Review Sages Indian Restaurant - Auckland Central

Dine in, one of my favourite Biryani's. Sets the benchmark like home made. Will put a smile after every bite.

Ordered chicken tikka masala and it was good. Thick sauce and good mix of meat and capsicum. Rice was also fluffy and delicious. Mango lassi was also nice. Just odd to have it topped with chocolate powder. Soothing background music. Just pricey.

Normally I place a phone order for pick up but last time when I made an online order for delivery they accidentally missed my order. After a long wait for 1hr 53m I got my food with complementary crispy chips, and they offered 10% discount for next order. Anyway I’m highly likely to go back there for only one reason that their curry & nann are super tasty. definitely recommended.

Sages Restaurant review Up until recently my only experience with Indian cuisine had come from shopping malls and the odd take out. That all changed when a friend invited me to review Sages in Point Chevalier. Food The Mango Chicken I ordered was one of the best meals that I have had for a while. The meat was perfectly cooked, with just the right amount of spices that helped to enhance the dish, without overpowering it. Everything I ate just seemed to come to life, from the moist and tender chicken, to the crispiness of the garlic Naan Bread. Part of that is down to the work of co-owner and chef Kamal Jhajj, who insists on using only the best ingredients in the dishes he creates, to the point where he’ll close the kitchen if he doesn’t have access to the freshest foods available. Setup The restaurant itself is deceptively nondescript, from the outside but becomes warm and inviting once I stepped through the front door. The low lighting and dark red wallpaper really gives Sage’s a romantic vibe that I liked a lot. The staff were friendly and efficient, with Kamal regularly coming out to see how we were, although I suspect it may have been because it was a slow Wednesday night. Conclusion As a reviewer I’m not sure if it’s a good idea to give restaurants a perfect 10, but Sage’s really nails it with its friendly service, delicious offerings, and romantic ambiance. 10/10

HOT TIP!!! If you're getting home delivery, order on menu log it's about 20% cheaper. Great food as always!!

Seriously great Indian cuisine. Only ever had takeaways so can't speak to the service or dining in but I haven't exoerience consistency like this anywhere else. Perfect 🤌🏽

My experience after many years of stopping by sages to pick up has consistently been a blessing to my week. Filling, rich and fantastic food is a handful of the words that I would use to describe the meals I’ve enjoyed over the years which I’ve eaten here. At this point it is a staple in my diet, something I enjoy regularly.

We've had food from here a number of times now and every time they've knocked it out of the park. Taste, quality, quantity all superb. Lamb biryani, Garlic naan, mango lassi, butter chicken (more tomato coming through on the flavours, best one I've had). Last but definitely not least the Gulab Jamun which has unexpectedly ruined every other Gulab Jamun for me. Nothing has measured up since. It's not the cheapest but it's definitely worth every penny. Can't wait to try the rest of the menu.

Nice food, good atmosphere and service. Not too pricey. Recommended, will be going again

Had a lovely lunch here with a friend. Friendly service. We had the lamb curry with spinach (forgot the name) and the Aloo Gobi. Very tasty. Good portions, standard pricing. I think the takeaways are a little cheaper and have some special combos. We asked for medium but it was quite mild, would ask for at least Kiwi hot if you want a bit of spice.

I've been ordering Sages Curry for must be 20 years and their food is always great. Super tasty and great delivery on a Tuesday night in Level 3. Our meal turned up a the time we ordered through the online ordering system. The naan was delicious and fresh and the curries yummy.

Wonderful, warm place for a great evening with family..lovely food and the chicken dishes are amazing

Lovely ppl, have the best customer service. Food is worth the money. Always trouble them at coming late but they still take care of everything. Will be back many times. 🙂

We got some takeaways from here, it was very very very expensive for that we actually received. The food itself was extremely oily, flavourless and ridden with artificial colour. <br/><br/>Samosas were more like cocktail samosa. I cannot believe how tiny they were, more pastry than filling. <br/><br/>Honestly if you wanted some flavourful food, I would try elsewhere.
Feel Food
I went there with family n ordered Amirtsari fish tikka, chicken tikka for starters and chilli chicken with naan as mains. Starters were fried in oil. Chilli chicken was dry as sand n loaded with onions, chicken was hard to find in the dish. Very disappointing food quality.

