Review The Flying Moa Pub - Auckland Central

The Flying Moa is a great find. If we had not used First Table we would not have discovered this Mt Wellington local. The plates are large, maybe too big. However the tastes were great. We recommend the Fish and Chips and the Ribs (the small is huge). The Caramel Pork Bites were awesome! Parking right outside. Servers very friendly, we had a great chat and lovely evening.

What a surprise find! Don't just drive by worth a stop. Food surprising good, great music, not too loud to have a conversation. Starters larger enough for lunch. Lovely Indian waited remembers us from previous week

We hade 3 drinks each cocktails were good, prawn and pork roll was absolutely delicious!!!!!! Steak meal was good but not for $50 side was chips and bok choy not really what I would expect on a steak meal, didn’t apply my joypab code when they said they had, unsure where we were supposed to wait as no one came to where the waiting area was so had to go up to the bar. But servers were awesome!!

I went there 45 minutes before closing and not many options were available. As I wasn’t starving, I didn’t bother. Ordered some fries and a mocktel of lemon. It came out fast thankfully and it tasted just fine. Overall service was good and staff friendly.

Nice place, nice atmosphere reasonable priced!! I've been a few times and the food and drinks are always great. Recently i ordered the chicken schnitzel with smashed potatoes and green beans and it was delicious. My friends ordered the Csesar Salad with chicken and that too was great. The place was packed and service time was reasonable. Highly recommended.

I went there to celebrate my birthday and had an amazing experience. Therefore, I decided to do the Christmas party of where I work there as well. I must say that in both events I only got compliments about the food, service and atmosphere. Thank you so much for having me and my people both events and leave so many good memories. Special thanks to Cymone (amazing management) Definitely recommended!!

Drinks here were great and quick to arrive, but food seemed a bit hit-or-miss, especially for the prices. That is, when we eventually got the food. This place often has great, fun events, so I will be returning at some point. Last night was probably just a bad night to visit.

I have been frequenting The Flying Moa regularly over the last few months. The staff are amazing and welcoming. Whenever customers walk in they are greated by one of the staff and escorted to a table of their choice. Service is always with a smile and prompt. Once the customers leave the tables are cleared and cleaned. Grace is one of the ladies who makes my experience at The Flying Moa a pleasure and she deserves a top rating.

We had the lamb shank with mash as well as the chicken schnitzel burger (with lettuce wrap instead of the bun) and fries. I also had a caramilk hard shake which didn't seem particularly alcoholic. Food was excellent, tender and well presented. Probably my biggest criticism was that the meal was a bit on the expensive side. In summary, loved the food as well as the service and surroundings. However a good night out could have been a great night out if they reigned in the price a bit.

friendly staff, smilling all the time. we ordered full ribs and beef cheek for lunch, both take times, the staff was taking care of our worries. Speaking of food, beef cheek and mash tastes great, so tender and juicy. 8 out of 10 while the ribs is a bit over the time. it's dried outside, but still tender inside, I would give 5 out of 10.

Came in around 1100 but the kitchen didn't open until 1130. We were able to look through the menu and order both food and drinks when we were ready. As expected, it wasn't busy so we were able to order when we were ready. We were informed that the meals wouldn't be prepared until the kitchen was ready. I was really disappointed with the hot white chocolate and coconut drink. The idea was interesting with a piece of chocolate on a stick which you can pour hot milk into. The white chocolate was quite bland and the coconut was desiccated so you didn't get much coconut flavour and the coconut bits weren't very nice to drink. The buffalo cauliflower was alright, nice crispiness but I just found the hot sauce to be on the sour side. The zoodle salad was very nice. Quite good flavours and nice bits of kumara and nuts to give more flavours and textures. Quite a nice and large pub in the area. Food is quite nice and the service was also quite good.

Awesome venue. We had the steak on the volcanic stone and it was one of the best eating experiences I've had in a while. The bar staff were very friendly and extremely helpful even on a busy night. Really looking forward to going back, maybe for some chicken wings. Seriously though.. Try the steak!!

Easy booking a table online. Menu has lots of options for everyone. Colouring in for the kids. Was very busy as the warriors game was on. Service was hit and miss, slow and unattentative, had to go looking for staff. Food was delicious. Lots of gluten free options. Kids enjoyed their meals.

We go there every couple of weeks for a lunchtime drink and Pizza, its a good place to go, easy parking, food is good pub grub and it has a good bar. Rashmi is very friendly and helpful
Andrew Durie
Tasty food, handled a large group well though the numbers felt like it pushed the kitchen as the time from when food was coming out until the last table was served was longer than I would have expected. That said, front of house staff were polite and helpful. The view from the smokers area is better than anywhere else.

Been here few times always happy with their service. <br/>But tonight we were shock by the portion of the steak... so tiny 😂<br/>Wish we had the first waitress to serve all night. The second waitress was in a mood I guess.... <br/>other than that things were great, but we probably won’t drive all the way just to visit here again.
Karina Grant
Third try and again the food was very below average unfortunately. Service slow, unenthusiastic and zero interest in up selling. Hard to recommend

Taste good when I first visited on 2019 but standard dropped gradually . Not even come again after 29 Feb 2020 .

To the idiot male in charge of the bar, thanks for being so rude. Your customer service sucks and we will make sure we pass this on. Your loss for sure.

Went for dinner...Was just sitting in my tall stool with much effort when the young waitress came along and immediately launched in to the specials. As I didn't catch them as hadn't sat yet I said "sorry can you repeat that ? and her reply was " doesn't matter and she flounced off.Rather speechless.Give a person time to sit down before you try to impart the information. Daughter and I just looked at each other in disgust and left. Have been there once before and did not have any complaints about the service and the food was lovely but I won't be going there again .

We went for the $10 burger special held every Saturday. We didn’t know fries weren’t included but that’s alright. I love the look of the place but the burgers were just okay.. chicken and waffle defintely the best. It took slightly long for our orders to come out despite the restaurant being like 1/3 full? Would come back though.

I’m rating my visit 3.5⭐️ <br/><br/>Theyve a wide variety of food in their menu. Since i wanted to try more drinks, just ordered the snacks type - pork bao buns and chicken karaage. The bao was good, but would have been better if theyve used hoisin sauce for the bao. The chicken karaage was ok, but wasnt as tasty as im used to, plus it was greasy. <br/>The mango cocktail was just ok, real pricey for half a glass- and to think the glass was pretty small and filled it up with so much ice. The second british cocktail i tried was better— it was not listed in the cocktails menu, but was recommended by one of the staff, liked that better as it was only $10, serving size was good. <br/><br/>The baileys drink and banoffee tart was alright. <br/><br/>I liked the fact that they had a beats by bingo (not sure if thats what its called).. where you play bingo through beats that they play for a few seconds. It was a good activity for a team night i must say. <br/><br/>Staff was pretty nice, ambiance good as well, i guess ill be coming back again.

Nice bar and restaurant we’ve had a few dishes that we’re all great, even the kids enjoyed their time and meal. And frequently have nightly specials.

Has the best ribs I've ever eaten! The all you can eat ribs is definitely one of those things that you must have atleast once in your life. The chef is soooooo good! Highly recommend! The meat just falls off the bone. You don't even need knives

I like coming here, but the food not as good as used to be. And no good vegetarian, vegan option on the latest menu. Hopefully it will get better.

Great place for weekend brunch with family. Kids and pet friendly. Friendly service, food comes fast, serving size generous and competitively priced compared to other cafe/bar eatery around the area. We like that they do have a deal in the Entertainment book and do come here when we are in the area. They also do loyalty points so make sure you sign up for the joyclub rewards beforehand.

