Review Govinda's Restaurant - Auckland Central

Joanie Badenhorst-Awasthi
The best thing for a cold and wet winter's day is good food and cosy conversation with a good old friend 🗣😋 Govinda Restaurant has very tasty, fresh, soothing food, prepared in the Sattvic way (meaning pure essence). Sattvic foods are thought to be pure and balanced, offering feelings of calmness, happiness, and mental clarity 😌☺ It's not overly spicy or salty or oily, just good food 🍛🍲 We finished off the meal with some beautiful masala chai ☕ There is a banquet hall for hire for weddings and parties 💍🥳 Attached to the restaurant is the Bhakti Centre, which is also a temple 🕉🕉
George
Pure vegetarian food, a large variety of dishes to opt. Owner is in the business and provides good service. Comparatively large dining area, hygiene and clean. They also have a 300 person capacity hall to cater for weddings or any other functions.
Danielle
The gentleman that served us was very helpful & made sure or meals were good. Servings were small so it's good to get a few dishes. The down side of having a few different curries is the price does add up. The place is very clean & would recommend to vegans and vegetarians as they have nice dishes & are -Vegetarian Society Approved-
Yogesh Nath
Yummy 100% vegetarian food. Very clean 'A' grade food certificate with plenty of parking. Friendly staff. Also the hall is available for hire. Visit the Hare Rama Hare Krishna Madir too. I think Uber food delivery is also an option. Must visit for Indian Authentic food in Auckland not too far from Sylvia Park in Mount Wellington.

Great vegetarian food and wonderful service. Very welcoming. Order at the counter. Takes EFTPOS and visa. Handwashing in the dining room. Free self service water.

Amazing vegetarian and vegan food and lovely service. All dishes were super tasty and we loved the kachori. Will definitely come back many more times to get through to whole menu
Epic01
Amazing. A huge range of Vegan/Vegetarian dishes to choose from. All the dishes were very good especially the Vegetable fried rice. The prices are very good too. Would recommend to try and will go back.

Delicious food and great value, so much diversity on one meal plate - rotis, 2 curries, dhal, rice, chutney, dessert. Easy going, relaxed spot, kind people, thank you 🙏
Vinod Vyas
Great taste, wide variety. Lots of Vegetarian and vegan options. Sandwiches, Indian curries, burger, pizza, chat items, pav bhaji, thali, idli, dossa, uttapam and many more. Very friendly and devotional service reasonably priced. Seating capacity of around 100 guests.

THE BEST FOOD! Came in to have dinner & we were completely blown away! Absolutely beautiful Vegan food, each spent around $20 & each had a huge array of curries, chutneys, breads, samosas, sweets etc, couldn't finish it all! I highly recommend this amazing place, lovely helpful service from the staff, even had a chance to view the gorgeous temple here.. Definitely will be back when we are in Auckland! Thank you so much for the delicious wholesome food, definitely could taste the love 😊

Food was okay, service was okay, and people were nice. I asked for dahi wada which was not there.

This is a must visit vegetarian restaurant for our family. Can’t say enough good words about the high quality of their food ingredients. Highly recommend it. We miss the food, and the wonderful cooks
Sarah Totton
Nice helpful man helped us choose... reasonably priced.. the desserts are yummy.
Matt Holder-Smith
Love coming here. Always so friendly and the food is amazing! Great vegan and vegetarian curries and other dishes. Huge variety.
Ella Ewens
Amazing vegetarian restaurant. Tasty starters, delicious dosa and lip-smacking curries. Went here for the first time a few weeks ago and then went back to the very next night! Don’t let the bright white lighting and decor scare you off. This unassuming, value for money, Hare Krishna gem won’t let you down! The husband, wife team that run are friendly? humble and lovely. Do pop in and try it.

Best authentic pure vegetarian Indian food in Auckland (i've tasted all). With a great little Krishna temple around back (a must see!), which is the only hindu temple in Auckland that has an attached restaurant. Their masala dosa is the best ever! Anything can be made vegan (without dairy) :) Great prices! 7 or 10 dollars for a plate!

