Review Shaolin Kung Fu Noodle - Auckland Central

B.E.V Birds eye View
We tried beef noodles which were quite nice but also had lots of fat attached as per another review here. They serve hot tea for free which is quite nice prior to a meal. We also tried dumplings which were quite bland and not the best dumplings but not the worst and with the Chilli and vinegar sauce it was yum. I'd recommend trying it and seeing if it's up your alley for food

Come here for a late night dinner. Ordered the chicken wonton soup and the spicy kung fu noodles (both of which were good!). Good portion size for price, nice & hot & hearty. Would come back!

Delivers every time but could be better in customer service. The meat portions seem to be getting less and less though! Very cramped seating probably need a renovation of sorts.

A popular spot for Chinese hand-pulled noodles! We got the famous Xinjiang lamb noodles which was really rich in flavour and definitely had a kick to it. The texture of the noodles was top-notch and was exactly what I came here for. The lamb was thinly sliced and well-seasoned but could have done with more lamb, there were only a few sad pieces of lamb. The kebabs were OK. The spring onion pancake was a good simple side dish. I highly recommend dipping it in the noodles sauce! Portion was huge for the price and food came out fast.

This is the way I like it! Hand cut noodles with spicy beef soup, what a great combination it is! If I had enough time I would definitely order large portion of that. It's indeed a great Hala restaurant they are not only good at noodles they are also good at many.

Update: Had their Spicy sensational chicken tonight - was a little average, lots of sharp bones so be careful when you eat; the noodles were so chewy which i really like! Their dumplings and Xinjiang lamb noodles surprisingly good! just perfect when you want some pan fried dumplings
Rosie
Delicious dumplings ~ but my favourite absolutely had to be the spring onion pancake. Lots of vegetarian options. These are clearly marked too which is always helpful.

Great hot food served fresh and quick. The prices are worth what you order. Love it when you can hear the chefs sing while they prepare the food! The cleaning of the table items and the tables themselves could improve.

One of my favorite places in Auckland for halal Chinese cuisine. Never fails to satisfy my hunger. Two of my favorite dishes is the spicy lamb fried rice and Goji berry lamb soup noodles. There is also extra space upstairs if you see downstairs is full. Tight space but the food is awesome!

We visited on the Sunday for our lunch at 12:30pm. No waiting is needed. Chicken fry noodle is so good. Fried dumplings are lovely too.

Noodles are delicious and yummy yet potatoes in the dish (sensational spicy chicken served with noodles) are lack of flavor and somehow over cooked. Recommend their spicy sauce which is a good company for the noodles. Overall they are good at prompt service and high quality noodles.

Xinjiang Lamb Fried Noodle one of the best things i've ever had in my life. YOOO 🔥 很好吃

Visited them to have some halal chinese food. So, i ordered beef burger (spicy). I never had such an amazing burger. I loved it. It was spicy, full of flavours, quantity of meat was good. Beef cooked in chinese style served on chinese pan bread i think. It was delicious. Next time will try some other things. They serve halal. thank you.

Hands down my favourite hand pulled noodles in Auckland! I also love the kebab and dumplings, probably one of the best cheap eats in Auckland.

Food wasn't too great. Just average.. Expected more though.... Too oily food...

Spent dinner with friends here - @Denny Setiawan<br/>I ordered spicy beef noodle and also we had steam dumpling. Good dinner with yummy food.

Absolute shocker. I would give 0 stars if I could. The service was both rude and terrible. Waited at an upstairs table for about 15 minutes before being told we have to go downstairs to order our own meal. Water/tea never arrived despite couple requests. Disgusting hygiene including sticky tables and the toilet was horrible it made me no longer want to go as my piss and shit would be cleaner in my body.<br/><br/>And lastly, the food was also so bad that I couldn’t even finish my bowl of noodles. <br/><br/>Never again. Possibly the worst restaurant overall I have been to so far in my life.

Looking for a place to go in the weekend? You can't go wrong with picking any place on Dom road. This road is an institution. Just a great concentration of places that'll satisfy your foodie cravings. <br/><br/>Stopped by Shaolin Kung Fu Noodle House on a cold Friday evening and boy did it warm me up. All the dishes were great! Notable mentions go to the eggplant in spicy garlic sauce, cumin lamb and the skewers. Service can be a touch slow but it's excused with the quality of food!

Unkind Pre-Isolation Experience <br/><br/>I normally like posting 5 star reviews but since I was yelled at this matter needs to be made public. <br/><br/>The cashier was dissatisfied that I could only list 3/4 items of our order, even after explaining that my partner ordered it in Chinese and I could only understand 3 items. I rang my partner to find out the 4th item but this seemed to make her angrier. When leaving, I let her know that the service was a bad experience and she reacted by yelling that she was busy, gestured a hand block and walked away. I replied that it just wasn’t the right way to treat people and she yelled again. <br/><br/>This is the worst Dominion Road service I have encountered. Unhelpful, unkind, and uncouth.<br/><br/>Keep away from the service at this place. Go to a Wang Wang Pancakes, Barilla Dumplings, or Xi’an Noodle Bar.

Staff were extremely rude. Stay well clear!

There were too many small flies everywhere on the table, chopsticks and in my soup. when I raised the issue to the staff, they gave me a new soup which also had lots of flies in it but didn't bother cleaning anything. I love their food but I wouldn't go eat there for a while. very disappointing.
Afshan Afzaly
I had someone YELL AT ME for a good five minutes simply because I asked them to heat up my food, which was left on the table for god knows how long. Of course, I yelled back and told them to get someone who can probably communicate a bit more effectively over the phone and in person - ITS NOT THAT HARD.

There's nothing more comforting than a steaming bowl of handmade noodles and this place has em! Located on the lively Dominion Road in abundance of restaurants specialising in the asian cuisine - my visit here was like coming home to a warm hearty meal. The freshness of the ingredients & sophisticated flavours slowly erased the ill memory of my day with every mouthful of noodles I consumed. I can't fault these guys at all, they ticked every box. 5☆
Ashika Mudaliar
It's a cute place that you would miss if you walked past especially on busy days when you have to wait for a table but it is 100% worth it. The food is great and service is usually very fast and the staff are really nice

Visited this outlet restaurant, well known for their hand made noodles. Located on a corner of the busy Dominion Road.<br/><br/>The restaurant is quite dirty and crowded. But I do acknowledge the flavoring of their food and noodles. <br/><br/>The Xinjiang Lamb Fried Noodles has stretchy noodles but the cooking was quite imprudent, some of the noodles were still raw because they were sticking against each other. Plus they added way too much cornstarch to the dish. <br/>The cold dish - beef tripe was quite flavorful and tasty.<br/><br/>The food were in great portions, but the serving was slightly slow. <br/><br/>Taste: 8/10<br/>Presentation: 4/10<br/>Service: 6/10<br/>Ambience: 3/10<br/>Value for money: 7/10<br/><br/>Price $18 per person

Got the Kung fu braised lamb noodles, Dan Dan noodles with mince on top and the lamb kebabs! The braised lamb noodles had a mild flavored broth, with very long rubbery noodles which took a lot of chewing. However the Dan Dan noodles were very tasty and had spicy sauce at the bottom which mixed nicely. The skewers with cumin were also yummy.

I pretty much get the same thing everyyy time I come here. First off, I’m there for the hand pulled noodles. Handpulled noodles are my faveee, I just LOVE the chewy texture, and Shaolin never disappoints. I also HAVE to get the spring onion pancake (葱油饼) as a side each time, it’s one of my favourite Chinese food. It’s called spring onion pizza on their menu and doesn’t actually look flat like the photo and like how other places do their spring onion pancakes. Shaolin does them exactly the way I like it - flakey, crispy and flavourful. Please try it if you haven’t! And last but not least, Shaolin is one of my top cheap eats in Auckland. Each bowl of noodle here (small size) was only $11.90. All large size noodles are only a $1 more!<br/><br/>Check out my insta @ohmyfoodiegoodie to follow more of my tried eats!

My favourite noodle and dumpling place! The fish dumplings are my all time fave, and the people are really nice!
Brandon Huang
Honestly quite mediocre. The dumplings were small, the wrappers were kind of thick, and the filling was underwhelming. The noodles were nice and chewy, but they didn’t taste very interesting, or very spicy - the lamb was nicely cooked though.<br/><br/>If you’re craving dumplings, I’d go to Eden Noodles Cafe, and if you’re craving chewy, hand-pulled noodles, I’d go to Xi’an Food Bar just across the road.<br/><br/>Xinjiang lamb noodles: 6/10<br/>Lamb and chive dumplings: 4/10

Stopped in here , one of the busiest Chineese spot for a quick dinner. Ordered the hot n spicy beef noodle soup and Pan fried Chicken, mushroom n celery dumplings. Both were pefect in taste and servings. The hot n spicy noodle soup was very filling , with rich amount of meat and flavours.<br/>Food rate: 5/5<br/>Service : 5/5<br/>Thankyou for hosting us !! .

The overall service is good and the food arrived promptly. However what disappointed us during our meal was the fact that their spicy beef noodles have completely changed in flavour and the cuts of meat were more fattier and less tasty. We were really disappointed with the quality of the broth as well as it did not taste the same as the previous one and had a lot more oil with less flavour. If you like the old taste of Shaolin Kung Fu noodle pre 2016, then this establishment may no longer be for you.
Gourmet Vegetarians
Another unassuming dumpling spot on Dom road yet Shaolin Kung Fu Noodles home to hands down the tastiest vegetarian dumplings I’ve had in Auckland. It’s not easy to find good vegetarian dumplings, but the egg and chive pan fried dumplings are just packed with flavour, the egg filling gives a great texture and the pan-fried finish just completes these little parcels of perfection. Would highly recommend!

Came here tonight for a late supper. Ordered spicy beef noodles. Their noodles are sliced noodles, is ok, personally I find it a bit hard. Soup base is ok, spicy as expected but can’t taste much else. Beef is ok. I also ordered BBQ chicken crunch bones and lamb. The lamb is a bit small. Chicken portion is ok. Seasoning is perfect.

Great value for money!….But value for money can also mean some drawbacks.<br/>.<br/>Feeding six hungry people after an intense 2 hour exercise session can be challenging especially looking for something cheap and quick. We stumbled upon ‘Shaolin Kung Fu Noodle’ which is located at one of the busiest roads on a Saturday night, Dominion Road. <br/>.<br/>The Lamb and chives pan fried dumplings were the crowds favourite that night! For anyone who does not usually eat lamb, these dumplings will make you do so!!! Downside was that the filling was smaller than expected which tends to fall out of the dumpling wrapper if not eaten in one piece 🤣. However, it was a minor setback to the flavour that it packs! Dip it in your favourite soy sauce and chilli, it is sure to give you nice kick 😝.<br/>.<br/>The noodles were a bit of a hit and miss! We ordered the: cleaver beef, seafood, and hot and spicy beef kung fu noodles. It would actually be better if they had the ingredients on the menu or more photos to display their dishes as it was difficult to suss out which one to pick. The seafood and the cleaver beef noodles were great! The beef was tender and there was a decent mixture of different types of seafood on the other dish. The broth on each dish complemented each other just right and the hand pulled thick noodles were surprisingly addicting 😍!! On the other hand, the hot and spicy beef was too hot for everyone’s liking 😂 it would be good if they asked us about the ‘spicy level’???<br/>.<br/>$14 each for six people is not bad when sharing good food and stories!<br/>.<br/>.<br/>.<br/>.<br/>.<br/>#igfood #foodstagram #foodbloggers #nomnom #instayum #eatfamous #foodblog #hungry #eats #foodgasm #cleaneating #foodphotography #foodpics #foodlover #foodie #burgers #yummy #foodography

One of the oldest chinese noodle restaurant in Auckland. Henan style lamb noodle taste good. Dumplings in sour soup really special, but taste good too.
Najeeb Haider Zaidi
Good chinese food. One of the few halal chinese outlets in the city.<br/>Quantity is quite generous. It's authentic Chinese, so you need to be expert in ordering the chinese food.<br/>Restauraunt gets too busy after 7:30PM but staff is quick and helpful so arrange table quickly.<br/>Service is quick and timely.
Lily Cleary
Just wanna start off by saying that maybe I’m missing something.<br/>Ordered the dry egg noodles, which I for some reason thought would be a stir fry kind of situation. It was really just some noodles in water (??), with some wet scrambled egg, tomato (?!) and cucumber. None of these elements were mentioned in the menu so kinda feel like I was either given the wrong plate, or they should sort their menu out. Very weird either way

Came here because I was craving Big Plate Chicken. We also got Beef with Spring Onion and Lamb Soup<br/><br/>- Big Plate Chicken (7/10) Comes in 2 sizes, S and L...we got the Small but it was massive! Almost didn’t have space for anything else on the table jeez. Flavour-wise it could have been a bit more punchier, and they weren’t as generous with the chicken, they were rather small and bony pieces. The noodles were very good though; chewy and thick just the way it should be! <br/><br/>- Beef and Spring Onion (8/10) more or less exactly what it’s named. Could have been more pepper added to it to elevate the flavours a bit, but portions were good and beef were cooked tenderly and well. <br/><br/>- Lamb Soup (10/10) for those brave enough to eat chopped up sheep organs, try this! It’s insanely aromatic, flavoursome and VERY generous with the organs! <br/><br/>Food: 8/10<br/>Price: 8/10<br/>Ambience: 6/10<br/>Service: -

Tried several dishes here. Lamb skewer is really nice. Don’t expect too much on the environment. Food is value of money, and tastes all right.