There was a couple with a dog on the opposite table to us. Due to this the wind blew dog hair into our food 3/4 of the way through our meal. The first time this happened only one strand of hair flew into my plate so I just took it off. However on the second time, the wind blew a chunk of hair which honestly made the rest of my meal unpalatable. Whilst I understand that this was not fully the restaurants fault, the way they dealt with it was extremely poor. When we first informed the waitress she looked at us blankly asking “what do you want me to do about it”. She did not even act apologetic about it. Finally, she sent it back to the kitchen and did not get back to us for about 20 minutes. After this she said she could not offer us a full refund nor a partial refund. They could only offer the cook the PORTION that was uneaten. Talk about stingy. As I was leaving town that evening, I did not want the food as no one would eat it. The waitress then told us she would get the manager but did not do so. We had to speak to TWO other waitresses to get the manager. After going back and forth we finally settled on a dessert free of charge. The manager only apologised at the END once we made our dessert order. The other two waitresses were nicer and more helpful. Honestly this experience has put me off the restaurant as a whole. Poor customer service.

It’s been a while since we visited this pub. Food was worst then ever. The coatings on the crumbed prawns was so hard and almost inedible. My friend ordered the pork ribs which seemed ok. I didn’t sample it as I am not a pork eater. There was quite a wait for the food even though the restaurant wasn’t exceptionally busy. The only one best thing was the Unicorn 🦄 cocktail. It was so lovely. In fact, I never ever had a Unicorn cocktail before. Thanks to the young waitress who recommended it.

Outstanding service from the waitresses. The place has all you can eat ribs for $20. Its impossible for me to  give anything less that five stars for a deal like that. Great ribs. Special mention to Jade V for the kind and generous service, over and above the call. Would recommend The Flying Moa (esp ribs) to all

Had a great time and nice farewell drinks for one of our mates last night. Our lovely waitress Chelsea was very friendly and welcoming right from our arrival. Keep up the good work, Chelsea😊 Your colleagues were nice, too. Cheers, Theresa

We have come here a few times before as we live in the area. We were going to eat dinner but it was very busy and seemed to have some kind of special night on. We decided to stay for some drinks and a few bar snacks. My partner ordered a cocktail which I tried, and wanted my own (ping pong I think it’s called, with Lycee). English bartender James makes a lovely cocktail and was attentive despite the busy atmosphere.

Came in tonight with a few of my girls, had a great experience. The atmosphere was amazing and the service was outstanding. Great cocktails made by Kain, will defiantly recommend. See you soon Flying Moa

Had an awesome night of food and drinks, we made the most of their Saturday $10 burger deal. Our waitress Ellie was amazing, extremely tentative and up for some good banter
Haydn Parker
Best cocktails served and made by Kain, nailed it! Always a good atmosphere and the nicest servers. Thirsty Thursdays done right! Thank you!
ILoveToEat
I think the food here is delicious, prices are pretty standard to your usual “Gastropub”. The service is great and quick.. The staff are all friendly - Shout out to Ellie, give that girl a raise! The place is huge and the ambience inside is nice, lots of drink options and the bar menu is a winner!

Went to dinner here and had a great experience. The food was absolutely exceptional, average pricing but hella worth it. They have a deal on everyday which is definitely something to get on to. Found the place just a bit noisy with the acoustics and you really had to speak up to talk to your friends but really what do you expect at a pub. On top of that we had a great waiter named Olga very friendly and helpful, would recommend to anyone near and far.

Steak was good ! Staff was friendly . Will be coming back for sure. Also those potato skins ! They’re amazing . The cocktails and drinks are good too! Thanks

Great customer service, very friendly staff. They have good daily specials, each day is something different. They have a variety of different foods and drinks.<br/>It use to be more popular a while back but has settled down which is good if you just want a relaxing bar vibe in the evening rather than the heat of town. <br/>Nice bar set up, pool table and outdoor area

I love this place!! it's a tad far from where i live but its definitely worth the trip!. Their Monday all you can eat ribs for $20 (with a drink purchase) is amazing. You will leave here feeling super full and still strangely wanting more. They also have an amazing steak special on Wednesday on a stone grill. The only problem is that their normal lunch/dinner menu is a bit pricey, but if you take advantage of their specials, its definitely worth it!

Really nice family dinner experience. Went for Father's Day they were quite busy but service was still really good. Food was yum will go again.

My search for the best pork ribs in Auckland continues. Flying Moa's version was well seasoned and tender. This must be average, if not one of the better ones.<br/><br/>Their spicy squid was the highlight of our meal. Soft and flavourful, it was irresistible!<br/><br/>Staff were kind and friendly to our naughty toddler. Price wise, it was a tad expensive.
I_like_pickles
Good ambience and dining area. The service is friendly and quick. The meals stone grill and burger sizing is rather small for the price.<br/><br/>The burger was quite small for $22. It was an OK burger but there was so little of it. The stone grill was served with two sides but the sides were also miniscule. You had to order something else to full your belly.

I have to say- I love this place. Best beer battered fries in Auckland. Today I got a jam jar mojito and they now have paper straws which I am so happy about!! <br/>The vibe is ok but I come to stuff my face with fries lol <br/>Family friendly and staff are nice and friendly! <br/>Come here and see for yourself.<br/>Thanks Flying Moa.

Very spacious, great menu, was busy when we went but got the food in time. Love the idea of cooking your own meat on the hot rock. The salmon was cooked perfectly. Was quiet full and couldn’t have dessert. Definitely will Go back to try more food and have dessert.

**Cajun Fish**<br/>Just home from dinner The Flying Moa excited to try out the new menu!<br/>I generally don't eat a main, but I went for the Cajun Fish and Hubby hit the sliders.<br/>Fish was lovely.  Creamed corn was cold (nice, but cold) Mushrooms were so burnt I couldn't eat them and the burn had permeated the spinach, so I couldn't eat that either...<br/>I didn't make a fuss, but I did give feedback (if no one says anything they don't know right?)<br/>Sliders were bland, lacking flavour<br/>Service was nice.<br/>No discount or free beverage was offered.  Answer was "its a new menu".  Yup that is cool. I challenge the 'chef' to eat those mushrooms.

Attentive staff, fast service, good value for money especially on Mondays with their eat-all-you-can ribs for $25, child-friendly and good food. We tried their BBQ Pork Ribs, Cheesy Moa Dog, Chicken Tenders and Salt & Pepper Squid. Good dining experience for us.

We had our company drinks here the other night. the team were a pleasure to deal with and kept an eye out on our tab. an area was closed off just for us to enjoy our company.<br/>I ordered several if the platters with a variety of meat and fish. every one loved the food, I thought the ribs were excellent. I'm hoping our company make this a regular occurrence here. thanks to the staff fir a great night.

Had the Motor Moa platter for a Saturday afternoon lunch. Was so nice and hot, lots of great flavours and not a bad price for 2 People. Will be back

Went there today on Waitangi Day and had a great brunch. Service was great, very friendly and helpful staff. Love the place and nice breeze coming in the door. The food is nice, only issue is the seafood chowder which is too watery. I love the rump, very tender.
Richard Sharpe
Casual dinning. Very casual service. Most things on the menu aren’t very good. The chicken karaage is though. <br/>I’ve had lots of the smaller plates over the summer when I’ve been in. There really was nothing memorable other than the chicken and almost non existent service.

Came here for lunch with my husband and a friend. Our waitress was very helpful and friendly however with the restaurant being quiet empty I thought the food was a bit slow coming out. The menu had alot of yummy things on it which made it hard to choose from which I thought was great because I normally find that places don't have many appealing or original items that I really want to try. I wanted to try the duck spring rolls, and asked the waitress what they were like, she said they were deconstructed which I found really disapointing as I find deconstructed food, lazy and a complete waste of time. I instead chose the fish tacos, these were yummy and a great size for a small meal, they could have done with a bit more flavour to bring them up to another level. I thought the prices here were reasonable especially with the daily specials they have. My friend and husband really enjoyed their meals.

