Review Greenwoods Fresh Catch - Auckland Central

If you’re looking for delicious Fnc look no further! We had order 2 and managed to swap out sausages for a spring roll. It was about $21 for 2x fish, 2x potato fritters, 1x scoop or chips, 1x spring roll and 2x canned drinks. Excellent deal for what we got! All super fresh and crunchy. Fish melted in your mouth. We will be back 😊

Different owners since I've been here. Remember all the awards this place use to get (John Campbell was good m8s with the previous owners 😂). Had the fish burger with grilled gurnard (grilled is extra $). Very nice & so we're the chips. Grilling should not be extra as it doesn't require any batter👇.

Pretty chuffed to be able to call this fine establishment my local. Great service and the food is always hot and fresh. Thanks team! Hamish Dorrington Kakapo Business Sales

Previous owners have moved on. Current owners are lovely. Meal tasted good; I'd return again.

My mom and I had only been in Auckland for a few hours (visiting from the US) and walking outside our Airbnb when we came across this place. Owner was kind in explaining the menu and making recommendations and we both were left very impressed with the quality of food and reasonable price! Will return. The Prawn Twisters were so unique!

Great spot, the fish was delicious. The chips were tasty. The hot dog was yummy and it was all worth the money.

Some of the best fish and chips I have ever had. Glad to have amazing fish and chips in Epsom We had snapper, kumara chips and prawn cutlets - all delicious Reasonable price for quality of food. Quick and easy to order online Best kumara chips I have ever had - not too soft and not too crispy, just right and perfectly seasoned

Best fish and chips we have eaten in a very long time

Very first time buying Fish and Chips from here. Soooooo impressed, fresh fish daily and everything was cooked to perfection and a little touch of extra care, a sprinkle of parsley before bagging. The new owner were very friendly and helpful. I’ll most defiantly be back.

Had an excellent Classic burger which was real tasty for $10-50. Was every bit as good as some of the gourmet Burger joints that charge up to $23 each. Chips were spot on and all nicely packaged. Would highly recommend this place.

Highly recommended! Tonight’s meal of battered snapper and chips was unquestionably the finest we have eaten in a long long time. Well done Lilian and Thomas!

I love this place. The food is delicious and the staff are awesome. The only problem is I have to drive past on a daily basis to work and it is just too tempting.

Fish is really fresh, fried onion good, squid awesome and the fries fried just as Good.

Fantastic fish and chips, so fresh and yummy! And the onion rings and spring rolls were delicious too. Definitely going back, I can see this becoming our favorite spot for fish n chips night

Lovely fresh fish, crispy batter & chips!

Best fish and chips I've had in Auckland yet!

Delicious chips!! Soft, thick and not oily

Went along on advice of others, had the fish and chips and hotdog to try. didnt think much of hot dog, but the fish was very good, and chips were too. not far from my house so will go back again. Service was friendly and good

Our meal of battered snapper and chips was, without question, the finest fish and chip meal we’ve eaten in a long, long time. Thomas knows his craft - the snapper was deliciously moist and the chips far too ‘more-ish’! Highly recommended, Harvey J Brunt!

I love this place, the best fish and chips and service ever! The fish is always fresh, the batter is crispy and the chips cooked to perfection. I cannot recommend this place enough.

Fresh food, good service and great value for money. This is the best local fish and chip shop I've found in ten years of living in Auckland.
I_like_pickles
Really nicely battered and crisply fried fish and chips. The menu is simple but good. It is a little bit on the pricey side for fish and chips. Especially for the chips.
Paul O
Maybe I caught them on a bad day but I found this to be rather underwhelming. The chips were lukewarm and underseasoned. The fish was fine although the batter was rather thick and a bit floury.
Stephy_NakiGirl
Friends who live nearby say this is the best fish & chips they've tried. Although I've had better from Oceanz at Wynyard Qtr, this place is pretty good for a local. The fish is fresh & chips well cooked. You can see why they get so much repeat business. Great place to pick up dinner & head down the road to Cornwall Park with the family to eat it. Quite reasonably priced too.

