Review Urban Jungle Cafe - Auckland Central

AAYAC AKL
The food and coffee are excellent. The flavor and the potion of the food we ordered are very good. Suggestions for improvements are below: 1. The seats are uncomfortable, need to be upgraded. 2. The windows of the café are not clean, as well as the glass cup. Need more works. 3. The two staff were talking loudly in another language rather than English. Very ignoring customers. When the staff taking the order, he didn't listen to the customer patiently, rushed to order for the customer. I know he may just be kind but really not a professional service way. Definitely lots of room could be improved in front service. Anyway overall food and coffee and fine. Happy to back to see any improvements there.

Loved this nostalgic venue. I remember this place from the OG owners and where it is now. Still a cool place to meet, gather and enjoy great food, good conversation and an awesome area 😀 🥰 Grey Lynn Babyyy!!! Try their Smoothies & Fries #Epic!!!

Just had a fantastic experience as a dad with his 3 kids (8, 6 and 4). Table service right away with colouring sheets as we sat down. Water to follow. We had 3 kids pancakes and a big delicious burger. Had to get a second flat white as it was delicious. And the barista gave my kids a lesson on how coffee is made, followed by a hot chocolate to take away (for free!)! Blown away by the customer service and appreciation. This is a good one. Will be back.

Big breakfast was yummy. I got the "small" big breakfast and son got the "large". Could have had some butter for the toast, otherwise very good. Coffee was on as well.

A cozy cafe in grey lynn, perfect spot if you have fur friend with you, my go to cafe for weekend brunch! They serve delicious food with good portion. Totally recommended! psa. the silkiest scrambled egg in auckland imo 🔥

My family have been in Grey Lynn for over 30 years and Urban Jungle Cafe is an institution! In particular I LOVE the salmon eggs benedict! Massive portion can be shared by two, generous salmon, benedict sauce and baby spinach! Call me basic but I also love the triangle hashbrowns you can add on the side! Parking is available on surrounding streets, wheelchair accessible and kid friendly! 100% recommend you give Urban Jungle Cafe a go and be prepared to have a new favorite 😍

Best (SSS) Salmon, Spinach and Scrambled Eggs in town. Generous portions. Chef does a perfect job and staff always friendly and helpful. A+++

Urban jungle was a great little find. Prices are a little high compared to others. But it really makes up for it in quality and size of the dish. Service is fantastic
Frederick McFall
Great dining experience today. Had eggs benedict and mum had pancakes. Huge portions. We struggled trying to finish them. Very tasty.
Angel Fire3821
Really good food and very relaxing. Would recommend to friends and family. Very good portion for the price paid

Friendly, fast service right from the start. Serving sizes were generous so we ordered the small Urban Jungle breakfast and left feeling full and satisfied. Great coffees and smoothies too.

The best place to grab brunch in Grey Lynn. Good customer service and really good atmosphere. Should try this place! Food portion is good for the Price And Good Coffee :D There is a Parking space on the backside

Excellent food. Tables were a little tight to sit down. Things were great 👍
Ian Jury
Great food, good sized portions and quick and friendly service.

Staff were super friendly. Surprised by the pancake as I'd never seen it made like this before but it was nice, thick and filling. More syrup needed though. Big breakfast was huge and good value. They had run out of wedges and were very genuine about the mistake and kept apologising which was very humble of them. Food was average but the excellent customer service made the food even better. Highly recommended.

Been going to urban jungle since I was a child so when I brought my partner along with me for the first time he was disappointed to find hair in his food (steak meal) and I found something that was either a bug or a hair ball in my big breakfast. It was really gross and sadly I don’t think I’ll be coming back :-(
MCP
Found a new fave spot! they serve a really good coffee and food! come in generous portion as well! def will be back

I love this cafe! Good food, great service and friendly staff. Has been my go to place for breakfast. Portion size is also big. Their omelette and coffee is just soo good!

This is one of my favourite cafes to eat at! It always has a lovely laid back vibe and the food is so delicious and cheap! A real bang for your buck. The portion sizes are huge ! Definitely can satisfy a big appetite! Only thing I’ll recommend on changing is maybe using fresh salmon for the eggs benny rather than tin salmon. Other than that everything else was perfect.

I love the coffee at Urban Jungle and the food is always the BEST in Auckland for a cafe. Try Triple S. if you love eggs and salmon or the big breakfast as both portion sizes leave you struggling to finish. Large is enough for sharing...They are very generous here and coffee is very large too. (Double the size of other cafes) You feel like a old friend of the staff as they are always welcoming, friendly and happy. It’s very clean and trendy and inviting too.
So happy to have a cafe like this in Grey Lynn😘

I came in here today with my mum and sister and I ordered a big breakfast. Usually when I go to other cafe/breakfast places their big breakfast isn’t even that big, but I can tell you right now the Big Breakfast at Urban jungle is actually BIG. I struggled to eat the whole thing (I managed to eat it all anyways) lol. My food was delicious, I loved it. My mum had eggs Benedict and couldn’t finish it but she loved how it was made, to her it was perfect. My sister ate a BLT burger and couldn’t finish it either. I was trying to prove my mum that I could eat all my breakfast (even though I struggled) lol. My first time here today and I had a great first experience, the staff was super kind and welcoming. Keep up the good work!!