I have never received such rude, disgusting, RACIST, insulting service in my life. Our family has happily dined at this restaurant over the years where the food has been delicious. As of late, the service has been appalling unfortunately this time it was late we just wanted to have a seat and a nice meal. 10mins into this experience, the ugliness of this place came flooding back.<br/><br/>The waitress was pleasant and took our order. 20 minutes into our waiting time assuming our meals were being cooked, we happily chatted amongst ourselves. All of a sudden a very butch, unfortunate looking woman is towering over us- with no introduction of herself or excusing herself for interrupting our conversation she proceeds with 'There are 6 of you, you've ordered 3 banquets, that means each of you pay $33.50pp...pp means per person, that's $33.50 per person...it's quite costly (stood there shaking at her head at us)..it's a lot of money..."<br/><br/>I stared at her in disbelief and asked "so all this time our meals have not been prepared?" Very abruptly "No they haven't!"<br/><br/>The assumption that $33.50 per person was too much to pay and 'quite costly' expecting us to say 'oh you're right, that is too much we should leave..' is beyond words. I've never been so insulted in my life. The rudeness, the abruptness of this woman- and it turns out this hideous of a woman is actually the Manager!!! Her delivery, the assumption and ignorance almost has ground for pressing charges for her arrest.<br/><br/>Disgusted beyond words.

Disappointing first time ordering with these people. They charged me for something I didn't order and when I called them before the delivery guy even arrived they were very rude. I was very clear what my order was and I tried very hard to explain it to them but she was very rude and wouldn't budge with helping me get my money back. Disappointing because I can't even eat the extra curry they charged me for as I have dairy allergies and that curry has dairy in it. Very disappointed in their customer service.

I dont do reviews , this must be my first ever. No I didn't get paid or even expect a discount for this ! :) I have been going here for over 20 years and every time it has been excellent. I have Airbnb guests and I never hesitate to send them here - or get a delivery. Dutch well traveled guests , only last week, proclaimed Sages No 2 in the World , being 2nd perhaps to a Curry they had in Nepal. Another jet setter guest ..Bruce had this to say in my AirBnB review .. "Arrived in from Istanbul with two friends. Had wonderful vino reception from Peter before walking to a fabulous neighbourhood Indian restaurant, Sages. A memorable evening."....  The staff are also great , and remember what I like .. which is useful as the old eyes cant read the small print easily. Highly recommend a Kingfisher Strong in the tall bottle , just works with Curry.  ( Just spotted I have done a review and it was for Sages ..  .. "my Hawaiian AirBnB guests loved it" )

I wish I could rate it lower.  I like good food and service.  Sages has neither.  Years ago it was one of our favourites.  However now its abysmal.  Corners are being cut everywhere and the manager/owner does not seem to care.  She just wants your coin and nothing else.  Food quality has degraded so badly Im surprised they still manage to retain a food license. And the owner....good grief.

Every time we go to sages I always get put off by the front of house staff. In my opinion they are not friendly and very abrupt- and every time my husband and I look at each other and initially regret going there for dinner. <br/>But then when we order our curries and garlic naan we are reminded why our family has been going there for over 10 years!<br/>The food is absolutely delicious and the medium spice is always perfect! But unfortunately the staff is the biggest let down. We will still be coming back because of the food, but hopefully they can improve on their front of house service <br/>Food: 5 stars<br/>Service: 1.5 stars<br/>Ambience: 2 stars

Definitely recommend! All dishes we got were delicious. They have great vegetarian options too. Been here a few times and is always great. Will be back for sure.
Scotsman
Food was OK, but one of the wait staff was rude (the main one). Food took extremely long to come out and she didn’t bother to check in on us if we wanted more drinks, we had to go up to the bar to order drinks! Sorry but won’t be back until service improves
I Am Hungry
Ordered food delivery - butter chicken and malai kofta with rotis.<br/>Taste was good however butter chicken had only few pieces of chicken (3-5pices) rest was curry...and malai kofta had stuffings full of potato not cheese even though it said cheese in the menu.... felt ripped off..when we are paying $40 .. why are we getting so poor quantity....shame on you...not ordering again.

