We have frequented The Flaming Onion for some time now. The burgers are always hot, well seasoned and a good size. The chips are crunchy but they’re all so stubby! At $10.90 for a chicken burger, I feel this is slightly below the market pricing for a similar size burger. I haven’t tried any of the bigger burgers but they look really nice! Note, they charge for paywave here so keep that in mind.

Best burgers in Auckland for me... small and good burger store, not many seat available but perfect for a take away... service was so much friendly and kind but I was surprised with their burgers... one of my friends insisted to go there and my first impression was not pretty good... but when I tasted The Smokey One I change my mind... perfect burger with caramelized onions, mayo, butters bacon... amazing... fries were tasty as well, so were the onion rings... fresh and warm... I totally enjoyed my food there and I can’t wait to go again soon... 5 stars but if it was possible I would rated them 10... they are doing a great job...

Ordered 2 burgers, chips and potato rosti. The chicken burger was good but the 2nd burger wasnt worth what I spent. First off they got the order wrong and gave us a steak fold instead of a beef and cheese .Even though the steak was cooked well the bun was soggy and couldn't taste the mustard at all. Was really unpleasant to eat. The agria chips were soggy to, maybe 5 or so chips were crisp, another disappointment. But the potato rosti and Aoli was very delicious. 50/50 chance I'd go back or even recommend this place to others.

Absolutely appalling!!! Cost $60 for 2 burger chips and 3 fish. Fish was too greasy can't even eat it, chips are stale and hard and not hot. Burgers are just ok. I feel ripped off and won't ever be going back to that place. Rang manager they seemed disinterested and said they'd only re-cook it but the food was too gross to even want it again. Rip Off place

Great service and friendly staff, however they did not deliver on quality. Burger was very very dry and bland, curly fries were soft and under seasoned, the only saving grace was their not too bad onion rings. May have just been a bad experience, so may try again just in case ��

Have I told you before that the best burgers can be found in New Zealand? I am pretty sure about that since I had tried many burgers in my life, from different cities worldwide, I don’t want to boast about my travels (personal and work) but to assure you of that statement I was lucky enough to have visited 34 countries and roughly 150+ cities to date, of which I try to sneak in some burgers here and there. While there are good burgers in those countries, I still find the ones in New Zealand way much better, not all of them of course and this regardless of how cheap or how expensive they were, honestly some cheap ones are better than your $100+ burgers. I even tried McDonald’s quarter pounder and Burger Kings whopper range in most of those countries and nothing compares to our quarter pounder and whopper here. Do I rest my case? I hope some well-travelled follower that had tried New Zealand burgers stand by me and comment below.

I’ve been to The Flaming Onion three times now and all times the burgers were cold, even after having to wait an additional 10-15mins twice for them to prepare the order. The sides are amazing, especially the onion rings, and the latest burger I got, the Texan Chiky, had great flavour too but unfortunately was cold so not as enjoyable as should have been. I really hope you can remedy this as it puts a damper on your food and I’m reluctant to return.

I previously wrote a fairly scathingly negative review of Flaming Onion, based on an experience I had last week of an average burger. Based on this review, the owner reached out to me to try and remedy the situation. He offered a free meal as a ‘second chance’ to try and improve our experience, and we took him up on it to see if there was any improvement. Our first meal had dry and overcooked patties, and unappealing buns. Second burger, the patty was not overcooked (a touch pink in the middle, nice to see), but still quite tough/dry – we were surprised as were expecting a juicy wagyu burger. Not sure what’s going on there, but neither of the sets of burgers we’ve had so far have been juicy. Might be the quality of the beef, or the way it is being prepared. The buns were still a little average, sorry. I’ve pulled up my rating from 1 star to 3 stars to reflect the owner’s efforts to right the situation by providing a free replacement meal. However, I’m still not convinced the food as good as previous reviews claim. In addition, the food should be consistent, so our first meal really should have been to a higher standard, and second was only marginally better. I wouldn’t pay this much for these burgers, and I still wouldn’t recommend their burgers generally. *Curly fries delicious in both first and second visits. Yum

Perhaps it was lockdown that got my hopes up, but flaming onion ain’t what it used to be. When you’re paying premium prices (+$15 for a burger) you naturally have high expectations. We were majorly let down by the online ordering process and confused staff. (We were the only people waiting at the time) Our burgers were soggy and cold as were the sides and we’re only a 10min drive away. The onion rings and kumara fries were inedible as they were so heavily coated in salt, curly fries soft and the only good item in our whole order were regular chips. We wanted to support local but can’t justify spending this kind of money for food destined for the bin.

