Review Jaan Turkish Cafe - Auckland Central

Rung -Ch -Rung
I like the rice taste. It makes me remember the same feeling when I had in Istanbul. However, for lamb shank, I feel it's a bit oily, like lamb shank bolognese. But overall food are so good. I recommend grilled meat. It so so good. The service is great. Restaurant is clean and good atmosphere.

We thought we'd try out this Mediterranean restaurant in Kingsland. It was a pretty interesting place, food was ok but not really spectacular. We had babaganoush and their mixed grill. I was expecting more I guess as we have tried other Mediterranean restaurants around that were really superb. Service was good 'tho.

Best Mediterranean food in Auckland! Such delicious flavours in all their dishes! The meat was perfectly cooked and paired well with fresh Salads and a variety of dips! Also it looks out to the neighbourhood behind and its nice to dine away by the window looking out. Do note that on hot days, the place does get very hot even next to a window.

Would highly highly recommend this amazing place! The food here is just too good for people who love Mediterranean food! We go here for all milestone celebrations and happy moments! Always a feel good place for food! Staff are friendly and very accommodating as well! Be it time with family, friends or a date- suits any occasion literally! I would go here any day!
Georgia Manning
Unbelievably good food. Best hummus i’ve ever had in my life, ended up leaving with 2 tubs. Everything was fresh and made in house. The staff were helpful and friendly. 10/10 would recommend this place for amazing food and a casual night out.

Attended with the cabincrew ladies last wk Friday, Food was absolutely amazing, the size of my plate, goodness gracious, it was humugus!!!! Thank you for the wonderful food and overall experience, my mojito was nice and strong as it should be. Will have to bring my family here. Overall highly recommend

Absolutely highly recommend Jaan. We dined here last night by chance for a late bite, and were 'wowed' by the Staff, seriously delicious food - superb, and decor. We are definitely returning, probably sooner than later. Our Server was attentive, good customer service along with the lovely Lady who greeted, seated and settled our bill. Thank you for the complimentary Orange Turkish Delight wow, super delicious.
Timothy Totty
First time trying it last night and the food and service was amazing! Friendly staff and well set, clean place. Had a mix of meat and vegetarian options with great variety. Will come by again.
Betsy Wang
Delicious food full of flavour with decent portions. There humus is a must have!!!! Only thing to improve on is probably their customer service, we walked in with no other customers there, all the staff just stared at us with out greeting….slightly awkward…
Katie LeVert
Food was absolutely delicious. We had the mixed grill and the breads and dips and the chicken was extremely tender. The salad had the most beautiful dressing. We will be back for sure

Came here on 13/5/23 around 8-9pm, white lady behind the bar reception was extremely rude for no reason. This is not my first time being served by her, and she still has not been able to make a change with her attitude. I love this restaurant but she needs to fix up or go. Other than that the food and shisha was awesome. The two ladies serving us downstairs were lovely and respectful.
Jack Marshall
Great spot. Guy in the jacket was informative and helpful. Obviously a family joint as they care about their work. Great view to contemplate life as you sip a Pinot noir and eat dolmades. Bliss is only a meze plater away.
Anniruth Kannan
Amazing place. Beautiful interiors. Fantastic staff. The food was good, one of the best Arabian (Turkish/Lebanese) style food I have had in Auckland.
Patricia
Great food, great selection, great service but it can get a bit loud in there when crowded.
Nikola Bojovic
Went Jaans for my birthday dinner and the food was actually amazing . Unfortunately everything else wasn't. We waited for drinks over 15 minutes , at one point I had to get up and ask for the drink and the waitress didn't even put the drink through. However I still had to pay for them. We brought in a cake and were not told we had to pay "cakeage" not when I called to book, not when we brought in the cake and not even from the waitress who offered to put it on the plate. Manager tried to tell us they make their own cakes and that's why ?? Which I highly doubt . She was disinterested and rude . Definitely do not recommend even though the food was on point .

$7 for a cup of blinking jasmine tea!!! Did they grow the tea leafs and hand dry them individually by waving them around?? Not even organic tea, no milk or thought required, just a tea bag and some hot water. Also the coffee was $7 and burnt! Have been coming here for about a year in large and small groups. The vegetarian platter once were huge, service always slow but good food. It seems to decline in quality all round every time we visit. Last night, the vegetarian platter was tiny in comparison, hummus was like runny gravy, and there were two pieces of Turkish bread about 2cm by 5cm for all of the dips. I think the owner gets what he pays for with the staff, they're lovely but there seems to be no maitre'd or direction. Over all food, 1.5 stars, ambience 1 and service 1.... We won't be returning.
Ellen Bernardo
Good staff...nice place...excellent food. Only parking is difficult.
Parth Batra
It's an amazing place to enjoy a meal with great ambience and superb staff.

Jaan is my favourite Auckland restaurant . The food is consistently fresh and delectable . The setting is fabulous . Each time I visit from Hong Kong I eat at Jaan and feel instantly welcomed . The food is generously served and carefully prepared . Incredible value for money .
Amy Stevens
Fantastic service, fantastic food, great atmosphere!
Roger Smith
Amazing service and the yummiest food (especially the Prawn salad). Cheap and affordable but still really good for a meal with mates, or with a date! :)

Went before the third ABs vs Lions test. The food was awesome! and the staff were fantastic. Definitely going back!

George Campbell
Food is really good I love the chicken shish, have been a few times and has never let me down, the only slightly negative thing... I think the shisha is over priced at $30.
Jaydan Jensen
I love the food and the atmosphere at Jaan if you get the chance have dinner or lunch there you will love it! Try the char grill menu!!
Andrea Domínguez-Londono
It is simply delicious! Staff are so nice and not enough words to describe Ramo, he's fantastic! The Kebab on rice is our favorite and all the sauces they offer are great!
Jayden Elliott
Some of the best food I've ever eaten, cheers Jaan team
Maselina Sao
Ordered through uber eats and received a deep fried cockroach with our wedges.
Andrea Garnham
I have allways had very good service when we have been. Staff are friendly and the food is allways good.

Adeeb Adam Armalite
Amazing food and amazing shisha! What more do you need? :-)
Camelia Balfas
Awesome food, great atmosphere and amazing hospitality. Thanks Ramo!
Sheetal Patel
I went there for a girls nights.. Firstly whenever we asked for anything, they completely forgot and we had to repeatedly ask. Their customer service was really bad, lacked efficiency, especially while ordering.
Ken Miyamoto
Very friendly owner and nice people. Food also very GOOD!! I love SHISH. *\(^o^)/*
Sergio Davidov
Great place..superb food and nice vibe