Came here with partner and 5 year old. Noodles were ok, not enough meat in them but the actual handmade noodles were a lovely texture. The dumplings were good flavour but the casing was gummy and not thin enough. Probably won’t come back when there are many nicer Chinese noodle places on the same block.
Jenny @ga.eats
The best hand pulled noodles!!! I love how chewy the they are, how spicy the chilli oil is and how flavourful the broth is even without adding in the spice. Chicken wontons extremely tasty. Green onion pancake is flaky, crispy and flavourful. Super affordable and filling.
Rita Ge
We love the texture of the noodles with a mouthful peanut butter taste. We also ordered some Lamb&Chives pan-fried dumplings, they are tasty but a bit greasy for us.
Emily Gossen
Came here with friends to satisfy those noodles cravings, I had the Dan Dan noodles and pan fried lamb and chive dumplings which were shared. The staff here are really friendly and attentive in comparison to the other busy restaurants on Dominon Rd. My noodles were really nice and the pork topping was fried nicely and packed with flavour, it would’ve been nice if there was more chilli sauce at the bottom of the bowl to mix into the noodles. Left really full and satisfied, I’ll be back for more. <br/><br/>Food - 4/5<br/>Service - 4/5<br/>Price - 4/5<br/>Ambience - 3.5/5

I grew up eating and living this type of noodle back home so was thrilled to see that it has been brought over to NZ when these guys first opened, it's not as good as back home but it is getting pretty damn close.<br/><br/>Classic dish, the lamb thick noodles, the broth is so fragrant, it's been on the boil for hours and you can really see it coming through in the colour. The noodles are top notch, hand pulled, thick, chewy, there is nothing I do not love about these noodles here, you can put them in anything and they will be delicious.<br/><br/>Most of the variations here use the same type of noodles so you can expect a level of consistency, these guys also do all sorts of small side dishes which I strongly recommend trying out, they are all the same things we have back home in China, kind of like peasant food, but so delicious.<br/><br/>Only mark down for this place is that their prices were very reasonable, but have gotten more expensive over the years, I think for what it is, it could be cheaper.

Came here on a Tuesday night, and it was pretty busy . Really good service, gave us water straight away and were very attentive. So much to choose from, its awesome! We ordered the lamb noodles, spring onion pizza and pan fried vege dumplings. The pizza did not look like a regular pizza so we were quite surprised, but it was actually one of the best pizzas that we've ever had!! The noodles were very filling and yummy. The dumplings were soooo good, I couldn't finish them but took them home with me as they were too good to waste. The ambiance isn't the greatest, as it is quite outdated and stuffy. <br/><br/>Overall, very good price for the amount of food we got and really good, fast service. Definitely recommend coming, and we will back again to try more from the menu!<br/> <br/><br/>Food: 10/10<br/>Service: 9/10<br/>Ambiance: 5/10 <br/>Price: 9/10

Portions are huge.<br/>Price is good.<br/>Quality is OK.<br/>Environment is stuffy<br/>I ordered the dumpling and kung pao chicken. They were both very ordinary. It seems that they specialise in Cold soups.

One of the few places in Auckland to get halal chinese food. Portions are served big, big on flavours too! The beef and lamb noodle dishes are great as usual. Dumplings are good too. What we found outstanding were the sweet and sour chicken and seasoned soft bone chicken. Each and every piece of chicken had the soft bone in it! Soft bone chicken is a child hood favourite of mine so I am particularly partial to it. Also the staff are very pleasant and accommodating. Great place! Farha Deen

Came here and ordered take out- very quick and friendly service yet not the nicest looking place if you are looking to dine in somewhere fancy. Nonetheless, Ordered the seasoned stir-fried squid and the Lamb fried noodles and both dishes were packed with flavour. There are a number of seafood options too which I really liked. The only downfall would be the hefty pricing-$28 for the squid alone was very expensive to me especially with the portion size that we had received. Would definitely come back and try something cheaper on the menu

This is our favourite place for good authentic Chinese food in Auckland. We have been coming here now for 3 years and always leave happy. Highly recommend the pork and chive steamed dumplings, the lovely cumin spiced lamb Chinese burger and the spicy cleaver sliced beef noodles.
The Man Who Ate Dominion Rd
Don't let the homemade noodles distract you, the STEAMED dumplings are great here. I would dare say better than Barilla.<br/><br/>Food is really tasty - not just salt msg and oil, there's some real depth to the flavour.<br/><br/>Big portions, small prices, average looking place. <br/><br/>I've been here around 5 times and service has always been quite bad.<br/><br/>You get the idea: not a place for a first date, great for groups so you can try the many options there are.

First time visiting this place! Fell in love with their dining tables I must say! Full of colorful characters 😍 But that was just the beginning of the eventful journey that night, spice was still on the way! Literallly...<br/><br/>We ordered:<br/><br/>Number 7 kung fu spicy noodles<br/>Number 74 Hot and spicy fried rice<br/>Spring onion pizza<br/><br/>In the kitchen we could see the chef making the noodles from scratch so that was defs one we were excited to try! The spicy noodles actually had 2 types of noodles and noodles made of tofu...and the noodles sure had a kick to them! 💥🔥<br/><br/>Definitely will be coming back again! 😋 8/10

Best cleaver cut noodles in town - hand made. I can't handle too much spice so I had won ton and asked for the cleaver cut noodles. Mrs had spicy beef cleaver cut noodles. Beef melt in mouth and not too much star anise. Was not too spicy just right. 🌶️😁Our second time back. A quick note that there is NO Pork 🐽 at this restaurant!

Im a huge fan of chinese hand pulled noodles... This is the right place to soaked in your tongue...<br/><br/>But, i found out that most chinese restaurants are having way too much menus... Please reduce it and not confusing us hahaha

My faves place and my family!!<br/>I LOVED the home made noodles and fried dumpling...<br/>The Chinese halal restaurant the best in Auckland,New Zealand...<br/>I'm shaolin lovers :)

One of my favourite Chinese noodle spots. The flavours of the broth are always unique but delicious. Interesting to see a menu without pork. Their cleaver sliced beef is so nice and tender. Another go to on the menu is their pancake and also the golden fried chicken wings!

After reading about the popularity of full body cringe Lit "food" reviews among the gram community, I have decided to dust off my fingerless foodreview gloves, and come out of my review retirement and give my favourite restaurant SHAOLIN NOODLES a review. <br/><br/>To be frank - having been AFK for more than a year from Zomato, I am a bit shocked to see shaolin is sitting on a 3.9. This is really an amazing establishment serving very authentic and delicious Xinjiang/Uyghur cuisine, with a sizable menu offering patrons many many options. You'll find that the restaurant has not tried to dumb down the menu, and have stayed true to the cuisine - which has been good - as you'll see going to this place  that its a melting pot of curious, culturally accepting, open minded, diverse group of people wanting to know what this type of Chinese food is about.<br/><br/>I've been coming here for dinner regularly for the past 2-3 years, and the usual xinjiang/Uyghur-style Laghman (Hand pulled noodle) cannot be missed, try it with any of the soups - they are all very good. There is something about the texture and bite of freshly made noodles that is so satisfying & delicious, that it is beyond describable with my limited english vocabulary - so can only resort to profanities and say it's "fking lit"  (sorry, if i made you vomit)<br/><br/>The dumplings are also made with the same fresh noodle dough, so the texture is again very good - and are fried on a pan and served upside down with the residual flour fried. quite unique, and i think reflects the pragmatic style of cooking that characterises xinjiang cuisine and many of the popular dishes (see Dapanji)<br/><br/>Somewhere in a parallel universe - Bourdain is still alive and is thoroughly enjoying  a large bowl of lamb noodles here for 'parts unknown' with Jacinda.
The Poor Foodie
I loved their cleaver sliced beef noodles! One thing that I still struggle in Chinese restaurants is that there are too many options to choose! I chose the beef noodles just because it was written on the blackboard as chefs recommendation 😂 but it didn’t disappoint me at all!<br/><br/>Beef was very tender (must have cooked slowly for hours) and the soup was full of flavours. It wasn’t spicy at all. My friend ordered fried noodles and the noodles were green in colour (celery noodles) but they just tasted like normal ones. The noodles were not bad also and in huge serving size!<br/><br/>I asked the waitress the difference between large and small size of noodles and turns out it’s just doubling the noodle amount. Although I’m a big eater, I only ordered small size because the noodles itself were very filling.<br/><br/>Food: 5/5<br/>Service: 3/5<br/>Overall: 5/5

I am a huge fan of noodles and this is one of the places I go to when dining on Dominion Road. Their hand-pulled noodles are delicious and they have a range of meats to complement the noodle. I also love their pan fried dumplings - though a little bit too oily, it tastes amazing and the pastry on top is crispy! It's definitely not the place for a quiet sit down dinner, however, if you are craving noodles and want a quick dinner with a carbohydrate indulgence - this is the place! <br/><br/>Though the ambience isn't the cleanest or modern looking, that's the dining style on Dominion road so if you were to dine there it'd definitely be for the food! <br/><br/>Food 8/10<br/>Ambience 6.5/10<br/>Service 5/10<br/>Price 6.5/10

Soooo good marinated it really nicely with mince, the celery taste aren’t that strong which might be liked by ppl who doesn’t even like celery! The service was nice and patient, many noodle dishes to choose from alright overall :)

The place to go this winter... awesome soups, tasty plates. Good service and quick. The quality of the food is very good too. The saloon downstairs is a bit small, but there is more room upstairs. Dumplings in sour soup and xinjiang lamb noodles are my favourites!

Amazing food and a great atmosphere with fast friendly service. The fried noodles were delicious and the dumplings were perfect. We will be back for sure.

Recommended by Urban List and a quick meal before a movie at The Capitol, Shaolin gets a positive 3.<br/>Organized chaos, families with kids, couples and everything in-between. Bodies are pretty packed in to a few smallish spaces. Decor very random but with a vague cartoony feel and bright, very bright.<br/>Don’t go in expecting a quiet, romantic experience, but do go in expecting some terrific handmade noodles, terrific tastes and fresh fresh ingredients. It’s a huge menu but the Xijiang Lamb noodles were the favourite for the night.<br/>No wonder it’s so busy, the food is great!
Peneueta Willis
There is a reason why this place is a hit, you have a wide variety of good Asian dishes. The decor is great and I loved the quick service. Food was great nice and fresh and made to order. Will definitely be back here again

The won tons were given 5/5!!! Thats something to celebrate as we are very discerning about these morsels. Sauteed Potato Capsicum Eggplant was agreed to be the tastiest of all our dishes today. Right amount of flavours. Potatoes were a nice surprise. Pan fried dumpling were just ok, maybe in need of more flavour as we found them a bit bland. Pizza was a hit and a nice texture to the main meal. It is like a spring onion pancake that you can buy from hawker stalls (which have been the best that I have tasted). It came all torn up for you already!!! Yes, we did have some handmade noodles in a soup. It was ok with me but a fellow diner said it was great. Sensational Squid was misleading. We thought it had too much of a garlic taste and we were expecting a ‘sensation’. <br/>I have to mention the table covering of anime characters which was fun and something to look at whilst waiting for our meal to arrive. Be prepared for the self help crockery in the upstairs dining rooms. There are 190 items in the menu and we took a while to look over everything before deciding.
Christopher Pearce
The food here has some true nuggets of gold in the mix - if you get the right thing.<br/><br/>The first time I came here I ordered a dish with no flavour (cleavered noo dles with beef), and would've rated it a 3 or less. However, I was convinced to return by a friend and every dish since then has been up there with the best in Auckland. The dan dan noodles, the meilan noodles, etc are all absolutely fantastic.<br/><br/>The atmosphere leaves a little to be desired with a very unusual seating arrangement upstairs. I prefer this place for takeaway myself, for these reasons. However if you are a party of 2 it is a lot better.
Keshni Joy
Crave their chicken noodle soup when I’m sick !! Usually get my partner to pick it up for me. Also love the spring onion pancake. Need to work on customer services

Hard to be polite and friendly when your food doesnt come after an hour. Asked for ETA, said it was another 15min. Had to leave, not coming back.
Rttwofiv3
Have been here before and love the cleaver sliced beef noodle but went yest again in the hopes of having a nice meal... Waited for 50 minutes and then was asked what the order was again... And were told we would have to wait another 15 minutes for our food... Very bad service.
Chris Clark
Very nice place, very clean, the food is absolute beautiful full of flavour and delicious, I recommend this place very cheap to eat, the soups are very nice
Hasiba Zareh
I heard this place had the best noodles so I had to check it out! <br/><br/>The noodles were delicious! Nice and spicy, I also enjoyed the fried rice! The dumplings were a bit of a miss, they were very oily and when you bite into them, the juices squirt out, not very attractive lol. <br/>All the food came out in different times. <br/><br/>I really like the tables here. And the staff are really nice! Will definitely be heading back!
Ridad
I have no idea why I hadn’t visited this place earlier but the food is just YUM!!! My fav is the spicy lamb noodles. But I jave tried their dumplings and prawns and that’s been great too. Seating is limited to 4 people so if you are a big group you’ll have to wait for sometime for them to arrange this.