Purchased the veggie burger and a Texan chicken burger. Both were dry and flavourless, and smaller than we expected for the price. Salad portions were tiny - just a few little strands of shredded lettuce and a single tomato slice - which didn’t help with the burger’s lack of texture and dryness. Ended up having to fill them up with more ingredients from the fridge to try get a meal out of it. Disappointing, wouldn’t bother trying again.

The most expansive burger menu I’ve seen in any burger joint. I got the Highwayman? (Beef) and a chicken burger with maple bacon and buttermilk chicken. Also kumara chips and fish. If you eat in they serve it all on proper dinner plates. There’s a fish aquarium shop next door and potential for scenics 🏙 how goood

I get flaming onion quite regularly and the burgers are soooooo yummy - so many options and great flavours and good size!! Only issue is that sometimes the burgers seem a little rushed/scrappy. But tbh will always be my go to for a yummy burger!!

One of my favorite hole-in-the-wall joints on the Northshore... Ordered my Diablo waygu burger to-go, and was definitely worth the price. My wife had the gluten free veggie burger and enjoyed it. Only downside is that if you eat-in you will walk out smelling like a fry pan... So if you’re going there on a first date you’ve been warned! Great spot though.

Been eating here for years and never disappointed me. I'm very lucky this is my local. The burgers are giagantic (I can only eat half at a time) and very creative. Go for the burger of the week, it's totally worth it! They are also masters at frying things. The chips and kumara chips are fantastic. It's a bit pricy than your usual fish and chip shop chips, but very good quality and decently portioned. The potato chips and crunchy on the outside and fluffly in the inside. Kumara chips are almost lightly battered and actually crunchy. Not at all like your average floppy soft kumara chips. The onion rings are quite good too. The only thing to be aware is that it can be positively packed. Calling them ahead of time to pre order is recommended.

If I didn't prepare myself which burger to order beforehand, my decision making would take longer than one burger can be cooked and ready. Thanks to Zomato which providing menues. I picked up a burger called 'The Boss' among lots of other burgers which have unique names. The waiting time was for around 5mins. The size of every ingredients were smaller than expected. When I found only one piece of 🥑 in it, I felt a little bit sad. But I liked the thickness and the firmness of the meat pattie. The taste was not so impressive because there were not much sauce to make it flavorsome.

Decided to try this place out, being rated as one of the best burger places in auckland. It did live up to its words. Food delicious, spicy chicken burger was actually spicy how I like it. Customer service was excellent very helpful. Lady behind counter came out to clean tables for us. Stink part there in Northcote, but worth the drive.

Overpriced for what it is. Burgers were just lacking flavour and 'love' (you know what I mean, they just looked like they were slapped together with little care). And $5 for 7-8 small very average onion rings = totally not worth the price we paid. Disappointed guys. In their defense, it was Friday night and looked like they were busy but I'd prefer to wait longer for a well made burger then a rushed one.

Insane burgers!!! Always look out for their specials on Facebook and anything with onion rings or deep friend cheese is the go. Good side options too (curly fries), and staff are always really nice. Want to give 5 stars but the food is never as hot as I like, we usually drive home before eating which is close by (2 - 3 mins) but maybe I need to get in right away.

The coolest thing about The Flaming Onion is how low-key the place is and THEIR MENU! SO MANY GOODIES (BEN & JERRY’S, SIDES ETC) + THE THEMED SPECIAL BURGERS. The menu is massive. I ordered “the Smokey one” with extra blue cheese and my friend ordered a chicken burger. We shared kumara fries. The burgers were about a ten minute wait. We were certainly hungry so we DEMOLISHED those burgers and fries. Kumara fries were below average - the burgers were great though. Not the best burger I’ve had but I would definitely come back and these burgers may or may not pop in my dreams from odd occasion....