This bar/restaurant is nice place kinda enjoy a drink with some good friends. The only view you get is the main road but the place it self is done pretty well. Had a burger and steak sandwich, got to say steak sandwich was pretty good, the bread was kinda soggy but the taste was flavourful. Burger was juicy, but lacked of taste, just a plain burger to me. Customer service was pretty good, and overall just a nice casual hang out, and maybe abot on the expensive side. Would go again though.<br/><br/>Went again and had a very dissapointing experience, gave chunks of steak meat as we ordered a steak sandwich, and the steak was just to tough and like rubber. Asked us to cook it again just gave us excuses. Bad experience with just everuthing on that day never going back.
Neelam Chandra
Ambience here is a 5/5 but the service was close to none.<br/>The mojito and white sangria jug here weren't delish at all and tasted far too watered down :(<br/>Stonegrill however was good and I love the variety of chips you can get. Like seriously how amazing is it that you can choose between shoestring fries, kumara chips, beer battered etc.<br/>Overall my experience here was average.
A Foodie
I went there to catch up with my friends for Sunday brunch. This is the first time we went there because of entertainment voucher. Overall the service is good, but food is average. I’ve tried the soft shell fish tacos, the fish was a bit over cooked, and dry. My friend ordered a lamb stonegrill and it was good. A big piece of meat.
Mike Bull
i had dinner with my wife and 2 sons....we ordered our kai which consisted of a caesar salad pork ribs with coleslaw fish n chips and i had pork belly. caesar was cool however 3 meals were less than adequate. the coleslaw with the ribs was inedible an when we go to pay the person who was attending to us said that she notic3d the coleslaw was like that when she had it and what would you like me to do about it? <br/>the pork belly didnt have crispy skin and the fish n chips did not have mushy peas.<br/>the person who attended to our payment was less than accommadating and thats why i have written this.<br/>

Another mixed bag at the Flying Moa tonight, which is the story for previous visits too.<br/>I went for the "large" pork belly meal and at $31 had great expectations. Unfortunately it was lost on the plate and was mostly fat. Even the rest of the meal was tiny. Did not even start it and sent it back. Manager trying to justify the "popular" offering was just laughable and ensured I did not order an alternate. Other meals were fine and service was good, but there are better and more consistent options available locally.
Jessica Halim
Went here for after work drink. Area quite spacious. Good selection of drinks, food menu and few specials throughout the weekdays are good too (for example, on Wednesday 400gr angus only cost $20). <br/><br/>Our table ordered the Motor Moa and chips bowls. Good flavour of food. Definitely worth visiting. Sauce and mayo for chips were good. Ribs can be quite spicy for some people but I quite enjoyed the spice. <br/><br/>I will definitely come back to try the steak. Lots of table ordered this when we were there and they did looks very delicious.<br/><br/>Staff were quite attentive and friendly.

Just a disclaimer: I have never actually written a negative review in my life. So, this is my first and I'll keep it brief.<br/><br/>Came to The Flying Moa tonight, which was an extremely busy night (during the All Blacks and Springboks game). The restaurant is great. However, the blonde manager was extremely rude and condescending, so much so that my partner and I didn't stay to complete our order. The manager with the dark hair was awesome and tried to rectify the situation, but honestly my partner (10 years of experience as a chef in the States, Europe, and currently in Auckland) and I were so "traumatized", in lack of a better word, that we couldn't imagine staying one second longer). We left and offered to pay for the drinks that we didn't even stay to drink. I should mention, this was all because I ordered "the tap cider", which is the ONLY cider on the tap, btw, but it was very important for the manager to teach us that this wasn't just a "tap cider. It was in fact an APPLE CIDER..." and it just quickly became a thing. She practically lost it...started flipping through the menu/ pointing and reading to us that it says "apple cider" and not just a tap cider. I can't even describe the situation. I know it was a busy night, and probably her anger/ frustration didn't really have anything to do with us, but wow...just wow😱
Makidadrunk
Went here on a Monday for the all you can eat ribs but I had a fat steak mushroom chips n mushroom sauce I loved it took like 10 mins when we sat down to get our 1st dish served staff was good maybe cause my group of 10 friends were all big which means big eaters lol.Nice spot to chill n play some pool while having a drink
Bai.Yuanshan.90
So many mistakes on the bill you can only feel there is an attempt to rip off the customer. Very rude when you point out their mistakes. Please do not encourage these people by attending.
Riley Power
Food took well over an hour to arrive. It was very busy, but at no stage were we told how long it would take either when ordering or any time after. No staff came to see us while we were waiting and we weren't offered water etc. Sangria jug was 3/4 ice. Half the food was not up to scratch and not worth the price Also people who ordered after us got their food beforehand and service was not great.
Joanna Sear
Terrible service. Waited over an hour for food while others who arrived later than us got their food first. No apology and a rude waitress who seemed extremely irritated. We've been here twice in the last few months and similar experiences with rude staff/bad service. Would not return.
Chris Sixt
<br/>We wandered in last night for a meal at this place, for the food, I had all you can eat ribs (Monday night special) paired with a monteiths Radler, the ribs were cooked to perfection almost falling off the bone and the sauce was to die for. My Fiancee ate the eye fillet steak which she was able to cook to perfection on a hot stone which she was unsure of at first but delighted by towards the end of the meal. Unfortunately we were seated right next to an older couple and had to try not to listen to them for most of our meal. We asked to switch to a nearby table but were told it was reserved, by the end of the meal nobody had been seated there but we decided not to stay for desert and Fri is due to wanting a more private setting. All in all a great food experience but would have liked to be a bit further from the other diners. Service apart from this was spot on so well done the Flying Moa, we will be back at some stage.
Jess K
My partner took me here for my birthday and even though it was busy, the service and food was perfect!<br/>I would go again and the price is worth it.

Been here several times always had a good meal the ribs are delicious as is the stone grill, very good selection on the menu something to suit everyone, staff friendly and atmosphere is great, prices reasonable will definitely be back the loyalty club is also worth joining
Oriba San
Good atmosphere and service was friendly enough. Food however (motor moa platter), was awful and felt for $47 or so it was very disappointing. Probably wouldn't bother again.
S
Ambience 4.5 stars, service 3 stars, food 1. Do not bother with the food. The chicken tastes like fish and the platters are a rip off for how much they are and the crap food that comes with
Angela
Service was slow, we asked for water and it was brought over without glasses. The patties in the burgers were overcooked, eggs were dry. The calamaris were undercooked & rubbery. We told the waitress about it and she shrugged & said she only work here. Mussles were also undercooked. Crispy Porchetta (pork belly) came with rubbery cracklings and hard to chew. The sides were a mixture of hot mess. The skin was so tough that I gave up trying to cut with the knife that I was given, the effort was so tiring that I lost my appetite. Took forever for the plates to be cleared, no one offered dessert menu, we waited another 30 minutes before we got sick of waiting and asked for the menu. We thought the desserts would salvage the disastrous dinner, we were wrong. Oreo cheesecake was tasteless, the Oreo on top of the cheesecake was soggy. Chocolate brownie was average. Overall the next time we visit we would totally bypass food and just have our drinks.

I hadn't been to The Flying Moa for a while but had heard good things about their menu so decided to meet friends there for dinner.<br/>Their menu has so many options it's hard to decide, but you can definitely find something for everyone. The things we ordered were well made & reasonably priced. There were some hiccups though which has affected my rating although it's important to note that I will be happy to visit again. <br/>We had some mix ups with our order (potato fries instead of kumara fries, no beetroot on the burger although we'd ordered it & it was on the bill). Also service was very much hit & miss. Our waitress was lovely & knew the menu well, but we had to ask for water & glasses & then the bottle never got refilled. We also had to flag someone down for service anyway. Meals got brought out at different times. Had to wait & wait to pay too. <br/>All of these things are not the end of the world, and I'm not sure if they were short staffed, but these things make the difference when you eat out a lot & there are plenty of options around. They could really knock it out of the park if they really nailed that service.

We have visited the Flying Moa on a few occasions and have recently had a visit that had blown it out of the water. In previous visits, we have always found the service excellent, with the manager always being eager to chat to customers and even on busy nights when the rugby is on, they have been able to fit us in. On my most recent visit, everything about this restaurant was excellent and myself and my family left feeling very happy and full. The stone grill steaks are to die for! We found that especially recently, our steaks have been very tender - in fact, my dad claims more tender than any steak he's had before! A wide range of meals to choose from, particularly with a pub grub theme. Burgers are also a big recommend and each night they have a special on where certain meals are cheaper or different meals are available to what is on the menu. I can definitely recommend 400g steak night! The only problems we have ever had here are the noise - however we expected this when the restaurant sits just beside the bar where games are screened. We have also had stones for the stone grill before that have been just not quite hot enough, however, the steaks still cook just a little slower and when this was mentioned to the manager, he was interested to listen to our feedback and said that he would speak to the kitchen about it too. Strongly recommend the Flying Moa for a big fill for not so big prices!