Yalla Habibi love love the Arabic cuisine here. So many varieties nd so much to choose from. Delicious and presentable. Good cocktails too.
Salimere Khorami
This is one of our favourite places to meet with family and close friends specifically as the atmosphere is unique with its fantastic mix of different ethnic groups (we are a blended Arab and Pacific Island family).<br/>We have noticed the serving sizes have reduced somewhat but no less delicious. There is a UK waitress whose service puts us at ease and is very helpful. Highly recommend the bread and dips platter as a starter and the mixed meat mezze. <br/>Some staff are more welcoming and friendly than others. Food is very much like what we make at home. Love it.
Chris Ticket
Good food all year round
Daniel Allen
The food here is great but customer service is very disappointing. The manager gave me a call on the day of our booking to say they aren’t doing BYO because the rugby is on. <br/><br/>Could have told me this when I booked a week or so earlier.<br/>Left us scrambling to find a new place to book dinner for 13 people.<br/><br/>Please be upfront in the future if you’re not going to allow BYO when it’s clearly stated on your Zomato page.
Leyo Wong
I went to this place for dinner with my partner today. I can tell the food, shisha, and service quality are lovely!! 😍 Especially the salad, are very tasty. The white sauce they put in the dishes was so yum!! Can’t explain how yum, but very nice restaurant. Recommend this!! 👍
Emma Holgérus
We were a group of 13 people. Had a range of starters: dolmas, calamari, mezzo, prawns. It was all delish. Mains: chicken sheesh, moussaka, fish, falafel salad. Also all delish, and very generous portion sizes. How do they make the rice taste so good?
Andy
Featuring a large variety of national Turkish dishes, a multi-floor place that offers a great view and even has a small garden on the first floor.
Renée Hyde
Delicious, fresh and tasty meals with huge portion sizes. Highly recommend the Shish meals. Look forward to coming back and Trying other menu items
Kirstie Jory
My favourite Turkish place in Auckland always great food and service. The meat meze platter is value for money and out go to for date night. However the menus is all good value and delish. Well worth the trip for amazing traditional Turkish food. And don’t forget to take some Turkish delight for the road.
Foodislife
Was here for drinks after work. Great atmosphere and good hookah.
Kate Lauren
My go to Hookah bar. Reminds of places in Australia where the hookah scene is a bit bigger. A much nicer and friendlier place than any in town and more relaxed too. You pay a bit more than others around but you get quality service and atmosphere
Ronash
Usually, only go here for the shisha. Usually busy, shisha flavours are nice, and their wedges ain't bad. Parking can be a struggle at times, but overall good.
Pritika Sharma (Veg)
Have been here 3 times between 2017 and 2018. Excellent range for vegetarians. Fresh hummus and salads. Mezze platter is great to share between two. Good place for large groups.
Prashant Datt
This place is cool to hang out with some friends. They do shisha outside which is always popular (bit expensive though).<br/><br/>Food however is delicious. Their bread and dips are amazing!! Never disappoints.
Yuri
Very friendly and likable staff and everyone seems to be a hard worker.<br/><br/>I’d never tried Turkish cuisine, but I really loved their meal!<br/>My favorite one is Samsa(with spinach and cheese)<br/>Every meal is big portions and with lots of salad vegs which is generous.<br/><br/>Their apple tea is also good!
Prashant Gavri
One of the best Mediterranean restaurants in town, the wood fired pizzas and kebabs are the highlights of their menu, the hookah place downstairs has an amazing vibe for any fans of the sheesha pipe.
RL.P
Came here one Friday for dinner. <br/>I had looked at reviews beforehand to get a feel for the place & to be honest, wasn’t expecting much. Surprisingly, I was proven wrong. They accepted BYO with any main. I shared a Mezze platter- reasonable portions, enough for 2. Staff were helpful at making recommendations. Good shisha/ hangout spot downstairs- we ended up staying later than planned.
Divjot Singh
If it’s going to be a shisha night, it better be at Jaan ! Cool Place for chillaxing with your mates. I like their bread and Dips ...! Nevr tried the other food menu items thou
Dani
Ordered the Meat Mezze and it was definitely worth the money (in my opinion). The assortment of meats and variety of dips allowed for an endless mix of combinations! Flavours coupled perfectly together and i just loved the different condiments that were given-all in all a filling meal that I would definitely order again! quick and warming services, see you again Jaan!
Chantoya
My family and I ordered the vegetarian mezze platter and the vegetarian pizza to share. Both were absolutely delicious! The mezze was packed with flavour and colour, I particularly enjoyed the beetroot dip.
Bec
The food here is great and we really enjoyed it!! Super fresh and nice large portions! The sharing platter is amazing! However we wouldn't recommend the moussaka, there was a layer of uncooked dough on the top and not nice at all.<br/><br/>It's a shame that the service doesn't match up to the food and really lacks! We had ordered at least $80 worth of food and while we were still eating our entrees, the waitress brings out our mains even though she can see firstly there's no space at all on the table and secondly we weren't even half way through our entree! We ended up rushing to try to finish our entrees and then by the time we got to our mains it was going cold. Such poor service. She never checked on us or topped up our waters and for a place with so many staff on, you would expect much better!! <br/><br/>Apart from this the atmosphere is really average, loud techno music in the background but good place to go to if you want a casual good feed without any expectations of service. <br/><br/>
Rohit
Friend and I went here for dinner and shisha. Ambience is good, staff are friendly but take a while to get orders and always seem busy (perhaps short staffed?) ordered a shisha, tavuk shish, garlic bread and vegetarian mussakka. Decent tasting nothing special and not really filling for the price you pay. Garlic bread was bland.
Alexandra Light
Very impressed with the quick service and friendly staff. My meal was delicious - Would definitely come back and order same dish. I had the "Turlu Guvec" - Perfect meal for a cold winters evening. A tasty, hot pot tagine dish with tender lamb and veggies. Comes with rice and soft Turkish bread - Happy Customer

One of the most important steps in cooking food for others is to taste your food before you serve it.  If you wouldn't want to eat it, there's no point serving it up for others. It was evident the chef(s) who cooked our food this evening skipped this important step.<br/><br/>It's Saturday night, we are dressed in Tiger onesies after exiting a dress up party next door, we've had a bit to drink and we are famished. Jaan looks inviting, an old wooden character home with front decking for the alfresco dining lovers. This will do lovely we thought.<br/><br/>$110 later.<br/><br/>1x Babaganush. Flavour reminiscent of paper mache glue. Oh so bland.<br/><br/>1x Mixed grill platter. A plate full of rice and lettuce with pieces of chewy, tough meat scattered on top.<br/><br/>1x Freaky Fried Chicken. Yes, it's actually advertised this way. This actually wan't bad, the sole redeeming feature of our meal.<br/><br/>2x Glasses of wine.<br/><br/>1x Mint Shisha.<br/><br/>I find too many people complaining about restaurants on Zomato. I don't like writing reviews like this. I'd much rather write a glowing review that excites and inspires me, something that gets my creative juices flowing.  The truth is, this meal didn't inspire or excite me, we walked away feeling like we'd just been taken for a ride.  I would have had much more enjoyment out of a $12 kebab on K-Road than our meal at Jaan.<br/><br/>I ate at Gemmayze St a month ago. Jaan and Gemmayze both specialise in Lebanese/Turkish food however they're both on opposite ends of the culinary spectrum.<br/><br/>I would imagine Jaan would be great for a few glasses of wine while you chuff down your favourite Shisha with friends. I would not recommend Jaan if you're after good food.

Love Jaan! I came back here with a large group last night and was once again impressed with the atmosphere and delicious food 😋 everything was so tasty and the service was great. Next time: Shisha. Thank you!
Lia Yosaatmadja
It seems like jaan has quite a mix review, you either hate it or love it! <br/><br/>I never had a bad experience with jaan. I absolutely love this place! Friendly service, and amazing bread and dips, love the range of meats and i love their shisha!<br/>Its a great place to chill with shisha and apple tea!
Seymour Wade-Simpkins
Shit place after waiting 45 minutes for 1 shisha my table ordered food each and the waiter forgot my meal so I went hungry and everyone else ate. They didn’t apologize just told me that the waiter was new and didn’t know any better. By the time it would have been cooked after waiting our table would have been finished and the food was crap never coming again. The blankets smell like shit too. Not impressed
Freda Simkin
Visited Jaan for the first time last night. Loved it! Friendly, helpful staff and the food was awesome! Great tastes and presentation.  Reasonable cost too. We'll be back!
Aimee.
Love the shisha here. It doesn't contain too much nicotine because it didn't give me a major head rush. So many different flavours it's amazing. We got the Jaan special which was a mix of heaps of different flavours and also the kiwi apple mint. For two shishas and a drink each-!Split between six of us was only $17.
Y- Isik
I've been here with my family. This place offer fabulous food and great service. And perfect for family. They provided a large of Mediterranean food (especially Turkish). Definitely recommended place for family.
Domo Jay
Amazing food, anyone with good or bad taste in food would love to eat here. No regrets, taste buds went crazy. Once again thank you Jaan!!! Will definitely come here more than once
Christopher Anthony Peters
Great relaxed atmosphere, the Jaan special with an ice pipe is something all shisha smokers should try!Perfect for mates or dates, and larger gathering in the evenings. The staff are friendly and always ensure customers are satisfied. Add it on your list of places to go!
Sandip Prakasam
went to this place to have shisha and Green tea. nice Ambience. The fries we ordered were good - also reasonably priced. The shisha, we felt was a bit more expensive than other places. Overall, good place to hang out with friends and spend a bit of time smoking shisha.