No idea what I wanted or how to understand the menu but the kind friendly chef owner was very patient, listened to what I like (cauliflower and paneer) and helped me. Puri (fried flatbread) is awesome and I thought I'd only need 2x. He chuckled at me and recommend x6! He was right. The food is reasonably priced, exotic and tasty and the cooks are lovely. I was back again the following week to try new dishes. Biggest tip: when they say $35 for 2 they mean it. Its easy to order too much food... but worth it
Charlie Cooper
Wonderful food and they cater to vegans and gluten-free, too. I eat here regularly and haven't had a bad meal ever. I thoroughly recommend!
Michael Allen
Very delicious pure veg dinner plate and perfect cup of masala chai. Will definitely go again!

Wow ....cant believe i will get such a hopeless customer service, placed online order thn called to confirm the pick-up time, the guy first argues with me abt how i placed order becoz his printer was coming as blank after that he takes manuel order and huge price difference. As per him the price on the website is not updated and he said thats not their problem. He wanted me to pay the difference over the phone.....i said i will go by the web price than he says ,his not going to honour that than he just hang up on me.....I dont know if i will ever get the refund of what i paid for and if only i had asked the name of the person I spoke with.....he really need to get some customer service skills before answering the phone.

The combo meal was so delicious- every dish that came with it. Very friendly and helpful service and well priced. Will definitely be back now that I have discovered it.

Horrible experience never going to order again sorry ...I ordered a veg club sandwich guess what I got just some cheese in it worth $8.50 ...such a waste of money ...I would rather call it a cheese toastie.
Zenobia Gonsalves
Had the worst experience I could have ever imagined . The uttapam I ordered was raw at the centre and the coconut chutney along with another red chutney given along was spoiled and tasted awful with a bad after taste. I highly recommend that if you don't want to feel sick stay away from eating here.
Manisha Bhoola
Govindas food is exceptionally good - makes me think of home food. Thank you and Hare Krishna

A great place with soothing music and delicious indian food. Also, the staff is really polite and understanding. Definitely a place to grab your meals all day.
Ruby Treacy
Nice and spacious place. Absolutely lovely service. Amazing chai and great vegan options!
Nirpakh Tuteja
I had a thali takeaway and the curries were packed in foam containers which sucked up all the gravy part. And the curries were packed without any partition in the containers so all messed and mixed when i reached home.

If you're after authentic vegetarian Indian taste, check this place out. They have a wide variety of menu, great kick of spice in their food. Very nice place.
Benedict Uy
They have quite a lot of different Indian food on the menu which I thought was very overwhelming since there were so many choices. I ended up going with the Govida Special fixed meal. The meal had all a bit of everything, rice, bread, curries, and dessert. The serving was quite good, particularly for the price (This set meal was the most expensive item at $20). It was nice to try a range of different curries, the cabbage and pea one was really nice. The dessert (think it was a lapsi) was really good. The set meal was a good way to get a taste of everything.
Neha Maan
Super slow service and not good food even I brought sweets today not even half kg and they charged me $50 not going back again I am very disappointed
Hannah Bryan
Great food lovely staff and the chef recommendations were great!!!! I would come back here again. The bread puff they make is also very tasty.
Becky
Wow just went here for an early dinner with friends yummy food! We ordered three different dishes a chickpea curry, samosas and Govinda special. Each meal was very tasty and cheap. They catered to the whole table being vegan. Will definitely be coming back here.

Really disappointed for food...i order throgh uber eats.food came on time.but food quality is soooo bad..sooo much oil in puri they didn't soak it even well....pakoda is raw inside ,doughy .bhaji is just watery .come on guys you don't know how bhaji made...this is first time i placed order and i was so upset i felt empty after order food which nearly cost 50$..wasting money and stomach too...

Don’t walk in expecting to order a mild/medium/ hot butter chicken like a basic white person, this place is a whole level above that.