Sorry I did not take any photos.<br/>I ordered fresh spring rolls, pork belly, bunless chicken burger.<br/>The first two dishes were perfect I could not fault them<br/>The third dish came with chips I would of like to have been offered for it to come with salad instead .... for $20 the bunless chicken burger with fries was overpriced....<br/>Service was 5/5
OldGoatsKnowBest
A clean, open-designed, sparkling space on multiple levels offering patrons a range of seating options. Friendly service with a predictable menu to suit all appetites. Primarily a bar. Accessed by a long staircase or an extended long ramp exposed to the rain. Our meals were rustled up well before we had finished our beer. A convenient pit stop if ever you are in the area.

Came in with a few friends for the all you can eat ribs. <br/>Great service from the floor staff but we were let down by the ribs. They still had far too much fat and sinue on them and were overcooked, boiled rather than smoked, and lacking flavour. The only thing that redeemed it was the sauce. Served with very basic salad out of the bag and simple potato fries.<br/>Good spacious environment with good staff but the food was definitely a let down for the price.<br/>Would probably only come here for a pub night and drinks next time, less of a place for dining.

Came here for something to eat while I was in the area yesterday lunchtime. Very quiet, less than 10 tables being occupied. This outlet has a lot of seating and a lot of carpark. Not the cheapest bar. Ordered fish and chips. The server very good asking whether I want grilled or battered. I chose grilled (pretend to be healthier). Still a lot of oil at the bottom of the plate, so not that healthy. Lol. Food came out quite quick and hot. That's good. Server behind bar quite friendly but no smile.

My little family had dinner here on Saturday and had sat outside where we had just caught the sunset (how romantic haha) anyways my kids picked burgers from the kiddies menu and I had the moa burger and my husband had the pork belly with a vermicelli salad and crackling. All our meals were so yummy except for my husbands crackling which was just a tad bit hard. But overall good service, good food and awesome surroundings.

Food was alright. Nothing special. Made a booking for 7 - seated at about 7:20. <br/>Stood by the counter to pay. Few people walked by and we just got ignored. Had to wait for about 6-8 minutes just to pay. Was kinda awkward. We were the only ones standing by the counter. May or may not come back.

Not exactly the easiest place to get to for CBD dwellers, but honestly it's worth a drive. <br/><br/>High ceilings, well lit and spacious, I would love for The Flying Moa to be my local pub if l lived around the area. <br/><br/>Surprisingly quiet for an all you can eat ribs on Monday, we received our ribs in around 5-8 minutes. They were piping hot, the sauce had a sweet taste, but it wasn't overwhelming.<br/><br/>The quality of the ribs varies, there were some really meaty ones and then some skinny ones, I liked how they didn't drench the ribs in sauce.<br/><br/>Showstopper: Really great spot, they have weekly specials so grab a few mates and head over to the Flying Moa.<br/><br/>Overall Grade: B+

The food is good. Steak night on a Wednesday is great value. However on this instance the service let us down. Firstly the waitress made things confusing and when we did go to pay and the tab was completely wrong the manager took a very long time to fix and was quite Happy to belittle the waitress in front of the customer. She seemed yo be oblivious to the time it was taking and wasn't interested in the slightest in myself telling her what we had to come to a quicker resolution.

What an amazing meal! Food came out quickly and hot cooked fresh. All food was tasty however my beans were a little unseasoned but had a nice crunch. My desert was really yummy however I was so full from my main I wasn't able to eat it all. The apples were evenly spiced with the right amount of ice cream to mix with it. Overall I will be back and would recommend you try it out.

Not happy with the meat cooked here. It was dry and difficult to chew. It seemed it was cooked for the 2nd time around but on the other side of it, I enjoyed the seafood chowder and unskinned potato wedges.

Would definitely recommend! The food was well priced and the drinks were a good size. We got the Moa burger and the chicken wrap and both were delicious. On a Saturday the burgers are only $15 too. Only down fall was that there were only three waitresses and it was quite busy.

Came here for brunch today. This place has a good vibe and nice decor on the celing. My friend and boyfriend ordered thier burger of the month and i stuck with the brunch menu and got the paleo breakfast. The paleo breakfast was okay. It was almost like a salad, i was expecting more protein than just cos lettuce. Maybe they should name is paleo salad. The other two really enjoyed thier burger, but did mention that the bun was a little dry.

Great atmosphere, friendly staff and a good Wednesday special. Had the sizzling plate and it was amazing. Would definitely go back and tell friends about it!

Very nice place with friendly staff. Was here before couple of times with my friends for drinks. Finally decided to have dinner. Special offer for Wednesday was steak on stonegrill for $19. The meat was very good quality and portion was pretty big. So I even could not finish it. It's very interesting way of serving steak when you have option to cook it by yourself. Dark beer on tap also very nice. Had wonderful time.

Came here for a quick lunch to escape work, ended up getting a burger and watching the NBA - I had the moa burger ($20.90) which had a bourbon sauce and came with fries on the side. To be honest the burger was good, especially the combination of flavour and meat but for the price I was expecting a little bit more - size wise and ingredients too. It was a simple burger which came out very quickly, but there were hardly any ingredients in it (1 piece of lettuce really??) served in between 2 small buns and the meat patty was tiny (but cooked well). My colleague got the spicy chicken burger which was slightly larger in size and tasted great (also $20.90). Next time I come, I'll probably just get drinks because they are a reasonable size for price or if they change their burgers - I was expecting a proper pub sized meal for that price. Great service though, and decor on point!

It's always the little things that make the difference - good and bad! <br/><br/>The atmosphere and service at The Flying Moa were both excellent tonight, and had I not been driving I would have been staying for a while. <br/><br/>The food was good and tasty too - overall the evening would have been a 4 or more. But for the little things... And I agree that this sounds somewhat pedantic, but when you're eating out there are always expectations. <br/><br/>IMHO... When serving a dish with a rosti, you shouldn't fill the plate with a sauce - it downgrades the rosti to just a soggy mash. And when doing a vegetable side, don't use only green vegetables - ANY pop of colour would have made the meal so much more appealing (visually).<br/><br/>It did all still taste good, but!

Nice place the staff are great the food is very well presented. Nice place to go for a treat! I would definitely visit this place again we look for to going back

I'm scoping out a place for my 21st and came here with my boyfriend to try out the menu as per a relatives recommendation. It was quiet and nice ambience and the server was nice if a little pushy. I was excited by the menu and ordered my usual favourite calamari while my boyfriend ordered the beef burger and we got garlic bread to share. <br/>I'm glad we didn't pick the tempting pricier items. The food came out suspiciously quick and dripping with oil. The bread was soft as if it was microwaved to melt garlic butter but it was nice even if it wasn't worth the money. The calamari was saturated to the point the breading was sliding off and it was rubbery. The chips tasted reheated and dry. The boyfriend said the burger was average. I didn't end up finishing anything other than the snifer cocktail which was rich and a real treat. Kudos to the bartender. <br/>One could argue the food is pub grub and supposed to be greasy and average but at the above average price charged I would strongly disagree. There are other establishments in the area that do excellent pub food for the same price and I don't think I'll be back even though I was pressured into getting the loyalty card.

