Review The Tandoor - Auckland Central

Deepak Mohanraju
It was one of those days where you plan on eating lunch at a place with your partner, but end up eating completely elsewhere and a different cuisine. Most often you end up regretting it - but not on this occasion. We were totally blown away for more than one reason - courteous staff, value for money and most importantly tasty food. Ordered a chicken tikka masala(hot) lunch special and an Aloo paratha - cost 26.50 NZD, Taste - finger licking good !! 😊. Highly recommend this place. Will definitely go back for more.

I love this place every time. The food is delicious. I’m a student and rarely get to visit Auckland. I need to make a habit of coming here any time I’m visiting my family. My only tip is to make sure you get a vege samosa with whatever you order. If you eat in, the sauce it comes with is delicious.

So good! On a trip back to NZ and this was some of the best food I’ve had here. Amazing flavors and texture. Lamb rogen josh was superb. Excellent service.

I loved the chicken briyani. Am already thinking when can I go back for another briyani (: It’s a small shop with one staff handling front of house, so patience is required but the wait only makes the food tastes even better!

I passed by and ordered the butter naan. It was very good. I have had naan from a few other places but this is now my favorite!!!

I ordered the Dehli Style butter chicken, as I always want to have hot and spicy food. Not bad Naan is good Combo with drink not even $20, I guess it's a good deal in the city centre

I'm a Punjabi and know my curries well. I was on a one-night business trip from Brisbane to Auckland and thought of trying this joint near my hotel. I ordered Mogewala Kukkar, the chef's speciality. Now, this is not a usual dish to be found in the traditional fare of curries but sounded like chef's experiment and allusion to their hometown Moga. I must admit that this curry dish was very quirky and lip-smackingly delicious, possibly the finest I've had in a long time. It had a really interesting blend of different styles of masalas. The chicken was perfectly marinated and went along really well with naan. Try it with an Indian Medium spice level.

Delicious food at a good price. Great service. Seating area is a bit cramped.

I had their Mutton Kasa Combo(with Naan and a soft drink). It's $14.90. Btw, I didn't expect that came with rice as well. lol The curry hid lots of meat! It takes a while for the spice to kick in. If you're not seeing someone after, you'd better choose their garlic Naan. I love it.

Food is served hot. Best garlic naan we’ve tasted so far. The serving is very generous. Location is not too noisy and very near parking spots in the CBD.
Prabal P
Pretty good North Indian food. The lassi was super thick. Probably a little too thick but that's not a big deal. The service was satisfactory and the food was good so 5 stars indeed.

Confirmed this place is great, aside from I didn’t need an Indian to bring me here, by the delicious food. Amazing! And the natural Indian hot milk tea with masala is so delicious!
Nazia Jabeen
Delicious food..fair price and good portion..loved the tea after dinner.

I almost let the few low reviews put me off this place. Glad my hungry fiancé dragged me in anyway. Best curries! I loved the butter chicken (on both occasions), my other half enjoyed the tikka masala and their own Indian curry. Fairly priced, great location and they use chicken breast meat in their curry (uncommon find with my past experience) highly recommend 😋

Yes, finally got chance to have mixed paratha over here. Just love it. I can say if you are paratha lover this is heaven in NZ. It was 8 NZD a paratha served with mixed achar & cheese. Reasonable price and size.

100% best indian food I've had in the city. The chickpea vegetarian meal I had was fantastic. I will definitely be back and will recommend it to everybody I know as the place to go.

This was the best butter chicken ever! I am never going to eat any other Indian food. I have tried all mnue and everything was delicious. People who work there are so absolutely beautiful and kind. Go there and have the best food experience ever!

The staff are so kind and accommodating, and the food is absolutely incredible! Love all of the vegetarian options but the Kadai Paneer is by far my favorite. Make sure to get their amazing garlic naan!

The two dudes serving were so beautiful!! Made our first night in New Zealand that much easier + has 2 vegan options which is amazing. Brilliant place !!!!!!

Every time I feel like some Indian food, I just head over to Tandoor. And since they opened, that's basically every day. Great guys, amazing food and decent prices. Thanks

Amazing customer service delicious quick food must try

Honestly, the Delhi butter chicken & chicken tikka was so BLAND. No flavor and only 5 tiny pieces of chicken. The rice was waaaay overcooked & dry. Not worth a quick bite here. Very disappointed with the quality.
Harsimran Oberoi
the cashier, Karan showed bad behaviour while taking order which was not acceptable. you can't treat a customer like that.
Megha Gupta
Inexperienced staff. Veg curry had bones. Food had lots of garlic. Preparation not up to mark.
Richard Liu
Good deal for the price, although I do feel the curry seems a bit watered and the meat could be denser. Flavour is okay.
Jay Pancholi
Went there to have his world famous tea, charges a dollar extra for sugar free tea.. on reasoning the owner yells saying I can charge whatever I feel like.. also his menu doesn't mention the extra charges for sugarfree tea.