I can only comment on the coffee, it’s great. I’m vegan so there are no options for me to eat here. That’s why I’m only giving 4 stars. But coffee is really good and there’s a lovely outdoor area.

Very lovely place. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by a sweet lady. Nothing was too much trouble for her. We ordered a bagel with scrambled eggs, avocado and tomato with a side of hash browns. To drink I had a soy mocha and my mother, a latte. Both were perfectly blended!
Always enjoyed coming to Urban Jungle. Foods are tasty and of generous sizes. It was disappointing that my favorite Chicken Astrio is no longer available and is out off the menu. However it got me to try out something new. Their open steak sandwich was of the same high standard

Fave Cafe hands down!

Used to go Coffee Club as my go to cafe but once I tried this place I’ve never been back to a coffee club. Fave is Bacon Eggs Bene which is bomb (hollandaise definitely makes the dish, bagel just a little hard tho) with fries on the side. First time trying this place earlier this year and I’ve been about 10 times already lol. Always recommend this place to friends, they also do a bomb big breakfast for only $21 and you won’t be disappointed.
I had skipped lunch in expectation of devouring a tasty filling dinner. In the end I was defeated unable to finish my plate.
The Hot bbq Pork Ribs and Homemade Hamburger were ordered off the dinner menu.
The ample serving of ribs were succulent and tasty but not so hot. I mentioned this to the boss and was given an apology not to leave standing so long before serving everything .
The burger pattie was large ,deliciously juicy , tasty...and hot. Along with the accompanying fries and salad, these meals were good.
Service was prompt and with a smile in a relaxing setting.

Triple S and chicken pasta are my favorite. Coffee arts are beautiful.
Nice staff kindly reminded us that even the small serving might be enough for us.
My number place for coffee in Auckland! The coffee is hot, excellent and consistent. You can sit down with a good coffee, take a deep breathe in and relax. There is an excellent variety of food, and the service is friendly and personable.
Gloria Liu
Very big amount of food. Me and my boyfriend were really full and satisfied. I love their soy latte which can be ranking the top three best soy latte I ever tried. Will definitely go back again!
Lyu215
Good enviroment, kind staff. Like the coffee art sooo much. Its clean n tidy inside. Really enjoy this visit. Next time I would like to try the steak which is referred by the cool manager.
Keithsonhuang
Really good place, nice food and friendly customer service, 3×s is the best combo I suggest, tasty and fullfilling. You must try the soylatte, it's wonderful also!
Nicole Cao
Great lunch, reasonable price and warm service~It’s the best cafe in Grey Lynn, I really enjoyed my relaxing day here! I would like to try their diner next time~

Nice place, Excellent ambiance. Soft trance music

Coffee a awesome mid blend

Good for family come to share food,

Friendly service and big big smile face all the time.

Coffee is good but nachos were dull an seemed like mince and cheese $17 ,way to expensive. Needed salsa and guacamole . Left most of it , not nice.
Ind Frem
Fine service/ambience - it's nice to sit outside. Have been here twice - ordered the omelette twice which was nice but have slightly gotten my order wrong (asked for no cheese). Little pricey imo but fine food.

What amazing service...friendly and sincere.
Having not much time for a leisurely lunch i had the chicken and mushroom instead of the steak sammy i was craving for.
Parmesan is not a fav and it was readily substituted.
Was delicious and plentiful..
My husband had the smoked salmon bagel...and it was filled with Salmon...and nicely toasted.
we look forward to another visit

Only been open a short while for dinner and five of us were each utterly delighted with our choices. Each dish was perfectly cooked and delicious. Friendly, professional service. Very highly recommended especially as our local. It is 'up there' with Ponsonby Road and Jervois Road for quality of food. and easy parking!!!!

Just found out they now open for dinner on Thursday to Saturday nights. I went there with a group of four. Lovely service from the owner and wait staffs, very knowledgeable about their wine list ( great selection and price for wine by glasses). Food were wonderful, a lot of dishes had a really nice Asian favour twist. The beef salad is to die for and pasta is really interesting in favour (in a good way). Desserts were good too, especially the affogato, it was served with a proper coffee liqueur cocktail, yum! We will definitely come back again!

