Review Flying Horse Chinese Takeaways - Auckland Central

Just had the soft shell crab. Can’t stop talking about it. Fresh, perfectly seasoned, hot fresh crab at its absolute finest. Had no idea this place was so good. Genuinely, surprisingly fantastic. Will be trying everything in due course.

Love at first sight! I'm glad I tried this place. They have the best Shanghai noodles in Auckland. Whenever I crave fried noodles, this is definitely my top choice. I highly recommend it.

Love the fried rice!! Tried plain fried rice, bami goreng, chicken chow mien, lemon chicken, sweet and sour pork, and salt& chili prawn today. Recommended: Fried rice, vegetalbe chow mien and salt&chili prawn - they were outstanding! Lemon chicken & sweet and sour pork: batter too thick but tastes still good, great price for the quality Bami goreng was so-so to me Overall: great place, the deep fried doesn't have fishy taste which I loved so much, Kind staff who recommended salt&chili chicken (many thanks to her), the best Chinese takeaway place in Auckland. Will visit there again trying other dishes too!

Personally I believe this is the best Chinese takeaway store. Ordered here for multiple times, and food is always awesome! Black pepper and steak, fried rice, noodles… everything is great. (At least for the food I ordered so far) Staff is always friendly and lovely. Most of the food is reasonable price, but dim sum (such as prawn dumplings) is relatively pricey although it’s understandable price. You can order online as well, which makes it easier to give it a go. Definitely recommend and will go again for sure!

Had the singapore fried vermicelli and sweet and sour wontons. Pretty tasty.

I rate this as the best Chinese takeaways I’ve ever tasted. The sweet and sour pork as well as the chow mein are my favorite dishes. Their service is excellent and they operated safely through Covid lockdown. I hope they become available on Uber Eats one day.

As a brit in Auckland, bravo! closest thing to a chinese takeaway in the UK. chips with curry sauce, sweet & sour chicken balls and the best noodles! Highly recommend! Great service and I will be making the hour trip back here.

Best Chinese in NZ, hands down!! We are lucky enough to be locals now and every Friday we look forward to spending our hard earned money here as its so damn good. Highly recommend dads homemade Siu Mia, dumplings and wontons (all epic!), Chilli prawn, sweet and sour chicken, Shanghai noodles, Beef black bean, Burgers and chips. Bloody love it we do as a family of 5, and so do the kids!!! Thank you team FH Taka x

The best Chinese takeaway in Auckland. By far. Lovely staff. Salt and chilli chicken or prawns are a winner. Hopefully someday they make salt and pepper chips too. Can all UK ex pats please request this, so we can have a taste of home. I beg you all.

There’s only one place for Chinese food, that’s Flying Horse Takapuna. Amazing food, amazing service, amazing people. Thank you Jo and Jarvis 👍

A great experience in the shop. Staff is always friendly and lovely. The food ingredients are fresh and delicious as restaurant and the price are takeaways. Also dine in is good, like the tables and chairs. Definitely recommend and will go again.

My favorite takeaways, parents use to come here when I was a kid. Jo is amazing, always friendly. Noodles are delish and is the salt and chilli ribs and prawns. Sweet and sour pork is also a fav.

Really yummy, tried for the first time tonight.

It is certainly better on the Prawn dumplings this time. At least it is fresh prawns!
Colin Burke
Excellent quality food and service. The menu is flexible to meet all needs and preferences. Online and touch screen menu ordering is very modern and easy to use.

Chips and fried rice are good, but I found a slug in the chow mein once. Probably means fresh ingredients were used.
Angadh
Ordered roast pork and prawns fried rice with cashew. Loved it!! Good portion and quality

Not bad for a take away, I don't usually write reviews for a takeaway but the people seem lovely, there is a lot of food options and my dish had a lot of vegetables it's was also really good. However they did lack in noodles but for price I can't really complain.
Also wait time was quick.
Recommend if you want something quick, cheap and delicious

I've only gotten hot chips here but never been disappointed so.. 5 stars it is!

I ordered the chicken fried rice hoping it would taste as good as when I got it over 10 years ago. And it was exactly what I was wanting. I would happily drive from the city again for this fried rice. Very impressed.

Been going here for about 20 years. Every order is different, extremely inconsistent. Sometimes it's good, most of the time it's ok, sometimes I have to take it back. The price varies too depending on the day. Communication is a problem especially on the phone, so best to check what's in the bag before leaving the shop.

If your sick of trying different Chinese takeaways only to find you get half of what you expected or the taste just wasn't there you feel there's something missing well your search is over! At Flying Horse you get value for money. enough for lunch tomorrow, and the flavours are just great always consistent. I always feel like these guys set the standard for other to follow and some should take a lesson. My favourite is the Bami Goreng I usually order it a bit more spicy, lovely. I haven't found a Chinese takaways to beat these guys, a little dearer than others but for me more than happy to pay for quality. Highly recommended you wont be disappointed.

I have had food from the Flying Horse on several occasions. I have always loved their food and found it good value for money. After singing their praises to my kids we got take away from them on Sunday. It was horrible! The vegetables were totally over cooked. The food was sticky- too much thickener maybe. the Noodles were tough and overall the food had no flavour. The sweet and sour pork was dry and the batter was not the usual thin batter and tasted strange. I took the food back and the person thought there was nothing wrong with the food. He refunded me a third of the money. But no apology. I am sorry but if he thought the food was acceptable then I won't be going back!