JAAN <br/>THE FOODOLOGIST RATING:-<br/><br/> FOOD:- 1/5 (Bad, Tasteless ,frozen) <br/>SERVICE:- 1.5/5 (Delayed, Not efficient, )<br/><br/>AMBIANCE:- 3/5 (loud ,noisy, smoky, good view)<br/><br/>CLEANLINESS:- 5/5 (Clean,Outside can be dirty)<br/><br/>VALUE FOR MONEY :- 1.5/5 (Not worth for what you get)<br/><br/>FOOD POCKET DAMAGE:-***/***** (COST FOR 2:- $60 (Approx)<br/><br/>THE FOODOLOGIST REVIEW:-<br/><br/>I had often been to this place with friends for when they used to go for sheesha . But had never tried the food until recently . When you enter the restaurant  its looks like a old house which has been commercialized to a restaurant so the rustic feel is good . And the dinning area as good views . Down the stairs you have the outside seating which i smoky so don't there until you enjoy a sheesha . The first level has a display counter with all kebabs and fresh cut vegetables which looks mouth watering and that what made me try the food .Was with a couple of friends i ordered the meat moussaka which was absolutely bad . I love Mediterranean cuisine especially Greek .This was bad on all level it came pipping out which is because it was put in the microwave that what happened when its sees the microwave unlike the oven. It was definitely not fresh  the meat was dry and the sauce tasteless. My friend had ordered some chicken which was as dry as the Sahara desert and the salad was equally bad and sour the vinaigrette tasted sour and off .Overall bad food experience i dont know because wether we went during lunch but a good restaurant should have good food all the time .Stick to the sheesha
Zenobia Khan
One of the most chill places to come and relax and have some shisha with friends, also great to see friendly and helpful staff that are always cheerful to be around, foods really good too!!
Peter Scanlan
Excellent service. They provided us with blankets as it was a bit cold. Great food and atmosphere. Highly recommended. It was popular the night we were there.
HItesh Kapoor
Had an awesome chicken wrap at jaans for just $10 along with super amazing customer service .....would love to come back again and again .....
ChefZ
Ordered takeaway. Moussaka was bad, not authentic at all, very poor flavors. The meat mezze was ok. Fried chicken - big no no. Isgara kofte is highly recommended.
Sanchit Gupta
Amazing hang out place. Best sheesha in Auckland. Food is good. Staff is super friendly... say hi to superstars Mani, Amit and Salman.<br/>Must visit.
Sobia M
Jaan is like my second home, I'm always there for down time and to socialise. I've celebrated my birthday there for about 4 years in a row now.<br/><br/>Excellent ambience, great shisha and what tops everything is the people, the friendly owners, the senior staff members who I've become friends with and regular customers who I bump into.<br/><br/>Food wise, I'd recommend the Chicken Tavuk Shisha.
Tamara Jordan
We come here every year for my husband's birthday... and every year we get the same thing... chicken woodfired pizza and a mixed grill.. too good try anything else 😂 love this place!!
Nick Haig
Have been going to Jaan for ages and it is always delicious and made fresh. The chicken wraps are awesome and the people are super friendly too.
Swetha
We went on a really quiet day hence got what we ordered fast. The pizza and cocktails there are very nice, there is off street parking which is convenient, good place to go with friends
Sakshi Chadha
If you're a vegetarian, you might not find a lot of appealing options on the menu. The food is average (vegetarian food). Although, they do garnish it well and make it look good.
Hangry Viz
A place I regularly visit and always delighted to go back to. Whether you're after sheesha and some drinks to start the night off, or you're after that delicious hearty meal to dine on, jaan has it all. <br/><br/>Lovely seating options and a great menu choice. The only struggle with this place is finding a park on a busy night!
Sue Adams
Great food. Lovely family atmosphere. Great service. Everything you could possibly want.<br/>If you're into Turkish food. .... here's where you need to be 😀
S&G Take Auckland
Awesome place for food and relaxing with friends. Everything on the menu is great but my absolute favorite is the muska . I'll never be able to recreate it at home so Jaan is the only place to go eat it. The portion size is good , they give you a lot of salad on the side, 4 muska and some yogurt . Love this place will always go back . The owner and his family are sooooo lovely too.
Paul.d.alexander
Jan, what a great place. The staff are so friendly and welcoming, the decor is great, atmosphere wonderful. Great for big functions with friends or a quiet dinner. The food is always beautiful. I will be back! Keep up the great work.
Ahmed K. Alkazaz
This is a great place to have dinner and shisha really nice and friendly staff can't complain of everything when ever I come my shisha will be ready and hot food the thing I like
Mariam Omar
I'm a regular customer of jaan for many years. One pf the best place to dine in. I love their chargrill selections very tasty. Their staffs are very friendly. Fridays and Saturdays they gets very busy so food can take sometime. But it's worthed. I definitely recommend Jaan to everyone 🖒
Leo Dilshan
Overpriced shisha with horrible customer service . Bought ourselves a good shisha so never going back there . Do shisha at home . Much cheaper much better quality ! <br/>Their customer service was good before they got popular . And before the acting manager roles changed . They r all pricks now . Went from average good customer service to worst ever customer service .
Usar Sabri
Amazing service and amazing shisha and food love the people there very friendly, their shisha is one of the best and define go to when it comes to a good service, location is one of the best too A++++++
Bilal Jumaah
A bit expensive for what they offer, overall its nice but they should definitely bring the prices lower. I usually go there for shisha but you can really get the exact same shisha for half their price somewhere else. For $30 shisha in Auckland you get a much better view / environment
Jennifer Sharplin
Wonderful! A super friendly welcome, made us feel right at home. Super good coffees & made a great cold coffee and a yummy traditional Baklava dessert. Left Happy Thank you
Taif Al-Refai
No one in town for food and shisha i love this place just like home really good, if you really want to enjoy come here A++ so friendly staff and owner, cant complains for anything
Ashley
Probably the worst experience I have had in a restaurant for quite some time to be honest. We were a large booking so understandable that our meals take longer and serving us as well as the restaurant is a lengthy process. However, it took an hour for a waitress to even take a drinks order.. and they only asked for half the tables order. We had to call another waiter over to finish taking the drinks order. And then had to repeat this same process in order to actually have a food order taken. It took 2 hours before we were actually served food. Multiple times we had to call staff over as we were never seen to for drinks, entrees, desserts etc. The business is definitely not reaching its full potentially; if the staff were more attentive to the customers they would make more money by actually selling us more products. In spite of all of that - the food is delicious! Absolutely amazing! Big props for the food! Probably the only reason I haven't given a lower score. It's unfortunate that the floor staff made it an unpleasant visit.
Samir Ahadi
Very friendly staff with amazing middleeastern food . One of the best places in Auckland to have shish kebab . Also a great place to hang out with all your friends and smoke some good shisha . Highly recommend family and friends to try it out :)
Vickygarg214
Well after hearing really good reviews about this place I thought I should visit once, then We been jaan Restaurent last week. On arrival we were greeted very well & food was just mouth watering and after delicious food we tasted different flavour of shisha. Turkish delight was an amazing sweet ever tasted. <br/>Last but not least customer service was exceptionally brilliant given by Mani.
Hemal Thaker
Yummm..... lip-smacking food. Tasted turkish food this evening  which was the best one I had in Auckland. Staff was polite & well friendly. Would like to visit soon.
Sian Kershaw
My partner and I went here yesterday, as soon as we got there we were given such a warm greeting. We both enjoyed our meal so much and were annoyed we hadn't found this place sooner. We would highly recommend to all as it was just a lovely atmosphere and brilliant food. Thank you so much!!
Mary Edward
Family owned business, very friendly, the have the best food and great Shisha! I really recommend it if you haven't been yet! Easy parking too
Marcel Mathew
Im a regular customer of jaan for many years. The food is always been fresh and delicious. I think they serve the best turkish food in Auckland. The price is reasonable and we get a good portion in each plates.<br/>I also feel that they have an excellent customer service.<br/>I recommend jaan to everyone for enjoying the heavenly food.......
Robert
This place is a rare find and I have brought many friends here. They have always been impressed and delighted. The entree meat mezze platter for two is amazing. So many delicious tasty morsels. And there is a dish to die for on the main menu. A kind of lamb stew with egg plant called turlu guvenc. It's stunning. I haven't tried their whole menu yet but look forward to it. Also their shisha is the best I've tried. Recommend double apple and mint.
Mercan Kazankiran
Amazing food. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. Mezze platters are little bit of everything from the appertizers so best to share with friends. Also chargrilled selection are highly recommended.
Aditya Veer Singh
Always loved this place as they have the best shisha in the town and even really good food . Best hangout café. Never had a problem with anything in the café. The only problem i've found with this place is that it isn't open late night .
Avi Yabaluri
Good location, superb ambience mainly due to the view from the dining area! Now, I can see a lot of negativity on Zomato for Jaan due to sheesha experiences and so forth... I've never gone here for that nor does it feel like a place for a (drunk) "night out with the boys, so I cannot say much.<br/><br/>What it is, though,... is a place for great food! From the freshly heated bread, the very succulent & flavourful meat to the yum range of dips & decent amount of salad... Real enjoyable stuff! Looks good, tastes better! The quantity & quality are definitely excellent value! I've certainly stuffed myself full and then some.
Sonia Pereira
My experience wasn't that great here, we reached the cafe by 10:00pm and the staff we about to close because there were no customers and we were fine with it as my friends wanted to smoke some shisha. We ordered a pot and had to compulsorily order a drink for each of the people in the group even if we didn't actually want to, being a cafe it does not have WiFi for the customers, which is a bit of weird being in the 21st century. We wanted to have the shisha peacefully but were reminded that we just have 10mins left even if the time was 11:00pm while the time mentioned on the profile is until 12:00am, you'll need to up your game, however, the cleanliness was top-notch cause of a lovely girl continuously cleaning the place. Haven't tasted the food so can't comment on that. The competitors out there give shishas at a cheaper rate and you don't need to order anything with it as well...all I wanna say is that you need to keep the people happy to keep your cash box full.P.S. - if I wanna come back, I'd come back for that lovely girl  :P
Malcolmdeee
Initial impressions of the upstairs area was decent, but downstairs was pretty average. Ended up costing $50 for shisha and 3 glasses of coke that didn't even have any fizz. Only thing that saved the experience was that the shisha was decent. Made the mistake of not looking up reviews first. Will probably never return.
Aucklandfoodie
Went at 11 as they open then but nothing was prepared or ready. We ordered our food which took an hour to arrive. Ordered Adana shish kebab and instead of rice in our platter got only bread and when asked where the rice was they said they didn't have any so gave bread - Would've been nice for them to mention it when we placed the order. The food was still really yummy. Hygiene wise - not happy. Lipstick mark on our cup, hair on baklava plate. Would not come again sadly :(
Selina EverHungry Nihalani
When you come to Jaan, don't expect fancy decor. It's one of those "feel good" places because it's a great hangout spot. It's buzzing every evening especially Fridays & Saturdays. The Meat Mezze Platter is my go to when here. The food is a little pricey but it's tasty!! However, price of the tea's expensive. Not worth it really, but it is compulsory for everyone on the table to order at least 1 drink. <br/><br/>Sam is absolutely fantastic. Calm and composed even during the rush. Very friendly and bubbly! <br/><br/>Unfortunately some of the other staff are not as friendly or welcoming as she is. Loosen up a little!

