Review Fort Street Union - Auckland Central

Mario
The look of the whole bar and restaurant is just astonishing. The food is superb and the selection of wine and cider ist also really good. Service is fast and really nice and always open for a chat.
Cass Toyne
Great spot, outdoor and indoor bar, food drink selection. Goes off Friday and Saturday.
Geoff Wilson
Love the wood fired pizza dough and open-roof seating, but otherwise it turns into a hostel bar focusing on cheaper, basic beer specials and pool tables which are often broken, bent cues, and missing/duplicate balls.
Kevin en Annelieke
Really good and quick service. Pizzas were tasty and they had a good deal on some pizzas. The beer we had, black dog brewery one, was excellent. We could try it first which was a smart move. Interior is really cosy. Definitely recommend!

This is a nice bar and restaurant. Very nicely located on Fort Street just off Queen's Street. They do good valued jugs (if you stay in Nomad's next door can get a discount) and on Sunday huge pizzas for cheap. The decor is nice, spacious, multiple bars, good staff. It has everything you want.
James Muir
Great atmosphere and amazing staff! The pizzas are to die for and the rooftop deck is a great place to chill after work or party late in to the night. Definitely worth checking out the $5 Heinekens during happy hour(s) 4-7pm!

Fort Street Union has a really good atmosphere and friendly staff members. Great place to go for after work drinks as they have happy hour specials. The pizzas taste really good too! They have a beer garden which is great for summer nights and those that smoke, as well as a pool table for those who want to do more than just sit and drink.

Great place for a drink after work. Only downside is the open air area when it rains
Darren Keane
Good selection of drinks and food. The pizzas are large and really tasty, highly recommend! Nice outside seating area on a sunny day. If wet, there is lots of seating inside.
Crytos
Great venue and good food. Came here twice in a week and the waiter here (red headed, British accent) is superb. Atmosphere is good too, highly recommend for a work lunch/after work drink. Good lunch specials too.
Mari Järvinen
Nice looking, atmospheric place. Lunch time on Sun, basically empty. Friendly girl behind the counter. Good tap selection (3 ciders too!). Food: pizza ok, but a bit disappointing; the sauce a bit too sweet and scarse. Peking chicken wrap not quite what described on the menu, but pretty ok tasting. The crispy noodle salad with it was just dresses with sweet chili sauce, not what it said on the menu... A bit of a wait on the food too...

My hubby and I had a lovely time on Sunday morning at FSU, watching the rugby and having a great lunch! Awesome atmosphere! Great place! A hidden gem in the city! :) Thanks FSU! Will definately be back!

Busy busy pub on Friday night, then it was a bit quieter later on, I’ll be back

Thumbs up for the scrumptious pizzas and affordable beers! Love the cosy yet happening atmosphere of the bar with good music and friendly staff. Our group was even invited to participate in a pool match and won $100 to spend at the bar! What an awesome experience for our first time in Auckland city. Highly recommended!

Had my mums 60th Birthday at Fort Street Union on Friday. Sadly it was raining so we couldn’t use the rooftop but they quickly reserved some tables inside and we were good to go. Food was great and good music too. Had a great time thanks!

I love starting at this bar...been going for the last three weeks now and not once has it failed me...music is on point on both sides, and customer services from both bartenders and waiters were excellent...very friendly atmosphere and my friends had a very good time. Thanks heaps!

My companies end of year lunch was held year, my colleagues pre ordered me a vegan meal and what came out but a puny below average Greek salad. They could not adapt a single thing on the menu to suite my needs despite preordering and the cocky waiter told me he thought salad greens is all vegans eat. I'll never go again and I will tell everyone I know how disgusting thy are.
Nichola Hogan
Great atmosphere. Great food. We arrived during happy hour and enjoyed $5 beers. We'll be back

Seriously need some air conditioning!! Hard to hang loose in that heat

Service was very very very poor completely understaffed. We did get lovely pizza eventually but wouldn't go back. Shame.
Gordon Peel
Nice atmosphere, friendly staff and good food. Would happily go again.

Today we went for lunch to celebrate my daughter's birthday. There was no indication from the staff that there would be any delay. We arrived at 1.10. At 1.50 we had to leave as we had still not received our order (in spite of the restaurant being almost empty). The waitress said this was OK! There was no apology forthcoming until I asked for one. In the end we both ended up eating sandwiches. Will not be going there again any time soon

Great atmosphere, better staff. Ace place to unwind

Great burgers and atmosphere! Good place to meet friends!