We have been here a few times a it's has been really good. But tonight got frozen raw prawns, after complaining, the waitress agreed Along with manager they were totally raw, they cooked them and Served the again. The lamb and beef lovely but prawns were revolting. We paid the bill which they charged in full, but said next time we come there will be a credit, considering they don't know who we are not sure how that will happen. I think they have lost some very good local customers.
Sóphie
Customer service is shocking! And may I add the creepy looking worker whom kept starring at my partner & i.. weirdo lol.<br/>Anyway, the food is AVERAGE! I got butter chicken, was quite bland . Waste of $$ never go back there again.. <br/><br/>They stare at you while you eat, keep hanging around the table WHILE you are still eating! I'd go to spice traders Mount Roskill ANYDAY!<br/>

Personally I think Sages has the best Butter Chicken and garlic naan (I can't say in Auckland because I haven't tried everywhere that serves Butter Chicken and garlic naan). one of my favourite places to eat.
ALok Singh
I must say this place for place for enjoying mouth-watering Indian food in Auckland. I just loved their seafood delicacies, really amazing!!!!
Lisa Tavan
This is the best Indian restaurant in Auckland, I must say! I just loved their Indian cuisine specially the meat and chicken dishes. Very happy with the behavior and attentiveness of their staffs<br/>.

I would definitely meet them again very soon. Thanks to their specially spiced delicious Indian food in Auckland! They combine good food with amazing ambience. sages Indian restaurant just make it happen.
Steve Teile
I would definitely recommend visiting and spice up this restaurant for enjoying tasty of Indian cuisine vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes.

My girlfriend and I had a nice experience here. The staff were very friendly and polite and the setting was nice. One thing that we thought could have been better was that many other Indian Restaurants serve complimentary Poppadoms whilst you wait for your meal. Not this one. And the meal did take a while to arrive, somewhere in the order of 20-30 minutes for two curries. But the curries were very nice, good flavour and quantity. Overall we felt that we would come back if we were in the area and wanting Indian again.

THE MANAGER AND CUSTOMER SERVICE ARE ABSOLUTELY DIAGRACEFUL. Where do I start. We usually get takeout from here but decided to eat in. Never, ever again. We arrived at 7pm. Ordered at 715. Food came out at 830. I asked at 810 how much longer, I was told 5 mins, turned into 20. 1 of the Naan breads was wrong. No offer on refills or anythung even at the 1 hour mark, so the cokes ordered an hour ago were long gone. If we needed anything (i.e. just another drink) I went and asked for it. Everybody elae seemed to be offered drinks etc. When it came to paying, the manager couldnt have cared less. She didnt apologise for the huge wait, she offered excuses. "Its busy tonight with only one chef" - bullcrap, I could see 3 in there. Apparently as we ordered onion baji, this pushed our dinners behind THREE tables that came in after us. If there ia going to be a huge wait, you should let the table know as we would have left. I asked for atleast the drinks to be wiped, and she agreed plus to take off the incorrect Naan. Get home, she only took off the Naan. So basically, she told us to get f*cked. Absolutely pissed off at this place which is a shame.

FIND A DIFFERENT RESTAURANT!!! As locals we had supported Sages since it opened even though the food was average at best. After an incident with the delivery driver taking money he shouldn't and the incredibly rude treatment from the Manager/Owner when raised, we will NEVER use again and recommend you also look to other local restaurants.

Best Indian takeaways I've had this side of Mount Roskill!<br/>Quick, delicious and generous succulent portions!<br/>Heaps of interesting vegetarian options as well. <br/><br/>The whole place smells great like fresh ingredients, and the staff seemed friendly.. looking forward to dining in sometime soon. :)
Jess Hale
Sages is "my local" Indian restaurant, and I've enjoyed their food for the last six or seven years.<br/><br/>Eating in their decor and speed of service is relatively good, and I also frequently get takeaways. I appreciate the delivery as well.<br/><br/>I've had a variety of their curries, all are good. The only issue I've had is the onion bhaji can be inconsistent - sometimes slightly undercooked. Usually great though!
Finn Howell
If you want to wait 45m for your curry that has very little meat and is highly overpriced then go to Sages. The only saving grace was the flavour in the sauce. I would not go back, and that's purely down to how cheated I felt about how stingy the chef was with the meat.
Lauren Rea Edwards
Don't order delivery with out the exact cash amount. My order was $34 I gave them $54 expecting a $20 note in return. Surely not too much change for them to carry. Apparently so. After debate with the delivery guy about how he should go back to the store and get my change he looked blankly at me, I fail to see why he wasn't able to do this. He then proceeded to make a phone call, then gave me the food, took my money and said he would be back with the $20. It's been half an hour. I am still waiting for them to return. Appalling service. The food was cold and after being given a 45-60 min wait time it turned up 1 hour 15 mins after ordering. Last time I ever go order from here.

