Review Wardani Indonesian Food - Auckland Central

Joseph Raczynski
Solid Indonesian food in an unlikely food hall with about 15 other restaurants of all Asian backgrounds. This outpost is the furthest back on the main floor of two floors. Most of the dishes are from 11 - 13 NZD. None of the restaurants appear to sell drinks. You have to go to the only one in the center on the main floor that only sells beverages. Im a picky eater and most asian restaurants in NZ are bad but this one is a true gem. Not too salty or sweet like most of the other asian restaurants, this one stays true to authenticity and I love it. Next time im in NZ I will come back for sure

Rendang set was pretty tasty. Worth a visit. It’s located in an Asian food court; all the way in a corner.

One of the best Beef Rendang's I've had. The quantity was good and the service was friendly. It even came with a delicious bowl of hot soup!

Read the reviews and had to try it. Wasn't disappointed! Good yummy food at decent prices. Great for a takeaway dinner on a cold, wet night Recommended!

Best Indonesian you can find around Auckland. Lived in Indonesia for 15 years and it takes me back. Nothing too fancy but close enough to the real thing.

My go to place at food alley! Food’s always good, can ask for extra spicy if you prefer, friendly staffs, good portion for the price. My personal favourite is ayam balado

Food: 5/5
Service: 4/5
Overall: 5/5

I ordered wardani soup (chicken soup with light coconut cream) with rice. It was only $11 and I could even choose to have a combo of prawns and tofu in the soup. I really like food with coconut cream and this soup was full of the coconut cream and curry flavour. Lots of vegetables inside the soup also. I would say this was one of the best food court food I’ve had so far.

Little shot tucked away in the far corner of Food Alley on Albert street that serves some good Indonesian food in general. The pricing is also pretty decent. That said, the only time I was disappointed was when I realised my Fried rice didn't come with those amazing Indonesian crackers even though it was mentioned on the menu.

Have been to this place many times. Love their food. Tasty and cheap. Nasi goreng and ayam balado are the best. The owner is friendly. But it is located on one of the oldest food court in downtown area. Would love to see this food court to be more modernized.

Had the beef fried rice for lunch and it was great. Reasonable serving with lots of beef for $11 and tasty too! Would be handy if they had menu options that didn't include rice for takeaway

The big display of their menu items caught my attention. Was really useful to include small descriptions and photos of the items, especially for an indecisive person like me.

Gave the peanut sauce chicken a go. The grilled chicken appeared to be very dry as I poked at it. I was wrong. It was tender and sort of just melted away in my mouth. And the peanut satay sauce? It was sweet, coconutty and rich in favour. The perfect sauce for the chicken.

Unique flavours and good chicken; not bad for $11.

After a quick meal before heading back to work to continue a rather strenuous day, I literally went to the closets food alley unit which was Wardani. I’ve had rather mixed reactions about Indonesian food, I’ve had some fabulous dishes at friends houses and some horrible ones at restaurants so I’ll admit I was a little nervous eating at Wardani. Being limited with time I literally just looked at the wall menu and picked number 1 which was Beef Balado.

Better than I expected, the pickled veg was crunchy and had a light sweetness which really complimented the coconut rice and beef. The beef had such a refreshing taste for summer that I strangely I felt revitalized. I don’t know if it was the sundried tomatoes or the pickled veg but combined together the meal was actually pretty impressive. Looks like I may have found my new food alley favorite.

Showstopper: Beef Balado – Restoring my faith in Indonesian Cuisine

Overall Grade: B+

Authentic indonesian food. Great tasty food, they have a good range of dishes on offer. my favourite is the chicken satay. It comes with rice, 5 satay sticks, indonesian pickles, & a bowl of soto soup.

Love their Spicy Chicken Fried Rice. My go-to lunch place and conveniently located just across the street. Quick and fast service and always greet me with a smile. Great good and great service.