Great selection of different flavours. Order was fulfilled pretty quickly so didn't wait long. I had the smokey one burger, but found it hard pressed to find any onion in it ( a couple of pieces found). Partner enjoyed the blue dream, loved the taste. The kumera fries were to die for. Thin and crispy, cooked perfectly on the outside and soft on the inside. I would go back to try another burger at some time, must admit the patty was great, medium cooked to perfection and tasty.

Good customer service. My friend and I both ordered a combo which consisted of a burger, drink and side. I didn’t really enjoy my vege burger. The bun is dry and the vege pattie is average. For similar price, I think vegetarian burger at burger fuel and velvet burger are much better. The portion of chips and onion ring were small for the extra price we paid. Had smoky wagyu burger. The bun and composition was good, would prefer lettuce over mesculen salad. The patty itself is bland, a little dry, did not get the usual juicy fattiness from wagyu. More salt and pepper with onion/herbs would lift the flavour of the patty and taste of the burger. Above average overall.

It is hard to get a solid 5 on my zomato account. As soon as we walked in they greeted us and showed the specials that were on. The girl up front is so amazing at her job, very approachable. As soon as we ordered my son was playing street fighter on the arcade consoles (hes only 2 so he was just pushing the buttons) one of the cooks came up and gave him a lollipop (restaurants that are very lovely to my son gets extra brownie points from me). I got the wagyu beef burger and it was sooooo good, I ate it in 5 minutes. It was super fresh and the curly fries were AMAZING so crunchy and full of flavour ! When our meal (we got a chip and drink combo with the burger ) came out they gave us a complementary bottle of fizzy and we got extra cans as well. We also brought ben and jerrys ice cream. The only thing I recommend this place does is to put up their updated menu on zomato because they now have ALOT more choices to chose form. Loved loved loved this place. Will be back soon

Friendly Staff, Great LOCATION! (City View) I ordered the Handyman ($16.50/Left Pic) while my wife ordered the Diablo ($14.00/Right Pic) They had a Lettuce instead of Bun option which we opted for. (no charge). Obviously, the first opinion of the Diablo was its lack of substance. (we are used to the Burger Fuel Lettuce option, Lots of lettuce to replace the lack of bulk from a bun). The sauce of the diablo was great, i liked it, but after my wife finished there was much to be desired for how fulling it was and how much we paid for it. Next was the Handyman. From looking at the pictures posted I was expecting a bigger burger to fill the hunger. The first bite was AMAZING! the bacon, the pineapple and sauces were great! Sadly :( as I worked passed the outside of the burger the patties started losing taste and started to become quite dry. I think if the patties had some to separate them, to keep them sauced then that could be fixed. Really do hope you guys keep improving on your recipes and finding a good balance in customer satisfaction and price. Might try it again in a while with hopes :)

I've been here three times, the burgers are very good, and the staff are friendly. The only letdown is the thinness of the meat patties, for $16+, I'd expect it to be slightly thicker.

This used to be a weekly favourite for us, but the quality dipped after the ownership changed hands. Being understanding we gave the place a chance to get things under control. However, our last three orders (both phoned in and through menu log) had items missing. Cans of drink, pots of aioli. Nothing huge but stuff we have paid for. This is hugely disappointing and means that we have given up on this store for good. This is a shame as the burgers have improved (still not quite where they used to be) but not enough to put up with our orders consistently not being filled. If you do chance ordering from here, for goodness sakes check the order before leaving the store/before the delivery person leaves. This lack of service is unacceptable.

One of the best burgers in Auckland I had the Diablo and one from the specials! Is so fresh and nicely cooked. Also you can Find different burgers weekly. I was really surprised to find an arcade of street fighter, so you can play while you wait.

