Review Tomi Ro - Auckland Central

Trevor Meder-Crowe
My favourite go to sushi place. It’s local and it’s got some of the best food. Nothing too fancy or overpriced as well. The sashimi is the bomb, so is the sushi rolls and smoked fish. Service is usually good except one time the girl waiting tables didn’t even bring me my drink I ordered. But aside from that it is always a pleasant and tasty dining experience.

we were seated right away at a tall table next to the sushi train. we ordered only from the menu. we got the seafood udon which came with mussels and shrimp. it was delicious. we also got a few appetizers and two rolls. i believe it was the special rolls - one was rainbow and the other was avocado. the avocado one was our fave!!! i also asked for hot water (the restaurant was quite cold imo!) and it came in a teapot which was so cute! we also got the mango mochi dessert which was frozen. you get 3 small ones which ended up being perfect since there were 3 in our party. kind servers and great food overall!

Loved the quality of the food, atmosphere and overall it was an awesome experience! Scampi is one of our absolute favourite. We’ve visited at least 10 times already lol 😃 so fresh, so good.

Had not been to a Sushi Train before. Have to wonder if this style of food delivery would work for other styles of food. Was excellent Sushi, also a good cheesecake. Interesting and somewhat entertaining approach.

Quite a unique place. Never been to a lot of places like this. Can be crowded and prices are a bit up there. But it's very pleasant and delicious 😋

Always yum sushi train here. Tried the seafood skewers last time I went and wasn't overly impressed. Will stick to the train from now on. Family favourite here, good music & cool vibe

Found this cute sushi spot to try whilst visiting Auckland. Sushi train had heaps of sushi dishes to choose from as well as a variety if menu items. The awesome variety catered to all. Delicious fresh tasting salmon sushi 🤤😍 Little expensive, I ended up spending roughly $43 and this covered 7 different dishes i tried. Friends spent roughly $30 to $40 too. Would definitely recommend, delicious!

Best Sushi in Auckland !! I personally high recommend this Sushi train place !! so many choices of the sushi menu and if you can’t eat raw fish or vegan they have a heaps of another way to enjoy your Sushi. me always visit here every month ☺️

Brought my youngest (6yo) here for a date day. He loves sushi, so the discovery of the sushi train was a huge highlight for him. Delicious fresh food. The selection on the conveyor belt is amazing. We even had delicious cake, which we would have taken a photo of, but we ate it too quick😁 Great place for a special outing.

1/ Always a lot fun, watching the dishes going past and choosing whatever takes your fancy, highly recommended. 2/ Another visit to this popular eatery, doesn’t disappoint.

Enjoyed the experience but not for the price. Good sushi and sashimi but a bit spenny. I didn't mind paying but you can better value elsewhere. If you just want good sushi and plum wine, this place is for you.

Great atmosphere. The service was great. There was not too many choices for sushi on the train. It was a Tuesday night.
James Appleby
Excellent and quick service and very high quality food. Sushimi was great and the food on the train is fresh and tasty.

Really really good and modern sushi joint. There’s something for everyone. The staff is insanely friendly and helpful. Everything was good. Nothing a disappointment which I usually find in sushi places. Everything tasted so fresh. We will definitely be back.

Had a casual and relaxed dinner with friends. Nice, warm and welcoming ambience. The sushi was fresh and tasty. My favorite dish was the fried chicken. The miso soup could have been warmer but was tasty.

Staff are super friendly and lovely food. Been here quite a few times now. Definitely will recommend for sushi lovers

Been there 3 times in as many weeks...can't get enough of the place. Fresh food and the seafood especially the tuna is AMAZING
Linda Fletcher-Trautvetter
Thoroughly enjoyed. .service and food selection great for a Sushi Train eatery, will be back

Had lunch today and such amazing friendly staff, great atmosphere! Sushi was so fresh and so many to choose from.

Absolutely painful opening hours. First, they close at 9 on Friday nights - and the place was full when we went there. There had been an open air theatre event on and the area was absolutely pumping yet they closed anyway. Then, they close from 3-5pm each day. Ran into this the 2nd time we tried to go there. This is despite all the other restaurants in the area staying open right through from lunch to dinner time. Not good for a brand new eatery to make it so hard to do business with them. We certainly won't bother from now on...very disappointed.

Service was good and food was great, il be heading back there.