All dishes are vegatarian, and spiced the what they are meant to be.

Really delicious and affordable, a $12 std meal with your choice of 2x curries amongst the daily selection will fill you up.

A must try if you are looking for something off the beaten track of std food outlets.
Stephanie Whitfield
Love Govinda, it is one of our regulars. All of the food is amazing and amazing value. It is all vegetarian and served in a basic style. You don't get any choice for mild medium or hot, it just comes how it comes but is always delicious.

I usually get the standard meal which includes 2 curries, rice, puris, dhal, a poppadom and pickle. All comes for $12 and you roll out the door. My particular favourite is the capsicum masala.
Mezza
I absolutely love Indian food. Especially vegetarian Indian food. Therefore, I was extremely excited to try Govinda. Man, was I disappointed! Masala Dosa is one of my all time favorite food and this was the first time, I didn't finish it. The Dosa wasn't cooked long enough, therefore it was pale. The potatoes in the Dosa were under cooked as well. The sambar was watery! The two vegetable curries were OK but I couldn't tell them apart and my rice was cold. I really wanted this place to be good but I was highly disappointed.

We ate here using a voucher for a 'Deluxe Meal & Dessert Platter". There was one table of 3 seated in a large cold room, no background music & a lack of ambience. We asked if we could sit at the large BBQ-type table directly outside the door. That was fine we were told. Service was poor. The only staff member visible came & told us our food was ready & told us to collect it off the counter. Food was average. 'Dessert platter' was a very small bowl of semolina. The staff member seemed miserable & was exasperated when we asked about the flavours of sweets in the cabinet display. He was borderline rude. Strange experience--it seems to me you use vouchers to entice people to try your restaurant in the hope they return & pay full price. We won't.

I have been going here for last 2 years now:
1. Always found servings very less and pooris extremely oily.
2. The only reason I took a takeaway from this place as I thought it's like a donation as well, obviously I have other options to buy food from.
3. Four times found hair in food and I was told that I do something wrong!!!!that no one has complained about it.
4. Very poor tolerance for customer feedback
5. The vegetables are good in taste but with hair and fly!
6. They think they do me a favour by selling Thalis at nighttime to me as if they are the only ones in Auckland.
7. I was simply doing that since I have to buy food why not temple restaurant that way am donating too.
8. And to my utter surprise I was told not to come back if there is hair and I was treated badly for giving a review!
9. Had purchased sweets couple of times so bad they were that even ants won't come on it.
Simply the best Indian food in Auckland (other than my wife's cooking, naturally). This is the sort of food you would get if someone's grandmother cooked it or you stopped at a dhaba in the middle of nowhere on the road in India.

I have never had a bad meal there, and in fact, quite the opposite.

This is what actual Indian food tastes like. If you've only ever been to a Punjabi place that serves butter chicken to white people (i.e. most everywhere else in NZ) you are missing out.

The portions are generous and the food is made with love. There's one hilarious man who always claims to be catering for 500 people that night (it's always 500--it's never any other number--do they refuse catering jobs for 499 or less?) when he thinks you've stayed too long and not bought enough food, but it's a small price to pay for incredibly reasonable, NOT SPICY, rigorously authentic pure vegetarian Indian food. There's a set menu, but just get the $12 standard meal (thali) with two curries, dal and rice, and various garnishes and condiments (raita, pickle, chutney, papad). And ignore the fool who thinks the food is too spicy.

I got food poisoning. The mother gave us the ugliest stare when we 1st turned up although we had booked, made us feel uncomfortable. Food wasnt very nice she added a stale piece of fudge to our plates, food was to hot for our palates. I will never go back

The best place in Auckland to have a Indian Vegetarian/Vegan meal ! very clean place with humble staff. The price is great and the quantity of the food is good.
Charlie Cooper
A lovely, cheap vegan eating experience. The staff, especially Jai, are all very welcoming. They even cater to gluten-free diets. The ambience is very pleasant and they play great music!
Chirag Sutariya
I had a lunch and it was awesome. It is pure vegetarian with awesome spicy taste. The place was very neat and tidy.I also tried there sweets and they were very delicious in taste.

