Review Umi Sushi Bar - Auckland Central

Wanted to grab something for quick lunch. So thought of trying their range of seafood skewers. I ordered Takoyaki octopus balls, Homemade tartare snapper tempura, Panko crumbed mayo prawns, Seafood mayo crab surimi tempura. All of them tasted good, quantity was good too. Staff was kind and helpful. Will try more of their skewers next time. Thank you.

5 stars for the oden egg on a stick. Only $3 for 2 super tasty eggs, and it comes in a nice little cup of oden soup! The other stuff doesn't look very good, but would definitely recommend the oden eggs!

Sushi and Japanese food lovers need to come here. Hundreds of menus. Rice or ramen. Drinks also served. Cheap and tasty.

Umi sushi was very polite and had great service. Enjoyed every moment there!
Natalie
Very friendly service and the udon noodles were delicious!
Venus Wong
Prices are super affordable and owner was nice! Portions are not too bad too.

Hands down my favorite sushi spot in Auckland so far. The price is unbeatable and the range of (PYO) sushi is vast, to the point where I struggle to choose what I want. I could eat their sushi every day. Highly recommended.
Juan Yang
The option is multiple and the food is yummy and fresh. Moreover, the price is reasonable and they have good customer service. If you want to try Japanese food, this restaurant is highly recommended.

Excellent food, great ambiance, good selection of drinks and fantastic service. Been going to this place for a while and never been disappointed. Great selection. Tastes good. Good value for money.

Donburi is very very good value ,only 6 dollars .and fresh sushi only 1 dollar .always be there for my lunch

Very very cheap ! Probably not the best quality of course but it’s cheaper than mc Donald’s and probably more healthy as well so we can’t complain...

This place is great, my daily place for sushi in the city. Friendly staff and great prices.

Just quick bite after class. <br/><br/>Wide selection.<br/>Average taste.<br/>Reasonable price.<br/>Clean food. I saw them throw the rest of sushi all away when finishing the day's work. No leftovers.

Sushi is pretty average but for what you pay it is not bad. Bought this bento box for $9 which is a great deal although food inside was not fresh.

There's 2 reasons I keep coming back here:- sometimes I'm stressed at work and I want fried everything- the half-deserted, dilapated food court vibe is an aesthetic in itself

It was a bit too early for lunch & so we only had the octopus skewer & the prawn skewer as snacks. They both looked pretty good in the cabinet, but unfortunately, they were not even "warm". Taste-wise, both of them were not bad at all.Visited on 29 April 2019

Sad to say this but the sushi was quite disappointing. The vegetable tempera roll was chewy and bland. I have purchased the onigiri here, as I was missing Japan. The previously purchased salmon one was yum but this tuna mayo had no flavour. All I got was the sourness from the rice.

I’ve come here multiple times (and to other locations) and it’s great. The sushi is really affordable and tastes good. I wouldn’t say the sushi is high quality though.

Lunch with friend in atrium on elliot, craving too much for salmon so i didn’t ever think about trying something else and went straight away to grab salmon donburi from umi and umiya sushi.. nice and good portion with good price - Denny Setiawan

Food here is very affordable, donburi's and rice boxes are average. Unfortunately their fried foods are poorly, fried chicken is burned and hard and tempura is old and soggy.
Cherries_inthesnow
Had the donburi...It was awful.<br/>As in I'm inwardly cringing just thinking about it. Rice must have been several days old and the lettuce was pretty soggy and sad looking...The chicken had a weird aftertaste.<br/><br/>Just don't even bother.<br/><br/>

Was good with cheap price. I couldn’t finish all. Dinburi was 6 dollars, the sandwich was 3.5. Very cheap. Haha But it was bit salty. I will come again but will try other dishes
Its Me
I feel like they re use triple use their shit.. seriously.. especially deep fried sushi.. i found a hair and half bitten ginger that they give you .. when I tried to bring it up they of course couldn't understand me

These guys have amazing prepacked vege+meat+rice or pasta combos! I ate there a lot. Sushi is very nice. But never buy cooked food from them. Ramen was very bad as well. Stay at sushi and prepacked food, and you cant go wrong!