Ordered a chicken soup (soto ayam) and the corn fritters (bakwan jagung) and loved it! might be due to me missing indo food though. Went with my friend who's a non-indonesian and she loved the dish I ordered. Absolutely love the corn fritters (+ the sambal was AWESOME! it was reallyy spicy). The chicken soup was a bit bland and watery, I expected richer flavor. It was served with rice which is weird, should've put more glass noodle inside instead. The food took quite some time to be served, but the lady who i assume was the owner was so nice. we had a little chat (because fellow Indonesians, duh).

totally would love to come back and enjoy the other variety of food, :)

For someone who's craving for Indonesian Food, this is the best you can have in the city. But at the top of it, its the Halal one. So all indonesian and moslem can have it. I try Chicken Kalasan, Bakwan Jagung aka Corn Spritter and Fried Rice.

Have tried almost all the joints in food alley, this one isn't so bad specifically the taste very authentic. However they took 30 min to make the dish (two of them), I do go during lunch hour but that's the whole point to grab quick meals. The Beef Balado's portion was very little and Prawn chilli was average, there is intense competition there with various joints you can't have people waiting for half an hour when they come during work hours to grab quick lunch. Wouldn't try it again.

Went here as I was craving for lamb fried rice. Portion is gigantic and decent price. Food was great, makes me miss my home with quite a lot of lamb slice. Owners are very friendly too. But its a little bit oily, making you feel thirsty afterwards. And fried prawn crackers would definitely elevate the dish :p

Food was good, fresh and authentic. Visited this place when it had newly opened. They have nice indonesian chicken combos to try from. Cant remember which one I had. Here's the photo.

I am disappointed by the fried rice. It was not even worth mentioning.

However, the chicken balado was superb. I'm guessing some menu is very good and some is not.

Really great Beef Rendang and if you ask for spicy, you get spicy with is good for NZ! Always head straight in here when at Food Alley. Always seems pretty busy whatever time of the day - it's at the very far right hand corner of F.A.

Best Indonesian food I have tasted so far (yes, I am Indonesian and I do know when the food tastes authentic).

Had the Soto Betawi and Terasi Noodle (Mie goreng terasi), both tasted rich and flavorful, also tasted like home. Love their chilli sauce (Sambal), it was spicy and delicious. Sambal is definitely not for people who can't handle spicy, but for those who can, it is delicious. You can, of course, order food without it being spicy at all.

Also had the Corn Fritters (Bakwan jagung), which is also a meal that I can vouch for its authenticity. Tastes almost exactly as the bakwan jagung I always had back then in the warung-s.

Will totally come back to cure home sickness! Great for fellow Indonesians and those who would like to taste real Indonesian food in Auckland.

Pokoknya, nggak bakalan menyesal! Keep up the great job!

Changed owners food no way near as good. I'm gutted as I used to make a special trip here to eat. Service has gone down hill too..........................

Very nice food with reasonable price. I have tried many dishes on their menu, but I like the most the Seafood wardani which serves with jasmine rice :)

Im not sure what they mean by 'No MSG' but whatever they served left us really thirsty for water later! Hmm..

Food is okay, tasty and adequately flavourful. Unfortunately, they don't have some of the more authentic Indonesian food like ketuprak... or maybe even a selection of Balinese-type dishes, which makes whatever is offered pretty close to Malaysian (Malay) food.

it's hard to find a good indo restaurant, let alone one with some authentic dishes (most of them out there are only selling indo-style dishes, instead of REAL indo dishes). i live in albany, north shore, so i have been going to the albany branch ever since they opened their door few months ago. im a big fan of their nasi padang, and i think it's as good as you can get in NZ. i was so ecstatic when i saw they're running specials on the daily deals site and i jumped on it straight away. but to my disappointment, the amount of food i was getting when i ordered my nasi padang with the voucher was considerably less than when it's full price. at normal price, you would get a full size of rice, 2 chunks of chicken (normally 2x wings), good size beef rendang, deep fried boiled egg and some steam vegetables. with voucher, i was getting a less rice, 1x piece of chicken, no steam vegetables, and the egg was only boiled one. it was a let down for me. i can't understand why do a special if you're gonna let your customer down ? for someone who don't normally buy, you obviously could get away with it, but to the regular customers, they will know what's missing. there is nothing in the voucher stating that you'd be getting less foods than what you normally get at full-price. it's a shame really as i had family relatives with me when we bought the foods (and they are the regular too so they know what they're normally getting). i would rate this restaurant at least 4 out 5, but this experience spoiled it for me.