I only bought chips from here, I wanted fish and scallops but they were a bit too pricey. The chips were pricey as well, but I didn't want to leave the shop empty handed. So I ended up buying $10.00 chips and I gotta say, their chips are mighty damn fine.

Service is pretty ordinary nothing good, nothing bad. Just like any other takeaway shop around. Just that 'hello' and 'what would like to order?'

The place is quite small and crowded with everything around inside. I ended up waiting outside for my order, but didn't really care. It was hot inside anyways, kinda enjoyed the outdoor breeze.

I think it is ok for what you get. I like it but it's not my first place to go to for fish and chips. They serve a good, crispy battered fish; not oily. The chip servings are a little meagre as you order more for larger groups; if you order for one or two people adequate chips given; large groups of five or more, the chips are not equal in portions and often someone misses out or everyone only has very small serving of chips. But the service is good, polite and courteous, and the owners are always smiling and pleasant. The fish is always good.

Oh my god! It's really good, I don't like eat fish but the fish here is really good, but I think everyone should eat it as soon as possible.
Love fish and chips from here. Can order over the phone and pick up. Staff are very friendly. Menu is simple but that makes it easy. It may be a bit pricier than usual, but the quality is worth it.

😜Kia Ora Thomas & Lilian
These lovely people make the most beautiful fish & chips. I recommend them to you because they are Masters @ their Trade! Enjoy! 😃Arohanui Chiko (Master Painter)

The food here while nice is overrated and expensive. The staff are fairly nice and friendly. I just wouldn't be prepared to fork out so much for the food.
Yoda
The chips were ok but the look of the crumbed snapper when we opened the packet was a very unappealing dark, dark brown.
Our fear of it being overlooked was
confirmed. The fish was thin & so dry it went into the bin after the first few bites. Yuk! And to add insult to injury we discovered we were overcharged.
We wont be back.
Diner8Here
heard alot about this place as it is located at a buzy junction and seen on Campbell Live one nite. Their specialty is the way their chips are fried to perfection to be the best and is nice, healthy and chunky indeed, I reckon it taste nicer if wrapped in newspaper like the NZ Herald. Menu is limited to this technique and special fish/chip shop.
Michelle Hwang
Special fish meal with two fish and some chips for $ 9.90 The owners were very friendly and tidy. To be honest, maybe it was not the best fish and chips, but I was really glad to grab a meal from them.

I love Greenwoods Fresh Catch as I find the Fish and Chips ALWAYS to be fresh, hot and "scrummy"!!! The chips in particular are well cooked and not at all oily or greasy. Recently I tried the scallops and they were so juicy - mouth watering!! I will definitely be ordering those again.
The service is exceptional as well. I have recommended to all my friends living through out Auckland to try these Fish and Chips and they have all raved about them. I know of a family who travels quite a way to come to this shop!
I regularly come here to get my Fish and Chips because I know that I get my monies worth.

So very dissappointing. First up quite expensive but we had been told it was very good and worth the price. Then delivery was exceedingly slow (20+mins). Many other customers in and out before our order ready. Then when we got home (5mins away) food cold and barely edible. Would not recommend this establishment to anyone. Batter was rubbery, chips cold, hotdog bland.

Iconic fish and chip place tending to be on a pricier side of things, but absolutely worth trying at least once. I grew up visiting this place many times and apart from atherosclerosis, it has a little place in my heart.

