly what can be expected from a buffet. My son absolutely loved the pancakes and Ice cream station.

I have been to the Takapuna branch which recently closed permanantly, multiple times but it was my first visit here. Wide range of meat, seafood and vegetables. And I like the icecream and the pancakes they cook for us on the spot if we ask.

Was meant to be celebrating my sons birthday BUT instead in the middle of dinner I had the older Asian lady who wore glasses interrogate me about who the children were & how old they were. After I pointed out who the kids were & said how old they were she again told me I was wrong. I had to tell her several times she was pissing me off & to get out of my face. How disgusting, embarrassing & bloody down right rude. I hope no one ever visits your establishment because it sucks & you lady have no idea how to speak to people OR have the decency to THINK about when best to address an issue or query. I have told my family & friends NEVER to bother setting foot through the doors. Shame on you & I hope the other people didn’t find hair in their food like I did.

We came here because my 9year old son decided he wanted to have a birthday dinner here with the family which consisted of 5 kids and 9 adults. Man how rude is the lady there. Hovering around our table like we going to steal something. Then she rudely came to our table not 9nce but twice to ask how many kids we had and that we have not paid for them and some other crap. Hey lady I've been in hospitality for over 20years and there are ways to discreetly address people without embracing them in front of everyone. You need to treat your customers properly. What made it worse was that 2 of us found hair in our food which just put us off. We will not be back to your restaurant especially after the way you spoke to us as we left and I now know why your establishment is quite especially for a Friday
Togiasimi Ikitule
We held my brothers 40th here and tbh it will probably be my first and last time here. Hardly any parking space, the atmosphere feels meh, the range of meat is nice but your cooks need more training in learning how to cook meat properly. It felt cramped and the lady tried to charge our group an extra 2 people. Maybe have a better system when holding big groups..

Our group booked the function room for 20 people for a celebratory event earlier this month. The host (Asian lady) kept disturbing our guests asking them to pay right then and there during the night because she wasn't happy that 16 people turned up and not the 20 as planned (something beyond my control) Seemed like all she cared about was the money because she kept going on about how she refused another bigger group from booking because of us 😞😥 She didn't care about how badly she treated us, was unapologetic and refused to serve drinks🍹 when we ordered them. She only served drinks after we paid for our meals. I was appalled at the rude customer service to say the least and highly embarrassed in front of guests. The Asian lady demanded that I pay for the extra 4 people that didn't turn up, but after the way she treated us I didn't want to. I will never bring my business back to this place again. We had such a negative experience for a night that was meant to be enjoyed. To the host, please learn to treat people with respect and not see them as dollar signs💲💱💲People have feelings and a heart ❤ Honestly you remind me of Mr Krabs from the 'Spongebob' cartoon but meaner and at least he has better customer service skills. Word can get around fast and your reputation as a person and as Genghis Khan restaurant can go downhill. I used to frequent👣 there but now I will never step in your doors again. Sincerely not yours, LOYAL EX-CUSTOMER

Friendly staff, clean environment. Quite enjoy dining experience here each time I visit. A good array of meats & vegetables mixed with some lovely sauces. Chefs cook it up in a quick and concise manner. Love the pancakes also. Moderate price for a good meal.

This is an all-you-can-eat mangolian BBQ food restaurant. The highlight is the mangolian fried noodles where you get to choose the ingredients, as guided by the chart pasted visibly on the wall. Once you have completed your selection, hand over your plate of ingredients to the chef, he will then cook the noodles "live" before you. If there were a queue, you would have to wait for your turn on a first-come, first-served basis. The noodles I had were just average, the other foods in the spread were not as good though.<br/><br/>My overall rating is actually 2.5, but as there is no such half-star rating, I have rated it 3.<br/><br/>I also dined at Gengis Khan in Epsom, the food quality was somewhat similar. Thus, my rating is the same for Gengis Khan Epsom too.<br/><br/>Food & Beverage : 5/10<br/>Service : 6/10<br/>Price : 6/10<br/>Ambience : 6/10

The staff here were great. The food was delicious but because it wasn’t busy and we went later in the night I didn’t feel safe eating some of the meats. We were more looking forward to the pancakes which we only got one serving of because they close down the grill early for clean up. There was some random love decor like we were at a wedding reception? Will be back though because it was only $25 each! Great for a spontaneous night out.