Second visit and a bit of a disappointment. We arrived just after 7pm on Saturday to see they had nothing on the actual sushi train. There would’ve been about 9 or 10 tables full including us however to eat anything we had to order off the menu. The sushi was very high quality but there was no atmosphere or experience. I enjoy the novelty of the food moving along the train, and without it, had the vibe of a sushi shop at lunchtime.
Sushi is definitely at there top end price wise with most things around the $4.50 range per dish.
On a move positive note, the tuna sashimi was the best I’ve had and Staff were lovely and very friendly.
Bring back the train and we’ll be back
Kurt Williams
The selection of food was excellent I particularly enjoyed not feeling like I had to rush to order as it was always casually passing next to me
Karina
Came here for dinner with a friend and the staff was super lovely and theres lots of places to sit and there is a huge variety of sushi to choose from. The sushi was all so good and fresh, definitely one of my favourite sushi places. However the staff were quite difficult when it came to splitting the bill where we ended up waiting for so long we just told them to forget it cause they were making it so hard. The price value is good as-well as we didn't pay that much for the amount of sushi we got. Would definitely recommend and will be back soon :))

Had lunch here today
Not bad!!!
Staff was friendly & helpful
Food was ok !!
Best to order the karage chicken from the waiter so it comes out hot!
First sushi train experience 7/10
Thanks
Natalie Muir
Delicious sashimi, the fish is always so fresh. Often have to order off the menu, but once you know that’s how it works it’s fine. Have been here many times. Came weekly for at least 6 months. It’s my first choice for sushi and sashimi.
Vina Tipene
Nice ambiance. Very cheap and yummy one. nice for any casual occasion and nice place to grab you some nice lunch. recommend the chicken and mini prawn sushi❤️
Zara
One of my favourite places. I come here very often and Always great service and very friendly staff. I love the food here and is very cheap but high quality great mood and great for families. Always very clean and tidy and they always clean up right after someone’s left which is great. Would definitely recommend to anyone!!
Josie
Cool idea but also makes it really really hard to keep your total spend down. The train is very pricey but the sushi was great so you just have to decide on if its worth it.

I went there on a weekday around 1pm. Only a few customers eating so we could take one of the big box seat all to ourselves for 3 people.
I was with a person in a wheel chair so we avoided counter seats with high chairs.

There were a couple of inconvenient things before putting sushi in the mouth.

1. We have to stand up and a take a few steps crossing the aisle to reach to the counter where sushi is going around.
I wonder how we can handle if the counter seats were all full with other customers?

2. Most of sushi going around are basic and simple ones. For any sushi which is interesting on the menu, I should wave to the staff to order every time. It was not a busy time so we were lucky that the staff were attentive enogh to pick up our sign.

Anyway we all enjoyed the sushi here.

This is my first time coming to this place and it won’t be the last. Such nice staff came and checked up on us but not to the point where it is annoying. The food was great better then your average sushi! And for the value it was outstanding!! I live in central auckland and I will drive out of my way to come here again! The fish was very fresh and portion sizes are good. I spent roughly $20 and I was definitely full!
Thank you for the wonderful experience tomi ro
Natyo
Lovely place for lunch - clean and friendly staff. The food is fresh and fairly priced. There is not always a big variety on the conveyor belt so dont be shy to order off the menu. My go to is always the mixed sashimi (one of the few places that use fresh wasabi omg it's amazing!), the fried chicken and the various nigiri.
Jade Lin
Pretty average food not bad .. comparing to other sushi place that does a conveyer belt style .. they are lacking much in terms of what’s available on the menu .. tho the place was clean and kids friendly
Jennifer
Lovely Japanese food with good portions so you can try little bits of everything. Prices are reasonable and the staff are friendly. My go to for lunch
Btkisakisa
All tables occupied, nothing except ginger, wasabi and cookies left on the sushi train. Had to order, and waited very long time. Even no cups left. Food ok. Lack of chef. Unhappy experience.
OL
Been told that all takeaway sushi are of menu price, which I’m okay with it (dine in price $3 special/ plate) but waited for more than half an hour for 6 takeaway sushi dishes (3 raw fish dishes). Not been informed about wait time prior to order. No apology whatsoever!!