Happened to go there on a Wednesday and chanced upon their deal of the day which was a massive steak meal on stone grill, it didn't look appetising as it was served raw on hot stone grill but it was perfect. It was tasty, tender and it was cooked to your liking. The stone grill stayed hot until i finished the meal. Great helping for $18! They also have a great variety of tap beer

I had not been to this lovely establishment for some time, coming back was great. The food was great. Being summer, salads are a must and I loved my halumi salad. A pimms drink was to die for on a hot day like yesterday. Going back for sure

went there 23/01/2016 for lunch,, the front staff were great,, as soon as we walked into the place we were greeted and shown to a table.. we were given a menu and offered drinks.. one thing that really stood out was, seeing all the staff pitch in and do whatever was needed to be done like, taking food out to tables, cleaning down the tables or serving drinks.. it was good to see as i have worked in so many restaurants and this does not happen. <br/><br/>i ordered the Ribs, it was a bit of a let down . i expected hot sticky ribs and the meat falls off the bones but what i got was, slightly chewy luke warm to cold ribs, i hate to make a fuss so i just ate them and said nothing, coleslaw came with the ribs,, i love coleslaw but i could not eat there's. it tasted bitter and lacked seasoning . putting coleslaw on a wooden board really put me off eating it.. <br/><br/>my sister ordered a burger. she said it was okay but disappointed they did not warm the bread buns. my mum had potato wedges with bacon and cheese,, she loved it,.,<br/><br/>so if flying moa had served hotter ribs and warmed the bread buns then i would of given a rating of 9 out of 10, instead i give them 7.5 out of 10

I love everything about this place. Such a cool and elegant place to dine in. Great choice of music, the interior design is beautiful and well presented, staff are really friendly and the food is delicious.<br/>I ordered the half rack big bird ribs for 28.50 which is a fair price. Huge portion and was not able to finish it. The potatoes were yum however it could've been better with like a sauce was a bit too dry and coleslaw tasted off. But I really enjoyed the ribs. Have to go back again :)

Had a good lunch experience. Service was good and food was good. Good value for money too. I tried the tuna steak and it was refreshing. Their calamari comes highly recommended too
Trish
Great food and good service considering there was only 2 wait staff working on a Sunday night. A bit of a wait to get dishes cleared but completely understandable. We did ask for one of the desserts not to have chocolate on as one of the guests had an intolerance for it but the ice cream still came with chocolate. But overall a nice place to spend a Sunday evening. Be warned, even the kids ribs were huge!!!😊

Great food! Loved the lamb and Steak. It was juicy and the onion rings are just darn good! Definitely going back. Friendly staff and nice ambiance.

Finally got around to trying this place out after years of driving past it. Glad we did! It settled the curiosity. The service is ok - I've had better but I've had worse. Wouldn't put me off the place. The environment of the restaurant is very kiwi, would be good to take a tourist here ☺️. The food is very similar to places such as Basalt, Celsius, Goode brothers and so on. The quality of the food is pretty decent and the menu has lots of dishes to pick from. Also they have a $6 dessert special on Tuesdays which sweetens the deal 😉 I'd definitely come back, just not in a hurry

Me and my partner came here on a busy Saturday night this weekend and had the loveliest experience. I've been here a few times and always liked it but it was my partners first time and it's safe to say we'll come back in the future. <br/><br/>There were 3 - 5 birthdays/functions happening at this time but we still got our drinks and food all in good time. We were so surprised as they were quite busy! The food was so yummy. We ordered a 400g steak on a stone grill (Moa Challenge) and the pasta. Both meals were delicious. The meat they served was really beautiful pieces and tasted fresh. <br/><br/>The pricing is also great. We ordered the Moa challenge, pasta, a beer and two cokes. Came up to around $77. Not bad at all for a great night!<br/><br/>The customer service here from EVERYONE was also unbelievable. I love good customer service. It makes me want to return again :)<br/><br/>No complaints whatsoever with this place.

Came here for dinner one night as was pleasantly surprised. Serving sizes are VERY generous, and when partnered up with their weekday specials, it's an unbelievable bargain. The calamari I ordered was tender and well seasoned, too many places do this wrong but Flying Moa nailed it. The half rack of ribs my partner ordered was tender and the end bits were charred and crunchy as good ribs should be. Pub food isn't usually my type of cuisine but Flying Moa was quite enjoyable.

"All this could be overlooked, were it not for the the staff. I’m not sure if they’re just bored, or they genuinely think because they’re the main bar in the area they can be openly contemptuous"
Karen
I have returned here many times, I can't go past the ribs and stonegrill specials. They also have other daily specials that are worth checking out. <br/><br/>Really great service, speedy and friendly. A nice outdoor dining area when weather is good. <br/><br/>Nice and simple, I would definitely recommend!

Been to this establishment couple times before and always left feeling disappointed. The service was sporadic and sometimes just plain bad. However today's visit was the complete opposite. We ordered lunch and it was delicious. I had the Moroccan lamb salad- the lamb was a tab overcooked but nicely spiced. My companions decided to share several entrees. The pork belly was creamy and crunchy, the salt&pepper calamari was simply delicious and the salmon bruschetta was tasty. The service was FANTASTIC, the main server was charming, witty and helpful. I've definitely changed my mind about the Flying Moa. Might even go back for their "all you can eat rib" night.
LeFoodie
Live down the road so this place is always on my mind. Last time I went and found out they had changed the menu. Now there's nothing I like on the menu. The spicy chk wings R gone. The kids menu is bad. Too noisy to take kids or if u want a quiet dinner.

First time to the Flying Moa. The Big Bird Ribs (a full rack of slow roasted pork ribs) with potato skins & coleslaw were quite a big dish. (A half rack was also available.) OK for ribs; potato skins were crispy, but coleslaw was bland & looked unappetizing - that at KFC might even be better, sorry to say that. Beer battered tarakihi with green salad & fries was rather oily, but OK.   (Food - 3.5/5; Service - 2.5/5; Ambience - 3/5)

Came here for drinks a couple of times and really wanted to try the food. We asked for a table at 6pm on a weeknight and nearly didn't get one, this place is popular!<br/><br/>Our orders were taken quickly and the food arrived within 15 minutes, excellent service. Both the calamari and steak dishes were good and offered excellent value. Plating calamari on a board can be problematic because it rolls off.<br/><br/>Would definitely return.

Myself and a few friends went here for lunch on Saturday and we found the service to be quite poor. The lady behind the counter was rude and had a bad attitude. I got the entree gnocchi which consisted of about 10 pieces of gnocchi... yes it was an entree size but for $18 I expected a bit more. The beer and the cider both tasted watery. Also, I ordered a cocktail and did not receive it so had to go and ask for it about half an hour later. Won't be back again.

Heard a lot of good things about The Flying Moa and after having dinner there tonight I was pleasantly surprised! The service was a highlight and the best I have had in a long time. The staff were friendly, attentive and easy going. There is a good range of dishes on the menu and although at first glance they look a bit pricey! This is mainly the meat dishes due to good quality cuts.<br/><br/>I ordered the Beer battered fish (small) served with fries and salad - $18.90 and my friend got the Moa Steak special - $18. My dish was just the right size and a decent portion of each component. My friend was very happy with her steak and was surprised by the size of the protein - great value for money! It was nice to know you could change out the side of fries to potato mash or vegetables too. We also got the Pimms cup (counterfeit cocktail), I was lucky enough to receive a free one as they had made a extra one by mistake (- thanks guys!)<br/><br/>Majority of the seating inside was reserved as it was pretty busy for a Wednesday night! So we were seated outside, which was pleasant and would be even more perfect for hot summer days! Had a great meal and overall experience here so will definitely be back for sure.

Came here one a Monday night. Service was good. The waitress that served us was super friendly and patient. She mentioned it was an "all you can eat" ribs on a Monday night for $20. <br/><br/>Ordered a chicken burger and my friend ordered a Moa scotch. Honestly. I didn't think the food was as amazing as everybody has been saying. Maybe we ordered the "wrong" kinda meals. But my chicken burger was quite small and the chicken itself was dry. Just fell apart trying to cut into it. The chips that it came with were nice though. <br/><br/>My friends scotch fillet was real tough and dry. The truffle sauce was amazing though. And I liked the house cut fries it came with too. <br/><br/>Would probably come back next time with my partner and see if there's improvement and he can try out the all you can eat ribs. Ha!<br/>

Ribs ribs and more ribs. Just go for that. Monday is ribs special. It's a great location with plenty of parking. Nice staff. They also have a fantastic atmosphere

Had heard great things about this place prior to visiting but left super disappointed. My friends and I were treated very poorly by who I am assuming (judging by his attire) was the manager. While ordering our drinks he had an impatient and irritated demeanour, and when my friend asked for his recommendation for a type of drink, he rudely replied with "I'm sure you can decide for yourself, you're not 5." I used to work in hospitality, I understand how hard it can be. But this sort of treatment is unacceptable. This "manager" has certainly put us off from ever going back.

