Review Angie's Kitchen - Auckland Central

Benedict Uy
Nice Malaysian place hidden on Mount Street between Symonds and Wakefield street. Tasty food at fairly cheap prices so it gets quite busy during lunch. Not too many tables and they are pack in quite close so it could get quite loud when full. Really friendly service so always wanting to come back for more.

Angie's kitchen has a great atmosphere and seems to be always packed with people. The prices are typical, slightly expensive for what they give me but given their location and my desperation, its not too bad. Be careful with what you choose because I think the chef is really good at making half the menu and the other half just tastes and feels slightly weird but besides that., its a nice place.

Always a great place for quick meal. Real south east asian food. The service is good, the food is tasty and more importantly it's cheap. Great for students.

It is an alright restaurant if you want to get a taste of Malaysian food. Very friendly staffs, highly recommended if you're in the location :)

Best malaysian in town - have been eating here since uni days. Authentic and not too salty with reasonable price
Rachel Terrien
Wonderful customer service with a delightful menu. Loved the Laksa- extremely authentic although the Rendang left quite a bit to be desired.
M C
Good Malaysian food including a range of mee goreng options and has roti canai

Used to come here as student back in 2007, i came back again today and food quality is still as good as before!

The one of the best Malaysian restaurant in Central Auckland

Surprisingly tasty food, hidden location never knew it existed!

I love their Biryani Chicken yummo!
Kazuto Kora (Kaz)
Very good Malaysian restaurant.

Chicken satay was succulent and perfectly seasoned. The laksa was ok and the service excellent. There are no frills here but it is a clean and pleasant place to enjoy good Malaysian food.

Great friendly hosts and the Nasi goreng kampung is the specialty. Shame they will be moving on around May. Hope they turn out somewhere again in the near future.

Cosy restaurant tucked away from bustling road. Be prepared to look for a car park. Good portions of food and friendly service. We had the Nyonya Fried Bee Hoon, Wat Tan Hor, Nasi Lemak and Chicken Laksa. The food was not the best Malaysian I have tasted. We find the Wat Tan Hor bland and the rest of the dishes we ordered were just ok.

Very nice nasi goreng kampung! Gem in the middle of the university precinct! Not dure why i have missed this place in 18 years. Will definitely come back hahaha

We visited this place on a Friday night. We had Nasi lemak and Beef Rendang. The Nasi lemak was okay and not outstanding. But the Beef Rendang disappointed me as it was low on flavour. Not the best of malaysian restaurants. However, the food was fresh and if they put some more on flavour that would make excellent dish.

This is a relatively authentic Malaysian place - very mom and pop feel to the restaurant and the furnishings won't remind you of a classy place, but this place certainly makes up for it with their food and service. It won't be the best I've eaten, but their service is quick, friendly and humbling.
Hungryfoxbb
Nice and compact restaurant that does average Malaysian food. Pricing is reasonable but their food is not so good that I have only been here once, don't think I will return as there are other much better Malaysian places around.

If you were looking for something in the CBD area, it isn't too bad but not the best.

The food here is quite tasty, and is definitely along the lines of Malaysian cuisine. However, it is not the best out of all the Malaysian restaurants I've tried in Auckland, so far.

The rice in the Hainan chicken rice could do with a stronger chicken flavour, whereas the mee goreng that I had could do with a bit more colour.

Also, the Teh tarik was a bit lacking in froth and colour (a mixture of it not being "pulled" enough and a lighter brew of tea served).

All in all, these are very minor details and could very well be suited to some with a taste for a milder flavours.

The one gripe that I have with this store is the fact that they charge $1 for a takeaway container (on top of that, the container provided is not one of the high quality plastic takeaway boxes, but the cheap porous polystyrene containers).

Of course being Malaysian, I would never waste food, so I paid to take home my leftovers. On the plus side, the food serving is decent and each meal could feed two adults who eat moderate portions!

Husband and I have not visited this place since University since it is tucked away in the side street. However the other day when we were in the area and suddenly remembered the place, we thought we had to come dine here!

The guy serving us was friendly, with a wicked sense of humour. Husband started with the rose syrup with condensed milk - a Malaysian specialty apparently. The colour was bright pink and gorgeous, and he really enjoyed the taste. It was a bit too out there and overly sweet for my liking to be honest!