Food: 7/10
Service: 3.5/5
Ambience: 3.5/5
Value: 3/5
Overall: 17/25

Having read the review by Rebecca M I was keen to make this my next friday night chippie. Having suffered a long dose of recurring indigestion these last few weeks I've scaled back my desire to eat out and in fact eat no more than snacks so I was apphrensive about deep fried food.
My fellow foodie's review was spot on. The chippie here in greenwoods corner is very impressive. In fact it's a great standard so far of all the outlets I've wanted to try between newmarket Manukau road to Royal oak in recent months.
Schnapper in batter. We asked if this was beer battered didnt get a clear answer from the young girl (in training) but think it was affirmative. Given the zomato recommendation is beer battered fish maybe its standard as it isnt stated on the menu as an option. Suspect we didn't get beer battered but the fish was good fresh, honest taste and not too oily batter. 5/5
Crumbed terahikhi fish:. Taste wasn't quite there but that's the type fish for you. They only had Crumbed and it seemed to be a little overfried perhaps so a little dry. 3/5
Tempura prawns!! Come in half dozens what a treat these are the best I've had. They come crumbed this time not overfried- must be marinated in something. Large size and crispy. 5/5
Spring rolls. Really large but are the commercially made variety fried really well again. 3/5
Potato fritters. Ordered 5 got 10 little ones. Chippie connoisseurs may not like this as fritters are supposed to be sourced from large potatoes. Slightly undercooked so I got the wrong crunch biting into some.3/5
Chips -you get a decent serving. Pictured is 2 servings. The chips themselves are average standard commercial again not beer battered and better can be found elsewhere in Auckland 3/5.
Hot dog- I didnt eat it but my 15 year old nephew rated it 2.5/5
This chippie is one of the better ones in auckland but i kinda feel the rave newspaper and mag reviews and Campbell show playing by the counter is playing up some average basics. If I said this place was overrated it would be because I had high expectations and those expectations weren't met. I felt the "oil poisoning" I suffer from fish n chips quite early on with their food. I don't take that as a good sign on oil quality. It's 230 am and I'm awake with indigestion as I write this.
Expected a 5/5 dinner for $65 (for 5 people) but got shortchanged cos I don't expect undercooked fritters and over fried crumbed terahikhi from their younger tshirt dressed chef. I don't imagine I'll see my zom review posted on their shop wall either.

This is another of my favourite fish and chip places. They have won awards for the best chips and I have to agree they are good. I got my usual, battered snapper and one serve of chips, both which were very generous servings, in fact I couldn't actually finish it all there was so much.

Couldn't fault this fish and chip shop it was the bomb diggidy. I'm allergic to fish so got a hot dog and spring roll. I LOVE when a hot dog actually has a proper sausage and not one of those shitty red frankfurters. The chips were the best I've had in ages. Not too fatty and perfectly crunchy. My partner had a bone in his fish but meh at least he can eat fish!! It looked delicious and I was pretty jel I couldn't try it. Customer service was brilliant and the shop is very bright, colourful and vibrant. Best fush & chups near Epsom!

Crunchy fish and chips. Quite nice. Must try the fish. The tempura is nice too.very small take away place. Only open 3 hours a day. The boss is nice and friendly too.

We tried this place for the first time last night and it was easily the best fish and chips I have tasted. The snapper I had was a generous size and sooooo fresh with a perfect cooked batter. the chips were extremely generous fresh tasting and beautifully cooked.

What also impressed me was the immaculate presentation of the food and the premises. We live 50 km away but would definitely drop in for another sample next time up in this area. Other fish and chip shops need to experience the superb good quality food being served here....

Well done guys.

There is a relatively substantial amount of local hype encompassing Greenwoods Fresh Catch, and I am happy to say that it was favourably verified in my opinion. The fish and chips were adequately prepared and tasted great. Even the head cook was dressed appropriately for the occasion. It was relatively costly, but that will be understandable if the location of the business is considered. In addition, the portion sizes were quite proportional anyway.

1st time being here today but have heard of the place ages ago. The old Chinese chef is quite famous as this place is award winning fish n chip shop. Order meal of the day which has 2 fish and 1 chip In it. Cost $9.9. Fish was well prepared and fied not too oily just the way it should be. Chips are nice and crispy. Enjoyed it. Will definitely come back.