After buying jugs of house beer for $18, I then discovered a poster in the loo that advertises them for $10. Would be nice if your staff could rectify the overcharges.

Great place!! Always a good vibe!! Tasty food and great customer service! Great place to catch up for drinks and a fun nite!! Highly recommend this place!

I had a great yarn with the bouncer semi intoxicated while waiting for an Uber once. Great lad - just like the food and service you'll find inside. The deck is quieter than inside if you're trying to chat. The pizzas are decent too.

The place is good to eat and hygiene is good too . Must say staff and cleaners do a good job . It’s cheap and can also play pool which is awesome
Good beer, good music, lovely ambiance perfect for a cold pilsner after a long damn day.
Never not had a good time at this place, that's a fact.
AucklandEater
Have been here a few times and it has a fun ambience. Echoing others, it's definitely very casual and a great hang-out spot. Therefore, don't expect attentive service or anything like that! Although last time I was there with a friend we enjoyed the service of the tiny blonde waitress - super friendly and took our orders happily + on time (not always the case here).

Food portions are great and the pizzas are tasty and always fresh. Price is reasonable and in summer this is a nice spot to enjoy some fresh air and a casual work or after-work meal. Love the litre jugs of sangria too, beautiful to look at and beautiful to drink!
Ellynn
Found this place because of a friend. Ever since I have known this place, I only go here for drinks. The place is packed and the service is great. Bartenders were great as well. It was nice seeing the pool table and the extended outdoor bar for a change. If you want to just hang out, go here! I took my parents here to hang out with my bf and it worked out well. ;)

Went here with a friend for late lunch and we were expecting that everything in the menu was available only to find out that the pizza isn't available until after 4pm. But regardless, it was ok and the food was just above average and the service was really prompt and friendly so overall it was a good experience.

Will come back another time and maybe after 4pm because we really wanna try their pizza that people have been raving on about.

We went there for a group lunch. Since there were 25 people in the group, we pre ordered our food. When we got there the place was pretty empty, we took our seats and the waitress took our drinks order.

The service was friendly and efficient. The food were reasonably priced, and pretty good portioned. I ordered the steak sandwich, unfortunately my steak was stone cold... i was not impressed to be honest. Otherwise everything else were pretty good...

One of the best pizza restaurants I've been to in Auckland. Not only were the pizzas cheap they were also delicious and the portions are reasonably big. The pizzas are definitely made fresh, and the texture of the crust is pretty good. We had "Sunday roast" and "the union". The Sunday roast was my favourite as it had a balance of sweet and sour with a touch of saltiness on the crust. Also we went on thursday night which all the pizzas were half price regardless of the size. However, the big disappointment was that we waited about 30 minutes for two medium sized pizzas. The environment is good though - very lively. $40 for two is ideal.

Taste - 8/10
Ambience - 8/10
Size - 7.5/10
Service - 4/10
Price - 7/10

Awesome place to have pizzas and stuff chicken is quite amazing.....talking about drinks have nice varieties of beers and ciders but wanted to have some Cocktail so I approached Manager on duty AIMEE and asked for very basic Cocktail NEGRONI but her reply was what is that.....????
Listening to this I was apalled with the MOD's language towards customer. Will think twice to visit if I see around her....!
I came here with my friend for lunch today, as I read about the $14 lunch specials.

Service was non existent, everyone working looked so bored like they didn't want to be there, no smiles and the energy was just really low.

We sat down and a lady said she'll get someone to take our orders because she was going on a break. We waited but no one came so we just went to the counter and ordered.

I chose the Portuguese chicken sandwich which came with wedges and my friend ordered the fish and chips. The chicken sandwich was ok, no interesting flavours or sauces, I added hot sauce to make it enjoyable. The wedges were quite stale and didn't taste very fresh.

Good value for money but the food and service is really average.

Fort Street Union have a cheap lunch menu where everything is only $14. I had the Peking chicken wrap with hoisin and plum sauce, cucumber, chinese cabbage, and fried shallot. I paid $3 extra for the crisply noodle noodle salad of green onion, mint, coconut and Red Nam Jhim sauce. The noodles were delicious - I know it was the sauce and the sugar, but I could have done with a whole plate of just these and done away with the wrap - I was pretty much full the time I finished with the noodles! I didn't like the wrap as much, didn't find it as fresh and flavoursome - but maybe it was because I was already full! But overall was a good value meal for a weekday lunch, and the outdoor setting is nice if the weather is alright.
Ffionachua
I ordered the Peking chicken wrap and it was quite tasty. I enjoyed my lunch although was a bit disappointed it wasn't in the typical Peking duck style. Nevertheless good food. My mates tried some of the other lunch options on the menu, and although I didn't get to try it, they looked good!