We had awesome meal at Govinda. It was very delicious and worth for it.The place was neat and tidy.It was pure vegetarian food.........We would like to have lunch again.
Steven Chen
This place would suit any open minded vegan with appreciation for Indian culture, the place is tidy with simple decor, the food is different from usual Indian tandoori style but tastes great, relates to the hare krishna spirit of purity, simple home made cooking.

I'm not usually one to write reviews but seriously this place.. Poor customer service. Had to get the menu and food yourself. Food was weird and not very appetising really. No wonder there were no other customers there. Definitely would not recommend to anyone.
Sheilagh Sutherland
We had a very pleasant meal at Govindas. There were twenty of us so the service was very slow.. It would help if we had had the menu described to us straight away. The food was very good and very reasonably priced. I liked it .
Sonam Pala
This place is a cheat, their food quality is 0. Indian food can taste this bad! To add further of a disaster, the quantity of food was less than appetite of child!! The rice were countable n literally spread over the plate to make it look full. If we pay full price then being so stingy is disgusting especially having a restaurant in a temple premises. Very small hearted people. The dhal was more water and potatoes were countable in curry. If u order takeaway you are charged extra for boxes. If we agree to pay than atleast fill up the boxes properly! Don't give business to such small hearted, stingy and greedy people who take full money but deliver almost nothing. On complaint, they don't seem to understand. Why do you think the place is always empty? If your smart, you will know why!
Harsh Vardhan Shrotriya
Good pure veg food(no onion, garlic). Cooked by family.
Need to have patience but, the wait is worth it.
Nice and clean place too.
Menu is different from normal Indian restaurants so, provides change of taste too.
Rashmi26
Me n my husband visited on weekend to try this place. Because my husband prefers food without onion n garlic. Govinda has lots of options available. We had chole bhature and Maisoor masala and tea.
We will visit again 😊
Orchid
This is typical homemade vegetarian Indian food. But warning service is slow. Likely cause they cook the food after you order fresh. So not your typical takeaway fare! It is priced well, the meals are more than adequate portions. The place itself is clean and simple. Go with an open mind as it is different from what you would expect.
Timea
We had to wait 40mins for our food in the empty restaurant (no other guests were there). We requested no spicy food for the children and it was really hot. Our order was mixed up by the staff two times and the portions are the half size as it shows on the picture. Above all, they have asked $5 for a handful of rice. Really unprofessional service!
Canistan Charles
Im sure i wil nt gonna be there in this restaurant anymore. I bought samosas ftom there, place was neat n tidy bt the thing is i saw their menu in zomato that they mention the samosa price is 1$ each bt once i ordered 5 samosas bt they charged me 10$, taste also bad and totally worthless
Ana Vegan Foodie
Excellent indian food. Vegan friendly. All meals can be made vegan. Simple and very clean decor. Must try for vegans . Yummy parathas. Must try. There's a beautiful Krishna temple . Food is energy...you get divine energy of non violence and love.
Ssan21
Fantastic simple food. Absolute delight!! No colors, no msg, no extra cream in curries to please the crowd. Authentic Indian just the way its made in Indian homes

I like puri bhaji the best made by Mr. Prafulbhai. He does lovely puris. Prafulbhai, you are the best puri maker I feel in Auckland. Keep it up and THANK YOU VERY MUCH for making great puris and other food. You are the best.
Gaurav
Nicely presented delicious food at affordable price.... Tucked in a corner in panmure.
If you love Indian vegetarian food blessed with spiritually Worth visiting...!
Polash Shariful Hasan
One of the worst experience even. N3ar to my home. Thats why tried once. Totally tasteless! Cheap eating but no taste. Wouldn't go there anymore.
I Am Hungry
We were here today, food is quite plain and very simple we did not think it would be so simple..but it was clearly mentioned in the menu..no garlic...no onion pure pure veg..so it was acceptable to us...ambiance is average..just like canteen nothing great..ample parking..good service..
We arrived to an empty restaurant. And went to the counter where the guy scanned my grab one voucher. And then just disappeared out the back?