Fish and chips are often overrated.. Greasy, heavy batter etc so while we heard this place was meant to be amazing, we were cautious. Very glad to report that the meal was excellent.

Fish was very generous and cooked perfectly. We got the crumbed terakihi, and it was crispy and golden. And definitely not greasy. Chips were nice and crisp on the outside, soft in the middle.

It's not the cheapest place out there ($25.50 for 3 fish and 2 scoops of chips) but worth it.
Daniel
Greenwoods Fresh Catch is almost certainly uncontested as the best fish and chips in Auckland, wether you want food that is fresh and healthy or tasty and comforting you will find that both are possible here.

On top of this it is both affordable and often comes with more than you order. You won't dare to try another fish and chip shop again.

The Ancient Mariner ran out of fish at 8pm so I decided to try out the 2013 Best Chip Shop regional winner. The service was good & the box smelt amazing, we had ordered two pieces of Tarakihi & a hotdog. The fish was deep-fried to perfection though we found 6 bones in both pieces of fish (one I can understand, but not both) - I very rarely get bones when we catch our own fish so this spoiled my experience - hence the low rating. The hot dog was really average. I'll be sticking to the Ancient Mariner though if you get fish without bones from this place you'll likely enjoy your meal.

That's a fabulous treat. Love visiting again and again. Such a spicy potato with super delicious fish. Can't express in words. Simply yummy. I liked so much.

I can see why this place has won awards, the fish and chips are fantasic. Not too greasy and cooked perfectly. I dont live in the area anymore but drive out of my way to go here

Great Fish & Chip Shop, they use light oil which is not too heavy. Recommended!

I rang a phone order through at 5:45, just 2 fish, a hot dog and a scoop of chips and was told it would be ready in 15 mins. I went in at 6:05 and said my name and the young guy on the till laughed at me and said "It will be at least another 10 or 15 mins because we had lots of people walk in." I then waited in my car for another 15 mins and he rang me and asked if I still wanted my order. I said yes and then waited a further 10 mins and went back in. He then said it would be another 3 or 4 minutes and they don't accept credit cards so I walked out and went elsewhere. Awful service and I've eaten there before and its expensive and not that good.

I absolutely love this little takeaway joint! From the quality of their food, the effort they put into their packaging and the friendly owners. You cannot go wrong with their fish & chips! It delivers what it promises for sure. My favourite would have to be the snapper! You have not tried good fish & chips until you have tried this one, even if you may have to travel a bit for it.
The only thing I'd say is that it's a bit pricy compared to a few other fish & chip shops, but it is absolutely worth it for the quality of their food. Woof!

The owner chef here has been in the fishnchips arena for 25+years and really has perfected the art. The fish is always super fresh and cooked to order so is juicy and tender. And the crumb crust we usually order is light and crisp The chips are excellent - cooked frozen so as not to absorb too much oil ( they use canola) they're crisp and light. Food is served in cardboard trays as chef says newspaper makes the food go soggy , though that also depends on how long after packaging the food gets eaten as a couple of times it was a little limp. Haven't tried the burgers yet but watching their preparation they look good too. Prices are are a little higher than runofthemill places, but I think it's worth it

Ordered from Greenwoods Fresh Catch again this evening (this is our third order from there as it's quite close by). We ordered the squid rings, kumara chips, potato chips and snapper. Pricing is a bit higher than I would expect for good ol' fush n chups but not at Mt Eden Fish Shop standards. The serving sizes were good, plenty of foos for two very hungry adults and a greedy toddler. The squid rings were delightfully tender, the chips were crispy and fluffy (and not oily at all) and the snapper was fresh with just the right amount of batter. They were spot on with getting our order ready (just a touch under the 10 mins quoted). Obviously a lot of thought in the packaging, as it stops the chips going soggy on the trip home. Definitely recommend!

Pro's - Crispy, tasty deep fried fare, without an abundance of grease and friendly operators.
Con's - Slightly higher up the "food chain" in terms of pricing but I suppose you get what you pay for.