I think you need to have a better customer service skills. Poor standard! Will not go back again.
Hungry*Panda
Tomi To is our go to place when we need a healthy light meal after a long day at work. The conveyor belts add a bit of fun to our meal. What I love the most about this place is that their sashimi is always fresh! And you can order a small portion at an affordable price.
Kelly Smith
Been here a few times since it’s opened and I love it! The staff are always very friendly. I do wish they would have some more options along the train but overall I have always had an amazing experience here.

This place was great when it first opened but slowly when downhill. Train always very empty with hardly any sushi on it. Ended up just ordering from their menu but after 20mins waiting nothing got served and if you complain to them they don’t really seem to care. Seems like they don’t really want my business so I won’t be going back there.

Went here with my friend last night for dinner, it's a large restaurant with two conveyor belts for those busier nights.

It was a bit confusing when we first arrived as no one sat us down or explained what was going on or how it worked. After 15mins a waitress came over and took our order and told us to pull off what we wanted.

The food was really fresh and delicious. Loved how you could order things and get stuff off the conveyor belt. I would highly recommend covering all the food though as it is a bit of a good safety concern.

Would definitely come back as a treat as it was yummy and cost effective as well.

I love this place and we go alot, some things they could improve on and its covering all plates and putting more varieties out and prehaps something new every now and then...otherwise our family really enjoy it 😁
Felicity Williams
Super fresh and delicious. Our new found love for sushi train at tomi ro northwest. Excellent friendly service. Can be a little dangerous eating here when your starving cause you seem to just grab everything in site. It can accumulate up quite fast if you don't watch or count how many plates you eat.2 of us cost about 60$. Definitely be back.

Been going since it opened and quality has dropped so badly I had to review this time. No sushi on the train and had to order off a menu. Food did not arrive after 20 mins and wait staff did not provide any effort to assist. Asked to speak to the manager and he refused to acknowledge us (we can literally see you, you wore a blue hat AND your wait staff pointed you out!) Long story short, incompetent management, inexperienced (but nice) wait staff and a lack of actual sushi on the train makes for a bad experience. Place is dying a slow death, skip this one and try the restaurants on the main drag.

Awful place for a meal. Most of the food was uncovered, kids were coughing near the said uncovered food and they got the price of the meal wrong twice in a row. That's not even mentioning how fake and tacky the place feels. Even the food tasted fake. Stay away if possible and try someplace else if you want good Japanese food.
Xtneqt
Not much variety on the train. Have to order if you want something specific and that order takes too long to come.
The kids love it for the experience though.
And yes, also agreed that food must be covered.
Warren
I think other negative reviews are unfair. Nearly put me off coming but glad I went. It's near new, clean, lots of seating. Food was fresh and good! True that some plates weren't covered but the food was fresh and they have an A food rating. Kids play pen is a bonus. Will be going back
The Sweet Tooth Fairy
A good place to go for the converyor belt sushi experience if you don't want to go to the CBD for it.

Unfortunately, it's not a place I would return to. As mentioned in other reviews, not only is there not much variety, some of their sushi plates are indeed NOT covered. After about minutes of dining, it was then I saw one of the staff members starting to cover up the remaining plates that were uncovered, but who knows how long those plates have been exposed.

Yum. I love sushi trains and this one is pretty good. Sushi is fresh and tasty. I've been twice for lunch and both times didn't disappoint. Sometimes it can feel like the same things are going past as the popular items get snapped up quick but you can also order off the menu if you want something specific.
Santana Hunt
Love it here, have been many times with friends and it is definitely a favourite of ours. Great that they have added the children's play area
K.jadeyoung
You wonder why this place is always half empty, you soon find out once you enter.

The service is great but the selection on the conveyor belt is poor and the teriyaki chicken sushi is extremely dry. My brother ordered the popcorn chicken and unless you like a heart attack in a bowl you should give it a miss!
Gina Harris
Great fresh sushi and sushimi
Good selection of chicken, noodles and other dishes
Great for the kids
Good service and friendly staff
Very reasonably priced meal
Wendy Brown
Lovely place, come here all the time and we are never disappointed. The food is now being covered for hygiene and chefs are super quick at bringing out meals we order. Came with friends once and a meal took 20 minutes to come out, but we understand that mistakes are made sometimes, and this is the only time we have ever been slightly disappointed. Plenty of new staff and fresh faces recently but a couple of the younger girls have provided us with excellent, enthusiastic service. Would recommend to families or anyone looking for quick, casual dining.