Came to this place because it was in the top 10 cheap eats and also because the name of this place is quite catching <br/><br/>However I was really disappointed, the noodle soup we ordered was really plain... tasted like water with a hint of salt ....<br/>What a waste of money
Sally S
This place is average and food takes some time to come out.  Noodles can be a hot or miss so basically trial and error to see which one is the best suited for your taste buds. Pan fried dumplings are also pretty good. A major plus that this place is halal.
Rosanne Choy
Had lunch at Shaolin Kung Fu yesterday.<br/>The beef burger I ordered was not as good as I thought it would be as the burger itself was very dry. The meat inside was also extremely salty.<br/>The fried noodles were better as it had tasted flavourful. Noodle strips were thick so it was able to carry out the taste of the lamb served with it.<br/>Lastly, the soup tasted quite nice although it was a bit salty.<br/>Overall, the whole restaurant was alright but just a bit salty in flavour. I would probably come again for the noodles.
Sharon Singh
Worst ever! Ordered spicy Beef noodles.. to go. Got a styrofoam container of noodles and something that looked like hot oil muddy soup. No beef! Where was the beef guys? - extremely disappointed. I heard this branch is crap .. and the one in howick is better.. Sorry but not sorry!
Tristen Won
Waited 45 minutes for a bowl of noodles, when others that came after me were slurping away their noodles. I would've walked out, if the noodles weren't so comforting. The food is the saving grace of this place.

3.5/5 Taste<br/>3/5 Display <br/>4.5/5 Quantity <br/>2/5 Customer Service <br/><br/>Chinese Restaurant similar to gogomusic<br/><br/>They have most menu you'd find at a normal chinese restaurant and same menu from gogo music aswell.<br/><br/>Their bbq sticks were pretty average, way too much Kumin spice i rekon.<br/>Chicken dish were decent quality but their sauce wasn't the best.<br/>However their deep fried eggplant in some sauce was just the killer dish.<br/><br/>Defs going back for those eggplants<br/>

Noodles are above average but other food tasted just ok. Good at prompt service though. Spicy sauce is delicious as well. Overall recommend their homemade noodles with spicy sauce.

My friend and I ordered two different dishes which basically looked the same. I can tell that this is good quality food to those who like this type of noodles but everything about it was just not what I personally liked. My friend liked the hand-pulled noodles but it just tasted undercooked to me. Every few bites I would also chew on a piece of coriander, ginger, or glob of meat fat, and I really don't like all three. The soup tasted good but was just very, very oily, so I felt a bit sick afterwards. But I think this would be a good place to eat if you're a lover of these kinds of Chinese dishes.

Yeah nah, this branch doesn't represent what Shaolin Kung Fu Noodles are really about.<br/>If you want mean noodles with huge portions, and can be bothered going out east, go to the Somerville branch ye ye

Came here yesterday for lunch and had their xinjiang lamb fried noodles. Just some background info, ive only been to the Howick branch and this is always my favourite dish and seeing that this was the original store (I think), I expected more or less the same standard for this dish. But it was just straight up horrible - it was soggy, no much veges (no cabbages at all!!), noodles seem like it was not hand-pulled (not that important but still) and overall just so different to what Howick serves!! My boyfriend ordered the same dish and mentioned mine was kinda worse than his.. won't come back here again and will be sticking to the Howick branch!! Recommend that one way more than this
Kirsten
Came here for dinner and ordered the Kung Fu Beef Noodles and friend ordered the DanDan Noodles! Food was served within five minutes, which was insanely quick! The beef was thinly sliced, nuce and tender. The noodles were so thick and had a rough texture, but it was nice. The noodles went well with the broth too! There were also some fungi, strips of tofu skin and vermicelli. A pretty cool place to dine if you're looking for cheap eats.
Ellen Zhang
Various choices there offering great and unique noodles which is called Xinjiang fried noodles. It reminds me the really traditional noodles in the north of China. Highly recommend. Easy and friendly environment for dining alone, I mean for one people:)
Grace Ko
The service is sincere and fast and the environment is perfect for a night of cheap and authentic eats. The food is great but at times a little bit oily. Overall the experience is worthwhile. Sitting upstairs in the last room also has a great feel and lookout!

Slapping a top 10 cheapest eats logo on the door is extremely misleading. Cheap should not mean inedible, but that's exactly what we had. <br/><br/>The place was surprisingly full on a Friday night. Despite a booth being free, we were dispatched to a dirty table and while we waited, another couple was ushered into the free booth. <br/><br/>We considered this rude, but decided to let it go. We should have gone instead since what we experienced was neither cheap or edible.<br/><br/>My partner ordered cashew chicken. He eats a LOT of chicken. We both agreed that what he got did not have the consistency of a fowl of any type, but foul it was indeed.<br/><br/>We also ordered a spicy beef to share. It was not spicy at all. The beef was shaved and super oily. On a cold night, the fat just congealed. <br/><br/>But worst of all was the DanDan noodles. Floury, pasty, and gluey. No broth or sauce in sight. A few teaspoons of mystery mince does not a garnish make. To me it tasted off.<br/><br/>Best thing on the menu was the tea.<br/><br/>At a total cost of over $50 for these three "meals", this place is neither cheap or cheerful. Who bribed Metro this year to keep you in their listing! <br/><br/>Eater beware!
Arianaaa
apparently they used to have tons of recommendations, so I decided to give it a try.<br/><br/>Interior was pretty interesting with really cute table tops, we were served pretty fast too.<br/><br/>Food wise,<br/>✔️ kungpao chicken was pretty delicious, recommended <br/>• cleaver sliced beef noodles were really average, the base was rather tasteless with a layer oil at the top. The noodles were their home-made specialty, however personally, I didn't like em cos they were of uneven thickness and too chewy<br/><br/>In overall, it was alright but with that kind of price, there are better ones.
Stacie Liston
The food is delicious!! I can't say this enough, everything was so moreish, packed with flavor and portions were huge. <br/>We ordered the chicken, celery and mushroom pan fried dumplings, eggplant in spicy garlic sauce, hot and spicy fried rice and the Xinjiang fried lamb noodles. I've never tasted anything like the eggplant dish - it was spicy, sweet, salty and the eggplant was so tender. We also used the dumplings to mop up the sauce - yuuuuuuum.<br/>Hands down the best fried rice I've ever had, it is spicy but not overwhelming and full of ingredients. <br/>The lamb fried noodles is the dish that we continue to come back for. 10/10. I've never had a dish like it and I'll never forget it. Absolutely fantastic food. <br/>The service is pretty scarce but the food came out quickly. Atmosphere is what you would expect, casual, busy little restaurant with funky cartoon tables. Really liked the green tea they served aswell!

I used to be a regular at this place but my last visit was so disappointing. We ordered 大盘鸡 and it turned out the potato was somewhat off, at first I thought it was just me but my mum felt the same. When we talked to the workers there, they insisted on everything being fresh and the waitress was especially rude. I took a piece of potato out for them to try but the waitress refused and said she had a "toothache". She continued saying how nothing can be done since manager said 'tis fresh and just in general the restaurant and her attitude was so rude. Will not return here again.
Kevin Lim
If you want to remain human and continue a good life I highly recommend to not come to this, in fact, for safety measures, stay a 5m distance away at all costs. My friend ordered the 大盘鸡 and the potato inside was sour. When she cut open the potato, it was clearly rotton/bad. They called the waitress to complain about it, but the waitress was very rude, claiming their food is "fresh" and that nothing was wrong with the potato. Lmao, the only fresh thing there, was her coming out fresh from the zoo. It was clearly not fresh and her attitude towards the complaint was dog. When she was asked to try it, she rudely replied "I don't have to try it, plus I have a toothache." When theres a food complaint, not only does she deny it and not do anything about it but argue back, but shes busy there scratching, waiting for some kind of tooth fairy to solve the miracle. No refunds were applied, and instead the same shietty dish came, but wow, this time the potato was actually fresh so it wasn't sour at all, hmmm I wonder why??Worst experience ever, don't come here, the service here is extremely poor and rude.

Been here so many times!! always love their noodles and dumpling!!!! my fav dumpling in mt eden lol! despite from the food, I think their service need to improve. I found some staff that not friendly enough*sad*
Biani Hoskins-Peri
Literally the best noodles and dumplings I've had in Auckland! This is a never disappoint takeaway for me! Lamb and chives dumplings are my go to and the Kung fu chicken noodles. LOVE their food
Yusoff Kamal
This is one place that you have to go to...they have plenty of food to choose from. <br/> the staff is friendly too ☺<br/><br/>I really enjoy the lamb n chives dumpling.<br/><br/>Good food and affordable price...this is the place!

Ordered - Kung Pao Chicken<br/>Chicken, Mushroom & Celery Dumpling<br/>Fried Chicken Noodles<br/>One of the worst Chinese takeaway experiences, such a disappointment. Highly overrated. All three dishes lacked flavour, no vegetables at all in the stir-fried noodles and the kung pao chicken was so sweet! (I had specifically asked for spicy). Everything was just tasteless thick floured noodles & bland chicken. Not recommending to anyone and would not go back for sure.

Saw this on an urban list to try. We walked past and there were no tables available until a couple had just finished so we quickly grabbed their table. It's not a big place but very busy. We ordered lamb and chicken kebabs. The lamb kebabs were really tasty and I could've ordered more but we ended up trying the chicken kebabs instead. The chicken kebabs were alright but just seemed to be overpowered by cumin spice. We also ordered stir fry lamb noodles and chicken with chilli. The noodles were delicious and house made so even better and the chilli chicken was nice with a good little heat of chilli and peanuts. The staff were good and friendly. The serves are big so value for money is certainly on point. Will definitely try again and try some other dihes
Riz Khan
Meat to noodle percent was 3% Told them and all the guy said was "will tell the chef". Went to grab the chopsticks, they are "washed" and put back on the table...and it was greasy at the bottom with some food stuck to it! Disgusting!

Pros:* Awesome range of Noodle soups. (I have tried all of them. Loved all of them)* Every order has been served fresh and hot.*Their in house assortment of drinks and tea range are awesome. *Their range of menu items apart from noodle soups are good as well.<br/><br/>Cons:* One of the worst and terrible customer service you will ever come across in Auckland. (The staff is quite rude with customers)* Uncomfortable seating area, seems to get really cold around winter and the staff doesn't really care about its customers to have a better ambiance.* Tables are not kept clean after previous customers are done with their meals.
Mandy C
Food is 5/5! However service is always average so hence 4/5. Noodles, rice, dumplings; every food at this place is amaaazing! Can get quite crowded and hot but all part of the atmosphere I guess.

Ambience: its a small chinese place, but its clean and neat. It does have other seats upstairs for bigger groups. The thought of our hand pulled noodles would be made inside the restaurant does gives us excitement. You could hear the chef doing it.<br/><br/>Staff: the staff did entertain us well.<br/><br/>Our group had Beef noodles, seafood noodles and beef broccoli.<br/>Flavor wise, it was wonderful.<br/>The noodles are so good and felt fresh. Its thick and chewy. We loved it. <br/>The flavor of the soup is nice. Its not bland. Its flavourful<br/>The beef with broccoli is super. But i would be bias with the fact it tasted gingery, which was a little off for me because i dont like ginger. But anyone who doesnt have a problem with a hint of ginger would find it tasty.<br/><br/>Price: A GREAT VALUE FOR MONEY<br/>serving size: Very GENEROUS.<br/><br/>Service: 4/5 the staff arent very accommodating. If you are used to being asked how you were or what you needed, youd be upset.<br/>However, I personally dont mind as long as the food is wonderful, and comes fast. <br/><br/>I would recommend this chinese restaurant to my friends. It is worth its rating.<br/><br/>

I was extremely dissatisfied by the meals we recently had at Shaolin.... I ordered the Goji Berry Lamb Noodles and never again will I set foot in this "restaurant". There was two Goji Berries, the broth tasted like vegetable stock, there were three different types of noodles(the handmade noodles were so doughy) and the lamb I wouldn't feed to my cat. <br/><br/>There was so much fat in my dish at one point all I had was lamb fat.<br/><br/>My partner asked if they could do a spicy dish with dumplings and it was just very sour and greasy.... I much preferred his dish over mine though.<br/><br/>Within hours of leaving we had sore bloated unsatisfied stomachs.... Never again Shaolin