The Hokkien noodle was just as tasty as we remembered - saucy and hearty. I was very grateful that they were happy to make my stir fry rice noodles vegetarian my replacing meat with lots of tofu and vegetables :) Although I thought the flavours could be more intense.

The serving portions were satisfying and perfect for one. We ended our meal by sharing a sago pudding. The brown sugar syrup at the bottom of the dish was just heavenly, reminded me of the caramel sauce on Taiwanese puddings. The sweetness was also perfectly balanced with coconut cream.

Was a bit sad that this is apparently their last year here :( Would love to come and visit again before they are permanently gone!

A humble little restaurant across the street from the O'Rorke Hall. My friend and I just wanted a little something, not a big meal so we ordered a chicken satay appetiser to share. I personally thought the food was good but not mind-blowing and a little pricey ($20 in total). I saw the guy behind me had a massive portion of noodles so it's probably worth it for the mains. The food came promptly and the service was friendly.
Benedict Uy
Came for lunch specifically for the sago pudding. We had quite a large table (about 10) so we had pre-ordered during booking. The food was good and quite tasty and most items were under $20. Most of the items on the menu is generally quite tasty. I thought that the sago needed more sauce (coconut and Gula Mekala) but otherwise was good.

Been here a few weeks back with 2 of my colleagues. The food tasted nothing special really, was annoyingly an overdose of sprouts in them! When I went up to the owner to enquire about halal certificate etc, he for some reason was grumpy and replied quite loudly.. Unpleasant experience. Moreover my noodles had an egg shell in it which I discovered only after finishing 80% of the dish. Ewww! I'm never coming back for sure..

Once a month went here for some food. The chef and waiter is friendly. The food, yeah its pretty good. However, the price is a bit pricy compared to the asian-cuisine restaurants I've visited in Auckland CBD.

Good place to go if your place is nearby and you dont mind spending some extra $$
Anjali Gupta
Decent food, but service is a bit slow. Also, call the place before going, as sometimes it is closed even though as per the timings mentioned online, it should be open.

Listed in Metro's top 100 cheap eats, we thought we'd give this place a try! Tucked away from the main road, it's very convenient for uni students nearby. Parking isn't the easiest, as you'll often find in the city but once your there the service is friendly and the restaurant has a nice casual vibe to it.

We ordered the Mamak Kuay Teow Goreng and Tau kwa chien – both dishes were a reasonably portioned and a decent price. The Tau Kwa Chien was quite refreshing with the combination of cucumber and sweet chilli but the tofu was a bit dry. We thought the Mamak Kuay Teow Goreng was good, the flavour was there but was missing its authentic kick!

Not sure if I would make a special trip to return but would be worth checking out for those in the area.

Expected a bit more tasty food. But it was not that much for me. Reasonable price. Halal food that was the reason i been there. Parking was a a issue for me.

Been a regular at Angie's kitchen for several years now and always have my fav Hainan chicken rice and also wa tan hor noodles and hits the spot most of the time which we had this time . Other fav include the mee goreng and char Kuay teow. Not the best in Auckland but it's ok once in awhile to try it out. Parking is always tricky so avoid peak times as it gets busy with students closeby the university and AUT with hostels and apartments around the area . Well worth checking out if in the area !

I came to Angie's kitchen a copy of days ago but it was already full during lunch time, I went to City campus last Wednesday and decided to give another try. I ordered a Angie's special which was fried egg noodles with chicken, fish cakes, heaps of veggies and special sauce. So good!!!

After spotting it in Metro's Cheap Eats 2015, we thought we'd give it a try, because who doesn't love (supposedly) good food at a good price? Sadly, our meal didn't quite live up to our expectation.

The menu options are what you would expect, with a few different options to keep you curious. Excited to see my personal favourite, but not-so-common mee rebus on the menu, I added this to the order with no hesitation, alongside the Hainanese chicken rice and roti chanai.

The mee rebus was not what I had hoped it was going to be- it was a little light on filling and sauce, but heavy on noodles and bean sprouts. The roti was very sweet and lacked texture, and the chicken curry accompaniment was flavoursome but nothing like a Malaysian curry I'd ever eaten before. Saving the meal was the Hainanese chicken rice- chicken was well cooked and seasoned with a sweet soy sauce. The rice was perhaps a little underdone for my liking, but the 'chicken rice' flavour was there. We washed down the meal with cold teh tarik and milo ais- both lacked flavour and were very watered down.