Don't really understand the focaccia bread concept for a Burger. Aside from that, do yourself a favour and don't order the fish burger. It consisted of burnt focaccia with fish that my dog or cat wouldn't eat. I immediately spat it out. I'd rather eat McDonalds or a sealord frozen fillet. Disgusting. What a waste of money.

I got the spicy chicken burger and my mate got the beef & blue cheese burger. Mine was light & refreshing and his was hearty & filling. Lower ranking for lack of attention to detail. Small things go along way. However I will be back to sample more of the menu. Could have had more chicken.

Tried The Flaming Onion for the first time tonight, because it's nearby and we felt like a burger. The food was good, but it's price point puts it in direct competition with other gourmet burger joints, which it doesn't quite match up to. If they stripped a dollar from the burgers and offered something a little different from the 'other' burger shops, the rating would be a 4.0

I'm so gutted! Been told nothing but good things about this place so I decided to get it. Got the surf n turf special burger. Sooooo yuck. The crab in it tasted like it was old and was incredibly fishy tasting and the wagyu beef patty was dry and flavourless. There was also only two small pieces of lettuce in my burger with no other salads. This is possibly a one off but for $14 for a burger I'm disappointed.

Overpried. Put barely any chicken in my burger. It was just a bun and tiny bit of lettuce and onion . Teeny bit of sauce and the smallest piece of chicken possible. Horrible place

This was my favourite burger place. Loved the rostis. However, a few weeks ago ordered a couple of burgers and our old favourite the rosti. We were disappointed when the potato in the rostis seemed uncooked. Chalked that experience up to a bad day. Last week we gave it another go and were unable to order rostis or agria chips. While this was disappointing I realise from time to time you may run out of things. But things got worse, our burgers were terrible. I could not finish my fish burger! The bun was stale and this made me worry about the tiny little piece of beer battered fish in my burger; how long had that been sitting around? Luckily my dog is not as fussy as me. Then there was the flaming onion burger, of which I have posted a photo. I understand there are new owners who may be learning the ropes, but I don’t believe they can be using the same portion sizes and they certainly don’t appear to be maintaining the same high standards employed by the previous owners.

Sadly this place has changed hands and failed to maintain the same standards. What used to be a hidden gem is now a run of the mill regular chippy. I miss the brown paper bags, I miss the Agria chips, I miss the generous servings. What a shame 😏

Had matt attack,was disappointed by the size..my sons junior burger was bigger..chips were good,chicken tenders were bad..processed not real chicken.friend had flaming onion burger, was tasty..abit to expensive for what you get,service was good...no rush to go back,get bigger better munch for cheaper elsewhere.

Shout out to the awesome staff of Flaming Onion who let 5 customers place new orders, with less than 10 minutes before closing today. This was my first time here so trying the Flaming Onion seemed like a good place to start. I was expecting the Flaming Onion Burger to contain a lot of raw or fried onions but as an afterthought I'm not sure if it contained any at all. My burger did have a lot of lettuce, tomato and beetroot but these fell out while I was eating. A doofer would have helped keep each bite at a constant burger-bun-vege ratio but now I'm just nit-picking finer details. The beef and cheese burger is great; cheese seemed to be what I was missing in my burger. Big ups for the patties which are a generous thickness, flavourful and satisfying. The chips were nice and crisp; not at all soggy or overcooked. I'm a huge fan of the packaging - modest brown paper and double-lined bags for the burgers. I'll be visiting again soon. Thanks for the great dinner!

Hidden away and simple take-away store, yet surprisingly tasty and good value. Everything just melts as you take a bite, but it still tastes reasonably healthy with lots of fresh ingredients! Also, they use focaccia-type buns which are unique and divine!