Came in around 1100 but the kitchen didn't open until 1130. We were able to look through the menu and order both food and drinks when we were ready. As expected, it wasn't busy so we were able to order when we were ready. We were informed that the meals wouldn't be prepared until the kitchen was ready.<br/><br/>I was really disappointed with the hot white chocolate and coconut drink. The idea was interesting with a piece of chocolate on a stick which you can pour hot milk into. The white chocolate was quite bland and the coconut was desiccated so you didn't get much coconut flavour and the coconut bits weren't very nice to drink.<br/><br/>The buffalo cauliflower was alright, nice crispiness but I just found the hot sauce to be on the sour side. The zoodle salad was very nice. Quite good flavours and nice bits of kumara and nuts to give more flavours and textures.<br/><br/>Quite a nice and large pub in the area. Food is quite nice and the service was also quite good.

My partner and I go to The Flying Moa every couple of weeks and are never disappointed. The "Rydon moa" platter is one of our favourites, with tandoori chicken skewers, calamari, beef croquettes, salmon croquettes, prawn twisters and miniature hotdogs. The ceaser salad is fresh and crunchy, and my partner loves the stone grill steak! Definitely a favourite of ours!
Mat
Dined here a couple of times before and can say the food is good. This place is super packed around 6:30pm and onwards so if you don't like crowded pubs I would suggest avoiding this place! I really enjoy the desserts here too, I think the sundae is my favourite :) drinks are good too.

One of the best steaks I have ever had!!! On Wednesdays (the steak specials night), it would be the cheapest steak I've ever found!!<br/><br/>Came here last Wednesday for a friend's birthday gathering. Our table was a bit crowded as we had so many people. It was a bit difficult to sit comfortable due to that, but when the steak arrived, I didn't have a care in the world!<br/><br/>To go with my steak, there were fries on the side with some very good aoili (also did not run out!) and a cute little drink from the $8 jam jar menu.<br/><br/>Can't stop thinking about this steak, must go back ASAP!<br/><br/>Pictures include some other people's dishes which they also enjoyed :)

I wish I could give this place a good review as it Used to be one of my favourite places to go but the last couple times I've been here it has really disappointed. The menu has changed and the food is just average and bland now. Nothing special. I feel like the portions have gone down too. We got the stone grill and ordered house cut fries with it and literally got like 5 fries haha.... Their garlic mash used to be amazing but they took that off the menu :( Kind of disappointing really.
Fare Henry
Absolutely loved this place! The environment and atmosphere was private and enjoyable. The food was exceptional! I tried the beef ribs and my partner had the sirloin steak served on stone/ hot plate! We both enjoyed every bit. Presentation was great and service was good. It is a pricey place to dine but it was worth every dollar. Will definitely revisit!

If you're looking for somewhere to watch the footy, get some good food, some live music. Then this is the place to be. Great friendly service, but process of people getting in and out needs to be worked on. Needs faster service when busy
Kishore Mitra
This is your standard pub that has some decent grub on offer. My pick from the menu will be the Steak. Service isn't stellar but okay. The quality overall has definitely gone down compared to a year ago. Okay/average overall. Food 3/5, Service 3/5, Portions 3/5, Price 3.5/5
Kelly
The service has improved slightly since I last dined here, I feel as though they should really have someone at the door to take us to our seats so our presence is known in the restaurant. We always seem to find out way to an empty seat and wait for someone to notice us or just grab a menu off a staff member.<br/> However when the staff do take our order they are very lovely to deal with.<br/><br/> Food has unfortunately gotten worse over the times I've dined here. I've come here regularly for my steak fix, but over the the recent visits things have definitely changed. The menu has changed significantly which is sad to see 😔<br/> Tonight we got a seafood chowder to share (a very shallow bowl, more of a plate) and a stone grill eye fillet with lemon gnocchi and fries for me and the Sunday Roast - Chicken with gravy and roasted potatoes.<br/> The chowder was good, although had a lot of vegetable to actual seafood. Stone grill, I love stone grill because I can control the meat hehe, but my fries tasted stale and the gnocchi was very doughy and I didn't end up eating much of my sides. <br/>The chicken was very very dry but the gravy and potatoes were delicious!<br/><br/> It wasn't a very busy night, four other tables where occupied in the restaurant area and the bar side was pretty much the same. <br/> However it is a nicely decorated restaurant, clean and tidy. <br/><br/> Unfortunately this is one too many visits that Flying Moa has let me down 😔<br/> I won't be back for a while, but I'll be back for the $20 all you can eat ribs! Still need to challenge a few of my friends haha
Oliver Samin
You can tell as soon as you walk through the door that something has changed...I have been to Flying Moa several times with family and friends and have enjoyed the food and the place..not this time, though. There was a person playing and singing to the left side of the bar, the music wasn't bad but just a bit too loud. The menu has changed and the food just taste bland and too oily for my liking. The garlic bread was soaked in butter and wasn't nice. The roast chicken was underdone and the skin was chewy. Overall, a big letdown. Just had to leave the place, food half-eaten😛
Purple Pancakes
Went there on a Monday night when they were doing ribs night. Ordered a turf mixed with lemon gnocchi and chips as side but they ran out of gnocchi, this is at 6:40pm, dinner time has barely started, perhaps next time waiting staff should tell customers what they're out of when they're handing out menus. Later I get told they were out of prawns also (part of my main) so they asked if I wanted extra salmon or extra market fish. I said extra salmon as I do not care for the fish. Meal came and guess what, same amount of salmon (I know how much they usually give out as I've seen my friends' photos whom have visited the flying moa) , with extra market fish, even though I did not ask for extra fish. When asked, the waitress simply tells me that "they did give you extra salmon" in a rush before walking away. Food was average at last, I've been to much better stone grill restaurants with 10x better service, only gimmick is the all you can eat ribs, which I did not care for either. Completely and utterly disappointed with my meal there as the service was not sincere plus the lack of food supply. Will not ever go back again.
Erin Hall
I would rate the food as your standard pub grub. The pub has a nice atmosphere and is is a really nice place to have a drink, but I wouldn't plan to eat here again when there's a few good places so close by.

Went with group of friends on a Saturday night. The food was alright, nothing special except for the potato skin and home cut fries which are the highlights of the night. We were a big group so got to try various dishes.<br/>1. Motor Moa platters to share: It was good starter to share. A good mix of different things which would worth for a try. <br/>2. Moa Scotch: The scotch was very chewy and hard to swallow. Probably due to medium cooked. The mushroom sauce was a bit too sweet. But the house cut fries was very crispy and well fried.<br/>3. The half roasted chicken: The taste was plain but the texture was pretty well cooked. And the beer battered fries were similar to the house cut fries, very crispy. <br/>4. The 1/2 big bird ribs: This was what I ordered. Some parts of the ribs is nice but most of the other parts were dry and burnt. The potato skin was good tho. <br/><br/>The mains were in decent portions, very good for ppl looking for big eats. We hardly finish all the mains. <br/>Overall the taste was alright, nothing in particular that would urge me to go for another recent visit. I think the service had made things down a bit.<br/>The service was very average. Except for filling our water bottles regularly they hardly approached us and I didn't feel much of a service.

Been here a few times for beers and bowl of fries- would never come here as a point to eat but for drinks totally nice place to catch up with the crew

My meal tonight at the flying moa was rather enjoyable. Food didn't take long to come out despite being completely packed. The stonegrill was delicious as was the chicken and sweet corn risotto. Side note: if you love mash, you have to try the garlic mash here, it's heaven!! <br/><br/>The baked cheesecake was perfect. Not too dry and the gooseberry compote complimented it wonderfully. The strawberry pannacotta was so so. Lemon tart jar- yum. <br/><br/>Wine list is good as are the cocktails. Great vibe and great for a solid meal.