Lovely service and atmosphere for a casual meal, and it was great to see lots of diners in for a meal and waiting to takeaway. Pains me to say that the overall meal was pretty average, because I was hoping it'd be my regular Malaysian. Might go back to try my luck at the rest of the menu but in the meantime, the search continues!

Angie's kitchen is a very cute little place on mount street. I've been here a couple of times and it doesn't disappoint. I've had the the noodles but quite keen to try other dishes next time. They have a range of yummy authentic Malaysian dishes that are packed with flavours. Service was friendly and welcoming so overall pretty good eat.

Tried this place out a few months back. It's probably the first malaysian restaurant I've tried. The staff were really friendly and we got our orders really quick. The food was alright, pretty average though. But their serving sizes are large, we couldn't finish it! I'd probably prefer other malaysian restaurants but this one is really convenient since it's located inside the university campus. ZomatoStudents

Ambience: 3/5
Cleanliness: 4/5
Service: 4/5
Food: 3.5/5

Food quality is just ok. If you are ordering Roti Canai, you will be disappointed to know they use Kawan brand, the frozen pack of roti canai.

I recommend you try Nasi Lemak and Nasi Kandar(only available on Sunday's). It's has strong Malaysian flavours and close to authentic Malaysian food

Restaurant is really small not really suitable for big group of people, although they do take bookings for max 20 people, but there is hardly any place for you or other patrons to walk. Although they do have level 1 with big round table, but they won't really open unless downstairs is really full.

Went there for dinner last night. It's a great place to sort out dinner at as it's close to the uni. Food were good; especially the lasi lemak. They also serve traditional desserts. Prices for food are reasonable.

Great food! Loved it! It is worth the prices! Its in a very hidden location and a very confined place. The staff is very accommodating and friendly!

Came here today for lunch. Unfortunately the food was quite disappointing. I had Mamak mee Goreng, they have the flavour right, the flavour is good. But when I order a dish such as this, I expect to have 90% of noodles on my plate and 10% of other ingredients such as vegetables and meat, well if you have this dish here expect it to be 70% bean sprouts. This really annoys me, if I wanted to just eat bean sprouts then I will order that.
Also it really affects my opinion of the value of the dish, I think it was $11.50 and I know bean sprouts retail are $1.50. I feel like they use bean sprouts as a filler to make the dish more to cut on cost. That is also why the portion is huge.
Even though the service was good, I will probably not be back.
Ryan
Tried seafood laksa and Ayam sambal. It is authentic Malay but the Ayam sambal was a bit too sweet with only 2 pieces of chicken. Seafood was minimal in the laksa. Reasonably priced at many dishes averaging around $12 but with cheap eats popping up more and more frequently, you can get better value Malaysian in city.

We came in as a group of 15 on a Sunday afternoon and the staff were so accommodating. Our food came out reasonably fast and was all consistent. The man who served us was so friendly and we apologise for not communicating properly. I ordered the Nasi Gorend Kampung for $14.50. It was delicious with generous sauce, variety of meats; fish, shrimp and chicken. The fried rice was great with nice flavours and less common veges like celery in the rice. I would fault them on the price as the portion wasn't proportionate to the price. And not all of our food came out at the same time. With a difference of 20mins from the first to last plate.

If you're looking for authentic Malaysian food from the heart, look no further. Annie's Kitchen may not have Mamak's ambience or decor but it am certainly makes up for that in taste and service. Food has been on point every time I have gone and I can proudly say I am now a regular customer. Service has always been familial and friendly and recommendations are always welcomed. Definitely a place for a hearty Malaysian feed!

It's quite a hidden and small restaurant but it was busy when we came in. We ordered Chicken Nasi Lemak(tastes good, but I dont know why they want to dye the rice into blue, heard it's not natural color),Asam Laksa (with rice noodles, tastes like Tomyum but slightly different) and Pandan dessert (with marinated coconut shreds inside. So yum~~i like it very much~~). Average $15 per person.
Victoria
Sorry, didn't love it. It was authentic but a bit of the sweet side. I just have very high expectations for malay food with parents from Singapore and Malaysia and having eaten in both countries. It wasn't bad but I wouldn't go back.