I normally always have a great time here and have been coming for about 4 years the service is good, food is nice and they are normally quick to replenish the food stations however this time the barbecue sauce (the large bottle you use for the meats/veges) had a fly in it 😳 the waitress did check the other ones which I though was good however I have never had this experience at new Lynn before. I don’t know if I will be as keen to come back which is unfortunate.
Amy
The food was ok but I love the concept! At $25pp I was realistic with my expectations of food quality and I wasn't disappointed at all. Great variety of meats, vegetables, oils and sauces. I like that they have pancake and ice cream options too unlike other buffet places. Good value!

Booked a group of over 20 adults. Had awesome service from staff they were very very patient<br/>-Bartender let us split pay between group. Would definitely come back!!! Thank you God Bless. Very happy customers😊

After my great experience at the Epsom Gengis Khan, I thought I'd try this one in New Lynn with my family as it's closer to home. <br/>First thing I noticed was how cold it was inside - very breezy. The service was great which is what my rating is more so based on. The waiter was attentive in collecting our plates that we were finished with. However the beef tasted a bit off, and the Korean style chicken ran out quick and wasn't refilled. <br/>Wasn't any soap in the bathroom either. <br/>Overall not a bad experience, but would prefer the epsom location for this restaurant.
Geraldine Rasela Pua-Ioane
Customer service was great, the front of house person was a great host. Food was however average, garlic bread and the rest needed replacing.
Benedict Uy
The selection of hot foods wasn't very big but they also had a few salad options. There was a fair selection of items for the BBQ. Lots of different meats, seafood and veges. It was a bit disappointing that when they ran out they didn't top it up, although it was already fairly late when we started (around 8pm).<br/><br/>Otherwise it didn't take long to get our food cooked by the chef. Tables were cleared when we got back from the next round. The pancake was quite nice and they were able to make Micky mouse pancakes. Nice way to get really full.
Dennis Tohovaka
We have come here several times.  The place is easy to get to in New Lynn and there's plenty of parking nearby.  The service has always been with a smile, and the food was fine.  It wasn't as busy as the Epsom venue, so if you want to enjoy your meal without the big crowd hassle and waiting forever in long lines, come here. :)

Great service! Great range of meat and vegetable and a nice atmosphere. We got there at 5:30 before the 6 and 7 pm rush hour. Customer service was great and you even get to dine in for free on your birthday! I would recommend this Gengis Khan over the Henderson one, Botany one and the Manukau one. My first 5 star rating on Zomato!!!!!

Great food, succulent meat, cooked to perfection by the Chefs. Great collection of sauces, condiments & oils. Well presented. Great atmosphere, superb service especially by Xiaoyu Pan. Please ask for him by name for a great dining experience.<br/>Great place to celebrate your birthday. Cheers

Went with my family to have dinner, I wish they did lunch too. Kind waiters and waitresses, but really gotta praise the chefs on the BBQ. All three of them were great, doing hard work, but especially the tall man with the snapback cap on, I talked to him but don't remember his name. He was very kind and cooked the best food. Would definitely recommend this restaurant, and if anyone goes, make sure to get your food cooked by the man in jeans with a snapback cap on, and surely tell him that 'Sione said hi' 👋

I have a nice dinner with my best friends and family today, and they like it. The staff there are very good, I think I will came back again.

If you need a place where you get fresh cooked food then this would be the place. <br/>You can pick your own meat sauces and veggies and just pass it to your chef they cook in front of your eyes. <br/>More than BBQ they have simple things like rice with a curry ,noodles salads, soups desserts and more importantly ice cream and Tea. <br/>Well if it's your bday carry your ID along with you the foods on the house around 25 dollars Per Person. Worth it

Yum good variety a bit confused at first bt found our way around. They ran out of choc ice cream bt it was all good. Wd be even better if they offered fruits with the ice cream 😀

My family love this place th kids love th chips and micky mouse pancakes bt it wud be a 5star for me if there were more deserts. The meat is fresh the bbq guys cook it like u want it the variety of side dishes are yum and restocked frequently. Th restaurant is clean customer service is excellent. We always go back.