YOU WILL NEVER BELIEVE WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO ME AT THE FLYING MOA!!! <br/><br/>I dined at Flying Moa 3 weeks ago, I was told to give my credit card to put a tap on our table. At the end of the night, I have settled the bill with my eftpost and I totally forgot about my credit card (and no one has given it to me either). <br/>Three weeks later, I was checking my credit card balance and I noticed that some money has been taken from it. Apparently, Flying Moa have been taking money from my credit card… As soon as I noticed that, I called my friend, who is a manager at a restaurant as well, and asked for help. We then rushed to Flying Moa to find out what has happened. <br/><br/>First, we met the manager of the restaurant, his name was Bruno, and asked for an explanation. In return, we were told that we were dining in the restaurant last night and left without paying! We tried to be polite, and told him that we can provide evidence that we were at work at time, and asked to check the security cameras! He went and got us our credit card, threw it on the table and told us to .... ...<br/>Can you imagine how shocking was that? <br/><br/>Then, we went to speak with the owner of the restaurant and after 30 mins of discussion , she was “kind enough” to go and check the book with the credit card details. A while later, she eventually gave us our money back! <br/><br/>My friend, who has an experience of restaurant management for over five years, <br/> was devastated , so she went back to Bruno and told him that he should be nicer to the customers of the restaurant. And hear this….after he started shouting and swearing at her, she could not stand it anymore and pushed a tray at him (which is understandable given the situation). In return, he threw a glass of coke with ice at her in front of the whole restaurant!! <br/><br/>She left crying and humiliated… Like it was not enough that they were practically stealing money form my account!<br/> Later on, we found out that some people had the same situation when money were taken from their account. We have lodged a complain to police . <br/>This place should not be open to public , or if you decide to give it a try after my experience don’t ever give them your credit card! <br/>

Nothing special here. OK I know it's a pub but the food can be better. <br/>Although there are some nice options in the menu I did not get very excited with the salad the steak sandwich and the prawn skewer.<br/>Prices just ok. Nice outdoor area. Focus on the food improvement and things would be better.

Want steak badly so hubby suggested going to Flying Moa.  They offer the steak deal on every Wednesday which we can get a 400g rump steak with fries at only NZD17!! This is my first stone-grill experience, it was so fun and the steak is so tasty (Hubby said, whether the steak is tasty or not, it depends on how you cook it as they just simply give you a raw steak). As the size of the steak is so big (400g), so we just ordered buffalo wings for share.  It tasted good as well =)<br/>The atmosphere there was so relaxing and the waitress are so nice =) i will come back again when i want steak! (Given it's Wednesday ;P)

A pretty consistent choice in Stonefields - there's not too many ways to stuff up beer and pub grub !  <br/><br/>The mains are mostly a good size (the pork belly is a bit on the small side, but very rich, so you probably couldn't eat any more anyway!).  There's a wide range of salads and "healthier" options if steak, burgers, or anything with chips doesn't appeal.  Desserts are also pretty good, and half-price on Tuesday nights.<br/><br/>They have a great loyalty schem and rounds of specials on their Facebook page, and very friendly staff if you can get their attention across the bar.

Two friends and I went to The Flying Moa last night for dinner. The location is great, with plenty of parking, and it was easy to find. Inside, it was very busy, a sign that the food is very good - which is was. Service was brilliant, and they catered to my vegan friend who needed her salad to be amended to meet her culinary requirements. I ordered a Moa Burger (with the chips replaced with salad), my vegan friend got the Moa Salad, and my other friend bought the Schnitzel. All of us were very pleased with our meals, which were very filling. I also had a glass of riesling, which they kindly allowed me to sample before ordering, and my friends had some tasty ice tea. The menu is up around the $25-$35 range, unless of course you're taking advantage of one of The Flying Moa's various specials. The wine was $10 a glass. The atmosphere was great, clean, if a little noisy - as is to be expected at a bustling pub. The toilets were also very sanitary. I would go again. Thanks for the great dinner, The Flying Moa!

Husband and I came here for dinner on a Saturday night (30th Aug) We had a booking for 6pm. When we arrived, we were surprised to see that the dining area was crammed full of tables, most with families with young children. We could understand the families, given our early hour booking, however, it was extremely noisy and crowded, and all the tables seemed to be placed very close to eachother and in odd positions which made it difficult to hear eachother. We had hoped for a nice, quiet dinner together, but it wasn't to be. It seemed as though they had tried to cram as many tables as possible in a small dining area, the waiting staff also had trouble just getting in and out with orders, as they literally had to squeeze through the gaps! not very practical! We sat for around 10-15 minutes before we were served, and that was only because hubby caught the eye of a wait staff member who decided to come over and see if we had been served yet. On a positive note, our meals arrived only after 5 minutes of having our order being taken which was great-the quality of food wasn't. I ordered the falafel salad which I could tell was not freshly made, and the falafels were a little bit dry-however, they were still tasty. I also had some strange flowers nestled among my salad which I left to one side..seemed very odd..was not mentioned on the menu. Hubby had the chicken schnitzel which tasted awful and very artificial. We agreed that the meals weren't the best we'd had-and while they weren't expensive, we did expect to at least get fresh and tasty meals. I honestly was very disappointed with Flying Moa on this night, and would not go back. As a side note-a couple who came in after us were left waiting at their table for over 20 minutes and no one came to take their order-they mentioned they usually get very good service at Moa, but on this night, it didn't happen. They walked out of the restuarant. I don't usually like to give any sort of bad review-but in this case I feel it's justified as we really were disappointed, especially as we were hoping for a nice quiet dinner together. Maybe it was an off night, but in my opinion, this shouldn't ever happen.

Went there for lunch today and had to come home and make something to eat. Service was slow as reported in an earlier review. My husband had a BLAT which was very ordinary and the bread was stale. I had the marinated chicken which was raw in the middle on a stone grill. I had nearly eaten it when I spotted this. Apparently that is the idea that you cook it yourself. But really raw chicken on your plate with no change of utensils or plate!!! We won't be dining there again.

Always enjoy going to The Flying Moa but just one suggestion - when trying to have an family meal at a pretty early time (i.e. 5pm-6.30pm) the music always seems to be super loud and it's very hard to have a conversation. There aren't a lot of family restaurants around in St Johns so just a thought to maybe turn it down slightly. This is a time when the pub isn't that busy as well so it shouldn't effect others too much. Just saying.... :)

Fabulous, I have never been able to walk away from a restaurant without having one issue or another to mention/think about it..until now.<br/>Initially, there was a error in my request for outside sitting but they solved it so quickly its not even worth mentioning.<br/>The service was very smart, but yet no in your face at all.<br/>The food..Oh the food.. I've got goosebumps just recalling the sensations that filled the senses that night.<br/>OUTSTANDING.. The stone grill "two worlds" sent me on a glorious journey, my fellow diners had a twice baked pork belly, which also was fantastic beyond words.<br/>Just everything was so so good, even considering it was a Friday night, during work do season and the place was packed.

What an awesome eatery! Service was excellent and prompt. I didn't have a booking but the staff fit us in anyway even though they were very busy. Food was delicious and good sized portions for the money. The Jam jar cocktails are divine. Had a fabulous time, next time I'm in Auckland I will be going back. Atmosphere was very friendly. I think if I lived near by it would be my local.

Went there yesterday for the Ribs night - all you can eat for $20<br/><br/>Tasty food - nice staff - overall brilliant

I have to say that myself and my partner have NEVER had a bad experience at the Flying Moa. The service is great, the wait time is either very quick or if it is busy the waitresses ensure us that the meals wont be far away.<br/><br/>Also once we have received our meals they always make sure that everything is ok and even check if we need another drink. <br/><br/>I love the food there and it is our local and would recommend to all.<br/><br/>The only thing i would like to ask is that could you create a platter without seafood on it as every time we order the Northen Moa we have to ask without any seafood but the chef and waiter behind bar always ensures that we can add extras to the platter instead of the sea food but it would be good if you could create one without the sea food on it.<br/><br/>Overall great experience always. Keep it up!!!

Moa Burger looks great, however, it's the worst burger I've had in my life. The patty was made out of some type of meatloaf when the menu said that it was a 100% beef patty. It was absolutely disgusting. The reason the Moa got 2 stars is that our waitress was fantastic. She was extremely busy but still managed to do a great job i.e. attentive, offered suggestions, prompt drink service etc.