I had a nice and filling lunch here today! All the "Char" menu looked really tasty and I eventually decided to go with the "Hokkien Char",it was really tasty and had a very strong flavour and well-charred. However I thought the flavour was a little bit too strong and salty by the end of my meal. I'd have loved something refreshing to go with the meal such as cool cucumbers or a drizzle of lemon juice. It was only after I ordered that I realised they have a really interesting "Nasi Lemak", which turned out to be BLUE rice so that's definitely something I would go back for. I also had a classic "Teh tarik", which is Malaysian hot milk tea. The first sip was slightly sugery for some reason but it was very a very rich, dense and milky drink that was ideal for a winter meal. The price was a little bit of a setback as I was expecting around $10 dishes for lunch menus, but their average price was $12/13, which could be because they are a small, family-operated "kitchen" style restaurant. I would definitely be keen to try their blue Nasi Lemak rice and some authentic Malaysian desserts next time!

I can't remeber the name of this dish. But i think it's quite tasteless. You know i hope it might be salt or have a feeling of omelet more that these. But the restaurant is located in a good area. Next time i will try another menu :)

I have to say i use to like Angies kitchen a lot, but the quality of their stuff appalls me. so i went in for dinner today thinking we can eat some malay food, then this really rude waiter came to serve us. the table was dirty and unclean so we asked if its possible to wipe it, he looked really reluctant to do it but eventually did because i kept starring at him. He then walked slowly back with the cloth and wiped it slowly and the table was still unclean when he finished, so we proceed to ask him to do it again. He then said to me "patience" and wiped it again, but it was still really dirty. so we thought lets just forget about it and enjoy our food. the food came and it was as good as usual, but i prefer to eat my "nasigoreng" extra sour, but the one that came with it looks dry and its been left out of the fridge for days, so we asked for another one, the rude waiter then proceed to look at me like im crazy and said no. He didn't politely decline but just said it in the rudest way possible. i would never ever go back to that place again, the service is disgusting.

I have been here once before a few years ago. Today we decided to visit Angie's for lunch and it was especially good because it was so close to uni!

I ordered a prawn noodle soup. It initially came with egg noodles but when I asked to swap for rice noodles it cost me $2 more. I did it anyway but I don't really get why it costs that much to switch noodles when some restaurants don't charge for it at all...
However, my food came within five minutes. So quick! And it tasted pretty good.

My friend wanted to order the nasi goreng and instead was recommended another dish by the waiter. It came out as an omelette filled with rice. It was pretty cool actually and apparently tasted good as well. We shared a sago pudding afterwards. The sago was good! But we weren't too sure what the brown sauce at the bottom was.

The restaurant is quite small, and the tables are quite cramped but this is really good for a uni student's lunch! Average prices around $13 for a relatively big portion of food. I would definitely come back here again!

Proportion of food was not sized to feed humans, $13 I was expecting portion that will fill me for lunch but I guess not....................

Takeaway a "Chicken Lasi Lemak" and turns out the chicken was raw. So went back and informed the lady who was working there that my chicken was raw, she looked at it with her hands, strangely told me that its suppose to be that and its fine.
Instead of providing me a brand new dish (new chicken, new rice and extra toppings) instead, they just replaced the chicken in the same container that it gave with.

Im very disappointed with the service and the food was pretty avg. - wont recommend this malay place to peers.

Good food and good service. Also nice that's it's close to Uni ????

Worst Tau Fu Fa I have ever tasted.
Wasted $4 for it.
It tasted like nothing.
Even street vendors can sell this for a better price.
Somehow rude uncle customer service wise

It is a warm little place for people who are hungry for Malaysian/Singaporean cuisine. I came across Angie's Kitchen when I was staying in an apartment nearby while I was in Auckland for a short business trip. So decided to pay a visit. I've ordered Kuay Teow Soup and it was just wonderful, the portion is big and the price is reasonable. Also, they have some of the most traditional Malaysian/Singaporean dessert. So I decided to go for Ice Kacang take-away, then again, the portion and price is what I was looking for. Overall, it was a wonderful experience eating at Angie's. Would definitely return and order something different! Highly recommended to those who are home sick!