Been to this place 1st time.
Very friendly staff.
Food is average to good but definitely worth for the price you pay .
Ready to eat menu dishes or takeaway.
In one word you can say express food 😉
Rinshu Jaiswal Nerkar
Lamb roghan Super salty couldnt even eat, that was the only Friday dinner we got and we are so so dissappointed... i dont know what to say... you need to taste before serving, this is not acceptable...

Awful service which was not made up for with the food.
Went there at lunchtime to pick up a MealPal lunch but had no data to scan the barcode. I did however take a screenshot of my receipt to show them, which has been fine in other places. They flat out refused to serve me and when I asked to speak to manager that was also refused. The manager was just in the kitchen but refused to come out because he was too busy apparently. I was only able to get the meal because the nice staff at Zambrero next door helped me out with a wifi hotspot.
After this debacle I thought maybe the food would at least make up for it. Dead wrong. Really weak, watery bland chicken tikka masala like nothing I have had before. Certainly nothing like an Indian food I have had in India, in the UK or any other places in NZ. The one thing you expect form Indian food is full flavour!
Save your money and avoid this place....unless you enjoy rude service and bland watery Indian food.

I ordered takeaway, while leaving I asked the person to check whether everything was in it. He confirmed and when I went home and checked 1 combo rice was missing. On calling them he confirmed that he missed the curry rice. This has happened to me twice. Please please do check your order before leaving because the guy in the counter is a lousy idiot

A nice spot in town for a quick curry lunch. I tried their Delhi-style butter chicken – which is medium spice and not sweet like the Westernised butter chicken you get at the mall. It wasn’t a huge portion for $10.90, but I did like the taste and am glad I tried something new. Texture-wise, it would’ve been nice if it was creamier. However, I liked how the rice has some grains in it.

Service was friendly and fast. Would happily recommend for those working in town craving Indian food!
Prab
Small place but definitely serves some good indian food. The service was nice and the quantities seemed to be justified by the price. Would recommend for some quick Indian food in the area.
Mercy
First time coming here was served by a lovely well mannered Indian man. 5/5 for that. But second time coming here was served by an ill mannered Indian lady. 1/5 for that. But their dehli styled butter chicken is amazing.

Not even worth a star. Garlic was very raw at garlic naan. Asked staff to put them in a oven for a bit, but she said i ate a while thing already. Look at the pic. Do u think i ate a whole thing? I only ate a edges. She told me to use napkin to remove garlics. How nice. Also curry was not great as well. I only had a sip and couldn’t finish it. Taste bad and staff attitude is worse. Never gonna come back. Thanks for the bad experience you gave me
Ash
Horrible Indian curry at a expensive price. We had the Delhi style butter chicken and butter chicken and for me it taste like cream lightly spiced not impressed. I would recommend going across the road and getting a curry from the food court downs stairs in the mall. More authentic.
Kartik Khanna
Not the best, but still decent food. Way better than other Indian restaurants in the area. Liked the chicken alloo and delhi style butter chicken.
Dani
Great quality Indian Curry. The portions are perfect and the flavours are superb. Really like the cheese and capsicum vegetarian curry which goes super well with a Garlic Naan bread. Staff are really friendly and approachable, and the service is quick and efficient. Always my go-to place for Indian food in which they never disappoint.

I ordered the butter chicken , liked how the flavour of the dish was real light not too overpowering. Good place to grab a meal 😊. Customer service was good.

I must say one of the best indian food joints. Tried paneer rice and naan. Creamy paneer curry and rice was just awsome. Just loved the place and food. Good hospitality and quality was good. Must try their chai if you are a tea lover. Mixture of elachi and adrak chai. 5 star for the place and good seating arrangements. Loved the ambience and decor. Clean and hygiene restaurant ✌🏾
Kudos team !!

Good fast food Indian priced correclty. I would say the quality was good and the Service was friendly.

One downside was that the food was not served hot it was just warm but overall good Indian that does not taste fast food sweet or anything :)

Will go there again

Recently started taking takeaways from this place and to my delight I have found the perfect takeaway joint as their curries have a nice blend of spices and flavour and the Parathas are yum , typically home cooked style which stands out from so many other restaurants. One suggestion, they should also start selling bigger portions separately from the usual combos as sometimes one just craves for more and the usual quantity served is little less than the average serving from other restaurants ;)
Danny Dsouza
Got mutton curry but disappointed with the quantity. I didn't want rice but its forced upon you. I feel that there should be an option of getting Curry only instead of rice along with it as well. I don't mind paying extra but prefer a container full of curry rather than the double container which is so small and has very less quantity of curry and rice in it. Please look into the same. Not everyone wants to get rice so probably $12 for a container full sounds good as that's what most other restaurants offer as well.

This place serves one of the best paranthas I have eaten in Auckland and at such a reasonable cost. Love the food and is highly recommended. Try butter chicken and Dal Makhani too. Cheers!