The setting is quite nice, although it can be quite hot and stuffy during mid day. Nothing a good beer or lemonade can't solve though.

This place is good for lunch and afternoon drinks, food is just ok but the venue is really cool with an outdoor garden bar.

Good place mates and watch sport on a summers day

Fort Street Union is popular among backpackers for its rooftop bar and wood fired pizzas. This gastro bar has plenty of atmosphere – it is spacious, noisy and bustling with life. But if you’re going here for the “world famous” pizzas, prepare to be a little disappointed. With the Tuesday $1-a-slice special, you’re really getting what you pay for – a cold, hard slice of what once used to be a pizza. The made-to-order pizzas are, of course, a lot better (and by that I mean decent). We ordered an Easy Italian and a Champagne Darling. The toppings were good and generous. But the taste of these was overwhelmed by the thick doughy crusts which just left a bad taste in the mouth.

Sizeable pub grub for a decent price.

Coming in for a lunch to catch up with some friends we ordered a fish and chip, burger and risotto with duck slices.

Our orders certainly took awhile but to Fort Street Unions credit their food tasted fresh, wholesome and flavourful.

Showstopper: the risotto was fantastic and the burger was a miniature beast to handle. Beer batter fries were on point!

Grade: B+

Love the Fort Street Union Burger! The Bun is crispy and the beer batterd fries are really crunchy. I will recommend this to anyone who loves burger.

Had a Yellow fin tuna with a poached egg & some veggie for lunch. My wife had a beef burger with mozzarella cheese & fries. Both were good. The fries were golden brown crispy - a big thumb up! Coffees were OK. (Food - 3.5/5; Service - 3/5; Ambience - 3/5)
The British Kiwi Foodies
Yummy wood fired pizzas in one of the best settings in the city! We have had the You Norker, Tandoori Chicken and Mexican Hombre pizzas so far and the fries are amazing! We love the open roof seating area, friendly and efficient service and delicious food. One of our faves!
Charlotte Gibbs
Great pizzas and $14 lunch, value for money!

Primo spot for lunch or after work drinks and nibbles with the awesome roof top deck and bar.

Great way to start a night and great way to end a night too with a boogey, DJs keep the place pumping!

Love the atmosphere here. So casual and relaxing. Beautiful set up and great customer service. Love the food but pizza was a bit burnt. Would go again :)
Nic Leary
Nice atmosphere, however ordered the pumpkin and goats feta risotto and after 30 minutes was delivered a mushroom risotto with lemon zest and pepper. Wasn't what I ordered and when I spoke to the waitress she said that they ran out of pumpkin. Would've preferred to know this before I waited half and hour. Had to eat my replacement meal after my partner had finished his meal, restaurant should've covered the cost of the meal after this ordeal however no offer was made. Also bugs behind our booth.

This place is amazing on a clear day. It would probably be awesome on a clear evening as well. It was our last full day together and we weren't sure where to go. The pressure to make everything as perfect as possible! A suggested this place, because it was the only place out of our three shortlisted eateries to which I hadn't been. An old favourite or a new place? A new place, it was.

I've been a couple times. Food is great I've tired the steak and the stuffed chicken breast which are both pretty sweet and the nachos are really good, portion sizes are big which I love and its good vibe for drinks and/or food. Sometimes has live music playing which is cool.

Fort Street Union was a successful and satisfying choice for a casual Sunday catch up- serving up great food, awesome service and a fun atmosphere.

First up was the Sunday Roast pizza featuring roast lamb, potatoes and mint sauce. The flavour combo was spot on and the lamb came in generous chunks across the pizza. Next was the Chicken Monty- a tasty heap of chicken, brie and sundried tomato with a sour cream sauce. This was accompanied by chunky wedges and great yarns from our server.

We finished the meal with the chef's special and our waiter's recommendation- claiming that we definitely won't be disappointed. Out came a dessert pizza topped with baked apple, chocolate sauce and finished with ice cream. Needless to say we were delighted, and very far from disappointed.