I've been to three different Gengis Khan Mongolian BBQ buffet and I have to say that this one is the best. All those fresh ingredients in this restaurant are beautiful enough to feast the eyes. As for flavor, I recommend that try to add little sauce on the raw materials or put it in another bowl and ask the chef to barbecue the food first then mix with sauce. In this case, we can enjoy the original taste of the food without being over-seasoning. Compared with other BBQ buffet, the meat in here is more juicy and bigger because every kind of meat are cut by the staffs, not machine. <br/>From tables, chairs and floor to every single plate, knife and fork, I can say nothing but clean and hygiene, which is basic criteria for a restaurant but easily being neglected by others. What I like most is the atmosphere of welcome and comfortable. Every people working in here is usually wearing a smile on the face. I have to admit it's a ideal place for families, friends and lovers.

Last weekend was the third time for me to have dinner here. What has changed? It was not as busy as before--because we came at 8PM already, which is 2 hours before closing time. This is good because there was no "pressure" in filling my bowl for the barbecue. And I think this was the first time for me to really taste what I've put in the bowl.<br/><br/>The downside of coming in close to the end-of-business-day is that one has to "scrape" at the soup pot and all other popular items. :-(<br/><br/>The food? I can only comment on what I ate--I can't try all items in one visit. (Which could mean another visit is necessary).<br/><br/>There were fresh ingredients for the "barbecue". I was able to make a good vegetarian mix. (My husband said he enjoyed the beef and the marinated chicken). The second batch I made (with noodles) was really good. The vegetarian spring rolls were nicely hot and crisp.<br/><br/>The letdown? The broccoli soup tasted like evaporated milk with broccoli flavour. The pumpkin soup was too sweet--or was it really meant to be that sweet? (Please pardon my observation, but I am a soup lover).<br/><br/>The service was good. :-) The decor? A retouch on the wall paint would be nice. And the couch cover could be better--that particular corner looks "neglected". Does this affect dining experience? Yes, it does. :-)

I went to Gengis khan on Valentine's Day with my girlfriend for the candlelight dinner.<br/><br/>Even the candlelight was much different than i imagined, the foods are quiet delicious<br/>.<br/><br/>Their staff cooked the dishes i chose in front of me so that i could smell the aroma of them. Foods there were still fresh and I prefer their BBQ fish (that tasted amazing with your owen choose sauces). Also, their service were nice. All of their staff were smilling all the time, that made me feel so kind. I and my girlfriend really enjoyed their foods and we planed to go their again~~~

A great place for groups and families, very delicious food, cooked nicely. However, the topping up of the buffet needs to be improved. When it is busy and they have ran out of something, it is never attended to as a priority. Do enjoy the option for outdoor and indoor seating.

great place to go with friends, their food is fantastic and delicious. there are also Icecream and pancake available, good place to eat in winter.

Been here about a year ago. Seating arrangements are ok. Food is good but the pastries like spring rolls and such were obviously left out too long and went super dry. The line at the grill Was a bit squished because there was a food station near by. But all in all the food was nice

Well worth the money if you are out to celebrate a special occasion- went for a "Signed contract for first job" celebration. Lovely service and very attentive waiters who will swoop down on your used dishes like vultures (in a good way).<br/><br/>Worth the experience if you have never been to buffets!
Claire Emily
So yuckkkkkkkkk???? Food was cold as and soggy, meat was extremely chewy, although pancakes were average, quite tasteless. Wouldn't recommend😢

I have been here many times love the place so does everyone i bring along.<br/><br/>The staff are great, the food is tasty, u pick your ingredients and get them to cook it how can u go wrong i think they have a wider range of buffet items than any other genghis khan locations ive been to. The kids love the pancakes but it would be nice if they had more deserts.  <br/><br/>Overall a decent place to dine in.