Today I Came There With My Friends Just Loved The Aloo Paratha & Dal Makhani Combo ☺️☺️ Best Place To Hangout With Friends And Chill Yummiest Food ❤️ Gonna Visit Again Super Super Super Soon 😍

Great friendly staff and service! Very polite and helpfully explain each curry. The food isn’t anything to write home about but it’s tasty and warm, cheap with a good atmosphere.
Guilherme Gomes
Very friendly staff that makes you feel good with their happy and nice mood. The food is amazing!
I recommend going for a Non-Vege Curry with Rice combo with a Garlic Naan and picking any of those 6 available meals!

Not normally big on Indian food. Very rich n overloaded with spices that make me feel ill later. Oh plus it's often overpriced imo... BUT gave this place a whirl (at the request of my other half) because they actually had a range of different veg curry options. Menu is pretty simple veg curry w rice for I think 7.90. Try the paneer cheese curry. Creamy n delish. (could go with a few more pieces of veg if being particular) rice was great with it. Got a tandoor roti too and was awesome. Oh then we tried the veg samosa which again was super yummy and mildly spiced. Ate inside and the guy serving us was awesome, very proud of the food, turned the music on for us as soon as we sat down inside. Honestly give it a go. This place has made me intrigued to try some other indian type foods. Great service, yummy food, well located and open late! Only thing I'll add is that there should be a description up for the names of the curry's. I checked before we got there (on Google) but I don't think I'm the norm. It'd help to ensure that ppl pick the option best suited to them. Thanks guys n keep it up!

Well maintained place and very friendly staff....Thanks for amazing dinner....Dhal Makhani was full with flavour and fresh made Garlic Naan.. Really appreciate. :-)

Haha! Worst place to eat ! Indian cuisine! Food served cold . Naan is !!!! Can’t even describe the texture its like a frozen naan and place it inside microwave for 1minute and served worst place

The place is not upto the mark at all. I asked him if he can customise the spicy taste a bit more, he agreed and said yes.
To which he just took red chilli powder and added to my bowl... clearly needs to know cooking before running the place.

Don't go even if you are hungry

STARS OUT OF 5 - NOT ELIGIBLE FOR ANY STAR RATING

I went there with family of 4! We ordered 4 parathas and 3 raita , the waiter cum cashier asked us as you are family is it ok if I serve Raita in 1 bowl, we said ok we don't have any problem! Table wasn't clean, no space to sit! Anyways, we had paratha and later 2 of us wanted to have a tea, so we ordered "masala chai"! Other waiter served us the tea, looking at the size (it was too much) I just said to my brother ohh it's too much! I guess he overheard this and later he said (while going) "Guys, Letting you know that Tea can't be shared amongst you" - I found this extremely arrogant and I still don't knw what made him think that we will share the tea! If all of us wanted tea as we ordered 4 parathas, we would've ordered 4 masala chai and anyways we didn't know the size earlier! Doesn't end here---

I didn't like his behaviour and my brother went up to the counter to ask him what made him think like that! Instead of apologising he started arguing that it's you not me and he raised voice! Waiter's behaviour and way of talking was extremely extremely ARROGANT ( I still can't find the reason behind that!)

THIS WAS SO INSULTING !
Probably the best Indian takeaway so far .. the staff are very friendly especially the owner ..

Mutton kasa and Lamb curry are the best according to me do give it a try ...

And for dessert don’t forget to try gulab jaamoon. :)
Gajarhalwa a must try, with rice and curry...
There are two guys at the door, with great smile and greeting way...
We had a good conversation though...
Amazing food for all people, not to sweet and not too spicy...A perfect combo of Indian and Western mix...
Kudos Team Tandoor :)

Reading all others reviews I would like to emphasise that the food at this place is VERY cheap (comparatively) looking at its location and NO ONE should be expecting excellent food OR the same food as you would get in a fine dining Indian restaurant. This is the best home cooked Indian food in Auckland. For people that are very fond of Indian food and especially Indians, know that most of the Indian restaurants and take-away joints serve stale, frozen and expensive food. But you will only get fresh food at The Tandoor!
The Tandoor is run by the most amazing team ever! Manish and his entire team are ALWAYS welcoming each and every customer with a big smile on their face and go out of their way to satisfy everyone's needs. To be very honest, I have never come across such great service even in any top 5 star restaurant in Auckland. They are wonderful and I wish them well for their future!

Limited but decent options for both vegetarians and meat lovers. We ordered a couple of parathas and samosa. The food wasnt hot but warm enough. The service wasn't worth a mention. I had requested atleast a couple of times for pickle and never got one. Wouldn't be my first preference to dine out.

The best paratha one can ever have in Auckland CBD. Paneer, Gobi, Aloo and more. Excellent service and superb ambience. Must try place 👍🏻👍🏻

You get typical Indian curries here. Nothing extraordinary but a good place for a quick takeaway meal.

Location is a super advantage for this new place as all the students, office workers and tourists are hanging out around here.