Keen to go back again and props to the service- which just added something extra to the experience.

Been there a few times now ... usually I don't re-visit restaurants or bars because I'm disappointed by the service! This says a lot about Fort Union ... the service beats anything I've experienced in NZ (even most expensive restaurants!) and the Woodfired pizza is the best I've ever had ... together with some amazing deals on beer, a relaxed friendly atmosphere, and decent menu makes this an awesome place to dine and relax!

Highly recommended!

Although the atmosphere is pretty darn good, I unfortunately really didn't enjoy my Seared Tuna Salad which is on the Lunch Menu. It sounded simply divine when I read it on the menu before ordering.

When I received it, it just looked like a massive bowl of mesclun salad leaves with some cold slices of tuna, fresh tomato pieces, beans, a poached egg (probably the best part of the dish) and a few pieces of cold potato pieces tossed throughout it. The menu specifically said hot potato, and it wasn't even warm.

I duno... I just really didn't expect the dish to be cold, and my friend who was with me ordered exactly the same thing which was also cold. She didn't even eat it, just picked at the tuna pieces and pushed the dish aside.

Two others at our table ordered the risotto and the fish and chips which the both loved but I definitely won't be going back to order the Tuna any time soon. The flavours were yummy, but im a little bit disappointed.

Gotta say I love the Union for it pizzas great service and open roof top area with the good dj who gets the crowd up and going for a laugh as its more of a drinks bar than a club. Pretty handy location.
Kurt McAlpine
Food is pretty average. Drinks are really expensive. Staff are slow and impolite. Also there are cockroaches crawling around the dining area.
Joshua Free
The food tasted good but is expensive and the customer service is terrible. There are also cockroaches behind the booths at the back of the restaurant, which staff seemed unconcerned about when we pointed it out to them.
Davey Schilling
Fort Street Union has a good looking menu with many delicious pizzas. They had a deal with 1 dollar per slice, so I ordered some of them. The pizza was baked too long and not very tasty except for the margarita, which was pretty good. One downside was that there were some cockroaches running over the brick walls next to us. If you do not sit close to those walls you have a cool ambiance and if you buy the regular pizzas this might be a good place. My night however wasn't.

$14 lunch menu!. Great place to meet friends for lunch - this is our usual 'go-to' choice. Their $14 lunch menu is really reasonable for what you get. Awesome big outdoor area to eat or have a drink in the sunshine on a good day (one of Auckland city's awesome secret spots - I don't think a lot of people realise it's there!). Always friendly staff.
Daiana Cordoba
I've always been here for dinner..it's a cool and relaxed place. The battered fries are to die for. Pizzas are also really good, with a good selection
Andrea
Visited this place for lunch, and ordered from the $14 lunch menu.

Food: I ordered a Porturgese chicken sandwich and replaced my wedges with chips. My boyfriend ordered a beef burger which I did not try. The chicken sandwich was extremely disappointing. The chicken did not taste like it was roasted, just merely tossed in the sauce. Presentation of the food was sloppy as well. The portion was really small, and given, this was the lunch menu, but I felt that they could have done better with other places having cheaper and bigger servings of lunch. However, the chips were good.

Service: Great service, the waitress was very friendly and attentive.

Overall: Although the chips were good, the rest of the meal was edible, but not great. I wouldn't return for lunch again.

thegrapefruitfoodie.wordpress.com

Fantastic from the moment we stepped foot into the place. Greeted by the Management at the door and great service continued to the bar staff. Throw in a great DJ and a superb atmosphere - this place has it all. Fantastic mix of people from all walks of life all there to enjoy themselves. We will be back again. .. And again.... An again for good measure. Cheers
Just not their pizza. Unless you're drunk - then I doubt you even care!

Pizza decent, nice atmosphere (lots of funky backpackers hanging around, since Nomads is next door), also lots of suits after work, if that's your thing ;). However, a little confused by tap beer situation - Export Gold on tap? The Black Dog Chomp thing was nice, though. If the tap beer sitch improves, I would be happier. It's also a handy location for groups.

I loved this place the first time I went there. After I went back for a few lunches it wore off. Service is great.... but each time I eat it leaves me flat. I have to say the chips are primo though...

Came here with some friends for an afternoon feed of pizza and a few drinks. The staff were nice, the prices were reasonable and the pizza was freaking delicious (and massive).

I really liked the ambiance of the place too, it has a good look and there was a pleasant crowd.