Fast delivery and polite staff but didn’t quite nail the honey chicken and didn’t live up to the photos displayed of it. Tasted like they squirted honey on the rice and just fried some chicken 😂👍🏼

Ordered a heap of food for 2 large families. It was quick, pretty tasty and the portions were very generous. Nice flavours throughout, and no complaints from the gang. Not greasy, which was a bonus, and plenty of leftovers for lunch/dinner the following day. We had to drive down to order as someone hadn’t reconnected the portable phone, but that was the only negative. Ate the food too quickly to take photos!

Tried this place as we were craving for some Asian delicacies and utterly disappointed. Ordered a fried rice with chicken and cashews and a Nasi goreng with chicken. The portion was huge , easily sufficient for two people and the taste was average.
The point I disliked the most is that the chef was actually taking out the beef and pork from the dishes ordered as we only asked for chicken. We could clearly see this happening, thanks to the open kitchen concept. We immediately raised this and they freshly prepared the dishes again for us as they were caught in the act directly. However, this is not a good thing as this maybe related to religious beliefs for some people and could be an allergic issue as well.
I would recommend anyone trying this place to watch out for this point .
Riley
Not great for takeaways. Meat in the sweet and sour rice meal was far to big to eat, considering they did supply plastic cutlery. Slightly more pricey than other local places with similar standards of food

i have only tried their chicken n veges on white rice so far but i must say its tasty. though he charges extra to make it spicy which i dont think should b the case. also for veges they stuff it with only broccoli n cauli which are very gassy so they shud consider balancing the veges out. and rice also needs to be more.

We have gone to this takeaway for 15 years as its nearby in Takapuna and our favourite. We order different meals from the menu probably once a fortnight. I can advise the Nasi Gorang is awesome as a slightly spicey dish and the Vege's on white rice are typically fresh and crisp. The service is fast and friendly. Our thanks to the owners and staff- keep up the good work !

Been a regular here for close to 10 years. Like most other reviewers have mentioned, it is fast and super cheap. Definitely uses a lot less oil and salt compared to other Chinese takeaways such as this one so you feel a little less guilty. Giving it a 4 purely because it is a takeaway joint but it does it well.

VERDICT: would 100% recommend to satisfy all Chinese takeaway cravings

nice place, fast cheap and yummy! Always my first choice for lunch when I worked in takapuna, I always order the lunch special seven dollars steak fried chew mien , different from other Chinese takeaway , the noodle is crisp , and cook with lots of veggies , nice and thick sauce!

Always good here, their dishes are full of flavour and not too expencive. I normally get the combination fried rice, sweet n sour pork and some wontons or pork buns

Hi Flying Horse Takeaway. This is probably just another review that you will ignore but I have to tell you that my son and I had food poisoning with the $7 chicken fried rice (lunch special) that I bought from you. I might have ordered the wrong food from your selection as this clearly wasn't a best seller. I love rice, I love quick food and I love how it's cheap so I fell for your trap. I had a little bite but didn't finish it so I set it aside. An hour or so after I ate some of it I felt something in my stomach but I ignored it. I brought home my leftover and shared it with my son for dinner. Biggest mistake. When we woke up very early in the morning, we had stomach pains, diarrhoea, and gas. We went to the toilet heaps of times. Our experience was very painful. At first we thought it was caused by another dish that we had for dinner together with your fried rice. We ate the same meal the next day just to confirm what caused the problem but we didn't have any problems with it so it was really your chicken fried rice.

I understand that running a food business is difficult. You have to keep things fresh all the time. I don't really care that much about freshness but if your food will cause diseases to customers who buy your food, you might want to retrace what you've been doing wrong. This is very unacceptable.

My colleagues have always warned me that your food is so bad and that I shouldn't go there. I didn't really care that much because I love Chinese takeaway. They even threw away your menu from our compilation of restaurant menus around Takapuna. I kept going to your shop because it's cheap and fast.

Today, we officially tore your menu and put you on our black-list. Never coming back again.

Better than average Chinese takeaways. I've always had fast service, great value for money - biggest spring rolls I've encountered, particularly in the area and excellent value for the price in comparison; chicken fried rice always a winner and again really good portion size. A definite go-to meal option when you're in the area and want a night off from cooking.

Good value for money very good service. Yummy food good quality. Just love their chicken fried rice spicy.

Review: Interesting flavours, but maybe a bit much.

The Sweet and Sour pork seems to have been flavoured with Cardamom? This isn't exactly a standard flavour, not what I had expected. The szechuan spare ribs weren't spicy, they were quite sweet, overly so, which is something that all the sauces shared. The prawn dumplings were fresh, minimalistic and very enjoyable. It may be your special recipe, but it's not something I would come for regularly.

Money well spend for a quick feed with the boys after a day at the beach I would recommend to try their fried rice and nasi gorang. New fave takeaways in north shore?
Mark Goldie
I love this place, I have been going here for close to 20 years .. My parents loved it, and even though I have lived all around Auckland, as soon as I came back to the shore, this is the Chinese Takeaway of choice.
Barbara Goldie
This is our favorite chinese takeaway on the North Shore. We enjoy their steak or chicken fried rice, and unlike most fried rice it is even better reheated later in the week for leftovers - not greasy like some places. We also enjoy their lemon chicken. I love their wantons (and even like them reheated later) but my partner prefers to have their chips with his meal, they are pretty darn yummy. Worth the drive to Takapuna, blows away all of the closer chinese takeaways we have tried.