The beef rendang was tasteless and lacked any real flavour; this coming from a Malaysian. I'll give them 2 stars for generous servings, quick service and cheap prices.
Ashley Young
Angie's is one of my favourite places to go for a quick and tasty meal that is kind on the wallet. The staff are always friendly and the portion sizes are generous. I can't stop getting the hokkien char, char kuay teow, tau kwa salad, and teh tarik. Angie's also has a good selection of Malaysian desserts; personally, I find the kuih ketayap are a delicious way to end a meal. The restaurant is quite small so it can get rather busy and bustling; but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy their food, they also do takeaways!
Taryn Saggese
Angie's is a great little place. The food is tasty and great value for money. I also mean to try different things from the menu but it's hard to drag myself away from the old favourites of Hokkien char or mamak mee goreng. Will keep coming back :)
Angie Lau
I heard a lot bout them thus me n my friends went and have a try! We ordered hokkien noodle (nice fragrant when its served-taste nice), asam laksa (spicy, full of flavour n big portion~yummy:taste just like those I had in Penang), mamak mee goreng (a bit different than Malaysian usual style but I like their home-made sauce anyway) & sago pudding (perfect to end the meal with).
Service is good, clean environment. Good price.
I will definitely go back again.

I did used to frequent Angie's Kitchen.

I found the dishes to be very big and suitable to share between 2 people. As lunch for one person, I had a difficult time tucking it away into me.

The flavours are generally good, although the texture is lumps of meat or vege instead of the more finely sliced meat I expect in Malaysian cafe cuisine.

I tried the Mee Siam - new at the time - it was not what I was brought up on :( and thus a disappointment).

I love the roti. Crunchy, hint of coconut.

Verdict: it's all right.
Rod
Angies Kitchen is a great place with friendly service and superb food. Prices are very reasonable. While the place can be very busy at times and sometimes you can wait quite a while for the food it is certainly worth the wait whether you are a fan to Malysian cuisine or are new to the experience. Char Kuay Teow and Hainanese Chicken Rice are my favourites with a special mention to Chicken nasi Lemak!
John Lee
My partner and I have recently dined at Angie's Kitchen on Mount St and I must say we won't be back again.

We paid full price for the meals without using any vouchers yet we find the service is appalling and the food at best bland. Malaysian Satay Restaurant in ALbany and Bunga Raya restaurant / Selera out west is way more superior than this outfit.

Quite recently they have also introduced a 50-cent charge for a polystyrene disposable container. I guess

I have been a frequent customer with over 20+ visits within the last 3 months that was the last straw.

I will never go back there again.
Court
You could not pay me to go back there. The food was inedible! I had a deal voucher, it seems they wanted to make a quick buck rather than build a customer base judging by the poor quality of their food and service. For $25 it was a complete rip off! One of our dishes was a prawn dish and it only had two prawns in it!
Sychan
I had a deal voucher but had forgot about it. On the last day around 4pm I rang to book but they said they were fully booked for the entire day (without even asking when I would like to come in). So I asked if they would allow takeaways which they said was fine. However when I arrived there 10 minutes later to order and pick up my food, there were many tables empty with only 1 table with a "reserved" sign. When I handed the voucher over to the waitress, she turned to her friends and said "today is the last day" and shot them a look I can only describe as saying "typical." This is my fourth time going there and I can say that I'm very unimpressed with the service. I've had better Malaysian food at other restaurants around Auckland without having to deal with this kind of attitude. Wouldn't recommend it if you're looking for at least average service.
Rachellow
The food is ok. Selera is much better in my opinion. However the last time I went, the service was really bad, the old man who was serving us was extremely rude and was not pleasant at all. We had brought a voucher along and was not happy that we did book even though at the time only 2 tables were occupied. I don't understand why it would be a problem when it's not busy. Terrible service. Would not recommend it
Karen Fernandez
They have PETAI!!! I had some, then had to bring some home for my Malaysian friend - she almost cried, she was so happy. Highly recommended for all Malaysians!!! Reasonably priced, and they have dishes nobody else has. (The bandung or rose syrup drink was waaay too sweet though).
Rufina Pragono
Overall very satisfied with this malaysian restaurant, although have been disappointed by the last 2 visits. But I can recommend everyone, to avoid disappointment, come to this restaurant not during rush hour (especially lunch, terrible!), and order Char Kwe Tiauw. It's the best menu that I have tried so far and the most reasonable price (Assam laksa is not recommended, too pricy and tastes bitter). Coming to this place when it is busy will result in 35-minute waiting time until the food comes (it usually only takes 5 minutes when not busy), food is cooked in a hurry so will not taste that good.
Yvonne
Bought a $25 deal voucher for $63 worth of "delicious" dishes (as it claims). Absolutely not worth it though. Quality is average, while quantity is way below average!!! Not even worth $20, not to mention the so claimed $63...
Not recommended, at all.
Cheryl Francis
I am always keen to try Malaysian places being of Malaysian decent, and the ratings definitely looked good. But I was really disappointed here. Roti flaky and thin, mutton curry watery and flavourless and the Char K Teow not very spicy and very bland. Teh tarik was also so strange tasting noone in the party could drink it. The best bit I have to say was the biscotti on the side of the tea. So overall a small, overlit but very cheap place with average Malaysian food. Wouldn't recommend or go back.
Adeline
Angie's Kitchen never fails to disappoint me and my guests. Food is authentic, tasty, affordable and wide-ranging. Our only gripe is that it doesn't do individual/separate dishes to go with rice. If their individual dishes are sooooo yummy, imagine what they can whip up with if they started serving separate dishes to go with rice. :)

