Review Gypsy Tea Room - Auckland Central

Marc Beaumont
Great local vibes bar. Service is always spot on, friendly and always good banter. Whether a cold lager out front in the summer, or cosy red wine (or their delightful mulled wine) inside in winter, Gypsy is always a good time.

A hidden gem in grey Lynn. Really tasty sodas and cocktails. The male bar tender with a beard that served us was awesome - very charismatic and seemed like he loved his job! (Something that’s very hard to see in hospitality these days)

Quaint as and feels like home!! Even if you didn’t grow up in a bar.

Great team at the Gypsy. Scotty and Mikey are legends. Great place for a casual drink or two and to meet friends. Great atmosphere!

Great room, great beer, and bartenders with personality.

What a pumping little place of wonderousment! Great staff and everything you could desire on the drinks menu. Cute little private function room out the back for groups of two dozen or less. Thanks for a great night team.

I was made welcome by the bar staff, whom chatted to us, very friendly and polite!

Awesome location, very cool décor, the staff are charming. Excellent spirit collection 👌 there is great space out back for private events too.

Sean was the best bartender I’ve ever met in my life

Fabulous local bar with a great range of local and imported beers, wines and spirits. Fun place to sit outside and people watch !

Relaxed calming atmosphere. Amazing tea cocktails. Excellent time with friends.

I'd go again! The drinks were delicious. The barman was great. Originally it was just us in the little bar but more people slowly started to show up and continue to add to the almost speakeasy vibe. Really cool place for a drink

A timeless classic. Fairly priced with great service. Wonderful location, building and terrace. Adored by locals and visitors alike.

Only place I could find in either Ponsonby or Grey Lynn on a Friday night where we could actually relax without bad music.

The best neighbourhood bar in NZ hands down

GTR .... OK, Gypsy Tea Rooms is dim and cosy and reasonably priced and the staff are personable and the service is quick. It feels like a place where the business is backgrounded and the vibe is the priority, which is uncommon in Auckland today. A great place to hang out, catch up, watch and nibble.

Amazing cocktails and very friendly staff! Could pay by card or with Apple Pay. Recommended!

Probably the best old fashioned wine bar in the city. Its very relaxing here. Service and atmosphere is always good. A great mix of artistic/executive crowd.

I love this place, with it's intimate, bohemian vibe. Great place for after work drinks, we had tall gins and shared a pizza, both very nice thank you!

Barman was friendly and attentive. Good range of beverages. Our table felt like the pizza was underwhelming and over priced. The atmosphere was cosy.

this is a great restaurant. Certain ingredients and variants of menu may get finished by the end of the day. Busy at peak times. Convenient location. Easy access. Staff is good.
Like
What a quaint vintage looking place! With cocktails served in teapots and teacups, bring back the prohibition! Loving the dark ambience, with cool music and lovely staff. There is also extra rooms behind, so do go check it out. Definitely a cool place to chill.

Went in with a friend- drunk their genuine Czech Pilsner. Great beer. Service was fine. We also had a couple of pizzas- tasty but a bit expensive for what they were. The arancini were a bit average, but not too bad. Really good atmosphere.

Microwaved rice balls and pretentious service... if you are not a local stay away. Second time here leaving with a horrible taste. Next time I will go across the road instead.

Great little place in Grey Lynne, awesome friendly staff, great teapot cocktails very welcome air con on the day we were there, we did not eat but I must say the smells coming out from the kitchen were devine.

We will be back to eat next time thank you ladies.

Such a cool chilled out place with a great selection of drinks, however the food is terrible, hence the low rating. It tastes like pre made frozen food that's not heated up properly when it comes out. Also way too overpriced- I'd rather just come here for the drinks and eat elsewhere.

I accidentally found this bar while browsing the Offerbook app in the search for a nice night out with my friends. The cocktails were nice, but the atmosphere is very depressing- its very dark and you feel like you are visiting your great-grandmother in her old house. It is very relaxing.

Rachel Benge and I stumbled upon this place thinking we were coming to somewhere with a Shisha pipe. Although they didn't have this, the food came out fast and was nice and also the cocktails were lovely. Definitely a great place to go if you're in Grey Lynn!

First time here... Snacky food, which was great. Nice cocktails. Quite a few people for a Tuesday night. Jazzy music, WARM! Just a good place to chill out and have a few drinks. Not too bad overall.

Best bar in Auckland. I am a regular customer of Gypsy Tea Room and find the bar staff amazing to deal with. Great local spot with a casual atmosphere and great tunes to help you ease into a great evening. Highly recommended.

This place is great, Staff usually have an encyclopaedic Knowledge of alcohol, & it's cosy & atmospheric.
However I was humiliated at the bar last night for requesting a new rum.My order was slowly repeated back to me in a patronizing monotone replete with eye-rolls.Warming to his growing audience the jaded idiot bartender then proceeded to aggressively mock me further for my choice & for asking if i could have the rum straight with a single chunk of ice (to break it up a bit).
He had already dumped a large scoop of ice into the glass(drink wasn't poured yet) & I think it annoyed him that i wanted to change this, he explained that the mass of ice was actually "a single chunk" as requested but" in many bits" whilst his sycophantic colleague sniggered along, there was more to the exchange but I've already wasted enough time typing & dwelling on this...
one gentleman at the bar witnessed the whole exchange & half-smiled incredulously asking me "i take it you two know each other then", imagining that could be the only explanation for my caustic treatment. Thankfully we don't know each other.
I work in hospitality, front of house , at a small boutique coffee roasters with a constantly rotating selection of specialty origin coffees, some people find the selection bewildering but I'm there to talk them through their potential options. I have an acknowledgement of my limits when dealing with the public, I look after myself, do my job, focus & don't allow myself to burn out, become jaded & aggressive /sarcastic with people who are paying me good money for a great product.
I treat them like guests in my home. If you're reading this you know who you are mate, you've always been cool before on my previous visits & a great host but I think you should take some time out, relax, look after yourself & come back to work when you're ready to be civil, I'm sorry if you were having a bad night when we interacted, but that's not my problem. I wasn't that drunk that I was numb to being your plaything for a few uncomfortable minutes. I just wanted a drink.

Love the Gypsy Tea Rooms. Just love it. Was there last night actually and marveled at the ability of the owner to select consistently excellent waiting staff. Easily the best bar staff in all of Auckland. I've even asked them for restaurant ideas and they have provided a perfect result. I have been drinking here for 6 years - my wife probably 10 years or more. The food is what it is - bar food and pretty damn fine. I've had it all and fancy the cheese platter with soft bread. The vibe is cool, casual and I've never seen a belligerent drunk here. It is an intimate mood and a great date night. 5 thumbs up ... love it.

Visited Gypsy Tearooms twice over the last couple of weeks (August 2013) Found it to be very much the same as it was the last time we visited in about 2005. The front of house staff are excellent, friendly and very service oriented. This looks to be a favourite neighbourhhood bar and that is no surprise given the good vibe and great team.

Great little bar, always draws a good crowd, and nothing wrong with the drinks or service, all great. Just be warned, food is utter cr*p. Have been here on 2 occasions, once got rissotto balls that weren't cooked, just cold piles of risotto rolled in breadcrumbs. Pizza is ok, nothing but a big grilled cheese sandwich, which is ok but calling it pizza is a stretch, though at that price they should put in a little more effort. Bar is fine though, just fire the chef.

WOW. This place is amazing. If I had more money I would go there all the time. Lovely relaxing atmosphere, with dim lighting, candles (without looking cliche/ old fashioned), wicked cocktails, and the nibbles were to die for. Also they do wine tastings!
