Really great food, they always make us an unparalleled chilli cheese garlic naan, nice to eat in a relaxed non-pretentious environment, my partner and I love it!

The people and service was awesome. I have never had such awesome Butter Paneer before until I tried Shahis Butter Paneer. Was just awesome. Thank you very much guys for making me feel welcome. 🙂 Will definitely recommend this place to friends and family.

Friendly service and delicious food. I have recently rediscovered this little Ponosnby gem. I ordered the chicken cashew (mild) and was really impressed. The new owners make a much better curry than the previous owners and I highly recommend the food. I have been back a few times and each time I have been happy.

Such good food. Looks tiny from outside but has 3 levels of seating and tables. Great service they were super friendly. All the curries are Gluten Free and cooked in individual pans.

I'm a local and a regular and love the Tadka Dhal and Prawn Malabari . Saag Panir is a favourite too. My kids love the butter chicken. The guys are always lovely and super quick for a pick up. Shahi is the best Indian food in NZ.

Just grabbed a small Lamb Rogan Josh to take away... and it was very good! Delicious aromatic flavours and the lean meat was cooked nicely. It was also a good portion size for a small female like me, but you'll definitely want a large if you are a hungry guy or if you want leftovers. It took around half an hour from the time I phone ordered, and I was only waiting for around 3mins when I came to pick up at the informed time. Overall I enjoyed the meal and am looking forward to trying out more at this little local spot :)

First time visiting this restaurant and we were blown away! Highly recommend the chefs special goat curry but we enjoyed all the food. Best indian restaurant. Great service, the couple working are very helpful and friendly. Will be our regular go to!

We love coming here - it’s very cute and cosy, the staff are wonderful, and the food is delicious!

I'm a regular, they have great food and super friendly staff :) Great location too. I cannot recommend the cheese garlic naan enough! Definitely recommended! Dining in is upstairs, I love it but not easy for people with reduced mobility.

The friendliest staff, such a good experience! Been to Shahi a number of times and tried various items on the menu, they’ve never disappointed. If you are living in the Herne Bay/Ponsonby area then lucky you. If you live far away then you should make the trip, it’ll be worth it.

Big indian cuisine fan, i really enjoyed my time here 😋

Food was absolutely amazing. Got a chicken cashew curry garlic naan and onion bahji. This is about the fourth Indian place in Auckland city I’ve tried and is the best so far!! Rice was perfectly cooked and fluffy. The garlic naan had a perfect amount of garlic butter flavour while remaining the perfect vessel for curry The curry was fantastic! Perfect balance and having the cashews blended into it gave it a higher depth of flavour and great texture They also have the best onion bahji I have ever had with an amazing sause to go with it!! Will defiantly be coming back weekly for a feed Great price great food great staff. Can’t recommend enough

Meat always very tender, sauces are yum, best Indian restaurant in Auckland, we go every few weeks

Have been going to Shahi for 15 years. Got the family favourites and it was amazing. Good portions and very tasty. Best Indian in Auckland with lovely friendly staff

Shahi are a phenomenal curry house. Whilst the menu appears small, what they do with with those staples is fantastic. The flavours are all well balanced and full, and you definitely need to try the Shahi naan. Sheena (hostess) made me a keema naan once that was on another level. They have this loft with relaxed seating that takes this from a formal meal, too a relaxed indulgence of the senses. Get yourself to Shahi, your mouth will than you for it.

I’ve ordered takeaway from Shahi a few times recently, having just moved to the area last month. Both times the food was very tasty, and a good portion size. The staff were also nice to deal with and the orders were ready promptly. Will be a regular choice.

Amazing Butter Paneer. The best I have tasted in Auckland. Highly recommended.

Tasty. Delicious Indian curries that you would love to have again and again. Awesome, friendly and welcoming staff.. 5 stars from your regular customer :)

Highly recommended. We've been to Shahi a few times and keep coming back for more. The curries are delicious (perfect balance of spice, coconut cream, sweetness and gravy) and are so reasonably priced.

I ordered the mild dhal with rice and a garlic cheese naan bread. The food was delish, and it was the nicest, bestest, most delicious naan I had ever tasted! I enjoyed sitting on the cushions on the floor and also had the option of the seats on the upper level. Overall, the food was yummy, and the service great! Would recommend. Thank you guys :-)

I ordered vegetarian takeaway. Palak paneer, roti, rice n samosa. It tastes really nice. Samosa was different but tastes really nice. Roti was awesome but I asked for plain n they gave me buttered one. Palan paneer was good. Overall good experience.

Great little Indian restaurant in Herne Bay. Beautiful North Indian curries prepared from scratch while you wait. The cheese filled Naan is just delicious. Won't burn a hole in your pocket either!

Every time I buy curry and rice from this place, it's been really tasty, awesome delicious flavored curries and lovely, friendly staff with a smile :)
whether it would be dine-in, takeaway or delivery, I would recommend Shahi (Herne Bay, Ponsonby).
Well cooked food and food is delivered while it's still hot :)

Five stars to the chef and staff :)

not a great dining experience. felt abandoned while they rushed takeaway orders. one curry way over salted, the other just flavourless. would avoid

Below average dining experience. Dry, tasteless naan bread, tasted like it was from a microwave. “Large” butter chicken had 5 pieces of chicken. Not worth it for the taste or the value, very disappointed.

Had takeaway from Shahi today .Tandoori chicken which was hard as rock, tasted so bland and obviously old chicken.Ordered butter nan which turned up very rubbery with no butter and I could clearly say they took it out of the fridge and heated it before packing.Jalfrazi chicken was the only thing we managed to keep it down. This was the worse indian takeaway me and my family ever had .Definitely not going back to that place ever.I hope they will rise up with a new management and of course a good chef.