We went to the movies at the Lido I Epsom and then decided to go back to Great North Road in Kingsland, haven't been there for a while and decided to just chance it, with the AB's playing tonight thought it would be easy to get parking..... Wrong, but managed to fluke one. Wasn't busy when we walked in. Efficiently seated, offered menus but had to prompt for the drinks menu. Lemon infused iced water appeared quickly and efficiently. Orders taken in a timely manner. I ordered mixed grill and my wife lamb tagline. Mine was great value for money, lamb, beef and chicken and heaps of it for $27.50, my wife's had 4 pieces of lamb lots of vegies, but no apricots, dates and very few nuts. Pointed this out to the waiter, but not sure if it registered. Won't be back!!!

First one of the waiters was not friendly at all he kept pushing for us to order Shisha without even giving us a table. We ordered English Breakfast tea and were charged $7. They told us the price increases after 9 pm which has never happened before. They kept sending us the wrong orders. The restaurant is not organised rip people off and have rude wait staff.<br/>The only nice staff was the new staff member and it was his first day.<br/>Not going there again

Wow (bad wow), food was ok but not filling, also promised bread with meal but never made it to the plate, service was slow and beyond unprofessional, kept having wrong orders coming to our table, prices went up like there's no tomorrow (tea costs $7 now!!!) milk not included! They also charge for Sheesha mouth pieces now! Never going there again.

We went with a large group and were told we needed to have the set 3 course menu for $32. This was a joke as we ended up with three small platters for entrees with barely any bread to feed nearly 30 people (we had booked so they knew numbers in advance). The dips were nice but it was a struggle to get them to bring out the correct amount of food for how many people we had. The mains were okay but the vegetarian mussaka was apparently very average. Dessert consisted of 1 tiny piece of Turkish delight each. We were then stung an extra $8 each for a corkage fee. The fact that the meal cost $40 plus wine was an absolute joke.

Don't waste your breath, didn't even get a chance to sit on a table, been here a couple times with mates and it's been okish. But when I get told it's compulsory to order a drink by each person sitting at a table even if you don't want one is pretty much bullying alcoholic or not. not to mention the air of self importance around the staff in the place, snooty rude and will never come back, overall not a good experience or look.<br/><br/>Thanks guys.<br/><br/>Off to a better place for sheesha and food at old fort by caravanserai only 3-5 mins up the road. Give them a look up for service / quality.<br/><br/>Ps: had also offered to buy more drinks by just one person but was declined ? <br/><br/>👎🏽

Food - 4/5<br/>Drink - 5/5<br/>Ambiance - 5/5<br/>Service - 5/5<br/><br/>I adore Jaans ! It has become a regular meetup spot for multiple groups of my friends now.<br/>Sam is marvelous at her job and the new waiters are lovely too.<br/>Once we, 3,  had ordered vodka lemonlime&bitters which unfortunately wasn't to our liking and the owner had taken our order at the beginning of the night, at the end he asked it if was too our liking and I blurted out no - it was good but not 100% and he waved the  cost of all three. Now here of course money isn't a factor but the attitude is. Big time.<br/><br/>Apart from that last week we called just for an inquiry, didn't make a booking but midday through they found out they were having water issues like the whole Kingsland area hence being closed for that Friday and had the courtesy to call us and let us know. <br/><br/>Best buys: Meat platter, Pizza and bubblegum shisha :)

On first arriving to Jaan my first thought was "whoa this place is really cool". It's an old converted house with a bright red inviting door, and the inside feels warm and cosy with lots of red and orange tones. If you sit at the back it also has a pretty cool view which I wasn't expecting.<br/>We were there for an early dinner with a group of us and were seated straight away and promptly provided with menus and water. Our waiter was friendly and efficient.<br/>My partner and I shared the meltizano cheesy eggplant which I probably wouldn't get again. It was ok but it was literally just a large slice of eggplant with some sauce and cheese (also a bit difficult to share). We also got the vegetarian mezze which came with a large variety of tapas like dishes including falafel, dolmades, hummus, bread, olives etc. Everything on this plate was delicious, we all particularly liked the babaganush. I couldn't fault anything on it. It was also well priced. <br/>We also got a tiramisu for dessert. To be honest I could take or leave this - the menu didn't say it was a cheesecake like tiramisu so I was a bit disappointed. It was yum but not what I was expecting and it almost seemed store bought.<br/>However with everything else being so good the dessert didn't damper my experience. I think next time the vege mezze would be best as a starter to share and then a main each and no dessert. <br/>We will definitely be back

This restaurant has lovely views of the city and a nice ambience. Have come here many times as the food is great and seems high quality. Service can sometimes be a little slow. Staff are always very attentive and helpful.
Danny
After waiting for 20 minutes for our order, we found out that our food had gone to the wrong table (our friendly neighbours who had proceeded to eat the food anyway). By the time the staff finally figured out how to send the correct order to the correct table, an hour had passed. And what we got was some warm fried chicken, a platter of cold bread served with hummus that might as well have come from a supermarket and a mixed meat platter having an identity crisis.