Introduced to me over a year ago by my boyfriend, Shaolin Kung Fu has since been my go to fix for chinese food cravings. I never go wrong when I order the Beef & Noodle with spicy sauce. So consistently good! Aside from flavour, I enjoy the texture of the noodles which is, yes you guessed it, hand pulled! ;) I would also recommend having pan fried dumplings on the side. Restaurant highly recommended.
Wayne Gough
food was good although my partner got his about 5 minutes before mine , and the  staff seemed more interested in there phones and them selves rather than us. maybe as it was Sunday i dont know .
Jin Yun
Still the best noodles I've had on Dominion road and with a plethora of dishes to choose from, I'll never tire before trying one I savoured a few months back. Pan fried dumplings are also great.
Chiny Chin Chin
They used to hv extremely nice food but not now anymore. Noodles soup was super oily and salty. Didn't know why do they still have so many customers. But I wouldn't recommend this restaurant.
Briana
We came here last night in a group of 5 at around 6:30 and were lucky enough to get a table upstairs straight away. The service was perfectly fine and what I'd expect for Dominion Rd. I didn't notice that it was particularly dirty either as I've seen in some of the other reviews, but we were upstairs which felt a lot nicer. We ordered the kung Pao spicy beef noodles, lamb skewers, lamb dumplings and the cleave noodles. One of our dishes got forgotten, which was resolved without too much hassle. The noodles themselves were delicious and clearly hand-pulled, and the meat/broth of the spicy beef noodles was pretty good. Not my favourite spot on Dominion Rd, but definitely worth a visit
S&G Take Auckland
Nice beef dumplings, however the quality of the ingredients are not the best. I go for a quick eat occasionally, because it's pretty cheap.<br/><br/>Sometimes the wait can be long as there are a lot of people seated.<br/><br/>The roti style bread is really delicious with the green onion. Probably something worth trying.<br/><br/>Also the place really needs a clean, the cups seemed greasy and not washed properly.
Stevie Marino
The meat kababs were tasty so I wish I had got those or went with my gut and got the noddle soup. We got sweet & sour chicken and a lamb dish and they were very stodgy and we felt uncomfortable afterwards. If we go there again we might have to try the noddles. <br/><br/>The place could do with a thorough clean. there was soup etc. spilt down the walls where I was sitting.
AnneElizabeth Urban
Our go-to for dumplings! Quick, efficient, and everything is delicious so you can feel safe ordering almost anything off the menu. Even during busy hours the wait is never long.
Enrique Miguel
Easily my fav noodle place. Fair pricing and packed with authentic flavour and spice. I go for the kung fu spicy beef noodles with lamb kababs.
Debin Sabu
The dishes I would have from this restaurent would be the llamb noodles and the cleave noodles. The spicy beef noodles would be my fav during the winters. Need that hot spicy noodles. Been there a couple of times always prefer the lamb noodles. Tried the beef burgers for the first time it was salty. Also my mate did get the taro drink it wasn't that sweet and that was good. <br/>The restaurant also serves halal food. <br/>Must try restaurant in dominion road and there is always a buzz in the restaurant
Vinmanrules
The handmade noodles are brilliant. The food is spicy. Most dishes I've tried have been good. It's not the cleanest place to eat in my experience. And the service is hit or miss. I recommend the spicy clevered beef.
Alana
We went there at 12-ish for our Sunday lunch and had to wait quite a long time for our 2 noodle dishes. We ordered cleaved beef noodles and the spicy chicken noodle soup.<br/><br/>The cleaved noodles for both dishes are average at the most - the cut could be better with better consistency. Some noodles came in chunks while some are really nice and thin. I understand its handmade but more effort should be put in to make sure the noodles are thin so that the flavours of the soup can be soaked up by the noodles. Also, the chunks of noodles just felt like dough. <br/><br/>Flavour wise, the soup was pretty good although we've had better ones elsewhere. The beef was flavourful and there was quite a generous serving of it. As for the chicken, there were only a few miserable pieces. The whole dish had more vegetables than chicken pieces so that's really disappointing. Also, I ordered the spicy noodles but I requested for less chilli oil. However when it was served to me, the whole big bowl of soup was coated thick with oil. I had to manually scoop out the oil and dump it in another bowl. <br/><br/>Tips: unless you don't mind oily noodle soup, you might wanna order something without the chilli oil and add chilli on your own once the food is served to you. There have condiments per table so its much better.

Always come to this restaurant every Saturday mostly!! It is nice to have a reasonably priced lunch in Chinatown, aka Dominion Road. I always get their main dishes which is their hand pulled noodles. I like their braised lamb or beef noodles in a large to fill me up. The settings isn't always the best because it is always busy! The food is great and you can always park where the old warehouse is so that's a bonus! When it is full it takes around twenty minutes to get my noodles.
Roana Bilia
If you like spicy house and are a fan of dirty asian eateries with lamb kebabs this could become your new favourite. I think most of the ratings for this place are representative of its ambiance but if youre lucky to get one of these cute little comic tables then its alllll good. <br/>Go with a group so you can order a massive table of stuff - dont miss the dumplings, the cold chicken and cucumber noodles, the spicy lamb soup noodles or the lamb and cumin kebabs!
Marmite_ninja
Plenty of good reviews in here so no need to go in to detail. Food is great, we've tried a few different dishes and been impressed most of the time. Noodle dishes are to die for! Dumplings are Devine. If you go here, go to try the great food. Staff look annoyed most times and in the off chance you get a smile, check for food between your teeth! 😝
Steve Latham
Well that was a dirty little place food was OK but service and cleanliness was terrible. I wouldn't go there unless you have some cleaning products and don't touch anything. Staff will treat you like your a pain to them and I be surprised if you don't get sick
Kara Sweney
This place is not good. The staff were disinterested and unfriendly, never cracked a smile. The tables were sticky and filthy and the toilet was too. We had to ask for plates and they forgot about our dumplings which we had ordered to come at the start of our meal. Generally just a bad buzz.

When you visit a place two Saturdays in a row, you know it's good!<br/><br/>Having heard some good things about Shaolin, we decided to try it ourselves. It's a typical dominion road Chinese place, cheap, very basic but delicious food. If you enter and see all the tables full do not worry, there's plenty of space upstairs.<br/><br/>They don't serve pork but MANY lamb dishes. On the first visit we had the lamb kebabs. That's a must-order dish. DO NOT DO NOT miss this dish. Skewers of lamb perfectly cooked and with plenty of spices and the lamb flavour really shines through. <br/><br/>A few other dishes we tried-chicken kung fu noodles, braised lamb Kung fu noodles. Both came in huge bowls of flavourful broth and handmade noodles. For $12.50 it's totally worth it and we struggled to finish even on an empty stomach. The lamb one had spicy broth and perfectly cooked lamb. Chicken broth was not spicy but oh so flavourful. <br/><br/>Next time we had the lamb kebabs (there's no skipping this one) the eggplant in spicy garlic sauce. Oh so good! Garlicy, sweet and spicy and perfectly cooked eggplant pieces. The crispy beef with chilli was good as well. Plenty of beef, perfectly fried. Happy with both dishes.<br/><br/>I'm going to be a regular here, for the kebabs of course but also to try other things on their menu. Everything looks soooo good!
Ocray
Nothing worse than having lam noodle defrosted and reheated 30 seconds. <br/>Half was still very cold and the other half is very hot. <br/>I don't think this is hygienic as the meat supposed to be reheated properly. <br/><br/>And had to pay 13 dollars for that. Unbelievable
Alexandra
Heard and read great things about this place so had to check it out and it was 100% worth it. I normally go to Barilla or New Flavour but will definitely add Kung Fu place to the list now! The lamb skewers were tender and highly flavoursome so recommend. Kung Pao chicken serving was huge, but sadly not the best I've had. Chicken dumplings in spicy sauce were tender but not as hot and spicy as I would have liked but still amazing! Can't wait to go back and try more of the menu out and their famous noodles :)
Magic Bleeds
I got the Cleaver Chicken noodles & the pan fried chicken & corn dumplings. The broth was really yum & the cleaver noodles were chewy & sticky, but beware of the spice! The broth was pretty spicy that had me reaching for my drink with every second bite. The pan fried dumplings tasted divine, however it was a tad too oily.
Lia Yosaatmadja
I dont go shaolin kung fu noodles very often, although every-time i go there i always enjoy the food. I love the chewy noodles, the rich broth and the tasty skewers. <br/><br/>Their dishes are reasonably priced, and the portions are pretty substantial. Its a cheap and cheerful sort of place. The staffs are generally pretty friendly, and the meal generally comes out fairly quickly. Overall it's not a bad place to go for a quick and cheap meal.
I'm Hungry
Food taste and quality was good. We ordered kung pao chicken with bowls of rice and dumplings in sour soup. Was absolutely packed on a weeknight. But stuff still managed to finds us a place. Good Service. Will try other outlets too.
Sangyeon Won
It's a place to go to if you are craving good noodles. Good to go there during cold days for hot noodle soup to keep your self warm and full (Their quantities are HUGE!). Their hygiene isn't the best (could really improve their utensils and toilet) but great taste in food makes up for it. Recommend to order large dish of "Sensational spicy chicken with noodles" to share between 4-6 people. Possibly their best dish.
Gazza34
Unfortunately didn't have a change to even eat here. My partner and I arrive here at 8pm and we expected to wait as it's a popular spot. <br/>What we didn't expect is to wait 50 minutes while people who turned up later than us to be seated before us. It was the two of us and even though we weren't Chinese (we are NZ/Indonesian) we were constantly pushed back in the queue while we patently waited for a table.<br/><br/>In the end we had enough of the rude service we received from front of house and went to barilla dumplings across the road
Monique Porteous
Stumbled across this noodle bar while trying to find a place to grab a quick bite on dominion road, it's a really appropriate place to eat alone! 💃🏻 The service is poor - to be frank. I felt unwelcome and almost wanted to cancel my order. Regardless, there's a lot of items on the menu and they do takeaway so it's definitely a good place to grab some relatively authentic Chinese! The noodles were a tad oily but well priced 🤔. All in all this place is definitely better for takeaway!

I remember coming here late at night with a few friends. And ordered and ordinary chicken soup. So healthy and delicious obviously I couldn't finish it because there was so much.
Tony Lee
Not at all recommended!<br/>Overcharged for our order and when asked for my money back he kept arguing and did not accept his mistake and in fact said to us "never come back again"! <br/>Order is never on time and on their Facebook page everyone else has put bad reviews which is not a surprise.

Shaolin Kung Fu Noodle is an amazing place if you're looking for noodles, dumplings and all that jazz. They are mainly known for making tasty hand-pulled noodles and that is what the majority of people order.<br/><br/>I have tried a variety of hand-pulled noodles from here, such as chicken, lamb, braised beef, etc., and the noodles are always chewy and great in texture. However, the broth is sometimes lacking in taste and flavour, and the amount of meat they give you is very little, however, they are generous with the amount of noodles.<br/><br/>The dumplings are what you expect from many other Chinese eateries, and nothing from their dumpling range really stands out, however, they have better tasting and heartier dumplings than other many other places. You can also choose whether you want them boiled, steamed, pan-fried or in sour soup.<br/><br/>I have also tried the Chinese beef burger which is handmade pan-fried bread with a generous serving of marinated beef topped with coriander in between. I found this to be rather tasty despite the bread being a bit dry. <br/><br/>The prices are OK, a bit on the cheaper side, and they are very generous with noodle proportions especially if you order a large sized bowl of noodles, which I would recommend sharing between two as it may be too much for just one.<br/><br/>They generally serve you very fast after you've ordered but this place is typically packed and it may take a bit longer to get the food to you during those times, and you may have to share a table with strangers.<br/><br/>As for the environment, the place is really cramped and the tables, chairs and cutlery are dirty and overdue for replacement/renovation.<br/><br/>Overall, Shaolin Kung Fu Noodle is a must for those who want authentic hand-pulled noodles (however, the broth is lacking in flavour at times), and offers a great range of dumplings and many other tasty dishes. You can definitely fill up here on a lower budget without any compromise, for those price conscious eaters!
Winnie Luo
There are many dishes here that I will always come back for every time.<br/><br/>This place is honestly so worth it, they use great quality ingredients and serve tasty food. I have been here countless times since discovering it.<br/><br/>The noodles here are great, my personal favourite has to be the cleaver cut noodles because they are so thick and hearty.<br/><br/>The dumplings are yummy, the panfried ones are always done so perfectly and the steamed ones are also great.<br/><br/>The buns are decent, not a highlight but hearty and filling.<br/><br/>The skewers are a bit more expensive than some other places on the street but they use good quality meat, and all is seasoned and cooked well.<br/><br/>All the dishes I have tried are yummy, not phenomenal food but definitely worth your time and money!<br/><br/>Service is virtually non existent however, it doesn't bother me much anymore as long as someome takes my order and food comes out quick.<br/><br/>

We were sitting upstairs by a window overlooking the street; the table top was visibly greasy and the spoons, etc. looked not very clean.<br/><br/> Came here with others who were fans of the cleaver cut noodles with beef. Asked for this, while pointing to it on the menu. Offhand service; dish that arrived at our table was a milky soup without noodles. Explained we had been given the wrong dish; the dish was taken away without comment. We tried again to order what we wanted, and received a second dish with beef, not in soup this time, but still without the cleaver cut noodles. At this point we felt we just couldn't keep asking for the cleaver cut noodles with beef and so ate part of the second dish we were served,  but I did not enjoy it and we didn't finish it. Went downstairs and had to pay for the partly eaten dish and the strange soup dish, whatever it was, as well. Expensive considering we paid for stuff we didn't order, and all a bit random, as well as unclean.

Tried first time ever authentic chinese restaurant. Experience was not bad. Liked their chicken+mashroom+celery dumpling...awesome. tried their noodle soup and chicken kebab. Interior and service is not that good. Reasonable price.

My dear followers i can now finally say i came here for tea, and after reading all yer reviews and felt like the only donkey not been here. Was gonna go to the Queen st branch, but just happen to be in the area so chose to come to the original branch. Got here just before the 6PM peak time, all the large tables had Reserve signs on it and my waiter said will get packed soon and glad i got a seat. Had the lamb noodle soup which was average, noodle way too chunky, lamb was like fatty off-cuts, had some stringy tofu and black fungus and broth was cloudy n had a oil slick. <br/>Noodle would be better off more stringy than thick. Had a table opposite to where i can see the tradesman making the noodles too.<br/>May come back to try their other dishes later but not in hurry to now, main aim was tasting this hand made noodle first, Bye.
CrazyCatLady_EmmaC
We go Kung fu noodle all the time especially winter... Their hand pulled noodle and dumpling are amazing!! Also the Bbq skewer are a must try.<br/>Food : 4/5<br/>Staff: 4/5<br/>Cleanliness: 3/5<br/>Atmosphere: 3/5

Ordered the Kung Fu Spicy noodles with chicken. Didn't like the handmade noodles as I felt they were too chewy. And there was a another type of stringy flat noodle in there that just tasted artificial. The soup/broth was not that great either. I still want to try other dishes from this place though.