I think of this as an upscale takeaway. My partner if obsessed with this place. Their burgers are yummy and perfectly sized for when you're hungry. Don't forget to try the kumara fries. Burgerfuels competition in my opinion. Staff were nice when I have been in And the game machines add a nice touch

The Flaming Onion has been on my radar for quite some time. A mate and I have been on a hunt for the best burgers in Auckland. If you too are a burger junkie, then I would recommend checking out The Flaming Onion. Similar to Big J's, its a small local takeaway - on the North Shore. They specialise in gourmet burgers, opting for free range products, hand-made sauces, and herb infused olive oil soaked buns. I found the buns remind you of focaccia bread which is something I yet to see anywhere else. A couple of good things, the burger is not greasy. The kumara chips reminded you of the sweet potato fries you get in America. The ingredients were fresh and cooked to perfection. I also think its great how they ask for the degree of cooking for the steak burger. It was a tasty burger, but I couldn't taste any mustard. A couple of recommendations, you need some sort of doofer or burger holder, as they are slightly difficult to eat. I also found that the burger bun becomes soggy quite quickly, so i felt the bun could be more toasted. We all agreed that we would return and make the trip over the shore again for another. Friendly service, and accurate timing for orders. It is a nice choice to enjoy the gourmet burger around North Shore. I went there with my friends to try their burgers for the first time last week and it was not disappointing. I ordered the Spicy Chicken Burger, which was nice for me but I could not taste its spiciness. The sauce should be added a little bit more to enhance the taste. My friend ordered a Matt Attack which is a beef burger with some onion rings in the bun. It was okay for me. We ordered onion rings with aioli sauce as the sides, which was really nice for me. The price is standard. I recommend to get the combo (burger+sides+sauce+drink) which can save you a bit. UPDATE: I went to Flaming Onion again recently and order their Surf and Turf burger of the week: premium grass fed Wagyu Beef, Battered Soft shell Crab, Cheese, Asian Slaw, Spicy Relish, Wasabi and Coriander Aioli with lettuce. That was DELISH and satisying! My recommendation is to have it while it is still fresh from the kitchen - dont wait until it is a bit cold!

Had takeaways three times from this place, and the first two visits were pretty good. Decent chips and excellent fish, and my fish burger was great. Most recent experience was bad however. I got a spicy chicken burger and it was okay (nowhere near 'best in Auckland' in my opinion), but after eating almost all of it I realised the chicken was not cooked through and was raw inside. I called up and told them, and the lady said sorry. When I asked what else she could do she offered a replacement burger. I took the chicken back to the shop in a lunchbox and the two (pretty grungy) cooks took it away out of my sight, and started doing something with it. One cook then carried on with his work. I asked him for it back, and he eventually came back with the lunchbox only. I said I wanted the chicken back too in case I got sick from it, and he seemed shocked that I'd want it. He and the other chef then spent about a minute doing something with the chicken and came back with the now mangled and wet piece and the lunchbox which was now dripping inside and out with cleaning detergent! Something very dodgy going on there - seemed well rehearsed like they'd handled that situation before - was no big deal. I didn't get sick from it. I won't be returning, which is unfortunate as the food was pretty good, just not safe.

Got recommend to the flaming onion from a friend, as I'm always rushed on Tuesdays from work to the driving range so thought id give it a go, wow I was blown away it has to be near on five years on the north shore since i have tasted a true kiwi fresh take away run by true kiwis with their own in house chief top it off they offer home made soup to boot I ordered the flaming onion fresh catch of the day and salad I will be back next week for sure got to get through that yummy menu top place top people top atmosphere thanks guys

The Green Onion has changed it's name to The Flaming Onion. The Steak and Onion Fold was great as were the rosti. Thought it was good value, friendly service. I'll be back for fish and chipsU.

These guys are awesome! Every Tuesday, they announce their burger of the week on their Facebook page, (around 5 p.m.) and more often than not, I go to their shop to try it after work since it’s only 3 kms away. ( Will power is weak after a long day at work, good food replenishes it). Then I try to have a hell of a work out on Wednesday hoping to metabolize it. Their Onion Rings alone deserves a visit. Agria chips are pretty great too!

Not many takeaways are worth crossing town for, but the Flaming Onion is definitely worth crossing the Harbour Bridge for their gourmet burgers, hand-cut agria fries and real onion rings dipped in beer batter. The burgers were cooked to medium rare perfection. The home-made potato rosti also comes recommended. Avoid peak Friday night crowds and visit on a Saturday or Sunday late afternoon.