Insensitive, Rude and Horrible Customer Service. <br/><br/>I went there for Sheesha and Food. The restaurant makes their own rules up when it comes to pricing. If you order a sheesha, you have to buy a drink. The drinks in the evening (At the restaurant's convenience) double in prices. It's $$8 for a pot of tea. It's criminal and the staff have no justification when you question this made up rule. <br/><br/>The sheesha is horrible and took 45 minutes from the time of order just to find out it was incorrect flavour. <br/><br/>The service is horrible and they really don't care about their customers.
Sumit
This place deserves no less then 5 stars! I have been going here for years. The food is of the best quality but mainly I go with friends for Sheesha. I have tired many many many places for Sheesha but this one is by far the best one is all of Auckland. They have gained my loyalty. I have recommended Jaan to countless friends and they have brought their friends!<br/><br/>I must say the owner of the place is a great guy. Always up for sorting out any problems I maybe having.<br/><br/>Must go!
A Tale Of Two Tummies
It's somewhat difficult to review Jaan, as we went with a large group and there was a LOT of drinking and shisha involved - and let's face it, all food tastes amazing when you're treading on the other side of tipsy. To be honest, despite my eventual state at the end of the night, I do remember that the chicken was delicious - though again, that could be the alcohol glorifying the food. The cocktails we tried were amazing too - they do one of the best mojitos I've tried (the photo below is a martini, but by the stage we got to the mojitos, we were somewhat beyond taking photos). What I do remember though is the amazingly long wait times. I know we were like a party of 20+, but the wait times were insane - whether it was drinks, food, shisha - items were arriving a good 20-30min after you ordered them or didn't arrive at all. Again, we were a large party, so I accept some delay in items arriving, but when items are being forgotten completely, that is somewhat unacceptable. One of our party even started helping to bring food/drinks out, just to speed things along. In saying that, the staff were very friendly and seemed to be relatively competent, so it might've just been a case of being drastically understaffed. All-in-all, we went with an average rating as it's not a place we would rush back to, but then we wouldn't avoid returning either. The experience might be better in smaller groups.

A cool Middle Eastern restaurant and shisha spot in Kingland. A converted colonial house, not overly decorated or themed, but had a homely feel due to the friendly staff and kitchen in full site upon entry. <br/><br/>This restaurant serves all the classic Middle Eastern dishes with all the accompaniments you can think of. I recommend the mixed plate which has a little bit of all their main dishes. Apart from the food, Jaan is a popular spot to hang out with friends in the downstairs deck area and share a shisha and a good peppermint tea. Prices are very reasonable and there are practically no wait times. <br/><br/>Overall, a really relaxed place to hang out with friends and enjoy a shisha and good Middle Eastern food.

İ have been here a couple of times and really enjoyed it. The atmosphere is cosy and the food is quite tasty. Especially i love the organic food which they cook on custom made Turkish charl grill. Friendly staff and reasonable pricing. Would definetely be back.
Kris
Another great find. The food tastes so authentic and the service is great. The Babaganoush was sublime, the slow cooked lamb shank was tasty and aromatic and the chicken grill was succulent. Will definitely go back!
William McLeod
The food was amazing, this is the best Turkish food I've had in years, Highly recommend this restaurant, as soon as I arrived I was treated with the utmost respect, the staff were very friendly thoroughly enjoyed my experience'<br/><br/>looking forward to next time<br/><br/>William Mcleod

Average shisha. Supposedly ordered gum (my regular) didn't taste good at all. Charcoal takes forever to arrive along with drinks & food. Staff are good and try their best. However still poor. Wouldn't recommend.
Danny
It seems like the perfect business plan:<br/>Step 1. Start a shisha bar/restaurant.<br/>Step 2. Get your customers high on that cocktail of drink and drugs.<br/>Step 3. Serve the intoxicated customers substandard food.<br/>Step 4. Rinse and repeat.<br/>Step 5. MONEY!<br/><br/>They almost got away with it. I may not be fond of shisha, but I am fond of food.<br/><br/>After waiting for 20 minutes for our order, we found out that our food had gone to the wrong table (our friendly neighbours who had proceeded to eat the food anyway). By the time the staff finally figured out how to send the correct order to the correct table, an hour had passed. And what we got was some warm fried chicken, a platter of cold bread served with hummus that might as well have come from a supermarket and a mixed meat platter having an identity crisis.<br/><br/>That was just about enough for us. We decided to cut our losses and leave Jaan as we found it. Standing by the side of the road in a cloud of smoke.

From the road, you'd never know that Jann has an amazing indoor/outdoor area down the back that's perfect for a weekday lunch.<br/><br/>I was a bit skeptical at first, expecting little more than a deconstructed kebab that's triple the price just because it's served on a plate, not wrapped in paper. Oops - never judge a kebab by it's wrapper!<br/><br/>There is a good variety of dishes, with lots of flavours and spice combinations that are punchy and unusual. The lamb I had was marinated just the right amount to make it tender and tasty, without being too overbearing on the flavour of the lamb itself. I'd happily try one of everything on the menu.

First time here as a group and NO ONE was impressed with their customer service. The lady at the counter didn't say hi, didn't provide us with menus or ask what we were after or how many people we had. <br/><br/>When we said we wanted to have shisha (and dinner) -every. single. flavour we chose was "unavailable" which was absolutely ridiculous. And they apparently served NO alcohol. Just juices, fizzy drinks and/or water. What the heck. <br/><br/>She told us to go downstairs and just pointed us in that direction. Took forever for them to give us our menus so we ended up going back upstairs and got them ourselves. Shisha took a good 30-45mins to arrive and they weren't even that busy!! And another hour for the lady to give us a few more mouth pieces. <br/><br/>When we placed our order, one of us said that it would be nice if we could get our meals out ASAP as they had plans after dinner. Took them a good 30 mins for the DRINKS to arrive! Like what?? Really?? We ordered juice! How hard is it to pour JUICE??<br/><br/>The food came out before our drinks. Overall the food was pretty good. No complaints there. 1 star rating for the food. But the wait and that lady who served us was a definite 0/10<br/><br/>Will not be coming back. Ever.

Do enjoy going here for the sheesha, really cool ambience about this place, the food is good but a lil over priced for what it is i feel. Although that has not stopped me from going there various times. Overall a good place to gather with friends.
Mat
The environment of this place is cosy and nice... However, the shisha is usually not that good... Last time we waited a good 20+ minutes for coal and I complained at the counter as this is usually the case when you want to have shisha here... The guy just argued with me about letting my friend come in with no ID which was irrelevant to what I was explaining :S obviously the staff need better customer service manners. Additionally I do not appreciate the dodgy worker who is ostensibly too friendly. The food is not great either... I think they just don't care about quality nor do they care about customers. Such a bad experience - I haven't been back ever since.
Food Food Foodie Food
I kind of dig that this place just feels like you're hanging out at someone's house who happens to make pretty good Turkish food. If someone at their house made you any of the food you'd tell everyone 'my friend made me the best authentic Turkish food'.. And that's what this place is.<br/>Sitting outside on a nice night is the way to go.
Paul Lee
We had just finished watching the game at Eden park and thought we would try to dine out at Jaan as people have been mentioning this spot to me for a while so I took the family. Unfortunately, they were not selling alcohol which was a little damper to the night, but I must say in all honesty. The "Char Grill" blew us away. Food is amazing, preparation is clean and staff are more than welcoming how it should be. Highly recommended. The mixed grill was delicious, my wife had some other kind of meat that I cannot pronounce, but it was better than mine. <br/>Top 2 restaurants for quality of food in Kingsland "Hands Down"