Good quality food at reasonable prices. A place I visit frequently for my daily food needs. Try the Achari chicken, it's excellent. They have good deals from Sunday to Tuesday at $12

Went with three others and shared the 'Sages Banquet' meal. We had a giant bowel of rice to share plus four different curries to dig into, plus a small platter for starters. Each dish was deliciously creamy and full of flavour, and even though there was four of us in total, we couldn't finish the food that was bought out and were allowed to take away the left overs. Best Indian in Auckland!

We went to Sages for dinner and we were blown away from the flavour of the food. The butter chicken and the Chicken Korma were both full of flavour and beautiful. The service and the decor were great overall and the waitress made sure we were looked after. Excellent service!

Very good Indian food. Very authentic with great flavours and good Kiwi service. The potato balls in curry are very good as is the good old butter chicken and palak paneer.

We ordered takeaway from this place, 2 curries and 2 Naans<br/><br/>Pros: Food was very pleasant and rather delicious. Judging just by the food and that alone, we will definitely go back again<br/><br/>Cons: Very Very rude employee over the phone. She was not willing to assist a very simple special diet question. Poor customer service or rather no service.<br/><br/>Rice quality was poor. Not sure what brand they use but wasn't nice and fluffy as it is meant to be.<br/><br/>My god, wait time was way too long. Almost an hour and 20 mins.

We have been faithful Sages Restaurant fans over a decade and they never fail to disappoint. The food is delicious, the service is great and the prices are reasonable. We have tried Indian food at many places in New Zealand and have found nothing better than Sages.

I really enjoyed this place growing up, would make a special trip just to eat it, took all my potentials here for picnic food to go to western springs, but I feel these last few years this place has slipped quite badly. <br/>between my partner and I we had an entrée and main to share, main came out first then entrée, small portions, and minimal meat. Later that night after our meal I had the craziest heart burn and reflux. (the glass we had also still had someone else's lipstick on it).<br/><br/>I would of loved to have seen this place excel. But for now I am seeking a New Indian restaurant in the area... I have dined at Empress of India in Grey Lynn and was great! the person behind the counter mentioned that many people come there from Point Chev as the lack of great Indian places is evident.
True Foodie
We are locals in Pt Chev and have been here a few times, generally we have found the staff rude, but the food is average for something handy and local. I ordered something for a take away tonight and the staff member was rude as per normal. We ordered a tandoori chicken and 4 garlic naans, absolute rip off to start with compared to other Indian restaurants , and the naan bread tastes like it was dipped in oil with no garlic on it. I will never go here again !! We had to go out and get naans somewhere as these ones are un-eatable !

I visited Sages for the first time recently, and was very impressed. I'm a huge fan of Indian food, but there are a lot of mediocre restaurants around. Thankfully, Sages isn't one of them. The food was delicious, and my companions and I will definitely return to try more of the menu. Highly recommended.
Henry
Great food, nice layout and friendly service. One of the best Indian meals I have had. Also I like their delivery service
Cheryl Horvath
I am sad to say that our experience was anything but pleasant, my daughter received her meal approx 35 mins afta we arrived and then my husband receieved his 10 mins later after I hour I had not received mine and they had finished theirs, not wanting to dine alone I asked 3 times for my meal to to bagged up so I could take it home, we asked for chilled water 4 times and they mucked up the bill charging us for food we did not receive this restaurant must have changed hands I would never return to dine there again it was a nightmere.
Phillip Wackrow
Excellent menu choice. Great atmosphere and friendly staff.<br/>I would say it would be one of the best Indian cuisine restaurants i have been to in Auckland.