I went to university in the states for half a year on exchange and they would have cafeteria halls filled with food. There would be a hot foods line, ice cream station, a make your own pasta or pizza station and hot drinks line. It was always served and managed by students who wanted to make some money by working in the cafeteria. I used to get really excited and take all the options and not be able to finish any of it because it actually wasn't that nice.<br/><br/>This is exactly what Gengis Khan New Lynn reminded me of except instead of make your own pasta it was make your own stir fry, it had darker lighting that didn't do much to ambience but still had teenagers working the till and barbecue. And like my self from two years ago, I tried to eat everything and found that everything was average at best. <br/><br/>The main attraction, the "Mongolian stirfry", I thought was pretty bad. I added in all these sauces and when all of ours came back it all looked the same- black from the grill and tasting smoky. That's not something I enjoy. Plus my friend saw them putting other people's orders in her food by mistake, and picked out two bits of half cooked chicken. <br/><br/>The buffet food is the most basic of all buffet foods... It was very similar to the food I used to eat at school. Macaroni salad... Egg salad... Hot chips... Samosas and spring rolls from those supermarket packets.. Two choices of soup. Because I like egg salad and macaroni salad and chips I happily ate them and would eat them again, but that sort of food is so, so basic. I feel 5 year old me would've appreciated the food. But it's not exactly food I want to go to a restaurant and pay money for. There were also two choices of soup- pumpkin and broccoli and cheese. I had the broccoli one with garlic bread and I didn't even come close to finishing it. I did not like it.<br/><br/>Dessert was pancakes and icecream. Being a glutton, I decided to get a pancake, put some ice cream on it and drown it in sauce as buffets activate this demand in my mind that I must. Try. Everything. This was sort of a mistake because I had eaten one plate of stirfry and one and a half plates of the buffet picnic food. Toward the end of the dessert I was feeling qqqqquuiiitteeeee full and looking at the plate made me feel queasy. Once again, very basic flavours. I know I shouldn't be picky, but my lower tier university in the states had a fully decked out ice cream station, it was amazing.<br/><br/>What bought the mood down for the night was the children running around the restaurant. This has nothing to do with Gengis khan, but this is also why I didn't enjoy it as much. It wasn't that they were running around, but one came up and picked up my phone and tried to play with it, and then licked my friends plate. Like she was constantly coming over and yelling at us to look at her when we gave no indication that we wanted to be approached. Kids are so brave these days. The interior and chairs of Gengis khan new Lynn though... Some new chairs would do wonders. They feel and look like school chairs. I have heard that the Epsom one is a lot classier though. <br/><br/>Anyway, I left the restaurant feeling uncomfortably bloated, which is my target when I go to buffets, so the food is definitely edible. I don't think I want to go back, and I was going to say I would consider taking my future kids which might happen in a decade from now, but after a little girl dressed in a frozen Anna dress tried to stick her fingers in my plate, I'm not feeling like I'm in a rush to have any kids to bring here after all.

Gengis khan is a great place to go on a budget. Eat as much as you want for the set price. Awesome when you have a boyfriend with a hollow leg as he can literally eat until he is full. The salad bar runs out quite quickly and often needs topping up as there is never much left!! Vegetarian friendly as you can pick your own stir fry however for strict vego's such as my boyfriends mum, her meal being cooker on a hot plate right next to meat was a big no no! I love it though. The pancakes are the goods!!!

Best meal I've ever had in my life. I've been to most Gengis Khan's in Auckland and i must admit that the New Lynn branch is the best. The chefs are all well-trained and professional, the staff are very kind and the food is just perfect! I am planning to go there again soon and i would recommend this restaurant to everybody because the price is really worth the fantastic meal.
Chin And Prony Powichitkul
I love the idea of this place. Pick your meat, veggies and sauces which is then Grilled in front of you by a special chef. However, there seems to be a slight drop in standards and consistency. My first few visits were always up to standard and the meat were always fresh. The last couple times though, the meat were almost off. I assume this was due to their shop being quiet for a couple days prior thus using the leftover meat from the days before. This is a review just for this branch though, my visits to the Epsom branch were always up to high standards and the staff there were a lot more attentive.
Richard
Only ever been to the one in wellington. Wasn't let down. Slightly different but still great food and service and the pancakes for dessert are amazing
Juliet Douglas
This place is great, not expensive and the food is tasty given it's cooked right in front of you. Obviously it's not upmarket but I've always enjoyed it for tasty food in a hurry. My only complaint recently is the seats were disgustingly sticky when I sat down. I understand a lot of families dine here with young children but really, to sit on a chair and find your clothes sticking to it is really a big no no. Put me off my dinner. That said I can't fault the friendly staff/ chefs and usually enjoy everything about this place for what it is.
Tan.ned
It was an a-okay experience. Each single item was cooked on an overused grill plate with absolutely no regard for the flavors as the customers are left guessing ehich flavors compliments which. We are basically left to make our own food and they are used as "microwaves"
Tessa
We ate so much, it was painful!!! Lovely service, great food! And byo