I went in dinner last night with my co-workers and I loved the mix grill, the meat taste amazing must be the that charcoal grill. If you ever around Kingsland and an you want to have a decent size meal with good price, jaan is the place to eat and relax. We are definitely going back soon.
Andrey Korzh
Great authentic middle eastern food, had char grilled chicken was very surprised by a good size of the meal. Apple-mint shisha after meal was amazing, would defiantly come back again.
Jason Prasad
Waited for more than 30mins for two shishas. When we received them finally the coal was not even lit and there was no mouth pieces, I waited for about another 5 minutes to receive mouthpieces. We then see that one of the drinks we ordered have hair and black dirt inside it. We go and complain about this and advise we will not pay for the shishas as we never smoked them. The lady at the counter advised that the reason why the coal was cold was because they were cooking food? (Shouldn't it be hot if your cooking on charcoal)? <br/><br/>Anyways we had to pay for 1 shishas and the 3 drinks we ordered which I didn't want to make a fuss about. I used to think this was one of the best places to go to for shisha and food. Not anymore. And never will go back.
Saman Bigy
Went for dinner with my family today. We were greeted by the nicest of staff at the door.We advised that it was my brothers birthday and without hesitation they send us a complimentary drink for the birthday boy.we sat down and ordered and their food was absolutely amazing. i have not tried char grilled kebab like this  in new Zealand. It tasted just like we had it in Istanbul. When we were finished the staff asked us not to leave as they had a surprise for us. Their whole staff came out with a cake and started singing a birthday song. What a amazing experience. Thank you jaan for a amazing dinner !!Will definitely come again
Jessica Harris
I wasn't impressed. The food is pricey and while the meals are a decent size it just wasn't anything special. <br/><br/>Frankly, the server was nice enough but made me feel uncomfortable about not ordering more. He also didn't give us much time to relax or think about our order.<br/><br/>I was rather disappointed in how bland the lamb was. <br/><br/>My boyfriend had an allergic reaction (he's allergic to fish and someone in our party had seafood pizza) which tells me they don't clean their pans very well.<br/><br/>Anyway, it wasn't a traumatizing experience, but I'm in no rush to go back here.
Cmys001
Where is the negative score button? Worst restaurant ever. Told us to not talk loudly because we are disturbing the other people in the restaurant and guess what there was no one else in the place! Worst customer service ever! And the staff look like they are doing us a favour by serving us. And the management don't care about the over prices and below average food they serve. Most definitely the worst restaurant ever.

My first visit here and was not disappointed..to start with had a simple dish Hummus served with pita bread ..was yum..mains had iskender kebabs ..was nice too
Samir Ranchhod
Good tasty well presented food. We went on Mother's Day and we ordered wanting tappas. They were essentially the same as the entrees so worked out a little expensive. Authentic Turkish food.
STRADS
How could one not use the word Turkish in Turkish coffee, Turkish Delight, Turkish bread...?  Turkish food is just special.  <br/><br/>It was a terribly busy Saturday evening before Mother's Day on this part of New North Road. There were quite a lot of restaurants along the road - Taiko (Jap), Mekong (Laos), Little India, French, Belgian, pubs... - but there seemed to be people everywhere. It's my first time at Jaan Turkish Cafe. It looks clean, bright & warm with wooden tables & chairs in the rather spacious dining area; a staircase in the centre leads down possibly to another dining area. The 8 slices of Turkish bread with 3 different dips were really nice. Calamari with salad was average. Mix grill was terrific - the lamb was tender, juicy & rich in taste. Iskender looked somewhat like (but of course it's not) chicken & lamb in mild red curry. Chicken Pizza was cheesy & had a very crispy base. Turkish coffee & Turkish Delight of 5 different kinds ended our meal on a high note. <br/>(Food - 4.5/5; Service - 4/5; Ambience - 3.5/5)

My friends and I have been going to this place for the past 7 years and the experience has been mixed but overall pretty ok. However, after last week Friday, it is safe to say that we will not be going back there anymore. We went for Shisha, drinks and food. It was a busy Friday night and the service was average as we had expected. After some time of sitting at our table, one of the waiters came and told us (while taking the shisha from my friends hand) that we had our shisha for 2hrs and that our time was up and it was the norm for them to take it after 2hrs. I asked how come we weren't informed of this when we ordered the shisha. He then went on to say that even when he was not working there this was normal. He casually brushed us off and left us there. Interesting experience...Interesting coz we had been to Jaan on several Fridays before and never had this happen to us. I am sure losing one customer won't impact them but I thought I would share my experience. Cheers..

Shisha pipes need to be cleaned or replaced. There used to be a time when the shisha used to go for hours, now they finish with in an hour. The food is not all that good. The kebab store across the road has good food.<br/>The hefty price is for location and looks of the premise.

It was a busy night and we were in hurry to go to cinema. The waitress said they will be able to make it fast, so we ordered meat platter. The plating is awesome, lamb and pizza was awesome until I found out that the chicken wings still uncooked which made me disappointed and sick because I ate a bit. When we complain about it the waitress offered a piece of sweet cake that they sell as a compliment and still charge for the food as their chef said the chicken with blood was a cooked chicken.
SS
I'm here regularly - it's my go-to shisha place if I'm too lazy to make one myself. The food here is good too, especially anything lamb! I can't say I've had anything other than the mixed grill and pizza, and they're both okay. Wine list could be better. Not too much to pick from. Coffee is not so great too - but I'm happy to keep coming back for shisha. <br/><br/>Service is good, they're all fun and friendly. Bonus :)
Chloe
Great environment, wonderful setup, lovley to look at feels like you have travelled to turkey. Great food, fresh and full of flavour, perfect place to meet up with friends and socialise. Will definitely be returning soon :)
Seth Blissworth Baguion
Been coming to this place regularly for a few years now. Definitely a go to place for me and my mates to chill, catch up over some Sheesha and chips or wedges. Their chips and wedges are the perfect crispiness for my liking. Only ever had their Salmon and Pepperoni pizza's before which were nice. Nice atmosphere with the lighting and music. Although this place does get too crowded now and it's really hard to talk over the noise. One more thing, this place needs to put some sort of ventilation in their toilets. It's too stuffy.
Alexandra Gosling
My husband and I ,used to love this place, food was really good ,  affordable,a nice place ..not too crowded .and every time we celebrated something we chose this place , but last time we went there , food was very disappointing .I think they made a change to the menu. The lamb I ordered was severely overcooked , coupled with mash potatoes and a soup, the combination was horrible . Eventually the mash potato dissolved and combined with the soup creating an unrecognisable paste which , with the lamb , was hard to eat. <br/>We complained but only received " im sorry " as a respond, we paid the bill but definitely we will never come back. very unhappy costumer , and celebration ruined !

Can't say enough about this Resturant <br/>From woe to go awesome service food ambience & value .. Will totally recommend to friends & family thanks for making our first visit the best ever <br/>Look forward to next time Rav

I went to Jaan last night (11-01-2015 / 9.20pm) with 6 of my friends. We reserved a table in advanced. We were late for our reservation due to getting lost on the way which does happen, the only reason why we went is because my friend recommended that it was a great restaurant, so we made the trip out. The service was very in your face, and not genuine. The whole restaurant seemed unorganised. These things are pretty minor and the end of the day anyone would have forgotten about it. We were seated and our waiter Richard was very intrusive and in your face. The ambiance of the restaurant was okay. We ordered 2 shisha which were great! Myself and other friends ordered our starters and dinner because we were starving and the others were just easing into the night enjoying the shisha and had not decided on what to eat yet . As we waited for our food, the actual manager and owner of the restaurant came up to the table asked if we were having a good time, which we were, i thought he was going to tell us to get comfortable etc, but he went the total opposite direction. He told us that "it's okay to reserve a table but, i expect everyone to order dinner and drinks because im losing money". I was so shocked that he came to our table, to sugar coat that we werent spending enough money at his restaurant, and our presence there was a waste of his time. We were all so offended and shocked that he was "allowing" us to sit in his restaurant this one time and eat, but next time we will have to order more. Well unfortunately for you Jaan, but we were definitely going to order more, more food , drinks and shisha. It was shocking too because when we sat down we had already ordered more than $100 worth of food and shisha and we DISTINCTLY told the waiter Richard that we were going to order more when the rest of of the group had decided. I don't have a clue of what kind of money hungry place they're running there, but they obviously see their customers as dollar signs and don't genuinely love serving amazing cultural food and service. After the manager and my friend had a little discussion, the manager came back with 1 free corona for his rudeness. I know a lot about hospitality, I mean I understand where he was coming from, the industry for hospitality is getting a bit hard. But to assume out of desperation and come to our table to passively tell us were not spending enough money that's worth his time is so ridiculous and rude. This is no exageration of events but what literally happened. Once he was gone we felt so uncomfortable and unwelcomed we wanted to leave. But we had just gotten our fresh shisha so we didnt want to waste it. Our waiter kept on being pushy and we noticed all the rest of the staff would keep staring at our table and constantly ask us if we were okay, every 15 minutes. By this point we wanted to just be left alone. We decided not to bother spending more money than we would have because of the whole service and how the owner made us feel. On the upside the food we had was amazing! A little over priced for basic food you could get a nice gastro bar for cheaper. But all in all, were never coming back. You have given us a great horrible restaurant story to tell our friends and family, your food was great but your service and vibe ruined our entire night.