When they first opened, the place was quite exciting and the conveyor belt was full on with so many different fresh options. However lately, the belt has been looking very boring and you are expected to order from the menu instead which kind of ruins the whole sushi train experience and idea. They have added a kids play area though so def kids friendly. If you're looking for a place where kids will enjoy then I definitely recommend this place as there is so many different options in the menu for kids. However if you're looking for a sushi train experience or a dinner date then this place is a bit too casual for that.

Went in for a birthday meal. Food was okay but a little overpriced. Atmosphere was boring and I not sure whether the staff are friendly or not as we only spoke to two staff - First was to inquire about something on the menu and we couldn't understand the young man and the second was when we paid and we also couldn't understand her either. Luckily we were paying via eftpos. Sorry I wouldn't recommend this place. Sushi Train in Auckland Central is definitely better by far.

Delicious, fresh sushi! So many options to choose from and very well priced. Great service from the staff too! My partner and I visited for the first time on a Saturday morning at about 11:30. We were greeted and taken to our seats. The waitress asked if we had been there before and when we told her no she proceeded to explain how it all worked. It was so much fun!! By being able to pick what you want one plate at a time, you can eat until you're full. It also makes trying new things easier aswell. Can't wait to go again!
Jenny FVG
Really good food..loved ordering off the menu for fried scallops and skewered asparagus..saw the comment about sushi train food not being covered but remember food is not covered in many self serve /food court/ restaurants/smorgasbords anyway and here its the waitresses job to cover dishes which they did after a short time.Great for kids to watch and keep occupied. Will be coming back for the sushi and the menu items. Also can be as cheap or expensive here as you like

It was the only sushi-go-around place I knew in New Zealand so I thought I might give it a try. There wasn't many people when me and my partner got there so we got a seat with the conveyor belt sushi train going around right in front of us. I was really surprised to find out that none of the sushi running on there were covered. They were so close to the table we felt that anyone could easily spread their saliva if they are chatting excitedly. It really ''amazed'' me that the owner hasn't think about this because other similar restaurant I been in other countries are be sure to have those running sushi covered for hygiene purpose. If they are imitating from other people they should learn the basic too.

They don't have any speciality that attracts me to go back again. You can get the same sushi (probably even better ones)from somewhere else with better price.

Littleapplepie
Well, I think the fact that the price is GST excluded is really unexpected !! !The sushis are over priced for some reason. The service and atmosphere is ok.
Dale
Went on a Tuesday so was quiet. All options were delicious it due to lack of customers not a huge range and some sushi looked a bit sad.. service was lovely though and reasonably priced. Will head back on a busy night for the full experience

Worst sushi train experience ever. Sushi not great, missing lids, staff horrible. They have asked us if we finished at least 5 times in 10 minutes. They started counting our plates while we were still eating. We will never be back
Rachel Shen
Food was remarkable, really nice sushi and grill steak. Excellent environment for groups of friends to come or either someone who likes to have a dinner alone. Staff were all so friendly. Btw the chief was soooo nice to offer me a fresh oyster, tastes so amazing that it's one of the best oyster I have ever taste.
Coffeeomg
Excellent atmosphere, family friendly, clean, tasty, creative dishes, fun experience, good service all together. You HAVE to come and experience for yourself at least once. It's going to satisfy everyone in the family. Personally, I do feel the dishes are more expensive than conventional sushi shops, and you do need to mind calculating the cost if you have a budget to keep. Otherwise, if what you are buying is the experience, then go for it!

New opening in Oct, fresh and modern fitout..Good family fun with plates of sushi on conveyor belts that goes around.(like the airport luggage claiming one). Friendly staff but inexperience shown in both waiting and kitchen staff, almost disorganised at times when lots customers came in at once, different waiting staff were telling the same customer to sit at different places.....Limited choice on sushi variety and un-hygienic as plates of sushi were NOT covered with clear, see-through type of lids...so collection of unwanted germs when plates of food goes around on the belt. Waitress gave me a lazy answer by saying "no lids on food as steam can build up" Ok...but since when the cold sushi can create steam and same plates of food has been on the belt for more than 10mins!!! We were there for more than an hour, still most plates of food had no lids on them before and after...Also kitchen couldn't keep up when restaurant was nearl full capacity....near- empty belt.(Saturday Lunch hour).
