My husband and I walked up to Ponsonby to find somewhere to have dinner. We saw a sign for this place and proceeded up stairs to a lovely Chinese restaurant. Very nice setting, the food was just amazing...we ordered 5 dishes and 2 600mls bottles of Chinese beer. Was sooo cheap!!!! The food was delicious and piping hot....this is going to be our new local for sure - best dinner experience I have had in ages...and we eat out a lot!

Great for a big group. The dumplings were so yummy and the service good! I will be back! Also added bonus of byo in central Ponsonby! It is a great place to start a night out!

Amazing place, cheap food for Ponsonby !!!Great service and good food I have had the dumplings a few times there and they are some of the best in the area good to know I can get my dumpling fix with out going to far away from home. Will go again

Delicious food, better than expected service and decor. Great prices! Definitely will be back again! Compatible to Barilla dumpling but a better location and I even think it felt cheaper!

Absolutely terrible! Probably the worst Chinese food I've had in a long time! The service wasn't that good(quite rude waitress actually). Our dumplings were semi-frozen for some reason. Definitely would not recommend to anyone.

Nice Dinner😋 Peking Duck is my favorite one！<br/>Sizzling Lamb might be the popular one🤡And the place is very comfortable with warm lights. Good services from the nice people at the same time ！！<br/>It is really a good chineses restaurant to relax and enjoy with friends. and also my first choice for chinese meals.

Food is alright, even though is not entirely traditional Chinese cuisine. My favorite one (and maybe the only reason I'd go back) are the boiled dumplings in sweet chilli sauce. I recommend the fried eggplant, potato and capsicum in oyster sauce too. <br/><br/>Don't bother with the general tso chicken. Is just fried chicken in sweet and sour sauce, pretty average. Try the sizzling lamb instead.

Good location, warm ambiance and a friendly & courteous staff.<br/>Must try: Deep Fried Squid, Sizzling lamb (this were really good), and combination fried rice if you are hungry and looking for a good portion. I also called for a Chilli Fish Fillet, but that was very ordinary, maybe cuz the use of frozen fish. Good place to hang out with friends and large groups too. I would definitely recommend this place for the meal portions, location and ambiance.

Got there on their last hour.<br/><br/>Walked up the stairs with Kendrick Lamar playing which was a bonus.<br/><br/>Got seated immediately.<br/><br/>Waiter set up our table straight away with menus and water for the table to follow.<br/><br/>My friend ordered General Taos chicken. I ordered the sizzling beef with black pepper sauce. Also got Sweet corn soup <br/><br/>Not long after we got our food.<br/><br/>We also ordered the or cocktails.<br/>Compared to other restaurants in the area this one does not meet the criteria.<br/>Reason being is because this place is a cheap eats with "Dominion Road Prices".So my rating itself is based on that.<br/><br/>Cheap price, good food, great service.

My friend and I went there the other day. The overall experience was really good.<br/>Food: 3.5/5 We ordered three dishes and one mixed fried rice. The fried rice was alright, not the best one but definitely worth a try; plus the portion is really big. Two of us couldn't finish one portion.<br/>I highly recommend the lamb dish they have, it comes on a sizzling plate. It's my favourite one.<br/>I also suggest others try the fried squid dish, it was crunchy and flavorful. <br/>Not a big fan of the fish dish. I think it's the first one on the seafood page of the menu. Fish was a lack of flavour. <br/>Decoration: 4/5 We were on a side small table. It was a little darker than the main dining area. But there was a mini lamp on the table so you can read the menu and enjoy the meal. The overall decoration is nice.<br/>Service: 5/5 Their service is very quick. We almost seated immediately once we went there. The waitress organised our table first before she cleans up the other table she was busy at. It shows they all have very good sense of job priorities. All the staff we have encountered have good manners and good English skills. They engaged with us, and with a smile and be polite.

Very good Chinese food. If you like spicy and delicious you should come here. Yes the service is not a Ponsonby restaurant standard. But look at their menu and their daily specials, what more can you expect a damn good deliciously cheap restaurant right in the central of Ponsonby road??

My friend told me, if you wanna have REAL dumpling in ponsonby just go to xiaodan! I went their last night and wasn't dissapointed at all. In fact I love the this place now! Dumpling was one of the best dumpling I had in auckland! Waiter was nice and friendly but little bit of language barrier but nevertheless I love the food and atmosphere! I would suggest this place if you wanna enjoy authentic dumpling in CBD area:)

There's no suprise this place is always empty. The service is absolutely abysmal. <br/>You would think that being the only table dining in the large space would mean the waitress would be able to attend to you often. Unfortunately this isn't the case here. They are rude. They speak very little English and they try to avoid serving you at all costs. <br/>We return for the dumplings simply because they're good and cheap - without these the score would be much lower. <br/>It's also cold and looks exactly like the Greek restaurant that occupied the space before. <br/>Go for dumplings but don't expect much.

Been to this restaurant many times now! Especially the atmosphere of the restaurant is excellent compare to other Chinese restaurant in Dominion Rd. Service is great and their spicy food is amazing! My recommend is "HOT CHILI SLICED BEEF POACHED" you have to try it if you love spicy food! i would recommend this place if LOVEEE spicy food or want get something ASIA at Ponsonby with reasonable price!

Been here several times and enjoyed the food, but it seems like each time it gets worse and worse. Food is still nice, but overall loss of quality. Service got a lot worse too. Waiter forgot to serve water, despite that we've only just sat down.<br/><br/>There's also an extra charge of 15% on public holidays. Had to find out the hard way today on Christmas. It doesn't seem fairly priced to me and I've had lunch at CBD the same day on Christmas and didn't need to pay any surcharges. They also don't tell you this upfront so there's no way of knowing. They also charge you for a takeaway bag and the 15% surcharge applies here as well. Whatever...

I've eaten here at Xiao Dan Restaurant many times, I keep coming back because the food is so good and it's very reasonable. The dumplings are always good, but better still is the kung po chicken and the sichuan style dishes, it's also byo which makes for a cheap night out in Ponsonby.

We've been meaning to try this place for awhile! My partner and I dined in last week for dinner. The restaurant is a good size with secluded dining booths - ideal for groups. ( I think this use to be a Turkish place before)<br/><br/>Although the service was not the worst we've had, it was lacking attention and that was the let down during our visit. If improvements can be made here they would do really well.<br/><br/>We ordered the Eggplant, capsicum and Potato dish (minus the capsicums) which I would recommend as a vegetable dish and we really enjoyed. The pan fried dumplings (tofu and cabbage) were nice but definitely needed some chilli sauce for more flavour. The food was reasonably priced although we just ordered a vegetarian main and the dumplings (which were on special)<br/><br/>We missed the green tea which is normally complimentary at Chinese restaurants. <br/><br/>I would happily return for another meal here during the lunch time menu as they have some decent price and good options..fingers crossed we'll get some green tea ;) <br/>

I heard about this restaurant from a friend, and decided to try it out. It was a fantastic experience! I really enjoyed the variety and quality of the menu, and the dining space made me feel comfortable. I hope to come back again! Good job to the people at Xiao Dan.

We were told by friends that it was one of the best Chinese restaurants in Auckland. It failed to prove its worth, highly expensive lucky had a groupon voucher. The dumplings at new flavour or barilla are way better and cheaper. The ambience was good but the food was disappointing. Overall I would recommend this place only if you want a calm ambience with Chinese food.