I love eating at Jaan, its my favorite restaurant, I moved to NZ a year ago from Sydney and Jaan is the only good Mediterranean around. I will be taking all my staff there for our office Xmas dinner this year. thank you Jaan for making my friends from Australia feel so comfortable. They loved the vegetarian options the waiter gave them. Really recommend The tangine.
Ninjunkie
Had late lunch today here at Jaan. The place is nice and great view from the window. I ordered chicken shish and it was nicely done. The chicken was moist and good flavors. It smelled really nice too. My partner had vegetable moussaka but was not as great as the chicken. It didn't have much taste and it didn't quite stuck together. We didn't try any drinks though as we have planned to have it somewhere else after lunch. Overall the experience was good but not great. The service was really good though. The waiter was keen and passionate.

Seesha , pizza or sandwiches . its a pretty alright place to go with your mates if into evening outs . Not too fancy but pretty decent place to be at .
Brandy Jenkins
Went in at lunchtime for the $10 wood-fired pizza Italiano. Hardly any toppings and burnt base. We were one of two tables and I can understand why. Felt disappointed. The ambience seems dated but then I guess that the arab feel they want to give it? I can see it being busy cause they do hookah pipes but not for the pizza we had.
Mia Hendrix
Was intending to go to Thai for date night but thought we'd be spontaneous and their Tapas menu sounded yummy so we went here instead. Ordered 4 dishes to start with and the food was so incredibly average. It was bland and boring and we waited a very long time for them. I definitely wouldn't recommend spending that amount on food that average/bad when everywhere else in Kingsland serves a pretty decent feed. Also service was so completely all over the show and unprofessional. Normally I wouldn't mind but it was realllly bad.
Alina Kuzentsova
I recently discovered Jaan and absolutely loved their food and shishe. The atmosphere is also great. They have a very nice deck out the back and I even had my farewell party there. All my guests were served promptly and enjoyed the food. I highly recommend to try their wood fire oven baked pizza and charcoal grilled meat. Service...I didn't come across any rude staff. Overall, I think it's a nice place to go for group dinner or shishe and drinks.
Melissa Roberts
Myself and colleagues from my place of employment in Kingsland have been going to Jaan for the past three years on average one evening a week most weeks for takeaway wraps as on takeaway menu, several times in the past few months the orders have been wrong when got back to office, sauces wrong.<br/>And today when ordering they advised that they have changed what is in the wraps and now includes just lettuce meat and sauce, they are removing the mesculin, tabouli and cabbage. This is in our opinion what made Jaan wraps stand out and what made us love the authentic flavours it provided. We ate it tonight, it was just iceberg lettuce which had become soggy and limp. When offering feedback to staff, they didn't seem to know what to do with that or assure me it would be followed up or give me the option of speaking to manager. <br/>Unfortunately we will not be going back.
Ali
This place has the worst service I have ever experienced. It seems as they're doing you a favour by letting us eat there. They are very rude and unorganised. I would not recommend to anyone. The food is very average and way overpriced. I have been here more than once and had the same terrible experience each time. I will not be going again!
Jason
Walked into the restaurant with a group. Immediately the waiter got up and talked to us with a very rude an arrogant attitude as if we were doing them a favor. We asked for a table for 5 and the waiter told us to order at the counter. We asked to be seated before we make an order and the waiter refused?? He told us we had to order now. We then told him again that we would like to be seated before we make an order. Not until then we were shown to our table. <br/><br/>By this stage we were very annoyed and decided to just leave. Not the first time we've been here and definitely not the first time we've had issues with service.
Janine Eastwood
The portions were generous and the food was good, the service was fine and quick. Prices were 25-30 for a main which is up there, but on the whole a very decent meal.
Christo Van Der Walt
Why have you become so expensive? It's now probably the most expensive restaurant in Kingsland. We use to go there a lot but unfortunately they've taken advantage of being busy and pushed their prices up by almost twice.
Akaash Ram
Really depends.. Come if you want to hang with a group of good friends. Wouldn't recommend if you're looking for a quick bite. Pizza's are all I've had and while the menu's pretty pricey, the food is good. My rating is based on experiences with groups of friends, never have I gone alone or with one other person (always 4+). Service is pretty slow and inconsistent but once again, it's a good place to chill in ambience.
Daniel Martin
Went on a public holiday and had a pretty bad experience. It was a public holiday, but very quiet. Walked in to a supervisor reprimanding an employee quite strongly on the open floor. We were seated quickly, but took about 20 minutes for a waiter to come take our orders despite the fact the restaurant was not very busy - it would have been impossible to miss us! Then another 5 minutes for someone to bring over some room temperature water in warm glasses (it's sorta a nice touch to have some water before the 20 minute wait). <br/><br/>One of our party received their food almost immediately while the rest of us received it 15 minutes later... it would have been appreciated if we'd received our food at the same time and been able to eat together.<br/><br/>Food was ok, overpriced for what it is. Had a pretty nice, somewhat spartan vege pizza that lacked the pinenuts described on the menu. If pinenuts are why the pizzas are so expensive then it might be a good idea not to run out!<br/><br/>The unfortunate thing about it is that none of the staff saw fit to apologise for the hold up, or even acknowledge it. OK food, bad pricing and pretty abysmal service all round. Won't be back.

We like coming here because the food is always tasty and the service is very friendly and attentive. We ordered the lamb iskender and the falafel kebab. They both came with a generous side dish of tabouli and fresh vegetables plus yoghurt. Well done, Jaan!

My partner really summed this dinning experience up by one word, "underwhelming".<br/><br/>Service, whilst not bad, was a little ad hoc.<br/>I have tasted better food in other Turkish restaurants.<br/>The actual restaurant was OK.<br/>I wouldn't recommend this place. Just average.

Lovely fresh food cooked perfectly. Our mains were served quite quickly as the restaurant wasn't busy. However as delicious as our meals were we felt they were over priced or they could have given more meat and rice for what we paid. The service was friendly but they checked up on us too many times. The decor was really nice but music would be a nice touch. <br/>Our table also hadn't been wiped and my glass was a bit muggy. Other than that we all cleaned our plates.

The main dish was good. But I ordered brownie and ice cream for dessert, wrong choice; the brownie was hard as a rock. Every time I cut through it, my cutlery clanged on my plate lol. All in all not bad, provided you choose wisely :)

Sitting at Jaan and accidentally spilt rice on me while cuttin my chicken... Dad complains about explanation of food and how it was completely. Not what. We expected... Diff waitress comes along... <br/>Waitress: What happened here why is there rice on the floor...?!!<br/>Me: Umm I was cutting my chicken and rice flicked on me sorry.... <br/>Dumb waitress: Is that what really happened?? .... Ummm no I decided to sit here and throw rice on myself.. Wtf do you think I was doing?? What rude service!!! <br/>Waitress to my dad: and if you think my staff are rude then I suggest you leave.<br/><br/>Wow Maybe if your dumb waitress knew what she was talking about we wouldn't have brought this up..... <br/><br/>Well happy Father's Day... NOT!!!! Thanks for ruining it Jaan.