Myself and my partner seated ourselves wondering what was happening?

10 mins later he called me up to the counter to pick up our entrees ( my partner was laughing as we had never been waved over before to get our meal???) This also happened for the main and dessert??? Did I mention that I'm 9 months pregnant 😯

We were given some sad looking fried bread balls, they had what tasted like old shriveled mixed vegetables in them onion and curry. With a sweet relish served on aluminium plates that my partner said reminded him of prison movie meals and me of a pets dish 😣 I must say this was the best part of the meal.

We received our mains, mines was very hot my partners was mild no one asked us what we would prefer? We were just given another silver plate with various different things on it that all tasted like hot curry. My partner had to go and chat with the guy just to find out what we were eating.

We got a small silver dish of an orange indian dessert to share I just wanted to leave but my partner not wanting to be rude asked for a doggie bag for the dessert, which he dumped in the rubbish as soon as we were out of seeing distance.

I wish zomato had a quarter rating.. I will only be going back to this restaurant if I am paid to eat here.

What a cool little place. Attached to a hare krishna worship centre, it is definitely not somewhere I'd usually go. The staff were so friendly. The food comes on giant metal plates (like a prison mess) but the food is delicious. All vegetarian which is a little strange to me, but down to earth and not pretentious like most vegetarian places in Auckland. It was so cheap. A dinner special for $10 which was easily enough for 2 people. The music is incredibly repetitive though. We had different curries, roti, daal, and poppadoms. Well worth a visit if you wish to step outside your comfort zone.

A neat little restaurant tucked away. Very nice & friendly, yummy food. Will definitely recommend to my friends. Restaurant is clean & food is good value.

We have been ordering take away's from Govinda, almost since the day they opened, i have found the food very tastefull and of a very reasonable price, the quality of the food is consistent, the service is great. The only drawback i found, is sometimes you cannot order certain dishes, due to the chef having a day off.
Helene
Love it! This is now my new favourite restaurant in Auckland. It is vegetarian with no garlic, onion which is rare to come by. The service is wonderful and staff very friendly. The food portions are generous (with a $10 meal, I was very full) and extremely taste. It isn't very crowded, but there is a nice vibe! Highly recommended!
Roach
If you are looking for good vegetarian food and an awesome price Govindas is the place! This type of indian cuisine is not your normal indian restaurant experience so dont expect large portion but there is plenty of stuff in the main meals to fill you up...we love Govinda and 4 adults can eat for 30 bucks!!!
Prashant Belwalkar
Excellent food, real value for money. $7 for 2 curries, Dal, Rice & Papad. $10 for 2 curries, Dal, Rice, 4 puris, sweet, pickle, papad. Now that's difficult to beat and the food choice is great too. Must visit.
Olivia Winstone
I had a very satisfying palak paneer meal here this week. I was curious about how a curry without onion or garlic would taste. Really good, actually! And the other spice flavours were interesting and excellent, I don't know how, but somehow I didn't particularly miss the onion and garlic (and was happy to avoid the 'garlic breath' aftermath too).

The style of palak paneer was very very creamy, and quite a pale green - not the dark style I'm used to. Very nice, and came with plenty of roti, a popadom, plus rice, and a really interesting soup. For $12 it was very generous in the carbs department. When I polished off my curry, and still had bread and rice left, the very friendly man offered if I would like more dhal or curry to finish it with.

I imagine there are times when this place is packed full of a hundred people, as it adjoins the Bhakti Centre. But then there are other nights like when I came on a rainy Tuesday when just two or three groups of diners are in situ, enjoying a meal for body and soul. The space is a bit huge and bright and white, but there's a warm vibe, when you can hear the folk in the room next door playing their hare krishna tunes.