My husband and I used to love Shahi. We have lived in different areas over the years but were always happy to travel to eat there. Unfortunately, we have had 2 bad experiences in the last couple of months. First after raving about this place all the time I took some of my colleagues there to find the food wasnt as good as it used to be. Didn't look or taste the same and wasn't served in the usual plates... so I really wondered if the place had changed chef because even the colour of the curries werent the same. I was served a flat beer and when I mentioned it to the waiter he insisted for ages he had just opened it instead of just changing it. And now my husband has just brought a $41 take away consisting of 2 curries which were ok but not worth the price paid (very food courty) and a very overcooked and dry nan, almost felt like it was old. So very dissapointed that it's not what it used to be. Will have to find a new place.

A very disappointing experience tonight. I used to buy my takeaways from Shahi Herne Bay often and I have also popped in for the odd meal over the past few years. Previous to tonight, I have always found it a pleasant experience. Unfortunately, the hard sell tonight on everything on the menu set a sour tone from the beginning - and although the meal was fine (barring the buttered naan without butter), when the waitress opened an extra bottle of sparkling water at our table which we had not ordered and began pouring it despite our protestations that we hadn't ordered it, we decided never to come back. It's the little things that count - and honesty and integrity should be high priorities on the list for a restaurant that wants repeat business

Shahi what a disappointment very average if not below average Indian takeaway. I ordered Chicken Jalfrazi and a Garlic Naan the Chicken Jalfrazi was nothing short of average and as for the Naan as good as enedible, dry rubbery. Shahi was a great place a few years back I hope that they up their game soon. I did by the way email them directly but they failed on replying, so this implies to me that they also don't care to much about their local customers. Wouldn't return in a hurry.

I'm a regular at Shahi Jervois Road now, as I've had such a great experience with eating there. We often order takeaways as the Butter Chicken here is the best I've ever had - not too sweet, but full of flavour. But better than that, the staff always recognise me and are so friendly! They often recognise my voice (and regular order) on the phone and are lovely and generous, often treating me with free poppadoms or delicious desserts. They were also very kind when I had a group of friends go there for dinner on my birthday - a number of my friends had not shown up, so there were less of us than I'd booked for, and we were a bit late too. But they didn't say a word about it and were friendly as ever, even though I'm sure it was very annoying. Would recommend Shahi 110%, for the lovely people and the great food!

We had Indian takeaways last week as Shahi is only a few hundred metres from our house. I ordered the lamb rogan josh and my partner had butter chicken, and we shared a naan bread. I was a bit disappointed they couldn't do any of their curries without dairy, which limited me to only a few options. I've never had an issue with this at any other Indian restaurant I've ordered from. The curries came out super quick, however I really didn't enjoy the rogan josh, the spices used were so overpowering and all I could taste was cardamom (and cumin?). The butter chicken was pleasant but not the nicest my partner had eaten. The naan bread was premade and was quite doughy which was also disappointing. If we were to return I definitely wouldn't re-order the rogan josh.

Great hot butter chicken, love their curries and naan. Perfect takeaway food when we lived nearby. The Remuera branch is good too, reliable & reasonable.

10 guys walking into a Indian restaurant can be quite daunting. The staff handled the situations really well, with great beer, great popadoms and a curry with too flavor with naan bread to match.

Super tasty!!!

Was in a hurry, so went to the nearest place to get takaways, and got a takeaway chicken mughlai. I wish I didn't bother. So many amazing food places in ponsonby and I ended up with a flavourless, spineless, over prices curry with gristly rubbery chicken. And another $5 for a chewy soggy reheated garlic naan. Don't bother going here.

Best butter chicken in Auckland.

Randomly tried out this place tiny hole in the wall but boy they do a good curry!

Incredibly friendly welcoming staff. Highly recommend this place for Indian takeaways.

My new local!

I've just got home after a meal at Shahi and felt compelled to write a review as it was so good. Great service, very cute dining area upstairs away from the hustle and bustle of the busy kitchen and some of the best Indian food I have had in a long time. Really tasty dishes with fresh ingredients. I recommend the dumplings for dessert, unusual but super yummy.

A great hidden gem: away from the hustle and bustle of Ponsonby, I love the atmosphere in this restaurant. The service is quick and precise, the food is delicious and fairly priced. However, what really makes me come back here (a part from the mixed platter - awesome) is the genuine kindness of the staff.

The people are friendly and the food is good and well priced. I have had takeaways from here several times since moving to Auckland. Never eaten in so not sure what the restaurant is like. Really cannot believe the first review for this place as they have always been so friendly and the food is good. This a good local indian in Herne Bay.

Just moved into the neighbourhood recently and as we were assessing the menu in the doorway of Shahi, a passerby recommended us to try Shahi. It has good vegetarian options and was reasonably priced. We enjoyed our meals and have been back again I'd give it more 3.5 stars than 4, but I guess you have to round up your ratings here.

Can't comment about the "dining experience" (not sure if I can quite believe the other review for this place as they were very friendly to us) but as it is within walking distance this is my go to place for a takeaway curry on a Friday night.

Never ever dining at this place!!
My partner and i thought we would have dinner at Shahi,we both walk in I greet the guy over the counter with a no reply blank stare, I asked table for 2 please and the guy quickly response was "YOU KNOW IT'S GONNA COST YOU ALOT OF MONEY"? at first I thought it was a joke but he had a dead stare in his eye, I was so shocked I asked him,um what? He then goes do you have enough money to dine here? I looked at my partner and I said to him, let's go not dining here as we walked out he still kept starring at us from afar. I have no idea what his probelm was, but he made sure we weren't gonna dine there. Will not dine at this place ever.
