Review Hoppers - Auckland Central

Hoppers Garden Bar is a hip and happening place to unwind. Great to find such a spot in Ponsonby, set away from the road in a quiet nook. The Octopus entree was a nice match with a glass of champagne. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable.

If you are looking for a nice relaxing afternoon this is the place to do it. There is a a huge selection of Gin to choose from. We had a couple of different gins and saw quite a few coming out. They are all beautifully made with interesting garnishes. There is definitely something there to suit everyone’s taste. We shared a couple of boa buns. The pork belly was to die for!!! The meat was tender and juicy with a super crispy crust. Highly recommend.

Nice place to spend your Tuesday night over a few glasses of wine. Friendly Staff. An interesting mix of post punk and dance music - from The Cure through Sade all the way to Gorillaz...

Been here twice this week and as much as I love Elmo’s I think this place is now my new fave out of the Ponsonby bars! Their Butterfly pea cocktail and their little octopus bites meal are to die for. Happy hour is great and their coconut marg is *chefs kiss*. My bank accounts gonna have to watch out because I’ve found a new place to enjoy some drinks and bites!

Beautiful place!! Friendly and helpful staff. Great open air environment. As per their website: Overnight grew a magical world from scratch, inviting all walks of life to experience, taste and observe weird and delightful things in its Peculiar Garden. Revealing 18 Craft Beer taps, fine wines, botanical gin cocktails and an exciting array of sharing plates, Hoppers was created solely with the adventurous in mind. So 'Step right up' for a delightfully Peculiar experience at HOPPERS.

The place was great, staff were awesome. One staff was really awesome, she help us out with one of the good drinks and waited for us to decide as it took us a long time in deciding. The food was excellent. Also, it had a live band when we came in so it was lively. Penny well spent. Definitely will come back for another night out.

Nice atmosphere to catch up with friends over drinks.. can get loud during Happy hours.. not suitable for those chilling out to chat and have a conversation, but a happening place if you wanna just absorb and feel 'younger'..

We’ve been to a Hoppers a couples of times now and have always loved it. We come here especially with our dog as the establishment doesn’t mind us sitting inside with him. Love their margarita hour, $14 jalapeño margaritas is a steal, I literally had 3 in one night. The only thing we noticed tonight that we disliked was that there was live music (Sunday night). Normally this wouldn’t bother me but it seemed unnecessarily loud. We ended up moving tables due to this and noticed a couple of others do the the same.

Excellent new place to Hangout with friends or few drinks after work, fantastic atmosphere, very nice deco, removable roof (can't wait for the summer), friendly staff, good cocktail menu, variety local New Zealand beers on taps, food menu is interesting, fusion Asian. Highly recommend, lunch dinner whenever.

Perfect lunch spot to enjoy summer weather starting to appear. In a sun-soaked courtyard with many quirky features (Encyclopaedia Britannica, quirky pictures), there are many craft beers to choose from and gins - probably wines as well, but this has always felt like a beer place to me. To eat there are many dishes for sharing such as dumplings, karaage chicken and tacos. Highly recommend the karaage chicken and the tacos, especially the tacos. The dumplings are usually very good, so will forgive that they were a little dry on top today. We could have easily whiled away the afternoon working our through the 15 tap beer options.

Always a great time and a great atmosphere at Hoppers, we tucked in to a few margaritas and chilli margaritas which were some of the best I’ve had. The staff are always friendly and the service is always top shelf. Highly recommend coming here next time you’re nearby. James Ashwin Kakapo Business Sales

Tonight we visited Hoppers for the first time We were a group of 9. The staff were very off hand. Had attitude, gave the impression they didn't want to be there and have us there too. Was a very disappointing experience. Wouldn't recommend it due to the staff attitude.

Very underrated place in terms of food! Reasonably priced and delicious. The fried cauliflower was insane!!! Fried chicken, soft shell crab bao and fries all delicious! And the cheese dip is the best!! Also a great aperol spritz and such chill fun vibes! Love this place! Only downfall is that service can be abit slow.

Toilets, toilets, toilets - when will hospitality joints get it right?!
I like Hoppers - when it's not crazy busy and you can't hear yourself think. The range of on tap beers is one of the best in Auckland, the food is up there and the decor is cool. But why oh why do the toilets in these sorts of places so often border on grotesque? Shared male/female? That was a nice try 10 years ago and let me make it clear - women don't want to use a toilet where a drunk man has been spraying around!! And 2 toilets for the whole place - really?? And when I was last there, the paper in the dispenser had run out and the replacement was lying on the floor, more than a little soiled by - you guessed it - the spray. Eeyew!!
If it wasn't for that disgusting experience, I would have rated the place far higher.

Went to this place last night.

Atmosphere was loud but good, did quieten down later.

Drinks menu was good, had a wine then ordered a bottle with dinner.

The food was very tasty - but very beige colour. Was hard to order a vegetable dish with anything green! Got the Karage Chicken, some dumplings (even the Vege one -still beige looking) and also the Cheese dip with corn chips.

The cheese dip was amazing! Definitely worth coming back for.

Also had the Roti donut for dessert and that was good too.

Overall we would go back for the Cheese dip and maybe a cheeky vino. Would try and order differently next time

This place is great for a casual drink/catch up on a summer's day. Bit chilly outdoors after the sun goes down but they have retractable roofs and outdoor heaters. Gets quite noisy though so not good if you're into a more relaxed quiet vibe.

Always really busy from 6pm onwards but all good as long as you're happy to share a table and wait a bit for/waved down service. Had a house sav with some of their items from the food menu - soft shell crab bao, kumara fries and karage chicken. The bao was really tasty but tiny for the price! Karage chicken was a bit lacking in flavour. Food seems to come out pretty quick once you place your order but it did take a while for us to do that as the waitresses were all swamped.

The decor was the coolest part of this bar, all done in a faux vintage garden bar look and a bunch of funky hilarious animal portraits on the walls, apparently all done by the owner.

Went to this place on a sunny Saturday arvo!! It was an absolute treat, I got a Margarita and my friend got an Aperol Spritz which were both delicious and decorated beautifully. The $16 Cheese Dip and was a little on the pricey side of things, but we were licking the bowl clean so didn’t phase us too much 😛. I also got the Pork Belly Bao Bun which tasted good but a little too much sauce, other wise would have been perfect. We had a really attentive waitress also who was very responsive and quick despite the full house!

We went here for lunch and it has a nice atmosphere and decor, concrete floor and high table seating with a cosy feel to it. They allowed our two dogs to come in which was really nice and service was very good. Small selection of some very nice gin and Tonics. Menu seemed like a good selection, for lunch we had the ribs and salmon curry and both of them were cooked just right.

Visited this place last Friday just after lunch time. It has the beginnings of a great local hangout...
However, the place crumbled under pressure and I wouldn't say it was that busy. It took a while for the food to come out, some things got forgotten and the lack of basics such as sufficient serviettes and sharing plates was a huge no-no. The cheese dip was just outright bad - overcooked, burnt liquid. I guess it does say sizzling... The rest of the food was pretty good - especially the ribs. The beer selection was great.
A bit of a hit-and-miss, perhaps just needs some time to get the bearings right. However, given the level of standard that is typically associated with Ponsonby, one wonders how and when.