I'd definitely recommend it as a good place to spend an afternoon with a few friends.

Saturday 6th July 2013 - Beware of power hungry bouncers.

Came here for my very good friends 31st birthday - was dressed nicely in good jeans, tidy collared shirt and a 'cheesecutter' hat.
No signs on the way in that say no hats. Bouncer checked me out on the way in and said you're sweet.

Had two beers then was removed with force (left bruising) from the bar for wearing a hat. Presumably because the bouncer was on a power trip and there was no drunk idiots to chuck out so he went for the guy in a hat.

In my opinion - spend your money somewhere else. The ten people that left with me did.
Sarah Linder
Partner and I went there on Sunday evening, not too busy. Was seated right away and drink order taken.
Sunday they do not serve from Mains menu, but still offer vast selection of pizzas and sides.
Ordered the Mexican Hombre Pizza, Beer Battered Fries and Crumbed chicken. Plus 2 jugs of Beer :)
Awesome food, and great price. Used an Ent Book Voucher so was very happy with end price.
Great pub atmosphere, we sat in the Garden bar, not too cold for June. Would def go back here.

On Wednesday 27th March my friends and I went to this bar during our lunch break.
1. Firstly after waiting 30 minutes we found out that they misplaced our food order, so we had to re-order

2. Then they brought out the wrong order

3. The steak sandwich contained fridge cold & RAW meat (see photo in their photo gallery)

4. Had to go back to work hungry

The managers solution was that he wasn't going to charge me for the meal. What a JOKE!!! Did he really think I was going to pay for a meal that I didn't eat and for a piece of Raw steak especially when I asked for medium to well.

Would never go to this place again!!!

What a great little find, upstairs on fort street would normally have walked past but we had a treat me voucher.. very glad I brought this, walk up the stairs to an awesome bar with a really cool outside rooftop bar, we had a lovely few hours here and the service was exceptional, the staff were fun and friendly and did an amazing job. The pizza we had was loaded with yummy and toppings and tasted really good.
Tracey
This is one of my fav places to go, for either lunch or dinner. The food is good, although I hear the menu is changing or has changed (have to go back and check). I like that you can choose between the garden top area or hang out in the back inside.

Went back in last week (nov) and service was really slow for lunch time. Better to be seated in the garden bar area.
Robert Fruin
Very impressed with the food and the reasonable cost. Both my wife and i came away feeling very satisfied and content.
Lang Ea
nice atmosphere, however i wouldn't recommend ordering the chicken burger-$20 for a small bun burger with dry up salad leaves, and bits of chicken. the chips on the side tasted better then the main/burger. it shud only be a $10 meal if that.
very disappointed with the meal.
NYNB
Came here on Valentines Day for lunch, great menu and pretty cheap to average prices. Very filling, great spaces and a nice clean crisp atmosphere. Would definitely recommend if you don't mind spending between $20-30 on lunch once in a while.

Love this place. Awesome casual atmosphere with a great outside(ish) garden bar. Lovely to kick back and have a drink and they do great food as well.

Awesome service for a bar. They'll take your order from your table and bring you the drinks etc.

Food is really reasonably priced and a really good meal for the price you pay! Definately worth a visit!
James Reid
I loved this place! Great drinks, cool atmosphere, and awesome bartenders. I originally tried to get a reservation at some other place but the time I wanted wasn't available,so I wandered down to Fort St Union.

The bar is amazing and the chicken was the best I have ever had. Next time I am trying the burger... it looked amazing!!
Emma
Is it possible to give this place zero stars? If I could, I'd give it negative stars.

Revolting food and pointless service. Had to pay for a meal that was really inedible and arrived well after everyone else's.

Fort St Union - rather go to McDonald's.
Sarah Ratyn
Great looking bar with an good laid-back atmosphere and excellent service.
The waitress was very friendly and even introduced herself. Our drinks and meals came out quickly and were delicious.
We will definetly be returning for more.

This is one of my favourite bars in Auckland. Mainly as it's off the beaten track but right in the centre of the city. They have a great garden bar which is inside a hollowed out part of the building which means the roof is all open yet you have old Victorian windows beside you. So can feel a little odd but such a great atmosphere. The staff are all helpful and fun. Not to mention their drink prices are decent. Which is good for being in the city. Good place to start your night out. All the usual drinks are available and their music is always pretty decent. Good run of old and new tracks! None of this over the top repetitive music every bar seems to play these days.