The Balmoral branch has one of the smallest and tightest space out of all the branches. When it gets busy, we did get chased off - just finished eating, no chit chatting around and asked to leave if we are not ordering anymore as there were appearantly queues. The portion is huge so great for value of money. Their noodles dishes are packed with so much noodles, could do with more meats/veges instead. Their lamb kebabs $6 for 10 pcs and the crispy fluffy spring onion pizzas ($6) are good though! Service is practically non-existant, hard to summon anyone for glass of water. When you do takeway, make sure your clearly state your order and its number on the menu - often they get your order wrong or forgot to include it in!<br/>
Nathalie
Nice and cosy noodle place, flavours are very authentic and lots of choices on menu. To be honest most Chinese eateries have similar menu and sometimes they all taste the same! Overall great place for a quick feed or cheap eats, serving is big (but not enough meat) mostly noodles. Price wise is very affordable, service is okay (if eating with a large group it's best to have one payment instead of paying individually).
Jessica Li
A few of us came here for lunch and it definitely is worth the visit. I got the spicy chicken noodles and the flavours were perfect, the portions were huge as well and it was super cheap. I also love how all the noodles are hand made :) it's a very authentic Chinese restaurant in Auckland, I rate 👍
Josh Law
I love this place! I really do! If you want dumplings or soupy noodles this is the place to be. There are lots of varieties of dumplings which are better than Barilla dumplings. Hand cleaved noodles (dao xiao mian) are out of this world good. Nice and chewy. They also do cumin lamb skewers and other bits and bobs like spicy meat dishes that will melt you eyes.
Kerryj
Came here for lunch as it was the busiest place on the block, so hoped it was a regular spot for the other diners. The menu is quite extensive and we probably should have spent more time with it but we felt pressed to give our order quickly. I ordered the lamb & fennel dumplings in sour soup and my son got the King Fu Goji berry lamb noodles (rather bland). We also ordered taro buns not realising how huge all the portions would be. <br/><br/>The couple opposite us got a really great looking dish, I had to ask them what it was - Hot and Spicy Lamb with cabbage. They said they ordered it every time they came.<br/><br/>Anyway the food came, the helpings were generous to the extreme. My son struggled and managed to finish his dish, I ate 3 or 4 of the 14 or so lamb dumplings, finished the broth and like several of the other customers, got a takeaway container for the rest. The taro buns never arrived to the table so we got them to go as well, we needed serious recovery time to contemplate eating anything more. <br/><br/>The place is truly basic, the table was wiped, though not thoroughly. The staff are pleasant enough, the pace fairly hectic over lunch at least as it is popular. I'll probably try their Albany branch next time.
Shisuo Wei
I’m going to talk about howick branch. Although the food is delicious, the staff in the restaurant were very not familiar with the menu, when asked them the detail of something, they must ask cook. And it also misunderstand my required, a noisy environment and a slow serving speed, when is want order they are cleaning the table then told me wait a second. The waiter need training if the restaurant want improve.

This place is filthy.  If the owners read one thing on this review, it's that you need to get some hot soapy water and give the place a damn good scrub!  There is no excuse for having your customers sit in a filthy restaurant, none.<br/><br/>Service, the guy at the till had a permanent death stare on his face and treated me like an inconvenience.  I would like a smile when I'm being served, I don't care if it's a scared chimpanzee smile, any smile will do.<br/><br/>Food,  for the most part was quite tasty, we had the Lamb & Carrot dumplings, Kung Fu Chicken Noodle soup, Fried Chicken and the Lamb fried noodle.  The Kung Fu Chicken Noodle was very bland, needed a serious kick of flavour.<br/><br/>It's a place I'd be prepared to get takeaways from, I would not eat in again.  If I compare this place to Barilla though, there's really no comparison.

Had kungfu chicken noodle and spring onion .Portion is quite big . Fast service and staff members are friendly. The food here does give a feel like home as most noodles are home made noodles. I would recommend you to come but if you don't each much , you would prefer to share with your friends :)

Well.. its not bad.. But it's not great... Would I eat it again? Yes of course!<br/><br/>Good value for money if you are after something near the $10 mark. <br/><br/>Certainly better than the dragon noodle place across the road.<br/><br/>Food Quality: 3.5/5<br/>Food Quantity: 3.5/5<br/>Environment: 3.5/5<br/>Wait time: 3.5/5<br/>Price Range: $20pp

Visited there for the first time, and they screwed my order, didn't get my order after asking them twice, and had waited for an hour. They certainly was not lack of staff but staff rather stood next to the cashier table and did nothing than asking us (we sat close to the cashier table) if we got all our ordered food, people who came after us already got their food. They apologized to us, and gave drinks for free, but certainly will not return there again. Food was ok, not above my standard.

Attended this restaurant early sat evening.....The food was good we enjoyed it ...the prices are about average.....But the service is about what you could expect in a japanese prisoner of war camp......The staff and management need to understand who it is that makes them there profit......The all important customer!!!!!!!!!!!

Recommend this dish. Cooked with wide and thick handmade noodle, potatoes and chickens. A little bit spicy but tasty and reasonable price. Serving size is also lovely, enough for two people for a regular meal.

We've tried Shaolin Kung Fu Noodles a few times at the Albany branch. First time at the Balmoral branch.<br/><br/>* Delicious handmade noodles, and cumin chicken<br/>* Wide selection<br/>* Can be quite spicy<br/>* Reasonable priced<br/>* Cleanliness and service can be improved

The popularity of this place can be it's own worst enemy at times despite seating upstairs and on the ground. The atmosphere is busy, and it isn't fine dining, but there is no other place with a more extensive, fresh, flavoursome, affordable menu- one of Auckland cities true gems :)

Very bad service. <br/>I went to both Dominion Road and Queen Str shops. Very unfriendly service in both restaurants. Probably because I spoke Chinese when ordering and paying the bills. <br/><br/>In Queen Str shop, the female staff wanted to pull my table to the left side, so the table on my right side could have more space. Instead of asking politely, she just pulled my table while I was eating my noodle. The soup was spilled a little bit and I was like ... WTF ... Instead of saying sorry, she just said the table on the right side need some space (because new guests just came) and then walked away. Very rude !!!<br/><br/>The food was OK (typical north Chinese cuisine), but with that kind of service, I will not come back anymore.

Love this place, probably go here most regularly out of all places. Pretty sure the place is an old flat as you can go upstairs and sit in different rooms but its pretty rad. Go with a small group and order a lot and it still works out to be cheap.<br/><br/>Must try<br/>Xingjang Lamb Fried Noodles (sooo yum)<br/>Panfried Dumplings<br/>Cucumber Salad<br/>Spring Onion Pizza

Twice in a row now I've been over charged here, and only through standing at the counter counting up the prices have I realised. The staff both times have been unapologetic, so even when the food is good, the rude staff and worry about being ripped off leaves a bitter taste in your mouth, so check your bill!!!

Like the food, but wast clean enough, may be to busy.I like hand made noodle soup! Always busy and crowed,Hand made noodles def taste better Wide variety of food for everyone!,

The Chinese lamb Burger is a must try and you can't go wrong by ordering any of their Noodles - which are made fresh. The portion sizes are huge and I always end up taking away at least half my meal for the following day. The only down side is that it gets really busy and you have to wait sometimes.

My Recommendation: Avoid this place if you prefer <br/>1: Good Customer Service.<br/>2: Hygienic Environment and Utensils.<br/>3: Clean Waitress.<br/><br/>I was surprised to see the customer service of a waitress. If you prefer a clean house, the moment you visit a messy house you will feel uncomfortable. the same situation is over here.<br/><br/>As soon as we entered the restaurant, we saw mixed crowd, which was nice to see people from all walks of life enjoying their meal. since we were 3 people, we chose to go upstairs. there were only 2 seaters available downstairs. <br/><br/>We asked if we could go upstairs. The look we got from the waitress was beyond my imagination., as if "i have committed a crime". <br/>in my entire life i have never seen a grumpy and rude waitress. no smile or welcome at all.<br/>we asked for plate, we were told go and fetch yourself, we were given a saucer plate. <br/>we asked for spoon, we were give a plastic spoon which could not take the weight of chicken, it was so thin and light.<br/>the plastic glasses were full of stains.<br/>there were piles of dishes lying on the walkway.<br/>the food was hot and sour chicken, it felt like sweet all the way.<br/><br/>the worst part, i saw the same grumpy waitress, surfing her mobile with her thumb and the next moment scratching her head. soon she came with food for another customer and her fingers and thumb were touching the dish.<br/><br/>i am sure people go there with good faith, but AVOID IF YOU CAN, <br/>if you have a strong stomach, can withstand dirty utensils, worst grumpy  and dirty waitress. then you  are at the right place for an unhygienic Chinese food experience.

I've been here several times now. I have nothing but good things to say about this place. Food is absolutely delicious, especially the different types of noodles (made in house). I can never go wrong with the Kung Fu Noodle soup. Another standout dish is the Sensational Spicy Chicken (Should be shared) with an extra helping of noodles. Their dumplings are also quite nice and can give a place like Barilla a good run for their money. <br/><br/>The only thing that stops them from getting a 5.0 score from me is that they do take a while to take your order sometimes and could be left sitting for a while. Also I mentioned that their dumplings are nice, however sometimes they take a while to come. Other than that, brilliant place to chow down!!!

Shaolin is a nice place when you're wanting a heartier Chinese meal.<br/><br/>Had previously tried the sensational chicken, shredded chicken with cold noodles and the steamed lamb and chive dumplings.<br/><br/>Food here is moderate in comparison to the Somerville branch. The cold noodles lacked the sour touch, and the steamed dumplings were a bit dry, with the dumpling wrap being dry and chewy.<br/><br/>I definitely prefer the Somerville branch where the food seams a bit more lovingly prepared.
Sheena
I have been to Shaolin Kung Fu Noodle a few times! It is always so full! I love the cleaver sliced chicken noodles and the beef one as well! These noodles are made in house and you can see them do it behind the counter on the first level! They also have choices for small and large portions, small is always good enough for me but large is about $1 more... So I usually get large and I never finish my meal. I haven't really tried many other dishes here because I can't get over how good the cleaver noodles are! <br/><br/>Service is super average, but can't really expect much! The food and the price is what brings people back!

We had a quick lunch here yesterday. As a group of four,we had cold gold mushroom, spicy beef and tripes, cold jelly and three bowls of different sorts of noodles. To be honest, spicy beef and tripes is something I believe you can never go wrong with in any Chinese restaurant, but here the dish is so plain. Gold mushroom also lacks flavour. As for the noodles,I had a bit of my boyfriend's sliced lamb noodles which is nothing stand out to me. BF agreed saying the noodles did not live up to his expectations.
Gentlepig
Freshly back from a holiday in Tokyo - where I consumed a never-before-seen amount of food but somehow lost weight (what?), I decided that I needed a fix of Chinese. Gentlepig and his darling girlfriend decided to visit Shaolin Noodles, which is one of our favourite (if not favourite) Chinese noodle bars in Auckland.<br/><br/>The Kung Fu noodles here are hand made in house and is definitely the star of the show. We are both regulars, and have tried most of the menu before so my recommendation is: get the spicy if you dare. Shaolin's non-spicy broth is very clear, very pure yet at times a tad bit bland for our taste (still a great broth though). I've dined here with larger parties before - and the shared plates are well above what you'd expect from a casual eatery. My favourite dishes are the stir fried spicy cabbage (sounds much tastier than the name would suggest) and the spicy pulled lamb (there seems to be a trend of spice here...).<br/><br/>Overall, an excellent spot for a quick, super tasty yet cheap dinner. If you love your Chinese and don't want to make a big fuss of dinner - come here! One gripe; dumplings, while freshly made and I suspect made in-house are not of the quality that other establishments can bring to the table.

To me the interior looked below average. Staff seemed quite disinterested, no smiling faces. We ordered for Kung Fu Fried Chicken noodles and chicken dumpling (spicy sauce). We were quite impressed with the food, sply the dumpling ( ended up ordering it again). Bottomline, I would return for a takeaway in the future...not dine-in. Price is reasonable
Eat It Auckland
Despite the recent bursts of beautiful weather hinting at summer, the wet weather gods have been defiantly battering us with wind and rain. And so it was that my friend Sigourney and I found ourselves on a cold, wet and rainy day in the heart of Balmoral’s dumpling precinct. But we weren’t here for those delicious (and ever so often dirty) morsels. We were in search of spices to warm the palate and a bowl of hand-pulled noodles to soothe our souls.<br/><br/>Shaolin Kung Fu Noodles occupies the corner of Dominion Road and Rockland’s Avenue; a narrowish walk way that is the dining room is lined on either side with tables and wooden booths, of which the latter’s tables are adorned with vibrant cartoon collages. Over the smoked-out glass divider, diners can watch the chef as he throws a thick rope of dough into what will eventually be the best bowl of hand-pulled noodles in town.<br/><br/>Whilst lamb is a rare feature on most Chinese menus in Auckland, Kung Fu’s menu shows the influence of the Muslim population of northern China with their lamb skewers piqued with spices and Chinese lamb burgers. Nose-to-tail eating is another prominent feature on the menu here, with a large number of offal dishes on offer; no chicken’s heart or gizzard has been left to waste here. But vegetarians fear not! You will be looked after just as well here with a number of tofu and vegetable dishes to suit.<br/><br/>After perusing the menu several times over, I plumped for the Kung Fu Spicy noodles ($9.80 for small, $10.80 for large) and one order of the Chinese lamb burger ($5), whilst Sigourney settled on the cleaver-sliced beef noodles ($10 for small, $11 for large). Both our orders were nothing short of impressive. Each bowl was a generous entanglement of wide, flat noodles with an unctuous chewiness I’ve yet to savour in other noodle dishes. Thin ribbons of bean curd and bean thread noodles lent different textures to the soup, whilst the broths themselves were both unique to each of our dishes and deeply soothing. Mine was a richly flavoured stock permeated with coriander spice and decently hot (as indicated by the foreboding slick of red chilli oil floating in my soup) whilst Sigourney’s was a subtler but still flavoursome bowl of the purest beef essence. My Chinese lamb burger was a pleasant surprise: a thick toasted pita bread with a warm yeasty aroma filled with slices of braised, cumin-rich lamb, chopped peanuts and fresh coriander, with the overall effect being the perfect, hand-held snack of spice and crunch. The bread was stained rusty red with chilli oil but its heat was relatively imperceptible, so chilli-phobes may rest easy when ordering this dish.<br/><br/>If these few dishes are representative of what Kung Fu’s kitchen has to offer, I’ll be returning to sample the numerous other noodle soups and the more unusual dishes on the menu. But maybe not the chicken gizzard.