I went there one weekday with a mate and we couldnt tell if the place was open or not. The front door was locked so we had to knock and wave through the window that we wanted to give them money. We got in! it was basically empty. bough a beer. 7 bucks. ordered a vindaloo (specifically requested it to be a hot as possible) and a vege dish. Paid the $40 bucks and tried to leave but they had locked us in. Food was absolutely delicious. (I couldve had an even hotted vindaloo though!) Also coulda gone for a bit more meat in there for a 2o dollar takaway dish. Overall food was good but locking us in was bad.
David Boshier
Friends were really keen for us to try this place as they are regulars. We were not disappointed.<br/><br/>The six of us ordered a complete range of dishes to share from the menu and all were tasty, fresh and excellent. Service was friendly with a smile.<br/><br/>Worth travelling to if you want a change from your local favorite Indian.
Jess
Sages are my "local" Indian restaurant. I've eaten in quite a few times, and the service and food has always been great - I particularly like the cosy, warm atmosphere in the restaurant.<br/><br/>We order takeaways about once a week, either picking up or making use of their great delivery service. The curries are always yummy, and we're particularly fond of the onion bahji and pakora as side dishes. I recommend the mango chicken, chicken tikka masala and lamb saagwala.
Jess Swingler
The food is fantastic and is very reasonably priced. We thought the service was great, they were very friendly and had a laugh with us. We have eaten in and ordered take away and have never been disappointed.
Doug Rencher
Sages has to be the best Indian restaurant in Auckland. Not only are Karen and Jamahl excellent, friendly host the food is absolutely great! I have visited Sages on over 20 occasions and have never had a bad experience. Only regret that since moving out of the area I do not get there as often.
Jason
Totally excellent REAL indian food<br/>excellent service<br/>actually it’s the best indian food in Auckland -
Sera
Wonderful place to dine with great atmosphere! Loved it. Have to be one of the best Indian restaurant I have dined in regards to the atmosphere ever.great service, great food. Would never have expected this treasure in the middle of Pt. Chevalier Will definitely be back and would be perfect for a function like a wedding or any other party.
Kevin
Great yummy food &amp; great friendly service with reasonable prices. My work colleagues &amp; I had a wonderful time &amp; look forward to our next dining experience! Well done Sages
Ken
This is the best curry shop around, the owners are really cool and sweet. They always say hello which is rare these days. I love the food, the best indian food around. I hope u guys have successful business,u r the best, ur a couple of sweeties
James Anderson
Never ever go at this resturant, lady is very rude will not leave you alone, we were served with stale rice and curry, hate this place, don't like the fat lady owner, the reviews below sound 100% true
Jacinda
After finding a large piece of dirty glass found in the curry, they absolutely refused to refund our money! They also refused to take ANY responsibility saying it must have come from the bag of peas or other vegetable.. after some debate, they agreed on a partial refund of one of the curries as 1/4 of it already had been eaten before the glass was found! They would not refund for the 2 naan bread or the other curry even though it could not be eaten after being completely put off our meal. So we walked out with one sore tooth, out of pocket and unfed!... We will never be eating at Sages again!
Mark Maffey
Went for the Sages Banquet, they were flexible enough to change one of the main options for us. There were three of us and the entrees and mains were more than sufficient in size, and all were very tasty. <br/><br/>Karen is an excellent hostess and have no trouble in recommending this restaurant to others, well priced, good selection of dishes and all very tasty
Ray Gilbert
Sage's had been a regular haunt with really good food however we will never be going back again after tonight's experience. 5 of us went for dinner and, not being particularly big eaters, we ordered 4 banquet meals between us. This was not good enough for them. Bearing in mind 4 banquets were over $100 and we could have just ordered 5 mains at under $80, we found the attitude bewildering. At first they only brought out 4 plates and 4 sets of cutlery. Then after our protest they brought the 5th one and we thought they had seen sense. That was until we received the bill and we were charged for 5 banquets. Pretty short-sighted in a recession to alienate customers like that. Not only will we not be going back but nor will our friends and we will all be telling everyone we know to avoid Sage's like the plague
Jeef
Sages went through a purple patch, lost it a bit and has rebounded with style. Best pick a night when the spare chef isn't on, as he oversalts everything, but on song, this place thoroughly justifies the Metro Award it got a couple of years ago.<br/><br/>highly recommend the Chicken -Madras and -Tikka Masala, but everything is good, fresh and well-made. Competitive pricing, great service and the best naans in Auckland. It's all good!
Andy Edmunds