The best toasted sammies, great coffee and incredible service! The guys here are so friendly, and always go the extra mile! Our regular stop on the way to work!
Mason James Thorburn
Good food, large servings, no white bricks and pretence. Perfect for people actually looking for a good breakfast rather than an Instagram post.

I've been coming here for years and it's definitely worth a visit. The last time we visited here, it was with my niece Reese for her 13th Birthday Brunch. The service was friendly and food was fine. There were several concerns though; an upside down fly on our table about to die was a somewhat off putting experience. The other issue was they forgot my niece's second order, but Reese didn't seem too fussed. They genuinely apologised for the missed order, and were busy at the time. The 3.5/5 is my overall rating, as we've never experienced any concerns or issues there prior. Next time we'll sit outside. :)

Urban Jungle was the first cafe I came to when I moved to Auckland 15 years ago and I still come here because of Chef Nia's amazing food and my favourite "French Toast" (I ask for no banana but reccomend you get it) as she puts a subtle yet secret ingredient in the egg mix which balances the sweetness of the maple syrup, add bacon and it's heaven!

Great parking free for ano hour surrounds the place which also has a sun filled deck when the sun's out.

I love the place, try it I'm sure you will too.
Nathaniel Leki Lui
Went for breakfast and everything was good the food all cooked properly , hot drinks came in fancy cups , definitely somewhere id go again. The service was good just the outdoor seating was abit crowded and too small.

My wife and I came back to have our lunch today .
The selection is quite wide ranging .
I ordered a prawn fettuccine and my wife chose a Mediterranean breakfast .
The portions were sizeable .
Our meals were tastefully done and we enjoyed thoroughly .
Besides the owner / operator is friendly and he knows what is customer service .
His staff look well trained too .
We look forward to our next lunch there again .
Short drive to Grey Lynn for other things and in need of brunch. Found Urban Jungle. She had the whole grain toast and i had the porridge worth almond and blueberrys (frozen). This was accompanied by a bowl of flat white (nice) and a English breakfast tea (hard to muck that up-but no Chai tea sadly....).

Good portion size and presentation. Looking around the other diners were tucking into big meals.

Has a great look and feel, good service and seems like a local favorite.

The toast was nice. I wouldn't bother with the porridge again but I'd have a go at something else on the menu.

Certainly worth a look.

A loved local in the heart of GLC. Iv heard a lot of good things about this place so I was excited to try it out.

My brother and I got the bacon eggs Benedict and his partner had the steak and eggs with salad and chips.

The eggs Benedict was good, average but good. I don't like to much hollandaise sauce on top cause i feel it over powers the whole dish like when you eat to much aioli you start to feel sick... Less is more.

However the eggs were cooked perfectly and were oozing out with yellow oak, service was great and I loved the outdoor seating.

Quantity. An unexpected occurance in the 'urban jungle'. No carefully coiffed gastronomy but rather bulk delivery of constituent proteins and carbohydrates. Perfect for a shady sunday. Alas I went on Saturday.

Local cafe in the heart of Grey Lynn.

Been going there for many years and can never get sick of the Urban Big Breakfast with hollandaise sauce on the side and a Hot Chocolate. Only downside to the breakfast is that it's too big for a normal person to finish.. but that's alright.

Staff are very welcoming and helpful with everything that they do. Prices are a bit high but you forget about them when the food gets to you.

Always good to go to when you can't decide on what to have for breakfast. One of the great local cafes that never seems to disappoint.
Mike
Great cafe in the suburb, even though slightly hidden from the main view, it has got great customer service and amazing food. The portions you get for that price are just huge(please don't change it!). Highly recommend to go there if you are around and in between decisions
Food 24/7
Lovely Saturday lunch . One of my favourite cafes. Food is always flavoursome and very satisfying . Good portion always leaving the place full and ready to food coma .
Sadly, this place has gone downhill!
At first I was overcharged. The two guys behind the counter struggled to work out 25% off (Entertainment voucher) my total bill and kept coming up with an amount more than the full price. I ordered eggs benedict with salmon and was served un-toasted bagel with tinned salmon and eggs which arrived in less than 5 minutes (explains the undercooked bagel). I went to the counter to ask why they had stopped serving the fresh salmon and replaced it with tinned - the guy had little explanation and after admitting it was tinned went on to tell me it was smoked in-house.

The food was so terrible I took it back to the counter and walked out. Severely disappointed. I wouldn't usually bother with a review but with the sub-standard service combined with unimpressive food I feel this warrants my time to warn others to avoid disappointment. Try Occam Cafe instead - a few shops down!

Good food and generous portions. However, way over priced on the lunch/dinner side of their menu. $20 for chicken penne pasta. Recommend keeping their menu under $16 to be competitive with other cafes. Good coffee and smoothies.