We tired this place, I don't eat a lot of real Chinese, but was pleasantly surprised. The setting is small restaurant but like all the good ones is really busy. Fast fresh food, that tastes good

Love this place!! Perfect for winter nights.<br/>The service is always good and they always get my order right.<br/>Good - Kung fu Hot and spicy beef noodles - MUST TRY, Dumplings are delish too<br/>Bad - nothing really..

Greasy, carb heavy and delicious, this is not a place I could visit often.  However, the food is tasty and the restaurant doesn't purport to be something it's not.  We had the chicken dumplings (steamed), spicy lamb soup with hand pulled noodles and kung pao chicken.  It was busy so we got the food to takeaway.  It was tasty, although the kung pao chicken was a little on the sweet side for my liking. Generous servings and easy on the wallet.  You won't be left hungry.

Great value, Fried cumin lamb was spicy and fragrant, the Pan Fried Fish meat dumplings delicate and delicious. Also had the handmade Kung fu lamb noodles which very tasty<br/>

My regular. Great spicy beef noodle soup!!! Service is expectedly poor, but with many of these asian places you pay for good portion delicous meals, not the service.
Adam Kerr
This is our regular when we want to eat out. The spicy beef noodles are our favourite. You have to try the vermicelli filled buns, although they are very filling, almost a meal on their own! This place is also halal and serves no pork, so that's a bonus! <br/><br/>Give it a go! but if your expecting perfect service, your dreaming. This is Balmoral, not ponsnobby :)
Lisa V
This place has become a new regular for me as it is one of the places my mum really likes. My mum's fav is the lamb & goji berry noodles and the lamb sticks. My favourite's are the sweet and sour potato, the chicken & corn pan fried dumplings and the coconut sago drink. The food is really good. It's quite a small place and can be hard to find a table which is a bit of a downside.

Same as the Albany one except the place is like a sauna. <br/>Older restaurant. Someone open a window. <br/>Sensational chicken is my recommendation and the garlic eggplant

noodles was delicious...my family often visit and try different kind of noodles and the different style of cooking method, affortable price...shop is in clean n tidy as compare to other chinese cuisine restaurant..<br/>would recommend for noodles lover as i do so, it halal as well... no pork in the restaurant.

Really enjoyed the noodles here. A big bowl which was very filling and cheap. Have yet to try the dumplings but will be back soon to test them out.

My friend loves the noodle soups from this place- big hearty portions and flavourful broth appeases anyone! That being said, while the dishes are cheap, there's not much meat or vegetables in there (you're mainly getting noodles) so it's more of a quantity over quality kind of meal. Their dumplings are delicious- one of my preferred versions on Dominion Road because the wrappers are nice and thin, not thick and doughy like most places. <br/><br/>You're not going to get a nice interior here, it's pretty outdated and the upstairs resembles someone's house in the way it's laid out. Service is also pretty absent as per usual of Asian restaurants, and they're not very accommodating when they get your order wrong either. Come here with a big group to make the experience fun as you get to order masses of food for really reasonable prices so it's great for sharing.<br/><br/>Sarah Reynolds #challenge

I just finished work and wanted to avoid the hectic traffic so I thought I would grab something to eat nearby. <br/>Shaolin is located on busy Dominion Rd with a lot of competing restaurants but stands out with it's corner location and neon lights. <br/>The store has a buzzing ambience and quirky decor. Like a mix between traditional Japanese with its separators and utensils and modern anime with it's table tops. <br/>The food here comes out fast and piping hot. The portions are huge and you get so much value for what you pay. <br/>The staff are polite and efficient. <br/>I ordered the Chicken Wonton Noodle Soup because I couldn't make up my mind between Noodles and dumplings. The dumplings were soft and generously filled and the soup was well balanced. I like this place a lot but they could wipe down the tables more thoroughly and improve their customer service, otherwise it's amazing.

came here as a recommendation from my sister.. small space and really busy .. order was fast and I loved the beef noodles.. the skewers were also very tasty and the dumplings good..

I've always been amazed at how packed this place is virtually every night. Tonight despite being cold and rainy, the place was completely packed. Infact, my friend and i occupied the last table. Shaolin Kung Fu Noodle looks tiny from the outside, but there's plenty of seating upstairs in little rooms. <br/><br/>The menu is extensive and there's bound to be something that sounds interesting enough for everyone. Tonight I had the Spicy Kung fu braised lamb noodle and my friend had the Kung fu chicken noodle soup. We both agreed the lamb noodle dish was superior - the hand pulled noodles are delicious. Verrrrryy yummy. I'd highly recommend you double check the noodles before ordering. <br/><br/>Only let down - the service. Super awkward trying to figure out where to order. I walked downstairs and they told us they'd come up and take our order. Yet no one came for at least another 10 minutes. Food was also served to a few tables that came and ordered after us first. <br/><br/>Food is definitely worth trying though. Cheap and cheerful. <br/><br/>
Rebecca
A small, buzzing atmosphere. The restaurant is always busy when I come but it does not take long to be seated and served. The hand pulled noodles are absolutely delicious and the soup compliments it perfectly. The cucumber salad was a bit average for its price, but the noodles were extremely filling and I always walk out with a full belly! However it is a bit disappointing that the utensils and tables are not always clean.

4 words Kung Fu Spicy (Beef)<br/>Such a gr8 timeThere's usually enough room and you won't often be waiting for tables, I haven't really tried a lot of other stuff there but I'm always checking out what the Chinese folks have at their table, usually looks pretty good. I'm all about the Kung Fu though as that's the name on the door, their hand pulled noodle dishes include their own hand made noodles, as well as a few other types all mixed together.  It's just as much fun eating is it is trying to find all the hidden gems inside the bowl.  A cheap delicious winter feed.  I'd watch out for the table condiments though, they always seem to smell a bit suspect.

This place is a must visit for an experience of traditional chinese food, I had the kung pao chicken and lamb and chives pan fried dumpling. The food came out it no time and tasted amazing. Although the seating dosen come across too appealing the food is well worth is.

Went here on a Saturday night with a few of the boys, hungry azz we ordered big and we were not disappointed!, that chilli chicken hit the spot.<br/>Good pricing also for the dish size.

I was there for diner tonight for the first time after a friend referred me to this restaurant. Very standard / cheap sort of themed Asian deco, small cozy downstairs seating area with every table filled with people. Service was real quick.<br/><br/>They specialise in hand made noodles, which is sort of a thick and chewy noodles. We had a beef noodle and a sour lamb noodle. Well it was a bit too oily for my taste. When it came the top was floating with a thick transparent coat of oil (as seen in photos). If you don't mind oil that's fine. But I do when there's a lot. Soup was average. Couldn't drink it it was too oily.<br/><br/>It was a shame that the beef noodle didn't have much beef in it, all of the pieces were diced quite small to the point that was hard to be picked up with a chopstick, let alone finding it in the soup. The sour lamb noodle had much bigger and pieces.<br/><br/>The noodles were ok.... we also make the same type of noodle at home very often, so it's not new to me..... Some of the noodles weren't cooked through 100% because there were still bits of 'white floury' bits in the middle.<br/><br/>Proportion was big, good for the value of money. But would have enjoyed it if there was less oil in the soup. I enjoyed my experience overall.<br/><br/>

Located in Dominion road, this place always seems to be busy! Me and my foodie partner ordered the Kung Pao Chicken and the Lamb and Fennel pan fried dumplings. The chicken dish was spicy and quiets tasty! The dumplings are really popular here but for me they weren't anything special. The prices are a little more than your average on Dominion rd but the portions are decent. <br/><br/>

Try any of their hand pulled noodles - perfect texture. New on their menu: dumplings with spicy sauce - also really good (sauce is a mix of sesame oil, chilli oil, something sweet, and other various things). Also enjoyed the chicken with noodles (not sure what it was called) but it's served in a large sharing dish with chickeny potatoey gravy goodness. I think their menu / prices have recently been updated, but still good value at around $11 per bowl of noodles. Atmosphere can be described as compact, busy, cute, themed. Only problem I've had with this place is the tea; you have to ask for it. Once a waiter told my partner to go downstairs and get it; then the person downstairs didn't understand what he was asking for and there was no where for my partner to serve it himself. Another time, after asking for tea I was served luke warm tea/water. Tea top ups are not easy to get as the waiters are usually too busy to notice you flagging them down once you have already made your order.
Lonalin08
the noodle is good and I like the grilled lamb most . The spicy chicken with potatoes are also nice. Remember to add noodle in the spicy chicken which will be really good <br/>
David C
Cheap and cheerful. You don't go for the decor or the service. I loved their egg plant dish. Chicken and cashew nuts alright - nothing special. Not a big Noodle fan so can't comment on that 😀 Will go back again to try other dishes.
Bevan Chuang
This is not the cleanest restaurant, with very tight spaces, and not the best services. However the noodles are made on the spot and this place is run by Hui ethnic group so it is Halal friendly and no pork at all! (And hence you can't bring any food from outside either) If you have friends who are Muslim and wanted to try Chinese food, this is very safe and very rare. I like coming here not only because I don't eat pork and I do feel like I am treated like a regular. They just leave you alone and you help yourself with water and drinks. It is super busy so don't expect to find a seat everytime.
Oliver Logan
Had lunch before movie at Capitol yesterday.  Thought I would try the Beef Kung Fu based on reputation.  Maybe I am unco, but actually eating the meal proved almost impossible.  The noodles, as famous as they are, are incredibly slippery.  It was a splash fest.  Meat looked suss.
P L
Very busy eatery - high turnover rate, however food is always served quickly (within 10-15 minutes of ordering). The noodles are pretty good, but personally would definitely not order dumplings again for sure. Table prints are cute. May notice a soy sauce/ vinegar splatter or two - the staff do their best but as I wrote earlier the place is so busy + such high turnover rate so its understandable.
Sophia O-W
I come here quite often for a quick, cheap eat. With a good portion of food to share, Kung Fu Noodle has a great variety of food to try within the extensive menu. In this visit I had the kungfu seafood noodle soup (one of my favourites), and the lamb and chives dumplings (steamed). The service is very efficient, when not too busy. I would recommend having the chicken paprika skewers, and definitely try something noodle based as they make them on the spot! Delicious and fresh! Try to come before the dinner rush around 7pm :)
Chin And Prony Powichitkul
Unlike most people who come here for the noodles, I actually like the dumplings and skewers here more which is my only reason for going back each time. Dumplings are steamed well with nice choices of dipping sauce. The noodles on the other hand, used to be a lot more better but from recent visits, the broth seems to taste the same for all meats- as if they boil their meat in the same pot- chicken noodles soup tasted like lamb etc. not good for people who doesn't eat lamb or for vegetarians/vegans.<br/><br/>As expected of most Chinese eat outs, this is a noisy, cramped little food joint that seems to only cater for Chinese people. Don't get me wrong but the fact that from waiters to kitchen staff, no one seems to have a basic understanding of English-as if they never really expect any other people to come here other than Chinese people. This is probably why service from them is quite limited but then again they do get really busy that they're running around and unable to attend to you. <br/><br/>As for hygiene- not the best but this is expected of these little food joints. Greasy table and sauce trays that seems like they never get replaced/cleaned. Cutlery that did not seem to have been washed well. <br/>But you really can't complain if you do choose to eat from here. The food are priced so cheap and so they don't seem to want to take any complaints from you. <br/><br/>In conclusion, 3points purely just for the dumplings and skewers.
Kwan-Lyn
Heard a lot about this place so I finally tried it out. The menu is quite interesting and foreign to me so I usually just go with what I know is good. Strong beef and lamb broths at this place don't always go down well with me as I often find the taste too distinct. Would recommend the Xin Jiang lamb noodles (if you like cumin) and the fish dumplings.

Go upstairs if you do not like the 'oily' feeling near the stoves/kitchen.<br/>Noodles are obviously their specialty. Well made and prepared. Delicious.<br/>Been here 5 times. Always yummy food.

Awesome place. Nice atmosphere with their funky tables. Huge selection of various dishes. Helpful staff. Been many times. Worth a look.

Dissapointed. <br/>Bad service, rude staff. <br/>I ordered take aways in the restaurant, the front of house was unfriendly and I received the wrong food ,which as it was take aways I only noticed when I got all the way back to my house. I have been a couple of times before this experience and received the wrong food several times. The soup was ok but I found the dumplings ineddible as I can't eat fennel. <br/>Not going back. <br/>
Joe Orsborn
Waited a long time for Pan Fried dumpling.  When the waiter noticed it wasn't on the table 15-20 mins later he darted for the kitchen to push the order through.  Unfortunately everyone else had finished eating by then and when I showed up at the counter the Dumplings showed up. Rather then tell the truth there was a lie that these dumplings take time to cook... 30 minutes must be some Golden Dumplings. Don't lie to me and I payed for them anyway. Have a One on me.

