Heard so much about the Steak & Guinness Pie that we had to try it out. Hubby had the large one, me the small. Both did not disappoint and both were ample servings. Flakey puff pastry sealed over the top of a bowl of steaming hot steak filling, served with crispy beer battered chips and a green salad. Tasty and very well-priced. Great pub, awesome staff.

Outstanding pints of Guinness! đ I spent 15 years in the UK so I know my pours and pipes. The decor is proper pub - loads of heavy wooden features, stained glass, cabinet curiosities and a lush crackling fireplace. The service is a bit all over the place but warm at heart and the regulars seem really at home. Sports on the screens and a hearty looking menu. The price of the pints will exclude my humble custom on the regular but when I can Iâll be back. đ„

Great place in Howick for a drink and a meal. Staff are friendly and great atmosphere. Parking is plentiful around the premise. They have various specials for different days of the week. Particularly love their Steak Night on Thursdays. Generous servings and very well priced. Ask for rare if you like your steak medium-rare.

Came here for lunch one weekday afternoon after hearing good reviews about their seafood chowder. Place was fairly empty I guess given its a bar and we are there on a weekday afternoon. Ordered the seafood chowder and a fish and chips. Both dishes were quite good and the seafood chowder was nice but just a tad bit too salty. Service was pretty good so will probably come back at some point.

It was the first time my family and I had a meal here, we had breakfast in the morning then came back for dinner on the same day, we loved it, a good old Irish pub. Busy at night though, very popular so expect a bit of a waiting time, just drink a few Killkennys to kill the time.

My husband and I often eat here. Tonight I had the Trio of lamb special which was exquisite. Fergus had the prosciutto wrapped chicken breast which was tasty and juicy. Definitely far better than you would expect for pub food!

Came here for lunch on St Patrickâs day and I must say I was very impressed. The staff were lovely and the food came out very quick. I ordered from the lunch special menu which was great value for money. I ordered the chicken wrap which came with a side salad and fries. All for $18. The portion was huge and was very tasty. Would highly recommend the barell Inn Howick.

It had been many many years since we visited The Barrel Inn. We had heard reviews about how tired the place looked, and while this is true (same decor for 20+ years) the food, drinks & service were great on the night we visited. Friends had also told us how great it was - not sure if there has been a change of owner? Certainly a vast improvement!<br/>Service wise everyone was incredibly friendly & welcoming with prompt delivery of food & good banter. <br/>The food was really a stand out though which you wouldnât necessarily expect!<br/>We ordered the Sunday roast which at $12.00 there wasnât huge expectations - well it was delicious! Pork shoulder (tender & perfectly cooked) crispy potatoes, and all the trimmings. There was also a larger size which a friend chose as he was hungry - it was huge.<br/>1/2 pint at $5.90 is pretty reasonable too <br/>So a good surprise & will definitely be back.

We were at Barrel Inn for a triple treat Tuesday dinner for $28. On top of the tap beer (or house wine), I had roast pork shoulder & sticky date pudding with vanilla ice-cream; my wife had pan-fried tarakihi & lemon tart with ice-cream. Food was excellent - especially the fish which I also tried. (Food - 4/5; Service - 4/5; Ambience - 3/5)

When the Barrel Inn opened bout 12 years ago it was extremely popular to the point where it was difficult to get a table on a Friday evening, the food was always good quality pub food. Over the years the quality of the food seemed to deteriorate a bit and the pub seemed to have fewer customers. Â My wife and I decided to try the Barrell Inn again for dinner recently after not eating there for a number of years, wow! what a change in the quality of the food. Â We've eaten here three times in the last few weeks, we've had the steak pie, breaded chicken, beef burger, etc. on our recent visits and the food quality is above our expectations and the portions more than ample, the service has also been excellent. Â Now superb pub food - well done.

We went to the Barrel for dinner last night and I chose the "Meat platter" special. This came with venison rump, lamb back strap, chorizo and ribs, as well as pickles, sauce and fries. The quality of the meat was excellent and cooked exactly as I had requested. Presentation was excellent. A meal that wouldn't have been out of place in a fine dining establishment.

Went to the Barrel Inn on Saturday night to try their nightly special which was the Rib steak with roast vegetable that evening. The meal was beautiful, one of the best steaks I have ever eaten and was a very generous portion. Excellent value for money and great service

Decided to have lunch at "The Barrel Inn" today - Great friendly service and I decided to try the Pork Belly, it was delicious! My husband had the roast of the day which was the lamb and he really enjoyed it too. We are both going to return again soon. We were really impressed. Highly recommended!

Had dinner here with my family back in October '13. From the outside the building looks unappealing but once we opened the doors a beautiful small pub emerged (recently done up)<br/><br/>The food took quite a while to come, average as far as pub food is concerned but still delicious none the less!<br/><br/>I think if they worked on pumping meals out quicker and made the outside was beautiful as the inside it would be even more of a local hit!<br/><br/>I would definitely return to the Barrel Inn!

Do not host a private function at this venue! No communication from the staff other than a last minute phone call in the few days leading up asking for the party to be pushed back later so that regulars would still be able to be there. After arriving at the venue was told that no one would be asked to leave or to not come into the venue even if not invited, even though we had organised a bar tab and private function (it's uncomfortable to cut a birthday cake, while a stranger stands behind you eating steak and another walks through the bar wearing jandels and shorts and playing the pokies). Bar staff would not allow music to be played too loud in case it disturbed the regulars. Food was laid out, and gluten free food was forgotten, even though it was requested weeks in advance, host of the party had to wait 40 minutes to eat after everyone else! Staff member checking ID's of invitees declined some attending even if over the age of 23, had to have a fight to get them through the door on the side of the road. Totally ridiculous. At the end of the evening staff began to pack up and clean before the party was over, and sat staring at all of the invitees until everyone felt uncomfortable and left early. Made for a terrible evening. Was a regular to the weekly quizzes and countless meals there with family. Will never be going here again after this horrible experience.

Whilst staff are friendly with a ready smile, the service, including the clearing of & wiping down of tables & getting meals to the customer in an acceptable time frame after ordering still unfortunately lets this establishment down.<br/>Meals are no less adequate than any other pub, some dishes a little overpriced but all in all the food, once you actually get it is basic & value for money.

Haven't been for a while but going to the local movie theatre we thought we would give Barrel Inn another go. Mistake! Very average food. The service was slow but to be fair it was very busy because of the test match (we forgot when we booked a table). Anyway, open cheese steak sandwich declared as "OK", burger likewise so the boys weren't exactly raving. My girlfriend and I love to have salads with hot meat/chicken. I chose the Chicken Teriyaki, my friend the Beef salad. Mine was fine but the crushed peanuts throughout the salad I found a strange addition. My girlfriend said her beef salad was awful, again full of crushed peanuts which she had to pick out as she doesn't like peanuts. The beef was not strip stir fry but more like chunks of roast beef, dry and tough. NOTE: On the menu NO mention was made that the salads contain nuts! We both feel that with so many allergies these days, especially nut ones, that it should mention on the menu that nuts are in the salad. If this had been the case my girlfriend would of told them to hold the nuts, instead she had to pick out every one. We actually thought it was a dangerous thing to include them automatically. So all in all a very "average" dinner and we won't be going back unless they up their ball game.

Awesome service, the new management & staff are great. Food was great value for your money. Tasty, home cooked style food. We went for breakfast and it was a challenge to eat all the yummy food served. Service with a smile!