Regardless, it is our 'fail-safe' Malaysian restaurant!
Sue Wong
A friend of mine told me about Angie's Kitchen, it's his new favourite haunt and being Malaysian myself, I'm always keen to try out another Malaysian restaurant.
The restaurant was warm and inviting, Angie's family are absolutely lovely and very hospitable. I love that the menu has photos of some of their popular dishes and because of this, I couldn't help but order the Prawn Noodle Soup, sambal eggplant with prawns, tea tarik and a sago pudding. All of the dishes I ordered were mouth wateringly aromatic and delicious. With each salivating bite, memories came flooding back and I just couldn't wait to tell my Mum about the place. I almost ordered a third dish to take home with me but it was closing time. My goal is to try as many dishes as I can from the menu...this Malaysian will definately be coming back for more!

I don't think I have been so excited about a restaurant to actually create an account on this website and comment on that specific restaurant. From my personal experience, my meal at Angie's Kitchen was superb, though it was only my first time to eat there. I first found out about the place from a suggestion a friend gave me. I must say was I pleased! Though it was a cold breezy day, the environment was heart warming with the cheerful laughter and uplifting chit-chat around us. I particularly like the service- utensils were served with disposable gloves (which was one thing I saw very necessary but never done in restaurants) and great detail to tidiness of placing of utensils/ fish tank/ curios and other interesting objects that are intriguing yet not odd. The food came in very generous portions, large clean cuts of meat/ seafood, everything was well spiced or seasoned and you could taste, that everything was very fresh. I had a taste of what my other friends bought and boy, was I huge disappointed; of the inability to buy more of the dishes there! The dishes, either the rice or noodle dishes were all very superb and surpassed my expectations. Don't get my started on the dessert part; what seemed like an ordinary custard like dessert turned out to be an extra-flavour intensive traditional rye dessert with lychees; mouth-watering indeed! I was so gobsmacked of the quality of the food I did not think about how much I was going to pay for it. Being a conscious spender and careful foodie I am very thoughtful on how I spend my money on various dishes in restaurants. Initially I was tending to pay 18 dollars for the wonderful meal that I had, which I later found out to be 11 dollars only. As you can see I was bewildered of how such a quality meal could have such a small cost it it. The only concern is the space of the walkways to the counter, but this is insignificant compared to the quality of the food produced at the restaurant. I'll be sure to visit Angie's Kitchen in the(near)future.
Was going to change to 4 stars considering the lack of parking in the area but food still outmatched this statement.
Ezra
Great, warm and welcoming atmosphere. The Char Kuay Teo is delicious. I try to go here a couple times a week. Very reasonable prices as well.

Bottom line, I love this place.

Another gem in Singapore/Malaysian cuisine! Halal! Highly recommended!

I live just around the corner from Angie's Kitchen. I'd walked past the restaurant many times before and it had always looked pretty busy, so taking that as a good sign, I finally went to try it out today. When we walked in there was only one other table of people there and a middle aged man at the counter pointed us to a table. After we'd sat down, he came over and dumped the menus in the middle of the table without saying a word. It was not the most pleasant start to our lunch experience.