<br/>This place is a very busy Chinese restaurant, so don't expect it to be squeaky clean. A little difficulty in communicating with the staff (other than ordering straight from the menu by pointing) as whenever I was there, there wasn't anyone who could speak fluent English. I've also made a takeaway order for 4 people over the phone in the past and it was a big fail.<br/><br/>I usually go for Small Kung Fu Beef Noodles ($10). Their thin & wide noodles are quite unique and the Lamb Kebabs ($1.20ea) are nice also. Been here few times now but it seems like they are using more and more MSG in their food everytime I dine in - up to the point where I can feel that salty, burning sensation after I had their food which stops me from going back there more regularly.<br/>
Wakachangi
Food is cheap and tasty. Lamb and chive dumplings as well as lamb and chive dumplings (fried) is the way to go! <br/>At times, service can take a while. The toilets are kept really clean and the staff are friendly enough.

I love the lamb and goji noodles. When I'm feeling cold and sad they make me feel better. Also enjoy the fungus salad. There's more seating upstairs BTW, downstairs fills up v quick!

Heard from my friend that they have good reviews, so went to there with my friend.<br/>I had a beef&noodles with spicy sauce, which is a really basic noodle in China especially in my hometown (I came from Shannxi), and a cold dish of smoked beef with soy sauce.  My friend had a stir fried chicken with veg.<br/>The noodle itself was ok but the flavour was bad, maybe 2.5 out of 5. My friend's chicken was ok as he told me. But the cold dish of smoked beef was really really bad, must been cut and stay their for too long, not only too dry but taste disgusting, we left maybe 90% over and didn't take away .  I will not go there again.

At first glance, the ambience was very reminiscent of noodle shops in Shanghai: cramped, stuffy and noisy. We were given a table on the second floor, and boy it was so stuffy. Zero ventilation and the wall fans weren't much of a help. Probably wasnt that great an idea to have piping hot noodles in 25 degree weather!<br/><br/>Kungfu goji berry lamb noodles (large - $12) - the cleaver cut noodles were absolutely delicious! Al dente and had just the right bite. Soup was very flavourful and the goji berries gave a whole new depth to the soup. Did not try any lamb meat as I'm not a big fan of lamb. <br/><br/>Kungfu Beef noodles  (large - $11) very yum, noodles were the same type as the lamb noodles. Excellent with a spoonful of their chilli on each table (be warned, its very very potent, so a small spoonful will do). <br/><br/>Kungfu chicken noodles - will never order this again. The noodles were yum, ramen style but was a bit too soft for me. the chicken was just shredded and dumped onto the soup, and there was too little veggies. The soup was very plain tasting. I regret ordering this dish after I saw my dining companions' dishes.<br/><br/>Dumplings (14 - extra dollar for steamed) - excellent fillings, but the dough was too thick. Best eaten immediately when served, after a few minutes the dumpling skin gets even more tough. <br/><br/>Service: service was definitely not the best. We arrived a good 15 minutes earlier than the other table in the room and their dishes were served first. I think they forgot our order as they had to check with us what our order was again. The staff do not check up on tables on the upper level often, so had to help ourselves to extra bowls and cups.<br/><br/>Overall: Despite their less than average service, I would be back again as their food was pretty yum. Extremely affordable for such huge portions, and plenty of parking on the side streets. <br/>thegrapefruitfoodie.wordpress.com

Worst service ever but the food so good I always put up with being treated like crap lol. the hand pulled noodles are seriously the bomb and the burger and the cucumber salad and chicken hearts are also super good. I am normally not a fan of noodle dishes but theirs are so good, I always go back for more emotional abuse just to eat them noodles. Love the noodles.

This is my favourite Chinese cheap restaurant in Auckland. I found it 4 years ago by chance, following the delicious smell of their lamb skewers, and it never stopped being my favourite cheap eat since. It is a very authentic cheap Northern Chinese restaurant, when I go there, I feel like I'm back in Beijing. Besides the lamb skewers, the home-made noodles are a must. Try anything, you won't be let down. It's all incredibly tasty.

One of my favourite places to feast along Dominion Road. If you're in the mood for authentic,  spicy and delicious hand-pulled noodles then you need to check this spot.  Their Kong fu meilan beef noodles, Chinese lamb burger and lamb kebabs are  personal favourites. The restaurant does get packed at times so the service is a bit slow - just be patient as the food is always worth the wait!

When I lived on Dominion Road I would go to this place every second night. As a Caucasian, it took me a couple of visits to become convinced but once you have those thick hand pulled noodles in the spicy beef soup on the right night - you just can't beat that. You can't find Chinese noodle soup this good anywhere else that I know of.<br/><br/>The lamb dumplings are also great. As are the spicy lamb fried noodles. Anything with lamb, basically. I think they have some kind of an Islam-bent or something (unusual for China) but yeah - they treat lamb with respect and it seems to be where they really shine. Menu is way too long though. I'm sure there's plenty of stuff which is not particularly great that's on there.<br/><br/>And finally - an issue several others seem to have broached is service. The environs is hardly too charming in the first place (I can live with that on D road) but it's indifferent at best and downright rude at worst. I don't know what their problem is. I've noticed the branch in town doesn't seem to be doing too well. Not too hard to figure out why. I went there a couple of months ago when they were quiet and they completely stuffed up my takeaway order. It wasn't a mix up - they just hadn't bothered to clarify my order properly. It'd be a real shame to see this place go. I think it's unique and really delicious. I'd probably give it a 5 if the service was friendly. Buck it up, guys,

Shaolin Kungfu Noodles is typical of many of the eateries populating Dominion Road - utterly nondescript, gaudy lighting and signs... and wonderfully amazing authentic food. <br/><br/>We've been here many a time over the past couple of years that we've spent in Auckland, but this time they seem to have underwent a bit of a makeover - for the better. The floor and walls look newly-refurbished, the tables are very clean, and the toilet is finally decent! They've kept the best part of the shop, too - the glass wall behind which kungfu stunts are performed on the handmade noodles (well, not really, the noodles are just pulled and thrown around a lot, but I always like to imagine that's where they got their name from).<br/><br/>And the handmade noodles are a joy to behold indeed, as they always are. They are thick and uneven (a testament to being hand-pulled rather than machine-cut) and delightfully chewy. There are literally scores of noodle dishes to choose from - go for the ones that have the term 'kung fu' in them, as that is their signature noodle. <br/><br/>The Kung fu goji berry lamb noodles ($11) are my favourite, and I simply can't bring myself to order anything else each time we visit. It comes with lamb, goji berries, dates, black fungus, and some yellow strips whose origin I have no idea about but taste good. The broth is heavenly, probably the second best part of the dish after the noodles. The lamb does take a bit of getting used to, as these aren't the prime cuts that would be served in nice restaurants - but at $11 I'm certainly not complaining. The bf had the Kung fu spicy braised lamb noodles ($12) this time - it was pretty good, but a bit too oily for my tastes.<br/><br/>The service is pretty much what you would expect from a budget Asian eatery - which is to say it exists just to ensure that good food gets served to your table, and not much else. Really though, just go for the noodles - you won't regret it.

Outstanding Northern Chinese style cuisine - the way Chinese takeaway food ought to be in the first place, especially during a night out. This is proper fusion food between the middle and far east that leaves other so called 'fusion cuisine' to shame. However.... just be prepared to meet the snobbiest, most stuck-up waiter man (or boy actually) in existance!!! Minus 2.5 out of 5 points for this....

Very packed on a sunday but managed to get seatings upstairs for two ppl. Ordered boiled fish (de boned) in chilli soup, chicken chilli and seafood dumblings. Very nice, tasty

Randomly went here for lunch yesterday with my boyfriend after walking past. Young male waiter was extremely rude and would not give us a bigger table because he said it was reserved when clearly it was not (there were only a few other people in the restaurant.) Ordered chilli chicken and lamb fried rice. Chicken was pre deep fried and covered in salt with about three cups of chilli on top and no sauce, it was disgusting! Fried rice was bland and greasy. We paid about $30 for these two dishes and were extremely disappointed. We felt the standard of food was very poor and the staff really need to work on their customer service. We will definitely not be returning here.

Go here often for takeaway, bit small and cramped but the fact that there is always lots of people means something :)<br/><br/>I try the Chinese lamb burger, which can be very strong of cumin, which I like, and I always want to try something else but end up going with the sautéed spicy chilli chicken every time,<br/><br/>Has a lot of chilli in it, but I eat round most of that as the flavour is great, <br/><br/>Wish I knew how to make it,

I love this place, come here quite often. I am surprised by the bad reviews, especially regarding the service, who dines at an authentic Chinese restaurant expecting good service?<br/>It's like going to McDonald's expecting a fine dining experience.<br/><br/>I particularly love the "Sensational Chicken", it is so flavoursome and for me a real comfort food meal. It truly is sensational.
Anthony
If your not a mandarin speaker don't count on getting served anytime soon after seating yourself here no matter how much eye contact you make at the waitstaff. If you are however a mandarin speaker, you can place an order at your will. The far busier (and more famous) locations across the road are that way for a good reason.

Well it is interesting to read the "awful" and low-rates reviews for this place because this place is actually one of the best Chinese-Asian style restaurants in whole Auckland for that price. I have tried so many other ones, Chinese, Vietnamese, etc and they are not so tasty and elaborated. It is like being in Asia. I come over around 2-3 times per month.<br/><br/>Dumplings, soups, fried noodles, skewers, anything is so yummy.<br/><br/>I have the feeling that most of the low-rate reviews are coming from Kiwis/Western people without any sense of taste of food who usually eat pre-cooked food and takeaway. I mean when you eat any dish you get the feeling that is hand-made and properly cooked.<br/><br/>European in love with Kung Fu noodle!!!

Went to this terrible place for lunch thinking the food and service would be reasonably good. It was 2 of us, we ordered Chicken with spicy sauce, chicken fried rice, chicken, mushroom and chives dumplings and couple of drinks. The food was too oily and bland, the spicy chicken was not at all spicy without any sauce, it was rather sweet with lots of whole dry chilli on top. We asked the waiter for spoons to eat fried rice and he told us to have it with soup spoon. Really? Eating rice with big deep soup spoons? We asked him again to provide us normal spoons and he said we only have plastic spoons that they use for takeaway lol. We hadn't even sat for half and hour and were still eating our lunch when the same waiter came and asked us to hurry up as someone is waiting for the table. Very rude!!!! We saw around there were no one waiting and the restaurant was almost half empty. Well, we just decided to take away the food, pay and never come back again. The guy at the counter was quite rude as well, no thank you, no smile, no eye contact. We paid around $55.00 (2pax) for this disgusting place.

Unsure how Metro magazine rated this as Top 10 Cheap Eats. Everything was either very bland or very spicy. The stir fry chicken was grey with a glaze on it - inedible. The lamb skewers did not taste like lamb at all - some other dark meat, slightly worrying. The only good thing was the sago coconut milk drink.

I ordered chicken noodle soup it looked not fully cooked and was very rare as i could see some blood and pink flesh but staff kept on insisting its safe to eat. waited long time too. Jan 2014. [Add] Visited here after 4 years. Pretty good noodles. Good friendly staff. Food wasn't amazing but good for the price.

Went there for lunch yesterday, ordered hand pulled lamb noodles and egg &amp; fennel dumplings. The noodles were good. Waited ages for the dumplings, when they finally came, more than half were broke and the lose filling covered the plate. It was horrible ! The clueless waitress tried to convince me to pay for it by offering me a free can of drink...what the...I ended up paying for half the dumplings even though only less than half was edible. Never going back there for dumplings.
Aya McKenzie
I have been there few times to dine in and food was fine, but service is horrible so I decided to get a take away last night and it was bad. <br/>I am a vegetarian so I ordered Egg &amp; Chives dumplings. I went home and had a bite and tasted something strange. I cut them in half and saw there are actually three different fillings all mixed up. There were chicken one, mushroom &amp; whatever meat, and egg &amp; chives (the one I wanted). Out of 20ish dumplings, I only had 5-6 egg&amp;chives dumplings. <br/>I don’t feel great after accidentally eating meat, and what if I was allergic to meat or mushroom (and I hate mushroom!!). I couldn't eat most of my dinner. Very unhappy and not going back there again.

This is definitely my favourite noodle bar in Auckland and one of the top Asian restaurants on a talent laden Dominion Road. I love this place. The noodles are home made and you can often see the chef with a massive length of noodle dough in one hand and a cleaver in the other slicing away and the newly made noodles falling into a boiling pot below. It's quite incredible. I have only ever had the noodles here and look forward to trying the other food. The portions are extremely generous so I would only go for the small bowl if you're in there for the first time. You can be well fed and watered for under $10 and that's not easy in Auckland these days. <br/><br/>Great value for money.<br/><br/>Visited again today. Had the cold spicy beef noodles which was again really good. Cost me $10 and came on a flat plate w/o soup instead of in a bowl with the soup which can be a bit hard work sometimes. Was a combination of noodles, fresh tomato, sliced beef, bean sprouts funghi and a sort of sour/spicy dressing. Nice work!

The best meal I've had out in ages! Interesting, delicious and cheap. I ate the shredded chicken with vermicelli (fat, wobbly strips of bead thread noodles) and the lamb kebabs (spicy and aromatic). Also great were the Kung Fu noodles (lamb + beef) and the China burger (only $4!) Highly recommended!