Went here a while back with a friend and I couldn't even understand how a place this awful made it to kingsland, the Mecca of good food in Auckland.<br/>The seafood platter was spare, way overpriced and tasteless, with rubbery squid. The mains were like home poked food, in a bad way. It was messily presented, simple and tasteless. <br/>Don't waste your time, when there are so many cheaper, waaay nicer places just metres away

Average food and overpriced. Meat was tastless and turkish is all about the lovely marinated meat. Not a great atmosphere with the takeaway counter at the front door

Went there the other night for a commemorative dinner and drinks. The service was fine, no issues there. The food was also amazing, however some dishes were overpriced for what we got. Upon ordering our drinks, the alcohol portion wasn't detectable, and even after being re-made with apparently 4 shots per drink (which would get me pretty close to drunk on an empty stomach), the coke wasn't nearly watered down enough for 60 ml of a clear liquid to have been added, and we could still not detect anything but the slightest whiff of alcohol. Even those who don't normally drink at all hadn't the slightest feeling of tipsiness and with several years of waiting experience I felt extremely ripped off, it seemed that they had watered down their spirits to the extreme. Desert were delicious, but instead of any compensation/normal pricing for the apparently amped up drinks, we had to pay double because they put in double the amount of alcohol... apparently... have been there before a couple times, but will not be going back any time soon and have anything but food, as what was meant to be a very special evening with Turkish food and rum and cokes to commemorate my partner's uncle with his family ended up being an overpriced disappointment.

We had dinner at Jaan on the 9th Jul 2011, we didn't have a booking but the waitress found us a table despite it being a very busy evening.<br/><br/>We had moussaka and it was fantastic, very tasty and a generous portion. No dessert due to being too full.<br/><br/>Being BYO is great too. The staff were friendly, this was my 2nd time at Jaan and I'll definitely be back for more!
David
Love the atmosphere of this place. The Portions are generous. Be careful eating an entrée as the entrée can be a lot more than the main. A great place to hang out with friends and indulge.

Chose to eat at Jaan after noticing it several times in Kingsland. Never seemed to be particularly busy, but worth a try as we both love Turkish food and the signage promoting wood-fired pizzas lured us in.<br/>Walked in with no booking and were seated with no fuss. We ordered a couple of pizzas and a salad to share, they sounded great on the menu. About 15 minutes later we noticed sparks outside the window and the fire alarm went off. Turns out the pizza ovens had caught fire, so we were ushered out on the cold street to wait for the fire department. Staff coped well and we were let back into the restaurant about 20 minutes later. Unfortunately our pizzas were victims in the fire and due to a looming booked movie we didn't have time to wait for them to be cooked again. The staff were great, our drinks were deemed to be complimentary. We will be back to test out the pizzas, but maybe not on a Friday (apparently this was not the first time the fire brigade have needed to visit, and the first time also fell on a Friday).

Very average food. Ordered pizza and there was hardly any toppings on the bland tasting sauce. Overpriced for what it is.

A group of four of us dined here in January and thoroughly enjoyed our respective meals. Service was attentive and prompt, despite the restaurant being relatively busy. We sat towards the back of the restaurant so had a nice view of the city. Portion sizes were generous and although corkage at $7pp is a little on the pricey side, being byo is certainly a plus. Would definitely dine here again.

Mostly had takeaways but have always had great food and very good service. The food is fresh and baklava is excellent

Terrible experience. One website had only amazing reviews for this place, so I had high expectations. Booking for 8 was confirmed early in the evening, but they clearly weren't able to cater to the bookings they had. We were crammed in at our table, not enough menus, hard work to get any drinks, 40 mins after ordering we were told not all items avaialable - took a further 30 mins to get our food. They had run out of rice(!!) so my kofta shish looked like 2 sausages on a plate with a pathetic side of coleslaw. Very average. The manager did not once come to our table, when one of our group went to him he was arrogant, spent more time talking about himself and said he had to review our total bill before he would agree to comping our corkage ($7/bottle) that we asked for. He generously agreed eventually, but not gracefully. Overall poor and rude service, mediocre food, I will be going to one of the many other amazing Kingsland restaurants next time.

Food was good, service could have been better - they seemed quite disorganised.

We dined at Jaan last night as part of a group of 25. I would not recommend Jaan to anyone. It took an hour to get menus, and even then we had to share 1 between 4. When one of our party went up to the bar and asked for wine glasses and water she was treated with distain. The food was fine, but we got an extra meal that no one ordered and that we sent back, and which later on the restaurant refused to take off our bill. Drinks were added to the bill that no one had ordered, and others were doubled up that had been paid for at the bar. All in all, I walked away with a bad taste in my mouth. Someone should tell Jaan that terrible service and being ripped off are not good for business!

Jaan is definitely the best Turkish in Auckland. The food is fantastic, the service is always warm and inviting. I don't quite understand the previous review comments on service. I've been here at least once a month, and the standard has been consistently high.

We've only ever had food to take away from Jaan, but the quality of the food is very good. It's very tasty Turkish food. The service is always a bit lacking - they can never seem to remember what you've ordered, but it's worth the wait and the confusion once you get what you want.

We dined there last night with a group of eight. We were very pleased with the food, however I have not been this upset by service at a restaurant ever. <br/><br/>The service and attitude of the restaurant staff were rude patoranising especially to the females at the table. We left rather upset.

Jaan Turkish is housed in a converted villa in the main street of Kingsland. The décor is nicely understated. There was a collection of hookahs (smoking pipes) on display, not sure if these are available for patrons. I was surprised walking into Jaan just after midday on Friday to realise our group of 6 were the only people dining. This is large space, with seatings downstairs and also out in the courtyard. <br/><br/>We decided to share a range from the lunch menu (more limited than the dinner menu). Jaan also serves a range of wood-fired pizzas, but we stuck to the first page. Even though we were the only people there, and our orders were taken soon after, the meals took a while to come out. All the dishes came with salad leaves with a citrus dressing and hummus, and some were served with Turkish pida bread.<br/><br/>The meat mezza platter ($17) was a generous serving with crumbed chicken, a grilled chicken nibble, spiced lamb medallion, lamb-filled filo cigars and a selection of dips. The meats were nicely spiced and the grilled chicken was suitably smokey. We sampled two of the shish kebabs, which are meats flame-grilled on an open fire. These are served with green salad, hummus and bread but the promised tabouli and chilli and yoghurt dips were missing. The kofta shish ($15) is spiced minced lamb marinated with onions, red capsicum and pasley. The chicken shish ($15) presented as cubes of marinated chicken. The kofta was the pick, with the aromatics and spices giving plenty of flavour to the mince. I found the muska boregi ($12) filo triangles’ filling of spinach and feta too salty, and the pastry oily. <br/><br/>While I enjoyed the meal at Jaan, the dishes we had were basic, even if they were tasty enough. The dinner menu looked more interesting (tagine, moussaka). <br/><br/>For more photos, see http://easyfoodhacks.blogspot.co.nz/2014/04/jaan-turkish-restaurant-kingsland.html#more

Jaan looks like a little old cottage just stuck there in the middle of Kingsland, but it's no cottage, it's a full on Turkish restaurant with extra yum on the side! I went on a relatively busy evening and service was a little slow and erroneous but I guess due to the nature of it being a hot, busy evening it's not unforgivable!<br/><br/>Whilst the food on offer does not look like what you see in the photographs here, it's still well presented and tastes delicious. Kate W is right, that combination shish is awesome, and yes, the evening I went was for a rugby game too, so it is ideal for pre-rugby food with a good bit more quality than what you'll get at eden park for pretty much the same price!
Kate W
Combination shish is AMAZING! Tastes just like the real thing from Turkey or Greece especially the rice. No idea what gives it that distinct flavour but it's amazing. And they do takeaways...it's just a shame I don't live closer. The wine sleection isn't amazing but for a cheap and very cheerful meal out, this hits the spot. Great for pre-rugby match grub :)