My mother and I thought we would go to the Flying Moa for dinner together as our previous experiences have been enjoyable, as for this time it was the complete opposite. We both ordered the small fish and chips (battered), it was tiny for $17.50, the fish was dark brown almost black and extremely dry and chewy, it was a struggle to swallow. Very disappointed with our meals and the ''customer service'' from one of the girls. I'm not one to complain and I am not a fussy eater but this was appalling.

Went there on Sat night to watch the rugby, was packed!!! Got a table in the dining area and the three of us were very happy with the service the 2 girls looking after that area gave us. <br/>The food took a while but that was to be expected with it being so busy, but the girls let us know that it would be a little longer than normal and made sure we always had a drink if we wanted one. When it did arrive the food was really good :) Great cocktails in jam jars!!! super yummy<br/><br/>The food, atmosphere and great service by the smiling ladies in the dining area all mean I will definitely be going back there!! Just a bit earlier maybe if the rugby is on :)

Ok so it was our first time at the Flying Moa, the service wasn't great we were standing at the top counter for at least 30min before we were directed to a table. On sitting, not once did a waitress come to see if we were ready to order so instead I went up to the bar requested some drinks and told the waitress that we were ready to order if she doesnt mind serving us please.<br/><br/>There after we enjoyed our meals and would return again on the acception that their services improoves. Some people should serve with a smile :) that will go along way.

This place is pumping on a Thursday night! I went with a group of girlfriends for dinner two Thursdays ago which went down very well with the $7 cocktails. Awesome place to spend the evening in good company, with friendly staff who made us feel welcome right through the moment we come through the door. Will be back soon

Wednesday is steak night and great value! Nice friendly staff on the night we went, although it was very busy and loud. Would go again for this special deal. A bit overpriced for 'pub' food though.

Went there to celebrate a birthday, the service was quite average, none of the staff were that friendly, no one came to check on our meals or asked us if we needed/wanted anything else.<br/><br/>The food was not that great, and I've had better pub food for the same price. The ribs were alright, I've definitely had better at other restaurants though. The NYC Cheesecake was atrocious. The crust was salty and so was the cake, it's like they used salted butter in the crust and added salt to the cake to try and bring out some flavor. The serving of the cheesecake was so small for $11. It has to be the worst dessert, so I would not ever recommend it. <br/><br/>I don't think I'll go back, or recommend this place as I know of better places where the food is far superior in presentation and taste.

Have been there twice and will never return, glad we had vouchers as certainly would not pay for the crap service we received both times, the food was ok a little over priced especially for the steak sandwich, visited on a Sat for lunch and 1 waitress (poor girl) felt sorry for her - drinks took about 15 mins and then they were wrong, we received the garlic bread with the mains and she says "oh sorry was the bread ment to have come first"

YUM YUM YUM. THe steak deal on wednesdays is amazing value and I love a good hot plate! The ribs were very tasty and the meat just fell off the bone. Was a little diappointed by how many ribs you get though as once you go past the bone there isnt that much meat. Sharing was a great idea though my friend and i had half of each meal and were very satisfied by the end of the night!

We ate lunch at The Flying Moa and were dismayed to find the Salsa accompanying one of the meals was fermented (i.e. it was rotten). We complained and the wait staff checked with the kitchen who confirmed it was not supposed to be like that and they would make a fresh batch (too late for our meal). Nevertheless they charged us full price for the meal. When pressed they gave us a voucher for a "free" beer if we return - which I certainly won't be. The salads were all tired and I would be very worried that their food handling procedures are safe.

Second visit here... Just as good as the first, great food, priced more than reasonably.<br/>We were in a group of 8, on a Friday night. Great atmosphere.<br/>Noisy on a Friday night which does not at all bother me, but may others.<br/>Id say a great place for after works drinks also - especially during cocktail happy hour!<br/><br/><br/>----- 16 Aug, 2010 -----<br/><br/>Great dinner we had here.<br/>Service was fab - food was fab and well priced.<br/>Huge meals for the price.<br/>Atmosphere was awesome - we went on a thursday, and there was a band on.<br/>We will be back

Visited for lunch. A nice looking pub with a menu that caters well for pub grub (the usual deep fried items) or a nice lunch with clients (salads, steak, stonegrill etc.). I'd recommend the Flying Moa for its convenient location &amp; parking, good service, nice interior. The food is OK. We'll be back.

Went there for the first time last night and was WELL IMPRESSED. The place is very modern, tidy and clean and the menu is massive with heaps of really good sounding meals to choose from and the staff were absolutely superb. highly recomended and I am already thinking about going back for lunch next week.

Had lunch there with my wife and took advantage of the Entertainment Book's complimentary main... Nice place with good food served promptly. Another of my favourites... PINTS!! Only downside is it's proximity to the road.

For a meaty fix, this pub is a great option especially for a chillaxed night out. My friends and I came here for dinner a few times now and really loved their weekly unlimited ribs deal (Mondays) and the $17.5 steak nights (Wednesdays). The ribs are saucy and tender served with a side of coleslaw and fried potatoes. It's so popular that sometimes they run out so I'd advice going there early. The steak is served rare to you on a sizzling stone plate along with chunky chips, the quality was great and the portion satisfying. It would have been good to have the option of swapping the chips for some vege which I might try asking next time. On the topic of veggies, we also ordered the warm salad (interesting name) with grilled chicken - it was a bit average and lacked the fresh taste you'd expect although maybe this is to do with the 'warm' concept.<br/>All in all, this is a great place for food and drinks with a buzzy atmosphere and happy, friendly staff.

After my visit here, I'd take a flying XXXX before I headed back to the Flying Moa! I was expecting something pretty good from this Mt Wellington outpost of the New Zealand Pub Co. After all, their fellow pub the Zookeeper's Son is pretty much my local in Royal Oak. But I was sadly disappointed.<br/><br/>The set up is great - nice decor, outdoor tables on busy Lunn Ave & the big spaces that Friday lunchtime workmates & weekend brunching families alike can enjoy. The staff all seemed friendly & chatty enough. But this is a foodie website, and the food is what let them down.<br/><br/>For starters, the menu seemed pretty winter-y. Lots of steak, chips, mash & big hearty-sounding meals dominated. On a sunny Friday lunchtime, this definitely wasn't our style. Secondly, my vegetarian friend struggled to find anything that appealed. She eats seafood, and some of the sizzling stone plate options such as the Seafood Skewers sounded OK, but putting them in the "entree" section hints at small portions. She opted for the fish & chips in the end, which was nice, but at over $17 definitely not a cheap option.<br/><br/>My choice of a pulled pork sandwich served with slaw & pickles sounded good on paper. The friendly waitress asked if I'd like a side of fries or something else with it. Here's the part where I sound cheap. It was a Friday lunch out of the office. Normally I'd grab something from a food court for around $10, but we'd decided to enjoy the ambience here so I was happy to spend a bit more. With drinks already ordered, I didn't think an additional $6+ was warranted for fries when my sandwich was already $14.50. Oh, how I wish I'd ordered the fries now!!!<br/><br/>When the food arrived, the fish & chips looked good; a relatively small lunch size platter with a nice garden salad on the side. A nicely balanced meal. My dish, however, neither looked good nor was well balanced! I had a tiny triangle of foccaccia bread deserted in the middle of a full-sized plate, looking very lonely. I think I must have stared at the plate looking a bit shocked for a few seconds. What was inside the sandwich was tasty enough, but the meagre portion was definitely not worth the price. And I was still hungry afterwards. I don't remember ever having to order extra sides at the Zookeeper's Son, and I've certainly never been left hungry from their pub-sized portions. Maybe Mt Wellingtonians have smaller appetites and larger wallets! <br/><br/>All up, lunch cost me around $20, and I probably would have been more satisfied with a $3 McDonalds Combo. Despite being the closest pub to work, I definitely won't be returning here in a hurry. What a disappointment.<br/><br/>If you liked this review, check out more like it at: http://kiwifoodwonders.com