We had lunch here, was really good. It is lovely to see the girl at the front making the sushi to order. It was so fresh. Very professional. As other diners have said, it is very small, with only a few tables. It wasnt overly busy when we were there but even then 3 of the 4 tables were taken. Dont be put off though, it is very reasonably priced and worth the wait for something a little different. Thanks and all the best for continued success.
Adeline
Always full, but you'll def get a place if you waited just a bit. Food is wholesome, hearty and cheap as. Love the home made noodles. The beef on skewers is pretty good too. Highly recommend the lamb noodles....

This little eatery is always full of people, and offers northern Chinese food with a focus on lamb and cumin. If you order their kung fu noodles, you will see the chef stretching the noodles out by hand. Delicious! Don't come with a large group though, as the biggest table only seats 4. Also, if you arrive as a couple you could be moved to a smaller table to make room for other diners. All worth it, with the variety of food available and the large portions.
Lex Doe
awesome food, big portion, price is very reasonable! but the environment and services could be better.

Shaolin Kungfu Noodles is a rubbish noodle bar not worth spending your money on. Terrible menu items that are tasteless and not worth filling your stomachs with. Avoid this place at all costs

I came here with a friend for dinner on a friday night, it was quite early - 6:30 ish - and we were able to get a seat on the ground floor by the window as a couple were leaving when we walked through the door. Perfect!<br/><br/>I was nominated top orderer for the evening, and decided on some chicken and sweetcorn dumplings, a garlic eggplant potato dish along with a spring onion pancake. The dumplings were good, plenty of them arrived! The garlic eggplant potato dish was okay, the potatos were quite tough and the sauce wasn't super garlic-y (I probably wouldnt order it again from here), and their spring onion pancake was tasty, but shredded, which was nothing like the picture (or like I would expect when ordering a pancake).<br/><br/>The service was quick and everyone that we dealt with were happy and smiley. Atmosphere was fine, no amazing ambience was expected or delivered, but this didn't hinder a quick meal out. So while the experience was good the food was just an OK, hence the rating.<br/><br/>Laura | Laura Laura Blog

When I crave my grandmothers 'Lamian' (aka handmade flat noodles) I go to Shaolin Kung Fu Noodle. There's something magical about the art of hand pulled noodles floating in hot steamy broth with a few sprinkles of seeded chilli oil on a cold winter'a night. <br/><br/>The menu at Shaolin has been extended for the better and now they offer lamb skewers, chinese burgers, and a small selection of northern china dishes and staple foods. On the noodle front, all the 'Kung Fu' dishes will be their signature fresh handmade FLAT noodles. While some other dishes, like the pickled noodle soup I got tonight, will be served with the thinner stringy tubular noodles. I love the chew of fresh noodles, the way it soaks up all the flavours of the broth and tangles around the meat and veggie pieces. <br/><br/>This is a great Dominion road cheap eat - no ambience and basic customer service (broken English?) but really, when you are paying $10-13 for a decent size meal, who can complain?

Very yummy food, halal

Laura and I went to Shaolin for dinner tonight and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. We had the chicken and corn fried dumplings; eggplant, potatoes and onions; and the spring onion pizza. <br/>The service was quick and friendly, the staff were well presented and polite. There wasn't a language barrier at all either which was nice. <br/>The food itself was amazing. I'd definitely go there again. Three plates fed us both well and we took home takeaway as well. The dumplings were crispy on the bottom but still soft and the stuffing was incredibly tasty. The pizza was actually shredded and amazing. It was the best part of the meal if I'm honest and I could have eaten that alone. The eggplant and potato was a mixed bag. I loved the eggplant, it was soft and sweet and made fantastic dipping sauce for the spring onion pizza but I didn't enjoy the potatoes included. They were a bit dry for me. <br/>Overall I definitely enjoyed the meal and I would go back again. <br/><br/>We paid $40 for two of us and that included a soda each too. A good price for the amount of food we were served!

Meh.<br/><br/>I've come here a few times, usually on a weekend afternoon with a hangover or after work for dinner and it's always busy. There's seating upstairs but the staff isn't always as attentive as when you're sitting downstairs; sometimes you end up having to look for them/go downstairs to order.<br/><br/>Prices have increased a tad since the last time i've been, still affordable though. I'm not a huge fan of their hand pulled noodles but that's a personal preference. The big noodle soups are usually large enough for 2 people (although i've seen some people manage it by themselves).<br/><br/>Their food is medicore in my opinion, its not great but its not bad either.<br/><br/>Best place for a cheap meal that's somewhat filling depending on how big an appetitie you have.<br/><br/>P.s. I love their coconut sago. Cheap for the size compared to other ones I've had!<br/><br/>Service is so bad recently, the waiter moved us to a different table when we already sat down and restocked everything by literally shoving it in front of our faces while we ate. Very disappointed.

Shaolin Kung Fu Noodle greets you with the chefs pulling noodles to be cooked and served in front of you. This place is unique amongst Dominion Road's array of Asian eateries; fresh and flavorful! There are a lot of choices regarding their hand pulled noodles, my favorite being the lamb. Portion is quite big; I can't even find myself finishing their small bowl as the soup's very rich and noodles very filling. It's tasty but I find it overly oily sometimes. Their lamb skewers are great and cheap, perfectly seasoned with cumin and chili.<br/><br/>Foods here are halal so you can take your non-pork friends here. Something that quite annoys me is that the upstairs sitting area--it's mostly unattended so you have to wait for the staff to happen to come upstairs to make an order as they don't have a bell system. And the fact that some of them can't converse in English makes it hard to order and enquire sometimes. I had their dumplings before; finding it weird tasted (I suppose this is not a dumpling bar anyway). Good thing is that service is quick enough, and it's really really cheap.<br/><br/>Come here for the noodles, and the noodles only, not for ambience, long dinner or service.

Shaolin Kung Fu Noodle is our favourite on Dominion Road. We come here a lot. Like many other Chinese eateries on Dominion Road, it's not a flash place but the food and price more than make up for the lack of ambience.<br/><br/>They have a huge menu here which can be overwhelming at times, so we tend to stick to our favourites and try out a couple of new dishes only when we have a large group. The Muslim Chinese menu is very different to the Cantonese food that I am used to. They don't serve pork or rice here (except for a couple of fried rice dishes), instead they celebrate lamb and noodles. Their hand pulled noodles are chewy and springy and you can order extra noodles if you wish. It would be good if they could cut the noodles though. Taking a single noodle sometimes leads to filling your plate with a single noodle.<br/><br/>Downstair is always busy but they have rooms and tables upstairs. If booking for a group of 10 or more, you will likely get your own room. They don't have wine glasses here, but you can BYO pretty much anything you like. Beer seems to go well with their brand of spicy food.<br/><br/>There are many vegetarian options and there is usually something for everyone.<br/><br/>If you were only to order 3 dishes, I would recommend the Lamb & Fennel dumplings, Sensational Spicy Chicken (with extra noodles), and Sauteed eggplant in spicy garlic sauce. This is enough food for 4 or 5.<br/><br/>We always order the pan-fried Lamb & Fennel dumplings ($13). All the pan fried dumplings come with an edible tissue-thin layer on top of the dumplings. You eat it. It's fine. Make sure you help yourself to the condiments on each table. My favourite dipping sauce is black vinegar with a spoonful of chili.<br/><br/>The Sensational Spicy Chicken is a show stopper. We introduced to this dish by a friend a few years ago and have ordered it ever since. We usually order this with extra noodles because it doesn't come with quite enough. The Sensational Spicy Chicken comes in two sizes: large (feeds 4-6) or small (feeds 2-3) for around $30/25 is the perfect amount of heat and the Szechuan peppers an aromatic and addictive addition. The addition of potatoes is unusual but delicious.<br/><br/>The Sauteed eggplant in spicy garlic sauce ($14) is AMAZING. Always a crowd pleaser.<br/><br/>I find their kebabs and their burgers very dry. Neither come with any sauce. Their kung pao chicken is too spicy for my tastes.<br/><br/>The staff are friendly enough but rushed. Service isn't flash and English is scarce here but they know enough to get by. The more in your group the more dishes you can try and the smaller your per person bill. To be sample a good cross section of their menu, I recommend bringing 5-10 friends. We usually spend around $12-$18 per person with food to take home.

Shaolin Kung Fu Noodle has been bursting with people each time I've visited, which attests to its popularity. Service is quick but a good grasp of mandarin is needed if you want to convey your order to the waiter in a timely fashion - I've had to translate for a few poor souls in the past.<br/><br/>The hand pulled noodles here are a must try. Made on site, they have a wonderfully springy texture and sit so well in the store's hot and sour soups. After trying the spicy soups, all others felt bland. My favourite dishes so far are the Kung Fu Beef Noodles (very tender meat in spicy soup with aforementioned noodles) and the sauteéd eggplant in spicy garlic sauce. The restaurant has a very wide vegetarian selection which I haven't seen in many Chinese restaurants. <br/><br/>I have found that some of the non-noodle dishes have been a bit hit and miss but, after all, they ARE a noodle restaurant and they sure do noodles well!<br/><br/>Read my full review (along with the "miss" dishes) here: http://lucyeats.blogspot.co.nz/2014/02/shaolin-kung-fu-noodles.html
Two Honest Truths
The restaurant is quite busy even on a normal weekday, though they also have more seating upstairs if the ground level fills up. We sat at the table that had a very intriguing tabletop and spent our time deciphering which cartoon was what while waiting for our food, which took a significantly long time to come. It took almost 30 mins, so not an ideal spot if you only have a half hour lunch break. Though the wait is for good reason, seeing they make the noodles by hand on the spot so it's the perfect texture and cooked al dente.<br/><br/>I had the Cleaver Sliced Beef Noodles and they were the delicious. The large is great value being only $1.20 more with a lot more noodles. The small was enough for me. Service is brusque. It's $10 a bowl, so I'm not arguing. Also, I may just be fussy but it's best to bring your own water bottle. The cups are often not cleaned very well (we could see a veil of oil in it after pouring in the water given to us).

When I first came across Shaolin Kung Fu Noodle over three years ago, it was extremely inexpensive and different from the other Chinese food that I had eaten before, which had been mainly in the Cantonese style. Here, the flavours were of lamb and cumin, with bread and noodles rather than rice. You can read my review from 2010 here: http://nomnompanda.blogspot.co.nz/2010/09/shaolin-kung-fu-noodle.html<br/><br/>Since then, this eatery has grown in popularity, opened up the upper level for larger groups of customers, put up new signage to compete with the other blinking lights across the road, added a greater selection of dumplings (these seem to be quite a fad recently), and of course, increased their prices. Their style of food may no longer be unique, but the standard is as good as ever, and the eatery is just as busy, with congestion particularly bad at the payment area, which also happens to be right next to where the food comes out of the kitchen.<br/><br/>Great place for a cheap, casual meal, unless you are claustrophobic, or don't have time to wait.

It is a great place for noodles and many other Chinese foods. <br/><br/>It's not a big restaurant but the food there do has special flavour. the space is very tiny , so you need to prepare for the waiting, and the decoration is very simple, you can watch the chef in the kitchen preparing the food for you from the window,<br/><br/>You can order lamb, chicken and beef strings there which cooks in a Chinese way. ,just around 10 bucks, the meat is very tender soft ,very yummy.<br/><br/>The beef noodles are quite popular there.$10, And the soup is also tasty. <br/><br/>Have you tried sliced noodles? Come here to taste it. Quite nice texture. <br/><br/>also it is a muslim store ,so please do not take pork or order pork as we need to respect the owner's belief <br/><br/>See, spending less than 10 dollars can make you full. also you can park in along the road in the residential area

I chose Shaolin Kung Fu Noodle for my birthday dinner as I wanted somewhere cheap and cheerful with vegetarian options and Shaolin fit the bill perfectly. It looks small from the outside and whenever I go past it is always full but there are lots of tables upstairs. The menu is extensive and after much deliberation we ordered the Xingjiang Lamb Fried Noodles, Kung Fu Dry Noodles with Eggs, Braised Lamb with Spring Onion, Stir Fried Chicken with Cashews and Vegetables, Lamb & Fennel Dumplings and Vegetable & Egg Dumplings. We had a few communication issues with our server as there is not a drinks menu (or we weren’t given one) and as we were seated upstairs could not see the drinks selection but nothing major. The hand pulled noodles are fantastic and I would definitely go out of my way to get them again. The Xingjiang Lamb Fried Noodles was the stand out dish, it had just the right amount of heat for me (although it was much too spicy for one of my friends), and it had great flavour with lots of cumin. The dumplings were also great with a generous amount of fennel. The dumplings are larger than average and are filled right to the edge of the pastry with meat without that air bubble that gets filled with steam and were not greasy at all. The Braised Lamb with Spring Onion and Stir Fried Chicken with cashews were average and a bit on the greasy side. The portions were substantial and were unable to finish most of the dishes but our friendly server provided us with take away containers - leftover dumplings for lunch, score! The table next to us had ordered the spring onion pizza and chinese Lamb burger which both looked delicious so I think I will have to try them next time.

Shaolin Kung Fu Noodles is a small and unsuspecting noodle joint in the heart of Balmoral's cheap and cheerful precinct. The hand-pulled noodles are their biggest attraction, as are the cumin-spiked lamb skewers and Chinese lamb burger. Weird sounding, we know, but you'll have to trust us on this. This is Chinese food as you've probably never experienced before, and it is all good.