Besides lack of parking on site have to park on side street I thoroughly enjoy dining here. Receiving excellent service from the waitresses makes a difference to your overall experience why I rated 5 stars. I like the welcoming laid back atmosphere inside restaurant and highly recommend others to try.
Grace
Awesome food and service. Great, polite and friendly staff. My little sister loved it and it was totally fun! It was clean and spacious. A fantastic experience where you can eat as much as you want.<br/><br/>Would highly recommend and visit again. A++

Been to Gengis numerous times &amp; every time has been an exceptional dining experience. Staff are always friendly &amp; welcoming. Chefs are amazing &amp; the food is delicious. Always first choice when considering dining at a buffet restaurant. Highly recommend.

Only one word. Amazing, I wish I had gone earlier. Food was so neat choose it yourself &amp; watch it be cooked by friendly amazing staff, dessert the same not much selection but it is right for the restaurant style we went last night with my partner &amp; can not wait to take my wee girl as I know she will love it. I can also not say enough of your staff they are amazing some of the best hospitality staff I have meet, prompt, friendly, nice &amp; explained everything so well. Recommend so much. Will be bring many more to eat here as well.

Love the food, super great value! went there for my hubby's birthday. Clean. And everything was perfectly cooked. Kids cued up for pancakes and the chefs made cute mickey mouse shaped ones for them. How cool is that? will definitely be back again and recommend this place to anyone that like child friendly restaurants, great food, and good value for money A+.<br/>Thanks so much for a wonderful night :)

We decided on Sunday afternoon to take a group of 10 plus a baby for a meal without making a booking - just before Xmas! <br/>However the staff were very helpful and made us welcome. It had been some time since we had visited GK New Lynn and we were so pleased that we had chosen this particular restaurant. It's a wonderful place for children who feel free to choose what they want and for some people who may eat more than they could afford in another restaurant! The food was fresh and delicious, the service was great and the staff very friendly. I'm looking forward to returning soon. Happy New Year GK!

Really divided on this one. Lovely staff, full house so yes popular.<br/>But is $25.90 flat fee cheap ~ I guess ok for all you can eat.<br/> But food seemed very bland no matter how much garlic sauce<br/>etc I added. Perhaps I choose the wrong condiments but felt very much like Valentines with Flames! Many food courts give better value for money IMHO.
Lucy
Cheap and yummy. Clean restaurant, nice staff however the meat is sometimes frozen when it's out on the trays. Be careful that you don't get overcharged if you're with a large group they will take your money
Linda Tumarama
My 1st time here and enjoyed every bit of my dinner...The service was friendly and helpful...The waitress was absolutely helpful and kind...<br/><br/>Recommend it to everyone...<br/><br/>Food was good for price

Had to check this place after reading all the positive reviews. This is probably one of my favourite restaurants in Auckland. I loved it because it was the first time I've ever tipped the restaurant. I've been to Valentines, Happy Days, Dennys, La Porchetta, Steak House in nearly all the different areas in Auckland and this place is my favourite. Because you have a lot of variety of food and its healthy. That's the main thing I like for myself because when you go to a restaurant you know your going to be eating more than you should. But I loved this place, great staff, good value for money, friendly environment, overall a nice vibe and the desert adds the perfect touch to the night. Maybe just adding a bit more variety with desert like cakes or something. But still 5 stars for me. I recommend it to all.

Genghi Khan, new lynn: great place to eat, worthwhile time and money...staff are friendly, the place is very clean. I have been twice this year.

Great place! Been here recently and years ago and each time service has been great and food awesome! Love it :) Casual enough for the kids (as someone else mentioned), better than the 'Gengys' brand elsewhere. Fun, top notch place. Fairly good prices too.
Sara
Great place. Friendly, relaxed staff. Great price for all you can eat. Definitely recommend!
Riah

A great restaurant with friendly staff and good food. Also casual enough to be able to easily take the children. We are regulars.