After we'd ordered our food to a much friendlier young man, our food came out surprisingly quick - within five minutes after ordering. My initial joy at the speed turned to dismay as the Braised Beef I'd ordered was put down in front of me. One big plate had a mound of rice on it, with one small slice of cucumber and tomato next to it; making it look very odd. Then came the bowl of Braised Beef, which had chunks of beef in a watery soup - completely different from the photo in the menu of thick, rich coloured soup. The taste of it was as unsatisfying as it looked and I felt rather sick afterwards. It made me not want to pay for my food, which I admit has never happened to me in a restaurant before.

The only good thing about the meal was the Ice Lemon Tea I ordered, which was homemade and refreshing.

My companion had the Nasi Lemak with chicken and said that it tasted better than mine, but was also quite average.

We both agreed that we should have just stayed at home and cooked our own lunch. Unfortunately I will not be visiting Angie's Kitchen again.

Angie's Kitchen is just round the corner from Mount St, and is a great little hidden away nook to get a quick Malaysian food fix. It's quite small, and was jam packed of people hunched over wooden tables, so it all felt quite cozy and busy. You know a place can't be too bad if it's full of people. I opt for the Kuay Teow Noodle Soup, which has smooth translucent rice noodles, chicken meat slices, fish balls, fish cake slices and strips of lettuce all in a piping hot broth swimming with black pepper. The pepper wasn't too spicy and actually really added to the dish as all the meat and fish involved are quite bland. I liked how the meats weren't too heavily seasoned or cured, so you could focus on the smooth texture and slight aroma of the noodles which were skilfully cooked al dente. Nothing too remarkable, but with a wallet-friendly cheap eats menu and a cozy atmosphere in a convenient location, it's ideal for popping by for a quick lunch.

Angie’s Kitchen was my local Malaysian haunt when I was employed at the university. It was a mere two blocks away and I could make it there, have delicious home-style Malaysian food and be back at my desk within the hour. Now that I’m a good 15 minutes away (not including finding a park, then dashing from the carpark), lunch at Angie’s Kitchen is a special trip or relegated to the weekend (which is not a bad thing, - there is a dish which is only available on Sundays, see below).

I assume that Angie is the auntie who occasionally pops her head out of the kitchen, but whoever she is, Angie is one talented chef. The quality can fluctuate at times; I’ve had great food, and I’ve had average dishes.

My regular dish is Nasi Lemak with beef rendang. The rice is cooked with coconut milk, with specks of blue (reminiscent of traditional nasi lemak which is tinged with the blue extract from bunga telang, blue pea flower) and is served with roasted peanuts, sambal bilis (anchovies cooked with chilli and spices) and half a boiled egg. The rendang is often excellent; the beef pieces being simmered in the rich spicy sauce for so long that they easily shred against a fork.

The Mamak Kuay Teow Goreng is the Malaysian Indian flat rice noodles wok-fried with prawns, chicken, tofu, beansprouts, potato and egg in sticky, tangy sauce.

A memorable dish is the Nasi Kandar. Nasi kandar is a special curry meal; the flavoured rice is served with fried chicken, curried fish, three vegetable sides, half a boiled egg and a poppadum. Unfortunately, this smorgasbord of flavours is only available on Sunday.

There are three versions of laksa on the menu. Two are curry laksa (chicken or seafood) which is in a spicy coconut soup. There is also a Penang laksa, which is a assam (tamarind) based soup.

I was introduced to at the assam ikan pari (stingray cooked in a tamarind gravy) at Angie's Kitchen, and have since, I have seen this dish appear on the menus at other Malaysian eateries. It's cooked to perfection here; the stingray flesh still has a slight bite to it, a perfect match to the spicy-sour gravy.

Angie's also does a range of Malaysian desserts and kuihs, which I'm usually too full to attempt. Reservations are recommended for the busy lunch trade. Angie's a great place to introduce Malaysian food to the uninitiated; it's a familiar cafe setting, there is a good range of dishes, and every dish is well presented.

http://easyfoodhacks.blogspot.in/2011/10/angies-kitchen-cbd-auckland.html