Service was super slow, food is cold and too salty. The staff wasn’t helpful. The food presentation is ok but the size is too small. Not recommend!
Yt.khoo
Salty, dry and unfriendly services! Not recommend to anyone. Ordered udon noodles, tempura, Grilled seafood salad, none of them taste good. Super bad service. But mostly importantly bad food.

Decent place around the atrium<br/>They offer a lot of japanese food and I really mean a lot<br/>I can't exactly recall all the food that I ordered but it taste good, however it wasn't hot anymore <br/>nonetheless it was fine hopefully they'll find a way to keep the food warm next time<br/>Will try more of their food soon again hopefully next time it's hot

Best $6 lunch in Auckland. I would give them 5 stars if they returned to using cabbage instead of lettuce in the donburi. Food is usually nicest and freshest around lunchtime when they're at their busiest. It can be a bit old by late afternoon.

Don’t go here I got the beef spring roll and 3 pieces of sushi, clearly had been sitting there for a while and was very stale. Beef in the spring roll was disgusting and tasted/looked like cat food.

What I love about this place is how you can choose whatever sushi or items you want, instead of having to buy a whole pack of the same sushi. There is a huge variety of $1 sushi and most of them are actually really decent. I've never tried the hot food so can't judge it.
Teiva Cassart
Bad experience, cold food, taste like it was from 3 days ago! Not fresh, unfriendly service. Do not recommend. Stay away, go to Bruce Lee's or Sushi Pac!
Jake Bartley
This place is very appealing that has a variety of different foods but i have to say that the quality is not top notch! being cold and not hot, it also seems like the food is not fresh, if you change that then this place will go somewhere!
Lissy Fehnker
This place literally has the the best salmon donburi I've ever had. Comes with salad and miso, lots of fresh veges and two choices of sauce (teriyaki or spicy pepper). Generous portion of salmon. All for $13. Sushi selection also looks amazing. Yum!!!
Neeraj Kumar
I usually don't review Sushi outlets because they are all reasonably good but this place was a serious let down! The hot fried items were cold and tasteless and the sushi was warm, it almost did not seem safe to eat.

You get great variety of Sushi's here and apart from Sushi they sell awesome other side dishes. They have so many branches in the CBD itself and I enjoy their Teriyaki Chicken Sushi and Teriyaki Chicken on Brown Rice Sushi.I tried their Spring roll which was also vert tasty. They sell $1 Sushi each deal....which again attracts a lot of Sushi lovers.

One of my other favourite university haunts was Umi and Umiya Sushi located in the Atrium on Elliot foodcourt. A lot has changed in this mall over the years but nice knowing this store is identical to how I remember it. Lots of sushi choice, lots of non-sushi choices, well priced, though the food does rank average at an individual level. For a sushi newbie it’s a fantastic choice with lots of options to please any shade of appetite and you can easily end up paying in the single digits too, which is a boon. The teriyaki glazed and fried things are my recommended picks, and the staple $1 standard sushi rolls are not to be discounted either.
I_like_pickles
Situated in the food court in Atrium on Elliot, I think this is the biggest store of the Umiya Sushi chain.<br/><br/>There is so much variety and choices, you could have something different every day.<br/><br/>I love how you can just choose whatever you want and make up your own sushi pack.<br/>I also love the sugar coated Japanese donuts near the counter.

Their sushi was okay but nothing to rave about ? Didn't seem too fresh but still tasted okay. I don't thnk I would buy sushi from here again, or maybe just the stuff that's glad-wrapped
Nathalie
Been coming to this place for couple of years now and it's been my fav Japanese cheap eats. Lots of choices, OK quality not the best but then again you pay for what you get... My only concern is that their hot food isn't hot (sort of warm and soggy) but other than that it's great place for quick and cheap meal!
Chef Studio
Worst lunch ever , all deep fried food was cold , soggy and absolutely taste less . Couldn't finish half of it . Miso soup was ok but again was warm not hot . I am still confused that how can they serve poultry and seafood cold as it can kill someone .
Tavita Milford
Their sushi are so huge but worth the price. Every time we'd finished a movie, we would walk across the street and get some sushi just for a munch.