Have always known that this cafe was there but haven't been there in years so i was pleasantly surprised! I ordered a mocha and the mushrooms on ciabatta! Omg to die for, so creamy and the portion size is definitely value for money! I also ordered it with scrambled eggs and herb potatoes! Delish! The only criticism I have is that its a bit of creamy overload and needs something to cut through it but other than that definitely will be going back 😀

Great atmosphere. Came for Sunday brunch. I ordered the mince on toast, which came with 2 poached eggs. Great flavor with a generous portion. Anytime you can get a meal like this for under $20 is a win!! Nice service and was not very busy at all!! Definitely worth a few trips back here for sure!! As Yoda would say "A happy patron, I am."

Everytime my family and I have the time, Urban is the place we head for QT and some great cooked dishes. Love the food and staff are always friendly.

Use to go here a lot when I was younger. Recently been going back. The service is friendly. The food is good especially the eggs Benny. A good spot! Only have photos of the French toast and Mediterranean breakfast

This is my go-to café for brunch! Fave is Chicken Livers with Mushrooms in Masala cream! Omlette is next brunch of choice! Service is always good!

Had bday brunch with 11 family members. I booked our seatings 2 days prior. 2nd time here. Great service, food magnificent. I would recommend

Friendly staff and I'm obsessed with their corn fritters. A bit on the expensive side but overall I like this place
Andrew Imms
Food and coffee good, staff very friendly. Thought bread could be fresher - other wise very good (prob 3 1/2 stars)
Lovely service.Had pancakes which were yum but needed to be cooked a little longer but were still good.
The hot drinks are a stand out the dude who does them sunday's are the best in Auckland i reakon.

Have been in this cafe twice now and we have enjoyed our experience both times. Meals are very good portions therefore the prices are reasonable. The big breakfast is very satisfying and the coffee is consistently good! Definitely recommended !

I'm not familiar with the cafes in Grey Lynn as I don't spend a lot of time in the area, but needed to find somewhere to get lunch while working there recently. Stumbled upon Urban Jungle and went in solely because the weather was terrible, and it looked so warm and inviting. Menu looks great, maybe a tad pricey but their pre-made food seems more affordable with plenty of vegetarian options. Friendly staff, delicious roast vegetable and feta panini (served with really good tomato chutney) with not too long to wait. The set up outside on the deck was great, it was blowing a gale and pouring with rain but you'd never know you were outside. Best part though was the Urban Jungle cat who seems to live there, (well in the outside part anyway) who came to say hello when I was finished eating. More cafes need resident cats!

Hey, just saw Urban Jungle on Close up, cool, although the story was about something else! Anyway prompted me to write this review. I have enjoyed coming to Urban for years now and just love the food there. I believe it's the same chef for the last 10 years! Nice proportions good value for money, I just manage to eat all on my plate, so filling, of course the big urban breakfast is my fav. Big feeds alright :)
Rob Clarke
Been to Urban Jungle many times in recent years, but this was my last visit.
The prices have bumped up considerably, especially when you consider we were overcharged by $1.50 on top of the actual price (if that was a surcharge for using the Visa, then they should have said, and their prices would suggest they could handle the visa cost).
The chicken liver and mushrooms tasted as good as it always has done, but it didn't seem to be quite as generous, and for $22.50 it didn't really seem like value for money.
The Greek Vege stack wasn't much of a stack, either.
The coffee was very good, but it really should be.
Was pretty disappointed the wifi I spotted on the way in was not actually available, which also seemed a bit rough.
Service was okay, not mind bogglingly fast, but not outrageously slow.
Sorry guys, we won't be back there for a fair while, we can get way better value elsewhere, and nicer food to boot.
Pravind Singh
Went in for lunch. Ordered a chicken wrap which was delivered grilled, felt like they had put a kilogram of cheese in it. Also had some chips and chicken nuggets which they forgot about and had to ask twice about my order. When it finally arrived, the nuggets were frozen inside. I returned this to the counter and the guy, appeared to be the manager, just stared at me. No apology or refund. Service was very slow. Only 3 tables at 1pm which led me to believe this place is struggling. Never go back.
Stephen Clarke
Huge great portions but this place has slipped over the last few months. I used to go for breakfast often but now the food is too oily, and also very slow. When you're having breakfast during the week before work, it is frustrating to wait so long for the order then have to eat it so fast to get to work in time. I hope they sort out the issues with the food, this place used to be great.
Bob
45 Minute wait for breakfast and food was still not ready. When asked how long until it would be served was rudely told it was coming. Asked for a refund to which I was handed the cash I had paid and grunted at. No apology. Service very poor, food over priced. Would not return

I really love the staff at Urban, they are very friendly when you walk into the cafe you are greeted with a warm smile. The food is always great and the coffee excellent.