This is my go to sushi when I forget to bring lunch and I don't feel like eating porridge I have stashed in my draw.<br/><br/>Bomb ass sushi is all I can say! It's cheap, fills you up and has so much flavor.<br/><br/>Today I got: <br/>Crab sushi $1 <br/>Teriyaki sushi $1<br/>Salmon Tempura $2<br/>Honey soy rice balls $1.80<br/>Garlic soy chicken nibble $1<br/><br/>
Stango
$1 sushi range isn't as large as the store close to AUT, but can't complain. There are a lot of other options (for a bit more $) but they're great if you're wanting food on the go. The crunchy chicken nibbles in spicy sauce was great - not soggy at all but has quite a kick).

Spent $8.00 for this super size Korean style rolled egg loaf. Good taste and good texture. There is a paradise of awesome Korean street food and $1.00 Japanese sushi.

@ 1st impressions, what a great range of products,,,,at the start the tempera and fried food,s ok..then it all goes down hill from there, while it's look,s appealing to the eye,the odd piece of sushi we had tasted stale and pretty well going off!!.. Being in the hospitality industry ,I always know what quality of product I produce for my customers and that should be no different here!!!...very,very poor!!!!... And .why didn't I complain???...there was a lunch time que....thats 10+ customers that may never return??"word of mouth?"..they just shot them selves in the foot by even trying this on!!..and why would you??...isn't this your livelihood ???<br/><br/>

Like the other branch close by, it's a nice place for a cheap bite of sushi. The sushi here is pretty average in the sense that the rice is the weak part of the chain which detracts the overall taste of it. <br/><br/>That being said, the variety is much bigger and they offer much more than just sushi.<br/><br/>Food: 5/10<br/>Service: 3.5/5<br/>Ambience: 2/5<br/>Value: 4/5<br/>Overall: 14.5/25

I have been going to this place for years. they were always really good. cheap, wide and delicious range and good service. but I went there recently and saw that they now have a health and safety rating of "E". So I won't be back for a while, if at all.
Victoria
Not the freshest, not the best quality but lots of range, cheap and tasty for what you're paying for. Good for a quick bite if you happen to be shopping in the area and a nice novelty with a lot of inventions I haven't seen before.<br/><br/>You won't leave raving but you won't leave hungry.
Annie Ren
Popular chain sushi restaurant, has a humongous variety of sushi, Japanese snacks and finger food. However I'm not a great fan of their fried sushi rolls as it didn't taste as fresh and often quite dry and hard. The hot food is always a plus as it's unique to Umi Sushi and are quite nice most of the time.
I'm Hungry
Cheap and affordable and good assortment of sushis. Iv practically had everything here. Nothing very great about the sushi here. But its great for quick and cheap bite.
Amy
Used to love this place due to cheap sushi (couldn't go wrong with $1 a piece for majority of the sushi). <br/><br/>Went back last night wanting to get some for dinner after work and saw the food hygiene grading of "E"<br/><br/>Never going back again until they get it fixed!
Mikayla Plaziuk
Will never go back. I understand that it's a place where you pick the sushi yourself so can't be an A health rating but the fact that it is an E is beyond me as to why it's still open. The sushi is not fresh either. Don't recommend at all
Serge Foodini
I'm quite surprised to see such low ratings for this sushi takeaway.its by any means not a 5-star-luxurious restaurant but really good for finger food snacking if you got a bit hungry.the sushi portions (especially fish component )are big enough and well presented comparing to other sushi places.a big variety of food is another major place.

Worst sushi I have ever had in my entire life.<br/>I am a salmon sushi lover. I went to this place to have ddukbokki (korean spicy rice cake) but then I couldn't find it so I asked the staff. The staff gave me a confused look then a lady behind her who seems to be the owner told me it was sold out with a sarcastic smile. Well I didnt feel good but I thought because I came all the way to here so I might as well just have sushi for my lunch! I picked 3 salmon rolls and 1 grilled salmon nigiri. Those sushi were HORRIBLE. The worst sushi ever. I felt like I was chewing an old melt down gum when chewing the salmon. Grilled salmon nigiri tasted nothing. It had no taste!! And it costed me 2.60. I'm still upset remembering the day. <br/>Kebabs and fried food are just average and some cannot be found easily from other places so if you are going for that go ahead but if you are going for sushi, I highly recommend you not to.

Good A la Carte menu, but food is very cold like its taken out of refrigerator and served. Chicken's not cooked properly... taste is not so good but can't guarantee going there again....
